Award should provide tourism boost From page 1 the requirements to earn this accolade.

Now more coach trips are likely to be made to Wells, with visitors staying for longer and spending more in the city as a result.

Ian Jefferies, director of Visit by Coach which has been working on the project with Wells’ City and Tourism Forum, was at the NEC in Birmingham on March 21 to collect the award.

“This award is great recognition of two years’ collaborative working by many groups and individuals within Wells,” he said.

“The accreditation is highly regarded within the industry and will hopefully reinforce the great name Wells has gained in the group travel world.

“It is fantastic that the tourism forum in Wells recognised the value of group travel and the huge financial impact it has on a destination and they all should be congratulated on their positive attitude that has now seen this national recognition.

“The project has grown at a rapid pace and the support of

n NEWS Seasalt applies to alter shopfront THE Seasalt fashion company has submitted two planning applications to Mendip District Council for the former Intersport Tony Pryce store in Wells High Street. Seasalt is proposing to replace the aluminium shopfront with a timber shopfront and new porch entrance, to use solid oak lettering and anchors on the fascia signage, to hang a button sign at first-floor level, and to replace the entrance tiling with a Seasalt mosaic.

New car wash plan A THREE-WEEK consultation period has come to an end on a planning application submitted to Mendip District Council by Bishops Way Ltd for a new canopy area and amenity cabin for a hand vehicle wash and valeting service on land at the Old Cold Store, Rowdens Road.

An application by farmer Mike Phelps for a hand car wash at Palace Farm was reported in February’s Wells Voice.

United action keeps 67 service running THE 67 bus service between Wells, Wedmore and Burnhamon-Sea has been saved for at least the next 12 months.

The service has been at risk ever since Somerset County Council decided to stop subsidising it last year because of declining passenger numbers.

Now most of the parish and town councils along the route have pledged financial support until at least the end of March 2019.

“It’s really good news. I know how many people out there need it, it’s a vital link for people to come into Wells,” said Denise Boulton, clerk of Wookey Parish Council, one of those contributing.

Councillor Ed Danson, chairman of St Cuthbert Out Parish Council, another of those which will be funding the service, said: “It’s a really important service for a rural community

and a lot of people were very concerned about how they were going to get anywhere.”

He thanked Wookey Hole Caves for making a donation of £500 to the parish council to help support the service.

Bovis Homes, which has been given permission to build 203 homes at the Priory Fields site on Wookey Hole Road, has offered to contribute £50,000 towards infrastructure and transport in the locality.

Councillor Danson said that St Cuthbert Out Parish Council hopes Bovis Homes funds can help subsidise the 67 bus service.

“Then it can keep going for a lot longer,” said Councillor Danson.

“With any luck, as the bus gets more use once all the new housing schemes along the route are completed, it will return to profitability.”

Parking time limit being considered A TIME limit on parking may be introduced in the vicinity of Stoberry Park school.

February’s PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meeting in Wells Town Hall was told that county council Highways engineers were considering the option to deal with congestion in the area.

Nearby residents have long complained about people parking outside their homes all day and adding to traffic problems when pupils are dropped off and collected from the school.

County councillor Tessa Munt told the PACT meeting that time-limited parking in marked bays, perhaps for two hours, was under discussion, along with other restrictions.

“At the moment there’s nothing to stop people parking there and they park there all day,” she said.

She said that there are 26 roads in Wells where people have asked her for parking or speed limit changes, and that she has passed these on to the Highways team who have come up with solutions for some, and are going to investigate others.

PSCO Donna President told the meeting that Waitrose car

park is to be closed to vehicles at 10pm each night from the end of March, following complaints at previous PACT meetings of antisocial behaviour by young car drivers who congregate there.

She said that she had had meetings with Waitrose representatives and said: “The car park used to be closed and will be again.”

She said that police already make regular calls at the car park when out on patrol, and will issue warning letters to people identified as causing a nuisance.

Wells City Council finance officer Steve Luck said that Speed Indicator Devices are going to be put up around Wells to encourage motorists to stick to the speed limits.

Sites suggested for them so far include St Thomas Street, Tor Street, Ash Road, Southover and Wookey Hole Road.

Residents are being asked to contact the city council with suggestions for more sites around Wells where they could be used.

Long-serving GP set to retire DR Tristan Martin is retiring at the end of March after 25 years with Wells City Practice.

Dr Martin has been a GP partner at the practice since 1993, but will be hanging up his stethoscope on March 29.

