Toppled church spire will stand tall again THE spire of St Thomas’ Church in Wells can be reinstated as if it had never been blown down.

That is the view of conservation expert James Preston, who was at the site to collect the fallen stonework soon

after Storm Eunice blew off the top of the spire; and that is what the church community is hoping and praying for, says Chris Jenkins, a Licensed Lay Minister at St Thomas’.

Celebration of ‘richly deserved’ MBE honour MORE than 50 people attended a special event at the Swan Hotel in February to celebrate Wells resident Karen Deverell receiving an MBE. Prince Charles presented the MBE to Karen in a ceremony at Windsor Castle on February 8.

It was awarded for services to children and young people.

Karen worked for the YMCA in Mendip for more than 25 years, including 17 years as the chief executive. After leaving the YMCA, she became a foster carer for Somerset County Council, and a volunteer with Wells Coronavirus Network.

She said of Prince Charles: “I thought he was charming and had a great smile and was softly spoken.”

She continued: “We had a couple of days in Windsor and then held a lunch for excolleague, family and friends at the Swan Hotel on February 13.

This gave me the opportunity to thank all those who have been a part of my 25-year journey at the YMCA in Mendip and South Somerset, and in particular colleagues who had had been part of growing the YMCA from a handful of staff to over 120 across various housing and youth and community projects.

“It has been a wonderful couple of weeks which has brought back fond memories of the YMCA. The YMCA afforded me opportunities to learn and develop, as a staff team we grew the organisation to meet the needs of local young people and I will always be immensely proud of what we achieved together.”

Those who attended the celebration at the Swan were full of praise for Karen. Her mother,

The storm on February 18 prompted a red weather warning and caused power cuts and damage to other property in the area, and brought down trees.

The church was closed for several days afterwards while insurers and structural engineers carried out assessments. A drone sent up for a closer look revealed that there were one or two stones still loose at the top of the spire that needed attention. Capping off the spire was also being considered as it had been left with a hole at the top the size of a dinner plate, with the sky visible from inside the church.

Chris Jenkins said: “We thank God that nobody was hurt, and the way the wind was blowing it blew away from the church. We were so fortunate.

“It came off as a piece and broke up when it hit the ground.

Most of the stonework is not in too bad a state – there’s a feeling that it can be put back together.”

The church opened in 1857.

There was some remedial work on the spire 25 years ago, when there was also some work carried out on the weathervane.

James said that a plan will now be drawn up by those involved to restore the spire and weathervane.

He added: “It does go to show how impressive wind forces are. Historic buildings are particularly vulnerable, and so good upkeep and cyclical maintenance is paramount for all of our built heritage. However, as has been seen on the videos of St Thomas’ Church, nothing was going to stop Mother Nature from showing us her power, and St Thomas’ Church, unfortunately, was her target.”

Approval for return of Barn and Rec THE Bishop’s Barn and Wells Recreation Ground are to be returned to the City of Wells.

Mendip District Council’s Cabinet has approved the transfer of trusteeship of the Wells Recreation Ground charity to Wells City Council.

Subject to Charity Commission authorisation, it means that the city council will become the new

‘caretakers’ of the Barn and Rec. The site was gifted in two parts to the citizens of Wells for community activity in 1887 and 1897. Local government reorganisation in 1974 saw the newly created Mendip District Council handed responsibility for looking after these assets. n From the Town Hall, page 27

‘Slowly and gracefully down it plunged...’

FROM their home in Lewmond Avenue, Nigel Milnes and his wife Maddy watched the St Thomas’ Church spire topple.

Nigel – who took the photographs of it falling on the front page – said: “The first time I noticed something odd was when I was going out for a walk in the morning and the church weathervane was vibrating backwards and forwards like crazy. It didn’t look right.

“When I got home I looked through a pair of binoculars and when I looked at the whole spire I noticed that a gap was appearing at the top, which alarmed me.

“I suddenly thought I’ve got to tell the police so I phoned 999 and they swung into action pretty quickly because I could hear sirens approaching within about 15 or 20 minutes.

“As the winds increased, the gap at the top where it was separated was getting wider and wider and twisting sideways and it was beginning to rock. I just knew that it was going to go.

“It eventually toppled and slowly and gracefully down it plunged.

“Maddy and I were very shocked. There was a stunned silence as we saw it fall.

“We’re obviously desperately sad that it’s happened.

“I’m surprised that it didn’t hit anything on the way down. I don’t know what it weighs, when you look at it on the ground you think that must weigh a tonne or two, falling from that height it could do a lot of damage. It’s fortunate in the direction of the wind, and it’s fortunate that the police and fire people cordoned off the area.”

Comedians to have city laughing again THE Wells Comedy Festival is returning after three years with a line-up that includes Harry Hill, Shaparak Khorsandi and Mark Watson.

Taking place this year from Friday, May 27, to Sunday, May 29, there will be more than 40 comedy shows across four Wells venues: Cedars Hall, Wells Little Theatre (Main House and Rehearsal Room) and new venue The Drama Barn, in Market Street.

Tickets went on sale in early February – and Mike Wozniak’s ‘Zusa: Work-in-Progress’ has already sold out.

Other shows are also selling quickly; tickets for Al Murray, Harry Hill, Isy Suttie, and Lou Sanders are already limited,

and a second performance of ‘Al Murray The Pub Landlord: Gig for Victory’ has been added due to the high demand.

Other acts announced so far include Lou Sanders, Jessica Fostekew, Kiri Pritchard-McLean, Esther Manito and Phil Wang.

Also joining the bill are Nick Helm, Jamali Maddix, Sophie Duker, Paul Foot, Rhys James, Glenn Moore, Harriet Kemsley, Jacob Hawley, Amy Gledhill and Bobby Mair.

More acts will be added to the line-up and announced soon.

Annexe music ambitions starting to become reality Things are coming together nicely with plans to make music at the Portway Annexe, say the Wells Rocks team WITH the Town Hall team getting the building ready, the Portway Annexe is warming up in all senses. The heating is on and the people of Wells and its surrounding communities are proving to be very generous.

Furniture has come out of storage, a school has donated a drum kit, and professional audio equipment, including PA and guitar amps, has been provided by supporters.

The plans for equipped rehearsal rooms are coming together nicely. The idea is to offer three affordable sessions a day, with morning, afternoon and evening slots using two rooms.

If you are in a band looking for a place to be based, we also aim to have a couple of lockable storage cubicles and there will be parking spaces reserved to make unloading and loading easier for you (at the time of use). If you

Schools linking up for special music night THE two secondary schools in Wells are working together to stage a special concert.

Four or five bands from the Blue School and four or five from the Cathedral School will play one after the other on the evening of Friday, March 25.

The venue is Cedars Hall which will be set out with cafestyle tables and chairs. Tickets are free and can be booked at tickets.cedarshallwells.co.uk.

Called The Mayor’s Concert 2022, there will be a collection at the end for Macmillan Cancer Support, which is the Mayor of Wells’ charity for 2021/22.

The original target for the charity was £3,000 but it has already reached £11,000. Now the Mayor, Councillor Philip Welch, aims to reach £15,000 by the time his term of office expires on May 12 with this and five

more fundraiser events.

Blue School head Mark Woodlock said: “We are engaging in a very exciting project to bring forward the young talent that exists in Wells and to give a stage to the musical ability in our area.

This should help our students on their journey to an enriching post-Covid world and we look forward to the support that our community will no doubt give them.”

Finding somewhere to play is difficult at the best of times for most young bands and Covid restrictions have made the situation worse.

“With the huge wealth of talent in its schools and at the Cathedral, Wells could soon become recognised as a Music City,” said Bill Lloyd, Head of Programming, Commissioning and Outreach at Wells Cathedral School. “Cedars Hall is thrilled to be hosting an exciting celebration of this talent in a major new collaboration between the Blue School and Wells Cathedral School showcasing their young bands and singer/songwriters.”

Restaurant shuts after death of general manager ENSEMBLE restaurant in Sadler Street, Wells, has been closed following the sudden death of general manager Simon Leyton.

The news was announced online and in a notice on the restaurant door that read: “We are very sorry to have to report that Simon Leyton, general manager of Ensemble, suddenly passed away last week.

“As many of our regular customers will know, Simon was totally devoted to Ensemble and Ensemble without him would never be the same.

“With this tragic news in mind, we have taken the painful decision to close the restaurant forthwith.

“It is with deep sadness that we have had to take this decision and we would like to thank our many customers for their patronage over the years.”

Action under way to curb graffiti POLICE and local councils are hoping to put a stop to a spate of graffiti that has been blighting Wells.

