Retiring officer receives top award

By Philip Welch WELLS’ leading police officer has retired and been honoured with a Mayor’s Award.

Highly respected PC Darren Pearson spent 20 of his 25 years’ service in the city – the last 16 as Beat Manager.

“This is the end of an era.

Darren is irreplaceable; the last of the old school,” said his boss, Sergeant Simon Lancey.

Wells Mayor Denise Denis paid tribute to Darren as she presented him with the Mayor’s Award to acknowledge and his 25 years of service to the community.

“This award is in recognition of your dedication and service to Wells, and for carrying out your role and duties with fairness, sound judgement in what must be very tricky circumstances at times, respecting all people and showing sensitivity to the victims in those situations.

Unfortunately as he came in as a stray, we have no history on him but he’s estimated to be around three years old. He was unneutered when he first came into care and had clearly lived a rough life but his funny and sweet personality still shone through, especially when the full body wiggles overtook him when he was feeling especially affectionate!

He can be easily spooked by things but he’s a sweet boy who likes affection on his own terms but he’ll always be happy to see you.

We are looking to home him as an only pet in a child-free home.

He can take a little time to get used to new spaces and people, so he will need someone who will give him time to come out of his shell. The home must be well away from busy, fast or main roads.

One special memory for Darren dates from Mary Rand being granted Freedom of the City in 2012. The athlete who was born in Hervey Road, Wells and went to the Blue School, won three medals at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.

There was a parade through Wells, huge crowds and fascination with seeing the Olympic medals. Darren was holding all three that Mary had won and a crowd of children were desperate to see them.

Mary told him: “Let the kids play with them,” which he did, and of course ensured the medals safe return.

Darren’s son Callum is a PC who was working in Frome but joined the team covering Street two days before his Dad retired.

So, very briefly, there were two Pearsons working in the local policing team and they went on patrol together in Wells.

Police partnership comes to an end PC Dan Williams and his good friend and colleague Darren Pearson have worked together in the local force for more than 20 years and solely in Wells together for more than seven years.

“We come as a package and the other one is never very far away,” said Dan. “Talk about round peg, round hole. Darren was a perfect fit for Wells. After living in the area for so many years and raising his family in Wells, you couldn’t ask for a more dedicated and motivated officer.

“Working so many years together has been an incredible

journey. We have experienced some horrific incidents, but I can honestly say that most shifts have resulted in us both smiling and laughing.

“The most memorable times were on cycle patrol together around Wells, as you never know what you may stumble across.

We chased shoplifters, car thieves and wanted people.

“We both feel privileged to be living and working in the Wells area. Darren will be a huge loss to the city and to my personal working life; he’s a great friend.

“It has been a privilege to work with Darren.”

A freedom that’s worth shouting about

By Philip Welch LEN Sweales has been made a Freeman of the City in recognition of his outstanding 25 years’ service as a brilliant Town Crier and supporter of so many charities.

Here is how the special day unfolded on 18th July.

First Len and his wife Rosemary were collected from their Wells home by the WCN trishaw and taken on a ride around the city.

Second the trishaw stopped outside the Bishop’s Eye where Len’s successor as Town Crier, Phil Dickson, gave a cry tailored to Len and the fact he was going to be made a Freeman of the City.

Third Len and Rosemary were invited into the Town Hall ballroom where Len was presented with a framed citation and

formally made a Freeman, one of the highest civic honours that can be bestowed by the city council.

It is reserved for individuals who have made an outstanding and enduring contribution to the city and its community.

Then Len and Rosemary were treated to a civic reception with drinks and a light lunch.

Mayor of Wells, Denise Denis, said: “Len Sweales has given an extraordinary amount of his time, energy and passion to the City of Wells over many decades.

“While many will know him as our Town Crier, those who have worked alongside him know that his contribution extends far beyond that role. He has been a steadfast supporter of countless community initiatives and a true ambassador for our city.”

Len himself said: “After 25 years serving as Wells Town

A very deserved award for a very popular man. Congratulations, Les! Crier, the time was right for me to retire and pass the baton on to a much younger person, step forward Phil Dickson.

“I knew I would miss all the activities associated with the post, but I had no idea how much I was appreciated by all and sundry, as the last few weeks have proved.

“This has culminated in me being recommended to be a Freeman of this wonderful city.

Thank you to the councillor who nominated me, and the council for supporting it.

“I have worked with all the charities in Wells over the years, and it is these volunteers who have done the hard work, I have merely been their mouthpiece.

“I am totally humbled and proud to be a Freeman, and hope I can live up to the position. I am still coming to terms with receiving this prestigious honour, but I will give it my all.

“Thank you everyone for putting up with me over the years, you have made an old man feel very happy.”

Paul Lavender knows his family can walk to St Cuthbert’s safely, as the walk to Stoberry Park means ‘the nightmare crossing at Ash Lane/College Road’.

Campaigner and local resident Liz Pedley said: “The majority of people we spoke to

have seen or know of a near miss at the junction of the A39 with College Road and Ash Lane, but the police only know of six incidents in the last five years.

“People aren’t reporting what goes on here and so the police and the Council have no idea of how dangerous this junction is.”

Festival funds theatre workshops for schools THIS JULY, Wells Theatre Festival provided fully funded creative workshops for local schools with the Somerset-based aKa Dance Theatre Company.

Four schools took part this year, with teachers praising the experience for their pupils.

Co-founded by Jen Grant and Joe Garbett in 2014, aKa Dance Theatre Company is based at the Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre in Taunton. The company creates performances for a variety of indoor and outdoor settings, with a focus on making the arts accessible and enjoyable for everyone while bringing communities together.

Thanking festival organisers for providing the workshops, Tiffiny Garstang, Shakespeare Class teacher at St Joseph and St Teresa’s Catholic Primary School, said: “aKa Dance Theatre Company led a fun and engaging session, teaching the children expressive, theatrical dance. After several fun warm-

Shout out for volunteers on Moat Boat Race day VOLUNTEERS from across Wells have come together to strengthen a fun-filled tradition.

The Moat Boat Race has been a major August Bank Holiday attraction since the 1960s and added this year are: n The new Wells Town Crier Phil Dickson in full uniform will start the races with his very loud shout. n A Sunday Market in Wells Market Place on Bank Holiday Monday. n The return of entertainment stalls on the Recreation Ground with a programme of acoustic bands playing on the Bandstand. n A Design Your Own Raft drawing competition for children. n The refreshment break for sailors and volunteers has been reduced to 45 minutes to streamline the flow of races.

A fitting farewell for a popular headteacher RETIRING HEADTEACHER Helen Mullinger was given a series of touching surprises over the remaining days of her final week, as St Cuthbert’s Junior School marked the end of her 11 years at the helm.

The celebrations began in the school hall, where pupils had gathered in secret to await Mrs Mullinger’s arrival. She was invited to sit beneath an arch of blue, white and gold balloons before the entire school performed a specially rehearsed song.

Pupils from each class then took turns to sing and read personal tributes, celebrating the much-loved headteacher’s time at the school. Staff and children also produced a video featuring themselves wearing Helen Mullinger masks and dancing to Pharrell Williams’ Happy – a fitting tribute to the impact she has made during her time as headteacher.

Helen during her tour around the school in the WCN’s trishaw Wells Mayor Denise Denis presented Mrs Mullinger with a letter from Wells City Council, thanking her for her dedication and the lasting legacy she leaves behind. The letter praised her for enriching the lives of

countless pupils, helping them grow in confidence as well as achieve academically.

Hedge removal sparks local concern WELLS residents were shocked to discover that a large section of hedgerow had been removed on the south side of Elm Close by David Wilson Homes, who are currently developing the area to create around 100 new homes.

Local objection to the hedge removal largely focuses on the fact that, traditionally, hedgerows are used by birds for nesting.

The nesting season in the UK is between February and August, and it is illegal to intentionally damage or destroy an active bird’s nest under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

A representative from Natural England has been on site almost daily, and a section of the hedgerow has been left due to it containing nesting sparrows.

