Host of exciting new events coming to city A RANGE of exciting new events are being lined for Wells in 2018.

They include a beer and cider festival, a Party in the Park, and a stone carving festival.

All are centred on The Bishop’s Barn and have been chosen as the winners of the Into the Barn scheme 2018.

FARMER Mike Phelps has submitted plans for a new hand car wash in Wells.

The car wash would be sited on unused land at Palace Farm. Mike says it will be professionally operated, and if all goes smoothly, it will open in the spring. “I think it would be a much-needed facility for Wells after losing our old car wash in Princes Road,” said Mike.

The application submitted to Mendip District Council is for the change of use of agricultural land to an open car wash and the provision of a tensile canopy and amenity container.

Access to the car wash would be from the Southover end of Silver Street.

Proposed opening hours are 9am-6pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am-4pm on Sundays.

Good causes share SOUP funds SOMERSET Area Cruse Bereavement Care walked away with £350 at the latest SOUP charity event organised by Wells Independents.

Local Cruse chair Patricia Manchip’s four-minute pitch was persuasive enough for the audience in the Seager Hall to vote that Cruse should win the lion’s share of the money.

Somerset Sight, Wells Little Theatre and the City of Wells Almshouses all left with £118.

Money contributed by those who attended, who each paid £5 for a soup lunch, was matchfunded by estate agents GTH to provide the overall fund for distribution.

The soup was made by 21 Cafe and Kitchen from ingredients supplied by Waitrose, the bread came from Burns the Bread, fowers were from Micky at the market and Morrisons supplied the soft drinks and beer and Santé the wine.

The fire at The Mews, Bath Road, and its aftermath

Fire probably caused by candle A CANDLE is believed to have caused the fire that gutted a house in The Mews, Bath Road, in January.

Fire crews from Wells, Shepton Mallet and Frome spent more than two hours battling the blaze in the mid-terrace property that left one person needing hospital treatment for burns.

“We believe the most likely

cause to be a candle,” said a Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service spokesman.

Fire service advice about candles includes keeping them away from furniture and curtains, never leaving burning candles unattended, and always putting candles and tea lights out and leaving them to cool down before trying to move them.

Phone box may house defibrillator WELLS City Council is hoping to turn an old telephone box into the home for a defibrillator.

The council is looking into options to adopt the disconnected red telephone kiosk at the junction of Wookey Hole Road and Goodymoor Avenue; BT has issued a draft contract for the council to adopt the box at a nominal price of £1.

The proposal is to then transfer it to a location in the Market Place where it could house a defibrillator for public availability.

“There are various permissions and technical matters to investigate before the project can progress to the next stage,” said a council spokesperson.

Passing on messages from spirit world PSYCHIC medium Hayley Thompson will be passing on messages to people from their dead loved ones at a special event in Wells in May. The evening of mediumship is being held at The Britannia Inn on Bath Road to raise funds for Gorgons Carnival Club, which is based at the pub.

Up to 100 people can attend the event, where Hayley will channel messages from the spirit world to the audience.

“I let spirit do the work and I will start by giving what I am hearing, seeing and feeling, and then it should relate to someone random in the audience evidentially who will then raise their hand and I will proceed to connect with their loved one,” said Hayley.

Hayley said that she has been aware of her mediumistic ability for about five years.

“It all really came out of nowhere, with regards to things that had started to happen after I had said or thought they were going to happen,” she said.

“It was these moments that led me to go on a journey of discovery, realising that I could deliver evidential messages to people from their deceased loved ones.

“However, everyone has their own opinion with regards to what mediums and psychics are capable of and I completely respect that. What we do though, or at least the ones that I have come across, is work with love and light, and the sheer hope and

New primary school confirmed SOMERSET County Council has confirmed that it intends to build a new school in Wells.

The seven-class primary school will be built on land at the Bovis Homes Priory Fields development off Wookey Hole Road, subject to planning approval.

The county council has said it plans to build 24 new or replaced and expanded schools around the county over the next seven to ten years to meet the demand for places from the growing numbers of children and young people.

If approved, the first phase of the building programme will eventually cost more than £140 million over the next four years – thought to be the biggest sum of money ever invested in Somerset’s schools.

“The time is right to borrow at ultra-low rates for the right building programme and who can argue that investing in our children’s future is not the right thing to do,” said council leader David Fothergill. u Bovis Homes plan deferred, page 4

“I’ve never seen a medium before, it’s all new to me,” said organiser Claire Taylor, a member of Gorgons CC. “Some people who’ve lost people find it comforting. I lost my mum six years ago and I believe in spiritual things but I hope she doesn’t give me any messages because I’ll probably burst into tears.”

‘Come up with more answers’, Bovis told A DECISION on whether to approve plans for more than 200 new homes at the Priory Fields site on Woookey Hole Road has been deferred.

Councillors on Mendip District Council’s planning board unanimously decided that they need more information before determining the Bovis scheme.

Issues raised at the meeting included the travel plan, the amount of affordable housing, the landscaping arrangements and infrastructure provision.

Outline planning permission was granted for 160 homes at the site in 2014. Bovis Homes now want to build 203 homes.

Nichola Amos, secretary of the Wookey Hole Residents’ Association, told the board that residents had raised 15 points about the revised plan. In the time allocated at the meeting, the two objections she raised were parking on Priory Fields – she said that there was not enough parking provision for residents and visitors – and the effect on wildlife.

Wookey Hole resident Roger Hancock said that Wookey Hole Road was already very busy without the extra traffic that the development would generate.

He said that the travel plan associated with the development was out of date, and said: “It’s a very, very busy thoroughfare.

It is single lane due to parked vehicles in two places. Accidents happen, near misses are frequent and cars are written off.”

The site on which Bovis Homes hopes to build 203 new homes Councillor Jim Reeves, vicechairman of St Cuthbert Out Parish Council, also said that the travel plan was out of date.