A man in his 20s is due to be interviewed by police as part of their enquiries into the issue.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: “In recent weeks we have received a number of reports of criminal damage with graffiti being sprayed in Wells.

“Enquiries have been carried out, led by the Wells Neighbourhood Team, to try to identify any individual or individuals involved in the graffiti tagging.

“A male, in his 20s, will attend a voluntary police interview as part of our ongoing enquiries in due course.

“We would like to reassure the community that we will

continue to work closely with partner agencies, including local councils, to tackle any issues relating to antisocial behaviour in Wells.”

Mendip District Council removes graffiti if it is on Mendip property or if the graffiti is grossly offensive. Removing it from private property is the responsibility of the land or property owner.

A spokesperson for the district council said: “Mendip District Council is aware of the increased incidents of graffiti in Wells. We are working with the police to resolve the matter.”

Wells City Council has discussed the problem at a council meeting and with the police, and the council’s Open Spaces team has been helping the district council with the removal of graffiti when possible.

Painting that captures a lost landscape given to museum WELLS & Mendip Museum has agreed to take custody of a 1970 painting composed from the then very new Keward Estate that shows the open space between the estate and ‘old’ Wells.

The painting, looking towards St Cuthbert’s and Tucker Street railway bridge from Keward Avenue, was the work of Frederick Taylor.

He lived on the Keward Estate for 50 years before his death in 2021, and he gradually saw the space fill with new developments, the clearing of the railway remnants and the building of the Strawberry Way bypass.

Wells & Mendip Museum curator, David Walker, was happy to take the painting as it shows the city before much of the 20th-century developments took place.

Frederick’s daughter Lisa Pool said: “Dad was a hobby painter but would have been delighted a painting found a safe home at the museum. He was always very proud to have bought his first house on Keward.”

She has also handed over to the museum a selection of shop and delivery receipts of then well-known Wells trades and shops that were among her father’s possessions.

Help available for venues with putting on live music events HOSPITALITY venues in Wells could benefit from a local scheme aimed at promoting live music sessions.

The Wellspring Fund for Live Music Recovery was set up in lockdown to subsidise events as restrictions eased.

Local musician Paul Cannon who devised the scheme said: “Its aim is to help both the hospitality sector and players who have suffered big losses during the pandemic. I would very much like to hear from places that would like to put on live events but are worried about whether they can afford band fees.”

Wellspring underwrites the fees to guarantee payment for performers. Venue operators are encouraged to donate according to how much extra income the acts have brought in. The scheme also wants to attract sponsors from other local businesses who would like to have their names associated with it.

“The fund has so far raised more than £4,000,” said Paul.

“Most of it has come from individuals but we have also had small grants from Wells City Council and Somerset Community Foundation. Local

“Whatever venues are looking for I am confident I can find the act to suit.”

Apprenticeship scheme launch FOOD producer Charlie Bigham’s launched a new apprenticeship scheme during National Apprenticeship Week in February. The Level 2 Food & Drink Operator qualification has been developed in collaboration with Bridgwater College and is available to current Bigham’s team members as well as those seeking to begin a career in food production.

The 12-month scheme will start in July, with an initial 12 places available for training at the Quarry Kitchen at Dulcote, near Wells. Following completion of the scheme, all participants will have the opportunity to convert to a permanent role working in either the production kitchen or as part of the technical team at Charlie Bigham’s.

Apprenticeship pay starts at £20,000 per annum. Applicants can register their interest in the apprenticeship scheme on the Bigham’s website.

Spring style

Lions charity concert to feature two well-respected local choirs WELLS Lions are staging a charity concert next month, bringing together the talents of two local and highly regarded choirs to St Cuthbert’s Church, Wells, in aid of Children’s Hospice South West.

Glastonbury Male Voice Choir and Wells-based ladies choir Cantabile will be performing at St Cuthbert’s on Friday, April 8, at 7.30pm. Previous concerts organised by Wells Lions have always sold out and raised large sums for local charities.

The 40-strong Glastonbury choir last appeared in Wells in 2019. Last year they performed before a 7,000 crowd at the Glastonbury Extravaganza. The Cantabile Choir is celebrating its

20th anniversary this year. Both choirs perform under the musical direction of Tracey Hansford.

Wells Lions Club President Alan Sanderson said: “We’re delighted to be offering this chance for people to see two highly respected local choirs in concert, and to help us raise funds for a very worthy charity.

We hope it will be another sellout event.”

The concert is being sponsored by Bowley’s Garage in Wells. Tickets cost £10 and can be bought from The Swan Hotel and Wells Tourist Information Centre in the Town Hall.

Daleks to add to fun of jubilee celebrations THE Daleks will be coming to Wells in June to join the city’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations marking the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

People will be able to meet and interact with the famous science-fiction characters at the day-long extravaganza on Sunday, June 5. The Wells Jubilee Celebrations are being organised

The Daleks will be seen again in Wells on June 5 Factory, TIME, Wells Voice and other local organisations.

Activities on June 5 will include a procession of community groups and children in fancy dress, starting at noon from the Recreation Ground.

From there, the route is expected to be along Moat Walk, down

High Street, along Queen Street, back up High Street, along Sadler Street and then through Brown’s Gate on to Cathedral Green, where Lord Lieutenant Annie Maw will present children’s fancy dress prizes.

There will be a Performance Zone on Cathedral Green where a variety of acts will appear, a Tea Party in the Cathedral, a photographic exhibition in Wells Museum, music from local bands on the Bandstand, cookery classes for children in the Bishop’s Barn, and sports activities on the play area side of the Recreation Ground.

There will also be dozens of market stalls, charity stalls and food stalls spread across the various sites.

Wells Rotary President Wendy Ray said: “We plan to have a wonderful and exciting day of various activities and events to celebrate our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We hope that

everyone will come along to these celebrations, it will be a joyful and memorable day for all.” n As part of the jubilee celebrations in Wells, community choirs based in Wells and surrounding area are being invited to perform a 20-minute slot on the Cathedral Green on June 5. Choirs will perform from 3pm, and at 5.30pm all the choirs will be invited to unite for a rendition of Jerusalem, with an orchestra. Special teddy bear repaired, and new leader announced Julie Wright provides a Wells Repair Cafe update OVER the past few months, our brilliant fixers have continued to complete repairs of various kinds, including vacuum cleaners, radios, printers and a bear. Wells resident, Mary, contacted me about her family’s teddy, which was already preloved when it came into her family in 1937. The bear had belonged to her sister, Anne,

who sadly died last year, and would have so much to tell of wartime experiences in Bristol, as well as of much happier times, being dressed and cuddled.

Clever seamstress, Jane, not only repaired the teddy’s ailing body, with kapok from Freecycle, but also made a waistcoat from repurposed fabric. Mary’s grandchildren are now looking forward to making

Thanksgiving service and tree-planting WELLS Cathedral School celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne with a thanksgiving service and tree planting ceremony.

At 9am on February 7, all pupils from the Junior School and Senior School gathered in Wells Cathedral for a special service of thanksgiving, which incorporated words, prayers and music.

The school welcomed a number of special guests to the service, including the High Sheriff of Somerset, Thomas Sheppard, Mayor of Wells Philip Welch, George Bunting (representing Old Wellensians), Arnold Wills (representing the Chorister Trust) as well as Governors of the School.

After the service, these guests headed back to the school where they were joined by the Vice Lord Lieutenant for Somerset, David Godsal – standing in for the Lord

the Queen’s Green Canopy, and was the first of many plantings that will take place at the school this year.

The tree planting ceremony brought recollections of a visit to the school in 1978 by The Prince of Wales, who is the school’s Patron. In celebration of the Silver Jubilee, he planted a Blue Atlas cedar tree on Cedar’s Lawn.

Forty-four years later, the tree has grown and flourished and is much loved by pupils, parents, staff and visitors.

Parish council trying to ensure village voices heard ONE of Somerset’s largest parish councils is stressing the role parishes play as the county prepares for a radical shake-up of local government.

St Cuthbert Out Parish Council serves nearly 4,000 people and 11 villages around Wells.

Its chairman, Councillor Marcel Hayden, said: “Our role in representing local residents will become even more important when district councils like Mendip disappear and their powers are taken over by a single county-wide authority based in Taunton.”

Community Networks (LCNs) to keep it informed of concerns at parish level. Individual parish councils will have a seat around the table but no voting rights.

St Cuthbert Out is leading a campaign to establish a coalition of rural parishes to ensure that village voices are heard and respected in distant corridors of power.

Under the changes, parish councils will continue to provide all their current services and can request to take on more.

