If lockdown restrictions continue to be eased as planned, and life returns to something closer to normality, there will be more reason than ever to celebrate and enjoy events such as the literature, theatre and food festivals, the Moat Boat Races and the arrival of the Sir Antony Gormley statue to coincide with Wells Art Contemporary.

Cinema announces date for reopening WELLS Film Centre has announced that it will be back showing films once more from Friday, May 21.

The doors will reopen after what will have been 21 weeks of closure as a result of the recent lockdown and coronavirus restrictions relating to indoor entertainment venues.

As when it has been open on other occasions during the past year, the cinema will be operating with fully Covidsecure and socially distanced screenings.

The online box office will reopen from Tuesday, May 11, when customers will be able to book for Peter Rabbit 2 (U), and two award-winning films, Nomadland (12A) and Sound Of Metal (15), all starting on Friday, May 21.

From Monday, May 17, to Thursday, May 20, proprietor Sally Cooper and other members of the team will be back in the

These arrangements are all subject to any further Government restrictions.

“We would like to thank everyone for all their continued support over this last year and we cannot wait to welcome you back to the film centre this May,” said Sally.

News of the reopening comes as a new survey reveals how eager the UK public is to return to cinemas.

A nationwide survey, carried out by research agency MetrixLab and commissioned by the Film Distributors’ Association, reports that 59 per cent of respondents cited the cinema as their most missed outof-home entertainment activity.

According to the survey, 40 per cent of audiences are planning to return within the first few weeks of cinemas reopening and a further 36 per cent within the first couple of months.

The research also confirmed that lockdown over the last year has reignited audiences’ passion for seeing films on the big screen, with those who have digitally rented or purchased films highlighted as the most likely to return to the cinema as soon as they reopen.

Full range back on sale at market WELLS Market, like the other Mendip Markets, has reinstated its full range of goods in line with the new roadmap.

The statue being loaned to Wells by Sir Antony Gormley will be going on display on the West Front of Wells Cathedral to coincide with the August Bank Holiday. The work is to be called DOUBT 2021. The logo for the project, above, was designed by Gormley and Wells artist Chris Lee, and shows the work in outline.

Emma Lefevre, one of the Project Factory directors, said: “I think what people want to do is celebrate. There is a lot to look forward to.”

The Community Day will encompass events at The Bishop’s Palace, the Cathedral and Cathedral Green, with

plans for a fete, music and street performers.

The City of Wells Lions are hopeful that the Moat Boat Races will be back on August Bank Holiday Monday. Lions president Rod Major said: “Everybody involved is desperate to do it.

Unless Covid restrictions inhibit us from doing it then we will do it. We’re all excited about it.”

Wells Food Festival had to be a virtual affair last year, but organisers are increasingly confident that the real thing will be back in Wells on October 10.

“It’s looking good for a physical festival this year,” said festival director Jon Abbott.

“We will try and do what we can within any restrictions at the time. As we come out of lockdown, it’s looking exciting for events in Wells.”

Charlie Bigham’s will once again be the food festival’s headline sponsor, and Charlie Bigham said: “Our Bigham’s Quarry Kitchen makes us proud members of the Wells community, we are thrilled to continue our relationship as the headline sponsor of the Wells Food Festival this year.

“We’re really looking forward to having the event in person once again, where people can come and discover some amazing local artisan food producers, and join us in supporting them.”

Increasing numbers of visitors are expected to be drawn to Wells as the year unfolds.

A spokesperson for Visit Wells said: “We’ve seen a large increase of interest in recent weeks from people looking to book a holiday to the Wells area. Visitors see Somerset as a safe and spacious region to visit, and Wells in particular as a destination which offers the perfect mix of heritage, events, activities, independent shopping and quirky accommodation.

“Attractions and accommodation have reported selling out of tickets and rooms faster than ever before, so the appetite to make the most of the tourist season is evident, and we’re all looking forward to a fabulous summer for Wells.”

Wells City Council’s Town Clerk Steve Luck said that the months ahead hold plenty of promise.

“We look forward to visitors returning to our beautiful city and the reopening of our city centre,” he said.

“For residents, the city council hope to complete the purchase of the Portway Annexe to bring it back for community use. We also have the transfer of the Wells Recreation Ground Trust back to the city and we are looking forward to maximising the use of the Bishop’s Barn and Bandstand.

“We also hope to work with Mendip District Council to improve the Market Place and make it a vibrant appealing area to visit.”

Working together to enhance community

Some of the biggest events in Wells this year are being organised by Project Factory.

One of the directors, Emma Lefevre, explains more about the organisation, and what is coming up FOR some years Project Factory has been organising events and meetings to bring together the community. Following an introduction by the Dean of Wells, Kirstie Harris and I started working together with members of the community to devise Wake Up Wells. Wake Up Wells proposed that in the wake of the City of Culture bid in 2017, organisations and councils should work together to respond to and address some of the issues we face as a community.

During this time we carried out a community survey, held

a stakeholder conference, a community day, a lantern parade and offered a calendar of events.

Like many of the successful organisations in Wells, Project Factory is run by volunteers.

Recent projects include leading the administration, co-ordination and organisation of Wells Coronavirus Network.

Kirstie and I love involving the community in creative projects and community art, and we are currently working with Wells City Council to buntify the city in May. We all need cheering up and decorating our city and streets with creative and colourful bunting demonstrates how we can still have fun and be resourceful faced with protracted periods of lockdown.

This summer we are also working with the Rotary Club of Wells and ‘Fresh n’ Good’ of

The lantern parade that took place in Wells in January 2020 Sustainable Wells to deliver the Big Picnic Community Day on July 24 – by the summer we feel the restrictions should have lifted sufficiently that we can come together and enjoy being part of the community in a traditional summer-style picnic and fete.

We also worked hard to support the council in its application to secure the Portway Annexe.

Project Factory has been asked by Wells Cathedral to help deliver the Gormley Project.

This is the generous loan by sculptor Antony Gormley of a new work which will occupy a vacant niche on the West Front of the Cathedral. In this we have support from members of Wells Art Contemporary including Paddy O’Hagan, the mastermind behind the project, June MacFarlane, Tracey Grace, Sophie Rucker, Giles Baker Smith and Grace England. We are working closely with the museum, Wells Cathedral and Visit Wells.

This is an exciting project for Wells, which should draw thousands of visitors and help

the local economy with its recovery over the 18 months that it is installed. The challenge is to raise the funds to get it here, installed and secured, to engage the community and support the visitor economy.

We need your help. So far through generous donations we have raised £2,800 but that isn’t going to get the Gormley here.

We have a lot to look forward to, businesses and families in Wells have been hit hard by the pandemic, we really hope that the community can pull together to get this sculpture here – the long-term benefits for the local community and economy massively outweigh the costs – we are grateful for any amount.

Bunting set to spread cheer far and wide

By Emma James THE Wells Community Bunting Project has got off to a flying start with almost all of the 1.5 kilometres of bunting needed to ‘buntify’ the city centre already made.

The bunting will be hung by volunteers on May 16, with the official opening to be held on May 17 to coincide with the government’s next lifting of lockdown restrictions.

Volunteers have already signed up and the Town Hall has kindly agreed to lend its mobile staircase. Entries are anticipated from individuals of all ages, schools, shops and whole streets.

There are six ‘Big Bunting Awards’ with prizes donated from the Wells Loyalty League.

These include children’s awards in different age groups as well as ‘Best Buntified Street’, ‘Most Creative’ and ‘Best Recycled’.

The Wells project is keen to include those who have never tried to sew before. Beginners will find a huge amount of support available with the group’s Facebook page providing

links to a free online training video on the Somerset Skills and Learning platform.

“It covers everything you need to know in order to make bunting and there will be someone to help you out if you get stuck,” said Rachel.

“Anyone who signs up will receive a regular update and a photo of the week with links to our Zoom coffee morning.”

The idea to bring the community together through the creation of bunting in all its forms has been met with such enthusiasm that there now appears to be a shortage of material. Donations of fabric will be gratefully received and anyone who has spare material is asked to get in touch. Ideas shared about project to establish Community Garden

DISCUSSIONS have been taking place about the proposed Community Garden to be created in front of the Bishop’s Barn.

Members of Wells Rotary Club have drawn up proposals for a garden on the grassed area that would be designated as a public Garden of Reflection and Renewal.

