From seeing our RV-resort managers and activity directors to hosting our Converted and WinterTexan friends at our TASTE of Supper Club to seeing our volunteer 1st Responders from across the Rio Grande Valley, we’ve had a ball seeing so many of our dear friends. Each week, we’ll spotlight one of our Winter Texans or Converted Texan. These individuals have an extraordinary story or are making an impact in the RGV by serving others in some special way.

Lenore Combs of Sunshine Country Club Estates is getting ready for National Wreaths Across America Day when she will help lead the Opening Ceremony at Pendleton Park in Harlingen. Following the ceremony, she and other volunteers from the Veterans’ Memorial Project Committee (VMPC) will head to local cemeteries to lay hundreds of wreaths atop veterans’ tombstones. The mission of the ceremony, and of the VMPC, said Combs, is “to remember the fallen, honor those who served, and teach the children.”

Lenore Combs She and her husband, John--who both served in the Air force--helped plan the first local National Wreaths Across America Day event last December and were able to cover nine Harlingen cemeteries. “One of my favorite moments was the surprise of how many people showed up at the opening ceremony,” Combs said. “That was pretty astonishing. We put out 200 chairs, and people were standing. It was stuffed.” Combs hopes to grow the ceremony Valleywide and has already begun reaching out to other cities. Wreaths Across America Day is currently celebrated at 1,600 locations throughout the United States and abroad. To find local veterans to honor with a wreath, she and volunteers--who range from Girl Scout troops to churches to American Legion members--call cemeteries to ask where these patriots are buried. “They say a veteran dies two times: the physiological death and the second death when nobody remembers them,” said Combs. “So it’s very important to us to help get the message out.” Combs invites the community to check out the VMPC website (harlingenveterans.com) and to volunteer for their events, which also include a Veterans Day and Memorial Day tribute. Wreaths can be purchased and donated on the website for $15. Wreaths Across America Day in Harlingen will be held this year at 11 a.m. Saturday, December14 at Pendleton Park, 1425 Morgan Boulevard. National Wreaths Across America Day Happening December 14 in Harlingen Special to Welcome Home RGV

ational Wreaths Across America Day, Saturday, the 14th of December 2019, will take place again in the Harlingen area this year. There will be an Opening Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial at Pendleton Park, 1425 Morgan Boulevard in Harlingen. Participants then may go to their cemeteries for the wreath-laying portion. Wreaths-Out Day is scheduled for Saturday, January 4, 2020, at 11 a.m. at your cemetery of choice. Harlingen-area cemeteries are focusing on the City of Harlingen Cemetery at F Street and the Ashland Memorial Park. If your loved one is interred here or at a nearby or private cemetery, obtaining a wreath for them is possible via our Will-Call Program. See Harlingenveterans.com for more information on how to order wreaths. We are reaching out to other cities and towns interested in starting/continuing this program to please call Wreath Across America, and we will help you get started after you are assigned your location code . Your remembrance wreath is handcrafted from the tips of the American

balsam fir tree (grown in Maine) and hand tied with a red-velvet bow to ensure the legacy of duty, honor, service, and sacrifice so the veteran is never forgotten. In fact, we met a lady from Maine last year while we were fundraising locally who used to volunteer to make these wreaths. She shared her story. This is a free event and open to all. We welcome participation from schools, clubs, and civic and religious groups.

To volunteer and coordinate with a local cemetery, sponsor a wreath or fundraise, you may contact us on how WAA fundraising works. Help us insure that we reach our goal to place a wreath on every veteran’s grave. WAA is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. It was started in Maine by the business Morrill Worcester in 1992

