DON’T BLOW THE GAS WINDFALL. BUILD THE FUTURE INSTEAD.
Australia is sitting on a brutal contradiction.
We say we want a strong economy, lower emissions, secure jobs and a future for our children. Yet we continue to export enormous volumes of gas, collect too little public value from it, and then argue about whether we can afford to rebuild our manufacturing base, modernise training, or bring down industrial power prices.
If a 25% tax on gas exports gives us $17 billion a year to invest, then the real question is not whether we can afford to act. It’s whether we can afford not to.
Because this is not just about tax. It is about national purpose.
Australia needs a clear strategic objective: to become a green manufacturing hub. Not a slogan. Not a ministerial soundbite. A real national mission, backed by real investment, real policy discipline and real industrial ambition.
What does that mean in practice?

It means we stop behaving like a country that digs things up, ships them offshore, and then wonders why the jobs, technology and long-term wealth end up somewhere else. It means we use today’s fossil fuel revenue to build tomorrow’s sustainable industries. It means we turn a temporary windfall into permanent national capability.
That should be the test for every dollar.
Low-Emissions Green Steel
The first priority should be green steel and green metals.
Australia has the ingredients to become a serious producer of low-emissions steel. We have the ore. We have the magnetite. We have the industrial capability. We have the engineering knowledge. What we have lacked is the political will and strategic investment to make it happen at scale.
If we are serious about cutting emissions and serious about sovereign capability, then green steel is not optional. Steel sits at the centre of everything: construction, defence, transport, infrastructure, energy. We cannot talk about a resilient, modern industrial economy if we remain dependent on importing highervalue products while exporting raw inputs.
We need to invest in the infrastructure, technology and industrial ecosystems that allow green steel manufacturing to take root in Australia and stay here.
Sovereign Manufacturing Capability
The second priority is to build sovereign capability for the clean energy economy itself. Australia should be able to manufacture wind towers, transmission towers, transformers, batteries, solar technologies and the heavy fabricated components required for the energy transition. Not all of it. Not overnight. But far more than we do now.
This is not about trying to out-China China by copying the cheapest model. It is about doing what Australia does best: high-quality, advanced, innovative manufacturing. We helped pioneer solar technology. We should be investing in the next generation of it, not just importing finished products and congratulating ourselves for installing them.
This requires targeted support for research and development, commercialisation, modern fabrication capability and advanced manufacturing methods. It means using government investment to incentivise private capital. It means giving Australian manufacturers the confidence to expand, automate intelligently, and build at scale.
Cheap, Clean Electricity
The third priority is simple, but fundamental: make clean electricity cheap.
If Australia wants to process more of what it digs up, it must give industry a compelling reason to do that

Manufacturing the Future Through Tech Innovation

processing here. One of the best reasons in the world would be access to reliable, low-cost, clean electricity.
We used to have a powerful competitive advantage in energy. We should aim to have one again, but this time built on renewables, storage, transmission and smart industrial policy.
This matters for two reasons. First, major processing industries need competitive power to survive and grow. Second, if we want manufacturing to be environmentally sustainable, we must make sure it is powered in the most sustainable way possible.
A nation with abundant sun, wind, minerals and engineering talent should not be struggling to imagine itself as a clean industrial powerhouse. That should be the plan.
A Massive Uplift in Training
The fourth priority must be training; on a scale far bigger than we are currently contemplating.
We need industry-connected training in schools. We need a massive uplift in trade training across every state and territory. We need modernised facilities, better support for trainers, stronger apprenticeship pathways and a far more serious national conversation about technical skills.
Why? Because the workforce our children will enter will be very different to the one many of us entered.
AI, automation and digital systems will reshape work across the economy. Some jobs will disappear. Others will change beyond recognition. But there will still be one enduring truth: a country cannot build, maintain, repair or manufacture the things it depends on without skilled people.
There is no future in which Australia thrives by outsourcing capability and hoping service-sector work will fill the gap forever. We cannot build sovereign industry without welders, fabricators, electricians, engineers, coders, technicians and advanced tradespeople. And we cannot produce them at scale without investing now.
That is why this debate matters so much.
A Long-Term Nation-Building Agenda
A gas export tax should not disappear into the general churn of government spending. It should be tied to a long-term nation-building agenda: green steel, sovereign manufacturing capability, cheap clean industrial power, and the skills pipeline to sustain it.
This is about creating meaningful work for the next generation. It is about making sure Australia still knows how to build things, process things and invent things when the export booms move on. It is about using the wealth we generate today to create the industries that will still matter tomorrow.
Because sooner or later, the question will come from our children: what did you do with it? Did you use the gas windfall to build a stronger, cleaner, more self-reliant Australia? Or did you let it slip away, and leave the next generation to inherit the consequences?
We should tax the gas, and we should use the proceeds to build our future.
Because if we don’t build it here, we will buy it from somewhere else, and spend the next generation wondering where all the good jobs went.

