Community united in caring for each other A NEW group of community organisations has been formed in Wells to co-ordinate, help and support the local response to the coronavirus pandemic.

With volunteers springing up across the city offering help to those in need, the new group aims to provide a central hub offering information and advice for residents.

Called Wells Coronavirus Network, it has set up a phone helpline – 01749 467079 – open 9am-5pm Monday-Friday but hopefully for longer soon.

People can also pass on news or seek advice by email at cv19@ connect-centre.org.uk.

‘Keep calm, and ask for help if needed’ THE Bishop of Bath & Wells, the Rt Rev Peter Hancock, has said that this is not a time to panic, but a time to practically and prayerfully care for each other.

“It’s the uncertainty that’s creating a sense of anxiety. These are unusual and difficult times,” he said.

“The three words I’m encouraging people to focus on are Prayer, Care and Share.”

He said that now was the time more than ever to put into practice the words ‘love your neighbour’.

In another reassuring message, the Mayor of Wells, Councillor John Osman, said: “As a community we face an unprecedented challenge to our health. I am touched by the local residents coming together to offer help to those who may need it. Keep calm, keep safe and don’t be afraid to ask for any help that you need.”

Public worship in Wells Cathedral, as in other Church of England churches, has been suspended on the grounds of public safety.

A number of other venues around Wells have closed until further notice, including Wells Town Hall, Wells & District Museum, Wells Library and Wells Film Centre.

Parents have been asked to keep children away from school, although the children of key workers and children who are vulnerable can still attend, and

support businesses as normality returns.”

Events in Wells that have been cancelled or postponed include the comedy festival, the theatre festival, the May Charter Fair and the film festival. Sally Cooper, proprietor of Wells Film Centre, which organises the film festival, said she hopes that it can now be held in the first weekend in September.

The steering committee of Wells and District Neighbourhood Watch is among those across the city looking out for people while they are confined to their homes.

Chairman Simon Lawder said: “A central role of Neighbourhood Watch is to encourage community spirit and this emergency is precisely where we can help. Each local coordinator is in regular contact with local people so they’re ideally placed to build a panel of helpers and people in need.”

Face masks being made at Loaf.bakehouse

Cafe becomes a hub for face-mask making FACE masks for care workers are being made by the hundred at a cafe in Wells.

Now that cafes around the country have been told to close, Lois Williams has turned Loaf. bakehouse, the cafe in Market Street she runs with husband Danny, into a hub for producing face masks.

She sews together the cotton masks, complete with elasticated ties, with the help of two people who were working in the cafe and three customers.

“The Bluebird Care agency couldn’t get hold of face masks so asked if I could sew them some,” said Lois, whose name had been passed on to them.

“There’s a huge shortage.

These are not proper NHS surgical face masks, they are just like a barrier to make carers feel

more confident as well as the people they’re looking after.”

An initial order of 300 has been increased to 1,500, and more orders could follow.

“Anyone local who wants one can have one as well. We’ve sold quite a few already,” said Lois.

She and her team can each make ten face masks per hour, some of the material coming from old duvets. The masks sell to individuals for £4, with a lower rate for care companies.

Loaf.bakehouse had closed its doors from Monday to Friday, but had been hoping to open on Saturdays and Sundays for people to pick up items such as breads and takeaways.

“We’re confident we’ll be able to run as normal again once the Government say we can,” said Danny.

Events called off and doors are closed WELLS Film Centre made the decision to temporarily close its doors after Prime Minster Boris Johnson’s advice to avoid places such as bars, restaurants, theatres and cinemas led to a dramatic drop in attendance.

Proprietor Sally Cooper said that the safety of the film centre’s community, customers and staff had to come first.

“At this time, we are unsure how long we will be closed, but we will be back as soon as we can,” she said.

“We will continue to update our website and social media platforms as any new information becomes available.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers, business partners and staff for all their support. As a community we will get through this difficult time together. Stay safe and see you all soon.” n The Wells Little Theatre committee has decided to postpone all shows for the rest of the year. This includes Big Fish, Quartet, And Then There Were None and Cinderella.

It is possible the shows will be rescheduled when the coronavirus situation improves.

Refunds for tickets have already started for people who have paid online and with card. Those who paid with cash can claim a refund by writing a letter or emailing info@wellslittletheatre. com n Wells Library has closed its doors until further notice, along with all other public libraries in Somerset. Library services are still available 24/7 at SomersetReads.co.uk where people can download e-books, audiobooks and magazines. n The Heads Up mental health charity at South Horrington has closed its doors for the time being. It said in a statement: “Having considered the most recent published guidelines on COVID-19, Heads Up has taken the difficult decision to temporarily close our service to clients. Our Carers Groups that currently operate in Wells and Shepton Mallet will also temporarily cease. We are currently in the process of

Suggestions for how to stay fit and well Dr Ruth Donlevy, GP Partner at Wells City Practice, provides some health and well-being advice to help people get through current times THE phrase “health and wellbeing” has become a familiar one within our society over the past few years. Little did we know that the year 2020 would present with something that every single one of us would be so affected by and never has our health and well-being felt so important.

There is a vast amount of information out there at the moment to help us with this, ranging from exercises you can do from within your own home, to taking up a new hobby to keep occupied during this time. Here’s a summary of what to think about and put in place so that you can give yourself a routine to try to help you and your families through the next few weeks and months.

Exercise For anyone who is having to self-isolate due to their age, underlying health conditions or because you are currently pregnant, your usual form of exercise may not be possible (eg. attending a gym, going swimming). However, the current advice (at time of writing – please note that this advice may be different by the time you read this) is that as long as you avoid the public and stay at least two metres away from people, you can still go for a walk, run or bike ride. If you’re used to walking to the shops each day to

keep active you can still do this as long as you choose a quieter time; find out what time your local supermarket is offering opening times to people selfisolating. Again, avoid people and keep at least two metres away.

If you are experiencing ‘flu like symptoms and have been advised to stay at home to recover, avoid strenuous exercise for at least two weeks and until you feel completely recovered (which may take several weeks).

If you have been identified as someone who needs shielding due to particular vulnerability (the NHS will have contacted you directly about this in the last week) and need to completely self-isolate, or you have decided yourself that you want to completely self- isolate (perhaps if you have significant underlying health conditions and are feeling particularly vulnerable), then it is important that you find a way of exercising to the level that you would normally and getting fresh air. Find an exercise routine that you enjoy, even if it’s just from a sitting position (lots are being advertised on television, in the papers and online). If you have a private garden or outside space, try to get outside at least once a day. If not, open the window for a short time and get some fresh air at least once a day.

For those who do have a private outside space, gardening will be perfect exercise and therapy. If you don’t usually do a lot with your garden, here’s the opportunity to spend time getting to know it better and start

Go for a walk, run or bike ride if it is still possible; and you could try out some new recipes off some small projects. Start off with small areas that you can tidy easily and do a bit each day. Use pots and window boxes to plant seeds and spring bedding plants.

Set up a simple bird feeder and choose bird feed appropriate for this time of year, when birds are nesting.

Yoga and Pilates help both body and mind. If you usually attend a yoga class, see if your teacher is offering online support so you can continue. Otherwise, there are routines available online, on DVD or plenty of books available.

Sleep Try not to get over-tired. Again, this is the time to improve your sleep pattern by encouraging rest and relaxation in the evening, no screen use after 8pm at night and try reading or listening to music instead. Television is fine after 8pm as the light from it doesn’t stimulate your brain as much as a computer-type screen does.

However, avoid unsettling films or dramas, and you may wish to avoid listening to the news in the evenings.

Nutrition Even if you don’t usually, try to start having three healthy meals a day; it’ll break up your day and you can spend more time

preparing your meals. It’s a good opportunity to get out the cook books and find some new recipes and ideas. You’ll be amazed with how creative you can be even if you have limited ingredients to cook with. This difficult time will make us more respectful of food availability and hopefully, as people will generally have more time, we can avoid food waste.

Make this a focus for your family.

