Health food shop boss: ‘It’s great to be back’ COMPANY boss Nick Shutts is delighted to be back in Wells with a shop in the same location that he had one once before.

Grape Tree is taking over what was at one time Julian Graves, and was most recently Jones the Bootmaker, at 4 High Street.

The Grape Tree health food brand has been launched by entrepreneur Nick and partner Nigel Morris, who together built the Julian Graves health food brand of 350 stores.

Nick said: “It’s great to be back in Wells in the same spot that we traded as Julian Graves where we had many loyal customers.”

Work to get the new shop ready follows soon after the opening of the Seasalt women’s clothing store in what was the Intersport Tony Pryce shop.

Pair set sights on slice of history with sauerkraut world record

Katie Venner, left, and Jo Webster The world record challenge will see hundreds of helpers chopping up 350 cabbages, which will be salted with 7kg of salt, tamped down into large vats, and left to bacterially ferment for at least a week.

There will then be a final weigh-in, after which the sauerkraut will be put into jars

and distributed across Wells to cafes, restaurants, schools and individuals.

Jo and Katie met at last year’s food festival over Katie’s vegetable fermentation demonstration. Sharing an interest in microbes, gut health and fermented foods, they hatched a plan to create a community event to draw attention to what they say are the simple things everyone can do to keep their guts healthy – like eating more veg and fermenting some of it.

“Katie and I started this journey for one reason only – we feel passionately that the state of our health affects our quality of life,” said Jo, who lives in Wells.

“We can do more to take back responsibility for the state of our own health. And improving our gut health is a great place to start. Initially, Guinness turned us down, but they eventually realised that bacterially fermented cabbage has unique characteristics that a plate of boiled cabbage lacks, so they

Becky Branch at the Branch and Bloom site in Market Street, Wells

More space for growing business FLOWER seller Becky Branch has expanded her operation after fruit and vegetable supplier Shawn Goodman moved out of the unit they shared in Market Street.

Becky’s Branch and Bloom business now fills all of what was known as The Veg Shed with cut flowers, plants and pots.

“It’s been wonderful to expand into the unit,” said Becky, who grows her own flowers in a field near Wells during the growing season.

“By expanding I’ve also started to fill the shop with beautiful creations from local artists who provide ceramics for the plants and flowers that I sell.

I also now stock cards from local illustrators as I feel passionate about supporting other small

businesses. People have been really lovely about the expansion with lots of positive comments and I’m looking forward to more new and exciting plans for Branch and Bloom in the future.”

Shawn said that he decided to move on due to fluctuating and rising prices at the fruit and veg market, and not enough customers getting behind his plastic free operation.

“I’m currently re-strategising The Veg Shed. We are operating online at the moment, providing strawberries for occasions and events, as well as stocking local independents like the Queen Street Deli in Wells,” he said.

“I’m also doing several local markets, and we are on track to re-start our very popular weekly fruit and veg boxes soon.”

Fireplaces firm opens showroom A SHOWROOM for Agas and woodburners has been opened in Priory Road, Wells, by South West Fireplaces. Managing director Alex Gooby started the firm, which is based in Compton Bishop, nine years ago.

“We’re a family-run, friendly business and we offer a good range of stoves, woodburners and pizza ovens,” said Alex.

“We’re trying to grow and get more local apprentices working for us.”

There will be a grand opening of the showroom in the next few weeks, although it is already open for people to place orders and book installations.

“I was at school in Wells so it’s like coming home,” said Alex.

He was once a student at Wells Cathedral School, where his grandfather Alan Quilter was

Two new stores fill gaps in High Street From page 1 The shop is currently being fitted out and is expected to open soon, adding to Grape Tree’s portfolio of almost 100 stores across the UK. The shops sell a variety of health foods, nuts, seeds, dried and crystallised fruit, snacks, confectionery, cooking and baking ingredients.

The Seasalt clothes and accessories shop was opened in June by first customer in the queue Siobhan Goodwin.

Siobhan, who works parttime at The Bishop’s Palace and runs her own business, Wells Walking Tours, was asked to cut the ribbon after waiting outside for nearly two hours.

She was also given a voucher for £100 to spend in the shop, the Cornish brand’s 53rd.

“When I woke up at 6.50 on the Saturday morning I thought I would give it a go,” she said.

“I brought my book and my deckchair and had a great time chatting to lots of lovely folk who were out and about bright and early on Saturday morning.

