Contact the community Sportsplex before registration day to get your family set up on our registration program, 519-843-2800. This will speed up the process on the first day. It will also enable you to register using programable on the internet. * The recommended Browser is Internet Explorer to register online.

From the website, you can then register for any activity. It’s easy, simply; 1. Search the current activities.

REGISTRATION POLICIES Completing your registration Form: Please complete the form in its entirety. If your program identifies other days or times that may be alternatives for you, enter them as your second choices. This will avoid delays in processing if your first choice is full. All registrations will be processed on a first come first serve basis. Registration that are dropped off in person, emailed or faxed before registration starts will be processed at the end of the first day of registration.

Program Cancellations: Register early to avoid disappointment. Delayed registration may result in program cancellation.

If your class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, you may transfer to another program, subject to availability, or receive a full refund.

Payment fees: We accept cheques, money orders, cash, debit, Visa or Master Card. We have calculated the HST and included it in our fees where applicable. There is a $45.00 fee for NSF cheques. Please note: Registrations and bookings will not be accepted on those accounts that have an outstanding balance. No post dated cheques are accepted.

2. Request for refunds must be received 5 business days prior to program start date. A minimum $20.00 or 15% administrative fee is deducted from the refund.

POOL INFORMATION NEW FOR SPRING

DID YOU KNOW...?

Diapers As a courtesy to all we request and require that all children who are not toilet trained wear specially designed swimming diapers. The Aquatic Centre has both disposable and reusable swim diapers available at our administration desk. The Sportsplex stocks swim diapers in infant, child, youth, and adult sizes.

Feeding your children before swimming: Children may experience nausea while swimming after eating a large meal. Please give your child ample time to digest their food before swimming. Please do not feed your child a large meal just prior to swimming.

Financial Assistance for Swimming Lessons: For families looking for additional support, there is funding available through the Canadian Tire Jump Start Program. This excellent program offers funding for swimming lessons and minor sports activities.

Free Public Swimming NEWDON INDUSTRIES LTD PUBLIC SWIM will provide free admission to the first 40 children and youth entering the 2:00 pm to 3:55pm public swim on the first Saturday of each month.

Pool Temperatures We have 3 different pools on our deck. They are Maintained at the following temperatures.

Main – 28 Celsius (82 Fahrenheit) Leisure – 33.5 Celsius (92 Fahrenheit) Whirl Pool – 38 Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) Private Rentals A private pool rental is a great way to celebrate a birthday, or host a special event. Rental times are available Saturday and Sundays between 4:00pm5:00pm. Call the Supervisor of Aquatic Services (519843-2800) for more information.

Spectators Spectators are welcome to watch from the spectator gallery. Viewing lessons from the pool deck is not permitted.

Strollers Due to their size, and the possibility of restricting change room exits, unattended strollers are to be left in the area by the pool office. We apologize for the inconvenience, however we need to ensure all exits are maintained free of obstructions in case an evacuation is required.

Swimming Lesson information: Cancelled Classes Classes with low enrolment will be cancelled approximately 1 week before programs start. Register early to avoid disappointment.

Deck Supervisor During swimming lessons there is a deck supervisor that oversees all the lessons. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress they are available to answer your questions.

Family Lessons We offer an alternative format of swimming lessons on Monday and Friday evenings called “Family Lessons”.

You can coordinate all your children’s lessons’ to take place at the same time.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to coordinate this, instructors will teach multi level classes.

Lessons will be 45 minutes in length to provide additional practice time for swimmers.

Missed Classes If you miss a scheduled lesson we are unable to make them up.

Private Lessons Private lessons run in the same 9 lesson format as all other lessons. If this doesn’t fit your schedule, we do offer “one time” private lessons. When registering online for Semi private lessons you can register 1 child online which will reserve the lesson for you. You need to contact the Sportsplex to register the 2nd child.

Swim Lesson Progressions Did you know your child may repeat a level 3 or 4 times before completing all of the requirements successfully?

When registering your children please ensure you register them in the correct level. Swimming skills build from one level to the next. If your child hasn’t completed a level, they will not have the skills they need for the next level.

Transfers You can switch classes prior to the start of the third lesson if there is space available.

We’ve made some changes for the Spring session.

Please look through the aquatic section for more details.

Swimming lessons: • Red Cross – The Canadian Red Cross has made some significant changes to the Pre-School swim program.

We have instituted these changes in the Winter session. “Sea Turtle” is now a parent and tot level for swimmers that have reached the age of 2. The “Turtle” program has been replaced by “Otter”. This is still a transitional level that parents start with their children and gradually participate less time in the class each week. The traditional “Sea Turtle” program has been replaced by “Sea Otter”. Participants can start “Sea Otter” once they are 3 years of age. Please see our lesson outline for more information.

• Children can now enter the “School aged” swimming lessons at the age of 5. We recommend that swimmers who are progressing through the preschool program remain enrolled in those levels until they turn 6.

