Wells set for poignant Remembrance events POPPY petals cascading from high above the nave of Wells Cathedral will be one of the ways in which the city will mark Remembrance Day this year.

The petals will be identical to those used in this year’s Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

People will be able to write messages on the petals before they are released during the Cathedral’s Remembrance Requiem service on November 11.

“I’m hoping it will be a very poignant moment at the end of the big day, people standing in silence watching these petals fall from the ceiling of the Cathedral.

It will be magical,” said Derek Cooper, a Wells Royal British Legion committee member and the Wells Poppy Appeal organiser.

Fudge-making to be daily public event A NEW shop in Wells Market Place will treat passers-by to the daily sight and smell of fudge being handmade in the shop window.

Roly’s Fudge Pantry, which is opening in the former Present Company store on Friday, November 9, is going to bring to life the traditional art of fudgemaking on the premises.

Owners Sarah Orton and Steven Jones hope it will be an enjoyable spectacle for residents and tourists alike – and they can’t wait to open in Wells.

“We first came to Wells four years ago in search of the perfect retail site, but nothing was available, despite visiting several times and over a number of months,” said Sarah.

“In the end we opened a pantry by the cathedral arch in Salisbury, and now after a further three-year wait we are pleased that this beautiful medieval shop has become available so close to another delightful and imposing cathedral and the lovely retail area around Market Place.”

Fudge hearts will be on sale in the new shop inscribed with the word ‘Wells’ as a souvenir for visitors. And with Christmas just around the corner, the pair are cooking up a selection of festive flavours alongside their best selling Vanilla Clotted Cream and Salted Maple & Pecan, with Christmas Pudding,

They are also busy creating individual Christmas puddings and fudge stars for the Christmas tree, and hampers.

“We’re really excited to get involved in the local community and the amazing calendar of events here in Wells, whilst it’s a pleasure to be able to employ people from the local community,” said Steven.

THE local beat team and a drugs sniffer dog greeted pupils arriving at Wells Blue School on October 19.

No drugs were discovered, but police say that they may be back in the future.

“The event was organised in collaboration with the school, based on information and intelligence we had received,” said a police spokesman.

“There had been arrests previously but on this occasion nothing was found.

“However it does send out a strong message that we will continue to combat illegal drugs activity in our communities.

“We may carry out similar operations in the future.”

A blue plaque has been unveiled to commemorate the Wells Gallows.

The eighth in a series of plaques being installed across the city by Wells Civic Society, it is attached to a plinth at Keward, near “the place of public execution for hanging, drawing, quartering and burning at the stake” in the 17th and 18th centuries. Philip Welch of the civic society thanked those who had helped with the project including James and Mark Vear for providing the stone and building the plinth and Wells RFC for contributing funds, before the Rev Clare Cowling, one of the clergy at St Cuthbert’s Church, led prayers for those who had died, and Mayor of Wells Councillor Celia Wride unveiled the plaque.

Arrests as fraudsters seek to trick elderly SCAMMERS have been targeting elderly and vulnerable people in the Wells area.

Two men were arrested after a man in a van drove an 82-yearold woman to a bank in Wells so that she could pay cash up front for work on her roof.

Police were called by staff at NatWest in High Street who were concerned about the customer.

Officers attended the bank and the lady’s home and arrested two men aged 24 and 46 on suspicion of fraud by false representation. Both were later released on police bail pending further enquiries, with conditions not to enter Wells.

No work was completed and no money changed hands.

Another woman was not so lucky and was scammed out of £4,000 by a telephone caller claiming to be from HMRC demanding money for an outstanding tax bill.

The woman is a client of Wells accountants Probusiness, who say that several of their clients have contacted them for advice after receiving similar calls.

The caller says that if the bill is not paid instantly, it will result in an arrest warrant being

triggered and the police arriving at the person’s door to take them away in handcuffs. The caller adds that if they hang up before the end of the call, the arrest warrant will instantly be triggered anyway.

“Just this morning, a client in his 80s telephoned the office in a complete panic,” said Probusiness director Jane Bowe.

“He had received just such a call, but he thought to telephone us because he knew we had records of all his tax affairs and would be able to act on his behalf and to give him sound advice.

“Another client was not so fortunate. She lives alone and was scammed of £4,000 on the first call. She thankfully rang us when they called her back to demand a further £5,000.”

Jane said that people should not give their bank details to anyone asking for money over the phone, and if they have an accountant, to check with them first.

“HMRC never demand money with menaces,” she said. “They don’t – and couldn’t legally – send the police to your home.” u On the Beat, page 30

Derek given award for service to Wells A SPECIAL award has been given to Derek Cooper for his service to the local community.

Derek was one of 36 people to receive Somerset County Council community awards after being nominated for all he has done for Wells by Mayor Celia Wride.

The Wells Poppy Appeal organiser and a Wells Royal British Legion committee member for many years, Derek also volunteers with Wells Arthritis Care, helps promote Wells through the city tourism forum, and set up Wells Film Centre in 1992 with his wife June, which his family still run.

“I was very humbled to receive it and to think our mayor thought me worthy of it, especially when you heard some of the other awards in the room,” said Derek.

“The clue is in the title community because without the

The annual awards celebrate some of Somerset’s most respected community figures.

More than 120 people were at this year’s ceremony at Taunton Rugby Club, where awardwinners were presented with a certificate by county council chairman Councillor Nigel Taylor. They also received a community service award badge and a county council tie.

Councillor Wride read out her citation for Derek at the ceremony. She said: “This nomination is in recognition of Derek’s outstanding service to the City of Wells, in growing a successful local business over 30 years, which is still thriving today.

“Derek has worked as a Community Support Officer with the Wells Chamber of Commerce and is still involved with the Wells City Tourism Forum.

“His tireless commitment to his voluntary work for the Wells Branch of the Royal British Legion and Wells Arthritis Care over the last several years until the present day, needs to be recognised. It is said that there is not an event in the city that Derek cannot be seen helping, or indeed has not organised himself, all out of the kindness of his heart and in his own time.

“Derek, you are a worthy recipient of the Chair of Somerset County Council’s Community Service Award.”

Others who received awards included Chris Jewel, Connor Roe, Josh Bratchley and John Volanthen, who were given bravery awards for helping rescue youth footballers trapped in caves in Thailand; and Peter Leighton Bright for his contribution to village life in Westbury-sub-Mendip.

RESIDENTS have been told that there is no need to be alarmed by the sight of people in protective clothing and breathing masks at Bishops Green in Wells.

A concerned passer-by sent a photograph to Wells Voice of two men in white overalls and masks at the housing development on Wookey Hole Road.

Radioactive components were found at the former Thales site last year but housebuilder David Wilson Homes and Mendip District Council say that there is no new health risk.

David Wilson Homes technical director Martin Payne said: “As part of the ongoing materials management plan and remediation strategy agreed with Mendip District Council, all materials that need to leave site are checked for potential contamination.

“If any contamination was to be found this would be dealt with in line with the remediation strategy.

“We have kept residents fully informed about all activities and we can confirm these pose no risk to any of our customers or employees.”

Appeal for more people to become school governors MORE than half of all the church schools in Somerset (98 of 182 schools) are seeking people to serve as governors to work as part of the team responsible for the running of the schools.

To address this and attract more people to the role, the Church of England Diocese of Bath and Wells has launched #beagovernor. In the campaign, school governors tell the story of why they became a governor and what they get out of the role;

Kayleigh Methven challenging perceptions of what being a governor is all about.

Young professional, Kayleigh Methven, aged 29, who is a governor at St Cuthbert’s CofE Junior School in Wells and St Benedict’s CofE Junior School in Glastonbury, is one of the faces of the campaign. Kayleigh said:

“Being a governor has been a great way to get experience and develop my skills. Through the role I’ve also become more a part of my local community. I’ve made connections I wouldn’t have otherwise.”

Suzanne McDonald, assistant director in the education team at the Diocese of Bath and Wells, said: “We want to ensure all of our schools have the right number of governors with a full complement of skills and expertise. We’re looking for people from all walks of life to bring their different skills to the role and develop more along the way.

“You don’t need to have a connection with children attending the school, you don’t need to go to church. You do need to be sympathetic to the Christian values held by the school, which the diocese can support through training. You could be a job-seeker, young professional or retired business person. What we are looking for is a passion for helping our children and communities thrive.

It’s a hugely fulfilling role.”

Owners celebrate ‘Oscar’ award as guide names B&B UK’s best A WELLS B&B has won an ‘Oscar’ of the hotel industry.

Stoberry House and Garden received a César award after being named B&B of the year by The Good Hotel Guide 2019.

