GRAB YOUR “WINTER TEXAN TO GO” ISSUE!

FROM KRISTI

It’s

no secret that word of mouth is the number-one reason Winter Texans flock to the Rio Grande Valley each season. I’m sure, if you think about it, most of you heard about South Texas from a friend or family member, and that’s what brought you here. What they probably didn’t tell you was it’s about a 10-hour drive once you hit the Texas state line, no matter which direction you’re coming from! Sure, it’s a drive, but you and I know it’s worth it. Maybe I’m a little biased, but I think you’ll agree with me that you can’t beat the weather, the cost of living, and the camaraderie you find not only amongst fellow Winter Texans but amongst Valleyites, as well. It’s no surprise that we want you here, and we always want you to feel at home in South Texas. We recognize the impact you have on our communities, and we can’t thank you enough for it! In the pages that follow, you’ll find a whole lot of information about our area and all we have planned for next season. I hope you’ll take a few extra copies home with you to share with your friends and family who braved the winter up north so you can show them why the Valley is your winter home and what they’re missing. • We’re just connecting the dots,

Kristi

hen asked ‘Why choose the R.G.V.?’ Karen Price simply states, in her distinct southern drawl, “It’s just fun!” In 1999, after retiring from teaching, Karen and her husband, Jerry, left their home state of North Carolina to travel by R.V. During a stop in Nova Scotia, Canada, they met a couple who raved about South Texas. “They told us we had to come down here; we had no clue.” The Prices came down in 2001, spent three winters here, and eventually became permanent residents, also known as Converted Texans. Karen shares how they have visited other states known for warmer winters but fell in love with the Rio Grande Valley because it’s more economical,

and they wanted to dance. Yes, dance. “All we knew was South Carolina beach music, the shag. We wanted to learn the Texas two-step.” When the Prices made the decision to enjoy the local amenities year-round, they found their permanent home at Sunshine Country Club Estates in Harlingen when they visited for a dance. The Rio Grande Valley, or RGV, is located at the southern tip of Texas, bordering Mexico. The region is made-up of four counties: Starr, Hidalgo, Willacy, and Cameron. It’s home to approximately 300 RV parks and resorts. The cost of living tops the list of its many appealing WHY THE RGV? CONTINUED ON PAGE 4 >>

raveling away from home for any extended amount of time can come with its own set of challenges and burdens. Here in South Texas, there can be a language barrier. Drivers may be a bit different than back home. Understanding the items on a local menu can even be a tasty challenge. But receiving top-shelf medical and dental care while on holiday doesn’t have to be. “The variety and specialty doctors are here no matter what your illness is. Once you get a good doctor, they take care of you very well,” said Lynn Massingale. She and her husband compared their Texas health care to that which they received in Virginia-and it’s no contest. South Texas is head and shoulders better in terms of cost, accessibility, wait time, and variety. That’s music to the ears of Abigail Rosales, marketing manager for South Texas Health System Clinics, who said those are some of the goals her group strives for and that meeting those needs in the community is one of the factors that keeps the medical group growing. “We have recently increased our hours to include evening and weekends,” said Rosales. “And we continue to add more physicians.” Another unique perk their team offers, that Winter Texans love, is the online scheduling. “This allows someone in Michigan to get in before they even get here,” Rosales said. That, along with their virtual appointments, is a big hit. “We strive for convenience and ease,” Rosales said. It shows. Solid, accessible health care seems to be around every corner in the Rio Grande Valley. “I’m less than five minutes from three hospitals and many others, within 20 minutes,” said Dennis Nowicki. “Hospitals here can

provide any type of services. We’ve used them ourselves. Medicare doctors aplenty.” He says that in Plano, where he’s from, it took a great deal of effort to have access to the medical care they needed. “We feel blessed to be here,” he said. Another feather in the local healthcare cap is its emergency services and, again, the ease with which one can access them. “Each little town has their own ER, and if you need to go, you just go right into these small places,” said Massingale. “If they can’t help you, they take you right to the hospital.” And then there’s the growing popularity of the residency clinics in South Texas. Massingale said the McAllen Family Medicine Residency Clinic through South Texas Health System has exceeded the couple’s expectations. “We feel like they know the latest, greatest thing, being that they are just out of college,” she said. “A licensed doctor oversees them. It’s easy to get in, and they accept insurance.” Stellar medical care is just one of the healthy perks that comes with a South Texas lifestyle. There’s quality affordable dental care, too, on both sides of the border. Because many Winter Texans don’t have dental coverage as a part of their retirement benefits, many find themselves going into Progreso to receive topnotch dental care at a fraction of the price. “We pay about a fourth of the price in Mexico as we do here,” said Massingale. And finding a quality dentist in Progreso is as easy as asking your neighbor. “It’s all by word of mouth. If you need a root canal, you go to that one. If you need a crown, you go to a different one,” said Massingale. “There’s several very good ones.” •