He said that the 67 bus service was now restricted and its longterm future uncertain, and that without such a bus service there would be more car journeys instead.

For Bovis Homes, David Russell said that of the 203 homes, 51 would be affordable homes. He also pointed out that householders would receive travel vouchers, there would be cycle storage, and there would be electric car charging points.

But councillors decided that they were not ready to come to a decision.

Councillor Damon Hooton said that the travel plan should be looked at again if there had been changes to the bus service, and he also expressed concerns

about visitor parking.

“My biggest bugbear is that there is no social housing,” he added. “We have a moral and legal duty to provide housing for people in need. We need social housing.”

Councillor Nigel WoollcombeAdams said that the level of affordable housing in Wells is set at 40 per cent, so suggested that 40 per cent of the additional 43 homes should be affordable. “As a community we’ve got to come away with something from this,” he said.

Councillor Tom Killen said: “I think we all accept the principle of the site being developed.

People say where are these people going to work? The issue we have is businesses saying where are we going to get staff?

We’ve got to provide housing.

“Infrastructure is a massive issue on new developments. We

must make sure infrastructure is provided and we must go back to health care providers and so on and make sure we’re getting that right.

“I’m really disappointed that the traffic report assumes that all traffic will go into Wells.

Wookey Hole has been ignored completely as has Deer Leap leading up to Priddy. A lot of these people could be working in Bristol and going the other way.

“We’ve got to get it right. I urge us to defer this and ask the developer to come up with more answers.”

Councillor Ros Wyke said she wanted to understand how children would get to school.

“This is a town site. We should have pedestrian access into town.”

She also shared concerns about infrastructure. “There does need to be new housing but I think sometimes we need to stand back and look at the bigger picture. Wells is getting all this new housing. Has it got the infrastructure? We look at these things piecemeal. We need to understand as a council the impact all this housing is having on the infrastructure.”

Councillor Danny Unwin said: “We need development but we need to get it right. I would want to go along with deferment. Let’s get it right.”

Councillor Mike Pullin agreed, and made this plea to Bovis Homes: “If we defer this, please come and talk to us.”

Housebuilder disappointed but ‘will continue to engage’ BOVIS Homes say that the Priory Fields development will help to address a housing need in the area and bring a variety of other benefits, and that they are disappointed by the deferral.

A spokeswoman for the company said: “The detailed planning application delivers 11 more homes designated as affordable housing for local people currently unable to access the housing market. There are also 32 more private market homes included in the detailed plans.

“These properties help to address the identified shortfall of

smaller family properties in the area and boosts the local market, providing more opportunities for local people to get on or move up the housing ladder, while not significantly impacting on traffic or taking up any more space.

This delivery of smaller family homes is consistent with the Mendip District Council’s Local Plan and housing need.

“Other benefits include a fully serviced site for a primary school, three play areas, landscaped public open spaces, which will involve the planting of 280 trees, and communal areas of which the long-term maintenance will

be secured by a management company. It will also contribute towards the sustainability of the local bus service.

“The plans have been carefully designed to create an attractive location, with a network of cycle ways and footpaths to ensure the school remains well connected and encouraging sustainable travel.

“Delivery of the 152 private homes, 51 affordable properties and school site together with all of this associated infrastructure will also bring an economic boost and jobs to the area, and we will continue to engage with

all parties to ensure a successful outcome for the community.

“Outline planning for the development was granted in 2014 and we are committed to working with the local authority and members of the community to deliver these much-needed homes, infrastructure and facilities.

“Our detailed planning application has been under consideration for more than a year by the council and has been recommended for approval by the council’s planning officer, so we were naturally disappointed by the recent deferral.”

Concern about threat to green spaces COUNCILLORS are concerned about loss of green space in Wells as a result of proposals in the draft Mendip Local Plan (II).

Public consultation is currently under way about the plan, which designates where building can take place and where there should be open space, and which was discussed at a Wells City Council planning committee meeting on January 18.

Committee members are concerned that areas they had asked to be designated as protected open space – such as the Athletic Ground, the rugby ground and the area around the leisure centre – have not been listed as such.

“We have very little green space. All we have is the Athletic Ground and the rugby ground and it seems to be under threat from Mendip,” said Councillor Norman Kennedy.

“If we lose just one where are the green spaces going to be?” asked Councillor Gordon Wilson.

space any more we’re stoking up tension and problems. People have got to go not too far from their front door. Preserving these trumps any development.”

Councillor Maureen Brandon said: “When my friends and I grew up I don’t know what we would have done without our open spaces. I don’t know what our life would have been like.

We just would have been on our roller skates making a nuisance of ourselves around town.”

Under the plan’s proposals, up to 120 homes could be built at land off Bubwith Walk; up to 60 homes at the rugby ground; up to 25 homes as part of mixed use scheme to include residential and employment uses at Tincknells, Strawberry Way; and up to 100 homes on land off Elm Close, designated as a Future Growth Area to be developed after 2024/25.

The redevelopment of the rugby ground for housing is linked to the relocation of the club to a new site at Haybridge.

Their concerns included access problems because of parked cars in the vicinity, the impact on wildlife and fears about contamination and odour from the sewage treatment plant.

Emergency access a cause of unease A PROPOSAL to knock down 12 garages and replace them with four two-bedroom homes and four three-bedroom homes on land to the north of 32 to 36 Balch Road was discussed at the planning meeting.

Lee Wright, consulting agent for applicants Aster, told the committee: “There’s an acute need for this size of property.”

He explained that the plan involved taking up part of the back gardens of existing properties, and said that the new homes would be fitted with sprinklers because the narrowing of the road could make it difficult for the fire service to deal with any potential incidents.

“I feel slightly uncomfortable about it. I think that fire access is of concern,” said Councillor Gordon Wilson.

