away we go! I can’t tell you how excited we are about this season, especially now that the borders will be open and our Canadian friends will be able to join us! I’ve spent the last week visiting with so many of you, from our volunteers who have made their way south to the activity directors we work with to the resort managers who we’ve been in contact with all summer long. There is one thing we all agree on, and that’s that this will be a wonderful season!
Sure, it will look a little different, but I think we all feel that different is better than not at all! As you get back into the swing of things, please remember that not everyone is at the same comfort level, when it comes to gatherings. Let’s be compassionate with those around us and be thankful that although things might be different than what we’re used to, it sure as heck beats shoveling snow! • We’re just connecting the dots,

n 1987, Kristy Meyer’s parents gifted her a cruise as a high-schoolgraduation gift. The rest, as they say, is history. That initial cruise sparked a passion-a calling, really--setting her on a voyage as a dedicated travel agent. Fast forward to present day, “And now, here I am!” says Meyer as she leads the Travel by Welcome Home division of Welcome Home RGV.

Brings Summer Activities to Donna Resort things about the RGV, she and her husband skipped past the Winter Texan phase and moved down immediately upon retiring. While they had never before visited, her parents have spent years as Winter Texans at Donna’s Bit-O-Heaven RV & Mobile Home Resort, with her mother serving as the activity director. “My dad just had this idea, so we said, ‘Sure! We’ll move down there,’” Budde said. “Our kids are all grown, so we just packed everything up and down we came. We weren’t really sure what to expect; we’ve just been rolling with it.” Though Donna is now her full-time home, Budde’s parents still return to New Hampshire every summer. When that time rolled around, Budde was left wondering what to do in the park for fun. So she picked up as the summer activity director. “We have around 200 full-time, year-round residents, so I thought it would be a good idea to try to give them something to do,” Budde said. “It kind of exploded into this thing now where we’re having multiple dances every week, happy hours, build-your-own taco bars, and a doggy derby.” Prior to her retirement, she worked as a social media director and event coordinator, making this new role a comfortable transition. Since starting in April, Budde’s introduced a variety of new activities, gauging the residents’ interests through

Facebook polls. “I try to keep it fresh, keep it fun, and come up with new things,” Budde said. “Folks have been really receptive to it and just grateful to have something to do.” She typically has events going on four days a week, keeping her busier than she was before she retired… not that she minds. The Valley has given her a warm welcome. “It was really amazing. Another local activity director called me to talk about our happy hours so they wouldn’t conflict and our residents could enjoy one another’s,” Budde said. “I thought that was really outstanding, professional, and courteous. That just made me feel that much better about being an activity director here and working with other parks.” When her parents return and her mother, Susan, resumes the role, Budde will shadow her and serve as assistant activity director. The plan is for her to eventually take over, once her mother decides to retire (which she promises won’t be for at least another five years). “I’m juggling 100 to 200 people at the very most for any event,” she said. “She’s working with 300, 400, even 500 people. There’s still a lot for me to learn. I’m excited we’ll get to have a regular season this year because last year was radically different. So it’ll be really nice to expand our events and give people a safe way to get together and have fun.” •