qualities. In 2020, U.S. News & World Report referred to the city of McAllen -- located in Hidalgo County -- as having the lowest cost of living for a metro city in the United States. Sergio Contreras is the president and CEO of the RGV Partnership, a nonprofit that drives collaboration between local businesses and elected officials, with emphasis on transportation, health care, the economy, and, more recently, tourism. Tens of thousands of Winter Texans-retirees looking to escape cold weather--visit deep South Texas every year for extended periods. The Valley welcomes them with open arms, as Sergio succinctly states. “We see them as part of our community, part of our DNA.” Larry Mainz and his wife, Jan, are Converted Texans by way of Wisconsin. Larry traveled the country as a truck driver before retiring in 2002. The couple made their home at Lamplighter Park in Palmview. Larry talks up the Valley at every opportunity, and his enthusiasm is contagious. “In order to sell something, you have to have a good product. The R.G.V. is a good product!” Larry agrees the low cost of living and proximity to Mexico are part of its appeal but emphasizes the friendliness of the people as a big draw. “We’re a friendly bunch! We recognize the impact our Winter and Converted Texans have on the area, and we’re grateful for it,” says Kristi Collier, owner of Welcome Home R.G.V., which markets and promotes the Valley. For 13 years, Kristi has connected visitors to local businesses and services, leading the charge to ‘welcome home’ winter visitors each year with open arms. And communities and cities follow suit, hosting festivals and annual events specifically geared toward winter visitors. “It’s important to feel at home, even when you are a visitor,” says Sergio. A welcoming community is a bonus, but a safe one is of utmost consideration for anyone visiting or moving to a new area. Like any city or region, the Valley is not without its faults, but when it comes to safety, Valley cities consistently rank high in the state and in the U.S. in surveys that utilize F.B.I. crime statistics. In 2019, McAllen ranked 4th-safest city in the nation by 247wallst.com and 26th in Texas (out of nearly 3,000) by backgroundchecks.org. The city of Mission, also located in Hidalgo County, ranks safest city in the RGV and 23rd in the state by safehome. org. Larry credits an abundance of law enforcement, both local and federal, with ensuring the safety of the community. He makes a point of engaging with local law enforcement

at every opportunity. He reports his encounters are always friendly, including with the lead law officer in Hidalgo County. “We’ve run into the sheriff, and he always stops by and tips his hat to my wife.” Retirees must also consider access to good health care. The RGV Partnership recently conducted an economic impact study on the RGV health-care and bioscience industry that showed 43 percent of new jobs created between 2009 and 2019 were in this industry. The study states, “The RGV’s health-care and bioscience industry is both large and diverse.” Sergio says the results of the survey signify the industry continues to grow. And, he says, “We continue to educate ourselves on the

services that are needed.” He goes on to say the accessibility of health care is evident throughout the region, primarily in Hidalgo and Cameron counties, with a significant number of facilities ready to serve. The Mainzes heard misconceptions about the Valley before their first visit and say they have found none to be true. Newcomers are often pleasantly surprised. In 2019, Welcome Home R.G.V. hosted a reunion tour in the Midwest and gave away a free stay offered by local resorts. A couple who had never visited South Texas won. Kristi reports, “We matched up their interests with the amenities of the park and gave them a two-week stay at Paradise Park in McAllen. They wound up buying a lot during their

stay!” There are approximately 300 RV parks and resorts in the Rio Grande Valley. In a typical season, parks and resorts are open to outside guests joining in on activities. When the Prices made the decision to enjoy the local amenities year-round, they found their permanent home at Sunshine Country Club Estates. Karen says the close proximity to so many other resorts expands the options. “These parks are so close, you can do more activities,” she says. “Once they see the difference down here, they get it!” Kristi says. Karen and Jerry and Larry and Jan get it. Larry sums up the RGV like this: “If you’ve ever been to Disneyland, it’s like that; it’s a magical feeling!” •

I

hear through the grapevine you’re leaving us for a spell. Hurry back and bring friends (They will thank you later). I had to leave the Rio Grande Valley once, and it took me 34 years to get back. I hope I never have to say good-bye again. This made me think about how you, our Winter Texans, must be feeling to leave behind such a beautiful landscape filled with tropical wonders bumped up to our impressive South Padre Island. If you’re like me, you still pinch yourself as you’re walking barefoot on the Island in January or watching hummingbirds dance around their feeders at Christmas. I know leaving must be difficult, so instead of offering another goodbye, I’m hoping to fill you with anticipation by teasing you with some samples off my RGV bucket list. When you get back, you might want to go on a picnic at La Sal Del Rey in Edinburg, where we hear you can find beautiful salt crystals the size of one’s fist. There’s a stained-glass museum being built in San Juan with pieces from my husband’s hometown of Albany, New York. Downtown Brownsville has a hamburger stand that’s the size of a closet and has been serving happy customers for nearly 100 years. What about grabbing a condo with a great view or even a nice sandy spot on the beach to catch a rocket launch from SpaceX? That’s on our bucket list, too. We also can’t wait for our first Lucha Libre match, a day at Off-Track Betting in Harlingen, a drive-in movie night at the WesMer in Mercedes, some bruises from roller skating at Fantasyland,

and nachos from bowling at the Flamingo. We still need to get a cocktail at historic Casa De Palmas after we go play bingo at one of the RGV’s huge bingo barns. Then there’s our history--and so much of it readily available to explore-from the Palo Alto battlefield to the shrimpers’ cemetery in Port Isabel to Al Capone’s vacation home, with hundreds of historical markers peppering your route in-between. Our RGV has something historically special everywhere you look.

