New moves to provide post office services THE Post Office has started looking for a new location for a post office in Wells, as it has not been able to proceed with the planned move to Peacocks.

Wells Post Office in Market Place closed in July and a move to Peacocks had been agreed but has never come to fruition.

The future of Peacocks is now in doubt after the Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group, which owns several high street chains including Peacocks and Edinburgh Woollen Mill, announced plans to call in administrators, putting stores and jobs in jeopardy. ‘Closing Down Sale’ signs have gone up in the windows of the Peacocks and Edinburgh Woollen Mill shops in Wells.

The Post Office says that it is going to enhance post office services at Budgens on Bath Road, and try again to find a business willing to provide post office services in Wells city centre.

Cinema reopening plans as donations top £5,000 WELLS Film Centre has announced plans to reopen in December. It has also seen donations to a crowdfunding appeal to help it through these difficult times exceed £5,500.

The cinema shut for four months when lockdown started, reopening in July only to find that films were pulled or release dates moved back, and cinemagoers stayed away.

It closed again on September 25, hoping to be back in November for the scheduled release of the new James Bond film No Time To Die. This has now been moved to next April, but the film centre still aims to show films again from Friday, December 4.

Film centre proprietor Sally Cooper said that the Save Your Cinema campaign reported in last month’s Wells Voice has been a big success. As well as

the donations, there have been numerous messages of support for the cinema and its staff.

“All of us at the Wells Film Centre have been overwhelmed by not only the amount of donations from customers, but also the amount of wonderful messages, emails and calls we have received,” said Sally.

“During these difficult times, having all the support and wonderful words mean the world to us and are giving us the strength to carry on and prepare for reopening again.”

Steve Clare has been working in stained glass for 40 years

MBE for stained glass craftsman A WELLS man has been awarded an MBE for his services to stained glass conservation.

Steve Clare is co-director with his son Jack of Holy Well Glass, the company he set up in 1995.

He is regarded as one of the country’s leading stained glass craftsmen, and was awarded the MBE in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.

“It’s brilliant. I was really thrilled,” said Steve.

He received the news of his award by email, and wondered at first whether it was a spoof.

The 62-year-old has been working in stained glass for 40 years and is pleased that the MBE is related to the craft, helping to maintain its profile.

“It’s vital to keep the heritage up together in all the great buildings,” he added.

The Holy Well Glass studio relocated from Lovers Walk to larger premises at The Old Mill in West Street, Wells, in 2018 –

the same year that the company was granted a Royal Warrant.

It employs 18 people and is the largest stained glass studio in the UK. “We’ve got a talented group of people with quite an emphasis on youth. We’ve always got apprentices – that’s a big aspect of the MBE,” said Steve.

“The firm’s really thriving. In the last decade we’ve gone from strength to strength, more than I ever could have imagined.”

The company has carried out work on Wells Cathedral’s famous Jesse Window, and other projects have included work on Winchester and Arundel cathedrals and Windsor Castle.

It is currently carrying out work at Kings College, Cambridge, and at the Liberty department store in London where it is restoring every window in the building. “It should look really splendid when it’s finished,” said Steve.

One potential new site for post office services is Natural Pets of Wells in Queen Street. Owners Nigel and Heather Derrick had previously expressed an interest in offering post office services there, before Peacocks became the preferred location. They have renewed contact with the Post Office, and had a visit by a Post Office representative to assess the practical aspects of having post office services installed.

“We are intending to commence the formal application process if advised we can do so,” they said.

“We will be happy to make all the required changes to the

current shop fittings layout if our application is approved by the Post Office.”

Because of the detailed nature of the application process, even if they are successful, the Post Office is unlikely to have anything in place until the early months of next year.

The enhanced service provision at Budgens could mean the installation of a second post office till there. Richie Church, the postmaster at Budgens, said he is pushing for a second till, but this has not yet been agreed.

In the meantime, Wells City Council is trying to find somewhere to site a mobile pop-up post office unit to provide post office services in the run up to Christmas. A unit has been reserved and discussions are taking place with business owners and organisations, but options are limited as doorways need to be at least 90cm wide for the unit to fit through. The Post Office also needs to find somebody to run the unit.

Town Clerk Steve Luck said: “Following the collapse of the move of the post office to the Peacocks store, the Post Office are in talks with another interested retailer.

“In the meantime the city council are working with the Post Office to try and secure a pop-up post office in the city centre as a matter of urgency. Several site options are being discussed along with the employment of a temporary staff member by the Post Office.”

The Peacocks and Edinburgh Woollen Mill shops in Wells have both continued to trade as usual, but staff say they do not know what is going to happen in the longer term and are awaiting more information.

New restaurant THE Market Place building that did house Wells Post Office is to become a Thai restaurant.

Mendip District Council has approved plans for a change of use from post office to restaurant, including associated internal alterations.

Welcome return of local loyalty scheme IT’S back. It’s better. And it’s gathering wide support.

The original Wells Loyalty League was launched more than 20 years ago by Basil Mogg, who ran a garden centre in Ash Lane, and Michael Chamberlain, assistant editor of the Wells Journal.

Now it has returned, brighter and more modern, to help Wells city centre through the coronavirus crisis.

Shoppers are being given a loyalty card which the retailers will stamp with the value of the purchase. When there are £100 worth of stamps on the card it is dropped into a box at the town hall Tourist Information Centre.

Every month completed cards will be drawn and the winners given five £10 vouchers to spend in shops run by league members.

There will be supplies of these free cards at all participating retailers and the Tourist Information Centre at the town hall.

Four volunteers came together to relaunch the league.

Two retailers, Robert Powell of Basil Powell Shoes and Rob Bevan of Protec, and two city councillors – Louis Agabani and Philip Welch, now the Mayor of Wells.

Then Town Clerk Steve Luck offered to become treasurer and Alison Luck the secretary – both working unpaid in their own time.

“It is very exciting to revitalise a loyalty scheme in Wells again,” said Robert Powell.

“It gives retailers the opportunity to work together to reward the loyal shoppers of Wells. It will also highlight

Company apologises for any disruption TRUESPEED has apologised for any inconvenience caused while work takes place in Wells on its broadband infrastructure.

Temporary traffic lights and queuing traffic have become common sights around the city while trenches are dug and cables are laid.

One resident, Paul Hambleton, who lives in Ash Lane, said that the roadworks have caused chaos in his road, and that the trenches dug have been inadequately filled and sealed, leaving the road looking like a “patchwork quilt”.

“It is absolute chaos in Ash Lane,” he said. “Somerset Highways are dealing with all the defects and chaos that Truespeed are causing.”

Truespeed, based in Bath, said in a statement that it always aims to minimise disruption and ensure that work meets

its quality standards. It said: “As a local company driven by a community focused ethos, Truespeed are passionate about bringing ultrafast broadband to hard to reach and difficult to connect areas who have been left behind by other providers.

In our efforts to deliver a brand new network that will benefit residents and businesses for decades to come, we use a variety of deployment techniques and always aim to minimise any temporary disruption.

“We work closely with local authorities and the highways agency who went to inspect the site confirmed it was within building regulations. We’d like to assure the businesses and residents of Wells, that all local council regulations were followed and adhered to.

“Alongside this, we will be organising a secondary

A spokesman for Somerset County Council said of Ash Lane: “We inspect utility works as a

matter of course, and they can also be inspected as a result of concerns reported by members of the public. If a defect is found during these inspections, we contact the relevant utility with a request for them to return and undertake any remedial works.

“In this instance, it has been noted that the carriageway now has a patchwork effect. This is often the result of works over a period of years. Where possible, recently resurfaced roads are protected from future works for up to three years.”

No Remembrance service at war memorial this year FINAL arrangements have been made for this year’s Remembrance Service at St Cuthbert’s Church on Sunday, November 8. It will be invitation only and organisations will receive an invitation to nominate who they wish to represent them.

Wreath-laying will take place during the service inside the church. There will be no service outside at the war memorial and no parade up High Street. The

service will start at 10.15am and any organisation which ordered a wreath can collect it from the back of the church from 9.30am.

The laying of the Royal British Legion wreath at the Harry Patch Memorial and the memorial plaque at the cemetery will take place privately.

People will still be able to donate to this year’s Poppy Appeal and obtain a poppy, though arrangements will be very

different this year. Wells Legion branch will have a stall at Wells Market on Saturdays October 24, October 31 and November 7.

It also hopes to have some poppies and other items in a few more locations in Wells and the surrounding area.

Some supermarkets will have poppies available because of a direct arrangement between the stores and the Legion.

Schools packs have been

delivered to local schools.

Donations can also be made by texting 70545 and putting POPPY2 for £2, POPPY5 for £5 and POPPY10 for £10.

Talks about building’s future

WELLS City Council is in talks with Somerset County Council about the possibility of buying the Portway Annexe.

