REVISED PLANS have been put forward for a new development of 47 homes on the western edge of Wells.

Wells LVA LLP and Little Burcott Ltd. applied in August 2023 for outline permission to build 47 new homes on the B3139 Elm Close, near the junction with Gipsy Lane.

Somerset Council’s Planning Committee – East (which handles major applications within the former Mendip area) narrowly voted to refuse the plans in earlyDecember 2024, but reversed its decision in early-January 2025 following changes to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).

The Acorn Property Group has now submitted detailed proposals for the same number of homes – with the council expected to make a ruling by the end of the year.

Heavy rain sparks flash floods across Wells AT AROUND 5.30pm on Monday, 22nd June, after a hot day with plenty of sunshine, the weather changed dramatically and heavy rain, thunder, lightning and flash flooding hit Somerset – including Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton Mallet.

Dramatic videos on social media showed shops and streets rocked by heavy winds and torrential rain – over 40mm in some areas, with over 18,000 lightning strikes across the county.

Both Tesco and the Spar shop on Tucker Street had to temporarily close due to flood damage, and a number of shops towards the bottom of the High Street also reported some flood damage.

Hundreds of homes were left without power – some until much later in the day – and a number of schools were closed on Tuesday, including St Cuthbert’s.

Traffic disruption for new roundabout WORK WILL begin on the £4m roundabout to replace the junction between the B3135 and the B3139 Bath Road on Monday, 6th July.

The junction has been the scene of 67 collisions in the last 20 years – including 15 serious incidents and one fatality, which occurred in 2019.

Somerset Council was due to begin the work on Monday, 27th April 27, but this was postponed to allow ‘some final adjustments’ to be made to the designs.

The work is expected to last until the end of 2026, and the junction will be completely closed to traffic until the roundabout is finished.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, portfolio holder for transport and waste services, stated in late-March (when the scheme was first announced): “This difficult junction has been identified as a priority for some time, but with a project of this size we have needed to plan for the impact and necessary closure and identify funding to deliver it.

“We understand there will be disruption while our contractor does the work that will involve local businesses. We have been working to ensure we minimise any impact as much as possible.

“At the end of the day, this scheme is vital to ensure the chance of death or serious injury

on this junction is reduced.”

Diversion for the 173 bus Because the 173 bus from Bath travels along the B3139 to reach Wells and the junction will be closed to traffic, a diversion will be put in place for the duration of the roadworks.

From 6th July, the 173 will both leave and enter Wells through Tor Street, heading through Croscombe and then Shepton Mallet. The bus will then take the A37 to Gurney Slade before rejoining the route.

There will also be a shuttle bus running from Wells Bus Station that will cover the areas excluded from the diversion: East Wells, the Horringtons and Haydon.

MP calls for overhaul of the recycling system WELLS MP, Tessa Munt, is calling for a total overhaul of the recycling system. The MP told The Mirror about a ‘ripoff’ involving the recycling of scrap aluminium, telling the newspaper that many councils are missing out on millions of pounds to spend in their communities each year.

“We spend £5 billion importing aluminium,” the MP said, “while at the same time, something like a billion pounds

worth of aluminium is being sold abroad for recycling and reprocessing. It’s bonkers.”

The recycling system involves an astonishing 14 billion cans a year, all of which could be recycled in the UK. Tessa visited Novelis recycling complex in Warrington as part of her investigation and saw how scrap aluminium cans can ultimately be turned back into cans and back on shelves in 60 days.

CAMPAIGNERS for a safer crossing at this busy junction were delighted to receive so many supportive emails after last month’s update in Wells Voice.

‘This is such an important campaign. The crossing between Ash Lane and College Road is a nightmare’, wrote one.

Another wrote: ‘35 years ago we used to cross that road every day with our children to get to Stoberry School and yes, we took our life in our hands

every time. 35 years on and still nothing, not even a simple zebra crossing’.

Campaigners are asking pedestrians how safe they feel crossing here, but it’s just as important to hear from drivers – either driving in or out of Wells on the A39, or crossing between Ash Lane and College Road.

Wells Leisure Centre saved in rescue deal

Local Democracy Reporter FIVE LEISURE facilities in Somerset, including the Wells Leisure Centre, have been saved from permanent closure following a £215,000 rescue deal from Somerset Council.

Fusion Lifestyle, which operated facilities across Frome, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Street and Wells, went into administration on April 1 after experiencing ‘significant financial difficulties’ following the coronavirus pandemic.

The council provided £370,000 of interim funding to keep the five sites open for a further three months, while it raced to procure a new provider to run each of the facilities from early-July.

Officers confirmed in lateApril that two companies who

already operate numerous sites in Somerset were in the running for a two-year contract – which may not include ‘anything new and exciting in terms of investment’.

The council confirmed on Tuesday, 2nd June that Freedom Leisure would be taking on the five sites in the short term, ahead of a more comprehensive procurement exercise in 2028.

Freedom Leisure, which is based in East Hoathly in East Sussex, currently runs facilities in the former Sedgemoor and South Somerset areas, including the 1610 gyms in Bridgwater and Chard, the Chard Leisure Centre, Wincanton Sports Centre and Goldenstones Leisure Centre in Yeovil.

The two-year contract, which is worth £214,594, will officially begin on July 1 – with existing users being contacted in the coming weeks about any changes

News that the Leisure Centre would remain open was welcomed in Wells they need to make to their memberships.

Council Deputy Leader Liz Leyshon said she was “delighted and relieved” by the announcement.

She said: “The new operator already runs leisure services in Somerset, and the two-year contract will ensure that we

can keep the facilities open and protect the staff who have continued to work there through a very unsettling time.

“The experienced leisure operator will now undertake a comprehensive audit of all the facilities, and we will move towards awarding a new longterm contract from 2028.”

n NEWS People encouraged to join Local Wellbeing Programme PEOPLE ACROSS West Mendip are being invited to take part in Habits for Health, a free six‑week programme designed to help local residents make small changes that support everyday wellbeing.

Each week the session focuses on a different aspect of health and wellbeing, from sleep and movement to emotional wellbeing, healthier eating and connecting with others. The sessions aim to help people explore ways to feel better, move more and build confidence in making positive lifestyle changes at their own pace.

The programme is open to anyone registered with a practice in the West Mendip Primary Care Network (PCN) – a collaboration of local GP practices working together to provide additional health and wellbeing services for our community. The network is made up of Glastonbury Health Centre, Glastonbury Surgery, Wells City Practice, Wells Health Centre and Vine Surgery Partnership.

Designed in partnership with Health Connections Mendip, the programme is delivered locally by West Mendip PCN staff and rotates across community venues in Wells, Street and Glastonbury, reflecting the ongoing collaboration between neighbourhood teams and community spaces to improve access to support in familiar, welcoming settings.

The upcoming programme will run at The Portway Annexe in Wells from 15th July to 19th August, with further programmes in Glastonbury and Street starting in September.

Mayoral role civic duties and traditions My first month as mayor has flown by, with council committee meetings and several pleasurable engagements. The Council Committees meet on Thursday evenings and members of the public are always welcome. Details of what and when can be found on the Council’s website (www. wells.gov.uk), along with agendas, minutes and papers.

Highlights have been sounding the klaxon to start the races at the Festival of Running, presenting awards at The Mendip Vintage and Classic Cars event, watching the Pauline Quirke Academy students perform High School Musical at the Little Theatre and attending the Summer Fete at Fletcher House.

As mayor, I get to thank many organisations for their volunteering and contributions to Wells, and this month this included so many of those organisations at the WCN Volunteers Tea Party. I also hosted the Ambassadors in the Mayor’s Parlour to thank them for their very important role of meeting and greeting visitors to Wells.

But becoming mayor has also given me the privilege to represent Wells at other Mayor Makings and Investitures in Somerset and Bath.

I wasn’t aware of some protocols and historic traditions of the name and so here it is briefly explained.

The mayors of cities and the original Cinque Ports (Sandwich,

Hythe, Dover, Romney and Hastings), are styled The Right Worshipful Mayor – Bristol styles its lord mayor ‘Right Honourable’ instead. The mayors of towns are styled The Worshipful.

In order of importance in the procession when I attended the Mayor Making at Bath, the dignitaries processed from the Abbey to the Guildhall, in order of the sword bearer, The Sergeant at Mace, the Right Worshipful Mayor of Bath, Deputy Lord Lieutenant, High Sheriff, the Rt Hon MP, The Deputy Mayor of Bristol, and then myself as the Right Worshipful Mayor of Wells, followed by the other mayors. As I have discovered, Wells is pretty important!

