‘Wonderful to see that kindness still flourishes’ THERE have been many acts of kindness around Wells in the past month as the community rallies round during the coronavirus outbreak.

Volunteers with Wells Coronavirus Network have been leading the way, ensuring that food and medicines reach the people that need them.

There are now 300 volunteers – who are each being issued with an ID card to show that they are registered with the organisation – and their efforts have been receiving heartfelt appreciation from local people.

‘If a face-to-face consultation is considered medically necessary it will be arranged’ have received a ‘Shielding’ letter due to medical conditions that mean you are more vulnerable to coronavirus, please remind the doctor of this when you call.

In order to protect our patients and staff by minimising the risk of transmission of coronavirus we have had to make major changes in the way that we work. All first contact with patients is now by telephone, we will do everything we can to avoid putting patients at risk by bringing them into the surgery so we are using telephone and sometimes video consultations together with photos emailed to the practice. Rest assured that if a face-to-face consultation is

considered medically necessary it will be arranged.

If you do need medical advice please call your surgery on the normal surgery phone numbers, and do not just turn up at the surgery. The receptionist will either sort out your query, or book a call with a doctor or nurse depending on the nature of your problem. If you have regular blood tests, injections or other nurse appointments then please ring and speak to us about whether these can safely be postponed during this crisis.

If it is necessary for you to attend the surgery for an appointment we may direct you to a different entrance from the one that you are used to, and we will advise you of this over the phone. It is helpful if you can arrive as near to your appointment time as possible, so that you don’t have to wait outside the door. Ideally arrive by car so that you can wait safely in the car until the waiting room is clear. Whatever the reason for your appointment you will be asked to wear a face mask to reduce infection risk.

We are continuing to take requests for repeat prescriptions via the usual routes, and we are working closely with the local pharmacies to ensure that your medications are available when you need them. We are trying to arrange that all prescriptions are collected directly from one of the pharmacies and not in person from the surgery.

These changes are all designed to keep you, our patients, as safe as possible and to look after our staff so that they can continue to provide medical care to the population of Wells during this difficult time. We are very grateful to our patients who have shown great understanding and to everyone who is doing their bit to support the NHS, and to tackle the coronavirus crisis by observing the social distancing rules, these really are important and do make a huge difference. Finally we would like to thank our community for all the expressions of support we have received, they really are much appreciated.

A shopper in Wells has expressed her gratitude after a man came to her rescue when her car failed to start in the Lidl car park. Karen Marsh said the Good Samaritan, named Pete, is her hero for getting her vehicle going again.

She said: “I had inadvertently left my lights on and my vehicle would not start after shopping in Lidl’s in Wells. This very kind gentleman wearing a face mask approached me and asked if I needed assistance, which I did.

He asked me to give him five minutes and he would return home to get jump leads in order that I may start my car.

“The kind gentleman returned in five minutes, jump leads in hand, and we started my vehicle wearing gloves, masks and as much as possible keeping to the two-meter distance rule. I asked could I give him something for his trouble, he said no as one day I may be able to help him.

I asked his name and he said it was Pete, so a big thank you to Pete in the face mask in the light blue metallic car. His kindness was greatly appreciated, he was my hero.

“It is wonderful to see that in these very unprecedented and worrying times that kindness still flourishes.”

Daniels cafe in Queen Street

One lucky recipient of a meal from Charlie Bigham’s has been earning widespread praise for delivering free meals to key workers. Cafe owner Georgie Robbins said: “We’ve delivered free breakfasts to NHS staff and bacon sandwich platters to key workers as a way of saying thank you and showing our appreciation for what they are doing for us all.”

Food producer Charlie Bigham’s has been delivering free meals to homes in and around Wells in a bid to spread warmth and comfort amongst those living near its Dulcote site.

A total of 1,500 lasagne meals for two will be delivered to every house on selected streets.

Founder Charlie Bigham said: “In recent weeks, I’ve been humbled by how Somerset communities and neighbourhoods are working

together to support one another, during these uncertain and difficult times. We’ve been a resident at the Quarry Kitchen, Dulcote, since 2017, so I feel it’s important to be a good neighbour too – using our food to make people’s days a little more special.”

