PARENTS’ NEWS
PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
At the Parents’ Association annual general meeting on 4th March 1982, Bruce Jenkin became the new president of the association with Jim Larsen as vice-president. Jacqui Taylor and George Spiers continued during the year to give invaluable service as secretary and treasurer respectively.
Other members of a large and active committee were: Eileen Allan (who was elected as junior vice- president during the year), Graham Booth, Tony Arthur, Jenny Bowles, Gerry Bridge, Alan Bulleyment, Jill Goddard, Kate Harcourt, Barry Kerr, Edith Oliver, Bob Purvis, Barbara Scelly, Maureen Scott, Nelly Serpi, Pat Simes, Thelma Sobiecki, Lorna Stevenson, David Swallow, Don Thompson, David Tuckett, Judy Turner, David Yeoman, Tony Watmough, and Tong Young.
Most of the committee’s activities are aimed to raise funds to provide facilities for the school which cannot be obtained from Education Department funds.
The first of these projects during 1982 was on March 14th when the committee undertook the catering for the National Motocross Championships at Paraparaumu. In the expectation of a large attendance the efficient parents’ association machine swung into action. Water was piped for miles across the sand-dunes, generators throbbed among the tussock and a forest of marquees sprang up by the entrance. What seemed to be several tons of sausages, bread and drink-cans were available and the aroma of grilling sausage competed successfully with the fumes of two-stroke exhausts.
Unfortunately, the weather was not ideal and the crowd was much smaller than expected so that the eventual sales were disappointing and the final profit for the Association very modest. However, all those who helped got a lot of fresh air, plenty of flying sand in the hair and a free view of the motorbikes racing through ever-deepening dust.
Luckily, the association nevertheless had sufficient funds to contribute to several projects during the year. The most substantial of these was the repair and re-furbishing of the pavilion, supervised by a works sub-committe of Alan Bulleyment and Graham Booth. $600 was contributed towards the adaptation of the Old Firth House dining hall for school use, and contributions were also made towards the purchase of computers for use of the pupils.
During June and July the association ran a raffle with a motorbike as first prize, and a video cassette, sewing machine and bicycle as the main secondary prizes. Mrs Serpi organised this and the raffle was a success once the third and fourth formers had made a last minute sales drive around town. The overall profit was in excess of $7,000 which provided yet more funds to upgrade school facilities. It was also pleasing that a boy at the college won the first prize.
As a less mercenary contribution to the good of the school, the association together with the Headmaster and careers staff, again ran a careers evening with Graham Booth as the main organiser. This took the form of speakers from many professions and trades addressing 20 minute seminars on career paths and prospects in their own special areas. About 40 speakers were involved and the association is very grateful to all those who gave up their time for this valuable and interesting evening. Judging by the number of boys attending this evening is highly valued by them.
Fund-raising for library books is one of the association’s regular activities, usually carried out in conjunction with parent-teacher interviews for each form. Parents can donate a book to the library for half the cost price — and inscribe their names in it — and the association will pay the other half of the cost. New books are always needed for the library, and losses for various reasons also need replacement.
A music hall evening was arranged in the school hall on 25th September which was a social occasion with parents and friends joining in the singing and being entertained by a small cast of singers.
The association has, of course, been keenly interested and involved all year in the progress of the gymnasium/ arts centre project and helped to finance the fund-raising feasibility study. The committee was delighted to learn of the very promising start to the raising of funds with the extremely generous contributions of Mr Renouf and Mr Brierley. These give a great initial impetus to the scheme and have encouraged the committee to look forward with optimism to their own fund-raising efforts next year.
The first of these activities for the committee in 1983 will be the second biennial school fair, which is scheduled for Saturday, 26th March. Preliminary planning for this has begun and a significant effort from all concerned is envisaged to raise a sizeable sum for the association’s funds. Contributions from parents and friends of the school will be sought for all the stalls and, in particular, items will be needed for an auction which should provide one of the highlights of the day. Please put aside any white elephants you have which might sell, and note the date as soon as you are given next year’s diary for Christmas.

President: Colleen Croxford; Vice President: Leslie Strahan; Secretary: Frances Williamson; Treasurer: Jenny Ward.
Members: Judy Ansell, Valerie Bermel, Bernadette Bishop, Barbara Brown, Denny Davidson, Margaret Dukes, Mary Egley, Marjorie Field, Joy Gray, Helen Griffiths, Islay Hall, June Hagan, Mary Heald, Fiona Heron, Elizabeth Hinkley, Kay James, Jan Johnson, Gail Martin, Valerie Martin, Hazel Meek, Lindy Pillar, Audrey Roche, Averil Wootton.
