The
question everyone asks me is, “When are the Winter Texans coming?” I find that so funny that people don’t realize the season ‘officially’ starts November 1. but our Winter Texans start trickling down as early as September. And some never leave!

I guess I’ve immersed myself in the winter world, and I have to say it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. Sharing your stories, your accomplishments, and a whole lot of good times has kept all of us at Welcome Home RGV young at heart. I’ll admit that even though we’re younger than most of our Winter Texan friends, most of you can still run circles around us! This is my favorite time of the season, as we begin to see faces we haven’t seen in a while. This year, especially, because for some it’s been more than just the summer months since you’ve been gone. Converted Texan Couple Lead Beautification Efforts at Casa Del Sol
found the secret to staying young is staying active. The pair, originally from Iowa, have been married for 50 years and have spent the past 10 together at Donna’s Casa Del Sol Mobile Home and RV Resort, where they have gotten involved in everything and helped transform the park. Since becoming Converted Texans three years ago, the Burketts decided to help spruce up the park to make it feel more like home. “It started out back in this one spot out there. I asked park management, ‘Do you mind if I just start this little garden?’” Deborah said. “It was a wreck. We pulled all the weeds and fixed it up, and it just continued on from there.” Together, and with the help of other residents, they started a project to beautify the park. In the two years since getting started, they have planted dozens of trees and created gardens in nearly every available plot of grass. When the February freeze hit, they started again, nearly from scratch. “This is our home; it’s our park,” Dan said. “You take more pride in it when you get involved.” All the work it takes keeping the plants watered and wellmaintained has also brought them closer to their neighbors and second family.

“It’s a great way for everyone, especially the people who are new, to get involved,” Deborah said. “It’s everybody’s park. There are a certain few that come out all the time, and you get to know them a lot better.” Their latest project is starting a memorial garden, which allows people to buy and plant a rose in their loved one’s memory. Proceeds will go back into more supplies for the park. “I’m going to sell them all out,” Deborah said. “I’m hoping, anyway.” In addition to helping with the park’s landscaping, the pair oversees the shuffleboard courts and helps coordinate the Golden Age Olympics. For the Community Hall, Dan heads the Coffee Circle, keeping the space tidy and stocked, and Deborah leads the Decorating Committee. “We’re always looking for something to do,” she said. “We seem to not be able to say no, but we don’t see it as work. We just want the park to be nice and fun for everyone.” For anyone wanting to start a new project to showcase the full potential of the park, Dan advises just going for it. “Think it up, present it, then head it up,” Dan said. “You won’t get anyone heading it up unless you do it. You’ve got to start it.” •

uinta Mazatlán World Birding Center is honored to host Mycological Solutions, LLC (One Up Mushroom Products) Thursday November 4 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. for a presentation on Fungi: History, Usage, and Health Benefits as part of the Thursday Night Live series at Quinta Mazatlán. Mycological Solutions, LLC (One Up Mushroom Products) is a startup company in the Rio Grande Valley dedicated to the wonderful world of mushrooms. One Up cultivates and distributes gourmet mushrooms to local restaurants. They also manufacture mushroom-derived foods and supplement products. The One Up team is comprised of childhood friends Ramiro, Jose, and Andres. Originally founded as The Mushroom Source in 2018, the trio has grown a passion for mushrooms and the potential applications and benefits they have to offer. The Thursday-night program will focus on the fungi kingdom and their role within the environment and health benefits for humans. Mushroom products will be available for sale at Quinta Mazatlán following the program.