He said: “It has been a great pleasure and privilege to live and work in Wells for the last 25 years looking after thousands of patients.

“I will certainly miss the daily contact with patients, many of whom I have known since I joined the practice in 1993. I would especially like to thank every member of the wonderful team at Wells City Practice for their hard work and constant support over the years. They do a fantastic job and I wish them all

the very best for the future.”

The practice business manager, Nicky Billington, said: “He will be greatly missed by the other GPS, all of the staff and patients.”

Dr Martin’s patient list will be taken over by the practice’s new GP, Dr Timothy York, an experienced GP who has recently spent five years as a GP partner in Cardiff.

“This transition will happen automatically so no action needs to be taken by Dr Martin’s patients,” said Nicky. “If anyone has any concerns or questions about this, then they can speak to one of our receptionists who will be happy to help.” u GP surgeries update, page 13

n NEWS Art classes give food for thought SOME tasty artwork has been produced at a watercolour course being held at The Bishop’s Palace cafe.

Those attending have been focusing on the colour theory and natural form observations using expressive watercolour techniques on to A2 paper.

The course takes place every Tuesday evening until April 17, and is being run by Gemma Lane of Green Fox Workshops, who is planning more courses at The Bishop’s Palace in the future.

Secret ballots clause could be revoked A CLAUSE in Wells City Council’s Standing Orders that permits secret ballots in some council election processes could be revoked. The clause has been discussed at recent council meetings after pressure from campaigners concerned at the apparent lack of transparency surrounding secret ballots.

These can be used to elect councillors onto committees, to elect the mayor and deputy mayor, and for the election of a co-opted member – such as last September, when a Conservative councillor was co-opted, though some felt that a Green candidate should have been co-opted unopposed following the death of Green councillor Chris Briton.

The clause was discussed again by the finance and general purposes committee on March 8, when chairman Councillor Tony

Robbins recommended that it be dropped. He explained that the secret ballots process was legal, though rarely used, and concluded: “The Standing Order is useless, it doesn’t do anything.

“My suggestion is that me and the deputy mayor come up with ideas about how committees are formed and that the council revoke that Standing Order.”

A majority of councillors on the committee agreed with this proposal, and the recommendation was put forward to the next full council meeting. n The committee decided to give £2,000 towards fundraising for a third MRI scanner at Musgrove Park Hospital following a presentation by David Hayes of the hospital’s Love Musgrove charity. He said that nearly 10,000 people from the BA5

postcode had been seen at the hospital in 2016/17, and that £639,000 had been raised so far towards the £1 million target.

Councillor Maureen Brandon said that an MRI scanner at the hospital has probably saved her life by revealing a pulmonary embolism in a lung, which is now being treated before she has an operation there. “I can’t support them enough. My operation, which was delayed, could have killed me if the embolism had not been spotted and treated in advance of surgery,” she said.

Councillor Celia Wride said: “A scanner was used in my husband’s illness. I fully support this and think we should make a substantial donation.”

Councillors also voted to release the £3,000 annual grant they donate to Wells & Mendip Museum for its tourism work

after an update on activity from Andy Webb. n Work on the Changing Places specialist disabled toilet that is being created in the old registrar’s room is well under way, and it is hoped that the facility will be ready in mid-April.

The council is looking into the possibility of installing mains-fed water dispensers for people to be able to refill bottles at the Town Hall and the bus station. n Two possible sites have been identified for the telephone box being converted to house a defibrillator, one outside the Town Hall and one inside. The location will depend on the safe supply of electricity.

The council has paid £1 for the telephone box, which is being relocated from Wookey Hole Road and believed to be the last of its type in Wells.

Initiative a way of remembering brother A FUNDRAISING concert for mental health charities is being organised in Wells by a company director whose brother took his own life after a period of mental ill health.

Richard Lowe, who runs a local training company, started the Music for the Mind initiative ten years ago to raise funds for Mind charities and to raise mental health awareness.

His brother James was just 30 years old when he took his own life.

“When I look back, I believe James was concerned about the stigma that can often be associated with those suffering from mental health conditions which is why it’s so important to encourage greater understanding,” said Richard.

“It’s my hope that Music for the Mind will continue to help fund local mental health services, community and business education to support those

experiencing emotional distress and mental health issues.”

Local Mind charities provide practical support and advice for local communities and employers and Richard hopes that businesses and individuals will affiliate with Music for the Mind to stage an array of musical extravaganzas across the region as organisers, volunteers or sponsors.