and has now expanded. The mission of Remember, Honor, and Teach is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December, not only at Arlington but at hundreds of veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states. RV-park and resort operators have spent the summer modernizing and updating facilities in preparation for the 2019-2020 Winter Texan season. Eldorado Acres, for example, has a new swimming pool and hot tub. “We’re hoping everyone brings their bathing suits and puts them to good use!” says Sandy Rogers, activity director for the park. Shirley shares they are seeing an uptick in first timers, with an estimated 40 new winter visitors scheduled to arrive at Eldorado Acres. Shirley helped spread the word about wintering in South Texas while working at a K.O.A. in Bar Harbor over the summer, and she was convincing. “I have two coworkers coming down to winter with us,” she says. Bentsen Grove Resort, also in Palmview, reports visitors are already arriving to spend the winter in South Texas. “It’s looking pretty good. People are coming in daily,” says Kathy Tyler, co activity director for Bentsen Grove. Planning activities for visitors to the Rio Grande Valley begins months in advance. Kathy’s counterpart, Peggy Creach, began working on the 20192020 activities calendar during the previous season. Bentsen Grove is known for their dances, which include a mandatory rendition of Wipe Out by The Surfaris. During this tune, partygoers are notorious for flopping down on the dance floor, arms and legs flailing in the air. Pharr South in Pharr is known for Thursday Jam Sessions, which begin in January. One of the activity directors for Pharr South, M.J. Johnson, shares, “We have wonderful musicians, and the hall is full of people enjoying the music. Everybody comes from all over the Valley to be involved in our jam sessions.” In addition to the jam sessions,

M.J. is already looking ahead to New Year’s Eve. Last year, the retirement community hosted a pajama-themed night to ring in the New Year; this year’s theme is Texas Rodeo. M.J.’s husband, Randy Hoelscher, who says his ‘job’ is to support M.J. in everything she does, will serve as D.J., and he has a few more fun things planned for the night’s celebration, including roping!

As the parks and resorts continue to prepare for the season, their activity directors report winter visitors are arriving from across North America, including Canada, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and South Dakota. Shirley shares, “My husband and I have found out that it’s fun down here, it’s more economical down here, and everybody’s here to have a good time!”. • Chaplains Marty and Edna Ziegler with Christian Resort Ministries led the prayer before lunch was served.

Dan Miller’s Cowboy Music Revue rolls into Harlingen Friday, February 21, 2020, with their award-winning variety show. This talented group from the Buffalo Bill Center in Wyoming has been featured on RFD-TV, The Travel Channel, ESPN, and GAC. Their music ranges from Americana and Western to bluegrass and gospel.

HCA’s fifth show, Sail On: Beach Boys Tribute, will be a lively tribute to “America’s Band” Wednesday, March 4, 2020. Juanito Gonzalez Comes to Life at Pharr Community Theater I November 2 Special to Welcome Home RGV

n 1997, while living and learning in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Pedro Garcia worked in the local communitytheater arena. (Garcia is a native of Hidalgo, Texas.) He was asked by a individuals at a literacy center to create and perform a short children’s story, set on día de los muertos, and have it address the importance of reading and writing, starting at an early age. Garcia asked the organizer, “How about I write a play, a monologue, since I’m an actor?” and that’s how The Life and Times of Juanito Gonzalez came to fruition.

“It’s a show that is not scary but inspiring, funny and heartfelt.” • Pedro Garcia • “At first I wrote a 20-minute monologue about an old man who had recently passed but on November 2 comes back to his tombstone at the cemetery as a skeleton,” said Garcia. “He arrives to straighten out the place because his relatives are coming to visit him, but before everyone gets there on this special day, and with help from the magical sky, he becomes young again. He tells his story from the time he was a kid and shares about learning all the important things in life, like buttoning his shirt, riding his bike, brushing his teeth, having good manners, and lots more.” The play, also written and directed by Garcia, is geared people of all ages and families. “Back then, the play

was 20 minutes in duration,” Garcia said. “Now it’s about 50 minutes and moves quickly, with lots of energy as the character takes us through his life, including working, harvesting crops to help the family as a boy, going to school and then to college, getting married, and becoming a school teacher.” The play also covers Juanito’s son going off to the Vietnam War. All of this happened while Juanita was raising a great family, based on his continuous quest for knowledge and love.” Garcia is the sole performer. “I have an imaginary dog appear in the story whose name was Solovino, loosely translated to “he arrived on his own,” said Garcia. “It’s a show that is not scary but inspiring, funny, and