The idea was well received

by Wells city councillors when Rotary Club President Alan Webb and Incoming President Wendy Ray made a presentation about the project to a full council meeting in March.

Much now depends on the city council’s takeover of the Recreation Ground and Bishop’s Barn from Mendip District

Council, expected to be in the summer.

In the meantime, consideration is being given to the design and costings for the garden, and a meeting of some of the main people involved, including Alan, Wendy and Lesley Hegarty from the Hegarty Webber Design Partnership, was held in early April to share ideas.

“We are currently preparing a preliminary design for the garden such that a budget can be prepared. We can go no further than that at this time until the Bishop’s Barn and Recreation Ground revert to the ownership of Wells City Council, when a formal approval can be given,” said Alan.

“The point of our garden proposal at this time is that we would like it to be incorporated within any future plans for the Bishop’s Barn area. This will contribute to enhancing the whole area as a ‘go to’ place within the city.”

Lesley’s company has particular expertise in the design of local hospice gardens and public spaces, and she said that in this instance, the Barn is key to how the garden is designed so that the two work together.

It is hoped that the garden might have a sculpture produced by a local artist, and that community groups and young people will be involved in its creation and maintenance.

The aim is also to create a garden that is wildlife friendly, and for it to be a beautiful, meditative space where people can enjoy the peace and quiet, and perhaps remember loved ones, including those who have died or become seriously ill from Covid-19.

It is also intended to be somewhere that people can reflect on and celebrate the community spirit that has been apparent throughout the pandemic.

Wendy said: “Creating a peaceful space for reflection which will inspire and uplift would be a great benefit to us all.

A statement issued on behalf of the Liberal Democrats at Mendip District Council said: “Ahead of the Wells St Thomas Ward by-election on May 6, the Mendip Liberal Democrats submitted a nomination to stand a popular and well qualified candidate.

“We have been informed that this nomination has been rejected on a technicality.

“While this is deeply frustrating, we of course respect the final decision of the returning officer.

“We regret that there will be no Liberal Democrat candidate in this by-election, however, we will continue to work for the people of Wells and Mendip.”

■ POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER ELECTIONS Voters will have the chance in May to choose the next Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner.

The PCC is responsible for the effective policing of the region, drawing up a budget – including the annual precept charged to council tax payers – setting priorities for the force through a police and crime plan and holding the chief constable and officers to account for delivering it.

What are your top three priorities for policing in the Avon and Somerset force area?

Kerry Barker: Successful policing depends upon the gathering of local intelligence by local police officers. My priorities are: to strengthen community policing with more officers who live and work in the areas for which they are responsible; stop the closure of police stations; bring back and strengthen specialist detective teams, such as burglary teams and sexual assault teams.

Each will have the aim of improving the welfare and safety of women.

Cleo Lake: Trust – the police need to reflect the communities they work for. This requires active recruitment among under-represented groups, and supporting recruits through challenges.

Prevention – reform of drug laws, which create needless criminals and victims - is required. Focus should be on cybercrime, which denies many their savings, and road safety, including pavement parking.

Despite budget pressures, the public deserve value-for-money policing and for their priorities to be met.

Heather Shearer: Catch and prosecute burglars and scammers – currently only 8% of burglars are detected; Invest in responsive neighbourhood police teams so they can truly be part of their communities; Work more effectively with partner organisations across the county

Delight at renovation of outdoor space THE garden area at the Lawrence Centre in Wells is undergoing a transformation thanks to support from the City of Wells Lions Club and the efforts of volunteers.

The Lawrence Centre, next to Union Street car park, is a registered charity that provides day opportunities for older people including those living with memory loss and health issues.

Its outdoor space was overgrown with weeds, ivy and large shrubs, but a lot of this has been cleared and replaced with bulbs and plants that will attract insects and birds, and be a pleasant space for centre users.

Rebecca Edwards began work on the garden in November after responding to a post asking for volunteers to help rescue it on the Let’s Do It Wells website.

The work has now been given a funding boost after the City of Wells Lions handed over a 450 euros (£379) grant to help with the cost of the project.

Wells Lions secretary Ian Williams said: “The City of Wells Lions are delighted to support the Lawrence Centre proposal for a garden in response to the challenge on the Let’s Do It Wells website for an environmental project that would satisfy the criteria for a Lions European Environment grant.

“We were successful in our application and were awarded 450 euros towards the cost of the project.

“Not only will the garden be designed to attract wildlife but it will also provide a peaceful

Rebecca said that the garden was full of ivy and weeds and

over-large shrubs and needed a redesign to make it a more inviting space for the day visitors to enjoy in the summer months.

She cleared the weeds and ivy and added some daffodils,

and can now carry out further planting after receiving the Lions funding.

“I have been using the funding to add new beds and plants to the garden,” she said.

“Paul Marsh from the Wells Lions is also helping by restoring a garden bench and making a gate to make the garden secure.

Also many thanks to Hillier Garden Centre in Cheddar for donating compost.”

Lawrence Centre manager Maggie Charlesworth said: “Rebecca has been amazing, completely transforming the garden as well as getting her family involved – her mother donated a garden bench which has been renovated by Paul Marsh from the Lions, and her son donated the proceeds from the sale of his unwanted furniture.

“Our members are really going to enjoy spending time outside in the lovely new garden.

We are all so delighted and enormously appreciative of all Rebecca’s hard work.”

Further funds are now being sought to help complete the planting and add more garden furniture so the day visitors can enjoy sitting in the garden.

‘Campaign starting to have an effect’ SOMERSET Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has said that the beds at St Andrews Ward mental health unit will remain in Wells until at least summer 2022.

Campaigners against the relocation of the beds to Yeovil are hailing this as a victory in their efforts to keep the unit at Priory Health Park open.

The CCG announced last September that it would be relocating the 14 Wells beds to Yeovil. Since then, campaigners against the move have held a number of protests, and organised a petition that has amassed nearly 2,500 signatures.

They held a Day of Action in Glastonbury on April 17, similar to the one in Wells in December, and are planning another demonstration at the CCG offices in Yeovil in May. The campaign group said in a press release: “The campaign is now starting to have an effect.

We have been very pleased to note that the closure of the ward has now been put back to ‘no earlier than summer 2022’.

“With the campaign continuing for another year,

Talks about options for skatepark FURTHER to the results of Wells Skatepark Community Group’s recent consultation, Wells City Council has agreed to investigate the possibility of an asset transfer of the land at Wells Skatepark, or a long lease.

Literature festival to make its mark again APOSTROPHES have stood sentinel for the Wells Festival ever since 2014 when Nick Leggett, chief designer at Devon-based Starry Dog Books, incorporated them into his winning design for the festival’s brochure.

As Nick said: “Starry Dog’s main business is in the publishing industry, creating children’s information books.

So we have always had a close affinity with books, literature and literature festivals. Hence the apostrophe with its strong visual link to literature and its scope for bold design.”

Instantly recognisable, the distinctive green and yellow apostrophes soon became an integral part of the festival’s look. Here were apostrophes that spoke volumes…

For some years they stood respectfully on either side of the brochure cover. Gradually, as time moved on, they began to move, to twist, turn, and even change colour. In 2020, the year when other festivals were falling by the wayside, the apostrophes took centre stage as never before. ‘We may be small. But we won’t be beaten. We will give it our all.’ To prove it they put their backs into it, quite literally, and commandeered the brochure’s front cover.

Despite being the smallest city in England, Wells hosted

a festival of literature which actually went ahead. Offering a mixture of live and virtual events, all of which were streamed to audiences from further afield than usual, the festival proved to be a resounding success. The speakers and the socially distanced audiences applauded.

Apostrophes, naturally enough, were used to frame their complimentary words.

‘So impressive to keep it feeling live and vibrant during the pandemic.’

‘Bravo Wells!’

When the new design for 2021 was revealed, it was discovered that the apostrophes had taken over. Bold and brash, bright and brilliant, the apostrophes of 2021 describe a festival that can colour opinions and push the boundaries. With its powerful livestream capacity, it can now take on the world as well as the traditional auditorium. The latest design puts a new complexion on the world; it takes liberties.

Designer Nick Leggett said: “The festival’s new look reflects the coming together of a wider audience in a multi-coloured way.”

