WELCOME FROM GM DAVID DOME Nau mai, haere mai and welcome to Central Coast Stadium in Gosford for the women’s second ‘home’ game of the 2021/22 Liberty A-League season.

Tonight we play host to the Newcastle Jets, who beat us 5-1 in Newcastle in round two.

Gemma Lewis and her team learnt a lot from that match and I’m expecting a much closer contest today.

The women have now been based in Wollongong for the best part of two months and most of the players have just spent their first Christmas away from family and friends. It’s been an enormous challenge but Gemma and her team have got on with the job without any complaints.

Thankfully they are receiving some great support from the local community. Fraternity Club have come on board as a corporate partner and are looking after the players’ pre and post-match meals, while BaiMed have been providing all of their physiotherapy needs.

We are also delighted to welcome SHOTT Beverages as the women’s front-of-short sponsor. Eagle-eyed observers would have noticed their logo on the players shorts last week.

It’s great to have another Wellington business step up to support the team.

It follows New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport (NZCIS) and Comrad Medical Systems signing on as the front-of-shirt and sleeve sponsors respectively on the eve of their historic first season.

Malcolm Gillies, Kevin Melville and NZCIS are great supporters of the Wellington Phoenix and they answered the call when we needed them the most.

We are also very appreciative of Glenn Stewart and Catherine Savage from Comrad Medical Systems for stepping up.

A big thanks also goes out to our men’s partners. Oppo and Spark have come on board as the men’s front-of-jersey sponsors this season, joining our family of commercial supporters.

PHOENIX “EXCITED” TO GET ANOTHER CRACK AT THE JETS The Wellington Phoenix are welcoming another opportunity to play the Newcastle Jets in the Liberty A-League women’s competition.

The Phoenix are meeting the Jets at Central Coast Stadium, 17 days after crashing to a 5-1 defeat in their second round meeting in Newcastle.

Wellington vice-captain Kate Taylor says the team is happy it has a chance to make amends for that performance so quickly.

“I think it’s exciting to us. Obviously we have a bit more of a point to prove than they do,” Taylor said.

“We’re excited to play them again, show them what we can actually do.

We can definitely improve on the ball, but I think off the ball we need to be closer [to them] and I think we will do that.”

Taylor has been thrust into the leadership position, despite being one of eight 18-year-olds in the Phoenix squad.

“At this stage I haven’t done too much. We’ve definitely been focusing on the first few games, which has been hard in itself.

“Hopefully it’s a fun role that I can enjoy. I know sometimes these roles bring a bit more added stress so I want to try and relieve that in other ways.

“I’m really looking forward to what it brings and how I can help Lily… and how I can help the coaches.”

Kate Taylor has only been taking her football seriously for the last handful of years after also playing futsal and touch rugby and competing in athletics and cross-country growing up in Christchurch.

An under-14 national tournament was a turning point.

“Up until then I never thought that football was my main sport. I always just wanted to get hold of any sport I could.

“It was probably only at that point that I started to think that you could go further than New Zealand and you can earn money playing a sport.”

Taylor then moved into the Canterbury United Pride youth programme, before graduating to the first team which won a third straight national championship in 2020.

This year she juggled being part of the Future Ferns Domestic Programme (FFDP) in Auckland, with school in Christchurch.

Joining the FFDP put her in constant contact with Phoenix head coach Gemma Lewis and her assistant Natalie Lawrence.

Taylor has started at centre back for the club’s first three A-League women’s matches and wants to produce a consistent season for the Phoenix.

“I was able to go up for FFDP and that pre-Olympic camp and that

She hopes that will help push her case for international honours.

“It’s something that I’ve dreamed of and wanted to be a part of since I was young.

“I’m really pushing for that now. I’d love the opportunity to go on a tour or go to a World Cup or Olympics with the Ferns, but also at under-20 level.”

The 2022 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Costa Rica is first on the horizon.

“Gemma and Nat are excited for that and I know a lot of the girls here will hopefully be involved as well.

“That’s something that I’m looking forward to next and hopefully the Ferns will come too.”