heartfelt. It encourages living a good life and furthering your knowledge and includes some fun rhymes/dimes.” Pedro Garcia has been an active member of the Screen Actors Guild since 1994. He has directed and acted in over 150 plays and films since 1987. He has appeared in films and TV shows, including Tejano, Queen of the South, Fast & Furious Five, Breaking Bad, Halt and Catch Fire, and Mad Love. Currently he resides in Pharr and is the artistic director for Pharr Community Theater Co. He is represented by Pastorini-Bosby Talent Agency in Houston. The play will be performed Saturday, November 2, at Pharr Community Theater, 213 W. Newcombe Avenue,

very once in a while, I turn on a little box and talk to my family in North Carolina while I sit comfortably in my chair in Minnesota. There are no wires connected to my little box, but not only can I hear my daughter’s voice, I can see her face as we talk. Everyone reading this understands that I am Skyping, and no one is surprised or impressed that I do it. I remember back in grade school, one of our Weekly Reader articles addressed the prediction that someday

we would place our phone calls to a person instead of to a place. It went on to predict that we would also have video on our phones. It all seemed too crazy to believe. Now it is routine. Our generation has been present to observe the greatest amount of change ever to happen over one lifetime in the history of the Earth. We have seen men on the moon, cars driving around on Mars, televisions with 300 channels that all work, food cooked by microwave, and now, even cars that drive themselves. We encounter a host of things, procedures, tasks, and wonders that were never part of our world in earlier days. We have had more training and experience in the art of dealing with change than any other people ever alive. And yet, change is hard. We like the music we have always liked. We

sit in the same pew every Sunday in church. We watch the same channel’s news every evening. We eat the same old familiar foods. I bet most of us even sit in the same favorite chair when we relax at home. Somehow, there is comfort in the familiar. Studies show that change causes stress, our bodies often responding in unhealthy ways. I don’t like crazy, wild hormone surges. I like my peace. Perhaps our reluctance to change, then, even when we know we handle change well, is due to our need to retain a small bit of space just for ourselves. We need a place in our mind and soul that is still comfortable and free of stress. We are tough. We can deal with change. Just don’t move my chair. I’m just sayin’. •

fter 25 years, it isn’t any wonder that the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival is ready to SHAKE things up! The RGVBF is keeping things fresh and exciting with many changes this year, including a new home, the Harlingen Convention Center, 701 Harlingen Heights. The festival has also added new sites to its list of field-trip destinations and redesigned its Photo Track, a group of field trips customized specifically to the new breed of birder, the Hybrid Birder-Photographer. Welcome Home RGV’s Taste of Supper Club event is the culmination of weekly gatherings held from April through October, aptly named Summer Supper Club. Club members enjoyed a meal at a predetermined local restaurant each Thursday afternoon. Taste of Supper Club was held October 24 at Texas Trails RV Park in Pharr. Sixteen restaurants shared samplings of their specialties, and over 200 people attended. After enjoying a meal, the dance floor heated up as Curt James entertained the crowd. Taste of Supper Club concluded with the fabulous door prize drawings.

MOSTHistory Presents Día de los Muertos: Recuerdos y Ofrendas November 2 Special to Welcome Home RGV

he Museum of South Texas History (MOSTHistory), a museum that preserves and presents the borderland heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico, invites the community to discover a regional and unique tradition: Día de los Muertos, Saturday, November 2 from 4 – 10 p.m. Día de los Muertos: Recuerdos y Ofrendas will celebrate and commemorate the traditions of religious and spiritual worship. Observing these traditions, MOSTHistory presents an annual community altar exhibit in the Courtyard Gallery that will feature 11 altars intended to tell stories, share memories, and honor the lives of the dearly departed. The exhibit will be on display November 2 - 17. The Mystery Altar, sponsored by the museum’s Collections Department, will feature vintage photographs of unidentified people from the photograph collection in the Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives. The altar will honor the nameless and carry a preservation message about the importance of documenting family photographs. An additional altar will be featured in the museum’s Grand Lobby, under the stairway. Constructed by Elizabeth Puentes and her Edinburg CISD Longoria Middle School art students, the altar will honor the legendary Rogelio Botello Rios, a radio and television personality who passed away in 2017. Rios worked in radio and TV broadcasting for 48 years, including as host of the popular music variety show, Aquí Rogelio. There will be plenty of crafts for children and parents to enjoy together. The Discovery Room will have sugarskull decorating for $3. Free crafts

