Integrated Pool Water Treatment

Dryden Aqua

Integrated water treatment for pools Active.Filter.Media, the first and only active media to

replace sand. Certified for drinking water. When used as part of our integrated system, we can reduce chlorine demand and toxic chlorine by-products to the absolute minimum by DAP factor

Active Polyfloc, the first and only multi-spectrum coagulant and flocculent engineered for swimming pools. Removes dissolved organics and phosphate. Absolutely essential for Cryptosporidium and Giardia oocyst disease control

Zeta Potential Mixer, for mechanical coagulation and oocyst destruction. Amplifies the performance of APF and ACO. Prevents pseudomonas bacteria floc reaching the pool.

Active Catalytic Oxidation, a unique product reduces

photolysis of chlorine from UV and sunlight. Helps make all surfaces self sterilising, prevents biofilm formation and reduces combined chlorine

Dryden Aqua are Marine Biologists Aquatic mammals living in chlorinated systems require the best possible environment with zero or very low concentration of chlorine by-products.

Results •Reduce chlorine demand by 50% to 95% •Run a public pool at under 0.2mg/l inorganic combined chlorine, or a private pool with virtually no chlorine or oxidising chemicals •Almost eliminate disinfection by-products •Comply with upper health and safety limits for chloroform, nitrogen trichloride and Cyanogen chloride •Swimming in a poor pool over DAP >4 is equivalent to smoking a cigarette every 3 minutes, we solve this problem. How do we achieve these results ? ----->

Some Examples Swimming Pools • Edinburgh Leisure, 3.3 million clients / year, policy to only use DrydenAqua AFM • Gleneagles and Crieff Hydro, the top Spa Hotels in the UK • Jumeirha Group, one of the top hotel groups in the world • Virgin Active, Next Generation & David Lloyd Leisure Centres • Public pools in France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland and around the world Aquaria • Florya Aquarium Istanbul. largest aquarium in Europe, 4000 cubm/hr recycled • Lisbon Aquarium, largest aquarium in Portugal • The Deep.. Much better performance than PAC APF is a multi-spectrum coagulant and flocculent APF will reduce the oxidation demand, and reduce chlorine consumption much more than PAC, aluminium or a polyelectrolyte. Essential in order to remove crypto oocysts. 10% of public pools with have oocysts of Crypto and / or Giradia in the sand filters, measured by DNA analysis. 3500 cases every year in UK pools, approx 1000 in Germany (Eurosurveillance, Volume 12, ) APF contains NoPhos to remove phosphate, if there is zero phosphate in the water bacteria and algae can not grow. APF removes ammonium, but this works best when ACO is also added to the water. APF also helps prevent bacteria growing in the solids retained by the filter

How does it work ? •

Most of the particles and dissolved components, have a – ve charge.

APF and NoPhos neutralise and give them a +ve charge

The +ve and -ve particles attract to form larger particle that are then easier to filter out of the water.

AFM filtration with APF will remove most particles down to 1 micron and most sub-micron particles as wells as many chemicals in solution.

A high +ve or –ve zeta potential will give a colloidal suspension and turbid water. A neutral zeta potential around pH 7, will provide the clearest possible water. It is therefore important to apply the correct dose of APF in accordance to the Goldilcocks equations, not too little or too much but just the right amount in accordance to PAWS

APF drags chemicals out of solution‌ coagulation

ZPM installation showing ACO injection

ZPM is essential for APF coagulation reactions The ZPM forms nano-bubbles that explode on the surface of oocysts, bacteria, fungi, yeast and viri. The high shear forces will kill crypto, or damage the oocysts and predispose them to oxidation by chlorine. The act of moving water, changes the way the water behaves. The ZPM generates hydroxyl radicals that aid disinfection. Manufactured 100% 316 stainless steel

AFM Active Filter Media

UK Green Apple Award for the best Environmental product in the UK for 2004

Chartered Institute of Water & Environmental Management of the UK commendation awarded Dryden Aqua

Our Technology is leading Europe

AFM best Pool product in Europe 2009

• AFM Active Filter Media is the first and only activated filter media • Developed out of a 1.2m Euro research program in cooperation with the European Commission under the Life Environment initiative and UK Government under the WRAP program. • Manufactured in a dedicated factory under ISO 90012008 procedures. Audited by NQA • Certified and audited by UK Government under Regulation 61.

• Surface -ve Zeta potential adsorbs +ve charged particles formed by APF • High uniformity coefficient and sphericity value insure good fluid hydraulics and filtration performance • Surface catalytic properties oxidise bacteria and prevent biofouling.

Comparative trial •

Comparative trials conducted by the French National Government Organization, using 2.2m diam filters, one with AFM and the second with French crushed glass filter media.

• Biofouling. – AFM active filter media did not become fouled by bacteria. Garo filter media became a biofilter. The bacteria then caused coagulation of the filter media and worm-hole channelling of water through the bed, resulting a substantial deterioration of filter performance.

• Pathogenic bacteria – Vibrio is one of the main fish pathogens, Vibrio can also cause Cholera in people as well as a range of other diseases, Vibrio spp is found in many pool sand and crushed glass filters in high numbers. High levels of Vibrio bacteria were recorded after the Garo filter media. The trial needed to be terminated before harm was inflicted on the fish.

• Back-wash performance – What goes into a filter must come out in the back-wash. Nausicaa recorded much solids and organics matter in AFM back-wash, this tells you that AFM performance is far superior.

Performance of AFM against crushed glass and sand 1. At a water flow of 30 m/hr, the reduction

3

of chlorine oxidation demand by AFM is 22%, sand is approx 10% and crushed glass is 8%. AFM is therefore twice as good as sand of crushed glass.

2. At a water flow of 20 m/hr, AFM has a

performance of 65%, crushed glass 38% and sand at 33%

2

1

3. At a water flow of 15m/hr, AFM has a

performance of 84%, crushed glass at 55% and sand 52%. When APF and ZPM and ACP are used we increase performance to 97% with our system

Conclusion AFM is 2 to 4 x times better performance than sand or crushed glass, and is the only media that allows us to reduce the Pool Performance Factor to under 1

Summary

Dryden aqua integrated pool water treatment

• 75% to 90% reduction in chlorine consumption • 75% to 90% Reduction of chlorine disinfection by-products, nitrogen trichloride • Perfectly clear water, no turbidity <0.03 ntu • A log 6 reduction in bacterial levels, elimination of endotoxins and exotoxins • Very high protection against legionella, because there is no biofilm • Very high protection against crypto oocysts, because there is no bacteria induced bed coagulation and worm-hole channels • Pools are simple and easy to operate • DPD analysis only gives an indication of combined chlorine • Pools are a much lower cost to operate, savings in chemicals, water & energy. Return in capital usually under 18 months
