As 2023 draws to a close, I thought it pertinent to reflect on Weld Australia’s key achievements this year. At all times, the Weld Australia team focused on providing the resources and services that members needed most. Our primary goal is to ensure that the Australian welding industry remains locally and globally competitive, both now and into the future.

While 2023 presented challenges such as supply chain issues and skilled labour shortages, Australia’s welding industry has continued to go from strength to strength. In fact, our 2023 Member Survey indicated that most fabrication businesses have a very strong pipeline of work, capacity for additional work, and rate the prospects of their business as strong.

Weld Australia members continue to lead the way in innovation, environmental sustainability, diversity and inclusion, and health and safety. We are extremely proud to be your peak body.

We’ve been busy behind the scenes at Weld Australia too.

Advocacy Our advocacy work paid dividends this year.

Focused on issues such skill shortages, onshoring and local content procurement, renewable energy and adherence to quality standards, we generated significant media coverage and political interest.

Events Almost 1,000 people attended 19 member events, on topics as diverse as mechanical testing and cobots in the Australian manufacturing industry, right through to an update on the revisions of EN 15085 Railway applications – Welding of railway vehicles.

In collaboration with the Australia Institute’s Centre for Future Work, we hosted the National Manufacturing Summit at Old Parliament House on 2 and 3 August. With the theme of Manufacturing the Energy Revolution: Industrial Opportunities from Renewable Energy, the event was a great success.

We hosted the much expanded program of Welding Excellence Awards. This year, five awards ceremonies were held across the country throughout October and November, with a total of more than 670 people coming together to acknowledge the incredible calibre of work achieved over the past 12 months.

We launched new Industry Groups this year, focused on Renewable Energy and Advanced Manufacturing, and reinvigorated our Defence Industry Network, bringing together more members than ever before.

Training and Skills Our training department went from strength to strength, with over 350 students completing courses. Weld Australia trained and qualified 10 new International Welding Engineers (IWE), 96 Welding Inspectors, 113 Welding Supervisors, and six International Welding Specialists (IWS).

Our work on the MEM Resources Project continued, with the resources officially launched and already adopted by some TAFEs. In exciting news, Weld Australia won the excellence in manufacturing skills development award at the 2023 Endeavour Awards for the MEM Training Package Resources. For further details, see the article on page 14.

We expanded our Advanced Manufacturing School Outreach Program in New South Wales significantly, with over 130 welding simulators installed in more than 65 schools.

Qualification and Certification Our qualification and certification services remained as popular as ever in 2023, with 11 new companies certified to AS/NZS ISO 3834 Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials; DIN 2303 Welding and allied processes – Quality requirements to be met by production and maintenance companies for military products; or EN 15085.

The Australian Welder Certification Register (AWCR) and WeldQ platform also continued to grow. Over 720 users registered this year, taking the total number of users up to 12,290.

We expanded our certification services, adding AS/NZS 9001, AS/NZS ISO 14001 and AS/NZS ISO 45001 to our offering. We also added the IIW International Welding Practitioner (IWP) qualification.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS OF WELD AUSTRALIA’S 2023 WELDING EXCELLENCE AWARDS Craftsmanship, quality and professionalism have been front and centre over the last month, with the winners of the Weld Australia 2023 Welding Excellence Awards announced. In the last month, we celebrated

the winners of the Queensland and Northern Territory, and Victoria and Tasmania Awards. This follows on from the previous month, which saw the Western Australia, New South Wales and ACT, and South Australian Awards take place.

Weld Australia’s Excellence Awards are the most prestigious event on the welding industry calendar. The Awards showcase and celebrate the world-class work being undertaken by local welders, fabricators and industry educators.

The 2023 Welding Excellence Awards not only spotlight the world-class contributions of our local talent but also underline the industry’s continuous drive for excellence.

At Weld Australia, we are immensely proud to elevate and celebrate those who are setting new benchmarks in quality, safety, and innovation in welding.