Cllr Hayden said: “What we do at the moment may seem ‘low level’ to some but these services would be very much missed at local level if we weren’t here.”

Councillor nominations required soon THE clock is ticking down for candidates to come forward if they want to stand for election in Somerset in May. Councillors will be chosen for city, town and parish councils, including Wells City Council and St Cuthbert Out Parish Council, and the new unitary council being created in April 2023.

The creation of the unitary council is the first major change to the way the county is governed in almost 50 years. New councillors will build a new kind of local government, that will shape the county for decades.

City, town and parish councils will – if they wish – play a bigger part in making sure that Somerset’s services are the best they can be. More powers will be

devolved, and grassroots councils will be given the chance to take on greater responsibilities. Wells Voice reported last month on Wells City Council’s ambitions for the assets and services it would like to run when the changes take place.

Nominations for those interested in standing as a councillor can be submitted to the appropriate district council office from March 22 and close at 4pm on April 5.

For the county, 110 councillors will be elected who will serve a five-year term. For their first year, the councillors will take responsibility for all current county council services and oversee the local government reorganisation to

establish a single unitary council on April 1, 2023.

District councils will remain until March 31, 2023, and the councillors serving on them will continue in their roles until that date.

From April 1, 2023, the 110 councillors of the unitary council will be responsible for services that are currently delivered by the county and four district councils, ranging from adults and children’s social care to highways, housing, planning and licensing.

City, town, and parish council elections also take place on May 5, offering the chance for people to stand up for their community at the grassroots. They too will serve a five-year term.

New Poppy Appeal organiser wanted AFTER seven years as voluntary Poppy Appeal organiser for the Wells area, Derek Cooper has decided the time has come to step down.

He says it has been an honour to look after the yearly Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal for the city. In the time that he has been in the role, more than £150,000 has been raised.

In addition to the appeal, Derek has also been part of the organising team for the yearly Poppy Concert, the Cathedral Thanksgiving Service to mark 100 years of the Royal British Legion in 2021 and the summer concert at The Bishop’s Palace.

Derek said: “I have also enjoyed helping the organising of both the Remembrance service in the Market Place on November 11 each year and the annual service in St Cuthbert’s

Derek says that the job is very interesting, rewarding and varied, and whoever takes on the role will get a lot of help from him as he is staying on the committee as consultant to assist the new person.

“All of the above has only been possible with an amazing team to help me and they will be available to the new person, and the wonderful support of the public and businesses,” said Derek. “To all of them I say a very big thank you.”

Locomotive featured in latest window COLIN Price, Chairman of Wells Railway Fraternity and a former mayor of Wells, was delighted with the completion of the latest window of the Wells in Mosaic depicting a steam locomotive.

Having provided mosaic artist Ruth Ames-White with photos and background, he was invited to the studio to see the finished piece.

Wells has a great railway history. In the first half of the 20th century three railway stations provided passenger and freight links across the South West and beyond.

The Bulleid West Country class engine, the City of Wells, arrived in Wells in 1949 to be named by the Mayor of Wells.

To make this possible, as it was a ‘mainline locomotive’, bridges and other infrastructure had to be strengthened at a significant cost.

The huge reductions of the rail network in the early 1960s meant that the City of Wells was sent to Barry in South Wales to

was renamed in Lancashire, and Colin was very proud and pleased to deputise for the Mayor of Wells on the occasion and to ‘cut the ribbon’.

The engine now lives at

the only heritage railway in a metropolitan area, in Bury in Greater Manchester.

A painting of the City of Wells locomotive, by David Fisher, was commissioned in 2008 for the 40th anniversary of the Railway Fraternity and now hangs in the Town Hall, and many more photos and images can be seen in the Cheddar Valley Inn in Tucker Street.

Ruth said: “This window has been quite a learning curve, not only about the history of the railway in Wells but also depicting something mechanical is quite different from the majority of the images in the mosaic.”

Palace offering mosaic sponsorship opportunities THE Bishop’s Palace is supporting the Wells in Mosaic project by offering sponsorship opportunities. The Palace is one of the iconic buildings in Wells that is being recreated in mosaic as part of Wells in Mosaic. The completed work, a six-metre wide circle, in the form of a walkable map of the historic city centre, will include many other famous landmarks and features.

Siobhan Goodwin, Community Engagement Manager at The Bishop’s Palace, said: “We would really like to support this community project by sponsoring The Bishop’s Palace building, so beautifully recreated in mosaic. Chance to impress judges as Bloom competition returns WELLS in Bloom volunteers will be out and about in July, judging gardens within the Wells city boundary for the first time in three years.

The pandemic halted many things but certainly did not stop people gardening, so here is an opportunity to show what has been done.

The categories are the same as before. Private gardens can enter to be judged whether small or large, front or back, or patio. Businesses in Wells are invited to enter their frontages or courtyards.

The criteria for judging this year will include two new categories for gardeners who can show sustainability and a friendly approach to the environment as well as presentation of planting.

Emma Conner was awarded Silver-Gilt for private house front garden in 2019. She said: “When I moved to Wells ten years ago, I set about redesigning the whole of my front garden which was an overgrown rockery. It was a new venture for me which was challenging at times but my

neighbours in Hawkers Lane always provided me with lots of encouragement.

“I believe that gardening is a great way of bringing communities together, they bring so much joy to everyone.

For me, the competition was an opportunity to share what I had created – after all, seeing others appreciate your garden is the best reward of all.”

Book completes story of Old Almshouse THE history of Wells Old Almshouse has never been written – until now. On February 2, the launch of a new book

by Jean Imray on this subject took place at the City of Wells Almshouses.

Jean Imray, a former Wells City Archivist and a Trustee of Wells & Mendip Museum, spent many years researching this detailed book. At the time of her death in 2015, she was close to completing it. A number of her former friends and colleagues felt that it would be a fitting tribute to her to ensure that the work was published.

Accordingly, three of them have edited the book and prepared it for print. It is being published by Wells & Mendip Museum and the printed copies are being funded largely by the Wells Local History Workshop (of which Jean was an active member), along with Wells City Council and Wells & Mendip Museum.

Most towns and cities across England had almshouses to provide shelter and sustenance for elderly residents who were no longer able to support themselves properly. The first almshouse in Wells was founded in 1436 under the will of Bishop Nicholas Bubwith for 24 residents.

That number was augmented by six in 1615 under the will of Bishop John Still and by a further four in 1777 under the will of Bishop Edward Willes. These together formed what is known as Wells Old Almshouse. They and other

Wells almshouses were brought together in 2004 to form the City of Wells Almshouses.

Dr Julia Wood, Wells City Archivist, said before the event: “We are very excited

that the launch will be taking place in the original guildhall of Bishop Bubwith’s medieval Almshouse building. It is also extremely fitting that those present will include the Dean of Wells Cathedral and the Mayor and Town Clerk of Wells City Council. They will represent the historical link of the Cathedral and the city council with Wells Old Almshouse – the Dean & Chapter and the city corporation jointly administered Wells Old Almshouse from its foundation in 1436.”

The illustrated book, entitled Wells Old Almshouse, has been released in two formats. There

are a limited number of printed deposit copies plus a PDF release.

The bound deposit copies are being donated to eight libraries and archives, including Wells City Library, Wells & Mendip Museum Library, Wells City Archives and the Somerset Studies Library, and to the City of Wells Almshouses.

The PDF version was also launched on February 2 and is available for download for free from Wells & Mendip Museum’s website (wellsmuseum.org.uk).

In this way Jean Imray’s text and research are being made freely available.

Lisa gearing up for cycling challenge WELLS resident Lisa Sweeting is preparing for one of the biggest challenges of her life – cycling 970 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

She hopes that the marathon ride will help her raise £2,500 for the charity Plan International UK that works to create equality for girls and protect the rights of children worldwide.

She is also organising a Craft, Cakes and Coffee Morning in Henton Village Hall on Sunday, March 13 (10am-noon), to raise money towards the target.

Money will be raised through the hire of the tables, cakes, coffee and a raffle, and Lisa is looking

The Ride Across Britain cycle challenge starts on September 10 and is due to finish nine days later on September 18. Lisa has been going out on long training rides around the region as she builds her endurance for the event.

“The last cycle challenge I did was London to Paris in September 2017 which was around 283 miles over five days,” she said.

“I also climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in 2019 but this will certainly be my biggest challenge yet, and even for Paris I only trained up to 75 miles in one day so this is a huge step up.”

