Swan lantern cake-maker to star on TV LOCAL cake artist Zoë Burmester is one of the cake designers soon to be seen on Channel 4’s Extreme Cake Makers.

Wells-based Zoë, an awardwinning cake artist and former film set stylist, has been filming for Series 4 of the TV show since January.

Some of the filming took place in the Bishop’s Barn, Wells, featuring a swan lantern cake that Zoe made after being commissioned for the Wake Up Wells Lantern Parade earlier this year.

The cake was especially demanding as it had the added complication of being illuminated to match the other lanterns that parade-goers had made.

“Working on Extreme Cake Makers has been challenging but huge fun,” said Zoë.

“It is a real privilege to design cake sculptures for local events and help celebrate local people and businesses, plus have that process filmed so viewers can glimpse behind the scenes of these ‘Extreme’ cakes.”

Zoë’s Sugar Street Studios produce unique edible sculptures for milestone birthdays, special anniversaries or corporate events in Somerset and beyond.

Sally Billington, owner of The Litton pub at Litton, near Wells, also commissioned Zoë to create a show stopping cake for The Litton’s 70s themed second birthday party.

The Litton brands itself as “traditionally untraditional”, and

its birthday celebration certainly lived up to this; a raucous 70s themed party complete with the UK’s top-voted ABBA tribute band, a light up LED dance floor, retro 70s cocktails and canapés… and a whopper of an interactive cake that stood at 4ft high and weighed over 75 kilos. All will be revealed when the Extreme Cake Makers episode is broadcast.

The series is currently airing on Channel 4, weeknights at 5.30pm. Look out for Zoe and her cakes from May.

Runners book places on start line PLACES are filling up in this year’s Wells Fun Run that takes place on Sunday, May 26.

The 10k, 5k, 3k, 1.2k and Junior races are all back for 2019.

The 10k will once again be part of the Somerset Series.

The newest race, the 3k for 10- to 12-year-olds, helps to bridge the gap between the 1.2k and 5k races. It was a big success in 2017and 2018 and the route is unchanged for 2019, starting in the Market Place, initially following the same route as the 5k and 10k races before turning left just after Palace Farm,

heading back across the fields and along the Moat to the main finish line.

The Junior race will start from Wells Recreation Ground, finishing at the main finish line.

As usual, there are individual trophies, team and corporate prizes to be won. There are also free photos for 5k finishers courtesy of Charles Whitton Photography.

Enquiries continue after man’s death AVON and Somerset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team continues to make enquiries into the death of Jonathan Roper.

The 34-year-old died following a disturbance at an address on Merlin Drive in Wells on Saturday, March 23.

A forensic post-mortem examination has since determined the cause of death was a stab wound.

Ten people have so far been arrested, six in connection with the death and four others for other offences linked to the incident.

Of the six arrested in connection with the death, three have been released with no further action taken, two have been released under investigation while a third has been released on bail.

The four arrested for other offences have all been released under investigation.

Senior Investigating Detective Chief Inspector James Riccio said: “We’d like to reassure the local community we continue

Approval for 64-bed care home MENDIP District Council has approved the building of a care home at the former Nutricia site on Glastonbury Road.

Barchester Health Care anticipates employing 75 people

at the two-storey care home, which will have 64 single ensuite bedrooms, day rooms, a cinema, hair and beauty and an activity room. The care provider hopes to open it early next year.

Signs of new start for King’s Head pub From page 1 someone to take on the lease.

A spokesperson from Star Pubs & Bars said: “The King’s Head, Wells, is in need of refurbishment and we want to invest in it to create a great pub for the local community, retaining the traditional features and character of this beautiful building whilst creating new areas for coffee, dining, with an emphasis on locally sourced food, and a beautiful courtyard garden.

“We are currently in the planning process and look forward to sharing more details of the refurbishment in due course.

“We are looking to recruit an experienced operator who can work with us on this vital investment programme to create an outstanding pub. The King’s Head is in a great location on the High Street and presents an excellent business opportunity for the right operator who shares our vision.”

The application to Mendip District Council is for one fascia sign, one hanging sign, four hoarding signs, two frosted window vinyls and two wall signs (with illumination), to the front and side of the building.

In a statement with the planning documents, the company said: “This scheme has been proposed as the existing

App designed to make parking easier THE launch of a new cashless parking system means drivers will no longer have to pay a fee to use their mobile phone to park in Wells.

Drivers can use the PayByPhone app to pay for parking across Mendip, in Wells, Frome, Street, Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet.

They will also be able to receive a free reminder of when their parking time slot ends, while with the Extend-FromAnywhere feature, users can extend their parking time from their mobile devices, wherever they are.

Haylee Wilkins, Neighbourhood Services Group Manager for Mendip District Council, said: “All drivers in Mendip now have the option to go fully cashless and enjoy the advantages of the services PayByPhone offers. They don’t have to carry cash or cards anymore or to worry about

PayByPhone was launched in Mendip on April 15. The app’s Maps feature allows drivers to locate parking areas before they set off, and pin their vehicle location onto the map once they

have parked. The Nearby Parking feature provides drivers with the closest PayByPhone parking location number once they have parked.

Hannah Fuller, operations director for PayByPhone UK, said: “We are very excited to launch PayByPhone in Mendip.

Mobile parking payments have many advantages for people who live and work in the area and to the local authority. Not only does it make the parking experience more convenient and hassle-free when going cashless, but it also greatly reduces vandalism and the cost of maintaining pay-anddisplay machines.”

PayByPhone has been present in the UK since 2011. It was recently launched in Sedgemoor, and is due to go live in Somerset West and Taunton at the end of April.

Mystery at heart of wintry scene in Wells EARLIER this year, as a birthday gift for her husband, Wells resident Carri Baxendale bought an arresting photograph at the A2 Gallery in High Street.

The picture was taken by Wells photographer Jonathan Jelfs, and features a wintry Wells Cathedral with a lone figure walking towards the camera.

“The image immediately draws the eye and mesmerises the viewer with the magnificent ghostly facade of the Cathedral in the winter gloom,” said Carri.

Jonathan himself remembers the moment he took the picture well. “It was Thursday, March 1, 2018, and Storm Emma was sweeping across the South West of England,” he said.

“I look forward to these occasions when the weather contributes something dramatic to a familiar scene. Sure enough Wells Cathedral was gradually fading in the snow storm.

“I noticed some children

THE South West Fireplaces showroom in Priory Road, Wells, is about to celebrate its first anniversary.

“We have had a very successful year increasing sales by 40 per cent in 2018 and we have now taken on more staff and are looking to recruit some more fitters to help with the workload,” said managing director Alex Gooby, who set up South West Fireplaces in Bishop Compton ten years ago.

Alex is a former Wells Cathedral School student, and plays rugby for Tor 1st XV, in Glastonbury.

He has fitted more than 500 stoves in and around Somerset in the past decade, including for some high-profile customers.

“Without mentioning any names we have had a lord in the showroom last week and we are currently fitting three stoves in a well-known local MP’s farmhouse,” he said.

Among them are long-serving councillors Roy MacKenzie, Colin Price, Maureen Brandon and Gordon Wilson. Roy and Gordon have served for eight years in total and Maureen and Colin for 20. All four are past mayors, and Maureen was mayor twice.

The local elections take place on Thursday, May 2. In this area, voters will be electing councillors for Wells City Council and Mendip District Council.

