Increase in recycling in new waste scheme WELLS will be one of the first places in Somerset to make the switch to a new waste collection scheme in late October.

As the name of the Recycle More scheme suggests, more will be recycled each week, leaving less to be picked up from bins – which will be emptied every three weeks instead of every two.

Every home in and around Wells will be sent two Recycle More leaflets by Somerset Waste Partnership in the next two months: one six weeks ahead of the changes, the next three weeks in advance, complete with a collections calendar. There will also be a Bright Blue Bag – tough, reusable, base-weighted, and with a Velcro closure – delivered to take most of the new materials being collected.

In King Charles II’s footsteps KEEN walker Donna Paul has followed in the footsteps of King Charles II by retracing part of the journey he made in 1651 as he fled from Roundhead forces.

Donna is one of more than 90 walkers who are retracing the steps of the fleeing king in an epic 615-mile relay. She walked the 15-mile leg from Wells to Castle Cary on August 15, setting off from Wells Cathedral at 9.45am and arriving at the ‘pepper pot’ lock up in Castle Cary six hours later.

Accompanying her for at least some of the way were Samantha Davey and Sarah Harris, who had walked the previous leg from Compton Martin to Wells, Liz Brooks, Charlotte Nevitt and Vicky Toghill.

“Sarah, Sam, Liz and Charlotte walked with us till about five miles,” said Donna.

“Me and Vicky got very wet but got to Castle Cary at 4-ish.”

Donna is the receptionist at Bowleys Garage in Wells, where she has worked for more than ten years, and enjoys walking in her spare time. She saw details of The Monarch’s Way relay on a Facebook walking group and thought it would be nice to do the local section.

“Liz and I walk together and have signed up to do the Gower Mighty Hike for Macmillan next July, and me and Charlotte walked a lot together through lockdown when I was on furlough,” said Donna.

“We are so lucky living here

Summer afternoon jazz concert A FREE socially distanced concert will bring jazz to Wells Market Place on August Bank Holiday Monday.

It is being organised by local saxophonist Paul Cannon with support from Wells Independents and the Wells Coronavirus Network.

The music will be cool and suitable for a summer afternoon with the concert running from 2pm-4pm in front of the Town Hall.

“Lockdown has hit lovers of live music and musicians very hard,” said Paul. “For a while

they were unable to rehearse together let alone perform in public.

“We are very grateful to Wells Independents and the Coranavirus Network volunteers for safely bringing live music back to Wells for the first time in nearly six months.

“The new, car-free Market Place with cafe seating now spreading outside is a perfect venue for summer events. I very much hope to organise a whole series of suitable live music sessions there as things ease up next year.”

Charles went on the run after his Royalist troops were defeated

by Cromwell’s soldiers at the Battle of Worcester in September 1651.

Hot on his heels, and encouraged by the prospect of a £1,000 reward for his capture, his Parliamentarian pursuers drove him on a winding route from Worcester towards Wales, then through parts of Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Sussex.

He finally reached Shoreham in West Sussex after 42 days, and made his escape to France.

Today his route is closely followed by England’s longest inland footpath, The Monarch’s Way – and it is this trail that the walkers are following in their relay challenge, which began in Worcester on July 4. Organisers hope that the whole trail will be complete by late summer or early autumn.

Walk leaders for each section carry a baton which is handed over to the next walk leader. The baton is an image of Charles II, wrapped around a walker’s water bottle.

Bill and Betty Neale celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary

Couple raise glass to their long marriage

By Emma James BILL and Betty Neale of Wells have celebrated 70 years of marriage.

They met on the eve of Valentine’s Day when Bill, who was a member of the Shepton Mallet Army Cadets, came to Wells with a group of friends and was introduced to Betty. The pair married on August 7, 1950, at the church in Wookey Hole where Betty and her family lived at the time.

“It was an absolutely beautiful day,” remembers Betty.

When asked about the secret of such a long marriage, Bill’s recommendation is to “have a nice little argument at times – because it’s nice to make up”.

Betty believes their long union is due to sharing: “We’ve done everything together. Neither of us goes anywhere without the other. My husband has been very good to me.”

The celebrations were not quite as they had hoped because of the Covid-19 restrictions, however the couple held a party with neighbours in the garden, followed, a few days later, by a family gathering at The Britannia Inn in Wells. They were joined by brothers and sisters, their two daughters Janet and Julia,

Betty and Bill were married at the church in Wookey Hole four grandchildren and greatgranddaughter, Lola.

Janet praised her parents saying: “Mum and Dad are a very special couple who look out for one another and are both tolerant.”

This is quite a year for milestones in the Neale household. Betty’s 90th birthday fell only a few days after the platinum anniversary. When asked how she planned to mark the occasion, she replied: “I think I’m going out with the girls.”

Golden couple celebrate with family WELL known local couple Maurice and Josie Day celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the beginning of August.

Maurice, who is president of Wells Carnival, and Josie met at a Wookey Hole dance in 1967 while he was home on leave from the Merchant Navy, and married in St Thomas’ Church, Wells, on Saturday, August 1, 1970.

Having left the Merchant Navy, Maurice went on to work on the buses from the Wells depot while Josie at that time worked for Unigate.

To celebrate their 50 years of marriage they were due to have a party for 140 family and friends at Street Football Club, but this had to be postponed until a later date due to the coronavirus. Instead, they had a quiet celebration at home with their family.

Maurice has been on Wells carnival committee on and off for 50 years, and Josie is also a committee member.

“Carnival is a big thing in our family,” said Maurice.

“I am president of Wells carnival. Simon, the youngest son, is cart captain with the Masqueraders Carnival Club, and Jon has been with the Globe Carnival Club for many years.”

Maurice retired after a serious cancer illness, following which he started the Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group at Musgrove Park Hospital and

Date for new post office opening THE city’s new post office might be ready to open in the Wells Peacocks store on September 7.

Wells Post Office closed the doors of its Market Place operation on July 24 and Wells has been without a city centre post office ever since.

But the long-anticipated move to Peacocks and the opening of the branch there does now look as if it is imminent.

“It is anticipated that the

branch will open on Monday, September 7,” a Post Office spokesperson told Wells Voice, while adding that Covid-19 uncertainties mean that could still change.

Peacocks store manager Alex Williams said last month that they were disappointed with the delay, and that the lockdown had had a knock-on effect on the opening of the post office counters in the store.

Next Wells litter pick on horizon THE next Wells litter pick has been organised for the weekend of September 18, 19 and 20.

“It’s not always been an easy ride and was not always straightforward but we have always been able to talk things through. We have as much love for each other today as we’ve always had and more.”

Coffees could be enjoyed outdoors for some time yet

WELLS Market Place could remain pedestrianised until at least November 2021.

The area has been closed to all but essential traffic since midJune at the suggestion of Wells City Council, with ‘elephant feet’ barriers now in place to protect people sitting at the extra tables and chairs the cafes have put out.

Discussions have been taking place between the city council and Mendip District Council, which has responsibility for the Market Place, and Somerset County Council, which has responsibility for highways, about the possible continuation of the temporary pedestrianisation arrangements.

A district council spokesperson said: “Mendip has been working with Wells City Council and Somerset County Council on the temporary pedestrianisation of Market Place, ensuring measures are

in place for its safe use by hospitality businesses who have the required Pavement Licence.

“The temporary road closures will remain in place for up to 18 months. They are reviewed weekly by Somerset County Council, and so could change quickly.”

The pedestrianisation has been popular with cafe owners and the public.

Julie Lloyd, owner of Kitty Banks, said: “I am grateful to Mendip for putting the bollards in place and allowing us to use the allocated space in front of our premises, as we have limited space inside to operate with. All we need now is continuous good weather.”

Pavement Licence a requirement BUSINESSES that want to put tables and chairs on the pavement outside their cafes/ bars/pubs and restaurants must apply for a Pavement Licence.

These cost £100 and applications must be made to Mendip District Council.

A district council spokesperson said: “The focus

of a licence, and Mendip District Council, is safety. Businesses are asked to read the regulations carefully before they apply as there are conditions. Businesses also need to submit a plan clearly showing the proposed area covered by the licence in relation to the highway. The application fee is non-refundable.”

He said: “The ‘opening up’ of the Market Place has been unbelievably well received by the public, and scores of customers have stopped me to say how wonderful it is to be able to fully enjoy the square. I have not heard a single negative comment about it. Everyone has the same message: ‘Why can’t it be like this all the time?’

“I think that the opening up of the square has been the very best thing that could have happened for Wells. There is a groundswell of public opinion that says let’s make this a permanent thing.

It will surely lead to a growth in visitors and the whole of the city will prosper from it.”

Councillor Lois Rogers, a Wells district councillor who has worked to help make a success of the new arrangements, said: “It’s obviously been extremely successful. It looks nice and everybody likes it. If we can keep it going that will be good.”

Discussions are taking place between interested parties about the possible enhancement of the pedestrianisation scheme.

One suggestion is to try to make the Market Place more attractive by interspersing the barriers with large plant troughs on trolleys that can be wheeled

into position and wheeled away again when required.

Thought is also being given to what might happen when the weather turns cooler, and whether gazebo-like structures could be erected to shield cafe customers from the elements.

Wells City Council Town Clerk Steve Luck said that the city council would like to take over control of Market Place from Mendip and oversee more improvements.

