Changes being made to Christmas Market THERE will be a different format for this year’s Wells Christmas Market.

Instead of a four-day event in the week before Christmas, Wells Saturday Market will host additional stalls on December

14 and December 21 to create a festive atmosphere in the city.

The special seasonal market will be located through the Bishop’s Eye on the Bishop’s Palace Green.

Organised by the Mendip

Markets team, the market will feature stalls selling Christmas food and drink, gift ideas and seasonal fare.

Pair achieve sauerkraut world record TWO women have succeeded in setting the first ever Guinness World Record for the largest serving of sauerkraut after their epic endeavours at last year’s Wells Food Festival.

In just six hours on October 14, Jo Webster and Katie Venner led a team of about 250 volunteers in a frenzy of chopping and massaging of Riverford-donated cabbage and fennel.

The glut of newly-made sauerkraut was transported from the food festival site to Jo’s home in Wells, where it was kept under lock and key while it fermented for 11 days.

The official weigh-in was conducted under the beady eye of a Weights and Measures expert on October 26, 2018, who confirmed the official weight of the sauerkraut was 359.6kg.

To fulfil Guinness’ requirements, every last piece of sauerkraut had to be distributed for consumption. And it was – all around Somerset, with some making it as far afield as London.

interest in microbes, gut health and fermented foods, they hatched a plan to create a community event to draw attention to the simple things everyone can do to keep their guts healthy – like eating more veg and fermenting some of it.

Sauerkrautathon was born.

Jo said: “I am absolutely thrilled that we have won our Guinness World Record, but the real aim of Sauerkrautathon was to encourage people to do what they can to care for their own health. We hope someone will break our record as soon as possible and, in so doing, teach even more people about fermented foods.”

New format for Christmas Market From page 1 will take place on both dates in December to help get shoppers into the Christmas spirit.

Following on from Mendip District Council’s Climate Change Emergency pledge made earlier this year, the market will focus on sustainability, with traders offering ethical items as well as tips and ideas to help shoppers have an ethical and guilt-free Christmas.

Working with the local community and Wake Up Wells, the Mendip Markets team are creating a festive Christmas archway at the Palace Eye made from recycled plastic bottles.

They are also hoping to hold a number of community days in Wells in the lead up to the markets to offer people the chance to be involved with creating Christmas decorations from waste and recycling items.

Councillor Nick Cottle, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: ‘‘Following feedback from the previous Wells Christmas

Markets the team have worked hard to revise the format this year.

“The Wells at Christmas format is a different offering to previous years. By extending the regular market into the Bishop’s Palace Green we’ve connected the centre of Wells to the Palace.

The new layout also gives the Wells Christmas Market the opportunity to grow over future years. This collaborative approach to Christmas by working with local community groups is a great way to enhance the Christmas offering in the City of Wells.”

There will be around 90 stalls at the normal market and then a further 30 to 40 stalls in the extended Christmas market on the Bishop’s Palace Green. The markets will be open from 9am4pm on December 14 and 21.

Pet shop owners aim to take on post office THE pet shop in Queen Street, Wells, could become the new home for Wells Post Office.

Heather and Nigel Derrick, the owners of Natural Pets of Wells, are applying to take on the post office franchise.

The couple have discussed their plans with the staff at Wells Post Office in Market Place, and hope they will continue their roles in the new post office if the application is successful.

The Market Place branch was due to close at the end of September with the retirement of Postmaster Kevin Truman.

He had already agreed to keep it open until the new year while the search for a solution went on after a proposal to relocate the post office to the Spar store in Tucker Street fell through. He has now said that he will keep the post office open for even longer, into the early months of the new year, to allow for a transition period if required.

“We have plenty of space available in the pet shop and we were already looking into various options to introduce an additional enterprise to make better use of all the space when we were approached by the representative from the Post Office,” said Heather.

“Before taking on our first pet shop in Midsomer Norton five years ago, Nigel and I had actually spent several months looking at many other retail businesses which were for sale.

We very much liked a few of those shops which had post offices as part of them, but at that time none of the ones for sale that met our business needs were in our local area around here so we are very hopeful indeed that our application will succeed.”

Heather and Nigel opened Natural Pets of Wells a year ago, in what was Thatchers pet shop, not far from where there used to be a post office in what is now Roderick Thomas estate agents.

Heather said that the Post Office has recommended the installation of a three-position post office counter and the digital booth, to be sited where the pet shop counter is currently, with the pet shop counter moving to the opposite side of the shop.

“Being in Queen Street, we are only just off the High Street, so the post office would still be in the heart of Wells,” said Heather.

“Our shop has easy and level access from the pavement, has parking outside the door, plus we are just a short walk from the bus station with the large car park adjacent to it, so we hope no one will mind it moving to us now it can’t stay in its existing building.”

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We can confirm that there is an interested applicant who wants to take on Wells Post Office and we are progressing their application. We are not yet at the stage where we can announce our plans.”

Thank you to fundraiser extraordinaire A SPECIAL presentation has been made to the owner of CanDo4You in Wells High Street for raising more than £21,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

David Harris – who also owns CanDo4You shoe repair and key cutting shops in Midsomer Norton and Winscombe – has raised the money by refusing to charge customers for small jobs and asking them to donate money in collection tins in the shops instead.

“I turn down a lot of money just to give something back,” said David.

“We have people who put in £20. It’s quite inspiring.”

David lost his first wife to cancer; his mother Sally, who used to work in the shop, also had cancer, though she has now recovered. Macmillan was there for both of them.

He reduced the number of shops he owned from seven to the current three so that he could

His son Thomas, who also works in the Wells shop, raised £1,400 for Weston Hospice by taking part in a fundraising run.

“We’re a family business so the staff know how important it is to keep that box ticking over,” said David, who has been in

Wells for 23 years.

Mark Tobin, chairman of Wells & District Macmillan Cancer Support group, and fellow committee members made the presentation to David and his staff on September 25. Mark handed over a framed certificate, as well as wine and chocolates.

Mark said: “Ninety-eight per cent of Macmillan’s income comes directly from the generosity and kindness of people such as David and his colleagues at CanDo4You. David’s independent community spirit shines through in everything that he does.

“Every penny of every pound raised through the Wells committee is used locally to help sufferers and their families, offering medical, physical, emotional and practical support along every step of their cancer journey.

“Without people like David our work would simply not be possible, we simply cannot thank him enough, he is a truly inspirational person.”

Poppies returning to Palace THE Somerset Poppies that were so admired when they appeared at The Bishop’s Palace last November are to be displayed there again this year.

Coxley Primary School teacher Dan Vidler masterminded the creation of 7,986 poppies in 2018 by more than 4,500 children in every school around Wells to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War. Many of the poppies, each representing a serviceman from Somerset or who served in a Somerset regiment who lost his life during the war, were bought by visitors to the display, raising more than £6,500 for the Wells branch of The Royal British Legion and SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity.

The poppies that remain – more than 6,000 in total – will be displayed again at The Bishop’s Palace from November 10-23. About 3,000 will be planted outside the Palace around the South West Bastion and will be seen from across the moat next to Palace Fields.

Another 3,000 will be displayed around St Andrew’s Well, inside the Palace grounds.

“I spoke with many visitors to the display in 2018 about our shared concern that, when the centenary commemorations were over, memories and appreciation of the losses in the war could begin to fade.

We hope to do our bit to avoid this happening by continuing The Somerset Poppies’ commemoration to 101 years.”

Earl and Countess attend events in city ROYAL visitors The Earl and Countess of Wessex were welcomed to Wells on September 24.

The Countess visited Wells Cathedral and Wells Cathedral School, in her capacity as Patron of the Wells Cathedral Chorister Trust, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the Girl Cathedral Choristers.

She met the boy and girl choristers, attended a short musical performance by musicians from Wells Cathedral School, listened to a Chorister rehearsal in the Cathedral and took part in the cutting of a celebratory anniversary cake.

She was later joined by her husband in the Cathedral at a service of Choral Evensong sung by the Cathedral Choir.

The service was also attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, the current High Sheriff, and a large number of other civic guests. Regular

Boys first sang in Wells Cathedral in the year 909, and

Wells Cathedral School was established the same year. In 1994 girls joined the choral foundation for the first time.

Today the choir consists of 18

boys and 18 girls, alongside nine professional male singers, the ‘Vicars Choral’, along with three Choral Scholars who are all trained by the country’s leading music schools and have been selected by competitive audition.

In common with other Cathedral choirs, young Choristers at Wells engage in a rigorous programme of more than 20 hours a week of rehearsing and performing, often seven days a week in term-time, with sessions before and after most school days.

Boys and girls usually sing separately alongside the Vicars Choral for each of the Cathedral’s nine weekly sung services, but all join together for larger services, events, and tours, several times a year.

Both girls and boys generally leave the choir at the end of Year 9 with many of them remaining at Wells Cathedral School to complete their education.

NOMINATIONS have been coming in for the new BA5 Awards that aim to celebrate the people who do so much good work in the local community.

Young or old, well known or not so well known, there are so many individuals and organisations that could be recognised – and the nominations submitted so far illustrate this diversity.

“We are delighted with the response so far and look forward to receiving more nominations and hearing about all the generous contributions to the community in Wells,” said Chris Winter, chair of Wells Civic Society, one of the partners that has instigated the BA5 Awards along with Wells Chamber of Commerce & Tourism and Wells Voice.

Members of the public are being invited to nominate people or organisations they think merit an award for their contribution to Wells and the surrounding area. Five will be chosen as winners of the inaugural awards.

They will each receive a certificate and a specially chosen terracotta tile made by Black Dog, the renowned Wells tilemaker.

“It’s a nice opportunity to publicly acknowledge some of the people who give their time and energy which makes a difference in people’s lives,”

said Robert Powell, chair of the chamber of commerce.