We do have customs and traditions which may seem a little strange in today’s world, but I believe they are important and give each place their identity and also a sense of pride in maintaining the history. Wells Town Hall has displays in cases and on the walls that explain some of that history, and our lovely Wells & Mendip Museum hosts the City’s Archives and displays of the three Royal Charters, including the King John charter of 1201 which recognised the town as a free borough and granted the holding of markets and an annual fair.

Community support boosts fundraiser THE WELLS Skatepark Project has now raised and secured pledges of more than £242,000 towards the construction of a new skatepark for Wells and the surrounding communities.

The latest fundraising success has been driven by continued support from local businesses, groups and individual residents, demonstrating the strong backing the project continues to receive.

Recent supporters include Erla Garden Joinery, who joined the project’s popular Mark on the Park sponsorship campaign. Speaking about their support, the company said: “As a small, local family-run business, we are very thankful for the opportunity to support the project. It’s amazing to see locals coming together to support the creation of such an essential space for our community.”

Wookey Farm has also recently supported the project.

Sarah from the farm said: “Wookey Farm are really happy

to support this outdoor space that will give people, especially young people, a positive place to spend time being active.”

The fundraising effort is also being supported by young people themselves. One such local initiative Beads for Boards, run by two young skaters, is raising money through the sale of handmade bracelets, available online @beadsforboards and at Lost Projects in Glastonbury.

Meanwhile, the project’s Crowdfunder campaign has now raised £13,685 from 118 supporters. One recent crowdfunder supporter, Brett, commented: “Great for the area, and it gives youngsters and young adults a chance to express themselves.”

A spokesperson for the Wells Skatepark Project said: “Passing £242,000 is fantastic. While there is still work to do, the community response has been incredible and we are hugely grateful to everyone

New minibus service launched in Mendip RESIDENTS ACROSS Wells and the surrounding villages are set to benefit from improved access to community transport, thanks to a new partnership between Bluebird Care and Mendip Community Transport.

The collaboration has funded a dedicated minibus serving the Wells area, helping local people who rely on community transport to remain independent, connected and active within their communities.

Masen, director at Bluebird Care, said: “At Bluebird Care, we believe that genuine care for our community goes beyond the front door. Partnering with Mendip Community Transport to keep this minibus on the road felt like a natural extension of everything we stand for.

The sponsored vehicle operates on Route 67, which runs between Wells and Wedmore, serving villages along the route and connecting passengers with onward transport to Burnham-

on-Sea. The service operates Monday to Friday, with an additional Saturday service between Wells and Wedmore.

The route plays a vital role in helping residents access essential services, shops, appointments and social activities, contributing to around 1,800 passenger journeys each month.

Mendip Community Transport has been providing accessible transport services across the district for 24 years, and has become a lifeline for many residents who are unable to use conventional public transport.

Managing Director Kevan Riley welcomed the new partnership. “We are delighted to welcome Bluebird Care as a partner,” he said.

“Their support means we can continue to provide this essential service to people in Wells who depend on us. This kind of community partnership is exactly what makes a difference to people’s lives day to day.”

However, the management have decided on a policy to be accessible to all and listened to feedback from people with accessibility issues. The result is that they have, arguably, created one of the most accessible heritage attractions anywhere. They really do care.”

Dick Hodgson, who uses a wheelchair and regularly visits the Bishop’s Palace, explained how all the buildings and parts of the gardens (with exception only of the high ramparts) are accessible to him. There will be a temporary closure of Burcott Lane from 13th July through to 17th July. The closure will extend from the junction with Gipsy Lane eastwards for a total distance of 521 metres.

A DETECTORIST from Wells, Pete Faxholm, found an early17th century gold signet ring in a field in Emborough in October 2020. And, on Tuesday, 23rd of June, it went to auction at Noonans where sadly it didn’t sell.

Pete, who is head of Process for Brothers Drinks, also owns a pop-up pizza business called PTZA Handmade Pizza by Pete, and he was planning on using his share of the sale to invest in this business.

After having it valued, Pete believes the ring to be worth about £15,000, although any money raised from the sale would have to be split with the landowner.

Revised plans for new development From page 1

designs, the existing junction with Gipsy Lane will be completely remodelled to create a new T-junction, with a new cycle lane which will run along the southern side of Elm Close (including the neighbouring development site of 100 homes, being delivered by David Wilson Homes).

Gipsy Lane will remain accessible via a new junction within the housing estate, and the existing public right of way through the site will be upgraded, providing a safe pedestrian route to Burcott Lane.

The homes will fan out from the new access route, with the southern edge being set aside for public open space, a children’s play area, an attenuation pond and a green buffer to provide a soft edge between Wells and the neighbouring village of Wookey.

The new homes will range from one-bedroom flats to four-bedroom houses, with a total of 122 parking spaces being provided throughout the site. Out of the 47 homes planned for the site, 19 will be affordable – the equivalent of 40 per cent of all properties.

As part of the outline legal agreement (which was signed off in November 2025), the development will provide more than £11,000 of additional funding towards active travel, which will be directed towards enhancing and extending the Strawberry Line route which runs through the city.

The western edge of Wells has witnessed significant housing growth over the last decade, with the delivery of the Priory Fields estate (comprising 119 homes south of Wookey Hole Road) and the Rose Banks development (consisting of 220 houses on the A371 Portway).

In addition to the David Wilson Homes site on Elm Close (christened ‘The Elms’), Gleeson Strategic Land Ltd. secured outline permission on appeal in August 2024 for 50 homes south of the Wells Touring Park.

The Planning Inspectorate

also granted Gladman Developments outline permission on appeal in September 2025 to deliver a further 78 homes on Wookey Hole Road – with the site being put up for sale in February.

Two further developments near the Acorn site are currently under consideration – one for 116 homes on Elm Close (put forward by Gleeson Strategic Land Ltd.) and one to relocate Wells Rugby Club to new facilities on Portway (with Stonewater intending to deliver 106 homes on the existing Charter Way rugby pitches once this relocation has occurred).

Somerset Council is expected to make a ruling on the Acorn proposals before Christmas.

Orchard Vale Trust celebrates 40 years TUCKED AWAY on Doctor’s Hill in Wookey, Orchard Vale Trust has spent more than 40 years helping adults with learning disabilities live fuller, more independent lives – the trust celebrated its 40th anniversary on the 15th of May. What began as a family-led response to a lack of suitable care has grown into a respected Somerset charity spread across four locations, with homes in Wells, Midsomer Norton, Cheddar and Shepton Mallet.

The charity was founded in 1985 by a group of parents who wanted greater opportunities and better support for young people. At a time when options for adults with learning disabilities were often limited, the founders shared a vision of creating homes and services that would offer choice, dignity and the chance to live as independently as possible.

As SEO Liz Page said, as

she gave us the tour of their Wookey headquarters, East Court: “The aim of Orchard Vale is simply to support everyone to live life to the full. It’s all about building confidence and giving people employability skills.”

13 residents live in East Court, with a further four living in houses on the grounds that are designed for people who are less mobile. East Court gives its residents homes for life, and 10 of the 17 residents have lived there for the whole 40 years.

The rural setting of East Court provides a peaceful backdrop, but Orchard Vale Trust’s work extends far beyond its Wookey base. The beautiful six-acre gardens are run by garden manager Mike Williamson, ably supported by a number of young people that are keen to learn in a nurturing and supportive environment.

If you would like to volunteer in these gardens then contact the trust A mixture of flowers, fruit and vegetables are grown in East Court’s gardens. Flowers are cut and sent to Brownes Garden Centre, where they’re sold for donations. Fruit and veg is either used in the four houses or donated to local food banks.

Around seven years ago, the trust set up Stile Gardening, which was designed to offer a professional gardening service in the local area while also helping adults with learning disabilities into paid employment.

Stile Gardening is a social enterprise, and the work is carried out to the highest standard – with employees being paid a fair wage for their work.

Orchard Vale Trust is also appealing for volunteers to help care for its gardens and green spaces. Whether people can spare a few hours occasionally or are looking for a regular volunteering opportunity, the Trust says extra support is always welcome.

Volunteers can assist with everything from planting and pruning to keeping pathways and communal areas looking their best. In return, they become part of a communityfocused organisation dedicated to helping adults with learning disabilities live fulfilling and independent lives.

Wells group reveals Man of the Year winner There was rapturous applause in the Wells 9.30am Slimming World group in May, as Oli Hopkins was crowned this year’s Man of the Year.

Oli first joined the group following the loss of his beloved pet spaniel, Gunner. At a difficult time in his life, he decided something needed to change and it was then that he took that brave first step through the doors.

Since then, his journey has been nothing short of inspiring.

