Pressure for changes to city’s charter fairs TALKS are to take place about the charter fairs held in Wells every May and November after complaints from the business community.

Traders say that the twiceyearly fun fairs in the Market Place are bad for business, hitting shop takings and hotel bookings. With the fair licence

up for renewal next year, they are pressing for changes, such as moving the fun fair to a different location and having a medievaltype market in the Market Place instead.

“We feel that the manifestation of the charter fair as it is is bad for Wells,” said chamber of commerce chairman

Robert Powell, who raised the issue at a meeting of the city council’s city centre and open spaces committee.

“If it was a medieval market with hoop throwing, say, and everyone dressed up in medieval costume, it would be unique, Continued on page 6

Temporary traffic lights in place when work on North Road first started

Roads shut for weeks as gas pipes updated DRIVERS in Wells are facing weeks of diversions while gas pipes are updated.

During the work by Wales & West Utilities, North Road will be closed for six weeks and College Road for two weeks.

The company’s programme controller for Wells, Barry Sale, said: “We are working in Wells to upgrade more than 650 meters of old metal gas pipes in the area to new plastic ones. This £170,000 investment is essential to keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses – and make sure the gas network is fit for the future. Barring any unforeseen difficulties, we anticipate it will be finished in early September.”

He said that the work is taking place in three phases: n Phase 1 started on July 10 on Millers Gardens, and barring any unforeseen engineering difficulties, it was anticipated that this phase of work would take three weeks to complete. n Phase 2 started on July 24 on North Road. During this phase of work, in agreement with Somerset County Council and so that the local community, road users and workers are kept safe, there will be a road closure on North Road at its entrance to Stoberry Park School and the junction with Bath Road from July 24 to August 11, and between the entrance to Stoberry Park School and the junction with College Road from August 11 to September 1. A diversion route

will be signposted and barring any unforeseen engineering difficulties, it is anticipated that Phase 2 will take six weeks to complete. n Phase 3 will start on August 21 at the junction of College Road and North Road. During this phase, there will be a road closure on College Road from its junction with New Street to the junction with The Liberty.

Mr Sale said: “All local businesses will be open as usual while we’re working and we will accommodate trade deliveries where possible. We know working on roads like these is not ideal, but it really is essential to keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll be working hard to make sure that the work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible, whilst also keeping disruption to a minimum.

Hot Fuzz fans come to Wells for wedding A COUPLE will be getting married in Wells Town Hall on August 4, because they have fallen in love – with cult film Hot Fuzz.

Kate Heath and James Bradfield are such big fans they decided their wedding had to take place in the city where the film was shot.

“We are massive fans of the film,” said Kate, 30, who work in sales admin.

“We watch it all the time, and our life involves quotes from the film all the time. It’s a good movie, a happy movie. It’s funny.

I love the British humour.”

The pair, who live in Swindon, made the decision to marry in the town hall while sitting in The Crown, one of the settings for Hot Fuzz, after going on a Hot Fuzz walking tour.

They were also in the audience for the 10th anniversary open air screening of the film at The Bishop’s Palace in April.

Kate said: “We’re really grateful to Mandy and Dan at The Globe, who have just taken

over and have managed to plan a wedding breakfast for 73 people.

“They have also somehow managed to get St Austell’s Brewery to make us our very own ‘Hot Fuzz’ ale, brewed especially for our wedding day.”

An evening reception will be held at another film location, the

Swan Hotel. Kate said: “We’re trying to tie in places that feature in the movie. We’ve got little nods throughout the day to Hot Fuzz.”

One of those nods will be three Cornetto flavours incorporated into the wedding cake, a reference to the Cornetto Trilogy, as Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End – the series of films directed by former Wells Blue School pupil Edgar Wright – are known.

The day after the wedding James, 32, a graphic designer, will lead the wedding guests on his own version of the Hot Fuzz walking tour having learned all the tour facts and figures.

“It should be a really good weekend,” said Kate, who added: “We love Wells. We try to get down as often as we can.

If I could live there tomorrow I would.”