hen the Valley Symphony Orchestra takes the stage for their 70th anniversary season premiere, it will have been 21 months--more than 650 days--since the entire orchestra has performed together. Effectively shut down in the wake of Covid-19, it is the longest the ensemble has ever gone without performing since its founding in 1952. “We know now that we cannot take any of this for granted,” said Maestro Peter Dabrowski. “And knowing this adds another layer of excitement and reverence to the music.” The Symphony will perform Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, a masterful staple of the Symphonic repertoire. The piece is also known as the New World Symphony, and Dvořák wrote it to herald the coming of a new era, a most appropriate selection for the beginning of this season. The Symphony was composed in 1893 while Dvořák was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America and premiered in New York City December 16, 1893. The work is among the most popular and most frequently performed symphonies around the world and weaves together melodies from Native American music and traditional African American spiritual songs. It has been said that Dvořák was inspired by the “wide open spaces” of America, such as prairies he may
have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. “Between this being our 70th year as an ensemble and it also being our return to live performance, the energy is high,” said Katy Coy, executive director. “We are so grateful that the community sustained us so well through last year and also that they are ready to come back out and safely enjoy one of the most beautiful evenings the RGV has to offer.” The November 12 performance is the first of a five-concert masterworks series, which also includes Valley favorites, such as the holiday A Touch of Frost concert December 10 and Star Wars April 29, as well as a March 25 70th anniversary celebration concert featuring cellist Daniel Saenz, a McAllen native. Subscriptions for the five-concert series begin at $170, and single tickets for every concert start at $25. If you have a budget and an idea of where and when you would like to travel, Meyer can take it from there. “You tell me--beach, mountains, skiing, gambling…” she goes on, “…Mexico, historic Mexico or beach, take the grandkids to Disney World…” With a little direction, Meyer makes it happen. “It was awesome, totally awesome,” says Cheryl Matthews. “All we had to do was show up!” Meyer coordinated an Alaskan cruise for Matthews and her family. Matthews readily gives Meyer credit for helping her check Alaska off her bucket list. “The plane flights were taken care of, and Royal Caribbean picked us up. It was awesome,” she reiterates. Matthews and her husband sold their house in 1988, bought a Fifth Wheel, and hit the road for five years. Within the first year as RVers, they had visited 17 states. Originally from Michigan, the couple is settling into life as Converted Texans in Sun Valley Village in Harlingen. Traveling is still part of their lifestyle. The couple is booked on the 2022 Cruise with Kristi early next year. As an avid scrapbooker, Matthews, with the help of her family, garnered hundreds of photos from their Alaskan adventure. After listing the abundant wildlife they encountered,

including humpback and killer whales, sea otters, sea lions, and eagles, Matthews says with a sigh, “It was the trip of a lifetime.” Meyer says this is the best part about her job, the positive feedback from travelers. She enjoys when they share their experiences and the joy it brought them. “Just knowing that someone has saved up a lifetime and I made their dream come true or helped with a bucket list trip. I love making people happy.” It’s not always easy to make those dream trips come true, but Meyer’s focus is always on meeting the needs of her clients. Linda Duval of Alamo Country Club is a member of an RV
club. The group regularly partakes in camping trips but decided to dive into a new adventure, a trip to Cabo San Lucas off the Pacific coast of Mexico. Meyer helped facilitate the trip. “She had to coordinate a group from Alamo and Missouri. It worked perfectly!” says Duval Duval, also a Converted Texan, has been traveling by RV since 1985, and the Rio Grande Valley has been a stopping point--and now home base--ever since. Taking advantage of the warmer climate was literally prescribed by her husband’s doctor to benefit his health at the time. While Duval contemplates her
next adventure, she raves about the Valley. “We couldn’t imagine finding some place better than the Rio Grande Valley!” The travel industry has definitely changed in the past year and a half, but Meyer expertly navigates the rules of the current landscape on a daily basis. “The rules change, sometimes daily. It’s my job to keep up with that,” she says, making things that much easier for her clients. Matthews recently shared on a travel-related post, “I went on a cruise to Alaska. I was impressed with all their protocols, and I felt very safe.” •

