WELLS City Council could gain new powers following the decision to abolish Somerset County Council, Mendip District Council and the county’s three other district councils, and replace them with a single unitary authority for Somerset.

It means that some of the services currently provided by others could become the responsibility of the city council instead.

Richard Mansfield of Mansfield Opticians in Wells collects a prize on behalf of his wife Kathryn, who was one of the two winners of the Bishop’s Eye competition. The other was Angela Perrée, of Wells. Theirs were the first two entries to be drawn from those who answered correctly that the Bishop’s Eye building dates to the 15th century. They each win six bottles of wine from Bristol Fine Wine, a selection of cheeses from Longmans, and some newly launched bottles of beer from The Wild Beer Company. The total value of each prize is £115. There were 95 entries to the competition.

Cool salsa vibe for summer afternoon A SUMMER salsa will have Wells Market Place swaying to Latin American grooves on August Bank Holiday Monday.

Paul Cannon from the Wells Jazz Collective is organising the event following the success of a music afternoon he staged last August Bank Holiday. This year’s show will be led by Cubanborn vocalist and pianist Milly Riquelme. She will be supported by singers and players from the Wells Jazz Collective and others.

Paul said the style of music is ideally suited to the cafe quarter feel of the location on a summer afternoon.

“There should be a really good vibe, just perfect for people sitting at the pavement cafes and those who want to come and soak up a bit of culture,” he said.

“Milly Riquelme is a talented artist, and has even played with members of the prestigious Buena Vista Social Club.”

The programme of music Paul put on in front of the Town Hall last year was so well supported that it prompted the foundation of the Wellspring

Live Music Recovery Fund. He said: “Proceeds from that are now helping artists and venues to get live music up and running again after being locked down for so long.

“The Latin jazz event is one of a number of local performances to be backed by the fund.”

Milly Riquelme was born in Cuba and studied in Havana before touring at home and abroad. Since 2009 she has been based in England and now lives in Somerset.

She performs increasingly in her adopted county and before her Wells show will star in one of the monthly jazz nights at the Red Brick Building in Glastonbury on August 6.

Her Wells Market Place show on August 30 starts at 2pm.

“Expect exciting Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms with a liberal dash of salsa,” said Paul.

There will be no charge for the Wells event but donations are welcome to top up the Wellspring Fund and ensure the continuing recovery of the city’s live music scene.

Changes ahead after unitary decision From page 1 residents to do the best for our city. We have already had discussions with Mendip and will do everything possible to get city assets back under the control of Wells City Council.

“We will also be working with Somerset to provide more services at a local level.

“The councillors and staff will be doing everything possible to implement the changes and get the best value services for our local residents.”

Robert Jenrick, the Secretary for State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, announced on July 21 that he was backing the One Somerset proposal put forward by the county council.

The next steps will be for Parliament to make a formal decision to set up the new council ahead of elections anticipated in 2022 and then the new unitary council officially in place in April 2023.

Councillor David Fothergill, Leader of Somerset County Council, said: “We’re delighted the Secretary of State has backed our ambitious plans to give Somerset the resilient, unified, and dynamic system of local government it deserves.

“One Somerset is simple, it is clear, and it delivers what our residents want – better services, better value for money, decisions made locally, and an end to the confusion and bureaucracy of having multiple overlapping councils.

“We are now calling on everyone to get behind One Somerset – and we look forward

The district councils had put forward an alternative plan, Stronger Somerset, for two unitary authorities.

In a joint statement, the Leaders of the district councils said: “The Secretary of State is riding roughshod over the people of Somerset who voted 65 per cent to 35 per cent in favour of the Stronger Somerset plan over the other scheme chosen by the Secretary of State… We are duty bound to represent the interests of our constituents to our fullest ability. We will continue to seek to ensure that their voices are heard. There is still a chance for Parliament to see sense and force a rethink. We just cannot understand why the wishes of the people of Somerset are being ignored.”

Wells City Council lost

some of its powers with local government reorganisation and the creation of Mendip District Council in 1974.

Mendip is responsible for, among other things, planning applications, public car parks, and running markets.

Commenting before the announcement was made, Wells MP James Heappey said he was in favour of the One Somerset vision.

He said: “In my view, the single county unitary – as there is in Cornwall and Wiltshire – is a more efficient way of delivering county-wide services whilst creating space for more empowered town and parish councils. Personally, I believe the larger council actually creates more room for ultra-local decision making and I have been impressed by the resurgence of town councils in Wiltshire since they went down this path.”

He added that it was important that everyone regards this as an entirely new enterprise, not just a continuation of the current county council, and he hoped that all sides would now work together, no matter what the Secretary of State decided.

Tributes to teacher who inspired so many WELLS Blue School is to remember teacher Sam Holland, who has died of cancer at the age of 50, by renaming the sports hall in her honour.

From September the hall will be known as Holland Hall at the suggestion of students who contributed ideas for remembering Sam, who was head of the PE department.

Before her death, Sam asked that a fund be created in school to support the PE department with buying equipment, and donations given at her funeral will be going to this fund as well as the hospice and hospital where she was cared for.

Students wearing PE kit were going to be lining Chamberlain Street and applauding as the funeral car passed on its way to the service in St Cuthbert’s Church on July 23. The school was holding a gathering afterwards for family, friends and colleagues in Bailey and

across the lawns in front of school.

Sam taught at the school for almost 28 years, having joined immediately after graduating from Loughborough University.

During her time at the Blue she arranged and went on many trips, including skiing and water sports trips, and was involved in Duke of Edinburgh and Ten Tors expeditions. She also had responsibility for many student teachers and Newly Qualified Teachers.

Headteacher Mark Woodlock said that the school had received a huge number of emails, letters and cards from people about the difference that Sam had made to their lives, and these had been passed on to her in the last few weeks.

Sam Holland had taught at Wells Blue School for almost 28 years doubt a life that had impact, a life that positively changed the lives of others,” he said.

“She was a role model and educator, an inspirational sportswoman and mentor; she was a trusted colleague and a friend. She helped to make our community more than the sum of its parts. We will miss her greatly.”

Sam’s husband Dan writes: Sam didn’t just teach PE but she lived for and loved all kinds of exercise. A keen member of Shepton Mallet Hockey team she also participated in exercise classes and yoga; ran; cycled; walked and swam. She liked to exercise every single day without fail. When she wasn’t taking part in sports herself she was an ardent spectator, watching live sports whenever the opportunity presented itself.

She felt incredibly lucky to

have been able to go to both the Commonwealth and Olympic Games as well as the Tour de France and also regularly watched a variety of sports at club level.

She and I were regular travellers. Our trips included memorable journeys to beautiful places, both with school groups and on our own. Her adventures on the sports field and in the world gave her great comfort toward the end of her life when she was able to revisit these places from her hospital bed.

The final weeks of her life were spent in the William Budd Ward at RUH and St Margaret’s Hospice in Taunton where she was looked after with compassion and kindness which allowed both of us to feel safe and cared for. Typically of Sam she was keen for us to fundraise for both these places, as well as the school, once she was no longer with us. Even at the end Sam was thinking of others before herself; we hope to honour her memory by embarking on a round of fundraising in September. Sam’s death will leave an enormous hole in all of our lives and our hearts, raising money in her name will hopefully give us a way to repay the enormous debt we all feel we have to her.

I have not only lost the beautiful wife I loved so dearly but my best friend for more than 20 years. I would like to thank everyone for the huge amount of love and support that we have received over the last few months, it is a great comfort to me to know how many people also cared about Sam and understood what an incredibly special individual she was.

St Andrews Ward lobbying action CAMPAIGNERS hoping to keep open the St Andrews Ward in Wells lobbied Somerset County Council councillors on July 21.

Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group has decided to move the 14 mental health beds from Wells to Yeovil, though says that is unlikely to happen before summer 2022.

