blinked, and just like that, the season is coming to a close. It has been a whirlwind of fun--so much fun that the days seem to run together, and November seems like just yesterday. With April on the horizon, I start thinking about all the fun we’ll have over the summer months and about plotting and planning for next season. I’m excited about having some time to be creative, as that’s downright impossible once the season starts. I’m also really looking forward to our 2nd Annual Winter Texan Reunion Tour, where we pack up and head north for a few weeks to celebrate with those of you who come to see us. We will be participating in events, and hosting a few of our own, from Mitchell, South Dakota, to Henry, Illinois, to Davenport to Rice Lake and a few stops in between. We invite you to join us! Our mission is to spread the word about the Rio Grande Valley to anyone who will listen! Of course, you all are the best marketing tool the Valley has to promote our winters, as most folks come down simply because of word of mouth! So if your schedule allows, we invite you to bring friends to attend our events, which are really just parties to celebrate all of you! t was a perfect day for a cruise along the Rio Grande River Thursday, March 12. There was a slight breeze and partly overcast skies, making the river tour aboard the Riverside Dreamer riverboat very comfortable for 40 Winter and Converted Texans from local RV resorts. The adventure was a Welcome Home RGV-organized outing for South Texas Singles, a growing group of retirees who enjoy socializing and sharing outings with other singles. McAllen Art Walk to Kick Off South Texas Irish Festival April 4

Special to Welcome Home RGV

he South Texas Irish Festival is a free community event Saturday, April 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the McAllen Creative Incubator, 601 N. Main Street. STIF will bring the Irish cultural arts to the Rio Grande Valley via food, music, dance, and drink. This all-day event, sponsored by the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, will be the premiere of an annual festival that represents the Irish arts community of South Texas while promoting local culture, arts, and business. There will be continuous, electric entertainment by Dave Curley of Galway, Ireland, Antonio Santiago, Therese Honey, Joseph Carmichael, Catherine Koehler, and Jack Dingler, along with performances by McAllen Irish Arts and a fellow McA2 Incubator organization, the Colibri Children’s Choir. There will be exhibits and activities suitable for the whole family, including an Irish dance-dress showcase, an interactive art exhibit, live painting, scavenger hunt, crafts, and a Ceili (Irish dance party). Food and drink will represent the best of the Rio Grande Valley, spotlighting local breweries and

A kick-off music session will be held the night before, Friday, April 3, during the McAllen Art Walk at the Old Church Winery and the McAllen Creative Incubator, both on Main Street, from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. Visitors of all ages and levels are welcome to join in with an instrument or simply enjoy the entertainment and socializing. There will be a short Irish dance performance, followed by an after-party. McAllen Irish Arts is a new music and dance studio, directed by Angelika Eleni Gualberto, set in the McAllen Creative Incubator, a McAllen Chamber of Commerce initiative to promote arts in the Rio Grande Valley and local business in the McAllen Arts District. Retired teacher Vicki Chilcoat assisted in coordinating the day’s event, greeting and passing out name tags to those who signed up for the excursion. Chilcoat, who lost her husband five years ago, said she recently decided she was ready, as she puts it, to live again. Chilcoat, who spends the winter at Tropic Star RV Resort in Alamo, enjoys line dancing with friends at her park and other local resorts. By park-hopping, she says, “We can line dance like three times on a Tuesday.” She adds that it’s a great way to meet people. “There is a real need for events focusing on singles,” Chilcoat said. Welcome Home RGV recognized this need, as well; hence the creation of South Texas Singles. The RiversideClub-Dreamer-Cruise outing is a first for the South Texas Singles. The two-

hour cruise of the Rio Grande, which included a visit to the Anzalduas Dam (the stretch of the privately built border wall), bird sightings, and details about the river and its history bordering Texas and Mexico was followed by lunch and a live music performance at the Riverside Club. The initial South-Texas-Singles gatherings started out small; about eight singles attended the first gettogether breakfast at Rudy’s Country Store & Bar-B-Q in Pharr. The breakfast meet-ups take place the second and fourth Thursday of each month at Rudy’s. ur musical heritage is rich, diverse, and constantly evolving. Likewise, the volunteer-driven, nonprofit Harlingen Concert Association (HCA) constantly evolves, while remaining firmly committed to engaging exceptional artists and presenting high-quality shows. This season, for example, the HCA lineup ranged from Broadway tunes and beach-party music to classical compositions, country music, pop, Americana, and Scottish music. We enjoyed many fun trips down memory

lane and experienced the joy of discovering new melodies, creative interpretations, and musical styles that warm the heart. 020: Visions of Beauty is the theme of the annual Harlingen Flower Show, March 21 and 22, at Harlingen Cultural Arts Center. It is sponsored by Harlingen’s garden clubs. Garden-club members will showcase their floral designs and artistic crafts. Horticulture grown by members will be displayed in the Center’s large gallery. The largest known display of labeled, blooming, native specimens from Deep South Texas will be on exhibition. Local experts will be available to answer questions about the native plants. Easy-to-grow houseplants and other items will be on sale at good prices, and garden-related items will be included in a raffle. Native plants from Harlingen native-plant nurseryman Mike Heep will be available for sale, and knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about them. Presentations begin at 2 p.m. each day, at no charge, in the small lecture room. Seating is first-come, first-