The committee asked if a decision on the application could be postponed while they await a report on the issue from Somerset County Council Highways.

residency in the barn exploring the possibilities of a new sitespecific community musical performance. The event will also include an illustrated talk and demonstration by Helen following a six-week artists’ residency she has just completed in Sri Lanka and Melanie will perform a solo show she has just premiered in Denmark. n The barn will also act as a hub for family friendly events as part of Wells Comedy Festival combining a box office for the festival, bar, food offerings, music, and craft activities for children.

Trustees are also in discussion with several other theatre companies and organisations keen to work within the barn, a Grade I listed building built as a tithe barn in the 15th century.

As well as raising up to £2,600 for The Bishop’s Barn development fund, the scheme should provide some important cultural and community opportunities in Wells.

Councillor John Parham, chair of the Wells Recreation Ground Trust, which has responsibility for the Recreation Ground, including The Bishop’s Barn, said: “This is a great opportunity for Wells and one we hope will be embraced by the community and bring new life, ideas and events to rejuvenate a building already rich with a great history.”

The barn and grounds have a rich history of community endeavour and enterprising

activity – in the Seventies Blue School student Gordon Poole began his international programming career in the barn brining Slade, Status Quo, Supertramp and many other groups to the barn.

This programme of events also serves to raise awareness of the barn and facilities and test out future events. Wells Recreation Ground Trust is currently in the process of applying to Heritage Lottery Fund for redevelopment and renovation of the barn and grounds and putting forward a business and funding plan demonstrating local partnerships and community commitment to the barn.

Wells Recreation Ground Trust would also welcome applications from community groups interested in running event as part of Wells Bandstand Festival in 2018. The charity which convened this programme, Superact, went into liquidation last year so trustees are keen to hear of any music or community groups interested in continuing this venture.

August 2018 also marks the 130th anniversary of the celebration event thanking Bishop Lord Arthur Hervey for his gift – giving the Recreation Grounds and Bishop’s Barn to the people of Wells as a space for recreation and amusement.

His intention was particularly to provide a community space for those families without access to gardens – trustees would be keen to hear from any groups interested in running an event to mark this anniversary and perhaps recreate some of the original event which included a giant tug-of-war, stalls and games.

“We have been thrilled with the range of proposals the community has put forward for the barn and grounds in 2018 which highlight just what an important space it is for people to come together,” said Louise Lappin-Cook, project development manager for The Bishop’s Barn.

THE owner of one of the shops shutting in Wells says that they are the victims of cut-price competition in the city.

Present Company in the Market Place will close in the middle of February after 24 years of trading.

Owner Alison Rickards said: “We’ve come to the end of our lease and don’t feel we can renew it.

“We’ve been affected by all the heavy discount competition that has come into town.

“Everybody loves a bargain.

We’ve always been keen on price but we can’t compete with the

likes of What! – or if it becomes Wilko – and The Works.”

Alison says it is a problem in Wells that she doesn’t face with her other shops in Sherborne and Wimborne, which are doing well.

“We have a good range and people like our range, but people’s shopping patterns have changed,” she said.

“Retailers are having a very hard time at the moment.

“We shall be very sad to leave Wells. It’s been a tough decision.”

Five people will lose their jobs as a result of the store closure.

The Intersport Tony Pryce store in Wells High Street will also close when the lease comes to an end in mid-March.

Owned by the Tony Pryce chain for about 10 years, it has been a sports shop for 29 years, and employs six staff.

Wells manager James Willmott says all of the Tony Pryce stores around the West Country are due to close as buying habits change.

“It’s the economic downturn affecting the whole business, it’s not sustainable any more,” he said.

“It’s the way the market is going, everyone seems to be purchasing online.

“It will be sad that there won’t be a sports shop in Wells.”

He added: “The price of the rents and rates don’t help small businesses in towns like this.”

The Cinnamon Corner arts and crafts shop in Priory Road has already shut its doors.

Friendships forged at fun choir sessions NEW friends are being made at a new choir that has started in Wells.

The Wells Good Afternoon Choir was launched in January

by Grenville Jones, who runs a number of similar choirs in the region.

Sessions are held on Tuesday afternoons at St Cuthbert’s Church and more than 100 people turned up for the first one.

“People are really enjoying it,” said Grenville.

“Singing in the afternoon is fun for people but it’s also an opportunity to make friends.

Friendships are being made and it’s very rewarding to see that.”

He said that a lot of couples have attended the two sessions held so far, and that those who go along are appreciating the social aspect of getting out and meeting other people.

Grenville is currently appearing as one of the ‘100’ judges on the new BBC1 Saturday night talent show All Together Now. The panel of invited judges, which also includes former Spice Girl Geri Horner, choose two winners each week to go forward to sing for a £50,000 prize in the sing-off final on March 3.

“It’s a great series and certainly different from all the other TV talent and singing shows. The format of judging by a large group representing all types of music and entertainment makes for some fascinating viewing,” said Grenville.

Goldies members enjoying their sociable singalongs AN award-winning charity that addresses isolation through its fun daytime singalongs wants to reach out to more people in Wells.

The Golden-Oldies, or Goldies as it is more fondly known, launched 11 years ago in and around Bath and Bristol with just four sessions.

This has grown to over 160 across the South West, South Wales, Essex, the Midlands and North Yorkshire. New sessions starting in Exeter, Liverpool and

Cornwall later this year will see the total reach 200.

Goldies sing-a-longs have been taking place in Wells since July 2015 and at the start of this year moved to a new venue, the Elim Connect Centre.

The organisation is inviting anyone else who likes to sing the popular hits of the Fifties onwards to join them on the third Friday of every month from 1.30pm-2.30pm. The next sessions will be on February 16 and March 16.

Golden-Oldies taking part in a singalong Goldies asks for a voluntary donation of £2 per person to attend a session.

Founder Grenville Jones, the well known choir leader, said it is not about singing in a choir.

