Soup kitchen to serve up new year cheer A SOUP kitchen is being started in Wells to help feed homeless people in the evening and give them somewhere warm to spend a couple of hours.

They will be able to watch television, there will be board games available, and gloves, scarves and care packages will be handed out.

An anonymous donor has already given £1,000 to the chair of the Wells Evening Soup Kitchen organisers, Sue Ali, to get the initiative started.

Georgie Robbins, the owner of Daniels Cafe in Queen Street, has said that the weekly sessions can be held in her cafe.

“We’re all very excited to get this started as soon as possible,” said Sue. “We will provide hot meals – these will mostly be donated as we’ve received so many messages offering help.

“We will have a TV and board games. They’ll have a nice warm place where they can sit down at a table and eat, and if they want company, they’ll have it on tap.”

Tickets on sale for first comedy shows TICKETS have gone on sale for the first shows to be announced for the 2020 Wells Comedy Festival.

Legendary stand-up Reginald D Hunter and Adam Buxton – who played reporter Tim Messenger in Wells-set hit film Hot Fuzz – will both be making their Wells Comedy Festival debuts. Stuart Laws, a regular tour support for James Acaster, is also appearing.

The festival takes place from May 22-24, and shows announced so far are: n Friday, May 22: Adam Buxton; Friday Night Gala at Cedars Hall; Friday Night Gala at Wells Little Theatre. n Saturday, May 23: Reginald D Hunter; Stuart Laws; Saturday Night Gala at Cedars Hall; Saturday Night Gala at Wells Little Theatre.

Cantabile Choir sang a varied programme at their carol concert

Choir’s carol concert a big success CANTABILE Choir were again in fine voice at their Carols with Cantabile concert in St Thomas’ Church.

They were joined by guest trumpeter Richard Colquhoun and directed by Tracey Hansford.

Ably accompanied by Shelley Prior, the choir sang a varied programme of secular as well as sacred Christmas music, and also involved the audience with a few congregational carols.

The music was interspersed with readings and an unaccompanied trumpet solo of O Holy Night.

The evening was a big success, and the choir raised £200 for charity.

Rehearsals for the Cantabile Choir begin again on Thursday, January 9, and people interested in joining are invited to go along to the Connect Centre in Wells at 7.45pm.

New chair takes over running of Wells Dementia Action Alliance

FOUNDING chairman of the Wells Dementia Action Alliance, Arnold Wills, has handed over the reins to Veronica Devereux.

“Veronica is well placed as chair to build on all we have achieved since the alliance was founded in May 2015,” said Arnold.

At the December meeting, members of the committee thanked Arnold for all his efforts, and Philip Welch led the support for Veronica as she stepped up to her new role.

“As we look forward to the end of our fifth year in May 2020 there will be events to mark the special anniversary,” said Arnold.

“The date for our annual Memory Walk starting from the Bishop’s Palace is Sunday, September 27, 2020.”

Re-elected MP given procurement role FOLLOWING his re-election as Wells MP, James Heappey has been appointed Minister for Defence Procurement by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

James, who served in the Army, reaching the rank of Major in a career spanning ten years, said he was honoured to take up the role: “In a changing world, with so many threats to our national security, I am honoured to be joining the ministerial team at the Ministry of Defence.

“I know that so many in our local community support our Armed Forces and I look forward to now taking up this important role, ensuring our Armed Forces are properly equipped for the mission we ask them to do on our nation’s behalf.

“Constituents can be assured

that my highest priority will always be the service of our local community and so whilst I am now a voice for Somerset in Government, I also remain focused on delivering the plan you elected me to implement.”

Objections to plans for more housing PROPOSALS for more than 100 new houses on land between Wells and Wookey Hole were criticised by local residents at a planning meeting on December 18.

Many of those packed in to Wookey Hole Community Hall broke into applause when members of St Cuthbert Out Parish Council’s planning committee unanimously voted to recommend refusal of the scheme.

Land Allocations Ltd is seeking outline permission for up to 104 residential dwellings – with another 44 affordable homes – on land north of Wookey Hole Road, next to Underwood Business Park and opposite the Bovis Homes housing development.

It was pointed out several times at the meeting that the site, known locally as Armchair Field, has been designated a Special Landscape Feature, giving it the same status as places such as Palace Fields, Tor Woods and Glastonbury Tor; it is also next to the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and should be rejected for those reasons alone, said Ivor Tetley.

Doug Robinson told the meeting that 800 houses were already being built in the Wookey Hole Road and Haybridge area, and said he felt that Wookey Hole was in the jaws of a vice that was closing very rapidly.

He said of the potential new development: “If it is full of bland houses like the Bovis site it will be an utter travesty.”

A Post Office spokesperson said: “Talks are ongoing with an interested applicant who wants to take on Wells Post Office in their High Street store. We are not yet at the stage where we can announce our plans, but we

hope to be able to give an update shortly. In the meantime, we are delighted that the current Postmaster for Wells has agreed to stay on to maintain service in the city.”

Postmaster Kevin Truman had planned to retire at the end of September but has kept the Market Place branch open while an alternative site is found so that Wells does not lose its post office service.

Members of the planning committee expressed their own misgivings about the scheme.

Councillor Ian Humphreys said that it was important to preserve sensitive landscapes, and Councillor Jim Reeves said that the site was not adjacent to the development limits of Wells, as the applicant claims, and that regarding the Local Plan, they were looking at it in relation to Wells rather than St Cuthbert Out. “There’s no justification for granting this application,” he said.

The six councillors present all voted to recommend refusal “for a multitude of reasons” that include over-development, impact on the landscape and wildlife, and the increased strain on infrastructure.

Awards for work in community presented at celebration night THE first winners of the BA5 Awards were presented with their awards at Wells Civic Society’s seasonal celebration evening at Wells & Mendip Museum on December 11.

Kath Bristow, Tina Blackwill, Ross Young, Kirstie Harris and Elsie Williams had been nominated for the awards by members of the public for their contribution to the local community.

The five each received a specially chosen terracotta tile made by Wells tile-maker Black Dog, a certificate, and a rose.

The BA5 Awards were launched by Wells Civic Society, Wells Chamber of Commerce & Tourism and Wells Voice to highlight the work people do for the benefit of the community, and to recognise and thank some of them. Members of the public had been invited to nominate those who they felt deserved recognition and to explain why in up to 100 words.

Soup kitchen plan From page 1 Sue’s partner André Wintersgill, the well-known local chef who runs Andrés Kitchen with Sue, is also going to get involved, ensuring that there will be nutritious food available.

For every customer of Andrés Kitchen, André and Sue will also donate 10p for each set of meals purchased on a weekly basis.

Sue hopes that volunteers will be available at the soup kitchen to provide help and advice, and she is investigating whether the scheme can be extended to other nearby towns, so that there are soup kitchens running in the area three times a week.

Daniels Cafe has started a ‘pay it forward’ scheme where vouchers can be bought and handed out to people in need, which will provide them with a drink, a sandwich and a snack.

“Daniels are proud to be part of such an important community initiative,” said Georgie.

with the homeless by the Wells Elim Connect Centre.

The centre runs drop-ins in Wells on Mondays, 9am-11am (breakfast); Wednesdays, noon to 2pm (community lunch); and Fridays, 3pm-5pm (soup).

Suzanne Addicott, head of the outreach team, said: “We specialise in providing immediate and wide-ranging support, from housing to health, for anyone who finds themselves, or is reported to be, sleeping rough.

“We work closely with other local support agencies and professionals to support individuals sleeping rough off the streets as quickly as possible. At any one time we will know who is out there and be working assertively to address the issues that have caused their homelessness.”

Rough sleepers can be directed to one of the drop-ins, or the centre can be contacted on 01749 677097. Over the winter the centre will be running an emergency provision for those rough sleeping in Mendip.

Heads Up has thanked two Wells businesses for raising funds for the mental health charity, based at Upper Breach, South Horrington.

Election for two city councillors

Groups given thousands in grants

AN election will be held to choose two new city councillors for Wells City Council’s St Thomas Ward.

Wells Voice reported last month that Tony Robbins had resigned as a councillor for the ward. Andrew Fawcett has since resigned as well.

