The award of £194,600 is for the museum’s Search & Learn project

Lottery funding for revamp at museum WELLS & Mendip Museum will be able to carry out refurbishment work and install new displays after being awarded nearly £200,000 by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The museum, on Cathedral Green, has received the funding for its Search & Learn project.

This was the motto of the museum’s founder, Herbert Balch, and is now the title of a project to both reinvigorate and retell the social stories of Wells.

It marks a step change in how the museum tells those stories and includes refurbishment of two galleries, restoration of Balch’s study, and the installation of new displays and interactives.

Alongside this will be a vibrant activities programme, and the opportunity to work with new and existing partners.

The award is of £194,600 towards a £300,000 project.

Chairperson, said: “Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, I’m excited that we can now begin to implement our long-nurtured plans for updating our exhibition spaces, strengthening our local partnerships and developing our offer to the varied communities of the city.”

David Walker, the museum’s Curator, said: “We are so pleased to be able to work on a project that does justice to the city’s rich social history.”

Herbert Balch was an archaeologist and caver who was born in Wells in 1869. He carried out excavations in the Mendip Hills, and some of the artefacts he discovered are displayed at the museum. n The museum is looking for a part-time volunteer shop manager for the gift shop. Date for King’s Head reopening BUILDING work has restarted at The King’s Head on Wells High Street.

The pub is expected to open to the public on November 19 following two weeks of staff training.

Model car a triumph for human spirit WHEN his friend Peter Butler was diagnosed with cancer, Brian Evans decided to make a replica model of Peter’s beloved 1952 MGTD car as a surprise gift to lift his spirits.

Despite having Parkinson’s himself that causes his hands to shake, he spent four years painstakingly recreating the car in miniature in his workshop, using scrap pieces of wood.

He finally handed it over hidden inside a shoebox – and when Peter saw it he burst into tears.

“I said to Peter ‘I bought you a pair of shoes, I hope you can wear them’,” said Brian.

“He didn’t open the box at first, but he opened it eventually – that’s when he fell apart.”

Peter said: “I couldn’t believe it, I didn’t know what to say. I was overwhelmed. I recognised not only how long it took but what it took.”

The two neighbours in Kings Castle Road, Wells, first met many years ago when Brian was a lorry driver with Sheldon’s and Peter’s father was a director of the company.

Brian was diagnosed with Parkinson’s eight years ago, shortly before Peter acquired the MG that he has lovingly restored.

“Sometimes I had to get a cushion to steady my hand.

Sometimes I couldn’t do anything,” said Brian.

“I nearly threw it all on the floor and jumped on it at one time. It was getting so frustrating and I’m a perfectionist.”

He spent 15 hours or more a week making the model, having only made bird tables previously, and larger-sized model lorries.

He recently took the model car to show members of the local Parkinson’s group whose meetings he attends, and they immediately thought it was made from a kit.

Peter – who has had to undergo major bowel surgery – is having a glass case made for the precious model, complete with brass plaque.

He is planning a big fundraising drive for cancer charities with the help of Milly and Tilly, the Hillman Minx and Constructham caravan he has also restored, which will be launched next spring.

Both he and Brian are determined to show that however ill or infirm people are, they can still take on challenges if they remain positive and determined.

“I want to show people it doesn’t matter how bad you are, you can still do things,” said Brian.

Community awards open for nominations

NEW community awards have been launched by Wells City Council to honour those who make a difference.

The City of Wells Awards have six categories that aim to recognise the contribution shown by individuals, groups and businesses to the service of the local community.

The first winners will be announced at a gala ceremony at the Town Hall on Saturday, December 4, when they will each receive an awards memento.

Councillor Jasmine Browne, who came up with the idea for the awards, is inviting people to nominate those whose work deserves to be rewarded.

“By submitting a nomination, you are helping ensure that those

The categories are: n City of Wells Citizen of the Year Award: A person who has given their time to undertake work in the community.

Return to more normal Poppy Appeal PREPARATIONS are underway for the 2021 Poppy Appeal.

“We are hoping to get back to a more normal appeal this year following the Covid restrictions in 2020,” says Derek Cooper, Poppy Appeal organiser for Wells The Poppy Appeal runs from Friday, October 29, to Sunday, November 14. In this the 100th year of the Royal British Legion and 100 years of the Wells branch, the appeal will be launched with the 100th Poppy Concert in the Town Hall on October 29 with the Wells City Band. Tickets will be on sale soon.

On Thursday, November 11, the usual 11am silence and short service will be held in Market Place. Remembrance Sunday is on November 14 when the annual Remembrance Civic Service will be held at St Cuthbert’s Church, with wreathlaying at the Cenotaph at 11am after the service.

The Remembrance march along Wells High Street in 2019 Plans are being made to have the usual march up High Street to the ceremony at the Harry Patch Memorial at Wells & Mendip Museum. Organisers are planning to add to the usual road closures St Andrews Street so as to have more room to accommodate all those who parade and to get the younger people nearer to the memorial.

The selling of the poppies and other items will this year concentrate mainly on the supermarkets, subject to permission, and there will be fewer other sales outlets.

This will help to prevent stock being spread too thinly and the requirement to have a lot of people to administer the work

involved. It is hoped to have the stall at the Saturday markets on October 30 and November 6 and 13.

“We were hoping to have our pop up shop in the High Street but that is not available this year so if any High Street shop in use or vacant can offer us a space for the two weeks please do get in touch,” said Derek.

Wells makes history with tourism award WELLS has made history by winning the prestigious Coach Friendly Destination award for the second year running.

It was named the winner at the 2020 British Coach Tourism Awards ceremony – postponed due to Covid – held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham on September 22.

Five destinations were shortlisted from the many entrants for this category: The City of Wells, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP Tourism), Southport, Otley and Burnham-on-Sea. Ross Young, who organised the ‘meet and greet’ team welcoming coaches and their passengers to the coach park in Princes Road, was “incredibly proud” to have represented the city at the awards.

“Wells won it in 2019 against strong opposition and the city is the first destination to win the category two years running,” he said.

“This is testament to the brilliant job my team have done and I can’t thank them enough.”

The Coach Friendly Destination award “is for villages, towns, cities, regions (geographic or tourist), islands and countries that can demonstrate not only a commitment to welcoming coaches, coach groups and coach drivers, but also what they did to enhance that welcome. In addition to on-the-ground delivery, judges took an interest in examples of website development and partnership working.”

Work to finish estate due to start soon DEVELOPERS Crest Nicholson say they expect to make a start on work that still needs to be completed at Vicarage Fields, Wells, in the next fortnight.

Residents have long complained about a range of issues that need to be dealt with, including unfinished roads and paths, and a need for landscaping.

A spokesperson from Crest Nicholson told Wells Voice: “We are continuing to work closely with the local authority and management company on a programme for the completion of the remaining works.

“As part of this programme, in addition to an upgrade to the footpaths and completed road surfacing work, landscaping and tree planting will also be carried out, and a play area installed.

“We are committed to completing the work as quickly as possible with an expected start in the next two weeks. An

Daniel Millward from Pegasus Group, the planning consultancy working on behalf of Crest Nicholson, was in attendance at the meeting. He said that while he understood the application being discussed to be relatively uncontroversial, he said he also

understood that there were some separate concerns and that he could act as a liaison with Crest.

He and councillors heard criticism from residents about the standard of existing paths, with weeds growing through them, and a lack of adherence to the original planning agreement in regard to landscaping and maintenance.

Committee chair Adrian I’Anson said that he was not prepared to leave things the way they are, and that he would be keen to organise a meeting with Crest Nicholson and the people of the estate.

The committee agreed to recommend approval of the new plan for the paths, subject to them having a tarmacked surface with PCC edging and a membrane to prevent weed growth.

The application has since been approved by Mendip District Council.

Lots to explore as food festival returns ON Sunday, October 10, Wells Food Festival is making a welcome return to the city.

What began nine years ago as a celebration of Somerset’s rich farming and culinary heritage has evolved into a showcase for some of the county’s finest food and drink producers.

The Artisan Market, with more than 150 stalls at the last count, is a star attraction with an amazing array of regional produce. It is a melting pot of cuisine, and in addition to local specialities such as cheese and cider, visitors can eat their way around the world. A thriving street food scene is in evidence with everything from macaroni and cheese through to Tibetan dumplings on the menu.

The first tasting is of Bacchus wine. Ben explained his choice: “Bacchus, a German grape, ripens easily in the UK. Most importantly, it has a similar palate and style to Sauvignon Blanc, the most popular white variety amongst UK drinkers.