Lawrence Centre biggest beneficiary at charity lunch THE Lawrence Centre walked away with the lion’s share of the cash at the latest Wells SOUP lunch. The Wells-based charity that provides activities and support for frail, older people received a cheque for £325 after winning the biggest share of the audience vote.

Four charities each make a four-minute presentation at the

regular lunches organised by the Wells Independents in Seager Hall, Union Street. Audience members then vote for the one they deem the most deserving.

The other charities at the July lunch, who each received a cheque for £110, were the Friends of Mendip Hospital Cemetery, the local branch of Guide Dogs for the Blind, and

TS5C, the Somerset charity that sponsors young people in their chosen sport.

Delicious soup at the event was provided by Sadler’s Brasserie of The White Hart Hotel, bread was supplied by Waitrose, and drinks were courtesy of Morrisons.

Wells SOUP’s main sponsors are solicitors Chubb Bulleid.

New vinyl record store opens BEATLES fan Joann Parsons has opened a vinyl record and memorabilia store in Wells.

Ziggys Vinyl Destination, in Tucker Street, at the former premises of The Alchemists Tea Emporium, also has antiques, toys and T-shirts for sale.

“I love vintage stuff. I’m a bit like one of those hoarders – you get addicted,” said Joann, who lives in Polsham. “I’ve got loads of Beatles stuff. I love the Beatles.”

Joann fell for The Beatles while playing records before selling them to make sure that they were not scratched. She said: “I can’t get enough of The Beatles now. And they sell so well. They never let me down.”

Joann once worked at Reeve the Baker in Wells High Street before it was taken over by Mountstevens. She is a regular at the antiques fairs held in the town hall, and had a section at Wells Antique Centre in Mill Street before deciding that she needed more space.

Adrian Lawrence, owner of The Crown in the Market Place, says he will close the hotel to overnight guests if the fair goes ahead next May – even though it could cost him up to £6,000 in lost revenue.

“We have to refund people every year anyway,” he said.

“I don’t think a 2017-type fair is appropriate in Wells Market Place.”

He said hotel guests complained about the noise and disruption caused by the fairs, especially when the rides are being dismantled in the early hours.

Sally Jones, manager at Steamer Trading Cookshop, said: “The charter fair as it is at the moment doesn’t fit in with the city. It’s grown too big.

“It does affect trade. It does affect access for suppliers.”

The Wells May Fair and November Carnival Fair are Royal Charter Fairs granted by King John in 1201.

Mayor of Wells Councillor John North said: “We are very lucky to have the patronage of the Rogers family who bring the fair to the city twice a year.

“We want a fair that will attract people to the city, and we are always looking for ways to improve. We should always talk about how we can improve things.”

The city council is to hold meetings with fair representatives and Mendip District Council, which has responsibility for the licensing, to discuss the issue.

The Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain is the negotiating body for travelling showmen.

Its nominated member Shaun Rogers for James Rogers and Sons and fair historian Richard Green confirmed that talks are to take place but would not make any further comment at this stage.

A spokesman for Mendip District Council said: “As far as Mendip District Council are concerned there will be no changes made to the charter fair in Wells for the foreseeable future including a change of venue.”

Music event could get city rocking A TWO-DAY music festival could get Wells rocking next summer.

Music and theatre promoter Paul Toole is working on ambitious plans for an event featuring a range of top tribute acts and a couple of big name headliners.

He has already met officials from Mendip District Council – which would need to grant him an entertainment licence before it can take place – to discuss the plans.

“I’m trying to make the festival a little different to others locally, more of a show than a festival, but still with that easy going feeling,” he said.

“I think an event like this will bring the community together.”

Paul hopes to stage the festival on June 30 and July 1, 2018, on one of two sites he is considering in Wells, with 4,000 tickets available each day.

“There are many strict procedures from Mendip to follow but I hope to have everything in place and for tickets to be released by September or October,” said Paul, who many will know from his Christmas lights displays in Manning Close.

A Mendip District Council spokesman said: “We can confirm that we have had initial discussions with a local resident keen to stage a music festival in Wells next summer. If an event is to be staged, then a formal licensing application will need to be made. These applications are a public document which give local people the chance to comment on the proposals.”