The Save St Andrews Ward group is protesting against

the move, and members made speeches and waved placards as councillors arrived for a meeting in Taunton. Campaigner Dave Chapple said: “We did what we set out to do – to let SCC know that the St Andrews Ward campaign is flourishing and that we are not going away.”

A petition to save the ward has been signed by nearly 2,800 people.

n Twelve bottles of locally produced apple juice from Plotgate were presented to Terri Perkins for her upcycled bunting made of ballpool balls that helped decorate Henderson Place.

Sarah Briton of Wells City Council’s Covid Recovery Group praised the great effort made by more than 100 bunting makers in cheering up Wells after a long period of isolation and the wonderful teamwork involved in making it.

She thanked Wells Rugby Club and Wells Lions and a small army of bunting volunteers for helping to install and remove most of the bunting, despite the rain and wind. It will remain in the Market Place for the summer.

Meeting hears of ideas for bus services

PETER Travis, Co-Chair of bus campaign group Somerset Bus Partnership, made a presentation about Bus Back Better to Wells City Council at the council meeting on June 24.

Bus Back Better is the Government’s strategy to increase bus use, with £3 billion of funding being made available across the country to improve bus services and facilities.

Somerset County Council is producing a Bus Service Improvement Plan, and Mr Travis said that the city council should draw up its own list of improvements for Wells and propose them to the county council.

He said that the last census showed that one in three people in the Wells Central Ward had no access to a car, and that the figures were one in four people for the St Cuthbert’s Ward and one in six for the St Thomas’ Ward.

His own suggestions for Wells included a circular route – perhaps with battery-powered buses – that connects residents to the city centre, the health centre and outlying estates.

He wondered whether there should be an express service to Bath, and said that people had told him Wells needs a direct bus link to Castle Cary railway station, thereby connecting the city by bus to rail.

“This is only likely if city councillors make the case very strongly,” he said.

He said that timetable information could be improved, ideally with real-time information at bus stops, and the bus station and bus shelters should be improved.

A review with all councillors will take place in August.

Contemporary music centre campaign gains momentum THE campaign to establish the Wells Contemporary Music Centre in part of the Portway Annexe continues to gain momentum.

Nigel Fraser reports that, since the story in last month’s Wells Voice, several accomplished musicians have made contact, keen to help others develop their talents.

This ‘Vision’ includes a range of facilities that can help people develop ideas and nurture talent and 21st century enterprise: ideas for arts and crafts, further education, the development of contemporary music, dance,

The excitement amongst the people of Wells about regaining this building, which has welcomed many of us in the past, is really becoming evident as more people are getting involved.

Road closure for resurfacing A SECTION of the A39 between Wells and Glastonbury will be closed for nearly two weeks in August. Somerset County Council will be carrying out resurfacing of the Hartlake Straight on the A39 Wells Road from Monday, August 16, to Friday, August 27.

The road surface from the Tin Bridge roundabout just outside Glastonbury towards Polsham has been steadily declining and now needs major repair.

The scheme requires a 24/7 road closure for the duration of the works to ensure the safety of the workforce and public. A suggested diversion route will be signposted on site or can be found at www.travelsomerset. co.uk/roadworks.

Councillor John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “We appreciate that it will be disruptive in the short term, but this will increase the life of the road by many years.”

Summer feelgood factor at film centre THERE has been strong public support for Wells Film Centre since it reopened its doors on May 28.

It was closed for a third time due to lockdowns and government restrictions, and since reopening, has been operating at a reduced capacity and following a strict cleaning regime.

Sally Cooper, Wells Film Centre’s Proprietor, has been pleased with the support from the public so far.

“It has been a very hard time for many businesses and it was great when we were able to get back open in May,” she said.

“The first few month have been very successful even on reduced capacities, however looking forward we have a great summer line-up of films and feel the industry is on its way back to where it was before the start of the pandemic.”

On Monday, July 19, there was a change of Covid rules around wearing masks and social distancing. Wells Film Centre has continued to encourage customers to wear face coverings and maintain social distancing.

“For the continuation of the cinema we had to try and find a balance between being Covid-secure and being able to afford to remain open. We have now introduced every row for booking, however we are leaving a ‘spacer seat’ between bookings to allow for some social distancing,” said Sally.

“We have left in place all our screens on the counters, hand

Festival will provide packed programme THE Wells Festival of Literature punches above its weight.

It is the smallest city in England and its Festival of Literature is run entirely by a committee of volunteers – and yet in 2020 it was one of the very few in the whole country to feature real live speakers and a real live audience.

This year promises to be equally popular, and that team looks set, as always, to fit a huge amount into just one week in just one venue: politicians, historians, scientists, environmentalists, botanists, philosophers; the list goes on.

Household names will rub shoulders with rising stars and followers of all political persuasions will share a stage in Cedars Hall at the heart of Wells.

The whole week will be packed with stories, opinions, questions, answers, suggestions, facts, fiction, prose and poetry.

This year, road-map permitting,

Julia Samuel in conversation at last year’s festival; books by Lucy Jago and Lucy Atkins will be discussed at this year’s event the plan is to have all speakers on stage in person but, with the team’s 2020 expertise firmly under their belt, the festival will

also be offering all the events as live-streamed options. So those who cannot be in the auditorium itself need not worry. The speakers will meet them in the comfort of their own home.

The festival’s special events will be back for 2021 too. Lucy Atkins’s best-selling thriller Magpie Lane will be this year’s topic at the popular Book Club event which takes place in Cedars Hall at 2.30pm on Sunday, October 17. The format, in which the audience shares its thoughts and suggestions on the work directly with the author, has become increasingly popular every year – and it is not necessary to be a book club member to go along and have a say.

The Literary Lunches, paused during Covid, look set to return provided that government guidelines allow. The first of these, on Tuesday, October 19, will feature local writer Lucy

Jago with her colourful historical novel about the intrigue and skullduggery at the heart of the Jacobean Court. A juicy tale to get the teeth into after a tasty pre-talk meal.

There is no Literary Lunch on Monday – the day competition winners are announced and congratulated at the Prize Giving and Poetry Reading.

And Thursday is devoted to the younger generation– just one of the many educational projects WFL support is a speaker event for Year 6 children, this year featuring Lucy Strange.

Tickets go on sale on Monday, September 6, with priority booking (for Friends) starting the week before – on Tuesday, August 31. Members of the media were allowed on to the scaffolding erected at the West Front of Wells Cathedral to take a closer look at the conservation work being undertaken. Cliveden Conservation is cleaning and repairing stonework and sculptures to help safeguard the West Front for the future.

Cathedral Bounce Back success WELLS Cathedral has passed its Bounce Back Appeal target of raising £150,000.

The appeal was launched last summer to make up for the shortfall in income as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown.

A Sponsored Pilgrimage in June from Glastonbury to the Cathedral, which raised more than £4,500, meant that the target figure was not just met, but surpassed.

Chance to plan for new-look skatepark THE Wells Skatepark Community Group (WSCG) has announced that the land where the current skatepark is located has been secured.

It means that the group no longer needs to look for a new location and can start planning how to redevelop the existing site, near Waitrose.

There has been strong support for efforts to create a modern skatepark in the city from Wells, Mendip and Somerset councillors, the Connect Centre, parents, riders and Wells residents, who have recognised the importance of the project.

WSCG says that Wells is long overdue a quality space for, in particular, young people to thrive, improve mental health, physical fitness, create social connection and ultimately have fun.

It has engaged three skatepark construction companies to discuss costs and timescales for a new-look skatepark.

Countdown to Moon landing ARTIST Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon artwork will be landing in Wells in the autumn.

The giant structure will be suspended from the roof of the Nave at Wells Cathedral from October 12 to November 3.

by Helen Sharman, the first British astronaut, and musical entertainment in Dark Side: the Pink Floyd Show.