This year’s winners feature businesses and individuals committed to the pursuit of innovative, sustainable solutions that minimise risk and maximise project outcomes, as well as initiatives designed to increase the breadth and depth of skilled labour within the welding sector.

Craftsmanship, quality and professionalism have been front and centre over the last month, with the winners of the 2023 Welding Excellence Awards for Western Australia, New South Wales and the ACT, and South Australia announced.

Weld Australia’s Excellence Awards are the most prestigious event on the welding industry calendar. The Awards showcase and celebrate the world-class work being undertaken by local welders, fabricators and industry educators.

This year, five awards ceremonies were held across the country throughout October and November, with a total of more than 670 people coming together to acknowledge the incredible calibre of work achieved over the past 12 months.

Queensland and NT Awards Ceremony.

The Queensland and Northern Territory ceremony was held on Wednesday 15 November at Indooroopilly Golf Club. The Victoria and Tasmania ceremony was held at Huntingdale Golf Club on Wednesday 29 November.

According to Weld Australia’s CEO, Geoff Crittenden, “The 2023 Welding Excellence Awards highlight the outstanding achievements of our local professionals while emphasising the industry’s unwavering commitment to excellence. At Weld Australia, we are proud recognise both companies and individuals who are pushing boundaries in welding quality, safety, and innovation.”

THE WINNERS OF THE 2023 QUEENSLAND & NT WELDING EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Munster Services Group won the 2023 Company of the Year Award - Fabrication. Munster Services Group have been one of the market leaders in complex, multi-disciplinary project delivery since 2008. They deliver turnkey engineering, fabrication and maintenance solutions across the infrastructure, water, utilities, food processing, and building sectors. In the last three years, Munster has experienced significant growth, and helping bring manufacturing back to Queensland.

They are committed to supporting their local community and upskilling the next generation of welders, with 91 apprentices and trainees.

Bridgeman won the 2023 Indigenous Company of the Year Award. Bridgeman is a 26-year-old proud Supply Nation certified Indigenous company.

They specialise in advanced metal manufacturing and construction, for clients such as Tier 1 companies like John Holland, BESIX Watpac, Lendlease, CPB, and Boeing. One of their key goals is to increase employment opportunities for First Nations people. They have implemented a number of social initiative programs, focused on supporting apprentices, youth detainees and past offenders, First Nations people, and women in construction.

Coregas won the 2023 Company of the Year Award - Supplier. Coregas is the only Australian industrial gases company and has been operating since 1974.

They manufacture gases locally and distribute throughout Australia and New Zealand via a network of branches and third parties. Coregas continually seeks to raise the bar in terms of service, quality, and value. Coregas invests heavily in community organisations, the learning and development of its people, and continuous improvement in quality and safety.

Monadelphous won the 2023 Health and Safety in Welding Award. Monadelphous is an ASX-200 company providing multidisciplinary construction, maintenance and industrial services to many of the largest companies in the resources, energy and infrastructure sectors.

Monadelphous is dedicated to setting the highest standards for health and safety in the welding industry.

Rockpress won the 2023 Project of the Year Award for the Gunungia Drive Shared Pathway Bridge.

Rockpress is a privately-owned Queensland-based manufacturing powerhouse with a proud history dating back to 1972. The Gunungia Drive Shared Pathway Bridge project presented a unique challenge: constructing a 35-meter bridge within the confines of a workshop designed to handle small to medium assemblies in

purpose built welding bays. Rockpress developing advanced manufacturing jig structures that ensured precision, drastically reduced distortion and minimized misalignment of members caused by possible variances in the section profiles.

BHP won the 2023 Training and Education Organisation Award. BHP was recognised for their highly innovative in-house training program, the BHP FutureFit Academy. The Academy disrupts the normal approach to training, attracting, and enabling diverse candidates to work in mining. The Program delivers high-scale modular 12-month Maintenance Traineeships and 24-month Trade Apprenticeships, and it significantly increases female and First Nations representation in mining and trades. Permanently employed with BHP from day one of training, learners graduate from the BHP FutureFit Academy with a nationally recognised Certificate II or III qualification, and are deployed to BHP’s operational sites.

