Memories of man who ‘had the city at heart’ THE family of one of the best known figures in the Wells area, Jack Paul, have paid tribute to him after his death at the age of 97.

A former captain of Wells City football and cricket teams, and president of the chamber of commerce, he was apprenticed to the family firm of W&H Paul at the age of 14.

He spent the rest of his working life with the renowned firm of builders and decorators, apart from his time in the Army during the Second World War, when he rose to the rank of Sergeant Major.

“He was so intertwined with the history of the city,” said Hazel Switzer, one of his two daughters. “He was a Wellensian above all.”

There was a large gathering for Jack’s funeral at Coxley Church on May 20, followed by his burial in the churchyard.

He had lived in Coxley for 71 years, moving to a cottage there Continued on page 3

Well known figure at centre of city life From page 1 with his wife Meg in 1948, two years after they met at a Wells Town Hall ladies’ choice dance.

Having learned the trades of W&H Paul, he went on to manage the business – based for most of its existence at 2 St Cuthbert Street – with his brother George and sister Madeline until the firm stopped trading in 1990.

Among the projects it took on was renovating the Wells Cathedral Clock quarter-jacks, redecorating the St Cuthbert’s Church coat of arms, and other work for a prestigious list of clients including the Swan Hotel, the White Hart, Wells Museum, Mendip Hospital and the Ancient Gatehouse Hotel.

He put his building knowledge to good use renovating his own cottage, and making garden sheds.

“The house is the house that Jack built,” said Hazel. She added: “He loved people, he loved talking, he loved jokes – usually quite bad ones.”

His other daughter, Elizabeth Anderton, said: “He built himself 14 sheds, with help from family members – he could never sit still. He straightened nails and screws to reuse. He had pots of them. He was a recycler before it used to happen.”

A keen sportsman, Jack played football for Wells at a time when visiting supporters would sometimes arrive with homing pigeons to relay the

at the age of 75 to help at his grandchildren’s swimming club.

He also loved carnival, helping to make, and appearing on, the W&H Paul cart, and in later years he enjoyed the veterans’ breakfasts that he used to attend, and twice-weekly

cribbage games with neighbours.

Researching local history became another hobby, and he wrote two memoirs on the history of W&H Paul.

His nephew Jim Paul, who runs the db+Paul chartered surveyors firm from what were once W&H Paul offices, across the road from their main premises in St Cuthbert Street, said that with Jack’s death “it’s the end of a generation of families that had firms in Wells”.

“He had the city at heart,” he added. “He had very strong opinions about what happened in Wells.”

For several years, the family had been holding a party on Jack’s birthday in June, which sometimes had more than 100 guests, and they had already begun planning this year’s event.

“His grandmother and his aunt both lived to 100,” said Elizabeth. “We thought he was going to make it to 100.”

New cafe/bar set to open doors THE new Fosso Lounge cafe, restaurant and bar in Wells High Street will open its doors on Wednesday, June 12.

Loungers say they have spent £800,000 transforming what was previously The Original Factory Shop “into a familyfriendly retro-inspired cosy retreat, where eclectic artwork and quirky curios sit next to oversized vintage sofas and old school benches, strikingly painted table tops and statement lighting”.

The menu will range from tapas and burgers to paninis and mac and cheese; there will be games, books, colouring pencils

and pads for children; a notice board for publicising events, and a book swap area. Stef Adams, operations manager, Loungers, said: “We can’t wait to get in and get going at Fosso Lounge and become involved in the community who we hope will love lounging as much as we do.”

The Wells team is partnering with sister site Fondo Lounge in Street to support mental health charity Second Step by donating 50p from every burger and 10p from every coffee sold during the first month of trading to the charity.

The new venture has created 30 jobs, say the company.

THE Post Office has revealed that there are two retailers in Wells interested in taking on post office services when the Market Place branch closes in September.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We understand how important a post office is to a community. The current postmaster has resigned and the premises, which we do not own, will be withdrawn for post office use in September. We are committed to providing post

office services in Wells and we are working hard to maintain service.

“We are delighted to announce that we have two interested retailers. We are looking at the possibility of two post offices in and around Wells.”

The news comes in the wake of a warning by the National Federation of SubPostmasters that the UK’s post office network is close to collapse with thousands of branches at risk of closure over the next 12 months.

Charity walkers raise over £2,000 FIVE women from the Wells area who took part in this year’s Moonwalk have raised more than £2,000 for breast cancer charities.

Angela Rivers, Jenny Barnes, Zoe Guise, Teresa Wyatt and Bernie Thorogood walked 26.2 miles in their bras/fancy dress throughout the night, starting

and finishing at Clapham Common, London. They set off at 10.40pm and finished about nine hours later.

The money raised in sponsorship included a bag pack in Morrisons, coffee mornings/ cake sales and private donations.

They would like to thank everyone for their kind support.

Among the tools, equipment and collectables from Wells building firm GC Allen were six local pub signs, including signs for The Globe Inn and The Fountain Inn, that sold for more than £100 each, and the court witness box from Wells Town Hall that sold for £105.

A MUSICAL Evening is being held at St Cuthbert’s Church on Friday, June 21, featuring Wells City Band, St Cuthbert’s Church Choir and St Cuthbert’s Junior School Choir.

‘For Sale’ sign goes up at Old Deanery THE Old Deanery has gone up for sale with an asking price of £2.5 million.

A ‘For Sale’ sign appeared outside the historic Grade I listed building on Cathedral Green in the third week of May. Prospective buyers have until September 12 to submit their bids – and local estate agents Lodestone Property, who are marketing it, say that there has already been interest.

“We’ve already had approaches,” said managing partner Cathy Morris-Adams.

“It is one of the most prestigious buildings in the city, if not Somerset.”

Originally built as the home of the Dean of Wells 800 years ago, The Old Deanery is currently used as diocesan office accommodation for the Diocese of Bath and Wells, where more than 50 staff work. They will be moving to Flourish House at Cathedral Park once Aster Communities move out, expected to be in early 2020.

Lodestone say that potential new uses for The Old Deanery include residential, commercial, care and hotel/leisure, subject to planning and the necessary consents.

There has been speculation about it becoming an art gallery, or a mixed-use gallery, cafe and residential development.

Tenders will be considered for their suitability by the Bishop’s Council.

“This is a unique opportunity to breathe new energy into an under-utilised building whilst continuing to celebrate its architecture, elegance, durability and status within the city of Wells,” said Cathy.

“Subject to planning, the building has tremendous potential and is suitable for

Petition prompted by fears for child safety MORE than 400 people have signed a petition demanding action to make North Road safer because of fears that children’s lives are being put at risk.