There were not enough candidates standing in any of the four St Cuthbert Out Parish Council wards to make an election necessary, so all those nominated have been elected unopposed.

I am a local man born and bred.

My primary and secondary education was within the city. On leaving school I was employed at the former EMI, and became the third generation of my family to carry on a newsagents, at 31 St Cuthbert Street (formerly Queen Street). I was forced to close the business in 2008 with the changing patterns of the newspaper industry, and it is now let as a successful coffee house.

I am very concerned about climate change and all things ecological. I believe that we can do so much more at the local level to raise awareness of the need to do things differently around sustainability, waste and carbon footprint. We have made a start in Wells, but more Green voices on the council would stand up for the priorities we now need in the face of our climate emergency.

Paul believes in the importance of seeing ourselves as part of nature. Mainstream parties are taking wrong directions in so many policy areas, placing finance as the primary measure of successful community.

Climate issues now urgently require us to think differently and prepare at scale for resilient, recycled, low-energy living. We can do so much more at the local level to influence and support a more constructive response.

I am standing as I want Wells City Council to become not only even more responsive to the needs of the people of Wells but also to take a lead on important issues such as planning. Harvey over 30 years has fought to improve facilities in Wells. He has led on improvements to the Town Hall. He was involved in the building of sports facilities at both the Leisure Centre and the Blue School. He organises the Children’s Folk Dance Festival.

Cast relish roles in community production THE Wells Theatre Festival, which will present another exciting programme of theatre and performance art this summer, has announced the casting for this year’s community production of William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, Much Ado About Nothing.

The play will be performed in front of the Cathedral and will be the centrepiece of this year’s festival, running from July 11-14.

Following the sell-out success of last year’s production of Romeo and Juliet, this year’s company is made up of a mix of returning stars and some new faces from among the residents of Wells and surrounding area.

Lee Housley, who played Sampson and Balthasar last year, has landed the leading role of Benedick alongside newcomer Jennie Harris as Beatrice.

Local resident and father of two, Lee studied Shakespeare at university. He said: “I love

I couldn’t wait for the Wells Theatre Festival to roll around for its second year. Ros, the director, does such a calm and meticulous job that she makes it easy for us.”

Jennie, who is 22, is from Bristol but grew up in Wells, and plans to move to London to study acting at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts.

Last year’s leading lady Beth Millward, aged 18, will play Hero, and another newcomer, Toby Heather, aged 20, will play Claudio.

Beth said: “Being cast as the lead role in Romeo and Juliet in last year’s festival was an extraordinary experience. The role was challenging in all areas but it was totally worth it. I met some lovely people and have grown friendships with those I was lucky enough to share the stage with.

“This year, I will be developing another leading role as Hero. This year’s festival will be bigger and better, and I cannot wait for another challenge, as I prepare for my future of hopefully becoming a professional actress.”

Toby, who works as a waiter, studied at Oxford Drama School.

He said: “I am looking forward to performing in front of the Cathedral because it opens theatre up to the public.”

In keeping with the time-honoured tradition of cross gender casting in Shakespeare’s plays, a number of the male roles will be taken by female cast members. Caroline Bruce, who played the Nurse in last year’s production, will take on the role of Dogberry, and Jenny Kingston, who played Lady Capulet, will play Don Pedro.

Jenny, an orthodontist based in Wells, said: “I played Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet last year. It’s addictive and as good as any dangerous sport as a stress reliever. I made new friends too.

“That’s why I’m back again.

So pleased to have been chosen for this intriguing role.”

Caroline, who is now parish consultant for the Anglican Diocese of Bath and Wells, has a background as a performer and a drama teacher. She said: “I am so delighted to be back for another year and excited to be playing Dogberry. He is a bumbling, self-satisfied local watchman, a wonderful comic role.”

Aim to equip new learning area HORRINGTON Primary School hopes to turn a recently completed outside learning area into a maths and science station.

Fundraising has begun to equip the three-sided wooden shelter in the school grounds with learning materials so it can be used to inspire and motivate the children.

The equipment includes items designed to get children actively learning through maths puzzles and games. They will also be

able to run their own weather station and learn more about the life cycles and habitats of insects with a bug hotel. A set of plant trays will help children to understand concepts such as pollination and photosynthesis.

Tesco in Wells has agreed to include the school in its Bags for Life fundraising scheme and the public will be able to vote for the school in store during May and June. The project with the most votes stands to win up to £4,000.

Spring show a firm favourite

WELLS Little Theatre’s spring show this year is Fiddler on the Roof, running from May 13-18 at 7.30pm each night.

Winner of nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964, Fiddler On The Roof has touched audiences world-wide ever since with its humour, warmth and honesty.

It includes beautiful, heartstopping music, including If I Were A Rich Man, Sunrise, Sunset and Matchmaker.

The brainchild of Broadway legends Jerome Robbins and Harold Prince, songwriters Jerry Brock and Sheldon Harnick, the story is set in the village of Anatevka in Imperial Russia in 1905 where life is as precarious as a ‘fiddler on the roof’.

In this tight-knit Jewish community lives Tevye, the poor milkman and his five daughters whom he attempts to protect in the face of changing social mores and growing anti-Semitism.

Green for go with wine refill scheme WE all know that wines are traditionally red, white or rose.

But in the City of Wells they have turned decidedly green following an eco-friendly initiative.

High street wine retailer Santé Wine has rolled out a scheme which allows customers to take their own bottle or container to the store to buy their wine. Recycled bottles are also available inside the shop where they can then be corked.

“We’re doing our bit for the environment,” said David Schroetter, owner of Santé Wine.

“I get 20/30-litre barrels from the vineyards, from all over Europe. And these barrels are 100 per cent recyclable. Allnatural wines, no added sulphite to it.”

Launched on April 13, the green initiative saw its first 15

litres of wine leave the store to an audience of eagerly awaiting customers. David says customers can go in to the wine shop for a glass of vino – Santé Wines holds a drinks licence – and then fill a bottle and take it home with them.

The initiative will save customers an average of 20 per cent per bottle over a standard vineyard price, but David reiterates that the significance of the eco initiative is about going green. With customers taking their own bottles or containers it saves over 16.5kg of glass for every barrel of wine sold, coupled with no need for printing paper labels.

£8.95 a bottle and a Grenache from Cotes du Luberon for £9.95. Plans are in place to add two more wines – a Cotes de Provence Rose and a Sangiovese from Palma, Italy – with more wines planned.

While the eco scheme is not expected to become the core of its business, Santé Wine feels it is important in these times for everyone to do their bit for the environment.

And we can surely all raise our glass to that sentiment…

Medieval merriment at Palace CHILDREN will be able to explore the tales and legends of medieval times at The Bishop’s Palace during the half-term holiday.

Unit recruiting for more volunteers ST John Ambulance is recruiting for new volunteers in Wells.

The local unit is looking for people to become first aiders or youth leaders, joining thousands of volunteers across the country.

The organisation says that its

It says the Wells unit is a friendly and inclusive team with volunteers from all walks of life, providing support at many local events in the Wells area including Wells Carnival.

Volunteers joining St John Ambulance have the opportunity to gain new skills and try out new experiences.

As well as the first aiders, other volunteers provide services such as youth leading with Badger or Cadet youth groups, or assisting logistics teams in getting the right equipment to the right locations.

No previous first aid or youth leadership experience is needed as training will be provided.

New High Sheriff talks of his hopes SOMERSET has a new High Sheriff after Johnnie Halliday took over from Denis Burn at the Legal Service held at Wells Cathedral in March.