owned 56,000 acres and had a plan to court potential landowners from up north so they would invest in the region, which would require housing. The 56-room Spanish-ColonialRevival-style mansion was complete in 1931. But Harding’s dream was short-lived. The Great Depression brought about the repossession of what was then known as the Delta Lake Orchard Company. In the 1940s, the mansion was converted into a hotel. Well into the 1950s, she welcomed locals and visitors alike. A deep dive into local newspaper archives presents the Delta Lake Hotel as a premier socialgathering spot, alive with parties, teas, club meetings, receptions, wedding-rehearsal dinners, military banquets, study-club meetings, bridge-clubs tournament, gardenclub gatherings, fundraisers, and junior-senior high-school dances. She was a beacon, the center of the social scene, a bright white building standing three stories tall in the midst of green palm trees and wild brush land. In articles, write-ups, and news reports, she was described as “swanky,” “luxurious,” “refined,” and the “Jewel of the Delta.” That she was. There are reports she was scheduled for a huge makeover, with plans for a nine-hole golf course, an in-house physician, and a beauty parlor. But, in 1956, she was sold to the Lutheran Good Samaritan Society as a home for the old and ill. By the 1960s, her story starts to fade from prominence. Ownership changed again and again. But by the 1990s, she was mostly abandoned and neglected, only returning to the spotlight when tragedy struck. In 1995, the structure was all but gutted in a fire that burned for three days, collapsing the upper floors and obliterating the roof, windows, and interior walls. The cause and anyone responsible…unknown. And in 2007, a woman’s murder--her son convicted. The “jewel” wasn’t unfamiliar with tragedy, even in her heyday. In 1947, an employee was killed and another injured in a butane gas explosion near the employee housing. The headline of the January 28, 1948, issue of the Brownsville Herald--in big, bold lettering--read: “Valley Caught in the Grip of Cold Spell.” Included in the coverage, a report of a fire at the hotel sending 75 guests out into the cold. Four local fire departments battled the blaze, pumping water from nearby Delta Lake. The culprit--one of the two wood-burning fireplaces, causing immense damage from the southwest corner all the way up to the third floor, according to local reports.

At the time of the 1948 fire, Mission native Senator Lloyd Bentsen and his brother, Elmer, held a lien on the hotel, which had just been purchased by the Interstate Investment Company, according to a report in the Valley Morning Star. The Bentsen brothers paid $500 to the responding fire departments, and $200 was paid by the Interstate Investment Company. Today, the hotel belongs to Doris, and she to it. When Doris bought the property, she and Rich built a home reflecting the hotel’s original look, with a white exterior and a red-tiled roof. Doris tends to the property, keeping the vast lawn trimmed and neat, while the interior of the hotel is home to palm trees and overgrown grass, which she plans to tackle to reveal the floor plan beneath. “When I’ve ‘Googled’ the story,”

Doris says. “It makes it sound like a sad, dilapidated thing. It isn’t. It’s like me; I’m a little rough around the edges, but I’m a survivor, and so is this.” Doris stands a little over five feet, with a flattering pixie haircut and bright blue eyes. She is tanned from her days spent mowing. Like many Converted Texans who have given up cold winters for the warm Valley climate, her uniform is flip-flops, shorts, and a tank top. When she bought the place in 2018, she consumed its history. The dream was to create walking paths for birders, clear out the growth in and around the hotel, and remove debris. But loss and the pandemic derailed best-laid intentions. Doris’ focus now is on sharing the whole story of the hotel, with emphasis on its golden age. She
is a knowledgeable and passionate guide, pointing out details--the vestibule where bands would play, the wall where the kitchen used to be, the vault, the basement (a rarity in South Texas, and a back step, where, Doris says, if the sun hits it just right, a date is visible: March 1930. As the current caretaker and historian, when Doris uncovers an item with identifying information, such as a company name or serial number, she researches the information in hopes of adding to the hotel’s story. She mostly finds broken glass, bent metal, and charred remnants, but they are lovingly placed in small piles on window sills and in walkway corners. The most interesting thing she’s found so far, she says, is a figurine uncovered in one of the small adjacent buildings used as employee housing, also destroyed in the ’95 fire. Originally from Iowa, Doris and Rich started wintering in the Valley in 2003. She says Rich instilled in her a hard-work ethic, which is evident by the care she puts into the property. She cares for more than the grounds. Part of her daily routine includes feeding lettuce to the seven mud turtles that have taken up residence in the hotel’s abandoned swimming pool and an abandoned dog that has taken a shine to Doris. There’s a solemnity to the old hotel. Her scars may be more prominent than her beauty, but it’s not completely lost. It’s evident in her tall, standing form, in the architectural details that refuse to crumble, in the story she still tells… with her friend, Doris Taylor, by her side. •

