Vets put forward plan to build new surgery A VETS practice hopes to build a new surgery at Cathedral Park, Wells, and create 12 jobs in the process.

Shepton Vets has submitted plans to Mendip District Council for a single-storey veterinary practice on land between office buildings used by the Aster Group and Old Mill accountants.

Having grown up in Wells, been a pupil at the Blue School and played football and golf in the city, Martin Law, a director at Shepton Vets, is looking forward to doing something for the community in return.

“I’m passionate about Wells and feel quite bonded to the area,” he said. “Having a vets practice in Wells has been a bit of an aspiration. There are several of us at the practice that have grown up here and been educated in Wells and Shepton and we are all really excited about providing a service, and doing our very best, for the people and pets of Wells.”

Shepton Vets had explored the possibility of moving into one of several existing buildings in Wells, including ones in High Street, Ash Lane, Hawkers Lane and Southover, but none were found to be suitable.

The proposed new building would be clad in pale grey panels with a dark grey metal roof.

There would be space for 17 cars.

Martin said that the two vets practices that already operate in Wells, Westfield Vets in Westfield Road and Axe Valley Vets in St Cuthbert Street, had been informed of the plans, and that Shepton Vets was not trying to compete with them.

He said: “I want to keep a good working relationship with Axe Valley Vets and Westfield Vets. It’s not an aggressive, competitive move. We’ve done some research and there is an

opportunity there, especially with the growth in the area.”

Cathedral Park is being developed by Tincknell Property.

In a letter supporting the application, Diana Tincknell, director of Tincknell Property, said: “It is the perfect opportunity for a local company to expand in a new area and provide its services to the community of Wells.”

If approved, the practice will be built on what Bristol architects’ firm Angus Meek Architects say in their Design and Access Statement has become “leftover space” at Cathedral Park “following an unsuccessful attempt to secure expansion of parking facilities to service the constructed offices. As such its development is seen as a benefit to supplement the anticipated employment development of this half of the site.”

Martin hopes that if all goes smoothly, the new practice will be completed by next summer.

Fundraiser so that sick children can enjoy a Christmas party A WELLS mum is organising a coffee morning at Wells Blue Sports Centre so that children in hospital can enjoy a Christmas party.

Tiff Deacon’s own daughter Esme, aged six, is undergoing treatment for cancer. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month, so Tiff is holding the event to raise awareness as well as raise money to pay for a Christmas party for paediatric oncology patients at Musgrove Park Hospital.

“I funded the party last year with raised funds and we want to do the same again but bigger and

better than last year,” she said.

“There are a lot of children like Ezzy and many much, much worse and they deserve a party.

A lot of the children are unable to go to parties due to poor health or low immunity so this is a party they can go to.”

Linda keen to start board games group BOARD games enthusiast Linda Bird wants to start a group in Wells for people who share her interest. The mother of two is appealing for people to get in touch if they would like to take part in fortnightly sessions of Scrabble, Cluedo, Monopoly and more.

“It doesn’t have to be strictly board games, it could be cards, draughts, or any other game you have sitting in your spare room gathering dust,” said Linda.

“I have always enjoyed board games, and when I had two children I had a great excuse to enjoy many years of Junior Monopoly, cards, dominoes, chess, Mousetrap, and many, many more.

“My daughter soon grew out of them, but my son and myself would spend many hours playing Monopoly on rainy days. Even though he’s grown up now, he’s a real board game enthusiast, and when he and his girlfriend

come to visit, they usually bring a game. So I do get to play a board game occasionally, but nowhere near as much as I would like.”

Linda ran life drawing classes in the area for many years until ill health forced her to give them up. Now she would love to be involved in another group.

“This will be a fun, social group for adults. It is such a sociable activity, isn’t too serious, and allows for chat,” said Linda, whose favourite game is Monopoly.

“As a child I loved the fact that I was given a pile of money, even if it was pretend,” she said.

“It’s so well designed, with the houses and hotels, and the lovely little playing pieces. Everyone has a favourite, whether it’s the iron, the ship, but for me it was the dog.”

n NEWS Wells City Council news for August Water from the wells People often ask us about the water that runs down the High Street; it comes from the springs, or wells, that rise in the grounds of The Bishop’s Palace, and give our city its name. Wells City Council staff help to keep the water flowing; visitors like to see it and it is part of our heritage.

Working in partnership with the Mendip district and Somerset county councils we keep the gullies as clean as possible and clear of green growth; however, this is a natural stream flowing from the moat. We also clean the conduit fountain in the Market Square, part of the old water system. Take care as you step across the stream and do use the grids provided for you to walk on. Please put litter in bins, not in the water.

Model railway displays attract plenty of admirers HUNDREDS of visitors admired the displays and demonstrations at the Railwells model railway exhibition in Wells Town Hall on August 12 and 13.

“People have really enjoyed their time here,” said organiser Chris Challis. “We’ve got some really spectacular layouts and so many people are saying this is a

really good show.”

The show was the 40th to be staged by Wells Railway Fraternity, with proceeds going to the Railway Children charity.

Love of words shared with young ESTABLISHED 25 years ago, the main aim of Wells Festival of Literature was always to provide an opportunity for people to hear and meet a wide variety of authors and to promote the love of words and reading.

But it is only in the last five years that the committee – run entirely by volunteers – has attracted sufficient sponsorship to enable them to commit substantial sums to schools in the area in a variety of different ways.

Each year during the festival, which this year runs from October 13-21, 200 primary school children are invited to an event in the Town Hall with a well-known children’s author.

This year, the project has extended to Glastonbury, where another 200 children will listen to Ross Montgomery, Carnegienominated, Sunday Times ‘Top 100 Modern Children’s Classics’

and shortlisted for Costa and Branford Boase Awards.