The 18th-century coach house, owned by Tim and Frances Meeres Young, is set in 26 acres of parkland at Stoberry Park overlooking Wells Cathedral and Glastonbury Tor. Tim said: “The Oscar of the hotel industry is how the César awards are described and Stoberry House and Garden is a very proud recipient of the César award for best B&B of the year.

“The award is for all of us working at Stoberry, every member of the team adds to the success of our B&B. “We have had a wonderful few years, named as the best B&B in the Mendips and one of the top ten places to stay at

this summer by the Sunday Telegraph has made for a year of celebrations.”

Named after César Ritz, ten César awards are presented annually by The Good Hotel Guide to UK hotels which are judged to have demonstrated excellence in their field.

death of her life-partner Brynn whilst she was nesting earlier this year. The pair had lived at the Palace since 2013. Wynn battled on and hatched five cygnets in May, one of which had already flown the nest.

The Palace is working alongside swan charities and sanctuaries to find a suitable new pair of breeding swans.

Agreement for rise in cemetery fees COUNCILLORS have agreed to an increase in cemetery fees after hearing that people from outside the area are being buried in Wells because the rates are cheaper than elsewhere.

Wells City Council’s open spaces officer Steve Luck told the City Centre and Open Spaces committee meeting on October 4 that it was important to keep up with costs at other local cemeteries.

He said: “We have to make sure we have burial space for Wells and St Cuthbert Out residents. We are cheaper than Glastonbury and even Bristol residents coming here paying double fees.”

A rise in the fees was agreed.

A double plot, for example, will go up from £600 to £650.

Councillors also agreed to obtain some quotes for digitising the cemetery records.

The cemetery was opened in 1854, and there are full records in large ledgers for all 15,000 people buried there.

They get used every day, said Mr Luck, and putting the records on a computer database would

help preserve the old ledgers and enable people to carry out searches online.

“It’s going to be very, very expensive but once it’s done it’s done forever,” he said.

“I would suggest that there are not many cemeteries in the country that have got every single record,” he added. n Mr Luck told the committee that this year’s Wells festive lights displays will include mini solar-powered Christmas trees attached to the hanging basket stands in High Street.

They will light up at about 6pm and glow for five or six hours each night.

The reindeer lights display will be back, he said, as well as the cross street display and the wreaths on the Town Hall, but some “fun characters” may be added this year as well.

The lights will start to be put up on November 19. n Councillors decided to buy and trial a new metal groundbased dog bin costing £332.20 that cannot be damaged as easily as the existing mounted plastic ones.

Lively food festival brightens dull day DESPITE a wet and windy start to the day, nothing was going to dampen the spirit of Wells Food Festival and visitors turned up in their thousands to enjoy the sixth annual event.

“We were probably down slightly on last year’s figures when the weather was unseasonably warm and people visited in their droves,” Charlotte Steele, a festival director, before a final estimate was made.

“But considering the rain downfall in the morning, we were absolutely delighted by the numbers. We’d like to thank everyone who wrapped up and braved the weather.”

Visitors had come from far and wide to enjoy the region’s finest food and drink producers. As well as some familiar favourites, there were an impressive number of firsttimers taking part, including some new companies. This was demonstrated by The Smoke Folk from Frome who not only won The Cognique Award for Best Start-Up Business, but also The Old Mill Best in Show Award.

Wayne Bastian, from Old Mill, who was on the judging panel, said: “It was a real joy to visit their stall. It is a new social enterprise and is run by two passionate and enthusiastic individuals. We were so impressed by the range of products, from cheese and garlic to fish and salt, along with their sustainable sourcing and attention to detail in the smoking process. To top it all, it was a

In the Town Hall, the food photography workshops were well attended and an interesting group of speakers gathered for an informal talk entitled It’s Time We Talked About Local Food. In the Recreation Ground, a constant stream of people visited the Discovery Zone and met some rare Somerset breeds of farm animals in the Bath & West’s Farmyard. The Sauerkrautathon marquee was buzzing throughout the day, where 430kg of vegetables were

chopped by an army of volunteers for the sauerkraut Guinness World Book of Records attempt, with an impressive line-up of speakers extolling the virtues and importance of fermented foods and gut health.

“The day was a complete success,” said festival director, Jon Abbott.

“It was a real celebration of our local food and drink industry.

We couldn’t have asked for more, from the number of talented producers taking stands, the crowds of visitors who came along regardless of the weather, the ever-growing list of sponsors whose generosity is integral to the festival’s continuation and finally the unbelievably dedicated team of volunteers who work throughout the year to actually bring this festival to fruition.

Once again, the ‘sold out’ signs on the stands by 4.30pm says it all.”

Conference maps out way forward for tackling some of city’s challenges A DAY-LONG conference in the Town Hall to discuss the future of Wells has produced a list of action points to improve life in the city and drive its development forward.

Nearly 100 people from businesses, councils, schools, organisations and venues across the city took part in the Wake Up Wells Stakeholder Conference on October 7.

They listened to speakers including Dean of Wells the Very Rev Dr John Davies, and joint managing director of the Iceland food chain Richard Walker, and discussed topics in group sessions that ranged from infrastructure and young people to entertainment and sport.

“I wanted to start a conversation and that is what is happening in this room today, an exciting collaborative project.

We in this room are the changemakers,” said Kirstie Harris – one of the co-leaders of Wake Up Wells along with Emma Lefevre – in her introduction to delegates.

Ann Whalley discussed the findings of the Wake Up Wells questionnaire, which more than 600 people completed.

She said that there was “an

incredible amount of positive feedback”, with people praising the heritage of Wells, the architecture, the food and drink, the culture and the real sense of community.

High rent and rates, parking and public transport were among issues regarded as problematic, while younger people expressed a desire for more variety and excitement.

Naomi Griffith, one of the directors of Onion Collective, a regeneration company based in Watchet, described what is being done there to improve an area with the lowest social mobility in the country, and the obstacles they have had to overcome.

“We’re part of making Watchet great again but we’ve learnt that we need to work in partnership with people,” she said.

“It’s about constantly asking and constantly listening,” she added.

The Dean of Wells said that Wells Cathedral is keen to work with others for the benefit of the community. He said that it was already moving towards a partnership with The Bishop’s Palace and Wells & Mendip Museum to draw more people

“The Cathedral has all sorts of things to offer and we are very keen to work in partnership with you all,” he said.

Richard Walker said that Iceland had grown from one store in Oswestry in the 1970s, where his mother came up with the Iceland name while working on the checkout, to more than 950 stores today – though he ruled out opening a store in Wells because the city is too small and does not fit in with the company’s usual demographic.

He said that the company had a strong track record in challenging expectations and effecting positive change, and had led the way in going GM free, in taking CFCs out of refrigeration and in removing plastic packaging.

His lessons for Wake Up Wells were that problems can only be solved by working together, and that innovation and doing things differently were

necessary to break up the status quo.

Outcomes of the break-out sessions included investigating whether business car parks can be shared to ease parking problems; engaging with young people about the issue of drugs; initiating a hub to connect organisations with each other and with potential volunteers; improving the marketing of Wells to a wider audience (“Wells is a world heritage site without the status. We need to shout about that,” said Jonathan Sawyer of The Bishop’s Palace); and looking at whether the market can be enlarged or whether there can be pop-up markets on different days.

“I think today has been utterly amazing,” said Emma Lefevre in summing up.

“We have just scratched the surface of some very big issues and it’s clear that we need more discussion going forward.”

The next Wake Up Wells event is a community day that will take place in the Cathedral on January 26, 2019.

Music lover leaves £80k for choristers A RETIRED Bath University chemistry lecturer has left a legacy of £80,000 to Wells Cathedral Chorister Trust to help fund musical training for more local children.

Janet Jones, who died aged 84 in June last year, lived in Saltford on the edge of the Bath and Wells diocese near Bristol, but often came to Wells to attend the daily choral evensong which is broadcast regularly on BBC Radio Three.

Miss Jones, who had no children of her own, was anxious that others should benefit from her legacy.

“She just loved music,” said her friend and neighbour Ruth Pryce, who is a retired primary school teacher. “She was very knowledgeable about church music. She loved the organ

The chorister trust is currently fundraising to create a £10 million fund to provide enough permanent income to pay for choral training for all 36 boys and girls in the cathedral choir “Every year dozens of talented local seven- to 10-year-olds audition for the choir. They don’t have to have any previous musical training, just that spark of musical ability,” said Mrs Kingston.

The selected children are then educated at Wells Cathedral School, one of only four government supported specialist music schools in Britain.

Specialist musicians at the school receive scholarship support from a variety of sources, but the chorister trust endowment fund currently stand at £1.2 million.