Clayton Dunne from TAFE QLD Skills Tech.

Clayton Dunne from TAFE QLD Skills Tech and Dave Holak from TAFE QLD East Coast were joint winners of the 2023 Training and Education - Individual Teacher Award. Clayton Dunne is a Leading Vocational teacher with TAFE Qld SkillsTech in the Metal Fabrication team. Clayton has a great depth of specialised knowledge in welding and has been part of the panel to upgrade the AS1796 standard. Clayton took a lead role in preparing welders for the Rheinmetall project, qualifying them against the ISO9606 and ensuring they were well prepared for the DIN standard test in Germany. Clayton’s ability to engage learners from basic skills to highly technical cert welding skills is a testament to his teaching.

With over 25 years of experience, Dave Holak is an exceptional engineering teacher known for his effective teaching style and commitment to student success. Dave recently gained his International Welding Inspectors qualification, further enhancing his knowledge and skills in welding. Dave has also led several major projects in the field of engineering education. He has spearheaded initiatives to introduce innovative teaching techniques, integrate technology into the curriculum, and establish industry partnerships for experiential learning opportunities. His efforts have resulted in enhanced student engagement and improved learning.

Brittany Hague from JRS Manufacturing Group was named the 2023 Young Trades Person of the Year.

Brittany Hague is an apprentice boilermaker at JRS Manufacturing Group in Toowoomba. She commenced her apprenticeship in January 2022. When asked what makes Brittany’s work stand out from others, her supervisors will tell you, her steady hand, and finesse in technique when welding, all make her work quality stand out. Her supervisors still recall, not long after starting with JRS Group, giving Brittany the task of assisting with a complex fabrication in the workshop. Having never worked with a welder before, Brittany completed this flux based work like she had been working with it for years.

Peter Keubler from COB was presented a special CEO’s Award for services to the Australian welding industry. Peter is a professional welding engineer and metallurgist with over 40 years’ experience in the construction, fabrication and welding products industries.

He is a qualified International Welding Engineer and has a degree in metallurgy. Peter has held management, technical and consulting positions with a wide range of companies and is currently employed by BOC as Technical Manager. In this role, he is responsible for coordinating technical welding support for BOC’s largest customers as well as robotics applications.

Trevor Vonhoff from CS Energy was named the Welding Professional of the Year – Welding Coordinator. Trevor is the Boiler and Pressure Vessels Technical Officer at CS Energy. In this role, he is the Welding Coordinator in charge of outages at the Callide B, C and Kogan Creek power stations. He also supports day to day welding operations. With a career spanning 45 years, Trevor holds IWI-S and IWS qualifications, and is known for his high quality standards.

Andrew Gray from HiVue was named the Welding Professional of the Year – Welding Supervisor.

Andrew is Managing Director of HiVue Inspection and Compliance, and HiVue Business Advisors. He has significant local and international experience in welding inspection and quality management, manufacturing and mining technology. He is extremely qualified, holding IWI-S, IWS, CSWIP and AINDT qualifications, to name a few. Described as an amazing mentor, he is always happy shares his knowledge.

Paul Court from Maxcon Industries, and Robart Jacob from Melco Engineering were joint winners of the 2023 Welding Professional of the Year – Welding Inspector Award.

Paul Court has over 25 years of experience in the industry, progressing from an apprentice boilermaker to a skilled welder, before becoming a Welding Supervisor and Inspector. His extensive career spans various sectors such as cryogenics, defence, and mining, including significant work in liquid gas transport and vacuum insulated piping systems. Committed to excellence and safety in welding, Paul has enhanced his expertise with multiple qualifications, including diplomas in WHS, Business, Project Management, and Building and Construction.