Aims: To assist the Parents Association in expanding its activities by: (a) Promoting a close relationship between staff, pupil and parent; (b) Providing opportunities for mothers to meet and work for the welfare of the College.
We have had a very successful year, principally due to the commitment of a hard-working committee.
We have been fortunate indeed to have staff members continue to address us at our two-monthly meetings.
It is through these meetings we are able to maintain a very close relationship with the college, and I am pleased we have been able to have staff members continuing to share their knowledge with us.
The year commenced with the Annual General Meeting in February. Mr Rees-Thomas spoke on several topics of interest to all: — The college roll, class organisation, curriculum, academic standards and fund-raising, in particular the new Sports-Arts Centre.
In April our guest speaker was Mr J. Cormack, Head of the Mathematics Department.
Mr W. Haskell and Mr H. Buchanan, two of the teachers involved with sport at the college, spoke at the June meeting. We took this opportunity to give $400 toward sporting requirements.
A meeting with a difference was held in August — a Glee and Grouch afternoon.
Mr P. Markham, head of the Art Department, addressed the October meeting and had prepared a comprehensive display of art work done at the college.
In November we held our Christmas luncheon and, as always, it was most enjoyable. Fund Raising: Our fund raising effort was a Casino evening in July. This was a most successful and enjoyable evening.
Our thanks again to all who sponsored prizes. The profit from this evening (almost $1200) has been banked in a separate account which we intend to be spent repairing the outdoor clock on the Firth Dining Hall. This is a project which will continue into 1983.
Sports Afternoons: The effort made to involve mothers of boys in sports teams has illustrated the success which can be achieved by mothers in providing refreshments for visiting sports teams. Our thanks to Mrs J. Gray, convenor of sports programmes, for hosting teams.
Clothing Sales: Clothing sales have been more successful with the regular fortnightly sales. Our grateful thanks to Mrs K. James, clothing convenor, and Mrs L. Pillar, responsible for the book records.
Our grateful thanks to Mrs N. Gage and Mrs D. Cooper, college office staff, who are always so willing to assist us.
We extend a warm welcome to all mothers of Wellington College boys in 1983 to attend our meetings.

Friendly Cup Cricket Match: The 50th match between W.C.O.B. and St Pat’s Old Boys was played on Sunday, 21st March, at Wellington College, on a near perfect day. Result: a draw. To celebrate the occasion, a function was held after the match, in the Old Boys Rugby Club rooms. Some seventy players, former players and wives, enjoyed this most “friendly” evening, including an excellent buffet style meal.
Mr Rees-Thomas welcomed the guests to the college, followed by an entertaining speech from Mr Tom Burke, President of the St Pat’s Old Boys Association, and recollections from Mr Bart Cahill of St Pat’s Old Boys who was part initiator of the event fifty years ago and played in the first match and most since. Father Leo Evatt, who also played in the first match and has been closely associated with many games since, said grace before the meal. Fittingly, Mr Alf Amies and Mr Bernie Lynch, organisers of the match for their respective sides for some years now, stood down after arranging for Mr Alastair Wright, WCOB and Mr Norm Hastings, SPOB, to carry on their good work. A vote of thanks was passed to Alf and Bernie for their contributions. We look forward to many more matches.
Presentation of First XV caps: The annual presentation of caps to the First XV was made at assembly on Friday, 13th August. This year’s presentation was made by Jamie Salmon who, besides being an All Black in 1981 and a member of the Wellington Provincial side for several years, is an Old Wellingtonian ...usual abbreviation O.W.... an Old Boy of Wellington College in England. The Salmons currently hold the honour of the most successive generations attending their college. Their college too has a strong rugby playing tradition, and Salmon himself was coached at college by Bev. Risman, former Lions International, whose son attends also.
The presentation assembly was followed by a formal morning tea attended by members of the staff, Old Boys association, members of the board, members of the parents association and guests of honour — Mr Ron Brierley and Mr Jamie Salmon.
School Leavers Assembly: This assembly was held on Thursday, 28th October, and representatives of Old Boys groups in attendance were: Malcolm Perrett, association, Bruce Waddel, association and rugby club, Alf Amies, association, rugby club and squash club, Keith Binnie, hockey club, Dave Grey, Chris Taylor, Matthew Roche, cricket club. We received a very good reception from those leaving, and are pleased to note that Old Boys’ clubs are being well supported by college leavers. To those leaving, we say again that Old Boys’ clubs welcome your support, whether as a player or as a member/supporter. It is not an exercise in nostalgic sentimentality to join an Old Boys club, but a positive step in joining a club welladministered, looking for a high level of success in its sport at playing level and enjoyment at social level. It is a step we know you will be pleased you took in years to come.
