Second Community Day being organised THE team behind the Wake Up Wells project have announced that they will be repeating the Wake Up Wells Community Day in 2020.

Following the success of Wake Up Wells in 2019, Emma Lefevre and Kirstie Harris launched a community interest company called Project Factory CIC. The aim of the company is to build stronger communities through events, projects and courses.

The Wake Up Wells Community Day 2020 will take place on September 12, and aims to maximise the benefit to all community stakeholders and optimise participation and engagement of the community so as to involve as many community groups and organisations as possible.

Famed festive lights set to dazzle again AFTER a break of several years, the famous Manning Close Christmas lights display will be back to dazzle Wells this December.

In its heyday the annual display became a festive favourite and earned Paul Toole, the man behind it, the nickname The King of Christmas Lights, and appearances on TV. Paul sold all of his display when he moved to Lancashire in 2012 to take up what he thought would be his dream job, working for a Christmas lighting company.

But he missed Somerset, and having returned home, he and his wife Nikki agreed that this year it was time for some seasonal sparkle again.

“Nikki, who’s equally as mad about Christmas as I am, decided last Christmas was the last Christmas we’d have without having some sort of display,” said Paul.

“Through the year we’ve been buying items for the display, and I think now we’ve virtually got everything we had before, if not

a little bit more. The lights won’t be sequenced to music and video this year, we’ve just not had the time to do it.

“Nevertheless, I think the display will warm people’s hearts, especially for the holidays.”

The lights will be switched on on December 1 – though without what was the traditional big ‘switch-on’ event – and will run nightly from 5pm until 9.30pm.

“The theme once again, well, it has to be a Winter Wonderland, with all the animals you could possibly imagine,” said Paul.

The display will be at 15 Manning Close, three doors up from his mother’s house where the display used to be.

Visitors will still be able to donate to charity, which this year is Glastonbury & Wells Cats Protection.

Enchanting model Christmas village A MODEL Christmas village is delighting customers and raising money at a pub in Wells.

Harry Colbourne has spent 24 hours and more than £1,000 on the display at The Britannia Inn, Bath Road, which will be there until January. His first display last year raised £500 in donations for the Royal British Legion. This year, he is raising money for the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance.

“I started a display at home and it got too big so I asked the landlord, Rob, if I could put a display in the pub and he said yes,” said Harry, who has been a regular at The Britannia for more than 30 years.

“It’s doubled in size this year.

People love it. It’s nice to see them enjoy it.

“I’d like to go even bigger next year but I might have to find a bigger venue.”

Windows on to Christmas world THIS year’s Advent Windows event in St Thomas Street will see 31 windows being opened across the 24 days of Advent.

Last year, 24 windows were opened one after the other from December 1 to 24, to reveal a Christmas scene.

There will also be a number of live events this year, with the first taking place on Day 2 – a puppet show at number 2 St Thomas Street. Puppeteers from Planet Puppet will be sharing their characters in a free 15-minute show at 5pm in the car park behind the house.

Other events during the days leading up to Christmas will include festive drinks, nibbles and chocolate.

Maps will be available at the top and bottom of the street as well as in various places around the town, and those taking part will be active on social media again.

n GENERAL ELECTION Decision day for Candidates for the Wells Constituency would-be MPs POLLING booths will be open from 7am until 10pm for voting to take place in the General Election on Thursday, December 12.

There are five candidates standing in the Wells Constituency – each has provided some information about themselves on the right.

The count will take place at the Royal Bath and West Showground.

The anticipated start time of the count is 1.30am on December 13, with the declaration of the result expected about four or five hours later.

The coming vote is a vote for so much more than we are all being told as Britain is effectively holding a gun to the EU right now, forcing their hand to sign a free trade deal.

To truly understand what is happening here we need an astronomical perspective which is what I offer here. We are being affected by Jupiter and its moons, just as Galileo saw Jupiter and its moons back in 1613. The passage past Earth occurred on the 20th January 1606 when the tsunami struck Bristol and the Somerset Levels.

The last passage was on 20th January 1939, when Carlos Ferrada predicted the passage and the earthquake that struck Chile predicting thousands would die, again on 20th January 1939. Ferrada predicted it would return in 1999. The next big transit will be around 25th January 2020.

Both Chernobyl and Fukushima occurred on the days of massive earthquakes as a result of Jupiter. The story we are told is to stop volcanoes and earthquakes spewing carbon dioxide, we have to build nuclear power stations on cracking fault lines and tsunami hot spots.

Wells, Glastonbury, the Somerset Levels and Bristol stand to be the most affected by this practice climatolgists call science.

James Heappey is running for re-election after serving as the Member of Parliament for Wells since 2015. The Conservative candidate was formerly a soldier serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland, and lives with his family near Axbridge.

Mr Heappey has focussed his work in Parliament on improving our digital connectivity as well as campaigning against unfair funding formulas which were disadvantaging our schools.

Since 2015, over 20,000 additional premises have been connected to superfast broadband and/or now enjoy 4G mobile telephone signals.

He has also secured record funding for our local schools and the implementation of a national school funding formula.

In addition, Mr Heappey has won investment in new cancer facilities and MRI scanners at our local hospitals and funding for completely new hospitals in Bath and Taunton.

Mr Heappey has chaired the leading cross-party group that promotes renewable and sustainable energy and, as such, has successfully led calls in Parliament for the introduction of legislation for Net Zero.

If re-elected, Mr Heappey has said his priorities will be the universal delivery of superfast digital connectivity, local road and rail improvements, filling vacancies in our local NHS and fighting for more cash for our sixth forms and colleges.

I have worked for the last 15 years in the social care and youth sectors, and am currently a senior manager working with young carers. I see the difference our guidance and practical help can make to their young lives – and yet my heart breaks every day because the money to provide the services they desperately need has been ruthlessly stripped.

We have seen services slashed in our communities – for families, schools and hospitals, the ill and disabled, the old and vulnerable. I have decided enough is enough: I want to challenge the career politicians and make changes at the highest level, in our Parliament and government.

As an MP, I will work for my constituents – all of them. I will work to introduce policies that will help people to transform their lives, repairing the NHS, investing in social care and providing the same personal care to people over 65 and in need that they get in Scotland.

I want to see us invest in green energy, in our infrastructure, in our homes, creating local, well-paid, skilled jobs and making education a right, not an expensive privilege.

For this – and so much more – I urge you to vote Labour.

Old Deanery under offer to private buyer NEGOTIATIONS over the purchase of the Old Deanery are taking place with a private buyer after a bidding process that invited offers for the 800-yearold building.

The Diocese of Bath and Wells is selling the Old Deanery on Cathedral Green, which it uses as offices, and moving to Flourish House at Cathedral Park.

One of the bids for the building came from a community interest company made up of people from Wells’ arts and heritage organisations, but despite extensive discussions, its bid has not been taken further, and the offer has now been withdrawn.

A spokesperson for the Diocese of Bath and Wells said: “Following its marketing earlier this year, the Old Deanery is now under offer to a private buyer.

As negotiations are continuing, we are not able to give further details at this stage.

“Extensive discussions were held with another offeror, a Wells-based community interest company, but unfortunately it was not able to demonstrate the necessary confidence in its ability to raise the funds needed to purchase the property.

“The Diocese will move its staff to a modern office in Wells in the spring of next year. The move will ensure the diocese

is able to support parishes and clergy across Somerset in an easily accessible location with lower maintenance and repair costs going forward.”

The community interest company expressed its disappointment at the failure of its bid. It said in a statement: “This week the Old Deanery Community Interest Company (CIC) was informed by Carter Jonas, one of the agents acting for the Diocese, that it has decided not to proceed with the CIC bid to buy this important Medieval building on Cathedral Green, choosing now to work with another unnamed bidder.

“The CIC is very disappointed to learn of this as only a month ago, having made an unconditional offer close to the asking price, it was the Diocese’s preferred purchaser. Over this time, it has worked extremely hard to identify and negotiate with a local heritage developer, who was willing to provide a significant part of the asking price, and with national funding agencies, who were also keen to lend their support to this exciting community initiative.

“Although it has now formally withdrawn its offer, the CIC remains interested in seeing whether the new preferred bidder is willing to work with the community to achieve its vision for the Old Deanery.”

Funds raised, and a fond farewell WELLS firm Tincknell Fuels has been raising money throughout November for Prostate Cancer UK to fund support services for those affected by prostate cancer and invest in research into the disease.

Staff have been putting their best foot forward on walking tours at lunch breaks, a walking Treasure Hunt around Wells, a Brew & Bake Day, a Bacon Butty Day, daily bingo, a Willy Wonka Chocolate Day with a delicious chocolate fountain, a Sox &

Sandals Day, and a crazy golf tournament.

All the money raised will be topped up by the company and passed on to the charity.

Tincknell Fuels is also saying farewell to its longest serving member of staff in November.