Robart Jacob is a multifaceted Mechanical Engineer and Welding Coordinator based in Mackay. He is currently the Welding & QAQC Manager for three of Melco Engineering’s branches. His career began in India and flourished over seven years in Singapore, where he gained extensive experience as a Welding Inspector and Coordinator in the shipbuilding industry, acquiring additional certifications such as CSWIP 3.1 and API 570.

After migrating to Australia, Robart played a key role in Melco Engineering’s recent ISO accreditations. Robart continues to advance his expertise, recently obtaining his IIW International Welding Specialist qualification.

THE WINNERS OF THE 2023 VICTORIA & TASMANIA WELDING EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Alstom won the 2023 Company of the Year Award - Fabrication. Alstom is the leading rail manufacturer in Australia and New Zealand. They have provided sustainable infrastructure solutions for more than 100 years, and currently employ over 2,300 people across more than 25 sites. Alstom’s Dandenong manufacturing site is home to their Welding Centre of Excellence where they develop skills and teach advanced welding technologies, testing and certification. The Centre of Excellence specialises in resistance spot welding and arc welding, and is accredited to both EN 15085 and AS/NZS ISO 3834.

Coregas won the 2023 Company of the Year Award - Supplier. Coregas is the only Australian industrial gases company and has been operating since 1974. As a key partner to the welding industry, Coregas continually seeks to raise the bar in terms of service, quality, and value. Shadbolt Group won the 2023 Project of the Year Award for their Thermal Oxidiser Project. The Thermal Oxidiser is used to treat waste vapours and liquid wastes by combustion before it is exhausted to the atmosphere to control air pollution. The Oxidiser was 18m tall x 3.6m in diameter. Shadbolt Group supplied materials and all necessary labour to fabricate, weld, test, trial assemble, surface treat and install the main vertical Oxidiser section. Since the late 1980s, Shadbolt Group has grown from a general engineering and maintenance workshop into a highly professional heavy steel fabrication and installation organisation. Certified to AS/NZS ISO 3834, they regularly work with high profile projects in defence, mining, oil and gas and water.

The Department of Justice and Community Safety, Corrections Victoria, won the inaugural President’s Award for an Outstanding Social Project in Welding for their VET Centre of Excellence. In 2022, Corrections Victoria expanded its VET Centre of Excellence model to deliver Fusion Welding to ISO 9606 certification standard to complement their Metal Fabrication industry at HM Prison Langi Kal Kal. Federation University delivers the training program with the support of Weld Australia and on-site prison industry staff. This model is now being expanded to seven other prison locations in the coming months. As part of the program, augmented reality training was introduced to expand the welding skills of the students in prison to meet international standards. A welding workshop sits alongside the augmented reality training room so that

The Department of Justice and Community Safety, Corrections Victoria, won the inaugural President’s Award for an Outstanding Social Project in Welding for their VET Centre of Excellence.

participants can work on projects to use and practice their welding skills in the physical as well as virtual environments. The VET Centre of Excellence model links participating students with prospective employers and pre- and post-release employment support. These connections provide people in prison with sustainable pathways to employment and support to reintegrate to society post-release.

TAFE Gippsland won the 2023 Training and Education - Organisation Award for Victoria. TAFE Gippsland is setting the benchmark for the delivery of accessible, quality vocational education and training.

Their new Port of Sale Campus is fitted with cuttingedge technology such as CNC lathes and mills. This equipment gives students the change to experience working with real-world technology and equipment. The campus has also recently added an advanced hydraulic and pneumatic training centre for both engineering and automotive students in response to industry need.

TAFE Gippsland won the 2023 Training and Education - Organisation Award for Victoria.

The Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council (TMEC) won the 2023 Training and Education - Organisation Award for Tasmania.

TMEC’s Advanced Welding Centre provides welder training and assessment utilising the latest augmented reality welding simulators. TMEC delivers a range of industry led training, providing access to flexible welder training and certification solutions for Tasmanian industry. TMEC has delivered innovative programs specifically aimed at increasing workforce participation, designed for long-term unemployed and migrants.