Richard said that back in 2008 he wanted to volunteer his skills to do something positive to remember James and raise mental health awareness.

“The vision, ten years on, is to build on the original concept and inspire others to organise their own Music for the Mind fundraising event,” he said.

According to Mind, one in four people in the UK experiences a mental health problem every year. Research carried out by NatCen Social Research and the University

of Leicester and published in 2016 revealed that the numbers of both men and women who reported self-harming, or having suicidal thoughts, has increased in recent years.

With mental health services likely to face increased demand, provision of those services faces an uncertain future. The majority of care – about 80 per cent – is provided by mental health trusts.

Richard’s own fundraising concert will be held on September 15 at Cedars Hall.

The concert will feature the performers of Bath-based Vocal Works Gospel Choir who will provide backing for an ensemble of musical talent.

A PRE-RELEASE screening of computer-animated rom-com Sherlock Gnomes is one of the highlights of this year’s Wells Festival of Film.

Featuring the voices of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt and Johnny Depp, and with original music by Elton John, the film sees Gnomeo and Juliet recruit Sherlock Gnomes to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a number of garden gnomes.

The film will be on general release at Wells Film Centre on May 11 but before that there will be a special screening on April 28 during the film festival.

Campaign to cut plastic use seeing results Laura Sørensen of Plastic Free Wells explains what action is being taken to reduce plastic use in Wells as the city bids to become the first in the UK to gain Plastic Free status THERE’S a lot of rubbish talked about rubbish these days.

But there’s one thing we can probably all agree on – there’s an awful lot of it. We like to think it is being recycled, properly, by our local authorities, but then we find out it isn’t. The hundreds of tonnes that was being sent to China for disposal now isn’t and our Government doesn’t really know what to do with the millions of tonnes of our daily detritus.

Much of that is plastic.

There is a prediction that if current production and waste management trends continue, roughly 12 billion tonnes of plastic waste will be in landfill or the natural environment by the year 2050. Because plastics do not break down in the environment, some will remain for as long as 500 years, they add to the waste mountain and are increasingly hard to get rid of (burning them produces toxic fumes), so it is vital we all stop using single-use items.

We in Wells have been doing something about this recently to cut down on single-use plastics so that the city can gain Plastic Free status.

Following an initiative by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), who managed to get Penzance to be the first town to go single-use plastic-free, members of the

The response has been brilliant, with many businesses already taking action. The SAS model asks hospitality businesses if they would consider getting rid of plastic cutlery, plastic straws, take-away boxes, condiment sachets, coffee cups and other items which are generally used once and then thrown away, and

replace them with metal, plantbased, paper and compostable items. Who knows, we might see the return of the retro tomatoshaped sauce dispensers on cafe tables.

So far, seven businesses have signed up to replace at least three of their single-use plastics with suitable alternatives: Bar Italia, The Bishop’s Table, The Ancient Gatehouse Hotel/Rugantinos Restaurant, The Greek Taverna, Kitty Banks, Square Edge and The Swan Hotel. A further five have signed up to replace at least one single-use plastic.

There are many more local

businesses which have already eliminated their single-use plastics and so are unable to sign up.

Wells Women’s Institute has asked members to take their own mugs to meetings for drinks, and is replacing the current polystyrene cups with compostable ones (mainly for visitors).

WI members have also sent letters to local supermarkets and signed petitions urging them to make a radical reduction in single-use plastic packaging, including the elimination of rolls of plastic bags provided for loose produce.

Schools and community groups are being encouraged to get on board and there have been illuminating comments posted on our Facebook page which illustrate how aware some children are about the problems of the throw-away society in their own schools.

Wells City Council was also due to discuss its support for this initiative at a meeting on March 22.

We are hoping this community action will bring businesses and customers together, and we can spread the word about where in Wells you can buy items like bamboo or collapsible coffee cups, reusable container lids to replace cling film and reusable water bottles.

The service also celebrates the work of the courts and the legal system in the county. “I had the opportunity to talk to people on the front line of water purification and the sewage treatment process, which was the focus of our presentation,” said Harry.

“It felt like a privilege to be chosen as one of 23 people from across the entire region and I definitely think other companies should follow the example of getting teenagers involved.”

Most of the panellists agreed that social media should play a key role in targeting their own age demographic and tackling sewer misuse like flushing wet wipes down the toilet.

A SIXTH-FORMER from Wells Cathedral School outlined his plans to tackle blocked drains and sewers as part of Wessex Water’s Young People’s Panel.