The programme for 2017 includes bringing poet Tony Walsh to 21 different schools within Somerset. Joffre White, Steve Voake and rapper/poet Inja, the Two Steves enthralling performance authors, poet AF Harrold and storyteller and actor Chris Connaughton have enthused youngsters of all ages.

The Education Group has enabled schools to take part in the Shakespeare Schools’ Festival with a performance at the Theatre Royal in Bath and has paid for reading projects and books for the CILIP Carnegie Shadowing Scheme, the publication of books containing the winning entries of writing competitions and for Plays in the Playground, a series of performances, workshops and CPD training for two primary

schools. Three years ago, the festival supported the launch of Beanstalk, the children’s reading charity, in the South West and through that, many volunteers are giving precious one-to-one time to reluctant readers, with astonishing results.

All this plus a nine-day gorging on words from authors such as Nick Clegg, Andy Hamilton, Rebecca Fraser, Bp Tomlin, Daisy Goodwin, Fergal Keane and Hollie McNish.

The 25th anniversary is being launched on September 29 when Simon Jenkins will talk about his favourite cathedral from inside his favourite cathedral.

Wells Cemetery On the left as you drive out along Portway, Wells Cemetery dating from 1854 is cared for by the Wells City Council Open Spaces team. There are 15 acres of land to be tended, including the new extension field opened in 2015.

The cemetery is open daily and is a beautiful place for quiet, peaceful contemplation.

City council meetings Weekly council meetings resume in September, all details are on the website www.wells.gov.uk; members of the public are always welcome. We start on Thursday 6th with the City and Tourism Forum 6pm, Planning Committee 7pm. The full council will meet on Thursday, September 28; councillors will be selecting a new member to be coopted onto the council in place of Cllr Chris Briton who sadly died earlier in the year. Town Hall The final major phase in improving our green footprint will be completed during August – refitting the Town Hall function rooms with LED lighting. Cllr Briton was so pleased when he launched this project during his mayoral year.

Classes and clubs will restart at the Town Hall from the beginning of September.

Memorials to ‘extraordinary character’ CHRIS Briton’s family are planning a series of memorials to the former mayor, pantomime Dame and arts, wildlife and cake lover who died earlier this year.

The memorials will celebrate Chris’ life and his belief in the power of the arts to improve people’s lives.

Central to the tributes will be the 641 award, so-called because Chris was the 641st Mayor of Wells.

Students will be invited to submit a portfolio of work, and the winning entrant will be able to choose materials from Paisley & Pilgrim, the new art shop being set up in Wells by fine art restorer Angela Geary.

“Dad was a practising artist and he always had a huge love of the arts,” said Chris’ daughter Molly, who herself trained as a stonemason and has an art studio in Heritage Courtyard.

“He was a real believer that free art for the public could be a force for good.”

With this in mind, 641 will be set up as a charity to raise funds to commission artists to

Dad was not a good cook but once he retired he became interested in learning to bake,” said Molly.

“He did become quite good at baking cakes and scones, and he was Mum’s marmalade assistant.”

Chris wrote, directed and appeared in pantomimes at Wells Little Theatre, and was chairman of the theatre society. He was the first Green Party member to become Mayor of Wells, and was a city councillor for the St Cuthbert’s ward when he died of cancer aged 65, leaving his wife, Sarah, and three children.

In another memorial to him, the city council will buy a native species tree to be planted at the entrance to Durkheim Drive, subject to county council approval. A stone plaque with lettering carved by Molly will be placed by the tree.

New facilities impress visitors WESTFIELD Vets has hailed its Open Day as a huge success.

There were visitors all day long when the practice in Westfield Road, Wells, threw open the doors to its newly refurbished premises and laid on fun events such as a dog show, kids’ quiz and cream teas.

Among other things, visitors were able to see the new surgical equipment and new facilities for cats.

Beryl Fricker said afterwards how impressed she was, and added that it was “great to see the new facilities and everybody having so much fun”.

Discover hidden gems of Wells for free HERITAGE Open Days celebrate England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to places that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. This year there are nine different sites opening their doors in Wells – plus a guided walk and a tour.

And all free of charge.

Wells Heritage Open Days run from Thursday, September 7, to Sunday, September 10. This year’s sites include the Town Hall, Museum, Old Deanery and Gardens, Bishop’s Barn, Almshouses, St Cuthbert’s Church, Wells United Church, and Mendip Hospital Cemetery and Chapel. Many of these sites are offering tours and displays.

The Bishop’s Palace is offering a Water Walk and Wells Walking Tours is laying on a heritage tour of South Wells.

Opening hours vary over the four days and booking is required for some events, so check the programme (available around the city and at the Visitor Information Service at Wells Museum) or visit the Wells Heritage Open Days website at www.hodswellssomerset.com.

Visitors will be able to see a new, specially-created display called Cage, Cowhouse and Clink: Prisons of Wells from Medieval Times to the Present Day. There have been nine prisons in Wells during this period. Many people know about the gaol in the City Arms, but what about the one in the Shambles, and those known as Little Ease, The Cage and The Cowhouse?

Wells Railway Fraternity will also be exhibiting on September 9; Richard Green will be presenting a display about the Wells Charter Fairs and the recent images that have come to light; and evocative images from local historic postcards will be on display. For the fourth year running, Wells Civic Society is loaning panoramic photos of the streets of Wells. For children, the city archivist has created a ‘Children’s Quiz and Trail round the Town Hall’.

the Reformation, they were rediscovered as recently as 1848.

Because they were hidden for so long, much of their medieval paint has survived intact, offering a unique glimpse into the richly decorated medieval church interior.

A recent investigation into the altarpieces and the fragments, one of which is shown below, gave us much more information about these treasures and the findings of the project work will be presented in a series of special tours in the church.

During Heritage Open Days there will be an opportunity to find out more about this unique part of the history of Wells through displays and talks. There will also be fun and creative activities for families to explore the hidden histories of the church.

