One person was taken to hospital and three were treated at the scene after an accident on the B3139 between Wells and Dulcote on November 20 in which a van crashed into the front of a First bus. Police say that a BMW was also involved in the incident, and that enquiries into the cause of the accident are ongoing

NATWEST has said it will replace an “iconic” pear tree in Wells that is said to be dying, rather than take the opportunity to extend its car park.

Wells City Council’s planning committee had recommended approval for the felling of the tree, near the bank’s rear entrance in South Street, only if it was replanted with a mature fruit tree of equal standing.

In response to a planning application consultation from Mendip District Council, the committee said: “This is a locally known and iconic tree, its loss will be felt and the need to remove it completely is questionable. It should be replaced by another tree, not by car parking spaces.”

NatWest has said it will comply with the council’s wishes.

Matthew Brown, NatWest’s local CEO for Somerset, said: “We have applied for permission to fell the pear tree because we have

Trading Post taking to the road WELLS Trading Post will be going mobile when the doors to the much-loved store are shut next March.

Robin and Tanith Tothill have announced that they are closing their fashion and country furniture emporium in West Street after 20 years.

Instead, they will be travelling to vintage fairs around the country in a Wells Trading Post van.

“We fully intend to remain in the trade we both love,” said Tanith.

Explaining the closure of the shop in a Facebook post, she

said: “The market has changed significantly. When we opened 20 years ago there was no eBay, Gumtree etc and Facebook hadn’t been born, and now the competition is fierce.

“We have become more of a tourist attraction but unfortunately compliments aren’t paying the bills and they aren’t going away.”

Tanith added that health issues and the fact that there will be no parking nearby once the Churchill Retirement Living development is completed were also factors in the decision to close.

Post Office stays put for now THE temporary lease on the Post Office in Wells Market Place has been extended for a further six months while a long-term solution is explored. The Post Office, which leases part of the Market Hall building from Wells City Council, is looking for alternative accommodation.

A Post Office spokesperson, said: “There has been an

extension to the lease until the end of April 2018 to allow Wells Post Office to remain at the current Market Place location.

“The vacancy has been advertised and there are interested retailers that we are in discussion with to find a permanent solution.

“We are not yet in a position to begin any public consultation.”

Reindeer ready for annual starring role YOU don’t have to wait for Christmas or visit Lapland to see reindeer. Four of them live year round in the Mendip Hills near Wells.

They are owned by Wookey Hole Caves and have seasonal work as part of the attraction’s Winter Wonderland feature. But you can see them at any time from a public footpath leading past their enclosure.

“They’re part of the family and part of the workforce,” said Caves director Daniel Medley.

“They’ve got a great job. They work 16 days a year, they love meeting the public and they don’t have to commute.”

In previous years the reindeer have been put on show near the entrance to the caves complex.

But now visitors are invited to walk up and meet them in a paddock next to their regular field.

“They’re an absolute pleasure to look after,” said Daniel’s wife, Laura.

“One unfortunately lost her

mother when she was only a day old and she came to live with us in our house... She used to sit on the sofa and watch TV and it was only when she started to turn the gas cooker on that we decided

she had better go back outside.”

The Caves team launched its Christmas-themed features eight years ago. This year’s publicity release says: “Visitors will meet Santa and his real reindeer for an unforgettable Christmas experience.”

But – unlike Rudolph and friends, Santa’s most celebrated reindeer team – the Wookey Hole animals have no names.

Now, at the suggestion of Wells Voice, the Caves team is to launch a ‘name the reindeer’ competition for children visiting them this festive season. n Wookey Hole Caves’ Winter Wonderland feature this Christmas, which has seen more than 100,000 Christmas lights installed in the caves, and gives visitors the chance to watch a Christmas-themed Circus Show as well as meet Santa and the reindeer, opened in November and runs until January 7.

Father Christmas is coming to Wells on December 3

Countdown to Reindeer Parade THE 11th Wells Rotary Reindeer Parade will take place on Sunday, December 3.

The event will be opened by the Mayor of Wells, Councillor John North, and the president of the Rotary Club of Wells, Richard Cussell, at 10.50am.

The parade of Santa Claus in his sleigh, pulled through the city by real reindeer and accompanied by Town Crier Len Sweales and Wells City Band, will start at noon.

Before and after the parade there will be music by bands

and choirs, rides and other entertainments in the Market Place. There will be stalls selling festive foods, drinks and seasonal goods and gifts.

Last year’s parade raised more than £2,500 by programme sales, public donations and generous support from the local business community. This money was passed on to support the vital work of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Programmes costing £1 are on sale now at the museum and the Crown Hotel.

Free opportunities to use Bishop’s Barn THE trustees of Wells Recreation Ground Trust are launching a new scheme in Wells which they hope will help encourage and support lots of new community activity in the heart of the city.

The scheme, called Into the Barn, will offer 10 free opportunities for organisations, groups and individuals to hire The Bishop’s Barn – and also utilise the Recreation Ground and bandstand if desired.

This opportunity is open to artists, community groups, schools, charities, individuals, businesses, collectives and social entrepreneurs for events taking place throughout 2018.

The scheme aims to not only provide some important cultural and community opportunities in Wells and bring together local community makers, but also to

raise awareness of the Barn.

In October it was announced that the organisation that ran the Wells Bandstand Festival in 2017, Superact, had gone into liquidation, so this venture comes at an important time locally.

In light of this trustees are especially keen to reignite community opportunities and potentially look at a new means of continuing the summer band concerts.