Andrew Woolley, pictured, retires on his 70th birthday after more than 53 years of service.

The company wishes him a very happy retirement, and says his witty and funny comments will be missed by everyone.

GRATEFUL patient Jim Pidgeon has celebrated his 80th birthday by asking friends and family to make donations to the hospital that has helped him so much instead of giving him presents.

Jim, from Wells, a long-term rheumatology patient and former publican at The Sherston Inn, held two birthday parties and raised over £600 for the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (RNHRD) charity, The Forever Friends Appeal.

He said: “I wanted to raise money to show my appreciation for the fabulous treatment that I have had over the years.

“When I was 18 I was a rugby player and played for the Bath RFC Colts. I had also been selected to join the Royal Marines and they requested that I represent them before I was due to join up. It was at one of these matches that I had an accident and my kneecaps

were shattered and I spent over a year in hospital undergoing operations, having intensive treatment and rehabilitation.”

Jim has suffered from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis since having the rugby accident but despite his injuries, he went on to play competitive cricket and golf and then bowls.

Jim’s 80th birthday gift will go towards enhancing the courtyard area at the back of the new RNHRD and Brownsword Therapies Centre at the Royal United Hospitals Bath.

Julie Russell, Rheumatology Physiotherapy Lead, RNHRD, said: “I have known Jim for many years. He is an engaging, larger than life character, with a very dry sense of humour.

It is entirely typical of his generosity to hold a fundraising event for his birthday and we truly appreciate and value his support.”

Presentations at celebration night THE first winners of the BA5 Awards will receive their prizes at the Wells Civic Society seasonal celebration on Wednesday, December 11.

The BA5 Awards have been launched in partnership between the Civic Society, Wells Chamber of Commerce & Tourism and Wells Voice.

Members of the public were invited to nominate people who they feel deserve an award for their work in the local community.

At the celebration, being held at Wells & Mendip Museum, five winners will be presented with a specially chosen terracotta tile made by well known Wells tile-maker Black Dog, and a certificate. Anyone who wishes to attend the event will be very welcome. It starts at 7.30pm.

Refreshments will be available, and there will be entertainment courtesy of Gert & Daisy – the infamous 19thcentury chambermaids from the Swan Hotel.

n NEWS Art to appear in empty shop

A POP-UP exhibition of life drawings and portraits is going to be appearing in an empty Wells shop.

The artworks have been created by Molly Briton and Paul Crummay and a selection of their students at Wells Art Practice, the Community Interest Company they run.

The exhibition will take place in the former Phase Eight shop at 12 Market Place, from November 30 to December 15, from 10am-3pm Tuesday to Sunday.

Admission will be free.

The art being displayed uses a range of media and is for sale.

Wells Art Practice has four drop-in classes a week and has just announced a new programme of day workshops in 2020.

It attracts a range of artists from beginner to professional level and of all ages from 17 to 77, and classes are attended by people from across Somerset.

First look at design for city’s landmark mosaic THE design has been unveiled for the giant mosaic being planned in Wells Recreation Ground.

Michael Eavis joined mosaic artist Ruth Ames-White to reveal the design in front of dozens of invited guests at the Swan Hotel.

The design incorporates 32 quatrefoils and 32 windows, each to be filled with the depiction of a person or an event of historical importance, the Moat, and a map of the city centre showing some of its key buildings.

Ruth said: “We are hugely grateful to Michael Eavis

who gave a wonderful speech before revealing a quarter size version of the design. Michael has become very interested in the project and a great encouragement. I’m really flattered that the design has met with much admiration, it’s always a nerve-wracking moment. It’s now on to the exciting fabrication stage of the mosaic.”

The Wells in Mosaic project is expected to take three years to complete, and will use about 750,000 pieces of tile.

AN election has been called to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Tony Robbins, who was a city councillor in the Wells St Thomas’ ward.

Candidates will be invited to put their names forward, with the election due to be held on February 7.

Decision deferred on 100 homes plan A DECISION on whether to allow up to 100 homes to be built on land off Elm Close, Wells, has been deferred.

Members of Mendip District Council’s planning board decided to defer a decision on the application for up to six months, to allow time to negotiate enhancements and community benefits with the applicant, Gladman.

Extra chairs had to be put out at the meeting in the Council Chamber on November 20, such was the public interest.

During discussion of the application for outline planning permission for the building of up to 100 homes at the site on the edge of Wells, a number

of councillors expressed their disquiet about the scheme.

Planning board chair Councillor Damon Hooton said that if they refused the application and the decision went to appeal, there would be less scope for dealing with the issues raised, while deferring would leave more room to bargain.

It was also pointed out that the land has already been allocated for housing in the council’s Emerging Local Plan Part 2.

Councillor Ros Wyke, who proposed the deferment, said that this was a gateway site and she was concerned about the design and quality when any houses are built. She said:

“Wells is under a huge amount of infrastructure pressure and we need to think very carefully. I would like to see this deferred and we get some more information on design, layout and approach.”

Councillor Mike Pullin – who seconded the deferment – made a similar point about the pressure on the Wells infrastructure, as did Councillor Steve Henderson.

“I’m amazed at the number of houses being built in Wells. I don’t know how they’re going to survive,” said Cllr Henderson.

Councillor Edric Hobbs said that since the houses would be on a ridge, the development would be visible for mile around. “It’s

going to be another monstrous carbuncle ruining the area. It’s not the right place,” he said.

Councillor Matt Martin pointed out that more than 200 homes are already going to be built nearby, and said: “Aren’t we hammering this site enough?”

“It doesn’t make sense to be building houses here when the employment is elsewhere,” said Councillor Lindsay MacDougall.

The vote to defer was passed by ten votes to two, with one abstention.

Among issues that councillors want to raise with Gladman are more use of renewables, funding for community facilities and public transport, highways safety and a second access to the site.

Award joy for photographer

Pyrolysis trials get green light

A LOCAL amateur photographer has received a prestigious award for her camerawork.

Rose Atkinson from Easton, near Wells, has been awarded the Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society.

She presented a panel of ten prints for assessment at the RPS’s Bristol headquarters in October.

They included an image of Vicars’ Close in Wells which was shortlisted in the 2018 Historic Photographer of the Year Awards and a photograph of a Spitfire in flight which an assessor said was “one of the best Spitfire images I’ve ever seen”.

Rose, a member of Mid Somerset Camera Club and a volunteer photographer for Somerset Wildlife Trust, said: “It has taken me nearly a year to select and prepare a panel of images for the Licentiate and I am absolutely delighted to have achieved it at my first attempt. On the assessment day in October just 50 per cent of the submissions were successful.

“I’ve been interested in photography for a long time and started taking it more seriously about ten years ago. I joined Mid Somerset Camera Club when we moved to Wells in 2016 and was inspired by others at the club to work towards a distinction.

“My camera is always at hand, even at home; and I get out and about with it as often as I can. I love the landscape around the Mendips and capturing images of people, places and events.”

PYROLYSIS research and development trials on land at the St Cuthbert’s paper mill site at Haybridge have been given the go-ahead. Somerset County Council’s Regulation Committee approved the plans by Pyrocore Ltd at a meeting in Taunton on November 7.

A number of conditions were made by the committee including a 12-month time limit.

The application went to the Regulation Committee for consideration after it was approved at a sometimes heated meeting of St Cuthbert Out Parish Council’s planning committee in July, where several residents spoke out against it, and which led to the resignation of two parish councillors.

Fundraising lunch raises record amount A CHARITY group’s annual fundraising lunch was bigger than ever this year – and raised more money than ever.

The Swan Hotel’s function room was packed to capacity for the Wells Macmillan Cancer Support Annual Fundraising & Memorial Luncheon.

One hundred and fifty diners enjoyed a two-course meal before a grand raffle with more than 70 prizes donated by local companies.

The event raised just under £4,000, a record sum.

In an address to guests, the chairman of Wells & District Macmillan Cancer Support committee, Mark Tobin, said that 22 people in the local region are diagnosed with cancer every day.

“Dealing with cancer is one of the toughest fights any of us will ever have,” he said.

“We want everybody to know they can turn to Macmillan as soon as they are diagnosed. No

Moving tribute on city’s big night out ORGANISERS of Wells City Carnival have said that it was a very successful night – and a fitting tribute to Martin Coppell, the chief marshal for 20 years, who died earlier this year.

Some of the carts turned off their lights and music and the crowd stood in silence near the start of the circuit in Martin’s memory.

“We paid homage to our old mate,” said Wells Carnival president Maurice Day. “The silence was eerie. I said a few words, and at the end of the silence a huge cheer went up and there was applause.

“It was a good occasion to remember a good carnivalite. He was there with us.”

He added: “We had a very successful night, and it all sailed through.”