And we still haven’t made it “across” for some cabrito at Garcia’s in Matamoros or the fajitas at Arturo’s in Progreso. I blame our local taco shops. I can never make it all the way to the border before one of our local spots catches my eye and draws me in. The struggle is real. The RGV is a foodie’s paradise, with tasty treats found on every corner to tempt the palate. We have been to “farm to fork” restaurants serving greens from local crops and cattle from our ranches just up the

road. We cherish our Taquerias, where fourth-generation daughters have learned to make the tortillas and beans to perfection. The local foodie scene is definitely one of my favorite RGV perks. The RGV is a bit of magic for sure, so hurry back as we have so much left to discover. We will miss you, but leave, knowing there are endless adventures filled with fresh warm tortillas, grapefruit pies, and plenty of sweet tea waiting here for you when you get back. •

Gladys Porter Zoo Welcomes Two Male Sharks and Extends Its Hours Special to Welcome Home RGV

S

ince the Gladys Porter Zoo opened in 1971, it has never been the home to nurse sharks, which can grow up to 13 feet. We are excited to announce that we added two males to our collection on January 25. These two male nurse sharks were brought from the Mississippi Aquarium and are now living in our 30,000 Gulf of Mexico tank found in the Russell Aquatic Ecology Center. Ours are about five feet long and are definitely larger than any other species we have ever housed. “They are very much like house cats: they like to relax on the bottom of the ocean, often in groups of two to five and sometimes lying right on top of one another,” said senior aquarist Dan Goggin. Just like they enjoy lounging at the bottom of the Gulf and the Atlantic Ocean, they also enjoy doing the same here; you’ll often be able to get a great view of them because of this, and they are a sight to see. We encourage the public to come and visit them. And since we are so excited to add them to our collection, we need the public’s help to name

them. Our aquarium staff selected several names, and we are asking everyone to vote on their favorites. The following are the names from which to choose: Oscar, Fred, Silver, Hercules, Poseidon, Butch, and Sundance. All those who want to participate can visit our website, gpz.org, and cast their vote starting March 5. The two names with the highest votes will be selected. In addition to this exciting news, and with spring and daylight-savings time quickly approaching, the Zoo staff decided it’s time to have some fun and enjoy the sunshine, so we will be open daily from March 5 to April 4. From March 5 to March 13, Zoo hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and from March 14 to April 4, the Zoo will extend its weekend hours to 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Zoo will still have limited

capacity, so reservations are recommended for all guests, including, Gladys Porter Zoo members. We will accept walk-ups as long as the time slot is not sold out. If the slot is full, guests will have to wait a few minutes until the next time slot, approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Safety measures that were implemented when the Zoo reopened June 8 will remain in place.

To limit the spread of COVID-19, facial coverings are required upon entry for guests ages six and up. They are also required when inside buildings and within six feet of other guests or staff. Tickets can be purchased online to limit contact at the gates. A one-way route around the Zoo is still in effect to better allow for social distancing. experience the sandcastle trail Special to Welcome Home RGV

S

outh Padre Island is home to a collection of castles called the Sandcastle Trail. Around two dozen sand sculptures are located throughout the Island, sculpted by professional sand artists--some local and some from as far away as Singapore! Many of these sculptures are traditional castles, while others are themed for the businesses and organizations where they are located. The City of South Padre Island set forth initiatives to rebuild, sustain, and grow key sandcastle exhibits on the Island, which includes the Sandcastle Trail. Lucinda “Sandyfeet” Wierenga and her team work year-round on touching up the existing sand sculptures. The Sandcastle Trail gives Island visitors the opportunity to see South Padre Island’s brand of

on south padre island local art. The sand sculptures can be found in front of various businesses, and a map is available that shows the exact locations of the art. A map can be found on sopadre.com or at the South Padre Island Visitors Center (321 Padre Boulevard). Want more of a hands-on experience? Take a sandcastle lesson with a master sand sculptor who will help you build the sandcastle of your dreams! Whether you want to build a traditional sandcastle, an animal, a cartoon character, or even your very own sand throne, our local sand sculptors will show you how it’s done. You don’t need any artistic ability; you just need to be able to have fun. For more information on the Sandcastle Trail or to join in on the fun, visit sopadre.com. •

U.S. News & World Report Ranks McAllen as #3 for Best Places to Live for Quality of Life Methodology used measured value of living in the community and the desirability to live there Special to Welcome Home RGV

McAllen

has been rated tops again by U.S. News & World Report, this time, ranking #3 for Best Places to Live for Quality of Life in the U.S. in 2020-2021, measuring how satisfied residents are with their daily lives. U.S. News analyzed 150 metro areas in the United States to find the best places to live based on quality of life and the job market in each area, as well as the value of living there and people’s desire to live there. “This ranking is no surprise to anyone who lives in our great city of McAllen,” said McAllen Mayor Jim Darling. “Our City of McAllen administration and staff are some of the most creative, innovative, and dedicated employees who daily work to provide the best programs, projects, events, infrastructure, and services to ensure that all who live in McAllen are safe and healthy and enjoy all that our city has to offer. By working closely with the private sector, educational institutions and medical services, McAllen becomes an attractive place to work, learn, and get healthy. Throw in all the fun things to do here, and I would say we have the best place to live for quality of life, anywhere!” According to the final report, McAllen was described as “…a vibrant metro area and a major center for retail, international trade, tourism, and manufacturing. A high quality of life, an abundance of medical facilities and a young, bicultural community are additional draws.” Other highlights for the city were its warm environment, describing both the residents and mild temperatures, which is a huge draw for Winter Texans, who also help boost the local economy with millions of dollars. Also noted was McAllen’s proximity to Mexico and the close relationship it enjoys with Mexican nationals who come to McAllen to shop and enjoy other activities. The strong Hispanic culture celebrated in McAllen was

