VODAFONE is appealing against the decision to refuse permission for a mobile phone mast on Bath Road, Wells.

The company wanted to site a base station next to the Budgens store, but the application was opposed by local residents, and turned down earlier this year by Mendip District Council.

Campaigners who opposed the original application are now mobilising to fight the appeal.

“We understand that people want a mobile phone signal but they need to be more careful about where they put these,” said Katie Biddiscombe, of Bath Road.

She said that a mast would obscure a ‘School’ warning sign for drivers, while the two cabinets – which would be sited on the pavement – would impede the view of motorists coming out of Budgens, as well as her own coming out of her driveway, and obstruct pedestrians.

“It would have a massive impact on pedestrians using that pavement. It’s an unsuitable place for all the equipment,” she said.

As well as the appeal, Vodafone is going ahead with an application for a similar base station with a 15m-high mast on Whiting Way, after conducting a pre-application consultation, but has dropped plans for one at Strawberry Way. In a statement the company said: “Vodafone and Telefonica customers expect to be able to use their mobiles and devices where they live, work and

“Vodafone and Telefonica identified that they need to improve the coverage to their customers in Wells and have proposed a number of base stations to provide this service.

We are currently working on an application for a base station in Whiting Way, close to the Waitrose car park, and are awaiting the decision on an appeal for a proposed site at Bath Road.

“A previous proposal for a base station at Strawberry Way now no longer fits into our present plans for providing coverage in Wells.”

Man arrested after raid on Boots A 31-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and released under investigation after a ram-raid on the Boots store in Wells High Street.

Perfume was stolen after a car was driven into the front of the shop on November 28, the latest in a series of ram-raids targeting Boots and Superdrug in the past few months. Police are keeping an open mind as to whether the

raids are linked.

A Boots spokesperson said: “At Boots UK we have a zero tolerance approach to crime in our stores and we are continually improving security measures for the protection of our customers, colleagues and property. We are working with the police and are unable to comment on their ongoing investigation at this time.”

‘Afternoon singing can be such fun’ PEOPLE are being invited to sing for the fun of it by joining a new community choir in Wells.

The Wells Good Afternoon Choir is being launched on January 16 at St Cuthbert’s Church.

The man behind the new choir is Grenville Jones, known as Bath’s Mr Music, who has a reputation for getting hundreds of people singing.

The Good Afternoon Choirs are one of his successful choir projects. There are more than 500 singers in the Bath, Devizes, Keynsham, Bristol, Yate and Chipping Sodbury, Thornbury and Frome weekly groups.

“Come along and find out how afternoon singing can be such fun,” said Grenville.

“There are no auditions and we’ll sing popular songs in unison and harmony. There will be concerts and performances as the choir develops in the months ahead.”

Grenville Jones with Miriam Margolyes at the 2017 National Osteoporosis Society Christmas Concert which featured two of Grenville’s choirs, The Bath Chorus and the Norland College Choir Grenville will lead the sessions, which will be held from 2pm-4pm, with Sheila Ross as accompanist.

There is no charge for attending the first get together, when membership details will be available.

“The repertoire of the Good Afternoon Choirs is wide and varied, ranging from popular folk songs through to well-loved choral items,” said Grenville.

“The Wells Good Afternoon Choir will take part in a Big Sing which will be held in Bath on Saturday, June 2, where the massed group of over 600 singers will perform together, followed by a very special concert in the evening at the Bath Forum concert hall.”

Antonia Gwynn of St Cuthbert’s Church said: “St Cuthbert’s Church welcomes this community intiative and is happy to be part of it.”

Grenville will be appearing on BBC 1 in a new Saturday night entertainment show called All Together Now. He was invited to be one of ‘The 100’ judges. Introduced by comedian Rob Beckett, former Spice Girl Gerri Horner leads the panel of judges.

Visionary plan for underground car park beneath Rec

A RADICAL plan is being promoted as the solution to Wells’ parking woes – an underground car park beneath the Recreation Ground.

Wells resident Geraldine Peacock is a former chair of the Charity Commission and chief executive of Guide Dogs for the Blind. She received a CBE for her services to the voluntary sector in 2000.

Now she is the driving force behind a scheme for a car park several storeys deep under the Rec, with road access via a tunnel that starts near Morrisons, and a lift from the car park to the surface in the Market Place.

“I see an underground car park as the only solution that will save Wells in the long term,” she said. “I often went on holiday to Italy where they have all those medieval towns with underground parking. Why can’t we do that in Wells?”

Geraldine’s late partner Bob Gannicott was a mining geologist who thought that an underground car park in Wells was a viable project.

“People worry about the water table but an underground car park would be much deeper and wouldn’t touch the water table,” said Geraldine.

She thinks that funding for such a scheme could come from

several sources, including the private sector, and would like to see a group of wealthy ‘local heroes’ from Wells invest in it as a way of giving something back to the community.

“You have to have people with dreams sometimes. I’m going to gather people round and see if we can do it. It’s whether I have the energy and can find enough people to back me,” said Geraldine, who has had Parkinson’s Disease for many years.

“It’s not about doing different things, it’s about doing things differently,” she added.

A Somerset County Council spokesperson said that an underground car park was an interesting idea, but added: “The development of an underground car park in Wells would be particularly challenging due to the unique nature of Wells being a conservation area and the potential of disturbing areas of archaeological importance, both of which could significantly increase the cost.”

Despite the obstacles, the idea already has backing from others in Wells.

“I support the idea of trying to do something imaginative which maintains the unique setting of our city, rather than simply concreting over the fields around

our wonderful cathedral and unique medieval precinct,” said Andy Webb of Visit Wells.

“I agree that it is worth looking at the costs and technical feasibility of underground or covered parking that is landscaped.”

Robert Powell, chairman of Wells Chamber of Commerce, also thinks it is one of the options that should be explored.

“The recent growth of Wells’ housing stock and the success of marketing Wells as a tourist destination means we need to find a long-term solution to the

issue of parking,” he said.

“Car parking is not only a problem for shoppers and visitors but also for residents and workers and it is my hope that in 2018 all interested parties can come together to seek a solution. Options that should be considered should include sites for new car parks, underground parking, multi-storey car parks as well as a park and ride scheme.”

Everyone agrees that whatever the solution, something needs to be done about the parking situation in the city.