COMMUNITY groups around Wells are celebrating a seasonal gift of thousands of pounds in grants from St Cuthbert Out Parish Council.

VILLAGES around Wells face a bill of £20,000 to turn off street lights after midnight instead of burning them all night, a local councillor has discovered.

Councillor Ian Humphreys, of St Cuthbert Out Parish Council, said Somerset Highways’ funding formula means there is no saving in turning them off later.

“The cost of fitting a timer to each street light is around £70,” he said. “As we have nearly 300 such lights this amounts to £20,000 for the parish as a whole.”

St Cuthbert Out Parish Council, which covers all the villages around Wells, is exploring an after-midnight switch-off among other environmental improvements and measures to fight climate change. Fighting light pollution is a passion for Cllr Humphreys, an astronomer and dark skies campaigner.

“To someone who enjoys the

night sky the current situation is like a loudspeaker on every lamp post blasting harsh music all night,” he said. “No one would accept this yet we are expected to tolerate lighting that is just as intrusive.”

A spokesman for Somerset County Council confirmed that cost savings for late-night switch-offs are limited and the priority is to upgrade street lights to LED systems which save energy and money.

“We will still consider proposals for part-night street lighting, as long as there is strong local support,” he said. “We are happy to work with St Cuthbert Out Parish Council to consider the pros and cons.”

Cllr Humphreys responded that Somerset has missed the point on light pollution. “LEDs are actually worse than the sodium lights they are replacing,” he said.

The council aims to start consulting villagers on the latenight switch-off in January.

Office made more welcoming

Next serving of free hot meal

CLIENTS of Citizens Advice Mendip can now enjoy a more welcoming environment when they visit the service at the Town Hall, thanks to the generosity of Wells City Council.

Citizens Advice has been using the Town Hall for 18 years, and the city council has paid for and organised the first redecoration of their premises.

The service minimised disruption to its clients by working from alternative locations and only closing temporarily when it was unavoidable. It is well used and appreciated by local people: in the past year it has helped 660 people, mainly with concerns about benefits such as Universal Credit and tax credits, and also with debt and housing issues.

The Mayor of Wells, Councillor John Osman, said: “We are only too happy to support this work which provides such an important resource for local people experiencing problems.”

Classes aim to help with balance AGE UK Somerset is aiming to keep people steady on their feet with Tai Chi classes in Wells.

Tai Chi can improve circulation and co-ordination and decrease blood pressure. Just as importantly for older people, it is very effective at improving physical balance, thus helping to prevent falls in later life.

The Tai Chi Qi Gong class in Wells is held every Friday in the Town Hall at 2.45pm and there

is no need to book. The Qi Gong form is easy to learn and the movements can be done seated or standing. It costs £4.50 a session.

The classes are run in partnership with Somerset County Council and are accessed by referral. Those who feel they might benefit from attending, or who know someone who would, can call Age UK Somerset for more details on 01823 345626.

WELLS Cathedral has been named the finest in England.

Following a report released on November 26 by the Church of England revealing a record number of visitors and worshippers at England’s cathedrals, an article in The Guardian by Simon Jenkins ranked the ten best. Placing Wells Cathedral at number one, he said: “Its sculpted west front glows incomparably in the sunset, its giant scissor arches uplift its crossing, and its column capitals offer an encyclopedia of medieval life. Sixth Women’s Day celebration WOMEN of Wells (WOW) are planning their sixth annual celebration of International Women’s Day in 2020.

It will take place on Sunday, ` March 8, in Wells Town Hall from noon until 4pm. ` The focus this year will be on mental health and handicrafts, and their therapeutic benefits.

WHAT A YEAR! Dear Wells Voice readers and fellow supporters of The White Hart Inn It’s been quite a year for us here at The White Hart.

As many of your already know Lucy and I took the decision to convert The White Hart in Sadler Street from a hotel and restaurant back to its original roots as a pub with rooms.

We did this change just in time for December 2018 and had the best Christmas on record!

2019 has also been our best year since we took over at The White Hart back in September 2015. The support the locals of Wells have given us has been overwhelming and because of this support we have not only survived but thrived, thank you everyone!

Work under way on merger of surgeries WITH the coming of the new year, the plans for merging the two GP surgeries in Wells are well under way.

The merger of Wells City Practice and Wells Health Centre has been approved by the Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group, and all current patients will have received a letter outlining the changes. The merged surgery is to be called Wells Health Partnership.

Dr Jonathan Bench from Wells Health Centre said: “This name reflects the joint partnership we have with our patients in supporting and maintaining their health and well-being.”

The doctors, nurses and paramedics will be working in teams to provide urgent ‘on the day’ appointments, and prebookable routine surgeries.

Home visits will continue to be available to all patients who are unable to attend the surgery for medical reasons.

The GP surgeries at Priory Medical Centre are due to merge in April Patients who would like to have their say about the plans can complete a feedback form in their practice, or via the practice email. Dr Jo Newton will be reading and responding to all of people’s concerns and ideas, and invites patients to keep the responses coming.

‘Rough sleeping’ challenge

Two Bronzes in tourism awards

PEOPLE are being invited to spend a night sleeping at the foot of Wells Cathedral to raise funds for vulnerable people in the community.

The YMCA Mendip & South Somerset Sleep Easy event will take place from 7pm on Friday, March 6, until 7am on Saturday, March 7.

Individuals, families and businesses are being challenged to take part and sleep rough under a cardboard shelter, so that others don’t have to. There will be hot refreshments, a warm fire, team games, toilets and a covered area for families with children under 12.

YMCA Mendip & South Somerset patron, the Very Rev Dr John Davies, will take part in the Sleep Easy 2020 Team Challenge with his Cathedral team. There are three categories in the Team Challenge: Business, School and Parish. Teams from three business activities

Sleep Easy 2020 runs from 7pm on March 6 until 7am on March 7 have already signed up and the organisation is looking for others to join the competition and raise awareness and funds for vulnerable people.

Hundreds of young people every year spend at least one night on the streets. YMCA Mendip & South Somerset tries to prevent others becoming homeless through its YMCA youth work and supports vulnerable people as they

go through the challenging experience of homelessness and building a new life, during their stay at YMCA supported housing projects, including one in Wells.

Show auditions AUDITIONS for Wells Little Theatre’s spring show Big Fish will take place on Sunday, January 5, at noon. There will be workshops on January 2 (1pm) and 3 (7.30pm). The musical is being staged from May 4-9.

Enthusiasm shared as Cathedral guide Clive Edney, deputy chair of the Wells Cathedral guides, explains why he loves leading people around the historic building – and invites others to join the ‘guides’ family’ “A VERY warm welcome to what has been rated as a 10-star cathedral, the first complete Gothic cathedral built in England. It is lovely to see you.”

This is how I usually begin the tours I lead as a guide in our magnificent cathedral at Wells.

I trained as a cathedral guide in 2008 just 12 months after moving to Wells from Oldham, where I worked as a secondary headteacher. Before being accepted for training I was required to volunteer in the cathedral, and I chose to be a Welcomer. This is a vital role as it

is so important that our visitors are warmly greeted.

During the last ten years of guiding I have been privileged to meet visitors from all over the world. I always aim to share with them my enthusiasm for the stunning architecture, which spans over a thousand years of history, and point out lovely features such as the hidden penguin on one of our altar frontals, the grape stealers and the owl in the Sugar Chantry chapel. In addition to a fortnightly scheduled tour I also do the High Parts tours, a not-tobe-missed experience, as well as special tours for schoolchildren.

Being a guide at the cathedral offers many other benefits. These include opportunities to take part in day and residential visits to other English cathedrals and

As a guide you become a valued member of what I call the guides’ family – a truly friendly and inclusive group of people from a large variety of backgrounds with impressive knowledge and experience.

We recruit and train new guides bi-annually, and since taking over the responsibility

for the training of new guides, I am keen to recruit from a wider catchment than our present cathedral community.

Truespeed aims to extend its ultrafast full fibre network into the city centre and surrounding areas, which it says will bring gigabit-capable connectivity to Wells for the first time; while Voneus has entered into a partnership with Wells Cathedral to bring superfast broadband services to the Cathedral as well as to the city’s residents and businesses.