The staff started arriving at 8am and kindly brought me a very welcome cup of tea. That’s the first time I have ever cut a ribbon.

“I have been in to try some things on and have decided to buy a lovely dress with sailing boats on it.

“Seasalt will be a popular addition to our High Street.

“I like the way the shop was fitted out, especially the beautiful mosaic in the doorway, and the staff are really helpful and friendly.”

Others in the queue were given a Seasalt goody bag, there were free scones with jam and Cornish clotted cream, Cornish

fudge and apple juice, and shanty singers The Longest Johns sang traditional folk songs and sea shanties outside the store.

Seasalt co-founder and chairman Neil Chadwick said

before the opening: “We are looking forward to opening our third shop in Somerset.

“It’s such a beautiful county and the people are so friendly and welcoming.”

Time to close, decide cafe owners CAFE owners Mandy Tucker and Pete Cumming have poured their last coffee after closing the doors to their business. The couple shut Square Edge, near the Town Hall, for the final time on June 17, having run it for four years.

“I’m sorry to be closing, we have loved it and have met some really lovely people but it’s time

for us to get a better work-life balance,” said Mandy.

“We are not sure yet what we will be doing in the long term, but short term we want to see more of our families and catch up with friends.

“Thank you to all our customers for their support over the last four years.”

Choir set for first Wells concert

Police launch knife amnesty

MEMBERS of the new Wells Good Afternoon Choir are looking forward to their first concert in the city.

The non-audition choir started singing together earlier this year, led by Bath’s ‘Mr Music’ Grenville Jones, and already the choir has more than 50 members. The accent is very much on making friends and enjoying a full repertoire of music.

Their first concert in Wells will be at St Cuthbert’s Church on Saturday, July 7, when they will welcome the celebrated Bath Male Choir for a concert with music for all tastes and chances to join in.

Bath Male Choir hit the headlines when they reached the finals of the BBC’s Last Choir Standing series and are one of the leading male choirs in the country, never failing to bring an audience to its feet. Recordings and tours including a visit to Japan three years ago have established them as a hugely popular concert choir.

WELLS Police are holding a knife amnesty as part of a national initiative to tackle knife crime.

Knife surrender bins have been placed at a number of locations across the Avon and Somerset force area, including at the Wells Police Station in Glastonbury Road.

Members of the public will be able to hand in knives at the station without prosecution until the end of July as part of Operation Sceptre.

“This knife amnesty is an opportunity to protect our loved ones from serious harm or a life changing conviction,” said PC Darren Pearson.

The Wells station is open from 10am-6pm Monday to Friday.

“We are all looking forward to our first public sing in Wells,” said Grenville.

“If anyone would like to know more about the choir, they are very welcome to come along

to any rehearsal on a Tuesday afternoon at the Seager Hall to find out more.”

Members of the Wells Good Afternoon Choir have chosen a local organisation, the Bumble Bus, to benefit from their fundraising this year, including the concert on July 7. They hope to raise at least £1,000 by the end of this year.

The Bumble Bus, run by Hope for Tomorrow, visits places where cancer care is needed most, providing chemotherapy and other cancer services at places such as West Mendip Hospital in Glastonbury.

Bandstand concert featuring male voice choir WELLS Lions have teamed up with Wells City Council to present an exciting outdoor concert with Glastonbury Male Voice Choir at the Bandstand in the Wells Recreation Ground in July.

This is expected to be the only major concert on the Bandstand this summer. A grant from Wells City Council and the voluntary efforts of the choir and Wells Lions have made it possible.

The two-hour concert will

feature classic and contemporary songs from the popular choir’s large repertoire, performed in four-part harmony.

The concert is free to attend.

Donations will be collected

by Wells Lions in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society, which is the Glastonbury choir’s nominated charity for this year.

Refreshments will be available, and all concert-goers are encouraged to bring their own chairs and rugs to sit on.

Lions President Paul Clegg said: “We brought the Bristol Male Voice Choir to Wells earlier this year, and Caerphilly last year. With this wonderful support from Wells City Council we’re delighted now to have Glastonbury Male Voice Choir in our great city to entertain us.”

Friends busy organising school summer barbecue THE popular summer barbecue will take place at Stoberry Park Primary School on Friday, June 29, from 6pm-9pm.