Although previously nominated for group competitions, Oli never felt worthy. But this year however, things felt different. Now Oli’s an incredible 4.5 stone lighter, is walking quicker, standing taller and enjoying food again.

Oli’s consultant, Sarah, asked if she could put him through as a nomination and his response was simple: “Yeah, go on then.

Why not.”

Reflecting on his success, Oli said: “I couldn’t have done

it without our group and the support of my partner, Sheila.

Everyone is so supportive and friendly, and I do not feel judged.

If you need help, everyone is there for you with ideas, recipes and snack suggestions, no matter how you’re feeling. They can even help turn a hard week right around.”

Wells morning Consultant Sarah said: “Our Man of the Year award couldn’t have gone to a more deserving man. Oli is such a pleasure to have in the group and we’re all so proud of him.

“I love our Man of the Year competition as we can highlight our fantastic gents in the group.

It’s not just for ladies. It can actually take a man four times as long to ask for help, support or even join a group.”

The shop, which sells home accessories, paint and furniture, also runs workshops, and has recently become the only shop in the area to stock the popular Frenchic paint brand.

THE SEEMINGLY endless destruction in Ukraine has made Martyn Starnes more determined to take their people an ambulance stuffed with medical supplies.

“Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine causing senseless destruction and misery on innocent people,” said Martyn.

“The outnumbered but innovative Ukrainian military has provided incredible resistance with the development of its drone and missile technology,” said Martyn, from Croscombe, “and it now has the capacity to manufacture much of its own ordnance.

“However, Ukrainians still need help from us in the West on many levels, and this includes

humanitarian aid.

“There is a constant requirement for emergency vehicles and medical equipment for military and civilian purposes.

I will be driving an ambulance to Ukraine in July containing medical supplies on behalf of Medical Life Lines Ukraine.

“To undertake this trip along with other colleagues, I need to raise £7,000 towards the cost of acquiring the vehicle and associated supplies. I have so far received nearly £3,000.

Legion looking for volunteers THE WELLS BRANCH of the Royal British Legion is calling on local residents to join its ranks as members and volunteers, helping to secure the future of a branch that has supported the Armed Forces community for more than a century.

The branch, which has been active since the Royal British Legion was founded in the 1920s, is looking to recruit people to serve on its committee as well as volunteers to assist with events, activities and community support initiatives throughout the year.

Branch chairman, Alistair McBride, said the organisation was keen to attract people from all walks of life, including those without a military background.

“We are incredibly proud of our deep roots here in Wells, spanning over a century of

dedication to the Armed Forces community,” he said.

“Whether you want to take on a leadership role on our committee, help us run local welfare events, or simply give a few hours of your time in the autumn, your contribution matters and makes a meaningful difference. You don’t need a service background to stand with us, just a desire to help.”

Mr McBride said there remained a common misconception that Royal British Legion membership was limited to former members of the Armed Forces. However, many of the current Wells branch committee members are civilians who have family connections to military service or who simply wish to support the charity’s work.

By Philip Welch WCN’S VOLUNTEERS Week Tea Party proved a tremendous success, with more than 130 volunteers coming together in the ballroom of Wells Town Hall.

The event celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, having first been held at the Town Hall in 2016. Over the past decade, it has been co-hosted by The Bishop’s Palace, Wells Cathedral and Wells Museum.

They were welcomed by WCN trustee Philip Welch who said: “Wells depends on volunteers – every month, every week, every day. Your support is critical.

Without volunteers, many valued services for our community and our often vulnerable residents would cease.

“So WCN has organised today’s Tea Party to give and share our profound thanks for all you do for the community of Wells.”

The generous donors who made the event possible include:

THE WELLS & Mendip Museum will be open on Sundays throughout the school summer holidays.

As Sue Isherwood, chairman of the Trustees, explains: “We’re trialling Sunday opening because we want to make it even easier for families to explore the museum, whether they are discovering our collections for the first time or coming back to delve deeper into the story of Wells and the people who shaped it.”

As well as telling the story of the City, the museum boasts a Jurassic Sea Dragon, the

real Witch of Wookey, a First World War trench, a beautiful hidden garden, the remains of prehistoric beasts and Romans in Somerset.

Sue added: “If the trial proves popular, the museum will extend Sunday opening through the summer months in 2027. So, if you’d like Sundays in Wells to include a little more wonder, history and adventure, come along and show your support.”

Sunday opening during the school summer holidays will run from 26th July – 30th August (inclusive). Opening times will be 10am – 4pm.

Charity screening at Film Centre ON WEDNESDAY, 3rd June, the Wells Film Centre gave a very special screening of Masters of the Universe to raise money for MediCinema, a charity that builds and runs state-of-the-art cinemas in hospitals around the UK. A packed house enjoyed the

latest summer blockbuster on the very day of its worldwide release.

Staff from both Wells Cathedral and Wookey Hole were in attendance, as the film featured scenes shot in both locations.

In total, the evening raised over £500 for the charity.

Wookey Hole Caves: A source of inspiration Neil Morgan, a cave guide supervisor at Wookey Hole, brings us a fascinating regular slice of history from the caves…

Few natural landmarks in Britain have had such a deep and varied impact on individuals as Wookey Hole Caves.

Spanning almost two thousand years, the caves have been a source of inspiration for artists, poets, musicians and photographers, giving rise to ancient texts through to contemporary art.

The earliest known literary reference dates to around 189 AD, when Clement of Alexandria, the Greek Christian theologian, described a cave in Britain where wind produced ‘a sound as of the clashing of numerous cymbals’.

It’s a sound I have heard twice myself, generated far beneath the ground and radiating from the Witch’s Parlour. The noise is so unusual, beginning quiet and getting louder with time; a noise that would have caused fear and intrigue in visitors hundreds of years ago.

The stalagmite formation now known as the Witch is first mentioned

by William of Worcester in 1470. He described ‘the figure of a woman,

spinning wool, and holding in her girdle a spinning distaff’. The distaff was actually a tall, thin stalagmite once at the base of the Witch’s head, which is now missing.

The first definitive reference to a witch appears in 1628, in a collection of manuscripts compiled by Bulstrode Whitlock. Here he identified the famous stone feature as ‘The Witch of Ochies Hole’.

In 1756, Royal Physician Dr. Henry Harrington, physician to the Duke of York, immortalised the caves in verse with his poem The Witch of Wooky Hole.

In 1914, Herbert Balch, the local amateur archaeologist, published his book Wookey Hole: Its Caves and Cave Dwellers. For the book’s drawings and photos, he worked alongside poster artist John Hassall and underground photographer Harry Savory. They collaborated on further works for more than 30 years. Their surviving diaries reveal wonderful detail of the time.

On 1 March 1913, Hassall recorded: “Off at 9 oc to Wookey Hole with Mr. Balch. Spent entire day. Drawing. The Cave, The Hyena Den, Badger Hole and Entrance etc and general views.

Afterwards taking photos, (Savory).

Extremely interesting. Farm Mrs Adlam.”

Just two days later, Savory and Balch returned to photograph the Witch image for the book’s cover: “To Wookey Hole in morning with Harry & Balch. They took lots of photos. in the Cave. Till 2 oc. very hot indeed. Rained. Back to Wells packed and off home by the 4.55. arriving Paddington 8.30. Put all things straight again.”

Between 1928 and 1931, Hassall returned to Wookey Hole, commissioned

by cave owner Gerard Hodgkinson, to produce a further series of paintings that were later exhibited at a Somerset Exhibition in Bath in 1932.

The series of six views of Wookey Hole Caves were later printed as advertising posters and postcards. These documented paintings are still on display today in the mill and can be enjoyed during the cheese and cider tasting on the Wookey Uncovered Heritage Tour.

In 1930, the Wookey Hole Male Voice Choir broadcasted a live concert from inside the caves on the BBC, which was the first music ever broadcast from underground within a cave.

In 2024, a Wells Museum exhibition, Out of Time: Underground Mendip, featured artist Emma Stibbon’s panoramic drawing of Chamber 3, the Witch’s Parlour, alongside works by Herbert Balch.

Visitors have descended into the depths of Wookey Hole for thousands of years. It’s not just a cave, it’s a source of inspiration.

The White Hart and all that Jazz JAZZ AT THE White Hart has held a weekly gig for some years now and is one of the longest-running Jazz evenings in Somerset. It was started by the Wells Jazz Collective as a way to bring great quality Jazz to the people of Wells and the wider Somerset area. The monthly jam sessions held every third Monday of the month are also a great way for local musicians of all ages and abilities to play together.