“We try to provide financial support for as many choristers as we can, but we want to be able to provide free places for all of them,” said Mrs Kingston.

Discussion of crime writing AUTHOR Beth Webb is to give a talk at Wells Library about how she wrote her latest young adult crime novel.

Avon and Somerset crime scene investigator Andy Manns will talk also about how to incorporate real forensics into writing.

Final preparations for big night out PREPARATIONS are in full swing for this year’s Wells Carnival.

Committee members have been finalising arrangements for the big night, and the clubs are putting the finishing touches to their carts.

“It’s going to be a good show,” said carnival president Maurice Day. “Once again a very small committee have been working hard in the background to facilitate a lovely carnival night.

“We’ve had a good year weather-wise and we hope it will be good again on carnival night.”

Wells City Band will lead the parade, which takes place on Friday, November 16.

Starting from the Sherston Inn roundabout at 7pm, the circuit takes in Strawberry Way, Tucker Street, Chamberlain Street, Sadler Street, High Street, Broad Street and Priory Road, finishing back at the Sherston Inn roundabout.

The cart is based on the Titanic’s engine room.

The Titanic was one of three Olympic Class liners commissioned by the White Star Line to be built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast.

Construction began on the Titanic on March 31, 1909. These magnificent vessels were the industrial marvels of their age and Titanic was to be the biggest, fastest and most luxurious liner yet.

Gorgons are going to take you back to the time below deck before the tragedy happened and have a look and honour the real pride of the White Star Line.

The Gorgons club is based at the Britannia Inn, Bath Road, Wells, but builds in Glastonbury.

We would like to thank Rob, Karen and all of the staff of the Britannia Inn for all of their support throughout the year.

Gorgons run a monthly quiz at the Britannia Inn. This is held on the third Sunday of every month and starts at 7.30pm.

As the years passed, the number of Unigate employees diminished and the club was asked to leave their site behind the factory. In 1975 the club found a new home at the Globe Inn and became The Globe.

The size of the club and its entries grew over time, and in 1980 the club’s cart Guardians of Shangri-La caught the eye of the organisers of the London Easter Parade. The Globe were invited to the capital to take part in the famous parade; this was not to

RJCC RJCC started life as Crazycrew Carnival Club, founded back in 1997 when some members started off on the carnival way of life after being with a club from Clutton.

The club was based in Bristol, but the number of members dwindled until in 2014 it was relaunched as RJcc by James Webber and Rachel Baker, though still taking part in carnivals from Bristol.

They decided to become more of a Somerset club and wanted more people to take part, so relocated this year with the help of new friends from Wells. They joined up with James Petvin and Mandy Dyer and their families and are now based at The Globe Inn. They have been hard at work fundraising and have found a place in Glastonbury to build for this year’s entry, with other help from CISPP member Mike Webber and Martin Dyer plus Mike Daniells and Ryan Pepe who is helping to get it up and on the road.

The club hope to have the entry ready by the start of the Bridgwater carnival circuit on November 3 – a small walking group with a big heart. n Thanks to Wells Carnival Ltd for their help in compiling these reports.

2018 marks the Globe Carnival Club’s 50th year on the Guy Fawkes carnival circuit. The club origin dates back to 1968 when the Unigate Carnival Club was formed by employees at the Unigate factory in Wells. Their first entry was entitled Valhalla (Hall of Dead Heroes), a small affair compared to today’s entries, powered by a 4kVA

1984 was something of a stand out year for the club with the entry Stand and Deliver taking top place in results across the circuit and finishing the year as runners up to the County Cup. There was further success in 2001 with the entry Automaton based on a musical clockwork organ. After picking up a handful of trophies on the road, the club was contacted and asked if they could keep the cart together for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. The following year the club took the cart fully illuminated to Wells market square and represented the Somerset Carnivals in front of the Queen and Prince Phillip during her tour of Britain.

Goldies wins education award

Classes to help prevent falls

THE Golden-Oldies charity has won the Education Category of the 2018 National Lottery Awards.

The charity was started by Bath’s Music Man Grenville Jones 11 years ago with just four sessions in sheltered housing community rooms.

Goldies, as it is fondly known, now has more than 160 sessions led by 60 dedicated freelance session leaders, including monthly sessions in Wells.

The work of the charity has featured on radio and television across the world since its launch, most recently when BBC1 screened the awards announcement.

This award was for the schools intergenerational project based on the final months of the First World War, leading up to Armistice Sunday on November 11.

AGE UK Somerset is to start a new class – Stay Strong Stay Steady – for older people in Wells who are worried that they sometimes feel unsteady on their feet, or perhaps have a family history of osteoporosis or Parkinson’s.

The sessions, provided by Age UK Somerset and Somerset County Council, are designed specifically to improve strength, balance and confidence and therefore help prevent damaging falls.

Running each week for an hour, the classes will cost £4 per session.

Restaurant perfect stopping off point for hungry drivers THE people involved in putting a new car through its paces made a series of refuelling stops in Wells – to fill up with pasta and pizza at Rugantinos restaurant.

The eatery at The Ancient Gatehouse, owned by Nick Rossi, provided lunch for national and regional journalists test-driving the updated Fiat 500X, along with the Fiat project team.

For three days in a row, a number of drivers set off from Bristol and made their way to Wells where they had a two-hour meal-break at Rugantinos before heading back to Bristol.

Rugantinos chefs Peter Grafton and Sami Hanchi created dishes to order for the lunch guests – and even designed a table centre-piece pizza topped with the word ‘Fiat’, which earned an appearance in The Sun’s motoring section.

“We can’t have a Fiat launch without going to an Italian restaurant. This has a great heritage and does genuine Italian food. It’s the perfect Italian restaurant for an Italian car brand,” said Fiat PR director Kate Saxton.

Nick said: “We were honoured that Fiat decided to use Rugantinos as the venue for their launch. It was a pleasure and a lot of fun catering for the Fiat team and their guests. There were journalists from What Car?, Auto Express and Auto Trader to name just a few. The feedback we had from the MD and the head

WELLS Cathedral School has been asked to contribute to the inquiry set up to examine the failure of some organisations to protect children from sexual abuse.

In its investigation into residential schools, the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) “will explore how schools and other agencies respond to allegations of sexual abuse by school staff, and address broad questions of school culture, governance, leadership, training and recruitment”.

In a statement, Wells Cathedral School said: “IICSA is undertaking scrutiny of past and current safeguarding practices in a large variety of institutions which care for children.

Residential schools are being examined next by the inquiry, and Wells Cathedral School has been requested by IICSA to contribute to their specific investigation into residential music schools, alongside all the Specialist Music Schools in England, and a number of other residential schools of differing types.

“At this moment in time we are not aware of what precisely the inquiry intends to ask of us, but since safeguarding children in our care is our highest priority, we welcome this opportunity to engage with the inquiry and we are fully committed to continue to support its work, and to working with IICSA in an open and transparent manner throughout the duration of this process.”

Reindeer Parade set to pack streets again THE Wells Rotary Reindeer Parade that is watched each year by thousands of people will return for a 12th time on Sunday, December 9.

Before and after the parade there will be music by bands and choirs plus rides and other entertainments in Wells Market Place.

There will also be a variety of stalls with festive food, drink, seasonal goods and gifts.

Last year’s parade raised £2,500 through programme sales, donations from the public and support from the local business community. This money was passed on to support the vital work of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Programmes will again be available for £1 which will include a draw ticket.

BUBBLY pom pom dancer Tina Blackwill is organising a Wells Festive Windows competition to add a bit of razzle dazzle to this year’s Christmas celebrations.

Craft markets and Christmas festivities THE Bishop’s Palace will once again be celebrating the Christmas season in style.

Following the successes of 2016 and 2017, the Christmas Artisan Markets will return from November 9-11.

There will be more than 30 stalls of local and handmade crafts and products offering a range of unique Christmas gifts, from jewellery to stained glass, and lampshades to skincare products, all locally made in the heart of the West Country.

There will also be seasonal food and drink, and music in the Chapel.

Returning in December will be Christmas at the Palace, a fortnight of festivities from December 8-22.

The interior of the Palace will be illuminated, and a Family Trail will take visitors on a path through the Palace & Gardens, leading to traditional nativity scene at the end.

Each weekend (December 8 and 9, 17 and 18, and 22), Father Christmas will take up residence in the Long Gallery, along with his wife Mother Christmas. Last year all the slots sold out, so booking is advisable. Tickets cost £5 per child, which includes entrance to Palace & Gardens. All children must be accompanied by a paying adult or member.