Wells city councillor John Osman has been leading discussions with the county council and the community about the building’s future.

It follows the decision by education and training provider SS&L to close its centre in the Portway Annexe. The county council owns the freehold, and the asking price for it is likely to be £600,000 or more.

“I am working with local authority and community partners to keep the ownership of the building in public hands and to ensure that new community services are operated from the building,” said Cllr Osman.

“I hope that Somerset County Council will agree to sell the property to the Wells City Council and the community rather than a private developer.”

Its beginnings came from the foresight of the Blue School which built an annexe to accommodate the girls in the community. Support for school’s conservation work WELLS Blue School PTA (The Friends of the Blue Association Trust) has received £1,500 towards tree planting and conservation work at the school.

It is one of 19 smaller, grassroots charities and community groups to have been awarded grants in the latest round of The Somerset Fund, managed by Somerset Community Foundation.

Between them, they will share £20,911.

Blue School PTA co-chair Lorraine Millington said that the grant will be of great benefit to the school and its students: “Earlier in the year, before the pandemic, we asked the pupils what they felt was the most pressing current need of the time and conservation was number one. This passion was shared by both the pupils and the staff.

“There has been little in the way of enrichment activities off-site and outside of the school since lockdown, so we were delighted that the funding gave us the opportunity to work together and help us to redesign and refurbish the conservation area at the school.

“It was important to the pupils that we made sure the area is accessible to all. Our projects also include increasing biodiversity by planting beefriendly plants, climbers, more trees in the orchard fields, bird feeders, an installation of a clay pond, raised beds, and the refurbishment of the polytunnel.

The fruit from the existing fruit trees is often made into apple juice for the local care home for the elderly and the community centre for the homeless.

Blue School students at work in the conservation area lockdown this year, it has been good for the pupils’ mental health to be outdoors, and to take part in activities and projects where the emphasis is less academic.

“All of these improvements and activities make an enormous difference to the children’s opportunities.

“Due to the pandemic we’ve seen a significant loss in our usual fundraising this year, so we’re very grateful to Somerset Community Foundation for awarding this grant from The Somerset Fund.

“There are so many good things that will come out of this funding.”

Community shed reopens with new rules in place THE Wells Community Shed has reopened after being closed due to the Covid-19 virus.

New rules have been put in place and are being strictly followed by members who attend sessions at the shed, which is at the Heads Up site at South Horrington.

Steve Whitby, secretary of the committee that runs the shed, said that it had not been easy making sure that the shed is a safe environment for the members – but that they were pleased to be able to use it again.

“The shed is sterilised after every session and members have to wear face masks and gloves to minimise any risk of infection,” he said.

“Having the shed open again has been extremely well received by members, who have missed having social interaction enjoying the shed activities.

“As the shed’s revenues have been hard hit by the ‘lockdown’, we are focusing on making more of our own items and selling them to the public via various means. Typical items are bird

Sessions are limited to no more than six members, but a second session has been added every week, and there are plans to add more.

Community possibilities at Old Deanery THE Save the Old Deanery group hoping to ensure community involvement and community use of the building in the future have been encouraged by indications from the Diocese of Bath and Wells that this might be possible.

The Grade I listed Old Deanery on Cathedral Green is being marketed again with a guide price of £1.6 million.

The Save the Old Deanery group’s own offer for the building has not so far been accepted, but it could be that a private buyer purchases it, and allows community use of some areas.

There are more than 1,500 signatures of support for the Save the Old Deanery campaign urging public use of the building.

The group’s plans could include a nationally-important gallery space on the first floor, and restoring the Old Deanery’s unique 16th-century Turner Physic garden, with workshops and low-cost facilities for local

The CIC – which is in partnership with an awardwinning Bath-based property company, specialising in repurposing historic buildings for mixed community and commercial use – submitted an increased bid to the Diocese to purchase the freehold unconditionally.

In reaching their figure, they say, they have carefully factored in the planning risks as well as the considerable

further expenditure needed for restoration.

“It’s clearly a building crying out for a public role,” said Adrian and Paddy.

“With our partner from Bath, we have a fully costed plan.

While we feel our bid ought to be enough to secure the freehold, we hope that the Diocese and their private buyer will decide to forge a collaborative partnership with us and the community.

“We welcome public support to ensure that this exceptionally important opportunity for Wells will ‘reboot’ our social and economic fortunes.

“We must not let this slip through our fingers so that the building is lost to the public forever.”

A Diocese spokesperson said they had nothing to add to last month’s comment: “We are very pleased with the level of interest shown in the Old Deanery since it was returned to the market.”

Cancellation of Christmas Market THIS year’s Wells Christmas Market has been cancelled because of the ongoing health emergency.

Mendip District Council has called off the event for public safety reasons, and to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Last year the festive market attracted record numbers of traders to Wells – and the crowds to match. More than 130 stalls featured, offering a feast of food, drink and gift ideas.

Leader of Mendip District Council, Councillor Ros Wyke, said: “We have with much regret decided to cancel the

Christmas Market this year due to the tightening of restrictions by government, and the rising number of Covid cases in the county. We know this will be deeply disappointing to stall holders and the public, who so look forward to this special market event. However, public safety must come first.”

Cllr Wyke added: “We will of course continue to support all our Mendip stallholders with their regular weekday offer, and in other innovative ways too, such as hosting traders online through a virtual marketplace on the council’s website.”

Self-isolation grant for low paid A NEW £500 cash payment, intended to make it easier for people who can’t afford to selfisolate for up to 14 days, is now available to Mendip residents.

Mendip District Council will be administering the ‘Test and Trace Support Payment’ for its residents. Applications to the scheme have opened, and can be backdated from September 28 onwards, where qualifying conditions are met.

The support scheme is due

to run until Friday, January 31, 2021.

The legal duty to self-isolate came into force at the end of September for people who test positive for Covid-19, or are contacted by NHS Test and Trace. Up to four million lowpaid workers in England will be able to apply for the self-isolation grant.

Institutions given more than £560,000 in heritage funding THE Bishop’s Palace and Wells Cathedral are being given more than £560,000 between them from the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund.

The Bishop’s Palace will receive £364,900, while Wells Cathedral will get £201,300.

They are two of 445 heritage organisations across the country set to receive a financial boost to help them through the coronavirus pandemic thanks to the £1.57 billion fund.

Rosie Martin, chief executive of The Palace Trust, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to have received this vital funding.

After suffering catastrophic losses earlier in the year, we had serious concerns about our ability to keep the site open to the public.

“This funding means that we can continue to employ all of our staff and to make appropriate changes to ensure that they can work safely. In turn, this means that we will be able to keep this wonderful heritage site open to all to benefit from and enjoy. We hear that spending time at our site is contributing to people’s sense of wellbeing at this difficult time.”

The Dean of Wells, the Very Rev Dr John Davies, said: “We are thrilled to have received support from the Culture Recovery Fund. Since the pandemic began, we have faced huge challenges.

Palace hosting Talking Cafe THE Bishop’s Palace and Health Connections Mendip have teamed up to enable Wells’ Talking Cafe to take place at The Bishop’s Palace this autumn.

The Palace Trust – the charity that runs The Bishop’s Palace in Wells – has recently moved its work with community groups to the top of its agenda, and the collaboration with Health Connections Mendip is one of the initiatives recently started to enable this.

Sessions are being held weekly at The Bishop’s Table where the well-spaced outdoor seating and beautiful grounds lend themselves to creating a safe and relaxing atmosphere for the group to meet, with the added bonus that they can also enjoy a stroll through the gardens afterwards.

Fen Bagias, area lead at Health Connections Mendip, said: “We’re very grateful to The Bishop’s Palace for agreeing to host the Wells Talking Cafe within the grounds.

“There has been a Talking Cafe in Wells for five years – a space that provides vital support to local people, for example those managing complex health issues, people who are carers or those who are isolated in the community. It’s an opportunity for face-to-face connection and to find out about a wide range of services and projects in the local area.

“We’ve run two outdoor Talking Cafes at the Palace so far and will continue to do so as long as the weather and circumstances allow.”

Society’s donation keeps project on track

WITH so much time to work on the mosaic, Ruth AmesWhite has needed more of the tiles which she cuts to create the walkable map of Wells.

However, the group supporting the project has been unable to hold any fundraising events since lockdown and is unable to make plans for the foreseeable future.

Wells Civic Society has stepped in with a large donation which has enabled Ruth to buy more supplies of the tiles she needs as well as boxes to store the completed mosaic sections – which is a significant boost and allows her to continue building this unique piece of public art.

Chris Winter, the chair of the Civic Society, said: “We are very proud to be able to support this project as it will benefit the city in many ways: it will be an attraction in its own right but also inform and educate residents and visitors alike about the history of Wells. It also demonstrates the value of contemporary art amongst all our amazing medieval history.”