Looking ahead after losing out on bid

WELLS may not have made it on to the shortlist of cities from which the City of Culture 2021 will be chosen – but there are still ambitious plans to enhance the area’s cultural activity.

Coventry, Paisley, Stoke, Sunderland and Swansea made it through to the final round of judging from 11 cities that put themselves forward.

The Wells bid team will now get detailed feedback on their bid from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport in early August. This will be followed by a meeting with Culture Minister Karen Bradley in the autumn to discuss how the ideas in the bid can be advanced.

Wells might host a “Not the City of Culture” Festival in 2021, while other projects that have already been implemented or are under discussion include: n A new Wells Cultural Forum with the aim of sharing ideas and improving coordination between arts groups, schools and the city’s festivals. n A new Theatre Festival to be launched in 2018 (see opposite). n An event involving the illumination of the exterior of prominent buildings to tell the stories of the city. n A permanent gallery at Wells & Mendip Museum which will tell the history of the city. n The opening up parts of The Bishop’s Palace previously

inaccessible to the public, including high level walkways, giving panoramic views of the city.

Wells City Council congratulated the bid team on their commitment and enthusiasm, but has sounded a note of caution about future developments.

In a statement responding to the shortlist announcement, it said: “The city council would recommend that the relevant planning authorities’ Conservation Officers be asked to carry out an impact assessment on the emerging project. If it is to go forward on a large scale it would be important to ensure that safeguards were in place, protecting our tiny medieval city centre from potential damage due to the proposed imposition of massive footfall, transport and other infrastructure, both temporary and permanent. There are also historic sites and rural features in the hinterland to be considered.”

There will be ongoing talks between the bid team, local authorities, Visit Somerset and the Wells City and Tourism Forum about the proposals.

Drop in price of car boot pitches FARMER Mike Phelps has dropped the price of pitches at the weekly car boot sales he started last month to entice more car booters to take part.

He says that there have been plenty of people turning up to see what is for sale but he would like to encourage more traders, so they will now be charged £5 for attending instead of £10. There were 19 at the event on July 15.

place on Saturdays at Palace Fields, which are also open to the public for all-day parking (7am-midnight) for £3 on Wells’ market days: Saturdays and Wednesdays.

“I thought there was a great need in Wells for parking,” said Mike.

“I want to help Wells.”

Funding agreed to save 67 bus THE 67 bus between Wells and Burnham-on-Sea, that has been threatened with closure since Webber Bus ceased operating last year, has been saved.

More stable funding was announced last week after parish and town councils from along the route contributed towards the subsidy the bus needs to

operate. The county council has also found more cash.

Wells MP James Heappey joined district and county councillors from along the route of the 67 bus to celebrate the saving of the service, and said: “Many people have campaigned for the route to be saved, now that it is, I hope they’ll all use it.”

Curtain to rise on city’s first theatre festival in 2018 DATES have been announced for Wells’ very first Theatre Festival in the city which will run from July 12-15, 2018.

The festival boasts as its patrons film, theatre, television and opera director Sir Richard Eyre and renowned actress and author Dame Judi Dench.

The programme will include nationally celebrated South West companies alongside international touring companies leading workshops and performances.

It is hoped that the festival will span a variety of venues across the city, both pop-up performances and venues and more traditional theatre spaces: from The Bishop’s Barn and Recreation Grounds to Wells Cathedral School, as well as a host of smaller venues.

At the core of the festival will be its ambition to bring world class performances to rural communities; as such, plans are afoot for part of the festival

to take place in neighbouring Shepton Mallet potentially involving creating a piece of site-specific theatre around the Shepton Mallet prison site.

Other productions include a community Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet production on the Cathedral Green, and a mystery play in Vicars’ Close.

There will be various children’s theatre performances, late night cabaret and workshops

by Sir Richard Eyre, Harry Burton on Pinter and Dominic Mapham on acting in the Globe Theatre.

Many other companies will be involved once negotiations start in the autumn.