such as the Mini Altar Craft, which you can decorate and take home, will be available in several of the museum spaces. Don’t forget to stop behind the stairs and make a paper flower to either keep as a memento or add to the colorful Community Flower Display by the wrought-iron stair railing. Find another free activity for families in the Classroom, where UTRGV Book Buzz will present a Día de los Muertos puppet show and activity. Be sure to take photographs in front of the lifesized monarch wings, eight-foot-tall flower archway, panteón (cemetery) display in Legacy Park, and of the Mexican revolutionary living history group Los Liberadores. Also, explore the signature Rio Grande Legacy Exhibition and discover the shared regional history. Tradition and talent will be on display on the main performance stage as musicians and dancers from the Valley and beyond interpret folkloric songs. The performances will open with live music from the Edinburg North High School Mariachi Oro. Local folklórico groups will follow, including Mission Parks and Recreation Ballet Folklórico, PSJA North Grupo Folklórico Ichtequi and Las Palmas Community Center Ballet Folklórico. For the first time at MOSTHistory, the UTRGV Latino Theatre Initiative will bring giant puppets, known in Mexico as mojigangas, and take the stage to dance and perform for the crowd. After the mojigangas, Edinburg dance group Conceptos Entidad Dancística will perform while musical group Totome plays its music. Totome is a brotherand-sister group from Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico, that mixes traditional Mexican

music with electronic elements and worldly instruments. Epi and Friends will continue the show by delivering traditional and South Texas fusion music to your ears. Epi Martinez is one of the original members of Elida Reyna and Frijoles Románticos. He will perform with his mother, Cruz, a pioneer of conjunto music. Epi and Friends brings talented musicians together and will feature Bonifacio “Bone” Jordan of the legendary Steve Jordan y Los Hermanos Jordan. More dancing will follow, with performances by Grupo Folklórico Jaguar Economedes, RGV Folklórico Dance Company, Edinburg High School Ballet Folklórico Kuxtal, and Grupo Folklórico Juvenil de Palmview. Stick around for a special performance by Wendy Lara as La Catrina Garbancera. Lara will deliver a Spanish monologue telling the story of La Catrina and her

significance in Día de los Muertos. Bring your appetite, and plenty of cash, as there will be artisan and food vendors inside and outside the museum. Returning this year is Qweenie RGV food truck serving up uniquely Valley hot dogs. Other favorite menu items include guisados en olla de barro (stews) by Emmanuel Banquets, pan dulce (sweet bread) by La Mexicana Bakery, calaveritas de chocolate (chocolate skulls), pozole, and tamales. E&B Elotes will have elote en vaso (corn in cup), roasted whole ear corn, mango en flor (flower-cut mango), coco rayado, and fresas con crema (strawberries in cream). received unsettling news of the situation in Jerusalem: faith was being sorely tested; the people were enduring blame, shame, and disgrace; their defenses were broken-down, and they were under siege. His heart was broken. He approached God, fasting and interceding on the basis of God’s covenant and mercy. He pleaded guilty to national and generational sins, taking the blame himself. He recognized that Israel’s scattering among the nations was the consequence of their sin. He prayed for the redeemed, reminding God that he had promised to gather them and restore their place and position in the world, if the people would repent (Deuteronomy 4:1-40). Nehemiah pleaded for prosperity to help his family and friends. And he asked for mercy with the King. It was a successful intercession. Nehemiah was granted the time and funding to lead the restoration movement. The favor and resources of the King were at his disposal, but the project had opposition. The restoration team was ridiculed and accused of rebellion. The adversaries stirred up strife, sabotaged the work, attacked the crew, and plotted murder. Nehemiah proclaimed that God would do it, under budget and ahead of schedule. And because of their resistance, antagonism, and obstruction, the dissenters would get no credit for the work or property within the restored city. The faith community united