Councillor John Parham, chair of the Wells Recreation Ground Trust, said: “This is a great opportunity for Wells and one we hope will be embraced by the community and bring new life, ideas and events to rejuvenate a building already rich with a great history.”

Children enjoying activities at the Bishop’s Barn Open Day in September festivals to networking events, art exhibition to performances.

Groups can apply to have access to the barn for anything between 24 hours and six days and support will be given for applying for licences needed and use of the facilities.

As part of the scheme successful applicants will need to commit to raising at least £200 towards The Bishop’s Barn Development Fund which will go towards making future improvements to the Barn and Recreation Grounds.

The scheme is now open for applications. Individuals or groups need to be located within a five-mile radius of The Bishop’s

Barn or have a significant and demonstrable connection to the city.

To apply, applicants need to submit a completed application form and project budget for their event. The deadline for applications is 9am on December 22, 2017, for events taking place from February to December 2018. Successful applicants will be announced on January 17, 2018.

THE Wells Recreation Ground Trust has received £9,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a new project, Visionary Resilience, in Wells.

The project will complete the next phase of development work required before applying for funds to initiate a capital programme of works at The Bishop’s Barn.

As part of the project The Wells Recreation Ground Trust will hold two large public events.

The first, a Scope and Design event, will be aimed at local organisations and individuals to explore potential uses for the barn and design considerations that may need to be in place to enhance the site as a whole.

It is hoped that the event – which will take place in early January – will build on the expertise of organisations locally and assist in designing a

building that truly responds to community need.

The second event will be a large fundraising conference exploring donor development, crowd funding, sponsorship, shares, enterprise based models, working with trusts and foundations and developing collaborative funding bids.

The project will also involve community consultation with early years groups and teenage groups to see how the barn can help fill potential gaps in Wells.

Councillor John Parham, chair of the Recreation Ground Trust, said: “The Wells Recreation Ground Trust are delighted to have been awarded this significant funding from the National Lottery.

“This project represents an important next phase in the development of The Bishop’s Barn.”

Businesses emphasise their qualities TWO businesses that have been trading in Wells for a combined total of 87 years are confident that their customers will remain loyal when Dominos and Pets Corner open.

The pizza and pet supplies chains will be taking the two units being built at the former car wash site on Princes Road.

But the long-established Da Lucianos pizzeria and Thatchers pet store think that as far as their operations are concerned, it will be business as usual.

“I’m pretty sure we will continue as we are,” said Luciano Raso, of Da Lucianos in Broad Street. “We’re different to the mainstream. If you want to experience a really good pizza you need to come to someone like us.

We put a lot of work and passion into whatever we do. We’ve got a lot of passion for our pizzas.”

“To lose shops like ourselves would be sad. You want the romantic image of somewhere like Wells with its smaller shops, like a little jewel in Somerset,” he said.

Thatchers, in nearby Queen Street, is in its 60th year. Owner Trina Kenniston said they were disappointed but resigned to the fact that a pet chain store is coming to Wells. She added:

Dominos declined to comment on its move to Wells, but a spokesperson for Pets Corner said the company was

delighted to be coming to the city, and that the store is due to open in the summer of 2018.

“It will stock an extensive range of naturally sourced, quality items for a variety of furry, feathered and scaly companions including a small home farming range,” the spokesperson said.

The store will also include a Dogwood grooming spa, with products that “provide a truly luxurious experience for pets” and will include “a selection of natural pamper packages and detangling services, from conditioning treatments to hot towel wraps”.

There had been rumours that the unit would be taken by rival pet supplies chain Pets at Home.

A spokesperson for Pets at Home said: “There are no current plans to open a new store in Wells.

However, we are looking into possible locations to open a store in the near future.”

Poppy Appeal set to beat last year’s total THIS year’s Poppy Appeal collection in Wells looks likely to have raised nearly £30,000.

With some money yet to be counted, the sum could be even more than last year.

“I am delighted to say that the total as of November 21 for the 2017 collection for the Royal British Legion in Wells is just over £25,241,” said Wells Poppy Appeal organiser Derek Cooper.

“With more to come in we hope to beat last year’s total of £26,807.

“It would not have been possible without a fantastic band of volunteer collectors and committee members helping.

It’s a major task each year and I couldn’t have done it without them and the fantastic public support. We had over 100 boxes in shops and businesses plus

stalls in Tesco and Waitrose plus three Saturday market stalls thanks to market manager Stuart Beeton. The ATC and Army cadets were brilliant with collections in Morrison’s and the High Street, as were the Scouts.

“Our concert on October 28 with the Wells City Band was a great success, thanks to the band and to Poppy McGhee for her fabulous violin playing.

“To the dozens of local business who donated to our raffle a very big thank you.”

There was a big turnout for this year’s Remembrance Sunday silence and wreathlaying ceremony at St Cuthbert’s Church. This was followed by a parade along High Street and another wreath-laying ceremony at the Harry Patch Memorial at Wells and Mendip Museum.

New Speed Watch group gets to work FIVE sites have been identified in Wells to be monitored by the city’s first Community Speed Watch group.

A number of volunteers have joined the group and two have attended a training session on how to record, check and forward the data they collect.

speeding and remind drivers that they were within speed control zones.

The Day of Action took place during Road Safety Week, a nationwide initiative by the charity Brake which had the backing of Somerset County Council.

Councillor David Fothergill, leader of the county council, said: “It’s a simple fact that driving too fast puts people’s lives at risk.”

