Ananas fabric emerged in the Philippines around the 19th century when locals devised methods to extract fibers from ananas leaves into yarns. The Spanish referred to this material as "Piña" (”Pineapple” in English). Crafted entirely by hand, Piña demands exceptional craftsmanship and ample time to bring each piece of apparel to life. From its inception, Piña fabric has symbolized a luxurious lifestyle with premium price tags, often accessible only to the elite.

Vải dứa xuất hiện trong đời sống Philippines khoảng thế kỷ 19, khi người dân địa phương tìm ra cách tước tơ, kéo sợi từ lá dứa. Người Tây Ban Nha gọi chất liệu này là Piña (tức Pineapple). Được sản xuất hoàn toàn thủ công, Piña đòi hỏi cao cả tay nghề thợ cũng như thời gian hoàn thiện thành phẩm. Vì vậy, từ khi được phát hiện, vải dứa luôn là chất liệu sang trọng với giá cả đắt đỏ, hầu như chỉ dành cho tầng lớp khá giả, có địa vị.
