50% of Canadian parents lack confidence in helping with reading, math skills

Ipsos Reid Research shows that 50% of Canadian parents lack confidence in helping their children with reading, writing and math homework. ABC Life Literacy Canada released new research findings concerning literacy in Canada from a report conducted on its behalf by national research firm Ipsos Reid. The report uncovered insightful perception on literacy from the over 1,000 Canadians polled. The Ipsos Reid survey found that 50 per cent

as playing cards, board games or cooking with a recipe, 15 per cent of Canadians admitted to spending no time engaged in these activities. Provincially speaking, the figure jumps to a high of 21 per cent in British Columbia and 18 per cent in Alberta. According to the survey, despite the approximately seven out of 10 Canadians who spend between one and 10 hours per week engaged in leisure reading, whether alone or with someone else in

many Canadians either don’t posses the literacy skills or don’t feel comfortable enough to use those skills to their fullest extent.” “We know from international studies that 42% of Canadians don’t have a high school graduate’s level of literacy proficiency, so perhaps these results are understandable,” commented Margaret Eaton, ABC Life Literacy Canada President. “We also know that the greatest predictor of a child’s success is the

MAX donor recognition campaign winding down for arena expansion project DRAYTON - The Mapleton Arena eXpansion (MAX) committee’s donor recognition wall campaign is winding down. To date almost $195,000 of the $250,000 community commitment towards the new addition at the PMD Arena has been fundraised through barbecues, a car draw, raffles, dances, ball hockey tournaments and the MAX donor recognition program. The committee hopes the building block campaign will finalize its fundraising commitment. “Dressing for success’ is the motto used by the MAX committee. “Our local community and user groups were the inspiration for the spacious new dressing rooms and lobby addition,” said MAX vice chair Kelly Culp. She explained success started within the first year after the new expansion was completed, noting that in the 200910 season, both the Drayton and District Figure Skating

Club and the Drayton Minor Hockey Association had the ultimate season success. The skating club was awarded “top club” at the Central Ontario Section-Weskate Competition in January, followed by the Bantam rep team winning the OMHA championship in March. Culp told the Community News it is a goal of the MAX committee to have every family currently involved with each of the arena’s major users - minor hockey, figure skating, the Reach Forth program and others - become a donor on the recognition wall, which will be unveiled this spring.