Markethouse in Market Yard is run by Alex Silk, who already runs The Subhouse, and he said: “Our USP for this place us it’s an extension of The Subhouse’s environment with a difference.”

“The whole thing for me is about creating a buzz for Wells.

I want that mix and variety,” he said.

MP impressed on visit to Bigham’s site WELLS MP James Heappey said he was very impressed after visiting Charlie Bigham’s new food production campus in the old Dulcote Quarry.

Mr Heappey toured the campus alongside Charlie Bigham himself, chief executive Patrick Cairns and Mendip District Council chair of planning Nigel Hewitt-Cooper, and was quick to pay tribute to Bigham’s for not only creating a fantastic facility, but for bringing quality employment opportunities to the area.

“It’s a hugely impressive site.

They have taken a beautiful, but what is in construction terms probably quite a challenging site, and created a very impressive campus that fits perfectly with the landscape,” said Mr Heappey.

“It looks like it’s going to be a fantastic place to work so I think everyone at Bigham’s should be congratulated for that.

To have quality manufacturing jobs like this, and we should remember that these are properly contracted jobs with a company that is going to care for its employees, is hugely exciting for the Mendip economy.”

Initially Bigham’s is creating over 100 jobs with the intention of creating over 300 over the next few years.

About 100 people applied for a job with the company on the spot, and Bigham’s head of people Lauri Duncan has thanked the local community for its support.

“We absolutely loved meeting our new neighbours and we were completely overwhelmed with the response. The support we got from everybody who came was incredible, and it just reinforced to us that we absolutely made the right decision in basing our new kitchen in Somerset,” she said.

Charlie added: “Our Open Day was extremely successful with more than 350 local residents calling in to see us and we really could have not been made to feel more welcome.”

The new site is nearing completion with production due to start later in the summer.

Flypast to be a boat race day highlight A LANCASTER bomber is due to fly over Wells on Bank Holiday Monday as a highlight of this year’s Moat Boat Races.

The annual Wells Moat Boat Races take place on and around – and usually in – the moat which surrounds The Bishop’s Palace. Weather permitting the World War Two bomber, one of only two Lancasters remaining in airworthy condition, will fly directly over the Bishop’s Palace site during this year’s event.

Months of planning and preparation by the organisers, Wells Lions Club and Wells Air Cadets, will reach a watery climax on August 28, entertaining thousands of people and raising cash for local charities and good causes.

There will be a record number of races – 16 in total with the heats and finals – starting at 1pm and concluding around 4pm. And a record number of racers are expected to be taking part, with more than 20 teams competing for glory. All the rafts are constructed from empty oil drums lashed together with wood and rope, and each team spends months preparing and decorating them.

There will be plenty to entertain people throughout the day, from around 10am onwards.

In the Bandstand Park beside the moat, local charities will be manning fundraising stalls. Food and craft stalls and rides and slides for the children will add to

the attractions. A new addition this year will be a Go-Kart racing track from Tincknell Country Stores with all proceeds going to charity. Musical entertainment will be provided by Congresbury Brass Band (sponsored

by Bluebird Care Mendip) and Mendip All Drummers (sponsored by Shepton Vets).

Principal sponsor for this year’s races is once again The Swan Hotel. Their sales and marketing manager Natasha Mingo-West said: “The Swan Hotel is delighted to be the main sponsor of the Wells Moat Boat Races this year. We wish all the participants a safe passage. We’ll be raising a motley crew of our own to take part, and we’re also very pleased to be helping raise lots of money for local charities.”

THE sun shone as Year 13 students arrived at the marquee in the grounds of the Blue School to attend their Leavers Ball on July 14.

The marquee was awash with glitz and glamour as students celebrated the end of their post16 education.

More than 160 people enjoyed a three-course meal, catered for by Lisa Western, Charlie Chambers and their team from the school. The food, prepared by students on the Professional Cookery and Hospitality course, was exceptional.

Special awards were presented to a number of

students on the evening by Sally Vallis, Sixth Form Pastoral Head.