“We simply try to give people something that they can look forward to each month. A reason to get out and enjoy being with others, making friends, singing and smiling. We know that for thousands, Goldies is now a very important part of their lives,” he said.

Other groups already run monthly in Shepton Mallet, Frome and Street.

Goldies is seeking volunteers to help with tea and coffee making and other practical jobs, and asks people interested to call 01761 470006 for more information.

VISITORS to Wells Little Theatre’s pantomime in December will have noticed one big difference to their theatre experience.

New seating has been installed throughout the auditorium as part of an ongoing programme of improvement works at the venue.

The previous seats were installed in the early 1990s and were second-hand from the Bath Theatre Royal. They were looking very tired, worn out and were in many cases becoming uncomfortable.

The all-new seats were specially made for the theatre and fitted just before the pantomime and should last for many years to come.

A fundraising campaign has now been launched to help recoup some of the £36,000 cost of the new seating.

Library to host Fairtrade displays THERE will be a display of Fairtrade goods in Wells Library during Fairtrade Fortnight from February 26 to March 11.

There will also be a display of work by pupils at St Cuthbert’s Junior School on Fairtrade bananas.

For the entire Fairtrade Fortnight, children of all ages will be able to go into the library

Couple spearhead phone mast opposition THE couple who live closest to the proposed Vodafone mast in Whiting Way are leading a campaign to oppose it.

And John and Judith Buckland say that if they cannot stop the base station from being built then they will sell their home in Portway Avenue.

“If it goes up my husband and I feel that we have no choice but to move,” said Judith.

“There are potential health implications, and it will interfere with the enjoyment of our property.

“Children, the elderly and those with existing medical conditions are particularly vulnerable to the type of microwave radiation used. With underlying health issues in our family, that is of great concern.

“The proposed mast is huge and completely out of proportion with its surroundings. It will prevent people from enjoying their gardens and their homes as the mast will dominate the skyline and be visible from many properties and gardens.”

Judith and John have started an online petition, leafleted neighbours about the issue, and set up a stall one Saturday on the pavement outside Waitrose, where the 15m-high mast would go up, to raise awareness among passers-by.

Progress made in attracting more coach visitors to Wells VISIT by Coach director Ian Jefferies says the work that his organisation has done to attract more visitors to Wells has made a real difference.

He says it has been helped by the co-operation between so many groups in the city.

Visit by Coach is coming to the end of a two-year contract to increase the number of coach visitors to Wells and improve their experience once here.

Ian said that 126 coaches visited Wells in 2016, but the aim is to increase this to 1,000 a year.

In the last quarter, the Meet and Greet teams who welcome visitors at the bus station recorded 246 coaches.

“The main thing is getting processes in place and improving everything about group travel in Wells, so that Wells is a great place to visit and that visitors return,” said Ian. “It is a beautiful place that is warm, friendly, has culture, good shopping, and everybody working together and pulling together.

“It’s all joining up, and if they can continue that and push it on, the visitor intake to Wells could be huge.”

One new initiative to tempt coach companies is free entry to films at Wells Film Centre for drivers during their stay, while planters are about to be installed at the bus station as part of efforts to smarten it up.

Sewing lessons being launched STARTING in February, Cloth will be running a variety of sewing lessons from beginners basics to pattern drafting, alterations and fitting.

“If you’ve ever wanted to learn the art of making your own clothing, or you just want to upskill for a new hobby or project, come in and see me,” said Carolyn Partleton, who runs the clothing, interiors and antiques shop in Broad Street, Wells, with her husband David.

“I am more than happy to adapt classes to accommodate people’s needs,” she said.

More classes will be added in March, and several weekend workshops.

“You could have them trained

in first aid, they could spot anti-social behaviour. It could develop into a really useful, helpful role,” said Ian. The Visit by Coach contract is due to come to an end in July, and whether it is renewed or not, Ian hopes that the work will continue.

“We’ve made a difference. It could be that the sky’s the limit if you want it to be – there’s so much more that could be done,” he said. “I hope the people of Wells get together and make sure it is done.”

New mental wellbeing intiative A NEW service has been launched to support good mental health in Somerset. Somerset County Council is introducing the Somerset Mental Wellbeing Service (SMWS) in partnership with Compass Disability Services.

It will help people maintain and improve their mental wellbeing by developing

support networks, increasing independence and helping them make use of support in their communities.

Wellbeing Navigators will assist people to achieve their own goals and help them develop skills and strategies to continue to manage their own wellbeing outside of the service. Cabinet

Classes to help beat back pain NEW Pilates classes have been launched at the Pilates Body Aligned Studio in Market Street, Wells.

These include two beginners classes on Mondays at noon and 2pm and a beginners class on Wednesdays at 1pm. There is also a new Yoga/Pilates fusion class on Thursdays at 4.15pm.

Pilates is an effective way of helping back pain through gentle exercise.

“A large number of research studies have shown that exercise is a very good method of reducing back pain. Advice on ways to increase wellbeing WELLS Jobcentre has organised an event aimed at improving the physical and mental health of people in the community.

Nearly 30 organisations will be at the Health & Mind Matters event in Wells Town Hall in February offering suggestions on ways to increase wellbeing.

Worklessness among local communities is known to be leading to isolation and an increase in mental and physical health issues. This not only affects those out of work but also their families and support networks.

Keeping busy increases wellbeing and self-esteem and can help support people through these difficult times. As a result, the Jobcentre is holding an event which brings together organisations which can offer support such as Mind and Heads Up, but also will feature selfhelp, healthy eating, wellbeing and hobby groups.

There will be demonstrations as well as displays of information.

The aim is to not only make the local community aware of the wide variety of support available in this area but also to bring together all of the organisations for networking and joined up working.

Enouragement to get more active SOMERSET Activity & Sports Partnership (SASP) is one of the organisations that will be attending the Health & Mind Matters event on February 2.

Problem-solving in time of big changes I AM the neighbourhood policing sergeant for Mendip West.

