North Island Resource Guide 2025

How CRNs Can Help You
A Community Response Network (CRN) is made up of a diverse group of concerned community members, community agencies, local businesses, government agencies, professionals, and others who come together to create a coordinated community response to abuse, neglect, and self-neglect in vulnerable adults.
When the community cannot provide appropriate support to the adult, the Adult Guardianship Act provides designated agencies with the responsibility of investigating and ensuring that the proper action is undertaken.

CRNs around the province are reaching out to their communities to join the network and work to raise the awareness of abuse, neglect, and self-neglect in vulnerable adults, and to ultimately prevent it from happening.

Welcome to your NORTH ISLAND SENIORS RESOURCE GUIDE
Senior Support took on some significant changes in 2024.
From the earliest years of our organization, growth has been part of our mandate. In 1992 we began offering peer counselling to seniors, providing emotional support to decrease isolation and to address gaps in services to seniors in the Comox Valley.
Before long our services expanded to support seniors with transportation and housing challenges, prevention of elder abuse, and accessing information and resources. The majority of these services have been, and still are, provided by trained senior volunteers.
In 2018 the Society changed its name to Comox Valley Senior Support Society to reflect the broader range of programs and services offered and to expand our volunteer base to include volunteers of all ages.
In 2024, we grew and changed! The organization took on Better at Home Campbell River, a United Way funded program. As part of this growth, the Board of Directors has developed a new vision, mission and action plan for the expansion of services into the North Island.
To reflect the new geographic and program growth, the former Comox Valley Senior

Support also changed its name and branding, an exciting step that will help shape the development of our organization in two communities!
Our new name is Senior Support North Vancouver Island. We will continue to use “Senior Support” as our colloquial name.
While our contact phone number will remain the same, our email addresses will be new. While our old email addresses will still work until April 30, 2025, we encourage you to update your address book as soon as possible. Our website has also changed: www.ssnvi.ca is now operational.
As always, donations and grants for specific programs will continue to be directed to the program for which the funds are meant. Staff will be assigned to work in one community only, and we will ensure a continuity of services between communities.
We thank you for your generous and enduring support of the work of Senior Support in the Comox Valley and now, the North Island. We look forward to continuing existing, and building new, partnerships to meet the many challenges faced by seniors in our communities on the North Island.
And, as always, we extend the deepest gratitude to the hundreds of seniors we support each month. We value your trust and appreciate the kindness and support you extend to us (it truly does go both ways!).
Kind regards,
Christopher Bate Executive Director Senior Support North Vancouver Island
To all our Advertisers for their support in helping to provide this Directory FREE of charge to our communities.
Please patronize their businesses whenever possible and let them know you saw their ad in our Directory.

TOOLS TO ENHANCE HEALTHY COGNITIVE AGING
Keeping your brain healthy as you age helps with memory and mental sharpness; it plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of falls and maintaining overall physical well-being. Cognitive functions like balance, coordination, and quick decision-making all depend on a healthy brain, and make a significant difference in maintaining your independence and quality of life.
A key way to support brain health is through activities that challenge the mind. Reading, learning new skills, or doing puzzles engage different parts of the brain, keeping them active and resilient. Just as we exercise our bodies to stay strong, it’s important to exercise the mind to keep it flexible and sharp.
Physical activities play a crucial role in improving balance and coordination while stimulating the brain areas responsible for movement. Simple activities can enhance the brain’s ability to better adapt to the changes that come with aging.
Social engagement is another cornerstone of brain health. Joining a community or participating in group activities enriches the mind and fosters a sense of purpose. Staying connected with others can boost both cognitive and emotional health.
Prioritizing brain health doesn’t just mean enhancing memory or attention; it means investing in a future where you can maintain independence and enjoy life fully. Small, consistent steps to support both mind and body can significantly reduce fall risks and improve physical and mental resilience, making the aging journey a more active, fulfilling experience.
If you are looking for options, Broken Squirrel Wellness offers a range of programs including the Functional Movement Series with Sandy Dain (Rehab Assistant). This focuses on physical exercises in a fun, interactive group tailored for older adults Sandy also offers private sessions that are a mix of cognitive activities, balance, strength, and gait training