Gift Day being organised to help cover fall in income A GIFT Day is being organised for St Thomas’ Church, Wells, on Sunday, November 22.

Local people are being invited to give money to help this growing church to continue its various activities because Covid-19 restrictions have driven down its income and prevented most other forms of fundraising.

“Most churches are in a similar position,” said Dr Alan

Butt Philip, acting chair of the St Thomas’ Parochial Church Council.

“Our buildings were completely closed for over three months and, since July, we have had to limit the numbers coming into the church as well as many other outreach activities.

“As a result collections have fallen; our church hall lettings have all but evaporated;

weddings are postponed; and concerts have been cancelled. Yet we still have our bills to pay. It is all very sad.

“We need to secure our financial position in order to continue the church’s work and to start rebuilding our links with the wider community.”

A generous local benefactor has offered to match all donations St Thomas’ can secure

up to a total of £20,000. Letters are being sent out to those who have a connection with the church inviting them to make a contribution to the Gift Day and explaining the situation St Thomas’ finds itself in.

The church has also been without a priest-in-charge for over a year, but advertisements have recently been placed to fill the vacancy.

“At first the displays were random but colourful items. I have recently created The Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts collection.

“I am currently working on my Halloween display ensuring it is colourful, fun and not too scary for children to enjoy.”

The larger items can take two days or more to complete. For some, Helene follows a pattern, and others she designs herself.

She comes from a creative craft family. Her mother had always crafted (“Her embroidery is stunning, she knits, sews and pretty much turns her hand to anything,” said Helene), and grandparents and aunts were artists.

“As a crafter myself I dabble in several activities,” Helene said.

“I knit, sew, make cards, fuse glass jewellery in my kiln, wire work jewellery and basic sculptures, cross-stitch, latch hook rug making and make button pictures.”

While Helene’s crafting is primarily a hobby, she is happy to take commissions from friends and acquaintances for gifts.

Before Covid she volunteered at Heads Up, and has made several items for the charity to sell to raise money.

Ribbon cut to open online art exhibition

THE Very Rev Dr John Davies, Dean of Wells Cathedral, and Paddy O’Hagan, chair of Wells Art Contemporary (WAC), officially unveiled the WAC2020 exhibition at the Cathedral.

“The Cathedral and WAC are of a piece. We understand each other,” said the Dean. “We are here to bring peace to human hearts in a very troubled time.”

The physical exhibition of shortlisted works in this year’s open art competition cannot be held due to Covid-19 restrictions.

But a large screen in the South Transept has been installed to ensure that the exhibition can still be viewed by visitors to the Cathedral, and a ribbon draped across it was cut to mark the opening.

“The idea that cuttingedge contemporary art can resonate with the 850-year-old architecture of the Cathedral is such a powerful concept,” said Paddy.

“We felt compelled to ensure it continued in some form this year. Hopefully we will be back to displaying the actual art within the magnificent surrounds of the Cathedral for WAC2021.”

Samuel Powell attended the opening on behalf of the exhibition’s major local sponsor, Greenslade Taylor Hunt.

“It seems more important than ever to support the local community in which we work and live,” he said.

“The impact of the exhibition within the Cathedral last year was so impressive. We are delighted that the organisers

Think carefully this Halloween and bonfire night I WOULD like to start off by introducing myself. My name is Kayleigh 6583 and I am the newest member of the Wells neighbourhood policing team.

I joined the team back at the end of September and since then I have been doing regular high visibility patrols in and around the city. Within this time I feel I have started to get a good feel for the city and wonderful people within it.

You may have seen me patrolling the High Street and other streets in the surrounding area. If you do happen to see me out and about, feel free to stop and have a chat (socially distanced of course). I have a real passion for helping people and getting stuck into anything that is thrown my way and I hope to reflect this within the work that I do here in Wells.

Unfortunately, Covid-19 is still very much a part of our lives and due to the restrictions currently in place, I urge everyone to really think before they make arrangements this year. Here are some of the questions you should be asking yourself: n Am I keeping to the rule of 6? n If so, can I maintain social distancing within this group? n Do I have a face covering to wear when social distancing cannot be maintained? n Am I maintaining a good level of hand hygiene?

n Do I feel well? n Am I showing any symptoms/ signs of Covid-19?

If the answer to any of these questions is no then please think twice about going ahead with potential plans.

Please remember, these rules have not been put in place to spoil anyone’s fun, they have been designed to help prevent the spread of the virus and save lives.

Please also remember to be mindful and respectful of the older generation and the more vulnerable people within our community that may be shielding or struggling in these difficult times.

Don’t ever assume that you know how people are feeling as this may not always be apparent.

New recycling collections set to start THE new expanded Recycle More service is getting underway now for all households in and around Wells that have weekly recycling collections.

All homes involved will have had their extra Bright Blue bag delivered, and received a collections calendar with any day changes, plus a “what goes where” guide.

Anyone with a weekly recycling collection will be able to add these to what is collected: rigid household and food plastic pots, tubs and trays; beverage cartons/Tetra Paks; batteries and small electrical items.

Once Recycle More collections start, the Bright Blue Bag will be for plastic trays, tubs, pots and bottles (rinsed and squashed or nested, bottle tops on) plus all cans (rinsed and, if safe, crushed), empty aerosols, and aluminium foil.

Open day showcase for special garden A NEW book on some of Somerset’s most beguiling gardens was launched at a garden open day in Wells.

Stoberry House at Stoberry Park opened its six-acre garden on September 18 in support of the National Garden Scheme.

Members of the public were able to stroll around the garden created over the past 23 years by owners Frances and Tim Meeres Young, and enjoy the stunning views over Wells and across to Glastonbury Tor. Stoberry House is one of 20 gardens to feature in The Secret Gardens of Somerset, and author Abigail Willis and photographer Clive Boursnell were at Stoberry House throughout the day to talk about and sign copies of the book.

Other gardens featured in the book include The Bishop’s Palace, Milton Lodge gardens, Kilver Court and Hauser & Wirth Somerset.

“The sun shone which added to a lovely day for enjoying the garden at Stoberry for the launch of the book,” said Frances.

“We were thrilled that Stoberry garden is featured alongside so many well-known garden designers.”

Stoberry House offers vouchers for garden visits and teas. It has just launched a luxury Christmas cream tea menu, and with this will also be offering a voucher for a free garden entry to Stoberry garden to see the spring bulbs and the early summer flowers next year.

Palace set to bring some Christmas joy THE Bishop’s Palace is planning to bring some socially-distanced joy to the Christmas season with its annual festive celebrations throughout December.

Christmas at the Palace will take place from December 5-22, when the rooms of the medieval Palace building will each be festooned with decorations on a variety of themes, from medieval through to Victorian.

The Entrance Hall will be warmed by a roaring fire, and seasonal greenery and foliage from the Palace Gardens will be used to create adornments to complement the historic interiors.

Outside the Palace, the Gardens will also be dressing up for Christmas, with a winter woodland theme, and outdoor lighting and decorations in the formal gardens.

There will also be a Christmas-themed family trail

which will take visitors through the Palace and Gardens, leading to a traditional nativity scene at the end.

The free area opposite the Croquet Lawn will be taken over by the new Winter Woodland Outdoor Christmas Cafe. With festive music and German Market-inspired food and drink, people can get into the Christmas spirit with gluhwein, bratwurst, hot chocolate and more while admiring the decorations.

For younger visitors, a ticket can be bought to visit the socially distanced Father and Mother Christmas. They will be meeting children in the Palace on December 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20.

Each family will have a chance to meet Father and Mother Christmas, and, of course, receive a gift. Tickets for Father Christmas can be purchased online, and always sell out in advance.

Children’s book published WELLS resident Ross Young has been writing children’s poems and stories for the past 50 years – and is delighted that his first children’s book is available from October 29.

Billy Bear’s Flying Adventure is the first of a series of Billy Bear adventures.

Explaining why it has taken so long to reach the book stands, Ross said: “I wrote my first Billy adventure for my children in 1978 when they were seven and five. I was in hospital recovering from a back operation sustained playing rugby. They thoroughly enjoyed it and it inspired me to write more.

“Many friends suggested it ought to be published and I sought a suitable illustrator and for various reasons it took many years until I found one in Pete Davies. We gelled immediately and his illustrations are brilliant.

“Billy’s adventures are what I would call ‘traditional’ children’s stories aimed at three- to seven-year-olds where Billy has great ambitions and his friends all come together to help him achieve them. There are obstacles in the way but with their help, he overcomes them.

In addition, on Saturday, December 12, and Saturday, December 19, there will be costumed readings of Dickens’ seasonal classic, A Christmas Carol, performed by members of Wells Theatre Company, at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

The shows will last about an hour and will involve costumed actors bringing this timeless tale to life in a wholly unique way.

The performance is included with entrance to the Palace and Gardens but tickets are strictly limited and must be booked in advance.