This means that I work with the dedicated beat officers and PCSOs of Street, Glastonbury and Wells, as far west as Draycott and as far north as Charterhouse.

I’ve been in this position for the last two years and I’ve spent my 18-year career on East Somerset and predominantly in the Mendip area, which is also where I live.

Policing has changed dramatically in my time and particularly over the last few years, when budgets have been stretched massively, as have those of the other public services.

Therefore, we’ve had to change and adapt with it.

The ability to have a ‘bobby on the beat’ is now rare, although PC Darren Pearson does his very best to get out on foot, whenever the time allows, and PC Stuart Ball has taken over from Lucy Bagnowiec, looking after the

Stuart started this month and has hit the ground running, having already arrested someone for driving whilst disqualified and catching two poachers on land near Charterhouse. They are also often called upon to assist our colleagues on response teams in answering and dealing with urgent and immediate calls.

Stuart, Darren and I are spending a lot of our time working with partner agencies and problem-solving the issues that are going on. These range from the obvious issues of antisocial behaviour in parks, car parks and neighbourly disputes etc, to the not so obvious safeguarding children, domestic violence victims, modern day slavery, drug supplying and mental health issues.

The list is endless, but more than ever we are working closely with our partner agencies such as Mendip District Council, housing associations, schools, social services and mental health practitioners.

Sometimes the work of PCSOs is overlooked but their role is such an important one too – they more than anyone are the public face of Avon and Somerset Police and crucial to building and sustaining the confidence of our communities in our ability to keep you safe.

live, you can find us at https:// www.avonandsomerset.police. uk/your-area/) As far as what has been happening locally, well in the early hours of January 11 there was a ‘ram-raid’ style burglary at the front of the Superdrug store in the city. A large quantity of perfumes and aftershaves were stolen. I would encourage anyone to report anything seen or if anyone knows of any ‘too good to be true’ offers on such items.

Vehicles continue to be attacked in Wells, albeit not in great numbers and in no specific locations. Normally overnight, and often workers’ vans are targeted for tools that can be sold on. These can be hard to track but we often recover property that we know is stolen but cannot trace it back to an owner.

I would encourage professionals to firstly, not leave expensive and essential tools in a vehicle overnight, but I appreciate that people do, so secondly, please make efforts to keep records of serial numbers of items. This helps us greatly when it comes to returning property to its rightful owners and proving the items are indeed stolen.

Operation Tonic sees 146 arrested AVON and Somerset Police arrested 146 people for drink and drug driving in December as part of the Christmas Operation Tonic road safety campaign.

Of those arrested, 78 people have been charged and a further 40 have been released under investigation. The highest reading recorded during the campaign was 151 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 ml of breath, which is nearly four times the legal limit.

Superintendent Andy Williams, head of road safety in Avon and Somerset Police, said: “Drink/drug driving is one of the ‘fatal four’ offences which cause the majority of deaths on our roads. The people arrested in

the run up to Christmas chose to drive whilst intoxicated and were acting in an incredibly selfish and reckless manner.

“Those driving under the influence not only risk arrest but more crucially, their own lives and the lives of others.

“Unlike previous years there has been no strong common link or emerging ‘trend’ in drivers arrested. The vast majority of those arrested were over 30 years old and this could be a product of our work with young people in ensuring next generation stay safe on the road. We always promote education over prosecution where possible and use a combination of these to tackle drink-driving.”

Group hopes city can cut plastic use SUSTAINABLE Wells is hoping to make the city ‘plastic free’.

The aim is to cut down on single-use plastics in Wells so that the city can gain Plastic Free status.

“There is now a huge amount of public interest in the damaging effects of single-use plastics on the environment, especially the oceans,” said Sustainable Wells chair Maddy Milnes.

“There is also a great willingness from the public to play their part in reducing the use of single-use plastics, such as drinks bottles, straws and takeaway coffee cups.

“The scheme is based on the Fair Trade model whereby a community has to reach certain objectives to be awarded Fair Trade, or in this case Plastic Free status. There are five main objectives involving local councils, schools, businesses and community groups, which all involve reducing reliance on

single-use plastics.”

Sustainable Wells will be holding a meeting in February to discuss the action plan and would like to hear from anyone interested in being involved in this initiative. Those interested are asked to email sustwells@ gmail.com Sustainable Wells will also be at the Repair Café being held in St Thomas Church Hall on February 10 from 10am-noon, where people can discuss the issue.

Penzance in Cornwall became the first Plastic Free town in the UK just before Christmas.

The scheme is run by the environmental campaigning group Surfers against Sewage, who say that “plastic pollution is the new sewage”.

The Surfers against Sewage website explains in more detail what damage is caused by the overuse of plastics and the part everyone can play in reducing this damage.

A Blue Plaque has been unveiled at the site of a former brush factory in Portway. There were several such factories in Wells in the 19th century that seem to have originated in response to growing demands for hygiene in the dairy business. Retuning of digital boxes needed MANY television viewers in the Wells area will need to retune their digital boxes at the end of the month.

Work is being carried out on the Mendip transmitter, resulting in changes to some Freeview channels.

Three dates have been set aside for the work, which is required by the watchdog Ofcom to allow changes in bandwidth for future mobile services.

The main date for this area is February 27. The others are February 7 and March 1.

Richard McKenzie, operations manager for The Aerial Man (Dan Grace), said:

“We cannot predict what the fallout of this work will be but we can say most Freeview users will have to retune, some may have to reposition their aerial and an unfortunate few may have to have their aerials replaced.

“Naturally we are here to help with any issues people may have and we hope to have caught up with the current backlog of work to wind-damaged aerials so should be able to respond to people’s needs very quickly.”

Further changes may be made to the transmitter late next year.

Renovated hall ready for community use AFTER many months of renovation work, the Elim Connect Centre in Wells has opened a new community space.

