The autumn foliage can be beautiful to admire. However, once the trees are past their peak and begin to drop their leaves, autumn can mean lots of yard work for homeowners.

A mature tree can have more than 200,000 leaves, most of which will fall to the ground when the cooler weather arrives. Multiply that amount by the number of trees on the property, and one can see what a task removing leaves can be.

Depending on the size of a person's property, leaf removal can be an all-day project.

However, when done right, one

ensures the lawn underneath the leaves continues to thrive and will be in a better position to ride out the winter.

For most, a human-powered rake is the best tool for removing leaves. While blowers might seem quicker, they can simply disperse the leaves instead of congregate them for easier disposal. What's more, blowers can be noisy and distribute fuel emissions into the air.

It is important to rake deep enough to disturb the thatch or dried up grass and other debris that can form in the lawn. This helps prevent the lawn from

suffocation or discoloration.

Leaves can be gathered and packed into biodegradeable bags and brought to the local recycling center. They also can be broken down and used in compost. Leaves on their own do not make ideal organic material, so it's best if they're mixed into a compost pile to generate that "black gold" plants love.

If there are not many leaves on the property, a lawnmower can be pushed over the leaves to break them up into food for the lawn. However, large quantities of leaves should be raked and removed.

Don’t let the home fires burn A fire at home can occur in just about any room of the house and even outdoors.

While one can't account for natural disasters or other unforseen problems, there are many steps homeowners can take to prevent fires. * Check the cords on all appliances and electronics.

Replace any frayed or damaged cords or wires. * Do not overload outlets or rely heavily on multi-plug power strips. * Keep cords out of the reach of children and pets. * When cooking in the kitchen, always be present

while food is on the stove or in the oven. Flare-ups can occur at a moment's notice. * Don't store items over the stove. They can fall and ignite. * Turn pot handles so that children can't reach them and pull them over, risking burns. * Be sure appliance vents have room to "breathe." * Have the chimney checked and cleaned regularly. * Use a metal or glass fireplace screen to block embers. * Limit the use of portable space heaters around the home. * Use extreme caution with cigarettes and ashtrays. Empty them frequently when signs of

heat and burning are gone. * Use light bulbs that are at the recommended wattage for a fixture. * Don't place any electrical items by water in the bathroom. * Store flammable materials in a locked metal container in the basement or garage. * Service the furnace and hot water heater on a regular basis. * Do not store items too close to the furnace. * Keep one or two fire extinguishers charged and at the ready.

The time when a homeowner closes up the pool is largely a personal choice. However, it's best to do it before the temperatures start dipping below 40 to avoid the possibility of freezing and damage to equipment.

Closing the pool properly helps prevent damage from harsh weather and ensures the pool water is as clean as possible for next year's use. This greatly reduces the amount of prep work that needs to take

place when the pool is opened next season. Here are some steps that should be taken. * Remove skimmer baskets, chlorine tablet baskets, ladders, vacuums, and any other accessories from the pool. * Test the pH, calcium harness and total alkalinity and do what's needed so that they are balanced. Follow manufacturer's guidelines for the correct levels. * Give the pool one last shock treatment. * Add a winterizing and algaecide treatment, following the manufacturer's guidelines. * Many pools need to have the piping flushed so that residual water is not resting in piping and tubing. This water can expand when frozen and cause serious damage. It is also recommended that the water level of the pool be drained so that it falls below the skimmer intake, helping to prevent water from making it back into the filtra-

tion system. There are also plugs and covers that can be used to seal the skimmer. * Cover the pool with a durable pool cover and secure so debris doesn't make its way into the clean pool water. Some covers feature an inflated pillow that is put underneath in the middle so that water doesn't accumulate on the cover from rain or snow and sink the cover. * Drain the water out of the filter. Remove all plugs from equipment like pumps, heater, and chlorinator. Leave them out so that if water does get back in, it can drain out.

Experienced pool owners get used to opening and closing their pools every season.

However, new pool owners may want to have a professional service come in and walk them through the process the first time. Some pool companies offer packages where the pool is opened and closed each season.