“But whereas Sauvignon Blanc struggles to ripen and get fruity in the English weather, Bacchus consistently manages to reach a pleasant balance of acidity and sugar with fresh fruit and floral aromas.

“Most excitingly, it isn’t found to the same quality anywhere else in the world – including Germany – which gives us the opportunity to create a truly English wine.”

Ben will also be holding a tasting of English sparkling wine. He said: “England is diving headlong into this world, competing with Champagne on quality but experimenting endlessly with new grapes, styles and lees-ageing. Two new post office counters have been installed in the Queen Street store, opposite the pet shop’s retail counter.

“We are very pleased to have the two post office counters operational and at last be able to welcome customers in to this additional part of our shop,” said store owner Heather Derrick, who runs the business with her husband Nigel.

“We would like to say a very genuine and heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to all our customers for being so lovely and supportive about the fact that we are still in training so might not always have kept the queue moving quite as quickly as we would like.

“We are learning more and more every day so we are all confident that we will be fully up to speed in plenty of time for the busy Christmas season.”

The new post office – which has replaced the temporary post office at Wells Bus Station – continues to offer car tax, travel insurance and on demand euros/dollars travel money. The

National Lottery service is not available.

The post office opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 9am5pm.

On demand travel currencies, passport check & send and change giving are available at Glastonbury Post Office.

Heather and Nigel have stressed that it remains very much business as usual on the pet shop side of things at Natural Pets of Wells.

“Please can we remind all Voice readers who are customers of our pet shop that we are definitely not closing the pet shop and we still have all the same products in stock – they have just moved back a little bit further into the shop space,” said Heather. “The separate pet shop items till is still just inside the door on the opposite side of the shop to the post office with the same friendly staff ready, willing and able to help our customers.”

Survey about station bus route ST Cuthbert Out Parish Council is running a survey about bus links between Wells and Castle Cary Railway Station.

It is looking at whether bus connections to the station can be improved, and will be used by train travellers.

This is part of a larger initiative to work towards reducing carbon emissions in Somerset.

Repairers give objects new lease of life SATURDAY, September 4, dawned bright and beautiful for the first Wells Repair Cafe since February 2020.

Refreshments were served outside, and more than 30 items were brought for repair, including power tools, kitchen appliances, wooden items, sewing machines, and treasured sundries. A toy Scottie dog who had lost his yap and bounce was expertly brought back to life by repairer Ray, to the joy of his owner, Ivy. There were so many people who were delighted with the outcome of the repairs.

Project to inspire love of reading in young WELLS Rotary Club is planning a Love for Reading project, designed around school children of infant and junior school age.

Many children struggle with reading, and others who would like to read may not have a single book at home.

In launching this project, the Rotary Club needs to obtain good quality pre-loved children’s books which it can pass on to infant and junior schools. The pupils will be given tuition if necessary, and the books will be given to the children to keep if they wish.

To start with, the teachers will

select the books most suitable for the children.

“With the pressures experienced by many parents, children do not always have books at home and parents do not always have enough time to spend encouraging their child to read,” said Rotary Club member David Randon.

“Some families do not have spare cash to purchase books for their children.

“This project will encourage a love of reading in children and in order to do that we need books.

We are of the firm belief that ‘a child that reads becomes an

adult who thinks’.”

Rotary is appealing for donations of good condition, pre-loved books from families who no longer have use for them, covering the infant and junior age group.

The Works in Wells High Street is assisting Rotary with both storage and some book supplies, and the club is grateful to them for their support.

Rotary can either arrange to collect the books, or they can be taken to David’s house.

Initially, the scheme is being piloted in one school, but the aim is to introduce it eventually at a

number of schools in the Wells area.

“The whole scheme relies on continuity of book supplies,” said David.

Rotary would also welcome volunteers to help with reading and is looking for retired teachers or people with experience in this area. Anyone who is interested in helping Rotary with this aspect can contact David and he will advise the school, who can then arrange the necessary security clearance.

Materials reclaimed to create unique art

By Emma James JACKIE Adams opened her Reclaimed Art Gallery, Jacks, on Priory Road, Wells, on the very day that restrictions were lifted after the latest lockdown.

Six months on, business is booming and customers are showing their appreciation for what is a unique talent.

Jackie, a jeweller for 25 years, creates completely original pieces, all of which make use of reclaimed materials. She explains: “Everything I use is a by-product of another industry: mussel shells come from restaurants; feathers come from meat factories; toys are no longer wanted and would otherwise go to landfill; butterflies are from conservation projects and are no longer wanted. Sometimes

people bring me their own toys or mementos and ask me to create a personal diorama for them.”

Jackie moved to Somerset from London 18 years ago to give her son a better life. Whilst she has been selling to galleries for many years, including to A2 in Wells, this is the first time she has opened her own space.

“When Covid struck, it was very difficult because my art isn’t really postable, so I couldn’t sell.

This shop came up and I thought it was beautiful, especially the windows. I decided to go for it.”

Jackie is constantly making in order to keep her shop full and recognises that this is a wonderful problem to have. She is hoping to run workshops in the new year when she will be able to share her skills with the people of Wells, enabling them to create their own jewellery and art from recycled materials.

Jackie has no regrets about choosing Wells for her new business. She says: “People like independent shops. When visitors come to the city, they like to take something original back as a reminder of their time here.

“From an artist’s point of view, Wells is fantastic. There is so much to look at. Just walking around the moat with the dog is an inspiration. And the Gormley sculpture has certainly got people talking. That’s the whole point.

Whether it’s positive or negative, you are talking about Wells and what’s going on.”

Action required on school places SOMERSET parents and carers are being urged to apply for school places online and on time.

Whether a child is starting school for the first time, or transferring to their next school, applications need to be made through Somerset County Council’s website: www. somerset.gov.uk/admissions For secondary school places, applications opened on September 13 and must be submitted before Sunday,

For primary school places, applications must be submitted between Monday, September 27, and Saturday, January 15, 2022. This applies to all children starting school for the first time in September 2022, as well as those moving between infant and junior or first and middle school.

Recognition for help with vaccinations WELLS Coronavirus Network (WCN) has been awarded a Somerset Medal for work carried out during the pandemic.

The Somerset Medal was launched by Somerset County Council to recognise and thank some of the county’s unsung coronavirus heroes.

The first individual winners were announced on Somerset Day, with a second round of nominations opened up to groups and teams.

Representatives of WCN were among those to receive an award at a presentation evening at Taunton Rugby Club on September 15.

The nomination for WCN read: “They have, since December, been providing volunteer marshals to help vaccinate the population of West Mendip, some 52,000 people. They are now so integral to the vaccination programme they provide on-site marshals, meet and greet team and also observers in our recovery area.

They are always so cheerful and helpful and operate with such a high level of professionalism and reliability.”

Only a small number of marshals were allowed to represent the WCN team at the ceremony in Taunton. Those who attended were Carol Mohide, Emma Lefevre and Judith Blake – Jaime Day could not be there – and they wrote this statement before the ceremony took place for the WCN newsletter: “Over 36,000 individual vaccines were given from the West Mendip Hospital site between December

“Our vision was simple, we wanted to provide a safe place, that anyone coming through the door would feel at ease to take up this new, and largely unknown vaccine, we have seen people from all walks of life, and experienced all types of emotions, from patients, NHS staff, and marshals. There have been tears and laughter, highs and lows, but together we always delivered our vision.”

The cross-party judging panel – Councillor David Fothergill, Leader of Somerset County

Council; Councillor Christine Lawrence, Cabinet Member for Customers & Communities; Councillor Jane Lock, former Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group; and Councillor Leigh Redman, Leader of the Labour Group – reviewed every nomination before coming to their decision on the winners.

Cllr Fothergill said: “Reading the nominations was humbling.

So many people stepped forward to help others at a very difficult time. Somerset’s record in volunteering is second to none – but so many went that extra mile during the pandemic.

“I would like to thank them all on behalf of our county.”

Individuals receiving awards who had been unable to attend the first award ceremony included two based in Wookey, Andy Childs and Kara Bazley.

Andy’s nomination read: “Andy Childs has provided relentless service to his community through the Wookey Hub in Wookey. He is the only social contact many vulnerable and lonely people had through the pandemic. He provided door-to-door food deliveries and hasn’t had a day off in months.

Deserves a medal for all he has done.”

Kara’s read: “Kara Bazley runs a local cleaning company in Wookey and invests in PPE and cleaning products in order to protect her clients, many of whom are elderly, as well as volunteering as a vaccine marshal, and collected/delivered prescriptions to her elderly neighbours.”

