A Message from our CEO and President

Lori Arsenault

As a resident of Wellington County, I am dedicated to excellence in rural health care, the support of our community, and the success of the Wellington Health Care Alliance (WHCA). As we move towards the building of the New Groves Hospital, my passion does not lie in bricks and mortar, but in continuing to optimize health care for our community.

I am so excited to join the Groves Hospital Foundation at such a pivotal time in our hospital’s history! I feel privileged to work with the outstanding Board of Directors, volunteers, donors, and staff to support the ongoing needs of our hospital as we work to build a New Groves for our community.

When you or a family member is ill or injured, where do you turn? If you’re like most in our community, you go to Groves Memorial Community Hospital. You know you will receive absolutely top-notch medical care and you also know that you’ll be treated with care and respect, by dedicated, compassionate health professionals in a warm, caring environment.

I am most looking forward to seeing the limitations of the current building be addressed as we build the New Groves Hospital (NGH). We as a community need to better enable our health care providers, support staff and volunteers to continue to provide the highest level of care. We look forward to providing a destination for optimal, comprehensive health care in Centre Wellington for our residents.

There were a number of Building and Planning meetings over this past summer; with all hospital departments being represented, allowing everyone to engage in the conversation about the NGH and provide input into the projected space.

The mock-up patient rooms you see below represent the culmination of weeks of work completed by Groves’ administration, medical staff, support staff, board members, foundation staff and volunteers, alongside Stantec Architecture and Infrastructure Ontario (IO). The mock-up exercise allows staff to visualize the functional requirements with the human needs of its varied users ensuring the new room layout will provide the best operational and patient experience.

My personal passions lie in Community Engagement and especially how philanthropy makes a difference in the lives of so many in our community. I have been honoured to work in the not-for-profit sector for the past 15 years in Wellington County. My previous roles included Executive Director for the Career Education Council of Guelph Wellington Dufferin and Campaign Director at United Way of Guelph & Wellington.

Building a new hospital takes a great deal of planning and time. All of the planning steps are compulsory for any hospital build in Ontario and will ensure that we are building the best possible New Groves Hospital. It represents a major Provincial and local investment in the health care of Centre Wellington and the surrounding area.

In the short time that I have been at the Foundation, I have met many incredible people; dedicated volunteers, donors, and staff, all working together to provide exceptional patient care here at GMCH.

And it is a very exciting time to work at Groves! Plans are well underway for the building of the New Groves Hospital, and I’ve had the privilege of attending some of the recent Building and Planning meetings. It is truly impressive the sheer size of the project and amount of work going on behind the scenes here at Groves. We are all working to ensure that our community has access to the best possible health care for generations to come.

The Digital Mammography Machine will provide Groves Hospital with a new standard of excellence in breast imaging and will allow Groves to continue to provide high-quality, safe and timely care to our patients. It is a known fact that early diagnosis is the key to survival, less aggressive treatment and ultimately a cure.

Currently, the Digital Imaging Team are evaluating the specifications for the equipment and reviewing vendor bids which will include onsite visits to see the equipment being used in a clinical setting. This will ensure that we purchase the best possible equipment for our patients. An announcement will be made when the equipment is in place.

Feature Profile: Speech Language Pathology Program

When most people think about Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) and Communicative Disorders Assistants (CDAs), they probably think of someone who helps people who stutter or have a lisp. While it’s true that they do help clients with those issues, their scope of practice is a whole lot broader.

Imagine being unable to communicate with people around you. Imagine that the people in your life cannot understand even the most basic requests that you try to make. That is the reality for many of the approximately 300 clients who are seen in the SLP Department at Groves Hospital.

For adult clients, our clinicians provide assessment and treatment for those who present with a variety of diagnoses such as; stroke, neurogenic communication disorders, voice and swallowing disorders. Services are also provided for adults and children with development disabilities, including but not limited to Autism and Down Syndrome.

Did you know? One in ten children has a communication disorder.

We have the opportunity to do something really special here with this new hospital Dr. Peter and Susan McPhedran have been Centre Wellington residents for over thirty years. Susan taught at Centre Wellington District High School for many years.

The Groves Hospital Speech and Language Department is also a partner site of Wee Talk, the Preschool Speech and Language System of Wellington, Dufferin and Guelph. In this program, clinicians use iPads to help children with a variety of communication difficulties, such as autism and apraxia, which can leave children unable to communicate verbally. Our clinicians teach children how to use iPads with communication apps, in order to provide each child with a voice. Both our clinicians and the families of our clients can see the positive impact of the “Wee Talk” program when their child’s face lights up as they are able to communicate effectively for the first time using new technology.

Peter was a founding partner of Family Practice Associates of Elora and has been on the medical staff at Groves Memorial Community Hospital since 1984. Two of their three children were born at Groves Hospital.