Harry Hastilow was part of a 23-strong panel recruited by the company, tasked with pitching innovative ideas to directors, managers and other key staff.

Students spent a day learning how a water and sewerage company operates before returning two months later to give presentations and compete for team prizes.

Panel members also completed online assignments and kept in touch via a private Facebook group.

In return they received a formal reference for use in UCAS or apprenticeship applications and a £100 reward.

Top prizes on offer in art competition

A NATIONAL press launch, an exhibition at London’s prestige JGM Gallery and a cheque for £1,000 are among the first of many lucrative prizes in the 2018 Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) competition.

The call for entries is now open on the WAC website.

WAC, which runs during October in The Bishop’s Palace and is in its sixth year, has always been about promoting local artists and their practice.

But it has grown from a purely local focus to realise the ambition of co-founder Kate Noble for these same artists to leave their comfort zone and measure their talent and vision in the heat of international competition.

From its inception, WAC has thought big and reached out to challenge assumptions of where

great work is being done.

“Two previous winners, Frances Borden and Dominic Bradnum, have already shown what the competition can do to showcase ability and promote a career,” said Paddy O’Hagan, chair of WAC. “We want that possibility for all artists in our catchment, aspiring or established.

We’re building this to be the most influential and exciting contemporary art competition in the West Country.”

It helps that the judging panels have read like an honours board of the most able and influential in the field: Roy Ackerman, Maria Lalic, Mariele Neudecker, Michael Porter, Anita Taylor, Richard Wentworth and the controversial Royal portraitist and Cathedral School

The appointment of the Parker Harris visual arts consultancy promises the competition, its entrants and finalists a high profile and broad national exposure.

At its fifth anniversary last year, WAC staged a highly successful exhibition of new work by past winners in The Bishop’s Palace. The Palace will again be the venue for an exhibition of this year’s shortlist from October 8-22.

Improved access You can now access routine appointments in the evening and at the weekend if you are registered with a Somerset GP. Wells City Practice, Park Medical Practice, Grove House Surgery, Oakhill Surgery and Wells Heath Centre are coming together to provide clinic time until 8pm Monday to Friday and also on Saturday mornings from 9am-11am. Any patient registered with one of these surgeries can request an appointment.

Each surgery will take turns in offering a late-night clinic throughout the week and on Saturdays. Health staff working evenings and weekends will have access to your medical records and will be able to provide the same high standard of care as patients would expect during normal opening times.

Your record will only ever be accessed with your consent and all information will be kept confidential.

The receptionist will advise you of the time and location of your appointment.

There was great excitement at West Mendip Hospital when Charlie the donkey visited the patients. He was given a warm welcome by staff, patients and visitors, and he was clearly used to being a VIP. He behaved beautifully as smiling patients patted him and fed him special donkey treats. Charlie’s visit was arranged by the hospital chaplain as part of the Easter celebrations, and he is pictured above with staff and chaplaincy members. Before his arrival the patients had enjoyed some singing, story telling and a delicious tea.

Anti-social behaviour not treated lightly

News from the local policing team with PC Darren Pearson

ANTI-SOCIAL Behaviour (ASB) is defined as “Behaviour by a person which causes or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons not of the same household as the person”.

ASB in one of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s priorities and the police in Wells receive on average 60 reports of ASB every quarter.

The behaviours are wide ranging and include littering, vandalism, public drunkenness, noisy or abusive neighbours, children knocking on doors and running away, vehicles racing up and down a road, and individuals meeting in car parks causing noise and disturbance.

Anti-social behaviour is often perceived as ‘low level’. Some of these behaviours make people’s lives a misery. When personally targeted and persistent, it can have a devastating impact on a victim’s life. This is why we now

treat our vulnerable, intimidated and persistently targeted victims as we would a victim of crime and manage our investigations, safeguarding and actions to resolve the underlying causes of the problem or problems.

Our victims can now access support to help them cope and recover through the Lighthouse Victim Care Team or via www. lighthousevictimcare.org/ Locally we have been working with Waitrose and Mendip District Council to try and stop the ASB which is taking place in Waitrose car park.

We have reports of cars racing on the top car park, groups of youths gathering causing noise, and possible drug taking in the vicinity. All of which is having a detrimental effect on nearby residents and Waitrose customers.