If the Speed Watch teams record a motorist driving too fast, number plate details will be forwarded to the police, who then issue a warning letter. This is repeated if there is a second offence, and on a third occasion, a police officer will visit the motorist in person.

Volunteers wanted to help at Christmas THE Elim Connect Centre is looking for volunteers to help with its work this Christmas – including on Christmas Day. A Christmas Lunch will be served on Christmas Day at 12.30pm, and there are four volunteer opportunities for anyone able to help: set up and serving, 11am-2pm; set down and serving, 2pm-4.30pm; kitchen team; and transport services and lunch.

Volunteers can make an important contribution to the work of the centre, in Portway, Wells, throughout the festive season, says centre manager Sharon Edmonds.

“Each year volunteers at Christmas help to bring warmth, companionship and vital services to people at one of the hardest times of the year,” she said.

“This is only made possible through the collective effort and generosity of volunteers who donate time and skills and good service.”

The centre also helps to provide a crisis provision when it gets below freezing for homeless people in the community, so it is looking for volunteers to spend the night with those most in need. They will receive an honorarium of £20 to cover their expenses.

“You will help guests feel safe in the sleeping area, it is always a fun team to be part of and times shared comforting and supporting guests with tea and conversation are often cherished memories,” said Sharon.

Accolade for pub’s pristine toilets THE Quarter Jack in Priory Road, Wells, has received the highest rating in the Loo of the Year Awards 2017.

The Wetherspoon pub has been awarded a platinum star rating by inspectors, who make unannounced visits to thousands of toilets across the UK. They judge toilets against a number of criteria, including décor and maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, hand washing and drying equipment and overall management. The platinum rating is given only to outlets which offer “exceptional toilets”.

Quarter Jack manager Carrie Preston said: “We are delighted with the award. Staff at the pub ensure the toilets are in first-class condition at all times and it is great that this has been recognised by the inspectors.”

Cathedral a winner at tourism awards WELLS Cathedral has struck gold at the Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards 2017.

The cathedral was one of the winners at the ceremony held at Somerset County Cricket Club in Taunton on November 9.

After six months of assessing evidence and judging by a panel of experts, the winners were announced by Laura Rawlings from BBC Radio Bristol, who was joined on stage by cricketer Marcus Trescothick.

Lindsay Mann, head of marketing and communications for Wells Cathedral, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to win the Large Attraction category at the Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards and to do it in such good company. What was most satisfying is that the award was based not only on our application but on a mystery visit to the cathedral, so reflects the first-class welcome we provide to all of our visitors and supporters

CHRISTMAS celebrations will be starting early in one Wells cafe – as early as breakfast time, in fact, now that Christmas Breakfasts are back on the menu.

From December 1-24, staff at Daniels Cafe in Queen Street will be laying out the Christmas crackers and party poppers, playing Christmas music and dressing up in festive attire while breakfasts are served.

On the menu will be waffles and syrup followed by a traditional cooked breakfast

Community hub with a long, rich history The spotlight this month is on Wells Town Hall, which has been at the heart of the community for more than 200 years RIGHT at the heart of the City of Wells lies the Town Hall.

There is a lift for those less able to walk, with the building designed to allow for wheelchair access all around, whilst still maintaining its main historical features.

It’s not just the main hall, however, which gets to have all of the fun. Other locations including the Parkes Room and parish of St Cuthbert Out, so they are the main consultee; Mendip may invite Wells City Council to comment too as large developments may impact on the city infrastructure and amenities.

The first Planning Committee meeting in 2018 will be at 7pm on Thursday, January 4; members of the public are always welcome.

The grand old Wells Town Hall the historic Mayor’s Parlour are among many of the smaller avenues of the large building.

The Mayor’s Parlour in particular has welcomed many of the city’s guests including hierarchy from our twinned cities; it is also where the mayor will host many of their own guests over their year wearing the coveted gold chains.

How could we forget the fact that Wells Town Hall is where Wells City Council have their weekly Council meetings? To many it may seem laborious but they are essential for the day to day running of the city. The offices for the town clerk, finance officer and manager of the building are also at the centre of the building, as well as a receptionist on hand to deal with any questions.

As for the history, well it was built back in 1778 to replace what was the Market and Assize Hall. It wasn’t until later down the line in 1861 when the Porch and Arcade were added, with 1932 seeing the addition of the Balcony and Round Windows.

A refurbishment in 1998 saw the Council Chambers and Parkes Room added as well as a licence being granted for civil ceremonies. Until recently Wells Town Hall also had its own city jail as well as a court room. The jail has not been in use for a number of years, however the court room has recently been converted to allow for more groups and activities.

Open spaces The team are helping out indoors with tasks such as repainting and minor repairs, as well as continuing to keep our outdoor spaces tidy.

They will be putting up the Christmas lighting display in the town centre provided by the city council for the benefit and enjoyment of the community.

How would you sum up your first three years as Bishop of Bath & Wells?

It has been a huge privilege. As a bishop I meet so many different people and visit lots of different schools, communities and places of work as well as churches and chaplaincies. It is a thrill to see all the wonderful and good things that are happening across the whole of the diocese.

What are the best aspects of living and working in Wells?

The city is small but really ‘alive’ with so much going on. There is always something happening around the Market Place, Cathedral or Bishop’s Palace and it is a pleasure to support as many of these things as I can What is your earliest

The world is extraordinarily beautiful and precious, but it is also vulnerable. We need to preserve and steward it well – we must do that for each other, for the very poorest people in the world and for future generations to come.