The petition was started by parents of pupils at Stoberry Park School, who say problems for pedestrians caused by cars parked on both sides of the road and on blind bends make it dangerous to get to the school.

They aim to present it to a meeting of Highways authority Somerset County Council with a plea for urgent action.

Parent Sue Ali hosted a meeting in her home to discuss the situation with other parents, councillors and PC Darren Pearson. “This is not about a battering on the school. It’s about the safety of the kids,” she said.

She said that her daughter was nearly knocked over recently in North Road – and she has already lost a brother who was knocked over and killed outside

PC Pearson pointed out that there had only been one reported accident in 12 months in the whole of North Road.

The petition calls on the county council “to implement immediate highways / traffic works to improve pedestrian safety and the flow of traffic along North Road”, and adds: “we require that action is taken immediately as this is an urgent matter”.

Stoberry Park School headteacher Michael Hawkins said that the school has had many meetings with interested parties about the issue, and would like to find a solution.

“It is dangerous, it is horrible,” he said. “We absolutely appreciate what people are saying about the children’s

safety. We’re absolutely behind them. I do feel for the parents who do it day after day.”

He said that the school car park is open until 8.15am for Sparks breakfast club pupils to be dropped off, and reopens at about 4.15pm for pupils who attend after-school clubs to be picked up. But because of the narrow entrance and exit, opening it at peak times means traffic queues build up in North Road, making things worse.

He said that turning some of the school grounds into a drop-off zone, as has been suggested, would cost hundreds of thousands of pounds – hard to justify when school budgets are under such pressure and the hall roof, for example, needs money spent on repairs.

He believes that a walking bus, where pupils are dropped off in places such as College Road or near St Thomas’ Church and walked to school in a group by adults, might be the best solution, but says his pleas for volunteer helpers have met with little response.

A spokesman for Somerset County Council said: “We’re aware of the concerns of some residents and parents of Stoberry Park School. A number of visits have been made ahead of the Wells city-wide review to enable officers to observe the situation prior to the school holidays.

Their findings will be discussed at the initial Wells parking review meeting during June.”

Peter starts out on STOCK CLEARANCE road to raising £1m SPECIAL OFFER for cancer charity CLASSIC car owner Peter Butler, of Wells, is on an ambitious fundraising drive.

Having overcome bowel cancer, he now wants to help raise £1 million for Macmillan Cancer Support.

He was promoting the cause at the 25th anniversary Mendip Vintage and Classic Tour that attracted thousands of people to Wells Cathedral Green on May 12.

Macmillan Cancer Support was once again the event’s nominated charity, and it is a cause close to Peter’s heart.

“Believe you me, I am going to raise £1 million, along with Macmillan and CLIC and the Beacon Centre,” he said.

“I’m enthusiastic about it and it’s all about using that enthusiasm. We can make a big difference.

“But as much as money,

raising awareness of cancer is as important.

“Get yourself checked, don’t smoke. It’s so frightening when you lose friends to cancer. You can do something about it.”

More than 150 cars parked up in front of the Cathedral for the crowds to admire at the end of the tour, on a beautifully sunny afternoon.

Making their debut among them were Peter’s restored classic car and vintage caravan known as Milly and Tilly – a 1958 Hillman Minx Convertible (Milly) and 1959 Vintage Caravan (Tilly).

“When I was lying in my hospital bed and they were restoring me, I thought perhaps I should restore something for them in return,” he said.

He hopes that his restoration project will inspire other people to take up their own challenges

n NEWS Siblings part of Crown’s history SIDNEY and Barbara Price, who have both died within weeks of each other, were two of the four children of Tom Price and May Price who ran the Crown Hotel in Wells.

They along with Sidney’s twin brother Cyril and their older sister Audrey were all born at the Crown Hotel.

Sidney was born in 1922 and Barbara in 1928. They had a happy childhood at the Crown Hotel and as their father Tom was one of the founder members of the Wells Carnival they remembered being some of the youngest participants of the carnival procession.

During the war Barbara and Audrey joined the Red Cross in Wells and they both helped in the Crown Hotel but were kept under the beady eye of father Tom when the soldiers were around.

Sidney served with the Royal Army Medical Corps during the war, and when he was demobbed in 1946 he helped his father in the Crown for a while where his Tom told him off for charging pre-war prices.

In 1954 Sidney and Barbara became licensees of the New Inn in St Thomas Street for 30 years before they retired together to a bungalow built by their father in North Road.

Cyril died two years ago and Audrey is in a local care home.

For the last eight months of their life Sidney and Barbara were residents at Torrwood Care Home in South Horrington.

Barbara died on March 22 and Sidney followed her six weeks later on April 28.

First beer festival goes down well MORE than 400 people sampled the drinks from six local brewers at the first Wells Beer & Cider Festival.

Visitors were also treated to a number of musical acts and an array of food options, as well as a bouncy castle and laser tag at the family-friendly day session.

Enosis Events said that they are planning to return with a bigger and better event in 2020 with more brewers and more entertainment.

Demands on carers being highlighted THE mental and physical strain placed on unpaid carers is being highlighted with the approach of Carers Week, from June 10-16.

In Mendip, according to the 2011 Census, one in ten people provide unpaid care to a friend or relative.

“The numbers are an underestimate because many people don’t recognise themselves as carers,” said Claire Chettoe, who helps support carers in Wells.

“The daughter who looks after her elderly, frail parents sees it as her duty to do so.

A husband caring for his wife with dementia does it because they married for better or for worse.

“Carers have to put their own needs to one side and they are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Carers are often isolated and don’t have time to access information and the support they are entitled to or that could help them or the person they care for.”

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, substance misuse issue, or who

needs extra help as they grow older. There are 6.5 million people in the UK who are carers.

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities. It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

“We mustn’t take the enormous contribution made by unpaid carers for granted,” said Claire.

“Without them our health and care services would collapse. Yet the physical and mental strain of caring, without enough support, is jeopardising carers’ ability to care in the future.

“Caring for a loved one too often means carers neglect their own mental and physical health; finding the time and space to be healthy, get enough sleep and maintain relationships with others are all huge challenges identified by carers. Battling with a complex health, benefits and care system are putting more stress on to carers.”

‘The Lawrence Centre’s a lifeline’ MAUREEN and Brian Matthews have been married for 36 years but Brian now has Alzheimers and vascular dementia, and Maureen has had to take on the role of carer.

“We’ve got to the stage where he needs quite a bit of caring. He’s gradually needing more done for him. It’s 24/7,” said Maureen, who added that doing the thinking and planning

for two people can be quite a mental strain.

Brian attends The Lawrence Centre, which provides day opportunities for older people including those living with memory loss and health issues, four times a week. Maureen said: “The Lawrence Centre is my lifeline. I know Brian’s happy here and it means I can do the jobs I can’t do otherwise.”

n NEWS Museum seeks new recruits WELLS & Mendip Museum on Cathedral Green is looking for volunteers to join its front of house team.