It will then be removed when the Natural England ecologist permits it.

The site officer for the development recently confirmed

there is a section that will require thinning out to accommodate a wider path – the plans for the site include a three-metre wide footpath or potential cycle path.

MP Tessa Munt recently uploaded a video to social media taken at the site.

“I was really shocked to see how much of the decades-old hedge had been ripped out by the property developers,” she said. “I have reported this to the authorities, and I understand they’re investigating.

“This kind of environmental vandalism is completely unnecessary and unacceptable.

It’s about time that house builders treated the natural environment with care. I’ve been asked by local residents to keep a watching brief, and I intend to do exactly that.”

Join the Lawrence Centre team A WELLS CHARITY that has been helping older people stay active, independent and connected for more than a decade is appealing for new volunteers as it looks to expand its services and reach even more people across the area.

The Lawrence Centre, based in Wells, was established in 2012 to provide a welcoming and stimulating environment for older people, particularly those living with memory loss and other health conditions. The charity aims to reduce loneliness and social isolation while also giving carers a valuable break.

Manager Maggie Charlesworth said the idea was born from a desire to create something very different from the traditional image of a day centre.

“I wanted to provide a stimulating, fun environment for people,” she said. “We wanted somewhere people could come, enjoy themselves and make friends, rather than simply sitting around with very little to do.”

Since opening, the centre has grown steadily and now runs sessions five days a week, together with a monthly Saturday group, welcoming people from Wells as well as Shepton Mallet, Street and surrounding villages.

Each day begins with tea, coffee and conversation before visitors enjoy a varied programme of activities including music, quizzes, arts and crafts, guest speakers and gentle exercise.

“People come on the same day each week, so they get to know one another,” Maggie said.

“Even people living with memory loss recognise familiar faces and routines, and those friendships become really important.”

The centre also operates an outreach service for people who are unable or reluctant to attend group sessions. The scheme grew out of the Covid pandemic, when staff and volunteers visited isolated residents in their own homes to provide companionship and maintain regular social contact.

“We realised there were people who simply weren’t ready to come to a group setting, but they still needed somebody to visit and spend time with them,”

Maggie explained. “It’s all about companionship.”

The Lawrence Centre is supported by an experienced team of staff and volunteers,

including retired healthcare professionals, but Maggie says more help is urgently needed.

“We could really do with another volunteer driver on a Monday, and we’d also love more volunteers to spend time with people here at the centre,” she said.

Volunteer drivers collect visitors from home in the morning and take them back after the sessions, making it possible for many people to attend who would otherwise struggle to get there.

“We’ve got an amazing team and it’s such a happy place,” she said. “We get so many lovely comments from people about the difference it makes. We’d love more people to come along and be part of it.”

How Wells is helping the youth of the city I would like to reflect on the youth of Wells, particularly as, at the end of the scholastic year, I was invited to attend several events such as an open day for a preschool nursery, end of year plays and concerts, Careers Day at the Blue School for Year 10s, speech days with farewells to long-serving Headteachers at Wells Cathedral School (Alistair Tighe) and St Cuthbert’s Junior School (Helen Mullinger), as well as the students moving onto to the next stages in their future education or working future.

Wells Blue School is the largest secondary schools in Somerset, serving over 1,500 students. Wells Cathedral School is smaller, at 800 pupils, and the total of junior school students in Wells is around 3,000.

These figures are not insignificant, even though the percentage of over 65s is higher than the national average. What I learnt from my visits was that our young people are to be valued and nurtured, and that they display an amazing range and wealth of talent, energy, and enthusiasm in their schools and extracurricular activities.

Wells City Council plays a part in the extra provision to

youth, offering work experience, supporting the Youth Club at the Elim Centre and the Thrive welcome hub youth provision for displaced members of our community.

Last year the mayor’s charity (set up by Cllr L Agabani) promoted the fundraising for the proposed new skate park, and Wells City Council has just agreed a £100,000 grant to that project [head to page 27 for more information on this], as well as developing a Play and Leisure Strategy. Have you spotted the lovely new table tennis table on the Wells Recreation Ground?

I will be appointing the Air Cadets to support me in my Mayoral role this year, and I look forward to seeing the introduction of a Wells City Youth Council in the Autumn (an initiative that was promoted by a previous Mayor, Cllr Jasmine Browne). This will be a fantastic opportunity for young people in Wells to have a voice and be heard in the city. I do hope that this will be the start of many more ideas in which young people can be engaged with and valued.

WHEN LOCAL BOY Tom Benson walked into the Wells Trading Post, little did he know that he was going to find an album with some real family history behind it.

Nestling among the Trading Post’s impressive vinyl collection was a copy of Harry Nilsson’s acclaimed 1973 album, A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night. And that was especially interesting to Tom because his grandfather, Peter Benson, was one of the musicians that performed on it.

Peter Benson was a session musician who played violin on a number of classic songs, including The Power of Love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Your Song by Elton John, Nothing Compares to You by Sinéad O’Connor, and a song called Hey Jude by a little-known Liverpool band called The Beatles.

n NEWS Dance school delights crowds with annual show THE RECENT Dance Fusion Wells annual showcase at the Wookey Hole Theatre was a stunning display of talent across the whole age range of the performers.

Split into two very different halves, the first part was inspired

by The Greatest Showman, while the second half was composed of a series of routines from the senior dancers.

From group displays to intimate solo performances, the whole showcase was an entertaining and joyous experience from beginning to end.

Founded in 2018 by owner and principal Bekki Oats, Dance Fusion Wells has grown into a vibrant recreational dance company, bringing together more than 160 students aged 4 to 22

from across the local community.

Offering classes for both boys and girls, Dance Fusion Wells provides a unique training experience by combining a variety of dance styles within each class. n ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE Local woman loses 5½ stone and rebuilds confidence A Wells woman is celebrating an incredible transformation after losing an amazing 5½ stone since joining her local Slimming World group in October 2025.

After giving up smoking, Beckie found herself gaining weight and feeling the impact both physically and mentally. Determined to make a change, she joined Slimming World alongside her sister and decided to put her health first.

That one decision has led to a lifechanging result.

Wookey Hole Caves: A source of inspiration Neil Morgan, a cave guide supervisor at Wookey Hole, brings us another fascinating regular slice of history from the caves…

Wookey Hole’s inner and new grottoes reopen after half a century – exclusively on the Wookey Uncovered Heritage Tour. When you’ve visited Wookey Hole Caves, have you ever noticed and wondered what lies at the top of the stone staircase as you enter the first chamber, The Witch’s Kitchen?

More than a century after their discovery, the New and Inner Grottoes have reopened as part of the Wookey Uncovered Heritage Tour and Tasting, the only tour that includes entry to both grottoes.

The story began in the early 1900s, when amateur archaeologist Herbert Balch noticed a sand-covered ledge on entering The Witch’s Kitchen that suggested an unexplored passageway.

Acting on his instinct, Balch worked alongside Mr Reginald Troup and Wilfred Hiley and his family, and cut a trench through the ancient silt. Their effort paid off as, beyond a cramped opening, the

ceiling suddenly soared to 10 metres, revealing a chamber so richly decorated with stalactites, stalagmite pillars and delicate curtain stalactites that it was named the Fairy Palace. A slender stalagmite pillar, barely 5cm thick yet standing almost 1.5m tall, became one of the New Grotto’s main features, called The Sentinel.

In 1927, when Wookey Hole Caves opened to the public, the New Grotto was part of the original cave tour.

A further breakthrough came in 1929, when three men spent five months cutting a seven-metre passage through solid rock, opening access to an equally spectacular Inner Grotto beyond.

Progress deeper into the system was eventually halted by a dense curtain of columns named The Grille, beyond which lay a tight squeeze known to explorers as Purgatory, or, as today, Flat World, a place I’ve visited myself on two occasions, to recreate photographs originally taken by Harry Savory in the early 1900s.

best known for his theatrical poster and advertising work, who painted views of Wookey Hole Caves in 1928 and 1931.