To try and tackle these problems Waitrose will now be closing their gate at 10pm to stop any vehicle noise after this time, the police will be conducting regular patrols in the area using stop and search powers in regards to the possible drug use, section 59 of the police reform

Act 2002 for vehicles being driven without due care and attention in a public place and the Crime & Policing Act 2014 for the ASB in the area.

Any offender committing ASB will receive a warning letter from the police and if they continue they will be issued with a Community Protection Warning.

If they ignore this and commit further ASB, they will be issued with a Community Protection Notice which if breached, can result in court action and ultimately a Criminal Behaviour Order, and if they breach the CBO a prison sentence can be imposed.

Our aim is to tackle antisocial behaviour in a way that reduces its impact on victims and communities, develops understanding, learning and resolution for perpetrators, reduces harm and manages persistent perpetrators through appropriate justice resolutions.

Search for man in damage inquiry POLICE have released images of a man they would like to identify after fence panels were damaged in Princes Road, Wells.

“We believe he may have information to help us with our enquiries into criminal damage in Princes Road in Wells at about 3.20am on February 11,” said a spokesman.

“A man damaged a number of

fencing panels by kicking them.

We know a group of several men were in the area at the time of the incident who might be able to help us.

Choir on move as it looks to future THE Wells Good Afternoon Choir has a new rehearsal venue.

More than 70 members attend the Tuesday afternoon sessions which were first held in St Cuthbert’s Church but have now moved to Seager Hall in Union Street.

The choir was started in January by choir leader Grenville Jones. The accompanist is Sheila Ross who is well known to many in Wells through her association with a number of music organisations.

“We always welcome new members to come along and find out more about our non-audition friendly choir. Our thanks go to St Cuthbert’s for hosting our start-up rehearsals and we look forward to the future and Tuesday afternoons at the Seager Hall,” said Grenville.

Road Safety n In response to local concerns, the city council is making arrangements to purchase a Speed Indicator Device for Wells; we have consulted with the public on potential locations via the recent PACT meeting and shall be working in partnership with the police and Somerset County Council to monitor speeding traffic on the city’s roads.

Appeal for backing to help involve young THE Wells Theatre Festival is asking more people to contribute to a crowdfunding campaign to raise money to support community activity around the event.

The fundraising campaign run through crowdfunding website Kickstarter has a target of £8,000 which must be raised by April 23. Money raised will help fund the running costs of the community production of Romeo and Juliet and other technical elements of the festival.

It will also ensure that as many young people as possible have the opportunity to take part through the provision of transport to and from the festival for local school children.

The theatre festival, the first in Wells, takes place from July 12-15.

Clubhouse ceiling collapses as cold weather takes its toll HEAVY snow twice in the space of two weeks in March caused travel disruption, closed schools and forced the cancellation of numerous events and sporting fixtures.

The ‘Beast from the East’ also caused extensive damage to Wells Football Club’s clubhouse after burst pipes brought ceilings down.

Water leaking through the kitchen ceiling was spotted by a member of the archery club, and club steward Sonia Higgins was notified. A second leak was found, and 1st team manager Nathan Truckle, club stalwart Neil Sheppard and reserve team player Martyn Sheppard turned off the water supply, made the electrics safe and started the process of cleaning up and assessing the damage.

Damage to the Wells FC clubhouse “A small working party was hastily arranged for the following morning with thanks to Globe Carnival Club and a few football club members who appeared with mops, buckets and dehumidifiers,” said club chairman Steve Loxton.

“Later that morning the ceiling in the Golding Suite collapsed, narrowly missing 1st team physio Steve Vowles.”

Work is now well under way to repair the damage and get the club back up and running.

“Thankfully we are fully insured, but that doesn’t make up for the inconvenience to those that had booked the club for parties etc, or the immediate loss that the club has had to suffer and the extra work that has ensued for a few already hard working individual,” said Steve.

“We would like to apologise to all who have been affected by this, and to thank those individuals who came out on the Saturday and Sunday to help, with a special mention to Globe Carnival Club and Martin Coppell.”

Wells Cathedral School pupils went to the aid of the residents at Abbeyfield after the snowfall in early March. Pupils from Cedars House spent a morning clearing the snow from the disabled ramp and front of the house leading on to New Street. Isobel Panton, the administrator, said: ‘We would like to thank all the pupils who came to the rescue after the heavy snow and freezing rain to ensure that our residents stayed safe.’

