CAMPAIGNERS say that there has been significant progress in efforts to make Wells more accessible for people with disabilities.

The first Task & Finish group meeting between members of the Accessible Wells campaign group, Somerset Council and Wells City Council took place on December 12 in Wells Town Hall. As a result, a plan of action is now going to be drawn up to rectify some of the deficiencies highlighted in the 2023 Proper Pavements for Wells survey and subsequent surveys.

Big clear-up operation after storm hits Throughout Saturday, Sunday and Monday, six chainsaw gangs were busy removing hundreds of trees which had been blown across roads.

Power cables also fell across many roads – by Saturday afternoon more than 13,000 households in Somerset were without power.

Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: “We’re incredibly grateful for the efforts of our contractor Kier in working round the clock to keep the county moving – these were really challenging conditions, a Red Weather warning is the most extreme alert.

“Thankfully many appear to have heeded the warnings and stayed at home during the height of the storm and we also saw communities coming together to help the most vulnerable and affected.”

Local residents had received a Government ‘severe alert’ wind warning on their mobile phones before the storm struck, advising them to stay indoors if possible and consider gathering torches, batteries and other essential items.

SOMERSET Council’s highways crews worked round the clock to clear roads after hundreds of trees and more than 20 power cables were downed during the county’s second storm event in two weeks.

Teams from the council’s contractor Kier were out in winds of nearly 90mph during a rare Met Office Red Warning, combined with Amber and Yellow Warnings across the weekend of December 7 and 8 as Storm Darragh swept through the county from the early hours of Saturday into Sunday.

A Red Warning is the highest level of alert and means there is possible danger to life and wind speeds reached 89mph in Exmoor and 72mph in Yeovil.

Teams dealt with nearly 700 reports of incidents on the road and more than 400 fallen trees during and after Storm Darragh, which hit just two weeks after Storm Bert.

First of 2025 comedy festival stars revealed SARA Pascoe is one of the first big-name stars to be announced for the 2025 Wells Comedy Festival.

Others who will be appearing when the festival returns for its ninth year include Amy Gledhill, Jessica Fostekew and Kemah Bob. Dozens of the country’s top names in comedy will descend on England’s smallest city for a big bank holiday weekend of comedy from May 23-25.

The first shows announced for 2025 include Sara Pascoe (Taskmaster, Live at the Apollo, The Great British Sewing Bee) who will be making a return to the festival with her new show I Am A Strange Gloop.

Festival favourite Rhys James (Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo, Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central) also returns as well as Jonathan Ross’ Comedy Club and Guessable star Kemah Bob, and star of The Stand-Up Sketch

In addition, both of the 2024 Edinburgh Comedy Award winners – Best Comedy Show winner Amy Gledhill (Live at

the Apollo, The Jonathan Ross Show, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown) and Best Newcomer winner Joe Kent-Walters – are each bringing their awardwinning shows to Wells.

As well as solo shows, the festival’s four gala performances are now on sale, each featuring a surprise line-up of comics from across the festival.

Cards spread some festive cheer ALMOST 400 Christmas cards made by pupils and staff at Wells Cathedral School have been distributed to residents of care homes in the city.

And there were enough left over for people supported by mental health charity Heads Up, the Lawrence Centre which provides day opportunities for older people, including those living with health issues and memory loss, and the Connect Centre which helps the homeless.

“Pupils and staff have enjoyed making and writing Christmas cards which we hope will spread

a little festive cheer for the residents of our local care homes as well as for any others in the Wells area who may find this time of year especially challenging,” said Cathedral School headmaster Alastair Tighe. “The celebration of Christmas encourages all of us to think about others, in a particular way, and we hope that these cards from Wells Cathedral School are one way of doing just that.”

The cards were collected from the school by Philip Welch on behalf of Wells Dementia Action Alliance.

The mental health and wellbeing charity based at South Horrington, Wells, has been shortlisted in the Charity of the Year category in the awards run by Somerset Chamber of Commerce. The finalists in the 14 different categories will be announced in February, and the Grand Final will take place in Weston-super-Mare in March.

by St Cuthbert’s Church this year as the chapel is still being renovated. It was enhanced by the singing of the local choir, which included two ex-Trustees.

Christmas trees charity initiative WELLS Rotary will be collecting and recycling Christmas trees for charity in the BA5 postal area on Saturday, January 11.

The initiative is a fundraiser for St Margaret’s Hospice Care.

To book a collection and make a donation, go to www.justhelping.org.uk/register-tree, and Rotary will collect the tree from the front of the house and take it for shredding and recycling.

Registration closes on January 7.

Nearly £2,000 was raised for the charity from collections last year.

Donations up at 2024 carnival THE total donations at the Wells City Carnival on November 15 came to £17,420.35 – a significant increase on the previous year’s total which was close to the ten-year average of £11,500.

More donations came in after

the carnival to bring the grand total for 2024 to £17,803.72.

Two views of the initial design that Maverick have come up with for a new Wells Skatepark

Dozens at meeting to get first look at new skatepark designs INITIAL designs for a new skatepark in Wells were unveiled to an audience of wheeled sports enthusiasts in November.

Russ Holbert and Ian Jennings from the Maverick Skateparks design and installation specialists displayed the design images at a meeting in Wells Town Hall attended by nearly 50 people.

They said that the Wells site, near Waitrose, is one of the hardest they have ever had to deal with because of its topography and the considerable fall along the site.

They had allowed for that and taken into consideration feedback from past consultations to come up with a design for a concrete skatepark incorporating a number of features that fills about two-thirds of the existing space.

Ian said that trying to remove the existing tarmac would be a huge expense and that the most economical approach was to work within the existing landscape. The design they have come up with follows the topography enough so that the riding surfaces can integrate.

He said that the first concept was longer and thinner but was not really working out.

Russ said that it is a huge space, and that a bit of blending around the edges of the proposed new skatepark was

The next steps are to submit a planning application, and then focus on the £500,000 in fundraising required. Ian said that – assuming all goes well with those – it would probably be summer 2026 before work would begin on the site, and that it might take 16 to 20 weeks to complete the work.

They were heartened by the number of people who attended the meeting. “It’s very encouraging for us to see such a good turnout,” said Russ.

Theo van Hensbergen told the meeting that there are moral and legal imperatives for making improvements, and said: “As able-bodied people we often simply cannot see, or we step over, the problems that face disabled people.

“We are jointly determined to work together to make improvements and we have an opportunity to make Wells an exemplar of how to successfully tackle inclusivity.”

Discussions covered a wide range of issues including missing drop kerbs, broken pavements and trip hazards, A-frame advertising boards and cafe street furniture, and disabled parking.

Following the meeting, Dick Hodgson, who has to use a wheelchair to get around Wells, led the Somerset Council delegates on a tour of the city to highlight some of the worst barriers to accessibility.

He said: “I was very pleased with the way the day went and I am now much more hopeful things will improve. Getting around Wells easily is a reality of life for able-bodied people and until my wheelchair arrived I had never really considered it.

It is only when you take a ride in my chair you start to see how difficult my lived in experience is – and so much of it can easily be fixed.”

The Mosaic featured on the front page of Wells Voice in May 2018 when we first reported on the project, top; and the December 2024 front page

WELLS Voice has charted the progress of the Wells in Mosaic since our front-page story about it in May 2018. Some of the pictures we have published along the way can be seen on the right.

