Giant mosaic will be homage to Wells THE history and architecture of Wells will be the inspiration for artist Ruth Ames-White to create a walkable mosaic map of the city centre that is set to become a landmark in its own right.

The giant mosaic will have a diameter of six metres, will be made from an estimated 750,000 tiles, and will take more than three years to complete.

Mendip District Council has given permission for the mosaic to be sited near the bandstand in the Recreation Ground, and fundraising for the Wells in Mosaic project, which is expected to cost in the region of £80,000, has now begun.

The group behind the project include Chris Winter and Philip Welch of Wells Civic Society, Steve Wilson of The Square soft play centre and Steve McKay of Jaypeg design and marketing agency, as well as Ruth and her husband Ian. “Steve Wilson came up with the idea of a walkable mosaic map and I think it’s wonderful.

To be given the task of designing and creating it is a huge privilege and one I hope I will do justice to,” said Ruth, an artist all her life who became hooked on mosaics after trying them when her youngest son started school 14 years ago.

“I have to look no further than Wells itself for my inspiration,” she added, “stunning architecture, beautiful surroundings and a well documented long and colourful history.”

Ruth will construct the mosaic in her home studio, a process that will involve cutting 2cm tiles by hand into pieces and sticking them on to paper designs. The completed segments will eventually be reassembled on the site.

“It’s going to be really unique,” said Ian. “We’re hoping it will bring more people to

The couple gave a presentation on the project at the latest meeting of Wells Civic Society, when society chair Chris Winter handed over a generous cheque for £5,000 so that work can begin.

“The civic society has been very enthusiastic in its support for this wonderful public art project since its inception and through the necessary planning and design phases,” said Chris.

“I am now delighted to be able to make this contribution on behalf of our members towards the next stage.”

Dodgems back by public demand THE dodgems will return to Wells for this year’s May Charter Fair due to public demand.

The 817th fair takes place in the Market Place on Friday, May 4, and Saturday, May 5.

In keeping with the policy for a modern family fair, a traditional set of dodgems with a history dating back 70 years to 1948 will be the main focal point The event is organised by Wells City Council and operated

WELLS City Council’s Finance & General Purposes Committee has agreed to give £2,200 for the year 2018/19 towards the costs of the 67 bus service between Wells, Wedmore and Burnham-on-Sea. The funding contribution was agreed at its meeting on April 12, when councillors also agreed to give £500 towards a children’s theatre performance at Wells Theatre Festival, and up to £800 from the hospitality budget towards accommodation costs for the carnival weekend visit of the

mayor of Paray le Monial and his family. The committee decided not to grant the £380 requested

by Wells Lions for musical entertainment at the May Fair having noted that a grant had been awarded the previous year.

Members approved a further extension of six months on the lease requested by the Post Office for its Market Place premises, and the use of the Town Hall for the Wake Up Wells community stakeholder conference on October 7.

Car parking review brings suggestion to move skate park WELLS Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has suggested that the skate park near Waitrose be moved to Wells Recreation Ground to create room for more parking spaces.

It would also like to see the provision of a park and ride scheme at peak times and cycle parks to encourage the use of bicycles in Wells.

The chamber’s comments come in response to Mendip District Council’s draft car park strategy for the district for 20182022, which has been circulated to key stakeholders such as town councils and chambers of commerce for their comments before it is considered by the council’s Cabinet on May 21.

There are six district councilowned car parks in Wells providing 381 spaces, and council data shows that there are no surplus spaces at peak periods.

The price of a parking permit in the Tucker Street car park is proposed to be increased from £270 to £372, phased in over three or four years.

Wells county councillor Tessa Munt criticised the proposed increases. She said: “I’m really concerned that the administration at Mendip hasn’t set out a strategy at all, it has written a report to justify hiking its car parking charges. If car parking costs rise, our residential roads will become more choked with cars, then shops and businesses will suffer as people go elsewhere where parking is cheaper or free.”

The chamber is also keen to see the fees waived for coaches that park at the coach station, which amounted to £700 in 2017.

“Wells Chamber of Commerce and Tourism would like to see coach parking free of charge to encourage the use of the coach station, prevent on-street parking and increase the time passengers spend in Wells,” it says.

“There would be significant economic benefit across the whole year if coaches were encouraged to stay longer which would greatly outweigh the loss of £700 revenue from the coach station. Coach drivers are often keen to minimise the time spent in Wells because they are offered free parking at Clarks Village.”

There was some discussion of the car park review at a Wells City Council planning committee meeting on April 19. Committee members agreed that at the next

full council meeting on April 26, the chairman would invite members to contribute their views. The council’s response will then be drawn up at the planning meeting on May 3.

Mendip District Council said in statement: “The ‘draft’ Car Park Strategy 2018-2022 looks at ensuring the long term sustainability for the car parks in the district. This four-year strategic review not only looks at parking charges but the much wider picture. We expect people to understand that both financial necessities are important and there are challenges around available parking in the best places.

“A detailed car parking charges review forms just part of this strategy and has been informed by looking at the utilisation of each car park, levels of occupancy at peak times, comparisons across neighbouring authorities and taking in to account the need for revenue to support the required investment in parking services for the future.”

Maypole dancing and music at annual bank holiday May Fair THE annual May Fair, one of the best-loved spring outdoor events in Wells, will be held again on Bank Holiday Monday, May 7, in the city’s historic Market Place.

It is being staged by Wells Lions as a community event and to raise vital funds for local charities and good causes. At its heart will be the traditional dancing around Somerset’s tallest maypole, performed by children from two Wells primary schools.

The free event attracts thousands of people, to watch the dancing, visit the food, craft and charity stalls, enjoy the rides and slides, and be entertained by musical performers. It starts at 10am and continues until 4pm.

The Market Place will be closed to traffic for the entire day.

The maypole dancing will take place at about 2pm, when the schoolchildren will parade in costume from the Town Hall, led

by Town Crier Len Sweales and accompanied by Wells Mayor John North and MP James Heappey.

Immediately before that, local dancer Tina Blackwill will demonstrate her baton-twirling skills and then invite people to join her for a free lesson, when the maypole dancing has ended.