Fireworks event will be bigger than ever WELLS’ biggest annual firework display will be bigger than ever this year.

Wells City Football Club has announced that it is arranging its largest ever event on Saturday, November 2.

Before the firework display, there will be a fancy dress Halloween disco for children, and after the display there will be a silent disco.

Club chairman Steve Loxton said: “This year’s event will be substantially bigger than previous years. We will be hosting a children’s fancy dress Halloween disco from 4pm, our largest firework display at 6.30pm, and then finishing with a silent disco from 8pm until late.”

Organiser James Bevan said: “I would like to give a huge

thank you to Wells Film Centre who are this year’s main sponsor for helping to fund the costs of putting this event on.”

Tickets to the event can be purchased at the gate of The Athletic Ground, Rowdens Road, on Saturday, November 2. Gates open at 4pm.

Tickets are priced £5 adult, £3 child, £15 family (2 adults, 3 children), with children under 5 able to go free.

Following on from the success of Party On The Pitch held in May, organisers hope this new combined Halloween and firework event in November will prove popular with local residents, attracting a larger crowd and thus securing it as an annual event to be enjoyed by all.

Appeal for witnesses to fatal crash POLICE have appealed for witnesses after the death of a woman following a road traffic collision near Wells.

The collision happened at the junction of B3139 and B3135 at Hendon on August 25 at about 11.55am.

A Skoda Fabia was being driven southbound on the B3139 and a Mercedes was travelling in the opposite direction. As the Skoda was turning right

towards the westbound junction of the B3135, the Mercedes was in collision with it. The woman passenger in the Skoda was taken to Southmead Hospital with lifethreatening spinal injuries and died three days later.

Police are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who may have dash cam footage of the incident. They can be contacted on 101 quoting reference 5219195919.

Dozens attend consultation on proposed changes to fire service ABOUT 50 people attended the public consultation dropin afternoon in Wells about proposed changes to the fire service.

Under the Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service proposals, Wells could lose its second fire engine during the day.

Several fire service personnel were at Wells Library on September 5 to talk to members of the public about the possible changes and hand out information.

A spokesperson said afterwards that there were some useful discussions.

“People expressed concern

at the potential loss of one of the fire appliances during the day – the other fire appliance remains 24/7 – and fire officers explained the reasons behind the options in more detail,” said the spokesperson “There wasn’t always agreement but everyone’s opinions were listened to respectfully.”

The 12-week public consultation across the fire service area concluded on September 20.

Responses will be collated and a report compiled which will go to the Fire Authority on November 8 for a final decision.

Group set up to monitor development PEOPLE who live in Wheeler Grove and Wood Close have formed a residents’ group to monitor a new housing development and to try to keep its impact on them to a minimum.

Mendip District Council granted planning permission for 220 new homes on neighbouring land between Wells and Haybridge at a planning board meeting on September 18.

A decision on the application had originally been deferred because of the “dull” designs and residents’ concerns including the proximity of the development and the height of buildings.

Now that the application has been approved and after some of the concerns were addressed, nearby residents want to ensure that they are treated respectfully when the building work is carried out, and they have the backing of local councillors to make sure their voices are heard.

Residents and councillors who will be keeping a watchful eye on a new housing development to the west of Wells “The developers addressed some of the issues but some of them they did not,” said Steve Green, who lives in Wheeler Grove, and whose wife Jane spoke as an objector to the plans at both council meetings.

“We initially got involved because we were horrified at how close the new houses were going to be. Now we’re trying to get the developers to be more considerate to residents on this

boundary. We want to make sure they adhere to the rules and regulations regarding working hours and noise levels, and put up plastic sheets to stop the dust.

“The majority of people living here are retired, semi-retired or work from home, so there will be no respite from the dust and noise as they will not be going out to work.”

Rob Ayres have pledged to help the residents, as has city councillor Sarah Briton and Wells’ county councillor Tessa Munt. The first residents’ meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 12, at 7pm, at The Globe Inn in Wells.

New move to bring pub back into use THE owners of The King’s Head in Wells High Street are taking another step towards bringing the pub back into use, and aim to make it a focal point of life in Wells.

Star Pubs & Bars plan to spend to spend “significant funds” to refurbish the pub, which has been empty for years, once they have found someone to run it.

They are planning improvements to the manager’s accommodation to make it more appealing to potential operators.

“We plan to invest significant funds in refurbishing The King’s Head to make it a focal point of life in Wells,” said a spokesperson.

“Building work will start on this exciting project once new operators are found to take it on.”

A planning application has been submitted to Mendip District Council for new studwork walls to the pub’s existing function room to create new manager’s accommodation.

The existing manager’s accommodation will be utilised as a staff area.

The planning documents state that the proposals have been designed to offer a safer and more enjoyable experience for the live-in manager, adding that the existing accommodation has been condemned by the fire risk assessors.

Wells group in bid for Old Deanery A GROUP of people from Wells’ arts and heritage organisations were among those who put in offers to buy The Old Deanery on Cathedral Green.

The Grade I listed building is being sold by the Diocese of Bath and Wells, with an asking price of £2.5 million. Prospective buyers were asked to submit bids for it by September 12. One of the proposals came from a Wells consortium including Bill Lloyd, the Director of Cedars

Hall, with the aim of saving it for the community. He said: “We decided that we simply must try to organise the purchase The Old Deanery for public use, or regret a missed opportunity.”

Offers were due to be considered at the Bishop’s Council meeting on September 26. The Diocese has been using The Old Deanery as offices for the last 80 years but will be moving to Flourish House at Cathedral Park next year.

Push to start new Residents’ Association A RESIDENTS’ Association is going to be formed in the Burcott Road area of Wells.

An initial meeting of residents to explore the idea was held at the Tramways club on September 9.

The proposed area it would cover is west of Strawberry Way as far as Burcott Lane, south of Portway and north of Glastonbury Road, including properties on these roads – an estimated 1,020 households.

The association would seek solutions to community issues and use the ‘power of numbers’ to make things happen.

“Participation is key and we are seeking input and ideas from local residents, including businesses, homeowners and renters,” said Nikki Dodds, who lives in Burcott Road.

“At the meeting at Tramways, we discussed how best to engage the wider community in sharing their ideas with us which will form the basis of a Residents’ Association.

“The next step is a campaign informing residents of the purpose of the Residents’ Association, offering different methods of participation, and to

Revised homes scheme welcomed PLANS to build ten homes on land in Ash Close rather than the 27 originally planned were welcomed at Wells City Council’s planning committee meeting on September 5.

A resident who lives in Ash Close spoke in support of the application for three twobedroom, one two-bedroom and six three-bedroom bungalows on the site of previously approved development.

Acting town clerk Steve Luck said that a lot of work went into the Wells Neighbourhood Plan previously and it went nowhere.

“The council should do it or not do it. We did it half and half last time and it got messy,” he said.

It was decided that the matter should go to full council to seek agreement on taking the plan further.

Work starts on new police station ‘hub’ WORK has started on a new police station at the Haskins Retail Centre in Shepton Mallet.

The Wells police enquiry office and response team, as well as the Frome response team, will be moving to the new station when it is completed; it is expected to open to the public in spring 2020.

The local neighbourhood policing team will remain in Wells and will be co-locating with Devon and Somerset Fire on their site at Burcott Road.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary has announced that planning applications for the required extension to the existing fire station building will be submitted shortly.

Chief Inspector Sharon Baker said: “The new police station will provide a hub for our police officers and PCSOs in the Mendips and we are looking forward to having a central and visible base.

“These plans don’t affect the number of officers or PCSOs in the surrounding communities, who will continue to work as they currently do. In fact they are becoming more visible by

increasingly patrolling on foot and by bike and completing paperwork in the community using laptops. Although the response team are moving to a new location it will not affect how quickly we can respond to 999 calls which will be answered and prioritised in the same way.”

Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “Local people from across the Mendip area continually tell me how important their neighbourhood policing team is to them.

“It is important that local officers are based in the community which is why we’ve made the decision to ensure Wells, Frome, Street and Shepton Mallet neighbourhood teams remain at the heart of their communities.

Wells Vets celebrate first birthday with Dog Show and Open Day on 19th October THE team at Wells Vets celebrate their first birthday this October, holding a Dog Show and Open Day to thank supporters old and new.

Since opening in late 2018, the practice has gone from strength to strength; with the team being overwhelmed by the support of clients and the community. Clients have been impressed with the excellent new facilities and the care and attention provided by the team.

Shepton & Wells Vets Small Animal Director Martin Law says: “We are delighted by how well the practice has been adopted by the Wells community. The team at Wells have done a fabulous job of meeting the needs of their clients, supported by the larger team at Shepton Vets. We look forward to what the next 12 months will bring.”

In celebration of their first year, Wells Vets are inviting the public to their Open Day on Saturday 19th October between 12pm - 3pm. The teams from Wells and Shepton Vets will be on hand with practice tours, children’s activities, face painting and refreshments. Volunteers

from Happy Landings, Cats Protection and the South West Chelonia Group will also be in attendance, talking about the work that they do.

The fun dog show will start at 1pm and costs £2 to enter with the proceeds split between our chosen charities for the day, Happy Landings and Cats Protection. There are five classes: Junior Handler, Prettiest Bitch, Most Handsome Dog, Waggiest Tail and Best Rescue, and the team look forward to meeting all the entrants.

Invitation to join working group SINCE it was established in July, the Climate Emergency Committee (CEC) of Wells City Council has made progress with the working groups whose aims are to provide members of the public and councillors with a forum to work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Cycling, Energy and Transport working groups are underway and at the last meeting of the committee, there was interest in establishing one for Biodiversity. CEC chair Sarah Briton said: “I am so pleased that there are three working

groups already established, and equally delighted that there is enthusiasm for Biodiversity. If there are Wells Voice readers who are interested in this then please do get in touch and we’ll get started with an initial meeting. It will be great to publicise the steps we can take to ensure a rich soil, plant, insect and animal environment.”