and began the repairs. They came from all quarters of the city, from every occupation. Each group took responsibility to rebuild a section. The workers considered their labor an offering unto the Lord. Half worked at the effort, while the other half ran defense in prayer, watching…and with weapons. They finished in 52 days. Everybody attended a revival at the temple, with worship, reading the Word and preaching. They repented and acknowledged God’s provision and care for them through many generations. They took an oath to honor and glorify God in everything. They cast out corrupt leaders and restored true worship of the One True and Living God. Sin doesn’t reach a national or generational level without first starting at the personal level. The key to turning a bad situation around is always repentance. Start with, “Father, forgive me...” and fill in the blanks as he leads you. •

In January, hundreds of Winter Texans flooded the HCISD Performing Arts Center on a cold morning to attend a performance of Mamma Mia! specifically taking the stage for Winter Texans across the RGV. As a result of such a warm turnout earlier in the year, HCISD’s new Harlingen Performing Arts Conservatory presents RGV Winter Texans with a performance of In the Heights exclusively for them. Happening tomorrow, on the spooky morning of October 31 at 10:00 a.m., the HCISD Performing Arts Center will welcome any and all Winter Texans to dress up in their Halloween costumes for doughnuts, coffee, and a $10 admission to a musical they will remember forever. In the Tony-Award-winning musical In the Heights, we encounter the many colorful residents of Washington Heights, a New York City neighborhood on the brink of change. Usnavi, a firstgeneration Dominican-American corner bodega owner, and his friends and family are dealing with the pressures of rising rents and closing neighborhood businesses. As one family struggles to figure out how to pay for an Ivy League tuition for their brilliant and hardworking daughter, a young woman is trying to put a down payment on a new apartment, and Usnavi is trying to get back to the Dominican Republic to reconnect with his roots after the death of his parents. In Washington Heights, community is everything, and we see how each of these individuals struggles to survive and how these same individuals come together as a community to mourn their losses and rejoice in their triumphs.

Over the course of the show, we see the hard-working residents of Washington Heights grapple with love and lust and identity and racism, all while the prospect of a winning lottery ticket hangs in the air, potentially changing the livelihood of the people and the community forever. This revolutionary new musical combines Latin rhythms and dance with hip-hop lyrics to tell a captivating story about what it means to chase your dreams as you cling to your roots and to celebrate the community from which you came. In addition to the culturally moving story line and hip-moving Latin music, the set is straight off the Broadway stage and is accompanied by a full, live professional orchestra. ach year, the International Museum of Art & Science celebrates Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, on a grand scale, with community altars, cultural activities, a Catrina contest, and entertainment. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Department of Anthropology and UTRGV Ballet Folklorico will participate again this year, adding entertainment and a dimension of learning. The museum will come alive on the Day of the Dead, Saturday, November 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a colorful celebration. Dr. Servando Z. Hinojosa, faculty member in the Department of Anthropology at UTRGV, presents a special lecture, “Mexico, Bones, and Life,” at 2:00 p.m. Dr. Hinojosa specializes in Mesoamerica and folk-art medicine and is the coordinator of the Anthropology Forum at the IMAS. Mexico has, for many years, been associated with skulls and skeletal images. These make up a large part of its visual and archaeological inventory, but why have people in the past used these symbols, and how has their meaning endured? This presentation will walk through some of the skeletal pages of Mexico’s past and address these questions. ave you heard of a condition called myasthenia gravis? It is a disease that causes a person’s muscles to become weak. Some of the signs and symptoms of possible “MG” can be a result of other diseases. Myasthenia gravis patients may have a droopy eyelid, experience double-vision, have difficulty swallowing food or medication, and have slurred speech and/or limited facial expressions. In severe episodes, the patient may have trouble breathing, which can be life threatening if not promptly treated. Valley residents can learn more about this potentially disabling condition by coming to free Myasthenia Gravis Support Group meetings being held at the Knapp Conference Center in Weslaco the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. Meetings are open to all MG patients, family members, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and other interested Valley residents. Individuals in the Harlingen area participated at nine cemeteries and several private, familyowned cemeteries. The Veterans Memorial Project Committee, the Veterans Advisory Board, and the City of Harlingen encourage our neighboring towns and cities to get on board. National WAA Day is an event every December dedicated to remembering the sacrifices veterans have made in wars since the American Revolution. Congress designated WAA Day December 13, 2008. Each year, the world’s largest annual parade and escort begins its trek from Harrington, Maine, to Arlington National Cemetery, to all 50 states, and, finally, to Harlingen. These volunteer trucking companies use refrigerated trucks to transport our wreaths, and last year the wreaths arrived fresh and stunning. WAA pays tribute in veterans’ cemeteries in all 50 states, while we attend the event in our local cemeteries. The mission includes raising awareness and encouraging more people to