There will be stalls, games, face-painting and a bar supplied by the Wild Beer Co. The event is organised by the Circle of Friends, the school’s PTA. The Circle of Friends is a registered charity running events for both the school and

community. Money raised goes directly towards enhancing the experience of pupils of Stoberry Park with items such as iPads and the new library refurbishment.

Most recently, it is looking to provide a defibrillator unit available to the whole community.

Voice impresses awards judges WELLS Voice was named one of the top three new businesses of the year at this year’s Mendip Business Awards.

The awards, hosted by ITV’s Somerset correspondent Ben McGrail, took place at the Bath & West Showground during the Bath & West Show.

Winner of the category was the Brewed Boy bar in Frome.

Orchestra pit change of plan WELLS Little Theatre has had to abandon plans to extend the orchestra pit after an Arts Council funding application was rejected.

It hopes to use money already raised from donors to improve the existing pit instead.

More action taken in fight against plastic MEMBERS of Plastic Free Wells have handed over a cheque for £731 to the local representative of a group leading the campaign against plastic pollution.

Tom Ronan of Plastic Free Wells presented the cheque to Surfers Againt Sewage group local representative Mark Wakeling.

The money was raised at a concert in Wells Town Hall on April 28.

Among those at the handover ceremony was Andy Woodward from Wells accountants Probusiness, who are giving away 480 reusable coffee cups in support of Plastic Free Wells.

As part of the community engagement required as they continue to work towards gaining Plastic Free accreditation, Plastic Free Wells have arranged a screening of the film Plastic Ocean in Wells Town Hall on Wednesday, June 27, at 2.30pm.

There will be another screening of the film, which explores the impact of plastic in the planet’s seas, in the Town Hall on Monday, July 30, at 7pm.

Coffee cups being given away in support of campaign ACCOUNTANTS Probusiness are giving away more than 400 reuseable coffee cups to help with the Plastic Free bid and as a thank you to the community.

The 10oz coffee cups are being donated to local coffee shops, which in turn can give them out with the purchase of a takeaway drink. The cups are

dishwasher safe and are sold in larger outlets, but, as a thank you to their local community for its support over its 25 years, Probusiness felt it was something they could do to help.

Family to keep up log supply service THE family of Wells log supplier Mike Parsons are going to keep the business going after his sudden death in May. Mike, who would have been 80 in June, died of an aneurysm within hours of first feeling unwell, having completed a normal nine-hour shift the day before. His wife Doreen said that she and their son Mark, daughters Wendy and Cheryl and their grandchildren are determined that the business will continue, and that they will carry on supplying logs to people in the area.

“He started the business as a hobby when he retired 20 years ago,” said Doreen.

“The day before he died he worked from 7am to 4pm. He went from working flat out one day to at peace the next.”

Two special wishes that Mike had made were honoured on the day of his funeral. One was to have his coffin transported to the crematorium on the back of his log delivery lorry, driven by Mark, accompanied

A CHRISTMAS card pop-up shop that has been running in Wells for nearly 40 years is now at risk unless a new manager can be recruited.

Cards for Good Causes sells national and local charity Christmas cards in the seasonal shop at St Cuthbert’s Church. The previous manager has recently retired after more than 30 years in the role so a new manager is being sought to oversee the shop, which will run from mid-October to mid-December.

No previous retail experience is necessary, says area manager Jasmine Dyer, hours can be flexible, and it could be shared by two people. A small sum is paid at the end of the season.

Caves route discovery gives adventure extra excitement CAVERS have uncovered a lost passage connecting chambers at Wookey Hole Caves for the first time – opening up an exciting new route for adventurers.

Caving enthusiasts from the Mendip Nature Research Committee have teased out a ‘reputed’ connection between Charon’s Chamber with the adjacent Troup’s Rift, put forward by Stanton and Barrington in their book The Caves of Mendip in 1977, enabling people to venture even further into the limestone labyrinth deep beneath the Mendip Hills.

Daniel Medley, director at Wookey Hole Caves, said Charon’s chamber – named after the ferryman who transported the dead across the river Styx – previously ended in a choked rift with no apparent way through.

“The latest exploratory work involved moving a quantity of rocks and gravel to reveal the connection which had only ever been reputed to exist,” he said.

THE lease has been sold for the Mendip Inn on the A37 near Wells.

It was bought by Matthew Lowe, who has a strong background in hospitality, having worked in cocktail bars in South Africa before moving to the UK and taking up work in various pub kitchens.