Johnnie, now the Queen’s legal representative in the county, said: “This is a great honour and I look forward to serving all parts of Somerset and supporting all elements of the judiciary and police. I also want to learn about, encourage and recognise the many good causes and volunteers across our county.

“My particular focus will be to provide continuity with the great start that Denis Burn has launched via the Somerset Crimebeat Trust Unlocking Potential initiative. This is a proven programme from South Bristol and is aimed at 13- to 14-year-olds from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“The aim of Unlocking Potential is to encourage those who receive less support at home than their peers, to help them find pathways into apprenticeships. Working with schools, colleges and parents or guardians, the goal is to improve the self-confidence of this generally underperforming group and motivate them into finding rewarding futures.

Exhibition showcases calligraphy A MAJOR exhibition celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society has opened at Wells & Mendip Museum.

A Way With Words has on display almost 100 selected pieces of calligraphic and lettering work, in a variety of media, to show the huge range of ways to express words visually and beautifully.

Traditional manuscript painting and gilding can be seen alongside many other techniques, such as writing on metals or glass, work with nibs, brushes and other tools, paints,

inks and engraving, linocuts and digitally manipulated images.

This exhibition will be travelling to venues in the north, south, east and west of the country until September, and is in Wells until May 11.

Admission to the exhibition is free, and opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 10am5pm.

Charity fashion show raises nearly £800 THERE was music, lights and action at a St Margaret’s Hospice fashion show in March.

Jo Truman-Boal, the manager of the Wells St Margaret’s shop, who is herself an ex-model, had been saving clothes especially for the show and all the garments were on sale on the night.

The show took place at Ansford Academy in Castle Cary, when volunteers from the Ditcheat Players, CATS (Castle Cary & Ansford Amateur Theatrical Society) and Ansford Academy modelled the clothes – put together by stylist Natasha Musson, The Secret Stylist – in five scenes.

St Margaret’s community fundraiser Terena Gill said: “It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the wonderful items that get donated to the St Margaret’s shops and what can be achieved with a little imagination by using otherwise discarded garments. It was a

Cats charity seeks new recruits GLASTONBURY and Wells Cats Protection would love to hear from people who love cats and could spare some time to help the homeless cats in the area.

The small but busy branch covers Wells, Glastonbury, Street, Cheddar, Shepton Mallet and the surrounding villages, and always needs volunteers to help in a variety of ways.

Areas in which help is required include hands on cat work such as cat cuddling, transporting cats to foster pens

or picking up strays, as well as help with feral trapping in certain situations. Help on the administration side would be appreciated too, such as issuing neutering vouchers and help with fundraising activities. This is a way of helping for people who like cats but are allergic to their fur. More people are needed to work shifts in the charity shop in Street as well.

New chapter for entertainment venue WELLS businessman Kevin Newton is combining past and future with his new venture.

He and his team have transformed a building that has previously been a theatre, cinema and nightclub into a modern restaurant and bar, while keeping elements of its history intact.

Pillars Bar & Grill in Leigh Road, Street, opened in April and members of the Wells business community and organisations were among those invited to a preview evening on April 16.

As well as a wide range of food and drink, Pillars will offer live music, including a pianist, and a Jazz Brunch on Sundays.

“I wanted to preserve the historic building and return it to back to its former glory as an entertainment venue for the mid-Somerset area,” said Kevin.

Many people will remember the building as Envy nightclub, which closed its doors for the last time on December 31, 2016.

The building was originally built in 1920 for two local businessmen, Mr Voaks, a butcher, and Mr Hecks, the forerunner of the Hecks cider farm.

It started life as The Playhouse Theatre, and the original proscenium arch can still be seen in Pillars above what is now the piano deck, while the arched ceiling is an original pressed tin design.

The Playhouse Theatre eventually became the Playhouse Cinema, then Maxime’s Cinema, Maximes Nightclub, and, for 15 years, Envy.

Opportunity to be steward at contemporary art exhibition WELLS Art Contemporary (WAC) is holding its exclusive international exhibition of shortlisted works of art at Wells Cathedral from July 20 to August 11.

A MOTION calling on Wells City Council to declare a climate emergency was due to be considered at the full council meeting on April 25.

If adopted, the council would, among other measures, pledge to make the City of Wells carbon neutral by 2030, and assist residents in becoming more resilient to the impacts of global warming.

Climate campaigners demonstrated outside the Town Hall before the previous full council meeting on March 28 to stress the importance of taking action.

“It doesn’t really matter what Wells city councillors plan to do if they don’t first address the climate emergency,” said Wells county councillor Tessa Munt.

“Without definitive action

Eco-Cafe set to be repeated THE Sustainable Wells Pop-UpEco-Cafe on April 6 was judged such a success that it is going to be repeated on May 4, from 10am-noon.

The event took place at the Drawing Room in Heritage Courtyard, where there were books and magazines to borrow as well as a ‘Swap or Donate’ clothes rail.

April’s Freecycle event in Priory Road car park was the biggest yet, with lots of requests to run it more often. The next Freecycle will be on July 7 from 2.30pm-3.30pm.

People who have any questions about the climate change protests, or the climate emergency motion, will find some answers at the next Sustainable Wells regular gathering on May 13 in the Connect Centre from 7pm-9pm.

The group are showing part of the renowned film Demain, and there there will be a chance to learn first hand from those Wellensians who participated in the recent climate protests.

Discussion of environmental concerns MORE than 50 people gathered at St Thomas’ Church in Wells for the third in a series of Eco Church conferences across Somerset.

Delegates attended from as far apart as Axminster and Radstock, Taunton and Frome, and from Anglican, URC, Methodist and Baptist churches – rural and urban – representing a wide range of experiences and views.

“Eco Church is a scheme which helps churches of all denominations to measure their progress on integrating care for the environment into everything they do – from what kind of coffee cups they use, to what kind of energy they buy, to how they manage the churchyard, to what the children’s groups get up to,” said Caroline Pomeroy, Diocese of Bath & Wells environmental consultant.

“More and more churches are signing up for Eco Church to help them think through the Christian response to issues such as climate change, plastic pollution and loss of biodiversity, and start taking practical action.”

Those attending the Wells conference demonstrated that there is a very deep concern to address the challenges facing the environment and a strong desire for the church to take a lead Entitled God’s Planet – Our Problem?, the day started with a presentation from Chris King, Professor of Earth Science Education, who set out the current environmental crisis, with the biggest challenge being to find a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels.

The Rev Tobie Osmond, vicar of St Thomas’, spoke to the

conference about the innovative use of multi-media and outdoor worship in their recent Sacred Earth series, while Karen Butt of St Matthew’s, Wookey, explained how her church has taken a number of relatively simple steps to attain its Bronze EcoChurch award, and their plans to go for Silver.

people were keen to go back to their own churches better equipped and encouraged to embed care for the environment into the life and work of the church.

Jean Campbell, one of the delegates, said: “I came because I am very concerned about the environment. I have five grandchildren and I want them to have a future, I don’t want them to suffer because my generation didn’t do something about climate change. And I’d like to encourage the young by setting a good example.”

The Bishops of Bath and Wells and Taunton had followed the same theme with their challenge this Lent, when they challenged people to alter the things they do which damage the planet.

“What we now know about climate change and the impact we humans make on the world we live in, means that it is imperative that we take this responsibility seriously,” said the Rt Rev Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath and Wells. “The Earth is our home. It is beautiful beyond words. It is God’s gift to us and so we must take care of it.”