He said: “Wells City Council suggested the idea of a temporary closure of the Market

Good to see city embracing cafe culture Wells Civic Society chair Chris Winter says that Wells is finally catching up with historic cities all over Europe I MAY not speak for all of the members of the civic society, but I hope I can say on their behalf that we welcome the recent changes in Wells. Over the years of my involvement with the society we have carried out a number of surveys and reports into traffic, signage, shop fronts and more, and have helped to campaign for a number of improvements to the natural and historic built environments. We have supported many projects, including Visit Wells, the Meet & Greet team, and are currently working with the city council on the Neighbourhood Plan. So we really do want the best for the city.

I have brought many visitors to Wells, friends and colleagues, for work and pleasure, who have

Not anymore.

It could be that Covid-19 will have at least some positive outcomes, not only for the environment and climate change,

as we are led to believe, but also for Wells as the city embraces the cafe culture and welcomes a new era of cooperation and support for local businesses.

If we must continue to see friends and family and to meet colleagues en plein air for the foreseeable future, Wells

is in an excellent position to make the most of its beautiful surroundings to accommodate this new way of life and to enhance community at the same time. And what better place to enjoy cycling and walking than the city and its environs?

Like many people, my work and my holidays took me to historic towns and cities all over Europe and I enjoyed sitting outside and watching the world go by – winter and summer – with a cup of coffee (Paris of course), hot chocolate (Prague), a beer (Ljubljana) or a cool white wine (too many to mention).

There are so many examples from the UK and Europe of combining aspects of traffic management, tourism, conservation, planning and so on, which can benefit everyone – residents, visitors and businesses, so we can learn as we go and look forward to the Wells of the future.

Old Deanery to be marketed once again THE Old Deanery is going back on the market – again.

The historic property on Cathedral Green was originally put up for sale last year, and an offer from a private buyer was accepted, but no sale ensued.

It was reported to be under offer again last month, only for that deal too to now fall through.

The Diocese of Bath and Wells, which is selling The Old Deanery after relocating its offices to Flourish House at Cathedral Avenue, said in a statement: “The trustees of The Bath and Wells Diocesan Board of Finance have decided to remarket The Old Deanery, as the sale to a purchaser was unable to progress. It will be marketed from August 24 through Carter Jonas and Lodestone Property.

“The trustees have a duty of care to ensure that the proceeds from the sale benefit the mission and ministry of the Church, and all the people of Somerset, whom the Church serves.”

The news will give encouragement to the Save the Old Deanery community group which would like to buy the building and use it for the benefit of local people.

Their vision is to turn it into a community hub incorporating a world-class art gallery or museum, a restaurant, cafe and shop. They would also like to make more of the important Turner Herb Garden.

The group unfurled a banner reading ‘Save the Old Deanery for the people of Wells’ in front of the building on July 26. A

Adrian I’Anson and Paddy O’Hagan have sent a letter on behalf of the organisation to the Diocesan Board of Finance setting out the strength of support for their proposals. At the time of writing, they said “a truly astonishing 887 people have signed up to support the community bid, with only three people expressing doubts. This is unprecedented for Wells.”

They say that the community bid is also supported by

members of Wells City Council, the leader of Mendip District Council and the Wells MP, and that their bid should be viewed favourably even if it is not the highest in cash terms.

They say: “While we appreciate the need for the Diocese to safeguard its financial position, we would ask you to give greater weight, than you have applied hitherto, to the suitability of the use of this key building which sits within one of the few intact groups of mediaeval ecclesiastical buildings in Europe. The Charity Commissioner’s Official Guidance says that a charity can accept a lower bid if its

surveyor recommends that the overall offer is the best that can reasonably be obtained.

“Even if our cash bid is in fact lower, we have offered a share of future profits or gate money, it will enhance the Diocese’s mission as part of the community and increase its income from more tourist footfall to the Cathedral and Bishop’s Palace (Wells Heritage Partnership support the bid). Separately the Localism Act makes clear that public use should be the first consideration, which will also be very relevant to any planning application.”

A selection of comments they have received from the public were included with the letter.

“I am a Wells resident who has visited The Old Deanery on a Heritage Open Day, and the thought of this masterpiece of a building falling into private ownership is unthinkable. I fully support your efforts to secure the building for the people of Wells and its visitors to enjoy. This project would bring a material asset to Wells that will encourage visitors and locals alike to make this space into something magical again,” says one.

“The benefit to the people of Wells of keeping the building in local ownership and use would be immense. Selling to a developer reflects a lack of understanding of Wells residents and is akin to selling the family silver without due regard of the history or a vision of the future.

Is the very short term gain worth it? Please, please talk to the locals,” says another.

The full-size Friesian dairy calf, emblazoned with the Roly’s Fudge Pantry logo, will be taking up permanent residence in the shop window, to celebrate the fact that all Roly’s dairy fudge is made with fresh whole milk and butter, sourced locally in Somerset.

Store pulls plug on illuminated signs MORRISONS have bowed to public pressure and dropped plans for illuminated signs at the back of their store in Wells.

They were facing strong opposition to their proposals to replace existing signs with new illuminated signs, with critics saying that two in particular spoil the view from Palace Fields and Tor Hill.

A petition opposing the signs has gained nearly 1,000 signatures, and Wells City Council’s Planning Committee recommended refusal of the plans at its meeting on July 30.

The plans for the erection of new signage including 14 illuminated and non-illuminated signs had seen 29 public comments being submitted to the district council – all of them objections.

A Morrisons spokeswoman told Wells Voice: “We have listened to the comments from the local community and as a result we have now amended our plans. The two signs proposed at the back of the store will no longer be illuminated. We work hard to be a good neighbour in Wells and welcome further discussions on our plans with Mendip District Council.”

council ward councillor Lois Rogers.

She said: “We’re delighted that Morrisons have listened to the objections of many people and have at last agreed to turn off the lights at the back of the shop.

“They have recognised that this is a spectacular view that is loved by local people and tourists to Wells.”

She said that there has been public distress about the illuminated signs ever since they were first switched on, and that it was an issue that came up “again and again” during canvassing in last year’s local elections.

When Wells Voice first reported on the new application last month, a district council spokesperson said that advertisement consent for an illuminated sign at Morrisons was originally granted in November 2012 and expired five years later, meaning that technically the store’s signage was no longer authorised. They said of the new application: “This application will be assessed and determined in accordance with national and local planning policy frameworks and the council’s adopted scheme of delegation for decisions on planning application.”

Committee recommends refusal WELLS City Council’s Planning Committee has recommended refusal of plans by Morrisons for new signs at its store in Wells.

A majority of committee members were opposed to the planning application by the company for signage including 14 illuminated and non-illuminated signs, as part of a national rebrand. The most contentious signs are the two illuminated ones that can be seen from the road between Wells and Dulcote.

Committee chairman Councillor Adrian I’Anson said: “I’m totally opposed to the eastward-looking signs. I’m not sure that we need them at all but if we do have them they shouldn’t be illuminated.”

Councillor Louis Agabani said

that 95 per cent of retailers on the High Street would probably like illuminated signs if they were permitted, and said of the Morrisons signs: “I don’t see why any of those signs need to be illuminated at any time.”

Councillor Norman Kennedy and Councillor Celia Wride both said that the lights should be off when the store closes. Councillor Kennedy said: “It’s one of the most beautiful views you can have down through the valley and you have this big light all the time.”

Councillor John Osman cautioned that there should be good planning reasons for objecting to the application.

Refusal was recommended for reasons of scale and amenity.

Frank remembers his role at ending of Second World War THIS year’s Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) on August 15 marked 75 years since the Japanese surrender effectively brought an end to the Second World War. And one Wells resident had more reason than most to think back to the events of 1945 – because he was part of the Guard of Honour for the signing of the surrender in Singapore.

Frank Beecher, now aged 94, was then a 19-year-old Able Seaman in the Royal Navy.

He had signed up for service in the Navy aged just 17. After brief training, he joined the Hunt-class Destroyer, HMS Farndale, which had been launched from Swan Hunter’s at

Wallsend in 1940. He spent the next few years in the North Sea and Mediterranean, until being sent to the Far East in 1945.

He was proud of the Farndale’s record of 11 battle honours, including supporting the Allied landings in Italy.

His final distinction was as part of the Guard of Honour for the signing of the surrender at Singapore on September 12. All naval and military units in the region were represented and it was a very proud day for a young man not yet 20 years old.

Key workers celebrate being together again

By Emma James TWO key workers from Wells, Donna and Garry Marke, had an emotional reunion after the coronavirus pandemic kept them apart for more than two months.

The couple, who have been married for eight years, were separated for 70 days when Donna moved into the care home where she works to help look after the residents.

She has been deputy manager at Court House Retirement Home in Cheddar for five years, and moved into the care home on April 12 with some of the other staff.

She said: “I just knew that we had to protect the residents from coronavirus. At the time there was no testing. Court House is a very special place. It’s all about the residents.”

Frank said: “I remember the Japanese officers being marched in escorted by the Gurkhas.

“Many people forget the war in the Far East, but you don’t if you were involved.”

HMS Farndale sailed back to Sheerness from the Far East in November 1945 and Frank was reunited with his family, and girlfriend Dorothy, in Kent.