“WCC submitted detailed consultation comments to Mendip District Council, particularly in relation to open spaces in the city. As soon as MDC indicates what will be included in the Wells section of the Mendip Local Plan, the Neighbourhood Plan can be progressed. In the meantime, councillors have kept the framework for the Neighbourhood Plan under informal review, they have also attended training and information sessions, and are developing a network of relevant contacts in the community in readiness to move the project forward.”

Veg supplier turns back clock

More big names added to bill

SHAWN Goodman is harking back to a bygone age with his fruit and veg business in Market Street.

He opened The Veg Shed five months ago to supply top quality fresh produce while bringing people together.

He is now on first name terms with most of his customers and has been so successful that he has started delivering weekly fruit and veg boxes to people up to 20 miles away.

He also provides supplies to the Connect Centre, LOAF and the Queen Street Deli.

Shawn had worked as a chef for more than 20 years, starting in the RAC in London before moving on to The Globe Inn in Wells, where he worked for six years, and then Weston and Burnham Golf Club and Wells Golf Club.

He owned the Westbury Inn for a while, cooked and supplied school meals to local schools,

Other new additions include Newsjack’s Angela Barnes, Cheddar boy Richard Herring with Oh Frig, I’m 50!, Harry Potter actress Jessie Cave, acclaimed wordsmith Scroobius Pip with his Distraction Pieces Podcast, Edinburgh Comedy Award-winner Adam Riches and Soccer AM presenter Lloyd Griffith.

As is Wells Comedy Festival tradition, the Comedians Cinema Club will be closing out the festival with their live, chaotic, alcohol-fuelled reinterpretation of Hot Fuzz.

Several shows are already sold out, including those by Sara Pascoe, Mark Watson and Rhod Gilbert.

“I decided to hang up my chef’s apron, changing direction to supply fresh local ingredients

instead of just preparing them,” he said.

“I saw an opportunity to pull the community back together, back to the bygone ages of local independent stores, where people would gather, shop weekly and be on a first-name basis with their shopkeepers.”

Shawn is up early three days a week to buy produce at Bristol market and bring it back to The Veg Shed in Wells.

He says that it is high quality, competitively priced – and nearly completely packaging free.

“The local greengrocers has been brought back to the high street, and it’s here to stay,” he said.

“With the sad closure of several independents, it’s nice to demonstrate to the people of Wells that there are thriving local independent stores.”

The drop-in sessions are being held on Mondays from 1.30pm-3pm at the Heads Up building in Upper Breach, South Horrington.

“We’re trying to attract people who are on their own and haven’t got anywhere to go, and let them know that there is someone out there who will make them a cup of tea and welcome them,” said Heads Up volunteer Mike Burrows.

Mike also runs tai chi classes at Heads Up, and said that the activity is particularly good for dementia sufferers because they can follow his lead and do not have to commit anything to memory.

J K Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, said Elizabeth Goudge’s Little White Horse was her favourite book as a child and one of the very few with direct influence on her series about the boy wizard.

Elizabeth was an English author of novels, short stories and children’s books who won the Carnegie Medal for British children’s books in 1946 for The Little White Horse.

She was a best-selling author in both the UK and the US from the 1930s into the 1970s.

Change of location but ethos remains same AFTER the silver anniversary celebration in 2017, the Wells Festival of Literature is looking forward to the 26th festival from an exciting new standpoint: it is changing location.

The 2018 festival, which runs from October 19-27, will take place in the city’s newest performance hall, Cedars Hall.

This state-of-the-art facility will provide the festival with a comfortable, modern and convenient venue in which to stage a wide variety of events, all

designed to celebrate the written word and encourage a love of books and reading.

Festival organisers have expressed their thanks to the Bishop’s Palace for its hospitality over the past years and assured their audiences that they are taking their ethos with them; their aims will remain the

same and they say that they will continue to provide an entertaining, informative and inspirational festival.

They will also be developing their educational programme, an element of their activities that has grown enormously over the past years.

In 2017 the festival donated £20,000 to educational projects in the local area, and this year the programme has already got off to a good start. In the past month the festival helped fund two

author visits: Abi Elphinstone went to Ashcott School, while Steve Voake ran a creative writing day at North Curry Primary School. It also arranged for popular poet/rapper Inja to work with the students of The Fosse Way School and The Mendip School.

Organisers are proud of the Festival of Literature’s record of working with young people in this way, and are grateful to the supporters and sponsors whose generosity enables the festival to provide a raft of opportunities that school budgets are unable to cover.

New venue for SOUP lunch FOUR good causes will pitch for hundreds of pounds in the latest Wells SOUP lunch on Saturday, April 14 – and all will come away with an award.