another feature emphasized in the report. All of these elements were a part of the methodology used for McAllen to earn a Quality of Life score of 7.8. The proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, the many activities available at Town Lake at Fireman’s Park. and birdwatching were some of the nature activities highlighted as things to do in McAllen. Other key attractions mentioned include the McAllen Public Library, “…the largest single-floor public library in the nation, offering everything from a children’s play area to an art gallery to a cafe…” and the metro area’s International Museum of Art & Science. Also mentioned were the community’s annual festivals, including the McAllen Holiday Parade and the Fiesta De Palmas, which draw residents together. Another highlight was McAllen’s low cost of living, which is ranked the least expensive metro areas in which to live in the nation. According to the report, residents spend less than the national median sale price on home purchases, as well as less than the national average on everyday expenses like food, transportation, and heath care. McAllen’s short commute time of about 20 minutes is a draw, but also highlighted was the Metro McAllen public-transportation, intracity buses, which run seven routes throughout the metro area and offer paratransit services. The metro area’s bike-share program, B-cycle, stationed in locations around the region, was highlighted as a low-cost public transit option for citizens. The McAllen International Airport, serviced by major airlines including Aeromar, American Airlines, Allegiant Airlines, and United Airlines and ground transport to other cities, provided by charter-bus companies like Greyhound, were included as a highlight of transportation options for residents. McAllen has also earned the

e can’t get enough of this discussion on the WHRGV Group page. We would love for you to add your own. Let’s keep this going. •

You know you’re a Winter Texan when…

Photos by Eryn Reddell Wingert

…you wear shorts and flip flops when it’s 40 degrees. …you can’t believe anyone would go anywhere else for the winter. …you are not watching your driveway for snow. …you’re wearing a winter jacket and the temperature is in the 60s! …you say, “How y’all doin’, eh?” …you look forward to going to H-E-B when you arrive. …you have more friends in Texas than at home. …you can’t wait to get a Whataburger!! …you take a nap so you can play bingo. …you know SPI doesn’t stand for Spots Per Inch or Software Piracy Intervention or even Shipping Procedural Instructions but South Padre Island. …you think about South Texas when you are away. …you run out of H-E-B products back home in the summer and you’re upset. …you have a suntan in February! …you text someone back home that it’s 80 degrees and you are sitting on your patio in January, February, and March while they’re complaining about the cold and snow. …you get back home and all you can talk about is next winter in Texas. …you buy meds and vanilla and get your dental work done in Progreso, Mexico. …you keep an aloe vera plant up north in a Texas-etched vase. …you wish you were back in Texas a week after you leave. …you wear your cowboy hat while driving you electric cart in Walmart! …you see a Dairy Queen every couple of miles!!! …you spend hours in the outdoor pool daily! …you get a jacket when it’s 68 degrees. …you eat supper at 4 p.m. so you can go to bingo at 6! …you think like a teenager--”Well, it seemed like a good thing at the time.” (Like jumping in the pool after a few with your heart monitor on.) …it’s 60 degrees and you put a winter coat on to go for a walk! …the pool temperature is 80 degrees and it’s too cold to swim. …you no longer care when it snows up north. …we arrive at Taco Palenque. …you buy a golf cart and don’t play golf. …you have on shorts and flip flops when natives are wearing coats, hats, and gloves. …you pick up breakfast and dinner at Valero! …you’re sitting out in your shorts, sunning, and up north they’ve got 26 inches of snow! …it’s happy hour every hour. …you’re looking for your palm-tree shadow. …you wear flip flops 24-7-365. …you have to search your closet for long pants. …you don’t have seasonal affective disorder. …you are swimming and your brother has his fireplace going. …you cross the state line and it feels like home. …the temperature drops to 50 and you think it’s cold. …you miss the warm weather and friends and you’re stuck in front of your fireplace in a snowstorm in the North. …you stay home for one winter and feel like you’re freezing to death (but it’s only 25 degrees). …winter pictures from Iowa show up on your Facebook feed and you feel nauseated. …you step up your crafting so you can participate in the craft sales at Valley parks. …you love hitting a golf ball from Texas into Mexico! …you know what “border buttermilk” is. …the temp drops to 73 degrees and it feels chilly. …a flamingo is hanging on your flower tree with plastic bananas.

here’s a community of talented individuals who arrive in the Rio Grande Valley each year, some traveling hundreds of miles, not to relax by the pool or play pickle ball; they come to work. The job? To entertain Winter Texans. It is work, indeed. In addition to singing, playing instruments and even adding props, costumes, and comedy into the mix, many act as their own manager, roadie, public-relations representative, travel agent, promoter, and sound engineer, all before taking to stages across the Rio Grande Valley. The relationship between entertainer and audience is one of give and take. Entertainers take to the stage, not knowing if they will be well received by applause or hear crickets while they perform. It begins when the first song is played. “To get out there and get past the first song, the anxiety of -- especially if it’s a new place -- the waiting is unnerving,” says singer and musician Rick McEwen, who has been performing in the Valley since 2017. His experience as a performer during Winter Texan season is, for the most part, a positive one. “It’s incredibly stressful to play where you think you’re not wanted. But I have never found that in the Valley.” Whether they travel hundreds of miles or call the RGV home yearround, entertainers spend countless hours developing their acts. To clarify, Elvis Russel the ‘Co.’ in Helen Russell & Co., says there are differences between performing a ‘happy hour,” a dance, and a show. A happy hour is geared toward singing favorites, a dance focuses on getting people out onto the floor, and a show…well, Elvis says, is the category they fall into. “We have a one-of-a-kind variety show. We do comedy, impersonations and audience participation.” Regardless of the billing, Helen and Elvis guarantee “you’ll be 100-percent entertained!” The Russells hail from Missouri. This past Valentine’s Day, they celebrated their forty-second wedding anniversary. The couple performs year-round, and for three-and-a-half months out of the year, they call Snow to Sun RV Resort home. Elvis retired from construction and joined Helen, who grew up performing, on the stage. They heard about the Rio Grande Valley from fellow performers, and in 2016 came on down. “‘We were green as gourds! We had no clue