From humble origins to modern cinema On Monday, November 27, 2017, Wells Film Centre Cinema celebrated its 25th birthday.

Derek Cooper explains how he and his wife June founded the film centre and how it has developed since

November 27, 1992, with one screen and 150 seats.

With a trumpet fanfare from the late great John Wilbrahn who wrote a special piece called Derek’s Fanfare, the Film Centre Cinema was born.

Our opening film was The Last of the Mohicans and all of a sudden we were able to offer the city films seven days a week, on the day of release, in brand-new seating and with new decor and the latest in projection technology of the time.

The support was amazing and over the years has allowed us to eventually add two more screens with the latest digital projection equipment with 3D, and a fully licensed bar.

Even the screens are licensed so that cinema-goers can enjoy a drink as they watch.

Since opening in 1992 we

AT the end of October 1992, struggling to keep cinema alive in Wells at the old Regal Cinema as we were only allowed to operate four days a week due to the owners operating Bingo on three days, and the building being in such disrepair inside, we reluctantly gave notice and left owing a large amount of money – which was paid back within six months at the new venue.

Within four weeks of leaving the Regal we had moved into the old boys club next door, owned by our current landlord Mendip District Council, and opened on

We show a range of films from the latest blockbuster to arthouse specialist films and programmes for special needs families.

One of the biggest successes has been the introduction of our afternoon Tea Matinees which see the older audience of customers ranging from 50 years old to those in their 90s coming more for the social interaction it offers with coffee and biscuits.

In the last few years we have installed our satellite system and show live broadcasts of ballet, opera and plays from the likes of the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Opera House.

Charity gala events have been very successful raising thousands for local and national charities.

Ten years ago saw the premiere of Hot Fuzz with the stars and director Edgar Wright attending.

The film centre is continuing its success now in the hands of our daughter Sally Cooper, the current owner of the business, along with two of her sisters, Becky and Libby, and Becky’s husband Aaron.

It’s hard to believe 25 years have passed but we are proud of what our daughters have done in the five years since we retired.

n NEWS Ofsted reports say schools good

Second date fixed for Repair Cafe A REPAIR Cafe held in Wells at the start of November was so successful that another one has already been arranged.

Nearly 20 items were offered for repair at St Thomas’ Church Hall, St Thomas Street, in the event organised by local environmental group Sustainable Wells.

Not all the items could be repaired, but customers said they were pleased to be given advice, and the volunteer repairers are continuing to track down spare parts.

Items repaired ranged from strimmers to shirts, bandsaws to bicycles and cassette players to coffee machines.

Laura Sorensen, one of the organisers, said: “We were delighted with the fantastic turnout to our first Repair Cafe and would like to say a huge thank you to all the volunteer fixers. It seems that the people of Wells are truly committed to sustainability.”

Visitors were intrigued by the amount of items which could be made from waste products such as shopping bags made of cat food pouches, coin bags made of socks and water-saving devices made from empty milk bottles.

There was also a cookery demonstration – three recipes for a can of chick peas – and an opportunity to delve into the ‘basket of changes’. This had numerous ideas for making small changes to everyday behaviour which would save money, save resources and cut down on pollution and waste.

The next Repair Cafe is scheduled for Saturday, February 10, 2018, in St Thomas’ Church Hall, from 10am to noon.

Blue balloons guide to businesses WELLS traders will be promoting what they do and hoping to win some of the pre-Christmas retail business on Small Business Saturday on December 2. Those taking part in this year’s annual clebration of small businesses will be

displaying blue balloons.

Chamber of commerce chairman Robert Powell said: “We are lucky to have a large number of small businesses in Wells. Small Business Saturday is an opportunity to celebrate the individual spirit they bring.”

TWO Wells schools have been rated good in Ofsted reports.

The Blue School and St Cuthbert’s Infants School were both found to be good after inspections in October.

In their report, inspectors say that Blue School pupils benefit from a rich experience throughout their time in school, there is good teaching across a broad range of subjects and standards of attainment are high.

“The newly appointed headteacher has quickly grasped the character and strengths of the school and the areas which need to be developed,” the report says.

Areas for improvement are said to be: n Improve leadership and management by: ensuring that recent improvements to the quality of teaching are embedded across all subject areas and all key stages; making sure that the use of pupil

premium funding is analysed and used as effectively as possible to raise disadvantaged pupils’ achievement further. n Improve teaching, learning and assessment by developing assessment procedures that ensure pupils know how to improve their work and so reach the highest possible standards.

The St Cuthbert’s Infants School report said: “The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the previous inspection.”

Next steps for the school are to ensure that: n Plans for the school’s development are related to targets for pupils’ progress and attainment. n Pupils, particularly boys, develop accurate handwriting skills at an earlier stage. n Planned improvements to the pre-school take place rapidly so that children make good progress.

The thing I am told more than anything is ‘get on with it’ With the initial Brexit negotiations due to conclude this December, Wells MP James Heappey, right, provides his snapshot of where things stand BREXIT continues to excite those who are most passionately for and against.

For the vast majority of people, however, it’s all becoming a little tedious and so the one thing I am told more than anything else, is simply ‘hurry up and get on with it’. The majority opinion is acquiescence – which should not necessarily be confused with enthusiasm –

because most people have accepted the result even if it were not the way they voted.