A bit like South Texas royalty, they were one of the initial Spanish settlers to arrive in the region. The Longoria cemetery, located in Santa Maria off of Old Military Hwy. just outside of Brownsville, is home to 371 graves of several of these land-grant families and pioneers in the area’s ranching community. The stones, some 170 years old, are hauntingly beautiful, surrounded by native shrubbery and canopied beneath majestic ebony trees. •

egistration is open to join the 2022 South Texas Border Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist training class. Hidalgo, Starr and Cameron County residents over the age of 18 and Winter Texans are welcome. Texas Master Naturalist is a unique, educational, volunteer program sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas Sea Grant Program, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “Texas Master Naturalist chapters are made up of volunteers with diverse interests who are involved in myriad activities to learn about, work with, and help educate others about the special land in which we live,” said chapter sponsor, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agent Tony Reisinger. “When nature is left to itself, a unique ecosystem develops…after hundreds of years,” Reisinger said. “Today, that unique ecosystem is what Texas Master Naturalists learn about and help sustain--the Rio Grande Valley’s native habitat and the critters that depend on it.” Classes are taught by local university professors and other field experts, including those from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and U.S. Department of Agriculture. Students attend weekly virtual classes each Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. January 4 through March 22. Attendees will need internet access and a computer, iPad, or Android tablet; using a smartphone is not recommended. In addition, field trips are a required element of training that will provide unique access and learning opportunities. Field trips will be held in person following current county and departmental public-health guidelines. With social distancing, trainees will be able to join volunteer teams with other chapter members and work among local partners in activities at federal, state, and local wildlife parks, coastal naturalist programs, cities, schools, and other public entities. There are hundreds of opportunities available to volunteers, from studying ocelots and other mammals to joining cutting-edge university studies, developing public native gardens, learning about native plants and habitat and citizen science projects, bird migration and