Network expanding its services under new name THE WELLS Coronavirus Network (WCN) has proved a remarkable success.

It was born in March 2020 when eight local people came together to coordinate a citywide response to the greatest threat to public health in living memory.

This meeting was kindly hosted by Daniel’s Cafe in Queen Street before the first lockdown and WCN was quickly formed.

Another 560 volunteers joined and the services launched included:

n Doing supermarket shopping for the isolated and vulnerable n Collecting their prescriptions n A seven-day helpline, website and Facebook page n Even walking the dogs of residents unable or afraid to leave their homes n Organising and running the vaccination marshalling WCN will continue to provide these free services, but is now expanding its work under a new name – Wells Community Network – in response to what local people wanted as we

Covid booster jabs campaign begins THE NHS has started delivering Covid booster jabs to people in eligible groups in the South West, as the vaccination programme moves to the next stage.

In line with new guidance set out by the JCVI, the NHS vaccination programme will now invite eligible people, who had their second Covid jab at least six months ago, for a top up.

Hospital hubs have started vaccinating frontline health and care workers as well as identifying other eligible patients for their booster vaccine immediately, with GP-led local vaccination services to follow.

Full vaccination rollout will begin imminently, as more vaccination centres and community pharmacy-led sites come online following final checks, giving people further

protection from the virus ahead of winter.

People do not need to contact the NHS to arrange their booster vaccine, the NHS will be in touch when they become eligible for the jab, with around 4.5 million people in priority groups eligible for a booster over the coming weeks and months.

People will get a call or text from their local GP-led site to get the jab, or will be invited by the National Booking Service, which is starting to issue invitations.

Booster jabs are effective for topping up protection for people who have had both of their jabs from at the very least six months on after their second dose.

This means that some of those in the original nine priority groups will not be eligible for their top-up until the new year.

The Government has accepted the advice of the four chief medical officers to offer a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine to all healthy 12- to 15-yearolds and the NHS is working with partners and the School Age Immunisation Service to deliver this, with children due to start getting the lifesaving jabs in schools from the end of September.

Theatre company back to live rehearsing

WELLS Theatre Festival Community Theatre Company has finally returned to live rehearsing for the first time since lockdown started.

The cast of A Midsummer Night’s Dream began rehearsing in earnest in mid-September ahead of a three-performance run inside Wells Cathedral from October 26 as part of the Festival of the Moon.

Lockdown has not been the only challenge facing the theatre festival this year. Just six weeks before curtain-up they lost their leading lady and embarked on an urgent search for a new Helena.

All’s well that ends well, of course, and the company are delighted to welcome a new talent in the form of Sophia Wood from Bridgwater, who works as a key worker for vulnerable women, as Helena.

Sophie is joined by a number of new actors joining the company playing supporting roles.

Festival promises to be out of this world THIS autumn, Wells Cathedral will play host to Luke Jerram’s spectacular Museum of the Moon, a moveable exhibition that has drawn tens of thousands of people to venues around the world.

To celebrate this lunar ‘landing’, Wells Cathedral has arranged a Festival of the Moon to take place over the course of the Museum of the Moon’s stay from October 13-November 3, with lunar activities, high-profile acts, and other evening events for visitors, concertgoers, and worshippers alike.

The Cathedral is delighted that the festival programme is finalised, and that it will be hosting some fantastic artists, musicians, and scientists: Helen Sharman (the first UK astronaut), who this year celebrates the 30th anniversary of her voyage to the Mir Space Station; the inimitable Dame Patricia Routledge in her latest show, Admittance: One Shilling, with Piers Lane; and Nick Park’s much-loved Wallace and Gromit in A Grand Day Out – to name but a few. Measuring seven metres in diameter, the Museum of the Moon features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones.

Luke Jerram’s multidisciplinary practice involves the creation of sculptures, installations, and live arts projects. Living in the UK but working internationally for 19 years, he is known worldwide for his large-scale public artworks.

Somerset, Wells and a world of discovery EVERYONE likes to claim a link with Somerset. Centuries of myth and magic surround the county and for many it will always remain the heart of England.

So it’s no surprise that a number of the 2021 Wells Festival of Literature speakers are ‘Somerset folk’.

Lucy Pollock qualified in geriatrics in Cambridge and London but has spent the past 20 years living and working here.

Lucy Jago is also fascinated by the county, and having based her first YA book at Montacute House, she now lives here permanently.

Stephen Moss is president of the Somerset Wildlife Trust, and the hero of his latest book is The Swan, that iconic avian symbol of Wells and the Levels all around.

Isy Suttie had to delve into her past to find a link – but was

delighted she had. Isy’s grandma and family were evacuated to Somerset during the Second World War which meant Isy’s mother found herself being born in Castle Cary.

But the real appeal of the Wells Festival of Literature is that it brings the whole wide world to Wells. That was proved last year when the organisers (all of them volunteers) arranged a hybrid festival with a mix of live, in-person events as well as virtual events which ‘beamed’ speakers from outside Wells right into Cedars Hall, while at the same time streaming events to audiences all over the globe.

It is the smallest city in England yet its literature festival knows no bounds.

The topics being discussed during the festival will also take people out into new territory.

Places to be discovered from the comfort of Wells in October include Beijing, America, Russia and China; Ancient Greece, Oxford, the former British Empire; the Alps, the Andes and the Himalayas. But people could also find themselves in more unfamiliar areas, discovering ideas and concepts perhaps not considered before such as plant hunters, whiteness, the hope of a New Age, moral barbarism, the lifecycle of a swan, super senses, talking stones, a novelist’s tricks and ploys, getting old, being you, being odd…

A SPECIAL performance

by English National Ballet’s Philharmonic Orchestra prompted a 100-year-old Wells care home resident to showcase a ballerina portrait from her youth.

Emma produced the photo when staff and residents at Barchester’s Crandon Springs care home on Glastonbury Road joined a Last Night of the Proms celebration by the orchestra, which had them tapping their feet and waving their arms.

Fleur Derbyshire-Fox, English National Ballet’s Director of Engagement, said: “We are delighted to be able to share the outstanding work of our talented Philharmonic Orchestra with Barchester’s residents and staff.

The iconic music of the Last Night of the Proms is so rousing and evocative, we felt certain this was a concert that would resonate with the residents and get everyone singing and dancing along.”

Grants available to help firms with revitalisation projects COMMERCIAL businesses in Mendip are being invited to apply for funding to help them face the challenges and opportunities of the emerging economy, post Covid-19 and Brexit.

Grants ranging between £5,000 and £20,000 are up for grabs for the most promising project ideas.

The new discretionary Business Revitalisation Grant for Mendip was due to be launched on September 27. Applications close two weeks later, at 5pm on Monday, October 11.

The grant is aimed at businesses employing between five to 49 staff, who have a viable project idea which has the potential to ‘revitalise’ their business. Projects that aid business resilience, boost profits, secure existing jobs and potential new employment opportunities, but additionally provide social or environmental benefits for the wider community (for example, lowering carbon emissions, providing a new service for the

To apply for the funding, applicants must first complete an Expression of Interest Form and outline their project proposal.

Selected businesses will progress to stage two, where they will be offered a 1-2-1 session with a business advisor to discuss the challenges and opportunities for the business and the project in more detail.

Grant-giving lunch back after long gap

Daisy still goes for two walks a day despite her arthritis

Variety of steps taken to make Daisy more comfortable again Name: Daisy Age: 9 years Breed: Labrador retriever Likes: Getting wet Dislikes: Thunder Daisy was involved in a road accident as a young dog, which damaged her shoulder and elbow joint, with the inevitable result that she has developed arthritis.

This year, Daisy’s limp started to get worse, so we have taken stock of her problem and looked at all the ways we can manage it to keep her as comfortable as we can for as long as possible.

Daisy has been taking a joint supplement for years, to maintain the quality of the cartilage in her joints and to reduce the progression of arthritis, and it’s important that she keeps taking the supplement every day. Up until this year Daisy was taking antiinflammatories as and when she seemed uncomfortable, but there is lots of evidence that taking them every day as a routine can help prevent flare-ups of arthritis, so this is what we do now. The mechanism by which Paracetamol helps alleviate pain is still rather mysterious, but it does seem to help most dogs with arthritis, and we added this into Daisy’s daily cocktail.

In addition to all of these, Daisy has been lucky enough to start a new monthly injection which is a totally novel approach to treating chronic arthritis in dogs; it’s early days but it seems to be helping her so far.

But medications are only part of the solution for arthritic dogs.

There is a lot Daisy’s owners have done for her at home, too.