Last month we revealed that artist Ruth Ames-White has now laid the last of approximately 750,000 tiles to complete the amazing artwork.

The sections of the Mosaic, when put together, will create a six-metre diameter circle in the form of a walkable map of the historic centre of Wells, along with many artistic and informative features. The location for the Mosaic now has to be finalised before it is installed, and further funding will be required for the installation.

Palace to launch new audio visual guides AFTER months of research, audience consultation and content creation The Bishop’s Palace in Wells will soon be sharing the stories of the medieval Palace building and its people with visitors via new multi-media audio visual guides.

The tours, due to be launched in January, are designed to provide 45 minutes of rich content, with the choice of an adult version or one tailored for a more family audience, including quizzes, treasure hunts and fun games. Optional extras will also be available for those who want more detail.

Volunteers will be on hand to explain how to use the guides (pictured above) at the entrance to the Palace building where the guides can be picked up. The tours will then guide visitors to a seated area to watch a welcome

From here a one-way route will take visitors around the Palace buildings through five narrative themes using stories, music, imagery, quizzes and more to bring the stories of the Palace and its people to life in an interactive and engaging way.

The project has been developed in consultation with Imagineear, who are responsible for the same devices at Warner Bros Harry Potter Studio Tour, Wimbledon, Wembley Stadium and the Natural History Museum amongst many other prestigious attractions.

Merryn Kidd, CEO of The Bishop’s Palace, said: “We’re delighted to make the guides

available to our visitors, without an additional charge, as part of our commitment to developing Palace interpretation.

“In 2025 our investment in bringing the stories of the Palace alive will continue with the development of our living history room – Bishop Wynne Wilson’s Study on the first floor of the Palace building – by adding bespoke tabletop games and an exploratory armoire with objects to engage visitors in a more physical discovery of this period.

More plans are also in progress to develop an immersive visitor experience in the Palace’s Conference Room.”

Ladies get together for one final time

By Emma James MEMBERS of the West Horrington Ladies Circle have met for the last time over lunch at Blossom’s of Wells. An opportunity to share many happy memories, it was also tinged with sadness as the Circle marks the end of its long history.

The Ladies Circle was started in 1968 by Miss Bazeley and Miss Baker of Yew Tree House.

Sally Ball, a founder member, remembers Miss Bazeley as a very special person: “She was a retired welfare officer and had also been a governess before the war with connections to the Royal Family. She wanted to set up a friendship circle for young mothers. In those days, we didn’t have cars. It was difficult to go out in the evenings and the days were spent at home with the children. Miss Bazeley called a meeting. She was very insistent that the group be independent, non-religious and non-political.

In the beginning there were 15 members.”

The Ladies Circle met regularly on the last Tuesday of every month. Meetings were not informal: a chairperson and treasurer and other officers were appointed with minutes taken and subs collected. All women in the village were included and welcome to attend any or all of the meetings. The January AGM was a forum for suggesting ideas for the programme of events for the forthcoming year. Because West Horrington lacks a village hall, meetings were held in different village houses –

‘If there was any special occasion we always organised a party. We commemorated everything!’ friendships were formed and friendships endured. As Sally puts it: “We shared each other’s joys and we shared each other’s sorrows.”

The Ladies Circle filled each year with an extraordinary variety of events and activities: outings to National Trust gardens; quiz and film nights; talks from visiting speakers; picnics at Deer Leap; the annual trip to the pantomime; Beetle Drives; afternoon tea with the Mayor; treasure hunts; chocolate

making; a horse-drawn canal boat trip. “And if there was any special occasion,” explains Sally, “we always organised a party. We put an invitation though everyone’s door. We commemorated everything! They were lovely parties.”

Christmas has always been an important time for the Ladies Circle which has organised the village Christmas tree as well as carol singing when money raised was donated to a chosen charity. Members would gather in Sally’s kitchen for mince pies and to repair the tree decorations together.

been uncovered and a successful campaign was mounted to reopen the footpath connecting South to West Horrington.

Current Chairperson Jo Greenslade moved to the village in 2016. She recalls the impact that the Ladies Circle made on her: “On my first day, the log fairy came! Someone put logs outside my door to welcome me. I was invited to join the Ladies Circle and that gave me an immediate social life. I feel sad now because it’s been such a marvellous thing, but time moves on and mothers now will do things differently.”

However, the happy faces and chatter around the table at Blossom’s were proof that this group’s main aim of achieving fellowship has certainly been achieved.

exhibition Venue presented with award Art set for October

A WELLS events and accommodation venue is celebrating after being presented with an Excellence Award by the Bath & Bristol Branch of The International Wine & Food Society (IWFS).

Tim and Frances Young, the owners of Stoberry House at Stoberry Park, received the award in December in recognition of the “outstanding hospitality” they provided “and the meals enjoyed by our members on several occasions during 2022-24 which have been exceptional in both quality and presentation”.

The citation continues: “Service has in every instance been exemplary and the beautiful parkland setting of the House, artistically planted gardens and wonderful views have only

Tim and Frances have been given a framed certificate and a window sticker to publicise the award, valid until December 31,

2026, when it may be renewed at the Branch’s discretion.

“We were very honoured to receive this award,” said Frances.

“These things come completely out of the blue.”

Stoberry House has won a string of awards over the years, as well as hosting numerous celebrities, and the gardens have become a popular visitor attraction.

The IWFS brings together people who enjoy food and wine, and “helps travelling members find the best of wine and food wherever they go”. Activities include banquets, wine-tastings and trips around the world.

THE Wells Art Contemporary exhibition will be held later in the year in 2025, taking place in October rather than August.

It will again be hosted by Wells Cathedral, and there will be a theme for the 2025 Installations show, which will be Flowing Light.

Chris Winter – the Chair of Wells Civic Society – will be Chief Steward for the WAC 2025 exhibition. She said: “I really enjoy being a steward for WAC; I’ve had some fascinating conversations with people from literally all over the world as well as people from just down the road, and people locally who have never been in the Cathedral.

It’s particularly nice to engage with the children. I love the fact that every year there’s something that the children can touch and get involved with.”

Housing plans turned down SOMERSET Council has rejected an outline planning application for 47 new homes on the B3139 Elm Close, near the junction with Gypsy Lane.

helps Students ask panellists to give Concert Mayor’s cause views on wide range of topics STUDENTS from The Blue School and Wells Cathedral School prompted a lively 90-minute debate in a Youth Question Time event at Wells Town Hall in November.

The teenagers posed questions to a panel consisting of MP Tessa Munt, county councillor Theo Butt Philip and city councillor Louis Agabani, the Deputy Mayor of Wells.

Topics ranged from inheritance tax and assisted dying to defence spending and social media.

The debate was chaired by Wells Mayor Jasmine Browne, who organised it as part of UK Parliament Week and to get more young people engaged in politics.

Also in attendance were city councillors Stewart Cursley, Philip Welch, Deborah Orrett and Denise Denis.

In response to a question asking panellists for their views on VAT on private schools, “given that Wells Cathedral School is such an asset to the economy of Wells”, Ms Munt and Cllr Agabani both felt that this was not a good idea, and wondered whether state schools had the capacity to take extra pupils if required.

One student asked for views on the viability of a train link being reinstated in Wells, with the economic and environmental benefits that could bring. Cllr Butt Philip said he did not think it was going to be on the agenda

Ms Munt was asked what the biggest challenge has been so far since she has been MP. She said that the first challenge was winning, and then the biggest challenge has been not having money to get things done.