The Museum of the Moon can

Mixed emotions at departure

Process starts to find next bishop

On July 14, Bishop Peter and his wife Jane moved out of The Bishop’s Palace. The day before they left, Bishop Peter wrote this farewell message:

FOLLOWING the retirement of Bishop Peter, the process to select the next Bishop of Bath and Wells has begun.

Simon Hill, Archdeacon of Taunton, is chairing the Vacancy in See Committee, which is responsible for drawing up a document outlining the diocese’s hope for a new bishop.

He said: “Selecting a bishop is a long and complex process following a national timetable. It is envisaged that interviews will take place in the spring of 2022.”

TOMORROW the removal firm come to the Palace to load up our belongings and take us to Surrey where we will make our new home. So today Jane and I went to the Cathedral for the last time before we move. The anthem was Psalm 24 which begins with the words: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” Those are words that have become more real for me in the seven years I have been Bishop of Bath and Wells.

Driving around Somerset has taken me though some of the most beautiful countryside, and again and again I have been delighted and amazed by stunning sunsets, glorious beaches and astounding views.

All this has been a constant reminder that the Lord is the Creator of all things, and that creation reveals the glory of the Lord. Truly the earth is the Lord’s and everything in it.

We are sad to be leaving the diocese and the many friends we have made here. Wells has been our home and it is a beautiful city in which to live. We shall

However, as we drive across the drawbridge for the last time we will do so with grateful and joyful hearts, knowing that the Lord goes before us and knowing it won’t be too long before we come back to visit Wells once more.

THE latest winner of the Wells Loyalty League draws is a regular visitor to the city from the Midlands.

Julie Fox had a caravan at Rodney Stoke for 25 years and grew to love Wells during that time.

She still has relatives in the area, and makes good use of the city’s independent businesses when she comes to visit.

Completed cards are drawn each month and the winners given five £10 vouchers to spend in shops run by league members.

Julie said: “I’m delighted to have won in the loyalty scheme and look forward to receiving the vouchers which I will spend on my next trip, which is early August.”

Provisional date for post office counters

Ted and the troublesome blade of grass that had to be removed

Problem solved as 20cm blade of grass pulled out

POST office services are set to be provided in Natural Pets of Wells in September.

It is hoped that the two post office counters due to be installed in the pet shop in Queen Street will be operational from Monday, September 6. They will replace the temporary post office at Wells Bus Station which is due to close on Friday, September 3.

The counters will be providing services from Monday to Saturday, from 9am-5pm.

This will be an extra 10 hours of service a week than is currently offered at the bus station,

including Saturday afternoon and later closing.

Antoinette Chitty, Post Office Network Provision Lead, said: “We are delighted to announce our permanent plans for Wells.

The temporary solution will remain open until the new premises are ready.”

The Post Office said it was keen to restore services to the community as soon as possible, so has decided to go ahead with its plans, though it was running a consultation until July 27 to seek feedback from the public about the move.

When she found him retching and gulping she thought he was going to be sick but he brought nothing up. Instead he became quiet and looked very sorry for himself.

Once he arrived at the surgery Ted was a lot calmer. His owner had no idea what might have happened to him, but said he could be a bit mischievous and had a silly habit of chewing unopened cat food pouches!

He seemed very bright and well but he definitely didn’t like us feeling around his throat. We had a good look in the back of his mouth but couldn’t find any abnormalities.

Ted was sedated to let us have a better look in his throat.

We could see that his soft palate and larynx were very inflamed but couldn’t find the reason for this. We had very nearly given

up when we caught a glimpse of green underneath his soft palate – it looked like Ted had a piece of grass lodged right at the back of his throat and extending up into his nose. Using forceps, we were able to grasp and remove this and, to our surprise, pulled out a 20cm grass blade. It was no wonder he had been so distressed.

Ted was given an injection of an anti-inflammatory to reduce the irritation and swelling, had his sedation reversed and was awake within a few minutes.

We could almost see his relief with the grass blade removed.

Hopefully Ted has learnt his lesson and might stick to chewing just his food in future!

Derek and June Cooper pictured at their 50th wedding anniversary celebration with their eight grandchildren. ‘It was a fabulous night despite Covid at the Swan Hotel where Mark and his team gave us an evening to remember,’ said Derek. ‘Socially distanced we could only have 30 people but that didn’t dampen our spirits. We are so blessed to have six amazing children, eight wonderful grandchildren and so many friends.’ Instead of presents the couple asked for donations to Macmillan Cancer Support, and raised several hundred pounds.

Bellringers will be there to demonstrate their skills and visitors can have a go. All that… and a delicious home-made cream tea. Just turn up for church tours and cream teas, but tower trips must be booked.

Five Somerset artists on WAC shortlist FIVE artists from Somerset have been shortlisted in this year’s international open art competition organised by Wells Art Contemporary (WAC).

The multi-media, open competition results in an exhibition and prizes for outstanding contributions and this year the team are delighted that local artists, including Miriam Sheppard from Pylle and Joella Wheatley from Frome, are among the shortlisted candidates.

A distinguished panel selected 91 pieces of work from more 3,500 entries by 1,800 artists from around the world for an exclusive exhibition which is accessible online from Monday, August 2.

This complements the physical exhibition which returns to Wells Cathedral from Saturday, August 28, until Sunday, September 26, consisting of about 90 items in

Miriam said: “Entering WAC gives an artist the opportunity to be part of a high quality, diverse exhibition, showing work in a unique setting to a large audience. [My entry] Absence v is a shift in focus, as much about what isn’t shown as what is.”

Joella said: “The Wells Contemporary has always been a highly regarded exhibition to be shown at, given the high standard of works that have

previously been selected. I’m therefore thrilled and honoured to be joining this year’s show and can’t wait to see all the other pieces curated together, along with my painting Embody that should sit beautifully within Wells Cathedral’s atmospheric interior.”

A substantial grant of £15,000 has been secured from Arts Council England and, this year, the free exhibition will also coincide with the installation of a new Antony Gormley work that

will be exhibited on the West Front of Wells Cathedral.

Paddy O’Hagan, Chair of WAC, said: “Wells will become a must-visit destination for visual art lovers from August of this year with both the shortlisted WAC candidates on display and the new Gormley work installed on the Cathedral’s West Front. Great visual art is about starting conversations; pushing boundaries and provoking debate - and that’s what this collaboration with this great Gothic Cathedral has the potential to do.”

The prizes for this year’s competition include a top cash prize of £2,000; the opportunity to be showcased online by a Central London gallery, and a free two-week placement at the NG Art Creative Residency in Eygalieres, Provence.

WELLS Good Afternoon Choir will be starting up again in August at a new venue, St Thomas’ Church.

The relaxation of Government restrictions on indoor groups has given a green light to singing and choirs across the UK. Recognised as one of the leaders in choral singing, Bath-based Grenville Jones will be restarting and launching a number of new choirs across the West of England in the weeks ahead.

He said: “We certainly have not been idle during these last few months and plans are in place.

“My popular Good Afternoon Choirs in Devizes, Wells, Keynsham and Bath as well as South Gloucestershire, Frome, Yeovil, Bristol, Thornbury, North Somerset and Yate and Chipping Sodbury were all forced to stop.

“They will all restart with

the addition of nine new Good Afternoon Choirs for folks in Cheltenham, Swindon, Cirencester and Stroud, Salisbury, Taunton, Cheddar Valley, Truro and Falmouth.

“It’s been such a hard time for the members of our choirs who have desperately missed the singing and social friendships, but at last, we can look forward to being together again, singing, smiling and planning concerts which will support many local organisations and charities.”

Epic run a big boost for teenager in her quest to stay healthy AN epic 132-mile run has helped raise money towards an important piece of disabled equipment for a local teenager.