The museum depends almost entirely on volunteer help to keep it open and serving as the repository and venue for a fascinating and unique collection of items which give an insight into the history of Wells and the district of Mendip.

Without this dedicated, friendly collection of people the museum would struggle to exist.

Public engagement a priority COUNCILLOR John Osman was elected as the 646th Mayor of Wells at the first meeting of the new-look city council.

Previously the deputy mayor, he succeeds Councillor Celia Wride. He said to a packed council chamber: “Thank you for bestowing this great honour on me. I’ve been a lifelong Wells resident and this does mean the world to me.”

Councillor Osman said that he hoped to hold public debates about topical issues, and planned to hold monthly coffee mornings in the Mayor’s Parlour on Saturday mornings “to really open up the position of mayor to residents”. He also said that his charity for the year will be the Forget Me Not Suite at Bath RUH: “It cared for Holly [his wife] and I at probably our darkest hour with the passing of our children Lottie and Logan.”

Councillor Osman and Councillor Wride were the only two Conservatives to be elected to the council in the local elections on May 2.

Among those who lost out were Conservatives John North, Harvey Siggs, Richard Greenwell and David Swain, who were all standing for re-election.

When members of the public present were invited to address the meeting, Ian Robins said he wanted to see more openness and transparency from the council. The minutes of meetings do not provide enough information for people who were not there, he said.

Councillor Robbins said: “I think we should watch what is happening at County Hall. We should be ready if we need to be.

I think we are ready.”

In May’s Mendip District Council elections, Councillor Osman failed to gain re-election, as did Leader of the council Harvey Siggs, and John North.

The victors in the three Wells wards were all Liberal Democrats: Rob Ayres and Laura Waters in Wells St Cuthbert’s, Caroline McKinnell and Tom Ronan in Wells St Thomas’, and Lois Rogers in Wells Central.

The new political make-up of Mendip District Council is: Liberal Democrat 22, Conservative 10, Green 10, Independent 3, Other 2.

Prizes given out after children crack puzzle of hidden eggs FROM March 31 to April 26, 43 knitted Easter eggs were hidden in 43 shops in Wells in a challenge set by Wells Rotary Club.

Children and their families searched for the eggs, writing down the letter attached to each egg on the leaflet provided.

When all the letters were found, they “unscrambled” to make a sentence about the Rotary club that said: Wells Rotary Club thinks globally and acts locally More than 1,500 leaflets were distributed through Wells & Mendip Museum and local schools, and at afternoon tea on Saturday, April 27, the prize draw was made.

Shopkeepers joined in the fun, hiding eggs in obscure places.

AN art exhibition at A2 Gallery in June will feature work by 10 Somerset artists including returning artist Martin Bentham RWA. ‘Pud’s’ memory lives on in charity match THIS year’s charity rugby match in memory of Wells RFC player James ‘Pud’ Pullen raised more than £1,000 for brain tumour research.

The James Pullen Memorial match has been staged ever since James died of a brain tumour in 2015. It sees a Wells team made up of a mixture of Wells players and James’ friends take on Butleigh.

There were two firsts at this year’s event – it was the first time it had been held on a Saturday rather than a Friday night, and it was the first time that Butleigh have won the game.

“It was a great day,” said organiser Tommy Corns, who plays for Wells 2nds and was a close friend of James.

“We raised £1,003.10 on the day for brain tumour research which was great – in total we have now raised in excess of £10,000 for brain tumour

There was a really good turnout, it was three deep all along the clubhouse to watch a brilliantly contested match. This was the first year that Butleigh had won the match after a draw and two losses, they made a brilliant second half comeback to clinch the match 31-22.

“As the years go on it becomes less about raising money and

more about keeping the memory of Pud living on. Pud loved his mates and would have loved the idea of his best pals from fishing, rugby, partying and plastering coming together and sharing a few jars and telling tales of his life – which they did until the early hours. Roll on year five.”

And, he added, quoting Terry Pratchett: “No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away.”

Delight at art competition entries THE countdown is on for the opening of the Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) exhibition at Wells Cathedral, running from July 20 until August 11.

There has been 1,800 entries of work from around the world and it is now up to the panel of distinguished artists to draw up the shortlist for the exhibition.

There are also 10 installation sites throughout the Cathedral.

WAC has received 64 installation entries for eight of these; the other two sites are dedicated for artwork from Heads Up and

for WAC’s president, Professor Anita Taylor.

Paddy O’Hagan, chair of WAC, said: “We are absolutely thrilled by the number, and quality, of entries this year. The reputation of WAC is growing, and we are proud to say it is now considered one of the UK’s major contemporary art competitions – all stemming from our rural city.” n There are still some slots available for volunteer stewards.

Moat Boat Races to go ahead, say Lions THE annual Wells Moat Boat Races, one of the highlights of the city’s summer season, will be going ahead, Wells Lions and Wells Air Cadets have confirmed.

Pending approval from Mendip District Council on safety matters, the event will be held on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26.

Rumours have been rife in Wells that the event would be cancelled, following the collapse of this year’s May Day maypole dancing, also organised by Wells Lions Club.

The Lions cancelled their annual May Day festivities last month because of what they said were the demands placed upon them by Mendip District Council.

However, the voluntary group is now working closely with the council to ensure the Moat Boat Races proceed as planned.

The water spectacle will take place on the Bishop’s Palace Moat, with land-based stalls

This year’s Wells Moat Races will take place on August 26 and attractions in the adjoining Bandstand Park. Rides and slides for the children and food and craft stalls for the adults will ensure a full day’s fun for all.

The organisers are making a plea for volunteers on the day, to ensure it passes safely and successfully.

“We stage this event in partnership with Wells Air Cadets and we will need help with setting up the event and marshalling it through the day,” said Lions president Paul Clegg.

“We are a small group of volunteers, always looking for new members. With the stricter safety regulations required and enforced by Mendip District Council, we will need all the help we can get.”

A Mendip District Council spokesperson said: “We have been talking to the event organisers of the Wells Boat Race to help offer guidance, to enable them to complete the paperwork required.

“The changes in health and safety at work legislation does mean there is an increased responsibility for both event organisers and owners of land and buildings where events take place.

“We understand that there have been some frustrations about event planning in Wells, but we are really supportive of

the idea of members of Wells Rotary Club, looking to establish a forum for event organisers in the city to share knowledge and support on events taking place in Wells.”

Wells Lions are seeking sponsors from local businesses and individuals to cover the costs of the Moat Boat Races and ensure a healthy profit for local charities and good causes. The races have been held annually since 2000 and have generated approaching £200,000 for local causes.