Geraldine Peacock: ‘You have to have people with dreams’

“Parking in Wells has been a frustration for many years and as we seek to grow the city, its economy and our appeal to tourists, it is probable that even greater strain will be placed on parking in the near future,” said Wells MP James Heappey.

“The solution for this clearly sits with the local councils.

But the solution needs to be as imaginative as possible, so that the appeal of Wells as a place to live, work and visit is not undermined by the constant frustration of being unable to park.”

Progress is being made in some areas, including with new signs planned for early in 2018 to guide people to short-stay or long-stay car parks in the hope that they will be better utilised.

“There’s never 100 per cent occupancy of car parks in Wells,” said Mayor of Wells Councillor John North.

“We’re putting up better signage to direct people to parking that is more appropriate to their needs. That doesn’t solve all the issues. Parking has been a problem in Wells for years.

Mendip District Council has five car parks in Wells Perhaps we need to look at park and ride that serves multiple towns.”

Mendip District Council has five car parks in Wells, and says that it continues to monitor and review them all.

“The council are aware that during popular events the car parks can become busy and we continue to monitor this,” said a spokesman.

Andy Webb has offered to analyse the digital data from parking machines to provide a properly informed picture of how fully utilised they are and

whether there is spare capacity.

But with people who drive to Wells to work and shop seemingly unable to find a suitable space in a car park or unwilling to pay the charges, streets outside the city centre are being used for parking instead – leading to complaints from residents.

“The situation in Wells is often seen in historical towns and cities, particularly where there is a lack of parking associated with city centre properties, many of which were built before the car was invented,” said the county council spokesperson.

“Increasing demand by visitors or commuters into Wells can cause increased demand in residential areas as drivers attempt to avoid paying for parking; this occurs regardless of the level of charges or controls within local car parks.”

Signs that things are changing CHRIS WINTER Chair, Wells Civic Society TRAFFIC volume, traffic control and parking have been an issue for as long as I can remember and one that is replayed all over the country.

These problems all impact on trade, safety and health, but after several years of limited success, we are making progress.

It is essential to have reliable information before trying to solve these related challenges so since 2011 the Wells Civic Society has produced a number of surveybased reports concerning traffic flow in the city, parking and signage, which were shared with local councils.

Since then the combined efforts of Wells Chamber of Commerce & Tourism, Sustainable Wells, the city council and many others have begun to show results. These

are especially in two areas.

First of all, we will soon see clearer signage which helps visitors to find the long stay car parks so that they can make the most of their stay in Wells, benefitting retailers, cafes and restaurants as well as our iconic visitor attractions; it also frees up the short stay parking places for local residents.

Secondly, much of our tourist ‘trade’ arrives by coach and recent work, jointly funded by the major institutions in the city, including the civic society, has developed a strategy for managing the coaches – where they park, how they circulate in the city, facilities for drivers and visitors and better information for them when they arrive. Making these changes will gradually encourage coach companies to change their itineraries enabling visitors to spend more time (and money!) in the city as well as reducing congestion and irritation to residents.

We may not have all the answers yet, but we are working on it.

Residents frustrated by motorists’ actions FRUSTRATED residents of Stoberry Avenue are fed up with careless parking along the road, causing traffic chaos during school hours.

Homeowners on the Wells road, which runs parallel to Stoberry Park Primary School, have been vocal in their annoyance with drivers who block up the street as well as those who park on the double yellow lines and on North Road opposite the junction, both of which are violations of the Highway Code, during school drop-off and pick-up times.

Wendy Payne, of Stoberry Avenue, said: “I have been battling these issues for about four years. I have been speaking at PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meetings to raise awareness of the issue. I want to speak for the residents on this issue and not

just for myself. I know for a fact that the value of property is not as saleable with the amount of parked cars in the road.

“There are a number of elderly residents so if an ambulance needed to get to someone’s house it would be impossible to get through.

“I have spoken to someone from the fire service and they said that if needed they would move cars to get through, but even by then that could be too late.”

Other residents echo the concerns and call for something to be done about the issue.

Tom Ainsby, another homeowner, said: “I have been living here for 12 years now and the issue has increased noticeably over the last few years.

Even on weekends you have people park up the road so they can walk into town. What we

The opinions of Stoberry Avenue residents have not gone unnoticed by Somerset County Council, the local authority which deals with parking matters.

A spokesman for the county council said: “We

would urge drivers not to park inconsiderately or on double yellow lines when collecting or dropping off children near to a school.

“In view of the feedback that has been received we will arrange for additional patrols and take appropriate enforcement action.”

Meeting hears about number of parking issues PARKING in Wells was a major topic of conversation at the PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meeting held in the Town Hall on November 28.

Reduced car park fees for people who work in Wells or the first hour’s parking for free were put forward as measures that could see more use made of available car parking space, and reduce parking by non-residents in residential streets.

“There is a huge problem with parking in the city,” said Bobby Appleby, who suggested that a park and ride system could help the situation.

Malcolm Burton complained about “nuisance parking” in Ash Lane, and said: “Parking charges are too high. It’s forcing the people who work in the city to park in our road. An ambulance can’t get down there.”

Residents of St Cuthbert Street were vociferous in their calls for a residents’ parking scheme that would allow them to park near their homes for at least part of the day.

Sarah Villiers said that

St Cuthbert Street residents of the street were overwhelmingly in favour of such a scheme, as well as some of the businesses.

Paula Pimblott said that permit schemes work effectively in Bath and Bristol. “I don’t have a car because I can’t park it. You can’t park anywhere in Wells for more than 24 hours,” she said.

Councillor Jim Reeves said that he was in favour of the existing arrangement, because the convenience of being able to stop for a short while to call in at shops or the launderette was a big benefit to businesses, and not being able to do so would have a serious impact on the city.

Other issues raised at the meeting included: n Concerns about rubbish strewn about by youngsters in the Recreation Ground. David Ellis said that one of his dogs had become ill from eating litter, and added: “What I don’t understand is that there is no deterrent.”

PC Darren Pearson said that the police will not be issuing fines to juveniles as they cannot pay them. n Issues with young motorists congregating at the Waitrose car park in the evenings. PC Pearson said that the police do patrol there at night, that there is monitoring by CCTV, and that Waitrose had been asked to switch off the lights earlier, and to switch off their free wifi service. The situation is going to be discussed further at a multiagency meeting with Waitrose. n The problems caused in the vicinity of Tor Street when a lorry broke down on carnival night.