“Don’t be afraid of technology, it may open doors you never dreamed about. [My son] Lucas always had lots of things to say, but didn’t have the tools to say them [out loud]. Thanks to Wee Talk, their wonderful staff, and the world of technology, Lucas is proving to us that he has no limits.” Grateful Mother, Jean Godin.

Recognizing the need for a new hospital in Centre Wellington, Dr. McPhedran decided to join the Groves Hospital Foundation Board of Directors over two years ago.

Technology is ever changing, and although the SLP Department at Groves Hospital strives to stay current in their information and resources, all of this is costly and requires ongoing funding. The SLP Department needs the help of the community to make these resources readily available and accessible for all of their clients.

How can we help them get there?

Wish List: • Three (3) additional iPads (SLP Department currently has 4 iPads, but 7 clinicians) • Funds for SLP app purchases (certain apps are extremely beneficial yet some are several hundred dollars per app) • Education funds to advance clinical practice Heather Morgan is the Speech Language Pathologist at Groves Hospital, pictured above right, with a client.

“Groves is a unique rural hospital. The care here is absolutely excellent. The staff are all warm, friendly, caring people,” said Dr. Peter McPhedran. “Having a new hospital is absolutely critical for our community. We need a hospital facility that is modern and can accommodate new technology if we are going to continue to provide excellent patient care and attract new and world class physicians.”

“Being on the Foundation board made me realize the importance but also the challenges of raising $20 million,” said Dr. McPhedran. “Everyone needs to do their part if we are going to meet this goal within the community – that is why Susan and I donated.”

Recently Susan and Dr. Peter McPhedran made their generous gift of $100,000 towards the New Groves Hospital Campaign.

The spirit of philanthropy is the commitment to help one another; to voluntarily give where there is no obligation to do so. Together we can make a difference.

The McPhedrans believe, “We are really fortunate to have such an excellent health care facility in our community and we have the opportunity to do something really special here with this new hospital.”

Q & A with GHVA Volunteers Q

What inspired you to become a volunteer?

A

Carol: I was approached by the then President of the GHVA, Ann Van de Kamer, to help out with the operation of the Opportunity Shop. Ann’s compassion and excitement for our local hospital gave me the inspiration to apply to volunteer with the GHVA. Sharyn: I had worked at the Oakville Trafalgar Hospital in a clerical position for many years. I was impressed by the enthusiasm and positive results the volunteers in their Gift Shop demonstrated. This inspired me to join the GHVA.

Are you able to share an approximate amount raised by the gift shop in recent history?

A

Our records show that during the period of 1991 to 2014, the Gift & Coffee Shop accumulated an approximate total of $388,000 in revenue, after expenses.

Q

How long has the Groves Hospital Volunteer Association (GHVA) Gift & Coffee Shop been in operation at Groves?

A

The Gift & Coffee Shop has been in operation since May 1964; a total of over 51 years. When it first opened, it was more of a snack cupboard than a shop. Groves Hospital later donated the space for the shop, in the location where you see it today.

What do you like most about volunteering for the GHVA/in the Gift Shop?

How many GHVA volunteers work regularly at the gift shop?

A

Including ourselves, there are 27 volunteers, 24 actively working at the Shop currently.

Two of our volunteers have been with the shop over 30 years; Margret Duffield for 34 years & Anneke Wymer for 35 years!

We both find the whole process gratifying; chatting with our hospital staff, with patients who are able to come through the shop doors, and with loved ones visiting (especially those who seem to need someone to talk to). It is a pleasure to work alongside all of the dedicated GHVA volunteers who feel the same way. All of the volunteers at the Gift Shop are proud of our contribution towards raising funds for Groves. This is our “Community Hospital”!

Do you have any other exciting news or updates you would like to share with our readers?

A

The “Christmas Open House” at the Gift Shop will take place on Friday, November 13th and Saturday, November 14th. Come and check out unique gift ideas for those on your list and enjoy a cup of hot apple cider & a treat. You will be able to browse at our special price table and can purchase a draw ticket. We hope to see you there!

Are there any costs associated with running the gift shop (which are not covered by the proceeds)?

A

All costs for operating the Gift & Coffee Shop are the responsibility of the GHVA. All new equipment, ordering of stock and payment of invoices is maintained by the GHVA.

What do the funds raised by the gift shop go towards?

A

Funds raised by the Gift & Coffee shop (along with other revenue from GHVA business ventures and special events) are donated to Groves, to update and acquire much needed new equipment and supplies. The following are only a few pieces of equipment and/or pledges the GHVA has donated over its 82 year history: pledge of $1 million over 7 years for DI/ PACS; $500,000 pledge for CT Scan Suite; Operating Room Anaesthesia Machine, table, and lights; 6 Ambulatory Telemetry Machines; 2 IV Infusion Pumps and a Smoke Evacuation System.