SPECULATION over the causes of multiple pigeon deaths in the city has sparked wider concerns for the wellbeing of birdlife generally in Wells.

Judith Ludovino, a Wells businesswoman, says she has noticed a marked decline in smaller species such as tits, finches, chiffchaffs, woodpeckers, collared doves, thrushes and blackbirds this year. Waking up to the sound of birdsong would appear to be a thing of the past in the Glastonbury Road area: “For the first time in the two decades I have lived here there is no morning chorus to start the day. The only birds thriving seem to be the jackdaws and magpies,” she said.

England for the RSPB, said that a healthy population of magpies is an indication of a healthy population of smaller birds.

“There is no causal link between a reduction in numbers of smaller birds and an increase in birds such as magpies,” he said. “Nationally, things are looking good for blue tits, goldfinches and long-tailed tits, all of whose numbers are on the increase compared to previous years.”

He suggested that a decline in numbers in a particular locality such as Wells is more likely to be linked to pressure from development leading to a loss of habitat, together with the use of pesticides and herbicides in modern farming methods.

Actions agreed to back climate goals MENDIP District Council’s Cabinet has approved a series of actions which can be implemented quickly to support the council’s climate change goals.

This follows the declaration of a Climate and Ecological Emergency by the council earlier this year, and the creation of a dedicated portfolio of Strategic Policy and Climate Change.

This portfolio has been taken on by one of Wells’ district councillors, Tom Ronan, who said: “I believe strongly that environmental concerns need to be the first priority for national and local government and I am keen to work alongside councillors from all parties to achieve this. We can be part of the solution even at a district level. The new portfolio established by the council, which I am delighted to be leading on, is a really positive step, it shows that the council is clear in its commitment to the declaration that was made earlier this year.”

The council has also created a new officer post of Climate Change and Resilience Officer.

The new officer will work with

the council’s newly formed cross party working group, the Climate and Ecological Emergency Group, and will be responsible for engaging and supporting community activities to deliver the carbon neutral pledge, as well as working closely with partners across the district to deliver this target.

The short-, mid- and long-term action plans are based around the topics of behavioural change, energy, built environment, waste and water, transportation, food and nature and money. These will then feed into a climate change action plan and the wider climate change strategy.

The actions approved in September in support of this include: n A review of Glyphosate usage within the district (on MDC owned or managed land). n Tree provision now and for the future. n Wild flowering distribution. n Increase on-site recycling facilities at the council offices. n Reduction in CO2 and increase in renewable energy provisions on site.

Article about waste ‘incorrect’ SOMERSET Waste Partnership has rubbished a claim that plastic waste from Mendip is being illicitly burnt on open dumps in Indonesia.

A Daily Telegraph report said that household recycling waste sent by British councils is burnt on unauthorised dumps, poisoning children with toxic fumes.

Naming some of the local authorities, the article said: “Councils that send waste to Indonesia include Mendip District Council in Somerset, which according to a freedom of information request, exported almost 800 tonnes of plastic waste to Indonesia in 2018/19.”

But a Somerset Waste Partnership spokesman said: “The article published in late August was incorrect, as the figure quoted for Mendip was for the whole of Somerset,

and what we exported was a limited amount of high-quality plastic bottles to be recycled by a legitimate company, when the material highlighted in the article was plastic film – a contaminated mixture of plastic bags and food wrappers – that Somerset has never collected and clearly came from elsewhere in the UK. “We track where every tonne of recycling goes, and the companies reprocessing it. More than 90 per cent of all materials recycled by Somerset residents – including plastics – are reprocessed in the UK, and more than half of it, including some plastic, is recycled in Somerset itself.

“Of the remaining eight per cent or so, half is recycled in Europe and the rest, including some cardboard and clothes, goes elsewhere.”

Showroom hosts prestigious paint launch PAINT and wallpaper supplier City Decorating Supplies of Wells was the site of a special event on September 20 at its new shop and showroom.

Having moved from Union Street to larger premises in Tucker Street, near Tesco, they now have more space to stock and showcase their products.

Balloons and bubbly were present to celebrate the launch of paint manufacturer Farrow & Ball’s latest collection ‘Colour By Nature’ that has been developed in association with the Natural History Museum. Customers received goodie bags as well as a glass of fizz, and there were demonstrations of the new colours by Farrow & Ball’s South West business development manager Magdalena Bieth.

City Decorating Supplies owner Mike Tucker said: “We’re a premium stockist for Farrow & Ball so we are always involved in the launch of their new colours.”

FOLLOWING the serious pollution incident along a 15km stretch of the River Sheppey at the beginning of August, the Environment Agency continues to monitor the river’s recovery.

Electrofishing surveys will be carried out by specially trained officers at five different sites, most of which have been surveyed in the past. This will allow for data comparisons.

An electric current is passed through the water which causes the fish to swim momentarily towards a hand-held net so that they can be caught. They are identified, measured and given a health-check before being returned to the water. The fish are not harmed and recover quickly.

Mike Dunning, Environment Agency communications officer South West, said: “We’ll be looking at the numbers and species of fish caught compared to previous years. This will help us understand the condition of the river in terms of fish and how many fish we will need to restock in the near future.”

He added that the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and therefore the Agency is not in a position to comment on the source of the pollution.

“All evidence is being gathered and carefully studied and if necessary, enforcement action will be taken against those responsible,” he said.

Call for marketing help as growth plans announced

Festival organisers in tribute to patron WELLS Theatre Festival organisers have paid tribute to their patron and local resident, James Cellan Jones, who has died at the age of 88 following a stroke.

The renowned film, television and theatre director is particularly associated with the ‘Classic Serial’ during the golden age of BBC drama. Two of his most ambitious and successful directorial adaptations are The Forsyte Saga (1967) and The Fortunes of War (1987); and he is also noted for his awardwinning productions of Jennie: Lady Randolph Churchill (1974).

He also directed the awardwinning TV sitcom A Fine Romance starring the festival’s founding patron Dame Judi Dench alongside her late husband Michael Williams.

Mr Cellan Jones had been head of plays at BBC Television, chairman of BAFTA, and chairman of the Directors Guild of Great Britain.

His son Rory Cellan-Jones is a well known BBC journalist. His

other son, Simon, is a director.

Mr Cellan Jones became patron of the Wells Theatre Festival in June 2018, joining founding patrons Dame Judi Dench and Sir Richard Eyre. He acted as mentor to the young cast members of the community productions of Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing.

The festival’s artistic director, Ros Johnson, said: “We are so honoured to have had Jim as our patron. Not only was he one of this country’s most respected directors but he was also passionate about encouraging young people to experience high quality theatre for themselves and passing on his knowledge and expertise to young people starting out in the business. We will all miss him terribly and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

Ros and her husband Neil, the theatre festival’s associate director, were due to attend Mr Cellan Jones’ funeral at Pilton Church on September 28 on behalf of the festival.

WELLS Theatre Festival organisers would like to hear from anyone with marketing and digital expertise who would like to volunteer their time to the festival.

The festival has plans to further expand and develop the event in 2020 which will run from Thursday, July 9, until Sunday, July 12, and will bring a third consecutive season of world class professional theatre to Wells.

Over the course of four days, this year’s festival entertained almost 1,700 people of which just over 400 were primary school children, and the organisers plan to double those numbers in 2020.

The festival has plans to continue growth and to increase visibility and awareness through its digital channels, marketing activity and PR. The search is on to replace founding

board member and volunteer marketing manager Lin Dickens who has relocated to Devon with her family.

Ros Johnson, artistic director of the festival, said: “We are all so grateful to Lin for her contribution to the festival, she brought with her such inspiring drive and commitment. We need to find an individual who can work with us as a member of the Wells Theatre Festival Board or a creative agency with capacity to offer pro bono support and take the lead in taking our digital marketing and out of home presence to the next level.”

Wells Fire Brigade brought all three of their fire appliances to show off to the visiting public, while the police were on hand to offer advice and provide a popular bike security marking

service. The ambulance service, St John Ambulance and Wells First Responders combined to show their expertise and provide CPR demonstrations.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution were well represented with information about their prospective new station at Weston-super-Mare and gave out water safety advice for those indulging in sports from paddleboarding to kayaking.

Warning of need to listen to lifeguards THE work that beach lifeguards do to keep people safe has been highlighted by Wells resident Sharon Edmonds, who was nearly swept out to sea while on holiday in Cornwall.

Sharon, centre co-ordinator of the Elim Connect Centre in Portway, Wells, takes up the story: “We were bodyboarding at Widemouth Bay near Bude and although we were making sure we kept within the flagged zones, and hearing repeated reminders from the guards about the strong currents and to not go out of your depth, I decided, against the advice of my 11-year-old son, to board over one last wave before turning and surfing back in.

“I turned around after pleasantly floating for about 20 seconds and saw how far I was from the beach. I tried to swim back but the current was really strong and I wasn’t getting anywhere.

“Feeling mildly concerned I was just about to try and go with the current that was pushing me to the left to see if could make it to some rocks about 100 metres away when a young lifeguard scooted up on his surfboard and asked if I needed some help. I replied, feeling rather silly, that I was absolutely fine thank you, and he suggested giving me a ‘lift’ back in.

“I initially declined his gallant offer, feeling more ashamed by the moment, but when he asked if I was sure I decided to swallow my rather dented pride, hopped on his board and within a few seconds I was back to a safe depth.

“After thanking him profusely I made my way back to my family, who were by now searching the waves for me, and received a dressing down from all of them, especially my son.

“It certainly bought home to me how quickly you can get into trouble; thank goodness I had a bodyboard and wetsuit.

“It’s so important to listen to the guards as they know what they’re talking about and I will definitely never ignore their advice again.