He was demobbed in March 1947, and married Dorothy later

that year. They were married for more than 70 years, spending the last 30 in Shepton Mallet before moving to Wells in 2018.

Frank, as many young men did, remembers the war as a bit of an adventure, regaling his children and then his grandchildren with stories of falling down the funnel and setting fire to the galley, as well as nights on shore leave and the hospitality of the Salvation Army.

But there were lost comrades and some awful sights too, though he never dwelt on those for long.

Poppy Appeal not taking place this year THE Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal will not be taking place this year.

Wells Poppy Appeal organiser Derek Cooper said: “Due to Covid-19 the Royal British Legion is not allowing any Poppy Appeal organiser like myself to conduct an appeal.

“There will be no shop, street, house-to-house, market stall or supermarket collections run by myself and my wonderful volunteers.

“The Royal British Legion is in talks with supermarkets to take stock and make it available in store.

“They will also contact directly to schools.

“I have been allowed to order wreaths for Remembrance Sunday that is now complete for delivery in August.

“As regards our Annual Appeal Concert, this will most likely not take place.

Remembrance services are still under discussion.

“I look forward to getting back to normal in 2021 as it is the 100th year of The Royal British Legion and also of the Wells branch, one of the first to be formed.

During the service, the roll of Somerset people who died in the

Introducing Tigger... Bishop undergoing

cancer treatment

TIGGER is a 9-year-old male.

If you could compare Tigger to a human I might choose a hardened motor biker; big, rugged around the edges and a little intimidating. Get to know him though and he is a complete softie. He loves sitting on laps and snuggling in.

Unfortunately Tigger has an infectious disease called Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). He has most likely caught this from fighting other cats or mating with the local ladies. Whilst this virus is not transmissible to humans he could pass it on to other cats. With this in mind Tigger is going to need

either an indoor home or one that is very rural.

We will ONLY consider indoor homes that have lots of space. He has been used to being out and about and whilst we think he will be happy living inside he will still require room to wander and investigate.

His condition is unlikely to require medication and expensive trips to the vets. At the moment he is outwardly healthy and not showing an clinical signs of his condition.

Tigger could live with calm children and he would be OK with a cat-friendly dog.

THE Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Rt Rev Peter Hancock, is undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia.

In a letter to the diocese, he said he faced a “challenging” few months as he begins a course of chemotherapy.

He wrote: “This has been a challenging year for all of us and the coronavirus has meant that many of the things we had planned for this year have either had to change or have been put on hold.

“I am writing now to inform you that I too am facing a challenging few months.

“I have not been entirely well in recent weeks and on Friday I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia. I am really grateful to the doctors who I have been seeing and for the speed in which treatment is to be provided.

“I have informed my colleagues on the Bishop’s Staff and I am confident that everything in the diocese will continue to run smoothly whilst I step back for a while.

“Jane and I have a wonderful family who have been very supportive and we are grateful

Bishop Peter has stepped back from his work to all our family and friends for their support, encouragement and prayers.

“I shall continue to pray for you all and would be grateful for your prayers.”

Bishop Ruth, who had begun a period of annual leave and sabbatical, will return at the beginning of September.

She said: “I realise the news of Bishop Peter’s illness will come as a shock to us all and we send him, Jane and the family our love and our commitment to pray for him daily.”

No cafe but repairs still possible SADLY, after the very successful and enjoyable Wells Repair Cafe in February, which was part of the nationwide ‘Big Fix’ campaign, we have not been able to invite you to come and have a cuppa, piece of cake and a chat, and at the same time bring along items to be fixed by our volunteers.

I am sure many people will have missed this opportunity to socialise, learn a few new skills and get their well-loved items mended. Who knows when we can bring the repair cafe back again, possibly not in October

Organisers innovate for 2020 festival WELLS will have its much loved literary festival this autumn – but with two new developments.

Firstly, Covid and the safety of festival-goers have been at the forefront of organisers’ minds so the Wells Festival of Literature, taking place from October 16-24, will now offer a hybrid experience: the usual audience gathering in Cedars Hall, Wells, combined with live, highly professional streaming of the whole festival for a wider audience.

Strict Covid measures will be installed at Cedars Hall – including cleaning, social distancing and masks – with a seating algorithm to allow groups to sit together. Delight at receiving Queen’s Nurse title A WELLS nurse is celebrating receiving the Queen’s Nurse title in recognition of her high level of commitment to patient care and nursing practice.

Paula Messenger is a General Practice Nurse working at Wells Health Centre and also Nurse Advisor for Somerset Local Medical Committee.

“I have worked as a registered nurse in the community for 17 years and was delighted to see my work recognised. I am passionate about high standards of care,” said Paula.

She has been a General Practice Nurse for 17 years and has worked at Wells Health Centre for almost four years.

For the past four years she has also worked as General Practice Nurse Advisor for Somerset Local Medical Committee, supporting nurses and practices across Somerset.

The Queen’s Nursing Institute is a registered charity dedicated to improving the nursing care of people in the home and community. All nurses, health visitors and midwives with five years’ experience working in the

community are eligible to apply for the title of Queen’s Nurse (QN).

“The application for the QN title was in-depth and consisted of patient feedback, manager feedback and a selection of essays about community nursing,” said Paula, who received the award in June.

“Sadly there will be no London awards ceremony this year and my certificate and badge came in the post, with a virtual ceremony planned for September.

“Since four years of age I wanted to be a nurse and I believe I was called to it. I wanted to do work that helped people.”

She said that working in Wells is very different from the start of her career at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, and added: “I feel the pandemic has brought the city together in many ways with a good example being the coronavirus network.

The staff at Wells Health Centre have not only supported each other but provided ongoing care and support to the community.”

Appointments and general enquiries Patients should make initial contact with Wells Health Centre over the phone or by using Engage Consult.

Telephone As per national public health guidance for GP surgeries, patients who ring the surgery will be offered a telephone consultation with the most appropriate person who is able to help them. Depending on the reason for their call, this might be with a GP, Nurse Practitioner, Practice Nurse, Health Care Assistant or a member of the admin team.

During the phone call the clinician will assess the needs of the patient and if a face to face consultation is required they will be offered an appointment to come into the surgery. The patent will be given a time that they will be seen. It’s important that patients adhere to the times in order to minimise the number of patients we have in the practice at any one time.

When patients come into the surgery, we will ask them to wear a mask and the clinician they are there to see will meet them at the front door.

Engage Consult Wells Health Centre introduced Engage Consult to the range of services it offers in June of this year. It allows patients to contact the surgery for advice, provide us with information, request letters and many other features. It is also possible to submit photographs and other

documents electronically.

There is a wealth of self-help information for most common conditions also.

It has had a very good uptake and patients find it an efficient way to communicate with us.

There is no waiting around for a telephone call, and the messages are notified directly to your email inbox. Doctors and other healthcare professionals can send a message back if required.

The system is active all the time, and most patients will receive a response the same working day.

It isn’t a system that can be used to manage urgent, emergency or more complex medical problems, however, it has proven to be very useful for managing simple medical conditions and queries.

Engage Consult has been particularly helpful during the Covid-19 pandemic as it has allowed good communication with patients without needing to risk face to face contact. This has been particularly helpful with our most vulnerable patients who have been ‘shielding’.

The global pandemic has forced us to work in very different ways, relying on technology, emails and text messaging. We would be very grateful if you can make sure that we have your most up to date contact details.

WELLS CITY PRACTICE AT Wells City Practice we are constantly reviewing the way we work and the services we can provide, in line with ever changing guidance relating to Covid-19.

All initial contact with the doctors at the surgery will be via a booked telephone call.

If your problem requires we have a number of face-to-face appointments available with our GPs each day which will be booked by the doctor during a triage telephone call. This can be for the same day, or later in the week, depending on availability and the nature of the issue. We have to keep these limited due to the need to decontaminate

As always we have a duty doctor each day who will deal with anything urgent. This will be initially by telephone but if the GP feels that you need to be seen that day this can also be arranged. Our nurses and HCAs (healthcare assistants) are seeing patients all day for blood tests requested by a GP, dressings, immunisations, smears, chronic disease monitoring etc. There are still some things that they are unable to do, such as spirometry and ear syringing, but we are monitoring the guidance closely so that we can resume more services as soon as it is safe to do so. As with the GPs, our wider clinical team also need to change PPE and decontaminate their work area between face-to-face appointments.

Our Paramedic is still available to see patients as directed by our GP. We also have a First Contact Physiotherapist joining us at the end of August. If your condition is appropriate then our reception team will book an initial telephone consultation with the FCP who will then decide, with you, the best way to manage your treatment.

In most cases, if you are asked to come to the practice you will need to come to our front door and ring the bell, a receptionist will then take your details and check your appointment.

waiting area. In all instances you will need to wear a face covering but if this presents a problem please inform reception who will discuss this with the clinician you are seeing.

We are currently accepting prescription request over the phone, online or via email. We also have request forms in our foyer that you can complete and place in the letter box outside.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms associated with Covid-19 and have a face-to-face consultation booked, please do not come to the surgery, telephone and let reception know and then contact 111 either online or by telephone.

PRIORY DENTAL PRIORY Dental has been open since June 8. They were initially prioritising urgent and emergency care but the team have now progressed to undertaking routine examinations and treatment for

those in appropriate groups as well as seeing new patients to the practice. Those who are in the most vulnerable groups, such as those who were previously shielding, are being asked to make themselves known so that special arrangements can be made for their urgent and emergency care while routine care for these vulnerable groups is being deferred where possible.