Olly Edwards, aged 42, ran from his home in Davidstow, Cornwall, to Wells Cathedral in support of Poppy Garton.

Poppy developed an acquired brain injury after a lengthy illness aged two that affected her kidneys and digestive system, and caused a stroke. Her present day challenges include physical limitation, specific cognitive difficulties and epilepsy.

The 16-year-old, who lives in South Horrington, said: “What most people take for granted, I either cannot manage or have to work extremely hard for. I really need an Innowalk to stay fit and healthy. I aspire to live as independently as possible and the Innowalk will help me to achieve that and avoid my condition getting worse leading to further limitation. My life is difficult enough.”

Olly’s fundraising will go towards the £24,000 Poppy hopes to raise for the Innowalk, which is like a disabled crosstrainer. Poppy and her family have already raised almost £9,000 through crowd-funding and charity grants and pledges, and are asking for more support from the local community.

Olly was born and bred in

Wookey, and like Poppy, is a former pupil at Wells Blue School. He moved to Cornwall with his family in 2015, but when he heard about Poppy’s fundraising effort, he jumped to support it. He said: “I have known Poppy and her family ever since she was a little dot, and I felt the Innowalk campaign was an absolute worthwhile cause that I had to support.”

He set out on June 9 with a 28-mile run to Lydford at the foot of Dartmoor. On day two – his birthday – he continued his run over misty Dartmoor to Chagford and into Crediton, completing a further 33.4 miles.

On the third day, Olly ran 33.7 miles, covering ground from Crediton to Taunton.

He finished his marathon the next day, clocking up an impressive 37 miles starting out at 6am and arriving in Wells in mid-afternoon, having been joined in Street by a supportive friend for the closing seven miles.

Olly had been preparing for months, even stashing energy food and water along the route to save carrying supplies, but nevertheless, he still developed sores from his backpack.

He said: “I really enjoyed the run. The last few miles were the worst though, as soon as I got closer to home, I mentally

Poppy’s mum Lisa said: “During lockdown it was amazing to see so many people keeping fit and active by walking and cycling, but for Poppy, she is unable to do those types of exercise for physical but also societal reasons. Poppy really could have benefited enormously from the Innowalk, a piece of equipment that is safe and secure for her to exercise in from home but crucially is not funded through the NHS or available in the local community.

“We have been fundraising

now for almost two years so really need the generous support of our local community to make this happen for Poppy, before she develops further contractures or deformities.”

Poppy now attends Treloar, a school for disabled young people, and is transitioning to Treloar College in September.

Increasing despair at unfinished work RESIDENTS of Vicarage Fields in Wells say they are losing patience with developer Crest Nicholson for not finishing work on their estate.

Wells Voice reported in April on the residents’ frustration about the issues they said needed attention, from unfinished roads and landscaping to an unsightly abandoned site compound.

A Crest Nicholson spokesman said at the time that the company was working on a programme for completion of the remaining works – but householders say nothing has yet been done apart from workmen spending two days starting on a footpath before leaving again.

Jason Pope, who lives in Godwin Close, has repeatedly demanded action from Crest Nicholson and local planning authority Mendip District Council, to no avail, and says the residents have been let down.

“Everyone comments on what a mess the estate is when they arrive,” he said.

“I feel Crest and Mendip have let the residents down and left us looking at an ugly development in amongst very expensive houses. We pay a considerable amount in council tax every month and the service level from Mendip has been poor to non-existent, insufficient planning officers and plans often overlooked like the location of the park.

“Crest and Mendip will not communicate with the residents, it’s a very poor situation and no light at the end of the tunnel.

“What do we need to do to get this finished? I am losing patience with Mendip and Crest.”

An unfinished pavement in front of the site compound at Vicarage Fields Waddington said that the “open scar” of the unfinished path means that things have actually been left in an even bigger mess than before.

“To make matters worse, the protective fencing they put around the works blew over the next time it got windy, leaving free access to the site compound and all the hazardous materials stored there,” he said.

“Numerous requests to Crest Nicholson to at least come and fix the fence went unanswered, and in the end a couple of residents, concerned for the safety of their own children, took it upon themselves to reinstate the fence.”

He said that after the previous Voice article, residents had been advised that a four-month plan for completion had been agreed, but that Crest and the district council were not now responding to requests for information.

Stan Gibby is equally unhappy at the lack of action, and the lack of response. He said: “In buying our house in Godwin Close my wife and I looked forward to a quiet, peaceful and friendly coexistence with our neighbours and fellow citizens. Instead we have had to suffer the avoidable hassle, upset and unhappiness generated by Crest Nicholson and Mendip District Council.

“The roads remain rough and unfinished, the public areas slummy and unsightly, including the overgrown and

messy builder’s yard. All that compounded by the disrespectful obduracy and intransigence of Crest Nicholson and Mendip District Council has produced

an atmosphere and mood of despondency and the loss in belief in the natures of businessmen and officials.”

A Crest Nicholson spokesperson commented: “We’re working closely with the local council to finalise the programme for the remaining works. Due to unforeseen circumstances there has been a short delay to the inspection of the hoggin path but we’re on track to begin remedial work on the public open space next month, with further remedial works on the roads and sewers scheduled for the autumn.

“We’d like to thank residents for their patience at this time.”

Health leaders say Covid risks remain PUBLIC health leaders in Somerset are urging people to proceed with caution and act responsibly with the easing of national Covid-19 restrictions.

From July 19, the majority of legal restrictions relating to Covid-19 were lifted, but the risks of Covid-19 have not gone away.

Somerset’s Covid-19 Local Engagement Board and the NHS in Somerset are reminding residents that everyone has a role to play in protecting vulnerable people and frontline workers as the country moves into this new phase.

Although case rates in Somerset are lower than the national average, case numbers of Covid-19 are still rising in the county and are expected to continue to rise for the time being.

Somerset County Council’s Director of Public Health, Professor Trudi Grant, said: “We know it’s been a tough 18 months but people in Somerset have done a fantastic job helping to keep infection rates down. While we all want to return to normal, we also have to remember that the behaviours we have adopted still play a key role in protecting ourselves and other people.

“The risks of Covid remain, and we recommend you continue wearing a face covering in indoor spaces such as in shops, on public transport or in healthcare settings. Please continue to wash your hands thoroughly and regularly, meet up outside rather

than inside, and, if you are inside make sure you let the fresh air in.

“Getting double vaccinated, self-isolating when required, and using rapid tests twice a week will also help limit the spread of the virus.”

Councillor Clare Paul, Somerset County Council Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “It is good news that the success of the vaccination programme in England means the majority of restrictions can be eased.

However, we all still have a responsibility to do everything we can to look out for one another.”

Clinical Director at NHS Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group, Dr Alex Murray added: “We have seen a fantastic response in the local take-up of the Covid vaccination and we want to thank everyone who has supported the programme and had their jab so far. All adults aged 18 and over can get their jab, and we urge anyone who has not yet had their vaccine, to book an appointment through the National Booking Service or go to one of our walkin clinics.

“Over the past few weeks, we have seen an increase in demand on all healthcare services and it is really important that we continue to help protect the most vulnerable people and our health and care teams by following the latest recommendations to restrict the spread of coronavirus and have your vaccine when you are offered.”

An industrial specification ventilation system has been installed at Priory Dental in Priory Road, Wells. Dean and Ben Lovelace of Shepton Mallet company Lovelace Construction managed the project, which will reduce the risk from Covid and reduce the time required between appointments at the dental surgery.

Action in effort to cut CO2 emissions MENDIP District Council has announced a number of initiatives to encourage behaviour change as it tries to drive down CO2 emissions.