Vonues says Ofcom figures show that approximately 1,000 of the 6,593 premises within the city’s limits cannot access superfast broadband services – those with speeds above 24Mbps – while 41 buildings suffer connection speeds of less than 15Mbps.

thanks to a small transmitter located on the top of the Cathedral’s tower, the highest point in the city at 55m. This can now beam broadband to any building with a direct line of sight, offering speeds of between 30 and 50Mbps to residential homes, and up to 100Mbps to local businesses.

High-speed wi-fi will also be available throughout the Cathedral and its grounds. As well as making it quicker for staff to process enquiries and tour bookings, this also makes it easier for the on-site shop and restaurant to process card payments.

“With Voneus’ help, we’re turning Wells into a truly digital cathedral with stronger connections to our local community as well as to people living much further afield,” said the Very Rev Dr John Davies, Dean of Wells.

Voneus’ services require

Voneus engineers on the roof of Wells Cathedral only the installation of a small, discreet antenna on the outside of the home or business premise.

“We’re delighted to be working alongside Wells Cathedral to bring superfast broadband to the homes and local businesses of Wells, as well as to the Cathedral itself,” said Steve Leighton, CEO, Voneus.

Truespeed’s targeted area covers approximately 6,000 residential properties and 1,000

registered businesses. The firm typically connects its fibre cables to existing ducting and poles used for telephone and power lines, minimising disruption to residents and businesses, and meeting the council’s requirement to protect the city’s heritage.

Its network currently provides a guaranteed 200Mbps to all residential customers and 1Gbps to businesses, with the promise of 10Gbps for any business that needs it.

Truespeed CEO Evan Wienburg said: “Making Wells a gigabit city is exciting and will transform the lives of thousands of people living and working in the area for generations to come.”

n NEWS TIC returning to Town Hall A TOURIST Information Centre is being reopened in Wells Town Hall in January.

It is hoped that the centre will be ready to welcome the first visitors by the end of the month.

The TIC will be based in the East Room, where it was situated before the service was relocated to Wells & Mendip Museum.

As well as providing information for visitors to Wells, the new TIC will act as a booking office for events such as concerts and festivals.

Book paints picture of City Arms’ past A NEW book has been published that reveals some of the long and colourful history of a city centre pub.

The City Arms – Wells has been researched and compiled

by Clare Blackmore and David Mather, and was launched at a special event at the pub on November 28.

Much of the book is based on Wells and Mendip Museum and Wells Journal archives.

There is information about the building’s use as a prison, and stories of landlords, ghosts and a wide array of misdemeanours.

“There’s hundreds of years of history here. We don’t want

to lose it, we want to capture it,” said present City Arms owner Bruce Ashmore.

He invited anyone who knows more about the pub’s history to get in touch.

The book is available from The City Arms in return for a donation to Wells & Mendip Museum.

Police station plans endorsed MEMBERS of Wells City Council’s planning committee recommended approval of plans for a new police base in Wells when the matter came before them at their meeting on December 5.

The proposals are for a singlestorey extension at the front of the fire station in Burcott Road, where the Neighbourhood Police Team will then be based.

Plans were also recommended for approval by councillors for minor alterations and change of use from shop to include a restaurant/cafe and licensed premises (wine bar) at 12 Market Place, previously the Phase Eight fashion store.

When it came to

discussion of plans for a 15m telecommunications mast at East Somerset Way, a member of the public told councillors that he thought nearby homeowners might not have been consulted, and wondered about the health implications.

The application for prior approval is currently the subject of an appeal having been refused

by Mendip District Council.

Wells City Council had previously recommended approval for the mast, but at the meeting on December 5, councillors decided to ask the inspector to ensure, if the appeal is successful, that the mast cannot or will not be modified for 5G use.

At the start of the meeting, three people associated with proposals for a Guinness Partnership affordable housing scheme at Vicarage Fields gave a short presentation.

Claire Brimm, Jonathan Davies and Peter Stormonth said that they are working on a planning application for 23 apartments near the tennis courts with parking for 37 vehicles, and wanted to make councillors aware of their intentions.

Design manager Jonathan said: “We wanted to produce something that everybody is proud of, and is going to look good from the road in 30 or 40 years’ time.”

There were more than 50 entries, and theirs were the first five correct entries drawn after the closing date.

Remarkable story of past and present Art historian Joanna Cobb explains why a film about the Great War she will soon be discussing in Wells has a very personal relevance IN autumn 1914, two men helped to swell the ranks of their respective armies, one from Breslau, then in Germanheld Silesia, and the other from Birkenhead, Cheshire.

One fought for an empire formed barely 40 years earlier and the other for its much older British counterpart. Both were injured close to the start of what was to become a four-year global war of attrition.

One was my grandfather, Paul Wohlfarth, a German Jew, who 25 years later escaped with his wife and sons from the very country for whom he had been prepared to lay down his life. They later settled in a tiny terraced house in Yorkshire.

The other, my husband’s grandfather, Jack Cutler, lived across the Pennines close to where he had been brought up in a similar dwelling. If it were not for these two neither myself nor my husband Eric would be here

now in this lovely city of Wells, somewhere we have always loved, even before our move to Somerset.

We could never have imagined that my grandfather’s passion for art history would now be living through me as I present my talks, lectures and courses in and around Somerset, while Eric now guides visitors from all over the globe around Wells Cathedral. We are so lucky to be here and to be given these wonderful opportunities to share our love of art, architecture and history in this part of England that we now call home.

The story could have been very different had my grandfather died of his wounds on the battlefields of the Eastern Front in early December 1914, and Eric’s not survived the German sharpshooter who targeted him on the last Saturday of March 1915 on Hill 60 near Ypres. But history is littered with “what would have happened if?”, and they were only two of the millions whose lives were forever marked by that epoch changing war, not least this city’s own Harry Patch. Second community play revealed

Dining mayhem on the menu

AHEAD of auditions which will take place on in January, Wells Theatre Festival has announced the second of its two community shows which will be cast entirely from the local community and performed in front of Wells Cathedral in July.

Louise Merrifield will direct Jacqueline Wilson’s Hetty Feather, adapted for the stage

by Emma Reeves with music by Benji Bower. The Olivier Awardnominated production will be staged alongside The Comedy of Errors directed by Ros Johnson.

Hetty Feather, which has also been dramatised as a TV series, tells the story of plucky little Hetty Feather. Abandoned as a baby by her mother, Hetty is lovingly cared for by a foster mother until she is forced to return to the Foundling Hospital when she is just six years old to face the terrifying Matron Bottomly. Professional theatre directors Louise Merrifield and Ros Johnson are on the lookout for local talent experiencing the joy of the circus and braving the scary streets of Victorian London in search of her real mother and a family of her own.

This adaptation of Hetty Feather played to sell-out audiences during its 2014-16 West End run and national tour and was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2015.

Wookey Theatre Group is preparing for its latest offering, Pirates of the Panto. The show opens at Wookey Church Hall on Sunday, January 26, with an afternoon matinee at 2pm. ‘Extra-special market’ offers wider choice for shoppers THERE was festive food and drink, gift ideas and plenty of music and entertainment for shoppers at this year’s Wells Christmas Market.

Leader of Mendip District Council, Councillor Ros Wyke, Wells Town Crier Len Sweales, local Mendip councillors and council staff gathered beneath the Bishop’s Eye on December 14 to cut the ceremonial ribbon and officially declare the market open for business.

More than 130 stalls stretched through Market Place and occupied Bishop’s Palace Green.

Among the traders were Mendip Business Awards finalists, and award winners from the Southwest Regional Final of Young Trader of the Year, which was hosted in the city earlier this summer.

A second market was also due to be held a week later on December 21.

Footpath reopened after 28-year battle

By Emma James AN ancient footpath known by locals as Back Lane has been officially reopened following an epic 28-year battle by West Horrington Ladies Circle members Sally Ball, Liz Pardey and Joan Priestley.