In previous times the hall has been a gym and then a storage area.

“It’s a lovely big space with plenty of natural light that will be perfect for conferences, events, exercise classes, community groups etc,” said centre manager Sharon Edmonds.

“We are also able to provide catering with the help of our wonderful on-site catering team.

“As well as wonderful contractors, who have worked incredibly hard, many volunteers have generously given their time and skills to help us get it ready for use.”

to Hannah More who was born in Bristol in 1745, and is remembered as a poet and playwright and social reformer.

She became involved with the literary elite in London but her plays and poetry became more evangelical and she joined a group of campaigners against the slave trade working alongside William Wilberforce.

She did an increasing amount of philanthropic work in the Mendip area and started a number of schools, including Wedmore, for children living in poverty.

FORMER South West MEP Sir Graham Watson told an audience in Wells that Brexit is a “huge mistake” that is already harming the country.

In a talk at Wells and Mendip Museum, he said the economy and society were being damaged even before the UK left the European Union.

“I believe the country of which we are citizens is making a huge mistake in leaving the European Union,” said Sir Graham, who was one of the South West’s MEPs from 1994 to 2014.

“I don’t know how we can stop

Brexit. But equally, I don’t see how it can happen. It is such a nonsense that no self-respecting nation will allow it to go ahead,” he added.

“The chances of stopping it may look slim.

“But with patience and purpose and persistence we may yet bring the whole crazy idea crashing down.”

A lively question and answer session with members of the audience followed the talk, which was organised by the pro-EU European Movement Mendip Branch.

Plan to commemorate gibbet WELLS Civic Society is aiming to commemorate the gibbet that once stood at Keward.

It has applied to Mendip District Council for planning permission to site a Blue Plaque on a one metre-high plinth near the bus stop on Glastonbury Road, close to the Jocelyn Drive

junction. Among those hung on the gibbet were participants in the Monmouth Rebellion, an attempt to overthrow James II in the 17th century.

The civic society is commemorating notable people and events with a series of Blue Plaques around Wells.

Star tenor looks forward to opera and song evening LEADING young Wells-born tenor, David Butt Philip, is returning to his native city in February to take part in ‘A Night of Opera and Song’ at the Cedars Hall.

The event is being organised to raise funds for the new developments at St Thomas’s Church inWells, which were dedicated in November by the Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Rt Rev Peter Hancock.

David Butt Philip began his singing career as a choirboy at St Thomas’s Church in the late 1980s under the direction of the late Peter Thomas.

“He was an inspiration and he set me on course for the rest of my singing career,” said David.

In the last few months he has sung the role of Hamlet in a new opera of that name for Glyndebourne on Tour, as well as Gerontius in the acclaimed performance of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius at York Minster with two Hallé Choruses and the Hallé Orchestra under the baton of Sir Mark Elder.

“I’m greatly looking forward to coming home to Wells for this concert, and bringing some

supporting this excellent cause,” said David.

The concert, on Saturday, February 10, will take the audience on a musical journey from Mozart to Puccini. The other performers are Amy Carson (soprano) who sang in the Wells Oratorio Society’s December rendition of Handel’s Messiah, Tim Dickinson (bass-baritone) and Nicola Rose (piano) whose well-known organist father, Barry Rose, lives in Draycott.

“The programme for the evening will be quite varied, including a mixture of well known favourites and more unusual repertoire. Personally I’ll be using it in part to try out some new pieces of Czech and German repertoire which I’ve been working on, from operas which I’ll be performing on stage for the first time over the next couple of years,” said David.

“For me, there are very few things more enjoyable than performing great music with great friends, so this should be a huge amount of fun. The four of us have known each other for

many years. Nicki and I used to sing together in Wells Cathedral voluntary choir, almost 20 years ago.

“She and Amy were choristers together at Salisbury Cathedral even longer ago than that, and Tim - who is Amy’s husband and I were in the Glyndebourne chorus together at the very beginning of our operatic careers.”

The developments at St Thomas’s Church include the construction of a new community meeting room on the south side of the church, a new servery at the back of the church, and new lavatories which are now accessible for the disabled.

Several pews have been removed and a grand piano has been acquired.

AS a Tai Chi for Health leader, I see people arrive at my class, nervous, but needing to address their personal physical difficulties. After welcoming them and introducing myself, I explain that the gentle, flowing movements aren’t as complicated as they might seem. Due to the happy, friendly atmosphere, most persevere, albeit awkwardly. At first they might struggle, until something miraculous happens: their balance improves and even better, their sense of self-worth increases. Very few see the class as a chore, it’s a social event, which they look forward to.

We laugh, we work, they learn to relax as well as how to bring balance and harmony into their lives and bodies. Within a few weeks, the nervous newcomer is more confident and outgoing.

I personally have physical limitations, so can empathise with most difficulties. I love leading my class and am always

Heads Up, Upper Breach, South Horrington. Tel: 01749 670667 Heads Up shared how the money raised this year would benefit those who use their service as the country faces a growing problem with an ageing community and dementia.

The entertainment then bounced into action with Daniel Lealman as Trué Bublé. Daniel entertained the crowd of 70 attendees with not only hits from Bublé but that of the Rat Pack, which was thoroughly entertaining.

A total of £1,351 was raised on the evening which included a raffle.

The aim of the mayor and mayoress this year is to raise £10,000 which will be split equally between the two charities. Two future entertainment events are planned, a Casino Royale night on March 10 in Wells Town Hall, and a second tribute evening with The Complete Blues Brothers on April 21 to be held at The Swan Hotel.

Tickets for both events are on sale now and are available from the hotel.

Bubbles and Bublé make for sparkling night HEADS Up is one of the charities to benefit from the first Mayor of Wells’ charity night featuring Trué Bublé, a Michael Bublé tribute act.

Held at The Swan Hotel on January 13, the evening started with a glass of bubbles, before a delicious three-course meal.