Seventeen new Anglican deacons – priests in their first year of ministry – are pictured with Bishop Trevor Willmott before their ordinations at Wells Cathedral. Instead of ordaining all the new deacons at once, there were four socially distanced services spread across the weekend of September 26 and 27. Everyone had to be masked, and with family and friends unable to attend because of the limit on numbers, the services were streamed to Facebook. There were a further three services around Somerset to ordain 12 people as priests, and Bishop Ruth licensed a further ten lay people as Readers in a two services in the Chapel at the Bishop’s Palace in Wells.

Support to help with financial turmoil caused by coronavirus THE Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the nation’s health, but heading into autumn and winter, there is growing concern too about its effects on people’s jobs and finances.

Recent research by Citizens Advice shows that one in nine adults in the country have now fallen behind with their bills as a result of coronavirus.

That is why Citizens Advice Mendip and Mendip District Council are keen to raise awareness of the free services available to those who find themselves in difficulty. Seeking advice on problems at an early stage is key to getting on top of them. So, for example, for people who have lost their job or risk losing it when furlough ends in October, Citizens Advice can tell them about their employment rights, what benefits they may be entitled to and how to cope if they are not able to keep up with paying their bills.

When it comes to accommodation, it is better to find out early what the options are for people who are falling behind with the rent, mortgage payments or council tax. Citizens Advice and the housing options team at Mendip District Council are there to advise on what to do.

Ian Byworth, CEO of Citizens Advice Mendip, said: “These are tough times for many, as we have personally seen from the people getting in touch with us. Often, though, the hardest thing is accepting that they have a problem in the first place. But the sooner they recognise it and seek advice, the easier it is for us to help them find a way through it.”

THE loss of loved ones will be the focus of two events taking place at the start of November.

St Thomas’ Church, Wells, is holding a service in Remembrance of All Souls on Sunday, November 1, at 6.30pm.

At this service, the names of loved ones who have died will be read out if requested. People who would like someone remembered at this time should contact St Thomas’ Church office with the person’s name on office@ stthomaswells.co.uk or 01749 672335.

Those who would like to attend the service in church can book a place by emailing or telephoning the church office, or getting in touch through Facebook (St Thomas Church Wells). This service will be held in church and via Zoom. Anyone who would like the Zoom link should get in touch.

The following day, on Monday, November 2, there will be a Bereavement Cafe at the church from 2pm-3.30pm.

Anyone who at any time has suffered loss is welcome to call in and talk over a cup of tea.

Service provides chance to reflect ST Margaret’s Hospice Care is inviting the local community to come together to be part of a special Light up a Life remembrance event.

It is a chance to reflect on those loved and lost and to celebrate their lives.

The charity is also using the event to raise money at a time when income generation and fundraising has been deeply affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

This year’s Light up a Life event will be held online. The service will be filmed in the Bishop’s Chapel at The Bishop’s Palace, Wells, and streamed through the St Margaret’s website on Sunday, December 13, at 4pm. Supporters of the hospice will be receiving an invitation through the post with the opportunity to remember loved ones.

MUFFET MUFFET and LUNA are beautiful long haired sisters who are very good friends.

They are 6 1/2 years old and have been mostly house cats who ventured into a small garden, they will need a quiet home with NO children or other pets.

They are OK with being brushed and will need daily grooming. Muffett is a Brindle Tortie while Luna is a Grey Tortie. Luna is a little shy at first but soon comes

along for strokes and both like to headbutt hands or legs and are very inquisitive and want human contact.

We would like to home them together and in a quiet situation, with a garden where they can have some freedom to do what cats like to do. We would not be looking to home them as indoor only cats.

WELLS City Council would like the public’s support to help local wildlife flourish by providing additional food and habitat.

It is part of a make Wells a more Wildlife Friendly City initiative led by city councillor Joe Parker who said: “We can help achieve this by increasing the number of wildlife friendly trees.

“So on Saturday, October 31, there will be a Wells market stall dedicated to selling a variety of native woodland saplings for just £1 each. This amazing price also includes the option of free tubes and stakes if the saplings are being planted in places prone to grazing by deer.

“A mature native woodland tree in flower can provide a huge amount for food for pollinators and also other wildlife that eat the fruits and nuts produced.

Given that a mature tree can provide the same amount of nectar and pollen as over an acre of land with just flowers shows how important trees can be in providing extra food.

“Add the fact that a Hawthorn hedge or tree can support more than 300 species and it is easy to

see how important these types of trees are.”

The limited number of 20-60cm saplings includes the following varieties of trees: Blackthorn, Crab apple, Dog Rose, Goat Willow, Hazel, Hawthorn and Rowan. The idea to sell subsidised native woodland saplings on a not-for-profit basis was approved by Wells City Council earlier this year.

Newly appointed Mayor of Wells Philip Welch said: “It is good to see this exciting idea that Councillor Joe Parker presented a few months ago start at the ideal time to plant saplings and trees. This is a great opportunity to see if we can all help our local wildlife while also offering fantastic value to residents, clubs, and businesses in and around Wells.”

If the market stall on Saturday proves a success it is hoped that additional market days will be booked moving into the winter. The city council hopes that this idea becomes part of many other actions that can be taken to collectively make Wells a more Wildlife Friendly City.

From soldier to pioneering winemaker Tom Rees reviews a new book that recounts the amazing exploits of Wells resident Colin Gillespie, who once served in the SAS and went on to establish a vineyard at North Wootton OUR beautiful city of Wells is a magnet for visitors. It also attracts a host of older residents with fascinating back stories, among others artists, engineers, architects, soldiers, film-makers, wine-makers, diplomats. Colin Gillespie, who at the age of 95 has brought out a history of his life, falls into no fewer than three of these categories.

A Sapper who also served in the SAS and with the Parachute Brigade, his witty and selfdeprecating story is not just a personal and family saga.

Spanning the entire era from pre-war Britain to the present, it is also a reflection of the relatively civilised decline and fall of the largest empire in

Colin Gillespie’s memoirs make fascinating reading human history within a single lifetime. It is also a delightful and impressive account of his transformation, on leaving the army in his late forties, into arguably England’s foremost winemaker in the newly

emerging English wine industry in the 1970s and 1980s.

It says a lot about Britain’s disengagement from its former territories that although Colin Gillespie served for 27 years throughout that time and was posted in a dozen or more countries, including a spell on the front line in the Malayan jungle, he only came under fire when he was wearing a blue beret and commanding a peacekeeping unit in Cyprus.

But he did lead a party up Mt Kilimanjaro to set off a giant rocket display amid the snows to mark Tanzania’s Independence Day. He organised an airlift to rescue by helicopter a rare Bongo antelope (which the antelope did not, alas, long survive).

He learned at the Indian Staff College how much a transport elephant eats daily and how many elephants are needed to carry food for the elephants.

On his retirement Colin and

his wife Sue turned the small farm they owned at North Wootton into a vineyard. There was a revival of vine-growing in England at the time and the Gillespies were early pioneers, starting like most of them (including your reviewer) from a solid basis of ignorance.

Where Colin and Sue excelled was in their ability to learn, to organise, to take advice and to deliver wines which could be taken seriously. Prizes, medal and trophies followed, as did favourable publicity. Colin worked locally and nationally to raise standards. Help needed soon with extension to path Strawberry Line Association committee member Richard Jones provides an update on the Strawberry Line path IN late September, the planning application for the Dulcote Quarry Link, which will extend the Strawberry Line path from the Dulcote underpass on to the entrance of Dulcote Quarry, was finally approved.

This new path will have enormous utility value as it connects the city of Wells to one of Mendip’s biggest employment sites at Charlie Bigham’s Quarry Kitchen. As a woodland path, it will also create a beautiful recreational space, gifting path users with beautiful views of the Somerset Levels.

Support for the project has been entirely positive, with 64 public comments in support left on Mendip’s planning website.

In other news, Lidl plan to demolish the existing Travis Perkins store and erect a new supermarket right where Priory Road Station used to be.

Strawberry Line campaigners have lobbied for Lidl to put in place a crossing over Priory Road as part of any S106 obligations (at present, this road cannot be safely crossed) and to run a dedicated multi-user path along the north-eastern edge of the site.

This would form a crucial part of a projected route through the centre of Wells, connecting the Strawberry Line at the leisure centre with the Strawberry Line at the Sherston Inn (see map).

The outcome of this is uncertain at this stage, and largely depends on Somerset Highways’ approval of any road crossing proposals.

Town hall popular choice for weddings THE two most popular wedding venues in Somerset are Wells Town Hall and Orchardleigh stately home near Frome.

In normal times 50-60 weddings take place in the town hall, whose manager Kevin Westwood said: “People love the building, especially the Mayor’s Parlour where the ceremony can take place.”