Swim Changes: • We have a new Annual Family Swim pass. This is valid for all swims (lane, public, family, adult leisure, special needs, parent & tot). The cost is $365 / year.

• During Friday evening public swims the slide will be open from 6:30-7:30.

• We have added a Parent and tot & Special needs swim on Mondays and Fridays from 12:00-1:00pm.

• Noon hour lane swims will run from 11:45-12:55.

• Swim admission prices will see a slight increase April 1st Summer Swimming Lesson Sessions: This summer we will be altering our swimming lesson sessions. We have added a twice a week lesson format.

Our session dates for the summer are as follows: Daily lessons: (every day for 2 weeks between 9:00-11:45am): Session 1 July 2-13, Session 2 July 16th-26, Session 3 July 30-August 10, Session 4 August 13-23.

Twice a week lessons: (Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00-6:00): July 3-31, and August 2-30 Once a week lessons: Mondays 4:00-8:00pm, June 25th – August 29 Tuesdays 8:00-8:45am, July 3 – August 28th, Wednesdays 4:00-8:00pm July 4th – August 29th.

POOL INFORMATION SWIMMING ADMITTANCE & SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS

In order to ensure adequate supervision and to identify children at greater risk, the Township of Centre Wellington is now issuing wristbands during public and family swim sessions.

All children require a wristband to access public and family swims. Ask facility staff for more information.

Adult : Child Ratio: N/A Band Colour: GREEN Each ratio indicates the maximum number of children that one responsible person (aged 12 or older) is able to supervise. Parent/guardian must be in proper bathing attire, in the water, actively participating within arms reach at all times.

High-Risk Participants High-risk participants must be in a ratio of 1:1.

High-risk participants are defined as those who have a condition or illness that may put them at risk in an aquatic environment (e.g. frequent seizures, fainting conditions, etc) and those who are unable to control behaviour or impulses and require direct supervision.

Children under the age of 10 years may not be admitted to the swimming pool unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian who is at least 12 years of age and are responsible for their direct supervision with a maximum of 2 children for each parent or guardian.

The ratio of non-swimmer to parents or guardian may be increased for children aged 6-9 to a maximum of four bathers to one parent or guardian if life jackets are worn by all non-swimmers in their charge.

Children between the ages of 6 & 9 who are swimmers (pass the facility swim test) may be admitted to the swimming pool unaccompanied. Parents/guardian must be present for the swim test, and remain in the facility for the duration of the swim.

SWIM TEST CRITERIA Front swim 6 meters, tread water 20 seconds, front swim 12 meters, tread water 20 seconds, front swim 6 meters. Must make an attempt at over arm recovery with a near horizontal body position. Lifeguards reserve the right to have any swimmer complete the swim test to determine competency to use the deep area of the pool Whirlpool: due to the high temperature, the whirlpool is for use by patrons 16 years of age and older.

SWIM TEST CARDS Patrons that have successfully completed the swim test will receive a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Swim Test Cardâ&#x20AC;?. Upon future visits to the facility children can present the swim test card to reception staff when paying for the swims and will receive the appropriate colour wristband. A parent / caregiver must be in the facility during the swim. If you forget your swim test card you will be required to complete the swim test again. If at any time a patron with a swim test card is unable to complete the swim test their swim test card will be revoked.

Caregivers volunteering their time to help a person with special needs is admitted free (1 caregiver per person). Adults, seniors, and children are welcome.

AQUAFIT DESCRIPTIONS General Aquafit Use the resistance of water to assist in a quality low impact workout. The option of deep water aquafit will be made available to those interested in it.

Deep Water Aquafit Enjoy the benefits of an aquafit workout with no impact on joints. Flotation belts are provided, comfort in deep water is required.

Rehabilitation Aquafit These classes, taught in our warm leisure pool can assist with recovery, increase flexibility and range of motion much faster and with less stress on the body than a typical post rehabilitation exercise class.

Arthritis Aquafit This class is specifically designed for those dealing with Arthritis. These classes are taught in our warm leisure pool. Exercising in warm water can maintain and improve your mobility through range of motion exercises.

PRE-REGISTERED AQUAFIT - SPRING 2012 Pre registered Aquafit programs allow our instructors to build more personalized programs.

Swimmers will complete a 5 metre distance swim, increase the distance of their front and back glides with kick and complete unassisted roll-over glide, side glide and front swim. Swimmers will learn to support themselves at the surface for 5 seconds.

Safety skills are focused on good judgement in, on and around the water and include deep-water skills and use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

Swimmers build deep water confidence through stride dives and a minute of treading water. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.

This level is an introduction to breast stroke and feetfirst surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes.

Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.

RED CROSS SWIM KIDS $ 64.00 LEVEL 2 Swimmers focus on building on skills learned in Swim Kids 1, including rhythmic breathing, front and back floats, front, back and side glides with kick and rollover glides. This level refines front crawl as swimmers swim 25 metres with a focus on hand entry and breathing.

Swimmers perform 25 metres of back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll. The level introduces elementary backstroke, safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.

