How else does everyone know what’s going on in the family unless you communicate.

Meal -time with everyone in attendance is a chance to plan or to jointly participate in creative ideas, to know who is doing what and to develop family traits and shared jokes. Sharing daily news and happenings, giving encouragement, praise and recognition fosters warmth, security and love and helps family members have a sense of belonging.

When you prepare a family meal, you have total control over what your family eats.

This means you can make it nutritious and wholesome. Take-outs usually contain high levels of sodium and saturated fats, unnecessary in freshly prepared home cooking. Kids will tend to have less of a desire for fizzy drinks when eating together at home. You can ensure the right balance of fresh vegetables and salads are available.

Besides that, home cooked food carries the energy of love, which boosts its digestive quality.

Differences in food preferences, in mood, activities and personality is highlighted when naturally, each individual is put into focus. Kids learn about themselves when family gets the opportunity to comment on idiosyncrasies and unique attributes. This generates confidence and creates a strong sense of self. Scones, cookies, desserts and cakes were all home made. An abundance of ready baked goods has almost made this redundant yet there is something so satisfying and homely about waiting for something to come out the oven. The smell of muffins wafting down the passage will automatically get everyone assembled in the kitchen. Pass down Grannies recipes, and make special dishes or foods a regular part of their lives knowing it will be a source of comfort and have positive memories for them when they are older.

Involve kids in grocery trips, planning meals, collecting recipes and preparing food. A surprising amount of people have never been exposed to cooking or learnt kitchen basics. Even if everyone works or is at school during the week, choose a weekend day to involve the family in the kitchen. This will also provide a source of pleasure and give kids something to look forward to. Tiny tots can spend hours playing with a piece of bread dough, slightly older kids love the responsibility of setting the table while a teen who has mastered their own dish gets immense satisfaction when everyone praises his or her skills.

When teenagers know they have to present themselves at the dinner table every night, they are less likely to participate in destructive behaviours like smoking, drinking alcohol and taking drugs. Research confirms this with figures that show lower rates of destructive behaviour in families that eat together five or more times a week. A sense of responsibility to ‘show up’ and present yourself in an intimate setting makes it difficult to hide potentially harmful behaviour. This also includes things like anorexia and bulimia. Parents are able to monitor behaviour through close daily interaction.

Kids that only ever eat by themselves at the television or eat junk food often don’t have the opportunity to learn meal etiquette and social skills. A disciplined setting with a structured routine goes a long way in teaching valuable people skills. Children learn by example so make sure you display the kind of manners you would like your kids to have. Correct them gently and with love.

Mealtimes can be used to introduce a wider variety of food and expand taste appreciation. Introduce a new food alongside the usual but bear in mind it may take up to ten trials before a child will accept a new food so be patient. Try out a new vegetable or fruit, a different spice or textures. You can also introduce vegetarian or raw food meals.

A family affair

This might sound strange at first, because we assume that everybody knows who they are, but is that really true? How many people, including yourself, can you describe as knowing exactly who they are and what they want their lives to be like?

I’ll let you in on a secret – it is not what your children DO that counts, it is WHO they become that matters. Anticipate leaving a period of time for adjustment, children will show you how slow or fast to go as you get to know them.

each kids good grooming and hygiene that will stay with them for life. Personal cleanliness is a habit that should be taught from an early age, it helps children to learn to take pride in their appearance, to stay healthy and look after themselves. Here are some pointers to get you started:

Flossing is difficult for younger children; you will need to help them until they can do it themselves. Get them into a habit of using floss before they brush, some dentists say flossing is even better than brushing. Take kids to the dentist regularly from early on in their lives. Make sure your dentist doesn’t use mercury fillings.

Clip away dirt:

Washing hands regularly is the best way to keep germ-free. Teach your child to wash their hands after using the bathroom, before they eat, after playing with an animal and whenever they think they may be dirty. Ideally people should wash their hands with warm water and enough soap to create lather for about 20 seconds.

Encourage your child to wash their hands for long enough by getting them to sing a ‘handwashing’ song.

Even with regular washing, germs can hide and breed under nails. Discourage nail biting and keep your child’s hand and toe nails free from dirt by clipping them regularly.

If nails are left to get too long, children may end up scratching themselves or other children and this can lead to infections.

Children should bathe at least once daily, unless they are more active or messy. Not all children enjoy getting clean, so if you struggle to get your child into the bath, make it as fun as possible. Innovative bath toys, fun wash clothes and sponges, music or even reading to them while bathing will get them more excited about bath-time.

Get your child to bath at the same time every day, so it becomes part of their daily routine. Don’t forget to clean ears, use a wash cloth for behind ears and earbuds for all the other nooks and crannies but avoid poking into the ear.

Keep teeth clean:

Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day, for three minutes at a time, and preferably after every meal. When your child is under 6 years, it is still best to help them with brushing their teeth, so you can help teach them to include all their teeth. An electric toothbrush and toothpaste they like will help encourage them to clean their teeth more effectively. If they have eaten a lot of sweets, get them to rinse out their mouths.

Washing, brushing and trimming hair is a vital part of grooming. Often children don’t enjoy having their hair washed. Incorporate hair washing during bath time and make it as enjoyable as possible. Add a good conditioner to avoid knots and use a wide tooth comb to brush through wet hair. Make sure hair is thoroughly dry before bedtime.

Keep hair length manageable with regular trims. If you are doing it yourself, invest in a good pair of scissors or take them to a salon.

Teach by example:

The simplest way to teach your child good grooming and hygiene habits is to practice them yourself.

Children naturally want to do what their parents do and will often mimic what they see. Take time to show your child what you do. Let them brush their teeth while you brush yours, show your child how you wash your hands, take your child to the salon when you get a trim. Paint little girls nails with a natural colour, make a ritual out of putting on body cream or oil and let them copy you.

At the same time, let them get dirty and play hard as this is an important part of their development.