Recipients included Sam Hills, Lydia Dickson, Josh Higgs, Tess Townend, Ben Stitch, Georgia Kerr, Gabe Donoghue, Jack Cooper, Imi Read, Liberty Phillips, Richard Jones and Stella Cooper. After the presentations, students danced the night away to the disco sounds provided by Limited Edition.

“It was a wonderful evening and a great farewell to the students,” said Mrs Vallis.

Plaque theft mars unveiling of another NEWS of a mindless theft marred a community celebration.

The occasion was the unveiling of a Blue Plaque on Barclays bank in Wells Market Place by manager Alison Potter after a witty poem read by Town Crier Len Sweales.

The plaque is the latest in a series designed to tell local people more about the history of the place in which they live and create a tourist trail to benefit the city’s economy.

But after the unveiling the news that the previous plaque had been stolen was broken by Philip Welch, who is leading the plaque project on behalf of Wells Civic Society and the city’s Rotary club.

It tells how W G Grace, the world’s greatest cricketer, came to entertain the crowds in Wells with his batting prowess but was out for a mere three runs.

Fires prompt advice on how to stop arsonists WELLS Fire Station Watch Manager Chris Grantham has issued advice for deterring arsonists after a spate of fires in the city.

Fire crews were called out to several wheelie bin and rubbish fires in residential areas of Wells at the end of June and start of July. Most occurred in the early hours.

Crews also responded to a fire at the empty Mermaid pub site on July 17 that is believed to have been started deliberately, and has been referred to the police.

Chris said: “We have some simple tips which we urge residents to follow to deter arsonists and help people stay safe in their homes. Fires involving rubbish and bins can easily spread to your home so I am urging residents throughout Wells to adopt the following simple advice.” n Ensure your wheelie bin and black bags are not left lying around. n Put your wheelie bin or black bags out on the day of collection

and bring the bin back in as soon as possible. n If you are throwing out old furniture or other household items call your council to arrange a collection and keep them in a secure area until the collection takes place.

And who would buy one when the names of the owners are cast into the metal?

“What is particularly galling is that the civic society and Rotary club are voluntary groups who give their time and money for the benefit of the community.”

Making decisions on how money is spent This month the spotlight is on the city council’s chair of the finance committee IT’S a tough job but someone’s got to do it. Chairing finance meetings and being part of a group of people who decide where the city’s money is distributed is certainly a job open for scrutiny but it is vital.

At the head of the table is former mayor and local councillor Tony Robbins who alongside the finance officer and other councillors decide on local grants, maintain day to day facilities in Wells like the toilets and map boards, as well as ensuring the city is provided with what it needs to be prosperous.

Some of the income used to provide such facilities comes from the hiring of the town hall for things like weddings, dinner dances and group activities, the rent from properties owned

by Wells City Council, the allotments and the cemetery.

This income allows them to offer grants for facilities you may not even realise is funded by the local council. The skate park, Citizens Advice Bureau, even items like the street furniture you see all around Wells, this what the finance committee deal with on a weekly basis providing important and often taken-for-granted services in our city.

If you are a charity, voluntary or community organisation and you feel you do a service for the City of Wells then you will be considered for a small community grant. The process is fairly simple, it can be found on the Wells City Council website but you must be prepared to show how the organisation will benefit the community if you were to receive this grant, also you will be required to present your proposal at a committee

meeting. Don’t worry, they aren’t scary people, just people who want the same as you do for the community.

It is important that you are clear about your intentions and you are aware of the correct process to follow. The decision of the committee is final but don’t let that discourage you, sometimes other causes just may have to take priority.

So once a month the committee gather at Wells Town Hall to discuss these issues. Don’t be fooled by the assumption their meetings are something out of Hot Fuzz, it is for the greater good but no one loses a limb.

Those involved are easy to approach, easy to talk to and the office door is not far away. And next time you use one of those grit bins/dog bins or need to use the public toilets, just remember how they got there.

Priddy Rising opened the Saturday morning show

Diverse folk festival fizzes with energy THE village of Priddy baked in the July sun as the annual folk festival returned to the village green last month.

Regarded as a hidden gem of the folk music scene, the festival has been a part of Mendip hills life since 1991 when the Priddy school PTA started the event as a fundraiser in the village hall.