Veterinary team resolve problems with Henry’s troublesome ears Veterinary Surgeon Joshua White explains how Wells Vets were able to ease the discomfort that a young Labrador was experiencing HENRY is a three-year-old very lively Labrador who was brought in to us during September and turned out to be quite the challenging case.

He came with a history of chronic ear problems over several months and despite various swabs and treatments, he continued to be extremely bothered by them, constantly scratching and shaking his head. Both ears were very sore and contained large amounts of dirty discharge despite regular cleaning.

He appeared to be refractory to traditional medical management, thus a surgical approach was required to correct the problem.

This year’s Wells Reindeer Parade will take place on Sunday, December 8

Programme for Reindeer Parade less commonly nowadays due to advances in our medical management of cases. There are various different surgical procedures but in Henry’s case a bilateral TECA-BO operation was performed.

TECA-BO stands for total ear canal ablation and bulla osteotomy. The ‘TECA’ part involves incising the skin over the ear canal and following the canal down to the ear drum, subsequently removing the canal en bloc.

There’s a hollow bony structure located below the eardrum where infection and discharge also accumulates – if left closed this can be a source of continuing discomfort and would compromise the whole operation.

A small window is made by removing a section of bone and this structure is thoroughly cleaned – this is the ‘BO’ part.

Following these operations Henry’s hearing is significantly reduced – it will sound like everything is underwater to him – but he will forever be far more comfortable which we think is to Henry’s benefit.

Plaque unveiled at site of posting inn A BLUE Plaque has been unveiled in Sadler Street to commemorate a former posting inn that had stabling for up to 100 horses.

The plaque is the latest in a series by Wells Civic Society to mark notable sites around Wells.

It has been affixed to the wall of what was once known as the Flower de Luce (1605-1760), The Mitre Inn (1760-1830) and The Mitre Hotel (1830-1928). The ground floor is now Minsky’s barbers.

As The Mitre Inn, it stabled up to 100 horses for the Royal Mail, and was a favourite meeting place for the city trading companies.

It had previously been situated in a couple of other buildings in Sadler Street, including the Ancient Gatehouse, but it settled at No 15 and No 17. No 15 was the Mitre Vaults, which was used for

When the trains arrived in Wells in 1859, the three major hotels, The Swan, Star Hotel

and The Mitre, all had coaches to ferry passengers to and from the three stations. The Mitre also had a Parcel Room in the Mitre

Courtyard where the public could collect their parcels brought up from the stations by the Mitre coach.

The Mitre had about 12 bedrooms, each named after the different bishoprics in the country. By the early years of the 20th century, omnibuses were available from the Swan and Mitre Hotels to meet passengers from the trains and take them to their hotels.

In 1914 it became a private hotel owned by Frederic George, and in about 1928 the building was bought by the Wicks family, who owned the adjoining property and used the building as a furniture repository. It was then later sold to a member of the Parrott family, who also owned other property in Sadler Street, and The Mitre became retail premises with domestic flats.

Meeting discusses crime statistics THE Partners and Communities Together (PACT) meeting at Wells Town Hall on October 29 heard that there had been 188 crimes in Wells in the past three months.

The highest proportion of those were violence against the person (62), which Darren Pearson – Neighbourhood Sergeant for Glastonbury, Street and Wells until the end of January – said could range from pushing and spitting to broken bones. In response to concerns from members of the public that it seemed like a lot of incidents, he said that it was not greatly up on previous figures.

“Most Saturdays there will be a couple of incidents around the pubs and clubs of Wells. I’d say 95 per cent of those will be alcohol related,” he said.

“It may seem a high number but we are safe.”

He said that the local police team was under-strength but that PC Dan Williams will be returning to help boost numbers.

He also told the meeting that someone had been taken away from the Full Moon in Southover by immigration officials and that the pub had been temporarily closed. A meeting was due with the landlord before it reopened.

A member of the public asked about the possibility of introducing a 20mph speed limit on St Thomas Street, and was told that a 20mph limit across the whole of Wells is being discussed as part of the county council’s city-wide traffic and parking plan.

The next PACT meeting will be on February 11, 2020.

Police enquiries are continuing into a burglary in Wells that took place on September 23. A property in Webbs Close was burgled between 9pm-10pm, though nothing was taken. Police are appealing for help to identify the two men pictured above, as they believe the men may have useful information to help with the investigation. List of names to be suggested for new housing development CITY councillors are to come up with a list of suggestions for names that could be used for some of the streets on the new housing development off the A371 between Wells and Haybridge, part of which will be within the city boundary.

The issue was discussed at a meeting of Wells City Council’s planning committee on November 7.

Councillor Norman Kennedy said that the last time the city council had been given the opportunity to name streets was when the estate next to Morrisons was built, and the names of former bishops had been put forward.

Committee chairman Councillor Celia Wride suggested using the names of former mayors. Councillor Sarah Briton explained that her family would rather her husband Chris’ name was not used, but said that Chris himself had once researched cider apple names because he thought it would be wonderful to use them, particularly liking the name Slack-ma-girdle.

n Committee members felt that the city council ought to adopt the precautionary principle used by other councils such as Frome when it comes to considering 5G planning applications.

Frome Town Council has said it will not endorse the roll out of 5G “until there is more independent scientific consensus that 5G wireless radiation is harmless to humans and the environment”.

Councillor Wride reminded committee members that every application would still have to be judged on its own merits.

The recommendation will go to full council. n Discussing an application about the demolition of buildings on the Travis Perkins site at Strawberry Way, Councillor Wride said that the tree and woodland officer had concerns about the fate of the trees on the site.

The committee shared those concerns, in favour of the demolition work but with a request that the trees be preserved.

Invitation to join others for friendship and free meals CHRISTMAS is a time for family, friends and fantastic food – but for more than 500,000 older people the celebrations will be marked by isolation and loneliness.

Thanks to a festive campaign tackling loneliness during the season of goodwill and beyond, though, older people could find themselves enjoying coffee and mince pies or a Christmas lunch at Abbeyfield House in Wells in the company of others.

The Abbeyfield Society has just launched its annual Companionship at Christmas campaign, when many of Abbeyfield’s 500 homes and houses throw open their doors to provide free meals and seasonal activities to vulnerable and isolated people aged 55 and over, who would otherwise be on their own during the run up to Christmas.

Abbeyfield House in Wells will be opening its door once again from December 9-20. The house is cosy and warm and a booking system is available for anyone who is alone at Christmas and would benefit from companionship to get in touch and join the residents for a festive mince pie or lunch.

This is the 10th time The Abbeyfield Society, the national older people’s housing and care charity, has run its Companionship at Christmas campaign.

Popular singer, presenter and Abbeyfield patron, Aled Jones, is a keen supporter of the campaign. He said: “Most of us take for granted that we’ll enjoy a fun-filled Christmas surrounded by our loved ones, but for more than 500,000 older people the festive season is a time of isolation that can bring to the fore painful memories of happier times with friends and family, a sense of loss, and the fear of being alone and a burden to others.

“Abbeyfield was founded in response to the crippling loneliness endured by many older people in their everyday lives. And the charity’s annual Companionship at Christmas

campaign is a wonderful example of how more than six decades after the first Abbeyfield home was opened, it is still working to help enrich the lives of older people and make their later years happier and more fulfilled.

“Companionship at Christmas is a chance for older people in Abbeyfield homes and the wider community to come together to enjoy the season of goodwill in warmth and laughter and to hopefully forge friendships that will last beyond the festive period.

“No-one should have to be on their own in old age – least of all at Christmas.”

Louis, the Wells Cathedral cat

Sadness as well known cat dies WELLS Cathedral has announced that Louis, the famous Cathedral cat, died on November 14 after a short illness.

Louis was found as a stray more than 16 years ago and became a familiar sight in and around the Cathedral, even having a book written about him and featuring on TV. The Cathedral’s chief operating officer, Jackie Croft, said: “It is with heavy hearts we say goodbye and goodnight to the gentlemanly, charismatic, adorable ‘Ginger Boy’. He will be greatly missed by all.”

London House is based in what was a Wells Cathedral shop, and before that the National Trust shop.

Owner Amanda Cooper said: “I had a shop in Bournemouth until recently but have been looking to move to Wells for a couple of years now and things just slotted into place nicely for me.”

Amanda has a background in design, attending Loughborough College of Art and Design before designing and buying for a small chain back in her native Lincolnshire.

Revealing talk about crime scene work FANS of crime series such as Prime Suspect will not want to miss the guest speaker at the Wells and District Neighbourhood Watch event on Wednesday, December 4, at the Connect Centre in Chamberlain Street, Wells, at 7pm.