TMEC has also developed a foundational program for beginners, and an inclusive program to increase female participation.

Brad Menzies from Chisholm Institute won the 2023 Training and Education - Individual Teacher Award. Brad is a Senior Fabrication Teacher at Chisholm. According to his colleagues, Brad is focused on successful outcomes for his students, and builds rapport and trust with students easily.

Brad has maintained a student retention rate of 95%, demonstrating just how engaging his classes are. Brad started his career as general labour, before completing an apprenticeship in fabrication. While working at Allsteel in Dandenong, he completed his Certificate IV in Training Assessment. He has been at Chisholm since 2015.

Blair Hogan from Mallee Steel was named the 2023 Young Trades Person of the Year. Blair started his Cert II in Engineering while he was in Year 10 at high school. The following year, he started a school based apprenticeship, which he then continued full-time. Blair has won several awards, including SuniTAFEs 2023 Apprentice of the Year. He also won his category in the WorldSkills Regional Championships last year, and went on to compete at the finals in Melbourne this year. Blair’s commitment to his craft, evidenced by his rigorous selfimposed standards and his enthusiasm for mentoring the next generation, makes him a deserving winner.

Blair Hogan from Mallee Steel was named the 2023 Young Trades Person of the Year.

Mark Seiter from Furphy Engineering was named 2023 Tradesperson of the Year. Mark started a Certificate III in Engineering with Furphy Engineering in 2016. Since then, he has been promoted several times based on his exceptional workmanship, can do attitude, and people management skills. In 2019, he become a leading hand and in 2021, was offered a role in Furphy’s Quality Assurance and Control department. He went to obtain AS 1796 Certificate 7 and 10, as well as AS 2214 Welding Supervisor qualifications. This training saw him promoted again to Area Captain in Furphy’s Special Projects Area – where he works on projects that require special attention due to their difficult build process or extraordinary specifications. Mark is a valued, dependable member of the Furphy team who lives by the Furphy Engineering moto, Good. Better. Best.

Jason Davey from Marand was named the Welding Professional of the Year – Welding Coordinator in Victoria. Jason’s expertise in welding is deeply respected at Marand, where he plays a pivotal role in everything from project consultation to the execution of welds that meet stringent aerospace and defence industry standards.

Jason’s commitment to education is evident. He mentors apprentices and helps qualify tradespeople to meet exceptional welding standards, including international benchmarks in armour plate welding—a skill he honed through specialised training in Germany. With a 37-year career, Jason’s dedication to excellence in welding is not just about perfecting his craft but inspiring the next generation of welders.

Danny Patmore from Jayben Group won the 2023 Welding Professional of the Year – Welding Coordinator Award for Tasmania. Danny is building an impressive welding career built upon expertise and dedication. Starting out as an apprentice boilermaker in 2006, he now holds certifications such as IWS, IWI-B and AS2214. He is dedicated to nurturing a culture of continuous learning and skill enhancement, regularly passing on his knowledge to team members. Danny has also played a key role in introducing new technologies into Jayben Group, including weld tracking systems and a cobot.

Merrill De Gee from Structural Challenge won the 2023 Welding Professional of the Year – Welding Supervisor Award. Merrill boasts a remarkable 35 year career. He has worked on a range of iconic projects, including local projects the Docklands Stadium, the Desalination Plant and the MCG; as well as international projects like the Bangkok Airport and Singapore Casino.

As Production Manager and Welding Supervisor at Structural Challenge, he oversees production and planning, provides crucial employee training, develops weld procedures, and conducts in-house inspections, ensuring quality and efficiency. Merrill is also dedicated to lifelong learning, recently completing both AS 2214 certification, and a Certificate IV in Process Manufacturing, specialising in lean manufacturing.