Organised and run by a group of volunteers dedicated to bringing good music into Priddy, it is a “not for profits” organisation with the aim of promoting music and arts and improving the environs of the village.

Two marquees provided the venues for shows by a wide variety of musicians from Anglo-Australian Bluegrass by Medicine Creek, gypsy swing from Ushti Baba, old English tunes with a 21st century dance feel from Gadarene and rebel folk from the self-declared ‘feral underclass’ band The Firepit

Collective. Some of the best folk acts from Britain and beyond took to the main stage including Flook, Mawkin, Jim Cauley and The Shee.

The Saturday morning show was opened by young musicians from Wells Blue School, who gave a rousing performance as Priddy Rising, opening procedures with Woody Guthrie’s ‘All you fascists are bound to lose’, while the Sunday morning hangovers – many brought on by the festival bar’s £3 a pint local ales and ciders – were swept away in a popular singing workshop.

There were also events in the Village Hall and Priddy Church, traditional dancing on the Market Square and a host of Somerset musicians performing in The Fringe Tent, as well as the legendary sessions in the Queen Victoria pub and an archaeological walk around the village.

New Mr England aims to inspire TRAILBLAZING Mr England Jack Eyers, the first amputee to win the title, wants to use his achievement to inspire others.

The 28-year-old model and personal trainer chose to have his right leg amputated at the age of 16 because of a rare birth defect that left the leg underdeveloped and painful.

He has been trying to break down barriers and change people’s perception of disability ever since.

“This is a very valuable platform to project my story and my message,” said Jack after

winning the Mr England crown at a ceremony in Birmingham on July 14.

The former Wells Blue School pupil, whose father Gerald still teaches there, just missed out on another major achievement when he finished third in British trials for the Paracanoe World Championships.

Jack achieved the qualifying time for the finals in the Czech Republic at the end of August, but only the first two boats go through. He is now on a talent programme with the British team in preparation for future events.

Wells tea towels WELLS Chamber of Commerce has started selling Wells merchandise.

Tea towels with a picture of the Market Place by Wells artist Chris Lee – which coincidentally was used to illustrate last month’s story in Wells Voice about the Half Mile Gallery in the city centre – have gone on sale in the museum, the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen Gallery, The Laundry and Queen Street Delicatessen.

The tea towels cost £9.95, with any profits being reinvested in tourism initiatives for Wells.

Barn rings with music and song THE ancient walls of the Bishop’s Barn in Wells were bathed in colour and twinkling lights when community choir the ‘Chorus of Disapproval’ held their recent Summer Concert.

Thankfully the impressive raised-cruck roof was still in

A WORKOUT wih a difference is on offer at Irish Set Dancing sessions in Dinder Village Hall. The dancing, in sets of four couples, is described as fairly disciplined, with a bit of brainwork.

The group meets on Thursday evenings at Dinder Village Hall from 8pm-1pm, enjoying taking exercise to music, with a caller. Dancing

is mainly to CDs but with musicians every so often.

Exhibition to tell story of firefighting AN exhibition on Firefighting in the Mendips will be held at Wells Museum during August and September.

This is following on from the very well received exhibition that was held there during 2015 on Firefighting in Wells.

It will include lots of photos, artefacts, interesting stories, and information on the history of the fire brigades in the Mendip area.

It is planned to have a small gathering of vintage preserved fire engines at the museum on Saturday, August 12. There will also be a children’s quiz and a caption competition with prizes for the winners.

The exhibition is being put together by Paul Pickford who has had an interest in the fire service since childhood. His father Roger served as a retained fireman for 18 years at Wells Fire Station and they own a 1961 Dennis Fire Engine that was stationed at Paulton in the Sixties and Seventies.

local community. They are then called out via a pager to the fire station in the event of a call out.”

Firefighting has changed dramatically over the years and the exhibition will show its development from its early

primitive beginnings to the present day. Firefighting in the Mendips will run from August 5 to September 13. Entry is £1 for adults and free for children, and money raised will go to the National Firefighters Charity.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS AND AVALON ROTARY CLUBS THE 17th annual Wells Charity Boules Tournament, organised

by Wells and Avalon Rotary Clubs, took place in a sunny Wells Market Place on July 9.