what was going on down here,” says Helen. “We came down, loved it, made it work.” They booked a few dates during their initial two-week trial visit, then a few more, and a few more. “There’s work to be had here; you’ve just got to hustle,” she says. Helen Russell & Co. specializes in performing live music, incorporating comedy, costumes, and props into their act, changing it up to keep it fresh, says Elvis. “Ninety percent of our act is new each year.” Curt Riester enjoyed singing as a pastime; now he’s known among the Winter Texan community as Curt James the Entertainer. His path to the stage started when he was asked

to sing at a birthday party in his Alamo Country Club neighborhood. “All of us have a history prior to doing what we do. One thing led to another; it was lucrative enough to relax my lifestyle a bit and spend more time with Stella,” shares Curt. He stepped back from the restaurant industry, shifting focus to booking gigs and spending time with his wife of over 20 years. When Curt performs, Stella can typically be found just off stage snapping and posting photos and videos, actively promoting and supporting Curt in his new-found career. Curt has also found support from within the entertainment community.

He says more experienced performers, like Tom Wurth and Rick McEwen, have shown an interest in his success by readily offering advice. “They’re so down to earth and help me be the entertainer I want to be.” Rick’s experience is vast. He began singing in the church choir as a child in Coleman, Alabama, and later took up the bass guitar. He has performed back-up for Earl Scruggs, The Dillards, and The Darling Family of the Andy Griffith Show. He sings gospel, blue grass, and country, to name a few. white mane and beard afford him comparisons to Kenny Rogers, which he incorporates into his stage act. Rick brought his voice, guitar, and music-industry experience down to the Valley in 2017. Going solo was not easy. “You can’t just say, ‘Hey! I’m doing a show!’ and everybody shows up; it doesn’t work that way.” With his signature humor, Rick adds, “The fact that Elvis will put on a dress in front of two to three hundred grown men, they get it! If you put yourself out there, throw yourself under the bus, so to speak, you’ll win them over.” Elvis agrees. “Helen and I will do anything to entertain the audience. It’s not about us; it’s about them. And I don’t care if it’s 10 sitting out there or a thousand, they’re going to get the same show.” Despite the hard work and anxiousness that comes with being an entertainer, the Russells, Curt, and Rick say they love what they do. “I feel so blessed to be doing what I’m doing, and I get to meet some great people along the way,” says Curt. And Rick sums it up this way: “Our Valley is precious. Our people are precious. When they stand in the rain and cheer… that’s why we do what we do.” •

Pack Your Instruments and Jam On! Resorts across the RGV host regular jam sessions open to amateur and novice musicians alike! Winter visitor James Kropenske of South Dakota is the activity director at Mission Bell and Trade Winds RV resorts in Mission. James, a musician in his own right, regularly hosts jam sessions. He establishes a stage band of more-experienced players of various instruments to support participating musicians and singers. Players and singers are invited to join in by providing a selection of music in their preferred key and root chord. Jam sessions at various parks can be genre-specific, like country or rock and roll, or free-play. James says the assemblies create an atmosphere of camaraderie. “What’s really cool--keep in mind--it’s not rehearsed; it’s raw, authentic music.” •

Things I Have Learned While Watching by Bill Ward

ecently I was standing, observing a photo display of old barns. The photographer had done a nice job of capturing the beauty of the barns and framing them for an impressive professional display. Each barn clearly had its issues. Most were without paint. Some were sagging in the middle. Some had boards missing here and there. It was also clear that each had once had a fruitful and valued existence. They had provided shelter and work space

for some farmer and his family and served to provide an income and a head full of “barn-life” memories for the kids who began their lives there. It was also very clear that, today, each of the barns in that display was retired. They were just old barns. To most people who drove by them, they were just junk left over from another era. Someday they would fall down, and someone would build something new in their place--or maybe plow over the land and return it to production. But in looking closely at those photos, there was also a beauty there. The photographer had seen something more than junk and had been able to bring out that charm and elegance in the photo. One thing I have learned in life is