Daisy now has shorter walks on flatter ground. She still does an hour every morning and half an hour every afternoon, including off lead, so she has great fun.

Daisy loves to swim and this is great for her joint mobility and to get the weight off her front leg for a time, so her owner chooses walks where she can have a dip without having to climb up and down steep banks.

After wet walks he immediately dries her and keeps her warm.

Keeping Daisy’s weight optimal has always been easy, but now she is exercising a little less her owners are careful not to let her pile on the pounds. And Daisy has a lovely, deep, memory foam mattress to sleep on.

With all these steps addressed, Daisy is much more comfortable again. Long may it last!

THE grant-giving lunch SOUP! is returning to the Connect Centre on October 2 after a lockdown enforced gap of more than 18 months.

“The four charities who have been waiting to present for so long are Wells St John Ambulance, Children’s World, Wells Neighbourhood Watch and Mendip Fibromyalgia Support Group,” said Ross Young, one of the organisers.

“The lockdowns have put great strain on charities with fundraising opportunities curbed as the need for their services rose.”

All the four charities at Saturday, October 2’s event will join the 63 others SOUP! has helped to strengthen their profile and, importantly, raise muchneeded funds.

Cancer counselling charity We Hear You, which received the most votes at January 2020’s

SOUP!, will start the proceedings by telling the assembled company how their winning cheque has helped them.

Wells accountancy firm Probusiness has donated £350 in its continued support of SOUP! and Waitrose, Burns the Bread, Sante Wines, Morrisons and students from the Blue School are providing the food and beverage.

Church packed for special service HUNDREDS of people filled St Cuthbert’s Church for a service to celebrate the life of Nancy Dodd on September 4.

There was music from Wells City Band, Wells Carnival President Maurice Day read a poem, Mayor of Wells Philip Welch read a passage from the

Bible, and there was a tribute to Nancy by Nerina Scott and an address by Alistair Glanville, who conducted the service with the Rev Sam Denyer.

Nancy, who was the first woman to be made an Honorary Freeman of Wells, died in July at the age of 90.

n NEWS IN BRIEF Thirty experience life as chorister ON September 18, Wells Cathedral hosted a free ‘behind the scenes’ day, during which children were able to experience the life of a Cathedral Chorister.

Thirty girls and boys, aged between seven and nine, came from schools across Somerset and beyond for the annual Be a Chorister for a Day event where they met the Cathedral Choristers and participated in singing workshops. The day culminated in singing Choral Evensong in the Quire of the Cathedral with the worldrenowned choir. The children performed the anthem The Lord is my Shepherd by Howard Goodall, helped the choir lead the two hymns in the service, and learnt to process in and out.

There were also events for the children’s parents, including a tour of Wells Cathedral School and tea in the historic Vicars’ Hall.

THE Wells Dementia Action Alliance’s annual fundraising walk will take place on Sunday, October 17, starting from The Bishop’s Palace at 10.30am.

Registration will be at the Palace from 10am.

There will be a £10 entry fee for adults (cash only).

Participants can follow either a 3km or 5km circular route, with refreshments in the Town Hall afterwards.

Another protest in bid to save ward CAMPAIGNERS hoping to save Wells’ St Andrews Ward mental health unit from closure held a demonstration in Frome on September 11.

During the protest one of the organisers, Billiy Almond, read an account from someone who had been admitted to a ward in Wells.

Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group has decided to close St Andrews Ward and move the beds to Yeovil. A petition against the move on Change.org has gained nearly 3,000 signatures.

The campaigners are now planning another demonstration in Wells, with a provisional date of November 12.

n NEWS Grants towards horse therapy SOMERSET Community Foundation (SCF) has launched a new fund supporting children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Somerset, East Devon or North Dorset to access horse-facilitated therapy sessions, which can have many benefits for the users.

The new grants from the Horseshoes and Handprints Fund will cover 50 per cent of the cost of a course of horse therapy sessions up to a maximum of £250.

The fund is open to applications until Friday, November 5.

Razors readied for hirsute Wild Men

But they will soon be tamed – at least their hair.

For Wookey Hole Inn licensee Richard Davey and regular at the pub Jed Tatman are to have their bushy beards and their scalps completely shaved to raise funds for Wells mental health charity Heads Up. This shearing will not be done discreetly. It will be the mane event in an afternoon of fun at the pub on Sunday, October 10, starting at 2pm and winding up at 8pm.

There will be music throughout, a pig roast, auction, raffle and more is being planned.

The Mane Event – the shaving of the two Wild Men – is scheduled for 4.30pm-5pm.

Richard is looking forward to the removal of his bushy beard, not least because it gets in the way when he is trying to drink his Guinness.

“Due to Covid we are experiencing a high level of need and all the money raised will go to expand our services.”

October 10 has been chosen for the full beard and head shave because it is World Mental Health Day, which is designed to raise awareness of conditions like dementia and depression as well as to reduce the stigma often associated with mental health conditions.

Gormley print draw to fund school visits THE installation of Antony Gormley’s DOUBT in Niche 338 on the West Front of Wells Cathedral brings with it opportunities to explore the history and significance of the building.

From the onset of this project, there has also been an ambition of supporting 100 school visits.

With the cost of transport for each school visit running upwards of £500, achieving this goal requires a significant level of fundraising.

Antony Gormley himself has supported this effort by donating an original lithograph for Project Factory, which is raising funds to pay for community involvement, to raffle off via a Prize Draw.

The work is a 100cm x 69cm lithograph made in Copenhagen in June 2013 as part of a series that addresses his architectural concerns and is inspired by images he made in London and New York in the mid-1990s.

While Gormley’s works have sold for up to £5.3 million and this particular work, MANIFOLD (2013), which is an edition of 40, is available from his London gallery White Cube for £6,600, Project Factory is offering entries for £20 each. Draw funds will help support a significant

Spoof art award suggestion THERE has been much comment about the merits of the Gormley sculpture and its appearance on Wells Cathedral.

Now one Wells resident has gone a step further and proposed it as an entry for the Turnip Prize – the annual ‘bad art’ award that parodies the Turner Prize.

The tongue-in-cheek suggestion has come from Robert Porch, of Tor Hill Lane, a Wells resident for 74 years. The Turnip Prize is run from The New Inn, Wedmore, and Robert would like organisers to include DOUBT, as the sculpture is entitled, in this year’s competition.

He said: “I think Mr Gormley’s statue on Wells Cathedral would make a good entry for the Turnip Prize – nine metal boxes stacked on top of

each other, the criteria being something made with the least effort. The problem is getting it down off of the Cathedral, taking it out to The New Inn at Wedmore, waiting for it to be judged, then back to the Cathedral. Will it happen? I DOUBT it. Shame.”

Turnip Prize organiser Trevor Prideaux was pleased to hear of Mr Porch’s suggestion, and said: “If he can remove it from the Cathedral unnoticed and get it to The New Inn, we would be delighted to receive it.”

Entries for this year’s competition are being accepted from November 1. The winner, who receives a turnip nailed to a lump of wood, will be announced at The New Inn on December 5 at 6.30pm.

Focus on final months of reluctant hero A NEW award-winning British independent feature film, Lawrence: After Arabia, will be screened at Wells Film Centre on Wednesday, October 13.

The film tells the story of the TE Lawrence’s short retirement and his mysterious death following a motorcycle crash.

Tom Barber Duffy plays TE Lawrence, and the film also stars Michael Maloney, Hugh Fraser, Nicole Ansari Cox and the voice of Brian Cox. It has won a number of awards at several festivals including Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Soundtrack, Special Jury Award and Audience Award.

The film covers the last year of the life of TE Lawrence – Lawrence of Arabia – a scholar, writer, soldier and reluctant hero. Retiring to his cottage in Dorset he hopes to escape his past but is pulled into political intrigue. He has

Lights will shine in memory of loved ones THE City of Wells Lions Club has announced that it is organising a Tree of Light, in conjunction with The Bishop’s Palace, from early in December.

The tree offers an opportunity for members of the local community who have lost their loved ones to sponsor a light in their memory.

It is hoped that, as happened last year, a dedication ceremony can take place beside the tree.

During this ceremony the names of all the loved ones will be read out, the event videoed and a link to a website provided.

Application forms, which include details of how to make a donation (minimum amount of £5), will be available around Wells from early October. When the tree has been placed in position stars will be hung, each with the name of the loved one, and a remembrance card sent to the donor.

During its monthly meeting at the Lawrence Centre in September, the club presented a cheque for £300 to Marie Curie, the end of life charity.

