Welcome to your COMOX VALLEY SENIORS RESOURCE GUIDE 2023
As we age, navigating resources and support for ourselves, and our loved ones, can be challenging. For those adjusting to reduced income or increased physical or mental health concerns, it’s particularly important to know how to find services in our community.
This was the motivation for this collaboration between Comox Valley Senior Support Society (CVSSS) and the Hornby and Denman Community Health Care Society (HDCHCS). The two organizations have many shared values, and this book was created to offer clarity and support for our ageing community. We hope this guide will provide information that will be helpful in your dayto-day life.
Getting older has benefits too! There are life experiences, knowledge, and skills that older adults can share with those who haven’t yet had lives with such varied journeys. In Canadian society, ageism can diminish elder’s value and underestimate their capacity, but they are an integral part of this country’s culture(s), encompassing the full range of diversity, knowledge and life experience of the whole community. We all need each other to live our best lives, giving and receiving support where we’re able and when it’s needed.
We also recognize that a book is not all we need when we are seeking information or assistance. It is just as important to have conversations and a personal connection to help figure out what is available and how to get support. CVSSS and HDCHCS can provide those connections and we welcome you to reach out and talk to us.
Thank you 2023 Comox Valley Seniors Resource Guide
The work done by Comox Valley Senior Support in the community could not be accomplished without relationships developed over years. Staff at CVSS often hear how important our work is, and how the support we provide impacts people’s lives.
This work is not done in isolation, and we want to pay note to those who help us do our work!
Comox Valley Senior Support shares its gratitude for the ongoing relationships we enjoy with our social sector partners. We could not do all we do without the connections we have with you.
We thank the numerous local businesses that provide support for our work. Whether it’s a slight discount, the offer of free advice, or referring elders to us, you play a vital part in our day-to-day role in the community.
Our contingent of amazing volunteers are beyond description. Supporting 300 seniors per month could not be done without the community members who provide older adults with their remarkable skills, commitment, passion, and their time.
To our community’s most fabulous residents, the hundreds of seniors we work with every year… Thank you for sharing your experiences, your joy… and your challenges and your pain… with us. Thank you for letting us assist you. Your trust is an honour and we thank you for it.
Comox Valley Senior Support staff and Board members look forward to continuing working with this incredible community!
United Way helping seniors remain independent.
Since 2014, Better at Home has assisted older adults throughout BC, providing simple, non-medical support services so that people can live independently and stay connected in their community.
From transportation to grocery shopping, meal delivery to phone check-ins, and recycling pick-up to tasks in the house, our goal is to ease the day-to-day life of elders, their families, friends and caregivers.
Huge thanks to the generous volunteers who bring their whole hearts to Better at Home. We appreciate your time, skills and compassion. We welcome people of all ages to join our wonderful volunteer team and hope to hear from you: 250-871-1165.
Thank you to our community partners, with whom we collaborate throughout the year.
Thank you to the hundreds of older adults who have entrusted us to support them over the years. Meeting you, hearing your stories and having you as Better at Home participants is what keeps us going and it is a privilege to work with you.

Better at Home is funded by the Government of British Columbia through the United Way. Additional funding comes from Comox Valley Community Foundation, Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation and The Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.

MAYORS’ MESSAGE
The Town of Comox is a place to call home for over 7000 seniors who are part of our vibrant community. On behalf of Comox, we are grateful to have organizations like Comox Valley Senior Support Society, Better at Home, d’Esterre Seniors’ Centre and our own Community Recreation Centre that provide connection and access to vital services. It’s great to have this Resource Guide to share within our community and support residents locally and across the region.
~ Mayor Nicole Minions, Comox
A huge thank you to The Comox Valley Senior Support Society and Hornby and Denman Community Health Care Society for their hard work in creating this community guide. The health and wellbeing of our senior community members are clearly at the forefront of the creation of each and every one of the programs offered this year. This level of caring support is so important. May the year 2023 bring us all the best of health.
~ Mayor Bob Wells, Courtenay
I know how important the vital organizations included in this guide are to our seniors, providing services and supports to ensure that elders in our communities have healthy options for social, health and economic security. Seniors are a gift to any community; they hold history, volunteer for all the great events, and share the amazing talents and skills they’ve developed over their years. And in Cumberland - a young village full of kids and babies - they provide a balance to youthful energy and bring wisdom to the community. Thank you to all the organizations that provide much needed services and supports to Seniors in the Comox Valley to ensure they can enjoy their senior years.
~ Mayor Vickey Brown, Cumberland

How CRNs Can Help You
A Community Response Network (CRN) is made up of a diverse group of concerned community members, community agencies, local businesses, government agencies, professionals, and others who come together to create a coordinated community response to abuse, neglect, and self-neglect in vulnerable adults.
When the community cannot provide appropriate support to the adult, the Adult Guardianship Act provides designated agencies with the responsibility of investigating and ensuring that the proper action is undertaken.
CRNs around the province are reaching out to their communities to join the network and work to raise the awareness of abuse, neglect, and self-neglect in vulnerable adults, and to ultimately prevent it from happening.

Menopause occurs when a woman’s ovaries stop producing hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. Low levels of estrogen and progesterone can negatively impact a woman’s quality of life and ability to have a loving and intimate relationship. Loss of estrogen results in vaginal dryness, laxity, burning, pain during intercourse, and mild urinary incontinence.
Bascom Medical Therapy is excited to offer the MonaLisa Touch laser therapy, designed to treat these symptoms, known collectively as Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM). The laser targets the atrophic vaginal mucosa and stimulates a metabolic reaction and neocollagenesis, resulting in enhanced vascularization, elastin, and collagen deposition.
The MonaLisa Touch laser therapy is a 5-minute procedure performed in the office. Generally, it requires no recovery time to return to regular activity. Three treatments, spaced at 4 to 6-week intervals, are recommended. Many patients experience relief after just one treatment.