An exhibition which tells the stories of some of the patients and staff of ‘The Asylum for the Lunatic Poor’ that was established outside of Wells in the 1840s has opened at The Bishop’s Palace. The Somerset and Bath Lunatic Asylum 1848-1918: A Photographic Exhibition was originally displayed at Wells & Mendip Museum last year, and comes to The Bishop’s Palace with additional stories and research. New gilets give city’s Ambassadors distinct identity THE Wells Ambassadors are “good to go” for a relaunch in March following the new year break and a get together at the Town Hall, hosted by the Mayor, Philip Welch, when their new blue gilets were introduced

and tried on. Ross Young, who organises this 20-strong team of volunteers, said: “It was good to meet up with those who could make it and all approved of the new gilets.

an identity which will help them stand out for visitors.”

He added: “The feedback we have had since the launch last April has been hugely encouraging from both visitors and locals alike and the team

Charter Fair returning in May

ST John Ambulance is planning to run some Community First Aid awareness sessions at its headquarters in Charter Way, Wells.

They will be on Wednesday, March 16, from 8pm-9.30pm, and Wednesday, April 20, from 8pm-9.30pm The sessions are free but numbers will be limited.

The Civic Opening of a previous Wells May Charter Fair will also return for its 30th year, organised by Richard Green, an honorary member of the

Showmen’s Guild. Opening the 821st event will be the Mayor of Wells Councillor Philip Welch, accompanied by the Mayoress Caroline Welch, and will take place at 11am.

“The return of the historic May Charter Fair is a welcome sign of ‘normal life’ reviving in Wells after the pain of the pandemic,” said Cllr Welch.

Launch of new WI group to meet demand SO many women want to join the Women’s Institute in Wells that a second group is being set up to meet the demand.

The new group will meet on the third Monday of the month and will be known as Wells Monday WI. The first meeting will be at Wells Football Club, Rowdens Road, on Monday, March 21, at 7pm.

The existing Wells WI, founded in 2010, currently has 70 members, the maximum capacity, and has a long waiting list to join.

It meets on the first Tuesday of each month at Wells & District Museum, and is going to be renamed Wells Tuesday WI to differentiate it from the new Wells Monday WI. Sharon Dawkins is starting the second group at the suggestion of Ann Chadwick, Membership Chair for the Somerset Federation of WIs, after trying to join the original

“It’s very much done in conjunction with them, it’s a sister group, and we are going to be doing some joint things,” said Sharon, who will be the new group’s first President.

“There seems to be such a demand for this type of thing. It is open for anybody who would like to come along, and I see it as very much being run by the

people who want to take part.”

Sharon, aged 53, has two grown-up daughters, and said that she was at a point in her life when she was thinking: “What do I do for me?” She was brought up in Wells but moved away when she joined the police force.

She has since returned to the city and now works part-time as a matron in a boarding house at Wells Cathedral School.

Afternoon Choirs to sing together WELLS’ popular Good Afternoon Choir is joining forces with the Cheddar Valley Good Afternoon Choir to present their first concert of the year at St Thomas’ Church, Wells, on Friday, March 11.

The Wells Good Afternoon Choir, led by Grenville Jones, and the Cheddar Valley Good Afternoon Choir, led by Kate Lynch, have more than 80 enthusiastic members who are busy preparing their programme for the concert.

It will support the South Western Ambulance Service, Wells in Bloom and The Space, charities all chosen by the members of the choirs.

Cheddar Valley Good Afternoon Choir also meet every Tuesday from 1pm-3pm in Shipham Hall.

TIC offers coach tickets services THE Wells Tourist Information Centre at Wells Town Hall has begun selling tickets for the London Superfast service operated by Berrys Coaches. The daily coach service to London picks up and drops off at Wells Bus Station.

Spring fever arrives at Stoberry Garden SPRING is such a wonderful time of year somehow, you feel as though the Earth is giving birth as everything comes alive; although snowdrops have never been a major part of Stoberry, but there is a lovely bank covered in white clouds of snowdrops – the giant snowdrops – Leucojum giant snowflake.

Hellebores are also looking lovely, and Dutch irises are just showing and we are starting to get that lovely rustic red of new leaves emerging from the ground and daffodil buds are appearing everywhere, and it provides such a lift that says winter must be coming to an end.

This will be an interesting year at Stoberry. In the gardening world everything has been a little topsy-turvy, and looking back at the notes from last year we are at least a month ahead of ourselves, keeping fingers crossed that we do not get a heavy frost that could harm the newly emerging growth.

Many of our wonderful visitors who know the garden will be aware of how careful we have to be to balance the interplay between landscape and floral garden; do enjoy the two newly planted areas, and why not join us for a coffee and a slice of cake?

We hope that our visitors who join us for tea and a slice of cake on Wednesdays and Thursdays and some weekends will enjoy this area as we create a completely new feeling. There are changes afoot at Stoberry and we still have to ask you to book appointments, but this is because we wish people to enjoy our space and beauty without having to constantly jostle with others.

Certain plant genres like Gunnera are planted against a drywall just to show people how plants can live in different areas as long as you give them what they need; so here we have placed big containers that hold the moisture and planted these in the soil in a position that provides the sunshine required, and the beautiful Gunnera are emerging – a moisture-loving plant thriving in an area of dry planting.

Efforts of older people deserving of praise

YOU would assume, would you not, that as we work with business people and new entrepreneurs, we would spend most of our time with younger members of the population.

However, many people who start their own businesses in our area have already had a lengthy career in the corporate world.

Some decide to leave a more high-pressured environment so they can spend more time with their families and to address the need to adapt their lives for a potentially healthier work/life balance. Many of these people are around 40 years old. Some of these new business people have taken a complete change of direction – for example, a head of IT in a large multinational company may decide that being a potter is much more his style.

A top lawyer may become a gardener. We have seen and assisted many such moves over the years we have been in

business, and it is really good to see people blossoming in their new lives.

Let’s not stop there, however, because life, we know so well, merely begins at 40! It would be fair to say that we live in an active and pretty vibrant community. There are a lot of events each and every year – some of which we are proud to be involved with. There is the Wells Food Festival, the Wells Festival of Literature, and Wells Art Contemporary to name but three.

To add to this, we have recently benefitted from the amazing Wells Coronavirus Network, who have been collecting and delivering prescriptions and shopping to the housebound of Wells, as well as acting as marshals at the local vaccination centres.

places of interest, has resulted in Wells winning the Coach Friendly Destination Award at the British Coach Tourism Awards ceremony for 2020. On top of all these there are the sporting events, comedy, music, film festivals and so much more. If I listed them all, there would be no space for anything else here.

Now, an important fact about a very high proportion of these events and festivals is that the shakers and movers who have started them and who, in so many cases still run them and organise them year on year, are people who are proud and active septuagenarians and octogenarians. People who continue to actively and effectively serve their community without any fuss and bother, and whose selflessness and dedication enable us all to live richer, more fulfilled and happier lives in our beautiful city.

So, if you’re visiting a

grandparent or older friend and they seem to be out of breath when they open the door to you, it’s worth remembering that it’s possibly not because getting out of the chair was difficult, but because they’ve just hurried home from a meeting to organise the Food Festival, or from taking a shift as a volunteer at the Cathedral or Bishop’s Palace or from organising an event for us all to enjoy somewhere in Wells. These people are as vital to the health and well-being and economy of our city as any number of entrepreneurs and I, for one, salute them. Also, I hope fervently that I have anything like their vitality, energy and spirit when I retire.

By the way, have you ever tried dancing The Time Warp from The Rocky Horror Show at a 70th birthday party? I have – it was really good fun even if keeping up with the birthday boy was quite a challenge!

Pair taking on 24-hour cycle challenge TWO Wells Cricket Club players, Dan Vassalli and Jack Moore, are taking on an extreme endurance challenge in March to raise money for mental health charity MIND and the cricket club.

The challenge they have set themselves is to cycle together for 24 hours continuously on static bikes. It will take place from 10am on Saturday, March 19, at The Bishop’s Palace in Wells, and will be open to the public so that people can go along and cheer them on.

Dan and Jack are both local men who first met at primary school and have been challenging each other in sports ever since as well as being team-mates at Wells CC. Jack said: “We wanted to take on a radical challenge together and raise money for two great causes. The mental health charity MIND really means a lot to us.

So the other 50 per cent of the money we raise will go towards the club’s fundraising efforts for a new digital scoreboard.”

Funding available for road safety projects WELLS Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) continue to maintain a high level of visibility throughout Wells and surrounding areas, whether it be via patrols, attendance at community events or even ‘Come Meet Us’ surgeries (previously known as beat surgeries).