Either side of the maypole dancing, Wells City Band will perform two sets, and the day’s entertainment will start at 10am with an invitation workshop of Djembe drumming, with expert

A HOUSE in Woodbury Avenue, Wells, was badly damaged when a fire broke out in the early hours. Police evacuated neighbouring properties while firefighters from Wells and Shepton Mallet tackled the blaze.

A female occupant suffering from smoke inhalation was checked by an ambulance crew.

The fire service reported that the fire, on April 8, started in a ground floor cupboard involving electrics, and that there was 30 per cent fire and 100 per cent smoke damage to the ground floor and 50 per cent smoke damage to the second floor.

The cause of the fire was accidental.

WELLS Police Station on Glastonbury Road is likely to be closed and a police station opened in a new location as part of a review of buildings being carried out by Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

“In our Estates Strategy we announced we were reviewing our buildings across the force and explained we would be looking for a new site for Wells Police Station in the future,” said Dave Harley, head of estates.

“We are currently looking at options for a new police station but have not yet made any decisions. Once a new police station has been found, we will announce this.”

Auctioneers in search for new premises AUCTIONEERS Allen and Sarah Mechen are searching for new premises after the closure of their McCubbing & Redfern auction rooms in Southover, Wells.

Plans have been submitted by site owner Andrew Davies to build two new homes there, which has left the couple looking for another business location.

“We haven’t been able to find alternative premises yet but we’re happy to have a break over the summer while we look for alternatives,” said Sarah.

“The only time we ever close the auction rooms is over the Christmas period.”

Another reason that a break is welcome is because of Allen having a heart operation.

He and Sarah have run the McCubbing & Redfern auction rooms for more than 12 years.

They originally opened up the first auction rooms in the centre of Yeovil, then ran Yeovil and Wells together until deciding to

The Wells site was formerly owned by the Wicks family of T Wicks & Sons who began the auction business in Wells in 1845.

Sarah said that she and Allen, who have been busy clearing out after their final sale at the end of March, would like to keep their auction rooms operation in Wells.

They have identified two premises in the city that would be suitable, though neither are available yet.

She added that their

customers are keen for them to stay. She said: “Our customers have been pretty upset as it’s the only family-run and independent auction house in the Wells/ Shepton Mallet area and they are hoping we will return.”

The planning application submitted to Mendip District Council proposes the demolition of the existing garage to No 64 and the building of a two-storey extension; the building of a twostorey apartment over garage between Nos 64-70; and the demolition of the single-storey repository and the conversion of the existing two-storey repository to a four-bedroom home.

An earlier plan for the site was turned down by the district council, which said it would result in a development which was harmful to the street scene and the character and appearance of the existing building.

The revised proposal was considered by Wells City Council’s planning committee on April 19, which had no objections.

The A2 Gallery in Wells has a new owner. Simon Schachter has swapped his job as an art teacher at a school in Hampshire for running the gallery in High Street that sells and showcases artists’ work. A mixed media artist himself, Simon said: ‘I’ve been wanting a new venture.’

Chance to see and buy unique crafts THE Bishop’s Barn in Wells is being turned into an exhibition, shop and workshop space in May by the Craft Unit.

The Mendip-based Craft Unit showcases a unique range of craft and decorative arts, made by people working in supported environments, including people with learning disabilities and mental health conditions.

As part of the Into the Barn initiative, it is working with local organisations Orchard Vale Trust, Artbox Frome, Openstorytellers and Banwell Pottery, each of whom support people with learning disabilities to explore their creativity and develop their arts practice.

The art exhibition will show an exciting body of work from each organisation and will be open alongside the Craft Unit’s shop within the barn.

In addition to the exhibition and shop, artist in residence Robin Meader, who also has a learning disability, will be showing his artworks of the local area and the barn itself.

There are also a variety of

events planned that the public are invited to take part in during the five days from May 10-14.

Training session on how to use defibrillator now sited at offices TINCKNELL’S now has a defibrillator placed outside Cathedral View Offices, allowing continuous access in the event of an emergency.

Located at the company’s Wookey Hole Road site, the new defibrillator is available 24 hours a day, and will be a valuable aid when dealing with emergencies in the city.

“The defibrillator will provide a potentially life-saving facility locally,” said Diana Tincknell.

“The initiative is as a direct result of the wonderful service offered by the local First Responder Unit, of which Tincknell’s long-serving tanker driver Graham White is a valuable member.”

Opening as Kids Stuff in April 1998, the shop originally sold second-hand clothing, pushchairs and toys, but became Toymaster in 2010 and now sells the latest in toys and games, as well as all the old favourites. ‘It’s a great milestone. It’s gone from strength to strength,’ said owner Sarah Borastero, pictured above with her husband Lee. ‘You see the kids grow up over the years and now they’re coming in with their children.’

Opportunity to bid for experts’ specially made stone carvings A STONE carving festival in Wells will culminate in an auction of carvings produced by the professional craftsmen taking part in the event.

A group of talented artists from across the country are being challenged to create a stone sculpture in just two and a half days. Taking place over the May Day bank holiday weekend (May 5-7) at The Bishop’s Barn, the artists will be provided with the same size block of local limestone and given the brief of Medieval England: Knights, Bishops & Kings from which to draw their inspiration.

Visitors can expect to see the carvers use traditional tools and skills to produce an array of sculptures or reliefs covering everything from heraldry to the church, crusades to the crown, grotesques, peasants and iconography – both traditional and contemporary interpretations.

On Monday, May 7, at 2pm, all of the sculptures will be available to bid on by the public and the carvers of the best sculptures, as judged by the public, will be presented with their prizes.

“They will be unique, handmade sculptures made by professional artists and craftsmen,” said festival organiser Paul Roddan, owner of P Roddan Stonemason.

“All proceeds will go to the Bishop’s Barn.”

“Wells is world famous for its historic buildings and stone carvings so is the perfect place to hold a festival inviting craftsmen and artists from around the country to showcase their skills,” said Paul.