The Old Deanery and Garden The Old Deanery, at No 9, Cathedral Green, and garden will be open to the public on September 9 between 10am and 4pm.

The garden was associated with Dean William Turner in the 16th century and recently volunteers have been working to create a garden, in Tudor style, growing the sort of plants that he would have known. William Turner has been called the “Father of English Botany” and is known for his Herball, written

in English describing plants and their medicinal uses.

Medical herbalist Barbara Lewis and former archivist Frances Neale will be guiding walks around the garden during which modern uses of medicinal herbs will be compared with 16th century uses as described

by William Turner. Entry to the garden is free.

City of Wells Almshouses The City of Wells Almshouses will be open on September 9 between 11am and 4pm on the Bubwith and Llewellyns sites.

There will be refreshments with home-baked cakes at Bubwith and a plant sale at Llewellyns.

A ukulele band will be playing between 2pm and 3pm in the Bubwith chapel.

Bid to keep coach visitors for longer A CONCERTED effort is being made to encourage coach visitors to Wells to stay for longer – and therefore to spend more.

The City & Tourism Forum is working with Visit by Coach on a project to improve every aspect of group travel within Wells.

Key to the plan is persuading coach operators to drop off visitors to Wells at the bus station coach park instead of Sadler Street.

The coach park area is to be made more attractive and meet and greet teams will be on hand to welcome visitors.

“The aim of the project is to bring more groups to Wells and to make the stays longer,” said Visit by Coach director Ian Jefferies.

“In a survey carried out in 2016 by Visit by Coach, 83 per cent of passengers stated they wished their stay in Wells was longer. We are now working with group travel organisers and coach operators to ensure the passengers get what they want.

From the city’s point of view, this

is fantastic, as spend per head increases as the stay increases.”

Chamber of commerce chairman Robert Powell says dropping off and picking up passengers in Sadler Street means that many never venture down the High Street.

“They are losing the experience of Wells,” he said, adding that a loss of potential customers for shops and cafes was not good for the economic wellbeing of Wells either.

More planters are planned to make the coach park more visually appealing, and meet and greet team members, in ‘Welcome Crew’ tabards, will hand out maps and discount coupons. A pilot scheme should be in place in September, and fully operational by the time the new tourist season starts next year. Signs will also be altered to direct coaches primarily to the bus station – though the Sadler Street drop-off bay will still be available for disabled passengers or schoolchildren.

Chalets one idea to create more ‘Christmassy’ Christmas market THIS year’s Christmas market in Wells could see brightly lit chalets decorated with holly and tinsel lining the Market Place.

Wells City Council and Mendip District Council have been discussing ideas to make the 2017 event, from December 20-23, bigger and better than a similar event held last year.

This year, inspiration is being taken from Bath’s hugely popular Christmas market, where chalets festooned in festive decorations fill the city centre.

The four-day market in Wells could even be extended from the Market Place to the Cathedral Green and through the Bishop’s Eye. There have also been discussions about setting up an ice rink – though this would need full commercial sponsorship to cover the costs.

A city council spokesperson

said: “Wells City Council is working with the Mendip District Council market manager to develop the Wells Christmas Market for 2017. The Cathedral and Bishop’s Palace have been consulted and came up with some exciting new ideas. We are keen to respond to feedback from last year and ensure a more ‘Christmassy’ theme. Any music groups or choirs wanting an opportunity to showcase their talent in the open air should contact the market manager with a listing of their seasonal programme.”

A Mendip District Council spokesman said: “After the success of last year’s Extra Days of Christmas, Mendip District Council are holding a Wells Christmas Market on December 20-23, 2017. This market will be bigger and better than the usual markets with additional festive decorations and music.”

If we increase the stay time this spend grows and therefore so does the money into the economy.

“If we can encourage the visitors into all the shops, then we have a strong business centre to the city. A healthy business centre gives jobs to the locals, a vibrant city centre and raises the whole feelgood factor about the destination. How many city

and town centres nowadays have multiple boarded up shops? We aim to assist in this not being the case in Wells.”

A city council spokesperson said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with local groups and Visit by Coach to facilitate progressing the project through council procedures.”

The meet and greet teams will be made up of people from various charities and volunteers.

‘Astonishing outcomes’ at Blue SIXTH-FORM students at The Blue School continue to excel with another year of fantastic and life-changing A-level results.

A remarkable 45% of all A-level grades were achieved at A* or A which is up another 7% on last year. 84% of all A-level grades were achieved at A* to C. The average grade achieved in all A-levels is equivalent to a B. The average grade in BTEC subjects is one point off the equivalent of an A. BTEC students held on to the amazing record of exceptional performance with over 76% of all BTEC grades achieved at Distinction or higher. BTEC Sport students recorded stunning results with almost all students attaining the equivalent of three Distinction* grades.

The following students attained at least four A grades at AS-level: Eesa Ali, Oscar Evans, Luke Moule, Louis Newstead, Ethan Shepherd and Rebecca Taylor.

The Blue School said it was once again pleased to applaud all students on achieving such excellent results and, with their next steps secured, wished them all the very best for the future.

GCSE and BTEC results at The Blue School show students continue to perform well, especially in the core subjects.

Seventy three per cent of students achieved a standard pass (Grade 4) in both English and mathematics. 51% achieved a strong pass (Grade 5) in both English and mathematics.

Under the old performance measure, 70% of the school’s students achieved 5 or more A* to C grades including English and mathematics.

Headteacher Steve Jackson said: “We are particularly pleased with the performance of students in the new GCSEs where the results have held up despite significant changes to the curriculum and assessment this year.

“This is another pleasing set of results where students of all abilities have cause to celebrate their many achievements.”

