New things here, there, and everywhere! I love hearing all about new activities in the parks. It seems like once one park institute change, many others follow. That’s how pickleball took off, then dog parks, then RC tracks. It will be fun to see how many parks have disc golf over the next few years!

Change is good for the soul, in my opinion. We always try to keep things changing at Welcome Home RGV. New divisions, new procedures, and new products are what keep us on our toes. The most recent change for us is the addition of our real estate division. I’m very excited! f you want to ruin a good walk, play disc golf!” That’s how Otis Cook of Tropic Star RV Resort in Pharr jokingly referred to the new activity offered at the resort. Recently, when the Activity Department was looking for new things to do at the park, Otis recommended disc golf. “We learned it back home and enjoyed it,” he said. ‘Back home’ is Lubbock for Otis and his wife, Lynn, who gathered a small group of neighbors at the park golf course on a particularly windy day.
The goal of disc golf is to land a disc in the elevated basket using the fewest number of throws.

Harlingen Duo Leads Clothing, Shoe Collection for Local Students
Giving
back comes as second nature for Sharon Bargel and Jan Walter, residents of Harlingen’s Paradise Park. When it was announced in 2020 the Park wouldn’t be able to play its usual role in the residents’ annual holiday project--giving back-due to COVID-19, Bargel decided to step up. “I had heard of a clothing closet the local school district operates here and how they have a need for winter coats and things like that, so I checked into what it was,” said Bargel, who is a Converted Texan from Minnesota. Once she learned of the huge need, she spread the word to her neighbors and helped collect hundreds of articles of clothing, making room to store them in her spare bedroom. “It was such a success even with so many people not being here,” she said. Walter is one of the Winter Texans who had to miss the 2020-2021 season, disrupting her nineteenth annual trek from Illinois. But once she returned, she got right on board with the initiative; Bargel needed extra help to continue. “They’re very good to us when we go out in the community,” she said.

“And for five months, this is our home. We give back at home, so why wouldn’t we do the same here?” Together, and with additional support from the Park, they have been able to increase donations, and in one month collected more than 800 items, including apparel, undergarments, and shoes. “These are just basic things that students in the community are needing,” Walter said. “And they need nice things in order to feel good about themselves. It affects how they feel, how they study--it’s all combined.” Bargel adds it’s as beneficial for the Park as it is for the children, and witnessing her Park family come together and show generosity is reward enough for her. “All of us feel so fortunate to be here,” she said. “At our ages, we don’t need a lot ourselves. If we can benefit somebody else, it’s nice. It’s just a good thing to do.” After the collection period closed, volunteers got together to help sort the items and delivered them to Harlingen CISD in early January. The community closet is for any student in the district, from K-5 to 12th grade. •

he Rio Grande Valley is filled with fun and exciting things to do. Each month, the Ladies of La Floresta venture out to learn more about the Valley and its people. Past outings included museums, holiday displays, an art gallery, and a boot factory. It also gives the ladies an opportunity to check out the many excellent restaurants available in the area. In December, the Ladies of La Floresta toured Mozna Chocolate in Hidalgo. As you enter the factory, the smell of chocolate fills the air. We couldn’t wait for the taste testing, but first we learned about the process of converting the cacao beans to smooth, rich, dark chocolate and the health benefits of this chocolate. Then we each were able to create our own specialized chocolate bar. Following the tour, we had lunch

ollecting can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House has been happening at La Floresta Park in Mercedes for many years. This year, Rodger and Jean Vanderville from Manistique, Michigan, arrived at La Floresta Park with over 50 pounds of tabs collected from family and friends in their hometown. These tabs were combined with some collected at La Floresta Park, and a total of about 68,740 individual tabs were taken to the Ronald McDonald House in Corpus Christi. The money from can tabs adds up and becomes a valuable donation to the Ronald McDonald House.
Ronald McDonald Houses are located near children’s hospitals. Their mission is to provide a place for families who are far from home to stay so they can focus on the health of their children. They also assist families with travel and other expenses. Even tabs make a difference. Don’t throw them away. •