“I’d encourage you to get involved in politics,” she told the students at that point. “I’d love for Wells City Council to have a Youth Council so you can flex a bit of muscle about what happens in the city.”

Should the voting age be lowered to 16?, asked a student.

Cllr Agabani and Ms Munt both said they would be in favour of such a move.

There were questions about the definition of a working person, whether Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States might impact us in the UK, about CO2 emissions and climate change, and about the cutting of the winter fuel allowance for pensioners.

In another question directed specifically at the MP, Ms Munt was asked what her key priorities are for the constituency in the coming year.

She said sorting out the cost-of-living crisis and helping people understand what help is available to them; stopping Wessex Water dumping sewage in rivers; and making sure people have the support they need around health issues, and can get doctor’s and dentist’s appointments.

THE Mayor’s Charity Concert in Wells Town Hall on November 23 raised nearly £3,000 towards the refurbishment of the Wells Scout Hut. Wells Mayor Councillor Jasmine Browne has made fundraising for improving the 40-year-old Scout Hut her charity for her year in office.

The concert featured live music from Tim Pitman whose repertoire ranged from Roy Orbison to Andrea Bocelli, and Brooke Neal who treated the 120-strong audience to Madonna, Abba and Ella Fitzgerald classics. There was also a bar, auction and raffle. The event raised a total of £2,738.

“Thank you to all those who gave up their free time to volunteer to help at the concert, those who donated raffle prizes and the organisers for all their hard work,” said Cllr Browne.

Lanterns taking animals theme THE fifth Wells Lantern Parade, themed Carnival of Animals, will take place on Saturday, January 18. The parade will start at 6.30pm inside Wells Cathedral and will be led by Bristol’s Ambling Band. Refreshments will be available in the Market Place after the parade.

Walking group members at a recent group lunch

Fancy some fresh air, exercise and the chance to socialise?

Organisers of a Wells walking group say there will be a warm welcome for anyone who would like to join them NOW that Christmas is over all but the shouting it may be time to think about some fresh air.

Exercise may not be a term you like or associate with walking but this may be just what you want.

This one is as much about the social side as the walk with the bonus of seeing different sites and parts of Wells on a comparatively leisurely walk for usually under an hour with the all-important talking as you go.

Our walks are usually reasonably flat and on firm ground so wellies or heavy duty hiking boots are not usually required.

It is an entirely voluntary group with no ties, no fees / charge (it’s free), no commitment and no registration; the only requirement is you walk entirely

at your own risk – much like walking anywhere. Just turn up as and when you want and feel like it. There are no restrictions on age, capability etc; it’s down to you.

At present there are about 20 of us with roughly ten walking every week who come from the surrounding area; Wells, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Wedmore and even Taunton areas occasionally, in whatever the weather chooses for us. Some of us even stop after and retire to a cafe for a drink; occasionally we might go for a bite to eat somewhere afterwards (preplanned).

If this appeals to you and wish to join us just turn up outside the closed entrance to Morrisons at 11am any Tuesday; we only stop for the Christmas period. The first walk after Christmas will be on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

Gruesome story behind Bronze Age bones ARCHAEOLOGISTS have analysed more than 3,000 human bones and bone fragments from the Early Bronze Age site of Charterhouse Warren, on the Mendip Hills, concluding that the people were massacred, butchered, and likely partly consumed by enemies as a means to dehumanise them.

The bones are part of the collections at Wells & Mendip Museum, and were made available for scientific analysis.

There have been hundreds of human skeletons found in Britain dating between c.25001500 cal. BC, but direct evidence for violent conflict is rare.

“We actually find more evidence for injuries to skeletons dating to the Neolithic period in Britain than the Early Bronze Age, so Charterhouse Warren stands out as something very unusual,” said lead author of the research, Professor Rick Schulting from the University of Oxford. “It paints a considerably darker picture of the period than many would have expected.”

In the 1970s, the scattered bones of at least 37 individuals were discovered in a 15m-deep shaft at Charterhouse Warren.

They were a mix of men, women, and children.

Unlike most contemporary burials, the skulls display evidence of violent death from blunt force trauma. To uncover the mystery of what happened to these people, researchers from several European institutions analysed the bones. Their results are published in the journal Antiquity.

The researchers found numerous cutmarks and perimortem fractures (made around the time of death) on the bones, suggesting that they were intentionally butchered and may have been partly consumed, begging the question: why would people in Early Bronze Age Britain cannibalise the dead?

At the nearby Palaeolithic site of Gough’s Cave in Cheddar Gorge, cannibalism was likely a form of funerary ritual. Charterhouse Warren is different, say the research team.

Evidence for violent death, with no indication of a fight, implies the victims were taken by surprise; it is probable they were all massacred, and the butchery was carried out by their enemies.

The possibility that they were killed for food is said to be unlikely as there were abundant cattle bones found mixed in with the human ones, suggesting the people at Charterhouse Warren had plenty to eat without needing to resort to cannibalism.

Instead, cannibalism may have been a way to ‘other’ the deceased. By eating their flesh and mixing the bones in with faunal remains, the killers were likening their enemies to animals, thereby dehumanising them.

It is suggested that the conflict was more likely to have been caused by social factors – perhaps theft or insults led to tensions, which escalated out of proportion – rather than resource competition and climate change, or ethnic conflict. Evidence for infection

with plague in the teeth of two children indicates disease may have also exacerbated tensions.

“The finding of evidence of the plague by colleagues from the Crick Institute was completely unexpected,” said Professor Schulting.

“We’re still unsure whether, and if so how, this is related to the violence at the site.”

He added: “Charterhouse Warren is one of those rare archaeological sites that challenges the way we think about the past. It is a stark reminder that people in prehistory could match more recent atrocities and shines a light on a dark side of human behaviour.

“That it is unlikely to have been a one-off event makes it even more important that its story is told.”

The human bones are all currently in Oxford, and Wells & Mendip Museum is hoping to put some of them on display when they are eventually returned to Wells.

There already is a small display on the Charterhouse Warren farm site in the Museum’s Balch Room.

David Walker, Wells & Mendip Museum’s Honorary Curator, said: “The human and animal remains are an extraordinary assemblage.

“We will never know what happened all those years ago, but the scientists using new techniques like Archaic DNA analysis can tell us a lot about these individuals and their society.”

Christmas Market as popular as ever after change of location WELLS celebrated the festive season on Saturday, December 14, with its popular annual Christmas Market, with a little help from the city’s Cathedral.

Hundreds of shoppers flocked to the market, making the most of the stalls that offered a wide range of food, drink, and unique gifts.

Usually held on the Bishop’s Palace Green, Somerset Council’s Mendip Markets team made the decision to relocate the event due to the risk posed by a large, old tree which has been made unsafe by the recent storms.

The St John Ambulance Annual Presentation Awards and Carol Service

St John Ambulance presentations ST John Ambulance held its Annual Presentation Awards and Carol Service in Wells Town Hall on Wednesday, December 4.

Guests included the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Justin Sargent OBE DL, and the Mayor of Wells, Councillor Jasmine Browne.

Certificates were presented to Badgers (ages 5-10) for achievement of their Badges and to Cadets (ages 11-17) for their Grand Prior Awards.

Adults were presented with Long Service Awards. This was the first formal meeting of the new St John Ambulance Mendip Network which was formed in the summer. The Network brings together units from Yeovil, Frome, Street and Glastonbury and Wells.