Follow the usual advice on getting enough fresh fruit and vegetables which will help boost your vitamins and therefore your immunity. Try to have a couple of portions of oily fish a week, such as salmon or sardines, also good for your immune system.

Keep well hydrated, ideally with water. Try swapping some of your usual caffeinated drinks for non- caffeine alternatives such as red bush or peppermint tea and decaffeinated coffee.

Music Whichever genre of music you usually enjoy, set up an easy way of being able to listen to it regularly and use it to help exercise or activity. Use this time as an opportunity to explore other types of music. The radio has some fantastic broadcasting whether music shows or other entertainment to enjoy.

Hobbies Hobbies allow us to switch off and relax, reducing our feelings of stress. This is the time to start or continue the hobby you’ve always meant to, whether it be learning to play an instrument, writing poetry or stories or art and craft projects. Finding a DIY project you could do easily at home will give you something to focus on over the coming months.

Keep in touch It is not going to be an easy time for anyone and it is so important that we all try to look out for each other, particularly those who will be more isolated because of this.

If you’re younger and healthy, look out for neighbourhood schemes that you can join to help your community. Use technology to help you stay in regular contact with elderly relatives and be creative with ways that you can brighten their day.

WELLS Health Centre and Wells City Practice have each had to change the way appointments are run in response to the recent developments in the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

The changes at both practices have been carefully considered with a view to keeping our patients and the staff at both surgeries as safe and healthy as possible. Both practices are trying to minimise the risks associated with the virus whilst continuing to provide a service to meet our patients’ needs.

Wells Health Centre We will no longer be booking face to face appointments for the foreseeable future. For all appointments currently booked, we will be calling you instead; please do not come into the surgery. The purpose of the call will be to decide what action is required and to determine how best to progress those actions; you may still be invited to come into the surgery if necessary.

For all future appointments, you will be booked a telephone call instead of a face to face appointment in the surgery.

Again, during this call, the clinician will discuss your concerns with you and decide upon the best course of action to take.

Wells City Practice For all appointments currently booked with a GP, we will be contacting you to arrange a ‘phone call instead. Face to face consultations will be avoided as far as possible to minimise spread of the virus and in particular, to protect our older and more vulnerable patients and will only be arranged if

the doctor decides it is needed.

Otherwise, we hope to provide the best care possible by use of ‘phone consultation and where possible and useful, video consultation from your mobile phone to our computer.

If you need to speak to a GP, please phone reception as normal. If your problem is urgent, a ‘phone call with the duty doctor will be arranged. If not urgent, a ‘phone call will be arranged with one of the other doctors.

Please attend childhood immunisation appointments as planned. If you require blood tests, injections, other immunisations or other procedures, please ‘phone reception and a ‘phone call with a GP will be arranged to discuss what is needed.

n VIRUS OUTBREAK Virtual rehearsals for shows’ casts Bells ringing out to say thank you WELLS Theatre Festival organisers have announced that while the festival itself which was scheduled to take place between July 11-14 has been cancelled, it will continue to rehearse its two community productions, Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors and Jacqueline Wilson’s Hetty Feather.

The festival organisers are continuing to work with the casts of both shows who will come together for virtual rehearsals via video technology in a move to maintain morale and combat the risk of isolation as the coronavirus crisis continues to restrict social interaction.

The two productions’ casts

are entirely made up of residents of Wells and the surrounding communities and directed by professional directors Ros Johnson and Louise Merrifield.

Ros, artistic director of the festival, said: “Despite the obvious challenges, we have decided to keep going with rehearsals for both shows in whatever way we can. We want to help everyone stay positive and motivated in this incredibly challenging time. We will rehearse via Skype, Zoom and WhatsApp and are determined not to be defeated. If the performances have to happen later in the year than planned so be it. Watch this space.”

‘We hope to be back stronger than ever’ ANNOUNCING the cancellation of the Wells Comedy Festival, organiser Ben Williams said: “To the people that have supported the festival over the past six years – particularly the volunteers who

give up their time for free – we want to say a huge thank you. We hope to be back, stronger than ever, in 2021.”

Currently, we provide the ingredients for healthy weight-loss meals, and had planned to start a separate frozen range in May. However, over the past few days we have been inundated with calls to provide our planned quality ready meals to the local community, especially for those self-isolating.

As a result of this, and due to the nature of the Coronavirus, we’ve decided to bring the date forward and will start delivering to the local area on Monday 13th April.

On the right is our lovely menu. We will require all orders and payment at least one week in advance of delivery.

How some services are being affected

Eddie the Collie was found to have a stomach full of roast potatoes when he was examined at the vets after becoming unwell

Following an enjoyable day out, including some time at the pub, Eddie the Collie had been sick and was looking uncomfortable, doing some rather unusual stretches.

We all know Eddie to be a hardy dog and so knew we should have a quick look before going home. When Eddie walked in he was still pleased to see us but before long he was adopting his rather unusual stance. Also concerning was that his abdomen felt swollen and sore, so an X-ray was called for – we thought he may have mischievously eaten something that had become lodged.

The X-ray was a shock as it showed that Eddie’s stomach had twisted – a life-threatening condition. Our plans changed immediately as it was imperative that Eddie was taken straight to theatre.

In surgery we managed to flip his stomach back into position and then insert a stomach tube to empty the contents – much of which was roast potatoes. His stomach was then sutured to his body wall to reduce the risk of a recurrence, before we closed his abdomen and he could recover in bed.

He has recovered extremely well, leaving only one question unanswered – where did he get all the roast potatoes? It turns out that Eddie is such a likeable character that the pub regulars treat him to an occasional sneaky roasty at Sunday lunch.

However, their secret came out in the most unlikely of circumstances!

Police Avon and Somerset Police have reassured the public that it’s still business as normal and say that officers and staff are tirelessly working round-the-clock to keep communities safe.

Chief Constable Andy Marsh said: “We’ve never faced a public health emergency like this and the restrictions put in place to keep us all safe will continue to have a big impact on our everyday lives.

“Understandably, many people are feeling concerned and anxious about the health and wellbeing of their family and loved ones.

“I want to reassure each and every one of you that we are still here for you. We’ll continue to respond to emergencies and high priority incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we’re still patrolling our communities, arresting offenders and detecting and solving crime.

Mendip District Council Mendip District Council has cancelled meetings until further notice.

However, everyday/routine business at the council will continue, but by virtual and technological means, and the council is encouraging people to contact them via the website www.mendip.gov.uk or by telephone 0300 303 8588 and not go into the council offices.

Alternative arrangements for democratic processes are being considered and will be publicised by the council once more information is available.

Somerset County Council Somerset County Council has said it will be taking a number of steps to keep services running while minimising the spread of the virus.

Most council buildings will be closed, public meetings and events will be postponed or moved online, and office-based staff will be working from home.

Registration services will be by appointment only, while other frontline services, like adults and children’s social care, highways maintenance and the Somerset Direct Contact Centre, will support the public as normal.

‘No Contact’ mode at Palace

Tourism staff home-working

THE Bishop’s Palace had been keeping the gardens open, and offering a fully ‘No Contact’ experience to visitors.

In order to comply with the Government recommendations about social distancing, while allowing visitors to take exercise, Palace staff had made some enhancements to the site in order to enable visitors to enjoy the gardens without having to enter the Ticket Office, handle cash, or come within two metres of other people.

Tickets could be bought online in advance or at the Drawbridge, in the open air, using the contactless method with a payment card, enabled mobile phone or smart watch.

Palace Members were able to simply show their membership card at the Ticket Gate.

The Palace buildings, though, were closed.

Tables outside The Bishop’s Table Cafe had been spaced out

VISIT Wells staff who would normally work in the Tourist Information hub located in Wells Town Hall are now working from home.

They remain available to answer enquiries by email on visitwellsinfo@gmail.com and through social media channels.

Visitors had been able to still visit Wells Cathedral and The Bishop’s Palace, which offered places of reflection, prayer and quiet at this difficult time.

Visitors were being asked to respect the social distancing guidance and to maintain a distance of 2m from others.