But with Covid restrictions only 15 people are allowed at a wedding, including the photographer, registrar, town hall manager, bride and groom.

“Now couples think the situation will not ease in the short term and are looking to book their wedding ASAP,” said Kevin.

“We have a tentative booking for Christmas Eve.” The town hall, which was built in 1778 by public subscription to replace the former Market and Assize Hall in the centre of the Market Place,

Kevin went to Horrington and the Blue schools, then had his first job at the now demolished Clares Carlton factory behind the town hall.

Next he helped manage the industrial therapy unit of the Mendip Hospital at South Horrington.

“When the hospital closed I wanted to work somewhere which would protect my pension rights which the town hall would.”

His application was successful. That was 31 years ago and Kevin still loves working in the town hall.

“We are like a family here,” said Kevin. “The staff all look after each other and enjoy coming to work. Every day is different.”

IT’S November, and whereas most years I am one of those ‘Where on earth is the time going?’ sorts, this year, having spent the majority of it at home, I am satisfied that it is, indeed, time for autumn. This is a season when dramatic changes happen.

I don’t suppose many of us enjoy the rough wet weather, but we do get a lot of bounty from gardens and hedgerows! I have made jam for the first time this year and everyone has enjoyed the blackberries we have now had the time to pick.

It isn’t just the seasons that are changing, as they always do, but so many of our lives are being turned upside down by this pandemic. Who knew, even a year ago, that the word ‘Coronavirus’ would become so familiar? We are all having to face changing fortunes too. So many of us are having to cope with job losses and collapsing businesses. It’s hard, especially

The weather can be rough at this time of year but there are silver linings if you look for them – and that is true of business too when we may have spent years building up a business, to watch it start to disappear in front of our eyes, especially when we have worked hard and taken care to do everything correctly.

So, what can we do? In my view, the only thing we can do is to embrace the change. We can’t avoid it, so we may as well do our best to run with it. This situation is no-one’s fault, so let’s not adopt a blame culture, instead,

why don’t we start being really creative?

To begin with, I would now ask landlords with empty business premises to allow them to be used as pop-up shops and markets where possible.

I would suggest that those of us whose existing businesses are struggling due to Covid-19, start to think laterally. For instance, we know a successful events caterer who has set up

a pop-up restaurant; an events co-ordinator based in the capital has started an online business catering for women’s fitness and this is now growing steadily; and a number of businesses we know have changed from relying on physical shop premises to selling via the internet. Even our butcher has joined this group.

So, while this ain’t no bed of roses, neither is it the end of everything. If you have an idea and want time to chat it over with someone who can help, don’t hesitate to call on us. If you quote the Wells Coronavirus Network, you will have an extra half hour, on top of the usual free first hour, for a second, catch up meeting, so you can have time to think and come back with any questions you may have before launching out on your own.

Special event will protect Charter THE Covid-19 crisis has devastated the fairground industry with the twice-yearly Wells Charter Fairs of May and November being unable to open.

Under the rules and regulations of the Charters across Britain, if fairs do not appear, they are deemed to be gone forever. However, there is a clause that states the Charter will be protected and the fairs can return as long as a stall or an attraction is set up for a short period.

Such rare traditions as ‘Saving the Charter’ have happened this year in many cities and towns. Now it is the turn of Wells to hold such an event.

This legally binding act of safeguarding the Charter Fairs for Wells will take place at 11am on Friday, November 20, on the raised area outside Wells Town Hall. The Mayor of Wells, Councillor Philip Welch, accompanied by Town Clerk Steve Luck and Town Crier Len Sweales, will be there to support the fair operator for Wells, Shaun

Rogers, who is bringing his colourful toy set ride for children, while Richard Green, honorary member of the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain, will provide a special banner made for the occasion. The Town Crier will give a speech from the Town Hall balcony overlooking the symbolic presentation.

“If you are able, please come along and give your support to our living heritage traditions,” said Mr Green. “A wave and a thumbs up will be much appreciated.”

Wells City Council archivist Dr Julia Wood said: “Thank goodness Richard has come to the rescue. What would we do without him?”

Historically, it is necessary to go back to the two world wars, when Glastonbury-based showman Charles Heal set up a stall or two just to keep the Charter intact.

Shaun Rogers is the greatgreat-grandson of Charles Heal, so it is apt that he is keeping up this tradition.

IT will not have escaped anybody’s notice that the market for the buying and selling of houses is extraordinarily busy at the moment.

A number of reasons have been given, including people wanting to move into the country and pent-up energy after full lockdown. These may have had a small influence but I believe the driver here is the reduction of Stamp Duty Land Tax, which is due to end at the end of March 2021.

The effect of this is that there are savings for most, and, in particular, any purchaser of a property over £500,000 will inevitably save £15,000 which is not to be sniffed at.

The consequence has been that anybody who had any thoughts about selling or buying houses or flats in the next few months

or years is doing so now, to make a saving. The result is that the system is creaking.

We conveyancing lawyers are extraordinarily busy, which has not been helped, I would say, by the inevitable slight reduction in efficiency caused by people working from home.

Mortgages are taking longer, searches are taking longer, and surveys often take months to take place. This is all against the backdrop of people feverishly trying to do everything quickly because they are concerned about the upcoming deadline for the end of the concession.

We, as a firm, are keeping on top of things but only because of enormous efforts by everybody in the conveyancing department.

Important step in sustainable journey A NEW solar PV system has been installed at the Charlie Bigham’s food production site at Dulcote, near Wells, that will hugely reduce the amount of electricity it imports.

The food manufacturer requires electricity 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and now has a bespoke 318.58kWp solar PV system designed by Devon company SunGift Energy that will make its operations even more sustainable.

“Like most food producers, our operations are very energy intensive,” said Charlie Bigham.

“Our refrigerators are in constant use, keeping our freshly-made food at optimum temperatures. That’s why

will be used by our facility, with just 0.5 per cent being exported back to the grid.

“Since starting the business

my goal has always been for Bigham’s to become a 100 per cent sustainable company, so over the past 20 years we have continually introduced measures that improve our the way we operate. When we switched on our solar PV system I knew we had achieved an important next step in our journey.”

The 318.58 kWp solar PV system will produce around 314,000 kWh of electricity per year – enough to power the equivalent of 101 average houses and reduce carbon emissions by 163 tonnes each year. Thanks to the electricity that it generates, the system will take less than five years to generate enough savings to pay for itself.

Reward of £5,000 for missing dog’s return

By Paul Cannon A £5,000 reward has been offered for the return of a dog missing on the Mendips.

His owners, Judy and Peter Bowden – who run the Post Office stores in West Harptree – have already gone to considerable lengths to find him, including drone and thermal imaging sweeps of the area where he was last seen.

Missing cocker spaniel Bracken Bracken, a 10-year-old liver coloured cocker spaniel, was walking with Peter and four of the couple’s other dogs, in a remote area called The Garrow near East Harptree, on September 1. All five of the animals went off into a bushy area but Bracken didn’t return.

“We searched the area and I stayed there all night,” said Judy.

“We then left the car there with the boot open for nine days so Bracken would have somewhere to come back to. Since then I have been back there every day and night.”

She and Peter have posted details of the reward and pictures of Bracken at sites over a wide area, including Stockhill Woods near Wells. As well as drone and thermal sweeps they recruited a seven-person beating team to search the area where he was lost.

“I don’t think he has been stolen,” said Judy. “Something has happened. Something stopped him from coming back.”

She discounts the idea that he fell into one of the holes or disused mineshafts that are common in some parts of the Mendips as she doesn’t know of any in the area he disappeared.

The couple also look after rescued dogs along with four gundogs of their own who were with Bracken when he went missing. Anyone with information about him is asked to contact them via Buddy’s Rural Animal Rescue – www. brarrescue.co.uk

Funds handed to good causes OCTOBER 3’s Wells SOUP had to be cancelled following Covid restrictions but this fundraising lunch has managed to benefit four more charities.

This was made possible

by Lodestone Property who were happy to donate the £350 sponsorship they had offered this month’s fundraising lunch.

“Lodestone as always are delighted to support our local community and never more so than now when local charities are suffering,” said Cathy MorrisAdams, managing partner of the estate agents.

A further £50 was added by Wells SOUP so there was a total of £400 to give away with £100 each going to four charities in need because of the coronavirus crisis.

They are Wells Foodbank, the Little Theatre, Wells Coronavirus Network and the Wells branch of Macmillan Cancer.

SOUP is organised by Wells Independents whose Ross Young said: “Make no mistake, SOUP will be back during 2021 when many more charities will be added to the 64 we’ve helped so far.”

Charity walk raises over £2,000

Update given on climate actions

WELLS resident Paul James has completed his charity walk in Italy raising money for Winston’s Wish which supports bereaved children.

He headed out of Florence on October 1 and, 170 miles and two weeks later, arrived at his destination of Assisi, footsore but happy.