In addition, there will be Christmas carols in the Chapel from a range of different local musicians, and Wells Theatre Company will return with A Christmas Carol with more actors, musicians and carol singers bringing the timeless tale to life in a wholly unique way, with costumed storytelling by the fire.

Mulled wine, mince pies and children’s drinks will be on sale and there will be special Family Christmas Craft sessions at intervals throughout the weekends, including the chance to make some beautiful Christmas decorations. See the website for further details about timings.

by Deck the Halls, a winter flower festival with the NAFAS South West Area Competitions.

There will be hands-on floristry sessions and festival floral displays, the largest of which will be up to two metres high.

Apart from Father Christmas, all other events during Christmas at the Palace are included in standard admission.

So is Wells really plastic free?

Meredith Roberts of Plastic Free Wells explains why the group’s work is not yet completed IN July we announced that Wells had been officially accredited, by the conservation charity Surfers Against Sewage, as a ‘Plastic Free’ community. We are often asked what this actually means, as there is clearly still a lot of plastic around the city.

It in fact means single-use plastic free, as it is this wasteful throw-away plastic that we are particularly trying to eliminate.

Not all of Wells is single-use plastic free yet, but we are hopeful that the majority of businesses will be in the near future.

You may have noticed our new logos appearing in shop windows or behind counters – this logo is awarded by us to eateries and businesses who use little or no single-use plastic and

who stock a variety of sustainable alternatives.

We are encouraging people to view these logos as a badge of ethical choice (just as the Fair Trade mark signifies) and to support these local businesses for their sustainability.

Almost all of the most popular sustainable products that people are switching to are available to buy in one of your local Wells shops.

1955 Air Cadets reunion night THE 1955 (City of Wells) Squadron Air Cadets are putting out a call to past Air Cadets, staff, committee and friends to join them for a reunion on Friday, November 9.

The celebration will start at the squadron HQ in Webbs Close at 7.30pm before moving on to a room at the Swan Hotel at 9pm.

Vicar lands his own radio show GLASTONBURY FM has a new recruit.

The Rev Paul Clarke, vicar of St Matthew’s Church in Wookey, has his own weekly show on the community radio station for Glastonbury, Street and Wells.

Called Can you believe it?!, Paul’s show goes out every Thursday between 1pm and 2pm and is a mixture of news, views and faith stories. He has already recruited the Rt Rev Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath and Wells, and the Rt Rev Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton, to share their stories.

GFM listeners will already know Paul from his regular Pause for Thought slot. Hosting his own show is a big step up, but it is one he is very excited about.

“One of the most powerful parts of the programme is how people came to faith,” he said. “It is a real privilege to listen to their experiences. There will be many others who will identify with these stories and think, ‘I’m not the only one’.”

A CHRISTMAS market with a difference is coming to Wells in December, as all the stallholders normally sell their goods in an online marketplace.

Across the UK, on the same weekend, designers, makers and creatives selling on Etsy.com can sell their handmade goods to local customers at Etsy Made Local markets. People have the opportunity to discover the diverse creativity in their county, meet the makers and shop locally for original handmade gifts.

This year, for the first time, the Somerset Etsy Team are hosting Etsy Made Local – Wells.

Tickets go on sale for mystery film AFTER another success at this year’s third Wells Festival of Film, Wells Film Centre and The Bishop’s Palace are already looking ahead to the fourth annual outdoor screening.

Tickets have now gone on sale for the 2019 film which, to add to the excitement, is yet to be announced.

“We wanted to try something a little different from our normal operation,” said Sally Cooper of Wells Film Centre.

“With so many secret cinemas and festivals doing well without knowing the film or headline acts, we thought we would give the people of Wells their own ‘secret cinema’.

“Year on year we put on an evening of events at the outdoor

screenings and hope customers will still be happy to join in our exciting weekend.’’

There will be two outdoor screenings, on Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27, 2019.

Tickets for these screenings will be £25 each but Wells Film Centre is offering an early bird special – people who get their tickets before the end of the year will pay this year’s festival ticket price of only £20. And no matter when they get their ticket, they will still get a drink, hog roast and the yearly pre-show entertainment included.

Charity makes gardens appeal ST Margaret’s Hospice is keen to recruit people from the Wells area who might be willing to open their gardens next summer to help raise funds for the charity.

A celebration event was held at Brympton House, near Yeovil, to thank the Somerset gardeners who opened their gardens, allotments and farms this summer to raise funds totalling £16,600 for the hospice. Each garden owner and volunteer received a thank you certificate, presented by Marisa Lovell-Fox, head of fundraising.

But organisers say the Wells area was under-represented and they would like to encourage more people to take part next year. Susan Bickle, the scheme

coordinator, said: “We are keen to hear from anyone who would like to take part in the 2019 season either to open their garden, allotment, orchard or farm, or to offer help as a garden volunteer.

“There are many ways to support the scheme, even if you are unable to open a garden, such as having a plant sale, serving refreshments at your local flower show, or having a scarecrow trail in your village.

We are also seeking local businesses who would like to advertise in our 2019 Open Gardens brochure or donate a prize to the raffle.”

Jewellers given special plaque

PERSONAL service is key to the long lasting success of the Fisher family’s jewellery shop in Wells.

They tell the story of a customer who left her clock for repair saying “I will be back next week to collect it.”

In fact she returned 30 years later after moving to Australia, marrying, divorcing and returning to Fisher’s to collect the clock, which of course was waiting for her.

The shop was founded in 1919 by Leon Fisher, the greatgrandfather of the present boss Marcus, in the High Street premises now occupied by Specsavers.

Later the Fishers moved next door to where they are now.

To mark almost a century of service the Fishers were presented with the latest in a series of commemorative plaques given by Wells Civic Society as part of their campaign to support the long-standing family

TICKETS are now on sale for this year’s pantomime at Wells Little Theatre, Aladdin.

The traditional family pantomime, written by Vicky Orman and directed by Sharon Edmonds, will run from December 15-22.

There will be flashbangs from the start which can upset some very young children so people are warned to be aware of that when booking tickets.

A forklift truck was needed to weigh the Giant Pumpkin contest winner

Big challenge to weigh pumpkin COMPETITION organisers needed a forklift truck to carry a giant pumpkin to the scales at Wookey Hole Caves.

The giant fruit, which weighed in at 927.5 kilos, squashed all other entries in the Caves’ Giant Pumpkin challenge.

Director Daniel Medley more than 50 entrants had taken their produce to the weigh in - despite one of the most demanding growing seasons ever.

“The number of entries was incredible considering the long summer drought,” he said.

“Pumpkins demand large quantities of water and we know some of our local contestants

were using cider and apple juice to make up for the lack of rain through the summer.

“We had to employ security guards at the weigh in to ensure people didn’t help themselves to prize-winning pumpkin seeds, which can change hands for thousands of pounds.”

Overall winner of the competition was Ian Paton from Lymington, in Hampshire, who won the resort’s £1,000 prize for the heaviest specimen.

Prizes were also presented for the most perfect pumpkin and the spookiest carved or decorated pumpkin as chosen by the Witch of Wookey Hole.

Mike presents new face to world

Book will tell soldiers’ stories

FORMER postman Mike Evans has delivered nearly £400 for charity after having his hair and beard shaved off.

Mike decided to do a sponsored shave for Cancer Research in memory of his wife Margaret, who died in March.

The couple had been married for 47 years, and Mike was a postman in Wells for 20 years of that time until he retired three years ago.

“I’ve had lots of people saying well done,” said Mike, whose hair was shaved by Paddy of Chop, the barber’s in Broad Street Mike goes to when he wants a conventional haircut.

The close shave took place in front of crowds of onlookers in the courtyard of his regular watering hole The City Arms.

“I like it there, it’s a nice atmosphere. The staff are really good and they’re always smiling,” said Mike.

A TIMELY new book about Wells and the First World War is about to be published by Wells & Mendip Museum.

Entitled Lest we Forget … The men on the Wells War Memorial who died in the Great War, it has been written by Sue Curragh and Pete Trueman, and forms part of the museum’s Wells Remembers project.

The book tells the moving and often poignant stories of the 99 men named on the Wells War Memorial who died in the First World War. It tells of the lives they led before and during the war, and of the families they left behind. Some died early in the war whereas others nearly made it through. Some died of illness shortly after the war. Some never left England, whereas others fought as far away as East Africa.

The book will be on sale at Wells & Mendip Museum from Sunday, November 11, and will cost £10.

The annual civic Remembrance Day service at St Cuthbert’s Church and parade along High Street will follow from 9.45am, with earlier and longer than usual road closures because of the special nature of events. Sadler Street, High Street, St Cuthbert Street, Queen Street and Priest Row will be closed from 8am until noon, with carnival group volunteers supervising the closures.