Visit Wells has written to all the restaurants and cafes in the city and is promoting their home delivery services.

The Bishop’s Palace introduced new procedures for visitors to allow adequate room between cafe users in the open air and a takeaway only service had been made available for drinks and food.

Easter Holiday family activities were planned to continue, consisting of self-led

trails around the Gardens, which could be downloaded from the website (bishopspalace.org.uk), as well as picked up on site.

The Palace was offering half price entry tickets during this time, and Annual Membership was still available from £32.

TABITHA is a healthy, active and affectionate 13-year-old tabby and white lady whose long time owner is sadly in a nursing home. So now Tabitha needs to start a new life with new humans.

She still has a lot of living to do. She is fully vaccinated and microchipped and has had vet checks and been treated for fleas and worms on a regular basis.

Tabitha enjoys being brushed and a warm lap to sit on. She likes to get out and about and in recent years has lived in a retirement complex set in parkland so needs a home well away from busy roads. We are told she is quite assertive with other

cats so probably needs to be the only cat in the household.

A new chapter in firm’s history

Discussion about Moat Boat Races

A SPECIAL celebration evening marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another for Wells firm db+PAUL. Staff and guests enjoyed food and drink at The Crown to mark the day-to-day running of the business being handed over by former managing director Jim Paul to new managing director Nicholas German. Jim has taken on the role of consultant senior building surveyor.

He said: “Having been in business in Wells as a chartered building surveyor for the past 40 years I am pleased to pass on the baton onto my worthy codirectors Nicholas German (MD) and Howard Thomas, supported by the loyal members of staff at db+PAUL. “The City of Wells has proved to be a good business centre over the years, not only due to the many historic buildings it contains needing the services of a chartered building surveyor, but also due to the range of other professional businesses within the city with whom I have had the pleasure of working over the years.”

Nicholas joined the firm as a graduate building surveyor in 2015. He has worked on several prestigious local refurbishment projects, such as that of the historic Crispin Hall in Street and of the Dean’s Lodgings in Wells, owned by Wells Cathedral.

He said: “I have had the pleasure of working closely with Jim for the last six years at db+PAUL and I am proud to be taking the firm forward along with the rest of the team.

WELLS City Council is to discuss with Wells Lions offering some assistance towards the Wells Boat Races.

The Lions have announced that they and Wells Air Cadets are withdrawing from staging the popular annual event, held on The Bishop’s Palace Moat every August Bank Holiday.

Town Clerk Steve Luck told a meeting of the Finance & General Purposes Committee on March 12 that the Lions have now approached the council for help with the required paperwork to try to save this year’s races.

He said that if the Lions completed the paperwork, he would be willing to look it over for them.

Committee members agreed that the council should not go further and become the race organiser, and that further discussion would be held with the Lions.

Other items discussed included the possibility of installing a CCTV camera outside the toilet block alongside the Town Hall after further vandalism; the rearrangement of the information area at Town Hall reception following the opening of the new Tourist Information Centre; and the trial of the sale of saplings for £1 each at a market stall in the summer to make trees more readily available to the public.

The Paul family’s involvement with caring for buildings in Wells started in the late 19th century.

The firm of W & H Paul that became known for its building, decorating and renovating services was started by William Paul and began trading on July 29, 1893, from 16 South Street.

Members of the Paul family continued to run it, at different premises, until it ceased trading on the retirement of Jim’s father George, and his aunt and uncle Madeline and Jack, in 1990.

Meanwhile, Jim had qualified as a chartered building surveyor in 1980, becoming a partner in

Davis Blackburn & Partners and opening a new chartered building surveyors’ office in Wells in 1982.

The business moved to its present location in St Cuthbert Street in 2007, with the name of the firm changing in 2009 from Davis Blackburn, following the retirement of the founding partners, to db+PAUL to reflect the ownership.

The firm’s senior secretary, Jeni Oborn, helped organise the event at The Crown.

She said: “It was a lovely evening and a great way to mark the end of an era for Jim and the start of a new one for Nick.

“Thank you to the great staff at The Crown for helping it all go smoothly, and to Helen Ives of The Pink Hedgehog who made our fantastic cake.”

Community group ready to make new bid for Old Deanery THE sale of The Old Deanery on Cathedral Green is taking longer than expected, partly due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

The building was put up for sale last summer with an asking price of £2.5 million after the Diocese of Bath and Wells decided to relocate its office staff.

A community bid for the building from a group of Wells residents was rejected by the diocese, and negotiations for its purchase were entered into with a private buyer instead.

The bidding process was subsequently reopened, and the Wells Community Interest Company (CIC) hopes to submit a revised bid once the Covid-19 crisis is over.

With the new bid, the CIC says it will drive the project forward, while the developer provides the financial stability. There would be a mix of commercial use, such as residential and offices, with tourism and community spaces.

The vision is to incorporate galleries with work of national importance from national museums, with whom the community group had started to negotiate.

“This could be so positive for Wells in these difficult times,” said Paddy O’Hagan, one of the directors of the Old Deanery Project. “The Old Deanery is an integral part of the medieval glory of Wells. Surely we need to secure this wonderful building for the people of Wells.”

The Diocese of Bath and Wells said in a statement: “Although there remains considerable purchaser interest in The Old Deanery, its sale is taking longer than expected because of the legal due diligence process associated with a Grade I listed building and the Covid-19 outbreak.”

Some changes for police team THE opening of the new police station at the Haskins Retail Centre in Shepton Mallet has meant some changes for the Wells police team.

The enquiry office and response team from Wells have joined colleagues at the Haskins Retail Centre site.

The local neighbourhood policing team will remain in Wells and will be co-locating with Devon and Somerset Fire on their site at Burcott Road in the autumn.

Avon and Somerset Police Chief Constable Andy Marsh said: “The police station at Shepton Mallet will provide a central hub for our police officers and PCSOs across the Mendips.”

Chief Inspector Sharon Baker said: “The new police station provides us with a modern and fit-for-purpose hub for our staff, whilst retaining all of our Neighbourhood Teams in their local towns, meaning a visible, local presence in all our communities.”

Bench took dim view of rival fishmongers’ carping ALBERT Moore was a resident of Southover in Wells who sold fish. John Watts was a resident of Shepton Mallet who also sold fish, and there was an intense rivalry between the two men.

In 1871 John watts took Albert Moore before the Wells Borough Bench with the complaint that Albert Moore had, “annoyed him in every possible way for a long time past with his outrageous conduct” and he asked the court to bind Mr Moore over to keep the peace.

Watts deposed: “I am a fishmonger living at Shepton Mallet and every other day for the past 14 or 15 years having

been coming to Wells to sell my fish. I was in Southover hawking my wares; bloaters, mackerel, whiting and other kinds, and about 4 o’clock in the afternoon I was shouting my wares, bloaters three a penny and mackerel six for a shilling.

“Moore came up with his cart and began calling out bloaters four a penny and mackerel six a shilling.

“Then I shouted out bloaters five a penny and Moore shouted out ‘five a penny’ and so we went on.

“Alfred Moore then hollered the ‘my fish will not poison you’ and I replied that ‘If I have got poison in my fish at least I ain’t

got lice in my cart or all over my person’.”

Albert Moore them upped his discourse with Watt.

“At least I never stole a basket of mackerel you b----- rogue you stole a basket of mackerel out of my father-in-law’s cart. I am a master for you any time either in selling fish or with my fists, in workmanship or in manhood and if you come this way again, I will punch your ------- head off.”

Watts then took his wares up Broad Street and Moore followed. Watts went into the Red Ox into the Tap Room and out of another door, Watts went up the High Street and Moore continued to follow him all the

while with his fists up saying he would punch Watts’ lights out and if he didn’t do it that day, he would do it another.

The Bench thought the two men as bad as one another and both were bound over to keep the peace.

Moore had the last word. “If I don’t pay the surety will I have to go to gaol?” The Bench replied in the affirmative and Moore said “I would rather go to gaol than be bound over as I am sure to have another row with him.”