Although they will try and identify previously shielding patients, they have asked if people can help by clearly identifying themselves when telephoning the practice and speaking to practice staff. Some treatments are also more limited than normal due to measures taken to control the production of aerosols but the team would like to reassure everyone that they have lots of ways to ensure you still get the same high level of dental care you need while keeping everyone safe.

Dental practice expands and modernises A DENTAL practice in Wells has completed a refurbishment that has seen it double the number of surgeries and entirely renew its dental equipment in every room.

The modernisation programme at Priory Dental has cost around £250,000, and left it well placed to provide services for the city’s growing population.

“I’m really pleased with what we’ve achieved,” said principal dentist Dr Ryan Hughes.

“The modernisation brings us up to date with the latest dental technology and has allowed us to attract some of the most experienced dentists around to join the team.”

When Ryan took over the practice in 2016, it was already a long-standing feature of the city, with a line of dentists going back to the very early years of the last century.

Some people may remember it in Chamberlain Street until the late 1980s before it moved to the current location in Priory Road, where it was run by Bob Paice as a two-surgery practice until his retirement.

Ryan said: “It was time for it to move forward and modernise.

That’s what we have been doing ever since. It is about a modern, advanced type of dentistry while

The two additional surgeries, taking the total up to four, has allowed an increase in the team of dentists to five – and the ability to treat more patients.

“As Wells grows we have built the capacity to serve the population. I know the population have been concerned about the availability of doctors and dental services,” said Ryan.

It has also meant Priory Dental can see more patients than would otherwise have been the case due to the coronavirus and the need to sanitise surgeries between appointments.

“This refurbishment has allowed us to deal with the Covid period much more efficiently and effectively than might have been the case otherwise,” said Ryan.

“We reopened on June 8, initially undertaking urgent and emergency care. In

recent weeks we’ve started to reintroduce more routine care where it’s appropriate, including examinations and new patients.”

As well as the extension to the practice, the makeover includes a new, more welcoming reception area, and disabled facilities.

The practice is also developing a new website, and one of the dental team, Dr Helena Morrell, is going to be launching a facial aesthetics service from the premises.

“We are a family orientated dental practice but we want to offer a comprehensive restorative service including advanced dental implants, smile makeovers and facial aesthetics,” said Ryan.

Unusually, he is qualified in both dentistry and medicine, having previously intended to practice maxillofacial surgery in a hospital setting until being drawn to a rural life in Wells and the running of a dental practice.

Other team members include receptionist Joanne Carver, who has worked at the practice for nearly 28 years, and head nurse Lisa Binning, who has been there for 14 years.

“I’m incredibly proud of the team here. I couldn’t have found a nicer, more caring group of people to work with,” said Ryan.

Record number of entries for city’s prestigious art competition THIS year’s Wells Art Contemporary competition received a record-breaking number of entries, with more than 3,500 entries from 1,742 artists in 50 different countries, including Australia, Brazil,

Ghana, Taiwan, Uruguay, Russia and South Korea.

Judges Phillip Allen, Neville Gabie and Lisa Wright are now going through all of the submissions to choose a shortlist of 80 or so works of art. These

will go on show in a Virtual Exhibition starting on October 1.

The competition organisers said: “We are humbled to know that WAC 2020 gave people of all ages, locations and inspirations an opportunity to

get creative during these months of lockdown. We would like to thank and congratulate every single artist who responded to our call for entries this year, and look forward with anticipation to the Virtual Exhibition.”

Push to promote area’s businesses TRADERS in Queen Street and the surrounding streets have launched an initiative urging people not to overlook their businesses.

Beyond Wells High Street aims to highlight the dozens of independent and artisan businesses at the lower end of the city centre, ranging from A2 Gallery and Amba to Whiting & Son and Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe.

“The idea is to energise interest in the businesses in this part of Wells. With most of the focus nearly always being on the historic centre, we often feel overlooked down this end and so just wanted to redress

“With the additional business concerns surrounding the current pandemic many of us that were forced to close our premises had to adapt to keep our businesses going. Daniels switched to providing home deliveries for their cooked food

and Kids Stuff and Britelly have been offering local home delivery of their ranges in addition to a greater presence online.

“With reopening we wanted to encourage people to shop locally; so a small group of us felt that it would be a great idea to promote the mainly independent and artisan businesses that are on the edge of the main shopping area. Many are hidden away in side streets or courtyards and as we all need additional support in current times we felt that it would be better off doing it collectively.”

The Facebook group Beyond Wells High Street has been set up as a hub for businesses to promote themselves.

“We often have people, visitors and locals alike, who say, ‘We never knew you were here’ and the joke goes that many do not venture beyond Specsavers when walking down the High Street,” said Peter.

“I had a lady visit my own shop the week after I reopened who said exactly this: that she had previously bought her jigsaw puzzles in the bookshop that closed last year, and had never ventured any further down until now; and this was a lady who said she’d lived in Wells for more than ten years.”

A map created to promote the area was put up in the window of The Works, and is now displayed in other shop windows as well.

“We also have the support of local celebrity cat Boris, who may often be found in photos promoting one or other of the local businesses,” said Peter.

Network keen to provide support THE Wells Coronavirus Network is keen to support both existing local businesses and start-ups in these difficult and uncertain times. Its services include: n The Sympathetic Ear Service, where retired business people share current businesses’ troubles. n The Local Professionals Service, where active professionals advise businesses on a free or subsidised basis.

n The Business Start Up Service for those who have or will lose their jobs and want to start on their own.

Two teenagers run for Yemen FROM a half an hour morning activity to avoid boredom in lockdown, to an organised charity run raising over £1,000 for those struggling in war-torn Yemen.

Charlie Lewis and Lorenzo Bishop, both 19 years old and former Wells Blue School students, took to running this spring to keep fit as the gyms and sports grounds closed around the country. They quickly began to see significant improvements in the time and distance of their runs and before long Charlie and Lorenzo agreed that they would run their first half-marathon to raise money in support of the Yemen, which is suffering one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent years.

Using JustGiving the two set a hopeful target of £100. However, with the immense generosity of those in the local community, as well as family and friends elsewhere, the pair managed to raise a staggering £1,071 thanks

Charlie Lewis and Lorenzo Bishop to 68 kind donations. So, on the morning of July 18, they headed out to the Somerset Levels and ran the 21-kilometre halfmarathon in 1 hour 50 minutes.

Pride in students’ achievements in far from straightforward year A-LEVELS AMIDST the exceptional situation that this year has created, The Blue School has said it is very proud of its students for the results that they have received in their A-levels and BTECs. The vast majority of students have achieved their first choice university place or are able to embark upon their chosen career path.

These include a number of places at the most competitive universities and courses across the country, including Oxbridge and medicine, and a wide range of courses and careers.

Headteacher, Mark Woodlock, said: “I am extremely proud of the achievements of all of our students. We consider it our mission to provide our students with the best opportunities for the next steps in their education and careers.

“In a difficult year, with unique and challenging circumstances, this year group were judged on qualities that matter. They were not assessed on how they performed in just a handful of exams, spread out over a few weeks in the summer of Year 11. Instead, they were fully judged on their performance over a long period of time: at least two years of

their GCSE courses and in most instances over their five years at The Blue School.

“In many ways, this was a greater challenge. Without warning or preparation, without the ability to construct revision and alter the past, these students were assessed on who they had become, on what they had achieved over time, on their approach, attitude and outcomes.

“Even in these last few days, before the results were published, the challenge of listening to the media coverage of the A-level grading crisis must have had an impact. We should not underestimate the extent of change that these students have faced.

WELLS Police Station could become the site of retirement apartments.

Housbuilder Churchill Retirement Living has exchanged contracts to acquire the land currently occupied by the police station, on Glastonbury Road.

The company says it will now look forward to consulting with local people ahead of any formal planning application to redevelop the site.

“There is a compelling overall housing need in Wells, especially for older people,” said the company. “Following the success of Churchill’s St Athelm Lodge development on West Street, another new retirement development would increase access to this type of housing, allowing older people to downsize and free up underoccupied houses in the local area for families.”

The St Athelm Lodge development has 31 apartments, with just a few remaining on sale.

Company confirms Wells shop saved THE long-established M&Co store in Wells is one of more than 200 of the company’s UK outlets to be saved following a financial restructuring exercise.

The company, which has had a presence in the city for more than 30 years, appointed administrators in April as the coronavirus outbreak forced the closure of most UK retailers for almost four months.

that can be good news for local high street stores like M&Co. That’s why we are looking at ways of working in partnership with other local retailers to highlight the tremendous range of shopping that can be found in communities like this all over the country.

“Local economies rely to a huge degree on their town centres and we have seen too many high streets hollowed out by successive shop closures.

More and more people are beginning to realise that, if they don’t support their town centres, everyone’s quality of living really takes a hit, so we are proud to be playing a part in the drive to shop locally.”

The administration process, which is being managed by Deloitte, will see the estate reduced from 265 to 218 stores.

November charter fair called off THIS year’s November Carnival Charter Fair has been cancelled.