The principal sponsor this year will be The Swan Hotel, Wells. Other main sponsors include Butcombe Brewery, Tincknells Country Stores and Bluebird Care.

Country garden festival set to take over Palace grounds THE Bishop’s Palace Country Garden Festival celebrates its fifth year this summer and will once again take over the grounds of The Bishop’s Palace from June 14-16.

The festival will fill the gardens with a range of stalls, including nurseries with rare and specialist plants, food and drink, garden gadgets and tools, sculpture, outdoor seating and paints, and many more, all designed to inspire people to love and use their garden.

Some of the stalls will be hosting hands-on demonstrations to help visitors learn new skills and improve their gardening knowledge.

There will be a range of garden-themed talks from speakers such as Chris Beardshaw, award-winning British garden designer, plantsman, author, speaker and broadcaster for shows such as Gardeners Question Time and Gardeners’ World; Anne Swithinbank, one of Britain’s best known gardening presenters, a member of the Gardeners’ Question Time panel for Radio Four and writer of many books, the most recent being The Greenhouse Gardener; and Tamsin Westhorpe, experienced horticultural journalist, gardener, RHS Chelsea Flower Show judge and co-chair of The Garden Media Guild.

Rare access to almshouse areas THE residents and Trustees of the City of Wells Almshouses will once again be opening their award-winning Llewellyn and Bubwith gardens on Saturday, June, 22, from 11am to 4pm.

Refreshments will be served – donations gratefully accepted – in the Bubwith walled garden with a variety of home-made fare.

Everyone is welcome to go along and look at these historic dwellings and to walk around the gardens, none of which are usually open to the public. Entry is free.

Live music will be performed on the South Lawn and in the Chapel throughout the festival, with a variety of acts from around the South West to entertain visitors.

Tickets, which are being sold in aid of The Palace Trust and its conservation work, are £9 adult, £4 child (under 5s free), £7 groups of 10+, and can be purchased online, by telephone, or from the Visitor Centre.

Garden gates being opened ON the afternoon of Saturday, June 22 – when the summer flowers should be in their prime – some gardens on the eastern side of Wells will be open for public viewing.

Situated in St Thomas Street and Bath Road, these gardens belong to members of Wells Gardening Club and will reflect the enthusiasms and individualities of their owners.

“We all enjoy our gardens and it is a chance to share that pleasure with others,” said club chairman Pip Harwood.

Gardens will be open from 2pm to 5pm. There will be plants for sale as well as teas and cakes.

Star names on way as tickets sale starts TICKETS are now on sale for the 2019 Wells Theatre Festival which boasts an expanded programme for its second year, 17 productions being performed over the weekend of July 11-14.

And this year, the festival welcomes two of this country’s most accomplished actresses, Imogen Stubbs (True Colors, Sense and Sensibility) and Susannah Harker (Mattie in the original, UK version of A House of Cards and Jane Bennett TV adaptation of Pride and Prejudice also starring Colin Firth).

Imogen will be performing a rehearsed reading of David Hare’s Amy’s View alongside her daughter, Ellie Nunn.

Call for acts to wow talent show judges

WELL known pom pom dancer and fundraiser Tina Blackwill is organising a charity talent show open to any family-friendly acts.

Wells’s Got Talent will take place in the Ballroom at Wells Town Hall on Saturday, September 28, in aid of St Margaret’s Hospice.

It will cost £10 to enter, and there will be cash prizes for first, second and third place.

“It promises to be a very glitzy and glamorous evening,” said Tina.

The four judges will be recent Mayor of Wells, Celia Wride, Philip Welch of GFM, Jacky Edwards, who played Wishy Washy in Wells pantomime, and Michael Smith, a children’s entertainer.

The compere for the evening is Allan Trinder of GFM. BBC radio presenter Emma Britton, a patron of of St Margaret’s Hospice, will also be at the event.

“Audience tickets are also available for purchase at just £5 a ticket and I’m hoping for a huge audience to cheer on the amazing acts.

“As well as an evening full of razzamatazz and entertainment there will be a drinks interval and a fabulous raffle.”

There will only be time for 35 acts throughout the evening and Tina says that spaces are already

filling quickly. The four judges will give a positive critique of each act, score accordingly, and then decide the winners.

Tina is holding the event for St Margaret’s Hospice after the success of her Wells Festive Windows last Christmas and more recently A Night of Nostalgia in March.

“It’s also something very close to my heart as I did actually appear on Britain’s Got Talent myself, making it through to the ‘Buzzer’ round in Cardiff and then progressing through to the ‘Big Reveal’ in London,” she said.

“Although I knew I wouldn’t progress any further as I was actually five months pregnant at this point, I had lots of fun and it was a very memorable experience.”

PEOPLE travelling overseas this summer are being urged to consider coming home with a Nativity set.

Encouragement to pick up pencil A LEARN to Draw still life course ran for four sessions on Tuesday mornings in March and April at The Bishop’s Palace.

Gemma Lane from Green Fox workshops encouraged participants to try new techniques and learn new ways of drawing ranging from using charcoal and biro to fine liner and pencil. She said: “The majority of participants had not

practised art since they were at school themselves so this was a wonderful introduction and reconnection with art. It also gave the participants more confidence about sketching the world around them and picking up a pencil or pen, which was great to see and hear.”

Gemma is currently offering evening art sessions on Wednesdays in Wells Town Hall.

Plan to create new school car park A NEW school car park could be created and the playground and playing field extended at Horrington Primary School on Bath Road.

The proposals form part of a planning application submitted to Mendip District Council by Tony and Pauline Durston.

In a revised submission of an earlier plan, the new application seeks approval for seven homes at Middle Farm, West Horrington, which the application says is no longer viable as a working farm.

To help alleviate concerns about traffic issues, it is proposed to create the new car park so that parents can drop off and pick up children by the school rather than parking in the village.

The existing car park has eight spaces but the new car park

would provide up to 43. There would also be an extension to the playground and playing field on land to the east of the school. n Farmer Mike Phelps has submitted a planning application for additional temporary car parking at Palace Farm, Wells, on Wednesdays, Saturdays and other event days. The plan envisages a one-way system which would see cars exiting around Palace Farm, where Silver Street meets Southover. n A plan to demolish the skittle alley building at The Mermaid Inn in Tucker Street and build three new houses has been refused. The proposal was considered to represent an overdevelopment of the site, and detrimental to the character and appearance of this part of the Wells Conservation area.

UK unemployment currently stands at 3.8%, a 45-year low, the Office for National Statistics revealed last month. This figure means that unemployment is now at its lowest rate since 1974.

To break that down even further, here in the South West, unemployment is estimated to be at 2.9% – the lowest in the UK. Fantastic news for our economy, people in jobs – that’s what we all want, right?