The grassed area around the War Memorial at St Cuthbert’s Church will be closed off to the public to allow space for the congregation and number of dignitaries expected to attend, and make it easier for the wreath-layers. Members of the public will be able to watch from St Cuthbert Street and Priest Row. Mayor of Wells Councillor Celia Wride will take the salute in High Street as the parade makes its way to the Harry Patch Memorial outside Wells & Mendip Museum, where a

wreath will also be laid. Some people will then go to lay a wreath at the soldiers’ plaque at Wells Cemetery.

On the same day, there will be a demonstration by cadets outside The Bishop’s Palace, and the Somerset Poppies display created by thousands of children and organised by Coxley School teacher Dan Vidler will open to the public on the Palace Croquet Lawn.

A list of First World War commemoration events in Wells can be seen on the Wells City Council website: wells.gov.uk At 7.05pm, Wells Town Crier Len Sweales will be one of 100 town criers throughout the UK and around the world who will join together in an International Cry for Peace. Len’s cry will take place in the Market Place.

known as Feral. Len said: “He liked my rhymes and asked if I would read his poem about the soldiers. I was so impressed I asked if I could make it a cry for others to hear.”

This cry will take place in the Market Place at 11am.

Other Remembrance activities this year include the creation of a Garden of Remembrance in front of the Cathedral’s West Front. A giant poppy has been made by the Cathedral’s works department to be placed on a sloping bed of gravel, that will be soft enough for people to plant with wooden crosses bearing personal messages. The crosses are available at both of the Cathedral shops, and at Wells supermarkets.

“A lot of work by a lot of people has gone into the many events going on,” said Derek.

“As the Royal British Legion of Wells, we hope that people will come along and spend some of their time looking at some of these wonderful things and share in this very special time of remembrance – 100 years since the end of the First World War.”

THE London Mozart Players will perform at Wells Cathedral for the first time on November 10, when Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society commemorates the end of the First World War with the cantata For an Unknown Soldier

by Jonathan Dove and Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem.

Also performing in this special concert are the Choristers of Wells Cathedral Choir.

Dove, who will attend the performance, studied first-hand accounts of warfare then turned to the poetry of the time as concentrated text for his piece.

Churches stage trail of poppies CHURCHES in Wells will be decorated with thousands of hand-knitted and crocheted poppies in November.

The Cathedral, The Bishop’s Palace Chapel, St Thomas’ Church, Ss Joseph and Teresa’s Church, St Cuthbert’s Church and the Methodist Church are all taking part in the Wells Churches Poppy Trail from Monday, November 5, until Monday, November 12. There will also be boards on loan from Wells & Mendip Museum giving information of those who served and died in the First World War. A map is available at each church which states opening times.

Special anthem SS Joseph and Teresa’s Church will be holding a Remembrance Mass at 11am on November 11, during which a new anthem by Wells composer Veronica Barlow will be played.

The BBC’s Alex Lovell at the museum with pupils from St Cuthbert’s School

BBC films children on visit to museum ONE hundred pupils from St Cuthbert’s Junior School in Wells visited the First World War trench at Wells and Mendip Museum as part of their learning about the commemoration of the end of the war.

The children had the added excitement of being filmed as part of BBC Points West’s commemorations and proudly showed off their knowledge and thoughts on the subject to programme presenter Alex Lovell.

On arrival at the museum the children were greeted by museum education officer Donnie Houser and the creator of the trench, Geoff Dickson.

The children gathered by the portrait of Harry Patch and it was obvious from their answers to questions put by Donnie that they were all very well informed about Harry and his connection to the First World War. The BBC camera crew followed them as they went through the trench which they thought was “awesome” and “scary”, although they thought that it was “very sad that so many people died in the fighting”.

They then saw the Lewis Gun emplacement, the exhibit showing the horrors of the Battle for Passchendaele, a representation of the Cedars Red Cross Hospital which received

wounded soldiers from the front line, and tried on some of the uniforms worn by the soldiers.

They then handled some of the medals won by soldiers from Wells and heard some stories of the Wells men who died.

The children were very moved by the exhibits, asked some interesting questions and made some moving observations.

The First World War in their opinions was “utterly horrible” and “disgusting”.

They thought that the Christmas truce was a good idea as “no-one would want to die on Christmas Day”, but couldn’t understand why the soldiers carried on with the war when they had played football and exchanged presents and “come into harmony for one day”.

The children understood the power, value and symbolism of the poppy in remembrance as the day before their museum visit they had made their poppies as part of The Somerset Poppies project.

Alex Lovell was very impressed by the children and interested in their reactions to the museum displays and their impressions of war.

It is hoped that the piece will be broadcast in the programme on November 6 at 6.30pm on BBC 1.

n REMEMBRANCE Beacon being lit as part of UKwide tribute

Wells District Brownies, Rainbows and Guides took part in the District Poppy Challenge as part of the commemorations to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Girls spent an afternoon in the Methodist Church Hall sewing poppies for the Wells Churches Poppy Trail, making poppy-themed windmills or pinwheels, and baking biscuits in the shape of poppies.

ON the evening of November 11, organisations and communities the length and breadth of the United Kingdom will be taking part in the nation’s commemoration to mark the end of the First World War. St Cuthbert (Out) Parish Council will be taking part in the Battle’s Over national event.

Residents of all ages are invited to remember the sacrifice of millions of men and women in a series of events at the Battle’s Over in Wookey Hole.

The Last Post will be played at 6.55pm, and after darkness has fallen, at 7pm, a beacon of light will be lit.

This beacon will be linking to more than a thousand other lit beacons around the country, symbolising the light of hope

Cathedral to be a focal point of commemoration activities WELLS Cathedral will be commemorating the centenary of the end of the First World War with a number of exhibitions, events and services.

The 100 Days of Prayer for Peace initiative continues until November 11; chaplains will say prayers with a First World War theme at the medieval clock in the Cathedral’s north transept, where the Paschal candle also stands lit.

From Monday, October 29, to Friday, November 16, a knitted poppies display will cascade down the Cathedral’s Chapter House steps to the war memorial in the north transept. All poppies will have been knitted or crocheted by local volunteers and the display is also part of a city-wide trail taking place at the time. First World War themed artwork by local schools will also feature in the niches of the Chapter House.

Wooden crosses will be available from all poppy points, including the Cathedral shops; messages can be written on them and planted in a giant poppy.

Messages can be written on a poppy petal and all poppies will be released from the West End Gallery during the November 11 Remembrance Sunday Rutter Requiem service at 3pm.

The No News of Fred exhibition returns to the Cathedral’s south cloister from Friday, November 2, until Friday, November 16. This poignant exhibition features the story of Fred, a member of the Somerset Light Infantry Regiment who was lost in action.

As part of a national initiative a lone piper will play at 6am on Cathedral Green on November 11 with ‘prayer for peace’ read by the Dean of Wells. Services throughout the day will mark the occasion including an act of remembrance at 11am as part of the Cathedral Eucharist and the Remembrance Sunday Rutter Requiem service (3pm-4pm); a devotional service interspersed with war poetry. All welcome.

On Monday, November 12, the Cathedral will be hosting a conference exploring ‘Conflict and Resolution’. Open to the public, this offers an opportunity to discuss these important issues.

Florist celebrates shop’s fifth anniversary FLORIST Lynnsey Kelly celebrated the fifth anniversary of her flower shop in Priest Row on October 14.

Lynnsey started her floristry business in Wells in 2001 with a twice weekly flower stall at Wells Market.

In 2013 she decided to take over an existing flower shop in Priest Row, overlooking St Cuthbert’s Church – and says it is one of the best decisions she has ever made.

“I’m so happy to celebrate five fabulous years in my lovely flower shop,” said Lynnsey.

“I’m incredibly fortunate to have wonderful customers, some from day one, back in 2001 on my flower stall at the market, and to enjoy continuing relationships with many businesses in and around Wells “The biggest compliment from a long-standing customer is that I have made 2 Priest Row a destination.

Lynnsey transformed the shop to reflect her style with the help of her husband Nick, and describes it as “an oasis of calm”.

She creates many of the floral arrangements herself, though she has a small team of florists and friends who help out at busy times such as around Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, or with big weddings.

She also tries to do something different from time to time.

Last Christmas, she ran some wreath-making workshops, and in the past year there have been occasional live music sessions.

“Through the last year we have enjoyed some musical mornings in the shop with Rafael Papo, a student at Wells Cathedral School, playing violin,” she said.

“He has now gone to New York to continue his studies there. But how privileged that such a talented musician chose my shop to play in.”

She added: “I’m very lucky to do a job that I truly love, and I’m looking forward to the next five years.”