South Padre Island Welcomes its Newest Resident Special to Welcome Home RGV
O
ur newest resident has arrived to South Padre Island and is ready to meet the community. Sea Turtle Inc. has adopted a new loggerhead turtle named Poppy, the newest resident in their facility. The term “resident” is used for sea turtles that are not able to be released back into the wild due to injury or disability that deems them unsuitable for life in the wild. Poppy was a victim of a boat strike that caused her to lose her left rear flipper and damaged her shell, causing her to develop “bubble butt.” This means her shell was damaged in a way that causes her rear to float upwards, interferes with her ability to dive down to forage for food, and results in her floating upwards, making her more susceptible to future boat strikes. To counter this, three weights have been attached to the rear end of her shell, balancing out her weight to allow her to swim better. Visitors are welcome to come and see Poppy in her new home and learn more about the purpose of Sea Turtle Inc. Sea Turtle Inc.’s mission is the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of any injured sea turtles that arrive at South Padre Island. They also work to educate the public about the endangered sea turtles and
conservation efforts that are ongoing to help all marine life. Visitors are encouraged to come and explore Sea Turtle Inc with self-guided tours between their two facilities or attend their educational presentations that have more information about their efforts. Sea Turtle Inc. is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. except Mondays. Sea Turtle Inc. is a nonprofit organization, its efforts funded primarily by donations. Dobie Dichos: Campfires, Chili con Carne, and the Words of J. Frank Dobie Special to Welcome Home RGV
D
obie Dichos: Campfires, Chili con Carne, and the Words of J. Frank Dobie started in 2011 at the suggestion of Dobie Dichos author William Sibley and via the instigation of former George West Storyfest Executive Director Mary Margaret Campbell. The yearly event, held on the first Friday in November, honors Live Oak County’s most famous son, J. Frank Dobie, and celebrates Dobie’s works and contributions to literature, folklore, and storytelling. Invited Texas writers, authors, and storytellers read from--or tell--stories from the works of J. Frank Dobie on the grounds of the Historic Oakville Jail, located in Oakville, Texas, on IH37 in Live Oak County (between Three Rivers and George West). Prior to the program, a meal of chili con carne, pan de campo, and dessert is served to those who purchase the program AND meal ticket. Tickets for the program only are also available. Beer and water are available. During the meal, an acoustic musician entertains the audience. This year, we are adding a Social Hour following the program for attendees to browse the books available for purchase and visit with the participants as they enjoy complimentary wine and desserts. The event is BYOLC: Bring Your Own Lawn Chair. Attendees set up their lawn chairs under the mesquite trees and stars on the grounds of Live Oak County’s first courthouse, with the original jail just left of the outdoor stage, a 1940s pickup truck converted to a stage for the event. The program begins as the sun sets. A campfire is lit, and attendees enjoy Dobie’s contributions as read or told by the participants on stage. For the first nine years, Dobie Dichos was presented by George West Storyfest Association, Inc. as

uinta Mazatlán will celebrate Texas Native Plant Week Thursday, October 21, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Join us for an opportunity to learn, appreciate, and cultivate native plants with a presentation by John Brush and a plant sale by Mike Heep. In 2009, the Texas Legislature officially designated the third week of October as Texas Native Plant Week in efforts to conserve and recognize the importance of native plants and their role in the environment. A native plant is one that has “developed over a period of time (hundreds or thousands of years) in a particular region or ecosystem.” Native plants have adapted to survive their environment and have developed mutually beneficial symbiotic relationships with the local wildlife. Native plants have the potential to offer ecological services that benefit humans, animals, and even the landscape itself. Native plants attract a diversity of wildlife, support a healthy and more sustainable ecosystem, require less
water, reduce strain on the local water supply, add aesthetic beauty, and give character and a sense of place to a region. The more we know and understand our native plants, the better we can help our environment. The nature that surrounds us tells a story of the land and its people from a long time ago. Each region has a special imprint in the form of the type of flowers, shrubs, and trees that can be found there. The Rio Grande Valley is one of the most biologically diverse regions in the nation, with rare finds that can only be seen here. oin us for a fun Halloween adventure at Quinta Mazatlán’s 2nd annual Sticks & Bones Trail, sponsored by Drs. Gerling and Ryan of the McAllen Orthodontic Group. The Halloween Day Party in the Park will be Saturday, October 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is free with Park admission and will feature over 30 art skeleton installations on the trail, live music, food and crafts! Children can participate in activities, such as crafting a skeleton hand and making a mask. Don’t worry about food and entertainment because live performances from local artists and Randerie’s food truck will be there to help curb everyone’s appetite after you’re done shopping with our amazing vendors. The quarter-mile Sticks & Bones Trail will start with tips and advice on all things bones, from what they are to how to strengthen them. Enjoy meeting the vertebrate families featuring reptiles, amphibians, mammals, fish, and birds. All children will receive a free Sticks & Bones educational worksheet. Among the community-favorite installations come new features, such as the Ofrenda Exhibit, paying respect to South Texas animals. The outdoor altar will feature a collection
of plants and animal objects to honor the memory of animals that have gone extinct. Another outdoor exhibit features the six-foot-long serpent from Tim Burton’s film Beetlejuice. There will be so much to see and so much to take pictures of, so snap a selfie with any of the installations or at our pumpkin patch photo-op. Don’t forget to tag us @QuintaMazatlan! MOSTHistory Hosts 19th Annual Día de los Muertos Event