“It’s a great opportunity to reconnect the public with this ancient craft and for the artists to unleash their creativity. We’ll have some food, music and talks alongside the carving so there will be plenty to see and do.”

The festival is part of the Into the Barn scheme which will bring events, performances and festivals to The Bishop’s Barn and surrounding Recreation Ground throughout 2018.

Paul added: “I’m really looking forward to supporting the barn and hope the festival plays a small part in bringing this fantastic building back to life.”

Material reused to create bags PLASTIC Free Wells crafters got together recently to make bags from recycled material as an alternative to plastic bags given out in shops and supermarkets.

The bags will contain tips on reducing plastic consumption and will be handed out free at shops and supermarkets. Some call these Boomerang Bags as they can be returned to the shop for reuse, or passed on to a friend.

recognition of her remarkable contribution to all aspects of local club tennis.

Brian Smith knew Hazel well through the club and said: “By the 1970s club membership had dropped to a record low of 20.

Alongside a few others, Hazel’s mix of persuasion, coercion and relentless pressure helped the club gain a new lease of life and participation started to grow.

“With Peter Bowers she started a junior coaching programme and got funding to

replace the shale courts with Tarmac. By the time I joined the club in the late 1980s the membership was up to about 50 and two of the courts were lit.

“Hazel’s technique for getting things done was not subtle but was effective. I once asked her who was responsible for doing something at the club and she said ‘Whoever asks that question first - so you are’ and a former member told me ‘I went down to the club to try it out, played with Hazel and went home as the treasurer’.

“She was a real force and the tennis club would not be in the healthy position it is in today had it not been for the efforts that she put in over many years. Those of us who are old enough to remember her are very grateful for what she did.”

Club chair Dan Cooke added: “Tributes have been flooding in from those who remember the remarkable turnaround Hazel achieved for our club.

“She would always be armed with both a tennis racket and pen and paper to make sure names would be quickly on a list for new tasks to develop and promote tennis in Wells.

“We certainly wouldn’t have in excess of 200 members playing regular tennis today in Wells without her efforts and determination.”

Another lasting legacy of Hazel’s time at the club was the formation of the annual 100+ tournament where the combined age of each pair had to add up to 100 or more.

The club is plannning to dedicate a bench in Hazel’s memory.

WELLS Tennis Club members have paid tribute to pioneering club member Hazel Willmott who died on March 22.

Hazel joined the club in the 1960s, while she was a Physical Training teacher at The Blue School, and remained a member until ill health forced her to stop when in her 60s.

She was not just a member but served many years as chairman, ladies’ captain and club president, and also chaired the North Somerset League.

Notably she is one of only two people to be awarded an Honourable Membership in

Win two places on High Parts Tour plus cream teas WELLS Cathedral is launching an exciting new High Parts Tour which will give visitors the chance to experience behindthe-scenes views of the iconic building from some of its highest points.

The Cathedral is also offering delicious afternoon teas in the atmospheric cloisters as part of a new ‘pop up café’ experience.

And Wells Voice readers have the chance to combine the two if they win this month’s mouthwatering competition.

The Dean of Wells enjoys afternoon tea in the cloister at Wells Cathedral given the chance to climb spiral staircases – there are up to 250 steps – to explore the ‘high parts’ of the building as trained guides provide fascinating insights into the history, architecture and stories of Wells Cathedral.

Tour participants will discover hidden spaces, galleries and chambers including behind the Wells clock, considered to be the second oldest clock mechanism in Britain, and one of only two surviving medieval tracing floors in the country where masons drew designs of areas of the building on the floor.

The route will take in a walk along the singing gallery, discover Wells Cathedral’s trumpet holes, explore the south transept roof space and allow participants to marvel at

the nave from a very different perspective. Tours will run regularly throughout the week and places can be pre-booked via the Cathedral’s website. Visitors will need to ensure they are fit and well enough to take part; the booking process will outline the necessary requirements and restrictions.

Jackie Croft, Administrator and Chapter Clerk at Wells Cathedral, said: “We are really excited to be giving visitors the opportunity to see the hidden spaces of the Cathedral. The new High Parts Tour does not include going up the tower, however the Cathedral has wanted to provide an enjoyable and informative tour route for visitors and there is something to capture the imagination of all. We know it will bring an added dimension to an already memorable visit.

“The Cathedral is grateful to the Friends of Wells Cathedral for their help with providing funds to enable the development of new bannisters and barriers on the route.”

Foundation awards festival £1,000 grant WELLS Theatre Festival has been awarded £1,000 by the Cameron Macintosh Foundation.

A spokesperson for the festival said: “We are delighted at this endorsement from such a prestigious grant giving body.”

One of the charity’s aims is to promote and develop theatrical, musical and dramatic arts, and a foundation spokesperson said: “The Macintosh Foundation is delighted to award the Wells Theatre Festival a grant to support this exciting and innovative venture. We wish them every success in their first year.”

The theatre festival takes place from July 12-15. Festival volunteers handed out leaflets about it from a stall at Wells Market in April to help promote the event. Performances and

workshops will take place in venues around Wells including Wells & Mendip Museum, Cedars Hall, Wells Almshouses Chapel, Little Theatre, The Globe Inn and The Bishop’s Barn.

The festival will feature a community production of Romeo and Juliet, performed on the lawn in front of Wells Cathedral, for which Neil Johnson has been rehearsing the dramatic fight and stage combat scenes with the main characters.

There will also be a promenade performance of another Shakespeare masterpiece, King Lear, at The Bishop’s Palace. Those watching will walk with the actors from scene to scene through the rooms and grounds of the Palace, while enjoying the dramatic action.

Date set for another clean-up

Showcase for musical talent

A CLEAN up campaign in Wells was judged such a success that it is going to be repeated in June.

Deputy mayor Councillor Celia Wride organised a litter pick around the city in March as part of the Great British Spring Clean.

Organisations and individuals who got involved met for a feedback session with Celia in Wells Town Hall on April 20.

As a result, another litter pick has been planned for June 1, 2 and 3.

“The meeting was really well attended and there were lots of suggestions for the future,” said Celia.