The Wells Festival of Literature apostrophes will be very visible over the next months – announcing speakers, event times, topics, tickets, competition winners and more.

Watch out for them.

Nursery moves into new building A LOCAL nursery has ushered in a new era with a move into a new building.

Staff and children at Tree House, South Horrington, were able to start using their new premises, next to the old Tree House, at the end of March.

Director Jo Matton said: “The new building is a delight to work in, and a new experience for our children. It has so much more open space, and an outside

covered space which will mean the children can play outside in nearly all weather conditions.

“My amazing staff worked so hard to move equipment and get the nursery ready for our opening. It’s very exciting for all of us.”

The plan is for the old nursery building – the former Mendip Hospital’s sports and social club – to be replaced with two new houses.

Surge of donations brings plea for help OXFAM’S Wells store has issued an urgent appeal for volunteers to help it deal with a deluge of donations since it reopened its doors on April 12.

The shop’s appeal comes as Oxfam estimates it has a shortfall of hundreds of volunteers across the country, with some existing volunteers currently unable to return due to shielding.

The Wells shop team has seen a significant number of donations following lockdown decluttering, combined with people seeking to offload unwanted Christmas gifts.

More volunteers are needed to help sort and sell the donations in order to raise as much money as possible for Oxfam’s work around the world.

Tom Richardson, Oxfam’s Interim Head of Retail, said: “Money raised by the dedicated staff and volunteers in Oxfam’s Wells bookshop helps fight poverty and injustice around the

Charity in appeal to community THE Blue Cross pet charity is appealing for the community to support their shop in Wells, which reopened on April 12 with the latest easing of Government restrictions.

Blue Cross shops raise money for the thousands of unwanted, abandoned and sick pets cared for by the charity’s rehoming centres and hospitals every year.

The shop is calling out for pet lovers to consider joining the local team and for donations of good quality items.

Volunteer opportunities range from sorting and displaying

stock to helping customers, serving on the till and helping out with window displays. Time commitment is flexible.

A spokesperson said: “Every donation really helps us raise vital funds to help the pets in our care. To make a donation please contact the shop to arrange a time to drop off the items and please wear a face covering when inside.”

A good team can help your business thrive

HERE’S the thing: if you have your own business, do the staff come first or your clients?

There’s no doubt you need both and pretty much in equal measure, so it’s a balancing act.

Getting that balance right for your staff is just as important as being the best you can be for your clients.

When you’ve been in business as long as we have (around 30 years), you learn a lot, and much of that is because you make mistakes. The capacity for being mature enough to admit those mistakes, apologise and make appropriate reparation is crucial.

Sometimes you will feel let down by staff members. Now there is a very rigorous set of rules and regulations you must follow in dealing with this. The best case scenario is always to be able to talk to your staff member, sort out the issues which may require training or simply a change of attitude, and hopefully they will

As an employer, you need to remember that each employee has over 200 rights, while you as an employer have very few indeed. It is really important, therefore, to make sure you have good, professional HR advice.

This is one of those things which I cannot stress highly enough is a really important part of becoming an employer. You may rarely need to use it, especially if you are a really good judge of character, but if you do, it will pay dividends.

Now, if you are fortunate to have a really good team around you, you will know how immeasurably this helps with building business. Our team has developed into something rather special in recent years. The clients they work with tell us this, and I think they may be aware of it too, since the Christmas gift they clubbed together to buy for us was signed by ‘The Dream Team’ – modesty obviously a strong point! They are absolutely right and we think a great deal of each and every one of them.

When times have been difficult, they have been an asset to the company. This is where the balancing act is helped along, because in supporting us, they also have the best interests of the clients at heart. If any one of us lets a client down, we all check out our practices to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. Everyone is invested in ensuring that the top quality service we dreamt of offering all those years ago continues. We may be updating and rethinking along the way, but the core values of good service, good value and support for our clients are still the mainstay of our business.

So, while you are increasing your client base by putting your heart and soul into your business, please don’t forget that the team around you is crucial for sustaining and developing that part of your business too.

Flapjack sales will benefit Cathedral A NEW shop dedicated to flapjacks has opened in Wells – and its owners have chosen Wells Cathedral as the recipient of its local fundraising.

Flapjackery has launched on Sadler Street where customers can choose from a variety of gluten-free flapjacks. And the store will be supporting the Cathedral, with £1.50 of every Wells-specific box of six and £4 for every box of 12 flapjacks donated to the historic building.

The company was founded in 2015 by friends Sally Jenkin and Carol Myott. They started baking in their respective kitchens, selling at their local country market in Tavistock, Devon. Now they employ more than a dozen people in Devon, with more members added to the team with their new shop.

The business partners said: “Our first flapjack shop outside of Devon is a really exciting venture for us. Wells is such a beautiful city, and the Cathedral is a key part of its attraction.

We’re delighted to be supporting it and to be opening our doors here and welcoming the people of Wells and the surrounding area.”

The Canon Chancellor of Wells Cathedral, the Rev Canon Dr Rob James, said: “It’s great to see new shops opening in the heart of Wells. It brings hope for the recovery of commerce and of our high streets across the

county. I am most grateful for that. Flapjackery are generously making a donation to Wells Cathedral from their sales, so when you buy flapjacks, you not only get a tasty treat, but you also help the work of the Cathedral and the heritage of the city.

Lockdown has proved a boon for Flapjackery with online deliveries of its flapjacks popular. But the intention has always been to open more shops, following the success of its flagship Tavistock store.

Sally Jenkin said: “Wells seemed the perfect city for our first venture outside of Devon with its fabulous range of independent shops and the really lovely atmosphere here.”

There will be plenty of flavours for customers to choose from such as Apple and Blackcurrant, Caramel Latte, Peanut Butter Brownie, Lemon Drizzle, Honeycomb, Passion Fruit and Dark Chocolate, Chocolate Orange, Black Forest Brownie, Rocky Road and Traditional.

The flapjacks are individually wrapped, and for multiple purchases, come in recyclable cardboard boxes. For those who would rather not take a box, 20p will be donated to Wells Cathedral.

Alongside the flapjacks, there will be other items to choose from such as fudge and jams.

Richard Lovegrove, a trustee at Wells & Mendip Museum, describes the work that has gone into transforming the museum garden AN historic walled garden has been reborn.

Extending to approximately quarter of an acre, the garden is situated behind one of the former canonical houses of Wells, now Wells & Mendip Museum.

Since the autumn of 2019 a dedicated group of volunteers has totally renovated and reconstructed the garden, transforming it into a space that now truly complements the building it serves. The works have included: n Thinning out or removing overgrown trees, shrubs and weeds. n Installing rebuilt terracing and replanting the raised beds. n Planting fruit trees, roses, shrubs and other perennial plants. n Creating numerous (sociallydistanced) seating areas with south facing views of Wells Cathedral.

Call for volunteers to join carnival team WELLS Carnival President Maurice Day is hoping that Wells Carnival will return bigger and better than ever in 2022 after this year’s Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnivals were cancelled for the second year running.

But he said that more Wells committee members are desperately needed to help ensure the event’s future success.

“We need to come out next year, as do the clubs, with a bigger, better effort than ever,” he said.

He added, though, that more people are needed to join the Wells organising committee, which is now down to just four members. Maurice would like to get it back up to eight to ten people, including somebody who could take on the treasurer role and somebody the secretary role.

“We’re in dire straits – we need help,” he said.

“If we could recruit ideally another half a dozen people then

They are ready to teach anybody that wants to come in. It’s not hard work, just dedication really at the end of the day.”

The decision to call off the carnivals was taken following a meeting of the Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnival Association (SCGFCA) comprising the seven carnival towns (Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea, Weston-superMare, North Petherton, Shepton Mallet, Wells and Glastonbury) and the three organisations which represents the entries (Bridgwater Gangs & Features, Mid Somerset Gangs & Features, and the Associates).

David Churches, SCGFCA secretary, said: “It was an extremely hard decision for us to make, but in the current financial climate and with so much uncertainty still present in terms of the risk from the virus, we felt this was the most sensible option for us all.

“Time is not on our side for our carnivals which are held in

November, and the lockdown restrictions over the past 12 months have seriously limited the fundraising opportunities for our towns, carnival clubs and walking groups.