Nigel brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in team management, educational programming, and project execution to his role as Project Manager, Learning Services at Weld Australia. With a career spanning over three decades, Nigel has honed his skills in various educational and technical disciplines across New Zealand and Canada, showcasing his adeptness in leading teams, developing advanced trade programs, and implementing strategic educational initiatives.

Before joining Weld Australia, Nigel served as the Team Manager for the Centre for Engineering and Trades at Wintec (Te Pūkenga) in Hamilton, New Zealand. In this role, Nigel led a teaching team through local strategic changes and adapted to shifts in the education sector at a national level. His responsibilities ranged from delivering on-site and online pre-trade programs to overseeing apprenticeship programs and diploma courses. His collaborative approach and commitment to inclusive learning experiences consistently resulted in improved student outcomes and team performance.

Nigel’s background is rich with roles that required both technical expertise and leadership finesse. He started his career as Machinist, operating drill presses, lathes and milling machines. He soon moved into leading hand and manufacturing supervisor roles, supervising tradesmen and apprentices and ensuring quality control.

In 2011, Nigel moved into education and training roles, developing blended learning apprenticeship training, and supporting students both theoretically and practically.

Nigel’s hands-on experience is complemented by his leadership positions, having supervised and mentored diverse teams, managed budgets, and led quality and risk initiatives. Nigel’s systematic and logical approach to project management, coupled with his exceptional interpersonal skills, positions him as a valuable asset to the Weld Australia team.

WEBINAR OUTLINE Conventional uses of stainless steels rely on the passive layer to prevent corrosion initiation. However, when handling aggressive chemicals, the normally passive film can be overwhelmed and there is a slow dissolution of the stainless steel. In these situations, a corrosion allowance applies to stainless steels in the same way as for carbon steels. While environment changes may be possible, it is usually alloy modifications that brings the corrosion rate within accepted bounds. Topics covered include: • • •

HUNTER CLASS FRIGATE PROGRAM PASSES PRELIMINARY DESIGN REVIEW MILESTONE BAE Systems’ Hunter Class Frigate Program has successfully completed its Preliminary Design Review (PDR). The review, which started in July, is a technical assessment that ensures the design is operationally effective and underpins the more detailed work that will now be undertaken.

$15 BILLION NATIONAL RECONSTRUCTION FUND OPEN FOR BUSINESS

More than 1,800 people are now working on the Hunter program, which is transforming Australia’s shipbuilding industry by helping build a world-class, continuous naval shipbuilding capability.

The $15 billion National Reconstruction Fund can begin investing in growing Australia’s industrial capabilities to create the secure, well-paid jobs of the future.

A celebratory event to mark the completion of the PDR was held at the Company’s Osborne shipyard to mark the milestone.

The minister for industry, Ed Husic, and the finance minister, Katy Gallagher, recently published the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation’s Investment Mandate, unlocking billions of dollars in investment finance to rebuild Australia’s competitiveness across the manufacturing value chain.

BAE Systems Australia’s managing director maritime, Craig Lockhart, said, “The Hunter Class Frigate Program has come a long way from initial head contract signing, to the acceptance of the shipyard, start of prototyping work, and commencement of the first Schedule Protection Block.”

The Investment Mandate sets out clear expectations for the NRF Corporation, including areas for investment across seven key priorities (renewables and low emission technologies; medical science; transport; value-add in agriculture, forestry and fisheries; valueadd in resources; defence capabilities and enabling technologies).

“The completion of the preliminary design review is another significant step forward for the program which is developing Australia’s sovereign industrial capability and is growing the nation’s engineering workforce.”

Martijn Wilder, chair of the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation, “The signing of this mandate is a significant milestone. The mandate provides the flexibility for the NRF Corporation to drive investment across the seven priority areas to transform the Australian economy, in line with the Government’s commitment.”

Companies from across Australia are working with BAE Systems to support the manufacture of the first batch of three Hunter class frigates.