That silent majority do, however, want the Government to behave responsibly and don’t seem to like the preference for

‘No Deal’ expressed by the most ardent Brexiteers. They want to be sure that the Prime Minister is seeking the best possible deal and they’re happy that we should make some compromises to maximise our trade opportunities in particular. Similarly, the silent majority have little time for the shenanigans of the most determined Remainers who have said that they want to stop Brexit altogether.

However, we should draw a clear distinction between those who advocate the most extreme outcomes and who are at odds with the views of that silent majority, and those who are simply seeking to make sure that the Brexit process considers all the things that it should. My colleagues in Parliament who have reservations about Brexit must be allowed to do their job as Parliamentarians and hold the executive to account. Publishing their photographs as the front page of a national newspaper under the headline of ‘Mutineers’

is not only an affront to them as conscientious members of Parliament but it also diminishes our democracy.

The passion being demonstrated in Parliament is a sign of a healthy, not unhealthy, parliamentary democracy. The Government being pushed to compromise to win votes is a good thing, not bad. And those who argue that the EU will delight in seeing Parliament in such a challenging mood see the equation only from one side.

Yes, Parliament will challenge the proposals of Her Majesty’s Government but at some point Parliament will also have to consider the proposals of the EU too. In that moment, we will choose between the best the EU has been willing to offer or walking away without a deal.

Berlin, Paris, Rome and Brussels will be acutely aware that not reaching a deal would be as painful for them as it is for us. A strong and contrarian Parliament is a good thing.

‘Great sorrow’: twin towns give their views Here, five citizens of Wells’ twin towns each provide a personal view on the UK’s departure from the EU. These are abridged versions of articles supplied in English to Wells Twinning Association BAD DURKHEIM, GERMANY Ulrich Baer WE had to acknowledge with great sorrow and disappointment the Brexit result. A Europe without Great Britain is not what it was, the one we fought for which guaranteed peace for such a long time. We were too sure, all of us, that times could not be turned backwards. Did we not enjoy all the benefits of our friendship and partnership, free trade, and free travelling in a united Europe?

Have we not recognised the signs of our time, realising that the citizens understood Europe as a creator of more or less ridiculous regulations? Has Brussels failed to elucidate the benefits of the EU to us? What has Brussels done to show us, the Europeans, clear perspectives and visions of true community with common interests?

We as non-politicians can only fight for the partnerships and friendships, which have grown after the war, and ensure that they do not perish. We must cultivate and nourish our partnership in spite of the bitter blow named Brexit. After the Second World War, people thought that building one big country, with rules in common, could avoid wars between countries and thus the European Union was born. That was a Great Idea, but maybe the way that Europe is run politically is not good, because inside Europe we can find countries with different economic levels and different cultures. Why not federate several countries inside Europe and let them decide their own laws as happens in the United States?

We really have a good time when we are all together and we hope that, despite these recent events, the links between our two twin towns will strengthen. In addition, the UK has got a huge historical and cultural heritage, so helpful for interested people, because they can study history through concrete evidence.

It seems the UK wants to enjoy all the benefits of the EU but does not want to pay for it. In such a community every partner should have the same liabilities and also the same rights. The British people will have to bear the cost of breaking up when leaving the EU structures.

But money is not at all the most important, because what and how Brexit ends will determine whether other countries will follow the example of Great Britain.

Divorces are never easy and enjoyable, so many nervous turns of action, political dramas and slamming doors are to be expected. In March 2019 everything will be over, but nothing is forever. Sometimes after years, even the conflicting partners come back to each other to try their luck after divorce. Delighted crowds give generously on ‘night of a thousand stars’

THOUSANDS of people packed the streets of Wells for what organisers have hailed as the city’s best carnival.

On a crisp, clear November night, spectators were dazzled by a stunning line-up of entries.

The only problem came when the Shambles cart became stuck after sandbags placed in the gully to help carts turn from Sadler Street into High Street gave way. The procession was halted for several minutes while it was freed by road crew, police and carnival marshals with the help of a Frost Rescue tow truck.

Martin Coppell, Wells Carnival’s chairman and chief marshal, said: “It was a night of a thousand stars in Wells on Friday night. The crowd were treated

to the best carnival this year.

The weather was great and our collection looks massively up on last year.”

For the first time this year, merchandise was being sold by official sellers to try to combat the problem of pedlars using the event to make money for themselves. Martin said that the PTAs from St Cuthbert’s Infants and Stoberry Park schools sold more than £1,300 of ‘totally awesome toys’.

He added: “I would like to thank all the judges and marshals from around the county and beyond for all their help, and not forgetting all the entries – they were fantastic.”

The presentation night will be held next February.

A WELLS market trader has been left devastated after thieves stole more than £2,000 worth of jewellery from her stall.

Police are looking for two men and a woman who visited Polly Gamble’s stall on November 15.

They asked to see some gold items, which they put on one side, and continued to talk to Polly while looking at other items. When they left, she realised the gold items had gone.

“I’ve never had anything like this happen before. It’s been absolutely devastating and I don’t know how I’ll recover from it,” said Polly, who has been trading for five years and attends both the Wednesday and Saturday markets in Wells.

A Mendip Tale

A

s they drove over the Mendips, it was soon impossible to see more than a few feet in front of the car. The indicators cast a sickly orange light as Edgar did a twenty-point turn and headed back down the hill.

“Damn,” he muttered, cursing himself again for forgetting the satnav. “Remind me what I’m looking for, will you?”

Clare lifted a sheet of paper from her lap. “Past the bus stop, second turning on the right after the barn, then keep left.”