“One was contacting local farmers and reusing feed bags instead of using green rubbish bags. Another was painting eyes on walls where people persistently drop litter.

“Tom Ronan of Plastic Free Wells suggested a two-minute clean. The idea is that when you are going out or arriving somewhere you take just two minutes to pick up litter near you.”

Plastic Free Wells volunteers removed 14 bags of rubbish from St Andrew’s stream near the Lidl store in one morning during the March litter pick.

Others taking part included Badgers from St John Ambulance who cleaned up outside their headquarters in Wells.

A CELEBRATION of Somerset music talent is being held in Wells as part of this year’s Somerset Day activities.

The first Somerset Day was held in 2015, following a public vote that chose May 11 for this special day. The date marks King Alfred the Great’s routing of the Vikings from his stronghold in the Somerset marshes in May 878.

The Celebrating Somerset Talent event will take place at Cedars Hall on Saturday, May 12, starting at 6.30pm.

Compered by Ben McGrail of ITV West Country, it will feature music from The Drystones, Yeovilton Military Wives Choir and young musicians from across the county, and will raise funds for the Somerset Hospice Movement.

Contest gains added lustre THERE have been more than 50 entries already for this year’s Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) competition.

The contest provides a showcase for local, national and international artists, and can be the springboard to a lucrative career.

Prizes in the 2018 competition include a national press launch, an exhibition at London’s JGM Gallery and a

cheque for £1,000.

“The competition is now in its sixth year and it becomes more prestigious all the time,” said Paddy O’Hagan, chair of WAC. “Artists are clearly excited by it, and the standard of entries is extremely high.”

WAC has announced that Sir Christopher Frayling, recent Rector of the Royal College of Art as well as Chairman of the Arts and Design Councils, has become

The competition is open to all artists aged 18 and over, who can enter up to three works. The deadline for entries is Monday, July 2.

An exhibition of shortlisted entries will be staged once again at The Bishop’s Palace, from October 8-21.

“I am particularly pleased to be working with The Bishop’s Palace who have been exceptionally supportive,” said Paddy.

“This year the exhibition space will be even better, with proper display boards and professional lighting.”

There will also be a 64page full colour catalogue for the first time showcasing the entrants’ work and providing commentary by the judges, as well as providing advertising opportunities.

Resumption of free weekly walks WELLS Cathedral’s free weekly walks have resumed.

The popular stained glass Window Walks and Explore the Embroideries weekly walks take place most Wednesday and Saturday mornings (April to October) from 11.10am and 11.40am respectively.

This year also sees the addition of Stone Carvings walks at 10.40am offering a look at some of the Cathedral’s remarkable medieval carvings.

Each walk lasts 20 minutes; there is no need to book and a different theme is offered each month. For all stone carvings and stained glass tours, binoculars are recommended as many images and carvings are high up or quite small.

For more in-depth tour options, the Cathedral also provides free daily guided tours which run at regular intervals throughout the day for an hour at a time (not Sundays).

Merv ready to step away after 50 years with plant hire firm MERV Howard is looking forward to more time to himself when he retires after 50 years with plant hire and demolition firm RM Penny Ltd. He drove diggers and excavators for the Ston Eastonbased company for 18 years before moving into the office, where he is now the plant hire manager.

“It doesn’t seem like five

minutes ago that I walked up the yard on a Saturday lunchtime to get the job,” said Merv, aged 72, who joined Penny in 1968.

“It was just a few diggers and lorries when I started but it’s got so much bigger, tenfold probably.

The lorries have got bigger, and we do more demolition work now.”

Merv organises the plant hire fleet, including the drivers, as

well as taking orders for topsoil and aggregates. His last day will be May 4, after which he will be free to spend more time tending to the cows and sheep he keeps, and going for walks with his wife.

“We work long hours and I want a bit more time to myself now,” said Merv, who lives in Oakhill. “Me and the wife love walking. If the weather’s nice, we can just go off for a walk.”

Homes work made easier YMCA Mendip has been awarded Registered Provider status by Homes England. This means that it will not only be able to continue to maintain the more than 100 bed spaces it already provides for young people within the community, but it will also be easier to increase this provision in the future.

Karen Deverell, chief executive of YMCA Mendip, which has a base in Wells, said: “This achievement means that YMCA Mendip can now look to develop more housing for young people and acquire existing homes for those struggling to access the housing market. This is so important, as we know how difficult it is for young people on low incomes in the area who are unable to get onto the housing ladder and struggle to afford the cost of market rents.”

Insight into Palace’s appeal

Festival bar will stay open late

VISIT by Coach volunteers have toured The Bishop’s Palace and grounds to give them more knowledge about what they have to offer tourists.

The volunteers are recruited and organised by Ross Young of Wells Independents on behalf of Wells Chamber of Commerce.

“Eight out of our 12 volunteers were able to join the tour which gave us so much more to talk to guides, drivers and visitors about and we will definitely use the knowledge to encourage more to visit,” said Ross.

“It was also good to learn that the Bishop’s Table restaurant can monitor and record the number of coach drivers who use it and the shop can do the same for those who use the ‘rest room’ facilities.”

Visit by Coach provides a meet and greet system to encourage more group travel visits to Wells and extend visitors’ spend in the city.

THIS year’s Wells Comedy Festival will feature a late-night bar at Wells Little Theatre.

Open until 1am each night of the event, which takes place from May 25-27, it will serve proper Somerset cider and a speciallybrewed local beer exclusively for the festival.

The festival is also welcoming the Bianco Rosso Pizza Co, serving up fresh wood-fired pizzas, arancini and focaccia, and Claud the Butler, bringing its pop-up cafe, offering artisan coffee and home-baked cakes.

Both will be serving outside the Wells Little Theatre all weekend.

While shows by some of this year’s big-name performers such as Mark Watson and Sara Pascoe have sold out, there are still tickets available for other acts.

Veteran mute swan Bryn dies ONE of The Bishop’s Palace’s veteran mute swans died in April.

Bryn is thought to have died of old age having reached the age of 10.

He and partner Wynn travelled from Wales in 2013 to take up residence in Wells.