I
t started as a thought. Then a phone call. The ultimate result: Real Estate by Welcome Home. It’s more involved than that, of course, but the idea to create a real estate company under the Welcome Home RGV umbrella had been turning over in owner Kristi Collier’s mind for years. When real estate broker Carol Welch called one day, Collier broached the subject. That conversation set the ball rolling. “It’s the perfect opportunity to really serve the 55-and-older community across the Valley,” says Welch, who has specifically focused on serving this demographic since moving to the Rio Grande Valley. Originally from North Dakota,
Welch’s career prior to real estate was as a business consultant out of Austin. As a consultant, she knew she was making a difference for organizations and their employees but didn’t get to witness the end result. She says she chose real estate, not only to make a difference but to also see the positive impact all the way through. Her focus--to make an incredibly complicated, stressful experience as smooth, as easy, and as enjoyable as possible. Welcome Home RGV has been linked to the Winter Texan community for 14 years. “For Kristi, it’s always been about helping and connecting people,”
says Curt Riester. “For [Welcome Home RGV], as a real estate agency-it just made sense.” Riester recently completed 180 hours of coursework and subsequent testing and is officially a real estate agent, and Collier is well on her way. “We can really walk our clients through the whole journey,” says Collier. “If they want to rent for a while or are ready to buy, we can help them with all of it.” Real Estate by Welcome Home is qualified to manage rentals, real property, and mobile home sales. cappella quintet ReVoiced is bringing its famed signature sound, powerful stage presence, and unique arrangements of familiar classics to Christian Fellowship Church, 901 N. Loop 499 in Harlingen Tuesday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m. “…A stellar performance that our audience loved.” ~Macomb Center, Clinton Township, Michigan Founded in 2012, ReVoiced began with the simple goal of “revoice-ing” hits from yesterday and today. Paired with their incomparable vocal sound and unmatched showmanship, that goal quickly pivoted toward using their musical talents to uplift and inspire listeners to strive for excellence within their own life endeavors. The group has an impressive catalogue of vocal accolades, including being featured on American Idol and NBC’s The Sing Off and performing with artists like Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, Andy Williams, Josh Groban, and more. T
he Texas Music Scene is a weekly, nationally syndicated music TV series that visits different locations in the Lone Star State and spotlights several Texan musicians. They interview all kinds of artists, ranging from fresh new talent to long-time, established groups. As long as you perform within Texas and have that Americana spirit, you might be able to catch their eye. This season, they visited South Padre Island, and host Jack Ingram came with his film crew to host some bayside concerts so they could film and meet some of the locals’ favorite artists. Their first concert occurred at LongBoard Bar and Grill with Shinyribs and The Whites of Texas. These two groups are talented performers with years of experience under their belts. Shinyribs, an Austin-based group with 10 members, tour all of Texas with their melting-pot-mix of music, ranging from Texas blues to R&B funk. The Whites of Texas is a local group, with Robby and Danielle White spreading their love throughout SPI, performing at several venues every week. The second concert occurred at Tequila Sunset with Kelley Mickwee,
Nathan Hubble, and Dr. Zog. Kelley Mickwee is one of Shinyribs’ members, but she also performs independently. Nathan Hubble is another local favorite with his own variety of pop, soul, and rock. Dr. Zog brings his unique style of zydeco music, which is a style of rhythm and blues mixed with the indigenous music of Louisiana. All of these artists put on great shows for the public. For those of you who could not make it, The Texas Music Scene will air the South Padre Island episode once they finish filming for the season. ow! We announced our firstever Make-Along last year, and y’all flew with it. What a fun time we are all having with our bird-themed projects every month. It’s been a fun time of creation and giving, all wrapped into one. As people flock to the RGV to enjoy the many species of birds here throughout the year, it just seemed to be a good fit for our theme. Also, on a cool morning, sitting on the back patio of the shop, you may have one of the beauties flit through and join you for a little Sit-n-Knit time. These birds are as beautiful and creatively made as y’all are/ It has been fun every month to see the
creativity of projects that come in to our Donation Chest, and the year isn’t over yet. Every month, you can find our next bird we introduce. Join us and make your favorite project, like a hat, scarf, blanket, or shawl for our Donation Chest. You are welcome to purchase your yarn here (which supports the mission, too), or dive into your own stash and find something fun that works with the theme. Texas has always been known for high-quality produce, especially citrus, but with stores and stands bursting at the seams with so many other kinds of fruits, it’s hard to imagine trying them all. Strawberries are a universal favorite among young and old alike. And watermelon… what’s not to like? Lifelong foodie, restaurant reviewer, cooking teacher, and summer Iowan, Sandy Olson spends the Winter-Texan season at Palm Shadows RV Park in Donna. This season, Sandy will be sharing recipes to help readers enjoy the abundance of delicious fruits we find in our local markets. Sandy claims she’s been “a bit fruity” since childhood. Watermelon Strawberry Salad • 4 cups cubed, seedless watermelon • 2 cups chopped, fresh strawberries • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil • 1 cup crumbled feta cheese In a large bowl, combine the strawberries and melon, along with any juice from chopping. In a small bowl, mix the lemon juice and the oil to make a light dressing. Sprinkle the dressing on top of the fruit and very gently mix together. Add the feta and gently toss and combine again. Good chilled or at room temperature. •