A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy

More Than Junk that people are much like barns. In my career in the long-term care business, I photographed a lot of older folks. We displayed many of those photos, from time to time, and we got the same positive responses from people. The subjects were well-advanced in age. They were sagging. Some had a few things missing. The paint of youth was gone. Each was long retired. But it was clear that they once had, and many continued to have, a fruitful and valued existence. There was beauty, elegance, and charm in those photos. Most of us on the advanced side of life don’t see our own beauty and elegance. Perhaps, like the photographer, we need to look closer. I’m just sayin’. •

he term “Winter Texan” was coined by Joe Polonski, according to his wife of 50 years, Maria Polonski. Joe and Maria opened the Split Rail RV Resort in Mission, Texas, in 1978. Maria recalls that park owners would attend chamber of commerce gatherings. “They would call them ‘snowbirds,’ and my husband said, ‘No. They are not snowbirds; they are Winter Texans.’” Joe and Maria’s son, Stephen, explains why the change in terminology was important. “By calling them Winter Texans, it made it more inclusive, more welcoming.” Joe and Maria moved to South Texas from Chicago. Maria says he made up his mind to retire someplace warm after a particularly harsh blizzard. The couple had visited Florida, but as Maria shares, Florida wasn’t an option. “Joe said he would never live there; it’s nothing but concrete and a lot of tourists.” When asked what she thought about moving to the Valley, Maria chuckles, admitting she was resistant to the idea. But, she says, it grew on her. “The orange blossoms in the springtime--that was something to really appreciate.” Recalling the early days of the Split Rail, Maria says the majority of visitors were retired farmers, content with playing cards and shuffleboard. Today’s visitors and residents, she says, are more active, with a wider variety of interests. The park strives to accommodate them, adding options like pickle ball and a gym. In a typical season, Stephen says they do things such as rent out sunset cruises off South Padre Island. “We have very active people in the park; they are out and about!” Stephen has been involved with the family-run business since he was a child. He modernized the park

by transitioning from his mother’s diligent long-hand recordkeeping to a computerized system. A far cry from when he and his father would place brochures on cars with out-ofstate license plates around Mission. “It worked!” he said. “We were almost full that first season.” That successful first season was followed by repeat business that has lasted throughout the decades. Stephen and Maria report Split Rail now hosts second- and third-generation Winter and Converted Texans. Jeremiah Martin of Mission is a third-generation member of a family that established nine RV parks in the Mission area. It all started in the 1970s when his grandfather, Jack Martin of Sioux City, Iowa, along with his wife, Lila Mae, purchased 1,100 acres of land in the Rio Grande Valley. When the original

citrus groves suffered during a hard winter freeze, the Martins pivoted to developing sections of land into parks. Jeremiah says his 94-year-old grandfather’s focus was on serving Winter Texans, a family tradition that continues to this day. Jack spread the word about the Valley to friends and associates from northern states, even visiting state fairs in Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota to market the parks. The first development became Dream Valley Ranch which comprised 252 lots for mobile homes. “That was the beginning of Martin Valley Ranches,” writes Lila Mae. “There was already somewhat of a Winter Texan base growing down here,” says Jeremiah. “He stuck strictly to developing for retirees, even creating a golf course, Martin

Valley Ranch Golf Course.” Further development included the creation of a water district, which Jeremiah manages today. Jeremiah and his dad also coown El Dorado Acres in Mission. Jeremiah’s wife, Anne Marie, works at Welcome Home RGV, which caters to Winter Texan visitors. Even his three daughters, he says, “have multiple, multiple, multiple grandparents” (Winter Texans). The Martin and Polonski families continue to serve Winter Texans today. While the activities and terminology--from snowbird to Winter Texan--have changed, the commitment remains the same, says Stephen. “We want Winter Texans to be a part of the community, to give them a connection to our retirement slice of heaven.” •

Welcome Home® rio grande valley

www.welcomehomergv.com

Meet Kristy Meyer ••• My name is Kristy Hallock Meyer. I was born and raised in McAllen. I grew up in the middle of a citrus orchard my grandad and dad farmed for many years. My love of travel came from the many family vacations my parents took me on as a child. The best one was the cruise we took for my high school graduation. From that point on, I was hooked on cruising! I have now been on more than 30 cruises! After graduating from high school, I knew travel was my passion, so I enrolled in Pace Travel Academy in Austin. Soon after, I landed my first job as a travel agent. I worked as a travel consultant for many years, later managing a local travel agency for nine years. After the horrific events September 11, 2001, the travel world experienced many changes. The travel agency I had loved and managed for so long decided it was time to close. I then had the opportunity to work for a nonprofit organization that helps abused children here in the Rio Grande Valley. This experience certainly opened my eyes to a different world, a world I had never seen. After eight years and a lot of soul searching, I decided it was time to get back to my passion...TRAVEL! I am married to Bobby, the love of my life, and between us we have four wonderful children. I am one lucky girl because Bobby loves to travel as much as I do! Together we have had countless opportunities to visit wonderful places, in addition to cruising! I am looking forward to helping you plan your trip of a lifetime. Just tell us where you want to go, and we’ll connect the dots!

raveling through the great state of Texas is destined to be a big, bright adventure! Who doesn’t love a little adventure? Texas has so many exciting places to visit. Here are a few favorite recommendations from Travel by Welcome Home. Situated on the South Texas border with Mexico, Laredo is a three-hour drive west from the Rio Grande Valley. This charming border town is full of history and offers an abundance of modern-day activities. The historic downtown showcases cultural museums, beautiful architecture, and delicious local cuisine. Venture beyond downtown to enjoy a round of golf at The Max or hike the trails at Lake Casa Blanca International Park. Historic San Antonio has so many exciting things to see and do. A true favorite is the famous River Walk and the nearby legendary site, the Alamo. The Pearl Brewery offers an array of restaurants and boutiques; we recommend trying them all! The Witte Museum and the San Antonio Zoo are fantastic places to spend a whole day each. Take in a Broadwaystyle show at the Majestic Theater. If you are up for some exhilarating fun, take a turn on the Batman ride at Six Flags Fiesta Texas and experience an Orca encounter at SeaWorld San Antonio. Sunny Corpus Christi is located on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. It’s home to the U.S.S. Lexington, a 1943 commissioned aircraft carrier and is open daily for tours. Take in the sea life at newly expanded Texas State Aquarium, located right around the corner from the U.S.S. Lexington. Take a walk on some of the most beautiful beaches, and make sure to stop at the Texas Surf Museum. Did you know that in 1836, Galveston was the capital of the