These include a ‘Climate Action Pledge Card’ which suggests lifestyle swaps, such as buying local produce, planting bee-friendly flowers, and switching to a green energy supplier. Every pledge residents sign-up to will make a difference to their carbon footprint, and to Mendip’s overall emissions.

The council has also launched a £50,000 Climate and Ecological Emergency Fund, where community organisations can apply for up to £2,000 to support eco projects such as tree planting, sustainable food production, greener travel and renewable energy schemes.

The installation of electric vehicle charging points in council-owned car parks, including in Wells, is due to begin shortly with partners Franklin Energy, encouraging drivers to switch from fossilfuelled vehicles to cleaner electric ones.

Also at council-owned car parks, and displayed at Somerset Waste Partnership recycling centres, anti-idling signs have been installed, designed to discourage unnecessary engine idling and improve air quality.

Mendip is one of 300 councils nationwide to have declared a climate emergency. In February 2019 it pledged “to make best

endeavours to enable the district to become carbon neutral by 2030”. However recent modelling of a Future Emissions Pathway, produced by the council and adopted by Cabinet, showed the district is currently on course for a 30 per cent reduction in emissions – way off its carbon neutral target.

Mendip District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Strategic Policy and Climate Change, Councillor Tom Ronan, said: “The launch of the Pledge Card, the new eco fund and our air quality campaigns are of course welcome – but to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 we need an 80 per cent reduction in districtwide emissions.

“This can’t be done without more intensive efforts. It’s crucial we are honest with our communities so that they can join us in lobbying and demanding central government provide more support to make the necessary changes.

“We urgently need community and business buyin too, to make the massive behaviour changes that are needed. Time is running out.”

The Pledge Card can be downloaded from the council’s website. n The deadline for applications for the Climate and Ecological Emergency Fund, and the Communities Fund – both reported on in last month’s Voice – has been extended by a month to September 30.

High praise for people who have done so much to help THOMAS Sheppard, the High Sheriff of Somerset, has praised the work done by people in Wells to help others in the past 12 months.

He had asked Mayor of Wells Philip Welch to organise a tour of the city for him to learn more about its history and to meet some of those who have made a big contribution in the past year.

The visit took in the Town Hall, Wells Foodbank, the Connect Centre and Wells Almshouses.

He also met two of Wells Coronavirus Network’s vaccination team leaders, Carol Mohide and Jaime Day (the third, Judith Blake, was unable to be there). He was told how the work at West Mendip Hospital started with 35 volunteers and ended up with 150.

Carol said: “We had volunteers from all walks of life and all ages, and formed one great team with the doctors and nurses.”

Thomas was impressed with what he saw and heard during his day in Wells.

He said: “I am bowled over about how smoothly the vaccination programme worked.

Repair Cafe returning with new faces and new safety measures WELLS Repair Cafe is back… not that it ever really went away as, over the past 17 months, its fixers have continued to help many people with repairs of their lamps, mixers, vintage toy cars, computers, televisions, bikes and more.

But organisers have been making firm plans for a version of Repair Cafe, including refreshments, to take place on Saturday, September 4, from 10am to 12.30pm, at the St Thomas’ Hall in St Thomas Street in Wells.

A NEW Scrabble group is being set up in Wells, with sessions taking place at St Thomas’ Church Hall.

There will be an initial meeting on Friday, October 1, from 10am-11.30am to welcome new members, make friends, discuss the way forward and form a small committee.

Scrabble mornings will be at the hall in in St Thomas Street every first, third and fifth Friday from 10am-noon. All ages and abilities will be welcome for relaxing, fun mornings. It is hoped that an annual trip can be arranged with a Scrabble weekend away.

Author gives charity cheque for £1,500 FORMER grocer John Barkle has presented local charity Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) with a cheque for £1,528 thanks to the success of his first book.

Wells Voice reported in March on the publication of John’s book, Memories of a Village Grocer.

It recounts his days as a young boy in Ditcheat, his years in the shops in Pilton and Wells, his amateur dramatics in Croscombe, to his retirement and beyond.

It has been described as “beautifully written, full of anecdotes and village characters; a must read for anyone who remembers shopping in Barkles or who loves village life”.

John, who now lives in Westbury-sub-Mendip, dedicated the book to his late wife, Elizabeth, who was also a keen supporter of CHSW. Together they visited its local

New ground rent Bill likely to have significant implications

Councillor elected as another resigns FORMER Wells city councillor Tony Robbins is a councillor once more after winning the St Thomas Ward by-election on July 13.

Mr Robbins (Liberal Democrat) received 482 votes, with Denise Denis (Wells Independents) getting 348, and Mandy Thomas-Atkin (Conservative Party) 174.

There may now have to be another by-election in the St Thomas Ward, though, following the resignation as councillor of Oliver Hartley, who was deputy mayor. If ten electors request a vote then a by-election will be held, otherwise a new councillor can be co-opted.

Mr Robbins had himself resigned from the council in late 2019, and since then, a further eight city councillors have resigned: Celia Wride, Pamela Crummay, Joe Parker, Andrew Fawcett, Chloe Rees, Geoffrey Dickson, Jennifer Linsdell and Mr Hartley.

Another councillor, John Osman, is currently on a sixmonth leave of absence.

Town Clerk Steve Luck said of Mr Hartley’s resignation: “Unfortunately Oliver Hartley has resigned due to work and personal commitments. He felt he was unable to give the time

needed, we are all very sorry to see him leave.”

Those who have resigned have all had their own reasons, said Mr Luck, with some resignations being unavoidable such as people moving away and taking on new jobs.

He added that there was a large changeover of councillors at the four-yearly elections in May 2019, and that some of the new intake might have been surprised at the time and work involved in being a councillor.

He pointed out that the council will also take on more responsibilities if there is local government reorganisation in Somerset.

“Put it all together and it has resulted in a lot of changes,” he said.

“Having said that the staff are very experienced and the work of the council continues with the remaining councillors working hard.”

The position of deputy mayor was due to be considered at the city council meeting on July 22, with nominations being sought from councillors, followed by a vote if necessary. n Celia Wride has become a councillor again, joining St Cuthbert Out Parish Council. She is a councillor for the West Ward.

JULY saw the government introduce the Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Bill into the House of Lords. The main objective of the Bill is to restrict the amount of ground rent a freeholder can charge leaseholders in new long residential leases to one peppercorn per year.

The Bill also prohibits the charging of administration charges in relation to those peppercorn rents.

The term ‘Ground Rent’ is a periodic payment payable by leaseholders which creates an income stream for landlords of let residential buildings. The Bill is incredibly important as it abolishes ground rents and therefore cuts off the income stream that supports the current leasehold system, thus making freehold investment opportunities unattractive to potential investors.

If investors are not incentivised to purchase leaseholds for their ground rent financial return it will assumably alleviate the need for them to appoint managing agents, who again charge leaseholders additional fees for dealing with the administration of collecting those ground rents.

This would be hugely beneficial to the people living in the leasehold properties but would remove a major income stream for companies that have been set up to assist landlords in collecting this rent.

It will be essential that

New legislation will restrict the amount of ground rent a freeholder can charge leaseholders developers obtain the necessary legal advice in advance of granting any leasehold interests to buyers in the future as a breach of the ground rent restrictions will be considered a civil offence and will attract a financial penalty of between £500 and £5,000.

The duty to enforce the Bill has been placed upon Trading Standards authorities in England and Wales.

Under clause 15 of the Bill, it also allows a provision for leaseholders to recover unlawfully charged ground rents through the First-tier Tribunal for a declaration as to whether the lease contains any term relating to a prohibited ground rent. The provision is however silent as to whether the landlord would have to refund any prohibited payments.

Delays could see flats replace care units

Local Democracy Reporter PLANNED extra care units in a major Wells development could be replaced with more conventional housing due to ongoing issues surrounding phosphates on the Somerset Levels.