Resident Cath Bristow said that the situation persisted for four hours, and said people had not been given enough notice to

move their cars from Tor Street before the event. PC Pearson said that he would feed the information back at the carnivals debrief meeting and ask that people are notified earlier in future about the need to move their vehicles. n The potential for an accident because of motorists travelling up Bristol Hill and ignoring the ‘no right turn’ sign and turning into College Road anyway. PC Pearson said he was there when he could be and does sometimes catch offenders. n The persistent problem of rats in the Lovers Walk area. Mendip District Council is to be notified that the rat trap is overgrown, while Councillor Roy Mackenzie said that anything likely to attract rats is removed each day by city council staff. n The dangers of crossing Princes Road between Tesco and the bus station. Christina Borastero, who was chairing the meeting, said that the possibility of putting a zebra crossing there had been explored, but there was not enough space.

Sixteen jobs to be lost when What! store shuts for last time THE What! store in Wells High Street is to close in January with the loss of 16 jobs.

It has been holding a closing down sale since announcing in the week before Christmas that the store is to shut.

The lease expires at the end of January and What!, which has been in Wells for 18 months, will continue to trade until then unless it sells out of stock first.

Manager Sheila Coombes said that 16 staff will lose their jobs when the shop shuts, and said: “The staff are sad. It’s not easy for anyone and it’s never a good time, especially before Christmas. We were always a temporary store so we always knew it wasn’t forever.”

The What! range includes homeware, furniture and party items, and shoppers have been flocking to pick up discounted items in the closing down sale.

“We would like to thank our many customers who have

There are several other What! stores in Wales, and Sheila said that the company was looking for another site in this area, but that there was not anywhere else in Wells big enough to move into.

Rumours have been circulating that the new tenant lined up to take on the premises once they are vacated by What!

A spokesperson from Wilko said: “Wells is a great city and one that has been of interest to us for a long time. Unfortunately, we can’t comment on the rumours about us opening a store in the city at this stage.”

Old Deanery move survey STAFF and users of The Old Deanery are being asked what they would like to see in a new office building if they have to move.

Bishop’s Council, the Bishop of Bath and Wells’ advisory body, has recommended selling the Grade I listed Old Deanery on Cathedral Green rather than spend millions of pounds on upkeep and improvements.

Churchwardens, clergy, teachers, volunteers and others who use The Old Deanery for training sessions and meetings will be asked to complete a survey in January about what they like and don’t like about the building.

Staff are also being asked for their views on what they value about it and what they would like to see in new-build offices if any relocation goes ahead.

The 800-year-old Old Deanery was originally built as a home for the Dean of Wells.

Pub hands over £3,500 to worthy cause A WELLS pub has raised thousands of pounds for a good cause again this year with a number of fundraising initiatives.

A cheque for £3,500 was handed over to Dogs for Good, The Britannia Inn’s charity of the year, at a special presentation evening.

The cheque was accepted by the Rev Margaret Armstrong who was there with Golden Retriever Benny, a dog provided by the charity because of a primary immune deficiency which leaves her vulnerable to infections, and has led to her developing lupus.

“He looks after me,” she said. “He helps me dress, he gets washing out of the washing machine, he’ll fetch the phone if asked.

“If I fall over he will bark or fetch my husband.

The City and Tourism Forum meeting will be first for 2018, on Thursday, January 4, at 6pm, followed by the Planning Committee at 7pm.

The city council, like all town and parish councils, had to set its budget and local council tax share (known as the precept) at the end of the year. This will

in return for his gift. We are not sure that this has always happened but the tradition has been revived as a connection with the history of the city. Everyone is welcome to come and watch the processions and join in.

Reassurances on health after war relics find at building site A HOUSEBUILDER has moved quickly to offer reassurances on health after the discovery of radioactive components on a new homes site.

David Wilson Homes sent out letters and held two meetings to explain to people who have moved into houses at Bishops Green, Wookey Hole Road, and those hoping to complete on house purchases, the steps it is taking to manage any risk.

The move follows the discovery of 16 electrical components buried in a pit in a corner of the former Thales site. These were associated with equipment used in aircraft during the Second World War and contain small amounts of radium, which breaks down to radon, a gas that can pose a health risk if concentrations become too high within buildings.

David Wilson Homes says that this has never been the case at Bishops Green which, as a brownfield site, has been monitored for radon and other contaminants since building work began, but to give householders peace of mind, the company will: n Install a membrane in every garden, a permeable barrier buried 600mm deep and covered with clean topsoil. n Install radon monitors in every home to monitor radon levels for three months, and offer a permanent monitor to those who want one. n Install extractor fans for those who want one.

“We are going above and beyond current regulations to ensure we give our customers at Bishops Green the peace of mind they deserve. We will be discussing with each owner individually specific time frames but suffice to say we have employed additional people to give this work our absolute priority,” said Ian Menham, managing director of David Wilson Homes.

“Bishops Green is extremely popular with buyers both as a desirable place to live and an excellent investment for the future. We have a further 80

There will be more than 170 homes on the site when work is completed, and about 35 are already occupied.

house,” said Helen Gifford, who lives in Hamiltons Close.

“It’s a nice place to live. We’re really happy here – it would be a shame for the area to get a bad reputation. I think it’s something that’s going to be sorted out and hopefully forgotten about.”

Another resident of Hamiltons Close, who asked not to be named, said: “My only concern is loss of value on the house. A few people are concerned about health – I’m concerned about values.”

A woman living in Penleigh Close, who also asked not to be named, said: “They are very good builders. What they found they have taken away completely, there shouldn’t be any problems. We are very happy here.”

The development falls within St Cuthbert Out parish, and parish councillor Marcel Hayden, who lives nearby, said: “I think David Wilson Homes are doing everything they can to ensure the safety of householders and people on the site. Once the homes are all completed this development will probably be the safest development in Wells as all possible precautions have been taken.”

Mendip District Council has been liaising with the developers about environmental issues but was unable to provide a comment for Wells Voice at the time of going to press.

School names its next head A NEW head has been appointed at Wells Cathedral School.

Alastair Tighe, pictured right, will take over from September 1, 2018, succeeding current principal Elizabeth Cairncross.