Moore was removed below to the cells but was brought up again an hour later after Mrs Moore had intervened and payed the surety.

First tile laid in creation of giant mosaic SOME good news amongst all the not-so-good. After four years of preparation, fundraising and planning, Ruth Ames-White has laid the first tile of the Wells in Mosaic project.

The next few years of her life will be dedicated to the labour of love to complete the work. Ruth said: “This feels like a massive milestone and to see the design, full scale in my studio, is really exciting.”

Wells in Mosaic began as an idea in 2015 and has been developed by a team of people each bringing different skills to the project, but all dependent on the artistic skills of mosaicist Ruth.

After painstaking research, planning, imaging and drawing, the final design was revealed in November. This has now been printed by St Andrew’s Press, full scale on special paper, onto which Ruth will fix over half a million hand-cut tiles. Each

Recreation Ground which should ensure it will remain a feature and attraction of the city for many decades to come.

Some very generous contributions have already been received to get the project to this stage and although fundraising events have obviously been postponed in these difficult times, it is still possible to make contributions to keep the project on track.

Sponsors and donors will have their names literally ‘set in stone’. Contributions of £250 or more will be acknowledged with the name, company name or dedication carved into a stone of blue lias, all of which will be set in a circle around the outside of the mosaic. Smaller contributions are also very welcome and will be mentioned in the book which will accompany the project.

Shed to open doors to new members A MEN’S shed project has proved so popular that it has been opening more often – and will be looking for new members when it reopens.

The Wells Community Shed at South Horrington has been welcoming people who want companionship and to learn new skills on Monday mornings since opening in 2018. Until the coronavirus outbreak meant it had to close, it had started opening on Friday mornings as well, and is inviting men – or women – who would like to attend when the situation improves to get in touch.

“The Wells Community Shed is providing a valuable

and useful service to the local community,” said Steve Whitby, secretary of the committee that runs the shed. “It enables people to connect, converse and enjoy being together working on activities where previous experience is exploited and/or new skills are gained. It helps to reduce loneliness and isolation, getting people active and having fun. The shed is now expanding its membership and will be looking for new members.”

Chairman Martin Curran said: “We believe a lot of people are interested but they don’t know we’re here.”

The shed is on the site of the Heads Up charity in Upper Breach, although it is a separate organisation. Martin said that its work still complements that of Heads Up in addressing issues of mental health and isolation.

One of the main activities in the shed is woodworking, with members making items such as planters and bird boxes.

These are sold to help subsidise running costs. Items can also be made to order, or repaired.

“You get to know other people and it means I’m not stuck at home on my own,” said regular attendee Adrian Cornwell. “I do a

The museum took on responsibility for providing tourist information for the city in 2010, and with dedication it grew into a professional service valued by visitors and residents alike.

In 2018, the museum and Visitor Information Service won the Believe in Somerset award for its contribution to tourism.

The museum volunteers have enjoyed the work, which in addition to being a valuable community contribution has also had its lighter moments, together with an array of enquiries – many of which could

be answered from their vast collective knowledge, while some required more research, such as: n What is worth visiting on the way down to Cornwall? n How can I get to Bangor by train? n How far is it to Salisbury and can I get there by bus? n Where is the nearest shop selling harps? n Where can I see suits of armour? n Is there any coarse fishing nearby? n What is the programme over Christmas (asked in February)?

There were also many enquiries from abroad asking for help in planning visits.

The museum’s volunteers were thanked for the valuable contribution they have made over the years.

Donation in memory of mother THE sounds of music will bring pleasure to care home residents thanks to a Wells firm’s donation. The accountants Probusiness have given £250 to the city’s Dementia Action Alliance who will arrange the music therapy sessions once the coronavirus has passed.

“We are making this donation in memory of my mother, Mrs Jean Mogford, who had Parkinson’s and Lewy Body Dementia,” said Jane Bowe, who is a director of Probusiness with her husband Martin.

“My mother spent her last two years in Torrwood care home at South Horrington.

“Music was a major part of her life. She played the piano and violin as well as teaching child and adult choirs. It is a privilege to be able to pass on something that she would have appreciated so much.”

Two different perspectives on landscape THE A2 Gallery in High Street, Wells, was planning to curate an exhibition of two exciting artists from the region in April.

Anna Francis and Tara Vignoles both explore landscape by utilising very different techniques, styles and media.

Despite these differences they were due to come together to complement each other in the EXPANSE exhibition – the gallery’s first of 2020 – from April 3-25.

“The two artists have invested a lot of money in the cost of framing in order to ensure the work is ready for April so I am determined to be committed to them,” said gallery owner Simon Schachter.

Tara was born and bred in London, and went on to study Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art and Norwich School of Art, gaining a BA Hons in Fine Art Printmaking.

The two artists will be featured in the EXPANSE exhibition at the A2 Gallery in April she now works primarily with oils, and says she is exploring the physical elements of the landscape, such as fleeting light, passing storms, big skies and

water, seeking to intertwine the emotional and ethereal aspects of that landscape, whilst also exploring the empathy and fragility of humankind through

artistic expression.

Bristol-based Anna’s map illustrations are inspired by the Bristol A to Z and local Ordnance Survey maps.

She explores natural contours, rivers and roads, highlighting and exploring natural and man-made forms through her use of digital and traditional media.

Her maps are created as limited-edition fine art giclée prints and more recently as screen prints.

Simon urged the public to support the show, the gallery and the artists he represents online if it was not going to be possible to visit in person.

He will be creating an online exhibition as well as the physical one which will be accessible at https://a2gallery.co.uk.

He aims to sell via the website as well, and will be looking at that once the exhibition has been hung.

Competition prize fund increased WRITERS should be gearing up for the 2020 Wells Festival of Literature competition which opens for submissions on April 1.

The closing deadline is midnight on June 30, which may seem a long way away, but will come around all too soon.

The festival has announced the final new judge for the 2020 Young Poets: Victoria Adukwei Bulley.

Victoria is a young poet, writer and filmmaker, widely published, a former Barbican Young Poet and 2018 winner of the Society of Authors’ Eric Gregory Award. Much in demand as a writer-in-residence, Victoria’s advice to young poets will be invaluable.

As Wells Voice reported last month, prestigious and successful writers are also lined up for the other classes.

Jo Shapcot will be assessing the Open Poetry class, Duncan Minshull will oversee the Short Stories, and Fleur Hitchcock will select the winning Book for Children.

The success of the 2019 festival has allowed organisers to raise the prize for the Open Poetry competition to £1,000 and increase prizes for all the

excavation other classes. The competition prize-giving, on Sunday, October 18, is one of the highlights of the festival when the winners are revealed and their work celebrated by the judges.

This year’s festival takes place from October 16-24.

Trophies handed out on glittering night WELLS Carnival committee held their annual trophy presentation at Wells Tramways Club on March 7.

They got a full house of club members who danced the night away at what was described as the best night for many a year.

Cheques were presented to Wells Scouts, Wessex Youth Football, Glastonbury Sea Scouts and Hope for Tomorrow, all of whom had collected at last year’s carnival and received amounts equalling about 40 per cent of what they raised.

There then followed the presentation of trophies to the various winning clubs that were in attendance.

“The trophies looked resplendent on the display and thanks must go to Josie and Nancy for getting them cleaned,” said committee president Maurice Day.

Importance of the Neighbourhood Plan ALMOST 1,000 towns, villages and cities across England have created Neighbourhood Plans.

They allow residents to have more say in the future development of the place in which they live.

So a team of members from the city council and Wells Civic Society produced a draft Neighbourhood Plan for Wells in 2015.

The then city council decided they did not wish to proceed with it at that time. However, the new council elected last year decided to revive and update the plan.

The original draft is now being reviewed by a Steering Group made up of city councillors and local volunteers with experience of planning.

Although Neighbourhood Plans cannot override the Local Plan drawn up by the local planning authority – Mendip District Council in our case – over the number of houses proposed for Wells, there remain many areas in which the Neighbourhood Plan can guide and have a positive impact.