“When this is combined with the ongoing social distancing arrangements, there is very little chance in raising the necessary monies needed to put on such spectacular events or indeed building the amazing entries we have become accustomed to over the years.”

The carnivals attract tens of thousands of spectators and raise a huge amount of money for charities and good causes.

Mayor of Wells Philip Welch cuts a ribbon in the garden at Crandon Springs as staff toast the opening of the care home

New care home welcomes first residents CRANDON Springs, the new care home on Glastonbury Road, Wells, has opened its doors and welcomed its first residents.

Mayor of Wells Philip Welch cut two ribbons, one at the front of the building and one in the garden, to officially open the Barchester Healthcare home in April.

Crandon Springs provides bespoke residential, dementia and respite care, and offers

home-cooked meals, a cafe, a cinema room and a hair and beauty salon.

There is a choice of daily activities on offer, and a dedicated minibus for day trips.

General Manager, Natalie Deverall, said: “We are delighted our home is now open. Our residents are at the heart of everything we do at Crandon Springs, and we look forward to welcoming them and delivering

best-in-sector personalised care.

We take pride in really getting to know each of our residents to provide tailored care and support, ensuring dignity and choice in every aspect of daily life.”

Rigorous infection control measures have been put in place, with regular coronavirus testing of both residents and staff.

Barchester Healthcare say that they are making their homes

as safe as possible, and will ensure that all new residents and staff are vaccinated before moving in or working in their homes.

In-person visits to Crandon Springs may be permitted for those who are considering care for themselves or for a loved one, in line with government and public health guidance, and all infection control protocols must be followed.

Freshly baked treats handed out to say thank you STAFF from Crandon Springs have taken to the streets to say thank you for the warm welcome they have received from the local community.

The team included Home Services Advisor, Bethany Chattwood and Head Chef, Rafal Pietrzyk, who went out delivering freshly baked treats to local businesses in and around Wells including the emergency services and St Cuthbert’s Junior School.

The fresh bakes included Easter Biscuits, Battenberg cakes, Chocolate Eclairs and Viennese Whirls.

Nest monitored for first signs of cygnets A CLOSE eye is being kept on the eggs laid by Bishop’s Palace swan Grace for signs of when they might hatch.

Grace is thought to have laid at least six eggs in her nest at the end of March, and has been incubating them over the past few weeks. The incubation period usually lasts for around five weeks.

People can try to spot any cygnets emerging on the Palace’s

popular Swan Cam, which is trained on the nest and runs 24 hours a day.

Last year, Grace decided to make her nest on an island in the middle of the Palace Moat, next to a public footbridge.

Luckily, as the Gardens were closed due to lockdown, she was not disturbed in this location, but this year, Palace staff were keen to encourage her to return to the safer location alongside the Moat, by the Palace’s office door.

The Palace gardeners left some tempting foliage near this location, and Grace and partner Gabriel decided to construct their nest in the preferred spot.

The Bishop’s Palace Garden Festival returns this year to celebrate its sixth year. The event takes place from July 2-4, when the Gardens will be at their best with dramatic summer colour and the evocative fragrance of roses.

Festival speakers will include Roy Lancaster, John Horsey, Claire Greenslade and James Cross. The South Lawn will be filled with stalls including nurseries, food and drink, garden gadgets, gifts, sculpture and more, and there will be live music, hands-on demonstrations, workshops, flower installations and garden tours. Stones will enhance city’s unique mosaic

A DRAMATIC surround is planned for the Wells in Mosaic.

This will not only enhance the beautiful artwork – a six-metre diameter mosaic detailing some of the history and highlights of the city, to be sited eventually at Wells Recreation Ground – but also literally ‘sets in stone’ the names of the organisations, people and businesses who have made significant contributions to the development of this unique project.

The team supporting mosaic artist Ruth Ames-White has expressed its gratitude to Andy Vallis, editor and publisher of the Wells Voice, who has supported the project from its beginnings. A spokesperson for the WiM team said: “Andy has been with us all the way; he has been very generous with editorial space and helped us to promote the project and to keep the community of Wells

Andy recently called at Ruth’s studio to see the blue lias stone which means that the publication will be part of the project in

feature for residents and visitors to engage with and admire.

Sponsoring a stone seemed like a good way of helping the project along.”

Local stone carver, Andy James, has been commissioned to carve the stones and each one is designed and made to order.

Different size stones are available for each level of donation, starting from £250.

There are many other ways of contributing to the mosaic – by sponsoring elements of the map (your road, for instance) or one of the 32 ‘windows’ or ‘quatrefoils’, or a building, or a tree in the Palace Fields.

Something to suit everyone; and an opportunity to be part of a unique piece of public art for future generations to admire.

Theatre festival to go ahead in October WELLS Theatre Festival has announced that the 2021 festival will go ahead. The organisers have taken the decision to move a scaled down programme to October when restrictions will be lifted, and live performances can take place.

A community production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will take place in the Cathedral in front of the visiting art exhibition – the Museum of the Moon.

As usual the production will be professionally directed and entirely cast by members of the local community. Casting is almost complete but Artistic Director Ros Johnson is still searching for someone to play the mischievous sprite Puck.

Ros said: “Our community actors and volunteers have kept positive and motivated in this incredibly challenging time by keeping in touch on Zoom and we are raring to get started on

rehearsals for the Dream. We are thrilled and excited to be performing for the first time inside the Cathedral. We are still searching for a Puck. Members of the Portway Annexe Community Group core team have proposed a potential ‘Vision’ for the building based on reviewing community needs and wishes from two previous public consultations.

We have also managed to have a look around the building with a local architect and have pulled together inspiration and ideas from similar styled ‘community hubs’ around the country.

We fully support the newly formed WCC Portway Annexe Committee to carry out a wider public consultation, hopefully using the Vision as a basis for starting discussions and getting

The Vision aims to offer something for everyone, both needs and some dreams.

We are convinced that the Portway Annexe could provide huge value to our community, and not be a burden on future council tax payers.

Return of register office to be discussed TALKS are to start over the potential return to Wells Town Hall of a register office for weddings.

At a meeting of Wells City Council’s finance committee on April 8, committee members voted to allow Town Clerk Steve Luck to open negotiations about the possibility of such a move with Somerset County Council Registrars.

The local register office for weddings is currently at Mendip Hub at Mendip District Council’s offices in Shepton Mallet. Mr Luck said that people getting married would save money if they did not have to pay for registrars to come to Wells, and that if the Shepton hub should close because of local authority reorganisation, the nearest register office would be Taunton or Yeovil.

He also raised the prospect of turning the Town Hall into a wedding centre with the creation

Wells Town Hall could be further developed as a wedding venue of a permanent wedding room, building on the Town Hall’s existing popularity as a wedding venue.

During public speaking time at the meeting, Chris Simons said he was “shocked” that costs in the council’s Portway Annexe business plan had increased by 41 per cent. He also questioned

the council’s approval at the extraordinary general meeting in March of the motion “to agree the purchase” of the Annexe, with no caveats about being subject to contract or surveys.

In the discussion that followed, it was said that the original business plan was based on a purchase price of £500,000,

although the final agreed price was £590,000, that the running costs of the Annexe are higher than envisaged, and that the business plan was a starting point, is a work in progress, and will be updated.

Mr Luck said that the minutes of the EGM do say that the purchase will be subject to a full survey and subject to the contract.

When the committee discussed the Annexe purchase as an agenda item, Mr Luck said that pre-approval had gone to the Secretary of State, and that if agreed, then an application can be made for the loan required.

He said that a building survey showed that overall the building is in a good state of repair, and that Somerset County Council had agreed to spend about £1,000 putting right some defects with the roof and guttering, and making sure that the building is watertight.

We have had several reports from Millers Gardens, North Road, St Thomas Street, Charter Way and recently West Street.

A catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device that reduces toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine into less-toxic pollutants by catalysing a redox reaction.

We are asking for your help to try and stop this happening in our area, if you see anyone working on a vehicle that you think is suspicious or under a vehicle then please call this into the police, the thefts are happening during the day and at night.

n Park your car in a locked garage when possible. Or a well-lit area. n For the catalytic converter to be stolen the thief will have to get under the vehicle to remove, using a cutting tool.