“I haven’t seen a bus stop since we left civilisation, but we passed a barn half a mile back so it must be close.” Edgar gazed bleakly at the expanse of nothingness that surrounded them.

“Pull over – I can see a sign.”

He waited as his wife trotted to the fingerpost. He could tell she was grinning as she jogged the few paces back. “I know where we are.”

“Hallelujah.”

Clare decided to ignore the sarcasm. “There should be a lane up in the left – you can’t miss it, according to the instructions. Go slowly.”

“If I go any slower we’ll stop.”

They progressed in silence, Edgar determined to avoid the row that had been bubbling under since they’d left the motorway.

“There’s someone on the road. Ask her.” Clare prodded

her husband. “Go on.”

Reluctantly he wound down the window and called out to the walker. “Excuse me. We’re looking for Berrow Farm.” The girl looked at him blankly, a shawl held up to her mouth to keep out the dank air that oozed into the car. “Sorry – we’re from London!”

Silently she raised one hand and pointed towards what they now saw was a lane kinking back from the road.

“Brilliant, thanks.” Edgar was surprised by the relief flooding over him. He’d been driving for hours and was ready for a pint.

“We should have offered her a lift.” Clare turned in her seat and waved at the walker who was already melting into the fog.

“If we’d done that we’d never have found our way back.”

“So much for the Christmas spirit.”

“I’m right though,” said Edgar, smiling as a large farmhouse came into view.

“Things are looking up.”

Clare jumped from the car and headed to the house, keys in hand. The curtains hadn’t yet been closed and through the windows she could see the glow of a wood burner. “I can’t wait to get inside.”

Edgar opened the rear door of the car expecting Mabel, their spaniel, to bound out as usual, but she didn’t budge. “Come on, old girl.” Slipping a lead around the dog’s neck, he tugged the

Back in the house, he found Clare curled up on the sofa with a large glass of red wine. “I’ve decided I like this place.”

“Me too.”

The next morning, when Edgar went to let the dog out he found Mabel bolt upright, nose pressed against the glass pane of a French window. Mirroring her was a scraggy sheepdog.

Clare appeared behind her husband, wrapped in a heavy cardigan. “This room is freezing,” she said, rubbing her arms.

“What’s that?”

“Just a dog.” The collie raised its watery blue eyes, turned and trotted away. Edgar shuddered slightly. “How does a bracing walk followed by a pub lunch sound?’

“Perfect.”

The front bar was crowded so they took their drinks to a back room where a man at the next table raised his glass in their direction. “How are you finding it up at Berrow Farm?”

Edgar was going to ask the stranger how he knew where they were staying, but decided against it. “It’s very comfortable, though

Mabel’s not so keen on the dog,” he said, stroking her soft ears.

“Which dog would that be?”

“A thin collie with amazing eyes. Do you know who it belongs to? He’s very keen to come into the house.”

The man peered into his glass.

“Could be Horatio. He belonged to Sarah.”

“Sarah…?”

“Local girl. She went into a cave to find the stupid animal.”

The drinker shook his head, sadly. “Daft girl didn’t take a lamp. Eventually the dog reappeared but they never found the lass. Horatio circled the farm for years until he pined away.”

“How awful,” said Edgar.

“And did this happen recently.”

“1898 or thereabouts.”

“Right.” Clare frowned, not sure what to think. “So you’re saying the dog we saw was a ghost?”

The man shrugged. “I doubt it. He’s seldom sighted without young Sarah. The caves are directly under Berrow Farm you see.” He finished the last of his beer with a satisfied burp.

“You’ve not seen her, have you?”

“Us? No, of course not.” Clare laughed.

“Glad to hear it. The last chap who saw her was dead within the year. Same again? Or can I get you a whisky, young man? You’ve turned quite pale.” © Jan Ellis

THE Bishop’s Palace in Wells will be sharing the magic and joy of the season this December by hosting ‘Christmas at the Palace’.

The site will be decking its halls with Christmas finery – each of the medieval rooms in the Palace will be decorated with a different Christmassy theme, exploring styles through the ages and bringing the outside in, with seasonal foliage and greenery from the Palace Gardens.

Visitors will be greeted by roaring fires, a multitude of twinkling trees and a range of family friendly activities celebrating all the fun of the festive season.

The buildings and Gardens will be illuminated with colourful lighting, and a Family Christmas Star Trail will lead visitors through the Palace & Gardens, following the stars, to end at a special Nativity scene.

£25k for Men’s Shed project THE Freemasons were known for their secrecy but times have changed and they are now open about their fundraising for good causes.

The county organisation heard about the achievements of Heads Up from their Wells lodge and this resulted in a £25,000 grant to the mental health charity.

The cheque and a Community Award were presented to the charity by Stuart Hadler, Provincial Grand Master of the Somerset Freemasons, who said: “We give to a wide range of charities each year.

“We have a long list and did not want to put it all into a big pot, but spread it among small charities supporting members of the community suffering social or health disadvantage.

“At Heads Up we were sure that the money would be used in a focused way and we look

The money will be used to create a Men’s Shed at the charity’s base in South Horrington.

“The grant is very well timed as we have the basic building and we are enormously grateful to the Freemasons.”

Activities in the Men’s Shed will include woodwork, painting and restoration of old furniture and bikes.

There are 3,700 Somerset Freemasons and they are celebrating the founding of the national organisation 300 years ago.

WELLS and Mendip Museum has launched a unique SOS appeal to Save Our Swan.