St John Ambulance is looking to increase the number of Adult First Aiders and Youth Leaders.

They say: “Over the last three years dance has brought us together to keep active, have fun, and support each other.” n Wells Youth Club: “We encourage young people to be good neighbours and active members of their community.

Keen interest in talks about Gaza and the West Bank SEVENTY-FIVE people attended talks on November 20 at a meeting in Wells Museum exploring ‘What’s happening in Gaza and the West Bank?’, organised by Mid-Somerset Oxfam Group and Amnesty International. Ruth James, Oxfam International’s Regional Humanitarian Co-ordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, told the packed hall what is happening on the ground in Gaza. She is responsible for the charity’s aid programme there and has visited twice since the Gaza war began.

water, food, tents, medical care, and being shelled in areas they had been told were ‘safe’. Over 20,000 children now have no surviving family member. Some are clambering precariously up bombed buildings to retrieve building materials, which they sell to buy food.

Then Dr Sue Jones, former Wells city councillor, spoke about human rights in the West Bank. From April to July she lived there, as a human rights observer with the World Council of Churches’ Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme to Palestine and Israel (EAPPI).

She spoke about the many ways international law is being violated under the Occupation – focusing on a Bedouin community as an example of the wider picture.

At the meeting, Oxfam’s Katie Edmondson praised the Mid Somerset Oxfam Group as one of the most active in the South West, raising more than £7,000 in the past year from events such as pub quizzes, a New Year’s Eve ceilidh and the One World Fair.

Museum and Rotary team up for postcard art fundraiser A CALL has gone out to artists to donate up to three postcardsized pieces of artwork for an exhibition and fundraising event in February.

It is being organised by Wells & Mendip Museum, which needs funds to continue to develop its exhibition spaces and maintain its building and collections, with the support of the Rotary Club of Wells.

The postcards will be

displayed in the Museum’s Lecture Hall on Friday, February 21, and Saturday, February 22, 2025, from 10am-6pm. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to submit confidential bids for individual pieces at a reserve price of £20 or above.

Warmer winter for winners of heating oil TINCKNELL Fuels will be ensuring three older people stay warm this winter after giving them each 500 litres of heating oil. The trio were all winners in the company’s ‘Winter Fuel Giveaway’ competition. The fuel will be delivered to them by the Wells, Avonmouth and Gillingham depots.

Tincknells was initially established in Wells in 1925, and the company says it has always believed in giving back to the people who have supported them for nearly 100 years, hence the giveaway – to help those facing challenges this winter, particularly in light of the recent winter fuel payment cuts.

Nominations were invited online, allowing people to enter themselves, a loved one, or even a charity.

“The response was overwhelming, with hundreds of heartfelt stories pouring in,” said Tincknells’ Marketing Manager

One of the winners is a 97-year-old man who missed out on the Government’s winter fuel payment by a few pounds, and was nominated by his daughter.

Another winner is a 75-yearold woman who was nominated

by her husband of 30 years. A Tincknells customer for more than 25 years, she takes great pride in carefully managing their oil usage.

The third winner is a man who has recently been widowed after caring for his wife and is finding life financially hard on one pension. He was nominated by his daughter.

“We hope we have managed to make a difference to a few of the local community who were in need this winter and wish to congratulate all the winners, and are honoured to provide them with the warmth and security they deserve this winter,” said Joanne.

“The staff at Tincknell Fuels were so blown away by the responses we received that we are already looking at repeating the fuel giveaway next winter.

n NEWS Bigham’s unveils solar farm plans the Kitchen’s energy use, while reducing CO2 emissions. The company says some solar panels will be also supplied to the neighbouring Wells (Dulcote) Recycling Centre, from where the site would be accessed by road, as a stand-alone system.

The proposals state that a total of 232 trees would be removed from the site, but they “will be replaced in accordance with the Net Gain Management Plan to mitigate any adverse effects on wildlife and the natural environment”.

Fresh start on work to build flats A NEW contractor has been appointed to restart construction at the Vicarage Fields site on Glastonbury Road, Wells. After a successful tender, Winsley White Building Contractors and Developers Ltd have been appointed by housing association The Guinness Partnership.

Work on site to build the 22 homes started again in December. They will comprise a mix of one- and two-bedroom flats, which will all be for social rent. The scheme, which is on the site of a former factory, will also include car parking spaces and a secure bike store for residents.

The Guinness Partnership is one of several strategic partners with Homes England who are being provided with grant funding, to help enable the development of new homes.

A SOLAR farm could be built next to the Charlie Bigham’s Quarry Kitchen at Dulcote to help provide energy for the food production centre.

The company has submitted a planning application to Somerset Council for a 2.2 megawatt (MW) Ground Mounted Solar Array and associated infrastructure on a former landfill site east of the Quarry Kitchen.

For the Wells Neighbourhood Team it has been a busy December however it is fantastic to see so many of you supporting the local High Street.

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many local people at ‘Christmas in Wells Market’ where there were many stalls selling gifts, lots of live music and entertainment.

What a fantastic community event.

If you are anything like me you may have eaten a few too many mince pies recently? The New Year obviously bring us resolutions, many of us have an appetite for fitness once more!

Even on Christmas Day I know I will witness walkers, runners and cyclists of all ages exploring our wonderful city.

The party season is coming to an end but if you still have events lined up where you intend to drink alcohol then please make a plan on how you are going to get home. Wells has some good longstanding trusted taxi companies who work well into the night and late buses which are cheap and easy to use.

As I write this article today I have just finished assisting my colleague with someone in the local villages who was driving while two times over the alcohol limit. There are absolutely no excuses for drink-driving, this person in question was arrested and their vehicle has been seized.

Drink- and drug-driving enforcement is a year-round priority for us, but the festive season sees an increase in risk, with more people taking chances behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs.

During December and January, proactive enforcement efforts will be ramped up with roadside checks conducted day and night.

Community intelligence plays a pivotal role. Reports from the public help us identify habitual offenders.

The Wells Neighbourhood Team have been working closely with licensed premises across the Wells area to spread the message about the dangers of drink- and drug-driving. Pubs, bars and clubs are being encouraged to display Crimestoppers posters to warn against driving under the influence and remind customers they can report suspected offenders anonymously.

This collaboration is key to reaching people before they make the potentially lifechanging decision to get behind the wheel after drinking or taking drugs.

Theatre festival auditions and workshops THE Wells Theatre Festival will be back next summer (June 1922, 2025), with the organisers promising another programme of inspirational performing arts.

Following on from their sellout production of Macbeth in the Bishop’s Barn last year, the Festival has announced that the 2025 community production will be The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare. Auditions will be held on February 16, 2025, and the organisers are calling for local theatre enthusiasts who would like to get involved to get in touch.

The Taming of the Shrew is one of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies, featuring the fiery Katherina and the boastful and selfish Petruchio in a battle of wits, wills, and unexpected love. While celebrated for its humour and characters, the play also invites reflection on societal expectations and relationships, making it a fascinating piece for modern reinterpretation.

The first of these will be a

Shakespeare Workshop on January 26. Those taking part will have the opportunity to dive into the world of one of the world’s greatest playwrights and explore the life and times of William Shakespeare.

Participants will get a glimpse into the era he lived in and some of his most famous plays. The workshop is open to everyone whether they are a theatre enthusiast or simply curious about Shakespeare. The cost is £5 per person.