The decision was made following talks between Wells City Council Town Clerk Steve Luck, Mayor of Wells Councillor John Osman, fair operators Shaun and Krystal Rogers and Richard Green, Honorary Member of the Showmen’s Guild.

It was agreed that it would not be feasible to go ahead due to the Covid-19 virus and there being no Wells Carnival this year.

Not since the outbreak of the Black Death have the twice yearly charter fairs been unable to take place, but organisers hope that they will be both be back in the Market Place next year.

Outdoor theatre is taking place at The Bishop’s Palace this August and September

Outdoor theatre performances at Bishop’s Palace THE Bishop’s Palace & Gardens in Wells has had to revise its Summer Outdoor Theatre Season after the normal schedule was disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Three performances are still taking place in the historic Palace Gardens: Alice in Lockdown, which took place on August 18, the story of Gawain and the Green Knight on August 26, and Romeo and Juliet on September 15.

Seasoned storyteller Beth Webb will tell the story of

Gawain and the Green Knight.

This medieval tale of blood and honour is aimed at adults and will be told over the course of an hour by the terrace near the Rose Garden. Tickets are £15 adults, £12 Palace members and key workers and the doors open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start.

Well-established theatre troupe The Handlebards will be giving Shakespeare’s most famous love story, Romeo and Juliet, their unique spin, so the audience is guaranteed lots of laughs as well as tears in their

slick 90-minute production.

Doors open at 6pm for a 7pm performance. Tickets are £18 adult and £10 child. A small number of key worker tickets are available at £10.

For all performances, audience members will be well spaced, and will need to take their own seating or rugs. Picnics and drinks are encouraged, and the shows will go ahead whatever the weather – so be prepared. u Rare Plant Fair back with safety in mind, page 35

Refurbished gym open again PEOPLE who have missed being able to go to the gym in Wells or attend fitness classes now have somewhere to go again.

The Kingdom Training Gym and Armed and Ready on the Keward Mill Trading Estate, Jocelyn Drive, reopened on July 27 after being closed for four months.

Owner Scott Hurley said that during the shutdown the gym had a full refurbishment so it looks brand new again, and new systems have been put in place to keep everyone safe.

These include hand sanitation upon entry and around the gym, a one-way system, social distancing and a cap on numbers at any one time. Customers must clean every machine as soon as they have finished using it, no towels are allowed and no changing room facilities are open.

WELLS Blue School is to receive £540,454 in government funding being provided to repair and upgrade school buildings.

The Kings of Wessex Academy in Cheddar and Wedmore First School will each receive a slice of another £600,000, after Weare First School, Crispin School, Hugh Sexey Middle School and Brent Knoll Primary School received funding last month.

A Blue Plaque has been unveiled on the wall of The City Arms in High Street to mark the building’s place in the history of Wells. 2020 food festival to be virtual event WELLS Food Festival will be going virtual for 2020.

While the physical event is being put on the back-burner until 2021, the organisers have teamed up with Wells-based Charlie Bigham’s to host a unique virtual festival over the weekend of October 10 and 11.

Championing local food and drink has never been more important so artisan producers have been put at the heart of the online event, showcasing more than 150 from the region.

Charlie Bigham said: “The South West is home to a wealth of fantastic independent producers, who have nurtured their businesses by investing time, resource and passion over many years.

“Our aim is to help this artisan community by bringing the Wells Food Festival to a virtual national audience, giving foodies across the country the chance to support and buy from specialist artisan producers.”

A packed festival programme has been put together for home

cooks and food lovers alike.

There will be live-streamed masterclasses, cook-alongs and talks by Charlie Bigham and his team of master chefs, plus guest appearances by food stalwarts such as William Sitwell.

At-home festival-goers can sign up to a series of workshops.

These include flower arranging with Georgie Newby from Common Farm Flowers, a live drawing workshop with renowned illustrator Emily Sutton and some ‘no dig’ gardening hints and tips from Charles Dowding.

And for the festival finishing touch, there will be live-streamed music by blues band Harlem Rhythm Cats.

It’s been a challenging year.

Charities given 400 face masks WELLS City Council has given 400 face masks to local charities.

There were 200 for the Elim Connect Centre, which helps the homeless, and 200 for the Wells Storehouse Foodbank.

“It’s great to be given the masks we need when our finances are as tight as they are now,” said the centre’s Jim Wilkinson.

They will be used by the rough sleepers and other

homeless people that they support.

Sue Marland from the Foodbank said: “We will put the masks in the food parcels we give to families and individuals who are struggling financially.”

They are feeding 50 people a week.

Kevin Westwood, Wells Town Hall manager, told the charities: “If we can provide further help do give us a shout.”

Under the intestacy rules unmarried partners cannot inherit

Important to have legally valid Will drafted by qualified solicitor

FROM February 6, 2020, spouses or civil partners with children have been able to inherit £270,000 from intestate estates.

If someone dies without making a will – “dying intestate” – the amount of their estate inherited by their partner, children and other relatives is set

by Act of Parliament.

Under the intestacy rules, if there are no children then the partner will inherit the entire estate.

If there are children, partners will inherit all of the deceased’s personal property, the first £270,000 of the estate and half of the remaining estate – the other half will go to the children, either absolutely or on a statutory trust if the child or children is under 18.

At least every five years, the Government raises the amount partners can inherit in line with

the consumer price index.

In October 2014, the amount was set at £250,000, and it has been increased to £270,000 from February 6, 2020. This update was originally due in October 2019.

Unfortunately, under the intestacy rules unmarried partners cannot inherit and this does not look set to change.

It still remains important to have a legally valid Will to ensure that your estate is inherited according to your wishes and to avoid unintended consequences as a result of intestacy.

Councils set out different visions as

TWO separate proposals are being advocated as the way forward for local government in Somerset – with county councillors backing a single unitary authority, and the county’s district councils arguing for two.

At a meeting of the full council on July 29, county councillors approved the One Somerset business case setting out plans to abolish the county council and Somerset’s four district councils and replace them with a single council.

Days later, the district councils – Mendip District Council, Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset West and

County Hall in Taunton, top, and the Mendip council offices, above

Taunton Council and South Somerset District Council – announced their own plan to replace themselves and the county council with two new unitary authorities across Somerset.

County council leader David Fothergill believes that a single unitary authority is the best way forward because “five county and district councils with different processes, politics and objectives leads to confusion, frustration and mess”, and that the streamlining of services will save money.

He said: “I have argued long and loud that unitary status will remove duplication, create more

local opportunities for residents and businesses and deliver savings that could be invested in front-line services and priorities like climate change.

“I have been asking for two years, why have five chief executives, HR teams, IT contracts and so on when you could have just one. It is easy to understand and frankly a nobrainer.”

The district councils’ plan is to create two separate unitary councils merging Mendip District Council with South Somerset, and Somerset West and Taunton with Sedgemoor.

The council leaders have written to Cllr Fothergill saying

Pros and cons in each unitary suggestion WHEN the sun is shining in the middle of August, the reorganisation of local government is not exactly at the top of most people’s list of priorities. Indeed, even on dank November days, I’m not sure people give it much thought.

Yet there are vitally important services delivered by our councils and so any reorganisation matters a great deal to residents and businesses alike.

The proposal, for those of you who haven’t yet given it much thought, is that we abandon having two tiers of local government in favour of a unitary authority that delivers the full range of council services.

We’re not the only place in the country to still run like this, and there are plenty of counties that aren’t even considering a change at all, but many others have switched to unitaries so it is definitely the direction of travel, especially in the South West.

Cornwall has been a unitary for a long time, so too Bristol, North Somerset, Bath & North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Wiltshire made the switch a decade or so ago and Dorset did it last year.

Which leaves Somerset and Gloucestershire, who are both in the middle of the same debate,

There are effectively two proposals on the table thus far: One, proposed by the county council, would see a single unitary authority for the whole of Somerset rather like Cornwall or Wiltshire. Whilst an alternative proposal from the district councils would see two unitaries, one based on an amalgamation between Sedgemoor and Taunton & West Somerset and the other based on Mendip and South Somerset. Which is rather like they’ve done in Dorset.

I’d love to see another two options on the table in which we consider a single unitary for the whole of Somerset including North Somerset and B&NES and, my favoured option, three

unitaries; one amalgamating Sedgemoor and North Somerset, a second amalgamating Mendip and B&NES, and a third serving the south and west of the county amalgamating South Somerset and Taunton & West Somerset. However neither of those option are currently under consideration because B&NES and North Somerset haven’t shown any appetite for change.

Of the two proposals that are on the table, I see pros and cons to both. The M5 and BristolExeter mainline cohere the Sedgemoor/Taunton proposal whilst the A303 and WestburyTaunton line do the same for the Mendip/South Somerset one. I prefer a north-south split to an east-west one, but I see the logic and believe the proposal could work.

A single unitary meanwhile would enjoy economies of scale and would give Somerset a louder voice when debating further devolution but would cover an enormous geographical area. But, again, I believe this proposal could work.

There’s no right or wrong answer. Our current councils have their strengths and weaknesses but by and large, they’ve balanced their books and they deliver decent public

services at value for money to the taxpayer. We could, therefore, stick with what we’ve got.

However, I’d encourage you to have a read of the proposals that are emerging and to look at the successes and failures of those who have made this change before us. Control of our planning process, bin collections, social services, highways and transport planning, education, public health, licensing, recycling and much more are all at stake.