Over the years the White Hart Jazz nights have hosted many well-known Jazz musicians including Iain Ballamy, Craig Milverton, Andy Hague, Jerry Crozier-Cole, John Law, Ashley John Long and many more.

Last month we were thrilled to host an evening of vibraphone and guitar with Michael Hughes and James Chadwick, and this month’s highlights include some top-class guitar playing from Chris Cobbson and Roi Geyari, who will be joining us all the way

By Philip Welch THE DEATH of a baby is profoundly traumatic and rarely spoken about, but two Wells women decided to put this right in August last year by founding Forever Loved, a safe and supportive space to connect with others who understand life after baby loss.

Whether you experienced a miscarriage, a termination for medical reasons, stillbirth or neonatal birth death, you are welcome at this friendly group on the edge of Wells.

“These are things that people don’t talk about, but they can here,” said co-founder Zoe Costelloe who lost Rory stillborn.

“We do this in honour of our lost babies which makes us stronger. Honouring Rory gives me a superpower.”

You are welcome whether your loss was recent or many years ago.

One woman lost a daughter 29 years ago and had no support but she does now at Forever Loved.

“We started with just two of us and it has grown,” said Emily Sheppard who lost Ruby at 25 weeks. “We started with just two of us and it has grown.

“We both went to the Blue School together and left in 2010.

After Zoe lost Rory in 2021 she contacted me as she knew I also had experienced stillbirth when I lost Ruby in 2019.”

The group is very informal. No structure, except a cup of tea and a biscuit.

They meet on the last Thursday of the month from 5.30pm-7.30pm at Heads Up in South Horrington.

“We are fortunate to have the support of our families, and Heads Up have been wonderful,” said Zoe. “We are not trained counsellors, just two people who need the support of a group which helps create a very relaxed environment.”

OVERAGE, sometimes referred to as uplift or clawback, is a legal mechanism that requires a buyer of land to pay an additional amount to the seller if a specified event, or ‘trigger’, occurs within a specified period after completion of the sale/purchase.

It is used to ensure that the seller shares in any increase in the value of the land involved in the transaction if they were not aware of its true value or development potential, or if there is a change in planning policy.

Overage is most commonly encountered in sales of agricultural or ‘bare’ land, particularly where that land adjoins existing development or the buyer is a developer.

However, it can be imposed in connection with any land sale – for example, the sale of a house with the potential for extension or modernisation, or the sale of part of a garden.

Some common triggers include a sale of the land subject to the overage, the grant or implementation of planning permission (whether for any or a specified type of development) relating to that land, or a sale of that land following the grant of planning permission.

Overage periods are typically between five and 20 years but can be longer.

The additional amount payable can be fixed or can be

calculated in accordance with a formula – for example, an agreed amount per additional unit or additional internal area constructed on the land subject to the overage, or a proportion of the increase in the value of that land as a result of the occurrence of the trigger.

If the parties cannot agree the amount payable within a specified timescale, it is usual for either of them to be able to request that an independent surveyor be instructed to determine it.

The appropriate trigger, overage period, calculation method and timescale for making the payment will need to be negotiated between the parties at the same time as the other terms of the sale/purchase. The agreed terms will depend on the nature and development potential of the land in question, and the relative bargaining strength of the parties.

Given the complexity and potentially significant financial implications of overage, it is always advisable for both the seller and the buyer to instruct a suitably experienced surveyor or land agent to negotiate the terms on their behalf. Once the terms have been agreed, the parties’ solicitors will draft and negotiate the documentation required to impose them.

Another sell-out event for Wells SOUP

By Philip Welch SOUP RETURNED with a sellout success in Wells Cathedral, raising money for four more very good causes.

This grant-giving lunch used to have £700 to share. Now it has increased to £850 with the lion’s share of the audience’s votes going to Wells Focus Counselling who went away with £500.

Lucia Chadwick from this charity, which is based in South Street, told how they support people suffering from isolation, grief, depression and other challenges.

One they had helped was an autistic 14-year-old boy who was not going to school and had run away from home. But they developed his interest in photography which changed his life. He is now happy and back at school.

The first of the four good causes to present was the Friends of Wells Cathedral Grand Organ Appeal, whose David Morgan-Hewitt told the audience they still needed a third of the £3 million required to restore the organ, which was at risk of imminent catastrophic failure.

Claire Sully spoke on behalf of Edric Hobbs, who was unfortunately unable to attend due to being away for the weekend at a wedding.

A concert 50 years in the making

Group offers networking support A NEW MONTHLY networking group for businesswomen has launched in Wells, offering local entrepreneurs and professionals an opportunity to connect and support one another.

The Wells In-Person Meet Up, organised by Business Women In, takes place on the third Thursday of each month at Fosso Lounge.

It runs from 10am-12pm and booking is essential.

Hosted by Victoria Marshall, the group brings together women from a range of industries and business backgrounds in a relaxed setting designed to encourage conversation and collaboration.

Unlike traditional networking events, the meet-ups focus on

building relationships rather than formal business pitches, with attendees encouraged to share ideas, discuss challenges and exchange advice.

The initiative aims to help women increase their visibility within the local business community, gain referrals and develop connections with others who understand the challenges of running a business.

Meetings are held monthly on a pay-as-you-go basis, costing £10 per session, with membership options available for regular attendees.

ON 7TH FEBRUARY this year, Carolyn Craig, the assistant director of Music at Wells Cathedral, met with my wife La, Cathy Hay and myself to discuss a project that had been on my mind for several years, which was to put on a performance of the Monteverdi Vespers of 1610.

I first heard it aged about 17, and despite being close to obsessed with it ever since and now being over 70, I had never sung it. 14 months later, and with the involvement of many people, the concert took place in Wells Cathedral on 7th May. To say it was a success would be an understatement. The cathedral was almost full and a long and rapturous standing ovation was given at the end.

The Monteverdi String Band, led by Wells alumnus Olly Webber, and the English Sackbutt and Cornet Ensemble, with Toby Carr on theorbo, Simon Lloyd on continuo and Annabel Knight and Liz Walker on recorder, were absolutely wonderful.

Then there was the involvement of the stunning young musicians of the Wells Cathedral School, both as extra members of the ensembles and as performers of the instrumental interludes. Many commented on

the amazing playing of Ted Lunt and Morgan Bland.

We were truly blessed with the vocal soloists. Two more Wells alumni, Kieran White and Madeleine Perring, together with two of the Cathedral’s own vicars choral, Richard Rowntree and Will Drakett, were joined by Beth Yates, and left many of us spellbound by their glorious skill and musicianship.

It was fitting, though deeply sad, that the concert was dedicated to our dear friend Martin Warren.

Carolyn Craig directed the whole project and conducted the concert magnificently.

Adding to the fun of Boat Race day Tortoise and

hare run again

By Philip Welch THE BAND of happy volunteers who have saved the Wells Moat Boat Race want to add to the fun.

As well as guessing which rafts will win and whether intrepid sailors will fall into the water, they want to resurrect the fete side of this popular event on the bandstand side of the Recreation Ground.

“We are approaching local charities and other organisations who may be interested in attending to promote their profile within our local community and as an opportunity to fundraise,” said volunteer Philip Payne.

“If you are able to think up some interactive game or experience or challenge that would interest families we think it would be a real crowd puller.”

THIS YEAR is the 15th annual Tortoise and Hare run, organised by the Wells Classic Motorcycle Club.

Departing from Wells Rugby Club, the run is, as the name would suggest, split into slower and faster categories.

The lowest-powered machines can undertake the Snail route at 55 miles, while other categories include the Tortoise (85 miles – smaller bikes up to 250cc) and, naturally the Hare (120 miles for machines over 250cc).

The main event takes place on Sunday, 19th July, but there’s also an optional ride on the Saturday, too.

Discussing farming at the Bath & West Thoughts of Wells and Mendip Hills MP Tessa Munt Hello everyone, Another busy month here and in Westminster!

I enjoyed meeting up with Mel Squires, previously South West Regional Director of the National Farmers’ Union, and Minette Batters, farmer and exPresident of the NFU for lunch at the Bath & West Show, discussing farming and food. Minette sits in the House of Lords as a crossbencher – meaning she has no political party allegiance – and understands the challenges facing the farming community.

I attended Wells’ Mayor Making ceremony, marking the start of Cllr Denise Denis’ term as the 652nd Mayor of Wells. May I thank Cllr Louis Agabani for his work as Wells’ Mayor last year.

Yet again, Wells hosted a wonderful Comedy Festival. I’m always amazed at the range of talented performers who visit our lovely city, and I’m already looking forward to next year’s event.