The pair have had five clutches of cygnets in their time at the Palace, and Wynn has laid more eggs in her nest and has been sitting on them.

Consider joining ranks of our volunteers THIS month, I’d like to ask readers of the Wells Voice if they are aware of or have ever considered becoming a volunteer within the police service?

Our current volunteers can be anyone who might like to assist us by helping with Community Speedwatch sessions, Special Constables (who through initial training will actively patrol areas alongside regular officers/ Police Community Support Officers), Cadets (young people who have an interest in policing or helping in communities) or Neighbourhood Watch coordinators/ administrators.

Our current volunteers here in the Wells area are very committed and dedicated people who greatly assist us at a local level, without whom our ability to meet some of the public demands would fall short.

These people are usually unpaid but are committed enough to want to try and make

which undoubtedly occurs far too regularly on our roads. We have a group of Community Speedwatch volunteers locally who regularly try and carry out speed checks at known hotspots and it is surprising how many vehicles have been monitored and recorded travelling at irresponsible speeds.

Our Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators and scheme members are also very impactive in trying to reduce crime activity – they quietly keep an eye out for any suspicious activities, reporting anything promptly to the police. Very often the unsung heroes in many senses of the word.

Police Cadets are not just young persons who have an interest in policing, they often attend local events within the community to offer their help and provide crime reduction advice in whatever way they can.

This in turn leads them to gain invaluable skills and confidence to grow into more grounded and responsible citizens.

Special Constables provide a visible uniformed police presence, working alongside regular officers and not replacing them. Again, they are committed people who want to make a difference to their communities, helping and providing assistance within the confines of policing.

Most are required to complete a minimum of 16 hours’ patrol per month once fully trained – this is usually on top of their normal employment, so dedication is certainly the name of the game with them.

And then there are some

volunteers who are happy to complete some admin type roles within the police service which is equally as important to us.

Well, how about giving some of the above roles some consideration? Do you have some spare time on your hands and want to be part of a policing team? If so, call into any local police station and have a chat to find out more, or visit the Avon and Somerset Constabulary website and search on “Volunteers.” It’s a great opportunity to contribute further to your local area, and very often can improve confidence in your own abilities.

If any of these roles are not something you wish to be involved in, why not consider getting an insight into what type of incidents the police deal with in the course of their daily patrols by applying to attend a “Ride Along Scheme”?

Again this can be requested through an application form on the Constabulary’s website under that heading. This is a particularly good way of observing what type of incidents the police deal with, whilst getting to know your local officers better and the role they try and play in our areas. Persons need to be over 18 years old and be prepared for background checks to be made.

Once authorised, an officer will make contact to arrange a mutually convenient time when you will be able to effectively crew up with them when on shift; however you will be classed as an observer and will not be expected to deal with any incidents.

LATE last year Wells & District Neighbourhood Watch had a recruiting drive in South Horrington. Very soon three coordinators were registered and other residents volunteered their support.

As well as providing neighbourly support and reassurance, the emerging group showed their mettle when the snowfalls came. The new groups, helped by further volunteers and the support of Horrington and

Maesbury Residents’ Association, worked hard to clear the roads and pavements. This community spirit was celebrated recently by a well-attended bring and share lunch at the cricket club.

New lunch venue a big success THE first SOUP to be held at the Elim Connect Centre, the new and bigger venue for the charity lunches, took place on April 14.

Four good causes have four minutes to tell the audience while they enjoy a light lunch what they do and how they would use the money raised at the event. The four at the latest event were Freewheelers Blood Bikes, Mid Somerset Tinnitus Self Help Group, the Wells-based Connect Community Outreach and Wells City Band.

The audience voted that

Connect Community Outreach, which works with the homeless and rough sleepers, should receive half the £700 on offer.

The rest was split equally between the other three charities.

Two very different productions on way WELLS Little Theatre is looking forward to two new productions.

Outrageous sci-fi horror musical Little Shop of Horrors is this year’s spring musical.

It is being performed in May, the same month in which there will be an introductory evening and auditions for The Merry Wives of Windsor, a Shakespeare play being staged in September.

While Little Shop of Horrors is often performed by youth companies, Wells is performing the show with a full adult cast.

It will run from Tuesday, May 15, to Saturday, May 19, at 7.30pm each night, with an additional matinee performance at 3pm on the Saturday.

Tickets are £12, concessions £10, available at www.wellslittle theatre. The in-person box office next opens at the theatre

on May 8 and May 12, from noon to 1.30pm, and from 7pm to 8.30pm on May 9, and the 45 minutes before each performance.

The Merry Wives of Windsor will run from September 19-22. Costumes from Angels in London – the largest and most prestigious costumier in the country – will set it in true Elizabethan style, with authentic medieval music from a professional performer.

Gamers in weekly fight for supremacy IT is 7.45pm on a Thursday night, and a fight is about to break out in the Seager Hall, Wells.

Two members of the Mid Somerset Wargames Group are facing each other across a table laid out with a board, plastic tiles, packs of cards and sets of rules as they prepare to engage in the 1808 Battle of Rolica.

It was one of the first battles of the Peninsular War, explains Andy Woodward, one of the group’s longest serving members – he joined in 1972 at the age of 16.

“I’ve always been interested in military matters,” he says.

“When I started playing the most popular period was the Napoleonic period.

“The reason was the availability of figures. I have a large Napoleonic collection in 15mm, though now my favourite is board games.”

His opponent for the night is Matthew Piotrowski, a senior manager in waste management who is one of the club’s newest members, having joined six months ago.

A video games and board games fan, he said: “A lot of diverse people come to play. It’s a really good way of getting your gaming fix.”

Mid Somerset Wargames Group was formed in 1964 and claims to be the oldest wargaming club in the country.

It currently has more than 40 members including a Wells firefighter and Wells school caretaker, a locksmith and a tax inspector.

“It can be quite addictive,” said Adam French, one of those

“People enjoy modelling and painting scenery, and you buy more figures than you need.

“I’ve been collecting Bretonia army figures and painting them since the age of 14 and I’m 47 now.”