Particular high fliers who achieved the equivalent of more than 6 A*s include: Roberta Bland, Jasmine Brandon, Maddi Ferguson, Freya Gautier, Elliot Hunt, Rosie Jones, Georgina Mardle, Lottie Mason, Loveday Reynolds, Heather Russell, Jack Shaw, Duncan Warnock and Eloise Yeadon Caiger.

Some of the students who achieved the highest levels of progress over the five years include: Roberta Bland, Harriet Chinn, James Frost, Rona Jamieson, Rachel Lee, Jack Lukins, Cammie Main, Shareigh Phipps, Holly Stephens-Raven and Lauren Wyatt.

Farewell to some long-serving staff THE Blue School said farewell to several members of staff at the end of the summer term.

Steve Jackson retired after 18 years as headteacher and the previous 10 years as deputy headteacher.

The school also said goodbye to three other long-serving members of staff this summer.

Dave Hopkin joined the school in 1993 as head of English and was promoted to deputy headteacher in 2001. Roger Walton-Freeman spent 25 years working in the school running the Geology Department, and Gill Lonnia

WITH the best ever high grades achieved at Strode College for A-levels and advanced level vocational qualifications, and another outstanding set of results, students and staff have plenty to celebrate.

Three hundred and eighteen students completed A-levels (806 entries) at Strode this year. 24% of entries gained high grades of A* and A (national average 26.3%), 57% gained high grades of A* to B and 82% gained A*-C. The overall pass rate was 99% (national average 97.9%) and 32 of Strode’s A-level subjects achieved 100% pass rate.

These high levels of achievement have also been achieved in the new, harder linear A-levels. 55% (440 entries) of A-level entries were studying these new linear A-levels. 28% of entries gained high grades of A* and A (national average 24.3%) and 60% gained high grades of

Celebrations at Cathedral School STUDENTS at Wells Cathedral School had much to celebrate with a very strong set of A-level results achieved by this year’s cohort.

The overall pass rate for the 109 candidates was 99.1 per cent, with over three quarters achieving grades A* to B; nearly 50 per cent achieving grades A* to A (compared to a national average figure of 26 per cent); and almost 20 per cent gaining the top A* grade.

Over a quarter of pupils achieved all A* and A grades, and nearly half the entrants achieved two or more A* and A grades.

Nine students achieved three or more A* grades, including Emilie Colliar, Orlando Fraser from Wookey Hole, Gemma Gordon from Wells, Kaia Nisser from Oakhill, Oliver Passey from Chewton Mendip, Nicole Pellizzon, and Daria Rozhnova.

Thomas Matthews from Wells and Benjamin Richards both achieved four A* grades.

Over 90 per cent of Wells students have achieved the grades required to go on to one of the universities of their choice.

Many of this year’s Year 13 will continue with their musical studies at the country’s internationally famous music colleges, where a record number have won significant scholarships. More than one third of the candidates have specialised in music during their sixth form years and have had to successfully juggle academic work with intensive music programmes and long hours of practice. Of particular mention, with multiple scholarships, are Laura Cooper, Edgar Francis, Adam Heron, Osian Jones, Phoebe Lu, Ashby Mayes, Gwyneth Nelmes, James Thomas from Somerton, Zoe Tweed from Wells and Poppy Webb-Taylor from Wellington; Peter Wilson from Winscombe has been offered a place to go straight into the second year of the prestigious

Guildhall Jazz BMus course.

Wells’ results have been very good indeed across a wide variety of subjects this year, with exceptional results in English, the sciences, mathematics and history.

Students who took part in the Extended Project Qualification achieved strong results, with over a third gaining the top two grades for this rigorous assessment, where pupils have learnt the skills of research, analysis and presentation.

Principal Elizabeth Cairncross said: “Many of our students have worked for and achieved top grades; others have worked hard and achieved results of which they and we are also very proud.

Their families and our staff have all contributed unrelentingly and with great commitment; it was, however, the students who sat the exams and have provided themselves with a springboard to the next stage of their studies and their lives.’’

PUPILS at Wells Cathedral School celebrated impressive GCSE results with the top A* grade awarded for over a quarter of all examinations taken by the students. Over half achieved A* to A grades, with almost 80 per cent of all grades achieved by Wells students A* to B grades.

The pass rate was 99.9 per cent.

Molly Hall from Litton achieved 11 A* grades, whilst Susanna Mackay and Catherine Stringer from Wells, both students who have focused on their instrumental music, received 10 A* grades.

A quarter of this year’s cohort achieved at least nine A* and A grades, with ten students awarded a full complement of A* and A grades, including Jane Lee and Madeleine Perring from Westbury-sub-Mendip.

Angus Lo was awarded 10 A* grades and a B; Alasdair Padgett from Wells 9 A* grades, an A and a B; Alanna Tibbs from Wells, 8 A*s, an A and a B; and Maxim Cooper from Wookey Hole 5 A*s, 5As and a B. Principal Elizabeth Cairncross said: “Of course we’re proud of all this significant achievement.”

New administrator appointed A NEW administrator is joining Wells Cathedral this month.

Jackie Croft will take up the post on September 25.

The cathedral administrator plays an important role in the life of the cathedral as its senior administrative and financial officer, charged with advising the Chapter, co-ordinating operations and being one of the cathedral’s leading ambassadors in the city and county.

Jackie is currently the cathedral administrator at Lincoln Cathedral, a position she has held for three years.

Before Lincoln Jackie held the administrator role at Derby Cathedral and she confesses that it was a love of cathedrals that persuaded her to leave a successful career in industry, lastly as a human resources director at Rolls-Royce.

Looking forward to her new role, Jackie said: “I’m delighted to be joining Wells as the

WHAT will it take to persuade all motorists to drive with consideration towards other road users? Perhaps the death of a child, a life-changing injury, or just the fear of being out on the roads?

Some people think they are safe, even entitled, to drive over the speed limit, even on narrow, winding roads after rain and even outside schools when children are arriving or leaving. Others believe they can overtake in the town centre or on blind corners in the countryside.