These original paintings are on display today in the mill, available to view during the cheese and cider tasting part of the Wookey Uncovered Heritage Tour and Tasting.

Visitors continued to pass through the grottoes on their way out of the caves until March 1975, when a new tunnel, Kilmersdon Tunnel, redirected the exit route into the valley behind the restored paper mill, which became part of the attraction. With no further use, the original stairway and the two grottoes were removed from the public tour.

Now, 51 years on, the New and Inner Grottoes have been brought back into the visitor experience, but this time, access is exclusive to the Wookey Uncovered Heritage Tour and Tasting.

If you’re dreaming of a holiday without leaving town, Wells Cathedral School’s swimming pool is the next best thing. Housed in a bright glass atrium, the pool’s sliding doors open on sunny days, giving it the feel of an outdoor pool. Add in the free-to-use floats and swim toys, and it has all the fun of a holiday park!

Key info: £6 for adults and £4 for over 4s, and under 4s are free. It’s more affordable than the leisure centre, and, in my opinion, is a much more enjoyable experience.

The only downside is the cramped changing rooms, but the pool more than makes up for it.

The Square Coming in a close second, and so worthy of an honourable mention, is The Square Soft Play Centre on Priory Road. It too enables you to take advantage of the Summer Saving Scheme.

The Square is fun at any time, but perfect for when you have little ones with too much energy and it’s chucking it down outside!

Most people only become aware of it when something goes wrong, usually by then it is too late.

Title investigation is simply the process of confirming that the person selling or leasing the property actually owns it and has the right to do so, and that there are no hidden issues that will later cause problems for a potential buyer or tenant. This process ensures they are getting exactly what they think they are paying for.

Checking the Land Registry records When a solicitor or conveyancer carries out a title investigation, they will start by reviewing the title documents held by the Land Registry. The title register sets out who owns the property, where the boundaries lie and the legal rights and obligations attached to the land.

Restrictions and covenants One of the most important parts of the investigation is identifying restrictions or covenants. These are rules that have been attached to the land by previous owners. Some are straightforward, such as not being able to build an extension that blocks a neighbour’s light, but others can be extremely limiting.

For example, you may not be able to keep certain animals, park a caravan on the driveway or even paint fences a particular colour.

Without proper title investigation,

you may end up with a property you cannot use in the way you intended.

Rights of Way and easements Another key area is checking for any rights of way or easements.

These give other people the right to use part of your land. Most of the time these are harmless things such as shared parking, a shared access path or underground pipes.

But occasionally these rights can be inconvenient, such as a public footpath crossing your garden.

Mortgages and charges It is also important to check for mortgages or charges registered against the property. These must be removed before completion, otherwise the buyer could unintentionally inherit someone else’s debt. Title investigation ensures that the seller settles any outstanding charges so that the buyer or new tenant receives the property with a clean title.

Why title investigation protects buyers and tenants In summary, title investigation is about certainty and helps to avoid any surprises after purchasing or renting a property. Property is often the biggest investment someone will ever make, and any hidden issues in the title can lead to unexpected costs, disputes or limitations on how the property can be used.

FOLLOWING on from Christian Aid Week in Wells and Wookey this May, the house-to-house collection from envelopes distributed with Wells Voice raised £2,266.72. The Methodist Church Coffee Morning produced £220 and St Thomas’ Church Coffee Stop £200.

Proceeds from services in the Methodist and United Churches yielded £427, and the Christian Aid service in the Cathedral £455.98. The street collection on Saturday, 16th May raised a further £366.91.

Together with other contributions, the overall total resulted in £4,029.84 being raised for Christian Aid. The Wells Christian Aid committee is grateful to all who contributed to this very successful fundraising campaign.

Their volunteers weeded and tidied the greenery then painted the woodwork.

“Our outdoor spaces play a vital role in supporting mental health, wellbeing and recovery,” said the charity’s Service Manager Bridget Harvey, “and today’s hard work will make a real difference to everyone who visits.

“Corporate sponsorships with Charlie Bigham’s are invaluable to charities like ours.

They help us to improve our

facilities, strengthen connections and ensure we can continue providing life-changing support across Somerset.

The charity’s clients plant and nurture vegetables in the gardens which are also used as a place to sit quietly.

Charities benefit from comedy gala THE WELLS Comedy Festival’s 10th Anniversary Gala delivered more than a weekend of laughs this year – it also provided a significant boost for local causes.

Organisers Plosive confirmed the milestone event raised an impressive £4,962.40 for charities in and around Wells. The festival, now firmly

established as one of the city’s standout cultural events, attracted large crowds throughout its anniversary celebrations, with organisers praising the generosity of audiences who contributed to the fundraising total.

The money was shared between local charities, with half going to Wells Storehouse, which

runs the town’s foodbank and furniture store.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Plosive and to everyone who attended,” said Paul Wiltshire, one of the trustees at the charity. “This support makes a real difference and will provide a welcome boost for our community work.”

Each year the festival raises around £600, which is a significant contribution to the charity’s work supporting local people during difficult times.

You should always be alert when walking your dog in an unfamiliar area

There’s a Sting in the Tail for this Spaniel’s Holiday BEE STINGS are a common summer hazard for both animals and people.

Most dogs stung on the muzzle or paw only need antihistamines and recover quickly. However, in rare cases, an allergic reaction or a large number of stings can cause severe illness similar to snake envenomation. This was the case for cocker spaniel, Cooper, who required two nights in hospital.

Cooper had only just arrived on holiday in Devon when disaster struck.

While out on a walk, he was suddenly attacked by a large swarm of bees as he stopped to go to the toilet. Cooper and his owner ran back to their campervan, both being stung repeatedly. At one point, Cooper looked as though he was wearing a coat of bees, with many stinging his belly and legs. By the time they escaped, both dog and owner were badly shaken. Cooper was uncomfortable, unusually quiet and, after speaking to the duty vet, was given antihistamines and pain relief.

The following day, Cooper was still unwell. He refused food, was breathing more quickly than normal and, most worryingly, his urine had turned almost black. His owners cut their holiday short and brought him to the practice.

During examination, several bee stingers were still embedded in his skin and he was very sore. A urine sample resembled Coca-Cola.

Blood and urine tests revealed severe muscle damage. His urine contained large amounts of myoglobin, a muscle protein released after injury, while his blood showed extremely high levels of creatine kinase (CK), an enzyme indicating muscle damage.

The CK levels were literally beyond the laboratory machine’s measuring range.

These substances can overwhelm the kidneys, putting them at risk of failure, so Cooper was admitted for

intravenous fluids to flush the toxins from his system.

Overnight, Cooper received pain relief and supportive care. Although he had a mild temperature and was limping, he managed his first meal since the attack. The next morning, his urine had lightened in colour, but his CK levels remained too high to measure, so he stayed for another day.

By the third day, Cooper was much brighter. His limp and temperature had improved, he was eating normally and his urine had become a deep orange colour. His CK levels had fallen enough to be measured, although they remained above normal.

Encouragingly, his kidneys had suffered no lasting damage, allowing him to return home.

Daily blood tests showed his CK levels continued to fall, returning to normal by the end of the week. Cooper made a full recovery and is now back to his usual happy self.

Cooper’s experience is a reminder that, although most bee stings are minor, large swarms can cause serious illness in dogs. Owners should take extra care when walking near hives or areas where bees may be nesting.

A Wells institution IN AN AGE when independent high street shops face evergrowing competition from online retailers, one Wells business is proving that traditional customer service never goes out of fashion.

Whiting and Son celebrated its 90th anniversary on the 10th of July, marking nine decades of serving the city from its premises in Broad Street. The family-run ironmongers has been part of Wells life since 1936 and is now in its fourth generation, with owner Michelle Machin hoping the business will continue well into the future.

“It was started by my grandfather,” Michelle explained.