The group say the history of the footpath can be traced back to 1788, and explained: “It was then the main road between the Bath Road and the old Frome Road. It was years later, after the Mendip Hospital was built, that it became a footpath, well used and loved by local people and generations of schoolchildren. It was temporarily closed in March 1991 so the Mendip Hospital site was secure during development work, but was not reopened.”

The closure of the path,

which begins at the end of Upper Breach, South Horrington, and rises to join the Bath Road, caused great inconvenience to regular users and the campaign to get it reopened began.

Hopes were raised and dashed on numerous occasions. Undaunted, the group were advised to apply for a Modification Order.

They compiled meticulous documentation and gathered statements from locals who had regularly used the footpath. In 2010, the completed application was handed to the county council and was placed at number 79 on the list of cases to be determined.

“Cases were being determined at a rate of about five every year, and we were going down the list, not up,” said Liz. Sally added: “We knew that

Eventually, Adrian I’Anson, a retired solicitor, volunteered to assist. The campaigners wrote directly to the Secretary of State who recognised the need for things to move more quickly.

A report, commissioned by the county council, recommended the footpath be added to the definitive map.

An objection from the landowner delayed the reopening yet again. However, a compromise was reached and finalised in October 2018: the footpath would be diverted away from the landowner’s property to

re-join the original track further up. Eleven months later the diversion was complete and Back Lane can be used officially by the community once again.

Sally said: “It’s hard to believe that it’s all over and we have won. We are grateful to all the members of the Horrington Ladies Circle, especially Pat Chamberlain and Joyce Baker who have supported us throughout our campaign. We haven’t organised a celebration yet as the weather has been so bad.”

Liz is looking forward to everyone being able to enjoy the footpath. She said: “The footpath is absolutely beautiful in the springtime with all the bluebells and primroses.”

I WAS upset to see a traffic warden, for the first time, patrolling St Cuthbert Street on a Sunday (on Reindeer Parade day) catching visitors out due to the bizarre and seemingly conflicting parking notice which applies to one side of the road only.

A small yellow rectangle saying 8am-6pm, above a white sign giving restrictions of 1-hour parking on specific days (Monday- Saturday) and times (8.00am-6.00pm). Without very

careful study of these notices it is not easy to grasp the subtle difference much less to realise that the two sides of the same street have different rules. Where is the Christmas spirit we were promised? And this barely gives time for regular worshippers to attend the Sunday service. Both sides of the road need to be the same and allow parking all day on Sundays. The yellow sign needs to be removed.

Route to keep dogs (and humans) happy Phineas and Coco take their guardians for a walk above Ebbor Gorge (dogless walkers will enjoy the amazing views too) 1 hour 20 minutes at leisurely pace. About two miles. Track mostly good; in winter, guardians should wear boots.

Start – Arrive by bus at the Wookey Hole Car Park or emerge crushed from the boot of parked car in main street (‘A’).

Country Lane – Walk on lead south east down main street before turning left up Milton Lane (‘B’) – first road beyond Wookey Hole Club. Continue uphill along Lane for about half a mile past houses and Myrtle Farm. Bending right you will see a recently restored cottage on left – go left through metal farm gate just beyond (‘C’). This is start.

Our leads off if no farm animals.

Uphill – Canter along track through second metal gate uphill keeping the hedge on right. Going through fourth gateway (‘D’), continue steeply uphill through long field with hedge now on left – four legs better than two! At top, there is welcoming gate into woodland (‘E’). Winding path through trees – fine views on left. Good squirrel chasing country. It’s unchanged Mendip. After stile at woodland’s edge (‘F’), cross field to walk’s highest point. There’s

faint track through the grass, follow arrow on stile (‘G’).

Top – Cross stile at top of field and along track keeping hedge on right to ‘H’, stile in corner of two walls carved with encouraging words. Your guardians can now enjoy and photograph 240 degree views to Bristol Channel to west and Wiltshire in east while we check out mole hills. Magical. Treat time!

Descent – Leaving stile go left straight downhill through fields to Wookey Hole village, through nature’s rockery with hare bells; hay meadow; a thistley one for our paws; steep path through woodland (good rabbiting); and tussocky grassland with orchids in season. Guardians sometimes run down! At bottom, join tarmac lane (‘I’) – but don’t look into shed just before gate – you may need to rub your eyes! We bark.

Organisers have thanked everyone who responded to the request for people in the community to take part in the St Cuthbert’s Church Nativity Crib Festival. They said: ‘We were able to add so many new crib sets and angels to our amazing display. We were inundated with visitors of all ages who marvelled at the fascinating exhibits and many went home clutching attractive angels made from old hymn books. Collective approach towards reducing carbon footprint AN event in Wells will bring together local residents and local organisations to discuss what can be done collectively to address the challenge of climate breakdown.

Many people are concerned about what they can do as individual households to make a difference.

Wells City Council wants to bring together residents and local groups to ensure that collective action is as powerful as it can be.

Working on the principle that more is achieved by working together, the council has joined with partner organisations Project Factory, Somerset Climate Action Network and Sustainable Wells, and will hold

its first Community Climate Action event in Wells Town Hall on Friday, February 7, from 7pm-9.30pm.

Called Wells CAN Do, the event is being planned as an evening of local food, conversation and performance, as well as information.

“We intend the evening to be as joyous as possible while getting to grips with the actions we can take individually and collectively to make a difference to our carbon footprint,” said Charlotte Bolton, a Wells resident involved in organising the event.

Wells City Councillor Sarah Briton added: “There is so much expertise and enthusiasm in the city and surrounding villages.

I’ve heard of all sorts of projects ranging from people organising local village transport through to sharing all sorts of things, including garden space for growing veg.

“We want Wells CAN Do to provide a warm and friendly evening where we can share and develop even more.”

THE public can have their say on the creation of Somerset’s first Climate Emergency Strategy on Saturday, February 15, between 10am and 4pm.

Festival helps enthuse next generation THE success of the 2019 Wells Festival of Literature boosted the festival’s education funding to a record sum of £25,000.

While some other festival volunteers are taking a rest, the education team have swung into action, and November saw storyteller Tracey Corderoy of Shifty McGifty fame enthral Key Stage 1 pupils from Street and Glastonbury, with everyone leaving with copies of the books, subsidised by the festival.

Poet AF Harrold’s Poems by Post project had a huge impact on the children’s learning at Draycott First School and Fairlands school, Cheddar. AF is currently sending postcards to Coxley and Elmhurst Junior schools, and will visit in January.

There have also been workshops, technical and dress rehearsals for Neil Johnson’s Primary Schools Shakespeare Festival, with performances from Stoberry Park, Catcott, Chewton Mendip and Butleigh schools at Cedars Hall, while children from St Paul’s, Shepton Mallet, took A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the international Shakespeare Schools Festival at the Merlin Theatre, Frome.

The schools Book Club get-together in November Many more events are to come but another less spectacular initiative continues to make a quiet difference in the small schools near Wells – the schools Book Club. In 2013, when Glastonbury and Street Community Learning Partnership’s funding for transporting children to libraries ended, the schools suggested the idea of the Book Club, and the festival now funds the books.

Three clubs per term combine children from smaller rural schools to have conversations

about books and to meet pupils who may eventually attend the same secondary school.

Ashcott, Butleigh, Meare, Baltonsborough, Butleigh, Walton and West Pennard are club members.

This November, Meare hosted Baltsonborough and Ashcott.

The children always choose the books; the latest was by Catherine Doyle.

Bug McCaig of the education team said: “I led the group, the children had large sheets of paper and wrote brief bullet points about character, plot, themes and anything important they wish to discuss.

“This led to lively conversations about characters and the magical element in the story; several children noticed a similarity to the Harry Potter series and ‘dementor-like’ characters called ‘soulseekers’.

They love a visit to another primary school and after encouragement will begin a discussion, express opinions and listen to others.”

A simple activity but so effective and, like all the others on the 2020 programme, all made possible by the audiences at the Wells Festival of Literature.

The Death of Arthur being performed in the Almshouses Chapel

Chapel packed to hear Arthur’s story THE City of Wells Almshouses Chapel was again full to bursting on the evening of November 20 with a delighted audience as storyteller Beth Webb and harpist Nicola Devine recounted the tragic tale of the Death of Arthur, a story of love, romance, betrayal, loss, revenge and hope.