Absolutely. But the challenges that brings for employers is something completely different.

If you are simply peddling out job adverts with little care and attention and wondering why you aren’t seeing any traction – I’ll tell you why. Because the only people reading it are those 2.9%.

And how many of those 2.9% will be the people who have the right skills for your job? Probably much less.

You need to attract the passive candidates, already in employment.

To keep ahead of the game,

consider a different strategy.

Here are my three top tips for futureproofing your hiring: n Write adverts and compelling recruitment copy, with a strong call to action. Bullet pointed lists of tasks and duties don’t cut it. n Develop a grassroots strategy.

Engage with colleges and universities running courses that align with your industry and build relationships. n Build an internal talent pool, nurture it, engage with it and grow it, so you have a readymade audience for future roles and content.

There’s no silver bullet method to find the best candidates right now. It’s about time, dedicating resource and authenticity in building a strong employer brand.

Party on pitch entertains hundreds THE sun shone, the music played and the beer and cider flowed as hundreds of people turned up to enjoy the very first Party On The Pitch.

Wells City FC’s Rowdens Road ground became a festival site for the day as the club raised money for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

The entertainment started with a game of football between a Wells City FC Select XI and Street. The Paul Randall Charity Cup match attracted a crowd of about 200. A raffle on the gate raised £175 for the air ambulance, and the match day officials also donated their fee for the day to the charity.

The music began at noon, and there were rides and a bouncy castle for children, fairground stalls, food vendors and a bar.

Altogether, up to 1,000 people are thought to have attended during the day.

“The day, although with its

In total, including collections made on the day, the club will be able to donate £1,200 to the air ambulance.

“I had a few sleepless nights beforehand but in the end I am very happy with our first ever Party On The Pitch,” said another of the organisers, Steve Loxton, the club chairman.

“Without our sponsors this day could not have gone ahead we all can’t thank them enough.”

The club received many messages of support afterwards, such as “An excellent day of entertainment and fun, same again next year?”, “Really was a fantastic day out”, and “Such a fab day yesterday at Party On The Pitch, really hope this is a yearly event”.

The club has said that it will be holding the event again next year, and that planning for it has already begun.

Newly named swans settling in at Palace THE Bishop’s Palace’s two new swans have been named Gabriel and Grace.

The names were chosen after nearly 500 people responded via social media, email and in person to an invitation to suggest names.

The Bishop’s Palace said that Gabriel was suggested by several people and has echoes of the angel Gabriel, which fits in with the comparison often made by Palace visitors between angel wings and swans wings, also depicted in the stained-glass sculptures in the Palace Gardens by artist Edgar Phillips.

The name Grace was an extremely popular suggestion, said the Palace, that could remind people of the title style used for royalty, some bishops and archbishops; or of the state of Christian grace, or just the graceful movements of the swans.

They have received training on how to ring the Gatehouse bell for food from Palace administrator Moira Anderson, whose role includes looking after the swans, and Grace has already

learned how to do so.

A second bell has been added on the other side of the Gatehouse so that visitors have more chance of seeing the historic tradition. It was begun by the daughter of Lord Auckland, who was Bishop at the Palace in the 1800s.

Sydney Herbert James 1876 to 1905 and his brother Frederick Charles James 1877 to 1940 The boys’ father, Charles James, was a hairdresser in Broad Street. Sydney worked as a hairdresser alongside his father and Frederick was a baker living in South Street.

Frederick married Florence Mansfield in 1897 and they had six children; Charles, Ernest, Mabel, William, Jack and Leonard.

Sydney also married in 1897, Mabel Rose and they had two children; Dorothy and Reginald.

FACT Broad Street was originally called Wet Lane and was only 12 feet wide. When it was widened in 1864 it was renamed Broad Street.

WELLS City Council is appealing for more sponsors for Wells in Bloom. Sponsorship makes up about 80 per cent of the total running costs of Wells in Bloom, and about £15,000 needs to be raised every year to keep the city’s floral displays filled, watered and maintained.

The Wells in Bloom committee and team of volunteers are very grateful for all the support and gratitude they receive from the local community and visitors to the city, without which Wells in Bloom would not be the success it is today. Bishops at the wheels for event launch TWO bishops got on their bikes to launch an annual fundraiser for a charity that helps protect churches and chapels.

The Rt Rev Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath and Wells, and the Rt Rev Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton, launched the Ride+Stride event at The Bishop’s Palace, Wells.

Ride+Stride raises money for the Somerset Churches Trust, which gives grants for repairs and improvements to churches and chapels across the county.

Supporters walk, cycle or even ride a horse between the participating churches and other Christian places of worship and raise money through sponsorship and donations.

This year’s event takes place on Saturday, September 14.

Bishop Peter said: “I first took part in a Ride+Stride event some 20 years ago and I have enjoyed every one of them that I have been able to participate in since then.

Somerset Churches Trust does a wonderful job in supporting churches and other places of

Group trying to cut use of glyphosate WELLS Cathedral School has been praised for allowing vegetation to grow along the edge of its playing fields near Tor Woods instead of treating it with weedkiller.

Photographs (right) taken a year apart, in May this year and May last year, show a dramatic difference in the amount of greenery.

The photos have been shared by campaign group Sustainable Wells which is pushing for an end to the use of glyphosate, a chemical used in weedkillers such as Roundup that they say can be harmful to human health as well as to wildlife.

The group is talking with the school to find ways of keeping the area glyphosate free as much as possible, and is going to carry out a survey of residents who live nearby for their thoughts and ideas, including whether they would be prepared to help manage the area.

“There are alternatives to the chemical weedkillers but these are mainly dessicants which dry foliage, not kill roots,” said Laura Sorensen of Sustainable Wells.

“The Cathedral School in Wells has tried New Way and Glastonbury is using a product which is a foamstream.”

Comments about the photos on Facebook have included “Love this. Well done,” and “This is so much more natural – and healthy for wildlife.”

A Wells Cathedral School spokesperson said: “We’re thrilled to see our playing fields next to Tor Woods looking so beautiful at this time of year. We haven’t had any major change of policy, but we are constantly reviewing how we look after

Sustainable Wells has also been in discussions with Mendip District Council about the use of weedkillers by its contractors Id Verde, such as alongside the Moat in Wells.

It also says it is concerned that weedkillers have been sprayed in places such as Wells bus station while members of the public are nearby.

A Mendip District Council spokeseperson said: “Mendip District Council continue to review its use of products and any associated risks.

Specifically, weedkillers are applied in low quantities and only where needed with a view to keeping the district clean and tidy, and only once risk assessments have been completed. MDC is committed to working with Sustainable Wells to continuously review this process.”