Building projects win prestigious awards TWO Wells building projects have won prestigious awards for the high standard of their design and craftsmanship.

The winners of the William Stansell/Somerset Building Preservation Trust Awards were announced at a special ceremony at the Somerset Rural Life Museum, Glastonbury, in September.

Among the six winners were Wells Cathedral School’s Cedars Hall and a project to repair and re-order the interior of The Rib in St Andrew Street, Wells.

Russell Lillford, chairman of the Somerset Building Preservation Trust, said: “A total of 25 entries were received this year, all of a very high standard.

I congratulate all those who have won awards or have been commended – theirs is a

considerable achievement.”

The judges described Cedars Hall as: “An excellent example of an uncompromisingly contemporary building fitted comfortably into a sensitive historic setting.”

Of The Rib, owned by David Morgan-Hewitt and Paul Dickinson, they said: “A combination of excellent materials, workmanship and finishes with a good understanding of the building and what was needed without doing too much has resulted in a functional and beautiful set of interiors.”

Another award went to Jordans Shell Aviary in Ilminster, for which the specialist contractor in the repair of the building’s interior was Holy Well Glass of Wells.

THE three-day Nativity, Angel and Star Festival will return to St Cuthbert’s Church, Wells, this December by popular demand.

Each year, organisers try to include something different, and they are appealing to people who might have a Nativity set or an Angel that has not been on display before. Each set has a story to tell and often has great sentimental value, and they would love people to share that story. The festival is stewarded throughout.

TRAVELING Wilburys tribute band The Unravelling Wilburys are making a return visit to Wells after their sell-out concert last year organised by the City of Wells Lions.

“I believe we were the first to stage a concert in the recently refurbished St Thomas Church and the venue was perfect,” said Lions president Paul Clegg.

“I was surprised that so many people didn’t pick up on the band name until I mentioned who the members were.

Everyone recognises their classic songs.”

The Unravelling Wilburys replicate the sound and songs of

the late Eighties ‘super-group’ The Traveling Wilburys in which five of the greatest names in rock music history came together: George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne.

Race day trophies and cheques presented

CHEQUES totalling £4,292, mostly to local charities and good causes, were presented by Wells Lions at the awards ceremony in September to celebrate the annual Moat Boat Races which the Lions organise in partnership with Wells Air Cadets.

The event was held at The Swan Hotel in Wells, principal sponsors of the annual races which took place on the August Bank Holiday Monday.

The Swan Hotel provided a hot buffet with wine and soft drinks for the 70 people who attended.

Among the guests were Wells Mayor Celia Wride, Wells MP James Heappey, Masen Naidoo of Bluebird Care and Philip Welch representing Wells Dementia Action Alliance, also event sponsors.

They presented trophies to the winning raft teams, and a special award was given to Well Town Crier Len Sweales for his outstanding contribution to supporting the races and other Wells Lions events throughout the year.

The biggest cheque went to Wells St John Ambulance – £1,700 to buy advanced radio transmitters to communicate with each other when on duty at events.

The biggest surprise of the evening was reserved for sevenyear-old Amelia McKenna, a Wells girl who suffers from cystic fibrosis and needs a special body jacket to provide her with a daily massage treatment. Wells Lions heard of Amelia’s appeal after

reading about it in Wells Voice and immediately agreed to a grant of £500 towards the cost.

Wells Lions President Paul Clegg said: “Sometimes help and support is needed in the community by someone who

doesn’t quite know where to turn. We read of Amelia’s situation in Wells Voice and were able to respond in less than 24 hours. I guess that’s what comes of being part of and close to the community.”

Rogue traders ready to rip off vulnerable THROUGH the press, television and other media, ‘rogue trader’ has become a familiar term and one that may summon a particular type of person. But who really are rogue traders?

Rogue traders are any ‘company’ or individual who offers services on the doorstep, often with little or no means of identification, and go on to fleece or rip off their victims.

Rogue traders will knock on the door, saying they are working in the area, and will point out something like a loose tile on the person’s roof or that their drive needs resurfacing. They grossly over charge and then come back again and again, taking more money each time. They may even charge without completing the work.

Victims are often vulnerable, elderly and/or isolated people who know nothing of these scams and so are trusting of anyone who is friendly or seems

ON Wednesday, October 10, police were contacted by staff at NatWest bank in Wells concerned that an elderly female had been conveyed to the bank by a builder asking her to withdraw £300 cash for work that he hadn’t completed but that needed doing to her roof tiles.

Police attended and located the builder parked in Sadler Street waiting for the lady to return from the bank.

It transpired that two males had called at the victim’s door telling her that her roof tiles needed some work, she had asked the men to leave but they ignored her and started to put ladders up in order to gain access to her roof, the older male then convinced the victim to go with him to the bank to withdraw the cash leaving the other male at her home address.

Both males were arrested under the Fraud Act 2006.

When police conveyed the victim back to her home address it was clear that there was nothing wrong with her roof tiles, and there was no need for any works to be started or completed. The offenders had travelled to the Wells area from Berkshire, they were dealt with at Bridgwater Custody by Police Investigation Unit aided by Trading Standards.

THE following advice can help deter rogue traders: n If you have a spy hole please use it, if you are not expecting visitors and the caller looks suspicious then do not answer the door. n Always put the chain on the front door if you do answer it. n Ask for identification. n If the caller is asking to do some repair work ask them to leave. n If they do not leave then close the door and call 999. n If your neighbour is elderly and you suspect rogue traders are calling and scamming them call 999.

A 32-year-old man has been issued with a Criminal Behaviour Order banning him from certain areas of Wells and Glastonbury.

Mark Darbo, pictured right, was handed the CBO at Somerset Magistrates Court in September. This follows numerous reports of Darbo behaving in an anti-social way, including street drinking and nuisance behaviour, within the Mendip area over a long period of time, according to Avon and Somerset police.

Darbo is now banned from entering central areas of Wells and Glastonbury between noon and 8am.

also state that Darbo is banned from having an open alcohol container in those areas and must not remain on any retail premises, within the area, if he has been asked to leave by a member of staff.

Julie Crockett, ASB coordinator for Somerset, said: “This was an ongoing problem and there were lots of reports from businesses and residents in Glastonbury and Wells. Previous interventions to prevent Darbo’s behaviour had failed to stop him.

“Getting the CBO order issued demonstrates how communities, businesses, police and partner agencies can work together to address persistent anti-social behaviour.”

Dementia walk raises £1,000 ALMOST 100 walkers, some with dogs, turned out for the annual Walk for Wells Dementia on Sunday, September 30, which began from The Bishop’s Palace and ended at the Swan Hotel.

“Over £1,000 was raised and more is coming in,” said chairman of Wells Dementia Action Alliance, Arnold Wills.

“Thanks to Tom Ronan and Jenny Atkins from Bluebird Care and their helpers for planning the route of the walk and general organisation.

“We’re planning another walk next September and have been approached by local walking groups and organisations who’ve undergone dementia

awareness training who wish to be involved.”

All money raised from the walks is used for dementia projects in Wells and the nearby area.

WELLS Cathedral School says it is allocating funds “as widely as possible” after a report in The Guardian suggested that money from the government’s Music and Dance Scheme intended for less well off pupils was going to wealthier families.

The fund aims to give talented children from families with limited financial means the opportunity to attend one of eight independent music or dance schools.

Cathedral School head master Alastair Tighe said: “As one of the schools privileged to be able to nurture outstanding musical talent through this means-tested scheme, Wells Cathedral School is determined to ensure that funds are allocated as widely as possible so that talent and potential win through in a wide variety of musical genres, irrespective of family circumstances or income.”

Paula wins Slimmer of Year award SUPER slimmer Paula Denyer has won a Slimmer of the Year award after losing nearly six stone in weight.

Paula, who is the wife of St Cuthbert’s Church vicar Sam, managed to shed 79lbs in nine months with the help of Wells Cambridge Weight Plan consultant CarolineF. “I’ve tried group weight loss clubs before and never managed to lose weight like this,” said Paula.

“I was heading for a knee replacement and now I’m pain

free, I can walk to work and do everything I want to with my family.”

CarolineF said that Paula had been a model client. She said: “In nine months she’s lost weight every week except one and yet she’s been on holiday, celebrated birthdays and weddings and kept focused.

“I am awarding her Slimmer of the Year 2018; she is a wonderful ambassador for the diet and is now taking clients herself to guide others on their weight-loss journey.”

Glittering ceremony a celebration of contemporary art THE winners of this year’s Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) international visual arts competition and selling exhibition was announced at a glittering reception held in The Bishop’s Palace.