Locally, Cllr Ros Wyke and I joined forces at a meeting with Wales & West Utilities, who planned to shut the A371 between Cheddar and Wells for the six weeks of the school holidays.

We explained the business catastrophes which would certainly unfold if they closed the road at a time which is so critical to tourism and business income. Later the same day, we heard from Somerset Council that Wales & West Utilities would be moving their works to another time. Such good news for everyone in Wells, Cheddar and every business en route!

Last November, I attended a really informative briefing by ten of the UK’s leading experts, aimed at over 1,200 leaders from business, culture, faith, sport, politics and the media.

Called the National Emergency Briefing, the experts set out in a series of short talks on the implications of climate and nature breakdown for our weather, health, food supplies, the economy, defence and national security. A film has been made of the event and screenings being organised in communities across the UK, including in

I’ve already watched screenings organised by Sustainable Wells at the Town Hall, one at the Diocesan offices and another in Wookey Village Hall. Mendip Mental Health Hike completed on one of the hottest days of the year

THE MENDIP Mental Health Hike took off from Uphill on the 24th of May, on what was one of the hottest days of the year.

Despite the heat, those taking part had an amazing day – which was rounded off by a party at the Wookey Hole Inn. We thought we’d hand over to Chris Young from Wolf Barbers, one of the organisers of the event to share his thoughts and photos from the day.

The walk itself went really well.

The weather was hot but that didn’t deter anyone. Everyone had a great time with lots of smiles, laughs and chatter all the way through. We arrived at the finish line about 30 minutes past the scheduled finish time, due to the heat, and we were welcomed by all our family and friends cheering us home.

The afterparty was full of food, fun and dancing – even on some very tired legs. The band, The Sheriff, were as incredible as always in keeping everyone dancing together, and Sam Evans also played his new song, Take a Walk, which was released that day and inspired by last year’s Hike.

Notes from a wildlife garden By the end of May, temperatures in the greenhouse had reached 42 degrees while outside sat at 30. I spent much of the week opening vents, moving pots and searching for pockets of shade that seemed not to exist. The sweet peas looked exhausted. Seedlings I had nurtured since February were suddenly struggling and, despite everything I tried, some were lost.

Eventually, I stopped trying quite so hard. Not because I had given up, but because I remembered something the garden has always understood better than I do: you cannot work against nature, you can only work within it. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you simply have to wait and see.

We keep water throughout the garden – a pond, shallow dishes and stones where bees can drink safely.

In the heat, they have all been busy.

Birds arrive to drink and bathe. Bees pause at the water’s edge. Watching them, I felt a sense of rightness. The garden was doing what a garden should do, offering shelter, water and space for other lives to unfold.

I often think of myself as the garden’s owner, but that is not quite true. Inside the house I can choose the colours on the walls and decide how things should look. The garden is different.

The moment I turn my back, it gets on with its own life. Seeds appear where I never planted them. Carefully tended plants disappear. The pond develops its

own ecosystem without asking permission.

The garden is always doing something I did not plan for, and I have come to understand that this is not a failure of control but the whole point. I plant seeds. I water them. And then I close the door and the garden does its own thing.

This month I am reading Garden People: Valerie Finnis and the Golden Age of Gardening by Ursula Buchan. Through Valerie Finnis’ photographs, we meet gardeners not as experts or celebrities, but as people living alongside their gardens. It is a gentle reminder that a garden is not simply something we create, but something we share our lives with.

The Rib is NGS Garden of the Month

THE NGS (National Garden Scheme) Garden of the Month for July is The Rib in Wells.

Hidden away on St. Andrew Street, The Rib is one of the few houses in England to boast both a cathedral and a sacred well in its garden.

Although The Rib’s garden is compact, it delivers a very unique architectural and historical punch. Long-established trees, interesting shrubs and, more recently, planted mixed borders frame the view in the main garden. Then, when you add in the ancient walled garden and the traditionally planted cottage garden, it’s clear to see why this has been made a standout choice for the NGS’s Garden of the Month.

On specific days, the NGS’s chosen garden will fundraise for

charity. For The Rib, that will be on Saturday, 25th July.

n NEWS ‘Spider Woman’ to return to Wells Festival of Literature ONE OF BRITAIN’S most influential legal figures is set to return to Wells Festival of Literature this autumn.

Lady Hale, affectionately known as ‘Spider Woman’ thanks to her iconic spider brooch and bestselling memoir of the same name, will appear at the festival in October to discuss her latest book, With the Law on Our Side.

She proved a popular guest when she last visited the festival in 2024, appearing in conversation with solicitor Harriet Wistrich, director of the Centre for Women’s Justice.

Although Lady Hale is renowned for breaking barriers as the first female President of the UK Supreme Court, she became a household name in 2019 when the Supreme Court ruled that then Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s suspension of Parliament was unlawful. The judgment attracted worldwide attention, as did the spider brooch she wore while

delivering it.

Her memoir, Spider Woman, told the story of how a selfproclaimed ‘girly swot’ rose through the ranks of a profession long dominated by men.

Now she returns to Wells with a new book, subtitled How the Law Works for Everyone and How We Can Make It Work Better. Through the stories of real people, Lady Hale offers an engaging guide to the legal system, from everyday tribunals to the highest courts in the land, revealing the challenges, dilemmas and human stories behind the law.

The book has already attracted critical acclaim, earning a place on the longlist for the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction 2026. The prize was recently awarded to Lyse Doucet, whose appearance at the Wells festival last year proved a sell-out success.

Wells is the star of author’s new books

Families in Wells can now explore the city’s landmarks in two new locally themed children’s books by Wiltshire author, Benji Barkley.

The Lost Pages of Wells and The Lost Colours of Wells (a colouring book) are the latest additions to Barkley’s growing collection of children’s books inspired by towns and cities across the South West. The two Wells titles are his 10th and 11th books, following earlier releases featuring places including Bath, Bristol, Salisbury, Frome, Bradford-onAvon, Devizes, Glastonbury and Warminster.

In The Lost Pages of Wells, young readers join siblings Ollie and Rosie and their mischievous border terrier, Patch, on a rhyming adventure around the city after pages from a book are blown across town. Along the way they visit many of Wells’ bestknown attractions, including the cathedral, The Bishop’s Palace, Vicars’ Close, Wookey Hole, St Cuthbert’s Church and the Recreation Ground play area.

Designed for children aged approximately 3-7, the 32-page storybook includes an illustrated map, a ‘Did You Spot?’ activity section, and also encourages families to visit the real locations featured in the story.

The ideal companion to The Lost Pages of Wells is The Lost Colours of Wells (a new colouring series, of which Wells is the debut book) transforms 16 recognisable local landmarks into bold blackand-white colouring scenes suitable for a wide range of ages.

The book includes a colourable map of Wells showing the 16 locations visited, and Patch the dog on every page.

Author Benji Barkley said: “Wells has so many distinctive landmarks and historic buildings that it was a natural choice for the series.

“We had a day out in Wells last summer and took photos while we were here, so it’s great to finally publish. My hope is that local children will recognise places they already know, discover somewhere new, and perhaps be inspired to explore more of Wells with their families.”

Barkley, who lives in Wiltshire with his wife, daughter and border terrier, started the series last year and plans to create books for towns covering the whole of the South West.

n NEWS St Cuthbert’s tower tours to open again this August STARTING THIS AUGUST, St Cuthbert’s is once again inviting visitors to climb the church tower to enjoy the views of Wells and the surrounding countryside.

Not only do visitors have the fun of climbing up the 166 steps of the spiral staircase and gazing over the parapet at the top, they will also meet bell-ringers, find out about bell-ringing and have a go themselves. And of course there are memories of Hot Fuzz and that nasty incident…

The tower is open on every Sunday afternoon in August with tours running on the hour from 2pm until 4pm. Numbers are limited so it is advisable to book beforehand. Regrettably, children under the age of eight are not allowed to climb up. The first tours are on Sunday, 2nd August.

Cream teas (£5) are available for anyone who would like a cream tea in a beautiful setting on a summer afternoon.

Slightly Older Kids on the Block – MADBand strutting their funky stuff

MADBand’s triumphant second concert in Wells A FUNDRAISING evening at the Wells Little Theatre has once again proved that size doesn’t matter, showing that community performances on smaller stages can rival the energy and atmosphere seen at larger professional venues.

Five local self-proclaimed ‘middle-aged dads’, drawn from the Wookey Theatre Group and the semi-professional local music scene, formed MADBand, a nostalgic tribute to the boy bands of the 1990s. The brainchild of Wookey Hub proprietor Andy Healey-Childs, MADBand also included Graham Blunt, John Carroll, Steve Collinson and Steve French. Taking on a setlist of iconic hits from ’90s boy bands, the group leaned fully – sometimes literally – to both sincerity and playfulness. What could easily have been a novelty act instead became a surprisingly polished and thoroughly enjoyable performance.