During the Easter period, the Swan Hotel in Wells donated 1,000 Easter eggs to 14 essential services in the BA5 postcode.

Kevin Newton, the owner of the Swan – which has had to close for the first time in its history – said: “The Swan has served in the heart of the Wells community for nearly 600 years and we wanted to do something to show our appreciation to those still serving the community during these difficult times.”

More than 80 people received a surprise Easter treat thanks to The Lawrence Centre in Wells.

Daffodils and home-made ginger cake were delivered over two days at the bank holiday weekend by the centre’s manager Maggie Charlesworth and her daughter Georgina.

“Hopefully we brought some good cheer over Easter,” said Maggie. “We are keeping in touch with everyone who comes to the centre in normal times with regular deliveries of cake and offers of any help they may need at this difficult time.

“They are all missing coming to The Lawrence Centre and looking forward to returning when we can.”

THERE will be no Wells Carnival this year.

A decision has been taken to postpone until 2021 all seven carnivals on the Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnivals circuit – Bridgwater, Highbridge and Burnham-on-Sea, Weston-superMare, North Petherton, Shepton Mallet, Wells and Glastonbury – due to the coronavirus threat.

The Wells event was to have taken place on November 20.

A spokesperson for the Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnivals Association said: “Unfortunately illuminated carnivals like we have been accustomed to in Somerset will now not take place this year and will be sadly postponed.

“It is highly unlikely that any large gatherings of people will be allowed until there is a vaccination for Covid-19, and when this is combined with the ongoing social distancing arrangements which will remain in place for some considerable time yet, there is very little chance of the towns and the entries of being able to raise the necessary monies needed to put on such spectacular events.

“If the situation changes, we are sure some of the towns will look at continuing the carnival tradition in a very low key and symbolic way. In the meantime, please stay safe and our thoughts are very much with those who have been affected and impacted by coronavirus.”

Work on pub to be continued THE project to refurbish and reopen The King’s Head in Wells High Street will continue as soon as the situation permits. The pub was due to open again in May after a £560,000 refurbishment

by Star Pubs & Bars, but work has been put on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak.

A Star Pubs & Bars spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, refurbishment works at The King’s Head in Wells are temporarily on hold. We’re very keen to complete those works once Government guidelines allow for this to happen.”

Thanks to community for following advice YOUR local police team have been working hard over recent weeks to help local residents stay safe and connected during these strange and unprecedented times. We have been out in the community as much as possible on our bikes – if you see us, please give us a wave.

We have been amazed and impressed by the way local people have been adhering to the government advice to stay home, protect the NHS and save lives.

The pictures, above, showing an empty Wells Market Place and The Moat Walk over the sunny Easter weekend show just how brilliant our local communities are and I want to say a heartfelt thank you for making our jobs easier during this time.

The Wells Coronavirus Network which has been set up by Emma Lefevre and Kirstie Harris of Wake Up Wells currently has 300 volunteers who are supporting vulnerable people who may need more support at this time. They are based at the Elim Connect Centre and can be contacted by emailing hello@helpwells.co.uk.

My PCSO 9327 Samuel White has set up a wonderful scheme called ‘Thinking of You’ where local children are making cards for us to send to vulnerable people who we cannot visit at this current time. We have even had a design sent in from someone in Spain who has relatives locally.

On the Charter Way estate, we have been joining in with a morning sing song and dance (at a socially safe distance of course)

with some of the older residents.

I can confirm my team performs a mean ‘YMCA’ routine!

We have also been helping to keep up the spirits of some of our local children who have had birthdays but not been able to have a party due to Covid-19, by singing happy birthday to them outside their houses in West Street and Wand Road.

We have decorated Wells Police Station with rainbows in the windows, to complement the fabulous rainbow artwork that local children have put on display in their windows.

These are strange and often frightening times, but I am heartened by the rallying round of local residents and am proud to police such a caring and supportive community.