Crest Nicholson South West was granted permission in April 2013 to construct 143 new homes on the former Nutricia site on the A39 Glastonbury Road.

The Vicarage Fields development was also due to include a 64-bed care home (which officially opened in late-April) and 22 extra care units, providing supported accommodation for the over-55s.

But the developer has now applied to scrap this latter proposal, arguing delays surrounding phosphate mitigation mean this aspect of the development is no longer viable.

Following the Dutch N court ruling, Natural England wrote to Somerset’s four district councils in October 2020, raising concerns over the high levels

The councils were urged to undertake a habitat regulations assessment (HRA) before making a decision on any planning applications which may lead to an increase in phosphates – leading to huge numbers of decisions being delayed.

The four councils have adopted a ‘phosphate calculator’ as a short-term fix, and wrote to the government in March urging action and guidance, arguing

that around 11,000 new homes were being held up.

The Woodsome Estate, working with Crest Nicholson, put forward proposals in early-2020 to convert the extra care section of the site (near the tennis courts) into 23 flats – but Mendip District Council has yet to make a decision on this matter.

Mr Cridland said that replacing the extra care units with standard residential accommodation was in keeping with the site’s intended use for housing of some description.

He said: “A total of 40 per cent of the dwellings will be affordable.

“However, we will use reasonable endeavours to secure grant funding with the object of delivering 100 per cent affordable housing.”

Mendip District Council is expected to make a decision on the plans later in the year.

n MESSAGE FROM THE MP

Degree of risk in opening back up but other factors to consider I AM writing this just as the last of the coronavirus restrictions have been lifted, and while this doesn’t feel as significant as perhaps earlier in the summer, there is now a big shift from Government legislation to personal responsibility.

From what I can gather both in Westminster and in Wells, the vast majority of people are deciding to continue to wear a face covering in certain indoor settings and taking other precautions to protect not only themselves – but others.

We are at the point of this pandemic where we have the protection of the vaccine and therefore hospitalisations and deaths are remaining low. It is true – of course – that infections are rising, and I know this is

News from Wells MP James Heappey causing some anxiety but as long as everyone who is eligible gets their vaccinations as quickly as possible, the fear of severe pressure on the NHS should not come to fruition.

There is a degree of risk in opening back up but there are also other factors to consider,

including the impact on businesses, livelihood, and treatment of other conditions in hospitals.

As the Chief Medical Officer said there is no ‘perfect’ time to remove restrictions, but there is evidence that there is merit in doing so in the warmer weather.

At the time of writing, we are at the extreme end of that with a heatwave across the country.

Another of the concerns from constituents (and it is well covered in national news) is the amount of people who are being told to self-isolate from the NHS Covid-19 app. While I know this is frustrating (I have been on the receiving end myself), this shows the track and trace system is working. However, it is also important we recognise the risk

factors are significantly lower for those who have received both vaccines and how this impacts workplaces, including staffing at hospitals and doctors’ surgeries.

I am acutely aware of this and so vehemently welcome the adjustment of the self-isolation rules on August 16 when those who have been vaccinated will rely on testing, rather than staying at home.

As always with these things, the dates raise questions but even the extra few weeks allows us to continue to vaccinate at pace and ensure as many adults as possible have had the opportunity to get their jab and not be forced to miss work due to being ‘pinged’.

I know the past 18 months have been anything but normal and the numbers on the news can feel scary, but we should not underestimate what a game changer the vaccine is, and I very much hope this is the beginning of life returning to normal – albeit having to live with Covid-19 as part of our lives as we do other viruses and illnesses.

Hospice shop makes appeal for clothing THE Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) shop in Wells has issued an urgent appeal for donations of summer clothing.

The shop in Queen Street has experienced a surge in demand for good quality second-hand clothing since reopening in April and is asking people to consider donating any unwanted items.

Shop manager Rhiannon Bullock said: “We have been very busy since the easing of lockdown and while we have a great choice in store right now, we know we are going to need more summer clothing to meet the demand of the next few weeks.

“We think that because of the lockdown last summer, people didn’t refresh their wardrobe as much as normal. Then with lockdown in the early part of this year, they weren’t able to have a clearout and donate any preloved summer clothing. If anyone has

any men’s or women’s clothing they no longer wear but would like to donate, please drop it off at the shop.”

The shop is also in need of children’s toys and bric-a-brac and donations can be dropped off at the shop from 9am-5pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

“We have donation bags at the shop if needed and suggest people phone ahead if they are planning to make a special trip or donating a lot of stock,” added Rhiannon.

Everything sold in the shop helps CHSW provide vital care to local children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

The charity’s three hospices – including Charlton Farm in North Somerset – rely almost entirely on voluntary donations.

Connecting with family and friends, volunteering, taking up a hobby or joining a group can help to reduce loneliness.

Volunteering is a great way to develop your work skills and work experience while having fun, build up your confidence and lead to new friendships.

Good places to look for community activities and groups to join include: l Local libraries and community centres l Newspapers l Noticeboards in shopping centres, and l Health services.

Relationships and friendships are a basic human need. But friendships are unlike family relationships because we choose to enter into them. We choose the community to belong to and build relationships that could last a lifetime.

Mini Police ready to take up their duties

News from the local policing team with PCSO Leann Chinnock A COLLEAGUE and I attended St Cuthbert’s Junior School in Wells on July 6 to conduct the Mini Police interviews, which all the children taking part were very excited about the prospect of wearing a Mini Police uniform.

Thirty children had applied, and in the end 16 children were selected to start the programme in September.

Hopefully we will this time be able to complete the full programme as when we first introduced the Mini Police to St Cuthbert’s, it all came to a sudden stop due to Covid restrictions.

The programme follows a set criteria divided up into terms in which the children learn about all the different roles within the police, road safety, and online safety.

They can gain the Duke of Cornwall’s Home Award; this award is based around how to be prepared at home and react to emergencies, and help in their communities, with the Mini Police coming up with ideas on how they would like to help.

Previously the children had collected items of clothing for the homeless and donated them to the Elim Connect Centre in Wells.

We will hopefully build up a relationship with a care home here in Wells, where the Mini Police can come in and talk with the residents, helping with gardening, having tea and cake, and providing a small Christmas Carol service.

The Mini Police may have the opportunity to meet other police officers in different departments including the dog section and mounted division.

This programme helps to build up relationships with the younger generations and provide them with skills and confidence within their communities and each other, supporting positive relations with all generations and people.

The residential visits planned for some of the children at St Cuthbert’s CofE Junior School were not able to go ahead due to Covid restrictions – so the activities were brought to the school instead. An outdoor adventurous week was organised to support pupil mental health through the promotion of physical health. Children were engaged in activities such as climbing walls, archery, orienteering and team building.

It was a natural step for them in 2020 to begin collaborating in paint, and both artists feel strongly that the process has helped keep them connected and centred during a chaotic time.

They say that the resulting body of energetic, mainly abstract work captures the sheer joy of sharing the creative process as well as becoming an unconscious record of negotiation, humour and of testing and respecting their artistic boundaries.

People will be able to judge the outcome for themselves when the Inside Out exhibition opens at the Heritage Courtyard Gallery in Wells in August.

New app guide to open studios

COULD this be Britain’s stinkiest museum? This summer, visitors to Brunel’s SS Great Britain in Bristol are promised more smells and sounds than ever before as they explore the historic ocean liner and two family-friendly museums.

Natalie Fey manages interactive experiences for visitors. She says: “They can try out the bunks and cabins for size, wander among the sounds and smells imagining what a 60-day voyage would have been like, and spot rats scurrying about in the galley.”

The smells and sounds extend to the two museums on site. The Dockyard Museum brings engineering to life with the interactive propeller lifting frame. In the Being Brunel museum, step aboard the shaking broad gauge carriage to experience the bumpy railway lines of Victorian times.