The Little Theatre audience responded immediately. From the opening numbers, people were on their feet, dancing, singing and clapping, creating an atmosphere more reminiscent of an arena concert than a seated theatre.

From the outset, the band’s playful rapport with the audience was key. There was often as much

laughter as applause, particularly when the performers broke into their carefully rehearsed boy band dance moves.

Vocal performances were consistently strong throughout the evening, and special mention should go to MADBand’s own Gary Barlow, Graham Blunt, whose strong vocals brought real quality to the performance.

The evening was perfectly complemented by Lyn Hinde and Polly Carroll’s singing duo, Me and Her, whose rendition of Mr Brightside had the packed theatre on its feet.

By the end of the night, MADBand had delivered more than just a tribute set; the mento-boys had created a shared moment of joy, proving that great live performance depends not on scale, but on connection.

The event was a huge success, not only as entertainment, but also as a reminder that local acts can combine professional-level ambition with a heart firmly rooted in the local community. In total, over £2,000 was raised for very worthy causes.

The evening was organised by Mike and Jo Scammell of Wells Little Theatre, with lighting by Phil Vivash and sound by Steve Henderson.

On display in the new Roman Gallery of the Wells & Mendip Museum is a remarkable lead ingot found in Westbury-sub-Mendip in 2016. The lead must have come from the mines at Charterhouse four miles to the north.

The mines were taken over by the Second Augusta Legion under the future Emperor Vespasian soon after the Roman invasion of 43 AD. It seems likely that it was a major reason for the invasion – the Romans had been buying lead from local miners and decided to ‘cut out the middle man’. Four enormous lead ingots in the museum bear Vespasian’s name.

This ingot has the inscription: IMP DVOR AVG ANTONINI ET VERI ARMENIACORUM It is remarkable for several reasons. One is simply that we can read it. With the exception of using ‘U’ instead of ‘V’, we still use the beautiful letter-forms that the Romans perfected. Another is that it records the names of two ‘Good

Emperors’ who ruled jointly. They were Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Aurelius, who were both adopted sons of the previous emperor, Antonius Pius. This is how we can read it: IMP – short for Imperator, meaning Emperor DUOR – short for Duorum, meaning ‘of the two’ AUG – short for Augustus, the honorific title of an Emperor ANTONINI – the adoptive family name ET – means ‘and’ VERI – a version of the name Verus adopted by Lucius Verus ARMENIACORUM – records the conquest of Armenia in 163 AD. Lucius died in 169 AD, so we can date this ingot to within five years – 164-169. A little later, the Second Augusta Legion was given the honorific surname ‘Antonina’ in recognition of its loyalty.

What this ingot was doing in Westbury we do not know. If only it could speak.

Free lunches through holidays WELLS UNITED CHURCH will again be offering free lunches during the upcoming school summer holidays.

The scheme, which was set up earlier in the year during the half-term holidays in February, enables anyone to come along to Seager Hall and enjoy a healthy, freshly prepared and tasty meal. There are also children’s activities, and specialist family advice and support if needed.

The scheme is run by volunteers of the Wells United Church.

The dates for the summer free lunches are: 24th and 31st of July, and 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th of August. Lunch starts at 12pm and finishes at 2pm.

Revd Stephen Hawkins, minister of Wells United Church, said of the scheme: “With no other agenda than to simply be a blessing in our city, the message is ‘there really is such thing as a free lunch!’”

Palace gets ready to party THE BISHOP’S PALACE will once again host the three-day Party in the Palace music event this July, running from Friday, 3rd July to Sunday, 5th July.

Held in the grounds of The Bishop’s Palace, the event combines headline acts, popular tribute bands and a kids’ pop party, creating a programme designed to appeal to all ages and tastes. There will also be a range of food and drink options to purchase on the night.

Dance Fusion bring us ‘The Greatest Show’ DANCE FUSION WELLS is hosting two performances of its annual showcase at the Wookey Hole Theatre on Friday, 10th July and Sunday, 12th July.

The first half of the show will feature their junior dancers in a celebration inspired by The Greatest Showman. We’ve been told to expect ‘highenergy routines incorporating breakdance, cheerleading, contemporary and commercial dance’.

The second part of the show is

titled Phoenix and is performed by the group’s senior dancers.

Covering more mature themes, Phoenix explores the subjects of mental health, self-acceptance, personal struggles and resilience.

Priddy gears up for annual Folk festival PRIDDY FOLK Festival returns from the 10th – 12th July, bringing three days of music, dance and family-friendly entertainment to the village.

The line-up of artists includes Dervish, The Melrose Quartet, Dallahan, Kasai Masai, Malin Lewis and The Henry Girls.

As well as the main concerts, the festival offers a full programme of free events.

Visitors can enjoy the popular Dance Festival featuring Morris, clog, Cornish and circle dancing groups, as well as the Fringe stage showcasing emerging talent from Somerset and further afield. Families can take part in crafts, singing and performance activities, while other attractions include poetry, archaeology and wildlife walks, ceilidhs and workshops.

A special highlight this year will be the Sunday festival procession led by Cornwall’s Lost Giants. The group has worked with children from Priddy Primary School to

create Priddy’s own giant, Fair Lady, who will make her debut tour of the village accompanied by musicians, Morris dancers and storytellers. Other free events include a performance by Orchestra Jovem das Gerais, a 30-piece youth orchestra from Brazil, and the Priddy Rising concert, showcasing talented young musicians from The Blue School in Wells.

Set around the village green on seven stages, Priddy Folk Festival is renowned for its friendly atmosphere. The festival is also run entirely by volunteers, continuing a tradition that began in 1991 when it was launched as a local PTA fundraiser.

Now in its 33rd year, the not-for-profit festival remains committed to supporting folk music, the arts and local community projects, ensuring its success benefits both future generations of performers and the village that hosts it.

Wells City Council trialling a monthly Sunday market SUNDAY MARKETS have arrived in Wells. As well as the regular Wednesday and Saturday markets, there is now a regular monthly Sunday one. The first Sunday market took place on the 14th of June, and five more in this pilot programme are planned before the end of the year.

The Sunday market dates are as follows n 12th July n 9th August n 13th September n 8th November n 12th-13th December – this final one of the year is a special twoday Christmas market.

If the markets are successful, additional Sunday and special event markets may be introduced in the future.

The programme will culminate in a two-day Christmas Market on 12th-13th December, which will be spread throughout the town centre. This festive weekend

will showcase even more stalls and be accompanied by displays and family-friendly activities, creating, organisers hope, one of the biggest seasonal events the town has hosted.

Wells actor in starring role WOODY COLLINS, a student at the Blue School, will play the leading role in a new play being shown at the Strode Theatre in Street at the end of July.

A Flooded Mind is the work of Braydon Smyth, a Strode College student, and focuses on a man’s struggles with schizophrenia.

Councillor goes the extra mile ON SATURDAY, 20th June, Councillor Edric Hobbs undertook his charity cycling attempt, and managed to cycle up the Old Bristol Road between Wells and Priddy an amazing 27 times in a total of 16 hours. This equates to a height of 18,000, which is higher than the Everest base camp.

Edric is raising funds to buy a defibrillator for Wells Town Hall and also the cabinet for the one recently installed at the Hunters’ Lodge Inn in Priddy.

“The defibrillator for the Town Hall will be donated in memory of my Mendip Hills Council colleague and former Mayor of Wells, Tony Robbins, who passed away in February this year,” he said.

n WHAT’S ON Studio and gallery update JULY WILL be a busy month for the Heritage Courtyard Gallery and Studios, as they are running their annual summer exhibition and open studios event from 17th – 19th of July.

You will be able to view some amazing work from their talented studio holders. Paintings, prints, ceramics and sculpture will be shown in the gallery space, while each studio will be open for you to view and to talk to their artists

Shepton Artists’ exhibition THE SHEPTON Artists’ summer exhibition will be held at the Wells & Mendip Museum from the 7th – 11th of July, and will showcase new works of art from eight Somerset-based artists.

Last year’s exhibitions brought in over 1,000 visitors per show, and organisers are hoping for even better numbers this year.

Visitors can expect a diverse

display of paintings, drawings, printmaking, collage and mixed media. Prints, cards and some affordable art will be available to purchase.

The public is invited to join the artists for a launch event on 7th July, from 6.30pm – 8.30pm, complete with complimentary Prosecco. Admission to both the exhibition and the launch is free.