How group grew and grew Rachel Sherman, founder of the popular Wells Community Notice Board Facebook group, describes how it has felt to watch it grow, and why it has become even more important during the coronavirus pandemic THE community noticeboard was started in May 2016. I was looking for something like it on Facebook to get recommendations of tradespeople for my mum’s new house – she had just moved to Wells from Kent. When I saw there wasn’t a community group like this, I started one and it went from there. I added 100 or so friends to begin with and it soon snowballed.

It’s been amazing to watch it grow and become a really useful resource for local people, businesses and charities. We try to ensure the focus remains as local as possible but, of course, we do allow people from outside the area to join as there are many people who visit Wells regularly, come into Wells for food or shopping etc, but we try to ensure they all have some sort of link to the area. It seems to have become a very important point for information and I’m thrilled about that. It is a very active group and often lively! It is never completely quiet, there’s always something going on.

I work full time, selfemployed as a jewellery designer which enables me to work, but at the same time keep an eye on the group and admin it. It can be a bit of a juggling act but I generally manage OK. There were three of us adminning it for quite a while but more recently it has become necessary to have

more of us as it has grown so much. I am ably assisted by four other admins now and their input is greatly appreciated.

Between us, we do OK. As we all work different times and shifts in our own work life, different admins just jump on and off the group and keep an eye on it when they can. There’s no set structure or shift pattern, there doesn’t really need to be. We all get along well too, which helps a lot. Admin meetings consist of a few pints down the Rose & Crown now and again.

The noticeboard now has nearing 11,500 members which is incredible. I never expected it to gain more than 4,000 at most. We now exceed the population of Wells. Generally the noticeboard is very good natured, of course there are some heated discussions at

times and occasionally we need to intervene, but not very often.

We try to limit political posts as these are guaranteed to light the touch paper.

Since the arrival of the coronavirus, we have seen the noticeboard really come into its own. It has been a great resource for all of the community, and a great signposting point for other services. We have had nearly 1,500 new members join in the last few weeks and a good deal of these are relatives who don’t live in Wells themselves, but are concerned for the welfare of their older and vulnerable relations during lockdown.

I am very proud of Wells and the community within and I hope people continue to use and contribute to the community noticeboard for a very long time to come.

Mayors to each serve for longer THIS year’s mayor-making ceremony, which was due to take place in May, has been postponed until October.

The current Mayor of Wells, Councillor John Osman, will remain mayor until then.

In October he will be succeeded as mayor by the current deputy mayor, Councillor Philip Welch, who will then also serve an 18-month term.

Councillor Oliver Hartley will become the new deputy mayor.

Most city council meetings have been temporarily suspended, though the planning committee is still deciding applications and exchanging opinions by email.

The Wells in Bloom competition will not take place this year.

However, the hanging baskets and cradles will still be put up by city council staff as the order was completed before the lockdown was announced.

Library surge THE number of people joining Somerset’s library service has rocketed during the coronavirus lockdown, despite library buildings being closed to the public.

Hundreds more people have joined Somerset libraries in the past five weeks compared to the same time last year.

Residents invited to join shared VE Day celebration WELLS residents are being encouraged to celebrate VE Day on Friday, May 8, if they can safely do so.

The May Bank Holiday had been moved to May 8 so that the nation could hold commemorative events over that weekend to mark 75 years since Victory in Europe was achieved in 1945.

There may now be a

Visual arts exhibition moving online

IT might be all change for the format of this year’s Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) exhibition, but plans are full steam ahead to ensure people can still see the shortlisted entries of contemporary art from around the world.

“Staying true to the original objective of WAC, we are working hard to support and promote our artists in any way we can during these exceptionally challenging times,” said Paddy O’Hagan, chair of WAC. To provide more time to enter, the submission date for the open competition has been extended until Saturday, August 1, 2020.

The shortlisted works will then initially be shown in a virtual exhibition in September, supported by a social media campaign.

Ultimately, WAC remains committed to providing the unique opportunity of showing in Wells Cathedral to all artists worldwide.

“With the full support of the Dean of Wells, the Very Rev Dr John Davies, we will present the exhibition in Wells Cathedral as soon as it is safe to do so,” said Paddy.

“But in the short term, an online exhibition will ensure

people can still view the exceptionally high standard of work that the competition attracts.”

WAC was established in 2012 by a group of artists and their friends in Wells, looking at ways to support artists post-recession.