remember. Remember the fallen, honor those who serve and their families, and teach the children. Each year, a new theme is chosen to help volunteers and supporters focus their messaging and outreach in their own communities. The theme for 2019 is “Everyone Plays a Part.” The inspiration for this was a recommendation made by 10-yearold Miles Worcester, grandson of the founder of WAA. Last May while in Washington, D.C. for an event, Miles saw a U.S. service member in uniform at the hotel where he was staying. As he always does, Miles walked up to the gentleman, reached out to shake his hand, and thanked him for his service. His response was simple and impactful: “Thank you…everyone plays a part.” Miles went directly to his grandmother, WAA Director Karen Worcester, to tell her that he believed this statement would be the perfect theme because, he said, “Those serving in the military are doing their part, but it is our part as Americans to remember and honor them, and that’s what WAA does.” Miles went on to say, “It makes me feel proud to be an American” to know how many people across the country come together each December to Remember, Honor and Teach. •

Nachos con Pollo Submitted by Sandy Olson • • • • • • •

3 tablespoons olive oil ½ of a 14-oz. bag of flat tortilla chips ½ cup chopped green onion 1½ cups Mexican blend shredded cheese 1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic 1½ cups chunky salsa, mild or hot, optional 1 can (10-13 oz.) white meat chicken, drained

In a large frying pan, sauté the green onions and garlic in the olive oil until tender but not brown. Shred the chicken and stir into the pan, completely coating it with the oil. Place the tortilla chips on the bottom of a baking sheet covered with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spoon the chicken mixture evenly over the chips. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top. Bake for 10 minutes or until the cheese melts. Spoon the salsa over the top. Garnish, if desired, with salsa and more chopped fresh green onion and sliced black olives. NOTE: To keep your kitchen cool when it’s hot outside, you can bake these in smaller batches in a toaster or counter-top oven rather than heating your large oven. Makes 8-10 appetizer servings.

Valley Seasoned Potatoes Submitted by The Junior League of McAllen, Inc.

Serves 8-10 • ½ cup margarine • 1 heaping tablespoon seasoned salt mixture (see below) • 10 medium red potatoes, unpeeled and thinly sliced

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use a 2-quart casserole dish Melt margarine; add seasoned salt mixture. Dip potatoes in mixture; arrange in overlapping rows in glass dish; bake for 1 hour. Seasoned Salt Mixture: • 2 tablespoons celery salt • 2 tablespoons garlic powder • 2 tablespoons onion salt • 1½ teaspoons paprika

• 1¼ chili powder • ½ teaspoons pepper • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Combine all spices; sift together 3 or 4 times. Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cran-Raisin Cookies

This is a favorite cookie recipe of mine. These cookies are not only

delicious but they are also a bit more unconventional than your average chocolate chip or oatmeal cookie. Best of all, they are just as satisfying as a delightful dessert treat as they are a perfect compliment for your morning cup of Joe (no need to feel guilty - they are practically a granola bar)! If you like, feel free substitute the semi-sweet chocolate chips for white chocolate chips and/or the cran-raisins for traditional raisins. Happy baking! Bon Appétit! • MAKES ABOUT 4 DOZEN