Summer activities from family trails to dragon arts and crafts THIS summer holiday, The Bishop’s Palace in Wells will be offering plenty of fun family events and activities to keep locals and tourists entertained.

The fun started on July 24, when the summer family trails began – families can collect a trail, which will be different each week of the holidays, leading through the site, from the Ticket Office, or download from the website, and once completed there will be a reward of a prize on the way out.

There will be some Escape Room Family Fun in the Palace buildings on July 27, entitled ‘Bishop’s Code’; it’s 1953 and Bishop Bradfield is getting ready to leave for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. He has locked something very important in the Palace’s safe and he cannot remember the code. Aimed at families with children aged 5-12, the sessions are on a drop-in basis from 10.30am-3.30pm.

THE Summer Reading Challenge theme this year is Wild World Heroes.

Wells Library is holding wild craft sessions on Saturdays August 14, August 21 and August 28, from 10.30am. Children are invited to go along on one of those days and make something wild. What will it be? A spider? A bug? A bird?

If they have not already joined the Reading Challenge, they can sign up and see if they can read six books by September.

Have you heard the story of the Dinder Dragon and Bishop Jocelyn who once lived at The Bishop’s Palace? On August 17, the Palace’s Dragon Day will celebrate the historic local legend of the Dinder Dragon and Bishop Jocelyn through arts and crafts.

To finish the holidays, the Palace will be holding its Medieval Weekend from August 28-30, when medieval re-enactment troupe Bowlore Medieval will provide daring displays of medieval weaponry including sword-fighting, archery, and axe and stick fighting.

All of the above activities are included with any valid admission ticket to the Palace, including the annual People’s Ticket, which costs just £15 for 12 months.

Sculpture trail showcases African artists A NEW exhibition of garden sculpture is to open at The Bishop’s Palace in Wells.

Curated by African Masters of Stone, the exhibition will feature a range of contemporary sculptures by Zimbabwean artists. It will take place from July 31 to October 1.

African Masters of Stone provides a platform for artists to present their work to a wider audience and the artists themselves are then able to continue a sustainable living and receive the artistic credit they deserve. The organisation also donates 10 per cent of its profits to charities fighting poverty, malaria and HIV in developing countries.

The artists are formally known as second and third generation sculptors of the Shona sculpture movement.

Laura Richards, Visitor Experience Manager at the Palace, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting this exhibition of highly skilled, but underrecognised sculptors, which will have great appeal for our visitors along with the intrinsic artistic merit to complement our gardens.”

The exhibition will be made up of 10 sculptures which will be set amongst the gardens of The Bishop’s Palace, with sculptures appearing in the formal gardens, in flower beds, by the well pools and in the outer gardens.

The exhibition is included in standard admission to the Palace & Gardens and all works will be available to purchase.

THE Wookey Annual Duck Race is back. The fun family event will return to the River Axe by Wookey Church Hall on Friday, September 3.

There will be food, a bar, stalls and more open from 5pm, with the first race at 5.30pm.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS U3A AFTER Wells u3a’s very successful contribution to u3a day on June 2, they have taken their promotional display to the Cathedral on July 24 for Wells Community Day. This is all leading to new members joining us as we are gradually getting back to meeting up again in person or larger outside groups.

Out and About Group are getting together for the first time in a year with a bring and share lunch in a member’s garden when they will hear plans for visits later in the year to Wells Almshouses and the Blue Glass Factory.

Cards for Pleasure Group has started playing again after a long break of 15 months now that the Conservative Club is open again. They play with a variety of games using two or three tables, including Canasta, Cribbage, Bezique and Spite and Malice.

The only change is that we now meet on Thursday instead of Monday evening.

Reading with Pleasure – Being used to meeting face to face, they had a late start of using Zoom, but thanks to Zoom they have managed to keep the group going. The attendance at their meetings has been excellent, and it is obvious that everybody is enjoying seeing each other and discussing the different books they have chosen.

The group meets on the last Thursday every month. They wish to have both women and men in the group, and would welcome a new man to keep the balance. If there is a man who would like to join this group from September, please contact the group leader’s representative via Wells u3a website. There

Such a strange concept I’m sure you agree but let me tell you how our group of athletes has been functioning lately. We play in sixes, predetermined through emails and in two groups.

Arriving at the Blue School fully masked up we go to our allocated court where we are met by one of the supervisors. We tried playing three a side but it was disastrous so two people sit out whilst the other four play. After the prescribed hour the supervisor comes in and, with a javelin from the store, pierces the bubble and we all go home saying “Such fun”.

croquet group will start again the day after Freedom Day on Tuesday, July 20, as usual and thereafter on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month on the Palace lawns. The club itself said goodbye to Bishop Peter (who was our President) on June 25.

Painting for Pleasure – are still circulating our solitary works throughout members and have some people signed up to join us once we can share the air in St Thomas’ Hall. We are still open for new members possibly inspired by the BBC4 Joy of Painting to have a try.

Art Appreciation – The hopefully final Zoom meeting was held on Monday, July 5, when the group watched and discuss Cocktails with a Curator: Guardi’s Regatta in Venice and View of Cannaregio Canal in Venice. The session finished by going through many of Guardi’s works and commenting on how the group viewed them. It is very much hoped for the group to meet in person in September in Seager Hall to continue to study many famous pictures and artists.

JULY’S meeting – which has now returned to the first Tuesday of the month – was a circular outdoor Treasure Hunt following rhymed clues around the moat, marketplace and surrounding areas. Members sped (or ambled) along the route, which was a very closely fought contest with the winners triumphant by half a mark. Over 20 members took up the challenge, and then gathered together for a natter and drink. We had hoped to return to the museum this month, but this now looks set for September.

Our August meeting will be an Afternoon Tea in the newly revamped Museum Garden which we are all looking forward to admiring. We had hoped to be able to celebrate 10 Years of Wells WI in style last year – but we are excited about meeting together again without any number restrictions. The ending of lockdown and friendship are cause enough to celebrate in style so for once we will not be doing the actual catering.

All our subgroups are thriving (although it’s perfectly acceptable to just attend the monthly meetings). The two book clubs have continued to thrive throughout lockdown but are looking forward to a joint meeting at the Festival of Literature. Walking netball has kept members moving and we now have a small but enthusiastic cycling group who are exploring the Syren Stones mentioned on the recent heritage walks round the city. The ‘Bloomin’ Fun’ gardening group has been enjoying tea and cake in members’ beautiful gardens and sharing plants, and a number of members attended a session at a local cooking school. The photography group’s challenge this month is ‘reflections’. The discussion group are delighted to be able to return to Wells Cinema to see Supernova this month.

Some of us wouldn’t necessarily go as far as that since convululus is one of those tenacious and frustrating plants we call weeds. Satisfaction in tackling it is rare as there is always that last remnant of teasing string entangled in the

root system of a favoured plant.

Certainly it would appear in pretty well every gardener’s list of pernicious weeds.

I was once told that excavators at work on the construction of Portbury Dock in Bristol found roots of bindweed over 40ft down.

Which just underlines the point that what we call weeds are true survivors, inherently vigorous, feisty and only surrendering after a fight. And, unlike Mrs Fish, we probably spend many an ill-tempered hour on hands and knees grubbing, gouging, forking and yanking what are basically wildflowers which colonise our verges and hedgerows to delightful effect.

This year Goosegrass or Cleavers has been rife for some reason and has blossomed most prettily alongside the Palace Moat with its clouds of tiny white flowers softening the railings by the path.

On the other hand we all have a favourite weed, as we call them,

In this garden, Herb Robert and Enchanter’s Nightshade only get attention when they have finished their natural cycle. In the meantime they prettily fill gaps in the borders. Moreover, room has been found for a couple of plants of Ragwort on which some relocated Cinnabar Moth caterpillars have been at work.