Ray Welton has spent a large part of his career as a Scenes of the Crime Officer (SOCO) with the police CSI unit at Bridgwater. As can be imagined, he has many a tale to tell of his experiences as the man in the white overall gathering forensic evidence. Ray will be telling the audience about “changes over the past 30 years – both trends and techniques – and what is in the offing which will have a major impact on the service we provide”.

for more volunteers to set up Neighbourhood Watch schemes, Neighbourhood Watch chairman Simon Lawder is reporting “a very encouraging response. So many residents, all over the city, are prepared to help bring their community together and pass on advice, to make their streets safer and more welcoming.

School’s annual PTA Quiz Night raises record sum THE Blue School’s annual Quiz Night in October raised a record sum towards school resources.

More than £2,800 was made from the packed event, organised by the Parent Teacher Association.

PTA co-chairs Lorraine Millington and Polly Mackintosh said: “Once again, the raffle we held at the Quiz Night was extremely popular and raised a large portion of the evening’s revenue.

“The reason people were snapping up raffle tickets with such enthusiasm was undoubtedly the range of incredible prizes donated with such generosity by local

businesses, and we offer them our warm thanks for supporting us.

“And the team that won the quiz, The Jays, were extremely grateful for their prize which was once again a scrumptious cheese hamper donated by Wyke’s.

“Huge thanks to the fabulous PTA team who worked so hard to make the night a success.”

The evening was also supported by the company Create Flavours who matched funds raised by the PTA to help them reach their total.

The PTA team are now looking forward to future events including the school’s Carol Concert in December.

WELLS Vineyard Church held a fundraising evening in October at Elim Connect Centre to raise money for its two outreach projects, Wells Vineyard Foodbank and Vineyard Furniture Storehouse.

Both these projects support people in need in Wells and surrounding towns and villages, free of charge.

Fifty people enjoyed a sumptuous buffet supper which was prepared by Gilly Fowler and her team, Neville Dyke entertained by singing 60s’ and 70s’ songs, and auctioneer Alan Meechen sold many items in the auction of promises.

With some donations, a sum of £1,300 was raised.

Popularity of event will benefit pupils WHEN the 27th Wells Festival of Literature came to its spectacular finale with Roger McGough and his band, and the committee of volunteers had begun to recover from devising and delivering the largest volunteer-run festival in the UK, they were delighted to discover that the festival had sold more than a third more tickets than last year.

This means some very special things; yes, it means that festival-goers had spent more than 6,000 hours listening to the ideas, opinions and stories of 32 outstanding poets, novelists, historians, politicians, food supremos, scientists and thinkers; and trade in Wells restaurants, cafes and markets had been boosted.

But it also meant that £5,000 more than the splendid 2018 festival profit will be going into local schools to bring writers, poets, theatre fun, more books, one-to-one literacy support from Coram Beanstalk and many other events to encourage the love of literature and the word for more than 3,000 local children.

The statistics are frightening.

In the UK, 850,000 people have dementia, with numbers set to rise to over one million by 2025.

Someone in the UK develops dementia every three minutes.

Nicci Gerrard spoke movingly about her father’s dementia and how a catastrophic hospital admission left him ‘lost to himself’, immobile and inarticulate. She went on

to co-found John’s Campaign (named after her father) which campaigns for the right of carers to support people with dementia when they can no longer live independently.

Having witnessed what dementia put him through, Nicci felt the need to write, not a memoir of her father but a book about dementia.

Speaking to people affected by it, those with a diagnosis, their families, carers and professionals, she wanted to learn more about what it’s like to live with the condition. What does it teach us about our sense of self, how do we value people and what does it mean to be human? Her book records the answers she found through the extraordinary stories of the people she met.

Families are a key part of a person’s life and identity, and often their last and best connection with the world. They

help people with dementia to retain their sense of self, keep up relationships with others and to know who they are.

Dementia may strip people of many things but they still deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. We all need to be more thoughtful about how we speak and behave around people with dementia.

Nicci’s book is moving and sad but not depressing – these are stories of love, courage and optimism – as well as being helpful and uplifting. Stigma and shame are still associated with the diagnosis but it’s just an illness, and talking about dementia is vital if we are to deal with it as a society.

Businesswomen drawn to back talk GINA Rippon, an international researcher in the field of cognitive neuroscience based at Aston Brain Centre at Aston University, was one of the speakers at this year’s Wells Festival of Literature.

In her new book The Gendered Brain, she quotes a wide range of research about the origin of the conviction that the ‘female brain’ is different and inferior, and why this misperception persists in the 21st century and how the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience can, and should, dispel such fallacies for ever.

A WELLS fashion shop has chosen Heads Up as its designated charity for the year – and has already raised more than £1,200 for the organisation in the first five weeks.

Karen Bell, owner of AMBA Wells in Priory Road, is selling her pre-loved clothes from a special rail in the store, with proceeds going to the South Horrington mental health charity.

“We can’t thank the generosity of our loyal customers enough as the donations have already exceeded our expectations,” she said.

“The rail will be topped up regularly so there will always be a range of clothing to choose from for new and returning customers.”

Since opening, AMBA Wells has raised several thousand pounds each year for St Margaret’s Somerset hospice.

Their last charity fashion show three years ago raised £8,500.

Explaining why she has chosen Heads Up to benefit from her latest initiative, Karen said:

“Apart from a small grant, Heads Up relies on fundraising and donations to operate.

“In the next year, AMBA Wells hopes to continue raising much needed funds through various events including fashion shows, auctions, shop evenings – and, of course, the charity clothes rail.”

The fundraising will tie in with a focus on Wellness, the health trend that has risen to prominence recently.

Karen’s own Wellness journey will culminate in completing part of the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrim trail in Spain, in 2020. She will be collecting sponsorship for the walk which will be added to the funds for Heads Up. “I am hoping to have as much support as possible in the next year to try and raise as much as possible for the charity,” she said.

Lots of laughter at fundraising night A DOCTOR who has also made a name for himself as a comedian was the star speaker at charity fundraiser for Heads Up. Dr Phil Hammond is a part-time GP in Somerset, Private Eye magazine’s medical correspondent and an acclaimed stand-up comedian. He had the 130 guests at the dinner at the Swan Hotel in Wells in stitches with his humorous speech.

by Rupert Cox, chief executive of the Royal Bath and West Society.

The day before the dinner, Dr Hammond visited the Heads Up day centre, where he stayed for more than an hour.

He talked to staff and clients to learn more about the charity’s work, and was impressed by the services on offer, describing his visit as “truly inspiring”.

Free car parking in season of goodwill THERE will be free car parking in Wells in the run up to Christmas and on New Year’s Day. Mendip District Council is to suspend all parking charges in its pay and display car parks from Wednesday, December 18, until Tuesday, December 24.

It is also providing free parking all day on Wednesday, January 1, so that drivers can park on New Year’s Eve and use alternative and safe methods of transport to get home, and in car parks including Union Street in Wells for Small Business Saturday on December 7.

There will also be free parking on Small Business Saturday at Cranhill Road in Street, St John’s car park in Glastonbury, Great Ostry in Shepton Mallet and the Cattle Market in Frome.

Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Mendip District Council is delighted to be offering free festive parking to help local business, residents and visitors.

“We hope people will take advantage of the gesture and flock to Mendip across the season to support our traders this year, as they have done so generously in the past.”

Exhibition planned on rebellious duke A NEW exhibition is being planned to tell the story of The Duke of Monmouth, the Battle of Sedgemoor and the Bloody Assizes of Judge Jeffreys.

In 1685, The Duke of Monmouth and his Protestant followers hoped to overthrow the newly crowned unpopular Catholic monarch, James II. The Battle of Sedgemoor took place between Monmouth’s men and the King’s army on July 6, 1685.

Monmouth’s men were soundly beaten. Monmouth was captured, taken to the Tower of London and executed.

Wells plays an important part in the story. Monmouth’s rebel army wreaked havoc in the city on July 1, 1685. They ransacked the Cathedral, took lead from the roof to make musket balls,

stabled horses in the nave and seriously damaged the furniture and organ.

The London Gazette of the time reported that they “Defaced the Cathedral, plundered the town and ravished the women”.

Wells held the largest of the seven Assize Courts. The Market House was used as the court building. It was a long opensided pillared building usually used as a market for cheese, corn and bacon. It was situated in the centre of the Market Place in front of what is now the Crown Hotel, occupying much of the space now used as a car park and by the market traders on Saturdays and Wednesdays.

presided in Wells, 541 people pleaded guilty and one pleaded innocent. The one who pleaded innocent was found to be guilty and was executed later the same day.

The Judge’s lists sent to the treasury on November 12, 1685, show that in Wells, 94 were sentenced to be executed, 383 transported, 20 reprieved or pardoned, 14 kept in custody as witness for the king, 13 in custody for want of evidence, six fined, imprisoned or whipped for seditious words, and others bound over for £100.

It is believed that many residents of Somerset have objects or family links which date back to this important period in our history and the organisers of the exhibition would be pleased to hear from anyone with a story to tell or item which could be displayed in the exhibition.