For example, the Local Plan has included future housing

Wells Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group members Chris Winter and Adrian I’Anson at one of the many recent housing developments in the city allocations west of Keward (120 dwellings), at the rugby club (80) and on the current Tincknells site (25).

The Neighbourhood Plan can influence the type of housing, the design and layout of the houses

and their overall sustainability.

Climate change, environmental issues and houses built for “lifelong living” all now have the support of national and local government, so it is more likely that inclusion of these

issues in the Neighbourhood Plan will carry weight.

The Neighbourhood Plan is an opportunity for the community of Wells to let the city council know, through the consultation process, what they feel about these matters, as well as pedestrian and cycle links, green spaces, the vitality of the retail centre and support for the visitor economy.

Wells is a very scenic place which attracts large numbers of visitors, who make a significant contribution to the local economy. That said, visitors also add to the parking needs. New housing may also put more strain on medical, educational and other services unless the issues are addressed.

It is therefore vital that these local concerns are taken into account in the future planning process.

We expect to launch a range of consultations soon after Easter and look forward to lively discussions which will lead to the community of Wells making a significant contribution to future development proposals.

Busy and varied Women’s Day celebration INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day on March 8 was celebrated in Wells with great energy and diversity.

Organisations which support a wide range of people with needs which can cause isolation and distress came together to meet some of the 300+ visitors to the event.

In addition, visitors were offered demonstrations and

exhibitions of some of the arts and crafts which can help to alleviate stress and mental health problems: from knitting to willow weaving, crochet to fine art, quilling and many more.

By nurturing the body, the mind can be calmed, and teachers of yoga, Pilates and meditation were there to offer taster classes to anyone wishing to participate. There was musical

entertainment from three local choirs: the Blue-belles, Cantabile and The Swan Singers. Wells’ very own pom-pom dancer, Tina Blackwill, added energy and glamour to the afternoon.

There were very serious elements too, with talks from practitioners in mental health and reminders of how treatments were in the late 19th and early 20th century at the “Paupers’

Asylum” in Wells. Possibly the most popular location in the Town Hall though, was the Chaps’ Caff, where copious amounts of cake were consumed as always.

The Women of Wells (WOW), who organise the annual event, are very grateful to everyone who participated and supported the occasion, and to the Town Hall staff for all their help.

Tina brightens Dragons’ day

Work starts on pub revamp

WELLS pom pom dance teacher Tina Blackwill has described what it feels like to enter the dragons’ lair after appearing on TV programme Dragons’ Den. Tina tried to convince the Dragons to invest £25,000 in her business, Choreography by Tina B – The Great British Shake Off, in an episode of the popular BBC series screened on Sunday, March 22.

Touker Suleyman, Sara Davies, Deborah Meaden, Tej Lalvani and Peter Jones watched her shimmy and shake before grilling her about her business.

“I was absolutely petrified and shaking like a leaf, there is no second chance. Once the lift doors open you completely have to go for it,” said Tina.

“I am used to pressure and nerves but this was something completely new, I felt as if I was going to pass out. I danced out of the lift and delivered my pitch, almost pitch perfect. The

New licensees John Anthony and Mihaly Serger are relocating from Brighton to take on The King’s Head.

John said: “We’ve been looking for the right pub for the last five years. When we saw The King’s Head, we fell in love with it and the city and knew it was where we wanted to put down roots.”

“After my pitch I was completely exhausted, the adrenaline had worn me out. I jumped straight on the train to come home and waited eagerly to hear if I’d made it into the final cut of the show, which I had.”

While Tina failed to persuade any of the Dragons to make an investment, she said that it was a great experience.

“Although I didn’t get investment from any of the Dragons, they loved what I do and I think I brightened their day,” she said.

“It was such an honour to be part of the show, it actually doesn’t really matter if you don’t come away with anything. I came away with advice and an experience that not many people can say they’ve had. I think I added a bit of happy sparkle to the show.”

Guide to where Fairtrade products can be found WELLS Fairtrade City Group have produced a brochure which is a guide to where Fairtrade goods can be found around Wells.

Inside the brochure there is a map showing which of the city’s businesses are selling Fairtrade goods.

The brochure was launched to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight and the launch of Fairtrade in the UK 25 years ago, when towns and cities across the country began working towards obtaining the status of Fairtrade.

Wells was one of the first ten in the country to be given this status. To keep it, the steering group have to ensure every two or three years that certain criteria are met including keeping the profile of Fairtrade at events such as the One World Fair and during Fairtrade Fortnight.

The work of the steering group includes keeping records of meetings and finances and all the events attended, and keeping in touch with the city council, which also needs to

Enigma machine subject of farewell talk

Philippa Collings reports on a talk at Wells Blue School that brought to an end an enlightening series MANY will remember the Wells Evening Society which from 2006 to 2015 had an important place in the cultural scene of Wells.

The society closed in 2015 due to lack of members coming forward to serve on the committee and the accumulated monies were disbursed to local charities.

The society had for two years been paying for an annual talk to be given to sixth formers (Years 12 and 13) at the Blue School. These had been much appreciated and it was decided that some of the money would be given to continue these for a number of years. February 26, 2020, was the last lecture in the series when Dr Mark Baldwin’s talk was titled The Enigma Machine, Bletchley Park and the Battle of the Atlantic.

the story of how various people, including Alan Turing and the team at Bletchley Park, managed to break the codes, translating them back into English. This invaluable information was supplied to the Army, Air Force and Navy. Unknown to the

Germans, we knew where their U-boats were active which was tremendously important in the fight against enemy attacks on our merchant vessels in the North Atlantic.

It was a full and fascinating talk, and poignant that in the audience by invitation was Gordon Ravenscroft. Now aged 95, Gordon served as a naval rating in the North Sea when our vessels were supplying our then ally Russia with necessary supplies. His ship, the Duke of York, would have been in constant fear of U-boats.

Students were invited to come up at the end and ‘have a go’ with the Enigma machine – one of very few left.

It is hoped that in future years the Wells Festival of Literature will continue to sponsor these annual talks to the Blue School, providing different ideas and food for thought to new generations of students.

n NEWS IN BRIEF Mast plans rejected A PLANNING application for the installation of a mobile phone mast on the edge of a school playing field has been refused by Mendip District Council.

Vodafone Ltd & CTIL wanted to site a 12.5m lattice mast with ground-based cabinets at the Wells Cathedral School Sports Ground at Torhill Lane.

The school expressed concern about the application, and said it had not been consulted.

Refusing the plan, the council said that the options of sharing with other telecommunications installations in Wells had not been sufficiently ruled out, and the mast would have a detrimental impact on the visual character of the area.

Homes application GLADMAN Developments has submitted an outline planning application to Mendip District Council for the building of up to 90 homes on land at Glencot Road, Wookey Hole.

Wells Voice reported last month that the company had

been inviting views on the proposals for a new development next to the Bovis site.

Sunday openings MENDIP Hospital Cemetery grounds will be open to visitors on Sundays in April – but the chapel will not be open.

The gates to the cemetery at Hooper Avenue, Wells, will be unlocked and opened on Sundays from April 5, from 11am until 4pm, through to the end of September for visitors who wish to wander the grounds.

The chapel will remain closed for the duration of the coronavirus crisis.

Music challenge WELLS Cathedral School musicians Eliza Haskins, Bridget Yee and Sejin Yoon, and Old Wellensian Meggie Murphy have been filmed taking part in the Category Finals of the BBC Young Musician Competition 2020. There has been some good news from The Bishop’s Palace in Wells – Grace, the female of the pair of famous Palace swans, has laid her first two eggs.

Grace and Gabriel – with the help of some garden materials donated by the garden team – created two nests, and Grace chose to lay her eggs in the one on the island in the moat. City endometriosis support group aim A WELLS woman is hoping to set up a local support group for women with endometriosis.

Antonia Boyton, aged 50, was diagnosed with the condition in 1994 and underwent countless surgeries before finding her ‘super doc’ who carried out an effective surgical procedure in September 2016.