Tallow boiling had residents holding noses MOST early Western cultures relied primarily on candles and these were rendered from animal fat or tallow which produced a foul acrid smell and a very smoky flame.

Tallow candles were used in street lighting and the odour would add to the other street odours of the time.

As late as 1862 the Wells Journal carried a report of offensive tallow boiling in Wells: “Neighbours complained of the offensive smell of tallow boiling on Mrs Oldfield’s premises. Hairdresser Mr Lovegrove said that ‘the nuisance is so great that it is beginning to affect business as ladies could not remain in his shop as the smell was so great and offensive.

At night time it is terrible and although he stopped up the keyhole of his bedroom door the smell came in almost enough to stifle anyone. It was caused by not only the melting but the large collection of animal fat stored on Mrs Oldfield’s premises.’”

William Tate, writing in 1905 of his childhood in Wells, remembers: “I recall Steve H who was an industrious giant of a fellow and he was the only man in Wells that could stand the stench of the boiling tallow at Oldfield’s candle makers.

“He stirred the boiling fat which emitted very nauseous odours. I have known nearly the whole of the inhabitants of the High Street and adjoining thoroughfares up in arms when the tallow was boiling. Over the seething, boiling fat the heroic

A major improvement came in the Middle Ages when beeswax candles were introduced into Europe.

They emitted a pleasant sweet smell and beeswax candles were used widely and mainly for church ceremonies but as they were expensive, few individuals, other than the very wealthy, could afford to burn them in their own home.

they went from house to house making candles from kitchen fat which was saved specifically for the purpose.

In Wells candles were sometimes used as payment for rent on some properties owned by the church.

Candles were used continuously in the Cathedral and were looked after by the office of the treasurer.

The Wells Cathedral Miscellany, held in the library of the Wells & Mendip Museum, makes fascinating reading, and shows us the value and importance of candles in the daily life of the church and the ritual that candles played in the church services.

“The two candles on the High Altar, gift of Lord Bishop Jocelyn, shall be lit whenever service is read or sung in the choir.

“At Mass, Evensong and Mattins there shall burn three candles in three sconces. When canonical Mattins and Evensong are ended two of the candles in the sconces before the altar shall be put out, though the middle one should remain alight while Mattins and Evensong of the Blessed Virgin are said privately in choir.

“On all simple feasts ten candles must be lit, six upon the beam and two in the two sconces with the two given by Bishop Jocelyn.

“On all principal and greater

double feasts twenty-six candles must be lit in the choir at Mattins, Mass and Evensong.

On doubles and lesser doubles throughout the year eighteen candles are lit upon the beam.

“All private masses two candles of four pound each are to be lit and burn until the end of mass.

“Two Acolytes should always precede the priest with lit candles when he comes out for and returns from Mass.

“Should the candles on the altar table not be conveniently placed for the book altar servers should always have a small candle to be placed by the book.

“A perpetual candle is to burn in a sconce at the choir step. Two candles should be lit whenever the service is read or sung in the choir.”

In 1706 we read that Thomas Cooper was appointed the Sacrist (an officer charged with the care of the sacristy, the church and its contents):

He was to toll the chapter bell at the four quarter days, to wind the clock and the chimes and check the leather linings for the clappers of the bell. Fireworks among topics to be debated Thoughts of Wells and Mendip Hills MP Tessa Munt HAPPY New Year! I hope you’ve enjoyed a peaceful and restful break of some sort over the last few days.

Since my last update, I have questioned Ministers about issues including: the Government’s police review and the large numbers of staff and funding allocated to Police & Crime Commissioners’ offices when there are so few local police officers; restoring the plug in grant for electric car chargers; BT’s slackness in reconnecting a local couple’s landline and restoring their old telephone number; the late release of information under our lax lobbying transparency rules; and the Post Office’s continuing appalling treatment of victims of the Horizon scandal.

Both now progress to Bill Committees with several months of debate ahead, where the details are discussed line by line. Coffee morning funds provisions A COFFEE morning that was held at Stoberry Park, Wells, in July by permission of Tim and Frances Young raised £736, that was split between the Wells Foodbank and food for families in Sri Lanka. Carolyn King also donated all the proceeds from the sale of her artworks towards the two causes.

The funds meant that Julie Cox was able to organise food packages for families who have a child with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) while she was in Eastern Sri Lanka. She has been visiting and volunteering in Sri Lanka for many years, focussing on children with additional needs and disabilities, and says that

the experience of being part of a team delivering food packages donated by people of her childhood home of Wells has been a highlight.

She and the Community Doctor she accompanied to meet 36 families “explained that the food packs were from the people of Wells, Somerset, UK. There were many tears, smiles and hugs. The families were extremely grateful and also very moved that they had been cared for and thought of.”

She thanked everyone who was at Stoberry Park for the fundraising event and all who helped and supported. “You have made a massive difference to people’s lives,” she said.

Awards for martial arts instructor A LOCAL martial arts instructor has ended the year on a high after receiving two awards.

Sensei Joe Andrews (5th Dan) is the Chief Instructor at Somerset Applied Karate in Glastonbury. He started the club there after training for 20 years in Wells, where he lives.

In October, Joe attended the Kaizen 2024 martial arts event in Nottingham. Kaizen is an events organisation that plans seminars, courses and expos for all martial arts, combative experts and weapons specialists.

After the annual Kaizen Expo there is an awards ceremony to recognise rising stars, outstanding contributions and lifetime achievement. Joe was given an award for Outstanding Contribution to Martial Arts because of his club, seminar attendance and YouTube channel.

Recent changes to Stamp Duty Land Tax

WHO is likely to be affected by the recent changes to Stamp Duty Land Tax? The answers are individuals purchasing additional residential properties, such as buy-to let properties or second homes in England and Northern Ireland, as well as Company purchases.

And what are the changes?

The Stamp Duty Land Tax on purchases of second homes/buy-to-let properties has increased from three per cent to five per cent above the standard residential rates.

Companies purchasing residential properties worth

more than £500,000 will find themselves paying 17 per cent rather than the previous 15 per cent tax.

These increases affect any residential property purchase which completes on or after October 31, 2024. Where contracts are exchanged prior to October 31, 2024, but complete after this deadline, transitional rules may apply.

Special concerts to celebrate golden year

CROSCOMBE Village Orchestra has announced its 50th anniversary season, with two special concerts planned to mark the milestone.

The orchestra, which has been an integral part of the local community since its founding in January 1975, will celebrate this golden season with two concerts, featuring a mixture of players’ favourites and classics from Croscombe’s orchestral repertoire.

The first concert will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, and will feature a more formal programme, with Beethoven’s Symphony No 3, ‘Eroica’, Rossini’s Overture to The Italian Girl in Algiers, and the Bruch Violin Concerto No 1.

The violin soloist for the evening will be Peter Sackett, grandson of founding member Jo Sackett, continuing a proud family tradition.

The season will conclude with a Prom-style concert on Saturday, May 17, 2025, featuring shorter, well-loved favourites in a light-hearted and family-friendly atmosphere, ideal for audience members of all ages.

Both concerts will take place at Croscombe Village Hall, starting at 7pm. Tickets cost £10 for adults and under 16s free.

several of whom have gone on to enjoy successful careers as orchestral players and soloists.