Driving without due attention to the safety of others appears to be increasingly prevalent in and around Wells.

Of particular concern is the stretch of road on the B3139 between West Horrington and South Horrington which winds down the hill to the junction of Bath Road and Old Frome Road.

There is an accident black spot within the 30mph zone just below Horrington Primary School. During the last couple of years alone there have been a large number of accidents in the same spot all caused by speed.

Often cars end up mounting the very narrow pavement which is used by school children and their parents, encouraged to walk to school for environmental and health reasons. Almost every week car debris from unrecorded incidents can be found in and around the hedgerows.

At weekends, this particular stretch of the B3139 sometimes resembles a race track with motorbikes exceeding the national speed limit.

In an attempt to reduce speeding in our villages, local, voluntary Community Speedwatch teams have been set up and can be seen several times a week at the roadside recording vehicle speeds.

The presence of one of these teams or the attendance of a police officer is largely effective, drivers slow down and then flash their lights as a warning to oncoming traffic to do likewise.

However, speeds rise again almost immediately after the high viz jackets have gone.

Fresh calls for traffic calming measures

Dulcote residents have been campaigning to make the road safer for years.

Councillor David Fothergill said in February that he would ask the police to support lowering the speed limit through Dulcote to 30mph and consider putting ‘SLOW’ markings on the road.

He added that it could take

up to 12 months for this to be implemented.

The crash happened on the stretch of road that residents have to cross to get to the playground or cycle path, but where there is no safe place to do so. It is not possible to see what is coming round the bend from either direction.

Residents would like the speed limit of 40mph lowered but do not think this alone is

sufficient as there will still be no safe place to cross the road.

Glen Collins, who lives opposite the crash site, said: “A chicane might be the best thing to slow the traffic down or another option that would give us a safe place to cross. The speed limit needs to be 30mph and we need somewhere to cross the road. There must be a solution.”

Lowering the speed limit and making the Dulcote road safer to cross was voted top priority at a Wells PACT meeting several years ago. However, no changes have been made so far.

Zoe Hummerstone, who lives in Dulcote with her husband and five children, said: “My neighbour’s car was written off when someone drove into it speeding through the village. It was parked outside her house.

It’s not just people in the village who are affected, it’s anyone using the cycle track or footpaths from Wells.”

RESIDENTS have stepped up their calls for traffic calming and a safe place to cross after a headon collision in Dulcote.

Neighbours ran to help when two cars crashed on the Dulcote road just before 7pm on July 25.

Fire crews made the vehicles safe and both drivers were taken to the RUH, Bath, to be treated for their injuries.

Tamzin Hummerstone of Dulcote said: “Everyone in Dulcote knows about the bend by the fountain and what a dangerous place it is to cross the road. I bet plenty of people are thinking it was only a matter of time before an accident had to happen there, considering the lenient speed limit (40mph).

“The fact that there is only pavement on one side of the road in Dulcote means that most people have to cross at this spot to get to the park or the cycle track. The families and children here should feel safe where they

Man in green part of fabric of community The spotlight this month is on Wells’ Town Crier, Len Sweales AWARD winning, theatre credit bearing, man of our city Len Sweales, our Town Crier and all round legend, has graced our streets for 17 years now.

Along the way he has won awards for his efforts including ‘Best Cry Content’ and ‘Best Dressed’ as well as winning the Town Crier Championship in Mells.

We may take him for granted but without him you would feel Wells Market was missing its sparkle. Whether it’s taking a cheeky selfie with him or hearing his rhythmic cries across the square, it is fair to say Len has fully established himself as a vital component in our community.

It isn’t just market day you can see him either, for Len is also

part of our ceremonial traditions often witnessed at the Town Hall or even at St Cuthbert’s Church, he is there providing his usual chirpy conversation and welcoming personality.

A fond history surrounds the Town Crier, his green robes are a part of a clause made way back in 1662 where upon receipt of his wages, the Town Crier was also to receive ‘a good green great coat’, something that even some hundreds of years later is still an important tradition to maintain.

It also meant his attire was in keeping with the green robes worn by the sergeants at mace, known to most of us as the mace bearers.

You often see these people walking at the head of a council procession, leading the way and wearing little black hats, a little like that of a pirate but

with less of the attitude. Records also dated from this time show the delivery of the bell to the bellman.

A WORKING group is trying to locate a suitable site for new offices for Diocese of Bath and Wells staff if The Old Deanery on Cathedral Green is sold.

Bishop’s Council, the Bishop of Bath and Wells’ advisory body, has recommended selling the historic building rather than spend millions of pounds on upkeep and improvements.

“It is becoming increasingly clear that an 800-year-old, Grade I listed building, originally built as a home for the Dean of Wells, does not function effectively as a modern, welcoming, office and meeting space,” said Diocesan Secretary Nick May, who chairs the working group.

“We calculate that to bring The Old Deanery up to the standard required would cost

£3m, plus months of disruption.

The cost of moving to a purposebuilt development is estimated at £3.25m. We strongly feel that relocation is a more responsible and sustainable use of diocesan funds and will help us better serve our 500 parishes.”

The decision is currently a decision in principle that will be considered again by Bishop’s Council based on a progress report due later this year.

The diocese has said that public access, the historical significance and the fondness in which The Old Deanery is held for many local people are all factors that will be considered in this next, more detailed stage of planning, and that it is committed to ensuring any sale is approached and handled sensitively.

Church undergoing major transformation AN ambitious project to modernise facilities at a Wells church and open it up to the community is well on the way to completion.

The £460,000 refurbishment programme aims to bring the Victorian Gothic St Thomas’ Church – built in 1857 – into the 21st century.

A new social area with underfloor heating is being created at the back of the church, in St Thomas’ Street, with moveable benches that can be put out as needed.