useum of South Texas History presents Día de los Muertos: Recuerdos y Ofrendas, an event that showcases regional music, dance, educational activities, and heritage from 4:00 - 10:00 p.m. Saturday, October 30. This year marks the 19th annual Día de los Muertos event, featuring a partnership with H-E-B and the community at large. Día de los Muertos: Recuerdos y Ofrendas celebrates traditions of religious and spiritual worship based on oral and written histories and memories. The centerpiece of this event is the
Community Altar Exhibit featured in the museum’s Courtyard Gallery. The exhibit displays communitybuilt altars that share stories and memories and honor the lives of the dearly departed. The exhibit opens Saturday, October 23, and closes Sunday, November 7. Community partner H-E-B will host free admission during the weekends of October 23 - 24 and November 6 7. The Museum of South Texas History is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It is located in downtown Edinburg at 200 N. Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square. Founded in 1967 as the Hidalgo County Historical Museum in the 1910 Hidalgo County Jail, the museum has grown over the decades, through a series of expansions, to occupy a full city block. I
t’s that time of year when those whose blood type is pumpkin spice finally get to celebrate their season. If you’re looking for like-minded, pumpkin-lovin’ folks, you’ll find them--along with all things Halloween and fall--at the T-Ranch in La Feria. This 75-acre working cattle ranch in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley is celebrating its fourth year as the self-proclaimed “Biggest Pumpkin Patch in South Texas.” So they are bringing out all the local favorites, including the petting zoo, hay maze, hay mountain, and slide. All are included with the price of admission and are favorites of kids for obvious reasons, but adults enjoy finding a soft corner to sit and relax, as well. The real show stopper for all ages is the pumpkin house. It’s exactly as it sounds, a house frame filled with pumpkins, perfect for a moment in the shade and even more perfect for a special photo with family and friends. In fact, there’s no shortage of photo-perfect moments waiting for your camera, photo album, or Instagram. The property is nestled next to a National Wildlife Refuge, providing a picturesque backdrop. The natural beauty juxtaposed with the ranch’s colorful fall setting is one to behold. Along the lake, you’ll find a perfect quiet spot to take it all in. There are a number of cozy, comfortable seating
spots, some complete with pillows and blankets for that delicate fall breeze that promises to show-up. Follow the scent of pumpkin spice and coffee, and you’ll stumble into their fall coffee shop, where they sell a few tasty goodies on site, along with merchandise to get you and yours in that autumn mood. If you like to dance, be sure to check their online calendar, and you’ll find several dates this season featuring live music. On your way home, you’ll want to stop into the heart of La Feria where historic buildings await, transporting you back in time. One of the most impressive is the old bank, est. 1927, that stands on the main corner. Across the street, you’ll find the little town’s impressive veteran’s memorial that includes several benches paying tribute to locals, many honoring several generations from the same family. At the end of the monument’s brick path, you’ll get a nice view of the historic town and notice several murals showcasing their local team, proving “Lion’s Pride” runs deep. One such mural is on the window of the La Feria Cafe. While the mural may be what draws you in, it’s their famous enchiladas that will keep you coming back. I’d end this with a Halloween pun, but that’s too corny. Happy Halloween! •

