Student and Teacher Interviews

Ms. Schoenthal H21 Course 2/3 Math Ms. Schoenthal is in her fifth year of teaching. This is her first year teaching middle schoolers. For the past 4 years, Ms. Schoenthal taught math at DHS. She says, "Teaching middle school is really fun." and "I feel like middle school students are very motivated to learn new things and are excited about everything." She said, "I worked as a high school volunteer that is when I realized I love to teach." When she taught high school, she once planned an escape room for Halloween. She said, "Locked inside was a single paper scroll with the lyrics to, Never Gonna Give You Up" Her main goal for teaching this year is helping students adjust back to in-person learning.

Mrs. McBride H11 Core 7, English 8 Mrs. McBride is in her 7th year of teaching. She taught at Don Callejon School in Santa Clara for 4 years. She has done 1 year at Fallon. This is her second year at Wells. She says, "I love Wells! Everyone has such an investment in everyone else and a sense of team spirit." She got into teaching when she got a summer job in high school working at a kids' camp, and she really loved sharing facts, ideas, and skills with kids. An interesting moment during class is, "My now husband proposed during the school day. A vice principal came into my class and said a parent needed to talk to me in the office. I walked out into the empty hallway and there he was, on his knee and with a ring." Her goal for this year is to focus on enjoying being back and the social interactions.

Mr. Luu H26 Science 6/8 Mr. Luu is a 6th and 8th grade science teacher, who teaches in room H26. He has been teaching for 7 years and loves spending time with his students and learning from them. He wanted to become a teacher because, “ I fell into it, and really liked teaching.” Something funny that happened to him, was when he was walking on the sidewalk, and was rammed by a kid that was running. His goals for teaching this year are to provide a better structure for students and have opportunities that are outside of the box.

Ms. Huff H01 Course 1/2 Ms. Huff is in her 16th year of teaching. Ms. Huff lived in Sacramento for 4 years. She then moved to Southern California, where she taught there for 11 years. Over the summer, her family moved back to the Bay Area. This is not Ms. Huff's first year teaching middle school, in fact she has taught middle school her entire career. She says, "I have always taught middle school, which is such a fun age group - students develop unique personalities and really start to figure out who they are." Ms. Huff's love of teaching started in high school. "When I was in high school, I started teaching swim lessons." Ms. Huff's goal for this year is, "I hope to make my math classes engaging for students."

Shruthi Valliappan

Shruthi is a 7th grade student. She felt that coming to in person school from distance learning was weird. She enjoyed meeting her friends in person again, though. Now, at school, she made many more wonderful friends. She expected more people to be into kpop, though.

Avantika Raavi Avantika is a 7th grade student. She liked coming to in person school since she could meet her friends again. Although, she thought distance learning was fun too, since she enjoyed learning from the comfort of her own home. Middle school is going well for her, and she's making a lot of new friends. After coming back, she now thinks its better than her expectations!

Kyle Fok

Kyle is a 8th grade student. He's confident and hopes to succeed in academics, as well as things outside of school, and in high school. Some advice he would give to incoming middle school students is to make sure to do your work.

Jayden Pham Jayden is a 8th grade student. Jayden is looking up towards high school as of right now with a lot of confidence. He feels like its going to be a lot more difficult and serious as the work loads are probably going to pile up and the difficulty of the subject and units. He feels like he's eventually going to feel overwhelmed but he knows he can do this. Overall, he has mixed feelings, but mostly good. Jayden's advice to incoming middle school students is to build good habits such as taking the time to do homework and to have a good attention span.

Anvitha Arumalla Anvitha is a 6th grader. She was excited because not only was she going back to inperson school but she was excited to meet new people. She was first scared to meet new people but got over it after coming back to school! Anvitha has made many new friends and learned about her friends in middle school. She expected middle school to be dramatic as she read in many books but as of now she's enjoying middle school.