Adam travels to club nights from Crewkerne, while others attend from Yeovil, Westonsuper-Mare, Cheddar, Wincanton

and Coleford, though most members live in Wells. They have seen a shift over the years from two players directing armies of soldiers to more multi-player games and board games.

In honour of saint and heritage

Student sets up art history talk

IT is believed that there was a chapel dedicated to Saxon Saint Etheldreda in the part of Wells which is now Southover.

Saint Ethelreda’s day is June 23 and Southover will be celebrating not only her saint’s day but the unique heritage of its own within the pantheon of Wells social history.

Did you know for example that Southover used to be the main road into Wells before the establishment of Priory Road in the 1800s, the wooden post from the Keward gibbet is believed to form one of the door posts of one of the dwellings in Southover, and that one of the premises has a leper’s window through which the sick were fed so as to avoid human contact and contamination?

People who lived in Southover were the working class of Wells.

There were lodging houses for the navvies when building the railways, brothels to serve the

ON March 26, art historian Joanna Cobb gave a talk entitled ‘Off the Wall: a Brief History of Women as Artists at Large’ at Wells Cathedral School.

Organised by Year 13 student Myrtle Boot for the Creative Arts Committee, the talk was attended by sixth formers, teachers, parents and others from the Cathedral School community.

Myrtle, encouraged by her history of art teacher Hilary Wynn Murphy, set up the committee herself, and now plans to continue her studies in the subject at university, following a gap year learning Italian at Perugia University and working as a warden in the state rooms at Buckingham Palace.

Joanna, whose art history lectures in Dinder and other local venues are already well established, has also presented talks for the U3A, including for a large group from the Wells branch in the summer of 2017.

She will also be lecturing for the WEA and Dillington House in due course.

Her popular monthly lectures in Dinder Village Hall resume on May 14 and continue throughout the summer term and autumn 2018.

Brass band the Pink Bra’ss will be holding another charity concert in Wells Town Hall this summer. The concert is in aid of Cancer Research, and will feature a solo from trombonist Stephen Sykes, who himself has cancer.

His mother Jo Sykes will conduct the band. Organisers are appealing for donations of prizes for the raffle being held during the concert, which is on June 30 at 7.30pm. Teenager Ellie cheers elderly

Society Come & Sing invitation

NOT many teenagers give up their Saturday time to talk with the elderly.

One is Ellie Shaw, a Year 9 pupil at Wells Blue School who has become a regular and much appreciated visitor at the Abbeyfield retirement home in the city’s New Street.

“I decided to volunteer here because I wanted to speak to people, cheer them up and improve their day,” said Ellie, aged 14.

She has an aunt in a Buckinghamshire care home and knows how lonely that life can be there.

“Having a volunteer such as Ellie has been a win, win situation for the residents at Abbeyfield house,” said the home’s administrator Isobel Panton.

“They all really look forward to Saturday mornings when Ellie comes in and at the same time she is gaining some valuable volunteering experience.”

Ellie is also planning to help one resident by painting her

WELLS Cathedral Oratorio Society once again welcomes voices from Wells and surrounding areas to its annual Come & Sing day.

It is an opportunity for local sopranos, altos, tenors and basses to work with one of the UK’s leading conductors, Matthew Owens, and sing with members of the choir in a relaxed atmosphere. This year the piece singers will rehearse and perform is Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, his setting of the shortened Catholic Mass for the Dead.

Fauré wrote: “Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.”

The society will also perform this beautiful work at the 19182018 Centenary Concert for Remembrance on November 10, along with Jonathan Dove’s For an Unknown Soldier. The society and choristers of Wells Cathedral Choir will be accompanied by the renowned London Mozart Players and conducted by Owens at this special event.

The Come & Sing takes place on Saturday, May 5, in the Methodist Church, Wells, from 9.30am-5pm. The day concludes with an informal performance of the Requiem.

Bishop blesses workers on visit to copper mine THE Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Rt Rev Peter Hancock, has blessed copper mine workers during a visit to Zambia.

Bishop Peter visited KPM copper mine in Chingola in the Northern Diocese of Zambia to learn about the mining process, its importance and impact on the region and bless the workers there.

Bishop Peter and Bishop Ruth Worsley, the Bishop of Taunton, accompanied by 28 parish representatives from across Bath and Wells, are currently in Zambia to celebrate 40 years of the diocese’s companion link with the five Zambian dioceses.

The group of 30 are in small teams, each touring one of the dioceses of Northern, Eastern, Luapula, Lusaka and Central, staying with local hosts and absorbing and experiencing all

Dementia Friend session in library

Great Wall trek to raise funds A COUPLE are planning a 50 kilometre trek along the Great Wall of China to raise money for Heads Up. Alison and Frank Wood are hoping to raise £10,000 from the sponsored trek, and a dinnerdance on the Mendips in June.

“I was ill with post traumatic stress after working as an ambulance paramedic seeing many horrific accidents and off work for nine months,” said Frank.

“Mental health had a real stigma then but now you can talk about it.

“Thanks to the work of people like Heads Up, mental health is no longer a taboo subject.”

Alison is motivated by memories of her father who died from Alzheimer’s Disease.

“The services provided by local charities like Heads Up

Alison and Frank Wood with posters for their dinner dance and The Lawrence Centre are becoming ever more important because the NHS lacks the necessary resources,” said Alison, who was a practice nurse at Wells Health Centre for ten years.

The Woods’ other fundraiser is a dinner dance at The Wellsway, near West Harptree, on Saturday, June 2.

ALZHEIMER’S Society’s Dementia Awareness Week has been renamed as Dementia Action Week. It takes place from May 21-27 and Alzheimer’s Society is calling on everyone in Somerset to plan actions, big or small, to make a huge difference to people affected by dementia.

There are estimated to be more than 9,000 people living with dementia in Somerset.

One way to get involved is to become a Dementia Friend, and people are being invited to become a Dementia Friend at a session being held at Wells Library on Monday, May 21.

Dementia Friends gives people an understanding of dementia and the small things that can be done to make a difference. The session, from 10.30am-11.30am, will explain what it is like to live with dementia and how to turn that understanding into action.