Forty eight teams competed throughout the day in an exciting and close run up to the final between two veteran teams of the Boules, Crème de la Crème and La Barrique. Both teams have played in all bar one of the tournaments’ 17-year history, with La Barrique the triumphant winners.

“As ever, we owe an enormous debt of gratitude to all those who help the Boules run so smoothly each year,” said organiser Adrian Lawrence. “We’re grateful to Wells City Council for the use of the town hall and to Roger Penny for his drivers and lorries for the storage, drop off and collection of the grit that make the pistes on which teams play.

“As ever we had a fantastic group of volunteers and huge thanks to head chef Tom Ollis and his team at The Crown who kept everyone fed and watered so well. We raised around £5,000 this year which will go directly to The Nepal Trust and Avalon and Wells Rotary Clubs.”

WELLS TWINNING ASSOCIATION A VERY sunny and bright Friday, June 16, warmly welcomed members of the Bad Durkheim Twinning Association to Wells.

The party arrived the previous evening, where they were met at their hotel by chairman Richard Hibberd, Bob and Pat Reynolds, Linda Davies and Dawn Payne, when the final arrangements were confirmed for a very busy schedule the next day.

On Friday morning, our friends from Bad Durkheim were greeted by the Wells Town Crier, Len Sweales, in full regalia on the Market Square. After introductions the mayor, Councillor John North, and the mayoress, Gail North, invited everyone into the town hall where the mayor formally welcomed them to Wells. After refreshments the delegates from Bad Durkheim were taken on a tour of the town hall by the town crier.

The mayor and mayoress invited committee members from Bad Durkheim together with the

Members of Wells WI at their fundraising tea party chairman and secretary of Wells Twinning Association to join them in the Mayor’s Parlour to meet informally to discuss how Bad Durkheim and Wells can develop twinning between the two towns.

Wells Twinning Association hosted a lunch for the visitors at the Courtyard Restaurant. The Bad Durkheim party remarked that the lunch was excellent, the venue superb and the staff extremely helpful.

Following lunch, the town crier very kindly took the members from Bad Durkheim on a tour of Wells, providing an informative history with many anecdotes that everyone enjoyed and appreciated. When the tour was completed, the party had time to look around our city before returning to their hotel for a short rest.

In the evening, the Wells Twinning Association hosted a Hog Roast at Wells Rugby Club.

Over 130 people (including our visitors from Bad Durkheim) attended and enjoyed a most successful evening renewing old friendships and forming new ones.

Wells Civic Society will present an award to the winning creation and there will be a dedicated exhibition in the week after the event in the Cathedral.

The Armandine Gallery is supplying paint, paper and pencils for the children but all other artists are asked to take their own materials.

Big names will discuss a life in politics

THIS year’s 25th anniversary Wells Festival of Literature will be launched in the city’s cathedral on September 29

by Simon Jenkins, journalist, author and broadcaster.

He was editor of both the Times and the London Evening Standard and he chaired the National Trust. He will be eulogising his favourite cathedral which scores five out of five in his book England’s Cathedrals.

For the main event which runs from October 13-21, the ever-popular subject of biographies will be well covered as usual. Nick Clegg is the first speaker who will be interviewed

by Jonathan Rugman from Channel 4 News and one of three throughout the festival on the

political stage. His new book Politics: Between the Extremes re-makes the case for multiparty governments and pragmatic compromise in an age where populists preach idealogical purities.

Alan Johnson will be discussing the third volume of his memoirs The Long and Winding Road, with Channel 4’s Jackie Long, recounting his early political skirmishes as a trades union leader and how he came to the attention of Tony Blair.

His rise from condemned slums in West London to some of the most senior jobs in politics is a testament to his hard work and determination.

As with the two former speakers, Harriet Harman’s reputation is of honesty and integrity and in her book A Woman’s Work, she discusses with Lois Rogers, an award-winning international journalist who lives in Wells, a frank account of the progress – and setbacks – of the Labour Party.