It is anticipated the program will create and sustain more than 5,000 jobs at BAE Systems and the wider Australian defence supply chain, including up to 1,000 apprentice and graduate roles.

TAFE QUEENSLAND SKILLSTECH 2023 CSQ APPRENTICE AWARDS Fourteen high achieving Queensland apprentices were crowned Apprentice of the Year in each of their respective trade categories at the prestigious 2023 TAFE Queensland SkillsTech CSQ Apprentice Awards on 16 November at Howard Smith Wharves in Brisbane.

Now in its sixth year, the Apprentice Awards celebrate high achieving apprentices who are training at TAFE Queensland SkillsTech across 14 trade categories ranging from building and construction categories to light automotive and everything in between.

The 14 individual winners were nominated by either their employers or teachers and were selected from a pool of over 10,000 apprentices who are currently in training across the TAFE Queensland SkillsTech region on campuses including Acacia Ridge, Alexandra Hills, Bracken Ridge and Eagle Farm.

It covers the requirements of B31.3 for design, analysis, materials, fabrication, testing and inspection of process piping systems. It explores the rules for various components including fittings, connections, bends, valves and specialty components.

Facilitated by US expert, William (Bill) A. Bruce, the course includes a review and critical analysis of available thermal analysis models, including the original Battelle model, the heat sink capacity method and the PRCI thermal model for Hot Tap Welding. Course attendees will learn why these models, while useful as planning tools, should not be regarded as ‘magic bullets’ against hydrogen cracking in hot tap welding by utilising comparative examples.

The course will dispel a number of misconceptions that have developed pertaining to operating practices required to safely weld onto an in-service pipeline.

TAFE QUEENSLAND ENGINEERING AND EMERGING TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY NIGHT Weld Australia recently attended the TAFE Queensland Engineering and Emerging Technology Industry night at Eagle Farm.

It was a great night that highlighted the importance of collaboration across industry, universities and vocational education and training.

There were lots of demonstrations and opportunities to talk, including with Cornelis Van Niekerk (Business Manager, Defence Welding, Weld Australia), who was on-hand to demonstrate a welding cobot.

Our industry partners, the Australian Robotics Centre and the ARM Hub, also attended, with Centre Director, Jonathan Roberts and program co-Lead, Penny Williams answering questions from industry.

Other exhibitors included Universal Field Robots, BOC South Pacific, Micromelon Robotics, Mynt Energy Tech, NHP Electrical Engineering Products, Pure Hydrogen Corporation, AeroMech Incorporated, BuildingPoint Australia and Core Additive.

Cobots are specifically designed to share the work space with human beings, making automation easier for businesses of all sizes, particularly SMEs. Cobots are generally versatile, lightweight, require relatively little space, and are much easier to program than their industrial counterparts. They can also capture large volumes of data that can be deployed in areas such as predictive maintenance.

ENROL IN A FUSION WELDING COURSE TODAY Enrol in a fusion welding course through any Advanced Welder Training Centre below.

There are two fusion welding courses that adhere to ISO 9606 Qualification test of welders on Training.gov.au. This is the authoritative source of nationally recognised training and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). These two courses were developed in Victoria in 2018 and use augmented reality welding simulators as a key component of the training.

TRANSITION WORKERS To be awarded a certificate for the Course in Fusion Welding to AS/NZS ISO 9606 for Transition Workers, you must successfully complete seven units of competency (four core and three elective). Core units: • Simulate fusion welding processes using augmented reality equipment • Identify welding processes, safe welding practices and use of hand and power tools • Interpret and apply AS/NZS ISO 9606 for fusion welding processes • Perform fusion welding procedures to meet the procedures of ISO 9606-1 (Steels – carbon steels) EXPERIENCED WELDERS To be awarded a Statement of Attainment for the Course in Fusion Welding to AS/NZS ISO 9606 for Experienced Welders, you must successfully complete three units of competency (one core and two elective). The core unit is: Interpret and apply AS/NZS ISO 9606 for fusion welding processes.