The donation represented the proceeds of the Great Daffodil Appeal Collecting Boxes, sited at the premises of traders in Wells and the surrounding areas, and a donation from the Lions Club.

The club said that it is delighted to continue its association with Marie Curie, recognising the importance of its delivery of essential frontline

On Friday, November 26, The Unravelling Wilburys will perform at St Thomas’ Church, St Thomas Street, Wells.

Doors will open at 7pm for the concert, with beer, wine, teas and coffees all available.

The Unravelling Wilburys play the country-rock hits of the Travelling Wilburys and their five iconic members, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne.

Work on new section of Strawberry Line

FOR the first time in 15 years, a new section of Strawberry Line is being built in Somerset.

The Dulcote Quarry Link will join the end of the existing Wells to Dulcote path with Dulcote Quarry, now the site of Charlie Bigham’s Quarry Kitchen, one of Mendip’s largest employers.

This 560-metre shared use path will utilise six acres of disused county council-owned land to create an off-road route through woodland and open countryside, and in addition provide a safe route for Bigham’s employees in Wells to walk or cycle to work.

Duchess has the sweetest personality and absolutely loves people but would need to be an only pet as she doesn’t like other animals, especially other cats, and gets very stressed when around them. She has lived with children in the past but is in need of a much quieter household now.

Though young she does have cataracts which she has likely had since birth. She still has some vision and it doesn’t stop her from getting around and being active.

We don’t yet know how her sight is going to progress so she is looking for a home in or around Shepton Mallet/ Wells so that she will be able to continue under the care of Shepton Mallet Veterinary Group. Cats Protection will

support any costs relating to the cataracts. Due to her eyesight she is looking for a nice quiet home where she will need to either be indoor only or have access to a secure garden that she will not be able to get out of.

Council with a contribution from Charlie Bigham’s and with the agreement of Somerset County Council to use their land.

The surrounding area will be managed in a wildlife-friendly way by volunteers, with the aim of creating a range of habitats which will maximise biodiversity.

Strawberry Line volunteers have already demonstrated their capability and commitment by maintaining and enhancing the existing stretch of the path from Wells for the last six years.

This will take the Strawberry Line one step closer to joining up Wells and Shepton Mallet and forming another link in the Somerset Circle.

Strawberry Line campaigners have highlighted the backing given to the project by Mendip District Council and Somerset County Council, both of whom played a crucial part in bringing the proposal to fruition.

Cyclists rewrite record books WELLS was a key location in a fundraising cycle ride that broke the Guinness world record for the largest bicycle-powered GPS drawing.

Members of the fundraising cycling group Thighs of Steel achieved the feat as part of a 2,400km cycle route spelling out the message ‘Refugees Welcome’.

Georgie Cottle and David Charles broke the previous world record on August 27 after finishing the letter ‘G’

on a 100km route that went through Wells twice and ended in Glastonbury.

The proceeds of the event, which finished in Dover on September 18, will go towards supporting refugees, including those displaced by the Afghanistan crisis, with legal advice, trauma counselling and everyday essentials.

Long-distance cycle ride will give big boost to Heads Up

A WELLS man who is cycling from one end of Britain to the other hopes the feat will raise hundreds of pounds for local charity Heads Up. Ian Williams works at the Charlie Bigham’s food production centre at Dulcote, cycling to work from Wells each day, and conceived the idea for the cycling marathon during the pandemic.

Friend Howard Papworth, a professional cycle tour operator, worked out a route incorporating a lot of back roads and sections of the National Cycle Network, and the pair set off from John O’Groats on August 26.

Their journey brought them to Wells on September 17, and they were due to arrive at Land’s End – having covered a total of 1,485 miles – on September 23.

When he spoke to Wells Voice, Ian explained that he and Howard were taking the scenic route, and not doing many miles a day. He said that the Highlands of Scotland had been quite challenging, but that he was enjoying seeing some beautiful parts of the country that were new to him. He said: “I’ve seen parts of Great Britain that I’ve never been anywhere near before.”

Ian has had support from Wells cycle shop Bike City, and was provided with Bigham’s meals to take with him. The business will also be giving a donation towards the cause.

Chance to learn about eBikes AN eBike extravaganza in Wells will give people the chance to talk with experts and owners and find out more about eBikes.

There will also be several bikes available so that people can have a test ride to experience what an electric bike is like.

The event is being organised

by Sustainable Wells and will take place on Cathedral Green on Sunday, October 17, from 10am to 2pm.

The Strawberry Line group will be showing information about changes to the local multiuser path, and a police team will be in attendance to carry out bike security marking.

The electric motor on an eBike provides some assistance with cycling, helping with the hills, and allowing people to cycle a bit further, and commute more comfortably. The range provided by the battery varies but 15-60 miles is typical. The batteries can be charged at home from a standard plug. eBikes can be ridden by anybody 14 years or older, a licence or insurance are not required, and they can be ridden anywhere a standard bike can be as long as the bike has certain restrictions for speed and power which virtually all ebikes for sale in the UK have.

The hope is that they will encourage more people to travel by bike rather than car.

Music filled Wells Market Place on two afternoons of the August Bank Holiday weekend. Helena and Desmond’s Dawn plus the ZZ Birmingham Blues Band played on the Sunday, and Milly Riquelme and her band – pictured above – on the Monday. Members of the Wells Jazz Collective also performed. The shows were paid for by the Wellspring Fund set up a year ago to aid local live music recovery after it had been silenced by Covid constraints.

Collections on both days raised hundreds of pounds to help replenish the fund.

First exhibition at new gallery THE first exhibition is taking place at a new art gallery in Wells.

A group show entitled Concrete and Tyres – which is a quote from the Larkin poem Going, Going – opened at GBS Fine Art on September 17.

The first floor gallery, at 13 Sadler Street, is the creation of contemporary art dealer Giles Baker-Smith and his business partner Tracey Grace.

Giles said that he was completely bowled over after following up a recommendation to look at the space they have utilised for the gallery, set in a Georgian building, with a 3.5 square metre sash window and views across to Cathedral Green and Wells Cathedral.

“It’s one of the most beautiful small gallery spaces I have ever seen,” he said.

“I’ve never seen anything like it anywhere. It is very beautiful.”

Giles had galleries in London for more than 12 years, but left those behind in 2010 and “was quite happy just doing art fairs” until he spotted the opportunity in Wells.

“One of the things I have struggled with is that I haven’t got much to offer the artist in between the art fairs, there’s not a lot going on,” he said.

EVERY Tuesday for the past eight years or so there has been a Wells social and wellbeing walk.

This was started by members disappointed at the ending of an official walk who wished to continue without the formality, wanting to maintain both the social and exercise elements.

There has been an extended break caused by lockdowns but the walks resumed about three months ago without further hitches.

Every Tuesday, walkers meet at Morrisons, Wells (between the two entrances, near the disabled parking bays), to set off at 11am on a leisurely walk lasting about an hour, returning to Morrisons where some of the participants enjoy a coffee.

The walk is normally paced to suit the less able, and the route is never across muddy fields (unless walkers are caught out), with walkers having a good chatter on the way. Although currently a small group, there are walkers from far and wide including Wells, Shepton Mallet and near Taunton.

The walk is not affiliated to any organisation and anybody can join; there is no registration, no fee, no commitment and no catch.

Anybody who would like to take part is invited to join a walk, or just arrive for a coffee in the cafe on the walkers’ return at about noon.

The aim is to put on four or five shows a year in Wells, each running for two months – much longer than the length of an average London show, and long enough to give clients the chance to come down for a weekend.

Giles hopes that the gallery will help pull more people into the city: “Just the same as Gormley on the West Front, it’s trying to bring people into Wells.”

Concrete and Tyres continues until November 27. Gallery hours: Wednesday to Saturday 11am-5pm, and by appointment.

A crisp, refreshing wine popular around the world Light, refreshing, crisp and easydrinking are just some of the characteristics that to any wine lover, denote the world popular Sauvignon Blanc.

Often said to be best enjoyed in the height of spring with foods such as salad, fish and light cheeses, it is no surprise that Sauvignon Blanc has long been affiliated with the world’s warmer climates.

With its origins in the Bordeaux region of France, the grape has made its way to countries as far as New Zealand, with its now renowned Marlborough region having become synonymous with the wine since production began there in 1974.

But changing temperatures due to global warming have this year meant far harsher climates in places like New Zealand, where earlier than expected frosts in 2021 damaged vineyards, leaving their wineries with fewer crop yields than usual and as a result, less wine.