I’ll be doing likewise.

I’m instinctively in favour of unitary authorities but I genuinely don’t know whether we’d be best served by a single county-wide unitary or by a combination of the existing district councils in two or more smaller unitaries. I’ll challenge both sets of plans on behalf of my constituents and the communities in the northern part of the county as I’m determined that we benefit from these proposals just as much as Yeovil, Bridgwater and Taunton.

As the plans develop, I’ll also make sure the Government hears your views on the proposals because ultimately, whilst we’ll agree locally which proposal should go forward, the final decision on whether to change or not, will be taken in Whitehall.

In a joint statement they said: “Somerset’s four district councils are committed to creating the best possible future for the county, its people and its communities.

“We all agree change is needed and we have welcomed the Leader of Somerset County Council’s offer to rejoin discussions about creating a stronger future for the county together.

“After extensive research, the districts’ Leaders have agreed this change will most effectively be delivered through the creation

of two new councils, replacing the five existing authorities, helping to maintain crucial links with our people, communities and businesses.

“We are committed to putting together a detailed case for reform that delivers better outcomes. This will be available soon and we will be happy to discuss these exciting plans with Somerset County Council’s Leader.”

At the county council meeting on July 29, the Liberal Democrat group – including Wells county councillor Tessa Munt – opposed the business case to create One Somerset.

Lock said: “We absolutely accept the need for a change in the way services are delivered, but this business case is simply not good enough for our county or our residents. In such a diverse area, a ‘one size fits all’ solution to deliver local authority services will not work.

“The Conservatives’ plan does away with all five councils, creating just one covering the whole county – based in Taunton – which to us looks suspiciously like a county council takeover.”

The Government is keen on the formation of unitary authorities. A number have already been created in the West, such as Bath and North

East Somerset Council, Dorset Council and Wiltshire Council.

Wells MP James Heappey has said that he favours three unitaries across Somerset, with Mendip joining up with B&NES, North Somerset and Sedgemoor joining forces and Somerset West and Taunton merging with South Somerset.

The One Somerset business case was due to be submitted to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Robert Jenrick, for official review, with a timetable pointing to further consultation in the autumn and a new single council fully operating from 2022.

Opportunity to regain some of city’s assets HISTORY could be reversed to the benefit of Wells.

Back in 1887 the Recreation Ground and Bishop’s Barn were given to the people of Wells by Bishop Hervey.

Then in 1974 control of these – and other Wells assets like the Market Place and Athletic Ground – were passed to the newly formed Mendip District Council as part of a national reorganisation of local government.

Wells City Council would like such assets returned to the city with the revenue necessary to maintain them. One option would be the charges from the car parks in Wells controlled by Mendip.

This looks possible as the county council has put forward a proposal called “One Somerset” to abolish itself and all the district councils, including Mendip, and create one single new “unitary” authority for Somerset.

Somerset County Council Leader David Fothergill said he has “argued long and loud that unitary status will remove duplication, create more local opportunities for residents and businesses and deliver savings that could be invested in frontline services and priorities

“It’s the districts who will build a stronger economy, stronger communities, stronger care and stronger, sustainable services.”

Now the district councils have come up with their own proposal

– two unitary councils. One would merge Mendip and South Somerset, the other one merge Somerset West and Taunton with Sedgemoor.

“Whatever happens, this local government reorganisation in Somerset will provide a once in a generation opportunity to look afresh at how services are delivered to local communities,” said the chair of Wells City Council’s Local Government Reorganisation Working Group, Councillor Stewart Cursley.

“It would have a huge impact on the way public services are delivered to our communities.

It is therefore of critical importance that Wells City Council is fully consulted on the unitary authority proposals.”

Somerset County Council has now submitted an approved business case to the Secretary of State for local government and expects a reply in the autumn.

The national government is thought to be sympathetic to the idea of unitary councils but while the future is unclear, there seems to be a real chance of Wells regaining some of its assets.

Tables give Square a delightful charm I’M writing in connection with Chris Borrison’s recently published letter ref Wells Market Square and the potential this has for a highly agreeable piazzastyle facility.

I support this general idea and believe that, if sensibly done, it could add significantly to the Square’s attractiveness. In fact, there already seems to be an enthusiastic trend in this piazza direction as restaurant owners move tables outside creating a more “human”, amiable environment that will surely please visitors and residents.

Indeed, I haven’t seen a dull face since this trend started.

Everyone seems delighted; and as a resident myself living close to the Square I find threading my way between tables and diners enjoying themselves more satisfying than squeezing myself between lines of parked cars.

Young penpal makes surprise visit LITTLE Lilly really made an elderly widow’s day with a special surprise.

When lockdown began the ten-year-old schoolgirl decided to become a penpal for 85-yearold Ruth Andrews, a client of the Heads Up mental health charity at South Horrington, and she has corresponded with her ever since. Then Lilly’s parents, Marie and Chris, decided to give Ruth a treat, knowing that she was living shielded in Wookey and had lost her partner before lockdown.

“Lilly is coming to see you,”

said Ruth’s carer.

“No, she can’t be,” replied Ruth. “Lilly lives in Sheffield and that’s a long way away.”

Then Lilly arrived to Ruth’s delight. Flowers, chocolates and a card were presented.

“It was such a lovely day,” said Sally Dempsey from Heads Up. “A beautiful sunny afternoon. We sat out in the garden and Ruth was able to put a friendly face to her letter writer.”

And Lilly said she would keep on writing.

Feedback event on mental health move A DECISION on the closure of St Andrews Ward at Priory Health Park is expected in September.

The business case for relocating the acute mental health beds from Wells to Yeovil is due to come before the Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group’s governing body on September 24.

Before that, on September 2, people are being invited to attend a virtual event at which the independent analysis of the consultation that took place on the proposed relocation of the beds will be presented.

Over the 12 weeks of the consultation, 63 consultation events were held which were attended by 732 people, and 538 responses were received to the consultation survey. All the feedback from the consultation has been independently analysed

by Participate Ltd and their report has been published on the Fit for My Future website: www. fitformyfuture.org.uk The report reveals that of people from the Wells area who responded to the consultation, 75 per cent opposed relocating the beds while only 16 per cent were in favour. Nearly half of the responses to the consultation came from residents of Wells and nearby towns and villages.

IN the post-lockdown world that we live in I wanted to see if home care and live-in home care is still better than considering a nursing home. Of course, we all understand the main advantage of living within your own home and familiar surroundings where you will have all your personal possessions and memories, like that special spot in the garden or the memory of the DIY project.

Parish council thanks pair with community award A SPECIAL award has been presented to Andy Childs and Annette Healey of the Wookey Hub cafe to thank them for their contribution to the community throughout the lockdown – and which still continues now.

Wookey Parish Council chairman Dr Aidan Ancill presented them with the Award for Community Dedication on behalf of the council to acknowledge their tireless work over the past months.

Andy and Annette started the Hub in 2016 and before lockdown it flourished as a popular coffee shop and a small, sometimes overlooked grocery store.

Lockdown came on March 23, and so started a rapid transformation to a quality grocery store with the addition of takeaway coffee and cake.

In the first days, Andy was pivotal in organising volunteers to help in the Hub, take telephone orders, pack the goods and deliver to those who were shielding, and also to arrange a contact point to coordinate help with the collection of

prescriptions and any other needs that people had.

Annette travelled great distances to collect goods from cash and carry warehouses, ensuring that the village never ran out of flour or yeast, and sourced a great variety of items that had been requested.

They also organised a collection for 92-year-old village resident John Smith, who had £200 stolen by burglars – raising more than double what was stolen.

Many local producers are supported at the Hub, and local artists also have a presence there.

Annette’s daughter, Violet, has been at school throughout, and has entertained herself uncomplainingly while others have been busy in the shop.

Despite all the changes, physical and managerial, Andy, Annette and the volunteers have made sure that the Hub remains a friendly, caring and supportive place.

Points made about new homes scheme CONSULTANTS acting for Gleeson Strategic Land made a presentation to St Cuthbert Out parish councillors about the scheme for 68 homes on land at New House Farm, Haybridge.

They were keen to hear what questions and concerns the councillors had before a planning application is submitted to Mendip District Council in September. A public consultation has also been held online.

Planning consultant Joanna Manley told the meeting, held on Zoom, that although Wells is a smaller city, it has one of the most resilient economic bases in Mendip and is a sustainable city with a range of facilities and services. She added that the west of Wells is one of the least constrained in landscape terms, and that the site could be developed quite quickly, and contribute to the housing need that has been identified at a district level.

Commenting on the proposals, Councillor Jim Reeves

pointed out that the site is not within Wells but Haybridge, a tertiary village, and that the development would be adding to something like 700 houses and 2,000 people in new developments in the immediate area but with no community facilities proposed.

Councillor Ian Humphreys said that within the Mendip Local Plan there were at least two places in Wells that were possibly big enough for a development of this size that would be preferable locations, and that probably everybody living in Elm Close would be against the plans.

The North Ward of the parish council has had more than its fair share of housing, said Councillor Martin Cooke, and Councillor Ted Mallinson said: “I feel really sorry for the residents of Elm Close, because at the moment they’re being invaded from two sides from two new developments, and now there’s going to be another.”