As the costs and expenses had been covered by sponsorship in advance, all the proceeds went to the refurbishment of the chapel.

The evening finished with a

glass of wine in the Almshouses Guild Room and, as chair of the Trustees Nick Wilson said at the close of the performance, another unusual but splendid event proved again what a perfect space the chapel provides for intimate performances and activities. It is hoped that the chapel, once the refurbishment is complete, will host many more such events and become a regular venue for the people of Wells and the surrounding area.

All eyes on crime scene investigation NEIGHBOURHOOD Watch co-ordinators, gathered at the Connect Centre on December 4, found themselves witnessing a crime scene investigation, complete with a “dead” body and two fully decontaminated scenes of crime officers (SOCOs).

Ray Welton from Draycott, a CSI veteran of nearly 30 years, who was their guest speaker, asked for volunteers from the audience and three ladies, who for security reasons must remain nameless, immediately stepped up. Ray then proceeded to demonstrate how scenes of crimes investigators approach a suspicious death scene, their decontamination clothing and the procedures they follow.

Simon Lawder, who was re-elected as chair of Wells & District Neighbourhood Watch, said: “All the fans of all those

TV detective series found Ray’s talk quite fascinating, the extraordinary attention to tiny detail, how DNA profiling has developed and often TV crime series get it wrong. Vera, for example, would never be allowed onto a crime scene at all, never mind trampling all over it in her boots.”

In his own report, PC Dan Williams, newly installed as Wells Beat Manager, talked about the new police offices planned for alongside the fire station, and stressed how he was making every effort to increase the visible police presence in Wells, and to build relationships with young people. He said he would like to see Neighbourhood Watch set up in every street in Wells.

THE new Wells City Council has been busy since it was elected in May 2019.

Here are some of the things it has done: n Successfully worked to keep the Post Office in the Market Place until Peacocks open Post Office services in their new High Street shop. n Secured agreement to bring the Tourist Information Centre back to the Town Hall’s East Room in the Market Place.

Sad loss of ‘much-loved lady’ WELLS City Council has expressed its sincere condolences for the sad loss of Maureen Brandon who passed away on November 17.

Maureen served the council as mayor twice (1999 and 2012) and was a councillor for 20 years.

She was also chairman of the Wells In Bloom committee for many years and was always happy to help with planting the beautiful flower displays in the city.

Town clerk Steve Luck said: “Maureen was a much-loved lady and will be sorely missed.”

THE new Town Clerk of Wells, Steve Luck, came to the city as a boy 47 years ago when his father bought a tobacconist shop in Broad Street.

Steve then went to the Blue School and Bath College before moving up the ladder at the city council.

“It is a great honour to be appointed Town Clerk,” said Steve.

“I have worked for the city council for 23 years, spending the last ten years as the Finance Officer, and I work with a fantastic team running the council.

“It is an exciting time to be involved at our level of local government. We have new councillors taking on more devolved services while upholding the traditions of our city council.

“The role is a great challenge which I am looking forward to taking on.”

Visitors learn of fascinating family history

By Clare Blackmore WELLS City Archives welcomed some visitors from Australia whose forbears emigrated to the continent in the 1840s but who left behind a huge and important legacy in Wells.

City Archivist Dr Julia Wood responded to a request from New South Wales by Catherine Hocroft into the George family of the city, and with Catherine’s information and some amazing items contained in the city archive, a story began to unfold.

The George family lived in St Thomas Street and were respected builders. Catherine’s great-great-great-grandfather Richard George built the Wells Union Workhouse on Glastonbury Road, the New Market Hall, which is where Ask now is, in 1835 the new prison to the rear of the Town Hall and Horrington and Coxley churches.

Alban George, the greatgrandson of Richard George, was an alderman in the city and the George family had a printers in Sadler Street and a hairdressers in the High Street.

Catherine’s great-greatgrandfather Alban George had 11 children, and down the generations descendants of the George family also ran the Swan Hotel. Dr Wood was able to show Catherine, her aunt Shirley and her husband Michael with their daughter Poppy, who all came to Wells for the day, some beautiful plans hand-drawn by Richard George of the various buildings in the city that he had built, each of which came attached with his personal seal.

As with all families there were skeletons in the family cupboard, and Dr Wood found in the City Petty Sessions that Richard George had been fined for dumping building rubbish in

Water Lane, now Broad Street, and he was also fined 4s 6d for not paying his apprentice.

Because of the link with the Swan Georges and possibly the boot and shoe maker Georges of Broad Street, there is much more research to be done by the city archive and the family but they were all thrilled with their visit and discoveries.

In homage to their ancestors they were warmly welcomed by the Swan Hotel with coffee and pastries and had a private tour of the hotel and its cellars, before going to Wells Cemetery to pay their respects to the members of the George family buried there.

To end their emotional day they visited the house in St Thomas Street which played a significant role in the history of their family who, as Dr Wood told them, “are very significant in the development and history of Wells”.

100 trees donated to mark 100 years WORK has begun to plant 100 new trees at a Wells beauty spot.

Employees from Mendip District Council, working alongside grounds and maintenance contractors idverde, met at Tor Hill Lane to prepare the area on a misty Mendip morning.

A combination of beech, hazel, field maple and oak saplings were planted. The ‘tree whips’ – which are each approximately 60cm in height – were gifted to the council by idverde to mark the company’s 100th year.

The green scheme – which aims to tackle climate change, encourage wildlife and enhance the local environment – is just one of many planned in coming months.

The council is actively exploring other locations across

the district suitable for similar initiatives, and is in conversation with experts at The Woodland Trust to determine the most appropriate species of trees and planting schemes to embark on.

Earlier this year, a Climate and Ecological Emergency was declared at Mendip, as councillors from the district council made a commitment to take care of the environment, and lead the way for Mendip to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Leader of Mendip District Council, Councillor Ros Wyke, said: “Responding to climate change is a top priority for us.

But urgent action is needed.

“One of those actions, which we can implement quickly, is tree provision – now and for the future. That’s why the green scheme at Tor Hill Lane is a small yet highly significant start.”

Church will host singing festival A COMMUNITY Festival of Singing will take place in St Thomas’ Church, Wells, on Saturday, February 29.

Workshops led by four local community choir leaders will run throughout the afternoon, from 2pm. Everyone is welcome, with no auditions, previous singing experience or affiliation with a choir necessary.

Participation in the workshops costs £10.

The festival culminates in a free evening concert at 7pm

(bar open from 6.30pm), with a retiring collection for Heads Up. “The Community Festival of Singing is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the fun, friendship and community that accompanies the quality music-making of our local singing groups and singers,” said Emma Wheat, one of the festival organisers.

THERE are so many things to consider when starting a new business, but one of the most important – and therefore often most difficult – is choosing the correct name. It needs to convey the correct message to your target audience. It forms the bedrock of your branding and getting it wrong can prove costly.

For those who will operate via a limited company, there are various restrictions on the choice of registered name that a company may adopt.

The Registrar of Companies will not register a name if, in the opinion of the Secretary of State, its use would constitute a criminal offence or it is offensive.

The Registrar will also refuse to register a name if it is “the same as” a name already on the index of company names, unless the existing company and new company will be part of the same group and the existing company gives its written consent.

When comparing company names to consider if they are “the same as”, the Registrar will ignore punctuation, the company’s status, and the word “the” or “www” at the start of the name or “co” or “company” at the end of the name. Furthermore, words and symbols such as “£” and “pound”, “plus” and “+”, “and” and “&” and “2”, “TWO”, “TOO” and “TO” are treated as the being the same. Therefore: l ABC Limited (indicating a private limited company) is the same as ABC Plc (a public limited company) l A.B.C. Limited is the same as Abc & Company Ltd l The Candy Store Ltd is the same as C&Y Store Limited There are also a number of words and expressions which

are deemed to be sensitive and require approval by the Secretary of State to be used, not just in the name of a company or Limited Liability Partnership, but also in the business name of a partnership or sole trader. Such controls are in place to ensure that a name does not mislead or harm the public. It may not be appropriate, and approval may not be given, to use a certain word if it: 1. Suggests business preeminence, a particular status, or a specific function, for example, names that include “British”, “Institute” or “NHS”.