A baby grand piano caused a minor traffic jam when it was delivered to Matthew Coles Antiques in Sadler Street, Wells. Matthew Coles said that although the piano was stripped of all detachable parts, it was still of significant weight, and he apologised for any inconvenience he may have caused. The piano was from a deceased estate in Brent Knoll, the previous owner having been in an orchestra for most of his life. It is on sale at Matthew Coles Antiques for £450.

Renewed appeal for old jewellery THE appeal for the new Breast Cancer Unit at Yeovil Hospital has now reached more than £1,852,000 of the £2 million needed.

A big push is underway to reach the target so that building the unit can start as soon as possible. With this in mind, unwanted and broken jewellery and watches are still

being collected to help with the fundraising.

No resting on laurels after long service award News from the local policing team with PC Dan Williams LAST month after 23 years as a police officer I was lucky enough to be presented with my Long Service and Good Conduct medal. Where has the time gone?

While reflecting on my career I was reciting old incidents and events to my colleagues.

One event which captured my imagination was the tragic Foot and Mouth disease outbreak in 2001. It stuck in my brain due to police officers having to be aware of “Unprecedented restrictions” being placed on the public. These restrictions involved the public being unable to cross certain farmland and some footpaths were closed. Goodness how we would have longed for only having those “Unprecedented restrictions” for the last 18 months.

It has been a busy couple of months in Wells which has been fantastic to see, although the added footfall does present the police service with added pressure. Please let me reassure you the Wells Neighbourhood Team are working tirelessly to prevent crime and keep you safe.

PC Pearson and I were on routine cycle patrol when we witnessed a male running from a supermarket carrying a large quantity of alcohol. Upon seeing Darren and I, the male ditched the alcohol and made a run for it.

Now, Darren and I are slightly ageing but a criminal on foot is no match for a pushbike.

After darting down alleyways and in between cars, the male was eager to escape. I am pleased to say Darren and I managed to apprehend the male. The alcohol was found to be stolen, the male was arrested and later charged to appear before the court.

We considered ourselves to

be in the right place at the right time. Some people would say we got “lucky”, however I am a firm believer that you create your own luck. In my long career I have never seen a criminal caught in the act while an officer sits in the station. In my privileged role of being the Wells Beat Manager I am eager be as visible

Over the past century, a host of different services and bus routes have come and gone. The old double de-clutch buses with tiny wing mirrors have been replaced by vehicles with modern technology. Today’s buses are mainly ultra-clean diesel to Euro VI standard with fully automated ticketing systems.

Rob Sanderson, Operations Manager, added: “We are using this milestone as an opportunity to connect with those with fantastic memories of the buses in Wells.

“We really appreciate the vibrant community spirit and history of Wells. Our local people are what makes our work so enjoyable. We’re hoping to gather and share these memories as we move into our second century of operating.”

Open day to mark bus centenaries AN open day was due to be held at First West of England’s Wells bus depot on Saturday, September 25, to celebrate two special centenaries.

The event not only marked 100 years of buses running in the city, but also nearly 100 years since the depot first opened.

Buses started operating in Wells in August 1920 while the depot, on Priory Road, opened in January 1922. First West of England was celebrating both events on the same day after the pandemic meant last year’s centenary could not be marked.

The buses are essential to the city, connecting Wells to Bristol, Bath, Weston-super-Mare, Shepton Mallet and Glastonbury.

They include the Mendip Xplorer 376, 11th on the list of the most beautiful bus routes in the UK in a Bus Users UK poll in 2018.

Open day visitors were being given the chance to see vintage buses in action and even take a short ride, meet the depot team, hear from local historians, and take away a treat to remember the day.

Today, the depot has a closeknit staff of more than 60 people keeping more than 25 buses operating in and around Wells.

Ollie Edwards, Operations Supervisor, has been working at the depot for 17 years.

He said: “There’s a real family feel among the colleagues here. Wells is a place for which everyone at the depot has fond feelings. There is something special about doing work that supports the local community, whether that is driving buses to get people to work, to the shops, or answering questions from tourists.

Legal guidance with Chubb Bulleid

Mini food festival hailed a success THE last in the Little eat:Festival series in Mendip took place on Wells Cathedral Green on September 5.

Nearly 20 traders set up stalls and shared their local produce with residents and visitors.

Councillor Lucie TaylorHood, Mendip District Councillor for Wookey and St Cuthbert Out West, attended the food festival. She said: “It was a real pleasure to join the crowds of Wells and sample some of the food and drink from local producers, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit – what a beautiful setting too, on Wells Cathedral Green.

“Well done to everyone involved for their efforts. The food festival has certainly had a fantastic run in Mendip this summer.”

Mendip District Council commissioned the fresh food festivals using monies from the European Regional Development Fund to help bring back footfall to the district’s towns and city, following the Covid crisis.

The event, held previously in Street, Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet this summer, was created by the award-winning eat:Festivals duo, Bev and Sarah Milner Simonds.

Grants for green projects VILLAGE communities around Wells are being offered grants of up to £500 for small environmental projects with long-term benefits. The scheme has been set up by St Cuthbert Out Parish Council as one of a range of initiatives developed by the council’s Environment Working Group.

Group leader Councillor Gill Pettitt said the council is strongly committed to doing all it can to bring about environmental improvements and address climate change issues at local level.

“We are very keen to get local community groups involved in this,” she said.

“The ideas may be out there already but just need a bit of

funding to get them going.”

Tree planting, rewilding, renewable energy projects, repair workshops and improving footpath and cycle links are all listed as examples of what could attract parish council funding.

“But it’s important that the ideas come from community groups themselves,” said Gill.

“The winning bids could be none of the above.”

Easton, Wookey Hole, Coxley, Polsham, Dulcote, Dinder and The Horringtons all lie within St Cuthbert Out and the council’s Finance Committee would like to award a £500 grant in each of its four wards.

AST agreements explained

MANY people living in rented accommodation will have signed an assured shorthold tenancy (or AST) agreement before moving into their home. ASTs are the most common form of private tenancy in England and Wales.

The terms of an AST and the obligations of the landlord and the tenant are usually set out in a written agreement signed by both parties.

If the parties agree the terms orally, the landlord must provide the tenant with a written statement of the agreed terms on request.

There are also various requirements that landlords must comply with around the time an AST begins. These requirements, which are listed below, will not be referred to in the AST agreement, but it is important that residential landlords are aware of them.

Failing to comply with some of these obligations will affect a landlord’s ability to bring an AST to an end and, in certain cases, can lead to the landlord being fined or imprisoned.

Before letting a residential property, the landlord must: l Check the immigration status of prospective tenants and any other prospective occupiers to ensure that they have the right to occupy the property. l Install a smoke alarm on each floor of the property and, with the tenant, test that it is in working order on the day the tenancy begins. The landlord should tell the tenant whether the alarm is connected to the mains electricity supply or battery operated. l Install a carbon monoxide alarm in any room of the property that contains an appliance that burns solid fuel and, with the tenant, test that it is in working order on the day the tenancy begins. l Obtain an energy performance certificate (or EPC) for the property and give a copy to the tenant. If the energy efficiency rating stated in

the EPC is F or G, it is illegal for the landlord to let the property without first carrying out works to improve the rating to E or better or registering an exemption. l Provide the tenant with a copy of the current version of the government’s guidance “How to rent: The checklist for renting in England”. l Provide the tenant with a correspondence address in England and Wales and notify the tenant if this changes during the tenancy.

In addition, the landlord must: l Pay the tenant’s deposit (if one is taken) into a government-approved tenancy deposit scheme and give the tenant prescribed information about that scheme within 30 days of receiving the deposit. l Arrange for all gas appliances in the property to be checked by an engineer registered with Gas Safe at least once a year. The landlord must give the tenant a copy of the safety certificate issued by the engineer. l Arrange for all electrical installations in the property to be inspected by a properly qualified person at least once every five years.

The landlord must give a copy of the report issued by the inspector to the tenant before they move in, to any existing tenant within 28 days of the inspection and to any prospective tenant within 28 days of request. l Comply with the General Data Protection Regulation by keeping any personal data acquired in connection with the tenant and any other lawful occupier secure and retaining it for no longer than is necessary for the purposes of the tenancy.

In short, there are many potential pitfalls for residential landlords. It can be expensive, time consuming and hugely frustrating to rectify omissions or errors made when or before an AST is granted.

Mr Wells back in Wells as new school head

A NEW head started at Wells Cathedral School’s Junior School on September 1.

Jody Wells succeeds Julie Barrow, who has retired after 30 years at the school.

Most recently, Jody was Headmaster of Forres Sandle Manor Prep School in Hampshire, but his first job was at Wells and he is delighted to be coming back to where it all began.