The swans on the Palace Moat are a source of pride and identity to Wells and are known all over the world for their ability to ring the bell at the gatehouse to be fed.

The first swan to learn this skill was taught to do so in the late 1850s by Miss Emily Eden, the daughter of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Rt Rev Lord Auckland.

The original swan is preserved and on display in Wells Museum but having been in its present case for more than 150 years, it is in much need of conservation work.

However the skill to preserve this unique exhibit is expensive and is going to cost £2,000, and the museum is hoping that the citizens and visitors to Wells will help to raise the money.

The Swan Hotel, Wells Chamber of Commerce and Wells Civic Society have all agreed to make donations.

The original bell-ringing swan said: “Our swan is part of an entirely unique piece of English history and desperately needs conservation so that it can take centre stage in a new exhibition that the museum is planning.

n NEWS IN BRIEF New shops open TWO new shops have opened in Wells, a florists and a charity shop.

Sweet Pea Floral Design is owned by Toni Moore, who has been a florist for 11 years and has had a shop in Midsomer Norton for the past three.

With that shop doing well, she decided that the time was right to open a second branch in Wells, where she has family.

“We started small and have grown and grown,” said Toni, whose new shop in Broad Street was previously Wells Jewellers “We have been getting more and more requests for bouquets, wedding flowers and floral tributes in the Wells area so being able to open a base here will make things much easier for both our customers and staff.”

Children’s Hospice South West has opened a new shop in Queen Street in what was the camping and outdoor clothing store. It sells clothing, toys, games, books, media and brica-brac, and would welcome donations of more.

Vets given go ahead PLANS for a new vets surgery at Cathedral Park, Wells, have been approved by Mendip District Council. Shepton Vets hopes to have the new practice open in the second half of 2018.

Both existing Wells practices, Westfield Vets and Axe Valley Vets, had objected to the plans.

Street collections WELLS Lions will be making a number of Christmas collections in the city in December.

Members will be out shaking buckets around the High Street and Market Place on Saturday December 2, and again at Tesco on Saturday, December 16, from 10am-4pm on each occasion.

They will also be collecting donations at Union Street car park from December 20-22 when parking is free.

Local makers’ glass items on display

A RANGE of distinctive glass items are currently being displayed at the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen’s Wells gallery.

The exhibition includes work by local makers Will Shakspeare, Sue Sinclair and Chris Walters.

The gallery, and guild’s home, is at 32a Broad Street, tucked away behind Pickwicks cafe. Although it has only been in Wells for a couple of years, it dates back to 1933, and represents the finest of Somerset crafts.

The guild is keen to expand its membership at the moment and is encouraging budding makers to consider joining.

New exhibition is family affair A MOTHER and daughter are currently holding a joint exhibition of their work at Wells and Mendip Museum.

Wendy Lovegrove paints a variety of subjects – portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, animals and flowers – mainly in oils, while daughter Becky creates 3D pieces using mainly driftwood.

The pair have been creating their art for many years and show their work regularly in the Somerset area.

Wendy lives at South Horrington with her husband Richard, a retired lecturer, while Becky is from Frome and works as a fundraising bids manager for Dr Barnado’s.

All-clear for series of prom concerts EACH year, in early January, the chairs are removed from the nave of Wells Cathedral allowing visitors to appreciate the medieval space in its original state – without furniture.

The Wells Cathedral Promenade Concerts that take place during the month give the audience the opportunity to walk around and enjoy not just the space in the nave, but also the quire, transepts and side chapels. Some choose to wander the building, whereas others will find a special and unique place to sit where they can enjoy the performance.

Fun-filled pantomime promises plenty of swashbuckling action WELLS Little Theatre has had a very busy month, with pantomime rehearsals, replacing the auditorium seating and getting ready for the next two shows.

This year’s annual pantomime is The Three Musketeers, which will be full of all the usual panto fun along with lots of swashbuckling action.

Once again theatre member Vicky Orman has written the script for the show which runs from December 9-16.

As well as all the pantomime preparations, all the seats in the entire auditorium are being replaced with new ones which will be in place for the pantomime.

London Suite by Neil Simon will be performed from March 7-10, which is a series of four one-act plays which all take place in the same hotel suite.

Little Shop of Horrors is an outrageous sci-if horror musical

with music by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman and will be performed by the theatre from May 15-19.

Seymour Krelborn is a meek and dejected assistant at a floral shop who happens upon a strange plant, which he affectionately names “Audrey II” after his crush at the shop.

Little does Seymour know that this strange and unusual plant has plans that are far greater than he can ever imagine as it grows into a bad-tempered, foul-mouthed carnivore with an unquenchable thirst for blood.

The introduction evening for this show is January 3, at 7.30pm, at Wells Little Theatre in Chamberlain Street, and it is open to anyone interested in getting involved in any aspect of the production, whether that would be on stage, behind the scenes, front of house or just becoming a social member.

The charity selected this year is St Margaret’s Hospice and a grand total of £376.50 was raised through individual donations, delicious homemade cakes, and a gift of £100 from Wells City Bridge Club.

The chairman, Charlie Sutton, said it was a great evening. The duplicate bridge hands played were prepared by Roy Rowe to test the learning of members, from teachings given on other evenings this year. He thanked everyone for their generosity and support.

WELLS WI AT our November meeting we were transported from a cold, wet, dark Somerset November night to Africa by Charles and Nick from Mendip All Drummers, who brought along beautiful djembes, drums shaped like large goblets, carved from hollowed tree trunk and covered in goat skin.