He said: “My plan for the Mendip Inn is to create a new menu using local ingredients from farms and businesses around the area, to increase the drinks offering by bringing in local gins with a variety of 15 flavours, and to increase the front of house staff providing one full time job and three part time jobs.

“There will also be a strong focus on our Christmas menu to cater for parties of up to 120.”

Mr Lowe is keen to get involved in local charity and community events as well, with plans to make the Mendip Inn an integral part of the community.

The inn was previously run

by Jon Rossi, whose brother Nick looks after the Ancient Gatehouse Hotel and Rugantinos Restaurant in Sadler Street, Wells.

The pair also own neighbouring hotel The White Hart, which was leased out almost three years ago.

The sale of the Mendip Inn lease was completed by specialist business property adviser Christie & Co.

The city’s inaugural theatre festival takes place between Thursday, July 12, and Sunday, July 15.

Festival with legendary status in calendar HUNDREDS of people will enjoy food, drink and music at Palace Farm in July at this year’s Romulus and Remus Italian festival.

The event is a fundraiser for local charities and is held to commemorate the good relationship formed between the Italian prisoners of war and the local community.

It is named after the historic monument of a wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, at Penn Hill where the festival was held previously.

The statue was made by an Italian prisoner of war called Gaetano Celestra, one of many who worked on farms in this area towards the end of the Second World War. Gaetano Celestra was a builder and stonemason and he and his fellow POWs were given the task of repairing a wall which had been damaged by a German bomb.

The Romulus and Remus statue made by Gaetano Celestra He was given permission to work on the statue with his colleagues in their spare time as a way of saying thank you to the local people for their kindness during their enforced stay in the area. The statue, which is made of concrete over a wire frame and stands about four metres high,

was erected in 1945. There is a plaque at the foot of the statue, which summarises the legend of Romulus and Remus: “According to legend Romulus and Remus were the twin sons of Mars, the God of War, and vestal virgin Rhea Silvia. Amulius, the king, had the babies placed in a trough and cast into the River Tiber. They drifted ashore and were rescued by a female wolf, who suckled, fed and protected them until Faustulus, a shepherd, and his wife found them and raised them into adulthood.

Romulus and Remus both had plans to build a city but had such a violent disagreement about who should be king that Romulus killed Remus. Romulus built the city, which he ruled, as king, for forty years. That city was Rome – founded in 753 BC.” Mendip District Council’s conservation team applied for special protection for the Romulus and Remus statue

from English Heritage, putting forward the case that the statue on Penn Hill demonstrated the significant legacy of Wells’ prisoner of war camps and was of social and cultural importance in Mendip.

This view was backed by the British government through the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, which in 2008 gave its seal of approval for the feature to be included as a Grade II listed statue among the country’s List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.

Food producers set to open doors in first event of its kind SOMERSET’S first food trail event, Taste the Landscape, will take place this July, with dozens of food producers opening their doors to the public.

Taste the Landscape celebrates the best of locally produced, delicious and sustainable food by showcasing Somerset’s farmers and producers as well as its retailers, cafes, pubs and restaurants.

Participants range from goat herders, cider makers and dairy farmers to cheesemakers, pubs, vineyards, artisan bakers and vegetable growers.

Modelled on arts trails such as Somerset Art Works, the food trail will see farmers and food producers opening their doors to the public at set times from Friday, July 20, to Sunday, July 29. Participating pubs, cafes and restaurants will offer a special menu featuring locally sourced food during the event.

There will also be a series of activities such as picnics, vineyard and mill tours and pizza making. The event is mostly free to visitors, with a modest charge for some special events.

Taste the Landscape is organised by a group of community organisations that are passionate about local sustainable food. They include Wells Food Network, Reimagining The Levels, Somerset Community Food, Somerset Food Direct and Green Wedmore.

Wells Food Network chair Stewart Crocker said: “Food and farming have been a vital part of the life of Somerset for generations. Yet our food and farming system is under pressure as never before and diet-related health problems, such as type two diabetes and obesity, are on the rise.

“We believe that by putting healthy, sustainable food at the heart of all we do, we can strengthen our communities, conserve our countryside and boost our local economy.

“Taste the Landscape celebrates the great work being done by so many small-scale Somerset producers who are working hard to produce the best product they can while also enhancing our landscape, protecting biodiversity, farming to high welfare standards, reducing food miles – and, of course, producing delicious food and drink.”