The Mayor of Wells, John North, made a speech which was followed by representatives from the charities he is supporting during the year, Heads Up and the ATC (Air Cadets).

Daniel Fawcett, aged 15, the mayor’s cadet, spoke passionately about his experience in the cadets and why the money raised was so important in increasing enjoyment and engagement within the cadet community.

PEOPLE are enjoying the benefits of a new, free drop-in club in Wells.

The Wells Hub is open every Thursday from 10am until 3pm at Somerset Skills and Learning, Portway House, offering locals the chance to learn skills through a range of activities while meeting new people. The club is open to anybody who is interested, and there is no need to book.

The drop-in club is being offered as part of the Positive People programme, funded by the European Social Fund and the National Lottery, through the Big Lottery Fund.

Offering support and practical advice through one-toone mentoring, the Wells Hub, which opened on November 23, offers occasional workshops and presentations covering topics from health and wellbeing to digital skills as well as employment advice. Two Change Coaches and a Job Centre representative are available at the Wells Hub to offer support and guidance. Digital trainer

“Cosmic Clive” is also on hand to offer online guidance to help participants become more confident with technology.

The museum will be showcasing its facilities for conferences and events, which include a large lecture hall and a smaller meeting room.

Another Repair Café Record attempt SUSTAINABLE Wells are running another Repair Café in February.

People are invited to take along broken items to be fixed, and learn for themselves how to repair things. There will be stands illustrating how everyone can reduce waste and reuse waste, as well as books for sale.

The event takes place at St Thomas’ Church Hall, Wells, on Saturday, February 10, from 10am to noon.

RESIDENTS are being asked to take part in a world record attempt and help fund life-saving research by visiting the British Heart Foundation (BHF) shop in Wells High Street.

For Valentine’s Day, the BHF is attempting to break the world record for the longest chain of paper hearts, which currently stands at 8,525.

EXCITING young violinist Poppy McGhee thrilled concert-goers at Wells Town Hall. Poppy, aged 13, showed how talented she is when she played with the Syrinx Ensemble at a concert on January 20, one of a series being held to raise money for a keyboard or piano for the Town Hall.

Funeral director wins award FUNERAL director Rod Major has won an award for his customer service and business acumen.

Terry Buckley, regional general sales manager for funeral plans company Golden Leaves, came to Wells to present Rod with the award at his stall in Wells Market Place.

Rod is a familiar figure at the Wednesday market, where people can discuss funeral planning with him.

He has been an agent for Golden Leaves since September 2016 and has been the company’s top seller of funeral plans in the region in the past 12 months.

“He’s done fantastically well for Golden Leaves selling our funeral plans,” said Terry.

“He’s a nice bloke and has a nice way with customers.”

A creative workshop at Wells Cathedral, which is holding felt bead-making workshops in February

Lent addresses will explore how conflict shaped century 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War, a conflict that shaped the century to come in terms of theology, social practice and world politics.

A series of preachers will explore some of these themes in addresses during Lent at Sunday Evensong (3pm) at Wells Cathedral, with tea and a seminar to follow each Sunday.

The first address during Evensong is on Sunday, February 18, when the Rev Canon Rachel Mann (Canon Poet, Manchester Cathedral) will explore Poetry and the Collapse of a Culture.

Rachel’s recent book Fierce Imaginings ranges over the collapse of a culture as witnessed by the poets, soldiers and victims of the Great War. The book has been judged outstanding, and Rachel will

offer rich poetry from the period.

Further themes in the series include Women in Society, God and Islam with equally eminent speakers. More details are available on the Cathedral’s website at www.wellscathedral. org.uk. All are welcome and there is no need to book. n Two family workshops offer the chance to have a go at making felt beads from carded sheep’s fleece – at home they could even be turned into earrings or a necklace as a gift (Mother’s Day is March 11).

A SOMERSET Wildlife Trust talk on Hidden Somerset will take place at Wells Museum on February 27.

Mike Bolton is a well-known and popular local speaker having given talks all around Somerset and Dorset, with the occasional excursion to foreign parts like Devon, Wiltshire, Hampshire and North Somerset.

After a general introduction to Somerset, the audience will be starting a virtual tour at Wells before crossing part of the Levels following the course of the Glastonbury Canal and former tracks of the S&D railway. From where they can branch to up to nine other locations It promises to be a fun-filled look at parts of Somerset that many people miss – unless they manage to get out of their cars.

Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Admission to talks is £2.50 for SWT members or £3 for non-members.

STEWART Sheppard – aka The Skip Man – eased us into 2018 with a wonderfully entertaining evening, skilfully weaving together a talk, music and a quiz.

He told us about his lifelong addiction to scavenging, and showed us the beautiful violin in a case he had spotted poking out of some rubble in a skip, and a 1920s cigarette tin he rescued from a dump that turned out to be full of interesting coins, including a valuable Georgian silver shilling. While Stewart told us stories, we passed around a couple of mystery objects he invited us to identify – a small brass clip, and a cast iron tool with a ring at the end. * Stewart has been doing discos around the Bath area for long enough to have experienced crazes from Teddy Boys through Mods and Rockers to Hippies and Skinheads. These days, when doing the music for an event at a golf club, he told us he often recognises among the mature and respectable members the very young men he remembers causing havoc in their youth.

The quiz covered many decades, and included lots of music questions, such as how many number ones the Beatles had (more than we thought), and guess the year and entry price of the first Glastonbury Festival (1970, £1 and all the milk you can drink). All the laughs and

The friendly ladies of Wookey Hole WI music certainly helped banish any lingering post-Christmas blues. * The first mystery object turned out be a clip used by ladies to lift long skirts clear of mud in the streets; and the second the implement that enabled his dairy farming grandmother to lead a bull by the nose.