Sunday Drive to San Benito

rive through the Rio Grande Valley, and you’re sure to spot one of its most iconic water towers in San Benito, Home of Freddy Fender. Don’t stop there. Drop in and explore a wealth of fascinating history tucked away. Their downtown still has that quaint old feel that so many of our downtowns possess. The buildings, more than 100 years old, are painted everything from fuchsia pink to royal blue and are still home to restaurants, bakeries, hair salons, and curio shops. Every third Saturday, they close down historic Robertson Street to host their wildly popular Market Days. This gives everyone a chance to take in the charm and history the town offers, amid several vendors offering everything from kettle corn, imported goods from Mexico, live music, and all things Tejano. Alma Garcia, a San Benito local who tries to never miss Market Days, recommends Vintage Crush, Villa Real Goods, and Echale Chamoy, to name a few. Be sure, while you’re there, to duck into their alleys where you’ll find several colorful murals painted by local artists. San Benito is the birthplace of Conjunto music, so it’s no surprise the city streets are filled with the sound of festive, live music downtown most weekends. Just up the street, a few blocks north of downtown, you’ll find the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame and Museum, where they host a festival every October to celebrate the traditions, music, and proud heritage the genre has brought to our tropical region. There’s basically a slice of history on every corner, but there are a couple that deserve a nod for being extra spectacular. The first is the Stonewall Jackson Hotel. Established in 1927, the gem sits empty today, but the stories are epic. Once upon a time, movie stars and dignitaries from Hollywood and

Mexico would frequent the lavish hotel. “Bob Hope used to stay there all the time. We had a world-class golf course that brought all the big shots here,” said Ray Flores, whose family has lived in San Benito for some 200 years. The other is the Aztec building. Sitting vacant, this two-story marvel of petrified wood, adobe, and brick was constructed in 1930 to appear as a ship sailing along the resaca. The waters aren’t as high as they used to be, so the illusion isn’t quite as effective, but the architecture still makes this structure a show stopper. Since it opened its massive doors some 90 years ago, it has lived several lives, including serving as city hall, a restaurant, an artists’ retreat, and a dance hall. During your visit, you may want to take a moment to sit at the city’s Memorial Park. It’s downtown, next to the train tracks and beautifully finished with touching sculptures that honor our men and women in uniform. •

he Brazos Santiago Pass connects the Brownsville Ship Channel to the Gulf of Mexico. This body of water can be seen from Isla Blanca Park on the south end of South Padre Island. It is a great spot for boat watching, as recreational and commercial fishing boats pass through daily--not to mention watching rockets launch from SpaceX, just off in the distance. •
These
four simple statements are powerful tools for improving your relationship and your life. When we are suffering, it can be heartbreaking to say these Four Things, but the Four Things applied at any time is what matters most in life. Authentic understanding and appreciation to others with the help of the Four Things: Even as people confront death (their own family or others’), they can reach out to express love, gratitude, and forgiveness. When they do, they consistently find that they, and everyone involved, are transformed for the rest of their lives, whether these lives last for decades or just days. When bad feelings occur in our close relationships, we tend to put off the work required to make things right. We always assume we’ll have another chance…later. That’s understandable, but it’s a mistake. Feeling resentful toward people we love, or once loved, feeling distant from them, eats away our own happiness. A brush with death often instills in us a newfound appreciation for the gift of life. Simple pleasures--a cup of coffee or tea, sunshine on one’s face, the voices of our children--feel like a miracle. When we have had a close call that shakes us up, the anger we’ve felt toward people