2. Implies a connection with royalty, the UK government, a devolved administration or a local or specified public authority, such as “Government” or “Parliament”.

3. Includes a word that represents a regulated activity, such as “Dentist”, “Midwifery”, “Nurse” or “Police”.

Anyone wishing to use such a word would need to consider the requirements for its use carefully and obtain any appropriate consents from the relevant body prior to applying to use the name. Even if a company name is accepted for initial registration that does not guarantee that it is protected from challenge by a third party.

A company could be required to change its registered name within 12 months of registration if following a complaint it is deemed to be “too like” an existing name, so that it differs from another name on the index by only a few characters, symbols or punctuation if it looks and sounds the same.

Good advice can come from unlikely places IT’S not often that we meet our GP at the Recycling Centre, but the other weekend, we did just that. We are fortunate to have a fairly new addition to the site, which is a skip for household plastic cartons which the recycling lorries don’t yet collect.

Thus, roughly once every two weeks t’other half and I dress in our Sunday best and, with Archie The Office Dog in the back seat (he has long made it clear that the hatchback area is way beneath him), we trek up to Dulcote to empty our cartons.

It usually takes us quite a while posting our collection of oddly shaped plastic things into the round holes – because originally the skip was designed for plastic bottles. However, we plod on and reward ourselves afterwards with a coffee break in town.

Now, however, thanks to our GP, we have cut the time by about 90 per cent. We met

kind of advice can come from the most unexpected quarters – in this case, the GP! Too often, we like to stick with tried and tested methods, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, we should never look a gift horse in the mouth.

In business, we need to be light on our feet (especially at the present time), able to adapt quickly and embrace good new ideas wherever they come from.

We should not be too proud to listen to the most junior members of our teams, because they are tomorrow’s leaders, and often are more in touch with the youngest generations than the current senior ranks are.

So, from now on, perhaps we should all look in unexpected places for sound commercial practises. Now, if I could just eat my breakfast as quickly as Archie does…

Music director appointment

Big hopes for repair cafes

THE Chapter of Wells Cathedral has announced the appointment of Jeremy Cole as its new Director of Music Jeremy, who was selected from an international field of prospective candidates, joined Wells Cathedral in September 2017 as its Assistant Organist.

He has led the Cathedral’s internationally renowned choir since late November 2018, becoming Acting Organist and Master of the Choristers in September 2019. He has also taken on the role of Musical Director of the Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society.

He said: “I am delighted to be appointed as Wells Cathedral’s new Director of Music. The Cathedral Choir has an enviable and richly deserved reputation for excellence which we will maintain and strive to enhance. I am looking forward to continuing to work with superb musicians and supportive colleagues here in Wells as we take the choir forward into the next stage of its life.”

The Dean of Wells, the Very Rev Dr John Davies, said: “Jeremy has been a huge asset to the Cathedral Choir since he was appointed. His personal style,

AFTER another successful and well attended Repair Cafe on December 7, Sustainable Wells is looking forward to 2020 when the six events will be every alternate month beginning on Saturday, February 15, between 10am and 12.45pm, at St Thomas’ Church Hall in St Thomas Street.

This particular date will be part of the nationwide ‘Big Fix’, which aims to get repair cafes from all over the country celebrating their abilities to repair and repurpose a whole range of items, useful and treasured, and save money and prevent wastage.

With 52 repair cafes already signed up, it is hoped that between 1,500 and 2,000 items will be able to be repaired.

In Wells, there will be fixers for electrical items, clothes, leather goods and canvas, bikes, jewellery, small furniture and minor computer problems.

The creator of the life-size bronze statue of John Lennon seen at Glastonbury Festival teamed up with Salon Concepts as their chosen project for 2019.

“I’m really happy with the results,” said Laura, whose intention with the John Lennon Peace Statue was to bring a new focus to John and Yoko’s peace message.

“The Salon Concepts team have done really well to have raised this money for my nominated charity War Child to help the innocent children from the madness of war.”

As well as Glastonbury Festival, the statue has been hosted at St George’s Hall, Liverpool, and the Hard Rock Hotel in London.

Ray and Ellen Bowling have each lost five stone in weight

Couple transformed by weight-loss achievement A COUPLE who have each lost five stone in weight have been named their consultant’s slimmers of the year.

Ray and Ellen Bowling contacted Caroline McKinnell last July when Ray required an operation – but his weight was a big problem.

Canal plan floated ‘to enable commerce with rest of world’ SOUTHOVER used to be the main road into the City of Wells until the 1860s when Priory Road was created, but in 1768, in the reign of King George III, proposals were put forward to build a canal from Wells to Bridgwater by a gentleman who called himself “Somersetensis”.

“The utility and advantage of this undertaking would be very great to Wells, Glastonbury and Bridgewater. Wells lies above Glastonbury and is extremely well supplied with water which by throwing all into one course might be conveyed down Southover onto the moor leading to Glastonbury and thence into

the river to the south west side of that place and on to Bridgewater.

By this navigation Wells and Glastonbury would be opened up to enable commerce with the rest of the world and perhaps only a few locks will be found necessary to render this absolutely complete.”

In 1792, a meeting of the subscribers of Wells was called at the Swan Hotel in Sadler Street to “investigate the propriety of making a navigable canal from Bristol to Taunton to be called the Western Canal”.

A list of the subscribers to this plan included: Edmund Broderip, Edward Tuson and Robert Mitchell, all of Wells.

Edmund Broderip was a solicitor in Wells. Broderip was also the trustee of the Arthur Baron Charity of Wells set up in 1701 with £200 to purchase “lands or houses in the town for the use and benefit of the poor”, and he lived in the house on the corner of Chamberlain Street and Sadler Street.

Edward Tuson was also a solicitor. He was also the secretary of “The Association for Preserving Liberty, Property and the Constitution of Great Britain against Levellers and Republicans” which used to meet in the Council Chambers in Wells under the chairmanship of George Lax, a wealthy Wells landowner.

Robert Mitchell, Esq also lived in Chamberlain Street.

As far as I can find out, nothing more was done about turning Southover into an inland waterway but the research into it has uncovered more about the history of our fascinating city.

n NEWS Discussion of human rights issues IN November, Wells Cathedral School hosted Stand Up! A Schools Human Rights Conference, run by Amnesty International for senior pupils at schools and colleges across the UK. Just under 150 pupils and teachers from across Somerset, Bristol and Dorset gathered for the first Amnesty human rights conference held at the school to hear about current human rights issues and take part in workshops and direct action.

One of the speakers was Richard Ratcliffe, the husband of British-Iranian, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, currently detained by authorities in Iran.

The fundraiser at Wookey Hole Community Hall raised £200

Impressive displays at village fundraiser WOOKEY Hole Community Hall was festively decorated for a well-attended fundraising event on November 23.

Visitors enjoyed homemade cakes, teas, coffees, and impressive displays of work produced by two groups who use the hall on a regular basis – the Community Hall Sewing Group, who meet monthly, and the Painting for Pleasure group, who meet on Monday mornings to paint in watercolour with tutor David Simmons. Hand-made jewellery by local artisan Sarah Lockie was also for sale.

The event raised £200, which might go towards enhanced insulation for the building.

It was announced during the event that the hall is applying for a grant from the parish council of £95. The plan is to use this money to purchase and install a permanent water heater for safer production of hot drinks, which are always welcome during events at the hall.

REACHING out for help is OK. It can be a daunting feeling knowing that you are not as able as you used to be.

We all try to do what we can and sometimes don’t like to ask for help when perhaps we need it. Asking for help can be surprisingly hard, even when it’s only for something minor.

Doing so is an admission that you aren’t perfect, which can lead to feelings of weakness or inadequacy. Sometimes coming to realise you’re on your own and wanting to do something can be a frightening experience, not knowing where or who to start with.

Reaching out is the step to take once you accept the need or would like support. It can be really difficult to swallow your pride and accept that you can’t solve this problem on your own.

Everyone has different needs but there will be a service out there that will suit you.