ryn Reddell Wingert, a member of the Welcome Home RGV team, follows Kitchen Wrangler Melissa Guerra on social media. Last month, she saw Melissa’s post about Lime Cooler Cookies and knew they would be perfect for Welcome Home Winter Texan’s season of “fruity” recipes. We reached out to Melissa for permission to publish her recipe, and she immediately said yes. (Thanks, Melissa!) Melissa Guerra is an 8th generation Texan, born and raised on a working cattle ranch in South Texas. She is a self-taught culinary expert and food historian, specializing in the food ways of the American continent, especially Texas regional, Mexican, and Latin American cuisine. Her second cookbook, Dishes from the Wild Horse Desert: Norteño Cuisine of South Texas, was a finalist for a James Beard Award in the category of Foods of the Americas
and for an International Association of Culinary Professionals award in the same category. The Texas Provincial Kitchen was her first cookbook and was self -published. Container Vegetable Gardening Special to Welcome Home RGV
W
ishing you could grow your own vegetables but have no room? November 13, the Master Gardeners will show you how to grow all the vegetables in pots you need. All you need is a few pots, a place where they will get at least six hours of sun, and some tender-loving care. Growing vegetables in a container is actually easier than growing them in the ground. Pots will grow fewer weeds, control the water and fertilizer, and allow you to control those pesky insects. This workshop will teach you to make your own potting soil to help reduce the cost of purchasing readymade potting soil. You will also learn how to determine how many plants a particular pot will let you grow.
The Container Vegetable Gardening workshop will be held November 13. The cost is $10.00, and you will receive your own potted garden to take home. The cost is payable in advance, and space is limited, so early registration is recommended. All of the Deep South Texas Master Gardeners’ workshops are held at our educational garden, located at 509 E. Prep Time: 10 minutes :: Cook Time: 10 minutes :: Total Time: 20 minutes Yield: 40 cookies • 1 stick butter, softened • ¼ cup powdered sugar • 2 cups cake flour
• ½ cup vegetable shortening • 2 tsp. vanilla extract • 1 cup pecans, chopped
Topping: • 1 Tbsp. lime juice powder • ½ cup powdered sugar (62g) Heat your oven to 400°F. Place the butter, vegetable shortening, powdered sugar, and vanilla in a large bowl and cream together using a hand mixer. Stir in the flour and pecans. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes. Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, sift together the topping mixture of powdered lime juice powder and powdered sugar. Stir to combine well and then sift again. Set aside. Divide the dough into ½ oz. pieces and roll into balls. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from the baking sheet and place on a cooling rack. Place a clean baking pan under the cooling rack to catch the crumbs and powdered sugar. Using a mesh sifter, sift the powdered sugar mixture over the top of the warm cookies and allow to cool completely. NOTES Once the cookies are completely cool, you can roll them again in powdered sugar for an extra-thick coating. Simply roll in the powdered sugar that has collected in the pan underneath the cooling rack. Store in an airtight container. •

There are many languages and voices on this fifth orb from the sun we call earth. Hearing the joined voices of choirs singing together makes a confirmation about practice with musical knowledge. The same can be said watching your favorite team score; the stadium cheers in one thundering voice. There are countless examples of many hearts and a singular voice, but the thought of the world being in one voice--or to put it another way, one accord--is what Jesus seeks for the world. Sometimes, because of the conflict in our world, there are many voices of anger, concern, sorrow, happiness, and many more emotions covering the gamut of human feelings, both positive and negative. So, is there a way--any way--for many voices to become one heart? Earth has a population of over 7.2 billion people. To be one voice seems more than impossible. The thought of a unified world with many voices joining together, becoming one heartbeat, is like traveling around the globe without a roadmap and expecting to arrive precisely where you intended, on time, rested, and relaxed. The Bible records the following in Acts 4:24: “When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. ‘Sovereign Lord,’ they said, ‘you have made the heavens and the earth and the sea.’” Thinking about that statement and then 1 Timothy 2:1, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people,” and finally, 1 Timothy 4:5 reads, “because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.”

The waterway is called Resaca de los Cuates, and it winds northeast to southwest through Cameron County. According to the Texas State Historical Association (tshaonline.org), Cuates means “twins” or “close friends.”•

There really isn’t much of a language barrier, as their body language illustrates most of the story. “It’s the best night of entertainment your money can buy,” said Ignacio Reyes of Mission. “And most events are BYOB, making it even better.” Reyes and his family have been following different performers in the RGV since he was a child. They are big fans of Lucha Squad. That’s not surprising since it is considered to be the most popular sport after soccer in Latin America. It’s no wonder that here in the Rio Grande Valley, you can find some of the most entertaining cast of Lucha Libres on the planet. The tradition is so embedded in the RGV that many of the entertainers are third and fourth generations deep. Typically, you can expect a few matches at each event, with a good guy and a bad guy, and the crowd goes nuts for both. Their persona is typically found in the luchador’s mask, reflecting the power of different things, including animals, spirits, and legends.