The chair of governors, the Very Rev Dr John Davies, said: “From the first moment of meeting, my colleagues and I were hugely impressed

by Alastair’s vision, energy, experience and rigour.”

Alastair is a Cambridge graduate and was formerly an organ scholar at Magdalene College, Cambridge, a Cathedral choral scholar and he is currently deputy head (academic) at Bedford School.

“I am thrilled to be Wells Cathedral School’s next head,” he said.

“I look forward to working alongside the school’s outstanding academic, music, pastoral and support staff, and leading a caring and creative school, which continues to draw on the spiritual and aesthetic life of the city and its great cathedral.”

Consultation set to start on Local Plan MENDIP District Council has been preparing the Mendip Local Plan (II).

The document designates land for defined uses; where building can take place, what type of building, and where there should be open space.

Public consultation on the plan will take place from January 2 to February 12. More information will be available on the council’s website, mendip. gov.uk, or from Customer Access Points.

Records throw light on city’s rich history The focus this month is on the fascinating artefacts contained in the city archives EVERYONE and everywhere has a history; whether you are interested in it or not, it exists and is actually more accessible than you may think.

Wells is extremely proud of its heritage and history. It is actually easier than you may think to access information about the city and its past, and it doesn’t involve you having to trawl through hundreds of web pages either. In fact all you have to do is make an appointment. If you are interested in learning more about your Wells family history or the story behind your home, then most of this information is available at the Wells and Mendip Museum.

Amongst the amazing artefacts you will be able to find there are more than 30 charters, the oldest of which dates back to the 12th century, records relating to the markets, royal visits and social clubs as well as information of past elections, important dates and both the world wars. If you live in a Victorian property then it is well worth your visit as they hold plans for various houses.

Previously stored at the Wells City Jail before being loaned out to the museum, the city archives are a wonderful asset for the city to have.

Dating back nearly 900 years, the archives contain maps, photographs and prints from generations of residents and visitors who have left a mark in some shape or form. What you

Music night thank you to charity that was there when needed BEFORE Tina Blackwill’s father died after a short illness in 2017, her parents were provided with a nurse by Marie Curie.

The nurse cared for Tina’s father at night so that her mother could try to get a good night’s sleep.

“She was absolutely wonderful, giving my mum and dad the support they both needed,” said Tina. “This should be something everybody should be entitled to.”

To give something back and say thank you to Marie Curie, Tina is holding a fundraising event in Wells Town Hall on February 9.

Feeling good thanks to power of laughter A NEW club in Wells is trying to prove the old adage that laughter is the best medicine.

Wells Laughter Club meets once a week when members try to improve their health by having a good laugh together.

The club is run by laughter leader Steph Hiller. A certified laughter coach, she says the club follows a trend gaining popularity across the world whereby people laugh themselves into good health and happiness.

The club does not rely on jokes or humour. Steph said: “We laugh because it makes us feel good, and for the health benefits it brings. Some go running, even when they are not late for a bus – we laugh, even though nothing is funny.”

Club members include an architect, two people who run their own cleaning business, a bookmaker, a massage therapist and a Reiki therapist. They meet for 45 minutes every Friday morning at the Wells Recreation Ground next to the bandstand.

“Sustained laughter of 10 to 15 minutes can literally trick our brain into making us feel happy, flooding the body with endorphins and other feelgood hormones,” said Steph.

“Regular laughter can improve cardiovascular health, increase oxygen to the brain,

have such a laugh at work and I miss that.

“Laughter gets you out of your head and into your body. It clears your head and resets the mind.”

Fellow club member Gloria Bianco agreed. She said: “As children we laugh very freely, but as we get older we tend to lose this ability. It is important to practice laughter regularly as it returns us to this natural state.”

Excercise class with key objective of sparing spine A NEW exercise class is being launched at St Thomas’ Church Hall. PilogaFit exercises and body awareness were demonstrated in St Thomas’ Church at the open day in November and received a warm welcome.

“PilogaFit postures and mindful movement will help all, but particularly those with weak

abdominal muscles and those with low back pain,” said tutor John Beasley.

“The approach is based on the recommendations of famous back specialist Dr Stuart McGill.

A key objective is to mobilise the hips and shoulders to spare and stabilise the lumbar spine.”

On track to deliver important benefits Tessa Munt explains the progess that is being made with the Strawberry Line project FOR about 15 years, I’ve been working with the Strawberry Line Group, campaigning to turn the old trackbed of the Cheddar Valley Line – nicknamed the “Strawberry Line” – between Cheddar, Wells and Shepton Mallet into a safe, beautiful greenway for all.

Once complete, the Strawberry Line will join 10 miles of existing traffic-free path between Cheddar and Yatton, already treasured by residents, businesses and tourists alike. It will form part of the Somerset Circle, a grand 85-mile trafficfree circuit connecting Bristol and Bath with mid-Somerset

– a real draw for tourists in the South West.

As the city of Wells is at the heart of the proposed extension, it will benefit doubly from the Strawberry Line, making walking and cycling to both Cheddar and Shepton Mallet a healthy and safe alternative to driving.

Wells is lucky to have two sections of path open to the public already, between the leisure centre and the Haybridge railway bridge and the path from Morrisons to Dulcote.

A Tesco’s grant helped landscape the Dulcote section, and volunteers uncovered the ruin of an old cattle pound for which funds are now being raised for restoration (please donate at www. thestrawberryline.org.uk).

Cycling enthusiast Tessa Munt Strawberry Line campaigners often get asked “When will I be able to cycle to Shepton and Cheddar?” Good news!

The old trackbed is legally protected by Development Policy 17 in Mendip’s Local Plan.

Additionally, Somerset County Council unanimously endorsed the Strawberry Line project last year after being handed a 6,000 strong petition, and in the run up to the election last May promised to complete the Strawberry Line.

Disappointingly, a planning application to convert the publicly-owned railway cutting in Shepton into a cycle path was recently turned down by Mendip’s planning board on the grounds of tree removal.

However, the Strawberry Line East Group will soon re-submit a new application.

Near Wells, our priority is to extend the Dulcote path all the way to Charlie Bigham’s new production site at Dulcote Quarry so workers can walk and cycle to work.

This would run entirely across disused county councilowned land and re-join the trackbed just outside the quarry entrance.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the benefit of this amazing project and would like to thank everyone for their support – whether practical or financial.