RETIRING AT 90: Ann Cook, a well-known and much-loved photographer at the Glastonbury Festival, has decided to hang up her camera for good at the age of 90. Ann is celebrating this with a summer-long exhibition of her work at The Pressoir in the Courtyard, Sadler Street. Many festival luminaries attended the opening on 19th June, including fellow nonagenarian, Michael Eavis and his daughter, Emily.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES RICHARD III SOCIETY

The Society meets at Wells & Mendip Museum on the third Saturday of the month. Doors open at 12.30pm with the first talk starting at 1.30pm and the meeting concluding at 4pm. Refreshments are served between the first and second talk.

WELLS U3A When Paul Allen moved to Wells from Dunstable and joined the u3a, he was surprised to find that bowling was not on the long list of interests and activities covered. He remedied the situation by setting up a new group himself, and members have been quick to show their support. All levels of skill are welcome, and Paul and other experienced players are on hand to give advice and explain the rules.

The group meets every Thursday from 2pm to 3.30pm until the season ends in early September, and charges £3 per session. They play on the very attractive and well-maintained green on the Rec, near the Bishop’s Barn and the bandstand.

The well-attended monthly talks at the Wells & Mendip Museum had a nautical flavour in June, when Chris Day described some of the journeys he and his wife Nicky have made in their 36-foot yacht, Andando, around Scandinavia, Orkney and Shetland, and up to the Arctic Circle. Chris, who lives in Wells, is particularly interested in the Vikings and their way of life, and the huge journeys they undertook by sea with very basic means of navigation.

The next u3a talk at the museum will be on 8th July, when the speaker will be nationally acclaimed ceramicist Philippa Threlfall, who has been making relief murals since the 1960s. Her work is at sites all over the UK and abroad, and many will know her huge medieval map of Wells, which is on show at the side of the Tesco store in Wells.

Another thriving u3a group, who meet fortnightly on a Friday

Ann and Sue manning the u3a stall at Wells Market afternoon, are the Creative Writers.

They set themselves timed writing exercises, team up for joint projects, and occasionally have speakers from the literary world.

A group of u3a enthusiasts endured heavy rain on a very wet Saturday market day in early June to man their stall in front of the Town Hall. Luckily they were under the stone portico, and were able to explain the work of u3a and hand out membership forms.

The Wells u3a website (www. wells.u3asite.uk) gives details of the many groups on offer for the retired and semi-retired. There is a coffee morning every Thursday at the Portway Annexe from 10.30am to 11.30am, when anyone interested in joining can call by.

WELLS CIVIC SOCIETY Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May. Well, it was June, but in all other respects, the Bard was dead right so far as the evening of the Civic Society’s annual summer social was concerned and its plans to have bubbles and strawberries in the charming garden of the Wells Museum. But, of course, as in all well-run organisations, there is always a contingency plan to switch to if Plan A proves inoperable, and the executive were so right to relocate to the sanctuary of the lecture hall.

of people chatted, circulated, socialised and generally put the world to rights at this, the last open event of the Civic Society’s year. Of course, behind the scenes much will still be happening, as the energetic committee beavers away at all things civic and germane to Wells throughout the summer until open meetings resume in October. Please note that, for October only, this will be on the first Wednesday of the month, which is the seventh.

After that the meetings will revert to the accustomed second Wednesday each month, with light refreshments available.

Four arrangements of gold chrysanthemums and carnations with proteus were set on pillars to represent this way of buying and selling goods.

Continuing with Bristol’s trading history, her second design was in a large training shoe. Bristol was a large sea trading port, and in the 1830s Samuel Plimsoll developed the Plimsoll line, which ensured that ships were properly stacked to avoid them sinking. An arrangement of dark red roses and sweet Williams, as well as peonies and spray chrysanthemums, represented this very important invention which has saved thousands of lives.

A more modern event was the foundation of Jenny’s next arrangement – the Bristol Balloon Festival. Large baskets were filled with a range of grasses and flowering wild flowers, such as cornflowers, feverfew and white irises, to give a wonderful effect of a balloon flying over the beautiful countryside around Bristol. Jenny thanked her sister for growing all the flowers on her allotment.

Of course, one of Bristol’s biggest exports involves Aardman productions. Jenny had made an ark-shaped container to hold her arrangement, which was a mixture of anthuriums and a new single-headed alstroemeria, and was captained by Wallace and his faithful friend, Gromit.

Finally, no demonstration representing Bristol would be complete without the Suspension Bridge. Two black containers were filled with apricot-coloured amaryllis, purple alliums and

MENDIP FIBROMYALGIA SUPPORT GROUP The time passed so quickly as we listened intently to our speakers, Audrey and Ed Standhalf, who entertained us with a history of Charley Wesley and his life in Wells – we did not want it to end.

In July we are having a chatting session to answer questions and concerns any members may have.

We do not give medical advice but are caring listeners, especially to those who live alone. We will nor be meeting in August as our organisers are away.

The group meets at Binegar and Gurney Slade Memorial Hall between 10.30am – 12.30pm on the first Wednesday of the month.

WELLS MEN’S BREAKFAST We were delighted to welcome inspirational local speaker Helen

McCann to our June Breakfast event, accompanied by her guide dog, Poppy.

Helen has lived with hearing loss all her life but did not learn until her late 20s that she would also lose her sight by the age of 40.

A maths teacher at the time, she spoke movingly about receiving this devastating news and adapting to the progressive loss of her vision.

Helen continued teaching for some time, with many of her students unaware that her sight was deteriorating. During her talk, she passed around a pair of glasses to help attendees understand the type of sight loss she experiences.

When she eventually had to leave teaching, Helen chose to face the challenge with remarkable positivity and determination. She explained how guide dogs are matched with people living with sight loss, and what it is like to depend upon and care for such a special companion.

Helen also described how she responded by taking on a series of marathons, raising more than £140,000 for Guide Dogs, writing a book, and becoming a member of ITV’s Diversity and Inclusion Panel.

WELLS & DISTRICT WILDLIFE GROUP In June the group had a field visit to Park Wood just outside Wells led by Barbara Lakin, who is landscape officer for Somerset County Council. support. Glades and clearings within in the wood also support a range of wildlife, including butterflies and other insects.

I have been seeing lots of painted lady butterflies in my garden recently – up to three at any one time around my verbena plants. They look very similar to a red admiral but are pinky-orange rather than red in colour. The massive influx of painted lady butterflies in the UK is driven by the recent favourable spring weather and strong southerly winds that carry them from sub-Saharan and North Africa, combined with a bumper breeding cycle in those regions.

The group has arranged a glowworm walk this month which has proved very popular. So much so that this event and another glowworm walk arranged for August are now fully booked. According to the wildlife trusts, the flightless females are the ones who do most of the glowing, climbing up tall grass stalks, producing a greenish light to attract males (who look like typical beetles) as they fly along open areas in search of a mate.

This bioluminescence is created through a chemical reaction in the beetle’s abdomen. It’s not only the female that glows as the larvae can glow as well, and even glow-worm eggs can emit light. If you were disappointed this time then look out for the field visit coming up in August, details of which will be available next month.

ST. THOMAS WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP Our secretary, Alison, took our June meeting and treated us to an episode of Highway with Harry Secombe, which was filmed at the Guide centre in Dorset.

With some of us having been involved with Guiding, and several mothers among us who had girls in Brownies and Guides, it was interesting to get an inside view of Foxlease. The organisation was started by the wife of Lord Baden Powell so that girls could experience some of the activities that were being afforded to boys.

It has stood the test of time and still has a strong and successful programme of subjects to aid the development of young girls. There was lively discussion afterwards about our own and our children’s memories.

Next month we meet on Wednesday, 1st July at 7pm in St. Thomas Church Hall, when we will welcome Ruth Ames-White who will be getting us up to date with her progress on the very large mosaic she has been working on. If any ladies are interested in joining us, please come along to our next meeting where you will be made very welcome.

COXLEY & DISTRICT WI Firstly we welcomed Christine D as a visitor to our well-attended meeting. Peggy then reported on our very successful recent Jumble sale – well done to everyone!

Our walking ladies group enjoyed their walk up Glastonbury Tor this month.

Karen reported on the craft club as they continue to be very industrious, with many things being made for various good causes.

Unfortunately our skittles team did not win when they played against Taunton Divas. However they acquitted themselves well and enjoyed themselves greatly.

Our last book, All Passion Spent

by Vita Sackville-West, had a mixed reception by our book club ladies.

However, it was energetically discussed.

The ladies that assisted at the Bath & West Show WI refreshments worked hard but still managed to enjoy their day out.