Don’t feel you have to do this process on your own, ask friends and family for their thoughts and support to access services.

Professionals within the care industry are likely to come out and visit to ensure the service they provide is what you’re

seeking. This is where your likes, dislikes and preferences can be noted.

When your care professional comes around they will gain an understanding about how you would like to be supported and cared for.

No one comes into your home to take away your independence, the service is to promote your independence and lend that helping hand or provide company and support through daily tasks which will have positive effects on your health and well-being.

Being isolated and feeling trapped in your home is not a good quality of life, which is why Bluebird Care’s professionals choose the career they do. n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS U3A GREETING us in Latin, this was a highly engaging talk from the start; John Smith, our speaker, appeared wearing a soldier’s tunic and “boots”.

“I wear what I study!” he declared. As a mature student, he studied for a degree in archaeology, and is a Roman Army specialist.

In AD 45 the Romans marched from Kent, covered in dust and rust, unwashed and smelly, to the Mendips. They encountered an indigenous population living in relatively primitive round houses. But the Romans acknowledged that they were good farmers and had minerals such as lead and silver, exporting their resources to Rome.

The Romans soon introduced tax and modern houses. One of the most important facts to emerge from this talk was that the Roman Army did not kill the population, rather they used them for their local knowledge, and introduced them to Roman culture and ideas. The Emperor Vespasian was a benign but firm invader/ruler.

The Romans were a mix of peoples, dating back to the beginnings of the Empire in 800 BC, and embraced a multitude of religions from all corners of their territory. Each soldier carried a small tablet with him on which he wrote, using it for recording events, and measuring.

Counting, and the inch, foot and mile, were introduced to the Britons.

John said the citizen soldier was known as a “legionary”. He then put on the armour, starting with a brass helmet, with an open face; all the better to communicate and negotiate with your potential adversary, unlike the covered faces under a Viking helmet. These Roman helmets were lined with wool or leather, linen in hot countries, the lining secured with a glue made of bitumen and pine resin.

The Romans learnt from their movement across the continent and adopted and adapted an iron helmet from the area we now call Germany. This was more durable. The military cloak was secured by toggles, and under this a tunic/kilt was worn above the knees. This reduced damp and mud round the legs, which would have increased the weight of their clothing. The infantry

John King with Roman Army specialist John Smith at the recent Wells U3A meeting wore tailor-made segmented armour in battle, but those troops who came to Mendip wore “stealth” armour, quieter and more likely to surprise an opponent, made from iron chain-mail and weighing 12kg, leather being worn underneath.

Bolts, large wooden arrows, were fired from ballistic launchers in batches of five. Their 7ft spears could be hurled up to 30 yards.

The Roman soldier had a choice of nine different swords, but it seems likely that he bought his own iron dagger. The wooden shield, as John demonstrated, was held just below the eyes, and a “tortoise” formed by holding shields above their heads, to avoid incoming missiles.

But for all this bellicose equipment, there were only five places recorded where the Romans fought battles with the Britons; negotiation was deemed to be a far more effective way of subduing likely combatants.

They walked across the Mendips, on gravel roads, wearing studded boots (open sandals), each carrying 50-60kg of kit. There were 40 soldiers garrisoned at Charterhouse, who brought with them the knowledge of roads, houses, law, education, medicine and surgery.

This was a talk given by an inspired enthusiast who thrilled us all with his knowledge and insight.

WELLS & DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB WELLS & District Gardening Club is holding a Social Evening and Quiz on Thursday, January 9, at Wells Town Hall at 7.30pm.

In 1780, so the story goes, Mr Daly, a Dublin theatre manager, made a wager that within 24 hours he could introduce a new word into the English language.

Next day, daubed on walls and chalked on a variety of surfaces, there appeared a mysterious four-letter word.

Puzzled Dubliners scratched their heads and asked each other what it could mean. The four letters spelled QUIZ... Mr Daly won his bet and a new word was born.

The Wells Gardening Club will hold its own quirky version of this popular English pastime with prizes for the winners. It will be followed by refreshments, a raffle and much chat.

And admission is free for this meeting. The new programme of talks and garden visits will also be unveiled.

Pip Harwood WELLS WI OUR December meeting started with Carol from YMCA thanking members for the shoeboxes filled with gifts for distribution to the

young people they support. She told us it means a great deal to the young recipients to know that others are thinking of them.

Sarah and Steve from Roly’s Fudge Pantry in Wells then told us about the history of fudge and the story of Roly’s. The word fudge was first coined in 1880.

Although the Americans claim to have invented fudge, it was already known before then in Cornwall and in Scotland where something similar is known as tablet.

Roly’s Fudge Pantry was started by Peter Riley, a former market gardener, using his grandmother’s recipe in 1987 in Torquay. He moved to Barnstaple, then opened further outlets. There are now 42 Roly’s shops, mainly in the South West but also in Liverpool and York. They are operated as independent franchises by 14 families, most of whom run several shops.

Sarah and Steven first discovered Roly’s Fudge in a little shop in a side street in Brighton, where they saw some leaflets advertising the opportunity to ‘run your own fudge shop’. Being at a point in their lives where they were ready for a career change, they found the idea appealing.

After completing their training on how to make fudge to Roly’s recipes they looked for a vacant shop in Wells. Unable to find suitable premises they opened in Salisbury instead, but the sad events of last year were bad for business. They jumped at the chance to move into a shop that became available in Wells Market Place.

Franchisees are supplied with packaging, recipes and secret ingredients – even Sarah and Steven don’t know what they are.

Vanilla clotted cream fudge is a year-round best seller but shop owners can also develop their own flavours. Somerset cider, and gin and tonic, are popular in the summer and, at this time of year, Christmas pudding fudge is a hit, along with chocolate and Cointreau.

They also produce some vegan alternatives. They are currently striving to reduce use of plastic and are happy to fill people’s own containers.

Samples of fudge were enjoyed with our tea, while competing for a £10 Roly’s Fudge voucher by doing a quiz on the subject of fudge. After

When he was not a bishop at all, but a film extra.

So? He was a medieval bishop.

Such was the experience of an unrecognisable Andrew Fawcett, on a sweltering summer’s day, as he stoically stood on the chancel steps under his mitre and in his magnificent robes while the leading lady uttered one line in The Huntsman.

Whether his experience was more enjoyable than that of another member, Richard Green, who sadly was not able to be at this November meeting of the Wells Civic Society, is perhaps debatable. Richard, in green tights, had appeared as an extra peddling his wares in Vicars’ Close in The Canterbury Tales.

This proved to be a film rather graphic in nature but, of course,

The one-line scene in which Andrew was part of the backdrop was shot three times in a cathedral which was transformed into a different, unrecognisable place with dry ice swirling and an alien, sinister atmosphere.

Getting all the shots and filming all the scenes they wished, entailed the film crews being in Wells a week: all this work and effort resulted in about five minutes in the actual film.

Despite the 5.30am start and the long periods of inactivity, Andrew thoroughly enjoyed his day, which is an experience that quite a number of other Wells residents have also had over the years, although you would never know it by seeing the films, and he had conveyed the essence of this to a fascinated audience with animation and good humour.

The question of how much, say, the cathedral or the city council receives from the film

companies was one that could not be answered on the night.

But Andrew assured us he receives no royalties, even though The Huntsman had been on TV a few days before.

Richard Hanks INNER WHEEL CLUB OF WELLS OUR well-attended December meeting took place as usual at the Britannia Inn in Wells and following the business, we enjoyed a festive meal.

We were then entertained with seasonal music by our own talented members – Carole Jenner-Timms on flute and Jan Dobbins on violin – interspersed with poems and readings by Margaret Haslam. This hit the right note and was enjoyed by everyone and put us all in the mood for Christmas.

A couple of days later a number of members were treated to a food tasting at Cook in

Broad Street. On arrival we were warmly welcomed with glasses of fizz and tasted a range of canapés. This was followed by a main course and finished off with some very yummy desserts.

During the course of the evening, Brett, the manager, gave us the history of how Cook was founded in 1997; with the successful Wells shop opening in 2010. He told us that the company now has shops and independent retailers all around the country.