THE nights have drawn in and the warmth of summer is but a faint memory. It’s very tempting to just put on a few more woolly layers and curl up and hibernate in the warmth, much like the county’s sleepy wildlife in the winter months.

But now is a good time to head outside to enjoy the fresh, crisp air of the countryside and explore Somerset Wildlife Trust’s Nature Reserves when they are at their most magical. Here, the trust suggest two walks worth making the effort for at this time of year.

WESTHAY Westhay Moor National Nature Reserve, part of the Avalon Marshes, is set within Somerset’s historic Levels and Moors and is a perfect place to explore with a number of wonderful wildlife surprises waiting to be discovered.

Starting at the car park you will be met with the first sign post that will give you the choice of taking the 3km long Otter trail, helpfully identified

by Otter footprints on waymarkers, or the 1.6km Coot trail, identified by, you guessed it, Coot footprints. This shorter trail takes you to the Island Hide and back, which is snuggled amongst the reedbeds, and is a perfect spot to take in the peaceful view of over-wintering birds.

Whichever trail you choose they both lead to the first hide of the reserve, the Viridor Hide, and following the Otter trail you will be led to the Tower Hide, a

great place to take in the view of reedbeds, wet woodlands of Alder and Willow, and the reserve’s wintering and passage birds such as Teal and Wigeon.

By going in either direction from the Tower Hide you can get back to the main path and you will see signs for the Mire (or bog), if venturing this way, to see the largest surviving fragment of lowland acid mire in South West England. Don’t forget your wellies. Here you can find an array of interesting plants and mosses, and possibly spot barn owls quartering and feeding on this unique part of the reserve.

When visiting don’t miss the chance to investigate Westhay Moor’s newest hide, the North Hide. The perfect place to rest, relax and warm up. Although when looking out at the scenic view it might seem peaceful, a burst of activity could happen at any time – patience will reward you! Keep your eyes peeled for an

elusive Otter, vibrant Kingfishers and the regal Great Crested Grebe. Also Westhay can’t be talked about without a mention of the Starling murmurations.

Why not visit at dawn or dusk during the winter holidays to see the birds’ incredible aerial show fill the sky?

How to get there Open to the public all year round, the reserve is north of the village of Westhay, and turn off onto Westhay Moor Drove. There is a car park at the entrance and a disabled car parking 350m into the reserve. A national cycle network route runs along a disused railway line, just south of Westhay village. Dogs are welcome on leads in some areas, and please see reserve signage for more information.

GREAT BREACH WOOD If you would like to tick off a great view from your walking list then look no further than this 4.3-mile woody walk to put a festive smile on your face. The walk is mainly level but there are still some gentle slopes and steps to put colour in your cheeks with the rewards along the way being worth the extra exertion.

To start, take the path to the left of the car park (with your back facing the entrance), following the blue butterfly way-markers of the Polden Way: www.combe hillwood.co.uk/ polden-way After about a four-minute stroll you will be met with downward steps, followed by a wooden bridge (watch out if it’s frosty as they get a little slippery) and then continue over a gulley

and up the steps to reach the path through King’s Wood. After about 15 minutes of walking, following the way markers, you will pass through a kissing gate onto our Gilling Down reserve.

You will be met with a stunning and stretching view of Butleigh Moor, Somerton Moor and King’s Sedge Moor, framed in the distance by the Blackdown and Mendip Hills, pieced together in a picturesque puzzle. Take a moment to look out for Fieldfare and Redwing feeding on berries on nearby scrub.

Once you have breathed in the view, turn left and follow the fence line along the top of the slope to an information board, taking a left through another kissing gate. Follow the stone path to a fingerpost marking the start of Great Breach Wood’s new Discovery Trail, where you will be guided around the circular route by finger posts.

Along the way you might catch a glimpse of a Roe Deer launching across the distance, hear the charming chirps of Long-tailed tits, or witness a Sparrowhawk swooping through the trees. To return home, just simply retrace your steps, following the Polden Way through Gilling Down and King’s Wood.

How to get there Open to the public all year round this reserve is situated about three miles south-east of Street, between Compton Dundon and Butleigh, along the ridge road known as Reynald’s Way which links the B3151 and the B3153.

Company fined for roadworks offences BRISTOL Water have been fined £3,000 after pleading guilty to three offences relating to unauthorised roadworks – including one in Wells.

Somerset County Council, which is responsible for managing the road network, prosecuted the utilities company as part of its commitment to minimising disruption to the travelling public.

The charges relate to the Highways Act and New Roads and Street Works Act and involved three separate incidents: n An illegal road closure of St John’s Street in Wells on June 13, 2016. n Occupying the highway on South Road, Brean, Burnhamon-Sea, when directed not to due to high holiday traffic flow on June 21, 2017. n Carrying out works without the correct permissions on Turnpike Road, Axbridge, on July 3, 2017.

Bristol Water were sentenced at Taunton Magistrates on Friday, December 8, after earlier pleading guilty to the three charges. They were fined £3,000 and ordered to pay £1,130 in costs and a £150 victim surcharge. The fines take into account the early guilty plea.

Councillor John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “This prosecution sends a very clear message to anyone who works on the highway that we will not tolerate unauthorised roadworks.

“We receive around 85 requests for roadworks every

single day and consider many factors when approving and coordinating these.

“Here we have three sets of roadworks which were not approved and caused avoidable disruption to the travelling public.

“This is not acceptable and I’m pleased we have been able to take immediate action.”

Bristol Water said: “Bristol Water submitted a guilty plea to three separate charges of failing to give the correct notice for street works at three sites across Somerset earlier this year.

“Bristol Water always strives to keep the impact of maintenance work to a minimum, although we recognise on these three occasions road users and pedestrians may have been additionally inconvenienced.

“As a result, we’ve taken steps to make sure we and our contractors avoid this happening again in the future.

“The improvements we’ve made include assigning a team member to oversee notice applications to the councils we work with, training for staff working out in our network and regular meetings with Somerset County Council to discuss planned works.”

The county council said that it does its best to plan ahead and avoid overlapping or clashing works and that unauthorised works and road closures make this difficult job even harder.

More roadworks in pipeline BRISTOL Water are planning to replace the water main along part of the A39 Glastonbury Road in Wells.