closest to us no longer seems significant. It will dissolve in love, appreciation, and affection, and we recognize the urgency of mending, tending, and celebrating our relationships. McAllen Awarded Leadership Status for Monarch Pledge Special to Welcome Home RGV
T
he City of McAllen was recognized by the National Wildlife Federation as a leader in monarch conservation, making it the first city in the region and the thirteenth in Texas to achieve the designation in 2021. According to the National Wildlife Federation, more than 600 mayors and heads of local and tribal government have participated in the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, which aims to create habitat for the monarch butterfly and other pollinators while educating people about monarchs and how to help them. For its pledge, the City of McAllen elected to complete eight action items related to monarch conservation in April 2021. These actions ranged from raising awareness about monarchs and how residents can help the species to creating habitat for the butterflies and other pollinators. As part of its habitat creation efforts, McAllen partnered with the McAllen Independent School District, Friends of the Wildlife Corridor, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to install native plant gardens at six elementary schools. Each school was provided guidance by the Center for Urban Ecology (CUE) at Quinta Mazatlan, which taught them how to prepare
the garden beds, delivered donated plants, compost, and mulch, and then planted the gardens with the students and their teachers. The CUE at Quinta Mazatlan also hosted native-plant sales during their annual Hummingbird Morning and Texas Native Plant Week events, encouraging residents--through workshops and programs--to use native plants for their benefit to monarchs and other local wildlife. Additionally, the CUE also curates community science projects to help monitor monarch butterfly seasonality in the region and to determine which native-plant species are important nectar sources for the butterfly. “We found that, based on observations submitted to iNaturalist,
monarch butterflies were most often observed drinking nectar from native plants like the mistflowers (Chromolaena odorata and Conoclinium betonicifolium), Texas Lantana (Lantana urticoides), and Mexican Trixis (Trixis inula),” said John Brush, urban ecologist at Quinta Mazatlan. “While this data is far from perfect, it does offer some ideas of what plants folks can use to help support monarchs in our landscapes.” While monarch-butterfly populations are still lower than their historic numbers, conservation efforts by towns and cities can make a difference in helping not only monarch butterflies but also the many other pollinators and wildlife that rely on native plants. •

uinta Mazatlán World Birding Center is honored to host author and Texas historian W.F. Strong Thursday, January 13, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. for a special discussion on birds of prey and a reading/book signing of his most recent publication, Stories from Texas, Some of Them are True Vol. II, as part of the Nature Speaker Series at Quinta Mazatlán. William F. Strong has deep roots in Texas that can be traced back for generations. He grew up working on farms and ranches, like his ancestors before him, and has been inspired by the culture, lore, environment, and diversity of the Lone Star State. He shares this love of Texas through his impeccable storytelling. Strong is gifted with a voice made for radio and engages his audience as a regular Texas commentator on NPR stations in Texas via the Texas Standard Radio Network. He also writes for Texas Coop Power Magazine, is a professor of communication and culture and a Fulbright Scholar at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and narrates stories for the Kevin Costner travel app, Hearhere.com His most recent book, Stories from Texas, Some of Them are True, Vol. II, is the second book in his series. It is a collection of 70 stories from his popular radio series, Stories of Texas, on the Texas Standard Radio Network. The book is a combination of funny folklore, Texas icons, and urban legends celebrating his home state.

Things I Have Learned

he kind folks at Palm Resaca Park continued to shine their spirit during the recent holiday season. Many bought toys for the Laguna Madre Youth Center, and a few of the Winter Texans dressed as Santa and his elves to assist with the Kid’s Christmas Party Friday, December 17. “The kids were so excited! We brought Santa hats, so each kid wore a Santa hat for their picture with Santa,” said Sherry Larratt, Winter Texan from British Columbia, Canada. Donations were also collected for the First Baptist School Scholarship Fund. Many of the families who receive aid live unpredictable lives. The school believes these realities should not limit them from giving their children a biblically based education.

To his disappointment, he was encountered the very next day by one of his own neighbors in a city 60 miles from his home. The jig was up by a crazy fluke of luck. The story isn’t so far-fetched. I have had the same experience many times and much further from home. No, I didn’t fake my own death, but a while back, I walked into an airport 1500 miles from home, and the first words I heard were, “Hi Bill.” It was
a couple from back home. When our family visited Washington D. C. many years ago, I walked out the door of our hotel, and the very first person I encountered on the street was a guy who lived two blocks from us in our town. The same thing happened to me in the airport in Boston. The weirdest one was in Las Vegas. That’s where, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” originated, remember. We were standing in a line for a bus, and I see a guy waving at me. There stood one of our downtown businessmen from home. So much for incognito. Good thing I was behaving. One of the things I have learned is that we can’t count on being alone. We know every store--and many homes--are well covered with cameras, but our actions there only

become public if someone goes in and searches them for some reason. A camera records, but it doesn’t react. People, on the other hand, observe, react, and report. That can be embarrassing. A few years back, I wrote a book. One of my conclusions, with pretty decent supporting evidence, was that we are really never alone. I won’t go into that here because the details get a little eerie. However, if you think about that, it changes your life. Perhaps it would be a good idea, each morning as we wake up, to tell ourselves, “Smile. You’re on candid camera.” Or, more to the point (spooky music here), “You’re being watched.” It might make us better people, and we might enjoy being the people we become as we live by
that thought. I’m just sayin’.•