Author of 12 books, Michael Heseltine has co-written his latest, Thenford: The Creation of an English Garden with his wife Anne.

Full of passion and enthusiasm, they describe their adventurous mission to bring the wild, overgrown and often dilapidated grounds of what was

a tired house and estate, back to its former glory.

Past chair of the festival, Emma Craigie, will interview two Somerset authors about their contrasting use of memoir and memory for their books.

Susan Beale’s The Good Guy was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award and Helen Stevenson draws on her family’s time in France and her personal experience of bringing up a child with cystic fibrosis in her factual memoir Love Like Salt.

Room provides showcase for treasures of the book world A TREASURE trove of rare, first edition and antiquarian books has been created by the great-great-grandson of Charles Darwin at Bookbarn International near Wells.

Dedication rewarded with England selection ROUNDERS star Jordan Stead could never have dreamed when she used to go and watch her mum play that she would not only play in the same team, but would one day play for England.

Yet that is exactly what happened after she fell in love with the game and started playing for Wells.

“I first fell in love with rounders when I played for the very first time at school,” said Jordan, aged 27, a former pupil at Wells Blue School.

“My mum plays for Wells so I can remember always asking if I could go and watch her. I played for Wells as soon as I was allowed which was 15 years old.

Playing for them for the past 12 years has definitely built up my confidence and developed me as the player I am today. I have loved every minute of it.”

She added: “I was always in the school team and I can remember we had an amazing

school team… I am pretty sure we were unbeatable and I still play with some of the same girls now.”

Jordan, a school cover supervisor at St Dunstan’s School in Glastonbury, won a place in the England team last year after taking part in trials.

International matches, and even the training sessions, were quite an eye-opener.

“It is on a completely different level to the rounders I am used to. I even had to get used to different rules. Just the accuracy and the tactics they use is amazing and really opened my eyes about how tactical rounders actually is,” she said. “Training was once a month, it doesn’t sound a lot but you were training for a whole day or maybe even a whole weekend, it was intense.

Half the day was fitness and skills and the other half was gameplay.

“The players in that squad are ridiculously fit and I am

definitely not so I really struggled with the first half of the day.”

Jordan says that being picked to represent her country is one of her rounders highlights, along with Wells winning the Somervale Ladies Rounders League – the biggest rounders league in the South West – and her “one-handed Superman catch” against Wales in an international fixture.

Explaining what she enjoys about rounders, Jordan says: “Everything really… You never know what’s going to happen. I love the fact that you never know if a team is going to beat you or not, it all depends on the day and if they can hit the ball.”

Jordan will be trialling again for the England team in October.

NEW Wells City FC first team manager Steve Laker is making sure his players are ready for the challenge ahead when they kick off their Western League Premier Division campaign.

“We’re working the lads really hard. In the Western League it’s all about fitness,” he said.

“I’ve got a three-year plan that I want to achieve. The first year is consolidating, then I’d like to build on that.”

Steve has joined Wells from Street, saying it was an opportunity he could not turn down, and has secured the services of Paul Comley, who has a wealth of Western League experience, as assistant manager, and ex-serviceman Taff Alexander as first team physio.

“We’re really excited about

the new season,” said Steve. “The morale is high. My players are ready and I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do.”

Wells are at home to Cribbs in the FA Cup on August 5 (ko 3pm), before travelling to Odd Down for their first league fixture on August 8 (ko 7.45pm). n Somerset Community Foundation has awarded its first Youth Social Action Fund grants to four Somerset community groups, including Wells City FC. Funding has been granted to the Wells club to pay for eight young footballers to take a FA referee course.

David Hiscox, from Wells City, said: “The trainee referees will learn the core values involved in refereeing, as well as keeping fit and active.”

Tennis coach wins another award WELLS Tennis Club coach Kevin Durney was named top performance coach of the year at the annual Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership Awards (SASP).

This is the second honour for Kevin who was awarded

Somerset coach of the year by the Lawn Tennis Association in 2016. Wells Tennis Club was also shortlisted for Club of the Year.