A NEW book about a local family of showmen is being launched at the Wells May Charter Fair on Saturday, May 4.

Big Shows: The Charles Heal and Sons Story has been put together by local history authors Richard Green and Guy Belshaw, both Honorary Members of the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain.

The book is a definitive story of Charles Heal and his family from Glastonbury, starting from the setting up his business in the town, and going on to run a very successful fairground business, having at its peak two touring sections of amusements.

Charles was famous for his philanthropic work and was also one of the founder members of the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain.

Wells City Band looks forward to return of concerts at bandstand WELLS City Band is aiming to reinstate the Sunday Bandstand Concerts this year in response to great demand from the people of Wells.

With the help of Wells City Council and Mendip District Council, it now feels confident that it can provide at least three concerts this year.

The band hopes to be on the bandstand in the Recreation Ground on May 12 and September 22, from 3pm-5pm.

There will be no performance in wet weather. The audience will

have to take their own chairs.

Other bands have been asked if they can help fill a rota for other Sundays.

Posters will be put up around Wells nearer the time.

On July 14, Wells City Band will be hosting a Massed Bands day – the Bishop’s Barn has been booked so this will go ahead whatever the weather, and there will be audience chairs for this event.

The bands will not be paid but will share money collected in buckets on the day.

Heads Up leaves lunch with £400 HEADS Up walked away with a cheque for £400 after the latest SOUP lunch in the Connect Centre.

Audience members decided that the South Horrington-based mental health charity deserved the lion’s share of the cash after listening to four-minute presentations from four good

causes. The others, who all left with £150, were Marie Curie, Wells Art Practice and Children’s Hospice South West.

A milestone was passed at the event on April 13 as more than 50 good causes have now received funding from Wells SOUP in the three years since it was launched

by Wells Independents.

New website has latest information A WELLS charity is expanding its services which are now all listed on its newly launched website.

The Lawrence Centre supports older people, including those living with memory loss and other health issues.

Its manager Maggie Charlesworth is delighted with the new website and said: “As a charity we are immensely proud of what we do and want the community in Wells and the surrounding villages to see all the services we offer, the quality of our lead staff and, through the gallery of photographs, the many activities available.”

The centre is operational every weekday from 10am2.30pm, and from April 27 it will also be open from 10.30am2.30pm on the last Saturday of each month.

Almshouses gain recognition for work towards conserving energy THE City of Wells Almshouses (CWA) has been recognised for its work towards conserving energy at the South West Energy Efficiency Awards in Bristol.

A huge amount of work has taken place over the last couple of years on the windows of the historic buildings, some of which date back to the mid-15th century. Planning permission could not be obtained for double glazing and so secondary glazing was installed using a company which specialises in bespoke work on historic properties.

The Almshouses was Commended under the category of Small Scale Projects (below £250,000) and Highly Commended in the category for Housing Associations / Landlords. During the evening there were awards in 11 categories.

Staycations prompt new features MUSIC Nights, arts and crafts events and a new play area have been launched at Wookey Hole Caves’ Bucklegrove Holiday Park at Rodney Stoke in response to an anticipated increase in staycations this summer.

New attractions have been added including a takeaway hot meal service. A number of new units have been added and others replaced to boost creature

comforts. The music nights are open to the public as well as holidaymakers.

Family seeking answers over former lab technician’s death THE family of a former science lab technician at Wells Cathedral School have launched legal action to establish if lab equipment containing asbestos caused her death from cancer.

Elizabeth Ann Griggs was known as Ann Cutis when she worked at the school between 1969 and 2001. She died in 2017 around six months after she was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a form of cancer linked to asbestos exposure.

Before her death, the 79-year-old instructed lawyers at solicitors Irwin Mitchell to investigate whether her exposure to the hazardous material could have been linked to her working life, and her family are continuing to seek answers.

Laura Wilkinson, the lawyer at Irwin Mitchell’s Bristol office representing Ann’s family, said: “Through our investigations we understand that Ann worked with products containing asbestos during her time as a school lab technician, but we would now be keen for more information regarding further detail about her exposure to asbestos dust.”

She appealed for former staff members or pupils to get in touch if they knew more about the use of asbestos-based equipment at the school.

Ann, a mother of four, lived in North Wootton until 1984 before she moved to Shepton Mallet.

Elizabeth Griggs Cathedral School involved setting up and packing away bunsen burners containing solid asbestos. She also remembered providing pupils with asbestos mats designed to prevent heat damage to work surfaces.

Ann told her legal team at Irwin Mitchell how the school announced plans to remove all asbestos from its site during the course of her employment, with the bunsen burners and asbestos mats being replaced.

Ann’s husband, Gerald, 91, said: “I am still devastated by Ann’s death and miss her every day. She was the kindest and most loving wife and mum anyone could wish for.

“Ann died before she was able to achieve justice. We now want to honour her memory by doing this for her and would be grateful to anyone who might be able to provide more information.”

In a statement, Wells Cathedral School said: “The claim relates to the use of asbestos mats which were in general use in schools nationally in the 1970s. The staff member herself stated that these mats were withdrawn from Wells Cathedral School in 1976, and that she did not believe that she was exposed to asbestos after 1976. This was the year in which the Department of Education and Science issued guidance to schools that these mats ‘should be replaced wherever possible’.

The school followed this advice immediately.

“Following the school’s own investigations and advice of an independent expert, it is our understanding that bunsen burners do not contain asbestos, but are made of metal. It is our belief that Mrs Griggs was referring to the use of anti-scorch mats which are placed under the bunsen burners. The HSE revealed that two companies had been selling bunsen burner gauzes to schools which had erroneously contained asbestos.

Wells Cathedral School was not affected by this since it was not supplied by either of the companies in question.

“We believe that Wells Cathedral School is fully compliant with all regulatory requirements in respect of the management of asbestos and takes all reasonable measures to make sure that staff, pupils and other visitors are safe.”

Show to feature Chris Lee works A NEW exhibition of work by popular Wells artist Chris Lee is being held at the Heritage Courtyard Gallery in May. Elevation is a one-man show featuring some of the most beautiful buildings that Chris has drawn on his travels.

He said: “It’s always been a privilege to sit in the sun sketching wonderful vistas, no wonder I see the world in a bright and exuberant light. This exhibition is intended to share that view.

“The colours – putting a particular strain on my yellow, orange and pink paint pots – of the Mediterranean; the geometric architecture of Italian Duomo’s – hard on the nibs; and the heavenly vision of those early builders.

“Then there’s the beer of course, that’s always good.”

Contest launched for Europe poem WELLS residents Christopher Bond and Jenny Smith, with Kevin Redpath from Glastonbury, are launching a national competition to find the most thoughtful and inspiring poem on Europe.

Having watched the turmoil of the Brexit negotiations, and as ordinary UK and European citizens have felt powerless to affect the outcome, they have decided to make a creative response through setting up a poetry competition with the theme A Poem for Europe.

They are inviting entrants to share their emotions about Europe and its future by writing a poem expressing them.

Shortlisted poems will be published online and in print.

There are two categories, Young People (16-25 years) and

Open (26+), with a first prize of £500 in each category.

The competition will be politically neutral – it is the quality of the poem that will count.

Gillian Clark, National Poet of Wales from 2008-2016, has agreed to judge the open category and the competition has received the endorsement from Dame Marina Warner, President of the Royal Society of Literature, who wrote: “Poetry does make things happen! Words have power! Imagination shapes ideas and values!