“I did see quite a few people with inflatable dinghies, rings and other things more suited to pools who were swiftly told to take them out of the water. There have been a few stories recently about people being washed out to sea within minutes of getting caught in the currents.

“I am eternally grateful to the young lifeguard, and all of them who work so hard, and will behave myself in future and listen to my son, who is undoubtedly more sensible than I am!”

Precentor declines role as dean A CLERIC at Wells Cathedral has withdrawn his acceptance of a new role as Dean of St George’s Cathedral in Perth, Australia, after an investigation was launched into Facebook messages he is said to have posted.

The Precentor of Wells Cathedral, Canon Nicholas Jepson-Biddle, was due to take up his new appointment early next year.

But a licence from the Archbishop of Perth, the Most Rev Kay Goldsworthy, was withheld as inquiries were made into the Facebook posts.

Newspaper The West Australian reported that one, posted in 2012, said: “OK,

enough with the Boy Seamen already. I say, enough.”

Wells Cathedral said in a statement: “Wells Cathedral has been aware of the inquiry by the Archbishop of Perth, Australia, and subsequent media interest following the announcement of the Cathedral’s Precentor, Nicholas Jepson-Biddle, as the new Dean of Perth. We have subsequently learned that Canon Jepson-Biddle has taken the difficult decision to withdraw his acceptance of the post. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Nick and his family at this difficult time. He has the full support of the Chapter of Wells as we focus on the work to be done here in Wells.”

Lunch to benefit four more good causes FOUR more SOUPer troupers will walk away with a cheque on Saturday, October 5.

Each good cause will also have the opportunity to publicise their work.

The event is Wells SOUP, the quarterly grant-giving lunch where people enjoy tasty food and good company in the Connect Centre at the junction of Chamberlain Street and Portway.

It starts at 1pm and lasts about an hour.

SOUP follows a similar but gentler pattern to TV’s Dragons’ Den with charities the beneficiaries rather than entrepreneurs.

“SOUP is a brilliant way to help improve where we live,” said Ross Young from Wells Independents, who organise the event.

“It is about bringing people together, having fun and

The four good causes taking part are Blue School Plastic Free, Alzheimer’s Society, Promise Works and Stoma Heroes.

The two choices of soup will be made by the talented young chefs at Wells Blue School.

The school’s catering manager Lisa Western said: “Our students are part of the community and we at the school like to give something back by supporting Wells SOUP.”

Food festival will feature over 175 stalls THERE is an opportunity to give the taste buds a treat at this year’s Wells Food Festival, a freeto-enter, foodie, fun day out for all the family.

The event takes place on Sunday, October 13, from 10.30am-4.30pm, when visitors can graze their way around the Artisan Market which stretches from the Market Place into the Recreation Ground.

Festival organiser, Jon Abbott, said: “The line-up of stalls is looking really exciting.

Over 175 have booked this year, and there really is something for everyone. We are delighted to welcome start-ups such as Reckless Desserts, a Somerset artisan patisserie workshop, as well producers that have been with us since the start, including Worleys Cider and Somerset Charcuterie.”

This year, nearly 13,000 products were entered from 100 countries. There are three levels of star ratings, awarded after a rigorous selection process involving many hours of blind tasting by hundreds of judges.

Reminder to parents about school places SOMERSET parents are being urged to make sure they apply for school places online and in time.

Whether a child is starting school for the first time, or transferring to their next school, applications need to be made through the Somerset County Council’s website www.somerset. gov.uk/admissions The deadline for parents to submit applications for secondary school places is October 31 – that is for children moving from primary to secondary school or middle to upper school in September 2020.

For primary school admissions – which includes children starting school for the first time or moving from infant to junior and first to middle schools – the deadline is January 15, 2020.

Although ‘chaser’ texts and letters will be sent to parents on the council’s database who have not yet applied, the responsibility for getting applications in on time lies with parents and guardians.

Councillor Faye Purbrick, Cabinet Member for Education and Transformation, said: “I would urge everyone to submit three preferences, including their local schools. Once you have chosen your three schools, it is essential that applications are submitted before the deadline to avoid risking missing out on a preferred place.”

As well as linking to an online application form, the www. somerset.gov.uk/admissions web page holds related information including a directory of schools, catchment areas and school admissions policy.

Gem of a garden opened to visitors VISITORS were given a rare chance to enjoy a hidden garden in Wells.

They were able to savour this green oasis at Abbeyfield House in glorious weather for a tea party.

“Visitors are always amazed by the size and length of the garden,” said Isobel Panton, the administrator of this home for older people in New Street.

“A couple of years ago it was somewhat overgrown and

neglected, but through hard work from Jane of Growing Roots and Adrian Howarth the garden has been transformed into a lovely tranquil space that our residents and visitors can enjoy.”

Best of photography and art on show AN exciting new photography and art show is coming to Wells in October.

The Photo Optics & Art Show will include talks from guest speaker Rod Fountain of Rod Fountain Photography, who worked for 16 years on Top Gear; demonstrations of the latest camera equipment, binoculars and art products; and special deals for anything bought at the event.

The show is being organised by photographic suppliers DH James and framing specialists Somerset Frames, both based in Sadler Street.

It will take place in the Swan Hotel on Saturday, October 26, from 9am-4pm, and entry is free.

“There will be lots going on with events, a speaker, demonstrators and deals,” said Chris Goodwin, joint owner of DH James with Nick James, Ann and Hugh Goodwin.

TV reporter visits to film portraits display

By Clare Blackmore BBC Points West’s Somerset reporter Clinton Rogers visited the Wells and Mendip Museum to film the Phillips Portraits Collection, which is on display in the exhibition room until October 4.

He was fascinated to see the beautiful photographs as well as finding out about some of the stories of the people captured in time by Bert Phillips.

The exhibition opened at the museum on September 21 and has nearly 1,000 pictures on display.

Colin Price of Wells told the story of the discovery of a picture of his great aunt, Lena Stevens, daughter of a Wells chimney sweep, Albert Stevens, whose portrait is in the collection. He had six brothers all of whom went off to the First World War, and two of whom did not return.

Visitors to the exhibition have already added to the research done on some of the photographs and more knowledge is being added to this unique collection all the time.

Zoe Newton of the Swan Hotel, whose help in reproducing the photographs has been invaluable, is very proud that some of the portraits show the staff of the hotel from around the 1890s and 1900s, which she says adds to the social history of the hotel as well as to knowledge of the historic fabric of the building.

Wingwalk raises funds to thank charity DARING Laura Williams of Croscombe took to the sky on a wing walk in September to remember her brother-in-law Nick Bird and to show the family’s gratitude to Dorothy House Hospice.

Nick lived in South Horrington for nearly 20 years before moving last November with his wife Kelly and daughters Maisy and Molly to Hinton Blewett, where they had built their dream family home. Sadly, Nick died four months later at the age of just 46 after a battle with cancer.

Dorothy House supported Nick in his final months, enabling him to stay in his new home where he wanted to be with his family. The hospice continues to support the family as they adjust to life without him by their side.

Laura decided to thank the charity with her fundraising wing walk, originally setting out with a target of £2,000. However, she was increasingly overwhelmed by people’s generosity, and has now reached more than £3,000, with the final total still growing.

New display on history of mills WELLS once had five – and possibly six – mills which stood along the St Andrew’s Stream which runs through the city.

The Wells Mills Interest Group has created a display which tells the story of all these mills as well as describing the watercourses of Wells. Last year it ran for only one day, at the Town Hall, as part of Heritage Open Days. It is now back by popular demand.

An updated version will be exhibited at Wells & Mendip Museum from October 24 until November 16. The Museum is open from 10am-5pm, Monday to Saturday.

There will be free entry to the exhibition only. This exhibition is liberally illustrated with lots of fascinating images.

Affordable craft workshops a taste of things to come A NEW programme of affordable creative craft taster workshops is being launched in Wells in October to mark the launch of Project Factory Community Interest Company.

After the positive feedback received from the Wake Up Wells activities in 2018, Project Factory was launched to build on the voluntary work that initial project had started.

The organisation has a number of ambitious aims including to build partnerships and encourage community collaboration, offer informal education opportunities to grow skills and confidence, and develop a programme of community events and forums to encourage communication.

As a Community Interest

Company, Project Factory will be able to access funding opportunities and this includes funding which has already been secured from Somerset Skills & Learning to run these workshops making them accessible to all.

Workshop themes will include macramé, embroidery, knitting, woodwork, mosaic making, as well as health and wellbeing coaching.

Project Factory will be working with Wells in Mosaic to give people the opportunity to contribute to creating a piece of community art to be displayed in Wells.

The Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned four mills which belonged to the Bishop of Wells, and the city had two silk factories at one time. The exhibition will reveal all this and more, including the mystery of a St John Street Mill and its possible link with the Rose and Crown.

Following a number of requests, the Mills Interest Group is currently incorporating its display materials into a booklet, which will be published through and sold by the museum.

The group hopes to be able to launch it to coincide with the opening of the exhibition.

Shop starts selling new range made by hand in Wells studio A UNIQUE range of cushions hand-made by curtain and soft furnishing maker Karen Dickson have gone on sale at the Kitty Banks cafe and gift shop in Wells Market Place.

Alongside the cushions, Karen will soon be adding a range of footstools, which will be offered on an order and make service with choices of fabric, finish and size.

She has also started footstool workshops at The Hive in Shepton Mallet for people who want to upholster one for themselves.

The next, on November 2, has already sold out, but more are planned.

“I’ve been doing this for years and people often tell me that they would love to learn how to do it too,” said Karen, who owns and runs KD Interiors of Wells.

“My own footstools are totally unique as they are made by hand from the carcass to the finished product here in Wells.

You’ll never find one the same anywhere else.”