There will be a wheelchair ramp leading up to the altar, and the floor of the tower room is being levelled.

An extension is also being added to incorporate a new community room, new toilets, and an area for preparing the flowers that decorate the church.

“It’s quite complicated.

all over the place,” said Clifford Fountaine, a churchwarden and chairman of the Development Committee.

“I’m down here very regularly to see how it’s coming on.”

The work, which started last December and is due to be completed this October, is being overseen by D’Ovidio Bros of Wells. The plans were drawn up by another Wells firm, Alan & Ann Thomas Architects. Wells Cathedral Stonemasons are ensuring that the stonework of the extension matches that of the original.

When work is completed, Clifford hopes that people living nearby will drop in regularly for coffee and companionship.

“We are keen to use the church more during the week,”

he said. “We are hoping we can make it something of a community centre for people in the parish, to draw people into the church and all that we stand for.

“It’s important that we use our building for the benefit of everybody.”

Money to pay for the work has come from grants and donations from members of the church. A loan has been raised to complete the work but further funds will need to be raised.

The completion of the project will be celebrated at a special service of dedication led by the Bishop of Bath & Wells, the Rt Rev Peter Hancock, on Sunday, November 26, at 10am.

“That will be a day of great rejoicing,” said Clifford.

Fundraisers on the bikes set up outside Wells Sport & Fitness Centre

Spinathon raises more than £9,500

A FUNDRAISING spinathon has made more than £9,500.

Rachel Rostron and Keisha Padfield organised the event at Wells Sport & Fitness Centre to raise money for charities that have a special meaning for them.

Fifty cyclists took part in the spinathon, with 13 of them, including Rachel, keeping going for all 12 hours.

“I’d like to say a massive thanks to everyone who bought a bike whether for one hour or all 12, everyone who very kindly and generously donated amazing raffle and auction prizes, our sponsor for the event Majestic Designs of Cheddar, and to every single person that sponsored us, bought raffle tickets, bid in the auction or just put money into the tubs on the day,” she said.

Rachel also thanked Amanda Baldwin and Sally Frampton, who gave up their time to massage the spinners’ weary legs, and Simon Brenton at James Store who printed special T-shirts for participants.

Cakes were on sale at a stall outside the sport centre, there was a facepainter for children, as well as an evening barbecue at the rugby club and live music from Parfanon Rock.

The money raised will be split between Southmead Hospital, which cared for Keisha’s father Daren before he died after being knocked down by a car in Wells, and Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens. Esme Deacon, a Wells girl that Rachel taught to swim, is currently being treated for cancer.

Work going on to stop individual reoffending

A LOCAL man has been issued with a Community Protection Warning for his anti-social behaviour within the city.

The warning instructs him: n Not to enter licensed premises within Wells. n Not to enter Wells City Centre between 1200hrs – 2200hrs. n Not to enter any of the supermarkets in Wells. n Not to shout and swear at members of the public in Wells.

Over the last few months this individual’s behaviour has been affecting more and more people, from shopkeepers, landlords and market traders to ordinary members of the public, and visitors to our city.

He would be verbally aggressive and very animated in his body movement, becoming more and more unpredictable; he was committing anti-social behaviour, minor thefts and criminal damage on a daily basis,

and he was arrested several times during this period.

We have engaged with our partner agencies from the local mental health team as it was clear that punishment alone was not going to stop the male's offending, and together we are working with this individual in order to try and prevent him from committing further offences in the future.

As your local beat team we are committed to dealing with complaints of Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB), and the Community Protection Warnings (CPW) and Community Protection Notice (CPN) are just a couple of the tools we can use in order to solve the problem.

Please let us know if you are a victim of ASB, you may not be the only person suffering from these incidents, if you do not inform us we are unaware it is happening.

Business unit sold RMW Knight Chartered Surveyors have sold The Firs, Underwood Business Park, in Wells to footwear and fashion brand distribution company Skape, currently based at Keward Court.

Since 2008 the property has been the HQ of online seller of children’s toys and models Jadlam Racing Models, who have moved to Glastonbury.

The Tourist Information Centre in Wells and Mendip Museum

Tourist centre is a welcoming place with wide range of information for visitors AS a volunteer at the Wells Tourist Information Centre (TIC), I must take issue with your correspondent Shirley Fulwell (“Give us decent tourist information office”, Letters, August).

Far from being ‘just a table in the museum’, the TIC, as can be seen from the picture above, is a welcoming place, well-stocked with leaflets, maps and guides, and with enthusiastic volunteers more than willing to provide advice and information to visitors to Wells.

All of this is delivered despite the TIC receiving minimal funding.

Recent visitor surveys have affirmed repeatedly that the service which they have received from the TIC has been of the highest standard. Indeed, one visitor marked the quality of welcome and information provision as 6 on a scale of 1 to 5!

It was unfortunate that Wells did not make the short-list in its City of Culture bid, but to blame, even in part, the TIC, is unfair.

RESEARCHERS at the University of Bristol are calling on 24- to 26-year-olds living in Wells to take part in one of the most detailed health studies of its kind in the world.

The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (also known as Children of the 90s) is an internationally renowned research study, following the health and development of more than 14,000 families with a child born in Bristol and the surrounding area between April 1991 and December 1992.

Researchers have used the data collected over the last 25 years to help answer important questions on key health issues, including asthma, childhood obesity, and dementia.

Almost 4,000 young people have already attended the most recent data collection clinic, Focus@24+, and taken part in a series of cutting-edge tests, including blood pressure, liver and lung function checks.

Now, with the Focus@24+ clinics drawing to a close this autumn, the Children of the 90s team is keen to hear from anyone

living in Wells who was born in or around the city in 1991/2 and would like to play their part in building an even more detailed picture of the health of their generation.

Range of venues showcase visual arts SOMERSET Art Weeks is the unique celebration of visual arts in Somerset.