We then welcomed Kylie Gallagher from the West of England Children’s Hospice. She gave us an informative talk about the history of the organisation. It is for the children (and families of children) who have limited life expectancy directly from birth – as opposed to an illness that may occur during childhood. Many referrals come from the Bristol Children’s Hospital where these babies go directly after birth.

Support, respite and lifeenhancing activities are all provided for the children, as well as the parents and siblings. It’s very much a supportive environment in what is a very challenging time.

This is ongoing up until the age of 18.

The talk was supported by slides of the sites and facilities provided. Our vote of thanks was given to Jenny.

WELLS MONDAY WI A recent read by our book club was Precipice by Robert Harris. The novel centres on the scandalous affair between Prime Minister H.H. Asquith and the 26-year-old aristocrat Venetia Stanley, sparking plenty of lively discussion.

The founders of the Standing with Giants charity, Dan and Janette Barton, were guests at ‘The Not Forgotten’ garden party recently held at Buckingham Palace. They had the honour of displaying 20 of their giants on the palace lawn alongside poppies lovingly crafted by The Women’s Institute and other contributors.

In total, 110,849 poppies were created. The giants have since been on display at the British Normandy Memorial to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings.

‘Water’ was the theme for our Art for Pleasure group, inspiring works depicting rivers, lakes, ponds and the sea.

Ebbor Gorge was the destination chosen by the walking group, while the Strollers followed the Blue Plaques Trial, discovering fascinating facts about our city that many had not known before.

Head Gardener James Cross from The Bishop’s Palace led a guided tour of the grounds, sharing his extensive knowledge with a group of our members.

Whether blessed with green fingers or simply inspired by the beautiful flower beds and productive vegetable garden, there was plenty to admire, sketch, paint or photograph.

Meanwhile, our gardening group has been busy at Portway Annexe, planting herbs and flowers that attract pollinators. These additions will help provide food and shelter, complementing the Bug Hotel created last autumn.

CITY OF WELLS PROBUS CLUB The speaker at our June meeting was Richard Rickitt, co-editor of Bee Craft magazine. Richard gave us a talk on the amazing honey bee. He first explained the anatomy of the honey bee, including its eyes, jaws, glands, antenna, wings and hairs. Honey bees have been around for a long time, as evidenced by a 30-millionyear-old fossil and a cave painting 30,000 years old. He described the history and evolution of hives and explained the roles of workers, drones and queens. He also talked about communication and explained how we understand the language of bees.

Richard told us that honey has less than 18 per cent water content so it won’t ferment and keeps for ever. He asked us to support bee keepers, to buy local honey and plant flowers. This was a fascinating and educational talk from an expert, followed by questions and answers.

WELLS TUESDAY WI The weather has not been kind to us of late meaning we haven’t been able to play rounders or have our trial croquet sessions but fingers crossed we will be able to do that soon.

It was rather wet for The Bishop’s Palace Garden Party but the competitions were well supported and entries well up on last year. The added craft categories were really successful, so hopefully this is something we can build on. Well done to everyone who entered and the Wells Tuesday ladies who ran it.

Our last meeting focused on photography, with a fascinating insight into the use of a modern pinhole camera, and then instructions on how to improve our phone photography. We have had a photography group since Covid and still meet on Zoom to admire our photos, but there is always something new to learn and we were lucky to have Richard Goldsmith come and speak to us.

Luckily not all subgroups are weather dependant. We have been meeting at Blossom’s for our weekly coffee and knitting and crafting. We are looking

WELLS ROTARY CLUB Last month, Wells Rotary took 180 disadvantaged and disabled kids from Brookside and Avalon Schools, together with their carers and teachers, to Longleat for the day. It was challenging, but extremely rewarding seeing how much it meant to them.

We also brought a smile to the winners of our balloon ride raffle, who took off just a couple of days after their win at the Festival of Running, which we organised with Wells Harriers, raising over £5,000 for local charities. If your organisation needs funds for local good causes supporting the disadvantaged or homeless, improving the mental or physical wellbeing of the community, encouraging youth participation activities or supporting young people generally, you can apply for grants from Wells Rotary.

Since 1978 we have been running a service which provides

a talking newspaper for blind and partially sighted people in our community. We have a group of readers, not all Rotarians, who take it in turns to record their voices reading the local newspapers each week. They then deliver their recordings to another member of the group who copies them onto USB sticks which the postman then collects and delivers to our listeners. We are currently looking for someone to help with the copying, which takes about one hour each week. We are pressing ahead with planning and building the new sensory garden at Stoberry School, which we hope to have completed by the start of the autumn term.

And we have expanded our Listening Project into Whitstone School where, together with some members of Shepton Mallet Rotary Club, we have begun to listen to the new intake who started school in September, helping to improve their reading and literacy where needed.

We are also progressing our other ongoing activities, such as maintaining and expanding the Wells defibrillators, while continuing to explore possible new projects and events to benefit the local community.

Wells Chess Club secures Knockout Trophy CHESS STILL BASKING in the success at the Somerset Championships in Frome last month, Wells Chess Club had the small matter of the final of the Somerset Cup to play.

Standout junior Leon Nelson had shown great class in winning the Denys Bonner Trophy and the title of Somerset Champion for 2026. As newly crowned Somerset Champion, he spearheaded the six-player team that travelled to Yeovil on a hot and humid night a fortnight later.

The teams were evenly matched on paper, but it was Wells that seized the initiative.

Juniors Gigi Ionescu and Leon Nelson chalked up early wins which rattled the hosts and instilled confidence in the visiting Wells team.

It set the dominoes in motion as wins soon followed for Greg Roome, Phil Johnson and Jamie Eales. By the time captain Matt Goatcher won the final game, Wells had sealed an emphatic and unprecedented 6-0 victory, winning on all six boards. It caps

of a successful season for the club who look forward to a summer break to regroup and prepare for next season.

In the Somerset Leagues this year, Wells finished a close second in Division 1 with strong performances from Phil Johnson, Leon Nelson and Chris Strong.

In Division 2 they finished third with notable performances from Greg Roome and Roger Morgan.

While in Division 3 they finished third with a great showing from Jon Rossi and promising junior Zino Zigan.

News also came from last month’s Frome Congress that Jon Rossi had won a rating prize for his unbeaten run over the weekend.

Mens Competition Results The Jock Callaghan Trophy attracted a field of 140 players and the winner, for the second week in a row, was Mario Rolli with a brilliant nett 65, winning on countback from Eric Jordan.

Special mention to George Morgan for his fine gross 69 and to last year’s Mens Club Captain, Jack Hayes with a superb gross 70.

The winner, with a magnificent score of 143 over the 36 holes, was Lauren Cowley from Broome Manor. Lauren won by four shots from Harrison Barnett from Thorpe Hall.

The Mendip Junior Vase attracted a field of 55 juniors from around the area, and the winning score of 42 points came from Ruby Spencer of Wells Golf Cub, closely followed by Harriet Isaacs from Burnham & Berrow Golf Club.

This event also doubled as the Somerset Junior Team Championship, and the winning team going through to the National Finals at Woodhall Spa is Burnham & Berrow B Team.

Junior member, Tate SinfieldDay, played in the Somerset Junior Championship, and with a score of 72 and 69 he won the U16 and U18 Championship at Oake

England Golf ‘Race to Woodhall Spa’ Mendip Golf Club member, Rebecca Edwards and Club President, John Shakesby, qualified for the England Golf ‘Race to Woodhall Spa’ regional final at Hockley Golf Club on Sunday, 24th May. Rebecca won her division with 31 points and John won his division with 33 points. Both players will now go through to the National Final at Woodhall Spa in August. Huge congratulations to both!

Seniors Competition Results 92 Seniors came together for the annual Senior Captain’s Charity Day on Friday in support of Teenage Cancer Trust. The weather was extremely kind (until two holes from home) and the course was presented beautifully.

This resulted in some fantastic results with the captain’s team scoring 52 but being barred from taking their prizes by the captain.

Club now halfway though the tennis season TENNIS WE ARE AT the halfway point in the league season at Wells Tennis Club, and we are very fortunate to have four teams in both the ladies’ and men’s divisions. We have teams competing in Division 1 through to Division 7, giving

all members the opportunity to experience competitive tennis whatever their standard.

The start of the season has been plagued with wet and windy weather but also injuries, meaning team changes have also taken their toll. This week was the first week teams had calmer,

drier conditions to try and play their ‘true’ tennis game! It led to wins for the Ladies’ A and C teams, with other teams narrowly missing out but still coming home with much-needed points.

On a social level, our Fun French Open Tournament was a great success. Lots of fun was had on court and then everyone enjoyed an amazing spread of