BOWHILL UNVEILS ROBOTIC WELDING SYSTEMS & CNC MACHINES AT OPEN DAY
In February, Bowhill Engineering opened their doors to showcase their new facilities and advanced manufacturing capabilities to industry partners, government representatives, and our regional community.
The day was about more than new equipment. It was about why Bowhill has invested in it, what it means for their team, and how it positions regional South Australia manufacturing for the future.
As CEO, Jodie Hawkes shared in her opening address, “Over the past few years, we’ve been very deliberate about the kind of business we’re building here at Bowhill. One that can take on complex work, deliver safely and consistently, and create real opportunities for people in regional South Australia.”
Guests stepped inside their workshop to see four major pieces of equipment now in operation, including:
• three state-of-the-art robotic welding systems supporting structural steel fabrication capabilities for major infrastructure projects
• an advanced CNC Machining Centre enhancing precision metal fabrication and complex component manufacturing.

AUSTRALIAN-MADE AS9S ROLL OUT
The first Australian-made AS9 Huntsman Self-Propelled Howitzers have rolled off the production line at Hanwha Defence Australia’s Armoured Vehicle Centre of Excellence (H-ACE) in Geelong, marking a milestone for local defence manufacturing.
Hanwha Defence Australia (HDA) confirmed that three vehicles – manufactured in Victoria – have now debuted, joining the initial Batch 1 vehicles announced in February last year, which comprised two AS9s and one AS10 built in South Korea. The latest rollout signals the return of high-technology armoured vehicle manufacturing to the Geelong region.
The vehicles will now undergo further testing and training activities as the capability prepares to enter service. HDA is working alongside soldiers from the Australian Army in the H-ACE training wing to prepare operators and maintainers.
“Seeing the first Australian made AS9s come off the production line and drive their first laps around our test track is a milestone that we’re all very proud of,” said HDA and UK/Europe CEO Mr Ben Hudson. “This program will see a game changing capability introduced to the Australian Army underpinned by a strategic partner in Hanwha Defence Australia. With the K9 User Community now 11 nations strong, the AS9 variant pushes the boundaries of the platform.”

CSIRO BOOSTS RENEWABLE TESTING CAPACITY
The CSIRO has unveiled a $3 million upgrade to its Renewable Energy Integration Facility in Newcastle, expanding Australia’s ability to test and commercialise technologies critical to the energy transition.
The upgraded facility can simulate microgrids and grid faults, test inverter performance and run large-scale experiments combining solar, batteries and electric vehicles. The investment more than doubles testing capacity and introduces advanced emulation and realtime simulation tools.
“The Renewable Energy Integration Facility provides industry, researchers and system operators with an independent laboratory to test how technologies such as wind, solar, batteries and electric vehicles can integrate safely and reliably into the grid,” said CSIRO chief executive Dr Doug Hilton.
“As Australia transitions to a cleaner, more electrified economy, we need the confidence that new energy technologies can operate safely and reliably across the system. This upgraded facility strengthens Australia’s capability to test exactly that.”
“The facility will support more efficient use of electrical infrastructure, ultimately helping improve energy affordability for Australian homes and businesses.”
Energy Systems Research Program director Dr John Ward said the laboratory would address unique national challenges, including long distribution networks and record rooftop solar uptake.
“This facility allows us to work side by side with industry and market bodies to design innovative solutions.”