T
he City of McAllen’s proximity to Mexico allows for some incredible travel opportunities. The City and McAllen International Airport (MFE) welcome opportunities to bridge the gap between the U.S. and Mexico by offering exciting direct- and extended-service options. International service includes direct flights to Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara with extended service to San Luis Potosi, Puerto Vallarta, Aguascalientes, and Torreon via Aeromar. These destinations don’t just happen. It’s quite the undertaking--both for the airport and the city--to “land” additional destinations to their service line-up. The airport’s business development manager, Laurie Pulido, and international business manager, Daniela Plata, contribute to the extensive effort that takes place behind the scenes. Pulido shares how the airport director, Elizabeth Suarez, develops proposals and works closely with City Manager Roy Rodriguez to navigate the opportunities, along with the support of the city commission. “It takes a significant amount of support from the city,” Pulido says. “Our director helps lead the development efforts, and we provide support in marketing and business development once it’s landed.” As a result of the substantial amount of effort that goes on behind the scenes to incorporate a new destination, service out of McAllen has been expanding. Pulido says it’s not typical to grow so quickly. “We started with six stops prepandemic…to nine non-stop and four extended-service options,” she says. In addition to the international service, the McAllen International Airport continues to offer non-stop flights to Dallas, Houston, and Las Vegas, with seasonal domestic flights to Los Angeles, Orlando, and Nashville. The McAllen International Airport not only connects travelers to exciting destinations across the country and Mexico but also right here in the Rio Grande Valley with the recent addition of a pilot shuttle program, Destination Connect, with service to South Padre Island. “This shuttle service, our travelers have been demanding,” says Plata. The original idea was for international travelers, but, Pulido shares, it really serves a variety of travelers.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS Harlingen Concert Association Prepares for First Concert of the 2021-2022 Season

he first Harlingen Concert Association (HCA) concert of the season is ReVoiced, a NewYork-based vocal group that has captivated audiences from Broadway to national television appearances. ReVoiced’s members are five charismatic entertainers bringing their distinctive personalities together, creating an unforgettable vocal experience. The ReVoiced concert is set for Tuesday, November 16. What began as a mere hobby has since exploded into an international sensation. Founded in 2012, ReVoiced began with the simple goal of “re-voicing” hits from yesterday and today. Paired with their incomparable vocal sound and unmatched showmanship, that goal quickly pivoted toward using their musical talent to uplift and inspire listeners to strive for excellence within their own life endeavors. The ReVoiced quintet will keep your “ears on their toes” and will have the audience enthralled while experiencing their band-withoutinstruments sound. More than just five guys with microphones, this musical group will embody the full sound of a band using only their five voices. Not relying solely on smooth vocals, ReVoiced brings professional showmanship, audience interaction, and sleek sophistication to the stage. Through their music and ability to bring communities together, the group has been able to raise thousands of dollars for
students and music-education programs across the United States since their inception. Only scratching the surface, ReVoiced also proudly serves as ambassadors for Anthony Kennedy Shriver and Best Buddies International as they promote movements that create opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID). One of ReVoiced’s proudest moments was being chosen by the United States Government to represent it overseas as part of the State-Department-run program American Music Abroad. The HCA concert-season performances are planned for the Harlingen Christian Fellowship Church (CFC) Auditorium, 901 N. Loop 499. The entire facility is one level and has ample parking in a spacious, private parking lot. elcome back. Winter Texans! The Deep South Texas Master Gardeners will be holding their fall plant sale October 23 from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will take place at the educational garden, located at 509 E. Earling Road in San Juan. We will have a large variety of landscaping and house plants, cacti, succulents, Texas superstars, and native plants for sale. There will also be fruit trees, such as fig, pink and white guava, and, of course, banana, as well as some native trees. There will be decorative trees, including jacaranda, flamboyant, kapok, and moringa available. All of our plants
have been lovingly cared for over the last several months and will provide your home with some of the best landscaping in the Valley. There will be informational booths, where our members will answer all of your questions about composting, herbs, rainwater harvesting, and making your own rain barrels. Rain barrels will be available for sale: 30-gallon barrels are $30.00 and 55-gallon barrels are $55.00. Those attending the event may purchase raffle tickets for $1.00 each for a chance to win a decorative rain barrel. See you there! •