This level refines the front and back crawls as swimmers perform 100 metres of each. Elementary back stroke and breast stroke are refined. Swimmers are challenged to travel using just their legs for support for 3 minutes. They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and selfrescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance. Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the vertical dolphin kick and a 500 metre swim.

TRAINING SWIM - $38.50 (10 weeks) This program is geared towards adult swimmers whose skills range from beginner fitness to serious tri athlete.

Three lanes of training are provided: beginner, intermediate and intense. Aquatic staff will provide you with a swim workout each week and help you build your fitness level.

INTRODUCTORY LIFESAVING COURSES The Canadian Swim Patrol program provides enriched training for kids who are ready to go beyond learn-toswim. The Swim Patrol program is an official training program of the Lifesaving Society – Canada’s Lifeguarding experts. Swim Patrol classes are running on Wednesday evenings from 4:00-5:00pm. April 18th – June 13th . They can be taken while completing the Red Cross Swim Kids levels.

ROOKIE PATROL - $78.00 Pre-requisite: Recommend completion of Swim Kids 7 Rookie Patrol features timed 100m swims, 350m workouts and swims with clothes. A work-hard play-hard approach develops swimming strength and efficiency with emphasis on personal responsibility for Water Smart behavior.

RANGER PATROL- $78.00 Ranger Patrol features a timed 200m swim, 100m fitness medley and support/carrying a 5 lb weight.

Content is challenging but achievable with effort. Skill drills enhance capability in the water including a noncontact rescue STAR PATROL - $78.00 Star Patrol demands good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment. Content features 300m swims, 600m workouts; swim with clothes; defense methods; support and carry 10lb weight. Scene assessment and a towing rescue are introduced. Star Patrol is excellent preparation for the Bronze Star Award.

Body Blast: A total body cardio and conditioning class.

Spin: This energizing group cycling class will challenge your cardiovascular system, improve your stamina and increase the strength in your lower body. You’ll cover all types of terrain in this class.

Step: Cardiovascular work involving a variety of high and low impact step combos followed by strength & core work. End with stretch & relaxation.

VPSC ADVISORY BOARD The Centre is run by a volunteer Advisory Board of seven elected Centre members and one appointed Council Representative. The Advisory Board acts a liaison between the seniors and the Township of Centre Wellington and works with the Parks and Recreation Dept. to provide quality recreational opportunities for older adults. Meetings are held the first Monday of the month at 9:00 am. All members welcome.

VPSC PROGRAM COMMITTEE Interested in providing your input into programs and events for older adults? This volunteer committee organizes special events and fundraisers for the Centre.

We meet the first Monday of the month at 10:15 am.

SENIOR GAMES - DISTRICT 26 HELD IN ELMIRA June 4 to 12, 2012 Join in the annual Waterloo-Wellington District 26 Summer Senior Games hosted this year by Elmira.

Friendly competition for those 55+. Participants from the seven surrounding communities: Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, Wilmot, Woolwich & Centre Wellington compete in a wide variety of competitive opportunities. • Pickleball Pickleball is a combination of tennis, ping pong and badminton played on a badminton court with a three foot high net, lightweight paddles and a plastic perforated ball. Volunteer Opportunities Interested in volunteering at Victoria Park Seniors Centre? You don’t have to be a member to volunteer. There are a number of volunteer positions available: kitchen help, registration desk, foot clinics, special events, food preparation, activity leaders (Wii Bowling volunteer needed!) committee work. Share your expertise. We are always looking for innovative programming ideas and the instructors to lead them. Do you enjoy cooking for a big group (40-60 people)? Grocery Tapes Fundraiser Support the Centre by saving your grocery receipts when shopping at any Zehrs or L&M. We are collecting these grocery receipts to help support our programs!

Simply drop off your receipts to the Centre. For every $450 dollars worth of tapes, we receive $1.00. It doesn’t sound like much but it adds up!

SUPPORT SERVICES & TRANSPORTATION Seniors Transit Bus A bus runs on Tuesdays in the Elora/Salem area and on Wednesdays in the Fergus area for seniors. $1.50 one-way ($3 round trip). The bus picks you up at home, drops you off at your destination and brings you back home. To use this service, you must contact the bus driver ahead of time. BUS TRIPS We are always in the process of organizing new bus trips for Victoria Park Seniors Centre. Some trips may not be listed if arranged after this publication went to print. Chair Yoga Chair Yoga gives all the same benefits of other kinds of yoga without having to come to the floor to do the postures. Fri. March 9 @ 10:00 am Wednesday Homemade Lunches Join us for a delicious homemade fundraising lunch organized and prepared by the Centre’s Program Committee. Includes a main course, vegetable, roll, salad/ juice, dessert, tea/coffee. Lunch begins at 12:00 pm.

Cost is $8 members or $9 non-members. Stay for a social afternoon of euchre, bridge, crafts, chess (no charge for these activities if you come for lunch), woodcarving or billiards (drop-in fee applies).