This first food trail mainly focuses on Mendip and surrounding areas, ranging from Wells, Wookey and Wedmore to Shepton Mallet, Bruton and the Brue Valley. However, if the event is as successful as the organisers anticipate, it will become an annual event, expanding to other parts of Somerset.

The festival will open with a ceremony at the Cathedral. It will include a short introduction from patron Charles Hazlewood and a joint performance of the March from Arthur Bliss’s orchestral suite Things to Come.

during the Cathedral service at 2.30pm, followed by a procession led by the Royal Artillery Band to The Bishop’s Palace, where there will be further picnic concerts on the lawns.

Events held by the festival include a free presentation of life as a military musician by the Royal Artillery Band, a free family-friendly string concert where ensembles from Germany and Malaysia will perform music suitable for all ages and a celebratory closing ceremony filled with film music.

Local ensembles – The Blue School String Orchestra and Priddy and St Lawrence School Choir – have been invited to perform alongside the international ensembles.

This will give local school children the opportunity to experience new cultures and make international friends, inspiring another generation of musicians.

Event in praise of community projects SOMERSET Skills & Learning (SS&L) hosted a celebration event in Wells to congratulate the community initiatives it has supported across Somerset in the past year.

The organisation, a leading adult education and community learning training provider, supports local community partners via funding and guidance to enable them to deliver their projects.

“We support a range of local organisations who deliver impactful and meaningful activities and training to the most vulnerable and marginalised in our society,” said SS&L chief executive Susie Simon-Norris.

“These projects range from Edventure that provide courses to help unemployed people to start up their own business or social enterprise to Heads Up who provide courses to help people recover

The public can help us to achieve this to reduce and to stop knives getting into the wrong hands.

The law says you cannot carry any weapons in a public place unless you have a reasonable excuse.

A weapon is defined as any object which is made, adapted or intended for causing injury; this means that if you have anything with you to hurt someone then you could be committing an offence.

Police have the power to search anyone in a public place who they reasonably believe

Police are urging people to dispose of knives in the knife surrender bin to have a weapon in their possession. Police also can go into schools and search pupils; if such weapon is found the weapon will be seized and you could be arrested if a weapon is found in your possession.

We aim to reduce the number of people carrying knives and to educate young people about the dangers of carrying knives.

We have a knife surrender

bin held at Wells Police Station where the public can surrender knives in a safe environment.

Every knife surrendered is one less knife out on the street where they can cause harm or even death.

We also want young people to know that if they are worried that someone they know is carrying a knife but are nervous about talking to the police,

they can contact Fearless, the Crimestoppers youth arm, anonymously and could potentially help save a life.

This can be done online at Fearless.org If a knife is found, or you want to dispose of it but you can’t make it to the station to use the surrender bin and you know it has not been used in a crime, and it has no evidence of blood, then you should wrap it up safely and dispose of it in your own bin, but we would rather you use the surrender bin held at the station. If you suspect a knife has been used in a crime, please call 101 and an officer will come to collect it from you.

Knives cause injury and death so I am encouraging the public to come to Wells Police Station and use the surrender bin: “Save a life, surrender your knife.”

THOUSANDS of pounds has been donated to The Somerset Poppies project that was publicised in last month’s Wells Voice. Dan Vidler, an artist and teacher at Coxley Primary School, is spearheading the project to commemorate everyone from Somerset, or who served in a Somerset regiment, who lost their life in the First World War. He plans to plant a field of poppies made by every schoolchild in Wells in front of The Bishop’s Palace in time for Remembrance Day, but needs to raise £13,500 to make it a reality.

Wells City Council has now

donated £2,000 towards the project, and Wells Civic Society is also contributing.

“We have raised over £3,500 so far, and our application to the Arts Council has been submitted,” said Dan. “The article has certainly increased awareness of the project in Wells. All 14 schools in Wells Community Learning Partnership have agreed that they will take part, as well as Wells Cathedral School, and there is now a website: www. somersetpoppies.co.uk”

TWO new performers have been confirmed for Music for the Mind, a charity concert being held in Wells to raise money for mental health charities in Somerset, Bristol and Bath.

Singer-songwriter Georgia Box will be one of the soloists at the concert, which takes place at Cedars Hall on September 15.

Georgia is a 22-year-old pop and R&B singer who gained a

large global audience by posting her music on social media.