Centered outside the entrance is a large royal blue, geometric sculpture by world-renowned Mexican artist Sebastian, greeting travelers coming and going. Inside, an art gallery awaits. Currently on exhibit, El Salvador Bicentenario. Brought to MFE in partnership with the Consulate of El Salvador, this exhibit is a collection of photographs by artists Fabio
and Bruno Jimenez, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The airport will host the induction of a Dia de los Muertos altar on October 27, in conjunction with the Consulate of Mexico. The altar and photo exhibition will be on display through November 10. Both exhibits are free of charge. Pulido and Plata relay the sense that there is a strong, vested interest in the relationship between Mexico and the City of McAllen, with the McAllen International Airport providing opportunities for visitors to experience all McAllen has to offer and for locals to encounter the beauty of Mexico. •

If You Could Go Back in Time, • What Would You Tell Yourself? •
Have you ever made a wrong turn
in your RV? Have you ever wished you could go back in time and change something you said or did? Here is something to think about: If you could go back in time, knowing what you know now, what would you tell your fledgling self? What would you change? What direction, turn, or different road would you decide to take? Although all of our memories and experiences shape who we are today, and the past cannot be changed, we can work on today and tomorrow. Many times, we don’t--or cannot-forgive ourselves for what we have done in the past, but Jesus already has. The history is forgotten “as far as the east is from the west.” The Apostle Peter said he would never deny Christ (and so stated that during the Last Supper), yet he denied Him not once, but three times! (Matt 26:69-75). Imagine Peter’s feelings of regret, sorrow, and the abject emotion of rejecting the one who was sent to teach and saves him and the world. Grilled Shrimp and Jicama Slaw Dinner Submitted by Randy Hoelscher, The Border Cook
Last week we took the RV and spent four nights at Isla Balance Park, basking in the beautiful weather and warm surf. Of course we made a side trip to the shrimp basin and picked up some wonderful Gulf shrimp. We made shrimp skewers, sometimes called margarita shrimp, except we did not have any tequila on hand, and it is optional in the recipe. We completed dinner with jicama slaw, a simple combo to prepare. For the grilled shrimp: • 1 lb. large shrimp – peeled and deveined • 1/3 C. extra virgin olive oil • 2 large garlic cloves – chopped • ½ small jalapeño pepper – seeded and deveined – chopped • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar or honey • 1 tsp. smoked paprika • 1 tsp. chili powder • 1 tsp. cumin • 1 tsp. kosher salt • ½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper • 1 Tbsp. tequila (optional) • Thin slices of fresh lime to place between shrimp – as required • Chopped fresh cilantro • Lime wedges to squeeze over shrimp Place cleaned shrimp in a bowl. Place ingredients from olive oil to black pepper in a tall jar and use an immersion blender to process until there are no sizeable pieces. You can also use a blender or food processor. Pour marinade over shrimp and refrigerate for 2 - 3 hours, stirring occasionally. If adding tequila, drizzle over the shrimp while in the marinade. Thread shrimp on skewers with a folded thin lime slice between shrimp, and grill over medium high heat for 2-3 minutes per side, until the shrimp are pink and cooked through. Serve with a squeeze of lime juice and a sprinkle of chopped fresh cilantro.
A perfect side dish for the shrimp is a jicama slaw, which is easy and quick to make. For the slaw: • 1 medium jicama • ¼ head cabbage (regular or red) • 1 large carrot • 1 Tbsp. olive oil • Juice of 1 lime • ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro • 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar • ¼ t. salt • Sesame seeds – to taste Shred the cabbage, jamaica, and carrot in a food processor. Combine the oil, lime juice. cilantro, vinegar, and salt and pour over the slaw. Sprinkle with sesame seeds to taste •

Serves 1 – 2 • 5-6 beets (steamed and quartered) • 5 oz. arugula • ½ Tbsp. olive oil • Salt and pepper, to taste
• 4 oz. goat cheese, crumbled • 1 large grapefruit (segmented) • Juice of 1 lemon • Honey (for drizzling)
Dress arugula with olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Add beets, goat cheese, and grapefruit. Sprinkle with a bit more salt and pepper, and drizzle with honey.