Councillor Tony Hathaway said that there is not a need for these houses from local people and the local workforce; Councillor Mark Lunn was concerned about where the sewerage was going to go, saying that Haybridge pumping station is already over capacity, and also wondered where the run-off from the storm drains and attenuation pond was going to go; and Councillor Jenny Henderson said: “I am concerned at yet another development that seems to be way over and beyond local needs.”

Councillor Pablo Foster said: “It seems no different from any of the other previous developments. They come in with a number of housing units but no proposals as to what the people who will live in those houses will actually need by way of infrastructure. None of them make a contribution to education, GP surgeries or even a community facility and the offer of a play area looks very tiny and

not very well located. I think the whole thing is about housing units and not the people who will live on those estates.”

District councillor Matt Martin, standing in for Councillor Lucie Taylor-Hood, wondered where the need for this development was identified, and what the price range for the properties would be.

“It seems that a lot of builders are coming in, seeing that Wells is an affluent town and jacking up prices, meaning that people who are living here now have to move out,” he said.

He added that an issue was emerging in Mendip as to where people are meant to vote when it comes to an election. “We’ve got all these houses popping up like mushrooms everywhere but we’re having a real problem finding places for people to vote.

Why are you guys not building town halls, village halls? We need infrastructure. It’s not all about profit in houses. We’re meant to be building societies.”

Rachel follows own parents to become foster carer at 21 A WOMAN from the Mendip area has become Somerset’s youngest foster carer at the age of 21.

Rachel has spent the past two months being an emergency foster carer to a two-year-old boy and his year-old sister.

She is following in family footsteps as her parents started fostering aged 22 and were thought to be the youngest in the country to do so at the time.

Rachel had just graduated with a degree in social work when coronavirus emerged. She had planned to foster children at some point in her life, but the pandemic brought her plans forward when she heard that emergency, short-term foster carers were needed.

“I grew up in a fostering family, so I have been aware all my life,” Rachel said. “Our house was always busy, full of life and I knew I wanted to foster. It came as a bit of a shock going from being a student to a foster carer for two young children.

“But it’s been so rewarding, watching them grow and develop in a safe environment. There has been some tricky behaviour at times, but they are the sweetest children.”

Rachel still lives in the family home with her parents and younger brother so has plenty of support – and helping hands – and it means she can also have some moments to herself to keep in touch with friends.

The process of being

Rachel had always planned to foster children, having grown up in a fostering family approved as a short-term foster carer was streamlined during the health crisis to make sure children could still get the placements they needed.

“It was very intense, but our social worker was so enthusiastic and kind,” said Rachel. “There was a lot that needed to be done in a short time. But I was so impressed by the support and professionalism of everyone involved.”

Most of the process happened virtually but there was a faceto-face home visit as part of her assessment. She was put in touch with a “buddy” – an experienced foster carer who lives nearby and is part of a support group.

meant that many child-friendly activities – trips to playgrounds and parks – had to be put on hold. But Rachel built a mini assault course in the garden for the two-year-old to enjoy and the siblings love going out for walks.

She is determined to carry on with fostering and is going through the process of being approved as a permanent foster carer.

“I would definitely encourage others to come forward. Growing up in a family that fostered has been such a positive part of my life and has really made me who I am today. It influenced my degree and career choice and has really broadened my knowledge.”

Somerset county councillor Frances Nicholson, Lead member for Children’s Services, said: “I must thank Rachel and all our other foster carers who do so much for some of our most vulnerable children. We are always keen to recruit foster carers, and it’s particularly important during these difficult times.”

Foster carers need a spare room in their home and must be at least 21 years old, with no upper age limit. They receive a weekly fee and an allowance for the children’s needs.

Street once notorious as ‘hot-bed of vice’

ST Thomas Street, Este Wells, Biestewalles, East Wells was in days gone by a very distinct area of the city and parochially known as “Turkey”.

The street was not named St Thomas Street until the consecration of the church in 1857.

In 1815 it even formed its own “Corporation” with a “Mayor” to reflect its unique character described in a contemporary account as “the haunt and hot-bed of all manner of vice and wickedness and perhaps no place in all of the county of Somersetshire has such a reputation”.

It was a heavily populated district of the city with its many courts and cottages and many families sharing the same accommodation, with privies and pigsties sharing the small spaces in between the houses.

Freemasons donate £10,000 to Cathedral finance appeal SOMERSET Freemasons have made a donation of £10,000 to support Wells Cathedral’s Bounce Back Appeal.

The Cathedral launched the appeal to help make up for the shortfall in income during the three-month closure, which meant that some 70,000 people were unable to visit.

Somerset Freemasons, who have always had a close relationship with the Cathedral, were pleased to support the appeal with the £10,000 donation.

The Dean of Wells, the Very Rev Dr John Davies, said: “The Freemasons have been great friends of Wells Cathedral in the past, and their generosity and friendship in the present crisis is hugely appreciated.

“The pandemic and experience of lockdown have been very painful for so many people. Now more than ever, support is needed to sustain the Cathedral and all that it does in its community. SCF virus appeal tops £1m mark THE Somerset Coronavirus Appeal, launched by local charity Somerset Community Foundation (SCF) in late March of this year, has grown to over £1 million thanks to generous contributions by local individuals, charitable trusts and businesses, as well as funding from the national appeal, run by The National Emergencies Trust.

Robot initiative in line for top award SOMERSET County Council’s trail-blazing use of robot technology, to help poorly children learn, is in line for a top award – and has been commended nationally.

In the biggest initiative of its kind in the country, the council invested in 50 AV1 robots to support children who can’t be in school – whether it’s because they are sick or overcoming physical or mental health challenges.

Now the project has been shortlisted in the Digital Transformation category of the national MJ Awards 2020. The winner is due to be announced in early October. It has also been commended in the MJ’s Transforming Lives category.

The AV1 robots take the place of the child in the classroom, letting them see, hear and

contribute to lessons while they are out of school at home or in a hospital bed.

Schools and colleges can request use of the robots to work alongside or instead of traditional home tutor support.

The 50 robots come at a cost of £145,000 and schools pay a rental fee that covers running costs with any ‘profit’ being reinvested in more of the robots.

Since being introduced late last year, 45 schools have already asked to use a robot to support children who cannot physically be in the classroom, including through the Covid-19 crisis.

“It’s so rewarding to hear that our use of cutting-edge technology is being recognised at a national level,” said Councillor Faye Purbrick, Cabinet Member for Education and Transformation.

WILL Parry is a remarkable young man.

Despite being partially blind and confined to a wheelchair by cerebral palsy he has pledged to do 36 laps a day around the family’s garden for 31 days to raise money for a Wells charity.

He was not inspired by Sir Tom Moore, the 100-year-old war veteran who raised millions for the NHS by lapping his garden, but by his own father David who died of vascular dementia.

“I wanted to use my time well,” said 17-year-old Will, who went to St Cuthbert’s Infants and junior schools in Wells but then had to board at a special school

in Exeter because of his complex needs.

The charity he chose is The Lawrence Centre in Wells, most of whose members are living with dementia.

“I have known Maggie, the centre’s manager, since I was very small,” said Will.

His mother Elizabeth is a trustee at The Lawrence Centre and said Will feels very strongly about his dad. The 36 laps he does in his wheelchair add up to 1,387 metres a day.

Hand-weeding trials to take place EASTON has been chosen by Mendip District Council as the village pilot for manual weed management trials. Frome will be the urban area.

The trials are to see whether the council and community can tackle weeds without the use of the weed killer glyphosate, which has been linked to cancer in humans and is toxic to birds and insects.

Volunteers in those areas are being asked to step forward to take up the challenge, but the council is also seeking volunteers from across Mendip, including Wells, as it hopes to set up community weeding groups throughout the area.

Rare Plant Fair back with safety in mind THE Bishop’s Palace & Gardens in Wells has announced it will be holding its autumn Rare Plant Fair on September 13.

The event will be run in association with Rare Plant Fairs, manged by Ian and Teresa Moss, who are experts in bringing carefully curated selections of nurseries to stunning venues across the South West.

The events have proved to be extremely popular over the past few years, so this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the day will have a few changes to ensure everyone’s safety.

The tickets will have hourly allocated slots throughout the day, in order to spread the number of visitors. The nurseries attending are carefully selected by Ian and Teresa to ensure that they are genuine growers who produce most or all of the plants that they sell themselves.

The range is chosen so that they can offer the widest possible variety of plants to visitors, including perennials, shrubs and trees, alpines, bulbs and exotic plants.

All of the nursery owners are experts in the plants that they grow and are happy to offer the advice needed to select and grow the right plants for a particular garden.

The event is held entirely outdoors, but tickets for the fair include entrance to the Medieval Palace and 14 acres of RHS partner gardens and can be booked on The Bishop’s Palace website.

Medieval combat masterclasses LIVELY medieval combat specialists Bowlore Medieval will be setting up camp and providing displays at The Bishop’s Palace over the bank holiday weekend.

Normally a very popular date in the Palace’s calendar, the event will run differently this year, due to the coronavirus health and safety restrictions.

This Bite-Sized Bowlore on Sunday, August 30, and Monday, August 31, will include: Archery: Mark-draw-loose and armour piercing, hunting arrows, longbow vs crossbow.

Weapons: Quarterstaff and spear, dagger work, percussion weapons (mace, morning star and warhammer), sword and buckler, falchion and langmesser, longswords, shieldwall, pollaxes, halbards, Dane axes.