“This competition is a strong and marvellous and hopeful venture, and every entry will help make a difference.”

The St Cuthbert’s Academy Infants and Pre-School hall was filled with colour from the bright creations from the children at the Easter Bonnet Parade on April 5. The Mayor of Wells, Councillor Celia Wride, who attended the event, had a tough job in choosing the winners for each year group.

Three of the pupils are pictured above. This was the last in a series of Easter events at the school. Earlier in the week the children had designed vehicles for their decorated hard-boiled egg to travel in down a ramp.

Examples of the graphic art that will be on display at The Bishop’s Palace

Centenary display of graphic artwork AN exhibition of graphic art is opening at The Bishop’s Palace in May. Entitled SGFA 100, the works will celebrate artists who are members of The Society of Graphic Fine Art, and the creation of the society which is 100 years old this year.

The Society of Graphic Fine Art is the only national society dedicated to drawing. All work has to show drawing technique in whatever medium is used. The paintings will cover watercolour, oils and pure pencil from around 20 different artists.

The society was founded as a reaction to the loss of drawing technique being shown in the Cubist movement of 1919. Their first exhibition in 1921 was

supported by members of the Royal Academy of Arts, together with many of the leading draughtsmen of the day.

Nowadays in addition to black and white work and traditional drawing skills, the society encourages the use of colour and non-figurative art. The main criterion of membership, regardless of media discipline, is drawing excellence.

The show at The Bishop’s Palace is an opportunity for artists from the South West to showcase their work in the region.

It will take place in the Exhibition Room from May 22 until June 30, from 10am-6pm, and is included in standard admission to the Palace.

Playgroup bring and buy sale STEPPING Stones playgroup is holding a Spring Bring & Buy Sale in Stoberry Park School Hall on Saturday, May 18, from 10am-2pm.

Alongside the pre-loved book, toy and DVD stall, there will be a plant sale, cake stall, tombola and Grand Raffle.

Entry costs £1 per adult or £2 for a family and includes refreshments.

All monies raised will be invested in new toys and resources for the playgroup and

towards refurbishment of the building.

“We are really excited to be running an event which the whole community can be part of – we know that so many people have links with the playgroup, and hope that everyone will enjoy supporting this exciting event,” said playgroup leader Carly Thompson.

Change is afoot... possibly SPRING is normally a time for change and for new beginnings and this year we could be confronting some of the greatest changes we have had to face for a long time.

Whatever your view on leaving the EU, whether you think it will make for positive change or that it could be the worst thing you may ever encounter, it is still going to be important to look at all the potential impacts you might face and to prepare for them as best you can.

Along these lines, I suggest that if you haven’t done so already, make time in your day – by which I mean time when your business brain is still fully functioning and not any spare minute after paperwork is completed at around 10pm or so... you know who you are! – to think about possible effects and plan for them.

You see, for many of us in

No man – or business – is an island this lovely part of the UK, it seems as if we are well cushioned against the ‘slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’ (Hamlet) but actually, they have a nasty way of finding their way through and causing a good deal of damage when they do.

Let’s consider a potential strand of an imaginary business which shows how we may be caught out. Suppose we have

a customer in the UK who produces Doojummiflips and who buys necessary components from us. At first sight it looks as though the two of us will survive any major changes which might be brought about by Brexit.

When examined more closely, however, we might find that the majority of our customer’s products end up in Europe.

Suddenly, we find ourselves in a far less confident position.

It may make no difference to our customer’s business at all, but we may have to face some significant differences. What if his European customers insist that all Doojummiflips have parts which are sourced on the continent and not in the UK? Suddenly we have a problem and could lose valuable business.

It may seem a slightly convoluted proposition, but it’s one that could happen and one that could land us in trouble if we aren’t prepared for it. If, on

closer examination, you find that your goods or services are partly reliant upon customers who earn part or all or their income from Europe or further afield, you may wish to look at possibilities of spreading your client base to include more domestic markets or some that work within the World Trade Organisation rules.

As a young slip of a girl, I worked for an organisation in London which set up huge turnkey projects in the Middle East and Africa. It was complicated and yet fascinating to be involved in ensuring that all the parts worked together to enable the contracts to click into place. In a sense, we all need to be aware of all the parts that make the ‘whole’ in our business world. To steal a quote from John Donne, ‘No man’ and no business ‘is an island, entire of itself’. It’s well worth being aware of that in these fluid times.

Reported crimes up THERE were 89 reported crimes in Wells in February compared to 64 the month before, according to the latest police crime figures.

The biggest rises were in antisocial behaviour (up from 13 offences in January to 21 in February), theft (up from 3 to 12), public order offences (up from 7 to 11) and vehicle crime (up from 4 to 8).

Parade and fun day WELLS Labour Party’s International Workers Day parade, rally and free community fun day will take place on Saturday, May 4. Starting at 11.30am at Brown’s Gatehouse at Cathedral Green/Sadler Street, the parade will be followed by a Speakers Rally at the Recreation Ground Bandstand and family entertainment.

Keen response to wedding invitation HUNDREDS of people took advantage of an invitation to visit a former church near Wells at an open day showcasing it as a wedding venue.

Local businesses filled the marquee next to the church to highlight the services they offer to help make the big day special, ranging from cake-makers and florists to stationers and photographers.

“It’s gone really well. We had more than 100 people in the first hour alone,” said Michael Churches, who bought the 18th century Grade II listed church next to his Godney farm 19 years ago. “One person booked straight away just on seeing it.”

Initially used for storage, he applied for a civil wedding licence for the former church in 2015, and the first wedding was held there last year.

“We get quite a few weddings from Wells now,” said Michael.

He still farms the adjoining land, but having decided to diversify, he also now runs the Glastonbury Wedding & Events company with his wife Jenny and their two children, who both attended Coxley School and Wells Blue School.

Michael’s mother was a churchwarden at the church for many years before it closed in September 1998.

It has since been restored, and has kitchen, bar and toilet facilities.

Michael’s hope now is that it will become a popular location for weddings, as well as events such as birthday parties, anniversaries and retirement parties; as a venue for touring cyclists and others to stop at; or for activities such as yoga classes.

We must emphasise dangers of knives

News from the local policing team with PCSO Samuel White MY name is Samuel and as your newest member of the Wells beat team I would like to introduce myself. Many of you will have seen me on patrol around our community, greeting local residents and enjoying the sunshine.

For the young readers you may have met me in youth club where I’m usually found getting stuck in, engaging in art and design or giving educational talks on how to stay safe. And it’s this element of staying safe I’d like to talk about today.

Due to the increase in young people carrying bladed weapons I turn my attention to the parents/guardians of Wells

and the importance of educating our children on the dangers of carrying such weapons. n 99% of young people do not carry a knife. It is NOT the norm. n By carrying a knife, you are more likely to be stabbed yourself. n The typical depth of a knife wound is 3-5cms, 4cm allows penetration of the heart. n Almost 14,000 people a year are taken to hospital as a result of knife attacks. This is on average 38 victims every day.

I actively encourage any questions or concerns and welcome people to speak with me about the importance of this matter. You can choose not to carry a knife. Sometimes it can be scary for our young people approaching an officer, I aim to change that, but for those occasions Wells Police Station has a knife bin situated in its reception. Deposits can be made discreetly and anonymously.