When engaging with members of the public, a common issue that comes up is road safety and speeding.

Wells NPT work closely with community Speedwatch groups, and conduct regular random speed check patrols in order to combat such behaviour and antisocial behaviour driving.

With this in mind, I would like to invite local groups and voluntary organisations in the community to come together to create a project with the aim of (but not limited to) improving road safety, reducing accident and casualty figures, and providing education and training

Grants of up to £5,000 can be awarded from the Road Safety Fund funded by Avon and Somerset Police, but the grants do not cover:

provide 20 fully funded IAM advanced driving courses for drivers aged under 25 who live in Bristol, Somerset and North Somerset to benefit from a series of observed runs, with a qualified observer who will provide advice and guidance to prepare for an advanced driving challenge. This scheme is a great example of how the Road Safety Fund can be used as it aims to provide advice and skills to young drivers to prevent them being involved in any accidents.

By Georgie Robbins INDEPENDENT retailer Sage & Bumble is on the move but have no fear, it’s only heading round the corner.

Having spent the first three years in the courtyard on Market Street, they have decided to take the plunge and relocate to the former Britelly shop on Queen Street. Joining what is known as the independent sector of Wells high street, Sage & Bumble will be expanding on their existing range which already boasts more than 120 fragrances in handmade wax melts as well as unique gifts and soaps.

Shop owner Jo Day says of the move: “We are extremely happy to be joining all of the other well established businesses on Queen Street. We have lots of plans for the new shop and cannot wait to show you all.”

Relief and excitement swept the traders when it was revealed that Sage & Bumble would be joining them in March adding to the already vibrant community.

Lee Borastero of Toymaster on Queen Street said: “It’s great to see this really popular business joining Queen Street, we hope they do extremely well in the new premises.”

The move is scheduled for March 1 with the promise of exciting new ranges being added.

Until then they will be working hard to ensure there will be little interruption to their regular service and plenty of Mother’s Day goodies for the grand opening.

Band spreads musical happiness FIFTEEN players from Wells City Band were delighted to be asked to play for the residents of Torrwood nursing home at South Horrington.

On an overcast, chilly Sunday afternoon they serenaded from the garden the 50 residents looking out of the windows, who enjoyed ‘Music For All Occasions’.

The players then moved on to play for a staunch supporter, Jean Hague. Smiles from her

neighbours created a happy atmosphere as the musicians played from the pavement.

Jean and Alan Hague were instrumental in helping the band to visit Bad Durkheim, Wells’ German twinning town. Alan was President of Wells City Band from 1995-2003, and supported it with enthusiasm when he was a councillor and also Mayor of Wells. The legacy of their commitment is found in the scrapbooks of the band.

IT is a sign of the times that we all need to be aware of fraudsters in many areas of our lives involving finance.

Any house buyers should bear in mind the increase of scams with the intention of defrauding the unwitting buyer out of hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Criminals have been trying to target property purchases, attempting to fool people into transferring house purchase monies to them. Most of the time this involves criminals pretending to be from the buyer’s solicitors to con them into paying money into the criminal’s account.

These can be highly sophisticated schemes because after all it is a fraudster’s job to spend a long time perfecting their fraudulent systems to fool people.

In a recent case one poor house buyer was scammed into paying over £640,000 to criminals. In that case emails between the buyer and their solicitor had been intercepted by a fraudster who could collect all the information about the purchase. The fraudster then used a spoofed email account impersonating the solicitors providing their own payment details. The victim was later advised by the genuine solicitor that the payments had not been requested.

Buyers of property should always be extremely suspicious if there is any change of payment details. Law firms hardly ever change their bank details. Always double check these by calling your solicitor before transferring the money because sadly, emails can be intercepted or diverted. If there is any doubt do not transfer the money.

Clients can also test the account by sending a very small sum to the account details provided and check that your lawyer has received this before transferring all the money.

It is also good advice generally to avoid posting on social media about buying/selling your house or getting a mortgage. Fraudsters may obtain this information and seek to target you. Also avoid using public or unprotected wi-fi systems to check emails when you are buying a house. Fraudsters can easily hack into these vulnerable wi-fi systems.

Once you have purchased your house, it is also possible to place an RQ restriction on your title but only if you do not live in the house as your main home. This ensures that the house cannot be disposed of without a conveyancer being satisfied that the person signing the Transfer (the document whereby ownership gets transferred to a new owner) is one and the same as the registered proprietor on the Land Registry records. This applies to buy to lets and second homes which are more vulnerable to this type of fraud. It is not foolproof, but a step towards protecting you against a fraudster pretending he is the owner of a property.

Another good idea is for houseowners to sign up to the Land Registry’s Property Alert Service. It involves the Land Registry sending you emails if your registers of title are changed. You can find details at propertyalert.landregistry.gov. uk. Again it is not a panacea but certainly worth registering with and we would highly recommend it.

Advice about how to cut energy use

WELLS-BASED environmental scientist, Angela Terry, has suggested ways of cutting energy use for householders facing a steep rise in energy bills.

Ofgem has announced details of a rise in the energy price cap that will take effect in April, with another price revision due in October.

Angela Terry, founder of climate action website One Home, said: “Prices are only going one way – upwards. The UK’s biggest energy supplier, Centrica, has said that soaring energy prices could last up to two years.

“We can’t control the cost of energy but we can control how much we use in our homes. The

most important action we can all take is to insulate. It is a ‘fit and forget’ solution that saves money, improves the value of your home and cuts carbon pollution.

“While there continues to be limited Government financial support for fitting insulation, it’s largely down to homeowners and landlords to do it themselves.

“The good news is that many of the big banks are offering zero interest loans so people can get this work done. For low income households, there are various grants and payments that are available to help people with energy efficiency measures and paying your bills.

“Go to the Simple Energy

Advice website to find out what you are eligible for. You can also ask your energy supplier if you are eligible for support through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO), which obligates medium and large energy suppliers to fund the installation of energy efficiency measures. Eligibility depends on whether you receive certain benefits.”

Angela’s top tips for ‘fit and forget’ solutions: n Insulate the loft to a depth of 30cm, which she says can save around £300 a year on energy bills in a typical British home. n Achieve a double glazing effect by fixing double-sided tape to the window frame, attach a cling

film sheet across the window and cut to size. Use a hair dryer to remove the creases. n Use heating controls to keep temperatures to 19C and lower heating levels in rooms that are not used. n Think about draught proofing.

Gaps around doors and windows can be plugged with foam or copper strips. n Get a smart meter fitted for free by the energy supplier to see how much energy is being used. n Those in rented accommodation can ask the landlord to help with these measures. If the rented home has an EPC rating of F or G, they are legally obliged to improve the standard.

Back on stage after two years AFTER a two-year period of absence – for the obvious reason – the Wookey Theatre Group (WTG) was back in February with Vicar of Dibley. The show, the 15th production by the WTG, consisted of three episodes from the last Vicar of Dibley series, cleverly sewn together as one whole performance.

Familiar characters were brilliantly brought to life by a cast that included Gil Oliphant as Frank, Paul Reynolds as Owen, Rosie Winstone as Jim, Steve French as Hugo and Steve Collinson as David. Lyn Hinde was the eponymous Geraldine, and Louise Cooper was Alice.

The director was Polly Carroll and the producer was Ann Gouldney.

Coleridge walk letter an example of Archive material THE Coleridge Archive, recently established at Wells & Mendip Museum Library, is now open to visitors and researchers. So far the Archive is only a nucleus of what it is intended to become.

At present it contains more than 30 books by or about Coleridge – mostly drawn from the Hon Librarian’s private library – together with 12 ring-folders containing articles by other Coleridge scholars and assorted written and illustrated material.

City to resume control of Barn and Rec WELLS Recreation Ground and the historic Bishop’s Barn are to be returned to the city.

Mendip District Council’s Cabinet has approved the transfer of trusteeship of the Recreation Ground charity to Wells City Council.

Changing the governance of the charity is legally complex, and the process has taken many months to complete. However, subject to Charity Commission authorisation, the move means the city council are all set to become the new “caretakers” of the Barn and Rec. Leader of Mendip District Council, Councillor Ros Wyke, said: “Talks about the possible transfer go back as far as May 2019. Finally we are confident we have ensured a sustainable future for this site, as an incomegenerating community venue.”

Mendip previously agreed to give the city up to £5,000 to cover legal costs involved in transferring the trusteeship. The Trust Fund of about £525,000 capital money is included in the transfer to improve the Bishop’s Barn.

