The author I choose each month is one that I believe was born to shine - this month, I want to introduce you to the extraordinary, sparkling, radiating, and über creatively talented Jennifer Gordon. Jennifer offers so much to the creative world! It is all beautifully haunting. She has worn several hats from actor to magician's assistant, to author and writer, artist, dancer, and muse. As Jennifer’s Creative Collaborator, her husband Roman is her dance partner, photographer, and more.
A ghost inhabits their New England home, pacing the second floor. Her name is Esther and she designed the house. She was also a poet and photographer. Jennifer does speak with Esther. I admire her belief in ghosts. She agrees that it is hard for energy to find a different place to be.
Jennifer has been an actor in various attractions, like a haunted one. Her photos are exquisite. She is very alluring inside and out. Her words will move you.
I use the Proust interview model to learn more about authors. I ask them 10 of the 35 questions. The Proust model is a way of learning more about a person beyond the typical interview questions, and what we learn is often new, fascinating, or even something you would never think to ask. This is how we learn more about their character. Authors are even known to answer these questions about the characters they are creating for their novels.
These questions are asked of someone famous each month in the Vanity Fair Magazine and I have always gotten such a huge kick out of it. I had to do something similar so we could learn about authors in the same way.
Q: What is your idea of perfect happiness?
A: My husband and I are doing a waltz in an abandoned lunatic asylum, peeling paint on the walls, feeling the energy around us, and somehow our little dog,Tubby, is watching us and not misbehaving . LOL.
Annie responds: when I watch you both dance, I feel like I’m dancing. Your movement is so incredibly palpable because I can feel your love. I get the feeling of moving myself across the dance floor. It’s a wonderful gift Jennifer.
Q: Which living person do you most admire?
A: Keep in mind that this can change on a daily, even hourly basis. But, I would have to say, my mother (Mic Drop) she’s had a lot of trauma in her life, but she has the most incredible will to live.
Q: What has been your greatest extravagance?
A: Travel! We always allow ourselves one extravagant evening when we are on vacation. Once we were in Budapest and we went to the New York City Palace Café, which is the most beautiful café in the world. All we had was lemonade and dessert and the lemonade itself is about $30, but it was the best lemonade I ever had.
Q: On what occasion would you actually tell a lie?
A: To protect someone I loved!
Q: When and where were you happiest?
A: When I lived in the Midwest – Columbus, Ohio. I met Roman and he was into Urban Exploring. We went into a sewer drain, which was a tunnel underneath the city and it was filled with water and rats.
Q: Which talent would you like to have?
A: Singing – like fun show tunes.
Q: Who is your hero of fiction?
A: Peter Heller. He wrote “The Dog Stars”. It’s about finding hope in the relationship with his dog.
Q: What are your favorite names?
A: Alice, Agnes, Edna, and Ruth. I like weird, old-fashioned names. Oh, some male names; Andrew, James, Edgar, and Simon.
Q: What are your favorite mottos?
A: Sylvia Plath from “Lady Lazarus” ….”Out of the ash I shall rise with my red hair and I eat men like air.” Also, Anne Sexton from “Dr. Martin”….”We are magic talking to itself; noisy and alone”
Surprising fact I learned: Jennifer once owned a comic book store. She stated that “Superheroes are American Mythology”. I loved this!