I look forward to the coming months and helping in keeping our community safe and educated.

Reading group enjoying shared stories and poems A SHARED Reading for WellBeing group is bringing people together in Wells each week to enjoy stories and poems and chat over a cup of tea.

The group, funded by Somerset County Council, meets in Wells Library every Friday from 11am-12.30pm.

Unlike traditional book clubs, everything read is read together, live and aloud in the room, so nothing needs to be read in advance.

There are regular pauses to discuss what people think after a few paragraphs have been read.

Organisers say members tell them that the sessions make them feel uplifted and more connected to others and their community.

Police choir will sing in church THE Avon and Somerset Constabulary Male Voice Choir has been invited to sing in St Cuthbert’s Church, Wells, on Friday, May 24, at 7.30pm.

Formed in 1971, the choir is representative of the constabulary with membership consisting of serving and retired police officers, police staff, and a few guest singers. Their repertoire of music is extensive, ranging from classical male choral music to popular songs.

Less and less chance of spotting an adder Andrew Chamberlain laments the decline of his favourite snake AS we move through spring and the days get both longer and warmer, a fantastic group of animals start to make an appearance. Legend has followed them through the centuries imbibing them with mystery and magical powers from witchcraft and magic through to religious symbolism.

Of course, I’m talking about our amazing reptiles and amphibians. Britain has six species of reptile including three snakes (grass snake, adder and smooth snake) and lizards (common and sand and the slow

Mating Adders on the Mendips worm). My favourite of all these and the one which I have spent the most time observing is the adder (Vipera berus).

The adder is Britain’s only venomous snake and is easily distinguishable from all other species. They have a distinct diamond pattern along their back and an arrowhead pattern on their head. For those that

get close enough (which is not advisable), they have dark red eyes with vertical pupils, unique in British snakes.

Adders are viviparous meaning eggs develop inside their body, giving birth to live young in the late spring. Being cold-blooded, or exothermic to use its proper name, means that they must warm their bodies before they can move, hunt or even digest food. They need to raise their body temperature to over 25 degrees leading to them being often observed on drystone walls and dry grass basking in the morning. It is more common to see the larger females basking as they need the warmth to develop their young inside them.

Sadly, the adder is in massive decline with 90 per cent of known sites having a small population of 10 or fewer adults. This is due to several causes from climate change through to habitat destruction.

Interestingly, adults will return to the same hibernation spot every year.

If you are lucky, you will see the adder dance of upright entwined snakes. Gallery looks forward to next show after success of the last THE Figures and Faces exhibition at Andelli Art was one of the strongest held there so far, according to gallery owner Ellie Jones.

Regional and internationallyrenowned artists were shown at the South Horrington gallery in March alongside pieces drawn from the Andelli Art collection.

Several of the exhibiting artists attended the private view, helping to make it a vibrant and stimulating evening, said Ellie.

Next at Andelli Art will be a solo exhibition by Bristolbased artist Stewart Geddes.

Stewart’s first exhibition with the gallery will feature recent paintings in what is described as his distinctively urgent style, demonstrating his passion for

colour and textural surfaces.

Stewart is president of the Royal West of England Academy, Honorary RA and RSA, and recently curated Albert Irvin and Abstract Expressionism in conjunction with the Albert Irvin Estate and Tate Gallery, presented at the RWA in Bristol from December 2018 to March 2019. Formerly head of painting at Cardiff School of Art and Design, he is currently a lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Gloucestershire and associate lecturer at the Arts University, Bournemouth.

The exhibition will run from April 27 until May 15. The gallery at Mendip House, Upper Breach, will be open from TuesdaySaturday, 10am-5pm.

Gold medals for two of vineyard’s wines WINES produced at a vineyard near Wells have won two Gold medals at the Independent English Wine Awards (IEWA).

Fenny Castle Vineyard, at Worth, was awarded Gold medals for its Castle Blanc de Noir 2015 and Ortega 2017 at the annual English wine competition held at The Rummer Hotel in Bristol on March 23.

The competition saw 132 English and Welsh wines blind tasted by a panel of 25 highcalibre judges, from winemakers to sommeliers and buyers, chaired by Master of Wine Liam Stevenson.

Fenny Castle Ortega was described by the judges as having a “lovely rich nose of honeysuckle and tangerine with vanilla, honey and herbaceous notes on the well-structured palate. Very long finish.”

Fenny Castle’s signature sparkling wine, Blanc de Noir, is made from 100 per cent Pinot

More than 15.6 million bottles of English wine were produced in 2018, a 130 per cent increase on that produced in 2017, according to industry body Wine GB. There are now 522 commercial vineyards and 164 wineries in England and Wales, constituting a total of 2,888 hectares of land under vine, up nearly 50 per cent from 2015.

It is estimated that 2 million vines were planted in 2018.

The annual production last year reached an all-time high of 15.6 million bottles, expected to reach 40 million bottles by 2040.

Founder of IEWA, Bristolbased marketer Alexander Taylor, said: “The IEWA is an emergent independent voice, committed to helping add volume to the conversation.

After all, English wine is worth shouting about.”

Vineyard tours at Fenny Castle and tastings on Saturdays and Sundays can be booked through the website.

The wines are sold at the Wednesday Wells Market, and the cellar door shop at the vineyard is open daily.

Noir grapes. It is said to have a rich nose of lightly baked brioche, crisp apple and pear fruit, with a palate light with refreshing acidity and a complex richness.

The first vines were planted at the family-run vineyard and winery in 2011 and it now produces a range of still and sparkling wines.

The hill on which the vineyard stands has an area designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its geology.

THE Wells & Mendip Museum’s winter exhibition displays books that illustrate types of drinkingglasses similar to those in the museum’s permanent collection.

The exhibition closes on April 30.

Among the permanent display are: n A small 18thcentury ale glass (beer was then evidently strong stuff). n Slim stems from the 1740s when glasses were taxed according to their weight. n By the 1780s something less fragile was needed when the slamming of glasses down on the table when drinking toasts became a habit. n To stop toastmasters over-indulging, a glass with a thickened bowl held much less liquor than appeared from the outside.

Hundreds take to pool in swimming club’s annual gala MORE than 1,000 swimmers from across the South West took part in this year’s annual swimming gala organised by Wells Swimming Club.

The City of Wells Open Meet took place at Millfield School swimming pool on April 6 and 7.

Open to swimmers from nine years old to 15 and over, there were numerous races held throughout the weekend.

Competitors came from Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, as well as Wiltshire and South Wales.

The event was sponsored

by Bovis Homes, and regional marketing officer Alice Bukauskiene said: “It was a fantastic occasion and we were delighted to support this year’s Open Meet.

“The event was brilliantly organised by Wells Swimming Club, which is a fantastic asset for the local community.”

Call for tribute to seafarers

A FORMER Wells Cathedral School boarding house with views of Wells Cathedral’s West Front and access on to Cathedral Green has been put up for sale.

The Grade II listed Canon Grange includes eight bedrooms and one flat, and could be converted into bed and breakfast accommodation subject to planning consent.

The property is currently owned by Wells Cathedral School but is surplus to their requirements.

MARITIME welfare charity Sailors’ Society is asking churches in Wells to remember the world’s seafarers in a special service on July 14.

Congregations from around the world will take part in Sea Sunday services in aid of Sailors’ Society.

Each year, the Christian charity, which celebrated its 200th birthday in 2018, asks churchgoers to pray and give thanks for the world’s 1.6 million seafarers.

