Poetry Contest!

Poetic Power does a short story contest in the Fall and a poetry contest in the Spring.

Every year, students can submit a piece of poetry they have written. They learn numerous styles and topics range, from history to personal experiences.

The contest is open to middle school students in a number of states; states west of the Rocky Mountains. Any school can enter, and students may only submit 1 poem.

The overall winners win a cash prize. The winners that have their poems picked, give permission to have it printed, and that is their prize... being a published poet!

There is no theme per book. Any style poem may be submitted on any appropriate topic.

Parents may purchase a book and the teacher gets a copy to have in their classroom for bragging rights. :) For the 2020-21 school year, Wells had 90+ submissions, and 45 students were picked to be published poets!

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Month of September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) is recognized during the month of September by different childhood cancer organizations around the globe.

Childhood Cancer Facts: - Cancer is diagnosed each year in about 400,000 children and adolescents ages 19 and under worldwide.

- Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease past infancy for U.S. children.

- However, thanks to better therapies, more than 80% of U.S. childhood cancer patients now become long-term survivors.

- Survival rates vary depending on the type of cancer.

- About 483,000 childhood cancer survivors live in the U.S., with many more around the world - 1 in 285 kids will be diagnosied with cancer.

Cocoa Dipped Caramel Candy Apples Ingredients: Medium sized apples, washed and dried completely (amount as per needed) 10 ounces of wrapped caramel candies or caramel bits, melted 12 ounces of Light cocoa candy, melted ½ cup chopped walnuts 5-inch bamboo lollipop sticks, 20 count

Instructions 1.Dip apples in caramel. Place parchment triangles on a cookie sheet and spray the triangles with non-stick spray. Next, insert the bamboo lollipop sticks into the apples near the stems.

Melt store bought or homemade caramel apple dip on the stove in a saucepan over medium low heat and then dip the apples completely according to the package directions. Use a spoon, if necessary, to help cover them completely.

Tap the apples gently on the edge of the saucepan to smooth and remove any excess caramel. Place the caramel dipped apples on parchment or wax paper.

Allow the caramel to set, which should take about 15 minutes.

2. Dip apples in light cocoa candy. Melt the light cocoa Candy Melts candy in a microwave-safe bowl according to the package directions. Dip about 3/4ths of each apple in the melted light cocoa candy.

Once the apple is appropriately covered, tap it on the edge of the bowl to smooth and remove excess melted chocolate candy.

Immediately sprinkle with the chopped nuts. Place apples on the parchment triangle-lined cookie pan.

Chill in the refrigerator to set, should take about 5 to 10 minutes.

Reserve the remaining melted light cocoa candy in a parchment bag. Cut the bag when ready to decorate with the remaining melted light cocoa candy.

3. Decorate apples. Use the reserved melted light cocoa candy to drizzle candy on apples. Place apples on a parchment paper triangle-lined cookie pan. Chill again in the refrigerator until they set, should take about another 5 to 10 minutes.

Oreo Fluff Ingredients: 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 14 ounces (1 can) sweetened condensed milk 16 ounces whipped topping 16 Oreos, roughly broken

Instructions 1.Place cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk in a stand mixer and blend on high for 1 minute. (Or use a hand-held mixer on high for 3-5 minutes.)

2. Remove bowl from mixer and hand fold in whipped topping.

3. Add broken Oreo's to topping and stir until incorporated. (Save a few Oreo crumbles to sprinkle on top)

4. Chill until serving or eat immediately.

Chocolate Mug Cake Ingredients:

1/4 cup all purpose flour 1/4 cup white sugar 2 tablespoons unsweetened coco powder 1/8 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons milk 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 tablespoon water 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions 1. Mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a large microwavesafe mug; stir in milk, canola oil, water, and vanilla extract

2. Cook in microwave until cake is done in the middle, about 1 minute 45 seconds.

Lemon Bars

Ingredients 1 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup white sugar 2 cups all purpose flour 4 eggs 1 1/2 cup white sugar 1/4 cup all purpose flour 2 lemons, juiced

Instructions 1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2. In a medium bowl, blend together softened butter, 2 cups flour and 1/2 cup sugar. Press into the bottom of an ungreased 9x13 inch pan.

3. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until firm and golden. In another bowl, whisk together the remaining 1 1/2 cups sugar and 1/4 cup flour. Whisk in the eggs and lemon juice. Pour over the baked crust.

4. Bake for an additional 20 minutes in the preheated oven.

The bars will firm up as they cool.

Chocolate Chip Cookies Ingredients 1/2 cup white sugar 3/4 cup brown sugar ,packed 1 teaspoon of salt 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/4 cup all purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking salt 4oz chocolate chips

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2.In a large bowl, whisk together the sugars, salt, and butter until a paste forms with no lumps.

3. Whisk in the egg and vanilla, beating until light ribbons fall off the whisk and remain for a short while before falling back into the mixture.

4. Sift in the flour and baking soda, then fold the mixture with a spatula (Be careful not to overmix, which would cause the gluten in the flour to toughen resulting in cakier cookies).

5. Fold in the chocolate chunks, then chill the dough for at least 30 minutes. For a more intense toffeelike flavor and deeper color, chill the dough overnight. The longer the dough rests, the more complex its flavor will be.

6. Scoop the dough onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, leaving at least 4 inches of space between cookies and 2 inches of space from the edges of the pan so that the cookies can spread evenly. And then bake for 12-15 minutes or untill golden brown

Dolphin Facts!

The wolves' main threat to survival is loss of habitat and persecution by humans 4. Their sprinting speed is usually 36 to 38 miles per hour for short distances 5. Their normal diet consists of hoofed animals, such as deer, moose, and bison

Humming Bird Facts!

1. Hummingbirds are birds native to the Americas and comprise the biological family Trochilidae.

2. With about 360 species, they occur from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, but the vast majority of the species are found in the tropics.

3. They are small birds, with most species measuring 7.5–13 cm in length

4. These amazing birds only have a lifespan of about 3-5 years

5. Their heartbeat is 1,260 beats per minute!

Giraffe Facts!

1. The giraffe is an African artiodactyl mammal, the tallest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant.

2. It is traditionally considered to be one species, Giraffa camelopardalis, with nine subspecies.

3.Giraffe are predominantly browsers and mainly eat leaves and buds on trees and shrubs. They will also eat herbs, climbers and vines, and prefer flowers and fruit when in season. The proportion of grass in their diet is very low.

4. They can run up to 37 mph (their maxim) 5. Northern Giraffe can be from 15 ft - 20 ft tall!

Lion Facts 1.

The lion is a large felid of the genus Panthera native to Africa and India.

2. It has a muscular, deep-chested body, short, rounded head, round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail.

3. Lions usually hunt and eat medium-sized to large hoofed animals like wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes.

They occasionally also prey on larger animals, especially sick or injured ones, and eat found meat such as carrion.

4. No predators hunt lions to eat them; however, they do have a few natural enemies, such as hyenas and cheetahs.

5. Hyenas compete with lions for food and often try to steal their kills.

Polar Bear Facts!

1. The polar bear is a hypercarnivorous bear whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean 2.It is the largest extant bear species, as well as the largest extant land carnivore.

3.Unlike other bear species, polar bears are almost exclusively meat eaters (carnivorous). They mainly eat ringed seals, but may also eat bearded seals.

4. Polar bears hunt seals by waiting for them to come to the surface of sea ice to breathe.

Whatever the case, you can watch scenes from both of these plays at the WMS Drama Shakespeare Showcase on October 28 and 29 at 7:00 in the MPR. Tickets are free, but there is a recommended donation at the door. See you there!