He said: “I’ve had a fantastic experience with plenty of ups and downs, literally. Some stages were really tough but I met some great people along the way and also at the hostels where I stayed.

They were really kind.

“I had hoped to raise £1,500 but the total is now over £2,000 which is amazing. All of it will go to a really worthy cause. I want to thank everyone who donated: friends, family and complete

MENDIP district councillors have been updated on the progress being made to address the district’s climate emergency commitments.

Councillor Tom Ronan, Portfolio Holder for Strategic Policy and Climate Change, set out some of the achievements at the Full Council meeting on September 30.

“Mendip is part of a Somerset-wide Climate Emergency Strategy and Action Plan. This Action Plan has now been completed and will be passing through all of the five Somerset council’s governance processes, starting this month,” he said.

New initiative at cafe will offer chance to chat and seek advice HEADS Up and Daniels Cafe are teaming up in an initiative that will offer a new safe space in the community at the cafe in Queen Street.

Launching on November 2, Cupcake and Company will be a fortnightly opportunity to chat, get advice – and have a delicious cupcake.

Bridget Harvey, service director of the mental health charity based at South Horrington, will be running the sessions at the cafe every other Monday from 10am until noon.

She said: “We are really excited to be able to offer this new initiative to the local community.

“We will be working with Health Connections to provide a place where people can share experiences and meet new friends, and gather information about what resources are available in Mendip. Daniels have been amazing to offer the use of their cafe in this way.”

All are welcome at the sessions, which are free to attend, and will be Covid-safe.

“People can attend for free, ask Bridget questions or look for advice, or have a bit of company and a cupcake. This will be Covid-friendly, a safe space and comfortable. We hope our collaboration with Heads Up will expand further down the line as Covid clears.”

Kate helped to raise funds for Heads Up and awareness of its work on October 10, World Mental Health Day. She set up a stall outside the Sage and Bumble gift shop in Market Street Courtyard and sold cupcakes and magnets made by people who use Heads Up. She also talked to the public about the charity’s services.

No crib festival or card shop TWO annual Christmas events at St Cuthbert’s Church have had to be cancelled this year.

It is not possible to run the charity Christmas card shop, but it is hoped that it will be back next year.

The popular Nativity Crib Festival cannot take place this year either. Organisers say that much of the joy of the festival is the warm atmosphere created by the many people flocking into the church to see the hundreds of crib scenes and enjoy Christmas refreshments, and it could not be the same this year with social distancing and the other restrictions.

They have reluctantly decided to cancel the festival this year, and look forward to Christmas 2021.

Help for music organisation THE International Music Exchange, Wells, is to receive £50,000 from the government’s Culture Recovery Fund.

It is one of 26 arts and culture organisations in Somerset being given a £4.2 million cash boost.

The International Music Exchange Ltd (TIME) specialises in the organisation and promotion of concerts, tours, festivals and exchanges across Europe for international youth and amateur orchestras, choirs, bands and ensembles.

Focus on health with Bluebird Care

Improve communication skills and you may improve quality of life

Children put together a Happiness Box

Children helping to spread happiness PRIMARY schools and care homes across Mendip have been busy creating special happiness boxes for each other thanks to a new initiative led by Make the Sunshine community interest company.

In the Wells area, Torrwood Nursing Home and Horrington Primary School have been paired together and are completing creative challenges to share with each other, delivered through specially created Happiness Boxes.

Challenges in the boxes range from writing a happiness recipe to making a happiness puppet.

In total, 12 primary schools and care homes are participating.

Louise Lappin-Cook, director of Make the Sunshine, said: “The Happiness Hunt is about finding creative ways to build social connection in a time when it has been so difficult for people to physically connect. Coronavirus has cut off many care home residents from friends and family and the outside world, and for many children it has seen them separated from grandparents,

friends and school – so we thought this would be a lovely way to bring people together.”

In Horrington Primary School’s box, Torrwood Care Home put a quote that read: “Be happy not because everything is good but because you see the good in everything.”

The project has been commissioned by Wassail Theatre Company as part of their Somerset Emergency Theatre response, with funding from the Arts Council and Somerset Community Foundation. The project has also been supported

by Wells Festival of Literature which has funded some artists videos to be shared as part of the project. Videos include Paddleboat theatre ‘Making a Happiness Cake’ Great British Bake-Off style, and artist Claire Evans ‘Making a Paper Doll’ of her former teacher.

Sue Rye from Wells Festival of Literature Education team said: “We’re delighted to support a project that links schools and care homes in such a fun and innovative way.”

Communication Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place to another. The desired outcome or goal of any communication process is understanding. This is a simple definition, but when we think about how we may communicate the subject becomes a lot more complex. There are various categories of communication and more than one may occur at any time.

Communicating helps people to express their ideas and feelings, and it, at the same time, helps us to understand emotion and thoughts of the others.

As a result, we will develop affection or hatred toward other people, and positive or negative relationships will be created.

Each and every one of us are unique and therefore communicate in a way in which we will understand.

It is important whilst communicating to confirm and clarify, as not fully understanding the conversation can lead to confusion and poor

decisions being made. You can clarify the communicated message by asking how? Why? Who? What? Or when?

Confirming and clarifying will support effective communication which is also linked to the skill of active listening. Show you are listening, taking an interest and not over speaking or speaking for someone.

Speaking for over someone could result in conversations where you are making assumptions and guessing leaving the individual to feel their opinions and feelings are ignored or patronised.

Someone who feels their communication is not being respected may withdraw from communication leading to feeling low in self-worth, so take the time to respect and listen to others.

It’s never too late to work on your communication skills and by doing so, you may feel that you improve your quality of life.

Dr Boyd’s hat helped protect patients from injury DURING research for a major exhibition to be held at Wells and Mendip Museum postCovid in conjunction with the Friends of the Mendip Hospital Cemetery on the staff and patients of the Somerset and Bath County Lunatic Asylum, it has been discovered that Dr Robert Boyd, the then pioneering medical superintendent of the hospital, developed a novel way of protecting epileptic patients from damaging their heads whilst fitting.

The practice of selling a wife, although not strictly legal, was quite common in the 1700s.

Three of the reported cases were in Somerset, one of them in the village of Wookey.

Hereford Journal January 11, 1787 “Two brothers by the name of Stott, who live at Wookey near the City of Wells, being equally captivated with the charms of a female of Wells, daughter of one Lovell, a mason, paid their address to her.

When the elder brother perceiving that she manifested a partiality for the younger brother, declared that unless

she would accept his hand at the altar of hymen, he would hang himself. The tender-hearted nymph to prevent so melancholy a catastrophe promised to gratify his wishes and they were accordingly married.

However the parties found themselves so much deceived in each other that on the Saturday last the husband actually sold his wife (with her own approbation) for half a crown to his brother to whom that evening he delivered her, with a halter around her neck, in the presence of a large party at a local public house where the purchase money contributed towards the expenses of a convivial evening.”

This account was also reported in Norfolk Chronicle, Chelmsford Chronicle and Leeds Intelligencer amongst others.

law of any legal right to be able to sell a wife but it was often seen among the humbler classes in rural England. Wife-selling was an alternative means of ending a marriage and seen as a method of dissolving a marriage and the sale released the husband from his marital duties including any financial responsibility for his wife.

Records of wives resisting their sale are non-existent and for many women it was the way out of an unhappy marriage.

Between 1780 and 1850 around 300 wives were reported in contemporary newspapers as having been sold. Most of the wives went to sale or auction of her own volition and she held a veto over to whom she was sold.

In 1766, “John Parsons, a cloth worker in the County of Somerset, did sell to John Tooker for the sum of six pounds

and six shillings in hand, Ann Parsons the wife of the said John Parsons.”

In many cases the sale was announced in the local newspaper or by the Town Crier.

In October 1858 the Western Mail reports that: “A woman was sold last Friday in the Market Place in Shepton Mallet for five shillings. The husband led his wife into the Market Place with a halter around her neck. The first bidding was 2s 6d but she was eventually knocked down for 5s. After the sale the purchaser adjourned with his prize to a neighbouring public house where they availed themselves of a good substantial dinner. The former husband experienced some rough treatment from the lookers on.”

The last reported instance of wife-selling was in Leeds in 1913 when a man sold his wife to one of his workmates for £1.

Famous figure seen in old photograph WELLS and Mendip Museum have spent time during the Covid pandemic putting regular images on their Instagram and Facebook pages to share some of their collections and archives and to keep the museum in the consciousness of the city and beyond to enable its survival and to share the work and research that goes on daily behind the scenes.

Occasionally a gem is discovered that is almost a “Eureka” moment, as in the case of this photograph from the Phillip’s Collection.

On closer inspection the tall gentleman in the foreground of this photograph taken by TW Phillips, father of Bert Phillips, reveals his identity through his stature, grace and long beard.