Community thanked for appeal success THIS year’s Poppy Appeal collection in the local area has so far raised more than £26,000.

The appeal has now ended, but organisers still have to collect in money from various churches, wreaths and other sources.

“I am delighted with the fabulous response we have had this year,” said Derek Cooper, the Poppy Appeal organiser for Wells.

“Thank you to the wonderful generous public.

“A massive thank you goes out as well to all those volunteers who manned our collection points and we are so grateful to Tesco, Waitrose, Lidl and Morrisons for allowing us to collect in their stores.

“I am deeply grateful to the landlord of the Super Books shop that was empty who gave us it for two weeks totally free, allowing us to have a presence in the High Street. Whilst not wanting empty shops, I do hope I can find one again next year.

“The appeal began with a very successful concert in Wells Town Hall. My thanks go the city council for the grant for the hire of the hall, to Kevin Newton and Mark Tobin of the Swan Hotel for sponsoring the band, to Burns the Bread for the super cakes for the interval and to the many wonderful traders for raffle prizes, and of course to our own Wells City Band for the wonderful music, this year marking D-Day 75.

The Royal British Legion meets on the third Monday of each month at the Venue in South Street, and on the last Saturday of the month it holds a breakfast.

“We are most thankful to Tony and Sylvia for giving us our meeting room each month,” said Derek.

More helpers are always needed and anyone is welcome to join members at the meetings.

Festival to stage two community shows FOLLOWING on from the sellout success of the Wells Theatre Festival’s community shows in 2018 and 2019, organisers have announced that for the 2020 festival, there will be two community shows, both of which will be cast entirely from the local community and will be performed in front of Wells Cathedral.

Artistic director Ros Johnson will direct William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy of mistaken identity The Comedy of Errors, while associate director Louise Merrifield will direct a young people’s production to be announced soon. Auditions for both productions will take place in January. The auditions will be open to anyone who would like to play their part either in a speaking role or as a member of the ensemble.

To audition for The Comedy of Errors, people need to be over 15 and have a passion for theatre.

New date to discuss fire service changes A MEETING for Fire Authority members to consider options to change the way Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service operates has been moved to the new year.

The meeting, to consider the results of the consultation process carried out over the summer, was scheduled for December 18. Following a unanimous decision by members on November 8, the date of the new meeting will be Friday, January 10.

Members of staff and trade union representatives had raised concerns about the impact the decision may have had on staff if made just before Christmas.

In addition, the General Election has been called since the date for the meeting was set, and the service would not have chosen

a date for the meeting in such close proximity to an election.

Members need to be available to give full consideration to the results of the consultation before making any decision.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue consulted over the summer on proposals to modernise the service. The proposals include station closures, reducing the number of fire appliances and changing crewing arrangements.

For Wells, it could mean that while one of the city’s two fire engines is still crewed 24/7 with ‘on call’ staff, the other will be crewed at night only.

During the 12-week consultation, the Service received about 3,300 completed surveys, 700 written submissions, and five petitions.

Artists use figure for inspiration THE winter exhibition that opens at Heritage Courtyard Gallery and Studios on December 2 will feature a dynamic and distinctive array of work based on the figure.

Figuring It Out is drawn from a diverse selection of work by talented West Country artists.

Visitors will be able to view emotionally charged satirical pieces, compelling portraits, interior scenes and work infused with psychological tension.

Plans for four new homes rejected PLANS to build four twobedroom houses behind The Mermaid Inn in Tucker Street have been turned down by Mendip District Council.

The council decided that future occupiers of the proposed homes would be adversely

affected by noise from the pub – which is due to be refurbished and reopened as a pub with bed and breakfast accommodation – and that mitigation measures resulting in the permanent closure of windows and rooflights would be unacceptable.

Legal guidance with Chubb Bulleid

School aiming for further progress A WELLS school is taking action to address issues raised in an Ofsted report that said it ‘Requires improvement’.

An inspection on October 8 and 9 found that St Cuthbert’s Junior School ‘Requires improvement’ across all areas: the quality of education; behaviour and attitudes; personal development; and leadership and management.

Among positive findings, the report says that pupils are happy at school and feel safe; that parents really like the school and say that the staff know their children well; and that subject leaders are knowledgeable about their subjects.

The school says that there have been improvements since the last inspection in 2017, and that it will continue to improve progress.

Helen Mullinger and chair of governors Catherine McCulloch said: “While we are naturally disappointed with the report’s findings, we are aware of the improvements needed and will continue to make every effort to rapidly improve progress in the areas identified.

“We are pleased that Ofsted has acknowledged the pupils feel happy and safe at school and they recognised the wonderful supportive parents we have.

They also commented on how well we manage challenging behaviour and that bullying rarely happens.

“Ofsted recognised that there have been improvements since the last inspection and this is supported by our end of key stage data. We have and will continue to have a commitment and clear focus on moving the school forward.”

New solar panels have been welcomed by staff and supporters at the Connect Centre on Portway, Wells

Warm welcome for solar panels CONNECT Centre staff and supporters have celebrated the installation of new solar panels that could cut the centre’s electricity bills by as much as 40 per cent.

“They will dramatically reduce our environmental impact, something we are really passionate about, as well as reduce our running costs,” said manager Sharon Edmonds.

The project, made possible by a grant from Viridor Credits that allowed roof repairs to be

carried out, has been praised by Sustainable Wells.

Sarah Briton, chair of Wells City Council’s Climate Emergency Committee, said: “Not only is the Connect Centre demonstrating on a daily basis just what a caring community can do, but here they are, taking on the carbon challenge with the installation of their solar array.

“I hope this amazing roof provides encouragement to many others, whether organisations or individuals, to do likewise.”

A safety check on all gas appliances for use by a tenant must be carried out every 12 months

Landlords legally obliged to have gas appliances checked

THE legal owner of a residential property that they rent out to a tenant is required by law to have a safety check on all gas appliances for use by the tenant.

This check must be carried out every 12 months. Even if you are only letting out your property for a short period of time, such as for a holiday home for a week or so, you will still need to have the same safety check on all gas appliances to be used by the occupier.

The safety checks must be undertaken by a qualified and registered Gas Safe Engineer.

The checks carried out will be recorded on a Landlord Gas Safety Record. A copy of this form must be provided to the tenant within 28 days of completion or to a new tenant upon the start of a new tenancy.

As a landlord you are required to keep copies of these records for at least two years.

If you fail to comply with these regulations you are not only putting your tenants’ life

at risk but you are also breaking the law and could be subject to a large fine or in serious cases possibly a custodial sentence.

A Gas Safety Record must be provided to a tenant at the start of a tenancy. If a tenant refuses to allow for a gas safety check they could be in breach or their tenancy agreement.

Revolutionary life remembered

Fund supports local charities

A PLAY about a revolutionary Black Panther Party member who inspired the next generation of young activists is coming to Wells – its only English touring date outside London.

Messiah, which tells the true story of Fred Hampton, is cowritten and directed by one-time Wells resident Jesse Briton and performed by the company he helped found, Bear Trap Theatre.

It can be seen at the Connect Centre, Portway, Wells, on December 3, and will be preceded by a pre-show Community Supper.

Based on the life of Black Panther Party member Hampton, Messiah opens on the night of his assassination, and highlights his life and legacy.

Actors will bring Dickens Christmas classic to life COSTUMED readings of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol will be among the highlights of this year’s Christmas at the Palace fortnight at The Bishop’s Palace.

The readings by Wells Theatre Company will take place in the Entrance Hall of the Palace on Saturday, December 14, and Saturday, December 21, at 11am and 2pm.

The shows will last around an hour and will involve costumed actors, musicians and carol singers bringing the tale to life around the medieval fireplace.

Christmas at the Palace will run from December 18-22 and will see each room adorned with

decorations on a different theme, from medieval through Victorian to Nordic.

There will be a Christmasthemed family trail, Christmas craft sessions, and a selection of musical performances in the Chapel each weekend. For younger visitors, a ticket can be bought to visit Father and Mother Christmas on December 8, 14, 15, 21 and 22.

Entrance to Christmas at the Palace is included in standard admission, Father Christmas tickets are £10 per child and include admission for the child, who must be accompanied by a paying adult/member.

Nativity Festival welcomes angels THERE will be plenty of cribs, babies and animals in St Cuthbert’s Church, Wells, when this year’s Nativity Festival takes place.

It is still not too late to join in – people can take their Nativity set to the church on Thursday, December 5, and it will be included in the display, from Friday, December 6, until Sunday, December 8.

They should write their details on the back of a small card and a few words about their treasured set on the front. It can be old, new, handmade or unusual.

Organisers would also welcome angels to join the festival’s heavenly host. There will be stewards on duty at all times.

But it isn’t easy to maintain a healthy and positive emotional state. Anger, worry, and isolation among other negative feelings increase the risk of developing heart disease. As people react to these feelings, they also experience raised blood pressure which may impact on their health.