Alternating between open studios and festival years, Somerset Art Weeks is now firmly established as one of the biggest showcases celebrating the visual arts in the South West. With over 350 artists in 120 venues for 16 days of this autumn’s festival, taking place from September 23 to October 8, many venues have embraced the theme ‘Prospect’ in their shows and events.

Somerset Art Works continues to support the arts in Somerset and facilitate exciting, challenging and inspiring artwork with a curated programme of commissions and partner projects all of which place art in the heart of the community.

Visitors can expect to be inspired and surprised by experiencing art in a variety of unusual and special locations with the opportunity to take part in workshops, activities and talks. The vast majority of the festival is free to attend.

Visitors welcome at studios HERITAGE Courtyard Studios is a unique facility in the heart of Wells, for artists and art lovers alike, incorporating a light and spacious contemporary art gallery, an educational space and ten artists’ studios.

Mark back to jazz up Sunday lunchtime RISING international jazz piano star, Mark Pringle, will be back on his home patch on October 1 for a Sunday lunchtime gig hosted by Wells Jazz Collective.

The former Blue School and Strode student has spent the last two years working in European capitals. He describes the three musicians touring with him as some of the best young players he’s encountered in Europe.

“This collaborative European quartet has been brought together especially for the UK tour this autumn,” said Mark.

“Consisting of musicians from the UK, Sweden and Portugal, the group’s original compositions take influence from the Berlin creative music scenes, Scandinavian folksongs and swing.”

Before leaving Wells to study in the UK and Europe, Mark, aged 26, was a regular at Wells Jazz Collective sessions, now held at The Venue in South Street on the third Monday of every month. They were set up to help jazz players of all ages and abilities gain essential experience in performing with other musicians before a live audience.

Wells Jazz Collective coordinator Paul Cannon said that Mark’s return comes at a time when the local jazz scene is flourishing.

“In the last year or so we have formed a very productive relationship with Paul and Mel

Students from the school and members of the Wells Jazz Collective now play together at some sessions.

The school’s head of jazz, Edward Leaker, said: “It’s absolutely the most important thing for young jazz musicians.

They need to be able to play with experienced people.”

The Mark Pringle Quartet will be performing at the Bocabar, Glastonbury, at 1 pm on Sunday, October 1. Before the gig the players will be talking about their work, demonstrating some of their techniques and taking questions from the audience.

Tickets are £10 on the door.

Ahead of that date, Mark will be perfoming at The Royal Oak, Swindon, on September 5, and The Bebop Club, Bristol, on September 29.

In his first official duty as the club’s new President, Paul Clegg led a visit by members to Charlton Farm in North Somerset, just outside Bristol, which provides hospice care for children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Paul said: “Our support for this brilliant charity will continue next year. We’re planning another of our popular concerts at St Cuthbert’s Church in March, with Bristol Male Voice Choir who will be celebrating their 50th year. We’re also planning a charity dinner in partnership with The Swan Hotel, in February. Our target from these special events is £5,000 for Children’s Hospice South West.”

WELLS TWINNING ASSOCIATION ON Thursday, July 27, Richard Hibberd, chairman, Bob Reynolds, treasurer, and Dawn Payne, secretary, represented Wells Twinning Association at the full Wells City Council meeting to make a presentation on the past, present and future of town twinning as perceived by Wells Twinning Association.

Wells Twinning Association has noticed changes in the way twinning is viewed by our twin towns, and felt that it would be beneficial to present to the city council how twinning has functioned historically and how the association viewed changes necessary for it to continue successfully. Richard delivered the presentation, extracts from which are printed here.

Wells’ first twinning arrangement was entered into with Paray-le-Monial following a casual holiday visit of Wells citizens including Wells city councillors to that town. A charter was signed in 1979

formally linking the City of Wells and the town of Paray-le-Monial.

Five years later Wells signed a similar charter with Bad Durkheim in Germany, which was already twinned with Parayle-Monial After a number of attempts the council set up the current twinning association with a constitution that was approved in 1988. The Mayor of Wells has been the president of the twinning association from its inception and still is. Wells City Council also appoints one of its members to sit on the twinning association committee as a full voting member. Initially the city council made a substantial grant towards the running costs of the twinning association but this was withdrawn some years ago. WTA currently raises all the funding required to run twinning visits from social activities in the community.

In 2010 the council signed two friendship agreements, the first with a small German town of Bad Berka and the second with Kluczbork in Poland. There has been no contact between Bad Berka and Wells officially since the agreement was signed.

However, Kluczbork in Poland has visited Wells and we have visited them. Kluczbork actually believes that it is twinned with Wells.

In 2012 the city twinned with the Comune Di Fontanellato near Parma in Italy.

WTA arranged to visit Paray-le-Monial from August 22-28 this year. The major intention behind this visit was to rekindle enthusiasm and rebuild the relationship which has lapsed recently. A party of 26 Wellensians including the mayor, the deputy mayor and Councillor Price were due to take part in this visit.

During their visit to Wells on June 16, Bad Durkheim committee members expressed strong dissatisfaction with the state of the relationship at present, particularly the lack of community involvement, interchange between the two communities and poor connection between the two councils. The Mayor of Wells has issued an invitation to the Mayor of Bad Durkheim to visit Wells for this year’s carnival. This has been accepted.

Fontanellato is very concerned as to how Brexit will impact upon their twinning activity as they rely on the EU for all their twinning funding. They feel that we do not co-operate with them in terms of developing trade and commerce between the two towns.

In recent years membership of Wells Twinning Association has been diminishing. However, in recent months a noticeable increase has become apparent.

Paid up membership now stands at 101. Membership costs £10 per annum per couple and £6 for individuals.

Wells Twinning Association has formed a new committee comprised of a mixture of experienced twinners and new members with a view to returning to the original objectives of the twinning charters involving the whole community under the leadership of Wells City Council, with the twinning association organising, administering and communicating activities.