Anthony Bevan, aged 71, who has conducted the orchestra since 1978, said: “It has been an honour to lead this wonderful orchestra for so many years, watching so many talented young musicians find their voice and their passion for music. We are a family, and this anniversary season is a testament to the dedication and joy that music has brought to all of us.”

Jo Sackett, a founding member of the orchestra and its secretary for five decades, said: “When we started this orchestra in 1975, we could only dream of reaching this point. It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come and to celebrate this occasion with both familiar faces and new ones. We look forward to many more years of music-making.

“My son Jonathan triggered the idea when he commented that the 1973 Christmas service at St Mary the Virgin, Croscombe, ‘could have done with an

orchestra’. On the cold evening of January 15, 1975, 15 adults and children met to make music together under my leadership.

“In early 1977, I asked Graham Robinson, formerly a musician in the Royal Marines, to take over as the conductor of 30 members, giving two concerts a year in various venues. These often included performances by the Bevan Family Choir, the Roseberry Trio, and David and Virginia Nasmyth.

“Croscombe Village Hall is now our permanent home. Tony Bevan became conductor in late 1978, and since then has steered the orchestra through calm and choppy waters, up to the present day.”

The orchestra is known for its diverse and challenging repertoire and its emphasis on nurturing young orchestral players (somewhat lacking in recent years) from classical favourites like Corelli and Grieg to modern composers such as Nobuo Uematsu, as well as for giving its musicians the opportunity to perform in smaller ensembles and as soloists.

Instrumental players of grade 3+ standard and above are invited to join the orchestra.

Rehearsals are held on Friday evenings, and the orchestra is always open to new members, regardless of age or experience.

handled with care and respect, from the transportation to being present to oversee the event as a piper played her into the simple, heartfelt family-led ceremony.

The peaceful surroundings of the woodland, combined with the intimacy of the service, created a fitting tribute.

The next week, we supported several families closer to home with a variety of ceremonies, each as unique as the individuals they honoured. In our own chapel of rest, we helped one family host an intimate goodbye, providing a serene and private space to reflect and say farewell. At St John’s Church in Chilcompton, we co-ordinated a traditional church service followed by a private committal at Mendip Crematorium.

Each service was handled with the same meticulous care and attention to detail that defines our work, ensuring that every moment was as meaningful and personal as possible.

By the end of the week, we were on the road again, this time heading to Plymouth. Here, we fulfilled the wishes of a lady whose

Choral work that celebrates peace

THE Tallis Voices are returning to Wells Cathedral on Friday, January 17, at 7pm, for their annual concert in support of the Wells Cathedral Chorister Trust.

They have been holding this event for approximately 20 years and have raised in the region of £30,000 for the Chorister Trust over this time. Their programme this year will feature choral works focussing on the theme of reconciliation. The concert will be directed by Peter Leech in his final year directing the choir.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS CITY PROBUS CLUB OUR speaker at our December meeting was James Porter who gave an excellent talk on the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685.

Charles II was king with no apparent legitimate heirs. Most likely to succeed him was his brother, James, the Duke of York. Charles’ illegitimate son, born in Holland, was James the Duke of Monmouth. Our speaker described the political situation and subsequent events leading up to the battle and the battle itself in great detail which brought it to life. Needless to say the Duke of Monmouth lost the battle and was later executed.

Also in December we held our Christmas Lunch at the Golf Club with members and partners attending for a good meal and celebration.

Wells Probus had a recent visit to Holy Well Glass in Wells.

This revealed a fascinating story of stained glass, both ancient and modern. The premises are in an old grain mill near the centre of Wells.

The Director, Stephen Clare MBE, showed a group of Probus members around the building, explaining some of the techniques used to both repair and manufacture stained glass windows.

Wells Probus Club promotes fellowship among retired professional and business men, through regular meetings, talks, discussions, visits and holidays.

It welcomes men aged 50 and over, resident in the Wells area, who have fully or partially retired.

“We meet in Wells Golf Club on the second Tuesday of every month at 10.15am, when we have a short business meeting, followed by our speaker for the day, and then lunch,” said chairman Kerr Stirling.

“We have had an amazingly varied range of subjects over the years, informative, thoughtful and amusing.

“We also have day trips to interesting places, some local and some at a distance, celebratory meals and twice yearly five-day coach holidays.

“Wives/partners of members can join us for lunch following a monthly meeting or to join in any of the other activities.

WELLS AND SHEPTON AMNESTY GROUP THE Wells and Shepton Amnesty Group was one of several local Amnesty organisations from across the UK who went to the House of Commons on December 4 to talk to their local MP about human rights and to raise awareness of the plight of prisoners of conscience across the globe, many of whom are British nationals. Hosted by Fabian Hamilton MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Human Rights, the ‘Human Rights Day Reception’ was a chance for members of Amnesty groups to engage with MPs and to involve them in some of their campaigns.

One of the speakers was Anoosheh Ashoori, a BritishIranian man who had endured severe conditions in Evin prison in Iran for five years before being

released in 2022. For those who had travelled to the event from Wells, it was particularly moving to meet Anoosheh, as he remembered Wells Amnesty member, the late Anne Minns, who wrote regularly to him whilst he was in prison.

Local Amnesty groups often ‘adopt’ a prisoner of conscience who then becomes the focus of much of their work, being guided about how to campaign for that prisoner by a co-ordinator in Amnesty’s office in London.

Some months ago, the Wells and Shepton Group took up the up the case of Alaa Abd El-Fattah, a British-Egyptian national who has been in prison in Egypt for five years on the spurious charge of ‘spreading fake news’.

Amnesty considers him a prisoner of conscience, detained only for expressing his right to free speech.

Members of the Wells and Shepton group talked to former Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell MP who has taken up Alaa’s case in Parliament, and has recently secured a debate in the House of Commons where he called on the Government to do more to secure Alaa’s release. Alaa has been held in harsh conditions while detained, brutally treated, and denied visits by the British Consulate despite his British nationality.

His sentence should have ended weeks ago, but he remains in prison, a fact that has forced his mother to go on hunger strike.

An acclaimed writer as well as an activist, Alaa was named Writer of Courage 2024 at the annual Pen Pinter Prize. Many of his works were written in prison.

ON December 3 we kicked off the celebrations with our Christmas meeting. Lisa, aka ‘the chocolate tart’, came to tell us about her life in chocolate – and told us we didn’t need to be faithful to one chocolate, which was good news for all of us.

Lisa told us about her cookery journey from cheffing in London, working in The House of Lords and preparing a dinner for our late Queen Elizabeth, to running her chocolate school in Clevedon.

A truly engaging speaker who was clearly passionate about her subject. Not to mention the delicious chocolate.

Other Christmas celebrations are afoot with the Saturday supper club enjoying the festive tea at the Loft, and the committee heading to Rugantinos (of course we’ll be having a meeting there…). A group of us had a lovely time at the Mayor’s charity ball – after all, we do like a boogie, and we wanted to support the Scouts.

In addition, there have been two walking trips to Stourhead, one with actual snow flurries so it must be nearly Christmas. The annual Somerset Federation Carol Service at the Cathedral is yet to come (at the time of writing) but the choir girls have been practising so all should be as it should be.

Lots of exciting things planned for next year but for now we would just like to wish everyone a lovely Christmas and happy New Year.

They came from Aberystwyth, Cardiff, Carmarthen, the Rhondda and even Maenclochog of the Preseli Hills. Teachers there were many, but no other of traditional Welsh exports to England of preachers and doctors. Great tales of yore recalled and family connections and friends explored. Most uplifting even though this time the singing was deferred to another meet.