Three years later, Antonia - pain and symptom-free for the first time in more than 30 years - and her husband moved to Wells, where she now wants to set up a local support group to help others who are suffering.

“I remember what it was like after I was diagnosed with endometriosis. I remember not having a clue about anything and not knowing who to believe,” she said.

“I remember feeling alone in the world and feeling as though no one was listening to me. There were some dark days indeed and I was extremely lucky to have an amazing support network.”

As Wells Voice reported last month, there are support groups

in Bristol and Taunton, but Antonia feels that they are too far away.

She said: “In order to get to Bristol or Taunton, you’re looking at a two-hour round trip.

That’s a long way to go when you’re not feeling well. I know only too well what it’s like when you’re not up to driving, which is why I wanted to set something up a bit closer to home.

“And as much as social media is great, having face-toface contact with other women in a similar situation makes everything feel just that little bit better.

“It’s early days and I’m just putting feelers out at the moment - but this is something that I am really passionate about and I hope that something will come of this. I am currently scouting out suitable venues so that if the group does take off, we will, at least, have somewhere to meet.”

THE sale or purchase of any land whether agricultural or intended for development is a particularly dangerous area on occasion where specialist advice and guidance from a surveyor and solicitor is absolutely necessary.

One of the biggest danger areas that has developed over the last few years is called overage, which is sometimes referred to as uplift or even clawback.

It means a buyer of land can enter into obligations with the seller that if they get planning permission on the land in the future, although there are generally time limits for this kind of thing, they can be required to make further payments to the seller. It is a particularly dangerous if you are not advised properly when buying.

The overage can affect the land for periods of generally anywhere from five to 80 years and will apply to any development on the land unless it is clearly defined within the documentation to just apply to things like residential development. This can have an impact on agricultural land for example, because if you obtain planning to construct field shelters, agricultural buildings and so on it could trigger a further payment to the seller. It is therefore important that when buying land you consider what exclusions there should be on any uplift provisions.

The basic terms of overage state that valuation is done of the land when planning is granted.

This valuation is done on the

base value, which is the value of the land without any planning permission.

A second valuation is then done of the land on the enhanced or uplift value – the value of the land with planning. You then have a figure which is the differential between the two. The overage/uplift is paid on that sum. I have seen percentages ranging from 10 per cent up to 80 per cent but if the differential between the two values is £500,000 and the percentage attributable for the overage/ uplift is 50 per cent then you will pay another £250,000 to the seller.

Sometimes you are able to deduct from the figure calculated between the base value and the enhanced value the cost of the acquisition of the land although this is rare, and sometimes the cost of obtaining planning.

It is all down to negotiation where sometimes solicitors are involved and sometimes surveyors. Getting the terms agreed clearly and precisely at the outset is essential. Once the terms are agreed, getting the documentation drafted correctly is imperative which is why a specialist solicitor is so important. As a seller, you want to have the longest period of overage possible, with the biggest percentage possible and no deductions.

Longleat Safari Park will keep operating under strict hygiene standards

Drive-through Safari Park opens to visitors

LONGLEAT has opened its drive-through Safari Park for visitors.

While Longleat House, walkthrough animal areas and other attractions are temporarily closed as a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the world-famous Safari Park will continue to operate under strict hygiene standards.

The Wiltshire attraction believes the fact visitors will remain inside their vehicles for the vast majority of the experience will enable people to adhere to social distancing and hygiene guidelines.

“We are keen to be able to continue to give people the opportunity to enjoy the Park in a safe and secure environment,” said Ceawlin Thynn, Executive Chairman of Longleat Enterprises.

“In order to comply with the strictest hygiene standards, card payment pads will be disinfected after each transaction and cash

will not be handled during this period.

“Toilet facilities within the Safari Park will be continuously staffed and disinfected, with additional hand washing and sanitising facilities available for guests.

“In place of the usual food and beverage outlets, there will be a takeaway food and drink offering at the beginning of the Safari experience.

“All of these policies are designed to comply with guidelines on social distancing,” he added.

AUTHOR, illustrator and entertainer Ade Bowen will be running a series of art workshops in Wells for Somerset Skills & Learning (SS&L) once the present health crisis is over.

A series of four workshops were going to start in March at SS&L’s centre at Portway Avenue, Wells, with tutor Ade, who has more than 12 years’ experience of teaching art in adult education.

They have had to be postponed and will now be run another time.

When they do take place, Ade’s intention is to provide a laid back and fun experience that will teach basic skills to help people with their drawing.

Ade said: “I plan on opening learners’ eyes to tools and techniques which will improve their drawing skills. They are fun courses and elements of my entertaining also come in to play. I like my learners to enjoy themselves as they learn.”

The workshops will cover shape, tone and texture; how to draw portraits; how to draw perspective and create depth; and how to draw the human form.

Ade is a published children’s author, having written and illustrated The Astounding Adventure of Mr Bowns, a fairytale story about Mr Bowns, and he has been touring schools promoting the book.

GeoWeek organisers had hoped to offer one of planned events “GEOWEEK in the Wells and Mendip area is even bigger and better than last year.”

That was how the original article about this year’s event began – but sadly this is no longer the case.

GeoWeek seeks to introduce as many members of the public to geoscience as possible.

Several field visits had been planned this year, together with a building stone talk at The Bishop’s Palace and an Ask a Geologist event at the Wells & Mendip Museum.

In light of Government guidance and the fact that the museum is closed until further notice, organisers have had to postpone nearly all their plans until GeoWeek in May 2021.

So, what can be done? They had hoped to offer to Stone Your Home, in which their experts visit your stone-built home in Wells to reveal the amazing story of its building stones without ever coming inside.

They were going to post through the letterbox a ‘Stoned’ certificate and background information on the stones of the home, all free of charge.

This was planned before the latest ‘lockdown’ announcement from the Government.

In the meantime, organisers will write up the GeoWeek walks they had planned as self-guiding trails while developing more ideas to ensure that GeoWeek 2021 will be even bigger and better than the 2020 plans.

WELLS Civic Society has applied to Mendip District Council to install a commemorative Blue Plaque to the front wall of the City Arms pub.

By Emma James WELLS residents Nick and James Draper have launched an online enterprise selling ecofriendly toothbrushes made of bamboo.

Customers can subscribe to Brush Hub which will send a toothbrush through the post every month or two months as preferred. All parts of the toothbrush can be recycled as well as the packaging.

The father and son team are third and fourth generation members of the Draper family, owners of the UK’s oldest sheepskin slipper and boot company, based in Glastonbury.

Nick said: “We have been working hard for a while to reduce our use of plastic and to increase recycling in our slipper manufacturing business. For example, we use paper tape for our packaging now.

“We were interested in setting up a business which would help reduce plastic in the environment and were impressed with the toothbrushes. At the moment,

three billion plastic toothbrushes are thrown away every year.”

There has been a very positive response to the launch of Brush Hub. Nick said: “We have had more than a hundred people sign up for subscriptions so far and have had enquiries from a dentist in Europe and from the student shop at Cambridge University. It has helped that the product has been endorsed

by Dr Alan Holland at The Bristol Specialist Dental Clinic.”

Nick and James have also been asked about brushes for children and they are hoping to add these to their range in the future.

Brush Hub’s toothbrushes are made from Moso bamboo, a renewable resource which can grow up to one inch every 40 minutes, does not require pesticides to grow and produces 35 per cent more oxygen than trees.

It is also naturally antibacterial. James is keen to point out that “Moso bamboo is not the same species that pandas eat – they typically eat Arrow bamboo – so we are not taking food away from pandas!”

WE all like to record achievements – something done successfully with effort, skill or courage. However, our potential successes could be hindered by fear.

We all fear something, whether we fear our bosses as we know we have to perform well, or going into a new job and worrying about what everyone will think of us, going for the promotion but worrying we were not good enough.

There can also be the fear of reaching out for help because we worry that people will think we are weak.