A multi-media, open competition was set up, resulting in an exhibition and prizes for outstanding contributions.

The first competition attracted more than 800 submissions; this increased to 1,800 global entries in 2019 with the resulting exhibition held in the magnificent surrounds of Wells Cathedral.

Merger creates ‘more resilient’ group YMCA Mendip & South Somerset has merged with YMCA Bath Group to create a new joint identity YMCA Brunel Group.

The charities decided to unite as a result of a meeting of culture and ambition across the two organisations. They hope that the newly formed YMCA Brunel Group will provide wider services for more people across more communities. YMCA Mendip & South Somerset work included providing housing and support, with one housing project based in Wells.

organisation we are bringing two complimentary sets of skills and people together that ultimately will enable us to be more fit for purpose moving forward; and even better able to meet our charitable aims.

MENDIP District Council and Fusion Lifestyle are to look at ways of preventing travellers returning after the brief occupation of land at Charter Way, Wells, in April.

A council spokesperson said: “The council was aware of a brief occupation of travellers on land in Wells that it leases to Fusion Lifestyle. Fusion Lifestyle run the leisure centre in the city, which is located on Charter Way. “As leaseholder, the leisure company manage the land, and so it was they who took action to resolve the issue. The travellers have left, and Mendip District Council is working with Fusion Lifestyle to clean-up the site and to look at ways to secure the space, moving forward.”

Post office cuts hours but still open for now WELLS Post Office is staying open for now in its present location in Market Place, but with reduced opening hours.

The revised opening hours during the coronavirus epidemic are 9am-2pm Monday to Friday.

It will not open on a Saturday.

The Post Office has agreed to move Wells Post Office to Peacocks in Wells High Street at a date to be confirmed. The store is currently closed due to the epidemic and the Government requirement that non-essential retailers should temporarily close.

Postmistress Beverley Truman at Wells Post Office The Post Office had been planning for the branch to relocate to Peacocks on April 14.

The company said that it is extremely grateful to the current Postmaster, Kevin Truman and his team for agreeing to maintain the branch at Market Place for the time being. This involves delaying the planned retirement of Kevin and his wife Beverley, the Postmistress.

“From people giving us a wave through the window to lots of thank yous for providing a wonderful service and staying open it has given myself and my staff a feeling we are doing something good.

“We have become a lifeline to many people and we like to think we are giving people a bit of hope.”

Somerset, Annie Maw, said: “This year, the true worth of the Somerset Day concept has been displayed. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, all of the planned events and activities have had to be cancelled.

“Faced with the challenge of a locked-down community over the treasured May 11, the directors of Somerset Day have stood their ground by rolling up their sleeves to reach out and support all kinds of endeavours and help them through this difficult time.”

Litter cleared for award challenge TWO school friends have been litter picking in Wells to help clean up the city and do something good for the planet.

Bo Jackson and Astrid Gospodariu, who are in Year 9 at Wells Blue School, went out picking up rubbish several times over a period of three months, and in doing so completed the volunteering section of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award they are both working towards.

“We chose litter picking because we wanted to do something good and give back to our planet,” said Bo. “We just went all over Wells, mostly in town and around parks.

“We think that the situation needs to improve massively, there was so much litter

everywhere and it’s not fair for people to litter and leave everyone else to deal with it.

“By doing litter picking, our minds opened up to those who maybe don’t have a home in Wells having to live in all of it, and how we need to do better for our planet.”

The girls were assisted with the loan of equipment by Councillor Celia Wride, who has been organising litter picks around Wells for a couple of years.

Bo and Astrid are due to go on an expedition in June as the final part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award challenge.

Councillor Laura Waters was not permitted to vote because LOCATION her link to the others was PLAN lost temporarily, meaning she could not hear the entire debate.

Another technical issue meant that board chair Councillor Damon Hooton had to hand over the chairmanship to deputy chair Councillor Nigel Hewitt-Cooper because other members could not always hear him clearly.

Statements were read out at the start of the meeting from two members of the public who had complained about the public being denied the right to speak. They will receive written responses from the council.

Warning sign for charabancs stolen A MUCH loved piece of village heritage has been stolen during the lockdown.