In addition, a one-off payment of £30,000 will also be made to the Trust by Mendip, which is equivalent to six years of average income from six car parking spaces in South Street car park. After the transfer, Mendip will continue to own, operate, and maintain the

car park as part of its normal operations.

The Barn is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument of national significance.

The Rec includes public open space with a bandstand, bowling club, toilet block, children’s play area, and an informal kick-about space.

The site was given in two parts to the citizens of Wells for

community use in 1887 and 1897 by the Bishop of Bath and Wells.

Local government reorganisation in 1974 saw the newly created Mendip District Council put in charge of these assets.

Other developments include: n Good progress is being made on updating the Portway Annexe with new IT, toilets, fire and security alarms. n MESSAGE FROM THE MP

Commendable work in dealing with storm I KNOW the past couple of weeks have been difficult across Wells with the aftermath of Storm Eunice. It is extremely rare that a red weather warning is issued, and Somerset was hit very hard – in particular, the Somerset coast.

It was important that we all responded quickly and ensured everyone across the country was kept safe.

I had an urgent conversation with the Chief Executive of Somerset County Council before the Avon & Somerset Local Resilience Forum meeting with the Police Gold Commander early that week. I wanted to ensure all appropriate measures were being taken to protect our community and I want to commend the hard work of those in Somerset to get power back on, keep people safe, and communicate regularly with constituents about the situation.

I am extremely relieved that no one was hurt.

I was also able to hear from Western Power Distribution about the work they were doing to minimise disruption to homes and businesses without power because of the storm and they managed to restore power relatively quickly. I know how worrying it was for those involved and I hope those who did get in touch with my office were reassured by the response locally, in what was a very difficult situation.

As I write this, there are reports of a further storm incoming, but there is hope that this will not be as severe as previously. However, I would urge constituents to keep an eye on the Met Office updates with regards to both weather warnings and how to keep yourself safe.

I will continue to engage with local authorities, the police, and others to ensure we are as prepared as possible if more bad weather does hit us here in Somerset.

In my ministerial role, we are also prepared for any eventuality.

As a precaution military responders across the UK were prepared for Storm Eunice – and will be in the future, too. The Ministry of Defence put 800 personnel at higher readiness.

This means they could respond to any request for military support following the dangerous weather.

The UK Armed Forces are ready to support communities at home and overseas, and I am pleased we can support the country through these difficult times – especially with all the challenges the Armed Forces are facing now across Europe.

More Slinky bus services added A SOMERSET County Council bus service which supports residents who do not have access to a car or public transport has expanded its reach.

New Slinky services have been added to cover Mendip, Sedgemoor and South Somerset for residents, and a new online registration form has also been launched to get potential users signed up quickly and easily.

There is a 50 per cent fare reduction for Concessionary Bus Pass holders, and for children aged 5-16, while under-fives go free.

Eligible passengers need to register first, which can be done online, and then they can book their journey on a phone line.

Regular passenger Dione, from Westbury-sub-Mendip, who uses the Mendip West Slinky Service, said: “I couldn’t manage without it.

“It has allowed me to be independent and socialise with the outside world.”

Flapjack sales help conserve Cathedral FLAPJACK fans have helped a shop in Wells donate £685.30 to Wells Cathedral.

Flapjackery opened in Sadler Street in April last year, and since then has donated £1.50 for every ‘Wells’ box sold – a range of six chunky flapjacks – as well as 20p from everyone who opted not to take their flapjacks away in a recyclable box.

The business is owned by Sally Jenkin and Carol Myott, who said: “We wanted to support Wells Cathedral as it’s such an iconic, important and beautiful building and a huge tourist attraction too. It’s so important that these wonderful buildings stay intact for future generations to enjoy and we’re delighted to be able to make a donation.”

They added: “We’ve had a wonderful first few months in Wells. We’ve met some lovely people, many of whom have become Flapjackery regulars.

We professional carers may not know what our day will bring but we are prepared to walk in ready to support and be held accountable. Having responsibility can bring pride.

You can be proud of the responsibilities you carry.

Young farmers rally a learning experience WELLS & Glastonbury Young Farmers finished third in a special event that pitted nine clubs against each other.

Shepton Farm Vets, part of the group that includes Wells Vets, invited local Young Farmer Clubs to compete in their first ‘Veterinary Rally’.

The teams took part in a range of various practical and knowledge-based tasks, with points allocated for topics including bovine fertility, sheep obstetrics and caring for injured farm animals.

Organiser, vet Bibby Thomas, said: “Getting young farmers inspired by interactive events is a great way to encourage collaborative working between vets and the farmers of the future, helping to create a skilled workforce who can support what the vets do.

“It also showcases the training tools we’ve invested in at the practice, as part of our

In the ‘Sheep Shed’, the Young Farmers practised lamb manipulation – using ‘Breeding Betsy’, a Beltex Ewe simulator – as well as castrating and tailing cadaver lambs and examining pickled parasites.

They then took part in a session on cows feet, looking at foot lesions and treatment

protocols – including an inventive game of ‘pin the block on the hoof’.

A lesson on bovine fertility and the female reproductive anatomy followed, before the Young Farmers got hands on with a life-size training cow to practice Artificial Insemination techniques.

They also had a session focused on small animal treatment, bandaging wounds

New treasurer wanted

Glastonbury and Wells Cats Protection are looking for a new treasurer. This is a volunteer post but expenses will be paid.

The treasurer role is fairly straightforward.

It would be useful to have some basic accounts knowledge, though this is not crucial, but being computer literate is essential.

The job involves about 12 hours’ work a month. There are a small number of emails to answer, and invoices and expenses to pay via online banking. All invoices, expenditure and income have to be logged on to an online CP portal. There will also be some correspondence to acknowledge donations. Cheques need to be paid in each month, and this

IN June 2021, Mendip District Council invited applications for funding for small projects that support climate change and ecological benefits in the community.

The Climate and Ecological Emergency Fund panel met in late October 2021 and has now announced the winning projects.

They include: Westbury-sub-Mendip Parish Council n The Parish are acquiring some land on the edge of the village to establish a community wood for all residents to enjoy. The

funding will help contribute towards the cost of acquiring the land. n Funding to help to establish around 500m of a new hedgerow including tree planting, in partnership with the Westburysub-Mendip Tree Group and a local farmer, that will run alongside a permissive path.

The Bishop’s Palace and the council in 1872 argued as to whose responsibility it was to keep the path in good repair after a labouring man called Guppy, who lived in East Wells, slipped after “having purchased a few necessities for his family in Wells and on a dark and stormy night slipped, fell in to the moat and was drowned”.

Mr Tate, a city councillor, objected at a meeting of the council to paying a bill submitted

by The Bishop’s Palace for £30 for repairing the path, of which the Bishop contributed £5, as Mr Tate considered that the moat walk was the private property of the Bishop and “as such should be repaired at the expense of his Lordship. At the same meeting Dr Purnell, the city Medical Officer, expressed his surprise that the Bishop, in receipt of £5,000 per year and a house should require the poor ratepayers of Wells to repair the path in question.”

Over the years when the walk was unlit and was used as a byway from Wells to the surrounding villages and East Wells, there were several accidents, whereby the unaware, and often drunk, walkers would slip into the water.

Many drowned and there are many contemporary reports of their drownings, and there are also a number of recorded suicides and determined attempts at suicide which were not successful.

Some were also tragic accidents.

In September 1866 under the heading ‘Melancholy and Fatal Accident’, a report appeared in the Wells Journal following the death, by drowning, of a little boy.

“A sad accident which terminated fatally has happened to a little boy named Slade, the son of a widow living in Union Street. The deceased little boy who was with his sister, who was carrying an infant sibling, and friends was walking along splashing the water to amuse the

A stretch of the moat around The Bishop’s Palace infant, missed his footing and fell in exclaiming ‘Oh Emily!’.

“The sister ran for assistance but when persons came the body could not be seen. Ultimately a boat with the Bishop’s servants arrived and recovered the body which was conveyed to the police station where life was pronounced extinct.”

William Catcott, The Baker Bard of Wells (1802 to 1870), who lived and worked in Tor Street as a baker, penned a poem in homage to the little boy who lost his life.

There may, indeed be none to blame, No brows deep crimsoned o’er with shame, And none to justify the wrong: But why not put some rails along, And make it safe for boys and men, Ere tolls some drowned one’s knell again Ere other hearts with grief are wrung And every drowned one finds a tongue?

In November 1877 the Wells Journal commented: “We don’t know whether to be pleased or sad at the transformation which has been effected in the lovely walk by the moat in the erection of a boundary wall. This was certainly required for safety but it has dispelled some of the old charm. Stone walls are not picturesque things in a landscape and aesthetically this is an excrescence that will obtrude itself unpleasantly on the vision of many beholders.”