Bandstand dates for the summer WELLS City Band has said it appreciated the support given by the people of Wells for the first bandstand event of the summer.

Spotlight on care services in BBC’s Panorama specials SOMERSET County Council is helping to bring the pressures facing care for the elderly and vulnerable to the attention of a national audience.

The council’s Adult Social Care services are the subject of two hour-long films by the BBC’s Panorama team, scheduled to be broadcast on BBC1 at 9pm on May 29 and June 5. They look at the issue of pressure on social care services as the population ages, setting out the need for a national plan to sustainably fund care in the long-term.

The films are the result of ten months the BBC team spent following council staff and several case studies of people moving through the care system.

They also showcase Somerset’s social workers, family carers, care providers, health colleagues and voluntary and community organisations helping support thousands of people in the county.

The films show the difficult decisions that come with the growing demand for care from

an ageing population at a time of limited funding. And they pose difficult questions about the costs of care, who pays them and the future role society plays in supporting vulnerable people.

“The stories told in these films are playing out up and down the country,” said Stephen Chandler, Director of Adult Services.

“We agreed to get involved in these films because we want to play our part in putting these issues on people’s agendas.

“More funding and more certainty of funding is important, but it won’t provide all the answers. These films also ask important questions of all of us about the future of care, what we want for our loved ones when they need care, and what role our communities should have in looking after people when they need support.

“There are no easy answers but doing nothing is not an option and these are issues and questions relevant to every community in this country.”

Chocolate the favourite treat THE Wookey Hole Witch gave away half a million chocolate eggs this Easter – while healthy gift alternatives provided for visitors to Wookey Hole Caves were practically untouched.

Managing Director Daniel Medley said: “We always offer an Easter treat as part of the ticket price over the three-week holiday. In an effort to encourage a healthier choice and do our bit to help reduce childhood obesity we had offered toy gifts as well as chocolate eggs.

“We were expecting at least half the children to go for the healthy alternative – but just three youngsters opted for the toy. I think the results speak for themselves – the public are getting fed up with the constant media warnings to eat fruit and

“I FIND the cafe a great consolation and social meeting place which has helped me greatly as I feel very isolated often. The church is so peaceful.”

That comment comes from a regular customer at Coffee Stop, held in St Thomas’ Church, Wells, on Tuesdays from 9am to noon.

Held since the beginning of March, anyone is welcome to call in for tea and toast, or coffee and cake.

One young mother said there are many reasons why she goes along.

“I saw an advert for St Thomas’ Church Coffee Stop a couple of months ago and decided to see what it was all about; I haven’t missed a morning since,” she said.

“There are so many reasons why my two young girls and I love it so much. For the children there are lots of toys to play with, different craft activities to do and lots of space to explore.

MID Somerset Oxfam Group is holding an open evening and AGM on Monday, June 3, where the principal speaker will be an Oxfam volunteer who visited North West Tanzania in March 2018 as part of an Oxfam team.

Rob Bygrave will talk about how the team examined a variety of community projects that are being supported by Oxfam in this challenging region of East Africa.

Rob will then be joined by the community engagement manager and the manager of Wells’ Oxfam shop who will give an update on the community and shop activities and how they are working together for the mutual benefit of the community in and around Wells.

They will also provide an update on the progress being made to help the people and communities affected by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

The event takes place in the Denning Room, Union Street, Wells, 7pm for 7.30pm.

THE defibrillator located outside the Tincknell Fuels head office in Wookey Hole Road has been in place for just over a year now.

It has not yet been used in an emergency, but it is a valuable piece of equipment available to the public 24 hours a day.

There will be a defibrillator awareness evening at the offices on Thursday, June 20, at 6pm, when the NHS’s Kim Davey will provide information and guidance on this life-saving equipment.

MINI masterpieces will be on display when the Hilliard Society of Miniaturists’ annual exhibition opens on Saturday, June 1.

June deadline for competition entries WRITERS and poets are being reminded that there is still time to enter this year’s Wells Festival of Literature competitions.

The competitions, for open poetry; short story; book for children, and young poet, offer the chance to win up to £750.

The open poetry judge is Simon Armitage, who has just been named as the next Poet Laureate.

The deadline for competition entries is June 30, and the festival takes place this year from October 18-26.

Among its aims, it is committed to making a difference in local schools where budget restraints can restrict them from offering extra creative events that inspire children’s imagination.

Last year raised £20,000, funding activities for 2,000 children in 44 local schools.

Authors, storytellers, poets, rappers and theatre groups led fun-filled events and workshops such as Plays in the Playground and weekly poems by post.

Funds come from four important sources: ticket sales – £2.93 of every £10 ticket; sponsorship; writing competition entry fees, and the Festival Friends.

Once the list of festival speakers is revealed in July, many sell out swiftly. However, becoming a Friend guarantees priority booking, 10 per cent discount, an invitation to the festival launch party and a free invitation-only evening for

Art exhibition with a difference THIS summer there will be the chance to experience something different at The Bishop’s Palace when a new collaboration between the Palace and Heritage Courtyard Gallery and Studios (HCGS) opens to the public.

Curated by co-directors of HCGS, Heather Wallace and Rebecca Barnard, the exhibition will be called RE-FORMATION and will showcase diverse work from West Country artists of all ages. It will be a ‘whole site’ exhibition, with artworks in the Gardens, along the Ramparts, in the Great Hall, Long Gallery, Panelled Room and Exhibition Room. The media used will include video art, performance art, ceramics, painting, sculpture and drawing.

HCGS is a unique contemporary gallery with 10 artists’ studios in the heart of Wells, dedicated to supporting Somerset and West Country artists of the highest standard.

“There is a wealth of creative talent on our doorstep which we do our best to encourage at all levels,” said Heather. “This year we are inviting our talented

British Legion,” said film centre proprietor Sally Cooper.

“The weekend saw lots of people supporting our array of films all covering heroes from different areas.

“We even had local vegan film director Darren Cavanagh in attendance who did a Q&A on his film and also spoke to our young audience on how to make a great film trailer.”

Mental health training opportunities THE Heads Up mental health charity at South Horrington launched its new training room on April 26.

Introduction speeches were given by Wells county councillor and Heads Up patron Tessa Munt, and John Law representing the Freemasons, who donated £1,000 to pay for the training room chairs.

Those who attended the launch event included Lucy Nelson representing the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, members of the Clinical Commissioning Group, local businesses, charity organisations, and a variety of representatives from across the public sector services and local authorities.

n FROM THE TOWN HALL THERE is a desire for change at Wells City Council.

That was made clear by the fact that 11 of the 16 members are new.

Also that every seat for the public were filled when the new council met for the first time – an encouraging trend seen at the last two meetings of the old council. Previously there were often only a handful of Wells citizens there.