WAC chair, Paddy O’Hagan, welcomed the visitors to a celebration of the event, which has gone from thoughts around the kitchen table six years ago to an internationally renowned competition that received almost 1,400 entries from 26 different countries in 2018.

“WAC is playing its part in promoting and presenting contemporary art in a way that is easily accessible. There are actually seven venues across Wells that are celebrating visual arts throughout October so I think we’ve been able to show categorically that you don’t need to visit a big metropolitan city to see great art,” he said.

Five prizes were presented, totalling an impressive value of £20,000. Local artists Candace Bahouth, from Pilton, and Toni Davey, from Frome, were among the winners. They were selected

for the DAC Beachcroft Space Prize and will be exhibiting in Bristol early next year.

Toni was also selected to take part in a joint exhibition with three other winning artists at the JGM Gallery next to the Royal College of Art in London in 2019.

South Horrington art gallery, Andelli Art, also provided one of the prizes: the Next Generation Art Prize, awarded to an artist under the age of 30 years.

This was presented to South Korean, Minyoung Choi. The prize includes a two-week solo exhibition at the gallery.

The RK Harrison Award of £1,000 was awarded to artist Ian Bruce for his moving hand painted animation called Double Portrait, which portrays the illfated relationship between Wells resident Geraldine Peacock and Bob Gannicott.

Ian was also the winner of the Chubb Bulleid People’s Prize, selected by visitors to the exhibition. Visitors were able to cast a vote for their favourite work of art in the exhibition, that took place between October 6 and 21.

HERITAGE Courtyard Gallery and Studios, in the heart of Wells, has made it their mission to support, encourage and showcase some of the finest contemporary artists in the region.

The Gallery and Studios are jointly run by Heather Wallace and Rebecca Barnard.

They say that Somerset, and Wells in particular, has an amazing array of creative talent, and both agree that creative people need support and encouragement.

“We wanted to create a quality platform for artists at all levels, from beginners to dedicated full time practitioners,” said Heather.

“Our aim is to provide a supportive and stimulating environment, as well as be a hub for all the community to enjoy a variety of contemporary art, in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.”

The CHILL winter exhibition will run from November 17 to December 19 CHILL is the Gallery and Studios’ annual winter exhibition showcasing studio artists alongside selected West Country fine artists and makers. The exhibition opens on Saturday, November 17.

The exhibition runs until December 19.

Charity launches new sponsorship scheme HEADS Up, the local charity running a mental health and wellbeing day centre for the benefit of the local community, is launching a new Friends of Heads Up sponsorship scheme.

The launch event will take place on Tuesday, November 27, at the South Horrington centre from 2pm-5pm.

Local people and businesses are invited to attend to find out more about the new scheme, and how to support this inspirational service.

Heads Up offers valuable services to people across Mendip diagnosed with dementia, mental health conditions and other disabilities.

Many of its clients have experienced social isolation, which can have a negative impact on their mental health and recovery. The charity provides for them a safe and therapeutic environment, peer support and a range of groups and activities.

There are fully equipped pottery and woodwork facilities, an award-winning sensory garden, and clients are encouraged and supported to participate in community-based projects.

The service is also of benefit to carers, providing them with temporary respite and invaluable peer support.

“Our service helps clients on the road to recovery, promotes mental wellbeing, and provides opportunities for learning new skills,” said service director Bridget Harvey.

“There are so many inspiring stories of our clients successfully moving on to education, employment and fulfilling lives.

“Our ambition is to grow further the service to meet the greater needs of our community. One in four people in the UK has a mental health problem, and one in six people over 80 years have a diagnosis of dementia. These statistics are predicted to increase in the future.

“We also have some exciting new projects lined up: The Silence is Golden silent disco started on October 2; a 12-week self-management course called The Future’s Bright started on October 12; and thanks to generous support from JH Haskins, a Shepton Mallet-based carers’ group will start next February.

“Other planned projects include a physical fitness programme, and one embracing technology equipment such as video-linked virtual exercise bikes. Heads Up’s future aspirations include an Arts & Music Centre.”

The silent disco at Heads Up

Donation gets dancing started MUSIC lovers at Heads Up have danced the day away at their first silent disco thanks to support from a Somerset housebuilder.

Visitors and carers donned new headphones and put on their dancing shoes for the inaugural event after Bovis Homes, which is building at Priory Fields in Wells, gave the charity a donation of £500.

Bridget Harvey, service director at Heads Up, said: “This fantastic donation from Bovis

Homes has allowed those that use the centre to get on the dance floor and enjoy their first-ever silent disco here.

“It was a tremendous success – music is wonderful for the mind and soul – and those that took part clearly benefited from listening to their favourite songs in what was a great social event.”

Bovis Homes’ donation will also be used towards running costs and dementia classes as well as more silent discos.

Shed gives men space to work together A MEN’S Shed has been opened at Heads Up to help bring people together in a bid to combat loneliness.

The shed at the mental health charity’s site at South Horrington will give men – and women – a safe environment in which to pursue hobbies such as woodwork, while encouraging them to socialise with each other.

“A Men’s Shed is a giant extension of the shed at the bottom of the garden,” said Martin Curran, chairman of the Wells Community Shed group running the project, at the opening ceremony.

“It can combat isolation and loneliness and bring people together in the community.”

Heads Up trustee Carolle Skeates thanked the Freemasons for providing the finance for the project. Wells Lions were also thanked for contributing funds.

Siblings singing together in choir FOR the first time in a decade, a trio of choristers from the same family is singing together in Wells Cathedral as part of the Wells Cathedral Choir.

Siblings Cecilia, aged 13; Daniel, aged 11; and now Estella Fawden, aged 8, are all choristers at Wells Cathedral, and have the opportunity to sing with each other when the girl and boy choristers perform jointly in Cathedral services.

Cecilia and Daniel are both now in their fourth year as Cathedral choristers, having joined Wells Cathedral School and the choir in Years 6 and 4, respectively. Estella has followed the same path as her older sister and brother, starting in the choir this September, and joining Year 4 at the school.

All three Fawden siblings hail from Somerset, and have enjoyed singing since a young age. They have all attended the annual Be a Chorister for a Day event held at Wells Cathedral each October and enjoyed the day so much that they applied to audition for the choir following the event.

n NEWS IN BRIEF Mental health course A COURSE being run in Wells will give people the chance to gain an internationally accredited mental health qualification.

Mental health instructor Kay Morgan is offering the two-day Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course on November 30 and December 7.

By the end of the two days of learning, delegates will have a deeper understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect people’s wellbeing, the confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress, and the knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support.

Something must be done about chaotic situation in North Road TWO site meetings were held in October on the chaos of North Road in Wells.

The first was on October 4, when I spoke to Mendip District Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Tom Killen, and the prospective Conservative candidate for the district election for St Thomas’ Ward, Richard Greenwell.

Their timing was perfect for them to see at first hand the children arriving to Stoberry Park Primary School. They were able to witness for themselves the traffic building up and causing mayhem outside the gates and along North Road.

This twice daily chaotic situation is exacerbated by the Wells Cathedral School having no parking on site for employees and sixth form students who choose to drive to school. The fact that it is also a local shortcut to Bath Road is adding to the

dangers of this very busy road.

The second visit was made

by James Heappey, MP for Wells, on October 5. He met with me to discuss Somerset County Council’s decision not to lay double yellow lines on this dangerous stretch of North Road. This measure, due to be completed at the same time as lines were laid on Welsford Avenue, Burcott Road and St John Street several months ago, had been passed by Wells City Council and ‘signed off’ by the Highways Department at Somerset County Council, but was ‘postponed’ by Cllr Tessa Munt. James spent approximately an hour talking about the road and both schools.

He walked the area and took with him photographs of the traffic and documentation that I have collected and collated over the last four years.

Wendy Payne Stoberry Residents Association Campaigner Tessa Munt responds: As Wendy and her neighbours know, I have met with them, with representatives from local employers, school parents and staff, and with members of the county council’s Highways’ team to discuss safety and parking provision in the area around Stoberry School.

I take everyone’s concerns extremely seriously and we are all working to find a solution as soon as is practicable.

There are a number of initiatives under consideration and I await responses from those

involved. As anyone who attends PACT (Police & Community Together) meetings will know, residents in over 30 other roads in Wells have requested changes to parking, access, crossings and speed limits too. Making changes in one area may have a detrimental impact on others, so I am grateful to the Highways team for the time, expertise and help they have given to working through the issues in this particular part of Wells.

THE Wells Railway Fraternity’s final event for its 50th anniversary was a dinner held at the Swan Hotel, Wells, on Tuesday, October 9, attended by 59 members and guests.