SOUP has helped 31 charities so far, four more will present this time and Somerset Area Cruse Bereavement Group will tell how they spent the £350 received at the January SOUP. The four are Wells City Band, Mid Somerset Tinnitus Care Group, Connect Community Outreach of Wells, and Freewheelers blood bikes who provide an out of hours courier service for the NHS in Somerset.

The SOUP will take place from 1-2pm on April 14 in a new venue, the Connect Centre, at the corner of Chamberlain Street and Portway, Wells BA5 2BE. The lunch costs £5 and arrive at 12.45pm to get a good seat.

The organisers are Wells Independents who want to thank the event’s sponsor Probusiness, Waitrose for giving the vegetables, Burns the Bread the bread, Sante the wines, Morrisons the beer and soft drinks, as well as Micky in Wells market for the flowers.

Top tips to improve wellbeing at home Housebuilder Crest Nicholson has been working with wellness expert Jacqueline Harvey to provide advice on how people in Wells can improve their physical and mental wellbeing this spring Grow your own produce When living in a city, there is a tendency to consume too much processed or chilled foods that can be eaten on the go or quickly prepared after a busy day. To improve your wellbeing you should change your diet to make it as fresh and clean as possible, sticking to simple, locallysourced products.

If you have the space, I recommend growing your own local produce in your back garden. Rural locations are better suited to this, whereas in cities properties are predominantly flats or apartments lacking access to outside space or a garden.

However, if you only have a

small garden or limited space, growing herbs in your kitchen or tomatoes on your balcony can be really rewarding too. Gardening and cultivating your own produce has been proven to lower stress, keep you physically strong, and give you the satisfaction of creating something for yourself.

Practice mindfulness Meditation and mindfulness are two important processes for calming the body and relieving stress. If you have the time, set aside ten minutes each morning to meditate.

This enables you to focus and remove yourself from external pressures, which has a hugely soothing influence on the body and is immensely beneficial to your mental wellbeing.

Digital detox Take a break from phones and the internet to calm

your mind, and use it as a chance to reconnect with your environment. We are becoming increasingly cut off from nature and dependent on technology, and living in a world that is almost a virtual reality.

Take a digital detox by setting aside time in the evenings and at weekends with no ‘screen time’ to concentrate on spending time with your loved ones and prevent yourself from being contactable 24 hours of every day. This will also stimulate your creativity to flow more freely, as you can transfer your energy spent scrolling, liking and sharing into something imaginative, original, and tangible.

Get involved Moving to the countryside can be a daunting experience, particularly if you’re moving away from an urban area you’ve grown accustomed to. Some

of my clients have praised the benefit of moving into a newbuild property. New build homes come as a blank canvas, and unlike many period homes, do not need any time-consuming renovations. This means residents are able to get out and enjoy their new community straight away.

When relocating to a new area, it is important to venture out to the local community as soon as you can, to immerse yourself in your new neighbourhood and get to know people in the surrounding areas. In Wells, there are lots of community groups local residents can join.

Getting involved in a new community and engaging with local residents is fantastic for mental wellbeing, as it fosters a sense of belonging and builds a rapport with your new neighbours.

Golf club’s 125th anniversary year off to good start WELLS Golf Club members and guests marked the start of their 125th year celebrations with a gourmet dinner in the Clubhouse Restaurant.

A series of other social events are planned throughout the year together with new initiatives to encourage ladies to start playing for the first time or get back into golf.

Karen Alexander, Marketing Executive for Wells Golf Club, is herself new to golf and said: “We are delighted with the number of ladies who have already joined our new ‘Ladies Learn Golf’ beginners group coaching sessions. “It’s great fun and lovely to see how quickly some ladies have

already caught the ‘golf bug’, returning to practice on the driving range between coaching sessions. “We were keen to offer beginners courses during the winter months so by the time the warmer weather and lighter evenings arrive we have built up a level of confidence to take full advantage of our spectacular parkland course facilities and reward ourselves with a relaxing drink on the clubhouse balcony afterwards.�

n NEWS IN BRIEF Waste day changes EASTER will bring waste day changes for every household in Somerset.

Pick-ups due on Good Friday, March 30, will take place on Saturday, March 31, while no collections on Easter Monday, April 2, mean all that week’s kerbside services are one day later, including Friday pick-ups on Saturday, April 7.

All recycling sites remain on their usual schedules, with nine sites open on Good Friday, and all 16 on Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.