So parking close to walls and fences and kerbs will make the theft more difficult. n In a public car park consider parking alongside other vehicles facing your bonnet towards the wall as the converter is positioned at the front of your vehicle, which will also make it harder to be removed. n If your catalytic converter is bolted you can ask a garage to weld the bolts on. n Or purchase a cage clamp which is a device that locks around the converter. n Etch a serial number to the converter which would assist police if your converter was found and more than likely be harder for the thief to sell for scrap.

Chief Constable to leave role AVON and Somerset Police’s Chief Constable, Andy Marsh, will not be seeking to extend his contract when it expires at the start of July 2021.

CC Marsh said it had been the “honour of a lifetime” to lead a force he first joined as a new recruit in 1987.

After starting at Avon and Somerset Police, CC Marsh took on both operational and detective roles up to the role of Chief Superintendent and BCU Commander, first for South Bristol and then Somerset East.

He went on to serve as Assistant Chief Constable at Wiltshire Police and then Avon and Somerset Police, before being appointed Deputy Chief Constable and then Chief Constable at Hampshire Police, taking on the Chief Constable role at Avon and Somerset Police in February 2016.

He was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in 2018, the same year he was recognised by Women of the Future in its list of

Chief Constable Andy Marsh 50 ‘Kind Leaders’.

CC Marsh said: “To leave a force I first joined in 1987 has been a difficult decision to make, but I feel it is the right time for me to embark on a new challenge and for another person to take the helm.

“It’s been the honour of a lifetime to lead a force filled with officers, staff and volunteers who live and breathe our values of being a caring, courageous, inclusive and a learning-led organisation. LOCAL people in Wells have sprung into action to rewild their open spaces in parts of Millers Gardens, North Road, Kidder Bank Park and the footpath near Tor Hill Woods and possibly in other places too.

During lockdown many of us learnt to appreciate our local open spaces more than ever before, and Sustainable Wells is seeing a growing momentum of support for rewilding projects.

The simplicity of the concept is engaging, and throughout Wells people are taking a long hard look around them

and taking action where they can. Wildflowers are on trend. They don’t need much encouragement and willingly self-seed and bring beauty to wherever they decide to root.

They offer low maintenance green areas requiring minimal intervention with just a yearly cut in September to keep things ticking over.

wonderful open spaces for us all to enjoy. The additional benefit is people are more likely to walk and cycle using their local pathways, reducing pressure on roads and car parks. Seeing beauty all around must have a positive effect on our mental health as well.

People quickly rally round when things need to be done, whether it be supplying seeds and plants, planting or litterpicking. WhatsApp groups are forming and progress is celebrated on social media.

What joy there is in this – local people feeling empowered to make a positive difference.

Of course there are obstacles and people to persuade and fears to allay, but mostly it brings a buzz to previously neglected green areas in more ways than one.

Church’s angels will have company again

THE spectacular angels on the roof of St Cuthbert’s Church in Wells have been strangely lonesome over the last year.

But their long period of enforced solitude will soon be over as prayer, worshippers, music and visitors return to the church in May. A simple communion service will be held weekly on Wednesday mornings at 10am from May 5; and weekly 10am Parish Eucharists will recommence on Sunday, May 16.

From Monday, May 10, the church will be welcoming visitors every day between 10am and 5pm and, later in the year, tours up the tower to see amazing views over Wells will be available.

During the pandemic, St Cuthbert’s has had no income from visitors and the building and equipment have suffered from the long period of disuse.

One of the angels on the roof of St Cuthbert’s Church The church has just been awarded a grant from the DCMS Culture Recovery Fund for Heritage and because of this, the church is able both to top up the reserves which have been

depleted over the past year; and to fund necessary work such as giving the organ an overhaul, some urgent repairs to some of the stonework on the tower and making sure that the church is

thoroughly cleaned for visitors and worshippers.

Churchwarden Piers Rose said: “The pandemic has put the church in a difficult financial position and we are delighted and relieved to have this award.

“The grant will really help us to bring St Cuthbert’s back to life.”

Just in case there are people who have not yet discovered it, St Cuthbert’s Church is the vast, light-filled medieval parish church at the west end of Wells.

It has the tallest tower of any parish church in Somerset and is often assumed by visitors to be the Cathedral.

Going into the church, visitors are always struck first by the glorious painted angel roof and then by the calm. It is known as a wonderful place to spend time, drinking in the serenity of centuries and absorbing the peaceful atmosphere.

Man due in court after bank protest A MAN was arrested after daubing the windows of a Wells bank with fake oil and gluing himself to the floor inside.

The Barclays Bank branch in Market Place was forced to close while the windows were cleaned and the man was removed.

Dr Ben Buse, a member of Christian Climate Action, was charged with causing a public nuisance and with criminal damage.

He is due to appear at Yeovil Magistrates’ Court in May. He took the action on April 1 as part of Money Rebellion, a global day of action challenging the world’s banks to stop investing in climate and ecological breakdown.

It followed a demonstration

by XR Wells targeting HSBC and Barclays branches in Wells that saw protesters hold crime scene tape and placards to highlight what they say is the ecocide as a result of bank funding policies.

Dr Buse said: “I put fake oil on the bank as a symbol of the investments in fossil fuels which are betraying life, the planet and our future.

“Let’s demand banks wash themselves of fossil fuels and pray that they may serve

life rather than profit from destroying life.”

A Barclays spokesperson told Wells Voice: “Our priority is to ensure the health and safety of our colleagues and customers and we worked hard to get the branch open as soon as we possibly could.

“We have made a commitment to align our entire financing portfolio to the goals of the Paris Agreement, with specific targets and transparent reporting, on the way to achieving our ambition to be a net zero bank by 2050.

We believe that Barclays can make a real contribution to tackling climate change and help accelerate the transition to a lowcarbon economy.”

A police spokesperson said: “A 35-year-old man has been charged with one count of causing a public nuisance and one count of criminal damage following an incident at Barclays Bank in Market Place, Wells, on April 1, 2021.

“Benjamin Buse, of Wells Road, Rodney Stoke, Cheddar, has been released on unconditional bail to appear at Yeovil Magistrates’ Court on May 11.”

STAMP Duty is a Government tax which some buyers have to pay on the acquisition of a property. Stamp Duty Land Tax was introduced by former Chancellor George Osborne – and can now be very complicated.

We have had a busy period since the introduction of the Stamp Duty Land Tax holiday in July 2020, as there are large savings to be had and lots of clients are understandably keen to take advantage of this. We now have another year of change in Stamp Duty Land Tax terms since new rules introduced in the March budget.

The current residential SDLT holiday (and suspension of firsttime buyer relief) will end on June 30, 2021. For a normal buyer of a dwelling whose effective date (usually the completion date of the purchase) is between July 8, 2020, and June 30, 2021, SDLT is reduced by up to £15,000. On normal purchases of a dwelling, no SDLT is payable on prices up to £500,000.

From July 1 to September 30, 2021, there is a second, different holiday which sees SDLT reduced by up to £2,500, and first time buyer relief will return. On normal purchases of a dwelling, no SDLT will be payable on prices up to £250,000.

At the same time the higher rate of Stamp Duty Land Tax for purchases of second properties or rentals (where it is not a replacement of a main residence) will continue.

On October 1, the rates prior to July 8, 2020, will return.

In addition we have a new surcharge from April 1, 2021, a “nonresident surcharge”. This means during 2021 there will be 19 different rates of SDLT which can apply in different scenarios.

From April 1 a two per cent non-resident surcharge is applied.

Non-resident surcharge applies to purchases of a dwelling or dwellings (or interests in one or more dwelling),

not to any other type of property.

Non-resident surcharge is based on residence, not nationality, and if only one of a joint buyer is non-resident, the surcharge will still apply.

This surcharge can also apply to companies too. Individuals (rather than companies) are treated more generously as individuals can reclaim the non-resident surcharge if they become UK resident after paying the surcharge on completion, subject to certain rules.

An individual is “UK resident” for the purposes of non-resident surcharge if the person has been present in the UK on “at least 183 days during any continuous period of 365 days that falls within the relevant period”.

The good news for individuals coming here to live is that, although they have to pay non-resident surcharge if they have not lived in the UK for the required 183 days before completion, they can qualify as UK-resident after the effective date and reclaim the surcharge usually by showing 183 days’ UK residence in the 365 days after completion. There are strict time limits with regard to this reclaim, so it is important to be aware of these.