The company are trying to work out how best to carry out the work and how long it will take.

The road has become notorious for a succession of roadworks that have caused

long delays for commuters and residents.

Bristol Water said: “When we’re a little further forward with this planning, we’ll be in touch with residents, local businesses, community groups and other interested parties to broadly outline the scope of work and talk through and get feedback on our proposals for delivering it.”

Film centre celebrates 25 years WELLS Film Centre celebrated its 25th anniversary in November.

To mark the occasion, a selection of special films were shown over the course of the weekend including, on the Sunday evening, playing the first film that was shown back in 1992, The Last of the Mohicans.

Sally says she looks forward to continuing the work that her parents Derek and June did over the years, and looks forward to the next 25 working with two of her sisters, Becky and Libby, and Becky’s husband Aaron.

Abbeyfield held their first Christmas Fair at their house in Wells on Saturday, November 25. Isobel Panton, the administrator for Abbeyfield, said: ‘We were very pleased so many people came and enjoyed the morning. The standard of the stalls was incredible and it was obvious that an awful lot of hard work had gone into the festive items on display. With the raffle and sale of coffees and home made mince pies we raised over £130, and given the feedback from those that attended, we hope to make the fair an annual event.’

More than 60 stalls filled the Town Hall for the event on December 9, which raised more than £1,000. John said: ‘It was a great success. Parade fills streets AN estimated 6,000 people packed into Wells for this year’s Wells Rotary Reindeer Parade.

The 11th such event took place this year on December 3, and it filled the city with festive joy.

At noon, Santa Claus in his sleigh, with six reindeer, set off from the Market Place for the annual parade. He was led by Len Sweales, the town crier, Wells City Band and a 1926 Bull Nosed Morris car.

With him in the sleigh and in the back seats of the Morris were the four prizewinners of the poetry and art competitions for local school pupils. They were Molly Couch, Samuel Meek, Maya Belle Rowlands and Mia Plunkett Purcell.

The weather again was kind and the crowds of spectators filled

the Market Place, High Street and neighbouring streets.

In addition to Santa Claus and the reindeer, the crowds of young and old were entertained by not just Wells City Band but also the Joyful Spirit gospel choir, the Cantabile Ladies Choir and the Jazz Ensemble.

Monies raised from the market stalls, local and national businesses and programme sales will allow Wells Rotary to contribute more than £3,000 to local charities including the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Imaginative account of life in Iron Age lake village THE Romulus and Remus statue at Pen Hill and Wells Cathedral were early inspirations for Anna Lewis’ poetry.

She was a pupil at Wells Blue School when she won a national poetry prize.

Now, several prizes later, Anna has published her latest collection, A White Year, a sequence of poems set over the course of a year in the Iron Age lake village at Glastonbury.

“I read the Glastonbury excavation reports while studying for a PhD in Iron Age archaeology, but afterwards the village remained in my imagination,” she said.

“What was it like to live not on solid ground, but on the edge of a marsh which was constantly encroaching? What pressures might have been felt by a child

Poet Anna Lewis raised in a small, geographically isolated community, under the scrutiny of fellow villagers? Why, when almost no adult remains were found on the site, were the bones of children discovered beneath the floors of several houses?”

Anna says that most of her

poems are prompted by this feeling of slight disturbance, and that she writes about other people and places to try to understand them better.

She added: “Compared to a single poem, a sequence gives greater scope for developing a narrative, moving back and forth through time, and playing with different rhythms and tones.

“I drafted A White Year gradually, month by month. In this way I was able to pay more than a fleeting imaginative visit to the lake village, but to follow its inhabitants through the seasons, and draw a little closer to their experience. I hope the effect on the reader might be the same.”

These are the first verses of a poem written in the 1850s by William Catcott, the Baker Bard

of Wells, who lived and worked as a baker in Tor Street until his premature death in 1870 at the age of 62.

Born in West Horrington, the son of woolcomber and stocking knitter George Catcott, William had a love of words, and inspired by the life of the people and nature he saw around him, wrote poetry as he worked at the bread oven or when walking the streets and lanes in and around Wells delivering his bread.

A book of his poetry is now to be produced after more than 100 of William’s poems were uncovered in the archives of the

Wells Journal, which published them.

Bob Burns, of Burns the Bread bakers in Glastonbury, was very empathetic when he read William’s poems about his life as a Victorian baker, and he has agreed to fund the publication of the book of his poems.

During his lifetime William managed to publish, by a prepaid subscription of 2s 6d, a small leatherbound volume of a few of his poems called Morning Musings of which there are three known surviving copies guarded closely by their owners, one of whom is William’s great-great-

great-nephew. William is buried in Binegar churchyard, where he lies with the epitaph: Here rests in peace, where whispering branches bend, The simple poet and faithful friend Whose labours tended, taught from Him above, To usher in the reign of endless love: Beloved of Nature, gladdened by her store, Who sang the life and labours of the poor.

First chance to see new-look facilities FOLLOWING years of planning and fundraising, months of work by contractors and days of preparation, the new St Thomas’ Place ‘n Space community facilities were opened for the first time to the public in late November.

The Place is St Thomas’ Church and the new welcoming Space has been created at the

back of the church and in the community room.

The celebration began on the Friday evening with a well-received organ recital by the renowned Wells Cathedral organist, Matthew Owens.

The Saturday Open Day drew more than 20 local organisations and many people from the local community. Activities ranged

Fuel campaign fund already tops £70k GENEROUS Surviving Winter supporters in Somerset have already donated over £70,000 to the campaign, which aims to help keep isolated older people who are living in fuel poverty warm and connected this winter.

However, fuel prices are on the rise, and an increasing number of older people living in Somerset are worried about how they will heat their homes again this winter. Somerset Community Foundation’s (SCF)

More and more older people are worried about heating their homes annual Surviving Winter appeal encourages local pensioners who feel they don’t want or need their Winter Fuel Payment to donate some or all of it to the campaign.

Vulnerable older people living in fuel poverty and social isolation in Somerset are identified by SCF’s community partners, where they are given a Surviving Winter grant which helps them keep their home

warm and safe. They are also connected to community projects that help keep them socially engaged during the long, cold winter months.

The Rt Rev Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath and Wells, has added his backing to this year’s campaign.