The sign warning that ‘this road is not suitable for charabancs’ has been removed from its post near Wookey Hole Caves.

Owned by the Caves, it is believed to date back nearly a century.

It advised early coach parties to the attraction to avoid attempting the scenic route home via the narrow, winding lane to Deer Leap and Priddy.

THERE was strong opposition to plans for new cottages at Homestead Park in Wookey Hole when St Cuthbert Out Parish Council’s planning committee considered the application.

The proposals were debated at a meeting held via Zoom on April 22.

Daniel Medley of Wookey Hole Caves has applied to Mendip District Council for permission to build nine three-bedroom dwellings with associated parking and upgrade to the existing access, following demolition of a 4/5-bedroom house and three park homes, the relocation of one park home and the removal of one park home plot.

Residents Ivor Tetley and Julia Scarth voiced concerns about the scheme, as did most of the committee members, including concerns over design, access, health and safety aspects, wildlife, and housing density.

Councillor Ian Humphreys said: “This development as it S5928 / 100C stands would not fit in with the village at all and is therefore completely unacceptable.”

Councillors voted to recommend rejecting the application.

A NEW community hub and eight houses in Coxley were given the go ahead at a ‘virtual’ meeting of Mendip District Council’s planning board.

Members approved an application for outline planning permission at a meeting on April 22 that was streamed live online.

There was enthusiastic support for the proposed scheme, on land next to the houses that have replaced the Pound Inn. Landowners Guy and Sarah Roberts have said they will sell approximately half the land to the Coxley Community Land Trust for £1 upon the granting of planning permission.

Planning documents suggest that the community building could incorporate such facilities as a cafe, a shop and a function space for various activities.

Ward member Councillor Lucie Taylor-Hood said that it was an application from people who live in the community – the Coxley Community Land Trust – and for the people of Coxley.

“It’s something I welcome and applaud, especially in these testing times when we’ve all learned how important communities are to us,” she said. She said that as the site is included in Mendip’s emerging Local Plan, it was difficult to argue against, and added: “I think it’s a great application for Coxley and I think it will bring a lot of benefit to people.”

first seeing the sign as a boy in the early 1960s. He said: “I learned to swim in the open air pool which was then operating on the Caves estate.

“Its wording always amused my dad every time we visited.”

Now a village resident, Cllr Cannon hopes the sign will be returned.

“I suspect it was taken as a prank by somebody with, understandably, too much time on their hands,” he said.

“If they return it to the Caves, as far as I’m concerned that would be an end to the matter.”

Plans for two new restaurants WELLS could be getting two new restaurants after separate applications were submitted to Mendip District Council.

One application relates to what was previously the Subhouse restaurant in Princes Road. It seeks permission for the change of use of the existing building to A3 (restaurant and cafe) and A5 (hot food and takeaway) use, with a singlestorey rear extension to replace and extend the existing rear extension.

Another restaurant is being planned in the Market Place building currently used as Wells Post Office, once the post office moves to Peacocks. An application has been made to Mendip District Council for prior approval to change the Market Place site from shop use to restaurant.

Coronavirus outbreak halts bid to save Wells Moat Boat Races ATTEMPTS to save this year’s Wells Moat Boat Races have been halted because of the coronavirus outbreak.

“When we announced, at the beginning of the year, that the City of Wells Lions would no longer be organising the Moat Boat Races we offered our support and experience to any group or organisation willing to step in,” said Lions president Paul Clegg.

“We know this event is one of the top free family attractions in the calendar, so we have been keen to seek out interested parties.

“This event takes months of planning and with the uncertainty created by the coronavirus, affecting all public events this year, the decision has been taken to abandon attempts to stage the Moat Boat Races for 2020.”

The boat races first took place in the 1960s and after a couple of breaks have been staged each year since 2002 on August Bank Holiday Monday.

“Our organisation does not have the resources to take the lead on such a large event, so have always assisted our friends at Wells Lions in the running of the event.

“Due to multiple issues, the Lions took the difficult decision to stand back from the event.

Lacking the resources to carry on without them, the Air Cadets had to step away too.