Sandra Welch, Sailors’ Society’s deputy CEO, said: “Whether they know it or not, the people of Wells rely upon seafarers. More than 90 per cent of everything we own comes by sea – our clothes, phones, cars – even the bricks that make up our homes.

“Holding a Sea Sunday service for Sailors’ Society is a fantastic way of recognising the amazing work seafarers do.”

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS QUILTERS WELLS Quilters are a group of adults who meet on the last Wednesday in every month at Wells Golf Club from 10amnoon.

We meet to quilt and sew (knit or crochet) and to get together with like-minded people, to chat and exchange ideas over coffee/tea and biscuits. Occasionally we have a speaker, visit a place of interest, have a workshop or take on a charity project.

An example of work by Wells Quilters WELLS WI AFTER settling down with a drink and some cake from a delicious selection members welcomed Cheryl from Mendip Health Connections.

In an interesting and informative talk Cheryl explained that Mendip Health Connections started in Frome in 2013 after a small group of GPs identified a need for support for patients with a range of long-term health conditions who often need social as well as medical support. The service is funded by Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group and covers Wells, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury and Street serving anyone over the age of 18. However, most clients are aged 70 or over.

Initially health connectors see clients, often by referral, on a one to one basis, often in their own home. The aim is to determine what is most important to that client for their recovery and then signpost them to services or groups that can help. This may include helping them to return to exercise or socialising with others. The

health connector works with the client for up to six weeks to develop a life plan which, with the client’s consent, is shared with their GP or other health professionals who can update it.

Mendip Health Connections also runs an extensive database with information on a wide range of voluntary groups and charities that can be accessed via their website, or by a health connector. In order to be included on the website groups must be run by a charity, low cost or GP managed. If no appropriate group is found, and there is a need, Mendip Health Connections can help to set one up with the assistance of volunteers. They have set up talking cafes and health walks in all our towns, the one in Wells is held in Pickwicks Café. Since starting, clients attending these groups have been developing their own friendship groups to continue socialising outside of the meetings.

Cheryl also explained that they are also recruiting and training a large number of community connectors, people working with the public such as police officers, taxi drivers, hairdressers, or supermarket staff, who can signpost people to Mendip Health Connections and the website. There are at present 1,052 community connectors, with the numbers rising.

After some interesting questions, all agreed it was an excellent service and applauded the work being done to enable people to meet, socialise and get mutual support from others in a similar situation and encourage healthy lifestyles which ultimately should help reduce the pressure on health services such as GPs and ultimately reduce hospital admissions.

In other news, two members, Zoe and Angela, are taking part in the London Moonwalk on May 11. This is a full marathon (26.2 miles) run through the city at night in a decorated bra, to raise money for breast cancer charities. The walk is open to men as well as women, as long as they also wear a bra.

Members signed up for our two outings to Carymoor Environmental Centre on Saturday, May 18, and the American Museum in Bath in July before ending the evening with a welcome cup of tea and an opportunity to chat.

18th century for Kew Gardens, South Africa has been a rich source of new and interesting species to ornament our gardens.

Masson was the first to be sent out by Joseph Banks and he hasn’t been the last.

New introductions are arriving every year, cultivars enjoying the limelight at RHS Chelsea and other big shows.

Paul Cumbleton, recently retired Head of Alpine Section at RHS Wisley, will be coming to the May meeting of Wells Gardening Club to talk on South African Bulbs. His 11 years in charge of the department has given him a wealth of experience, much gained abroad. He now lives in Somerton and we are fortunate to be able to welcome him to Wells Town Hall on Thursday, May 18, at 7.30pm.

Everyone is welcome to come along. There will be some plants for sale and news of summer events such as garden visits and gardens open in Wells.

Tudor Hopkins, managing director of The White Hart in Saddler Street and of the two other regional hotels which comprise the Sleeping Bear group, gave a humorous account of the journey which has taken him to this position. Tudor has had a fascinating life in hotels, ranging from dogsbody to being marketing director in prestigious central London hotels and in the USA. He has previously been part-owner, owner, and winner of The Sunday Times Hotel of the Year award, and a winner on TV’s Four in a Bed. Now, he and his wife, Lucy, are in the process of building up The White Hart, which has been both refurbished and relaunched as a pub with rooms, and things are looking bright with attractions such as Sunday lunches and Sunday quiz nights drawing increasing numbers.

Ross Young turned the audience’s attention to the importance of coach visitors to the city, and especially to the very positive influence the Visit

By Coach team of meeters and greeters have on enhancing the visitors’ experience and in indirectly encouraging them to spend both more time and money in the city. There are 12 volunteers in this team, with eight being on duty at the coach station at any one time.

The result is that more coaches are choosing Wells as a destination, and they are tending to stay longer and the passengers are spending more money.

Passengers’ visits are made all the more enjoyable by the informative street maps they are offered and the local knowledge they are given by the meeters and greeters.

There is much more that can be done, including especially the improvement of the facilities at that first port of call for many passengers, the toilets, but both the Bishop’s Palace and the city have won the highest awards from British Coach Tourism.

Rounding off this evening, which was, indeed, one totally concerned with current local matters, Andy Webb, from Visit Wells, spoke about the desirability of providing a range of attractions that would entice visitors, not so that the

city is swamped, but so that it could benefit from an increased vibrancy and a growth in its prosperity. His watchword was cooperation across the city, with organisations and agencies such as the cathedral, the Bishop’s Palace, the museum, the civic society, the town hall, the chamber of commerce working together.

Andy was full of praise, for instance, for the new Wells heritage pass, in which the cathedral, the palace and the museum have combined to produce a package whereby one ticket for all three can be purchased and which gives unlimited access to each for 12 months and a discount in all their shops.

For the future, Andy sees a need to speak with experts who really know about these things while also trying to recruit more volunteers. These are needed especially as money is not plentiful, and this is likely to remain the case, and there is a limit as to how many organisations existing volunteers can possibly support.

An evening of local, topical interest saw a large number of local people in attendance, and the questions, and applause, which followed showed that Wells today, its character and its future, are of great interest to residents.

The local theme very much continues on Wednesday, May 8, when the current mayor, Councillor Wride, talks about a year in the life of a mayor.

A display produced by Angie Blackwell at Wells Floral Club Bare twigs of Willow and white flowered Genista lent support for a cascade of white Antirrhinum, Eucalyptus and cream Tulips set of by white feathers.

A column arrangement of straight Forsythia, green Euphorbia, tall yellow Antirrhinums and Calla Lilies with pink Ranunculus, Gerber and Bluebells incorporated into the upright stems. A very novel approach added miniature daffodils with bulbs and roots straddling the outside of the pot for that individual look.

Further demonstrations included apple boughs, softened with contortuous Hazel, buds just broken that provided support for double Tulips, Lilly Metallica leaves, Viburnum tinnus and Spirea for a total spring look.

A tropical look to spring was provided with yellow Cymbidium orchids and Calla lilies.

A vote of thanks was given by Edith Kennedy and refreshments served by Denny Johnson and Geraldine North after the draw for the five wonderful arrangements.

‘I cannot imagine life without rugby’ SPORTS TALK This month the spotlight is on Ben Knight, of Wells RFC Tell us a bit about your background in rugby, Ben. I joined Wells RFC as a 10-yearold back in 1992 when mini and junior rugby was in its infancy.

I made my 1st XV debut as a 17-year-old, and was involved with the team when we gained promotion to Somerset Premier.