Later bank holidays in 2018 – on Monday, May 7, May 28, and August 27 – will also each mean a week of one-day-later collections, including Friday pick-ups on Saturdays, but no changes for recycling sites.

Sale of paintings THE residue of the studio of the late Peter Coate, RWA, will be on sale in the Meeting Room of Wells & Mendip Museum from May 1 to June 10.

Proceeds from the sale will be given to Somerset Wildlife Trust and to the museum.

Peter, who had an exhibition about four years ago at the museum, was a prolific and well known painter of the countryside in Somerset, especially of the Levels and on Mendip. His work is in many private and gallery collections.

The sale, at which prices will be very low, can form part of a museum visit and the usual museum entrance fee of £3 will apply. The museum is open daily from 10am-5pm (not Sundays).

Charity fashion show

The Bishop’s Palace has opened a new snack bar in The Dragon’s Lair play area in response to requests from visitors for somewhere to buy refreshments. The Hungry Dragon will sell refreshments and snacks, such as hot and cold drinks, ice creams, sausage rolls and pasties.

The cafe was launched on March 24, and will be open from 11.30am3.30pm on Wednesdays, Saturday, Sundays and all school holidays and bank holidays. A new prison bastion viewing platform, above, is also due to open at the Palace in the free area of the site on March 30.

All welcome at tennis club open day WELLS Tennis Club is offering the chance for local people to give the game a try at their open day on Saturday, April 21.

All five courts and two mini courts will be packed with free tennis-related activities from 9.30am until 2pm. As well as a chance to try tennis with awardwinning coach Kevin Durney, refreshments and discounted memberships will be on offer.

Visitors don’t need a racquet – just some enthusiasm to give tennis a go.

The club now has more than 200 members who enjoy regular social games, competitions and discounted coaching at its site next to the football club on Rowdens Road.

A 2016 study by Oxford University found that people who enjoyed racquet sports also enjoyed a longer life compared to other sports. Researchers attributed the life-saving benefits of racquet sports to the mental and social benefits that go with the sport for all ages.

Six ladies from Wells Tennis Club travelled to Wincanton Tennis Club on February 24 for some friendly matches in the winter sun. Captain Julia Nest said: ‘We had a great warm up practice in anticipation for the summer league with some fun tennis in some crisp winter conditions. Thank you to Claire Watson and the team from Wincanton TC for being wonderful hosts.’

Cricket club Easter Craft Fayre WELLS Cricket Club is holding an Easter Craft Fayre on Good Friday, March 30, and Saturday, March 31.

Stalls will include jewellery, woodcraft, cards, an indoor botanist, a photographer, clothing and candle/wax.

New members invited to take up aikido WELLS Aikido Club (Aikido Alive) is currently looking for new members.

Aikido is a non-violent, noncompetitive Japanese martial art that includes unarmed and weapon disciplines.

The club was established in autumn 2017 following the relocation from London to Somerset of teacher Bjorn Saw (5th dan).

Bjorn has one of the longest experiences of studying traditional Iwama Takemusu Aikido in the UK having begun his training in 1974, and including extended periods in Japan learning from the senior students of Aikido’s founder Morihei Ueshiba.

He continues to split his time teaching Aikido both in London and in Wells.

The club is a member of the United Kingdom Aikikai (UKA) with links and affiliation to Aikikai Hombu dojo, the

It maintains good contacts with other Aikido and related organisations across the UK, participating in seminars and other activities to explore the physical and spiritual aspects of the art.

of levels of experience in the club including members returning to Aikido after extended periods away from training.

Practice sessions are currently on a weekly basis on Sunday mornings at 10am-11.30am at locations in and near Wells.

MENDIP Golf Club has welcomed 27-year-old Josh Hirst, pictured on the right, as the new assistant teaching professional.

Previously head of coaching at Rushmore Golf Club, in Wiltshire, Josh has held teaching positions in Spain and at the David Leadbetter Academy in Leeds, where he was head of the Junior Academy.

He has been recruited to support head professional Stuart Disney, particularly with his work out in the community.

Seventeen youngsters from Oakhill Primary School have recently signed up for a five-week

course of coaching and talks are ongoing with two further schools.

To introduce himself to the Mendip members, Josh is offering, during his early weeks, half-hour lessons for £10.

Mendip is holding a Junior Golf Competition on Saturday, April 7, called Drive, Chip and Putt. The driving will take place on the simulator and the chipping and putting will take place on the chipping and putting greens.