• 2 sticks unsalted butter, softened • 2/3 cup granulated sugar • 2/3 cup packed light brown sugar • 2 large eggs • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 cups rolled oats • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips • 1 cup cran-raisins

Beat the butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar in a bowl with a mixer on medium speed until fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla; beat. Whisk the flour, rolled oats, baking soda, cinnamon and salt in a bowl. Add to the butter mixture and beat until just combined. Stir in the white chocolate chips and raisins. Refrigerate the bowl of cookie dough for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Using a small-medium scoop, place rounded tablespoons of dough onto parchment-lined baking sheets about 2 inches apart. Bake until the cookies are golden on the bottom, 12 to 15 minutes. Do not over-bake. Cool on the baking sheets, 10 minutes, then transfer to racks to finish cooling. •

he Museum of South Texas History launched a podcast, Stories from the Rio Grande, to share the history of South Texas and northeastern Mexico with the world. About 51 percent of the U.S. population listened to a podcast during the past year, according to the Podcast Insights-Nielsen surveys. To keep up with the times, the museum decided it was time to create a new channel where it could be accessible for all. The podcast was inspired by Sidedoor, a podcast by the Smithonsian, and was created to complement the Rio Grande Legacy exhibition at the museum, which currently displays a variety of historical artifacts. Stories from the Rio Grande supplements the exhibits and its artifacts, providing perspectives from local historians and Rio Grande Valley residents. The first season focuses on the rich history of Rio Grande Valley agriculture, explaining how the “Magic Valley” became a hub for packing sheds and a nexus of international commerce. The five-episode season features Neil Cassady, a former salesman for Griffin & Brand in McAllen, and Jimmy Henderson, the owner of Warren Produce in Edinburg. Cassady worked to promote and sell produce grown in the Valley that was shipped to grocery stores across the nation. He also saw the apocalyptical closure of the agricultural companies, including Griffin & Brand, throughout the Valley in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In the final episode, Henderson describes working his way up in the watermelon business, and how he’s managed to keep the locallyowned business alive. The second season focuses on Rio Grande Valley politics through a fascinating lens: interviews with the sons and daughters of elected officials. They share stories about how their

parents balanced family and public service, making history along the way. In the three episodes published so far, the daughter of former La Joya Mayor Billy Leo describes the good, the bad, and the ugly side of community relationships and its effect on politics, the son of the first mayor of reincorporated Rio Grande City discusses how his father’s commitment to the community lead to a life in politics, and four brothers describe their home life with a father who became the first Hispanic mayor of Edinburg. October 31, Halloween, is designated National Magic Day because that was the date, in 1926, when the most well-known magical entertainer in history, Harry Houdini, died under very mysterious circumstances. t is 1885 during the reign of Queen Victoria, and two ships from the British Empire set sail on the high seas for the imaginary kingdom of Rundoon. On one ship, The Neverland, three orphan boys encounter a smart and witty girl named Molly Aster, the daughter of an English lord and minister to the queen. Also on board is a trunk full of precious “starstuff” Molly has promised to protect. One of the orphans, known only as Boy, is bitter and unpleasant. Once he meets Molly, his lonely and miserable world is turned upside down. On the other ship, The Wasp, Molly’s father, the famous starcatcher, Lord Aster, guards a decoy trunk from pirates who are in search of treasure. The pirate captain, Black Stache, discovers the ruse and goes after The Neverland. A violent storm ensues, and Molly and the orphans find themselves trying to save the valuable trunk from Black Stache, his men, and both of the ships’ crews. The Neverland is torn asunder in the storm. In the midst of all the upheaval, Boy meets Black Stache, who gives him the name of Peter while trying to convince him to become a pirate. The trunk is almost in secure hands when, in order to

save himself from drowning, Peter rides it through the waves to a nearby island. And the adventures have only begun! What becomes of Molly, Peter, and the other lost boys? Why is everyone after the “starstuff” and what does it do? Does anyone—or anything—ever stop Black Stache and the pirates? Discover more than ever about these classic characters you thought you knew.