“He worked for Barnes and Son, who were ironmongers in Wells – their shop was where the Fosso Lounge is now. When the owner wanted to retire, my grandfather took over the business and moved it here.”

The premises, bought for the princely sum of £1,000, was

originally much smaller than today’s shop. Over the years the building expanded, while the range of goods changed with the times.

“We sold water tanks, batteries, Hoover appliances and even bicycles,” Michelle said. “During the war years we also charged radio accumulators for farms across the Mendips.

People needed them because that was how they listened to the news back then.”

The business name also carries a poignant family story.

Although it has always traded as Whiting and Son, Michelle explained that the ‘Son’ never came home from WWII. “My uncle Morris Whiting was a Spitfire pilot. Sadly, he was killed just before VJ Day, so the business has always remained Whiting and Son.” Michelle joined the business after finishing her A-Levels and has spent more than five decades

n MESSAGE FROM THE MP

Taking local issues to Westminster Thoughts of Wells and Mendip Hills MP Tessa Munt Hello everyone. It’s been another busy month both here and in Westminster.

Locally, I am delighted that after Fusion Lifestyle went into administration, our local leisure facilities were saved initially through the support of Somerset Council and now, for the medium term, by Freedom Leisure. I hope that ultimately, a solution can be found to ensure that Wells Leisure Centre continues to be a part of our community for long into the future.

The ‘Sunlit Solar’ team got me up on a village hall roof while MD Mike explained how the array of solar panels he and his team had installed work, meaning that for most of the year, the hall uses self-generated electricity and earns income by exporting power to the grid – rather than paying for heating and hot water bills.

In Westminster, I met the Prisons’ Minister to discuss the case of a man who has been locked up for 38 years, 22 years longer than his sentence, but hasn’t been released because he maintains he is innocent.

I’ve met the Minister for Social Security & Disability about problems with the Access to Work Scheme which supports those with a disability or health conditions to start or stay in work. I’ve also met Polly MillerPerkins, the first ever Armed Forces Commissioner.

In Parliament, I called for a debate about an extraordinary High Court decision which will allow building on flood plains, filed amendments to the Health Bill relating to the new ‘Single Patient Record’, and to following NICE 2021 guidelines which the NHS has implemented inconsistently, leading to a postcode lottery for ME patients.

In Committee, I voted for a minority report on the Courts & Tribunals Bill as I disagree with the Government’s plans to remove the centuries-old right to a Jury trial in many cases. I also spoke in the debate about Child Sexual Offender Data.

I’ve also asked Ministers questions about:

The building will have self-generated electricity for most of the year n Protecting agricultural land to ensure our food security into the future. n Speeding up free court transcripts for victims. n Contracting newly qualified dentists to work in the NHS for a period of at least three years. n The lack of funds for the Music and Dance Scheme which benefits young people from less privileged backgrounds. n Priddy Folk Festival’s supply of water from Bristol Water and its contractor, Aquam. n Repayments of overpaid tax from HMRC which can’t be cashed as they’re in the wrong name. n Quashing convictions for victims of child sex abuse who have been coerced into criminal activity. n The use of shell companies and flags to disguise Russian shadow fleet activities and evade sanctions. n Introducing a ‘right to be forgotten’ to ensure that children’s data footprints are destroyed on request. n A local company waiting months to be paid for defence and security work relating to submarine disposal. n The lack of a special ‘rural’ mileage allowance for mobility vehicle users who travel great distances to access health and care facilities in rural areas.

Major financial boost to skatepark project

THE WELLS SKATEPARK Project has received a major boost after Wells City Council committed a further £85,000 towards the construction of a new skatepark for the city.

The latest commitment brings the Council’s total contribution to £100,000, making it the project’s single largest supporter to date.

The project has also been boosted by a £35,000 pledge from a local charitable trust, taking the total raised and pledged through grants, sponsorship, Section 106 contributions, community fundraising and donations to more than £362,000.

The volunteer-led project will replace the city’s ageing and deteriorating skatepark with a modern, high-quality, inclusive concrete facility designed for skateboarders, scooter riders, BMX riders, roller skaters and wheelchair riders of all ages and abilities, which will last for decades to come.

The Wells Skatepark Community Group has thanked Wells City Council for its continued commitment and recognition of the long-term benefits the new facility will bring to young people, families and the wider community.

Councillor Theo Butt Philip, who proposed the motion that Wells City Council increase its funding, said: “As the role Wells City Council plays in the city continues to grow, we are developing proposals for the delivery of improved play and leisure facilities for the whole community. Investing in the skatepark represents a major step forward in this work. “ The Council has long supported the dream of bringing a high-quality skatepark to the

The project has been developed and driven entirely by volunteers and has attracted support from charitable trusts, grant funders, schools, community organisations, more than 35 local businesses and hundreds of individual supporters

from across Wells, Street, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet and the surrounding villages.

Young people have also played an active role in fundraising.

Initiatives such as Beads for Boards, where two local skaters are selling handmade bracelets to raise money for the skatepark, and nine-year-old entrepreneur Ewan, who is selling his Braincase-branded skateboards, demonstrate the enthusiasm and commitment the project has inspired across all generations.

James Glendinning, Trustee, added: “What’s been most inspiring has been seeing so many people come together behind this project. Together we’ve shown what a community can achieve when it comes together behind a shared vision.

“We now need one final push to raise the remaining £140,000.

If more local businesses, schools, community groups and individuals can get behind the project over the coming months, we have a real opportunity to

deliver the skatepark Wells has been waiting for.”

The next few months represent a crucial opportunity for the community to help get the project over the finish line.

With the land secured, the design complete and specialist contractors ready to begin, raising the remaining £140,000 within the current fundraising window will allow the skatepark to be delivered as planned before construction costs are reviewed.

It’s now very much an ‘all hands on deck’ moment, and we’d love local businesses, community groups and residents to help us make it happen.

New Wells group for the over-50s A NEW social group for the over 50s has been set up in Wells.

Wells Culture Vultures plan to meet up on the first Tuesday of each month, plus occasional Sundays.

The group is run by a small team of two, but they’ve already got some interesting trips planned.

On the 1st of August they’re heading to Chalice Well in

Glastonbury, and future expeditions include galleries, concerts, museums, the cinema and The Bishop’s Palace.

It’s completely free to join and you will often get discounted entry to attractions.

Wells company shortlisted for careers award A SMALL family garden business from Wells found itself in rather extraordinary company this week after being shortlisted for a Somerset Careers Award alongside Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and Thales UWS & Co. Eden Ponds & Landscaping, co-owned by husband and wife team Ryan and Skye Wynn, was named as a finalist in the Imagine the Possibilities: Supported Employment Employer of the Year category at the Somerset Careers Awards 2026 due to having an intern in partnership with Discovery, a charity which supports people with learning disabilities.

For the Wells couple, the evening was a huge honour, a real encouragement and, in the best possible way, slightly surreal.

“One finalist saves lives every day across Somerset, one helps our latest navy submarines find their way around the world, and we occasionally rescue frogs and pet fish, or put fences back up after storms. It is all important work in its own way, although we are less useful in emergencies – unless you are a frog!”

He added: “It was like turning up to the Wells Moat Boat Race with a carefully built barrel raft, then discovering one team had brought a submarine, and the NHS had brought an entire rowing department.”

Thales went on to win.

“They were excellent and absolutely deserved it,” Ryan said.

“We lost to a multi-million pound

international company, which outmanned us at about 500:1, but genuinely, it was inspiring to be there. We came home gratand rather amazed that our little Wells garden business had been recognised alongside organisations of that size and merit.”

For Ryan and Skye, the real reward was the reason they were nominated in the first place.

“The heart of it is that we got to train and encourage a lovely chap with additional needs as he works towards his dream job,” Ryan said.

“Watching someone grow in confidence, learn skills and begin to see what they are capable of is a lovely thing to be part of.”

Ryan and Skye say the same values shape the way they run Eden Ponds & Landscaping.