At the same time, multiple dwelling relief continues. If you are considering buying a property which comprises two or more dwellings, please talk to us as there may be a substantial saving in Stamp Duty to be had. There are strict criteria for a claim here, which HMRC can look carefully at, due to the large savings in Stamp Duty Land Tax. The above is a very brief summary of recent changes in Stamp Duty Land Tax and is not exhaustive. If you have a few hours to spare, you can see that by looking at the HMRC Stamp Duty manual.

The fairs will get through as they always do With this year’s May Charter Fair having been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, Richard Green relates some anecdotes from past fairs “THEY don’t dance on the table tops do they?” enquired a former mayor attending the Showmen’s Guild luncheon.

“No, though dancing is allowed during the interval,” I replied, for such is the unique networking experience that it is enjoyed by councillors and officials from all over the West Country.

The following anecdotes, some amusing and some sobering, are from my involvement with the twiceyearly charter fairs in Wells, and go beyond all the fun of the fair.

“Drinks all round,” the late Albert Heal would proclaim, standing proud in his black coat and hat with his trademark cigar, if he had a good night’s business, and so they did back in the 1950s and 60s with successive benefit nights for the former Wells Cottage Hospital towards its extension.

It is not always the case

Richard Green and Tracy Rogers at a Showmen’s Guild Luncheon where Richard received an award for his services to the Wells Charter Fairs today with so much alternative entertainment, but at a recent November carnival fair, which normally has a lull during the parade, the fair was still in full flight, with Tracy Rogers completely selling out of food, while son Shaun was stuck in his pay box taking money as wife Krystal was literally running around collecting the cash on her big ride.

It’s the weather that is the villain of the piece, and the fair still goes on whatever the

elements throw at it, and I recall Albert Heal’s brother, Joe, the complete opposite in a long trench coat, with the rain literally running down his back.

Long-serving tenants, the stallholders have been coming equally as long, such as the famous John Smith and his subsequent families. While asking Philip Stevens how he gets his attraction lined up so correctly, he replied: “Look closely at that stone sett here and this other one, they both have little grooves that are almost inch perfect.”

Chalk for such matters, and the fabled World’s Fair newspaper, were regularly stocked by the late Alan Southwood at his newsagents, the Somerset Stationery Supplies, for the arrival of the fairs.

The fairs have had their ups and downs, but the worst is the obscene derogatory remarks the Showmen and their families suffer, including myself and my father one year. While looking back I kept replying by saying “sir”, though it was Shaun Rogers who quietly moved his lorry up,

then all of a sudden put his lights on, and that and the tooting of horns saw this stereotype racist quickly depart.

For the travelling Showmen, theirs is literally a business on wheels, and there is still an underbelly of our society, including here in Wells, that lack understanding, education and knowledge of Britain’s living heritage.

My saddest moment was leaving the pay box of the Dodgems of Jimmy Rogers, who was then severely ill, and holding my hands with both of his. “Look after the fairs, and look after my family,” he said, and with deep breaths and tears in my eyes, I closed the pay box door, knowing that would be the last time I would see him.

The fairs have survived two world wars, the Depression and recession and will get through the Covid-19 pandemic as it did with the Black Death, and hopefully on Saturday, May 7, 2022, the May Charter Fair will be back, complete with the 30th anniversary of the civic opening of the fair which I instigated back in 1992.

Advice for tenants to prevent eviction PEOPLE who rent their home and are behind with rental payments could be at risk of eviction when the current ban on most evictions is lifted on May 31.

The government introduced the ban during the pandemic and extended it several times to protect people whose livelihoods had been affected.

Recent research by Citizens Advice shows that half a million private renters in the country are currently behind on rent, with the average amount owed being more than £700. The same report also found that tenants who live in properties that are badly maintained may be at risk of ‘retaliatory eviction’ by their landlord if they make a complaint.

Ian Byworth, CEO of Citizens Advice Mendip, said: “It’s a very worrying time for tenants in

Here are some key tips from Ian and his team: 1. Make rent payments a priority.

2. If you’re in arrears: don’t ignore it, otherwise it will only get worse. It could also make

it more difficult to get another tenancy in the future.

3. Check you owe what you’re being asked to pay: look at the payments you’ve made from your own records and compare them to your landlord’s rent book or statement. If you have any benefits paid direct to your landlord, check with the council or Department for Work and Pensions how much has been paid.

3. Make an affordable payment plan: speak to your landlord and explain your situation. See if you can agree a realistic repayment plan and put it in writing.

4. Check your benefit entitlement: if you’re not currently receiving benefits, check your entitlement to top up your income. If you’re already receiving Universal Credit or other benefits, find out whether

you’re getting the right amount or whether you can get part of your benefits paid towards your arrears. You may also be eligible for a ‘discretionary housing payment’ from your local council if you’re unable to pay your rent.

5. If you do receive notice to quit from your landlord: immediately contact Mendip District Council Housing Options on 0300 300 8588 for advice on how to avoid becoming homeless.

Focus on health with Bluebird Care

Chance to have say on recycling service MENDIP residents are being asked for their views on the expanded recycling service which has been running since October.

Somerset Waste Partnership and its contractor SUEZ want to hear what residents think about the Recycle More service in an online survey at www. somersetwaste.gov.uk/tellus It asks some simple questions about how people are finding the expanded recycling service and how it has changed their recycling habits.

Paper copies have also been sent to a random sample of 1,000 households in the district.

The closing date for online response is Friday, April 30.

The new service added plastic pots, tubs and trays to weekly collections, along with cartons such as Tetra Pak and small household electrical items and batteries.

As more waste can now be recycled, rubbish is collected every three weeks instead of every two.

What are common symptoms of mental illness?

Most people will feel low, anxious or irritable at some point in their lives. But if you have several symptoms at the same time, this could mean you have a mental illness. Especially if you have had them for some time.

Your symptoms might be having a significant effect on your day-to-day life. It could also be a sign that you are experiencing mental illness. The following symptoms could be signs of mental health problems. l Being anxious and irritable. l Having a low mood. l Finding it difficult to concentrate or remember things. l Sleeping less or too much. l Changes in your mood. l Finding it difficult to manage everyday life, eg. preparing food and washing regularly. l Feeling teary. l Becoming suspicious or paranoid. l Becoming isolated and withdrawn. l Having suicidal thoughts. l Believing that your family and friends want to do you harm. l Believing that people or organisations are out to get you. l Experiencing hallucinations.

This means sensing things that other people don’t, this can include seeing and hearing things. l Believing that you have special

powers or are on a mission. l Excessive spending and problems managing your money. l Having flashbacks or nightmares after a traumatic event.

These feelings can often be distressing and hard to cope with.

But with the right support and help you can make positive steps towards recovery.

What help can I get?

Getting help as early as possible is a good idea if you’re worried about your mental health. The sooner you get help and treatment, the quicker you’ll start to recover.

What help can my GP give me?

You can visit your GP to discuss your options for help and treatment. GPs are experienced in dealing with mental health problems, so try to be open about how you have been feeling.

Service for nurses in running for award MARIE Curie Nurses in Somerset have benefited from the organisation for them of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by SPAR South West.

Now the innovative PPE Click & Collect Service has been shortlisted for the 2021 Business Charity Awards Best Covid-19 Partnership, having delivered more than one million pieces of PPE to Marie Curie Nurses working on the frontline during the pandemic.

Marie Curie Nurses have relied on PPE to continue delivering vital care to dying people, with and without coronavirus, throughout the pandemic.

SPAR South West has helped the charity to deliver the large quantities of PPE needed to their frontline staff by transporting PPE around the region and enabling nursing staff to pick it up from their local SPAR store, including in Wells.

A SPAR store owner, Barbara Clements, hands a PPE parcel to Marie Curie Healthcare Assistant Liz Marshall Across the South West, Marie Curie Nurses use an average of 21,000 pieces of PPE a week.

Thanks to South West SPAR wholesaler Appleby Westward, Marie Curie Nurses have been able to collect their PPE,

including face masks, aprons, gloves, visors, goggles and hand sanitiser, from their nearest SPAR shop.

Since May 2020: n More than one million pieces of PPE have been delivered safely to Marie Curie Nurses. n More than 45,000 day and night nursing shifts have been able to take place for more than 2,400 patients. n More than 130,000 nursing hours have been protected thanks to SPAR’s support.