I was lucky enough to captain the club for a number of seasons during a period which included promotion to Western Counties.

We came second in our first season but lost a play-off final before being moved to Southern Counties, winning the league and being promoted to South West 1 where we spent two seasons. We notably beat Weston-super-Mare RFC away, among other big scalps, before being relegated.

During this period we also won the National Senior Vase, with the final being played at Twickenham.

Give us an overview of the rugby scene in Wells.

Wells is a one-club city, with our closest rivals being Tor RFC in Glastonbury – a club we look forward to renewing acquaintances with having just been relegated back to Somerset Premier.

As a club we are almost 200 strong on the mini and junior front, so there’s obviously an appetite locally for youngsters to want to play rugby. We try to have a visibility in schools, but we’re relying on teachers volunteering their time for extracurricular sport and club coaches

There’s no doubt we would like more members and to see more children running about on a Sunday, but the very fact that 95 per cent of the players involved in the success I mentioned previously came through our minis and juniors suggests something has worked. The battle is to keep on improving on this front when there are so many other things for kids to do these days.

Tell us a bit about Wells Rugby Club.

We run three senior sides, a vets side, as well as a Colts side, three girls sides and a full complement of minis and juniors. We really do see ourselves as a club for all ages and abilities, and have some fantastic people driving all sides of the game from the vets to the girls to minis, juniors and seniors.

We were founded in 1876

and have had many homes since, at one stage being known as Mendip RFC I believe, and eventually settled into our current home in the late 1980s.

We’re hoping to relocate in the not too distant future to some state-of-the-art facilities to better cater for the hundreds of people turning out for Wells RFC every weekend.

How difficult is rugby to take up as a sport? Can kids learn it easily?

Absolutely. The intricacies of the game, with some of its more complex laws, are slowly dripfed in. If you start young it all becomes second nature. That said, rugby really is a simple game. I suspect a lot of players don’t know all the laws; but if you run hard, tackle hard and pass the ball backwards you won’t go far wrong. We’ve had a number of people take up the game well into adulthood, having never played the game before. We

aren’t professionals so everyone is very happy to give new starters the time of day.

What would you say to parents who think it’s potentially too rough for smaller kids?

I was that small kid and I genuinely cannot imagine life without rugby. It’s a testing, demanding game but I’ve made so many friends for life through it and have had so many great experiences. I certainly didn’t expect to be holding a winners trophy aloft at Twickenham, playing alongside my two brothers and 20 of my best mates.

I often find the smaller kids become technically the most proficient; the players with the best technique are generally the ones who avoid serious injury.

That aside, the benefits of playing this fantastic team sport far outweigh the potential risks involved.

It’s traditionally been a male-dominated sport, but can girls and women play too?

Yes, girls can play with boys up until the age of 11, and we run Under 13s, Under 15s and Under 18 girls. We’ll hopefully one day also run an adult team. The RFU are very pro women’s sport.

If people want to try out, when and where is training?

We’re now taking a well-earned break, but the seniors will be back training every Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm in the first week of July. The minis will be kicking off on the first Sunday of September. Information on when the junior age groups boys and girl restart is available via our website.

Rebuilding job starts next season in lower division RUGBY BACK in September Wells played Avonmouth Old Boys in the first match of the season. A match that they won and before the end of the month, they had won two more and whilst they were not going to set the world on fire, it did look that they would have a reasonably good season.

However when the season finished in April with a heavy defeat at Avonmouth, their twenty first loss, they were propping up the Tribute Western Counties North League table and doomed to drop into the Somerset Premier League.

Premier League their journey with two promotions to reach South West 1 West and after a successful year at those dizzy heights, the journey back down again to where it all started.

Next season therefore starts the rebuild. The club has plenty of promising youngsters, yes many go to university and others leave home, but hopefully sufficient will come through the

ranks to play for senior sides and surely with all the new houses going up, there must be some rugby players about.

Before the curtain finally falls, there is the Club Presentations Dinner Dance on May 11, always popular and the organisers are hoping to top last year’s attendance of 250. The AGM follows in June and then, well, it’s nearly time to start training.

Wells City FC U11s show off their new training tops and refillable water bottles

Under 11s provided with jackets and water bottles FOOTBALL WELLS City FC U11s have new training jackets and refillable water bottles to help them kick dehydration out of their game thanks to sponsorship from Wessex Water.

The water company’s Hydrate Feel Great campaign promotes

the health and cost benefits of drinking tap water as opposed to other alternatives.

The campaign also aims to reduce the use of single-use plastics by encouraging people to use refillable bottles rather than buying bottled drinks.

Wells U11s coach Mark Baggelaar said: “The entire squad was so excited to receive

their new jackets and reusable water bottles from Wessex Water. We are a grassroots community football club, so we are reliant upon the support of sponsors to enable us to give so many children the opportunity to participate.

“The matching jackets will not only protect our players from the elements on matchdays but will

also help with the sense of unity and pride in being part of a team.

“We requested that the children not bring single-use plastic bottles to training and matches some time ago.

Therefore, having the reusable water bottles helps our players remain hydrated, while showing responsibility for the environment.”

Team unlucky not to snatch late draw FOOTBALL Evercreech Rovers 3 Wells City A 2 WELLS went into the final league game of the season hoping to finish on a high, and despite a spirited performance, were narrowly defeated by Evercreech Rovers.

City went behind on 15 minutes after a poor clearance fell straight to the feet of an Evercreech forward who found the bottom corner of the goal with a good finish. Wells responded immediately with a period of good passing and possession and were rewarded when a defence-splitting pass from James Russell found the run of Jordan Strode-Walton, who calmly rolled the ball past the Rovers keeper to level to scoreline.

On the stroke of half time Evercreech regained the lead.

Wells again failed to clear the ball from their penalty area and were punished by a close-range finish.

Both teams came out fired up after the break. The second half saw tough tackles flying all over the pitch as both teams battled for all three points. Wells managed to grab an equaliser on 50 minutes when after a goalmouth scramble, the ball fell to man of the match Tyler Cornish on the edge of the box who managed to shoot through a crowd of players to get City back in the game.

The winning goal came courtesy of an Evercreech penalty after a reckless tackle following another poor mistake from the Wells back line.

Wells City A 4 Clutton Reserves 1 A SUNNY afternoon at the Athletic Ground saw Wells City A take on Clutton Reserves in the Charity Cup. Wells dominated from start to finish and were unlucky not to win by a bigger margin, hitting the Clutton crossbar on four occasions.

City took the lead in the first minute through eventual man of the match James Russell.

Finding himself in the opposition penalty area, Russell calmly side-stepped a challenge from a Clutton defender before rolling the ball into the corner of the net.

Wells doubled their lead ten minutes later after a surging run from Brad Hill, cutting inside from the right wing and

unleashing a fierce shot that gave the Clutton keeper no chance.

A fine defensive display from the Wells back three limited Clutton to one chance all game.

On the stroke of half time Clutton took their chance and pulled a goal back, a through ball finding the run of Clutton’s forward who just managed to squeeze the ball past City keeper Adam Laing.

The second half saw Wells dominate once more, and it only took six minutes to reestablish their two-goal lead.

A James Russell cross found the completely unmarked Edd Goodliff who headed home for City’s third goal of the afternoon.

Wells completed a comfortable victory 20 minutes from the end when Russell, who had caused Clutton problems all afternoon, found Tyler Cornish who finished well to put Wells into the next round of the cup.