Fear can cause all sorts of emotions as well as worry – dread, upset, and it can result in you avoiding things or situations that can have an impact on your daily life. It can also cause physical symptoms such as breathing speeding up, heart racing, sweaty palms, muscles tightening, all of which are unpleasant.

A small amount of fear can serve a purpose by encouraging you to focus on your task.

However there are some types of fear that are excessive which make you feel uncomfortable

and you wish your way out of the situation.

And just because someone looks confident doesn’t mean they are feeling like that on the inside. They could be scared rigid.

Goal setting involves the development of an action plan designed to motivate and guide a person or group toward an achievement. The goal needs to be achievable but this doesn’t mean you have to be alone. Why not call in help? We all have different skills, abilities and knowledge which together can be supportive and seeking help shouldn’t be seen as weak.

Achieving gives us a positive feeling, proud and joyful, recognising that it took work and dedication. Not achieving can lead to feelings of failure but the failing is an experience which has led to learning and therefore sets you up better for achieving the next time.

Your experiences can also help others so seeking assistance is nothing to be ashamed of. See it as a learning curve, redesign, pull in resources and don’t give up.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES INNER WHEEL CLUB OF WELLS WE have had some interesting speakers during the last month or so. At our February meeting we were treated to a further very interesting talk by Roger Parsons who told us about the rise and fall of the house of Porch. The Porch family was very respectable and prominent in the area in Victorian times but after a decline in its fortunes sold its house, Edgarley Hall, to Millfield School – used today as its prep school.

On Sunday, March 8, we joined a number of other organisations at Wells Town Hall to celebrate International Women’s Day. The aim of the day was to explore activities and crafts to help relieve stress and support well-being. Our stand displayed a number of items produced by members to support dementia sufferers, refugee aid, premature babies, breast cancer patients and the local day centre.

Great interest was shown by members of the public in our club and its activities and we had a number expressing an interest in joining us.

At our March meeting the following day Sheila Coggan, our president, welcomed Jim Wilkinson from the Connect Centre Youth Division in Wells.

This is our president’s chosen charity for the year and it was interesting for the members to hear about the welfare work done by the Connect Centre for young people in Wells.

Liz Hamblin WELLS CIVIC SOCIETY THE question on everybody’s lips at the beginning of the Wells Civic Society’s March meeting was would the speaker, Russell Lillford, chairman of Somerset Buildings Preservation Trust (SBPT), be able to tell them the situation with regard to the Bishop’s Barn in Wells, and whither its future.

It is fair to say that the answer was yes, and no.

The trust is certainly most interested in the barn, and indeed has already made improvements to the kitchen and toilets. But it has to work with the Wells Recreation Ground Trust, whose trustees are currently the Mendip District councillors. But they do not necessarily feel this is now an

This is where Wells City Council come into the picture because they would like to assume this responsibility, if it is deemed feasible. But just at the moment, it seems as if a state of limbo, therefore, exists as far as SBPT is concerned.

Much more decisively, Russell pointed to the recently refurbished and reopened Rural Life museum in Glastonbury, where a really major project was overseen and brought to a highly successful conclusion.

Working closely with South West Heritage Trust, SBPT oversaw the extensive redevelopment, adaptation and, very importantly, conservation of this archetypical 14th century barn, and the presentation of its picture of rural life in Somerset since the 1800s.

That said, unfortunately, SBPT can sometimes be thwarted. But such instances are rare, and Russell was able to give a fascinating resume of some of their many successes in fulfilling the aims of this registered charity, which actively oversees, throughout Somerset, the saving of buildings which are well worth preserving but are at risk, and which no one seems to be interested in.

Richard Hanks WELLS U3A WHILE her husband worked for three years in Egypt, back in the 1980s, Jan Diamond developed an interest in archaeology, the history of the country’s architecture, art and landscape, which led to her earning a Diploma in Egyptology. She is a speaker with a very well established reputation, travelling throughout the UK, and lecturing on cruise ships.

This time she covered the story of Akhenaten and the radical changes he made to ancient Egyptian life during the 18th Dynasty. He threw out the innumerable gods who’d been worshipped for thousands of years and created a monotheistic society, in which the people could worship only the sun god, Aten. During the 17 short years of his reign (1353 to 1336 BCE), Akhenaten nearly brought Egypt to its knees, and historians are divided as to whether he was “Mad, bad or brilliant,” some calling him a “Heretic King.”

When he died there was a State sponsored destruction of his reign and all it stood for.

The great temple at Karnak was built on the west bank of the Nile, where the sun went down, but the Luxor temple had an

open roof, on the east bank, and open to the sun and sky. In the reliefs and paintings we see the sun disc being worshipped. This emphasis on the sun god Aten was too much for the priests of Egypt, and unless they changed their spiritual allegiance, they disappeared with their thousands of deities. But Aten gives the pharaoh life; his name is Akhenaten. He rejected Thebes and built a new city on the East bank of the Nile, called Amarna, a city he never left.

Jan illustrated her truly fascinating talk with beautiful friezes, art work, jewellery, and some of the first glassware.

Akhenaten himself was always depicted in sculpture as an androgynous figure, but his famous Queen, Nefertiti, was both beautiful and indisputably regal. She enjoyed equal status with the Pharoah, shewn always on the same level and the same size as him in contemporary frescoes.

They were also seen with the sun god Aten, and were known as “The Holy Triad.” But Akhenaten’s reluctance to go to war left Egypt vulnerable to invasion, and in year 9 of his 17-year reign, the temples were destroyed, and in year 12 he made his last public appearance with Nefertiti.

He died in year 17. It’s not known if Nefertiti ruled for a while after his demise, but his nine-year-old son Tutankhamun officially succeeded him.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES Men’s Breakfast will not be meeting in April. A decision will be taken on the May and subsequent meetings as the situation develops.

WELLS WI AT the March meeting, arrangements were finalised for our participation in the International Women’s Day event at Wells Town Hall and for a coffee morning and sale of Balinese items to raise funds for Women’s Aid. In sporty news, our skittlers were planning a social outing and the walking netball group is proving very popular.

The main event was a talk from local artist Molly Briton.

After gaining her degree Molly went on to study stone carving at postgraduate level and went on to work as a stonemason. Some also recognised her from her time working in a popular local butcher’s shop.

Molly is a self-employed artist, and art teacher, based at the Heritage Courtyard in Sadler

Funding support from the Wells SOUP initiative enables her to offer an ‘access to drawing’ scheme which provides free or low-cost tuition for all ages and mixed abilities.

After looking at some of Molly’s work we were encouraged to try some drawing.

Molly believes that anyone who can hold a pencil and make a mark can draw. Apparently drawing engages a part of the

brain we don’t use every day, creating neural pathways that boost our ability to problem solve. Evidence also suggests that drawing can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

We needed no further encouragement to embark on a collaborative drawing game.

Each member drew for five minutes on a sheet of paper before passing it on to the person on their right who added to, or erased all or part of, what they took over. After several moves to

the right Molly collected in our collaborative efforts. Kindly, she says she plans to frame them.

Our creative activities gave rise to much discussion and laughter in what was an immensely interesting and fun evening.

More help possible for rough sleepers MENDIP District Council has received more than £250,000 funding to help rough sleepers across the area.

The grant was awarded by the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government. The money will enable Mendip to continue providing specific and tailored interventions, and to help fund a number of partners to deliver the services, including Citizens Advice, Mendip YMCA and Elim Connect.

There are currently 13 rough sleepers in the area, as at the last annual rough sleeper count/ estimate in November 2019.

In addition to the funding news, the council announced the launch of the Somerset Homelessness and Rough Sleeper Strategy 2019-2023.

Local authorities are required by

law to publish their strategies, and an action plan setting out how they will deliver the priorities.

The focus of Somerset’s strategy, which was undertaken with other districts in the county, is early intervention and prevention. Partnership working is also a strong feature.

Every year, around 1,600 households present to Mendip District Council as homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Cllr Richard Pinnock, Portfolio Holder for Housing Services, said: “The funding news, and the strategy launch, will both contribute massively to the good work that’s already underway in Mendip. Together they provide extra resources and a clear direction for us, and our multi-agency partners, to tackle this complex issue.”