After this assembly we were contacted by Parvinder Singh who is setting up a couple of teams of basketball players to play as Old Boys teams ... firstly in the Wellington Summer League and then the Winter League. At the time of writing his contact phone number is 856-129 and address Flat 2/16 Austin Street, Mt Victoria. Contact him if you are interested.
Lou Smith, 100 this year. On 20th September, L.C. Smith turned one hundred years old. Lou was very well known as a prolific writer of controversial and wellinformed letters to the “Evening Post” for many years and in fact only stopped writing some 5-6 years ago. He attended college in the mid-1890’s, at the same time as General Freyberg. In honour of the occasion, Malcolm Perrett and Alf Amies of the Association (Rugby Club too) and Richard Boon, this year’s Head Prefect, visited Lou at Ewart Hospital where he resides. We found him to be in very good shape ... a little immobile, but seeing and hearing well and sharp in the mind. Two other Old Boys’ were visiting at the time ... Ian Cook from the 1920’s and Ken Poulton also from the 1920’s and former Editor of the “Evening Post.” Lou was presented with Life Membership of the Association and the Rugby Club, which he has belonged to for many years. He recounted many memories of his college days and the conditions and development that were taking place at that time. Mr Firth was the Head during Lou’s college days. Well done Lou!!
Old Boys’ Dinner: This year’s dinner was held on Friday, 12th November, at the Burgundy Lounge, 96 Courtenay Place. 53 attended. It was decided to open the function to Old Boys of all ages. In recent years the dinner has been for older Old Boys only. The move was made as a result of suggestions from both the older Old Boys and the younger groups. It proved to be a good one. Unfortunately, our guest speaker, Frank Renouf, who is himself a well-known Old Boy, was indisposed at the last minute and unable to attend. In the short time available we were unable to arrange a replacement speaker, but in the event, those attending had a greater opportunity to talk amongst themselves and had a most enjoyable night. Brian Cardiff proposed the Toast to the School, and Mr Rees-Thomas replied.
Mr Dighton “Inky” Passes On. On Saturday, 13th November, one of our very highly regarded old masters,
Mr John Lyell Dighton, passed way. He was aged 87. “Inky” as he was known to all generations of Wellington College pupils who passed through the college during his time there, was one of those identities whose personality, character and contribution became absolutely intertwined with the tradition and heritage of a college such as ours. Some of our strongest memories will be of his activities with the college cadets, the Life-Saving classes which he ran for countless years, the swimming sports and many other Handicapped facets of college life. His cheerful disposition was never better realised than during a chance meeting from time to time in Wellington when his face would light up to greet Old Boys and chat with them. We do indeed cherish the memory of Mr Dighton.
Golf Tournament: Our November tournament has been postponed until early 1983 because so many of our supporters had pre-Christmas work commitments and were unable to be available.
Waikanae Branch Dinner: The annual dinner was held on Friday, 26th November, at the Waikanae Club. Attendance at around 60 was most satisfactory. Guest speaker, Colin Gray, gave a very interesting address on his experiences as a fighter pilot in World War 2, covering the topic in a very wide sense. The brief AGM always held in conjunction with the dinner, resulted in the re-election of officers — Chair/President Tom McPhee, Secretary Bert Gyles, Treasurer Dave Gregg.
Auckland, Hawkes Bay and Christchurch branches:
All report successful dinners and well sup- ported activities.
Centennial Trust: The money realised from the sale of the Centennial Trust’s block of flats in Ellice Street has now been invested in two first mortgage investments, a teacher occupier flat in Hataitai and the balance in a secured interest bearing investment. The Centennial Trust will be a significant contributor to the Sports/Arts Centre appeal.

W.C.O.B ASSOCIATION BRANCHES
The following is a list of branches of the W.C.O.B. Association. Any college leaver who wishes to join the Old Boys Association should contact one or other of the officers shown for each branch. You will be assured of a good welcome. Most branches have a social programme enabling Old Boys to meet once or twice a year and maintain contact with the Wellington branch to keep informed about special events, occasions and points of interest. If there is no branch near your residential locality, you may wish to join the Wellington branch. If you do not join at the point of leaving college, you may of course join later, years later if you wish. In this case the easiest way to make a contact if your local branch officers have changed would be through the Wellington branch — Box 3565, Wellington. Leavers who completed forms expressing interest in joining at the leavers assembly will be contacted on leaving college.