Happiness is a positive emotion linked with better health, longer life, and greater well-being. Being happy also promotes a range of lifestyle habits important for overall health.

The main question to ask yourself is: Are you living a happy life?

For those most vulnerable in our society it is not easy to feel part of a community. Often their children or loved ones live far away, reducing the quality time together. As a community we need to recognise those who may be isolated and try to reach out to them or contact an organisation that can help befriend and support them.

Book traces band’s long and proud history

By Geoff Baker-Hytch “ON Monday last the ancient Corporation of this Borough held their annual dinner at the Lamb Inn […] The Wells band was in attendance, and delighted the company during the evening’s festivity with a number of popular airs, played with exquisite taste.”

This quote from a local newspaper of July 1839 begins Susan Elizabeth Caola’s new book, A History of Wells City Band, 1839-2019.

For three years, Mendipbased author and publisher Sue has been researching and writing her book, and Wells City Band is excited to announce its launch.

Sue has already produced a number of successful local history books, including Hunstrete: Truth and Legend. Illustrated throughout with numerous archive photographs, her latest book will be ready to buy for Christmas this year.

Wells City Band chair and compere, Nick Poole, said: “In her painstaking research, Sue has discovered that our band traces its roots way back to the earliest days of ‘town’ bands.

Back in the 1830s it wasn’t even a brass band; there were all sorts of wind instruments – clarinets,

Barnes and Son at 41 High Street was the shop for copper, brass and novelties, and for “absolutely unsurpassed mince pies” Jeffords in Sadler Street was the place to go.

J M Atkins of the High Street sold Christmas cards of “chaste and elegant design” with picture books for children or elegantly bound books of the poets, devotional books and bibles.

Cleavers at 5 Market Place was the shop for Hair Ornaments with coloured hair slides, coloured head pins with side combs and offered “utility and grace combined” with flower vases, rose bowls,

leather goods and calendars, necklaces and jigsaws and picture blocks for children.

In the 1920s and 1930s the place to be seen was Phillip’s “Fairyland” in the Market Place. The children’s “Joyland”, “Gameland” and “Toyland” with an abundance of the latest toys on show which would gladden anyone’s heart.

The window display was “equal to any West End store” with its “daintiness of display” with toys from the cuddlesome to the constructional.

Events provide platform for reflections about end of life “DO not fear me,” said the Angel of Death, played by Marisa Picardo, death doula and Festival of Death and Dying organiser, at the Dragons March in Glastonbury on November 2.

“I am here help you when it’s your time to leave your body and show you how to honour and remember all those who have gone before.”

And so the season of Sawhain or Hallowtide was celebrated on the streets, in local food banks, arts venues and churches including Wells Cathedral as hundreds of people took the opportunity to celebrate a very British Day of the Dead.

“I’ve been avoiding grieving my friend’s suicide as I didn’t have anyone to share it with,” said Alice Mayhew, 30, who attended a singing workshop at St Cuthbert’s Church in Wells and a concert at the Red Brick Building on November 1.

“I found healing on many levels. I felt profoundly connected to all these people I’d never met before.”

More than 50 events took place over Friday, Saturday and Sunday (November 1, 2 and 3) across Wells, Shepton Mallet and Glastonbury that remembered ancestors, celebrated lost loved ones and explored the gifts, challenges and practicalities of the end of life.

THE new exhibition now running at the Library of Wells & Mendip Museum draws on its recently enlarged collection of historic newspapers.

The exhibition focuses mainly on local news – mostly in the Wells Journal of which the museum’s earliest continuous years are 1890-1901. The early copies are bound and held in the conservation store.

The majority of unbound copies seem to focus on sport and the sort of street and parking problems that are still with us.

Although the emphasis is on Wells and the surrounding district, the display includes some striking headlines such as a News Chronicle front page reporting the death of Hitler.

The exhibition will run until Easter and is open Monday to Friday from 10am-4pm.

STEVE Luck has been appointed to the position of Town Clerk following the early retirement of Felicity White.

Steve is well known within the city of Wells, and has been with Wells City Council in various capacities for more than 23 years.

For the last decade he has been the Responsible Finance Officer, and since April of this year he has been the Acting Town Clerk.

His appointment was confirmed at the full council meeting on October 24, and he takes up his post officially on November 25.

Keep a close watch on them, and try not to keep them all in one place. n Only carry the cash and cards that you need. Always shield the PIN pad when entering your PIN. n Be careful where you park your car, especially if you will be returning to it after dark. Reverse into position. n Avoid going back to your car to leave your shopping part-way through your trip. Organisation trying to make a difference Jenny Lewis, chair of the Wells Fairtrade City Group, and secretary Pauline Malpas explain why the group’s work is as important as ever IN the autumn of this year the Fairtrade Foundation is celebrating 25 years since the first Fairtrade certified products appeared on the shelves in the UK, and since then in towns and cities Fairtrade groups have sprung up in an attempt to achieve the status of Fairtrade and to keep these goods to the forefront of people’s minds. To coincide with this milestone, the Wells Fairtrade City Group is producing a brochure to show where these products can be found in the city.

Fairtrade farmers are in crisis, not knowing what the implications of Brexit will be.

This could lead to an increase in duties on consumable goods making it harder for producers to make a viable profit. They also have to deal with the effect of climate change and global warming.

Coffee plantations in particular are coping with crop death and this, in time, could lead to a world coffee shortage.

There needs to be an increase in public awareness and support for the foundation which helps suppliers to obtain the best possible deals for their produce

and enables them to be involved in the decision-making process.

Fairtrade enables farmers in Third World countries to receive a price that covers the cost of production plus the Fairtrade Premium which can be put into community projects of their choice and need. Workers also have rights to a living wage, can join unions and work under safe conditions. Fairtrade gives them a chance to have their voices heard.

By looking for the little blue, green and black Fairtrade logo when we buy our bananas, tea, coffee, dried fruits, rice and even cotton and gold and much, much more, we are helping them to achieve their goal.

There are now more than 600 towns and cities in the UK which have worked for and achieved the Fairtrade status, and we are proud to say that Wells was one of the first ten to take up this challenge in 2002, and every few years Wells Fairtrade City Group has to show the foundation that businesses are still selling or using Fairtrade goods.

When the foundation is satisfied that this is the case, an updated certificate is presented to the city and placed in the Town Hall for all to see.

Messiah back to bring festive joy THERE will be an opportunity to enjoy an uplifting festive experience like no other when Messiah comes to Wells Cathedral on Saturday, December 7.

In their annual performance of Handel’s great work, Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society will be accompanied by some of Europe’s finest period instrument musicians in the Music for Awhile Orchestra, led by Jean Paterson. The soloists are Elizabeth Atherton (soprano), Tim Morgan (countertenor), Peter Auty

(tenor) and Ben McAteer (bass).

The conductor is Jeremy Cole.

New series of talks by art historian LOCAL art historian Joanna Cobb, MA, is preparing for a new monthly series of talks for 2020.

n FROM THE TOWN HALL Volunteers help get city glowing WELLS’ Christmas lights could cost twice as much without the volunteers.

“Now the total annual budget is £10,000,” said Town Clerk Steve Luck. “That includes all the cross-street lights, some of which have to be replaced every year, and all the decorations and lights in the Market Place. Also the hire of a cherrypicker.

“Without the volunteers, who are mainly Town Hall staff giving their time on chilly November evenings, the cost would be twice as great. We rely on their goodwill.”

The work began at 6pm on the Monday after Wells Carnival, went on till 10.30pm, and was completed on the Tuesday evening. For safety reasons, Sadler Street and High Street have to be closed to traffic to make way for the contractor who provides the cherrypicker and staff trained to use it.

Volunteer visitors thanked for support SOMERSET Sight supports 3,500 people across Somerset who have sight loss through nine core services, one of which is their flagship Volunteer Visiting Service.

In June the charity was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest accolade for voluntary service in the UK. Meetings were held in October across Somerset for volunteer visitors to thank them for their commitment to visiting sight impaired people.

The Mendip meeting was held in Wells Town Hall on Wednesday, October 16, and included Street and Glastonbury volunteers.

Brian Perowne, a trustee for Somerset Sight as well as a local resident, thanked volunteer visitors for all their support and presented each of them with a personalised replica of the Queen’s Award.

Volunteer visitors with Liam Harkness at the front and Brian Perowne, trustee, behind him wearing a red tie in the Mendip area, attended the meeting to talk about his own sight loss since childhood and his previous careers in manufacturing and on the UK’s Paralympic Judo team, during which time he travelled extensively across Europe.

Liam talked about the huge impact that one of Somerset Sight’s volunteer visitors has made to his life. He described

the way in which his volunteer enabled him to adapt to his total sight loss, go back to college and start running regularly. Liam and his volunteer now run marathons together.