“We are a small family business and we like doing things properly,” Ryan said. “We want to make lovely gardens, build things that last, be easy to have around and treat people with kindness and patience. Whether it is a pond, waterfall, fence repair or a tired bit of garden that needs

Eden Ponds & Landscaping works across Wells and the surrounding area, maintaining gardens, creating ponds and waterfalls, carrying out fencing and garden repairs for local homeowners.

Notes from a wildlife garden We are now into our third heatwave of the summer and, although the cloudless blue skies are glorious, gardening has become something of an early morning or late evening pursuit. The middle of the day is simply too hot for anything too strenuous, leaving me to observe rather than intervene. Observation, though, often brings its own rewards.

A raised bed of seedlings I was convinced would be Cosmos ‘Purity’ has spent weeks keeping me guessing. When the flowers finally opened, they weren’t cosmos at all, but Nigella. It was a lovely surprise and a timely reminder that gardens don’t always follow our plans.

The roses continue to be magnificent, filling the borders with

colour and scent, but this month one plant has dominated my thoughts more than any other: bindweed.

I’ve never known it grow with such enthusiasm. No sooner have I teased out a root with my hori hori knife than another shoot appears elsewhere. I’ve discovered I have both the familiar white bindweed and a delicate pink form. They are undeniably beautiful, which makes removing them feel oddly conflicted.

The bamboo has also been racing skywards. Some mornings it genuinely feels as though it has grown several inches overnight.

Combined with fierce winds, soaring temperatures and the endless task of watering, the garden is now beginning to look a little sun-kissed around the edges.

During hot weather, my priority shifts to the wildlife. Shallow dishes of fresh water appear throughout the garden for birds, hedgehogs and any passing visitor needing a drink.

Tomorrow’s task is another determined assault on the bindweed. I may even experiment with turning it into a homemade liquid feed, although I’m told it has to become spectacularly smelly before it’s ready.

Even after weeks of heat and stubborn weeds, I wouldn’t swap my garden for anywhere else.

n NEWS Campaigners lose battle to reopen pub Wells loses THE EAST WELLS Community Benefit Society (EWCBS) is refunding all money contributed towards the project to purchase and reopen the Britannia Inn on Bath Road.

This decision was taken by the Management Committee in the light of the ruling by the Planning Inspectorate, received on Friday, 10th July, to accept the appeal of the Wellington Pub Company and permit the development of five new houses on the site. This was contrary to the recommendations from Somerset Council and Wells City Council that a community pub should be retained.

The Management Committee of the EWCBS met on Tuesday, 14th July and felt unanimously that this was the only option open to them, although the owners should be approached one final time to see if any compromise could be reached – regrettably no reply was forthcoming.

The battle to purchase and reopen The Britannia Inn is sadly over and organisations who have supported the project. However, it would particularly like to thank Wells City Council and Somerset Council, who supported the project by granting the pub Community Asset status, and who consistently sought to preserve The Britannia Inn as an asset for

future generations of the Wells community.

Above all, the EWCBS would like to thank all its shareholders and donors for their generosity, and the people of Wells and further afield who supported its events or had volunteered to help in other ways.

WELLS HAS MISSED out on a place on the shortlist to become UK Town of Culture in 2028.

The city was one of around 400 places to apply for the title, which is modelled on the UK City of Culture competition, but failed to make the final 15.

Eight other Somerset locations, including Glastonbury, Frome, Bruton and Shepton Mallet, were also unsuccessful.

Giles Adams, from the Visit Somerset Tourism Board, said he was disappointed that no South West towns had been shortlisted.

He said: “It’s frustrating.

With respect to those towns selected, I don’t want to appear sour, but it does strike me that there is a focus on the North and the South West misses out.”

The 15 shortlisted towns will each receive £60,000 to develop a full bid, with the eventual winner receiving £3 million to stage cultural events.

It opens with a weekend packed with best-selling novelists, historical insights and political discourse, before ending nine days later in a blaze of stars with a space scientist inspired by The Clangers.

Friday’s opening night features novelist Patrick Gale with his searing story of escape and the power of love, Love Lane, followed by journalist Stephen Sackur, who issues a rallying cry in Hard Truths for journalists to hold the powerful to account.

Saturday sees Martin Sixsmith, with his son Daniel, delivering a chilling analysis in Despots of the parallels between Trump’s America and Putin’s Russia.

Super reader Dylan’s amazing feat ON THE 9th of July all of us at St Cuthbert’s Juniors celebrated Dylan’s incredible achievement of reading well over three million words. We are still piecing together the information to confirm the exact total, but it is already a remarkable accomplishment.

Dylan’s love of reading is clear for all to see. Reaching this milestone has taken dedication, perseverance and a genuine enjoyment of books. Along the way, he has broadened his vocabulary, expanded his knowledge and experienced countless adventures through the pages he has read.

When we told the CEO of the Wessex Learning Trust about Dylan’s achievement, he was so impressed that he agreed to sign the certificate personally. It was fitting that the certificate was presented by the librarian, who also spoke about this summer’s Reading Challenge.

Most importantly, Dylan has discovered the joy of reading.

Three million words is an incredible achievement, but the lifelong habit of reading is an even greater one.

How you can help the Jazz & Blues Festival THE WELLS JAZZ & BLUES FESTIVAL is officially returning for its annual weekend from September 25th to 27th.

This year the festival is bringing 37 groups to four local venues: The White Hart, The Swan Hotel, Blossom’s and The Rose and Crown.

Expect the return of favourites like Tom Toomey, The Portway Blues Band, and The Jury, alongside newcomers like The Fabulous Red Diesel, Dedication Organ Quartet and Second Hand Sounds.

Best of all, every performance is completely free to attend.

Keeping the festival free is a core pillar for festival founder Niamh McGrogan, but it comes with a major catch.

“We don’t believe that live music should always be behind a paywall, but we also firmly believe that musicians should be fairly paid for their time and talent,” Niamh explained. “Because of these twin principles we have to raise over £10,000 in alternative ways to make the festival happen.

“As a strictly non-profit community group, every penny goes directly into the music.”

Niamh, alongside local resident co-organisers Peter Thompson and Jenny Jeffreys, has been working tirelessly to hit that target. Thanks to various funding approaches – including venue contributions, a successful fashion show at the Swan Hotel courtesy of local clothing boutique Runway, and minor successes

from grant funding – they have secured just over £5,400 so far.

However, they still have a £4,500 funding gap to close before September. Alongside presenting at the next Wells SOUP, they are looking for donations and sponsors, turning to the Wells community to help cross the finish line.

Stories from the Museum In one of the upper galleries of the Wells & Mendip Museum there is a beautiful double-gourd vase in pure white porcelain, slightly damaged and decorated with the image of an ancient Chinese calligrapher, Wang Xizhi.

How it came to be here is almost incredible.

In about 1680, China started trading with the West. The main export was tea, which was soon very fashionable in England. But tea is light, so the ships carrying it needed extra weight.

The Chinese, alone, had known for centuries how to make fine white porcelain, and a supply was readily available, so it was packed into baskets and used as ballast for the ships.

When the ships were unloaded, the porcelain – then a rare and expensive curiosity – was sold. This vase must have been one of the earliest items. Somehow it came to Wells.

In 1816, the leaseholder of the old Chancellor’s House on Cathedral Green, Edward Spencer, was declared bankrupt after some unfortunate business ventures. The lease and all the house contents were sold by auction at the Mitre Inn in Sadler Street. The buyer was a wealthy and ambitious local lawyer, Joseph Lovell.

He sent in the builders to remodel the property to his modern taste. We do not know exactly what happened, except that

the ancient house was transformed into the stucco-fronted villa that we see today. But in 1997, in preparation for building a new museum store, excavation was started in the garden.

The digging revealed a buried cellar filled with hundreds of discarded items – many broken – including this vase and more than 100 other pieces of finest quality Chinese porcelain.

Many have been painstakingly reassembled.