This palm-tree-lined pond was spotted on the grounds of the Shary Mansion Estate in Palmview. In the Rio Grande Valley, palm trees are an iconic symbol. The historic Shary Mansion was the home to John Shary, the “Father of the Texas Citrus Industry.” President Dwight D. Eisenhower stayed at the mansion during his visit to the Valley in 1953. Palm trees are the official welcoming committee to Valley visitors and residents, lining the highways and guiding your entry into tropical Deep South Texas. Financial Website Lists McAllen as #15 Safest City Ranking based on cost of crime Special to Welcome Home RGV

McAllen

has once again been recognized as one of the top cities in America for its low crime rate, but this time, the ranking compares the direct economic costs of crime to individual victims, perpetrators, communities, and society at large. MoneyGeek website analyzed crime statistics and research findings based on victim, criminaljustice systems, crime career, and intangible costs to estimate the cost of crimes in over 300 cities across the United States, ranking McAllen as #15 overall.

Victims’ costs include: direct economic losses suffered by crime victims, including medical care costs, lost earnings, and property loss/damage Criminal-justice system costs include: local, state, and federal government funds spent on police protection, legal and adjudication services, and corrections programs, including incarceration Crime career costs include: opportunity costs associated with

the criminal’s choice to engage in illegal, rather than legal and productive, activities Intangible costs include: indirect losses suffered by crime victims, including pain and suffering, decreased quality of life, and psychological distress To assess the safest cities, Money Geek analyzed crime data, including violent crimes such as murder, rape, and aggravated assault and property crimes such as home burglary and motor-vehicle theft. MoneyGeek calculated each city’s cost of crime and ranked the cities based on the cost of crime per capita. Researchers also quantified how much more violent crimes cost a community than property crimes. According to the researchers, crime and safety play a part in a community’s prosperity, income, and economic opportunity. Aside from the imminent danger of crime, people living in higher-crime areas see depressed home values and pay higher prices for crucial needs, including home, renters’, and auto insurance. “This ranking of McAllen as a safe city, based on the cost of crime in our community, is a testament to

the hard work of our McAllen Police Department and all of our lawenforcement agencies in our area who work quickly and diligently to not only protect from crime and prevent crime but also to resolve crime when it happens,” said McAllen Mayor Jim Darling. “Additionally, this community pulls together to support and assist our police officers with tips and information, which also help to keep our community safe and keep the effects of crime at bay, as much as possible.” McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez, agrees, stating that community policing and elected officials supporting the Department allow McAllen police officers to work together with community partners and others to keep the “brokenwindows theory” at bay. The brokenwindows theory is a criminological theory that states that visible signs of crime, anti-social behavior, and civil disorder create an urban environment that encourages further crime and disorder, including serious crimes. The full report with detailed findings and methodology can be found at: https://www.moneygeek. com/living/safest-cities/ •

• Finding God in the Pain • Isaiah 53:4-6

artin Luther, German professor of theology, composer, priest, monk, primary figure in the Protestant Reformation, lost a son. During her grief, his wife, Katharina, screamed at him, “Where was God when our son died?” Martin replied, “The same place He was when His son died. He was there watching and weeping.” Paul had a physical ailment that sometimes brought his ministry to a halt. He called it a thorn in his flesh. Paul asked God three times to remove it, but God did not. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, God simply said, “My grace is sufficient for you; my power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul was given no answer for his debilitating condition, just an assurance of the presence and power of his risen savior. Spiritual growth means coping

with anything the world brings, be it good or bad, with God’s help, asking for guidance in times of grief and despair and praising Him at all times and in all things. We need to avoid thinking that, perhaps, God is punishing us during times of trouble. Even though sin CAN bring suffering, not all suffering is due to sin. Jesus was sinless AND perfect but suffered greatly. Separate your grief from any sense of guilt, remain close to God, and let him mend your heart. Satan’s desire is to separate us from God, to destroy us in this world and the next. God is the source of our strength and our resolve, and we must resist Satan’s arguments. Ask God to bring you out of your pain. God only uses his waste bin for your sins. Everything else about you is used for his glory. Suffering and pain

James Moore and his wife, Jerrie, are the chaplains at Citrus Mobile in Edinburg. This is their second season there, but due to health concerns, they will be taking next season off, with plans to return to the ministry in the RGV as soon as God allows.