Liam started work for Somerset Sight in 2018 offering emotional support to people whose sight has deteriorated, organising county-wide activities and offering specialist knowledge

and advice on IT for people with sight impairment.

Glimpse of what is left of old ballroom

By Clare Blackmore IN 2022 the Swan Hotel in Sadler Street will be 600 years old and, it is hoped to be proven, the longest continuously running hostelry in England having originally opened its door to pilgrims visiting the Cathedral in 1422.

In such an old building, changed over the centuries to accommodate new generations of pilgrims and tourists but still on its original site, it is still hiding secrets of previous generations.

Mark Tobin and Zoe Newton of the hotel invited the members of the city’s Culture Club to have a peek at the remnants of the old ballroom, rebuilt by former owner Louisa George in 1895 after a fire, but in the 1970s under then owner Freddie Chapman a false ceiling was put

in and the space below converted to extra bedrooms leaving a void which hides an amazing secret.

Remaining untouched for the past 50 years in the cavity is the ceiling of the old ballroom with its beautiful cornices and rosettes from which grand chandeliers used to hang, and the amazing wallpaper which graced its walls. At the far end of the room is the remains of an arched window which was made of stained glass and which would have sparkled and shimmered in the candlelight and early gas light before the hotel went over to electricity.

The Culture Club are very grateful to the Swan for letting them have a look back in time and for providing very nice 21st century refreshments of coffee and pastries in the lounge after their sneak peek.

SOMERSET Community Foundation (SCF) has launched this year’s Surviving Winter campaign, which encourages people who can afford it to donate some or all of their Winter Fuel Payment to help local people who are unable to afford to heat their homes.

In Somerset, almost 11 per cent of households live in fuel poverty, and cold weather is a prime cause of over 500 preventable deaths a year – often worsened by living in older or isolated rural homes.

Last year over 500 elderly people living in Somerset were helped to stay warm and well through the cold winter months, thanks to the generosity of local donors who donated over £100,000 to Surviving Winter.

Another £3,800 was handed over to Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance by Wells Classic Motorcycle Club as a result of this year’s Tortoise and Hare Run

Motorcycle club able to make another big donation WELLS Classic Motorcycle Club held its 19th Annual General Meeting, presentations and social evening at The Britannia Inn, Wells, on October 12.

At the end of the meeting they were joined by the deputy mayor, Councillor Philip Welch, his wife Caroline, marshals and

helpers from the ninth annual Tortoise and Hare Run, who along with members, presented Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance with another large donation of £3,800 from the club’s Tortoise and Hare fund.

This donation was made possible by the strong support

that the club again received from its sponsors, brochure advertisers and entrants, along with much work by many club members, to whom the club is grateful.

Donations from these annual events to the air ambulance have now reached £24,600.

The event regularly attracts entrants from around the country to come and ride with the club in some of the outstanding local countryside.

Next year will be the event’s 10th anniversary. The run will take place on Sunday, June 7, 2020.

GP: stay active to improve mental wellbeing KEEPING active and spending time with friends and family are among tips for improving mental wellbeing this winter.

The recommendations have been made by Dr Peter Bagshaw, GP and mental health lead for Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group.

“Keeping active is a great way to improve your mental wellbeing,” said Peter.

“This doesn’t mean you have to go to the gym or find your

running shoes. Taking a walk, being active in the garden or even dancing round the living room to your favourite music can all boost your mood.

“Being outside is helpful even when the weather is not great.

Research shows that contact with the natural world can boost our wellbeing.

“Spending time with the people who are important to you can support your mental wellbeing and make you feel

better. If you can’t meet up face to face, then why not call up a friend or family member for a chat? Or drop them a text?”

Peter also suggests “rediscovering an old hobby or learning something new.

Whether it’s model making, knitting, singing or writing stories, why not give it a go?

“Challenging yourself to learn a new skill can kick your brain out of unhelpful thought patterns.”

Volunteering within the local community is another of his suggestions, which he says can help improve wellbeing as well as making a difference to others.

Everyone’s mental wellbeing changes throughout their life, but people do not have to just put up with poor mental health.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES MID SOMERSET OXFAM GROUP THE Mid Somerset Oxfam Group held another successful One World Fair in Wells on Saturday, October 19. This is the sixth consecutive year that we have staged the One World Fair and it has definitely proved very popular with Wells’ residents and visitors.

We filled three rooms in the Town Hall with charities from near and far which all took this opportunity to talk to visitors about the causes and projects that they support.

We were very pleased this year to welcome several new charities, but equally pleased to see a return from charities that had supported us from the start.

Our guest of honour, Michael Eavis, spent a couple of hours visiting and talking with all the charity stands.

As might be expected, the tea and cakes bar was busy all day and the OWF Diner served an astonishing range of tasty vegetarian meals to appreciative visitors.

Entry to the fair was free but our generous visitors put over £500 into our collection box.

This, with all other money that we raised at the fair, will all go to Oxfam, to support everything that Oxfam does to make the world a better place.

We have two more events coming up shortly in Wells: on Saturday, December 14, we will be taking up a street collection for Oxfam.

Then on Wednesday, December 18, between 11am and 12pm we will be singing carols on the Town Hall steps – please come and join us.

WELLS WI THE main event this month was a talk on gemstones and jewellery from Nicky Houston of Killens Auctioneers, a qualified gemmologist.

Nicky said we have been mining stones from the earth and modifying them since the beginning of time. Jewellers examine stones using a small light-polarising tool, but antique settings with closed backs that don’t let the light through can make this tricky.

The old distinction between precious and semi-precious gems is becoming less important

Mid Somerset Oxfam Group’s One World Fair as natural stocks diminish and dealers look for new stones.

Industry guidelines dictate how jewels can be described and Killens get a qualified diamond grader to catalogue their items.

Hardness is measured on a scale of 1 (talc), through corundums at 9 (rubies and sapphires), to 10 (diamonds). However, diamonds are not indestructible – Nicky sees many chipped ones.

The potential exploitation of mining industry workers is coming under greater public scrutiny, and some gold is being sold as ethically sourced, but it is hard to substantiate such claims without knowing about workforce wages and safety.

Caution should be exercised before buying gemstones on holiday, emeralds are commonly offered in the Caribbean.

Nicky’s advice if making an investment in gemstones is to go to a reputable jeweller, check their qualifications, and get a certificate.

Nicky then valued some items brought along by members using her special loupe eye glass and told us more about them.

We learned that the costs of a piece of jewellery magnify at every stage of the process from mining to cutting to manufacture until, by the time it reaches a retail outlet, the price is many times the value of the original stone. This means that bargains are to be found at auctions.

In other news, we had a ‘Not4Me’ swap and sale event. Members cleared out their cupboards of perfume, cosmetics, shampoo, vitamins, lotions and potions that they had bought (or been given) but were never going to use, and

donations raised a further £34 for the NSPCC, boosting our total donation to £171. Leftover items will be offered to the Wells Youth Hostel for homeless young adults.

Lots of Christmas boxes full of gifts and treats were brought along for distribution to young residents of YMCAs in Somerset. This year, in response to feedback, we covered our shoe boxes with non-seasonal decorative paper as many recipients keep the boxes to hold personal possessions all year round.

AVON and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens visited Wells U3A. Welcomed by chairman Mike Lee, she spoke about her role, priorities and relationship with the Constabulary. She also discussed the part that local people can play in policing their service and why it is important that she hears from communities.

This respected guest’s first words were “Prison doesn’t work.”

She believed that a PCC should not be a political post, and she is indeed an independent, covering 17 MP constituencies in the South West.

A PCC is accountable to the general public, and one of her major objectives is to balance the budget for policing. In the present political climate this is difficult, as 700 officers have been cut with a 25 per cent loss of budget.

She is a bridge between the police and public, and the Chief Constable is also accountable to her. She mentioned 60-70 per cent of police crime work is non-crime, and domestic abuse constituted one-third of violent crime. Abuse and sexual exploitation of children is a huge problem.

Eight thousand people, including children, annually are missing, 1,000 of these due to Alzheimer’s disease. Mental health has become a police problem and Sue Mountstevens has invested in mental health nurses to help with this.

She has ring-fenced the PCSOs for neighbourhood policing, and has set up Independent Residents Panels to scrutinise this.

“Prevention,” she said, “is more important than punishment.” The police must have the right kit, and she has financed £12 millions in body cameras and laptops.

She highlighted the problem of prisoners leaving prison with only £46. No wonder reoffending is between 60 and 70 per cent. Fifty per cent of Bristol Prison inmates re-offend. The Probation Service has failed, but

Welcome to our Landlords Q&A column. Each month we choose a question received from local Landlords. This month, Tessa asks: Sue Mountstevens addresses Wells U3A at Wells & Mendip Museum the Government has promised further funding.