The blowsy blooms of the former and the statuesque elegance of the bearded iris are part and parcel of the oldfashioned opulence of gardens bathed in summer sunshine.

Wells Gardening Club are delighted to welcome Susannah Applegate of Langport to give her excellent presentation on these two plants. Susannah has worked at Kelways Nursery and she is holder of a collection of bearded iris. This will be a welcome taste of summer and an evening to look forward to.

A bonus to the event will be the Gardening Club Plant Sale with a variety of plants with which to stock pots and borders.

All this takes place on Thursday, May 10, in Wells Town Hall.

The Plant Sale starts at 6.30pm and continues through the evening. Admission free.

Conor Whelan will be guest poet at Wells Fountain Poets’ May meeting THE WELLS FOUNTAIN POETS A LIVELY group of poets has been meeting monthly in and around the city of Wells for 16 years. There is usually a guest poet in the first half, time for drinks and conversation in the interval, and readings from the floor in the second half. These do not need to be pre-booked; just turn up and you will be made welcome.

Wells and Wookey Hole WIs were displaying banners at the Somerset WI centenary parade that was due to take place in Wells on April 28. The Wells WI banner is brought out on special occasions and depicts WI members with a variety of crafts. Wookey Hole WI created a banner for the parade honouring the bravery of the Suffragettes by adopting their colours: purple for loyalty and dignity, white for purity and green for hope.

The date can be seen nestled amongst the thousand tiny beads that adorn the cave.

There is a lot of laughter and occasionally a few tears. We listen in a spirit of respect to every poem, whether it comes from a published poet or a complete beginner. Each reader gets a chance to read two (shortish) poems. Some people come just to listen, and some listeners become contributors.

The resolution that proved most popular with WI members nationwide was the same one that proved most popular with Wells WI at shortlisting stage: Mental Health Matters. This will now be debated further at the National WI AGM in Cardiff in June. If approved, resources will be devoted to a major WI campaign to make it as acceptable to talk about mental health as it is about physical health, and to lobby government for better support for mental illness.

Now the days are longer,

some members have started going for walks, mainly in the evenings, although a recent walk to pick wild garlic followed by a pesto making session proved so popular it had to be repeated.

A new book group has been set up – the first book to be read and discussed will be The Perfect Girlfriend by Karen Hamilton.

The group enjoyed an entertaining talk from the very experienced and knowledgeable Nicky Houston of Killens Auctioneers. She explained how objects are evidence of social history and that, because fashions come and go, the current craze for post-war furniture has made 18th and 19th century pieces much more affordable. She told us about collectors paying high prices for battery robot toys, why auctions are the best places to buy jewellery, and explained the new legislation around trading in ivory.

To celebrate the centenary of the WI, hundreds of women from local WIs were due to parade with banners through Wells on Saturday, April 28.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 1, at 7.30pm at the Mendip and Wells Museum.

This will be the AGM, at which we need to elect a new president and secretary. Members are urged to come along and vote, or to get involved – if you might be interested in leading this friendly group with the help of a very supportive committee, get in touch for a chat.

New women are always welcome and can attend as a guest before deciding to join.

Be open to help reduce the taboo Julie Wright, a humanist funeral celebrant from Wells, explains why we should be having more discussions about dying MY work as a humanist funeral celebrant is an absolute privilege.

I work with professional, compassionate funeral directors in Wells, such as Unwins, Hills and Gibbs; with the hard-working and infinitely understanding staff at Mendip Crematorium; and above all I hear the wonderful life stories of ordinary people, which are never just ‘ordinary’ but full of interest, told with love and honesty by their families.

The death of someone in your family or circle of friends is clearly a sad, sometimes devastating time, but having a fitting funeral ceremony for the person you have lost can be

a huge comfort. And this does not mean the most expensive or lavish, and certainly not ‘one-size-fits-all’. It might be a religious or non-religious ceremony, a cremation or a burial, with classical or rock music, a well-known piece of poetry or something written by a relative.

An appropriate ceremony is one which suits the family and of which the deceased would have approved.

May I encourage you all in this, the month of Dying Matters Awareness Week (May 14-20), to talk to your families about death, to speak of the funeral you would consider appropriate for yourself, to be more prepared for what is, after all, the only inevitability for us all.

Making will means decisions are yours Solicitor Judith Derbyshire of Purely Probate says that drawing up a will is a simple process that makes inheritance much easier Why make a will?

It is much better that we decide who should inherit our assets, not leave it to the intestacy rules, which are what apply if there is no will.

Under the intestacy rules, if you are married with children your spouse gets the first £250,000 and half the balance.

The other half goes to the children. If you are married but do not have children everything goes to your spouse. If you are not married, the order of inheritance is (broadly): your children, then parents, then siblings, then grandparents, then uncles and aunts. Only if there are none of these, the assets then go to the Crown.

A sad case I dealt with recently involved an unmarried man, without children and with limited assets. There were people who looked after him, and an underfunded care home where he lived for his last few years.

It would have been very simple to make a will leaving his assets to them, or to charity. But he did not make a will, and his nephews and nieces, whom he hardly knew, shared his small estate. Was this what he would have wanted?

Did you know? n If you marry, any will you have made is automatically cancelled. n Partners who are not married have no automatic right to inherit from each other. This may leave them very exposed if their partner dies; even potentially homeless. A will giving the partner the right to live in the home for a period, or for life, will protect him/ her. Otherwise, there may be no alternative but to litigate to obtain protection. Litigation is normally traumatic, and expensive. n If you give more than 10 per cent of your net estate to charity, the rate of inheritance tax is 36 per cent rather than the usual 40 per cent, and the actual gift to charity is free of inheritance tax.

Making a will is an opportunity to think about inheritance tax, and it is sometimes possible to do some tax planning, and use your will to protect against care home fees.

Somerset v London

I WAS in London this week meeting with other chartered surveyors and estate agents and listening to their anguish about lack of activity and house price falls. They do have a case but the falls are relevant to, perhaps over-hyped, prices which were only realistic for a short time.