are not obstacles to being used by God. It is an opportunity to be used like never before. Suffering is evident throughout scripture. Joseph suffered for years and had done nothing to deserve such terrible abuse. In the end he was appointed to the right hand of Pharaoh. Esther became an orphan and endured unspeakable trials, yet her adoption by Mordecai set off events where she would become a queen in Persia and prevent a holocaust. David was forced into hiding, running from Saul, his lunatic father-in-law. He was homeless, living in caves in the wilderness. Paul would stand before kings, and entire nations but would suffer greatly for God. Each of these was used in powerful ways but also endured much hardship for their faith. None cursed God in their trials but poured out His praises and worshipped Him even in their darkest days. Pastor and best-selling author Tim Keller said, “Jesus lost all his glory

so that we could be clothed in it. He was shut out so that we could get access. He was bound and nailed so that we could be free. He was cast out so we could approach. He removed the only suffering that could really destroy you; being cast away from God. He took it on himself so that now all suffering that comes into your life will only make you great. A lump of coal under pressure becomes a diamond. And the suffering of a person in Christ only turns you into somebody gorgeous. In your pain, those you have shared your faith with will be watching. Are you going to walk the walk through the fire? You have told them Jesus is the light of your world; now your power has been cut. Can you glow in the dark? C. S. Lewis wrote, “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, and but shouts in our pain. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” You are never more powerful than when you minister to others during pain. •

Quick Pot Chicken Leg Quarters Submitted by Randy Hoelscher, The Border Cook

Mexican Dip • • • • • • • •

1 can (4.5 oz.) chopped ripe olives 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 can diced green chiles, hot or mild, your choice 1½ tablespoons cider vinegar 4 green onions, white and green parts, chopped 1 teaspoon kosher salt 2 fresh ripe tomatoes, peeled, seeded, and chopped 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Mix all of the ingredients gently, combining well. Place in a serving bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate at least 2 hours to thoroughly chill. Serve with tortilla chips. NOTE: Fresh jalapeños can be used instead of the canned chiles, if desired. This is more of a salsa than a true dip, so you need those large, sturdy “dipper” chips to avoid dripping. • Lifelong foodie, restaurant reviewer, cooking teacher, and summer Iowan, Sandy Olson spends the Winter-Texan season at Palm Shadows RV Park in Donna. I admit I am a Quick Pot junkie. I absolutely love mine. While I usually write about

Mexican or Tex-Mex dishes, today I’m featuring a simple recipe for a chicken dish good for an everyday dinner. Because it uses a Quick Pot pressure cooker, it is done in a jiffy. This recipe makes from two to four leg quarters in my six-quart multi-cooker. • 2 - 4 chicken-leg quarters • 2 -3 tsp. Worcestershire sauce • Prepared chicken rub – to taste • 12 oz. beer • Barbecue sauce Clean and trim the chicken legs, removing excess fat and skin. Sprinkle and rub (or brush) the Worcestershire sauce on the meat, and then sprinkle with your favorite chicken-rub mixture. Place the trivet in the Quick Pot and add a can of beer. Distribute the chicken in the cooking pot and cover. Set the Quick Pot for high heat and the timer for 15 minutes. When done, turn off the pot and naturally release the pressure. While the pressure releases, move your oven rack to the second shelf and turn the broiler on to 450 degrees. Cover a cookie sheet with foil or parchment paper. Slather the barbecue sauce on the chicken and place in the broiler for about 5 minutes. Flip the chicken, add sauce, if required, and broil five minutes more. You’re all done—moist, juicy chicken with crispy skin, done in a flash! Buen apetito! • Randy Hoelscher is a transplanted Texan living in the Rio Grande Valley. He enjoys being “The Border Cook,” spreading the word about Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine on his website, TheBorderCook.com, as well as on Facebook: The Border Cook.

Classic Focaccia

ocaccia is an ancient flatbread that has risen again (no pun intended) recently in popularity! Seasoned with just olive oil and sea salt, it is surprisingly easy to make. The addition of fresh rosemary or other aromatic dry herbs, such as like herbes de Provence, will enhance its flavor nicely. Bon Appétit! •

• 3¼ cups all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon kosher salt • ½ teaspoon active dry yeast • 1¾ cups warm water • 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for greasing pan

• 1½ teaspoons coarse sea salt • Minced fresh rosemary leaves, or herbes de Provence, for garnish (optional)

• • •

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, kosher salt and yeast. Add the warm water to the flour mixture and stir until all the flour is incorporated and a sticky dough forms. (the dough will be very wet dough; no kneading required.) Pour 2 tablespoons oil into a medium bowl. Transfer the dough to the bowl, turn to coat, and cover tightly with a lid or plastic wrap. Place in the refrigerator to rest for at least 24 hours or for up to 2 days. When it’s time to bake, brush the inside of a 9-by-13-inch sheet pan with oil. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and transfer to the prepared pan. Using your hands, spread the dough out as much as possible, adding oil to the dough if needed to keep it from sticking. (Don’t stress if the dough doesn’t cover the full pan; it will once it relaxes and rises.) Place the dough in a warm place and let rise until about doubled in bulk. The rising time will vary considerably depending on the season. (In the summer, it may take only 20 minutes for the dough to warm up and rise; in the winter, it can take 1 hour or more.) When the dough is ready, it will be room temperature, fluffy and fully spread out on the sheet pan. Heat the oven to 450 degrees. Using your palms, pat down the focaccia to an even thickness of about 1 inch, then, using your fingertips, dimple the entire dough. Drizzle it with the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil. Sprinkle the entire surface of the focaccia evenly with the sea salt and herbs, if using. Bake, rotating once front to back, until the top is evenly golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Transfer the focaccia on the baking sheet to a wire rack to cool, then slide out of the pan. Enjoy it hot. Note: Focaccia is a bread that deteriorates in quality after the first day. If you have some left over, wrap it tightly in plastic and store at room temperature for another day. Day-old focaccia is great for making croutons or ground into bread crumbs for use in meatballs and the like. •