I have been talking to representatives of all the parties on the new council and we share a commitment to work together for Wells. We agreed to: 1. Form a Climate Change Committee and include members of the public on it.

2. Review the council’s Standing Orders to see if they need updating.

3. Complete the Wells Neighbourhood Plan which will give local people more of a say on the future development of their city.

4. Seek to return control of the

Recreation Ground and Bishop’s Barn to Wells from Mendip District Council.

5. Lobby more powerful organisations hard to get a better deal for Wells. They include Mendip and Somerset County Council.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS CIVIC SOCIETY WHAT a cornucopia the audience at the May meeting of the Wells Civic Society were treated to when Councillor Celia Wride whisked them through a few of the 200-plus events she had attended as Wells’ most recent and 645th mayor.

It all started, of course, with mayor-making and swearing her oath on the Bible while wondering just what lay in store for her, and making a mark by letting it be known that she wished to be called Madam Mayor, the first time this form of address had been used.

From there it seems never to have stopped as she went everywhere in and around the city and was clearly appreciated by everybody. The range of events and activities was legion in number and diversity. One of the major results of this was the mayor’s two charities for the year, St John Ambulance and The Lawrence Centre, benefited jointly by some £7,500.

Evidently, she needed to be

Celia said at the beginning of the evening that she hoped to entertain the civic society, but there were serious moments, too. The Commemorative Poppy Trail was a feature of the year 2018, and the audience virtually

had its own two-minute silence linked to a film clip of part of the city’s remembrance. Of very general interest was her support for the project to buy a decommissioned BT phone box, house a defibrillator in it, and probably site it adjacent to the town hall, which it is hoped will happen quite soon.

Celia emphasised that she had set out not to be a stand-

offish sort of mayor, but to be approachable and a hands-on mayor. She said with some feeling that being mayor was not about the person, but about this, pointing to her mayoral chain as she did so.

But she did allude to funny moments, such as when at one of the many Christmas events she attended a Father Christmas nearly caught his beard alight, and embarrassing moments, such as when the mayor’s official seat and that of the mayoress were already occupied at an important and formal occasion.

Accompanied by her mayoress, her daughter Sarah, whose support throughout she had obviously much appreciated, Celia had given us a helterskelter of a ride through their year. The most appreciative vote of thanks, both for the evening and for the mayoral year just ending, given by the chair of the society, Chris Winter, was very clearly echoed in the warm applause from the large audience.

Richard Hanks INNER WHEEL CLUB OF WELLS WE are pleased to report that a very successful Charity Quiz Night was held at the end of March at The Britannia Inn. There were several competing functions in Wells that night and so we were delighted to welcome eight teams. Local quizmaster Dave and team provided a wide range of questions but the winners were the Ne’er-dowells who generously donated their prize money to Jessie’s Fund, making the total raised a creditable £269.

Seven of our members travelled to Cardiff in April to attend the Annual Conference at the Motorpoint Arena. In all around 2,000 attended and in addition to Inner Wheel officials we heard from the Rev Kate Bottley, who appeared on Gogglebox, speakers from the Silver Line charity, Jessie’s Fund and the Hope and Homes for Children.

We were entertained hearing about the adventures of Ed Pratt, the Somerset lad who spent three and a half years riding around the world on a unicycle raising money for School in a Bag. His talk was met with rapturous applause from the audience.

We welcomed members of Wells Rotary Club to our April meeting when our speaker was Commander Phillip Unwin, whose talk about the SS Great Britain being the ‘Concorde of its day’, was very interesting.

He told us how it was brought back to Bristol and about its restoration and journey back to life.

His talk was enjoyed by members and guests and plans are in hand to visit Bristol next year to see the ship.

Inner Wheel Club of Wells members at Stourhead the District Picnic on May 2 when we all met at Stourhead for coffee and cake with Inner Wheel friends. The rest of the day was free to enjoy the grounds and house, to picnic or do as we did and sample a nice pub lunch.

The weather was fine, albeit a little chilly, but all in all it was ‘A Grand Day Out’.

Liz Hamblin WELLS WI THIS month saw our AGM. Our president Jane reviewed another successful year, praising the way members have shown great enterprise in setting up special interest sub-groups and thanking those who lead sessions for women interested in crafts, reading, cooking, skittles and walking among other things and, soon, walking netball.

Activities over the last year had ranged from running a tea tent at the Bath and West show, putting together bags of useful items for the homeless at Christmas and taking part in the Wake Up Wells event. We had experienced a great programme of talks and enjoyed some brilliant social occasions. Our treasurer Barbara reported that finances were healthy. Although we have 61 members paying subscriptions, rising costs of hall hire and speakers means it will be important to continue to spend sensibly. The committee were all re-elected to their current roles.

from a short list of six. The two that emerged top nationwide were: tackling the decline in local bus services and increasing take up of cervical cancer screening.

Wells WI members supported these two causes going forward to further debate at the National Conference in June. Last year the group decided to support resolutions that, despite being popular, didn’t make the final cut in the 2018 selection process.

One of these was promoting positive body image in an age of digital enhancement and social media pressure.

Our first fundraiser, a coffee morning kindly hosted by member Shirley, raised £70 for the Somerset and Wessex Eating Disorders Association.

After all the business chat we enjoyed a swish, swapping clothes and books, with any unbagged at the end of the evening going to a local charity shop, whilst eating finger food we had brought to share.

Arrangements were finalised for two outings: our visit to Carymoor Environmental Centre, following the popular talk from Carymoor’s CEO last autumn; and a subsidised coach trip to the American Museum in Bath later in the summer.

Members sponsored Zoe and Angela to take part in the London Moonwalk (it took them nine hours and raised £2,000 for breast cancer).

We then sat back to listen to our member Tessa Munt who updated us about climate change developments in Somerset. Increasing public awareness and concern has united local authorities at all levels in declaring the situation an emergency. It is hoped this will facilitate more joined up thinking and constructive dialogue between local councils and national government departments.

Somerset Climate Action Network is looking at what can be done to mitigate the consequences of historic damage, assessing whether our defences are adequate for rising sea levels and how farmland can best be managed to accommodate flooding. Improvements are planned to our kerbside recycling but, sadly, fly tipping remains a chronic problem in the Mendip area.

Action we can take at an individual level includes giving more thought to what we eat and

how we shop – supermarkets respond to public pressure, and demand for more sustainable and ethical food is increasing.

We could urge councils to make solar panels obligatory in planning applications to build schools and houses.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 4, at 7.30pm at the Wells & Mendip Museum, when we will have a talk and cookery demonstration from Adam Fellows of Goodfellows restaurant.