Housebuilder helps fund music project HEADS Up has received funding from a regional housebuilder to help towards a music project for people experiencing mental ill health, including those with dementia.

The South Horrington-based mental health charity has been handed £1,000 by Persimmon Homes Severn Valley through its Community Champions scheme.

Heads Up is looking to run a music project which will see people take part in one-toone and group song writing workshops which will end in a concert to showcase their achievements.

The total cost of the project is £5,570. Thanks to Persimmon Homes’ donation, £4,600 has now been raised.

Sally Dempsey, who applied for the funding on behalf of the charity, said: “The

project will build self-worth and confidence, reduce social isolation, allow individuals to express themselves, develop new skills and ultimately improve their mental health. The project is now a step closer thanks to the donation from Persimmon Homes. We are so grateful.”

Carly Spear, head of sales for Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, said: “We are delighted to support Heads Up with their new project that promises to be a real success.”

Persimmon Homes will shortly start building a range of 110 two, three, four and fivebedroom homes at its Foxglove Heights development on Portway, Wells.

Electrical Safety advice please Welcome to our Landlords Q&A column. Each month we choose a question received from local Landlords. This month Mr L asks: “I’ve been told I must have an Electrical Safety Certificate now to rent my property. Is this true?”

It has always been best practice for Landlords to hold a satisfactory Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) and a mandatory requirement for Houses in Multiple Occupation. The Housing and Planning Act 2016 allowed for the Secretary of State to lay down regulations at any time to make EICRs mandatory. In October of last year this was enacted and draft regulations have been prepared, intended to come into force on the 1st June, 2020, and known as The Electrical Safety in Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020.

This means that you will need a current satisfactory EICR in order to be able to rent your property and will apply to all new tenancies (including renewals) granted on or after the 1st July, 2020, and for all existing tenancies from the 1st April, 2021.

You will need to supply your tenants with a copy of the report before the tenancy starts

or within 28 days for existing tenants. Reports will last for five years at which point they will need to be done again.

The report will be “unsatisfactory” where they do not meet the standards for electrical installations in the eighteenth edition of the Wiring Regulations, published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the British Standards Institution as BS 7671: 2018.

Where the installation requires remedial action or further investigation a Landlord will then have up to 28 days in which to carry out the works, and a further 28 days to supply the tenant with confirmation that the works have been done.

Fines for non-compliance can be up to £30,000 so, given the short time frames for the implementation of these regulations, you should be giving serious thought to arranging for a suitably qualified contractor to carry out the report and any associated works.

Wells A side twice get better of local rivals Belrose FOOTBALL WELLS City A came out on top in two consecutive games against local rivals Belrose.

The two sides first met in the semi-final of the Dimmock Green Cup on February 22.

The opening stages of the game saw both sides adopt a cautious approach with most of the play occurring in the middle of the pitch, meaning there was very little goalmouth action for the large watching crowd.

Midway through the first half Belrose were reduced to ten men after City midfielder Lee Oakley was on the receiving end of a late two-footed challenge. Now with a numerical advantage, Wells dominated possession, but time after time had their attacks were thwarted by a brilliantly organised and determined Belrose defence.

After a goalless first half, the Wells City management team made a double change early in the second half to try and force the breakthrough, bringing on forwards Ben Hewlett and Tom Pledger.

The Belrose back line continued to stand firm but the deadlock was finally broken

20 minutes from the end. Not for the first time this season substitute Ben Hewlett’s amazing long throw-ins were the solution City were looking for. Launching the ball into the box, Hewlett’s throw was met by the head of the in-form Ryan Pledger who jumped highest to nod the ball home and put Wells City A into the final.

Belrose and Wells City A went head-to-head for the second time on March 7.

It was Wells City A who started the game more brightly, and they were unfortunate not

to take the lead in the opening minute when Ryan Pledger headed Reece Cornish’s cross just over the bar.

Stefan Wasmuht and Toby Thompson also came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half, but a fine defensive display from the Belrose backline saw the teams go into the half time break level at 0-0.

Wells continued to have the better of the game early in the second half partly thanks to the impressive work rate of midfield duo Dan Catley and eventual man of the match Thompson.

City opened the scoring on the hour after a slick one-two between Wasmuht and Tyler Cornish saw Wasmuht break down the right wing before cutting inside and playing the ball into the path of Pledger, who despite being brought down by a defender managed to play the ball back to Wasmuht, and he finished from close range.

Wells doubled their lead and put the game beyond doubt ten minutes later after Catley’s pass into the box fell to the feet of Pledger, who despite seeing his initial shot well saved by keeper Jason Williams, emphatically fired in the rebound.

City stun visitors with cup masterclass FOOTBALL THE Wells City First team reached the semi-finals of the Somerset Premier Cup with an outstanding display against opponents from the division above them, Bridgwater Town.

It was the highlight of a month that saw them experience mixed fortunes in the league, before the suspension of matches due to the coronavirus epidemic.

The game against Bridgwater Town was goalless at half-time, though Wells came close on several occasions, and Harry Foster and Alex Camm both had goalbound efforts cleared off the line. But they were rewarded for a brilliant second half performance with three unanswered goals.

They got the goal they deserved on 70 minutes when

a long raking pass from Tom Hill was punched clear by Jake Viney, but with the ball falling to Craig Herrod the wide man did supremely well to half volley the ball back into the bottom corner of the Bridgwater net.

The home side soon doubled their advantage when Alex Camm created a goal out of nothing, lifting a shot from the right-hand side of the penalty area into the far corner of the net.

Wells City wrapped the game up on 87 minutes when a deep Craig Herrod corner was helped over the line at the back post by Dale Hunt.

They will now face Welton Rovers or Yeovil Town in the semi-finals.

disappointed to go home on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline.

The only goal came after 11 minutes when a brilliant 40-yard ball from inside his own half

Lebeq had a chance to draw level from the penalty spot five minutes before the break after Kieran Davis produced a clumsy tackle, but keeper Harley Wilkinson went the right way and got a strong hand to the ball to keep it out Wells thought they had a penalty of their own when Alex Camm was fouled in the box with a clumsy scissor tackle, but the referee overturned his decision after consulting with the linesman.

Three minutes into added

time, Wilkinson produced a stunning save he shouldn’t have been able to make from point blank range following a corner, before Jack Spence came up with a last ditch tackle to stop another one-on-one situation and preserve the three points.

Two weeks later, Wells City travelled to Hengrove, where a below-par performance saw them lose 3-2.

It looked promising after seven minutes when Craig Herrod put the visitors in front, but Hengrove struck back with three goals in 11 minutes from Adrian Thompson, Pete Sheppard and Sam Payne.

Harry Foster cut the deficit 20 minutes into the second half, volleying the ball in off the post from eight yards after a good cross from Craig Herrod, but Hengrove held out for an unlikely three points.

Some good wins before the shutdown RUGBY THE good news and the bad news. Let’s have the good news first.

Thanks to the efforts of the groundsmen some rugby has taken place in the last month.

The Wells First team have actually played four matches, losing away at Imperial and Stothert & Pitt, but having the satisfaction of convincingly beating old rivals Tor on the St Cuthbert’s Mill Ground in front of a huge crowd and beating Yatton by just a single point, Sam Garrett’s extra time conversion being the match winner.

The Second team have only managed one game, a victory at home over Burnham-on-Sea. The Colts beat Frome in the cup semi-final, whilst the Under 16s recorded a massive win over Kingswood.

The bad news, obviously coronavirius. Like virtually every sport, rugby is now shut down. The professionals at elite level may get going again with league matches being played later in year, but in the lower leagues that would be virtually impossible. So what happens now?

At the time of writing we are all in the dark, for instance the Wells First and Second teams both still have four fixtures outstanding. They are both safely positioned in mid-table in their respective leagues so promotion and relegation are not issue, but there is the not inconsiderable issue of loss of bar income to be