Speer Memorial Library to Host Discussion
of The Woman’s Hour

oin us at Speer Memorial Library in Mission Tuesday, January 25, for a discussion of the book The Woman’s Hour, in the library’s Community Room at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and discuss the book. In July 1920, Carrie Catt travels by train from New York City to Nashville. A tireless crusader for women’s suffrage, she comes to town to take charge of the fight for ratification, by the Tennessee legislature, of the proposed Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote. Over the years, several states have extended the vote to women, but many more have not. Now, under the proposed amendment, women’s suffrage will extend nationwide-but first, it must be ratified by three-fourths (36) of the 48 states. Thirty-five states have ratified, but momentum has stalled. Eight have rejected it, three refuse to consider it, and North Carolina will almost certainly reject it, also. That leaves only Tennessee, where the prospects look grim. Written by Elaine Weiss and first published in 2018, The Woman’s Hour is the story of the dramatic conclusion to the 72-year struggle for women’s right to vote. It also tells of the insults and threats--and objects--hurled at suffragettes over the years as they spoke out for a woman to be able to fully participate in her country’s political affairs. In fact, some of the most vehement opposition came from women themselves. Kick Off the New Year at Gladys Porter Zoo The Gladys Porter Zoo invites the
public to start the new year off right by spending some time outdoors. The Zoo will be implementing some changes to their admission prices and is rolling out a newly restructured membership program. Changes to admission rates took effect January 1. The new admission rates will be $15.50 for adults (ages 14 to 64), $9.50 for children (ages 2 to 13), and $12.50 for seniors (ages 65 and older). Children under the age of two will continue to receive free admission to the Zoo. “The Zoo continues to keep its pricing low while remaining an excellent value for our visitors. There is much more to see and do at the Gladys Porter Zoo than in previous years and more exciting amenities are on the way,” said Zoo Director Dr. Patrick Burchfield. Changes to the Zoo’s membership program also went into effect this month. Current members will not be affected until it is time for them to renew. Members will still enjoy benefits such as free admission for a

year, free or discounted admission at over 100 zoos nationwide, and free parking in the Zoo’s limited-access parking lot. One benefit to these changes is that all memberships will now receive a ten-percent discount on all purchases made at the Zoo’s gift shops, Congo Bazaar and Zoofari Market. This discount was previously limited to only select membership levels. The Foundation is composed of various artists who, in 2005, came together to fill the need for performing arts in the area. The Foundation supports all of the local--upcoming and established-artists showcasing their talents, whether in writing, painting, or performing or in stage design. A lot of the growth El Paseo has experienced can be attributed to the support they receive from the community. Many locals attend their shows, and local businesses have become sponsors, realizing the good they do for the community. The Foundation helps establish South Padre Island as an art destination, showing there is more to discover on the Island. Aside from their productions and galleries, they also help educate and promote an appreciation of the arts. This is done through clinics and classes for our youth. figs are a real treat when you can find them. Usually specialty stores, such as Sprouts or Trader Joe’s, stock more unusual produce. Dried figs are more typical in mainline groceries. The following recipe is worth the hunt for the figs. It’s a wonderful appetizer for your next party that people won’t forget. • Lifelong foodie, restaurant reviewer, cooking teacher, and summer Iowan, Sandy Olson spends the Winter-Texan season at Palm Shadows RV Park in Donna. This season, Sandy will be sharing recipes to help readers enjoy the abundance of delicious fruits we find in our local markets. Sandy claims she’s been “a bit fruity” since childhood. Warm Figs Stuffed with Prosciutto and Goat Cheese

