Cedars Hall, the Cathedral of St Andrew in Wells, Quilter Hall and our beautiful grounds at Wells Cathedral School. Wells itself - this small, vibrant city which is alive with music of all periods and all genres, and with thinking and ideas. What a wonderful environment for a wonderful, extensive programme shot through with aspirational beauty and provocation, with classics and new music. We are very fortunate! Come to as much as you can; it won’t disappoint, and you will leave having, I hope, experienced joy. This is the final season of our inaugural year of this kind of events programme. Tell us what you think, and keep returning to make sure that we’ve taken your advice. Elizabeth Cairncross, Principal Although it only opened in September 2016, Cedars Hall has already become established as a major arts venue for the South West and, along with the newly-dedicated 14th century Quilter Hall and Wells Cathedral, it is one of the host venues for our summer programme. Our third series of events continues our commitment to breaking new ground, embracing a diverse range of art forms, styles and cultures. Our concerts feature a distinguished array of world-renowned professional artists - many of whom will combine performances with teaching, masterclasses and mentoring - and our own accomplished student musicians. Mark Stringer, Director of Music

Free tickets for young people (25s and under) at some of our concerts are made possible with the support of the CAVATINA Chamber Music Trust. Please see the concert listings for eligible concerts. Young people with these tickets will be asked to complete a form on arrival at the concert. The CAVATINA Chamber Music Trust was formed in 1998 with the aim of developing young audiences for chamber music.

Film: Charlie Chaplin's The Kid

Masterpieces for String Quartet

with live music from Joanna MacGregor (piano) and Andy Sheppard (saxophones)

with the Alberni Quartet

"Joanna MacGregor is a mouldbreaking artist." - The Observer

Mozart - String Quartet in C major K465 (Dissonance); Schubert String Quartet in D minor D810 (Death and the Maiden)

Charlie Chaplin’s 1921 masterpiece melds social commentary and touching comedy as The Tramp and The Kid (Chaplin's tiny sidekick Jackie Coogan) skilfully combine slapstick and pathos. For their Cedars Hall debut, two of Britain’s finest musicians, supported by Matthew Fairclough's sound design, provide a live score to this classic film and to the lovely 1937 documentary, Children at School.

The internationally-acclaimed Alberni Quartet begins its Cedars Hall residency with two of the finest pieces ever written for string quartet. This concert kicks off a Sunday series exploring works from the heart of the repertoire for everyone who already loves this music and for those who may be coming to it for the first time. The music will be introduced by members of the quartet.

Piano Masters 4: Mitsuko Uchida

Vikki Stone

"...a lifetime unfussily shrinking the gap between the possible and the ideal" - BBC Music Magazine Mozart - Piano Sonata in C Schumann - Kreisleriana Fantasie Legendary pianist Mitsuko Uchida brings unrivalled insight to music through her lifelong quest for truth and beauty expressed in sound. Here she sets a best-loved Mozart sonata against two Schumann masterpieces: Kreisleriana, a work by turns turbulent, demonic and mischievous, and the Fantasie, an immense love song to the composer’s future wife, Clara Wieck. Concerto for Comedian and Orchestra Acclaimed as a cross between Victoria Wood and Tim Minchin, comedian, composer and former Wells Cathedral School flautist Vikki Stone presents her debut orchestral work. As the title suggests, it's a concerto in which the soloist is a comedian - a sort of Peter and the Wolf but with jokes. She says it's the first of its kind. Wells orchestral musicians have been developing the piece with her and tonight give its workshop world premiere with Vikki starring alongside conductor Ben Glassberg.

Wells Comedy Festival Complete Beethoven in association with Brothers Violin Sonatas 2/5 “The most consistently funny show of Stewart Lee's brilliant career… I laughed till it hurt.” - The Times Now in its third year, the biggest yet, Wells Comedy Festival adds Cedars Hall to its Wells venues with the Bafta-winning Stewart Lee, Mock the Week’s surreal one-liner merchant Milton Jones and Edinburgh Comedy Awardwinner Bridget Christie; plus many more shows across the city, which include Joe Lycett, Sara Pascoe and James Acaster.

with Krysia Osostowicz (violin) and Daniel Tong (piano) Krysia Osostowicz and Daniel Tong have invited ten eminent composers to write short companion pieces, responding to one of Beethoven’s violin sonatas. In this second concert of the cycle, the rollicking high spirits of Beethoven’s Violin Sonata, op.12 no.2, inspired composer Peter Ash to create A Major Chase, and Matthew Taylor’s new piece Tarantella Furiosa, which is a modern reflection on Beethoven’s fiery Kreutzer Sonata. The concert is being recorded for CD. Cedars Hall Tickets: £10 to £16 Free for 25s and under (CAVATINA Concert)

Red Sky July

Piano Masters 5: Yevgeny Sudbin

photo: Peter Regaud

Saturday, 3rd June 7.00 pm - 10.30 pm

with support from Safehaus and Ylamar

“Touching lyrics and beautiful melodies” – BBC Radio 2

“...potentially one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century” - Daily Telegraph

Red Sky July are Ally McErlaine (guitarist in Texas) and Shelly Poole (Alisha’s Attic) along with Charity Hair (The Alice Band). Red Sky July’s sound is a hazy blend of alt-country and Americana. Safehaus reached a global audience when their track Leave it All was used on a release trailer for the video game Dark Souls III and have summer gigs planned across Europe including Rome and Monaco. Ylamar are an Italian trio including beatbox.

Playing Scarlatti is a core part of every Russian pianist’s training, and Yevgeny Sudbin’s new CD of the sonatas garnered rave reviews for its intense mixture of purity and colour. His Wells recital also includes jaw-dropping virtuosity from Medtner plus quintessential Russian works by Tchaikovsky and Scriabin's Vers la Flamme. Sudbin's focused brilliance shows that fire can blaze cold as well as hot.

Haydn - String Quartet, op.76 no.2 (Fifths); Beethoven - String Quartet, op.59 no.3 (Rasumovsky) Two more great works played and introduced by Cedars Hall's quartet in residence. Haydn's op.76 quartets are among his most ambitious chamber music - at once innovative, elegant, witty and serious. The Fifths quartet, in particular, is the perfect incarnation of Haydn's famous remark about the "ingenious jesting with art”. Beethoven’s C major quartet is a life-affirming masterpiece.

Wells' young pianists are regular prize winners in national and international competitions, and the department has a particularly distinguished record in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. Tonight some of these fine young musicians take advantage of Cedars Hall's magnificent new Steinway grand piano to showcase a mixture of virtuoso and lyrical classics.

"True happiness for Russians," said novelist Dostoyevsky, "is always tinged with sadness". Mix into that Tchaikovsky's agonies, the fizz and drama of ballet - especially the famous dance which Ravel used so chillingly in his Great War-inspired showpiece - and you have a concert imbued with mists, violence and the scent of birch forests.