London has a very volatile market.

In contrast, in Somerset we have a much more stable market which doesn’t have the same highs and lows. However, the point which always strikes home is the disparity in what you get for your money.

We were in Knightsbridge where 2 to 3 million gets you a decent apartment and if you’re lucky residents’ parking. Contrast this with The Old Granary which I’m selling just above Wells on the Mendips.

This is a manor house dating from the 17th century and includes a large, splendid house, a self-contained flat for staff (or your in-laws), beautifully maintained and landscaped gardens, an indoor swimming pool, a gym, fabulous stabling and 35 acres. All this for around £2,500,000.

This why many of those that are selling in London head west. Interestingly, one friend told me, as a generalisation, Chelsea moves to Gloucester and Kensington and Knightsbridge move to the South West. I’m frequently in London talking to buyers and from now on I’m going to tell anyone in Chelsea that the M4 is closing.

n NEWS IN BRIEF More repair work SUSTAINABLE Wells will be holding a third Repair Cafe in Wells on Saturday, May 19.

The venue will again be St Thomas’ Church Hall in St Thomas Street. People are invited to take their broken items to be fixed, learn how to save money by mending things, and help climate change and reduce the waste mountain.

Seafarers request THE world’s oldest maritime welfare charity is asking churches in Wells to remember the world’s seafarers in a special service.

Congregations from around the world will take part in Sea Sunday services on July 8 in aid of Sailors’ Society. Stuart Rivers, Sailors’ Society’s CEO, said: “Whether they know it or not, the people of Wells rely upon seafarers. More than 90 per cent of everything we own comes by sea.”

Annual display of miniature marvels WELLS is home to the Hilliard Society of Miniaturists which holds its annual international exhibition every year in the beautiful upper room of the Town Hall.

On show in the largest exhibition of its kind outside of London are several hundred paintings and sculptures from artists from all over the country, and abroad, including work by some of the foremost, multiaward winning miniaturists.

Historically, miniatures were synonymous with portraits, but every conceivable subject can be found in the exhibition.

Such is the skill and detail, that viewers are encouraged to take one of the many magnifying glasses available, to further enjoy delving into the depths of the paintings.

Miniature sculpture is a real rarity, and the sculpture cabinet is a valuable addition to the many paintings. It also displays lacquer boxes from Russia, which have become part of the annual exhibition and attract many collectors.

The Private View for this year’s exhibition opens by invitation on Friday, June 1, and will be attended by the Mayor of Wells, who will also present the awards. The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday, June 2, from 10am, until Saturday, June 9 (closed Sunday). Entry is free.

Crafty insight into a Bishop’s life THE Bishop’s Palace will continue its season of holiday family activities this Whitsun half term with a week of family fun from May 26 to June 3.

Hundreds get set for fun run races HUNDREDS of runners will take to the streets for the Wells Fun Run in May. The annual event, organised

by Wells City Harriers, takes place this year on Sunday, May 27.

Start times are: 10am Junior (under 8s); 10.15am 1.2k; 10.25am 3k; 10:50am 5k; 11:15am 10k.

Entries can be made in advance at entrycentral/ wellsfunrun or on the day at Race HQ in Wells Town Hall, from where race numbers and timing chips can be collected.

There will be age category prizes and a medal for every finisher.

The race for juniors will be held in the Recreation Ground while the other races start from the Market Place, and will take runners along High Street, St John Street and part of Southover. The 1.2k route continues along Silver Street and back to the moat. The other routes will take runners through Palace Farm.

The 3k runners will then turn left along a concrete path before reaching the cycle track, turn left again across a field, and re-enter Wells at the corner of the moat.

A second lap starts by turning left into the Recreation Ground, past the bandstand, right after the gate and out onto South Street, by the car parks. They will turn left along South Street and left into Silver Street and back to the moat.

After running through Palace Farm, the 5k and 10k runners will continue out to Dulcote along the cycle track, before coming back into Wells along the B3139 and alongside the moat of the Bishop’s Palace. The 10k race is two laps of the 5k route.

Organisers ask that runners are guided by marshals at Dulcote, where the 5k and 10k routes may differ slightly, and at the end of the first lap, where the 5k and 10k routes diverge.

New chairman outlines aims for season WELLS Cricket Club have had a busy few months since the outdoor season finished last September.

They have a new chairman, have been fundraising to improve their training facilities, and won the Somerset Indoor Cricket League in January, winning all of their fixtures in emphatic style.

The new chairman is Jack Moore, who teaches PE at Stoberry Park School and is an elite coach at Millfield School.

He undertook the role with a view to refocusing the Wells CC set up to give more back to every player and the local community.

“My goal for the 2018 season is to bring us all together both on and off the field, from our All Stars, aged 5-8, through to our ladies and men’s senior sides, while also giving greater focus to our community,” said Jack.

To enable every player to improve their game, the club – whose 1st XI won the Somerset Cricket League third division title last season – have been fundraising to revamp their training facilities.

“With funding from events, sponsorship from The Crossways

Breakaways bowlers claim crown WELLS Short Mat Bowls Club ended a very successful season on a high with the Breakaways 1 team winning their division and now being promoted to the first division of the Mendip League.

The first division includes teams as far away as Templecombe, with several Somerset players included in the teams Breakaways 1 will meet.

Team: John King, Pat Knott, David Gate, Nigel Dear, Graham Creasey and David Collings.

Breakaways 2 finished fifth in division three and are looking to improve this position next year.

Team: Chris Arnold, Joy Arnold, Ian Ward, Sue Higdon, Alan Locke, Renato Piancastelli, Dee Piancastelli, Joan Jenkins and Jeff Stanton.

meets at the Blue School every Monday at 6.45pm except bank holidays. Anyone interested is invited along. Total beginners are welcome, and equipment is supplied. Just turn up wearing flat shoes and try it out for three weeks with no fees. Members play for two hours with a tea and biscuits break. The club has a regular turnout of around 20 playing on four mats every Monday.

During the next 12 months the club intends to hold its first Individual Championship, various friendlies with other clubs and a five-day trip to Torquay in January.