A vice president of Somerset Community Foundation and Patron of Age UK Somerset, Bishop Peter said: “Many older people face making difficult financial decisions during the colder months, when their heating bills increase.

So Heads Up of South Horrington were delighted to join a four-strong partnership with three other Somerset charities supporting people with mental health needs.

This initiative called Well Wessex was launched by Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, who chatted to Heads Up’s business manager Sally Dempsey.

“She knows my brother Michael,” said Sally, “and he sent her a text to say she would be meeting my sister.

“I took the opportunity to invite the Countess to come and see the work we do at Heads Up.” The idea to bring the four

Churchill book sells for £2,000 at auction

Nearly 70 ladies sang in the choir at the Somerset WI carol concert in Wells Cathedral

Ladies sing with gusto at WI’s annual carol service HUNDREDS of WI ladies came from all over Somerset to attend the annual carol service in the majestic setting of Wells Cathedral. Nearly 70 of those ladies sang in the choir, having attended rehearsals in two locations during previous weeks.

A few brave men also attended the service. Jerusalem

was sung with great enthusiasm, and the choir sang some wonderful Christmas music, including a musical composition

by Robin Walker who conducted us all. We were ably accompanied on the Grand Piano by Gill Tucker, and as usual, verger Tim Jones put us all at ease.

UNCOVERED in a crate of old books by staff at a booksellers near Wells, an extremely rare copy of The World Crisis signed by author Winston Churchill has been sold at auction for £2,000.

The book had been signed and dedicated to a Wolverhamptonbased doctor who had attended Churchill’s daughter Mary – and many years later had ended up in a local second-hand bookshop.

The shop had closed and all stock had been taken to Bookbarn International at Hallatrow where it was discovered by staff.

Janey Thornton said: “We were astonished to find the abridged copy of The World Crisis had been signed by its author and contained a typed note from his Personal Private Secretary thanking Wolverhampton Doctor Sidney Dyke for his services.

“We passed it on to the Dominic Winter Auction House who valued the book at £1,500.

We were thrilled to hear that the book made £2,000 at their auction on December 13.”

Topics of concern to young debated

Somerset County Council salts over 1,400km (870 miles) of its roads in anticipation of frost, snow and ice. This is approximately 21% of its entire road network, as shown on the map. The M5, A303 and the A36 are maintained and treated by the Highways England.

YOUNG people from Somerset have been to Westminster tackling key issues for their peer group – including the prospect of votes at 16 and cheaper transport.

Supported by Somerset County Council, Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs) Eve Anderson (Sedgemoor & Mendip), Leonie Robertson (South Somerset) and Kira Lewis (Taunton Deane & West Somerset) were among elected MYPs from across the UK at the House of Commons in November. They spent the day debating topics such as better and cheaper public transport for the young and protection for young LGBT people.

At the end of the day MYPs voted to promote the Curriculum for Life campaign and remain committed to continue the Votes@16 initiative. Curriculum

for Life addresses improvements to education in PSHE, sex and relationship education, finances and politics. The day was chaired by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon John Bercow.

Road salting is carried out in order to assist the safe movement of highway users in conditions of snow and ice.

Resources are not available to treat all roads. Criteria have been used that meet national guidelines to enable the Pre-Salting Network to be defined.

This has been done to ensure a consistent approach across the county and achieve a responsible balance between cost and level of service.

The criteria used to define the routes are listed below in order of importance.

If collections are missed, crews aim to make a return pick-up as soon as possible.

All recycling sites take household waste, including excess materials, such as cardboard, but check if open before travelling. Please assist vulnerable neighbours.

Rise in vehicle crime THE latest Avon and Somerset Police crime figures show a

sharp rise in vehicle crime in Wells. There were 16 instances of vehicle crime reported to police in October compared to nine the month before.

Overall, there were 83 crimes reported to police in October, 19 fewer than in September.

by Somerset County Council running for three months to encourage victims of domestic abuse to seek help, and for friends and family to be vigilant and call for advice about concerns they may have over someone they fear may be in an abusive relationship.

Awards accolade WELLS is in the running to be named Coach Friendliest Destination in Britain. It has been named as a finalist in the category for the 2018 British Coach Tourism Awards.

In celebration of snowdrops

Tulip feature of new art lecture

THE Bishop’s Palace is to hold its first ever Snowdrop Celebration in the new year.

A special weekend in February will celebrate an array of snowdrops on display throughout the Gardens.

The Snowdrop Walk will lead visitors past the moat banks carpeted with snowdrops and across the Willow Bridge to the arboretum full of different varieties of the flower.

To complement the Gardens, there will be a selection of snowdrop-themed stalls in the Stable Yard Room, with snowdrop art, gifts and a selection of common and rare varieties of snowdrops on offer to visitors to buy and take home to their own garden.

The Snowdrop Celebration, included with standard admission, will take place on February 24 and 25, from 10am4pm.

The following month, the

ART historian Joanna Cobb resumes her lecture series History of Art: The Bigger Picture this month.

The fourth lecture in the series, Judith Leyster ‘Tulip’. Politics, trade, art and contradiction in the Dutch Golden Age, will take place at Dinder Village Hall on Monday, January 8, at 7.30pm.

The cost is £8 per person or £15 for two to include an illustrated lecture, refreshments and handouts.

“The series continues until November and can be joined at any time, so no problem if you have missed previous lectures and no obligation to book the whole series,” said Joanna.

Palace will be holding a Rare Plant Fair. Visitors will be able to browse more than 20 stalls of rare and unusual plants from a selection of top nurseries from across the South West.

Last year’s Plant Fairs were very popular, attracting more than 1,000 visitors.

Now in their 24th season, Rare Plant Fairs, run by Teresa and Ian Moss, offer enthusiasts the opportunity to buy interesting and unusual plants from a range of nurseries.

The admission fee for the Fair, on March 11, is £6 and offers a reduction on the normal entry price for the Palace & Gardens and includes full access to the Plant Fair and the rest of the site.

The nurseries that exhibit are chosen to offer the widest possible range of plants to visitors, including perennials, shrubs and trees, alpines, bulbs and exotic plants.

Return of Large Blue butterfly and other conservation stories THE National Trust is probably best known for its role in managing large country houses and their contents for public viewing. But as well as its heritage mansions and country estates, they also manage large areas of open countryside across Somerset. These include a wide variety of habitats from coastal areas to well-known inland sites such as Cheddar Gorge.