All of the above will include either demonstrations and/ or choreographed combat, and cutting with a sharp version. In the weapons and armour tent (The Black Dog) there will be displays of blunt weapons, chainmail, helmets and shields.

Members of the Bowlore troupe will be giving interactive Q&A sessions and will also run private sword-fighting lessons at intervals throughout the day.

Medieval camp life will be visible to the public at all times.

The day will be split into two halves, with all the activities being repeated.

All visitors, including Palace members, must book in advance on the Palace website for either the morning (10.15am-1.15pm) or afternoon (1.45pm-4.45pm) session.

Artists look forward to sharing their work HERITAGE Courtyard Studio holders are opening their doors and will be wishing all visitors a warm welcome throughout the weeks of Somerset Art Works.

Rebecca Barnard and Heather Wallace, directors of the gallery and studios in Heritage Courtyard, Sadler Street, Wells, said: “Although we have all experienced a difficult time, our artists are still creating some stunning work and would like to share it with you.

“The gallery will be showcasing a variety of works including ceramics, mixed media, oil painting, cold wax and collage.

“Do pop in and see us but please bring your masks.”

The Grand Opening is Saturday, September 19, and the gallery and studios will be open each day between 11am and 4.30pm, until October 4 (closed on Sundays and Mondays).

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS CIVIC SOCIETY THE last meeting for members of the society was at the beginning of March, when Russell Lillford talked about the Somerset Buildings Preservation Trust and the future of the Bishop’s Barn.

Since then, although we have not been able to meet face to face, many activities have continued behind the scenes and at a ‘suitable distance’.

These include: members of the committee are working together with the city council on the Neighbourhood Plan; lending our support to the museum during its plans for reopening; installing another in the series of Blue Plaques at the City Arms; Ruth Ames-White has made good progress with the Wells in Mosaic project; and we continue to monitor and comment on housing development and other planning applications in the city.

However, the biggest change is inevitably how we keep in touch with members, and to this end we have been working on an improved website. This now has information on all the activities mentioned above and contributions will be very welcome, to keep this as up to date as we can.

We will reconvene as soon as it is safe to do so, but in the meantime check out www. wellscivicsociety.org.uk. WELLS WI WELLS WI members are getting the hang of Zoom now, with 22 members attending our third online meeting.

The first item on the agenda was the closure of Denman, the residential college that has provided courses for WI members for decades. Sadly, it is no longer financially viable, a situation which has only been exacerbated by the current shutdown. Wells WI members tended not to travel to its Oxfordshire location but have been enjoying the online one-hour talks and classes offered during lockdown; very good value at £5. It is hoped that

The pair are fundraising for a project to complete a classroom building that many at the Lions have supported, and were hoping to raise as much money as possible with their cycling marathon towards the target of £7,500. this new method of delivering education will continue even after the college building has been sold.

Our president recommended a Facebook group called WI Wanderers, offering online activities, and reminded people about our Zoom book club meetings, small group walks, and a forthcoming appropriately socially distanced picnic.

Members were invited to submit ideas for what to call the two campaigns that will result from this year’s resolutions: increasing the number of people registered on the UK stem cell registry; and tackling modern slavery.

Our speaker was Steph Hiller, a local therapist with 25 years’ experience. Most of her work is massage, but she is also a reflexologist who offers sensory sounds baths, with a sideline making raw chocolate. Steph showed us how to give ourselves a gentle massage.

We joined in at home, starting by sitting up straight to elongate our spines and focusing on our breathing to calm our minds and let go of thoughts about the outside world. Then Steph demonstrated how to stroke and apply light pressure to our hands and forearms.

We moved on to work on our brows, faces, jaws, temples and ears, slowly and gently, copying Steph’s technique. We all felt much more relaxed after our free self-massages.

involved us guessing how many of us were or had been NHS workers (5), how many had been born abroad (1) and, during lockdown, how many of us had learned a new skill (7), had news of family additions (5 babies), exercised every day (10, mainly dog-related) and how much decorating had been done (an impressive 19 projects).

Committee members are currently undertaking a telephone survey of members, gathering views to help with the planning of future meetings.

Which sounds like a description of certain politicians but here it is in a gardening context.

My father-in-law, always full of garden wisdom, said these were the two basic requirements for successfully growing lilies. Give them these conditions, along with all the other attentions and needs, regular feed and tender care etc etc and they will reward you with a magical display in the summer sunshine. And it works.

Not only that, spring bulbs in garden centres and bulb catalogues are now demanding our attention with all the usual blandishments raising our expectations for next year’s wonderful display. If grown in large pots, a plastic one inside a pottery pot, this conveniently covers the second requirement.

Most lilies need to be planted six inches down and kept watered but not wet. The container can then be shifted around the garden to provide the maximum impact.

There are drawbacks as always in the garden. Once the things start to emerge the Battle of the Lily Beetle starts. These recently arrived, albeit attractive red creatures start off on your fritillaries in early spring and then move on to devastate the lilies. Daily inspection is the only answer. Armed with a plastic container and a very satisfying hammer I set about the task of knocking them off their perch and then doing the business.

Again on the downside I discovered the Beetle’s Revenge in the form of the most ferocious hayfever; lilies have a most wonderful fragrance which can fill the whole garden. But don’t get too close. The pollen on the stamens can also stain.

So now’s the time to think about next year, as if we haven’t been thinking about the future all year. Have a look at our developing website: wellsgarden. club and continue to plant for the future.

n SPORT Club celebrates achievements GOLF

Free offer a hit with key workers TENNIS THIRTY local key workers have signed up for a free summer of tennis thanks to an offer launched by Wells Tennis Club.

In June, the club invited key workers to join the club at no cost for three months.

Now new members include local teachers, health, care and retail workers who have taken up the offer.

New adult members can access five all-weather floodlit courts, two mini-courts and reduced coaching costs.

Currently courts are available for booked singles or doubles play but the club is hopeful that social tennis will return as Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

The offer is still open for free membership until the end of September. To access it key workers should visit wellstc. co.uk. With a membership players are able to book courts

and invite a guest to play with them.

Club chair Dan Cooke said: “It is a small thank you and I’m delighted that 30 have taken up the free offer.

“It is a tough time for all sports but the LTA has helped local clubs and courts prepare to make play as safe and accessible as possible.”

Beata Grochowska-Sikorska is a senior care assistant at Brunel Care Home and Henton Nursing Home. She said: “I heard about the offer from a colleague and joined because I want to improve my physical ability. The last time I played tennis was 30 years ago.

I think the offer is really great for workers as it improves their physical and mental wellbeing.”

Shilen Tanna runs the art department at the Blue School and has joined recently under the key worker scheme. In his junior days he played at a national level and had been looking to get back

into tennis when he moved to the area.

“The offer came at a really useful time for us as a family. It is providing our children more focused space to play and run around with all things considering. I would wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone considering joining,” he said.

Sharon Heeley, LTA head of region for South & South West, said: “Throughout the pandemic, we have seen multiple examples of how the tennis community has come together to support our key workers, and this is another fantastic initiative from Wells Tennis Club. We are delighted that this offer coincides with the start of our national Play Your Way campaign and engagement with local authorities around tennis in parks, both of which will help us work towards our vision of opening up tennis to more and more people.”

Players training in impressive numbers RUGBY THE start of the Community Rugby season was originally scheduled for September, but this has now been put back at least a month. Most people think that it will be put back again, and many are predicting that it could be January before league matches start.

All is not doom and gloom however, training is allowed

under RFU and government guidelines and indeed members at Wells have been back training in impressive numbers for some weeks now.

As the restrictions are gradually relaxed, more and more can be done. Ready4Rugby ten-a-side non-contact games are now allowed in the club environment and if deemed successful during August, inter-club games using the same

format could take place.

Off the field much work has been carried out in the clubhouse with a complete makeover. The facilities were opened early in August when the club held a successful barbecue, bringing very welcome funds. The actual clubhouse was just used as a walk-through for ordering drinks, but it did allow members and guests to see the hard work that had been put in.

DURING the recent lockdown, Mendip Golf Club’s golf professional, Stuart Disney, completed his Director of Golf qualification.

This latest attainment now allows Stuart to take on a more managerial role at Mendip to help drive the golf club forward.

In addition there was further good news for Mendip as the official press release from Golf England shows: “Mendip Golf Club has been awarded a SafeGolf accreditation from England Golf. This award demonstrates the club’s commitment to safeguarding children and young people, as well as adults in risk in the sport of golf.”

The club is seeing a strong increase in Junior golf since Stuart joined Mendip in 2017.

In addition to Stuart’s Saturday Junior Golf Academy, he runs Get into Golf Programmes for adults giving new golfers the confidence to play the game and provides a pathway to club membership.

The recent Men’s Club Championships attracted a full entry of 120, with a further 20 men balloted out. With there being competitions most weekends, now run over two days, these are attracting up to 200 entrants and there continues to be plenty of players playing social golf due to there being no specific tee times allocated to the competitions. A win/win situation.

Game provides good run-out FOOTBALL WELLS City’s First team had their first pre-season game on August 8 away at Shepton Mallet.

They lost 3-1 but it was a good run-out for the players and minutes in the legs after a fivemonth absence.

The season is likely to start in early September depending on circumstances outside of the club’s control.