8 fresh ripe figs, trimmed and halved • ½ teaspoon kosher salt 4 oz. cold goat cheese • 3 oz. thinly sliced prosciutto 9 tablespoons packed light brown sugar • 6 tablespoons balsamic vinegar ½ teaspoon ground cumin
Use the small end of a melon baller to remove 1 scoop from the center of each fig half. Use the same melon baller to scoop the goat cheese into a similar-sized ball, and place it into the hollow of the fig. Place the figs, cut side up, on a heavy-rimmed baking sheet. Adjust the oven rack to about 5 inches below the broiler element; preheat the broiler. In a small bowl, stir 3 tablespoons of the brown sugar and the salt. Rub this mixture on 1 side of each slice of prosciutto. Cut the meat into pieces about the same size as the cut side of the figs, and place, sugar side up, on each fig. Broil until warm and the prosciutto is browned, about 3 minutes. In a small, heavy saucepan, place the balsamic vinegar and the remaining brown sugar. On medium heat, simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves into the vinegar. Then simmer 1 minute more. Place the broiled figs on a serving platter, and drizzle the balsamic sauce over them. SANDY’S NOTE: In order to keep things simple, you can make the balsamic sauce first and sugar/cut the prosciutto, too, before you prepare the figs and cheese. Putting the appetizers together then becomes faster. •

Servings: 1 - 2
• ½ cup grapefruit juice • 1½ cups coconut milk, plus more for serving • 1 cup white quinoa • ¼ cup coconut flakes • Maple syrup or coconut sugar, to taste • Grapefruit, nuts and/or granola for topping Bring coconut milk, grapefruit juice, and quinoa to a boil in a saucepan. Reduce heat to low and cover, cooking for 15 minutes, until most of the liquid is absorbed. Divide into bowls and add additional coconut milk for a porridgelike consistency. Blueberry Coffee Cake
This is one my baking favorites!
I haven’t met a person yet who doesn’t like blueberries so it’s a safe coffee cake to make for your house guests or just as an afternoon snack for you and your family. Blueberries are also healthy, with all of their antioxidants. I’m not really sure exactly what that all means, but I know they are good for me so that’s enough. Additionally, this is an easy treat to make so I hope you will try it this weekend! Happy baking! Bon Appétit! •
For the Streusel : • 1/3 cup sugar • ½ cup all-purpose flour • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
• 1/8 tsp salt • 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter
For the Cake:
• 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 tsp baking powder • ½ tsp salt • ¾ cup sugar • 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter, slightly softened
• 1 large egg at room temperature • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract • ½ cup milk • 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease an 8" square or round cake pan.
To make the topping:
Mix the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt in a small bowl. Cut or rub in the butter with a pastry cutter, two knives or your fingertips just until it reaches a crumbly state. Set aside. In a medium-sized bowl, blend the flour, baking powder, and salt together. In a separate bowl, beat together the sugar, butter, egg, and vanilla. Alternately add the milk and the flour mixture to the sugar/butter mixture, ending with flour. Add blueberries. Stir just enough to blend. Take care not to overmix. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle the streusel topping over the batter. Bake the cake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick or knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove the cake from the oven, and set it on a rack to cool for 10 minutes. Serve right from the pan. Or transfer to a serving plate. Yield: about 12 to 16 servings •

t The Lamb’s Loom, we are kicking the new year off with hatitude! Join us the week of January 12 for our 8th Annual Yarn Tasting, and be ready for some hat-itude! Just in case you missed it, this year’s theme is Hat-itude, and we want to share it with y’all, Our Yarn Tasting is a fun event for everyone. Just like last year, our Yarn Tasting will be hosted over four days. Yep, you read that right. A four-day yarn party. We always kick off the Yarn Tasting with the announcement of the final Donation Chest count for the year. The final count for 2020 was 4777, and we are hoping we surpassed that in 2021. Our Donation Chest has been “working” pretty hard this year, thanks to all of you, and we are all excited. You know, it has definitely been true, of late, that days can be challenging, and a positive attitude always helps add a little sunshine to a gloomy day. We have been blessed over the years by so many of you who add to this ministry and to our Donation Chest. Your “hat-itudes” are contagious! We want to inspire
that hat-itude of helping others in all we do. For our week of Yarn Tasting, there will be all kinds of fun with our theme of Hat-itude, too! The displays of creativity and yarn fun are always a treat to see, and this year will be no
different. We will be featuring some of our new and favorite yarns, sharing patterns, and offering classes. Our friend Kristy from Kristy’s Furry Fiber Friends Yarn will be on hand with some of her beautiful, locally handdyed yarns! She has an amazing way with color, and we are thrilled to have her in the shop! And, of course, door prizes, giveaways and Sit-n-Knit will all be in full swing.