Ian Clemmett, the National Trust’s lead ranger for Somerset’s coast and countryside, will discuss this in a Somerset Wildlife Trust talk at Wells and Mendip Museum.

He will look at what is out there and show how the National Trust attempts to balance single species nature conservation against habitat management, landscape and public expectations, and in so doing manage important and sometimes difficult decisions.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS LIONS AFTER a hectic Christmas, with a sell-out concert and several street collections which raised more than £3,000 for local charities and good causes, Wells Lions have a bright and active start planned for 2018, with two major events already underway.

On Thursday, January 25, in partnership with The Swan Hotel, the Lions are staging The Big Breakfast - a networking opportunity for all local business leaders to meet together socially, over breakfast, and to learn more about the voluntary work of Wells Lions. The event will run from 7.30am-10.30am.

A highlight of the event will be a talk given by a surprise inspirational guest speaker.

Tickets are £10 each and restricted to 90 people. The Lions are hoping that local businesses will take tables of 10 and invite their own guests to enjoy this social event. It is expected to become an annual event, kickstarting each new year.

Wells Lions is now the fastest growing voluntary service organisation in the community, having more than doubled its numbers in 2017. WELLS & DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB TO kick off the new season at Wells Gardening Club the first meeting will be an evening of mid-winter pleasures.

There will be a Grand Quiz on a variety of gardening trivia and know-how with prizes, a festive table of refreshments, a chance to join or renew membership, a look at the programme of talks and visits for 2018, as well as much friendly chat. All this with free admission and a welcome to members and visitors alike.

The visitors expressed the view that the show was spectacular and that they had never witnessed anything like it.

During the course of the weekend, the Bad Durkheim twinners were taken on tours of Wookey Hole Caves, Wells Cathedral, Wells and Mendip Museum, The Bishop’s Palace and the Town Hall. On the Sunday there was a buffet lunch in the Town Hall attended by over 100 people comprised of most of the city council, twinners and other guests.

Coincidentally it was Burgermiester Glogger’s birthday, therefore the lunch, in addition to promoting twinning, morphed into a birthday party with balloons, decorations and music supplied by Sarah Chant.

Burgermeister Christoph Glogger, Mayor of Wells John North and Wells Twinning Association chairman Richard Hibberd all spoke about the importance of twinning and how successful the weekend had been in terms of cementing the relationship between Wells and Bad Durkheim.

Following the presentation made to the council in July, Richard Hibberd, treasurer Bob Reynolds and secretary Dawn Payne met with the mayor, Councillor John North, mayoress Gail North, deputy mayor Celia Wride and councillors Colin Price, Danny Unwin and Gordon Wilson to discuss the future of twinning in Wells and the relationship between the city council, Wells’ twin towns and the twinning association.

A very positive discussion was held which resulted in the mayor agreeing to prepare a

paper to put before the council to formalise the relationship and develop a joint approach to planning activities with our twin towns. It is hoped that this draft will be finalised and put before the council early in 2018.

The committee are currently in discussion with our twin towns to formulate plans for 2018 and will communicate these once they are finalised.

There will be a short AGM followed by the guest speaker, the Very Rev John Davies, the Dean of Wells, who will talk about ‘The Role of the Dean in the City of Wells’.

Members and non-members are very welcome.

WELLS FLORAL ART SOCIETY WELLS Floral Art Society celebrates its 65th year with a new name. However, we meet at the same place, St Thomas’ Church Hall, Wells, at the same time, 2.15pm. Our demonstrator at the meeting on January 9 is Beverley Clay from Cardiff and her intriguing subject is Men, Me, Flowers.

Jenny Jones WELLS WI AT our December meeting, members enjoyed mulled apple juice, mince pies and Christmas music while decorating wreaths made from withies and dogwood grown in our secretary’s garden.

People brought greenery, holly, mistletoe and ivy to share and, by the time everyone had added their own baubles and bows, we had dozens of different wreaths to hang on our doors.

The programme for 2018 was distributed. Among the things we will be hearing about in meetings next year are growing flowers; auctions; sugar craft; recycling; and wills, trust and probate. To avoid further diary pressure in the busy Christmas period, we will be going out for a New Year dinner at the Cheese Yard Cafe in West Horrington in January.

The next meeting will be

on Tuesday, January 9, at 7.30pm (not the first Tuesday of the month this time) at the Mendip and Wells Museum.

We will discuss the shortlist of five potential WI campaigns for 2018; the Skip Man will be talking about his lifetime of collecting; we will recycle any unwanted gifts (especially cookery and household items); and there will be a quiz. Annual subscriptions will also be due.

New women will be welcome to join us in the New Year.

Coach pleased with squad’s development Four months into the football season, Shaka Moody asks coach Tony Crook for his views on the performance so far of Wells City FC under 18s WELLS City’s under 18s side have started well in the league this season, sitting in fifth place after playing six games.

I spoke with the team’s coach and manager Tony Crook.

Crook has been part of the Wells City FC youth development since 2001 and is a respected member of the local football community.

To what would you attribute the team’s positive start to this season?

Crook: The mix of experienced 18-year-olds, plus obviously outstanding coaching! [He laughs.] You need good players in the Somerset Floodlit League, the quality of the teams is very high and we have to match them.

Our goal is to stay in the Premier division because it is the best league for them. Many of the younger players have made their mark already. They don’t look out of place at training, and after getting past the nerves of games they don’t look out of place at all.

How is the overall team spirit of the side?

Crook: The team’s spirit is good, especially during the first month, September was very good thanks to some good results. October wasn’t bad, we had a good run in the FA Youth Cup; we won three games to get there and then went to the fourth round and lost to Eastleigh. The team spirit was good and the quality of football was good, we usually play on the floor. We don’t tend to go long and we play through the thirds, trying to get everyone on the ball. When we do that we are a difficult team to play against.

What is the most rewarding

aspect of coaching and managing the team?

Crook: To see the pleasure the lads get from it and also for me seeing them play for the senior teams. One of the highlights of last year was on the last day of the season for Wells City Reserves eight of the starting 11 were then under 18s.

As a current member of the under 18s squad I would agree with Tony’s assessment of how the team has performed, and appreciate the amount of time and effort he and the other coaches have put in during the season. We look forward to the rest of the season.