Karen – trained to diploma standard in curtain making and soft furnishings – also offers lessons in how to make cushions and Roman blinds.

“I always dreamed of having my own business,” she said.

“KD Interiors of Wells was born out of my love for textiles, colour and home styling, and branded as my own name as I am a one-woman business, and adore living in Wells.

“I had sewn for many years making my own curtains and soft furnishing along with decorating and styling of my own homes.

I decided the time was right to realise my dream and utilise my skills and passion.”

Working from her home studio in Wells, she hand sews curtains, Roman blinds, cushions, throws, window seats, pelmets, tie backs and more. She says she enjoys working with customers to deliver products they are pleased with, and gets a lot of satisfaction from her work.

“I just love what I do,” she said.

SOMERSET Clinical Commissioning Group outlined plans to merge the two GP practices in Wells to the Somerset Primary Care Commissioning Committee at a meeting on September 5.

As Wells Voice reported last month, Wells Health Centre and Wells City Practice aim to become one practice to help them meet the present and future primary care needs of their patients.

No objections were raised at the meeting, so an official application will now be submitted, with a decision expected in the next two months.

Fair showcase for work of charities THE One World Fair, organised by the Mid Somerset Oxfam Group, is returning to the Wells Town Hall for its sixth consecutive year on Saturday, October 19.

Now a well-established feature in Wells’ annual calendar, the One World Fair is an opportunity for local and national charities to show how they all come together and work for the common good of a fairer and better world for everyone.

Michael Eavis will again be the guest of honour at the event.

The founder of the Glastonbury Festival, Michael is a long-time supporter of Oxfam, and Oxfam is proud to be one of the festival’s worthy causes.

Each charity at the fair will have its own stall and will use it to showcase its particular cause. Some will be raising funds by selling gifts, books, cakes, handicrafts or fairly traded goods. Others will want to enthuse visitors about their causes and projects and will be very ready to talk about

their activities. As well as Oxfam, stallholders will include Christian Aid, Save the Children, Amnesty, Send A Cow, Dementia Action, Royal Voluntary Service, Fairtrade Wells, Ethiopiaid and many more. Some organisations are national or international, many are local.

Upstairs, the OWF Diner will be serving hot vegetarian lunches, or at the tea bar, tea, coffee and homemade cakes will be served throughout the day.

The event directory that can be picked up at the door has a 50p-off lunch coupon.

During the day a dulcimer player and a ukulele group will be entertaining visitors as they browse the stalls or enjoy a break in the upstairs cafes.

Entry to the One World Fair, which runs from 10am-4pm, is free; visitors can donate to Oxfam if they wish.

Poppy Concert launching appeal ON Friday, October 25, at 7.30pm in Wells Town Hall, the Wells Branch of the Royal British Legion will present the 98th Annual Poppy Concert to launch the start of the Poppy Appeal.

Music will be provided by Wells City Band including the usual favourites Entry of the Standards and Fantasia on

British Sea Songs. This year the concert will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

There will be refreshments available and a raffle.

A wide range of land can be registered as a Town or Village Green

Even ports and car parks can be registered as Town or Village Green

VILLAGE greens are something that most people may have seen or accessed but would you have thought that a port could be a village green?

The Court of Appeal has recently decided that a port is capable of being registered as a Town or Village Green under The Commons Act 2006. In this case, the landowner operated a private port which had an open quay.

A fence was erected along the open section of the quayside. The council then applied to register the area as a Town or Village Green on the basis it had been used by local people for various activities.

The landowner had put up signs and argued that recreational use of the land

would have involved the commission of a criminal offence. The Court of Appeal however confirmed the Town or Village Green registration.

The Court of Appeal further stated that a wide range of land is capable of being registered as a Town or Village Green. A car park has been successfully registered in the past.

There is of course a criteria that needs to be met for a piece of land to be registered as a Town or Village Green but it is perhaps a warning to landowners that appropriate advice should be sought to manage the risk of their land being registered as a Town or Village Green.

Keen fundraiser set for 100th marathon A RUNNING enthusiast who has clocked up more than 3,000 miles to raise money for Cats Protection is preparing to complete her 100th marathon.

Emma Challis has raised over £2,000 in sponsorship for the Glastonbury & Wells branch of the charity over the past six years.

The 46-year-old, who is also a volunteer cat fosterer for the branch, will complete her 100th marathon in October at the Clarendon Marathon in Winchester.

Keen runner Emma Challis With a quarter of her runs being ultra-marathons of up to 45 miles, along with other triathlons and park runs, Emma estimates she has covered more than 3,000 miles to raise funds for Cats Protection.

Her achievement is all the more remarkable because she suffers from Factor V Leiden,

a genetic condition that causes potentially deadly blood clots.

She said: “I’ve always loved running, but when I turned 40 I became more focused and started running marathons. I had no idea I had a health condition until three years ago when I developed some blood clots.

It could have put me off, but I started on medication and found I was more determined than ever to continue running.

“I used to be a veterinary nurse and I’m a huge cat lover, so I’ve always raised money for our local branch of Cats Protection. It gives me a huge amount of satisfaction to know that the money I raise will go to help give cats in need a second chance in life.”

As well as running for the charity, Emma, of Shepton Mallet, devotes her spare time to fostering cats for the charity’s Glastonbury & Wells branch, caring for anything up to 10 cats each year.

She said: “No two cats are the same, and it’s always a huge privilege to get to know cats while they’re with me. And it’s really special when they go to their forever homes, as I know they’ll bring so much joy to their new homes.”

Artist offers opportunity to spend time among clouds SOMERSET artist Miriam Sheppard set herself a big challenge for this year’s Somerset Art Weeks Festival.

She has taken over the loft space at Heritage Courtyard Gallery and Studios in Wells to create a site-specific installation using graphite on translucent paper to fill a space in which visitors can relax with their “head in the clouds”, while enjoying the ambient soundtrack specifically written for the exhibition.

She is also showing new works featuring her luminous cloud and skyscapes.

The exhibition opened on September 21 and will continue until October 6.

Miriam said before the opening: “I have had this idea at the back of my mind for some time and I am excited by the prospect of seeing it come to life.

“This is the largest project I have undertaken and I am enjoying the practical and artistic challenges of working on a much larger scale to fill a unique space.

“Somerset Art Weeks seemed the perfect time to do this. Especially as this year’s theme is Silver as it’s the Silver Anniversary of Somerset Art Weeks and what do all clouds have?”

Charity seeking host families

Book warns of foreign perils

HUNDREDS of youngsters living in the contaminated villages around Chernobyl, where an explosion caused the biggest nuclear accident ever in 1986, have come to the Wells area for a recuperative holiday with local families over the years, thanks to the charity, Children of Chernobyl Wells.

The charity, formed in 1991, brings children to the city where families act as hosts for three weeks, helped by local schools and businesses. The children, aged from nine to 12, also receive free help from a local dentist and optician, as well as receiving any emergency medical attention.

The charity’s trustees are already planning the 2020 visit, which is being promoted for the first three weeks of July.

“Organisation of the visit has its challenges,” said charity chairman, John Price.

“Finding host families in and around Wells takes a lot of time and effort as well as putting together the programme of daily activities including the visits to the dentist and optician. But all the hard work is certainly worth it. The children have a wonderful break and the host families have a memorable experience.”

A team of three trustees have returned recently from a fact-finding visit to the villages around Chernobyl. The main purpose of the week-long trip was to update the charity on conditions in the region where it operates.

“Our charity works very close to the exclusion zone around Chernobyl,” said one of

WELLS writer Gemma Dunn is celebrating after her book – a cautionary tale about going to teach English in China – became a hit in the Amazon book charts.

Having worked as an accountant for 20 years she quit her job in March, vowing to make an impact with her time, and has written this book as a first step.

She has dedicated the book to her sister, who died when she was 40, having been inspired by her to “do more with her life”.

I Was Sold in China tells of her grim experiences when she applied to teach English via an online TEFL course.

Her promised job turned out to not exist; illegal work visas were issued; her passport was confiscated; she was kept in squalid living conditions and locked in her room with nothing to eat or drink; and she had the majority of her wage taken off her, having effectively been ‘sold’ to an unknown Chinese recruiter.

“I did a huge amount of research into the company I signed up with,” she said.

“It was everything I wanted – but what I got was my worst nightmare.”

She added: “I followed the corporate path for many years, doing the 9-5 with a sensible job with a good wage – but I don’t want my life to be all about accounts, and whilst I have shared my story to warn others of the perils of throwing yourself into certain situations I also want people to know that this will not stop me continuing to experience new cultures – but from now on I’m doing it on my terms.”

Trustees meet up with local school teacher and the charity’s Belarusian representative at Zashirye School the visiting trustees, Jo Brown, secretary of the charity.

“Things continue to be very challenging for families and we were able to identify a number of areas where we will be able to improve our help to these families and the local community.”

The charity not only brings youngsters to the Wells area each year, but sends funds and support to two local hospitals and school.

“Wells Cathedral School and Wells Blue School have both worked with the charity from the very beginning in 1991; we are very grateful for their help and support,” said John.

The charity is now actively recruiting new host families for July 2020, and is asking people to consider whether they are able to make room in their family

It says the children’s immune systems receive a boost during their three-week recuperative holiday in England; this is measurable for up to two years.

Raft thrills and spills entertain crowds ON August Bank Holiday Monday, the annual Moat Boat Races took place on the wonderful setting of the Bishop’s Palace Moat.

Jointly organised by the City of Wells Lions Club and 1955 (City of Wells) Air Cadets, this fun event has always been a great family favourite with the people of Wells.

This year, large amount of weed in the Moat slowed things down a bit – sometimes nearly beaching the people manning the safety canoes.