Djembes can make a wide range of sounds when the skin is struck in different areas with bare hands. Invited to find our inner rhythms, we sat in a circle with our djembes between our knees and started playing by copying short phrases demonstrated by Charles while Nick beat out a backing on a set of heavier drums called the dun duns. Pretty soon we were drumming different parts in intricate patterns for minutes on end, with others providing accompaniment on traditional percussion instruments.

We were shown how to play some classic “songs” including one with the unlikely name of Funky McGrew. Even those who normally consider themselves uncoordinated were soon pounding away in a hypnotic trance. Charles said we were naturals.

The shortlist of five potential WI campaigns for 2018 was announced, addressing a range of important and topical concerns from stopping female genital mutilation to raising awareness of modern slavery. Members now have the chance to learn more before our January meeting,

when each member will vote for the one she would most like to go forward for further discussion and possible adoption at the national WI Annual Meeting in June 2018.

Some members will be helping a local student with her university dissertation by taking part in a focus group as part of her research into on women’s involvement in politics in rural areas.

The positive power of the WI network was harnessed to help the Children of Chernobyl Wells charity recruit more host families for the children coming in July 2018. Members took leaflets to display in schools and workplaces and agreed to spread the word amongst their families, friends and neighbours.

Lots of people brought beautifully wrapped shoeboxes filled with presents to be distributed to young people supported by the YMCA in Somerset. Sadly, for some of them the shoebox is the only Christmas gift they will receive.

The next meeting will be at the Mendip and Wells Museum at 7.30pm on Tuesday, December 5. The crafters will have made willow rings for members to make their own Christmas wreaths, so people should bring garden foliage and decorations.

Veronica Howe THE BEETLECRUSHERS THE Beetlecrushers clog and step dance group have enjoyed an extended ‘Dancing Out’ season this year, with performances at both Barrington Court’s Apple Day on October 22, and at Pumpkins on the Platform, an event held on October 29. at Midsomer Norton Heritage Station. A variety of dances from around the British Isles were enthusiastically received, as well as a new dance choreographed using traditional steps.

The final opportunity to see the group before the end of the year will be in Glastonbury on December 3 at The Rural Life Museum’s A Very Victorian Christmas.

Harnessing healing power of horses HORSES are helping people from Wells and the surrounding area who suffer with stress or low self-esteem to turn their lives around.

Rosie Withey, a wellbeing coach with a difference, is using her years of experience riding, training and coaching with horses to support people who are looking to make changes in their life or feeling the effects of stress.

From her stables at Clutton, the life and mentoring coach and hypnotherapist – who previously coached the British pentathlon team to Olympic gold success at the 2000 Games in Sydney – offers group workshops and oneto-one sessions with her and her horse Jack and pony Bramble.

“After many years of working alongside horses and people, I feel very fortunate to be bringing my skills together in this range of workshops and coaching opportunities that explore the potential of the horse-human relationship,” said Rosie.

“Many people find it to be a deeply rewarding experience, and enjoy the gentle, supportive energy of the horses.”

She says that a lot of her clients come from Wells seeking what she hopes will be “lifechanging ‘aha’ moments”.

Award another boost to broadcaster’s career FORMER Wells Blue School student Charlie Taylor is more hopeful than ever that one day he might join the Test Match Special team after winning an ECB cricket journalism award.

Charlie has become the first broadcaster to win the Christopher Martin-Jenkins Young Cricket Journalist of the Year award for his Cricket Show on BBC Somerset.

“I am proud of the work I do for the Cricket Show and know it’s good quality, but there are so many excellent journalists working at a national level I thought I’d barely get a look in,” said Charlie.

“I was almost speechless when the ECB rang me to say I’d won. It’s made me feel very proud of what I and the BBC do in covering county cricket, a game often judged for its seemingly small support base compared to football.”

Charlie started working in radio in 2009, aged 17, when he volunteered for Glastonbury FM, the local community radio station. From there he moved to BBC Somerset on a weekly voluntary basis and now works there six days a week.

He said: “My absolute dream is to work for TMS. I think the show provides an incredible service to fans, striking the

His cricket-mad family encouraged his love of the game, which became a real infatuation during the 2005 Ashes series.

His first experience of watching the professional game in the flesh came when an uncle took him to a Test match at Lord’s when he was 14.

“I loved it and from there is where I started following Somerset more,” he said.

to give listeners greater access to the county clubs. It is broadcast every fortnight, from April to September, and covers every level of cricket from Somerset international players down to rural village and pub teams.

Women’s cricket is covered on every show, and disability cricket is regularly featured.

In the last couple of years Charlie has become a player for Axbridge CC, a team which only plays friendly matches.

He said: “It’s been brilliant to play in such a fun side, and actually gives me a better understanding of the game which I can use in the commentary box.

Seeing a perfectly-timed cover drive or a spinning delivery move as it bounces is a beautiful thing to watch. Plus its history and in particular its importance to Somerset makes it all the more appealing.”

Charlie said that apart from working for TMS, the BBC gaining the rights to show live cricket on TV again in 2020 and beyond gives him another target to aim for in his broadcasting career.

He added: “Earlier this year I made my national commentary debut on 5Live, so coupled with winning the ECB Young Journalist of the Year I feel I’m going in the right direction. If it doesn’t happen and I continue local commentary and presenting BBC Somerset’s Cricket Show throughout my career, then I’ll be very happy too.”