The Burcott Inn is now braced for another gathering of the new-found lunch group on St David’s Day (March 1).

RICHARD III SOCIETY SOMERSET BRANCH THE Society meets at Wells Museum on the third Saturday of the month. Doors open at 12.30pm with the first talk of the afternoon starting at 1.30pm and the meeting concluding at 4pm. Refreshments are served before the first talk and during the interval.

On Saturday, January 18, Giles Mercer will present a lecture on Benedictine Bath, followed by Kieran Molloy’s talk, Perkin Warbeck, the Wells Connection.

MENDIP FIBROMYALGIA SUPPORT GROUP OUR December meeting was a joyful Christmas celebration.

An Octet from Wells City Band, with the help of members of the Cantabile Choir, led us in singing well known carols.

Our thanks go to our members Ros Mundy and Tanya Flagg who organised the visiting singers and musicians.

We ended the morning with a delicious Christmas lunch at the Old Down Inn which gave a chance for the band to meet the fibromyalgia members for a chat.

We will meet on January 1 to taste some Royal recipes and end with home-made soup.

Our members volunteered their time again this year to help with the putting out and clearing away of the crib sets for the Crib Festival at St Cuthbert’s Church.

December’s festivities culminated in a joyous meeting in the Town Hall. Festive food, drink, craft and fun was thoroughly enjoyed by our members at our final meeting of 2024.

Liz Hamblin WELLS FLORAL ART CLUB CLUB President Non Hobson welcomed members to our annual general meeting on Tuesday, November 26.

Following reports by our club chairman and treasurer, the committee was sworn in and the charity for 2025 agreed upon. In fact, following a short discussion, the club members suggested that we support two charities, Somerset Sight and The Strawberry Line footpath. With all the formalities completed the committee served tea and cakes made by Elaine Lewis and Pat Ardron.

On Tuesday, December 3, members met at The Old Down Inn for a very enjoyable Christmas lunch.

Our final meeting of the year was held in the church hall on December 10 when members made their own Christmas arrangements for their doors or tables.

Our first meeting of 2025 will be on Tuesday, January 14, when we will welcome National Demonstrator and gold medallist Coral Gardiner as our demonstrator, her title will be Nature’s Palette. Coral is well known in floral art circles for beautiful designs and has had the honour of arranging flowers

Jenny Jones WELLS U3A ALL the groups in Wells u3a are looking forward to a very active 2025. Not all the 50 + groups are academic, some look to their artistic side. Painting for Pleasure is one of these. They are a small friendly group of aspiring artists who get together twice a month to pursue their own artistic endeavours, be they in acrylic, oils, watercolour, pastel or collage. There is no tuition, but great mutual encouragement and support over the essential cuppa. New members are always welcome in this group.

Another group pursuing their artistic talents is Digital Photography. They appeal to a range of people who have an interest in taking photographs.

Some have been enthusiastic users of film cameras in the past and are now interested in digital photography, some have bought or been given digital cameras and want to make more use of them, and some want to get more out of the camera on their smartphones. In brief, they encourage their members to use their cameras. To take them off the shelf, take them out of the house and take some pictures.

They usually decide on a monthly theme. In recent months these have been Christmas Lights, Food, Symmetry, Trees and Autumn Leaves. They also organise visits where they can take photographs together. This year they have had photographic visits to the Somerset Steam and Country Show, East Somerset Railway and Bristol Docks. They have also taken pictures around the Market Place and Cathedral at twilight. Their focus is on having fun.

They have members who can give technical advice where members are looking for it.

They did offer some suggested settings for members to try when taking photographs at twilight. Similarly, they offered some advice about taking pictures of Christmas lights. If members are struggling with a complicated camera they do offer

For the members who appreciate art but do not wish to put brush to canvas or even worry about artistic photographs, there is the Art Appreciation group who meet once a month and enjoy a series of lectures on screen given by art lecturers from various sources. At present they are getting engrossed in a series on Post Impressionism: the beginning of modern art.

They have covered the work of well-known artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec as well as less known artists such as Emile Bernard, Paul Serusier and Louis Anquetin. The films go into details of their various styles of painting and how it all evolves into Modern Art of the 20th century.

All of our groups are friendly, even if their subject is serious.

IT truly felt like the start to the run-up to Christmas when the ladies of Coxley WI met for their December meeting. It was our Christmas party and social evening and was well attended.

The business of the day was dispensed with firstly.

Hilary reported that the walk planned from Axbridge to Winscombe, Strawberry Line, had been well enjoyed by all who went. Next one TBA. The annual celebration lunch will take place at Hartleys Kitchen on January 9. The craft group had a productive session when they met, next one TBA also.

Reminders were given for the annual WI carol service in the Cathedral, and arrangements were made to assemble Christmas shoe box gifts for the local YMCA. Coxley WI are through to the next round of Somerset WI skittles competition. Next match TBA in the new year plus a practice.

Peggy gave us an up to date financial report, which is looking reasonably healthy currently. It was agreed that that we would raise our refreshment money to 50p to cover increasing costs.

We had several light-hearted quizzes, followed by readings and sketches provided by members.

us. As usual members did themselves proud by providing an excellent buffet spread, which was greatly enjoyed.

We had a large raffle and managed to raise £50, which we intend to donate to the newly formed Wells Youth Club. We wish them success.

We finished up the evening with carol singing. Much enjoyed by all and made us feel very Christmassy.

Our next meeting is at Coxley Memorial Hall on February 4, 2025, at 7pm. Visitors and would-be new members are most welcome. We are a fairly small but friendly group.

Ursula Dann WELLS & DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB THERE’S something rather appealing about unseasonal blooms. For example, the odd primrose has a habit of popping up a couple of months in advance to greet us in its perky fashion.

Or a maverick daffodil hangs on in a quiet corner in July.

Naturally, the wintry ones lift our spirits more, even the daisies and dandelions in the corners of the lawn. In spite of the ferocious northern blast which has assailed the South West, what Emily Bronte called ‘pure, bracing ventilation’, one rose bush in the garden in sturdy defiance of it all, brazenly displays its dozen delicate blooms.

Reputedly tender like all roses from the East, it was introduced early in the 19th century and named Hume’s Blush Tea Scented China. Not the most convenient of names but it tells a story, or history in fact.

These China roses caused a sensation in the rose world when they arrived in Europe and their importance in the development of roses is huge. Many displayed a clear fragrance of China tea.

But above all, they had the characteristic of being able to flower at least twice in a season.

Sir Abraham Hume introduced this particular rose into this country in 1809, a period when Britain was at war with Napoleon. His wife, the Empress Josephine, was a great collector of roses at Malmaison outside Paris and special arrangements were put in place so that specimens of Continued on page 36

Hume’s Blush was painted by J-P Redoute and is featured today on many calendars and coasters in gift shops. I have this bit of history blooming as the last rose of summer and it gives enormous pleasure.

By the way, the song/poem The Last Rose of Summer has been taken as referring to another China rose, Parson’s Pink or Old Blush, at least by Victorian sentimentalists. The author of the song was Tom Moore (1779-1852), an Irish musician and lyricist whose songs still live on today; The Minstrel Boy, Oft in the Stilly Night, Those Endearing Young Charms and many more. In fact he was the Taylor Swift of his day performing for Lansdowne at Bowood, acquainted with all the celebrities of the time, Byron, Coleridge, Sheridan and so on. He is buried in Sloperton Churchyard near Calne in Wiltshire. A happy and very accomplished man, devoted to his talented wife.