What is incredible is this: A museum collects and exhibits valuable objects. When they are found there is always a problem of ownership – who should pay, which museum should they go to, etc.

Not here! They were found in

the Museum garden! You couldn’t make it up!

The Sikhs drew a big crowd when they paraded through Wells on a previous visit

Popular event returning to Wells THE ROTARY CLUB of Wells is delighted to announce the return of Meet the Sikhs, a wonderful, free, intercultural and entertaining event.

The Meet the Sikhs event began back in 2014, with the terrible floods on the Levels and the Rotary Club’s work with the international disaster relief charity, Khalsa Aid. This partnership continued for many years, with our two organisations working in disaster areas all around the world, from flooding in Kerala, India to hurricane relief in the Caribbean.

The Sikhs are happy to supply and tie turbans on anyone who wants one on the day. When we first held the event on the Bishop’s Green, Bishop Peter got one and brought the fabric back the second year to have it re-tied.

The Meet the Sikhs event also includes Bhangra Drumming and dancing (and the ability to learn both), freshly cooked food, and information about what they do as a charity.

Young Persons Project Heads Up has teamed up with Young Somerset to launch a new youth group for 13–17-yearolds this summer. The group will offer a safe, inclusive space for young people to build confidence, learn new skills and make friends through youth-led activities.

Partial eclipse marks sundown MEMBERS of the public are invited to the Cathedral Green on the evening of Wednesday, 12th August to observe a partial sunset eclipse of the Sun alongside the Wells & Mendip Astronomers.

Experienced astronomers will be on hand with specially filtered telescopes, eclipse glasses and expert guidance to help visitors of all ages safely enjoy this neartotal eclipse.

At its peak at 7.10pm, the Moon will cover 94 per cent of the Sun’s disc, making it one of the deepest partial eclipses visible from the UK in decades. Shadows may appear strange and softened, temperatures may fall slightly, and the landscape could take on an eerie silvery tone.

Wells writer inspired by his parents’ story THE FACE on the cover of Geoff Spinks’ latest novel is not that of an actor or model, it is his own father, whose wartime experiences inspired the story.

In The CPO and the Wren, the Wells author draws on the lives of his parents, whose experiences during the Second World War shaped the novel. While his father served as a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy, his mother’s wartime role was far more difficult to uncover because of the secrecy surrounding her work.

“Researching my father’s story was relatively straightforward because I could ask him about his experiences,” Geoff said. “My mother’s story was more difficult because so much of what she did was covered by wartime secrecy.”

The novel is rooted in real events, but Geoff hopes it also captures what life was like for thousands of ordinary young people whose lives were transformed by war.

“I wanted to bring readers back to what it would have been like at that time,” he said.

Although writing has become a major part of his retirement, Geoff’s career followed a very different path. He originally hoped to become a journalist before studying dairy technology at the University of Glasgow.

After retiring to Wells, Geoff found himself returning to his first ambition. “When we came back, the journalism bug came back too,” he said.

Years spent producing technical reports gave him the discipline to write books, and The CPO and the Wren combines meticulous historical research with family memories to tell a story inspired by the courage, sacrifice and resilience of the wartime generation.

Wells Pride in full colour WELLS PRIDE will be taking place this year on Saturday, 8th August. The parade will first assemble on Cathedral Green at 12pm and then start on Sadler Street at 12.15pm.

Charity fundraiser at Palace Farm ON SUNDAY the 30th of August, Palace Farm in Wells are hosting a fundraiser for the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance.

Party at Palace Farm will feature live music, DJs, children’s entertainment, a hog roast and a complimentary drink on arrival.

THE WELLS Railway Fraternity will once again be holding its annual Railwells show in the Town Hall on the 8th-9th of August. The Wells Railway Fraternity began in 1968, and this is now its 48th show in Wells.

The weekend event is a mixture of model railway layouts, traders and demonstrations. In total there will be 13 layouts to enjoy, 15 traders – where you can purchase everything from books to models and tools – and nine demonstrations offering expert advice on soldering, modelling and much more.

The show is open from 10.30am – 5pm (4pm on Sunday), and you can find out more about the event at www.railwells.com.

The Air Ambulance relies entirely on public donations to continue providing lifesaving care to those who need it.

Our members tried a taster session of golf croquet on the Palace Lawn and found it to be lots of fun. It was a well-organised experience, and the trainers were both friendly and patient.

The cinema club’s recent watch was Les Liaisons Dangereuses live from the National Theatre, based on the novel by Pierre de Lacios.

Set among the glittering salons of the French super-rich in the 18th century, patriarchy equals power, reputation is everything and, for women, one misstep can mean ruin. Marquise de Merteuil, played

by Lesley Manville, is a master in the art of survival, and wields her influence with intelligence and control alongside the magnetic Vicomte de Valmont, played by Aidan Turner.

Many of us were entertained at St. Cuthbert’s Church with a production of Pirates of Penzance

by Opera in a Box, an exciting opera company based in the South West dedicated to making opera accessible and engaging for all.

Our Art Appreciation group checked out The Hilliard Society of Miniaturists’ recent exhibition at the Town Hall. The society’s goal has always been to promote miniaturist art in the West Country. They also visited the Shepton Artists’ exhibition held in our museum.

Our Book Club’s latest read was Still Alice by Lisa Genova, a neuroscientist and author. It’s about a woman dealing with Alzheimer’s disease.

Sadly, both our walking and strolling groups had to curtail their wanderings due to the extreme heat. They look forward to getting out on the trails as soon as the weather becomes cooler.

WELLS FLORAL ART CLUB On Saturday, 27th June, Wells Floral Art Club was delighted to welcome club members and guests to their annual Charity Cream Tea in aid of Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, with a floral demonstration by the award-winning Angie Blackwell of Cottage Gardens, Ilminster.

Six arrangements were created, all with enormous flair and

Wells Floral Art Club expertise. Angie is a great believer in texture and colour which, with her wealth of tips and ideas, kept everyone enthralled.

The first was a hand tie of greenery, flowers, grasses and eryngium. Two spectacular annabelle hydrangea blooms completed this spiral, stemmed bouquet.

For the second design, Angie created a long-lasting woodland piece – perfect for home or as a graveside tribute. It comprised of a small upright log fixed to a natural wood slice and wrapped in hessian ribbon, with a little bird bath nestled in the top. Sprigs of silk flowers were glued to the ribbon, and for a final touch, Angie added stock, grasses and a few heuchera leaves.

Angie’s third arrangement featured a striking single-coloured palette of blue set in an upcycled bowl. Angie used Oasis to steady tall larkspur and shapely veronica.

For contrast, Angie framed the base with a collar of heuchera leaves before tucking in some purple platycodon.

The fourth arrangement was a vibrant vision in peach and red! It was beautifully styled in a striped Tesco pot with a plastic liner! The container was filled with santini crysanthemums and spray carnations, all offset by rich copper beach foliage.

Angie’s next demonstration proved her excellent design skills were second to none. She cleverly reused another Tesco tin, disguising it with bark pieces. The container, filled with plastic-coated chicken wire, was then filled with a stunning mix of flowers and greenery, which included jasmine, senecio, lupins,

francoa, roses, carnations and home-grown sweet peas.

The final arrangement was sensational, showing off a £6 bunch of Tesco sunflowers. Angie used another ‘might be useful’ vase, which perfectly complemented a stunning display of tall grasses, jasmine and rusty red Dock. The sunflowers were added, followed by wired fatsia leaves which created a bold, dramatic collar around the base.

Angie clearly captivated the audience, leaving everyone eager and inspired to capture her creative magic.

Chairman, Sylvia Ingham, thanked Angie and said how thrilled and delighted we were to see her again.

WELLS U3A Wells u3a chose one of the hottest days of the year for a coach trip to Berkeley Castle. 25 members travelled north to the castle, between Bristol and Gloucester, in air-conditioned comfort, and had a guided tour round the labyrinth of rooms there.