We discussed the shortlist of five potential WI campaigns for 2018: Positive Body Image in a Digital Age; Stop Female Genital Mutilation; End Human Slavery in the UK; Mental Health Matters and Healthier Mouth, Healthier Body. Members each voted for the one they would most like to see go forward to the next stage, and we wait to hear which one got most votes nationally. There was a small stall at which members brought along some of their less successful Christmas gifts for swapping and recycling.

Over 30 members enjoyed a New Year dinner at the Cheese Yard Café in West Horrington, got competitive over napkin folding and table decorations, and received gifts from an African Chief.

Among the things to look forward to this year are talks about growing flowers; auctions; sugar craft and recycling. The speaker is Andy Webb who led the bid for Wells to be the City of Culture, a bid which was not successful, but the work for which has led on to some positive ideas and outcomes for the future.

Twinning links stretch back to the 1970s This month’s feature explains more about the city’s twinning association and the benefits that twinning brings YOU may not be aware but Wells has a Twinning Association, a group of people who strengthen our connections with other countries and maintain a communication with them. At present we are twinned with Bad Durkheim in Germany, Parayle-Monial in France and most recently Fontanellato in Italy.

It all started back in the 1970s when we linked up with Paray-le-Monial, a small town in France which is known for its beautiful architecture and wine,

though unlike us it has a train station. It is also known as the centre for Catholic pilgrims from around the world. It was Parayle-Monial which suggested we link up with Bad Durkheim who they were also twinned with. In 1982 the three-way twinning was complete, a bit of an oxymoron but it’s the best way to describe it. Bad Durkheim in Germany is the larger of the towns though it is also known for its wine; their wine festival attracts over 50,000 visitors every September.

Completed in 2012, we finally twinned with the Italian community in Fontanellato. It was their association who offered the opportunity to twin with us,

With a beautiful moated castle and market place, it would seem we found our European match, though they also manage to produce very popular cheese and Parma ham.

Wells City Council performs official signing ceremonies to authenticate the proceedings and creates a charter. The mayor also regularly hosts the visitors from our twinned communities, welcoming them in the prestigious Mayor’s Parlour. They also head to Europe to visit their communities, attending various events they host over the year.

The relevance of being twinned is pretty simple. It

broadens our understandings of other communities and cultures, it acts as a learning opportunity for those involved, as well as being another one of those traditional values for us to enjoy. It encourages the visitors to explore the respective towns/ cities and acts as a friendship overseas. For example, the carnival, the perfect example of something for us to share as something to be proud of. It’s essentially like having a pen pal.

Regular events are held to raise funds for these visits as they do not receive a public subsidy.

Chloe doing her bit to spur women on SPORTS fan Chloe Dell would love to get more women involved in sport.

Chloe helps produce media content for Bristol City Women’s FC, and helps to operate the big screen at Ashton Gate for the men’s team’s home games.

Her love of sport developed during her time at Wells Blue School, and her interest in media evolved when she started volunteering at Glastonbury FM. “I have always loved playing hockey because of the physicality of it and it’s a real team sport,” said Chloe.

“I had great experiences of playing sport at The Blue, particularly hockey. From Year 7 until Year 12 we had pretty much the same team and teachers. It was a lot of fun and I think is a big part of why I have always loved sport. I now play for Wells City when I’m not working.

“I have also rowed for over five years too which I enjoy but it’s a pretty relentless sport, it’s very technical and no fun in bad weather.”

Chloe is a strong advocate of women’s sport and is keen for more women to get involved.

“I hope to be able to help increase the interest and participation in women’s sport,” she said.

“I think like most things it all needs to start at the grassroots level: getting girls to play football, rugby, cricket etc at primary school and then offering

a pathway for them to develop and become competitive.

“I also think as a society we need to get away from gender stereotyping sport and sport being ‘just for boys’. The more women entering a career to do with sport, the more women will hold senior roles and be in a position to get women’s sport on the map.”

Her own sporting heroes are tennis players Serena and Venus Williams. She said: “They, especially Serena, defied the norms of female athletes at the time, particularly in tennis.

She plays with aggression and phenomenal power that has set her apart from the rest. I find it frustrating when she has been described as the greatest female tennis player of all time because she is simply one of the greatest athletes of all time.

“Records and grand slams aside she has faced medical scares, numerous injuries, racism, and now well into her 30s and four months after giving birth doesn’t look like she’s about to stop.”

Chloe has been working on media content for Bristol City Women’s FC since September, after responding to an email sent by a lecturer on her journalism masters course at the University of the West of England saying that the club was looking for media interns.

Close eye on big screen at big game Here, Chloe describes what she did during Bristol City’s recent Carabao Cup semi-final second leg game at home to Manchester City.

6.15pm: Arrive at the Media Control Room. The media director discusses the running order with me and we go through the VTs to check they’re OK. 7pm: Put up first VT on big screen, derby highlights. Put up other VTs every few minutes until kick-off, interspersed with music, counting down the last 10 seconds of the VT so the DJ knows when to put the music back on. and the website, and attends matches when she can where she helps with match-day duties.

“The women’s game is becoming more professional and BCWFC are certainly working hard to achieve this,” said Chloe, who is also a freelance researcher and runner with BBC Sport Wales.

“Recent changes within the club and the changes in the WSL is making a difference in the women’s game. More matches are being shown on the BBC and media are attending the big clashes with the top teams like Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea.

The game is certainly heading in the right direction.”

“It’s very exciting and a privilege to watch games like the Man United one,” she said.

“The same with the women.

I remember when we drew away to Arsenal at the beginning of the season and also had a close home cup game against Chelsea. These are the biggest women’s clubs full of international talent so to put up a gutsy performance is always commendable.”

To relax, Chloe likes nothing better than to watch sport on TV. “I really enjoy international rugby, there’s nothing like a good Six Nations clash,” she said.

“I really get into the Olympics, both summer and winter. Every Olympics I find a niche sport I can’t stop watching, curling is a particular favourite.”