Inspirational figures, and the power of live performance JOSEPHINE Baker was the little girl from Missouri who became an original 20th-century icon. Her amazing true story as a dancer, actor, activist, campaigner and spy is coming to Croscombe in a professional play

by The Egg Theatre in Bath that will appeal to families and adults alike.

The show, Josephine, received a four-star review in The Guardian and was co-written by award-winning playwright and actor Jesse Briton, who talked to Wells Voice about his inspirations growing-up in Wells including his father Chris, a former Mayor of Wells.

“My Blue School drama teachers, Simon Moody and Pete Wild, had a massive influence on me. Possibly because they were my first real introduction to theatre, or possibly because they were two of the most intimidating, interesting and inspiring people I’d met,” he said.

“They introduced me to new forms and styles of theatre and their passion was infectious.

They made me feel that theatre was something for me. Honestly, I think I was flailing a bit and Simon and Pete helped me find a path that made sense. Whether they realised it or not, they were real life savers.

“My dad was heavily involved in the Little Theatre and his

performances were the first I ever saw. It imprinted in me a love of the immediacy of live performance and the power it could have when performed by the community for the community.

“But that’s not really it. What he gave me had nothing to do with theatre. He taught me how to lead a team. How to make yourself the stupidest person in the room. How to inspire others and create a sense of shared belief. How to do the right thing even when there was nothing in it for you.

“He taught me the power of a laugh and the courage to face the unknown. He celebrated the

ordinary and was willing to argue all day long with me. What he gave me had everything to do with theatre.”

Born in St Louis in 1906, Josephine Baker was a famous dancer and the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture.

She became a French national, aiding the French Resistance during the Second World War, and spoke at the renowned March on Washington in 1963 alongside Martin Luther King.

New concert series starting at St Thomas’ Church TRIO Paradis – Jacquelyn Bevan (piano), Lisa Betteridge (violin) and Linda Stocks (cello) – formed in 2009 and perform classical and palm court concerts. Folk festival back with diverse line-up after two-year break AFTER a two-year break due to the pandemic, Priddy Folk Festival will return this summer running from Friday, July 8, through to Sunday, July 10.

The festival is centred around a programme of ticketed events with more than 20 bands and solo artists from diverse folk traditions appearing on stages dotted around Priddy Green at Priddy, near Wells.

As well as the main programme, there are many free events including the dance and children’s festivals, the Fringe, workshops and guided walks.

The festival, which is a notfor-profit event, first started in 1991 as a primary school fundraiser in the village hall.

Over the years, the festival has grown but remains true to its roots in raising money for many local organisations.

Since 2012, it has worked in collaboration with the Blue School and Halsway Manor (the National Centre for the Folk Arts) focusing on young musicians in the folk tradition.

At every one of the fairs there is the opportunity to buy interesting and unusual plants from nurseries, all of whom are genuine growers dedicated to offering well-grown plants and advice on the plants they sell.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS FLORAL ART CLUB ON Tuesday, February 8, club members met to welcome Angie Blackwell. Angie is a Chelseawinning floral designer from Ilminster. Her demonstration was entitled Spring is Bursting Out all Over.

She began with an arrangement of cream and red parrot tulips which not only represented spring but gave a nod to Valentine’s Day as well.

This was followed by an unusual pot au fleur, a representation of a spring garden using a mixture of bulbs, plants and cut flowers.

The next design was a striking upright arrangement in red and green. Angie completed her demonstration by doing two hand-tied bouquets, one traditional and the other with a modern twist.

Throughout the demonstration Angie kept everyone amused with tales of how she, her animals and business survived lockdown and the new venture she will be starting in April.

Pat Squire gave the vote of thanks and Pat Ardron and Ann Brown served the teas.

Our March demonstration will be on Tuesday, March 8.

By contrast we look forward to welcoming one of the South West’s newest area demonstrators, Jenny York.

Jenny Jones WELLS CIVIC SOCIETY A DOG is not just for Christmas.

Nor is a cow. But whoever heard of anyone receiving a cow as a present? The answer is: thousands of impoverished people in Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and Zambia.

This the audience at the February meeting of the Wells Civic Society learnt as they listened to and viewed the presentation by Jackie Laws, ambassador for the charity,

But they also learnt one or two other important points.

Send A Cow has, indeed, sent many cows, in calf, to selected families in these countries since the charity had its inception in 1988. That was when a small group of British dairy farmers, struck by the anomaly at the time of their being compelled to slaughter healthy animals and pour milk down the drain and Ugandans who were struggling to survive in a country so recently enmeshed in turmoil, took it upon themselves to send some of their now sadly unwanted cows to desperately needy rural families. But things have developed dramatically as time has gone on and Send A Cow actually no longer sends cows.

This is not at all to say that cows are no longer important: indeed they are, but now it is possible to buy them locally on behalf of the small-scale farmers.

The other new perception the audience had to grasp was that Send A Cow now does so very much more than just help struggling families own a cow, with its nutritious milk, and valuable manure to aid their crop growth, and a calf which they may be able to rear and sell to a neighbour. Its other initiatives, always working with families and communities who are victims of drought or floods, heat, deforestation or climate change, are summarised under three headings, which are now the legs on which their work and organisation stands.

the family and up- skilling them, thus enhancing a family’s capacity to work productively, and improving hygiene understanding and the importance of clean water to boost health standards dramatically. Farm Systems is the next pillar and smallscale, sustainable and organic methods are shown, the value of mulching, composting, saving water and watering demonstrated, and the significance of kitchen gardening to a family’s health and wellbeing is proved over a period.

Once a family is eating more nutritiously and enjoying better health, the third leg of the strategy comes into play, which is Enterprise. Families are helped to become financially literate so that they may sell their surplus, develop local markets or, indeed, start a small business. Crucially, if they can earn enough, families can send their children to school, which is a beacon for a generational shift towards a better future.

The general public can help Send A Cow in this vital work by giving donations, by buying from their gift catalogue, by leaving a legacy, or indeed, by booking Jackie as a speaker at an event on jackie.laws@odf.org.uk Should they do the latter, they will find that in Jackie they have a person of great experience, including first-hand, who is full of information and who gives a clear exposition of all that Send A Cow does and stands for.

Tackling digital exclusion proved most popular with seven votes, closely followed by reviewing sentencing of women offenders with six. There were three votes each for girls’ clothing to be fit for purpose; recognition of ASD/ ADHD in girls and women, and equality in employment law for the menopause. We now wait to see which come out top nationally.

In other business, we are beginning to consider how to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this summer; some members are shortly heading to Ashcott for an Edwardian tea and talk; some have created an artwork from old spectacles decorated with slogans inspired by the current campaign to raise awareness of the early signs of ovarian cancer; and a discussion with a Bath organisation working with domestic violence seems to offer the promise of future partnership.

Our speakers this month were Rosie and Harriet from Mulberry, who came to tell us about the company’s sustainability strategy. We learned that fast fashion is the second worst polluter on the planet, notorious for creating disposable items that end up in landfill. Producers do a lot of “greenwashing”, misleading consumers with empty claims about eco-friendly products.

Leather is a by-product of the beef industry but British leather is most suited to making rugged items like saddles, so Mulberry buys leather from tanneries in Italy and Germany, and other items from China, Vietnam and Turkey.

The company decided to review their supply chain and measure the impact. Suppliers were audited against ethical criteria including workers’ conditions; animal welfare; traceability; carbon emissions and use of water, chemicals and energy. Suppliers are now graded and ranked, and supported to make further improvements.

Mulberry is looking at the demand for vegan leather, investigating alternatives made from plant material.

Members enjoyed being consulted during the talk, using an app on their phones to share opinions on some issues. We ended with the long-awaited raffle for the top of the range handbag, which saw Sandra emerge victorious and two runners up getting consolation prizes of a purse and a keyring.

Best of all, ticket sales raised £530 for Somerset Community Foundation which supports lots of worthy local causes.

A rare downside of being such a popular and thriving WI group is not having been able to accommodate all the women that are on our growing waiting list.

So it is wonderful to report that a second group is to be set up in Wells. More information will soon be available from Somerset County WI, and no doubt on local social media. We look forward to forging productive links, sharing friendship and information, and teaming up on occasion for events like skittles.

It’s great that women in Wells make their Women’s Institutes the focus of their socialising and pursuing their many and varied interests.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS MEN’S BREAKFAST WELLS Men’s Breakfast meets on the first Saturday of every month except August. We welcome men of all ages to a good English breakfast and a talk by a guest speaker.