“The event has always meant a lot to our cadets – a valuable team-building activity for both cadets and staff.

“Earlier this year, the Lions had managed to secure some much needed and valuable help to get the event paperwork and

permissions in place for the 2020 event. We were more than happy to do our bit – which was to ensure that all the activities on the water were organised to the best of our abilities.

“We had even managed to secure a fly-past from one of the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Spitfires.

“We hope the 2021 event will be able to go ahead, and as before, we would be happy to assist any organisation which steps up to head the event.”

Wells Town Clerk Steve Luck said the city council is willing to offer help and advice with the administration for any organisation running the Boat Races, as this can be difficult for volunteer groups.

Mental health beds consultation ends THE consultation on the proposal to move mental health beds from St Andrews Ward in Wells to Yeovil has come to an end.

Fit for my Future, Somerset’s strategy for health and care services, concluded its consultation on the future location of acute inpatient mental health services for adults of working age, and the engagement on the early thinking about future community health and care services for people in Somerset, on April 12.

Three songs make shortlist HETTA Falzon, a Year 11 pupil at Wells Cathedral School, has had three of her original songs shortlisted in a songwriting competition.

The songs were selected from hundreds of entries across the UK for shortlisting amongst the top 60 finalists in Song Academy’s Young Songwriter of the Year competition in the 13- to 18-year-old category.

Hetta, from Wells, is a member of the school’s vocal department and the commercial, rock and pop department, and is one of only two finalists to have more than one song selected.

The panel of judges includes Tom Odell, Imelda May, Miranda Cooper, Eg White, Emily Philips, Sacha Skarbek, Harley Alexander, Paul Adam, Dan Gillespie Sells, Sodajerker and Janet Devlin.

The top 10 songs will be announced in May, with the top three songs and winners announced in June and a live Young Songwriter 2020 showcase planned for November in London.

Day reimagined THE International Workers’ Day parade, rally and fun day that takes place in Wells each year will not be going ahead because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The event is put on each year by the local constituency Labour party for the people of Somerset and the surrounding areas.

This year instead, organisers are looking at other ways of producing memorabilia, virtual films and documentaries in honour of workers at the beginning of May. The day has been celebrated by workers around the world since 1890 to commemorate a demonstration held on May 4, 1886. An event in Chicago of workers asking for an eight-hour working day ended with gunfire, deaths and the arrest of seven of the leaders.

The Bishop’s Palace in Wells may be closed to visitors but one person at least is still keeping busy – head gardener James Cross. There are still jobs that need doing in the 14 acres of gardens which James is managing almost entirely singlehanded, with a little help from Bishop Peter’s wife Jane Hancock, who is said to be handy with a spade. The gardens are as beautiful as ever at this time of year, when the magnolia blooms and hundreds of tulips emerge. There is evidence that the gardens existed here even before Bishop Jocelyn began work on building the Palace in about 1220. Today they have Grade II listed garden status due to their special historic nature, and in 2016 were acknowledged by the Royal Horticultural Society by being made a “Partner Garden”.

This status is awarded to gardens of “outstanding and exceptionally high standards of planting and design” – a great achievement for James and his team. Meanwhile, in other signs of normality at the Palace, the swans are being fed when they ring the bell, and Grace has laid several eggs and is now sitting on her nest.

Milestone reached with fears over funds DORSET and Somerset Air Ambulance has just celebrated its 20th anniversary.

The service went online for the very first time at 8am on March 21, 2000; 52 minutes later it was tasked to its first mission.

Back then, the service, which is still based at Henstridge Airfield, operated during daylight hours in a Bölkow 105 helicopter and carried a crew of two paramedics and a pilot.

Its 20th anniversary sees it operating the most advanced air ambulance helicopter of its class in the world, delivering the highest possible standard of pre-hospital clinical care to the people of Dorset and Somerset for 19 hours a day.

The charity is marking the anniversary with a ‘20 Years By Your Side’ initiative which aims to showcase how far it has come over the years with thanks to public support. An area has been developed on the website which gives information on the history of the charity, its key milestones, an insight into what happens when the air ambulance is tasked to an incident and a number of stories from the patients who have needed help.