Georgia will be backed at Music for the Mind by the Bath-based Vocal Works Gospel Choir, who will be performing throughout the concert. Hosting will be broadcaster Richard Wyatt.

Sculpture trail a very human celebration THE Bishop’s Palace in Wells will host a stunning new sculpture trail in the gardens surrounding the medieval buildings this autumn.

Curated by Gallery Pangolin – one of the few galleries specialising in sculpture in the country – the sculpture trail will be made up of ten striking pieces of art which will be located throughout the Palace’s inner gardens.

Human Nature will celebrate the qualities that characterise and define humankind.

The trail will comprise diverse sculptures from a disparate group of sculptors, including pieces by Lynn Chadwick, one of the giants of 20th century sculpture; Jon Buck, RWA and a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors; William Tucker, who was awarded the International Sculpture Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010; Ralph Brown, RA;

Among the sculptures on show will be some large and striking pieces of over two metres in height, and materials used include bronze and resin.

Freddie Langdon-Daly, public events co-ordinator at the Palace, said: “The exceptional gardens of The Bishop’s Palace are the perfect backdrop for this thoughtprovoking new sculpture trail. Gallery Pangolin have curated a wonderful exhibition, designed to enhance and reflect the beauty of this unique setting.”

The sculpture trail is designed to appeal to all ages, and separate printed trails for adults and children will be available to enhance the experience.

The exhibition will be open daily from September 15 to November 25, unless there is a

special event taking place, and is included in standard admission.

The sculpture trail will overlap with this year’s Wells Art Contemporary exhibition at The Bishop’s Palace from October 8-21.

There have been hundreds of entries for the competition, which has a top prize of £1,000 and an exhibition at the JM Gallery in London.

The closing date is Monday, July 2.

Following the exhibition in Wells, a smaller selected exhibition of paintings and sculpture will be presented at the Gainsborough Hotel in Bath.

In Wells at the same time as the exhibition at The Bishop’s Palace, there will be work on display by members of Somerset Guild of Craftsmen, inspired by and placed among items in the Wells and Mendip Museum collection.

Tea and cake to say thank you HEADS Up held a tea party to say thank you to its valuable volunteers during the nationwide Volunteers’ Week celebrations in June.

More than 20 people offer their time to help out at Heads Up with everything from kitchen duties to assisting during dementia group sessions and supporting gardening, pottery and woodworking tutors.

There was tea, cakes, trifle and fruit on offer during the afternoon tea party at the charity’s premises in South Horrington.

“The volunteers we’ve got are amazing,” said volunteer coordinator Amanda Loxton.

“Without our volunteers we wouldn’t be able to offer such a brilliant service.”

Rotary’s £1,000 will fund Disco Ball A GENEROUS gift will help fund a new project at a Wells charity.

“Sadly mental health is not a ‘sexy’ cause,” said Wells Rotary president Richard Cussell before presenting the money to Heads Up. Vanessa Gordon accepted the £1,000 cheque on behalf of the South Horrington-based mental health charity and said the money would be used to buy equipment for the new Disco Ball initiative at Heads Up.

Vanessa explained how music provided great therapy and pleasure for people living with dementia and other mental health issues.

But tastes differ and there are people in their 40s with dementia now who might love the alternative rock of Nirvana while an 80-year-old prefers the gentler tones of Vera Lynn.

So in the Disco Ball at Heads Up everyone will wear headphones playing their own favourites.

n NEWS Comedy acts a big attraction THIS year’s Wells Comedy Festival saw an increase in audience numbers of nearly 2,000 compared to the 2017 event.

There were 66 shows in six venues at the fourth annual event for which 6,725 tickets were sold, compared to 4,853 last year.

“This year’s Wells Comedy Festival was a huge success, the biggest and best yet,” said festival director Ben Williams.

“The feedback we’ve received from audiences and acts has been overwhelming positive. A huge thanks to everyone who made it possible – performers, staff, volunteers, venues, partners – we couldn’t have done it without you.”

Toilets A special mention for the Town Hall staff and contractors who look after the public toilets here and at the bus station. Someone was called out to the bus station early on a Sunday morning because the toilet lock was jammed; he fixed the lock and then cleaned out all the cubicles.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS WI MEMBERS have been busy in recent weeks. The book club is up and running, and lots of paperbacks were swapped at the meeting. The new gourmet group got off to a great start, with six members each making a course for an Asian-themed feast.