On a positive note, burglaries are down nine per cent in the last six months. There will be 137 new officers by 2021 and 900 officers will be recruited thereafter. Rising knife crime has been addressed by sending 15 PCSOs into schools.

For the first time Sue Mountstevens said she could see a light at the end of the tunnel.

She insisted that the police want to make a difference every day in Somerset.

This was a fascinating talk given by an effective, empathic and passionate speaker that we are very fortunate to have as our PCC. John King WELLS ARTHRITIS GROUP WE set off from Wells Bus Station at 8.30am on September 21 for a six-day holiday in Porthcawl with an uncertain weather forecast for the week.

There were many showers during our stay but we maanaged to dodge them for the most part.

Our first stop of the day was at the Chepstow Garden Centre.

Then we stopped for lunch at Abergavenny, followed by a stop at Brecon.

Arriving at the Sea Bank Hotel at 4.30pm the group had ample time to unpack and prepare for dinner at 6pm.

The hotel was comfortable and the food was very good, and entertainment was provided each evening of our stay.

Following breakfast on Sunday we travelled to the famous Gwili Steam Railway,

a Welsh heritage railway in the county of Carmarthen, where we boarded a vintage steam train from the site of Abergwili Junction. From the railway we enjoyed a scenic ride and visited the Pembrey Country Park, and returned to the hotel along the Gower Coast.

On Monday we travelled up through the market town of Llandovery to Carmarthen, then browsed around the small town of Porthcawl the next morning, before being taken taken by coach to Swansea indoor market.

Our first coach stop on Wednesday was at Laugharne Castle in the town of Laugharne in southern Carmarthenshire.

From there we travelled to Tenby which is a seaside town in Pembrokeshire, on the western side of Carmarthen Bay and it would be difficult to find a setting more picturesque.

Thursday arrived all too soon and we said our farewells to Porthcawl and started our journey back to Wells. Our first stop of the return journey was at the City of Cardiff, the largest city in Wales and the eleventh largest city in the UK. Time overtook us once again and we made our way home stopping at Portbury to visit Oakham Treasures, one of the largest privately owned museums of retail and farming history in the UK offering a vast unique collection of memorabilia from the last century and earlier.

Our thanks once again go to Nancy for arranging this most welcome break and to Graham for his coach driving skills and knowledge of the scenic South Wales countryside.

“I have an EPC on my property that is about to run out. The current rating is an F which I am told means I cannot continue to let my house. Is this true?”

The Energy Efficiency (Private Rented Property) (England and Wales) Regulations 2015 introduce requirements for Landlords to have a property that meets Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES).

This minimum rating is an E or above in order to be able to grant a tenancy on a property.

There are two important dates with these Regulations.

The first being the 1st April 2018 after which it would be a breach to grant a new tenancy, including a tenancy that becomes statutory periodic when a current EPC shows a rating of F or below.

The second date is the 1st April 2020 at which point all tenancies running on a current EPC with a rating of F or below will be in breach of MEES. Of course, in practical terms you cannot just remove your

tenant as they have a right of possession which is not affected by a Landlord failing to comply.

However, allowing the tenancy to run means that the Landlord will be in breach of the regulations.

Where there is a current EPC which does not meet MEES the Landlord is required to make improvements to the property or to register an exemption.

Where the certificate expires during a tenancy, you only need to have a new one once those tenants leave and you start marketing the property again. The Energy Performance of Buildings (Certificates and Inspections) (England and Wales) Regulations 2007 require you to have an EPC on any dwelling that you market for sale or for let. There is nothing in the regulations that requires you to renew an EPC on expiry where there is no change of circumstance to the parties. So, if you reach the 1st April 2020 and your EPC has expired but your tenants remain, you do not need to do anything at that point.

n SPORT A team’s good form continues FOOTBALL JUST like England triumphing over New Zealand, the underdog came out on top on October 26 when Mid-Somerset Division 1 Wells City A hosted Premier Division table toppers Coleford Athletic in the Dimmock Green Cup. Wells started brightly and took an early lead when midfielder Tyler Cornish’s through ball split the Coleford defence and leading goal scorer Stefan Wasmuht calmly rolled the ball between the keeper’s legs.

Coleford levelled when a deflected shot from the edge of the box looped over keeper Harrison Veale and into the net, but City proceeded to dominate the rest of the half and were rewarded on the half hour when a poor attempted clearance saw Wasmuht break clear of the Coleford defence, dribble past the onrushing keeper and roll the ball into an empty net to restore the lead.

The 10 minutes either side of half time incredibly saw City have a further three goals disallowed. They finally went further ahead when Reece Cornish was brought off the bench, and minutes later he set up cousin Tyler Cornish to emphatically finish from close range.

City put the game beyond doubt minutes from time when a Reece Cornish shot bounced off the crossbar for substitute Tom Pledger to poke the ball home.

Wells City A’s recent good form continued in the Junior Cup against Yeovil and District Premier Division side Milborne Port on November 9. Wells started the game slowly but were kicked into life after several players were on the receiving end of some late crunching tackles, with the referee dishing out several yellow cards. This caused City to step up a gear and they had the better chances as the first half drew to a close.

They came flying out of the blocks at the start of the second half and took the lead through Ryan Pledger. They took control from then on, scoring four more through Theo Pavli, Ben Hewlett (2) and Tom Pledger.

Wells beat weather to make progress in cup competitions FOOTBALL WELLS 1st team have had several games called off in the past month due to the wet weather.

But they have had two good wins in cup games that were played, beating Corsham 4-0 in the Les Phillips Cup and Bishop Sutton 4-1 in the Premier Cup, before a stalemate against Hengrove in the league.

In the game at Corsham on October 30, Wells took the lead with their first attack. After great defensive play by Charlie Crook to win the ball back, he found Craig Herrod, who still had a lot to do but drifted inside two defenders before caressing the ball back across the keeper and into the far corner of the net.

Tom Hill doubled the lead 13 minutes later, sweeping the ball brilliantly into the far corner from a half-clearance.

Corsham went down to ten men after a late challenge by Ashley Alchin on Ross Padfield saw the referee produce a red card.

Wells scored twice more in the second half, Harry Foster tucking home the rebound after Herrod had hit the bar, and Harvey Hadrill calmly slotting the ball under the advancing keeper after being set free by Lee Cox. In their cup game against Bishop Sutton on November 12,

Harry Foster smashed a halfvolley into the top corner from 25 yards to put Wells 3-0 up early in the second half.

A fourth followed when Ben Amghar played a brilliant ball to Herrod, who unselfishly laid the ball to Foster in front of an open goal to net his second of the game and Wells’ fourth.

Bishop Sutton grabbed a consolation goal three minutes from time.

“Craig Herrod was man of the match after he started the scoring and then went on to assist the other three goals, a brilliant individual performance in a great team display,” said Wells manager Nathan Truckle.

Back in league action on November 16, Wells played out an entertaining 0-0 draw at home to Hengrove.

Kieran Davis, Craig Herrod and Charlie Crook all came close, and Harvey Hadrill was unlucky to see the ball smash against the bar from a fierce strike from 20 yards with the keeper stranded.

On 78 minutes a great through ball from Tom Hill freed Harry Foster but he shot straight at the keeper when one on one.

Six minutes later a sharp Hengrove counter-attack saw the ball squared to their centre forward who should have done better but he fired high and wide from the penalty spot.

The last chance was a brilliant solo effort from Crook that saw him win the ball back on the halfway line before he evaded four Hengrove challenges and then fired narrowly over from 30 yards.

“It was an entertaining game for a 0-0 result with both teams playing the right way and having chances to take the three points,” said Truckle.

First team win four out of four RUGBY A VERY successful month for Wells Rugby Club First team.

Four games played, four games won and some great leaps up the Tribute Somerset Premier League table, currently fifth.

Among the wins, probably the best was a 17 points to eight victory over the hitherto unbeaten Oldfield Old Boys. The most satisfying, the 27 points to ten win over Tor. The first derby match for seven years between these rivals separated by just a few miles. Whilst it is obviously the players on the pitch who get the results, credit must be given to the coaches, Al Simons, Andy Perrin and Ben Upham for their work in preparing the teams and making the decision to bring in some players who have come up through the junior section. On November 23, Wells RFC were hosting a dinner with guest speaker Tony Spreadbury. Tony, as many rugby fans will recall, is a former international and World Cup referee. He is currently the RFU head of professional game match officials and was recently at the World Cup in Japan as a referee’s assessor.

n NEWS Pupils singing at carol concert PUPILS from St Cuthbert’s Junior School will perform a special carol service in December. They will be singing at Churchill Retirement Living’s St Athelm Lodge in West Street on Thursday, December 12, at 2pm, and the local community is being invited in to hear them.

ABOUT 165 pupils from sixth forms across Somerset took part in a Climate Change Conference at Wells Cathedral on November 18.

The conference discussed many of the concerns young people have, and addressed what can be done.