While Nature’s frantic season continues apace, what of the club’s activity? In June, nearly 40 of us met together in Stoberry Park’s extensive and brilliantly planted garden. A morning when the sun shone, the flower borders and beds were at their peak and we seized the opportunity to do much catching up for the first time this year as social contact has been so tricky.

Another chance was taken last month as guests of James Cross, Head Gardener at The Bishop’s Palace on an evening visit to the stunning gardens. As for August, we shall be visiting Milton Lodge Gardens, which always gives pleasure.

Things are slowly and still tentatively returning to familiar patterns. Tidying the borders continues but our regular seasonal meetings in the form we are accustomed to are still some time ahead. The website www. wellsgarden.club will post details of future plans.

‘Shambles’ a familiar feature for 400 years FROM the 1300s to 1756, Wells city records show that the High Street, as well as having solid built structures, had “shambles” or “benches” down the middle of the street to accommodate the sale of meat, fish and bread.

The earliest record dates back to 1280 when Nicholas The Baker leases “half a bench” in a location of Middle Row, opposite what is now Guardhouse Lane.

In 1320 records show Alan de Boys, a “spicer”, leasing a “bench”.

In 1386 a group of vicars acquire 35 High Street (the approximate location of Mountain Warehouse) and erect two butcher’s stalls and a fishmonger’s stall in front of it.

In 1387 William Stephens leased a butcher’s stall in the street from the “Vicars” for 4s.

In 1389 “two benches in the High Street in two rows” were leased to John Brackele, butcher.

In 1498 Richard Frempton,

‘In 1386 a group of vicars acquire 35 High Street and erect two butcher’s stalls and a fishmonger’s stall in front of it’ together with his wife and Julian, his son, lease from “The Vicars of New Close one butcher’s stall in front of the inn called the Crystofer”.

That is just a glimpse into the Medieval High Street but spare a thought for one citizen of Wells called Adam le Carleton, who in 1351 fell foul of the authorities when “Between Midsummer and Michaelmas” he put up a “cooking house” in the middle of the High Street.

All was well until 1358 when there was a precept, an order, issued to le Carleton in response to complaints to the Sherriff alleging that le Carleton was

obstructing the High Street, “where dwell all keepers of inns for reception, lodging and rest and all shopkeepers and butchers in the middle of the King’s (Edward III) High Street of Wells to the hindrance of the whole community of England coming, passing and abiding there”.

Later in 1358 Adam le Carleton and Simon Kegworth are summoned to appear before representatives of the King who instruct them to destroy the cooking house at their own expense at which le Carleton is described as being “at mercy” (without defence).

In 1571 the Corporation of the city builds a “meat and fish” shambles in the High Street called Middle Row situated in the middle of the street, approximately where the modern Boots the Chemist is today, and these were removed in 1768.

In 1572 a Town Hall was added over these shambles, and

in 1591 “Henry Paynes’s shop in the shambles is taken in hand and converted to a prison”.

The Commonwealth Survey of 1649 shows that there are three shambles in the High Street, and a record of 1660 shows that these are described as “a splott of ground with shambles built upon it called the ‘Fish Shambles’.”

In 1822 the site is described as “now a void piece of ground on which formerly stood four tenements called the Shambles but now used and converted into pig pennings”.

In 1834 these pig pennings were still in place but they were removed by 1862.

The Simes Plan of Wells (1753), of which there are five known original copies in existence, one in the Wells & Mendip Museum, shows a stylised representation of the City of Wells but the Shambles and Middle Row are clearly shown.

Friends and team-mates temporarily became opposition when Wells played Wells in an U13s fixture

Plenty to enjoy in busy month CRICKET IT has been an action-packed month for Wells Cricket Club with great club, team and individual performances.

Wells CC’s newly formed U11 Girls Softball squad entered their first tournament and went on to win the Lady Taverners trophy at Claverham CC. Wells U13s have continued their success after reaching the semi-finals of the district cup with further wins in the league. The most competitive fixture naturally was the Wells v Wells fixture where friends and team-mates temporarily became opposition.

On league debut Edwin Brewster completed something extremely rare, taking his first wicket (bowled), with his first

ball, in his first over, in his first ever match.

Wells CC hosted its first Family Fun Day on July 3. More than 75 youngsters aged 5-16 played a range of games from softball All Stars games through to kick-ball cricket, the parents v kids matches and a T20 fixture.

A highly enjoyable day and absolutely something Wells CC will be replicating in the future.

In recent weeks the 1st XI have chalked up their first victories of the season. The away win v Winscombe was a close fought one-wicket win with Henry Hunt scoring 79*.

At home v Shapwick & Polden 2nd XI, Dan Vassalli scored a monster 153 runs in 29C heat to set Wells up for what would eventually be an unbeaten 308.

The 2nd XI have continued to

notch wins v Peasedown St John, Harptree Villages and Cranmore but were outclassed by newly reformed Glastonbury.

Good progress is being made towards raising the full £30,000 required to build a training net facility. Recent support from Persimmon Homes and Somerset Community Fund as well as significant fundraising efforts and the recent Crowdfunder has meant the club is more than 80 per cent of the way to the target.

Wells CC are continuing with junior and senior training throughout the summer and are running a Summer Holiday Club suitable for current and new juniors for £15 per day.

14-year-old wins chance to play at Wimbledon TENNIS WELLS Tennis Club player Mark Preston will represent Somerset at Wimbledon this summer.

On July 10, Mark won the county final, beating competition from across the county at the Lawn Tennis Association largest national junior competition, The Road to Wimbledon. He will take part in the final tournament with a day out at the famous courts in August.

Mark is trained by Wells Tennis Club coach Kevin Durney

and is on the Somerset under 14s team. Kevin said: “These experiences are a once in a lifetime opportunity, a great achievement and very well deserved.

“Mark has put a lot of effort into improving his game and is a pleasure to work with on court.”

Mark, aged 14, said: “I’m really looking forward to playing at Wimbledon. Everyone has been really supportive, I’d like to thank Kevin, my coach. Now I just need to buy some white tennis shorts.”

THE highlight for many members at Mendip Golf Club was to see young Aimee Sawyer playing her first 18 holes for almost a year. Three days after winning the Ladies Club Championship last August, plus 3.5 handicapper Aimee was involved in a terrible accident leading to many months in hospital and a further long period of rehabilitation.

A very brave and determined young lady, Aimee faces further surgery but says that will now have to wait until she has had a summer’s golf. Within two weeks of that first round Aimee was back in First Team action for the Alliance A Team, recording a 7 and 6 win. What an inspiration to any young person facing a setback in life.

Four of Mendip’s Juniors played in the recent Somerset Girls Championships. Elevenyear-old Ffion Richardson playing in the 18-hole event won the best Gross and 15-year-old Polly Jones won the Stableford event, with 13-year-old Connie Cox third. In the 36-hole main Championship event, Ellen Reakes came fifth.

The Ladies had a fine win in the Rogers Cup, a Somerset County event, beating Taunton & Pickeridge 4-3 at neutral venue Bath. There were wins for Ellen Reakes, Jinhee Page, Chris Down and Anita Butcher. They now proceed to the next round where they play Farringdon. A special mention for Team Captain Marian Speed who whilst losing, that was after four extra holes.

153 men competed for the Jubilee Cup which resulted in a very close run thing with the top six players all carding net 69s with a further seven players on net 70. Matt Bendall was the winner of Division 1. Division 2 went to Stephen Cox. Division 3 was won by Robert Earney.

However the overall winner was John Cross.

The Mixed Team entertained Tidworth and Mendip gained a 4-2 win with victories for Julia and Mike Phillips, Pauline and Alan Williams, David and Lilian Peel and Alan and Ali Kay.