The event caters for both adult and junior teams, though for the past few years, the only junior teams that have entered have been from other Air Cadet squadrons – some travelling up from Honiton and down from Bristol. Other youth organisations which might fancy the challenge of building a raft and then racing it on the Moat for next year are asked to contact the organisers by emailing 1955@aircadets.org.

The planned fly-past of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s C-47 Dakota was cancelled, as the aircraft developed a mechanical fault the day before, but an application has been made for another aircraft fly-past for next year.

“Many thanks to all those mad and crazy folks who turned up on the day to race, and also the loud and enthusiastic crowd that cheered them on,” said Flt Lt John Blackburn, Officer Commanding – 1955 (City of Wells) Air Cadets.

“Still, we made a lot of money and made a lot of people laugh so it wasn’t wasted. We’ll be back next year with a new – hopefully more waterproof – raft, Proctology 2.”

Light good to glow thanks to repair cafe WHAT is not to like about a repair cafe?

The question is posed by Julie Wright of Sustainable Wells, who says: “It is exactly the place to take that item that you have been meaning to get fixed but didn’t have the know-how yourself, or any idea who would do it for less than a king’s ransom.

“You don’t have to consign it to landfill and you don’t have to replace it with a costly new one.”

“I came across a ship light, made by my dad in the 1930s, then used by my daughter for an art GCSE project, which had been languishing in the loft for at least 25 years. The clever man in the photo, Brian Sorensen, made it all work again and ‘Fiat Lux’ – bringing back many renewed memories.

“If you can’t make the October date, there’s another on Saturday, December 7, and every few months after that. Let’s get back to making do and mending, in our combined effort to be more consumer conscious.”

Makeover for care home suite

Screening of road trip film

THE Fletcher House care home in Wells has unveiled a new look for its Avalon Suite communal space.

The objective of the the makeover, which was guided by residents, was to improve the space and provide residents with a stimulating and enriching environment, which from a dementia perspective can play a big role in helping to reduce triggers and promote positive behaviours.

The makeover also incorporated a new calm and tranquil zone within the suite to assist those who enjoy suitable reflective or personal space.

A FILM that takes audiences on a moving road trip through the heart of contemporary Native American life is being screened at Wells Film Centre. Neither Wolf Nor Dog (12A) has been a hit in the USA and can be seen in Wells on October 13 and 15.

The film stars 95-year-old Dave Bald Eagle, a Native American actor, who has since died. It is adapted from the book of the same name by Kent Nerburn, and tells the story of what happened when Nerburn was summoned to an Indian reservation by an old man keen to record some of his memories, and taken on a life-changing adventure.

Concert raises £1,500 for charity A WELLS charity concert has raised £1,500 for Prostate Cancer UK. The Pink Bra’ss band’s annual concert took place at Wells Town Hall on Saturday, July 6, and included performances from the Choir Wincanton cornet soloist Aidan Johnson.

Specsavers at 60a High Street in Wells sponsored the concert for the fourth year running.

Pam Fisher, a member of Pink Bra’ss and optical assistant at Specsavers Wells, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Specsavers has sponsored us again, helping to raise £1,500 for Prostate Cancer UK. “We held our first concert in 2016 for Breast Cancer Now, followed by the Stephen Sykes Appeal in 2017. We raised £3,500 for the appeal, which helped to fund a stem cell transplant for our trombonist who had Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

He’s on the road to recovery and was able to take part in this year’s concert, which everyone was over the moon about.

Care service rated highly by regulator

BLUEBIRD Care Mendip has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and social care services in England.

It is a significant achievement for the care service, which provides personal care to people living in their own homes, with only two per cent of home care providers across the UK receiving the rating.

The rating was awarded following a comprehensive inspection in June 2019 that included visiting service users in their homes.

In the report, CQC inspectors praised Bluebird Care Mendip – which has an office in Wells – for being a service which “went over and above what was expected of a community care provider”.

The CQC also highlighted that people are supported fully in every step of their care, with Bluebird Care’s care professionals always “supporting people to express their views and be involved in making decisions about their care” and carrying out regular reviews of care plans.

Relatives and loved ones are also included in the decision-making process, which inspectors found particularly pertinent. One service user told inspectors: “I have full control over everything, my life is my own and [the service] support me to do what I want.”

The care service was also rated ‘Outstanding’ in the key categories of providing a responsive service and a well-led service. The service’s responsiveness included always tailoring services “to meet the needs of individuals” and “ensure flexibility, choice and continuity of care”.

Bluebird Care Mendip’s individual care professionals were also singled out for praise, with inspectors finding that all staff “were passionate about providing a high standard of person-centred care which promoted people’s independence”.

Overall, inspectors said that the team’s care professionals remain committed to finding ways to improve and have a positive impact on people’s lives.

Masen Naidoo, director of Bluebird Care Mendip, said: “We are thrilled to have received an ‘Outstanding’ rating from the CQC, with a report that is testament to the hard work and dedication shown by our care team every single day. We look forward to maintaining our passion for providing high-quality care that improves people’s lives as we move forward.”

COMMUNICATION is simply the act of transferring information from one person or place to another with the desired outcome or goal of understanding.

This is a simple definition, but when we think about how we might communicate the subject becomes much more complex. There are various categories of communication and more than one may occur at any time. It facilitates the spread of knowledge and forms relationships between people. We are all unique and communicate in ways we understand.

When we communicate we expect to be listened to, and we can check someone understood to ensure they have listened.

Listening is harder than we think, and listening without being judgemental can be even harder.

Non-judgemental listening means listening to understand. It involves putting your own views and values to one side and being careful not to criticise or judge the person you are hearing.

It means accepting them as a person and accepting the issues that they are struggling with.

We all spend a great deal of time listening to what people say.

At least that’s the impression we give.

Much of the time the words we hear trigger a reaction in our own minds. This means we have switched off what the person is really saying and are following our own train of thought.

As the world is busy we often feel restricted with our time, but giving time to listen is important. Making time might mean remembering to phone, or offering to have a coffee or a meal out. It could mean arranging to visit. This can make a big difference.

We can support our nonjudgemental listening by accepting people exactly as they are, and staying aware of your own feelings and thoughts without voicing them. Listen without interrupting and respond only if there is a pause.

Keep eye contact comfortable.

So next time someone is talking, ensure you are actively listening without being judgemental. Being aware of how you are listening will support your communication skills.

Festival that takes a different view of death A Festival of Death and Dying is coming to Wells. Thursa Wilde and Henrietta Lang explain more A FESTIVAL of Death, how morbid, you might think. For most of us, death is something we dread and avoid talking about. But what if we were to look at it differently? Consider the Mexican Day of the Dead.

Every year Mexicans fill their cemeteries with music, food and life to honour their deceased.

With the mortality rates stubbornly at 100 per cent is it time to retire the death taboo and make the Day of the Dead (November 2) an opportunity to celebrate the lives of those we loved... and, maybe, even take a look at what lies ahead for every single one of us?

This is exactly the intention of the Festival of Death and Dying.

Art group marks 40th anniversary THE SODA (Society for Disabled Artists) society of Wells celebrated 40 years since the founding of the first SODA group by hosting a party and exhibition of members’ work in July.

Quite a few members of the public visited during the one-day exhibition at the SSAL centre in

Portway Avenue, and some of the artwork was sold.

Christmas markets back for fifth year THE Christmas Artisan Markets will return to The Bishop’s Palace in Wells again in November, for the fifth year running.

A TALENTED violinist at Wells Cathedral School has just returned from a star-studded premiere in Canada of the film in which he stars.

Year 9 student Luke Doyle was invited to attend the celebrated Toronto International Film Festival as a key member of the cast of upcoming film The Song of Names, which premiered at the festival.

Luke was joined on the red carpet by fellow actor Tim Roth, as well as Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore, who wrote the score.

Luke was also interviewed about his role in the film for the Canadian media.

The Song of Names tells the story of two boys, Martin and Dovidl – a nine-year-old violinist of extraordinary promise –

As well as his acting talents, Luke was chosen for his musical skills as a young violinist.

First visit by recorder orchestra A RECORDER chamber orchestra with members from all over the UK and Europe will be making their first visit to Wells in the new year.

Recorders Incorporated will be giving a concert at St Cuthbert’s Church on Sunday, January 5, 2020, at 7.30pm.

The orchestra have no home base, and meet once a year to rehearse intensively for a few days and then perform a concert.

Their programmes have always been an eclectic mix of music, with large-scale contemporary pieces featuring a forest of big basses and even the occasional tiny garklein (the smallest recorder), combined

with renaissance works played on renaissance instruments.

The group was formed by Eileen Silcocks and their first meeting was in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, in 2007.

Musical director Tom Beets, who has directed Recorders Incorporated since 2016, is a world renowned recorder performer. He also leads masterclasses and workshops in UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the Far East and the USA. Tickets for the concert in Wells are £10 single admission, or £30 for a family ticket, available on the door and in advance from the church office.

Fundraiser that will help people in need

WELLS Vineyard Church is holding a fundraiser on October 5 for the two outreach projects it runs, Wells Foodbank and the Furniture Storehouse.

The event is a buffet supper with live sounds of the Sixties and Seventies and an auction of promises at the Elim Connect Centre, Portway.

Tickets priced £12 are available from Keith Rudyard by calling 07818 782026. People can take their own bottle, and soft drinks will be provided.

One of the beneficiaries, Wells Foodbank, distributes food to those in need on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Clients obtain a voucher from various agencies, then go to the church where they collect the food, which is donated

by Morrisons, Waitrose and Tesco customers as well as the stores themselves and many individuals.

From January 1 until August 31 this year the Foodbank had handed out 214 food parcels (5,900 meals), compared to 211 food parcels (6,100 meals) in the whole of 2018.

The Furniture Storehouse collects donated household items and distributes them to needy people through agencies such as Mendip YMCA, CAB, Mendip District Council, the Probation Service and Aster Properties.