A delegation will visit Bad Durkheim, from September 8-10, to attend the Wurstmarkt, including our mayor and the chairman of Wells Twinning Association.

The mayor agreed to set up a joint project team to shape future twinning policy and plan future twinning programmes.

At the hub is the commitment and means to develop effective relationships between people and organisations to make a difference in Wells and beyond.

Community Outreach Community Outreach is supporting change in people challenged by complex and multiple needs – such as homelessness, addiction, mental health or other life-controlling issues. We work with key organisations across Mendip to enable fast and effective access to a wide range of services. We also run the only direct access accommodation based in Mendip for rough sleepers. Dairy House provides up to two short-term assessment beds and four premove-on beds to help Mendip citizens on their journey to sustainable accommodation.

We also have youth groups, including a youth club every Friday evening during term time, a community lunch every Wednesday, counselling, church groups and a service every Sunday.

Hayden on upward trajectory after signing for race team PROMISING cyclist Hayden Allen has taken the next step on his cycling journey by joining a race team for the 2018 campaign.

The 23-year-old, from Wells, has signed for THRE (Train Hard Race Easy) Datawolves and will now receive financial support while taking part in events around the country.

“I have always enjoyed riding a bike,” said former Blue School pupil Hayden, who is currently studying for a PhD at Leeds Beckett University investigating exercise-induced asthma in endurance athletes.

“As a child I used to ride around the lanes of Burcott with the family, and then as I grew older it was more about doing ‘skids’ with my friends, but I never considered it as a sport.

“My main sport growing up was basketball which I played all the way through to my Masters year of university.

As basketball stagnated, my university housemates suggested going on a cycling trip in Europe.

I didn’t even have a road bike but I bought one and trained for our ride from Barcelona to Montpellier.

“Training for the trip presented a new challenge and I was quite quickly hooked.

Upon moving to Leeds I joined and raced for the AlbaRosa cycling club, to whom I owe many thanks. Now at the end of my first season, my passion for cycling seems to be increasing week on week.”

Hayden was snapped up

by Yorkshire-based THRE Datawolves after sending the team manager his impressive CV containing a summary of all his results in 2017 along with his fitness testing data.

“I’ve always dreamt of being an athlete. Unfortunately given my build and height I was never cut out for basketball but cycling seems to suit me better,” said Hayden.

“As a physiology PhD student, I’ve had the opportunity to conduct a lot of fitness testing, which has highlighted some great potential, but to reach the top I need to combine this with race craft that I’m constantly learning.

Cyclist Hayden Allen in action I’d love to race full-time one day, but I’m not getting ahead of myself at this stage. I’ll just continue working as hard as I can on the bike and see what comes.”

He trains for 12-15 hours a week, covering 350km to 450km.

Some days will be longer, easier rides, and others hard interval sessions. Hayden also takes great care with his diet.

“It’s not possible to do the amount of quality training necessary to succeed without a good diet,” he said.

“Exercise physiology and nutrition go hand in hand, and I read the science around nutrition for endurance performance in my spare time. In general, I’ll eat a lot of complex carbohydrates, such as oats, rice and pasta, along with a lot of legumes, vegetables and fruit. Protein is also essential for recovery and adaptation to training.”

When he is back in Wells, there is nothing Hayden likes more than getting out on his bike to revisit some of his favourite routes.

“Wells is such a good base for training as you’ve got the Mendips one side and the Somerset Levels the other,” he said.

“My favourite climb is without a doubt Cheddar Gorge.

Most times I am home I’ll go for an all-out effort up the gorge, and use it as a test to see if I am making improvements.

Currently I’m the 10th all-time fastest person up there on Strava (an app that records your ride using GPS).

“Following closely behind the gorge is the lesser known, but equally spectacular climb, Burrington Combe. Similar in length and gradient, it’s also a cracker.

“To be honest most of the Mendip hills are great for training. If I don’t fancy hills, my go-to two-hour flat loop from Wells encompasses Wedmore, Mark, Woolavington, the back road through to Shapwick and then on to Meare and Glastonbury and back into Wells.

“I’m spoilt with the road offerings of the Yorkshire Dales for most of the year, but I always look forward to returning to Wells to thrash around the Mendips, whether it’s just for the weekend or longer breaks around Easter and Christmas.”

n NEWS Certificate marks renewal of city’s Fairtrade status WELLS has retained its status as a Fairtrade city. It recently received its renewed status certificate and this has been framed and is hanging in the Town Hall.

Wells has had the status of a Fairtrade city since July 2002.

Every two years since it has been renewed with the Fairtrade Foundation, an independent, non-profit organisation set up in 1992 working to secure a better deal for farmers and workers in developing countries.

To gain the renewal status entails setting out what has been achieved in the previous two years and what action plans are in place for the next two years.

The Wells Fairtrade steering group make constant checks to ensure businesses in the city are continuing to use Fairtrade goods: cafes and restaurants are using Fairtrade coffee, tea and sugar; supermarkets are selling Fairtrade goods; and Fairtrade goods are being used by schools, churches and businesses where possible.

Wells Fairtrade group try to have a presence at various locals events each year including stalls at the Moat Boat Race, the May Fair, One World Fair in the Town Hall and special events during Fairtrade Fortnight which takes place across the country during late February and early March, when Fairtrade goods are for sale and a variety of literature tells the Fairtrade story.

There is always need for volunteers to join the group in however small a capacity.

Open Day at learning centre SOMERSET Skills & Learning (SS&L) are holding an Open Day at their base in Portway Avenue, Wells, on September 8 from noon-6pm.

SS&L are a local training provider offering a range of leisure and qualification courses.

There will be demonstrations and exhibitions, as well as a 10% reduction on enrolment fees on the day and the chance to win a free course in the draw.