PILBARA GRANTS BOOST LOCAL MANUFACTURING
The WA Government has partnered with BHP and CORE Innovation Hub to deliver $500,000 through the Made in the Pilbara initiative, aimed at supporting business growth and diversification in the region.
Eleven Pilbara businesses will receive funding to drive innovation, expand local capability and create employment and training opportunities. The projects are expected to create more than 40 jobs and 14 apprenticeships, while unlocking more than $800,000 in private investment.
Nearly $14 million has been allocated to Western Australian businesses under the Local Manufacturing Investment Fund, which supports the initiative.
“By supporting local businesses to grow and diversify, we’re helping to create more skilled jobs, strengthen regional supply chains, and build long-term capability in our manufacturing sector,” said manufacturing and Pilbara minister Amber-Jade Sanderson.
WA Local Labor Member for the Pilbara Kevin Michel said, “I’m proud to be part of a government that’s diversifying the Pilbara’s economy and ensuring our region continues to drive the national economy forward.”
BHP Western Australia Iron Ore Asset president Tim Day added: “Initiatives like this build long term capability and help to keep the Pilbara firing.”
“Made in the Pilbara gives local businesses the chance to innovate, grow and compete, while creating skilled employment and training opportunities in the communities where we operate. A strong local supply chain really strikes at the heart of our strategy in the region.”

STRONG INDUSTRY ENGAGEMENT AT
API 579-1 ASME FFS-1 FITNESS-FOR-SERVICE
COURSE
Weld Australia recently delivered its highly regarded API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 Fitness-for-Service Evaluation Course in Perth and Adelaide, bringing together engineers and industry professionals for three days of in-depth technical learning. The course provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of how to apply the API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 standard to make informed run, repair and replacement decisions for pressure vessels, piping and tanks. Through a structured combination of lectures, discussion and practical examples, attendees explored how stress analysis, materials engineering and nondestructive inspection interact in real-world fitness-forservice (FFS) assessments.
Across the three days, delegates worked through assessments covering brittle fracture, general and local metal loss, pitting corrosion, hydrogen damage, cracklike flaws, creep, fire damage and more. In-class problem solving sessions reinforced learning outcomes and allowed participants to apply Level 1 and Level 2 assessment methodologies in practical scenarios.
The course was presented by Dr Gregory Brown. With extensive experience in computational mechanics and FFS assessments across multiple industries, Dr Brown provided invaluable insight into the technical foundations and practical application of the standard. His direct involvement in the development of API 579 added significant depth to the training. Feedback from attendees highlighted the course’s technical rigour, practical relevance and the value of learning directly from a leading authority in the field.

WELD AUSTRALIA’S COMBINED AS/NZS ISO 3834 + AS/NZS 5131 CERTIFICATION SERVIC E

Weld Australia now offers an innovative combined certification service for AS/NZS ISO 3834 and AS/NZS 5131. This new offering streamlines the certification process for fabricators and structural steel manufacturers, reducing time, cost, and administrative burden while ensuring compliance with both critical standards.
This service is only available to businesses already certified to AS/NZS ISO 3834, or those completing a dual certification. AS/NZS 5131 certification is provided as an additional component—not as a stand-alone certification.
By integrating the audits for AS/NZS ISO 3834 and AS/NZS 5131, Weld Australia eliminates redundant certification processes, providing a simplified, efficient, and cost-effective solution. Companies seeking AS/NZS ISO 3834 certification can now opt to include AS/NZS 5131 as part of a single, comprehensive audit, ensuring compliance with welding quality and structural steel requirements in one streamlined step.
Our combined certification offering removes unnecessary duplication, making compliance easier and more accessible for businesses of all sizes. By consolidating audits into a single, integrated process, companies will experience significant cost savings, as they no longer need to undergo separate assessments. Additionally, the time and effort saved by avoiding multiple audits will allow businesses to focus on operational efficiency and quality outcomes rather than administrative burdens.