Meetings are at the Connect Centre, start at 8am and end at about 9.30am. There is no formal membership – just book in by answering the monthly email, or by telephone. The cost is £10.

Charles is an international conductor, music director of film and theatre, composer and a curator of music on British radio and television. In 2011 he co-founded the Paraorchestra, the world’s first fully integrated ensemble of professional musicians with and without disabilities. An uplifting way to start the weekend.

Pat Dyer HENTON AND DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB HENTON and District Gardening Club will meet next on Wednesday, March 16, at 7.30pm in Henton Village Hall.

The sap is rising and gardeners are looking at plants which have survived the winter and will make good stock plants for this year’s displays. Local plantswoman Sally Gregson is going to show us how to take and propagate cuttings of favourites in this March meeting. New members and visitors are most welcome to this friendly club.

WELLS & DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB BUSINESS is business as they say, and it was very pleasant to see Wells & District Gardening Club back once again in the Town Hall. It was not quite business as usual but careful management allowed a very enjoyable evening with many welcome new faces as well as patient members anxious to get on with things; to say nothing of the opportunity to get out and meet people.

A short general meeting unanimously approved a rise in the subscription for the first time for a decade or more, and to proceed with plans for garden visits later on in the year. This was followed by a gentle quiz with questions ranging from Isaac Newton’s apple and George Washington’s horse to the colour of elderberries and the speed of garden insects in flight.

Something for everyone in fact where haphazard guesswork had as good a chance for success as encyclopaedic horticultural knowledge.

Thursday, March 10, at 7.30pm.

Our guest speaker will be Mary Payne MBE who will be giving a talk on the Gardens of Compton Acres in Poole, Dorset. Mary is a very well-known lecturer, writer and garden designer with gold awards at RHS Chelsea and Hampton Court. She was instrumental in introducing to many Somerset gardens the ideas of Piet Oudolf with his mixed plantings of blending perennials and grasses. Lady Farm at Chelwood is an early example and for many years Mary has been Garden Consultant at Compton Acres.

It promises to be a worthwhile evening as she never fails to be both entertaining and informative. Everyone is welcome and there will be a chance to join the membership or just come as a visitor.

Until then, we must get on with our careful clearing and optimistic sowings. But remember the old saying: Four seeds you have to grow One for the pheasant and one for the crow, One to rot and one to grow.

Club has remained strong and focused RUGBY Denis Verrier, Chairman of the Minis and Junior section of Wells Rugby Club, describes how the club is thriving again after a difficult couple of years THE last two years have been unprecedented and have meant having to get used to life through Covid. Coming out the other side has been difficult for everyone; it has changed the way people live their lives, interact with each other and has impacted all aspects of life including sport.

Wells Rugby Club is no different.

The club consists of more than 200 members, with senior men’s teams playing in the Tribute Somerset Premier of South West Division, as well as a thriving girls rugby section and the long-standing and wellestablished Juniors and Minis section, covering every age group from U6 up to Colts.

Over the past two seasons the senior teams’ league results have been heavily disrupted and although every attempt was made early on to adapt in order to keep everyone safe, the Rugby Football Union, following guidance from the government, soon decided to put a stop to all rugby activities. This was unheard of and a huge shock for a community club like ours.

This could have been disastrous to ‘grassroots’ rugby clubs who rely on match food and drinks takings, membership

Wells U12s have been a particular success story this season fees, sponsorship and funds raised through clubhouses and events to exist. The club took some very pragmatic, and sometimes difficult decisions to ensure that it would survive throughout these difficult times.

These also presented some opportunities, and thanks to our volunteers and benefactors, we were able to refresh the look and feel of our clubhouse on Charter Way ready for the return to rugby, alongside the addition of our new ‘Shack’, serving our community with hot and cold refreshments and food on training and match days.

Then the day finally arrived, and the return to rugby was finally here. Training started again as well as friendly matches.

Even though it was different in many ways in the early days, it was a great feeling to see our club and its community of members,

players, parents, supporters and sponsors come together again.

Numbers of players across all age groups continued to increase, including our standalone girls’ teams, all brilliantly supported by our incredibly loyal sponsors and volunteers. Despite the long ‘lay-off’, players and coaches were eager to return to some normality. For our youngers players, we continued with our approach of focusing on our ethos of ‘learn rugby, enjoy rugby, play rugby’. It is so important to us to ensure that the children enjoy themselves first and foremost, forming new friendships and acquiring key life skills through rugby’s core values of ‘Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, Sporstmanship’.

Despite all the difficulties, the club has remained strong and focused. John Owen, our

new chairman, is continuing to work on our long-term planned move to our Haybrdge site, on the outskirts of Wells, which will represent a huge step for Wells Rugby Club, allowing us to grow even further and providing ever more opportunities for young and not so young people to come and enjoy this most wonderful of sports.

This season has been incredible already, with our Minis and Juniors section continuing to grow and showing excellent form, with our U12s team still unbeaten and our girls’ teams thriving under the leadership of Allie. We also became part of Bath Rugby Affiliate club programme, a ground-breaking initiative launched by Bath Rugby aimed at supporting clubs local to them and developing.

Despite all the success, we also always need volunteers to help the club and are also looking for coaches in our minis section to help develop and grow further for the benefit of our young players, so please do get in touch with us to get involved.

The next few months will be busy as always, with increased presence in the community, as well as taking part in the Queen’s jubilee celebrations.

The future is looking incredibly exciting, with our 150th anniversary only a few years away, and we are delighted to be able to be a part of that future at the heart of your community.

Events keenly contested as course holds up well despite conditions GOLF MENDIP Golf Club’s course, despite the continuing wet conditions, is holding up very well and the tee times are well filled every day.

Ninety-two men competed in the Pro Shop Bowmaker event which saw a couple of mixed teams at the top of the leaderboard. In second place came Tony Logan/Keith Gadsden/Suzy Rudkin/Jinhee Page with 85 points leaving the winners as Louise and Tony Scott partnered by Alan and Pauline Williams with 86 points

The Seniors Captain Alan Edwards was finally able to report the results of the Seniors Captain/Vice Captain series of challenges. Seventeen pairs were played against with the winners announced as David Jukes and Tony Scott who finished the 18hole challenge 3 up.

Alan also advised that 37 Seniors Friendly matches had taken place and despite Covid restrictions early in the year only four matches were lost from the original fixture list.

75 different Seniors took part in the matches. In addition the Seniors played 10 Avalon League matches.

The first Seniors event of 2022 took place with 100 players in a four-person Team Texas Scramble.

Winning with an amazing Gross 67, net 49 were Alan Snow, Richard Baillon, Justin May and Alan Kay. An excellent turnout of 24 couples took part in the January Mixed Social Golf event.

Winning with 44 points were Tony Logan and Suzy Rudkin with the husband and wife team

of Tony and Louise Scott just a shot behind.

The Greens Team have been very busy with their chainsaws continuing their taking down of several pine trees. None of the trees removed are natural to the Mendips and the main purpose is to open up the light to certain tees and greens which is bound to have a beneficial effect on those key areas of the course.

Over the next few weeks Members will see some extensive tree planting on the two new holes which are still scheduled, weather permitting, to open for play during April.

Mentors wanted to help young people AN organisation that supports vulnerable children and young people across Somerset is seeking more volunteers in the Mendip area.

PROMISEworks volunteers help a young person to build the resilience needed to move forward and achieve their full potential – this could be staying in school, keeping out of trouble or getting to university.

John Chambers, pictured right, PROMISEworks caseholder for Mendip, said: “There are 21 young people aged between seven and 25 already receiving long-term mentoring from our local volunteers, but I have still 46 awaiting help, and every week I receive more referrals.

Each youngster has a different reason to be on the waiting list but all have one thing in common, they are asking for our support.

“The young people have a range of different interests; for one it is baking, playing games and puzzles, for another it’s Manga and K pop, and for a third ICT and science. They are each looking for a supportive adult in their life whom they can trust and spend time with to improve their wellbeing.”

Scheme to encourage try-out at snowsports HOUSEBUILDER Redrow South West has launched a scheme to support youngsters keen to try out snowsports at the Mendip Snowsport Centre at Churchill.

It has celebrated its partnership with GB Snowsport by creating a £10,000 Winter Sports Fund to encourage local children, and youngsters’ groups and clubs, to take to their local snowdome or dry ski slope and try skiing or snowboarding for the first time.

The initiative was launched on the eve of the Winter Olympics and is open for applications from children aged 4-16, with groups, including Brownies and Scouts, also encouraged to enter.