“The goods are delivered free of charge using our three-and-ahalf-ton van. Running costs are high which are mainly paid for

by church members and some donations,” said storehouse manager Keith.

“The event on the October 5 is to raise urgently needed funds for these two projects. I am hoping that the people of Wells and surrounding areas will see that these two projects are vital and support this event.

“Should anyone not be able to attend but would like to send a donation, cheques, made out to Wells Vineyard Church, can be sent to Wells Vineyard Church, The Vineyard Centre, Unit 2, Keward Mill Trading Estate, Jocelyn Drive Wells, BA51DA. We are also looking for items to auction.

“We have two garages kindly loaned to us by Aster for storing household items and our church landlord has generously loaned us Unit 3 at Keward until such time as it is re-let. We may have to vacate this unit at short notice.

The new defibrillator ready for use in Easton

Defibrillator installed in village THE community of Easton, near Wells, now has 24-hour access to a defibrillator, installed at Wessex Water’s sewage pumping station in the village.

Due to the remote location, volunteer fundraisers from Easton Ladies Guild decided to buy the lifesaving device with the help of a grant from St Cuthbert Out Parish Council.

Site manager Ashley Pratt said: “After carrying out some security checks, we have installed the defibrillator on the wall of the pumping station.

“New signs have been put up, plus new lighting to allow for 24hour access to the unit.”

The parish council considers grant applications from local groups throughout the year.

Clerk Michele Exton said: “The council was able to provide a grant of £300 to Easton Ladies Guild towards the purchase of this defibrillator for the benefit of the local community.

“We’re extremely grateful to Wessex Water for allowing the defibrillator to be housed at their pumping station.”

The annual Henton Village Fete was held successfully on July 13, providing a fun afternoon for local families and generating funds for Henton church and nominated charity the Cinnamon Trust, which supports elderly, disabled and housebound people in looking after and rehoming their pets.

Mental health campaign with message to take an hour out YMCA Mendip & South Somerset is promoting the #IAMWHOLE 2019 campaign, an anti-stigma mental health campaign.

On October 10, World Mental Health Day, the organisation – which has an office in Wells – wants people to take a whole hour to themselves.

It is asking people to sign the online pledge at http://tiny.cc/ iamwhole and let them know what they will do. There are no costs involved or donation requested.

The #IAMWHOLE campaign has been developed in partnership with the NHS and YMCA, and aims to encourage young people to speak out and seek help by: 1. Starting conversations with young people about mental health.

2. Educating young people about mental health.

3. Encouraging young people to share their experiences of mental health difficulties.

Each year an estimated 20 per cent of children and young people worldwide experience mental health difficulties.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS YOUNG ARCHAEOLOGISTS’ CLUB AFTER introductions and handing out Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) badges and information to the children, we began our first session at Wells & Mendip Museum on September 7 with a short discussion and video about some our earliest ancestors, the Hunter Gatherers.

Following this, the children made a tour of the relevant exhibits in the museum, with a questionnaire, then a ‘handling session’ of real Stone Age artefacts from the museum such as flint arrow heads, antler picks, stone axes, stone knife blades and even a tiny child’s bracelet made from rounded pebbles threaded on twine.

After a refreshment break, the children (and some interested parents) went into the museum garden to watch archaeologist and flint knapper Mike Trevarthen demonstrate how to make a hand axe, scrapers and arrowheads from a large piece of flint, using only stones, and an antler ‘hammer’ to strike the flint. Children and adults alike enjoyed the session and after many, many questions, Mike made his way home to Dorset.

The next meeting of the club will be at the museum on October 5, when we shall be learning about ‘Cheddar Man’, the oldest skeleton in Britain, and his DNA connection with people in the area today.

We will also be creating cave art, painted stones and clay God/ Goddess figurines.

WELLS WI OUR speaker at the September meeting was the inspirational Nancy Dodd, holder of Pride of Somerset and Wells Journal awards and the first woman to receive the freedom of the city of Wells. Nancy was honoured in recognition of her lifelong voluntary work for Wells charities including Arthritis Care and MS, her fundraising work with the Somerset carnivals, and for keeping the residents of Fletcher House active over the years with socials and outings.

Nancy worked at Cow and Gate in Wells and met her husband through her involvement in the Somerset carnival circuit. She showed us

Nancy eventually became President of the County Carnival Association.

She told us that the judges love Wells because of the famous feast laid on for up to 100 of them in Seager Hall each year.

Nancy stressed the carnival’s important role in raising money for local charities including the mobile chemotherapy bus and riding for the disabled. She explained how expensive it is to host the carnival – it costs £100 to train each marshal – so she appealed to anyone connected to local charities to volunteer to help collect money on carnival night in return for a percentage of the takings.

Nancy told us about receiving the freedom of the city in 1996.

She showed us her citation from the mayor and the city council and told us that due to her strong faith she chose to receive her award at St Cuthbert’s Church in a special service devised by the diocese. She felt all the nice

things said about her by the councillor nominating her were the sort of things people don’t normally get to hear, because they are generally said at a person’s funeral. After the service she enjoyed being chauffeured to the Town Hall in the mayoral limo where her gift to the council was a pair of gloves, symbolising a historic Wells industry, and sealing wax which traditionally helped civic officials gain exemption from taxes.

The honour bestows upon the holder the privilege of being allowed to drive sheep up the High Street, so Nancy put on a smock, wellies and straw hat for the televised event and a local farmer arrived with some sheep and a dog called Rebel. However, the sheep went into Woolworth’s instead of their pen in the market place, then up Sadler Street and onto Cathedral Green where a traffic policeman manged to stop them and herd them back to Rugantino’s, where cameras filmed them in front of a board advertising roast lamb with mint sauce.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 1, at 7.30pm at Wells & Mendip Museum when our speaker will be showing us how to make greetings cards, and we will bring and buy cakes to raise money for Macmillan.

To support this worthwhile charity a fundraising brunch was held on Sunday, September 15, at the home of our International Committee chairperson, Sue Leworthy. Fine weather prevailed and around 60 Inner Wheel, Rotary Club and other guests attended making this a very successful and enjoyable event, raising around £1,000 for the charity in the process.

Liz Hamblin WELLS TWINNING ASSOCIATION FOUR members of Wells Twinning Association accepted the kind invitation to the 603rd Wurstmarkt that is held in Bad Durkheim, Wells’ twin city in Germany.

The opening ceremony started on Friday, September 6, at 5pm with the City Band of Bad Durkheim giving the traditional concert in front of the St Lugwig Church. As representatives of the mayor and Wells Twinning Association, we were then invited to join the parade to the opening ceremony in front of the Gradiebau (Salt Works), which tells the story of the very first Wurstmarkt. After a walk around the fair we all attended an evening meal.

Next day, the representatives from the twin cities were entertained with a tour of a winery and sparkling wine cellar of Fitz-Ritter that was 200 years old and still in the same family. This winery is the oldest sparkling wine cellar in the Palatinate region.

Said Emily Pankhurst: “If the general public were pleased with what we are doing that would be proof that our warfare is ineffective. We don’t intend that you should be pleased.” It was clear that the Suffragettes chose their targets with care, but it wasn’t until 1928 that they gained full equal voting rights with men.

Nowadays, orchids and exotic garden plants are no longer the preserve of the wealthy and powerful upper classes.

And Kew Gardens, like most other botanical gardens, are and have been for a long time easily accessible to the general population. Furthermore, the fascination for the exotic in

gardening continues and to satisfy this tendency, Wells Gardening Club has invited Rosemary Legrand on a return visit to give an illustrated talk on the Botanical Gardens of Singapore.

Rosemary’s background is eminently horticultural. Her father, George Hyde, bred azaleas and rhododendrons for Kew and Exbury. She herself has travelled widely and accumulated a wealth of knowledge as well as being an accomplished photographer.

Her talk is entitled The Tale of Two Gardens in Singapore – The Botanical & Orchid Garden and Gardens by the Bay. It will take place in Wells Town Hall on Thursday, October 10, at 7.30pm.

Work gets under way on city’s new £2m enterprise centre

WORK has started on the new enterprise centre at Cathedral Park, Wells.

It will offer two larger offices, ten smaller offices and two meeting rooms as well as five 50 square metre industrial units.

Work is also now underway on an enterprise centre in Wiveliscombe. Units have been craned onto the old Karro Food Group site at Sandys Moor and will form part of the new, purpose-built centre which will offer ten offices, two meeting rooms and seven industrial units.

The aim is for both centres – which are each costing in the region of £2 million – to be open next spring, bringing the total number of centres in the Somerset network up to seven.

Enterprise centres provide modern, accessible space for small and growing businesses – something that can be hard to find in rural areas.

They offer flexible tenancies, superfast broadband, business networking, access to business support and competitive rents.

Both projects are being built by the Kier construction group, jointly funded by Somerset County Council, the European Regional Development Fund and the Government’s Local Growth Fund through the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership and Somerset.

Encouragement to recycle books THE Bookbarn at Hallatrow, near Wells, has launched its latest campaign aimed at highlighting the importance of the ‘Three Rs’ – Re-use, Read and Recycle – in a bid to help safeguard the environment.

CEO Nick Bates said: “We want to encourage people to recycle unwanted books with us instead of chucking them away.

Not one of the 750,000 books in our warehouse will ever go to landfill.”

Please back campaign for better social care funding WE’RE writing to ask your readers to put their names to the county council’s Stand Up For Care online petition (www.somerset.gov.uk/ standupforcare).

Three months ago, two BBC Panorama documentaries brought social care and the pressures it faces into the nation’s living rooms. People were moved, inspired and angered; and the subject rightly became part of the national political debate. Since then, Westminster has been on its summer recess and Brexit continues to dominate the minds of many. There’s a real danger that reform of social care funding – arguably the biggest and most important challenge facing this country – gets overlooked. That’s why we have launched this online petition and why we are urging people to sign it.