More details are on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ Wellssomersetwi/ Veronica Howe WELLS CULTURE CLUB IN a quiet corner of Wells nestled in the slopes above the city is a place of reflection, contemplation, peace and a unique and amazing legacy of the social history of Wells.

It is the Mendip Hospital Cemetery where 3,000 patients of the Lunatic Asylum are laid to rest, their graves marked with simple iron pegs etched with a number, the only reminder of their existence. Some private patients and members of staff had headstones.

Wells Culture Club had a fascinating tour led by Pete Jaggard, and his love of this special place and his stories of some of the residents touched everyone.

Maintained entirely by volunteers, whose respect and determination have preserved this important burial ground along with the history of the asylum itself. The chapel in the cemetery, a simple but respectful building, contains an exhibition with photographs of some of the Victorian inmates and information about their lives at the asylum.

Consecrated in 1874, the last burials took place on the site in 1963.

Well worth a visit on one of their open days, the site is preserved for the future by the good grace of the Friends of Mendip Hospital Cemetery and donations are very welcome to help ensure its future: www. mendiphospitalcemetery.org.uk Clare Blackmore

Old photograph is focus of attention INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day was celebrated in Wells with an event in March at what is locally known as the Portway Annex.

The building, on the corner of Portway Avenue, and which now houses the Somerset Skills & Learning centre, is significant in terms of its architecture and its place in the social history of Wells.

Built at the turn of the 20th century it has all the attributes of the arts and crafts style of the time. It was the first school in Wells built specifically for girls to accommodate the increasing numbers attending the (then mostly boys) Blue School, which was on the site of the current Little Theatre.

As part of research for the exhibitions for the celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD), an early photograph of the building and information about it was discovered by Wells City Archives – which holds the

The event sparked interest in the building not only with residents of Wells but also with those currently working there.

RUGBY ON the field Wells may not have had their most successful of seasons, but that did not stop the end of season party held on May 10 once again being a roaring success.

Nearly 250 members and guests gathered in the marquee erected on the pitch for the presentations, dinner and dancing.

There was also the little matter of the auction thrown in, the star lot being a dinner cooked

in your own home by chef Sean Boyle raising £550. In total, £2,685 was raised.

The awards to the players are many and various as all four teams are involved, but from the 1st team, the Players Player and Supporters Player awards went to Jamie Payne, Young Player of the Season, Mason Brook, whilst captain Al Knight walked off with the Golden Boot and the Coaches Player of the Season trophy.

Tommy Corns, organiser in chief of events big and small, was voted Clubman of the Year.

Kennedy spoke of the club’s most successful years, the win at Twickenham and reaching Tribute South West One and playing the likes of Camborne, Weston-super-Mare and Bridgwater and Albion.

Next season former 1st team captain Al Simmons will take over aided by a group of senior players. Club chairman Nick Heath will be in charge of the Colts. Rebuilding begins.

Mrs B’s Caring Catering was once again in charge of the excellent meal whilst the Undercovers provided the music.

Bright start to new season TENNIS THE summer tennis season got underway at Wells with newly painted bright blue courts and clubhouse.

Officially opened by club president Tasha Smith on Saturday, May 11, the five refreshed full size courts will be fit for the summer season and beyond.

Tasha said: “The club is delighted to start the new season with the courts looking bright and tidy and fit for purpose.

Please come and visit us – we are always happy to welcome new people.”

Wells Tennis Club now starts its summer season with eight teams competing in the North Somerset League, coaching for juniors and adults available to non-members and its open days scheduled for Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 21.

The club is continuing to work with Wells Rugby Club on its proposed move to Haybridge that could include indoor courts.

Just before the league season started, the club held its annual Easter Tournament on Easter Monday. It was well attended and there was a lively atmosphere in the fine weather that spanned the Easter weekend.

The format was an ‘American Tournament’ which rotates players and gives everyone the chance to play with a variety of partners. This leant itself to a very sociable and fun atmosphere with sudden death deuces and no lets on serves.

There were six rounds and the winners were presented with a suitably festive Easter egg. For the men, Dave Mills scored 25, pipping Martyn Holliday who scored 23. On the women’s side it was very close and Anne Fudge scored 23, edging out Tasha Smith who scored 22. Everyone stayed to enjoy some lunch as the day warmed up and the chocolate started to melt.

City manager collects award FOOTBALL WELLS City FC 1st team manager Nathan Truckle picked up the Respect Manager award at the Toolstation Western League annual convention held in Plymouth in May. The award is given by the FA and scored by the matchday officials for the management teams at each game through the season. The Wells management team is Nathan and Tom Clifford Jones.

IN the first game of the season, away at Middlezoy, Wells were put in to bat and got off to a shaky start at 20 for 2 before And Tyrer and Henry Hunt (42) steadied the ship. James Dredge scored a stylish 56 and Dan Vassalli at no 6 finished the innings off perfectly, smashing 73 as Wells finished on a well above par 281 for 7.

In reply, Middlezoy reached 80 for 1 in quick time. Wiltshire got the important breakthrough of opener Robinson and then the crucial wicket of the impressive Dillow (50). Vince Johnson and Dave Stacey claimed 4 wickets apiece as Middlezoy collapsed to 150 all out.

With opponents in the second game, Uphill Castle, relegated from WEPL and Wells just promoted to the Somerset Prem, this had the hallmarks of an intriguing game. Bowling first, captain Ollie Smart was in fine form as he claimed 3 for 15. Jones counter-attacked with an agricultural 56, but once he was gone the Uphill team soon imploded, with Vassalli picking up 4 wickets and Johnson 3 as Uphill mustered 137 all out.

They could only muster 257 all out as they fell a frustrating 15 runs short to lose their first game in 16 matches.

Opening move CROQUET THE Palace Croquet Club’s new season was officially opened by club president, Bishop of Bath and Wells the Rt Rev Peter Hancock, at The Bishop’s Palace on May 23. Club games will be played on the Palace croquet lawn every afternoon except weekends until mid-October.

HORRINGTON have returned one win and two losses from their first three games in Division Five.

Facing fellow promoted side Wedmore first up, Horry fell to a six-wicket defeat. Batting first, Horrington set 143 thanks to Russell (38), Rivers (42) and Vincent (33). In reply, Wedmore reached the total with relative ease, thanks to a half century from Evans. Gould, Parsons, Cottell and Graham Russell each picked up a wicket.

Despite the mixed results, it has been good to see many youngsters stepping up to the plate this season. All four under 18s – Stan Gould, Tom Jones, Oscar Sheppard-Western and Daniel Peters – have performed brilliantly when called upon. At the other end of the scale, Mike Fear and Kevin Russell have both proven that a step up in division will not stop them. Graham Russell has been another stand out performer with both bat and ball.