He said of his journey into teaching: “After I left school, I signed up for a gap year at a school in Devon to give myself time to decide what to study at university. My mother was a teacher and I had no intention of following in her footsteps – in fact I even had a £10 bet with the Headmaster in my first week that I wouldn’t go into teaching. But my year at the school changed everything. I paid my £10 on the last day of term and have never really looked back.

Car drivers raise £500 for charity CLASSIC and historic car drivers have raised £507 for the local branch of Macmillan Cancer Support through a rally across mid-Somerset.

This annual event normally finishes on Wells Cathedral Green but because of concerns about safe distancing, it was moved to the wide-open spaces of the Bath and West Showground.

“The weather was perfect,” said Roger Dollins from Draycott, chairman of the Classic and Historic Motor Club. “We

were delighted to have had such a successful event and been able to support such a great charity.”

The Mayor of Wells, Philip Welch, presented the cheque to Mark Tobin, chairman of the Wells Macmillan Support branch, at the city’s Swan Hotel, where he is manager.

“The Mayor has made Macmillan his charity and we are grateful for his support,” said Mark. “Covid has made fundraising very challenging and Philip’s efforts are making a difference.”

Finding the funny side of lockdown LIFE During Lockdown was no fun but a new comedy show with that name will be packed with laughs. The premiere will be in Wells Town Hall on Saturday, October 9, 7.30pm for 8pm start with drinks and a buffet.

Travel network: our strategic priorities AT the time of writing, I have just responded to the Peninsula Transport Vision Document and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to share my thoughts in this month’s Wells Voice column.

This is a consultation to begin developing a regional transport strategy, which plans and prioritises strategic infrastructure across the peninsula over the next 30 years.

This is to ensure long-term goals for the South West and its travel network are met, which I think we can all agree urgently need addressing.

I hope constituents have had the chance to respond and have their say, and I wanted to mention my thoughts on the future of transport in this part of the world and the priorities I think are key to improving

My view is that the dualling of the A303, improvement of the A361 from Street to the M5, the restoration of the railway and a new train station at Shepton Mallet, and faster and more regular train services from Highbridge to Bristol are our strategic priorities.

I want to see this so that those who live in the Mendips and work in Bristol can commute effectively – we must make sure the connectivity to the north is easier than it is currently.

I recently met with representatives from the county council to discuss these visions and it also became very clear that by embracing new technology available, there are huge opportunities to make a difference in achieving our net zero targets, whilst also

encouraging tourism through improving public transport and introducing more cycle paths.

I believe these can be exciting projects for the future, which will have much support.

The key message I wanted to get across was one which I have made clear since I became the Member of Parliament for Wells – it must not be forgotten the importance of connections with North Somerset and Bristol. The tourism industry needs it, as well as so many residents who choose to live in this constituency and work elsewhere.

I very much look forward to seeing the final proposed plan, and I will continue to work closely with the relevant stakeholders, as this plan progresses.

I want to see an ambitious plan, which will transform travel here in Somerset.

Duty of care must be taken seriously

Appeal for help with tree planting audit WELLS residents are being asked to let Mendip District Council know about any new tree planting that has been taking place in the area.

The council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and in response to that has recently agreed a CO2 emissions pathway and a carbon management plan.

Part of the management plan is to increase tree coverage across the district to help it meet its goals by 2030.

“This is a task that involves everyone and so we’re looking to local communities to understand better what is currently going on across Wells,” said the council’s Climate Change and Resilience Officer, Jacob Hall.

“Counting and measuring the new trees planted throughout the district is not an easy task so we’re hoping you can assist us.”

Jacob is asking people who are aware of any planting

currently going on, or who might like to get involved, to get in touch with him by emailing Jacob.hall@mendip.gov.uk.

The planting details required are: date and length of planting (estimated is fine); location; number of trees; species; stakeholders (ie. those planting and any other organisations involved such as those funding).

Jacob said: “We fully appreciate that these figures – like all in the CO2 emissions reduction battle – will not be 100 per cent accurate or precise but we hope to cross-reference the figures gathered with other data and come up with a reasonable approximation on what has been planted in Wells and throughout the Mendip district.

“Thank you very much for your support.”

DUTY of Care is defined simply as a legal obligation to: always act in the best interest of individuals and others. Not act or fail to act in a way that results in harm.

Act within your competence and not take on anything you do not believe you can safely do.

We all have people we look after and look in on to support at times of need which is lovely, but there are situations where you can find yourself making decisions. When acting in a person’s best interests you must do so with their consent unless you have evidence that the person lacks capacity to make that particular decision at the time it needs to be made. Your duty of care is to also provide the decisions that would be in their best interest so you would need to know them quite well.

When it is evident a person lacks capacity to make safe decisions for themselves then Power Of Attorney can become active if in place, this ensures someone’s best interest can be looked after when there comes a time where perhaps they are not able to make decisions to look after themselves. The Power Of Attorney sets out your duty of care towards someone, looking after their best interests for them as an individual. The decisions

that are made are not for your benefit or wishes but for the person you are supporting.

Carers who visit and provide a service have a duty of care to provide high quality care to the best of their ability. Care professionals are trained to have the skills and knowledge to understand their duty of care in providing a safe and quality service which looks after their customer’s best interest. This means they anticipate risks and take care to prevent them causing harm. The care provider is expected to be trustworthy and follow a code of practice which you are entitled to see if you wish. Employers have a duty of care to their employees too, which means that they should take all steps which are reasonably possible to ensure their health, safety and wellbeing. Building a positive relationship with your carer and their team is very important as over time they will get to know you well and therefore provide the service tailored to your needs, wishes and preferences which the care team have a duty to provide you with, so long as their and your safety is not compromised.

Training to help prepare for worst SOMERSET’S residents are invited to sign up to free, interactive online training with emergency responders and volunteer organisations throughout October, organised by the Somerset Prepared partnership.

The fourth annual Resilience event starts with live talks on Monday, October 4, and aims to help communities become better prepared for emergencies as well as looking at wider preparedness measures that anyone can take.

Anyone who registers will receive an information pack,

‘The sessions will cover a range of subjects from how to use social media in emergencies to food resilience and crime prevention’ event pack and weekly emails signposting to videos and toolkits on a variety of subjects.

Interactive training sessions with national training provider Communities Prepared are on offer, alongside live online presentations from emergency and community organisations, as well as national flood resilience expert Mary Dhonau.

Councillor David Hall, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Planning and Community Infrastructure, said: “Interactive events like this are an excellent way to raise awareness with local communities and individuals and help them to take vital steps in preparing for an incident, which could ultimately save lives.

“The sessions will cover a range of subjects from how to use social media in emergencies to food resilience and crime prevention.

“It’s a great opportunity for groups to hear from each other, share their experiences and ask the experts.

“The training workshops are focussed on topics we often see raised by communities, including recruiting volunteers, how to assess risk and insurance.”

Sessions will be led by a range of organisations including the Environment Agency, South West Ambulance Service Trust, Communities Prepared, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, Avon & Somerset Police, Somerset Rotary, Somerset Civil Contingencies Unit, Spark, and Community Council for Somerset.

Ardal O’Hanlon, Phil Wang (top) and Kiri Pritchard-McLean performed at two outdoor shows at The Bishop’s Palace on September 8, and Reginald D Hunter (bottom), Fern Brady (centre) and Jayde Adams appeared on September 9. The comedians kept the jokes coming despite rain on the second night that prompted a man in the audience to hand his umbrella to Fern Brady, who completed her act while shielding beneath it.

Residents were admitted if they were, “Poore and distressed, not under the age of 50, old and impotent without other means to relieve themselves, resident in Wells for the space of not less than seven whole years.

Invitation to join jubilee tree initiative SOMERSET residents, communities, and organisations are being asked to join a national initiative to plant trees in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Next year will mark 70 years since HM The Queen came to the throne – the longest reign in the country’s history.

There are various plans for celebrations to mark her Platinum Jubilee, including a four-day national Bank Holiday from Thursday, June 2, through to Sunday, June 5.

As part of the celebrations, HRH The Prince of Wales has devised a project called The Queen’s Green Canopy, which is designed to leave a legacy in memory of his mother’s reign for many generations to come.

The idea is for people – both individuals and organisations –

Youngsters train like the stars at National Football Centre FOOTBALL A GROUP of young footballers from Wells followed in the footsteps of their England heroes by attending a training day at the national team’s prestigious headquarters.

Wells City Under-13s visited the National Football Centre at St George’s Park in Staffordshire on Saturday, September 18, just two months after the England men’s team used the centre as their base during an historic run to the Euro 2020 final in July.