Bill Sivewright, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance CEO, said: “Over the years, technology, clinical practice, regulation and even patient expectation have changed dramatically. However,

however, we also know that they appreciate the life-chances that Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance can bring. In the last 20 years we have come so far. n NEWS Railway’s 150th anniversary

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS U3A SARAH Villiers might have been a volunteer cleaner at Lytes Carey, the National Trust’s property near Somerton, but it inspired her and fellow U3A members, Nick and Jenny Nichols, to do further research into the life of turn of the 20th century men and women “in service”.

Sarah is an historian, writer and well-known local lecturer, who stepped in at the last moment when the original speaker booked became ill. She subtitled her talk Scrubbing for the Squirearchy, based on her own and the Nichols’ research.

The house in the 19th century belonged to the Jenner family, who restored it and gave it an Arts and Crafts style garden.

The standard master/mistress attitude to servants was that they were “lucky”.

The reality was that they had food and a roof over their heads.

Generally the masters were detached from the servants, their attitude ignorant and pompous.

In 1900, six men and one boy, who left school at 12, worked in the garden, the head gardener overseeing the whole estate.

Henry Board, aged 35, was one of the estate labourers. He had 19 children, and generously, he was paid an extra one shilling (5p) to cover the considerable cost of his family. He was the chauffeur and head groom.

In the kitchen there was one cook, Mrs Moxley, and three maids. Gertrude the parlour maid married Eldred Trundle, who later became head gardener.

Staff were usually recruited from the local area by word of mouth, but during the First World War and after, when labour became scarce and the social hierarchy was turned upside down, ads were put in The Lady magazine, and later The Needlewoman.

One of the housekeepers, Mrs Turnball, ran the house like a military commander, cleaning, supervising orders and deliveries, organising staff time off, the beating of carpets, emptying the cesspit.

Servants were only allowed three matches each for their fires, and not allowed to pick fruit from the ground.

Mr Jenner had a valet who laid out his clothes for morning riding, lunch, tea and dinner.

At 4am the house fires were lit. Scullery maids drew water, and scrubbed floors. They were 14 or 15 years old. The family had their bed linen changed twice a week, the servants monthly. The master’s collars and shirts were sent to London for cleaning.

Time off was limited for servants to alternate Sundays.

During the 1920s and 30s there were fewer servants due to the introduction of mechanisation such as vacuum cleaners and bathroom taps. But still 7lb smoothing irons were used. Lavender and citron peel were placed among clothes to keep moths at bay.

Outdoor servants included a coachman, and a gamekeeper to supply birds for two weeks of shooting. Gardeners fed the house and sold produce locally.

The groom and stable boys provided all the requirements for hunting twice a week.

During the First World War, the masters were good employers and sent £1 extra over army pay to those servants called up.

Eldred Trundle earned £60 per year. If a man cultivated an acre plus of land he was exempt from army duty.

All the staff survived the war, and the government paid them 28 days full pay. In 1911 medical insurance was introduced for all workers, and in 1913 a Servants’ Union was allowed. In 1900 there were 1.5 million servants in the UK, and Sarah pointed out that there are still many, often called “helpers”.

Sir William Jenner was very much a benign employer and left money to his servants in his will.

Lytes Carey was left to the National Trust in 1947.

This talk was delivered in Sarah Villiers’ own inimitable style, with often theatrical good humour.

She held the fascinated audience in the palm of her hand. We thank her for that.

SUNDAY April 5, 2020, was the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Cheddar Valley & Yatton Railway from Yatton to Wells.

To commemorate this event the Wells Railway Fraternity was due to hold an exhibition in Wells Town Hall showing models, photos, artefacts etc of the line. Due to coronavirus, this event was cancelled.

It is hoped that at some time in the future some of the items that were due to be shown will be able to be displayed.

It was planned that the exhibition would be open to the public from 10.30am to 4pm with free entry.

When the line was opened to the temporary platform at Cheddar on August 3, 1869, there was a special event at Axbridge.

There were no celebrations when the line was opened to Wells. In fact there was to be no station at Tucker Street as the line was to terminate at the East Somerset Station. This was not permitted by the Board of Trade, so Tucker Street Station came into existence.