It is on the Government’s Petition Parliament website and calls for cross-party parliamentary discussions before Christmas about how to end the social care funding shortfall. This is a national issue of the utmost importance and a challenge that can only realistically be risen to if parties work together. This petition has the backing of the group leaders of all the county council’s political groups.

Councils up and down the country are struggling to provide the care and support people deserve because funding just hasn’t kept pace with the growing demands of an ageing population – more people living longer, often with conditions needing support from social care as well as health.

care funding gap will be around £3.5 billion. The County Council Network estimates by 2024/25 councils will need to spend an extra £6.1 billion every year on social care, compared to 2015/16.

Somerset’s demography, plus the challenges that come with a rural county, make this an issue we are grappling with before many others. In 20 years 32 per cent of our population will be aged 65 or over, compared with 24 per cent nationally. Social care is already where 38 per cent of our net budget is spent – £126 million a year.

One day, many of us will rely on social care and if not us, then our friends, family and loved ones. We must do everything we can to keep this most important of issues at the very forefront of minds in Westminster.

As a council we’re working

differently. Working closely with health and increasingly with communities to help people live independently in their own homes for as long as possible.

But secure, appropriate longterm funding is needed; and this is a nettle that successive governments have been unable to grasp. That cannot continue.

We have to keep this at the top of the Westminster to do list. So, please help us Stand Up For Care by signing the petition.

Belrose in good shape FOOTBALL

Hundreds of visitors took the opportunity to visit the Rare Plant Fair at The Bishop’s Palace on a sunny Sunday in September. Rare and unusual plants from nurseries from across the South West were for sale, ranging from perennials, shrubs and trees to alpines, bulbs and exotic plants, with nursery owners on hand to offer advice on selecting and growing the right plants for particular gardens.

A NEW season has brought renewed optimism for local side Belrose after a decent year last time out. The team earned promotion up to Mid-Somerset Division One following an impressive second-place finish in 2018/19. Despite two excellent cup runs they were ultimately unsuccessful so ended up collecting three runners-up medals in all. With the majority of players staying plus some new additions in tow, the Bel will be hoping to have another consistent campaign.

There were three varying but equally competitive tests in preseason against Evercreech, Pilton and Strode ensuing contrasting

results yet plenty of signs of optimism ahead of the big opener against fellow promoted side Wessex at The Blue. With both sides knowing each other like the back of their hand, a tight, feisty encounter was always on the cards. Belrose took the lead when a Charlie Moon cutback was deftly tucked away by Max Culpin, giving the hosts a deserved buffer going into half time. After the break Wessex improved and a clinical finish punished some slack defending.

However, an eventful second period was decided by a deflected effort from player-manager Dan Barker for the hosts, a thoroughly satisfying victory and ideal start for the men in red.

Fun way to end tournament play CROQUET

A ‘bake-off’ between Mendip District Council staff and councillors was won by economic development officer Kelly Knight, pictured third from right, with an elderflower, blueberry and lemon cake. The challenge was part of a fundraising tea party hosted by council chair Councillor Helen SprawsonWhite in honour of CLIC Sargent. The donated cakes were then sold to guests to raise money for the charity, and there was also a raffle. Overall, the tea party raised more than £250. Kelly won a certificate, a cake whisk and other baking equipment which had been donated.

AS the croquet season draws to a close for the year, members of the Palace Croquet Club, who play the game on the lawns at The Bishop’s Palace, enjoyed a lovely sunny day for the final croquet tournament of the year.

Nineteen members entered the fun tournament in which they played golf croquet, scoring as many hoops they could in the time limit. Each round was played with a different partner with the emphasise for the day being a social event. Scores were kept for each individual and were surprisingly close, with just one point separating the first and second place.

Members of The Beetle Crushers Clog and Step Dance Group enjoyed a full day of dance in splendid weather performing at the Swanage Folk Festival in early September. They performed their extended repertoire of traditional dances again at the Priston Festival, and can be seen even closer to home when they appear at Wells Food Festival on October 13.

Season starts with two tight matches RUGBY THE new rugby season is now underway, the Wells First team having played two matches: a narrow loss at Nailsea & Backwell, followed by an even narrower win at home to Bristol side Imperial, this by just a single point. The score was 30 points to 29, Aaron Cook kicking the winning penalty in the closing minute.

The Second team have also started their season, but suffered a heavy loss at Bridgwater-based Old Morganians.

Off the field, the club held a Mouse Racing event to raise funds to build a raised pond for Geoff Cook. Geoff was a former player who was seriously injured some 30 years ago and is now confined to a wheelchair. He still

loves his rugby and often comes to watch his sons play.

His other love is his garden and a raised pond will enhance his enjoyment. The cost was given as £750, but with the club raising nearly £1,000 and the money given to his Just Giving page, the figure raised is more than double. Hopefully enough for pond, equipment and maybe some fish.

Before the first home match against Imperial the club hosted the first lunch of the season sponsored by Mike Phelps. It was well supported as always with nearly 100 members and guests sitting down to a meal of fish, chips and mushy peas, followed by cheese and biscuits.

Many thanks are due to chef, Clive Arthur for his excellent preparation of the meal.

Relay benefits two good causes RUNNING THE Mendip Hills Hash House Harriers ran the 13th West Mendip Way Relay on Saturday, September 14, starting at Uphill Beach and finishing at Cathedral Green, Wells.

n SPORT City’s A team in rampant form FOOTBALL WELLS City A got their season off to the best possible start on August 31 with the total demolition of Clutton Reserves.

A competitive first 20 minutes saw Wells twice take the lead with goals from Harry Davidson and Ryan Pledger but a Clutton spot-kick made it 2-2. This was to be as competitive as the match got as Wells responded almost immediately with another goal from Davidson. The game was then put beyond doubt in spectacular fashion with eventual man of the match Stefan Wasmuht scoring a five-minute hat trick to send Wells into the break with a 6-2 lead.

The goals kept coming, firstly from defender Ben Warren followed by a brace from substitute Tom Pledger, before Wasmuht add to his hat-trick with two more well taken goals for an 11-2 final score.

Wells City A continued their fantastic start with a 5-1 win against Chilcompton Reserves.

Chilcompton took the lead, slotting home the rebound after Wells keeper Aaron Phipps did well to get down and save a fierce shot. Wells responded immediately, a fantastic cross from Stefan Wasmuht on the right wing finding the head of Ryan Pledger who outjumped everyone to equalise.

With Tyler Cornish and his midfield partner Toby Clark dominating midfield in the second half, Wells took the game away from Chilcompton, with two goals from Wasmuht, another from Pledger and a late strike from Jake Cornish.

Wells City A continued their 100 per cent record after being drawn away to Alcombe Rovers in round one of the Somerset Junior Cup. The breakthrough came in the second half when Wells won a penalty after handball in the Alcombe box, and up stepped captain Dan Catley to slot home.

Alcombe then won a penalty of their own after a tug back in the box, but keeper Harrison Veale pulled off a magical save, and Stefan Wasmuht doubled the visitors’ lead with a vicious shot in the 63rd minute.

Mixed fortunes for 1st team FOOTBALL IN the past month, Wells 1st team recorded good wins in the league against Radstock and Warminster Town, before slipping to a 2-0 defeat against Wincanton Town.

It was Wells who struck first in the game at Radstock when Mark Randall put a perfect cross to the back post for Charlie Crook to head home on 28 minutes. Wells doubled their lead 11 minutes later when another pinpoint cross from Randall found Crook who swivelled and volleyed the ball into the bottom corner.

Radstock pulled a goal back almost immediately from a tap in at the far post after a corner, but some brilliant last-ditch defending in the second half saw Wells keep Radstock at bay to record a fine 2-1 win.

“I can’t see many teams coming away with three points there so a great result for Wells,” said Wells’ joint manager Nathan Truckle.

It was a similar story against Warminster Town. Wells took the lead after ten minutes when a sumptuous cross from Harvey Hadrill was met at the near post

by Ross Padfield and he glanced a header home.

Wells continued to dominate but spurned some glorious chances, and they paid the penalty midway through the second half when a Warminster midfielder arrived unmarked to divert the ball into the net.

Padfield restored the lead when he prodded the ball in from six yards out, but ten minutes later a fizzed cross into the Wells box was finished with a tidy header by the Warminster striker to level things again.

Wells showed their character and deservedly got the winning goal in the 88th minute when an unbelievable ball into the box from Randall was met by man of the match Padfield, and his looping header found its way into the top corner.

Wells were beaten by Wincanton despite dominating for much of the game. Chances came and went before Wincanton took the lead six minutes before the break when a corner was only half-cleared and the ball was eventually poked home from three yards.

Wells worked hard to get back into the game but fell further behind on 71 minutes when a 25-yard free kick was beautifully steered into the top corner by the Wincanton captain. Two minutes later, Ben Amghar was shown

a straight red card after lashing out.

In the FA Vase, Wells were knocked out of the competition

by Newton Abbott Spurs having beaten Millbrook two weeks earlier. In the game against Millbrook, Wells fell behind in the 15th minute after some slack defending. Harry Foster pulled Wells level four minutes later when he brilliantly lobbed the keeper, but Millbrook quickly re-took the lead when the striker broke through and beat Hodges with a calm finish. Wells levelled again just before half-time when a quality Tom Hill corner was powerfully met by Ross Padfield, and with neither team on target in the second half, the game went into extra time. A goal from Foster was cancelled out by one from Millbrook, but further goals followed from Padfield and Foster.

Wells suffered a disappointing defeat to Newton Abbot Spurs in the next round on September 14. Newton Abbot scored at the end of the first half, and added a second after the break.

Foster pulled a goal back in the 90th minute, and the five minutes of added time saw a barrage of Wells attacks, but Newton dug deep to progress in the competition.