For those with a cricketing bent the figure becomes easily identifiable as being that of William Gilbert Grace, the famous England cricketer.

Further research in conjunction with the

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club Heritage Centre, which holds an extensive WG Grace archive, has confirmed that it is indeed the great man in a photograph, a faded copy of which Roger Gibbons the archivist at Gloucestershire had seen, but he said that he had never seen the original or one of the quality of the museum’s picture.

It was taken either at Fenny Castle or Rowley Farm at Butleigh Wootton, near Glastonbury, two visits which are documented when WG Grace came to Somerset with the Clifton Foot Beagles, of which he was a member. The date appears to be between 1895 to 1898 as WG Grace moved to London thereafter and his visits back to his home city of Bristol were very few.

Roger Gibbons believes it to be a previously unpublished photograph which will now add to the much-documented life and times of the great man.

ARTIST Caryn Peiffer has had an enthusiastic response to her ‘City of Walls’ series of imaginary murals on buildings around Wells.

Wells Voice reported last month that Caryn had used digital illustration and photography to create images of murals on small businesses and notable buildings in the city. She has been sharing the images online, and the featured businesses have put posters of their mural in their windows.

“The series has been really well received,” said Caryn “When I created the series, I only hoped that it would bring a playful energy to Wells and a bit of a pick-me-up for the featured shop owners. Covid has been hard on everyone, and small business owners have obviously had it really tough. I am proud of how it turned out – I think the series has achieved what it set out to do.”

Pleasing to see organisations given grants OVER the past couple of weeks as I write this, it has been extremely pleasing to see a number of organisations in Wells handed grants as part of the £1.57 billion investment to save arts and culture after what has been the most tumultuous year.

There is so much fantastic culture across Somerset and I know how important these places are to all of us who live here.

I hope this kick-starter fund will enable them to prepare for the future as one of the biggest challenges has been the uncertainty surrounding this whole situation.

Torr Works will play a massive part in the project and this will provide huge opportunities for those living in Shepton and the surrounding area. I will, of course, be engaging with them going forward regarding this opportunity for my constituents as I want to see this opportunity benefit those who live and work in the area.

It is important to also note that while the headlines have been rightly dominated by the impact of coronavirus and the rise in cases, that we are still in the medium risk category here in Somerset.

We can ensure this remains the case by continuing to comply with social distancing regulations, the rule of six and being mindful of our social interactions.

Councils’ cases for change due soon RIVAL business cases for the future of local government in Somerset should be submitted to the Government by November 9.

The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Robert Jenrick, has written to council leaders in Somerset inviting them to submit their case for change by that date.

Somerset County Council wants the county council and four district councils to be replaced with One Somerset – a single unitary council.

Mendip District Council, Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset West & Taunton Council, and South Somerset District Council are arguing for two unitary authorities with their Stronger Somerset proposal, which would see Mendip linking with South Somerset and Sedgemoor joining up with Somerset West & Taunton.

They have submitted their draft proposal to Government to keep key ministers up to date with their plans, and briefed decision makers in Westminster including Mr Jenrick.

In a joint statement, the Leaders of the district councils said: “We are delighted to be able to share our exciting vision of the future with ministers.

“Stronger Somerset is the only option to create a real solution to the challenges we face across the county. With 25 per cent of our children living in poverty, with services for our young people with special needs failing, with communities feeling left behind and disconnected we can’t afford to keep things the way they are.

“Our vision for the future will create a Somerset where we can invest in our diverse and brilliant towns, city and villages and truly make a difference.”

Councillor David Fothergill, Leader of Somerset County Council, said he was delighted that the Secretary of State has invited the council to submit the One Somerset business case.

“I have long campaigned for a single unitary approach for our county which will reduce duplication, deliver significant savings and most importantly improve lives for residents in our county,” he said.

“From investing in climate change to reducing inequalities, we are convinced a single unitary approach is the right way forward. Our proposal ticks all the boxes for the Government’s tests and we are confident we have a compelling case to put before the Secretary of State.”

Charity delighted with donation A WELLS charity has received a much-needed financial boost.

The Lawrence Centre supports older people with dementia and other health issues but has seen costs rise and income fall because of coronavirus restrictions.

“We are spending an extra £200 a week,” said its manager Maggie Charlesworth, “because we need more staff as well as paying for PPE and more cleaning.

“Meanwhile we are unable to support as many vulnerable people because of social distancing.

“So we are absolutely delighted and can’t thank the Wells Lions enough for donating £600. You have made our day.”

The Lions themselves have been unable to fundraise since lockdown as events they planned were cancelled, but they still had some money from last year.

Their president Rod Major said: “We have always supported The Lawrence Centre. They provide a wonderful service and we knew they needed help in these difficult times.”

Mr Major is a funeral director in Wells.

PEOPLE are being encouraged to plant some spring bulbs to help hungry bees and other pollinating insects next year.

Mendip District Council is launching a ‘Plant for Pollinators’ guide as part of its plan to deliver on its climate and ecological commitment and help local communities make environmentally friendly decisions.

Planting bulbs this autumn will create ‘nectar cafes’ for the insects when they wake up after the winter. Suggestions for bulbs include Alliums, Camassia, Chionodoxa, Crocus, Iris, Snakes head fritillary and Bluebells.

Councillor Tom Ronan, a Wells district councillor and Portfolio Holder for Strategic

Policy and Climate Change, said: “In this project we want people to help us protect local ecosystems by planting bulbs.

“It will help the Mendip district bloom beautifully next spring, provide a vital food source for breeding pollinators and lift all our spirits after the winter.

“Everything we are doing is about improving the lives of local people and their environment as much as we can.”

Since the last century pollinators have been in decline throughout the UK, with loss of habitat due to land use change, modern agricultural practices – including use of pesticides – and climate change thought to be the main causes.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS CIVIC SOCIETY WELLS Civic Society committee, which met by Zoom recently, is in total agreement that an ‘actual’ meeting of members is, sadly, out of the question for the time being. Therefore the 2020 AGM, scheduled for November 11, will also be held on Zoom.

“We continue to support several projects, including Wells in Bloom, the Neighbourhood Plan and Wells in Mosaic, as well as the museum for its post lockdown reopening and portrait exhibition.

“Planning matters have always been something we rigorously follow and respond to, and we are also making plans for a number of plaques to add to those which already mark and commemorate the history and architecture of the city.”

WELLS FLORAL ART CLUB WELLS Floral Art Club began in 1953 and each Christmas since then we have held an open meeting to celebrate this special time with flowers. 2020 will be remembered for being the year when all our lives changed and we won’t able to welcome our friends and families to this happy occasion. People could look on the internet instead for inspiration for Christmas arrangements under Covid-19 rules to plan the General Meeting which will now take place when restrictions are lifted. They hope to be able to welcome members and guests to enjoy an afternoon of flower arranging in April 2021. Our new website will confirm the details.

Although we missed our outing to Salisbury Cathedral in September, we can look forward to the Flower Festival at Winchester Cathedral in 2021.

It was agreed at the committee meeting to keep the same charity, The Macular Society, in place for 2021 subject to the members’ approval. Look out for details for a special fundraising event next year.

Jenny Jones WELLS WI WELLS WI celebrated its 10th birthday this month. Current restrictions ruled out the party that had been planned. Instead members received in the post an invitation to attend an online celebration, along with a teabag and cocktail stick so people could make their drink of choice, and a ready cut out kit to make our own buttonholes to wear.

Members short of time or craft skills just wore a big hat. A record 35 members took part.

Our appearance amused our guest speaker, Mark Pogson, a local teacher who joined us online to lead us through a gentle session of Qi Gong, a Chinese exercise related to Tai Chi and Shiatsu Japanese acupressure

massage. As Mark promised, the exercise warmed us up from the inside out, stimulating circulation and organ function to improve health and mood.

Our president, Anne, thanked those who had been organising events like online book groups and socially distanced coffee mornings at The Bishop’s Palace, and told us that the first attempt to make use of our monthly room booking had worked well with a small group of up to six members meeting to do a craft activity.

We finished by sharing memories and photos of ten years of Wells WI. Some of the original members told us about the very first meeting at Wells Town Hall. Advertised as “sex, drugs, rock and roll and jam”, it attracted 120 women, to the surprise of the organiser who had brought along a single tin of Quality Street.

Our secretary said she knew she had joined a fun group when the first meeting she attended featured Laughing Yoga.

Memorable meetings included Greek dancing; a beautiful clear autumn evening spent lying on blankets on Cathedral Green stargazing with astronomers; all the many things we’ve made together from Christmas wreaths to greetings cards, candles and bath bombs; and the ways in which we have been able to support charities.

Former president Jane told us that the appeal to raise funds for a new breast cancer unit at Yeovil Hospital is in danger of stalling quite close to reaching target, and that some women have started making new jewellery from unwanted and broken items for sale to boost the appeal’s funds. She offered to collect any unloved and unworn items of jewellery suitable for upcycling, which she will pass on.

Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) AS bleak autumn turns into bleak winter it is easy to become pessimistic about the outlook ahead. So in a spirit of optimism it is time to take one or two

positive steps to give us cheer.

However small our garden plots or even pots we can usually make a couple of blades of grass grow. Basically it just amounts to putting the thing into the soil and letting Nature take its course. We can forget about the politicians for the moment and though Dean Swift had farmers in mind, they are gardeners on a grander and more commercial scale.

We horticultural potterers are not competing with agriculture.

So here are a few suggestions for consideration, suggestions which are not necessarily flippant.

First, there is always a favourite geranium hanging about in a neglected corner still remarkably resilient in the teeth of the weather. It is crying out for attention. So, dig it up, repot into a smaller vessel and, with a bit of tidy pruning, it can take its place on a windowsill where it will reward you continuously until late spring.

Secondly, buy a bulb or two.

Simply plant in compost in a pot, place on doorstep and let things happen. Hyacinths are wonderful, narcissi never fail to lift the spirits and tulips can be planted up to Christmas and even after.

Thirdly, buy a cactus. This is a fun thing to do and not always the preserve of children. Cacti are Nature’s joke plants, they always make you smile or wince if you get too close. But they need little fuss to keep them going.

Lastly, what about a garden gnome? There is nothing wrong with a garden gnome; better than a flimsily clad concrete Roman goddess trying to look coy in an unbecoming posture in a freezing wind and covered in lichen.

It has never been more important to have something to smile about. Since normal service will not be resumed for a long time yet, we need to do different things to cheer ourselves up. So, have fun in the garden and enjoy all aspects of it.

n NEWS IN BRIEF Plans for reopening of pub put on hold PLANS to reopen the King’s Head in Wells Hight Street have been put on hold.

Work started in March on a £560,000 refurbishment but it has been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

A Star Pubs & Bars spokesperson said: “For the moment the plans are on hold due to Covid. The earliest it would open would be April/May next year as it has no outdoor space.”

Train name honour CARE home manager Christopher Dando is to have a train named after him.

Christopher helped to ensure the safety of the 23 residents at Court House Retirement Home in Cheddar by shutting himself in with a team of carers – which included Donna Marke from Wells.

Now Christopher has been chosen along with fundraising postie Evette Chapman as BBC Make a Difference Superstars.

The pair were selected by judges following a link-up between the BBC and train operator GWR to celebrate those

Building meant lot to group’s members JOHN Osman should be thanked by the community for bringing to our attention the closing of the Somerset Skills and Learning (SS&L) building.

He stresses his concern for the loss of adult education provision and training opportunities in the area. It is a vital resource to other members of the community who also make use of the building.

Our group, the Society of Disabled Artists (SODA), were not informed of the closure until mid-September when we were asked to remove our group’s equipment from the room we used.

SODA has been using this facility for the past 20 years and as it’s one of only a few disabled accessible buildings in Wells, we will find it hard to replace it.

SODA may only be a small group using a short period within the SS&L’s schedule, but it meant a lot to the group’s members.

A massive loss, not only of the space we created art in, but the fact that this art was exhibited to the wider community.

The Cathedral, museum and The Bishop’s Palace have all shown our work in the past.

This has given our members an enormous boast to their confidence and allowed them the opportunity to sell their artwork.

The importance of the exhibitions were to showcase the artwork, to enhance people’s awareness of the talents of disabled artists and to advertise our group’s existence.

The use of this space will impact heavily on the lives of our

group’s members until we find a new place to work out of.

Repairer fixed radio and microwave A LINE to add to praise for Julie Wright, organiser of the Wells Repair Cafe, which although closed at the moment is still able to help with her network of local fixers. I contacted Julie last month to see if our ancient Sony radio could be repaired so that my wife could tune in to the long wave cricket commentary, a particular pleasure during the summer months. Julie put us in touch with Tony Penny who not only fixed the radio but fixed a fault on our microwave too.

Angels inspiring girls’ enjoyment of game RUGBY THE Wells Angels have been an integral part of Wells Rugby Football Club since they were first established in 2012. Over the years, their successes and achievements have been continuously growing. Indeed, the team manager for the U15s, Allie White, is proud to say that last season, the U13s ended almost unbeaten with a full squad.

Maisie, who has been a rugby player for Wells RFC since she was in Year 7, explains that the club is a place where “you can be who you want to be, you don’t have to be a certain type of girl”.

Alix, who joined rugby less than a year ago, says that despite her lack of experience in the sport, she felt very welcomed by the team members, and the friendly supportive atmosphere was the reason for her to carry on. The girls describe the ‘rugby spirit’ as different to any other women’s sport. In fact, in Allie White’s eyes, “the Wells Angels have a reputation for playing a strong, fair game”. She adds that “the girls show great respect for each other, their opponents and the game itself”.

According to Maisie, who now plays for the U18s, the training sessions have not changed dramatically since the pandemic kicked off. However, the girls now play touch rugby as opposed to full contact and are encouraged to sanitise

equipment as often as possible.

Although matches have officially been called off, some clubs in the area are playing a revised version of rugby with no contact called ‘Ready for Rugby’. The Wells Angels are hoping to participate in these fixtures soon.

Overall, the Wells Angels are a very welcoming rugby team where anyone who wishes to join can be assured “they will be part of a team which becomes like family”.

Local play sessions for youngsters quickly prove popular RUGBY FATHER of two Gareth Turnbull has been giving children in Wells their first taste of rugby with Rugbytots Somerset sessions at Wells RFC. Rugbytots is a toddler play programme providing girls and boys from two to seven years old with the opportunity to get involved in a structured team sport. In the 12 months since Gareth established it, Rugbytots Somerset has become the best performing franchise in the whole of the UK. “Rugbytots Somerset has

been successful because we care so deeply about our opportunity to work with children of all abilities and backgrounds,” he said.

“We owe it to all of these amazing children to make a lasting impression and give them the very best possible experience. GOLF IT has been a busy time at Mendip Golf Club. Forty-three Mendip Ladies played in the Qualifying Stableford event, 42 of whom found the strong northerly wind difficult to compete with.

The exception was the just turned 15-year-old Ellen Reakes who scored an outstanding 40 points to win Silver Division.

Ellen has recently been selected

by England Golf to undergo training with the South West U18 Team, and has reduced her handicap this year to 3.7.

One hundred and twenty men competed in the four-person Centenary Trophy event with the outcome being a win for Greenkeeper and Scratch golfer Tom Small ably supported by Stuart Crane, Tom Webb and Cameron Goudie, who scored 90 points.

One hundred and four players competed in Mendip’s Senior Mixed Open Bowmaker event. Lovely playing conditions resulted in some very good scoring with the visiting teams by and large outperforming the home players. Best Mendip pairing were Bryan Lewis and Penny Oliver with 39.

The club held the annual running of the Jim Jeffrey Putter with 121 men competing.

Division 3 went to S Crane with a net 68, Division 2 went to Phil Butcher with 70, and Division 1 went to Matt Bendall with 70.

However the Trophy winner was five-handicapper Jordan Vaughan with an excellent 67.

The Millington Salver event is now a Mixed 4bbb. A very good entry of 27 pairs took part.

Winning with 42 points after count back were Keith Gadsden and Jinhee Page, with Bryan Lewis and Penny Oliver second.

Mendip Senior Ian Tinsley achieved his first hole in one on the 12th hole after 60 years of trying. As the proverb says, “all things come to those who wait”.

A great sight for Mendip’s Members is the progress being made with the two new holes that will become the new 17th and 18th. The greens and tees are showing good grass growth and the recently seeded fairways are beginning to show colour as the grass germinates.

The Trials and Tribulations of the Vicars Choral will be revealed in a concert on November 12

Vicars Choral to tell their own story THE Vicars Choral of Wells Cathedral Choir will delve into their own history for this year’s Annual Commemoration Concert.

The Vicars Choral were established in 1348 by the then-Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury, who also built Vicars Close for them to curb their misdeeds when mingling with the townsfolk. Every year in November, in honour of Bishop Ralph, the Vicars Choral host a commemoration concert celebrating their extraordinary past and foundations.

This year they have decided that it is time to tell their own story, the Trials and Tribulations of the Vicars Choral, an evening of music and readings that journeys from the pre-medieval to the post-modern.

The concert will take place in Wells Cathedral Nave on Thursday, November 12, at 8pm.

Christmas panto with unique twist THE Bishop’s Palace in Wells is keeping a Christmas tradition alive this year as they welcome a Christmas pantomime with a twist to their programme of events. The audience gets to determine key elements of the show such as the characters, the setting, and the celebrity guests – and the actors will create a once in a lifetime, completely unique show.