Others enjoyed serving tea and cakes on the WI stall at the Bath and West show. Two committee members attended the annual national WI meeting in Cardiff, where the resolution to campaign next year about mental health being as important as physical health was approved almost unanimously.

Future plans include going to see two productions at the Wells Theatre Festival; a skittles social at the Britannia; volunteering at the Taunton Flower Show; and competing in the first round of the county quiz in the hope we may reach the final again. The intrepid walkers will be attempting the evening walk previously rained off. The

Wells Culture Club members decided to spend a day at the seaside with a visit to Weston-super-Mare. They were impressed with the museum, which has recently had a lottery grant to renew and redo its exhibits to a high standard; ventured on to the pier whose amusements, apart from the penny falls, were much changed from childhood memories; enjoyed a lunch of fish and chips; and purchased various flavours of sticks of rock, including cider and gin and tonic. Members were encouraged to support the pop up teas in the cloisters at Wells Cathedral, and the open days at Wells Almshouses on June 16 and July 21.

Our speaker was Rupert Farthing, CEO of Carymoor Environmental Trust, who gave us an overview of this conservation charity’s amazing

achievements at a Castle Cary waste facility, where a functioning rubbish dump has been turned into a model of recycling and sustainable living, generating enough energy to power 1,200 homes a year.

Carymoor’s primary function is conservation education, and the wildlife habitats managed by volunteers are home to a huge range of flowers, birds, bugs and animals, including some endangered species. What we will really take away from Rupert’s talk, though, was the shocking truth about the real cost of our modern consumer lifestyles. In Somerset we throw away a tonne of rubbish every two minutes, 47 per cent of which goes to landfill.

We don’t think about what happens to what we put in our bins but, to give one example, we bin eight million disposable nappies every day in the UK. It is estimated that they will not break down for 500 years. We were even more disgusted to hear that a third of the food bought in the UK is thrown away: every single day we bin 4.4 million apples; 1.4 million bananas; 5.8 million potatoes; and 2.6 million tomatoes.

Park and ride scheme long overdue I WOULD like to endorse every word said by Margaret Hollis last month on parking (or lack of it) in Wells. We mostly live by tourists and yet the residents are being charged ever increasing tourist rates to park. As a resident of Priest Row, I know the problem only too well. Tor Street, Silver Street and Southover have become my stalking places in which to park, usually when everyone else has gone home.

Some years ago, a questionnaire came round asking us to visit Seager Hall to view and comment on various proposals, one of which was parking. I replied, suggesting a park and ride scheme based on the field adjacent the Glastonbury Road and Jocelyn Drive. Five acres I thought

should be enough, plus toilets (the sewerage plant is just next door), including maybe a chance for someone to run a small cafe and information place.

But as usual, not a dicky bird.

So what does it take – gridlock as coaches unload in Sadler Street, or are we at the bottom end of Beggars Lane – sorry, Chamberlain Street – just being left to rot whilst the good and the great take up most of the ground at the east end of Wells (good title for a soap perhaps?) ie. the golf club which in my humble opinion would lend itself to an excellent place for a park and ride scheme, not to mention providing transport for all those living at the old Mendip Hospital site, including the Bath Road.

n NEWS Shops focus of photo project

Who can help print portraits?

A REMEMBRANCE project has been launched to collect photos of shops and other premises in Wells as they were during the First World War. Pictures of people associated with those buildings who were involved in the war would also be welcome.

The pictures will be put on display in the shop windows in November to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the war.

This project is being led

by Mayor of Wells Councillor Celia Wride and Wells City Archivist Dr Julia Wood, who are appealing for people who have such photos from the war years, 1914-18, to submit them for the project.

WELLS and Mendip Museum has a wonderful, unique and historic collection of Victorian studio portraits by Bert Phillips who had a shop in the Market Place. Originally on glass plates, these have been carefully restored and digitised so are now accessible.

As a trustee of the museum I am aiming to stage an exhibition to show these pictures of the ordinary men and women of Victorian Wells as many will be the predecessors of current residents and to research the backgrounds and learn more about the people represented.

There are over 200 of these pictures and having put them on to a USB stick, I am looking for a local sponsor to help me print them out on a good quality photocopier ready for their display in October.

It’s a small world and getting smaller WE now live in an age of constant news, instant communication and fast and easy travel – well, usually.

I’m writing this the day after the Millfield Polo Tournament at which I was one of the sponsors.