After a delicious meal, Wells Mayor Celia Wride presented a cheque for £1,500 to David Maidment, chairman of the Fraternity’s chosen charity, The Railway Children. The money was raised from donations for coffee at meetings, and a stall at the annual model railway exhibition Railwells.

This was followed by an illustrated talk by Colin Boocock entitled Mozart to Moldova. The talk followed a holiday by Colin and his wife Mary, mostly by train through eight countries of Europe; and was very much enjoyed by all present.

Everyone agreed that the event was a wonderful ending to a year of events celebrating the Fraternity’s 50th year.

OUR October meeting attracted over 50 women, including some new guests. General news included a report that the gourmet club had enjoyed cooking and eating a Persian meal; the crafters were planning to try different techniques for printing onto brown paper; and the skittles team were about to play in the first round of the county championship. Members were preparing for the Wells Food Festival, where they were helping serve refreshments to producers.

Volunteers were sought to shake collecting tins at the Wells Carnival in aid of the Hope for Tomorrow bus that enables people with cancer to have chemotherapy treatment locally at West Mendip Hospital.

Thoughts are turning to Christmas. Tickets were organised for the live broadcast of The Nutcracker ballet from the Royal Opera House at Strode Theatre and the WI carol service at Wells Cathedral. Members will be filling useful bags with gloves, socks, torches and sweets and bringing them to the next two meetings for the Elim Connect Centre to give to the homeless.

Members voted to go out for “Christmas” dinner in late January again.

The main event was a talk from our member Tessa Munt, our former MP, about her life in politics. Becoming an MP had been Tessa’s childhood ambition ever since the local MP visited her school, but it would take another 33 years to achieve her dream. However, she feels the wide work experience gained in education, hospitality, social services and housing proved invaluable when she was eventually elected to represent the people of Wells in 2010.

Having been elected to Somerset County Council 17 months ago, Tessa urged us all to get involved in politics, especially at a local level. She pointed out that historically, only 17 of the 41 parish councils in the Wells seat have held elections because of a shortage of people willing to take part.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, November 6, at 7.30pm at the Wells & Mendip Museum.

New women are always welcome and can attend as guests before deciding to join.

WELLS CIVIC SOCIETY TWO sides of the same coin; two minds with a single thought: descriptions of the two talks, different yet essentially interlocking, which the audience at the October meeting of the Wells Civic Society had not only the pleasure, but the poignant experience, of hearing The theme which connected the presentations of the two speakers, Sue Curragh and Dan Vidler, was remembrance of local servicemen who died in the First World War. Some 14 years of work and research, which she warmly acknowledged had been much supported by Clare Blackmore and her trawling of the Wells Journal archives, has resulted, much to Sue’s surprise, in a book, to be published by the Wells and Mendip museum before Armistice Day, Lest We Forget, in which she recounts the lives of 98 of the 99 names on the Wells war memorial, just one eluding all her research efforts.

But at the civic society, she recounted what she had learned about just five of these victims of war. They were a rich crosssection of the men of the time.

So he reminded members of what the very small school at Coxley, where Dan is a teacher, has done since 2014 by way of the The Somerset Poppies and The Somerset Shrouds of the Somme, before illustrating what these rather profound initiatives have snowballed into this year.

Now, some 20 schools will be involved and 4,982 children will hand-make 7,986 silk poppies, each one representing the loss of life of a Somerset serviceman during the war. They will be on free display in the Bishop’s Palace, from November 11-25.

It’s another double-speaker event at the next meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday, November 14. Sarah Villiers will be talking with an intriguing title, The smells of Wells, which is actually about waterways, past, present and future, and Tom Ronan and members of his team will speak on the very topical subject of Plastic Free Wells.

It’s all in the Wells & Mendip Museum, and non-members are welcome to come for a taster.

Fine concert filled with special moments Midsomer Norton & Radstock Silver Band Autumn Concert St Thomas’ Church, Wells THE Midsomer Norton & Radstock Silver Band held their autumn concert at St Thomas’ Church on October 6. After a very busy summer season St Thomas’ is an exciting new venue for the band in 2018.

Musical director Joanne Sykes conducted a varied programme centred around the theme of Reflect and Celebrate to commemorate not only the centenary year of the end of the Great War but also of the formation of the Royal Air Force.

Blockbusters included 633 Squadron, Dambusters March and a thrilling performance of Peter Graham’s epic work Cry of the Celts, each movement featuring the band’s talented soloists.

Midsomer Norton & Radstock Silver Band in St Thomas’ Church evening concert was BBC Radio Somerset’s Claire Carter, no stranger to the brass concert circuit in Wells. Perhaps more surprising on the night was the appearance a of BBC television cameraman recording for a Points West bulletin.

Guest soloists featured highly in the cleverly crafted programme. Stephen Sykes masterfully performed his feature

solo of the night, Stardust, in front of a spellbound audience.

Less than two years ago Stephen was critically ill with late stage Hodgkins Lymphoma and barely able to lift his trombone let alone play it. A rallying cry was put out to the worldwide brass band community and vital funds were raised to pay for the special treatment needed to save his life.

occasion, his first public performance since his illness struck and it did not disappoint.

The musical variety did not stop there. Siona Stockel, soprano, together with Nicola Bracey, piano, both professional musicians resident in Wells, brought a touch of nostalgia to the evening with a selection of songs made famous by Forces Sweetheart, the legendary Vera Lynn. The concert was rounded off in fine style with an encore that raised the roof.

Players celebrate league triumph WELLS Tennis Club men’s A team celebrated bringing the North Somerset League trophy to the city after a victorious summer season, rounded off by a 9-4 win at Wedmore A.

Having only just been promoted to Division One, the A team had an amazing season thanks to the commitment and determination of a dedicated band of regular players.

THE Junior section of Wells City Football Club continues to go from strength to strength and it has developed a reputation as one of the strongest youth football clubs in the region.

Teams spanning from Under10s up to Under-16s benefit from FA-qualified coaches and regular league football. More importantly, the club’s volunteer coaches have created a fun, safe and inclusive environment in which the children under their care have thrived.

The U10s have three teams playing in the Yeovil League, in which they have won 12 of their 13 league games between them so far this season, drawing the other. They are the current holders of the Yeovil League Champions Cup. The U10s also have a team in the Midsomer Norton League, which at the moment is used as a development platform for its newer players.

The age group has the benefit of having three FA-qualified coaches and trains on Sunday mornings, 9.45am-11.15am, at The Athletic Ground. They count Vobster, St Andrews Press, Tee Time Catering and Joggle Masonry among their sponsors.

The club’s U11s, which consist of Year 6 students aged

from 10-11, have three teams.

One plays in the Junior Premier League, a national league which is the highest league standard possible. They also have two teams in the Yeovil and District Youth League. All three teams have enjoyed great success.

The group is supported by a team of five coaches, all of whom are FA qualified. Their sponsors are IIT Carpentry, Soldi Construction, Hello Wired, Bookers, Wessex Water, LJ Lettings, Glentworth Insurance and Travis Perkins.

In the winter months they train on the astro at Wells Blue School every Wednesday from 6pm-7pm. They return to the Athletic Ground for training during British Summer Time.

The U12s train at The Athletic Ground in the summer months on Tuesdays from 6pm–7.30pm, and in the winter months on The Blue School astro from 7pm-8pm.

They have two teams, one in the Midsomer Norton Youth League Division 1, of which they are top, and one in Division 2.

Both play matches at The Athletic Ground on Sunday afternoons.

n SPORT Good example of golf’s benefits SOME may agree with Mark Twain’s belief that “Golf is a good walk spoilt” but the many health benefits of playing golf are hard to ignore. Played regularly, golf can help to increase fitness levels, reduce stress and be part of an active social life enjoyed at any age.

There is no finer example of this than Wells Golf Club member Pamela Manuel who has been a member of the club for more than 32 years.

Pamela recently had the pleasure of presenting her own daughter, Erica Klim, with the Pamela Manuel Trophy – specifically designed for the over 60s – for winning the October Medal Competition at the first attempt.

Erica and other volunteers are actively involved with mentoring many of the new lady members who have begun playing golf through the ‘Women in Golf’ initiative launched earlier this year.

Wells City U14s comprise Year 9 students aged between 13 and 14. The team has started the season well with wins in the first round of the County Cup and in the seeding games to place it in Division 1 of the Midsomer Norton & District Youth League.

The sponsors are Chalmers HB chartered accountants of Wells who have sponsored the team since 2016. Their

continuing support is vital for the team and is greatly appreciated.

The U14s train at Wells City FC on a Friday evening in the summer months and at the Blue School astro pitches in the winter (7pm-8pm). Matches are also played at the Wells City club on a Sunday afternoon.