The line became known as the Strawberry Line when it was realised that strawberries could be grown on the southern slopes of the Mendip Hills at Axbridge, Cheddar and Draycott at the beginning of the 1900s.

The season was very short, only a few weeks, but the trains that took the strawberries away were given strict priority over all other trains. The fruit was sent to Birmingham and places north, in fact some fruit reached Dublin.

Gates stay shut PLANS by the National Garden Scheme to launch the 2020 garden visiting season with 585 new gardens and a record number of planned openings have been put on hold.

As a result of the coronavirus outbreak, the charity’s trustees decided that all National Garden Scheme gardens – which usually include some in the Wells area – will be closed to the public until further notice.

This is the first time in the charity’s 93-year history that all the gardens have been closed.

Company answers call for equipment BARRATT Homes and David Wilson Homes have donated defibrillators from their sites in Somerset, including Wells, to help in the fight against coronavirus.

The defibrillators, worth more than £900 each, came from the David Wilson Homes site at Wookey Hole Road, Wells, and a site in Taunton.

The move was part of a nationwide initiative by Barratt Developments to donate hundreds of defibrillators, usually used on its construction sites, to St John Ambulance.

The health and first aid charity has been supporting people and communities through coronavirus, helping to take the strain from the NHS. It started a nationwide appeal – called Take the Strain – to source equipment to help it in the vital role it is playing, including 1,000 defibrillators.

Responding to the call for help, Barratt donated the defibrillators from all its sites – an estimated 400 worth more

Foundations Up tradespeople have been monitoring the DIY Doctor forum pages and answering users’ questions initially during the first threeweek lockdown period and for longer as it continues.

DIY Doctor offers online help and advice to DIYers, homeowners and the trade on all aspects of home improvement and DIY, and has noticed an increase in visitors to the website needing help with their DIY issues.

Mike Edwards, founder of DIY Doctor, said: “Some people are isolating and can’t have workers in their home. Many are getting around to those little jobs they have been putting off, and others are worried about the financial implications of spending money on home improvement while the financial climate is risky.”

Sophie’s performance earns her England selection ATHLETICS SCHOOLGIRL Sophie Nicholls, from Wells, has been selected for the England Junior Cross Country Team after finishing in the top three out of 344 girls in the recent National Schools Cross Country Championships in Liverpool.

Sophie, who is a Year 9 pupil at Wells Cathedral School, is not yet 14 but ran in the U15 category of the championships, a year younger than this age group.

She is also a vocal specialist at the school.

Wells Cathedral School Director of Sport, Tom Webley, said: “In a field of 344 runners, all kinds of things can go wrong so it’s quite an extraordinary achievement for Sophie. She is a real talent.”

Two other Wells Cathedral School runners who represented Somerset at the championships, Upper Sixth pupils Matthew Howard and Ella Leonard, also both ran well.

Wells City FC 1st team managers Nathan Truckle and Tom CliffordJones have made the following statement about the ending of the football season for lower league teams: OBVIOUSLY we totally understand that the season had to come to an end and everyone’s health and safety is a lot more important than any game of football.

We are disappointed that the season has been instructed as null and void by the FA as it has stopped us from potentially gaining promotion to the Western League premier division.

Saying that, there was always going to be disappointed clubs whichever decision the FA decided to make. Despite the disappointment it was a hugely positive season for us as we easily improved on last season’s 10th place finish, pushing for promotion with only 12 games remaining and being in the

THIS year’s Wells Fun Run, that was due to take place on May 24, has been cancelled.

The popular annual event attracts hundreds of runners to take part in races of varying distances.

In an email sent to runners who had already entered the 2020 races, organisers said: “Reluctantly, the Wells Fun Run 2020 organising committee have had to take the decision to totally cancel this year’s race.

Everything is so uncertain, the autumn calendar is filling up fast with other rescheduled races and, unfortunately, we really don’t have the capacity to process results and issue medals for a virtual race, much as we would like to offer that facility... While you wait for the current, very strange and unprecedented times to pass and for a new normality to resume, take a moment to put Wells Fun Run, Sunday, May 30, 2021, in your diaries.