As you would expect, it was highly organised, very relaxed and several thousand spectators basked in the sunshine enjoying the sport while trying to follow the commentator. He had flown in that day from Florida solely for the event. Although an old boy and player, he did seem to have trouble keeping track of the score.

We had a stand in the main marquee on the halfway line and

during the day met lots of friends and a remarkable number of people now planning on buying in the area and moving here from all over the world.

This ranged from new families with children moving to the school, existing parents wanting to be nearer, and a large number of couples retiring back to Somerset. Lots were from the Middle East, mainly Saudi Arabia, but also the USA (not the commentator), Russia, Australia, Nigeria and Haiti.

I found the huge variety of property types under consideration to be fascinating.

manageable gardens. Some wanted perfection immediately – and I mean perfection – while others wanted a blank canvas on which to put their own mark. Prices varied too. The higher priced houses always gain interest but the most popular range was £500,000 to £750,000 – I thought one chap was going to write out a cheque for £800,000 on the spot. Sadly he didn’t but he told me he would be back later in the week. Time will tell.

Palace tea party

MORE than 20 bags of rubbish were collected in the latest litter pick around Wells organised by mayor Councillor Celia Wride.

A meeting of the participating volunteers in the Mayor’s Parlour on June 29 will discuss the clean up operation, and the possibility of making it a quarterly event.

A TEA party was held in the Undercroft at The Bishop’s Place in June to celebrate all the hard work done by volunteers in Wells. The Bishop’s Palace alone has 240 volunteers, and 60 different organisations were invited to the event.

Gurkha curry lunch A THREE-COURSE curry lunch cooked by a former Army Catering Corps member is on offer at Wells Reclamation Yard, Coxley, on Saturday, July 14, in a fundraiser for The Gurkha Welfare Trust.

Participants will also be able to chat to Gurkha soldiers, hear a talk about Gurkhas from Brigadier Bruce Jackman OBE MC, and explore the yard.

Darts still as popular as ever

Free coaching at tennis club

MORE than 20 teams are battling it out for honours on Tuesday nights in the Wells & District Darts League’s Summer League.

The Wells & District Darts League started more than 70 years ago and has been going strong ever since.

“We added a Summer League due to the fact that people were wanting it. The Summer League started in 1975,” said fixtures and results secretary Tom Gould.

Teams come from a radius of 10 miles from Wells, and span an area from Cheddar to Chewton Mendip, and Wookey Hole to Shepton Mallet.

The league’s base is The Venue in South Street, which is home to three teams – The Venue, Up and Downers and Top Cats – has six dartboards and is where the finals nights are held.

“The Venue is the home of Wells darts,” said league president Dave Carey, who has been playing darts for 61 years and been on the committee for 53 years.

Fellow committee member Pete Bridge has been playing for 62 years.

“A lot of it’s to do with the camaraderie,” said Dave, a

Aimed at encouraging more people to take up the sport for fitness or competition, the Great British Tennis Weekend is coordinated by the Lawn Tennis Association across the country.

From 9.30am until 2.30pm the Wells club will be hosting drop-in free children’s and adults coaching with LTA Somerset Coach of the Year, Kevin Durney. Courts will be available for anyone to practice for free throughout the morning. n 9.30am-10.30am: Junior coaching for eight-year-olds and younger. n 10.30am-11.30am: Junior coaching for eight- to ten-yearolds. n 11.30am-1pm: Junior tennis for 11-year-olds and older. n 1pm-2pm: Adult coaching.

“A lot of us have been together 20 years now. Darts is still very popular, it’s still holding its own against other sports, and ours is a very well run darts league.”

Making right moves in dressage world DRESSAGE rider Shelly Smit would love to compete for the British team one day if she continues her rise up the rankings.

She has been riding for more than 30 years, since she was two, and rides now six days a week.

She was a horseback safari guide for 12 years in South Africa, where she met her husband and discovered her horse, Sharp Sharp – which in South Africa is another way of saying “everything is OK”. Shelly was drawn to Sharp Sharp’s movement and his quirkiness. “He had the bloodlines I was looking for and I thought he would make a very good dressage horse. He’s also one of the most difficult horses I’ve had to train.”

Nevertheless the pair have achieved a chemistry together that has seen them go from the unaffiliated walk-trot, the lowest level of dressage, to qualifying for the elementary and medium levels for this year’s Area Festival.