The castle has been inhabited by the Berkeley family for 900 years, and in its time has hosted Henry Vlll, Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth l. Edward ll was confined to its deep dungeon, where he was gruesomely murdered.

Shakespeare wrote A Midsummer Night’s Dream for a Berkeley family wedding, and the castle has provided locations for TV productions of Wolf Hall and Poldark.

Sun hats and parasols gave some protection in the sweltering heat of the beautiful gardens, and an interesting feature of the grounds is the house of Dr Edward

Jenner, famous for creating the smallpox vaccine. He developed it in 1796 when he noticed that dairymaids seemed immune to smallpox after contracting the much milder disease of cowpox.

He took pus from a dairymaid’s cowpox lesion and inoculated it into an eight-year-old boy. The boy recovered from cowpox, and when Jenner exposed him to smallpox multiple times, he did not fall ill. Jenner became known as the ‘father of immunology’, and his groundbreaking work laid the foundation for global disease eradication.

Plans are now afoot for an October coach trip to Dartmouth, which will include a boat trip along the River Dart to Totnes.

The July u3a monthly talk at Wells Museum featured an artist very well known in Wells, whose giant murals have been installed on walls all over the country.

Philippa Threlfall, a keen member and supporter of u3a for many years, showed pictures of her murals, often commissioned by banks, building societies and large corporations. Her largest work in Wells is her medieval map of the city on the side of the Tesco store.

A fuller account of her talk will feature in a future edition of the Wells Voice.

WELLS TUESDAY WI At our July meeting, the inspirational Ursula Franklin talked to us about Mission Penguin.

Following the loss of her husband, Ursula decided there were two things which would help with the healing process: the first was to keep busy, the second to have a goal. Enter Mission Penguin, a task to photograph all 18 species of penguin in their natural habitat, often in remote places including the Galápagos Islands, The Falklands, New Zealand and the tiny island of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean. This month we are about to host the County Quiz for our local WI groups and we have launched the Contemporary Art installation for the cathedral. Lots of lovely inventive crafting to come alongside the project.

Once again we have been out and about, and we’re keeping fingers crossed that the weather is fine for our annual family BBQ. Some members managed the trial croquet session on the cathedral croquet lawn for an introductory session – group two is anxiously watching the weather.

There are lots of sporty things on the agenda and a photoshoot this month for WI Life magazine featuring a few of our sporting subgroups. Great fun despite the heat. We’re looking forward to seeing the results and reading the interview in the next edition.

WELLS CIVIC SOCIETY Members of Wells Civic Society recently enjoyed a bespoke tour of the new Roman Gallery at Wells Museum. Paul Wiltshire, one of the museum trustees, lead the tour with information about the finds and insights into the Roman occupation in the area 2,000 years ago. The collection ranges from lead ‘pigs’ to shoes, pots and coins.

The Civic Society will reconvene after the summer break on Wednesday, 7th October at 7pm at the museum. All welcome; guests £5 please.

ST. THOMAS WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP We had a very interesting evening on Wednesday, 1st July when Ruth and Ian Ames-White came along to update us on the progress of their mosaic depicting the history of Wells with events and people of note.

The mosaic itself is finished and they are now working on a suitable place for it to be laid so that both residents and visitors can see it and learn more about our wonderful city. It is a project that has taken over their lives, with the first five years being devoted to research into both content and the materials necessary for longevity in the open air and being walked over so that people can appreciate it in detail. It is truly a masterpiece of fine art which will be an attraction for many, many years.

Our next meeting will be held at The Bishop’s Palace tea room where members will enjoy a cream tea. Then we return to the Church

WELLS AND DISTRICT WILDLIFE GROUP During the recent hot weather you may have seen birds, such as blackbirds and robins ‘sunbathing’.

The birds find a sheltered spot, spread their wings and fan out their tails to expose their plumage to the sun. This behaviour helps to remove parasites.

Obviously, after a sunbathe birds may seek a bath or a drink.

We can help wildlife by keeping ponds topped up or putting out dishes of water. Water in dishes should be changed daily and the dish thoroughly cleaned. Evening visitors looking for a drink may include hedgehogs, which find hot dry weather tough, and foxes.

The recent weather has been very good for butterflies, especially if areas of long grass have been left to encourage them to breed. The hot, still nights are a good time to look out for bats, which will spend the night catching up to 3,000 insects.

You don’t need to put out bird food until the end of October, as this will reduce the risk of the spread of disease among birds. We can help by leaving a few untidy areas in our gardens which are a source of natural food.

Our Glow worm evening on 6th August is fully booked, but we are having a Bats in the Palace meeting

on Tuesday, 25th August. This will be an evening walk (7.45pm – 9.15pm) around the Bishop’s Palace gardens led by ecologist Dr. Matt Booker.

We will use detectors to listen to the bats as they feed on insects in the grounds and to identify what species they are. If you have your own detector, please bring it along.

WELLS MEN’S BREAKFAST Members of Wells Men’s Breakfast enjoyed a fascinating journey to the other side of the world on the 4th of July, when Richard WynnJones spoke about the remarkable story of the Welsh settlement in Patagonia.

Richard recounted his visit to Patagonia with his wife where they met descendants of the original Welsh settlers who emigrated to Argentina in 1865 in search of a place where they could preserve their language, culture and traditions. He illustrated his talk with photographs and personal memories from their visit, bringing to life the communities that continue to thrive there today.

One of the themes running through the presentation was the Welsh word hiraeth – a term that has no direct English equivalent, expressing a deep longing or yearning for one’s homeland and heritage. Richard explained how this feeling of yr hiraeth is still evident among many Patagonian Welsh descendants, despite

Welsh remains very much alive in Patagonia, where it is still taught in schools with support from the Welsh Government, including teacher exchange programmes.

Richard also shared stories passed down from one of the early settlers, Evans, as recounted by his elderly granddaughter whom they met during their travels.

The talk was enlivened with snippets of the Welsh language and stirring recordings of Welsh male voice choirs, creating a real sense of Wales in a distant land. It was a captivating and memorable morning that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone present.

WELLS & DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB A cautionary tale. In June 1919 in Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, Mabel Greenwood baked a gooseberry tart for her solicitor husband and the children. A few hours later she was dead. Her husband tried to blame the gooseberries but suspicion fell on him. It was alleged that he had toddled up the path to the garden shed and had been lacing her drinks with a herbicide marketed under the name of Eureka – a sodium arsenite compound which exterminated everything it touched, including superfluous family members. Since then a whole regiment of lethal chemicals have lurked up on that dusty shelf, such as DDT, 2,4-D, paraquat, Roundup and glyphosate.

Admittedly, there are very few gardeners who squirt their spouses on a regular basis, but one area of alarming concern applies to flea control on pets.

The usual ingredients of these

types of pesticides are fipronil, which is highly toxic to humans, and imidacloprid, which is a prescription-only medicine. The trouble is that once the pooch has been well and truly doused, Rover then romps around on the carpet or with the kiddies, leaving significant traces on hands, feet and faces.

And it does not stop within the house. Dogs love to splosh around in the local streams, ponds and the seaside. There are 22 million dogs and cats in the UK, and the consequential contamination is somewhat alarming when one considers that in 2023 27 tonnes of fipronil and 33 tonnes of imidacloprid were sold in the UK. Just because we do not see the danger, it does not mean that it does not exist.

If that was not depressing enough, Sir Edward Marshall Hall – the celebrated barrister – represented Harold Greenwood, who was acquitted of his wife’s murder and married his second wife a few months later, changed his name, relocated and died in 1929.

On a more cheerful note, there is still much of the summer left to enjoy. Someone once remarked that the most beautiful words in the English language are ‘summer afternoons’. This year though it has been a challenge to find a cooling corner in the shade, leaving many of us floundering like stranded whales panting on the beach. Cooling corners will return and even the plants may get a second wind. Which brings us through August to September, a month with the potential of spectacular colour.

On Sunday, 20th September, Wells Gardening Club will be visiting the superlative gardens of

Llanover House near Abergavenny.