Marie Curie Healthcare Assistant Liz Marshall, from the South West Nursing Service, has worked for the charity for 11 years. She said: “It’s a privilege to care for people at the end of life and support families across the South West, especially during these difficult times.

“PPE has been vital for us to continue working during the pandemic. Before the help of SPAR South West, we were

depending on our volunteers and our own nurses to count out the equipment needed and drive it miles. Now, I can pop into my local SPAR store and pick it up.

I’ve even been able to do a bit of shopping at the same time.

“At a time when coronavirus has had, and continues to have, a devastating impact on our fundraising, this initiative has helped the charity save vital funds. So, on behalf of the nursing service, I would like to say a big thank you to SPAR for making this possible.”

Exhibition will reveal lives behind numbers THE Friends of Mendip Hospital Cemetery play a very important role in the history of Wells, looking after the peaceful and beautiful space where nearly 3,000 patients and staff of the Somerset and Bath Pauper Lunatic Asylum are laid to rest, their graves marked with a simple numbered iron marker.

During lockdown, the cemetery and Wells & Mendip Museum have worked together to research the stories of the names and faces behind the numbers.

In an exhibition due to start at the museum on Saturday, June 5, for the very first time people will be able to see the photographs and histories of some of those staff and patients, to give them back an identity and to explain the work of the asylum.

It will also dispel some of the myths around the institution, which in Wells, thanks to inspirational doctors like Dr

Robert Boyd, had very positive and forward thinking practices in the treatment of mental health.

Both the Friends and the museum would also like to ask for volunteers to support the excellent and essential work of the museum and the cemetery, which enables them to play important roles in the history of the city of Wells and the county of Somerset.

‘United in grief’: tributes to Prince Philip LOCAL figures have paid tribute to His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, after his death on April 9 aged 99.

The Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Rt Rev Peter Hancock, expressed his sadness at news of the Duke of Edinburgh’s death. In a statement with the Rt Rev Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton, he said: “On behalf of the Diocese of Bath and Wells and the people of Somerset, Bishop Ruth and I would like to express our sorrow at the news of the death of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.

“Prince Philip was greatly respected, and well known and loved for his wide range of interests. He had an immense dedication to public service and he approached everyone he met and every duty he engaged in with cheerfulness and good humour.

“On the few occasions I have been fortunate to meet him I was impressed by his depth and breadth of knowledge on a huge range of subjects, and his commitment to duty. We thank God today for his long life and his dedicated service.

“His loss will of course be felt most heavily by Her Majesty the Queen and his family and we remember them in our prayers today and in the coming days and weeks.”

There was a service of Choral Evensong in Wells Cathedral on April 16 to give thanks for the life of the Duke of Edinburgh and his more than 70 years of service to the Queen, the UK, and the Commonwealth.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS U3A WELLS u3a is building up to a national day for u3a (university of the third age) on Wednesday, June 2. We are organising a stall at the market where people will be available to give information on all the groups you can join.

A recipe book compiled and designed by members of tried and tested recipes will be launched and on sale for only £5. Come and have a chat to the people in the u3a sashes at our bunting bedecked stall.

Meanwhile groups are meeting again in a Covid-safe environment: Petanque Group 1 We started play again in glorious sunshine and played again soon afterwards in wintry blizzards.

We have started on both pistes with a maximum of six players on each to comply with the ‘Rule of 6’ and are able to maintain social distancing etc to comply with Government directives, now hoping for improving weather and further relaxation of rules so that we can invite a few others on our waiting list.

Petanque Group 2 On April 1 two groups of six smiling faces arrived at the football club ready for action.

(No, it’s not a recently formed u3a football group!) We made our way to the petanque pistes and were actually able to exchange news face to face – at a permitted distance of course – before engaging in a ‘battle of the sexes’ competition which ended in a draw. A great start to being unlocked.

We’re looking forward to the summer when maybe, just maybe, we can all sit together with a refreshing cup of tea and biscuits at half time. Once this is all over, we will have space for some new members. Currently we are reading The Beekeeper of Aleppo, and then going on to a classic, The 39 Steps.

This bit of fun has a profoundly serious purpose as it raised £334, money that will support Oxfam’s work with poor people in the poorest communities, helping to provide good harvests, proper hygiene, decent sanitation, food on the plate, clean water in the bucket, a roof over your head, a place for women in decision-making in Syria, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Yemen and so many more countries.

Ann, Jeanne, Chris and Sue are planning for u3a day on June 2 committee with Zoom and using the internet to keep us in good heart. We have been reading mostly fiction with established modern and not so modern writers, seasoned with The Wilding and The Salt Path for variety.

En Francais Group The En Francais group is still going strong. We meet, via Zoom, the second and fourth Wednesday in the month. We can’t wait to get back to our normal meetings and share coffee and cakes. We probably will go back to meeting alternate Wednesdays when things go back to normal. The group is full at the moment as we are restricted by numbers to ensure everyone has an opportunity to speak, read and translate within the meeting time.

Italian Conversation Our Zoom meetings have continued throughout the winter on Zoom, with lively and interesting topics such as talking about our favourite local walks; places where we have lived; our favourite films; and objects from our past and their memories. Whilst grateful for the ability to keep in touch using Zoom, there is nothing like being able to meet, and with the new relaxation of the Rule of 6 again, four of us met at the Bishop’s Palace on April 1 for coffee and a chat about a book of our choice.

The weather was “fresca”– ie “chilly” – but the conversation and friendship was rivitalizzante.

Ann Brown and group leaders MID SOMERSET OXFAM GROUP MID Somerset Oxfam Group was amazed and delighted to receive 53 entries to its recent Limerick Quest. What a poetic county we are.

The winning entry was a modern and very topical limerick from John Davis: A virus called Covid-19 Went into a factory canteen “I’ll have hedgehog and mash, I’m fed up with the hash, I need a new spikey protein.”

Second prize went to Peter Janes and third prize to Gilly Baker.

The Quest’s judge, David Cloke, congratulated the many splendid entries covering such a variety of subjects. MSOG is determined to share the giggles and downright belly laughs inspired by all the limericks and will be bringing them together in a little booklet that we will be publishing very soon.

Alfred Noyes MID-SPRING and many people’s favourite month of the year.

Most things are in place in the garden and you can take time off and gather lilacs with Ivor Novello or yield to Alfred Noyes’ exhortation and go down to Kew (it isn’t far from London!). It is a time for romantic trivia. On a personal level I usually find that a compulsive urge emerges and instead of tackling the moss on the lawn or even tidying the beds I am overtaken by whimsy and embark on a sidetracking venture which I alone consider worthwhile.

Some time ago it took the form of changing the shape of our small suburban front lawn from a circle – such a cliche – into a hexagon. I couldn’t see hexagons being all the rage at Chelsea any time in the near future. Nevertheless hexagons did represent a geometrical challenge and my mathematics had always been an area of both weakness and mystery. I lean towards that simplistic view that in real life there is no such thing as algebra. However I did pride myself on an albeit tenuous grasp of geometry, probably because drawing was involved.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES from the nearby clump of Pampas Grass, I set to work. A certain amount of doubt and selfinterrogation began to creep in about the choice of implements but perseverance was the key I told myself. There was the old adage about having set the hand to the plough, do not readily sheath the sword.

I was quite prepared to face the odd enquiry from the inquisitive engineering neighbour as to whether I had my interior angles correct. Yes, I confidently answered – 120 degrees to be precise, more or less. Edges were cut, turf lifted, job almost completed. Then the window flew open. “Tea’s ready, and it’s a rhomboid!”

Now this was a little bit disheartening, but with a bit more off here and a straighter lateral there, I stood back and surveyed my handiwork.

Definitely a hexagon. Perhaps it would have looked better as a pentagon... No, a firm no, though it did look more like a 50p coin.

A brief count of the sides...

Seven, that’s a heptagon, and my shape had six sides even if my wife had to count them twice.

It was a pleasing enough shape, providing a much-needed sense of order in the shambolic structure of that part of the garden.

It remains so and much more personally satisfying to do than scraping bits of moss in all directions. It is more than whimsy. With the addition of a couple of dozen homegrown box balls the feature looks comfortable and friendly. It doesn’t show that aggressive modern trend and taste for the sharpest of angles wrought in concrete, steel and expensive quasi-marble ferociously waiting to wreak havoc on your veins.