Next season’s programme of talks for the Gardening Club is in place, an enticing and eclectic mix of subjects: from bees to South Africa, roses, peonies, Tresco Gardens, potting sheds and winter gardens to boot. The first meeting of the new year will be on Thursday, January 9, 2025, in Wells Town Hall at 7.30pm.

The evening is free and open to everyone and with a chance to enrol. There will be a short, lighthearted quiz, a raffle and festive refreshments. Above all, it will be a friendly, informal meeting with an opportunity for a chat.

Everyone is very welcome, especially anyone new to the area.

Members of St Thomas Women’s Fellowship at their Christmas celebration ST THOMAS WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP WE had a very successful evening for our Christmas celebration.

The hall was made festive with red tablecloths, white and gold serviettes and lovely table decorations. The bring and share buffet proved varied and delicious and with a glass or two it was enjoyed by all. Two of our members entertained us with humorous tales and an amusing playlet which was followed with carols. The evening ended with a secret Santa.

We meet again on January 8 at the usual time of 7pm when we begin our 2025 programme which has been put together by our ever efficient Secretary.

Despite the ravages of the Black Death in 1338/39, Wells grew, with seven mills utilising the never-ending water supply and benefiting from the wool of the local sheep, while the cathedral made available clean water from its eponymous wells, or springs, and extended its building schemes.

Thus, our tour ended with a glorious picture of Vicars’ Close, which was entirely apt as the next meeting of the society, on Wednesday, January 8, at 7pm, will take place in Vicars’ Hall, accessed from the Close, when Crystal Johnson will give an update on the major project under way there.

WELLS CIVIC SOCIETY CHRIS Eldridge, head of history at Wells Cathedral School and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, took the Wells Civic Society on a canter through 850 years of Wells history after they had enjoyed seasonal refreshments at their December meeting.

Starting in 704 with the founding of Wells and the building of the first minster, we visited the formation of the first diocese of Wells in 909, then were sidetracked by the see being moved to Bath in 1090. Getting back on course in 1245, with the diocese of Bath and Wells being created and the seat moving back to Wells, we noted that the building of the cathedral had already been started in about 1175. Also, in 1201 King John’s Charter had elevated Wells to a borough with local burgesses appointed with considerable local authority, and loyalty to the king rather than the bishop.

Hence, we had the building of the civic St Cuthbert’s church.

Tension between the cathedral and the citizens led to Bishop Ralph in 1341 having a degree of

OUR talk on Saturday, December 14, was from Clive Edney who is the head guide at Wells Cathedral. He began by explaining how he moved down to Somerset from Saddleworth after he retired as a headteacher from a school in Oldham 16 years ago to be nearer his children.

Clive wondered what he would do with his time now he was retired and thought he would find out about ‘Guiding in the Cathedral’. He was told he would need to do a volunteer job first so he became a ‘Welcomer’ at the Cathedral. Then he was offered training which he started in 2008.

There are several different tours visitors to the Cathedral can join, including the Standard tour, High Parts tour, Children’s tour and Specialist tour (for example, Embroidery, Glass, Carvings).

Clive told us how a guide must be entertaining, never wrong and never boring. Visitors love jokes, quirky anecdote and little stories. There are 72 guides at present but there is a need to keep recruiting to keep the numbers steady.

At the end of the talk, I think many of us wanted to make sure we visited the Cathedral to take a Standard tour.

Our next talk will be on Saturday, January 11, in Henton Village Hall starting at 2.30pm and will be a speaker from a National Trust property. We look forward to seeing you there.

Strong performances from Wells players CHESS WELLS Chess Club has been making a strong showing as they approach the halfway point in the season. In Division 3 they hosted Trowbridge with juniors Gigi Ionescu and Zino Zigan amongst their four boards. They both chalked up impressive wins which alongside Jon Rossi’s crucial draw, helped carry Wells to a 2.5-1.5 victory. This keeps Wells in second place.

In Division 1 Wells also took on Trowbridge but away from home. Nevertheless, the result was the same with a 2.5-1.5 win for Wells. Wins for Jamie Eales

and Roger Morgan on boards 2 and 3 and a draw on the top board for Leon Nelson were enough to seal the win. Wells currently sit in third but with a game in hand.

Meanwhile Division 2 has been a hive of activity. A home match against Weston saw Wells sweep away the visitors 3.5 to 0.5. Wins for Jamie Eales, Jeremy Lynn and Matt Goatcher and a draw for top board John Waterfield meant that the visitors left with their tails between their legs.

Back-to-back away matches against Taunton and Yeovil on wet and windy nights were

crucial as they were likely to be the main challengers in the division. Both matches were five boards and Taunton were first up. Wins for Jeremy Lynn and Phil Johnson and draws for Matt Goatcher and Ed Farms secured the three points needed for a 3-2 win. Yeovil were always likely to be tough opposition and on arrival it was clear that Wells were outgraded by an average of 100 points on each board.

Undaunted they fought hard and wins for Jon Rossi, Matt Goatcher and Jeremy Lynn and a draw from Phil Johnson meant Wells overturned the odds and won 3.5 to 1.5. Jeremy Lynn is

in his first season for the club and now has three wins from three in his matches with a very impressive win against the top board at Yeovil.

In the Online 4NCL league Wells Hartbreakers A-Team have secured a spot in the semi-finals having finished first in their league. Two more victories would see them crowned Division 3 champions. Wells is always keen to hear from players both young and old, experienced and new to the game. AT Mendip Golf Club in November, 92 Mendip Men played in the final Turkey Trot event, a Singles Stableford. Div 1 was won by Richard Connock with 38 points, Junior Member Tate Sinfield Day was 2nd with 34 after count from Jack Vowell with Ben Park 4th with 33. Div 2 went to Wayne Dryburgh with 37, Steve Cox was 2nd with 35 after count back from Cameron Elliott, and Clive Copp was 4th with 34. Div 3 saw a win for Tim Cook with 37 with Craig Robertson 2nd after count back from Tim Patch with Terry Carter 4th with 33.

The City of Wells Lions have ended the year by making more donations to local charities. They gave £200 to The Lawrence Centre – pictured above – and another £200 to the Focus counselling group.

Recycling box for disposal of phones PEOPLE who had a new mobile phone for Christmas are being invited to hand over their old phone to support the work of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance (DSAA).

It is now more than four years since Wells Lions initiated the project to collect old and unwanted mobile phones for the air ambulance’s secure recycling project.

Since then hundreds of phones given by the Wells community have been recycled for the benefit of the DSAA. The Wells Lions have a secure box in the reception at Wells Town Hall where unwanted mobile phones can be left ready for collection.

There are an estimated 60 to 90 million mobile phones languishing in drawers and cupboards around the UK. If these phones end up in landfill sites, their toxic components become a threat to human health and the environment. If the phones are recycled, they eliminate this threat to the environment and also decrease the strain on the planet’s resources.

Reciproc8 are removing the component parts from the collected phones all of which helps generate funds for the DSAA. n For the Lions’ next project, there will be ‘dancing in the aisles’. By popular demand, Steve Abbot, local plumber, and the Loose Ends will be back ‘rocking and rolling’ at St Thomas’ Church on Friday, March 28.