The 26 youngsters were given a guided tour of the £125 million centre, which features 14 outdoor pitches – including a replica of the Wembley surface – a fullsize indoor 3G pitch, a suite of rehabilitation and sports science areas, and an indoor futsal arena.

The Wells team were put through their paces by two Football Association coaches, starting with a warm-up on an indoor running track and set

The players then enjoyed a kick-about on the ‘David Beckham Pitch’ to end their day in style.

Coach Paul Roberts said: “We had been planning the trip to St George’s Park for two years, but had to keep delaying it due to the

pandemic. It was definitely worth waiting for.

“Our players thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and it added to the experience knowing that they were using the same equipment and pitches as the likes of Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling.

“They asked some really smart questions on the tour of the centre and the FA coaches were really impressed with their behaviour. They were a credit to their club.”

SINCE Stuart Disney joined Mendip Golf Club as Professional in 2017, Mendip has seen a resurgence in its Junior Golf, and particularly is now seeing an unprecedented number of junior girls. Whilst not a Junior, Aimee Sawyer (+3) has been an inspiration to 15-year-old Ellen Reakes (0.8), and in turn Ellen is now inspiring a further crop of youngsters. Thirteen-year-old Connie Cox, 13-year-old Daisy Jeffrey, 15-year-old Polly Jones and 11-year-old Ffion Richardson all hold competitive handicaps and there are other younger girls still in the early stages of learning the game.

Mendip’s team of Connie, Ffion and Junior Captain 17-year-old Josh Seviour were Somerset’s representatives in the National Junior Champion Club competition held at Woodhall Spa, the home of England Golf.

Their consistency over the two days gained them the runners-up spot, a wonderful achievement for this very young and largely inexperienced team.

Mendip entertained Worlebury in the annual fixture to compete for the Centenary Jug. This match started in 2008 to commemorate both clubs’ centenary and is a 20-a-side fixture with the teams selected by the Men’s, Ladies and Seniors Captains. After a hard fought affair Mendip triumphed 5½4½. Mendip’s wins came from Men’s Captain James Boyce and Vice Captain Alan Roper, Jim Scott and David Collins, Ladies Captain Anne Collins and Vice Captain Allison Rummings and Nola Russell and Sandie Roper, and three matches were halved.

An inaugural Ladies Captain versus Ladies Vice Captain’s Team match took place with seven pairs a side. Ladies Captain Anne Collins led her team to a 4-3 victory.

The Seniors monthly competition had an entry of 100 players. Division 1 went to Brian Smith with 39 points after count back from Roland Greenway.

Division 2 saw a win for Gareth Collier with 43 points. The Veterans prize went to Julian Pallister with 37 points after count back from Brian Frances.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS WI SEPTEMBER was our first meeting at the museum since lockdown. Covid protocols necessitated a risk assessment and people bringing their own drinks, but members were delighted to see each other in person again. Five joined in via Zoom, making this our first ever hybrid meeting.

President Anne presented Secretary Val with flowers to thank her for her enormous efforts throughout lockdown, keeping members informed and entertained with regular email newsletters. She welcomed the many new members, explained how things work and introduced those who lead groups including cycling, netball, gardening, reading, photography and craft.

Members were reminded of the online offerings of Denman College and the WI Wanderers Facebook page. Membership Secretary Audrey asked people to let her know of any changes to personal details so she can ensure entries on the national membership database are accurate.

Both book groups will be reading Magpie Lane by Lucy Atkins, the book group choice at Wells Festival of Literature, and attending the discussion event at Cedars Hall in October.

In County news members were reminded about the Christmas carol service, including the opportunity to sing in the choir, and that this year’s AGM in November will feature a talk from Taunton Scrubbers who made scrubs for NHS staff during the pandemic.

The main business of the evening was a quiz led by Jacqui. Questions covered some tricky geography (where IS Timbuktu?), some challenging history (Henry VIII’s fifth wife?) and a picture round identifying celebrities with Somerset connections.

Local History had a very informative talk on Tithe Barns by Joe Rogers, author of a recent history on the origins and function of these great rural structures. He talked about tithe barns and other medieval barns with a few famous nationwide examples, and then looked more closely at Somerset and the surrounding counties. There are over 20 important medieval barns in the Bristol area alone.

The Monthly Talk in September was on the History of C &J Clark, Shoe Manufacturers of Street, from 1723 to 2005.

facilities, such as the Board School (now Living Homes), Strode School and the library, Crispin Hall and the swimming pool. Much of this was achieved

by Alice Clark, in the 1920s, the first lady director and one of the first female directors of any company in the UK. Clarks had regarded themselves as the guardians rather than owners of the organisation. Machinery was introduced to a workforce which had been used to making shoes for the company at home, and the firm’s marketing was innovative and unique; retail outlets on virtually every high street and devices to measure the size of a child’s foot for maximum comfort. Sadly, production now happens abroad, chiefly in the far east, but the company still leaves its outstanding legacy of benign and enlightened employment throughout the UK.

In early September 35 members of Wells u3a were grateful to have the sunshine back after a cool August for nearly all five days of their holiday to Cornwall. They stayed at the Falmouth Hotel, situated between the Pendennis headland and a line of beaches, with a wonderful view. Falmouth is very much a working port on one of the best estuaries in the country on the beautiful River Fal. The trip covered a variety of visits – Cornish gardens which included Saltram, Trelissick and naturally the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Time was spent in the fishing village of Fowey and the free day gave everyone the chance to discover the attractions of Falmouth. A conducted tour was arranged at Cornwall’s only cathedral, in Truro, and the only jail in Cornwall, Bodmin Jail (now a tourist attraction) gave an insight into the jail’s operation over 150 years where some of Cornwall’s more notorious prisoners were incarcerated.

There are a great variety of groups to join in Wells u3a, some of which are still using Zoom until restrictions ease but that doesn’t stop new members being welcome. AVALON STITCHERS BACK in February the Embroiderers’ Guild decided to change the way it operates and now no longer supports a country-wide network of local branches.

The members of Avalon Branch voted to become an independent stitch group and Avalon Stitchers was born. They are an enthusiastic group of stitchers, with considerable skills and expertise between them, who enjoy learning from each other as well as well-respected guest tutors. All aspects of the art of stitch and textiles are explored and they frequently venture outside the box.

BRIGHT-BERRIED autumn is in full flow and preparations underway to put things in order for next year. Where to start is ever a problem. I have discovered a kindred spirit in the Canadian humorist Stephen Leacock who is bewildered by many of the bookish instructions and advice which only add to the heap of small but significant mysteries in this business of gardening. He writes: “It appears that the right time to begin gardening is last year.”

He goes on to home in on one of gardening’s perennial little mysteries viz. loam, “All the books lay stress on the need of ‘a deep, friable loam full of nitrogen’. This I have never seen.

I do not deny the existence of loam. But I am admitting now in all humility of mind that I don’t know what loam is.”

Here Leacock and I share the same bafflement. Experts tell you to work up a good rich loam without telling you exactly what it is. Apparently, it’s all about sand, silt and clay. Or what Leacock refers to as “earth, mud and dirt”. Whatever it is, many of us amateur gardeners continue to do what we always have done in a spirit of happy optimism, often in ignorance but ever in hope.

Happily, Wells Gardening Club has successfully managed a programme of well-supported garden visits by car.

September saw us at Holt Farm, the impressive gardens of Yeo Valley, Blagdon, and October’s excursion will be to Lady Farm, Chelwood. These visits will go some way towards sustaining the club’s spirit throughout the next few months.

The very reluctant decision has been taken to postpone the programme until the new year when the hope is to be able to meet in normal surroundings and share the friendly conviviality that epitomises Wells Gardening Club.

In the meantime, keep enjoying the garden.

Comedy mirth before Halloween frights WOOKEY Hole is to host to another evening of comedy on Saturday, October 16.

The Comedy Cavern returns after the first evening back in August was a big hit with the audience.

Cerys Nelmes, a leading MC on the comedy circuit, who loves to play on her West Country heritage – and is often seen as an extra in Casualty – will be back to host proceedings.

The line-up will include Aaron Simmonds, a regular on TV and radio and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, whose style is story-based, with clever one-liners.

Mark Dennett hails from Cornwall and takes his comedy to the edge. His reflections on life contain some dark thoughts on midlife marriage and cohabitation and his less-than friendly Cornish neighbours.

Dickens by Candlelight, a light-hearted look at Victorian society as seen through the eyes of Charles Dickens and recreated by Barry North, will take place at Wells Town Hall on Friday, December 10.