Looking ahead there are already opportunities to go out and scout around for ideas for one’s own garden. For, however we strive to incorporate another’s scheme, the result is always different, unique and personal to ourselves alone and that is the joy of our gardens.

Pip Harwood WELLS WI THINGS are beginning to happen at last, with members meeting for outdoor coffee, and optimistically booking tickets for The Great Gatsby in the

The book and gardening groups have been busy; the photography group have been sharing images of Things In Threes, and the discussion group will be exploring Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility in any format: book or film(s). Volunteers at Wells Foodbank were pleased with the Easter donation which included home-made food and chocolate eggs alongside other treats.

We tentatively discussed the possibility of a celebration tea one Saturday afternoon in August and agreed this would be a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends who prefer not to join Zoom meetings.

We talked about this year’s subscriptions and confirmed that half of our £44 goes to National and County WI, leaving Wells WI just under £22 from each member per year to cover all costs. Despite the shortfall in income caused by subscription collection being deferred until April, Wells WI has managed to put on a packed programme of speakers and classes throughout lockdown. We have been more fortunate than some other WIs and thanks are due to our Treasurer Barbara for her excellent financial management.

Our speaker was Chris Jenkins, Wells Cathedral Head Guide, who told us about the Quire embroideries. Normally only able to show the tapestries to three or four people at a time, he said our group Zoom was a perfect opportunity to examine photographs in detail.

The embroidery project was started in the early 20th century and continued for decades, involving 107 women – and men – making individual panels, undeterred by wartime wool shortages. Chris showed us

stitching detail, how different coloured threads were combined to suggest shading, and how cleverly people had crafted three dimensional objects like olives and jewels.

He explained the symbolism in the banners behind the senior clergy’s seats. The Dean’s is a special shape and features ornate stonework. That of the Precentor (responsible for music and worship) includes King David’s harp, angels playing bells, choristers and musical notes; whilst that of the Chancellor,

responsible for learning, shows the animals associated with the four writers of the gospels.

The Treasurer’s shows the precious silver vessels and the Archdeacon’s the arms of Wells, and the seal of King John.

Chris pointed out examples of St Andrew’s cross, St Peter’s keys and St Paul’s sword. Other banners commemorate historical bishops. Bishop Kidder’s shows angels blowing winds from each corner as he was killed when a storm brought down the palace chimney in 1703. Bishop Peter Mews’ banner has cannons and pikes as he was involved in the 1685 Battle of Sedgemoor.

We finished with some photos of the altar frontals and vestments that were made in 2000 to commemorate the millennium, with Chris pointing out the tiny penguin stitched into the Trinity frontal – the favourite animal of the donors who funded it.

Most people still favour traditional funeral

‘DIRECT to cremation’ might appear trendy, but it’s not for everyone.

It is easy to be swept away with the latest fads and trends.

Perhaps we can forgive David Bowie for making ‘direct to cremation’ funerals fashionable as he didn’t want anyone at his funeral. ‘Direct to cremation’ is a funeral that has no service, no flowers, minister or celebrant and certainly no congregation.

Such funerals are an option to be considered where money is an issue or very few people are able to attend a service because of lockdown and travel restrictions.

Lack of available finance can sometimes be an important factor too.

However, given the choice, I still believe that most people see a final farewell as a way to recognise and honour someone’s life and the difference they made in ours.

Money hasn’t been a deciding factor. A ‘direct to cremation’

funeral costs somewhere between £997 and £1,499 and we have only delivered two such funerals.

Ninety-five per cent of our funerals have been traditional funerals. A hearse, limousine, flowers and order of service.

The cost of this can be anywhere between £2,995 and £4,495.

It’s true that the nature of funerals has changed. The government has limited the number of attendees at any service and this I am sure has created division amongst those who have been chosen to attend and those who have not.

However, with this restriction on the number of people allowed to be present and our newfound ability to handle Zoom and Facetime meetings we have seen increased interest in live broadcasting of services on YouTube and Facebook.

Many of us have friends and family living all over the world

so I think we will see increased demand for the use of Zoom-type technology in the future.

Crematoriums and churches are installing broadband and webcams, providing varying degrees of quality and viewpoint.

Surely this is a good thing if it allows relatives who are being shielded or friends who live elsewhere in the world to attend and pay their respects.

And maybe the trend towards ‘direct to cremation’ will increase here in Somerset as finances tighten after furlough ends. The jury is still out. What I am sure of is that our departure from this world will be just as it has always been. Respectful and with love.

For certain, the way those of us who are left behind say farewell opens up options we never imagined when we came into this world. Keeping your options is always a good thing.

Training nets target as cricket returns CRICKET WELLS Cricket Club are thankful for the return of cricket for seniors and juniors and have their fingers crossed for a full and uninterrupted season.

Thanks to the All Stars section led by Corinna and Eric Thompson and junior coaching led by Jack Moore, the Wells CC junior section is now bigger than ever and always welcomes new players. In 2020 Wells CC qualified an additional three coaches, and now in 2021 is able to offer more training sessions and matches than ever before.

“It’s absolutely fantastic that the club is able to have its most extensive junior programme yet but training facilities continues to be an issue and limits the amount of hard-ball practice the players can have,” said Wells CC Chairman Rachel Richards.

‘The nets are the original ones installed in 1995 and no longer meet ECB standards’ installed when the club moved to South Horrington in 1995 and unfortunately no longer meet ECB standards and need to be completely replaced.

“Wells CC achieved planning permission to build new training nets at their ground in South Horringtong in 2020 but Covid-19 significantly impacted

the club financially and has set us further away from achieving our target.”

Wells CC, with the support of Sport England, have launched a Crowdfunder to raise £15,000 – Sport England have confirmed that they will pledge £4,500 towards the target.

“We’ve been overwhelmed

and thankful of the support so far from our donators as well as local businesses who have donated rewards which can be purchased by donators to help us achieve our target,” said Rachel.

“Wells Golf Club have generously donated a pay-asyou-go membership which is currently being raffled on the Crowdfunder site. It’s great to have the support from our neighbours in sport and hopefully the lucky winner will have even more luck on the course this summer.

“Double-Gate Farm B&B & Tea Rooms continue to support despite difficult times by kindly donating an afternoon tea for two, The Bishop’s Palace have donated two tickets to the outdoor theatre, local sportswear business Boudavida have donated a gym bag and Nails by Amber Gray have donated some vouchers too. There really is something for everyone.”

Golfers making most of reopening of courses GOLF MONDAY, March 29, saw packed fairways at Mendip Golf Club as play resumed, and competitive golf returned in mid-April.

174 men competed in the April stableford held over the two weekend days. Division 1 was won by Matt Bendall with 39 points. Division 2 went to Trevor Messenger with 39 points.

Division 3 was won by Andrew Robinson with the competition best score of 40.

63 men played in the midweek stableford. Division 1 saw an outstanding 38 points from scratch golfer Tom Lowe.

Divison 2 was won by Simon Atkinson with 36. Winner of Division 3 was young Henry Lewer with 37 on count back.

39 Ladies played in an 18hole stableford with a further three playing a nine-hole event which was won by Sue Needham with 19 points. In the 18-hole contest Division 1 was won by Chris Down with 34 points, Division 2 went to Jo Espley

to bring their hip flask to drink a toast on the 1st tee, a good start to the round. 121 Seniors took part. The Trophy was won by Robert Earney with 41 points, three shots clear of the field. The Veterans Prize went to Les Kew with a fine 36 points on back 6.

While the club was closed for almost three months due to the Covid regulations, there was much going on behind the scenes. Some ash dieback trees were removed, the bunker renovation programme was completed, a new tee was built for the 8th, a lot of pathways were improved and some copses were thinned out.

Alex Todd, aged 28 and PGA qualified, has joined the professional team and will head up all aspects of the various coaching programmes at Mendip.

It is fair to say that one aspect of the club that has not hit the high standards it has been looking for in recent years has been the catering. However, the club has announced that a new franchising arrangement for the bar and catering has been completed and this has been awarded to Steve Morris, an existing club member. He has big plans, and these will be implemented as the relaxing of the Covid rules allow.