Covering 15 acres, the gardens comprise rills, cascades and ponds to savour, vistas of the Back Mountains and Brecon Beacons and herbaceous borders in their prime – a feast to satisfy all the senses.

And if that is not enough, our visit coincides with the Rare Plants Fair. The cost is £35 and nonmembers are very welcome to join us. We depart at 9.15am and return around 4.30pm.

WOOKEY HOLE WI Due to house moves and the ill health of some of our ladies, we

find that we have vacancies at Wookey Hole WI. Although we regularly meet in the Bistro at the Wookey Hole Hotel, the majority of our members live in Wells.

Unlike most WIs, we meet in the afternoon so there is no night driving involved.

There is parking right outside the hotel and a ramp for anyone who finds steps difficult, and we also have drivers who are happy to give lifts to others.

A warm welcome awaits anyone who comes along, as well as interesting speakers at every meeting, and refreshments.

If you would like to make some new friends then please do come along and meet us. We have a garden party on Monday, 10th August at 2.30pm, and next summer we will be celebrating our 80th Birthday.

Our September meeting is on Monday, 7th September at 2pm and an interesting speaker has already been booked.

Darts league looking for teams for its winter season DARTS

THE WELLS and District Darts League are looking for new teams, or any players from the local pubs and clubs in the area who might be interested in bringing some new teams to the league in preparation for the winter season.

The Darts league is open to any licensed premises within a 10-mile radius of Wells, and matches take place on Tuesday nights every week.

The Darts League Chairman, Damian Selway-Barry, said: “We are a friendly league which has a core number of teams who play in winter and summer seasons.

Brutal weather does not stop play for championship GOLF – MENDIP GOLF CLUB THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP at Mendip Golf Club was played in what can only be described as brutal weather conditions. Not only was it hot and sunny, but a very strong and rare summer wind from the north/northeast direction, baking the course in true links style. Hard running

fairways and fast greens made for tough scoring conditions.

Special mention must go to eventual Men’s Club Champion, Dan Owen, whose brilliant first round of one under par 70 formed the foundation of his victory.

Despite a tougher day on Sunday, Dan held on to win by four strokes from Ryan Sainsbury.

The Men’s Nett Championship

for the Frost Cup was a tightly fought contest, with Stephen Coats winning on countback from Colin Davies, on a score of 143.

12-year-old Harper Howerd experienced two very different days in the Ladies’ Club Championship, with a really hard first round but coming back with a fabulous level par back nine holes on Sunday for a fabulous nett 64. Resilience at its best!

Aimee Sawyer retained her Ladies’ Club Championship with a score of 155 over the weekend before travelling up to Delamere Forest to attempt to qualify for the AIG Women’s Open. Good luck, Aimee.

The Ladies’ nett Championship went to Julie Doyle whose two round total of 146, four under par, was a fantastic score in the testing conditions. This was Julie’s first ever individual Club competition victory so many congratulations and what an event to do it in!

With grateful thanks to the Greens team for presenting the course in fabulous condition, the F&B team for keeping everyone hydrated over the weekend, the H&C committee for all the work behind the scenes and to the Pro Shop team for all the scoring. A true team effort from everyone at Mendip Golf Club.

Wells men compete in World Hyrox Championships HYROX TWO LOCAL MEN from Wells qualified to compete in the Male Doubles V60 to 64 age group at the World Hyrox Championships in Sweden last weekend.

Jon James (62) and Nick Stevens (63) crossed the finish line in second place, pushing the current world champions and world record holders from the USA very close, only to then incur two 15-second time penalties to eventually be placed fifth.

There were mixed emotions about the fifth-place finish – happy to achieve that in only their second Hyrox event, despite the time penalties incurred, but frustratingly they were only one second off third place and a podium finish.

Hyrox is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It is a combination of eight gym strength and endurance stations, including a sled push (154kgs), sled pull, 200 metres Farmers’ Carry (48kgs), 100 metres of lunges

(carrying 20kg bag), 80 metres of burpees, 1,000 metres each of rowing and ski erg, interspersed after each station with eight laps of a 1km running track (five miles in total). It is then completed with an extremely difficult station

Nick and Jon decided to start Hyrox classes less than one year ago as a way of building strength and injury resilience. They are trained by Joe Tulley from JT Fit Training Club in Cathedral Park, which is an official Hyroxaffiliated training facility.

Joe said: “I could not believe how fast these guys could run, but I knew we’d need to develop an intense strength training programme to get them strong enough to deal with the heavy weights on the gym stations.”

Jon and Nick qualified for the World championships by achieving a podium finish at the Cardiff Hyrox event earlier this year.

“It was an honour to compete in Sweden,” said Nick, “against the fittest men in the world at our age group. I would recommend Hyrox to anyone wanting to gain fitness and strength – whatever their age!”

Seniors Championship Mike Metcalfe won the Cole Cup, securing the Wells Golf Club Seniors Gross Championship on the 7th and 9th of July for the eighth time with rounds of 75 and 77. David Woodbury was second with rounds of 82 and 78. The very consistent Paul Lewer was third with 80 and 83.

The Dalby Cup for best nett was won by David Woodbury with two very steady rounds below handicap (69 and 65). Mike Metcalfe and Paul Lewer were second and third with Steve Clark in fourth with nett 142 (70 and 72). Richard Mansfield was fifth with 72 and 71. Darren Wilkins and Tony Harrison took sixth and seventh with nett 144.

4BBB Open What a sizzling day for the Wells Golf Club 4BBB Open on the 11th of July. A hot day, but thankfully there was also a gentle breeze from the east.

The heat did not stop players getting great scores. The leading score and best Home team was 47 points by David Woodbury and Ian Jones. David has had a cracking week, also winning the Dalby Cup for the best nett score in the Seniors Championship.

Simon Jackson and Robert Coate were second Home team with 46 points, Paul Hancock and Arron Wickham were third with 45 points and John and Joseph Harvey came fourth with 44 points.

The leading visitor’s team was Karen and Robert Preedy from the Isle of Wedmore Golf Club, with 45 points. Michael Lindop and Neil Stephens from West Wilts Golf Club were second with 42 points, and third were Alex Fry

Well done to our ladies’ team, Philippa Gowen and Tina Keers, who had an excellent 43 points but were sadly not in the prizes.

Cowern Trophy It was another hot but very windy day when a small field of six pairs played for the Cowern Trophy on Sunday, 12th July. A mixed foursomes medal competition is not an easy format

to play, and is made harder with a draw for partners.

Dave Baker (staff) had a textbook hole-in-one on the seventh. The ball landed on the green, hit the flag and then must have dropped straight down into the hole – the last place he was thinking of looking!

Dave and his partner, Erica Klim, went on to win the trophy with a nett 68. Mike Metcalfe and Julie Hill were second place with a nett 76.

Club gets ever closer to their new clubhouse TENNIS IT’S BEEN another busy month at Wells Tennis Club. Junior tennis players had the opportunity to play in an Under-12s LTA tournament organised by Anna Hay. Players came from Somerset and Avon to develop their match play. Congratulations go to Harley, Ethan and Arthur, who participated from Wells.

For league players, July sees the end of the summer season.

The weather has definitely played its part this year, alongside injuries. A special mention to the Ladies’ C team who narrowly missed out on promotion. Well done to all players this year. It has been great to see lots of new members trying their hand at match play.

When not on court, many of us having been following Wimbledon and Fery’s fabulous tournament run. On Sunday the spirit of the club was in full display at our Wimbledon social – thanks for organising it, Juliet!

Finally, the committee and fundraising team continue to work tirelessly in the background to raise funds for the clubhouse, and Churchill Living have joined our court sponsors (thank you). There is only one court remaining. Any businesses looking to increase their local advertising please do get in touch. We have now raised over £100,000! Amazing work.

Finally, the site has also grown thanks to the land donation by Wells Football Club. We now have more room for our clubhouse!