Following a very enjoyable evening, we took the opportunity of purchasing some of the delicious goodies on offer and no doubt will be returning very soon.

The following day we played our second skittles match with our friends from Chelwood Bridge. Playing against Yeovil, we travelled to the White Hart in Castle Cary where we enjoyed a very friendly game which was followed by a convivial supper.

Although we won the match by 23 pins, as we lost the first game against Shepton Mallet, we will now go out of the competition.

It is important to ensure that you are taking instructions from the correct persons and it would be sensible to ask for a copy of the relevant section of the will that names the executors or a letter from the Estate’s solicitors.

A letter of surrender should be drawn up detailing the terms of the surrender and signed by the executors.

“We have just learnt that our elderly tenant has passed away. Has the tenancy ended?”

Where a sole tenant dies then the tenancy will continue and the tenant becomes the estate of the deceased. Where a married tenant dies all rights under the tenancy are transferred to the surviving spouse.

Assuming your tenant was a sole tenant then much of what happens next will depend on whether you are in a fixed term or periodic tenancy.

If it is still in the fixed term, then it will come to an end when the fixed term ends.

In a periodic, the tenancy will continue until an action is taken either by the Estate giving notice, a surrender of tenancy or through a Possession notice served by the Landlord. More often than not the executors will serve you with a month’s notice.

In the vast majority of fixed term cases the executors of the Estate will ask to end the

Gritters at ready if temperatures drop SOMERSET County Council says its highways teams are all set for winter – with 23 gritters on standby and 7,000 tonnes of salt ready to roll when temperatures drop.

The council has reviewed its winter policy and will be investing an extra £200,000 into its winter service.

This means the precautionary gritting network – the roads treated every time ice or snow is expected – will be increased from approximately 720 miles last winter to 900 miles of road this winter.

This is around 21 per cent of the total roads in Somerset and a similar level to 2017/18, although due to the policy review it is not the exact same roads.

Councillor John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways,

said: “Our highways teams do a fantastic job keeping our roads clear of snow and ice throughout the winter, working hard when conditions are at their worst.

“This year we’re pleased to be investing more money and gritting more roads than before, but our advice to drivers is unchanged.

“The vast majority of roads are not gritted and ice can still form on gritted roads so always drive to the conditions and take extra care in winter.

“I’d also encourage drivers to check our map to see the additional roads which will now be gritted and follow @TravelSomerset on Twitter for daily updates direct from our gritting teams.”

road surface temperatures are predicted to drop below 1C and frost or ice is expected.

Precautionary salting normally takes place before temperatures drop, meaning gritters are often out in the evening or early morning.

In the event of snow, the council has established emergency plans in place and employs farmers and snowplough contractors to clear snow as quickly as possible.

Roadside grit bins will continue to be filled when requested by parish councils and a new snow warden scheme has been introduced to enable parish council volunteers to assist with localised snow clearance in their communities.

Welcome to the 2020 Property Market Will there be a boom in January?

I’M writing on December 16 and already two London firms have claimed sales of £118 million since the election result four days ago. Also, shares in property companies have risen significantly on the expectation of a rising market.

City analysts at Peel Hunt declared: “We suspect the new housing market will be the first to see the benefits, with a pick-up in volumes and house prices as the traditional spring season gets off to an early start.”

As we all know, analysts are always right, so we must be heading for a boom in the market – at least in London. Personally I’ll settle for a healthy steady market with reasonable growth and without the uncertainty of the recent times.

At the time of the Parliamentary chaos we listed a really delightful house just north of Oakhill and in easy driving distance of Wells, Bath and Bristol. I feel this will be one of the first to find a new owner in 2020.

Wells in mid-table after seven wins so far RUGBY WELLS have reached the halfway point of the season with a record of seven wins and six losses.

This leaves them eighth in the 14-team Tribute Somerset Premier table. Promotion will not come into play this season, nor, one hopes, relegation.

On the field there were wins over Hornets 2nds, but losses to Yatton, Avon and Burnhamon-Sea. The home matches continue to receive excellent support and the club are very grateful to the pre-match lunch sponsors, accountants Bishop Jones for the Hornets game and local businessmen Phil Lloyd and Chris Brown who sponsored the excellent Christmas lunch before the Burnham-on-Sea match.

Wells rugby club are very lucky to have an excellent chef in Clive Arthur. Another person who is invaluable to the club is physio Maizie Phillips. Wet or shine, cold or warm, there she has been over the years, treating injuries, advising and administering the treatments.

Wells followed up that win with a hard-fought victory over Almondsbury on December 14.

Almondsbury had two good chances in the first 11 minutes, Penrose and Williams both shooting narrowly wide.

On 20 minutes a Harry Foster free kick for Wells was deflected wide with calls for handball waved away by the referee, and shortly afterwards a fierce strike from Brett Cotterill from 25 yards was brilliantly tipped wide when it looked destined for the

bottom left corner.

Into the second half and dangerous play by Penrose saw him ride three challenges in the Wells box before his pull back was hooked clear by Ben Robertson.

Wells scored the allimportant goal when a brilliant ball into the box by Kieran Davis saw Harry Foster’s shot fumbled, and Ross Padfield was quickest to react to smash the ball into the top right corner of the net.

Wells thought they had a second when Alex Camm lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box and the ball came back off the crossbar, with Foster tucking away the rebound only to be adjudged offside.

“On the balance of play and chances created it was a deserved three points,” said Nathan Truckle.

Wasmuht sets A team on path to comfortable win FOOTBALL Clutton Reserves 0 Wells City A 6 WELLS City A team returned to action against Clutton Reserves on November 23 after a twoweek break looking to continue their recent good form.

Wells started brightly and created numerous chances early on but finally broke the deadlock midway through the first half through Stefan Wasmuht.

Cutting inside from the right wing and beating two Clutton defenders, Wasmuht then unleashed an audacious lob from the edge of the box which just sneaked in under the crossbar.

City soon scored again after Ryan Pledger burst down the right wing and his low cross found Reece Cornish completely unmarked at the back post to double City’s lead.

Wells were unlucky not to go in to half time with a bigger lead with Pledger, Thompson and Oakley all coming close to finding the net.

The opening minutes of the second half saw Clutton attempt to get themselves back into the game and they would have pulled a goal back but for a fantastic double save from City keeper Brad Allen.

This was as close as Clutton got and Wells dominated the rest of the match.

City’s third goal of the afternoon came after substitute Ben Hewlett’s long throw in was brought down by Pledger on the edge of the box, the striker turning and hitting an unstoppable curling effort into the top right corner of the net.

Hewlett then got himself on the scoresheet after a fierce effort from Cornish cannoned off the underside of the bar and Hewlett was the quickest to react, bravely throwing himself at the ball to head in the fourth goal from close range while getting clattered by a desperate defender in the process.

A fifth goal soon followed after a dangerous cross from Jordan Strode-Walton was not cleared by the Clutton back line, and after a goalmouth scramble man of the match Lee Oakley fired the ball in from ten yards out.

The final goal of the afternoon came five minutes from the end of the game. After making a surging run down the wing, full back Jordan Bazley’s cross found Strode-Walton in the box whose left-footed effort capped of a great afternoon for Wells City A team.

Two trophies already after successful start FOOTBALL WELLS City’s Under-11s are eagerly anticipating the new year after enjoying a successful first half of the season, capped off by winning two trophies on a memorable day in Crewkerne last month.

The squad’s Blues, Colts and Warriors teams all take part in the Yeovil & District Minisoccer League, which runs two cup competitions in autumn – with Wells winning both of them.

The Blues reached the final of the Knock-out Cup, in which they thrashed Aller Park Rangers 8-2 in a one-sided showpiece.

In the Knock-out Plate final, the Colts took on favourites Ilchester Spartans and staged a dramatic late comeback to win 2-1 and

take the silverware.

Since the U11s entered the Yeovil League at the U8 age group they have had a team reach the final in seven of the ten cup competitions, winning five of them. They also entered the Midsomer Norton League cup last season, winning that after a convincing victory in the final against Frome Town last May. Their Blues team has also entered the Yeovil League’s U12 cup this season and have reached the semi-final stage, which will be played in February.