their relationship and perspective,” said Christina Mild, Flower-Show chair. “This is a beautiful presentation, providing insight to master-naturalist training, their wide scope of experience, and the incredible diversity of ways in which members volunteer throughout the Valley.” The public is welcome. nother season in the Rio Grande Valley is quickly drawing to a close as many Winter Texans prepare to return to our northern homes. Not only have we spent the past few months soaking up the balmy rays of the sun, but we have also basked in the warm glow of the welcoming smiles of area residents who have wholeheartedly welcomed us into their communities. They have embraced us just like we would for a special guest entering our home. The whole RGV is like a Disneyland for seniors. There are so many exciting activities--places to eat and shop and things to get involved in--that the winter season is almost over before you realize it. No visit to the RGV is complete without a visit to South Padre Island; it is a vacationer’s dream. How I Found the Graves of John and Nancy Ream

ne afternoon this past week, as I revisited a few of the family files I’ve kept over the last 30 years of my genealogy pursuits--most handwritten and/or printed email correspondence from the 1990s-I happened across one sheet that took me back a good 20 years, an email I sent to my wife (née Ream from the German Riehm) in Texas about one particular intrepid exploit, a 225-mile drive from Columbia, Maryland, northwest to Kittanning, Pennsylvania, in a 1988 no-frills Ford Escort with a poorly working heater and a proclivity for shutting Pastor E.B. La Lomita Chapel (Mission, Texas) March 2020

A small but iconic attraction in the Rio Grande Valley is La Lomita Chapel in Mission. La Lomita translates to "Little Hill" in English. Located on a low hill near the Rio Grande River, the chapel was the inspiration for the city's name when founded in 1908. The original chapel was built in 1865 and has been rebuilt at least twice. The site is open to visitors, and Catholic services are occasionally held at the chapel. La Lomita Chapel is located three miles south of Expressway 83 on FM 1016 in Mission. •

recently attended the funeral of a young lady of my own generation. I say young because she was a year younger than I am, and since I refuse to be old in spite of all the evidence, by definition, she then has to be young. I did not know her well. She was a person out at the edge of my life, someone I only encountered from time to time. In fact, outside of her family, she was a nobody. I don’t mean that negatively, but if you Googled her, you probably would not have found her.

She hadn’t done anything to make herself famous. She wasn’t rich. She led a very normal, plain life. If you passed her on the street, she wouldn’t have impressed you in any way. And yet, at that funeral, we heard about what a great mother, grandmother, and friend she was to everyone. We learned of her generosity, her compassion, her enjoyment of life, and her willingness to share that enjoyment. We learned about her heart for people, her caregiving, and her love for family. I have met a few famous people in my life. None particularly impressed me. None of them changed my own life in any positive way. None of them offered to make any investment in me, as a person. All those people who were “somebody” didn’t have much to contribute. If you think about it, most of us have

grown up in our small towns among a lot of nobodies. Those are the people who invested in us, who helped us grow up to be decent people, who loved us through our hard times. The people I count as foundational, as friends, as my support in life, are all nobodies. And if I have done well, maybe I, too, will be recognized by others as one of the nobodies who was instrumental in their lives. One thing I have learned is that greatness is often not big; it is the accumulation of small. It is making the little investments in people that bring a smile, a warm feeling, or that, in some way, change a life. Greatness is being there. Greatness is caring. Greatness is giving. It is setting self aside in favor of others. That is the ultimate way to achieve ‘nobodyness.’ I’m just sayin’. •

ocal motorcycle clubs escorted the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Vietnam Wall from Brooks County, just north of Hidalgo County, to the City of Mission. The convoy made a stop at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Taps was played before the procession continued on to the Mission Event Center. Sections of the exhibit were ceremoniously removed from the trailer, as veterans saluted and civilians stood with their hands over their hearts as a show of respect for those whose names appear on the Wall. Winter Texan Jim Schuyler, a U.S. Navy veteran, shared why he participated as an escort with

the Patriot Guard Riders: "To honor veterans and the ones who died." The City of Mission hosted the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Vietnam Wall March 12 - 15. For more information, visit americanveteranstravelingtribute. com. •

aleidoscope of Diamonds, the 11th Annual Llano Grande Quilt Show, came to a “sparkly” conclusion with the drawing for a Janome sewing machine generously donated by Llano Grande Resort. The winner was Jan Alvestad, a Winter Texan from Williams, Iowa, and Texas Trails RV Resort. She became interested in quilting in the 1970s when she saw some quilts made in the 30s at auctions. She started quilting around that time but really got going when she retired in 2006. She is active in two local guilds and said she truly loves making quilts and other fun things. We are so happy Jan won the sewing machine and will put it to good use. The Bee wants to express its gratitude to the Hynes Group for supporting the Llano Bee Quilt Show with such a great donation and the use of the

Hynes Event Center. February 23, at the Park Show-andTell event, the drawing for the 2020 Opportunity Quilt, Kaleidoscope of Diamonds, was held. The winner was Llano resident Cher May of West Branch, Michigan. She said she was very happy to win the beautiful quilt. The colors remind her of Mardi Gras! The People's Choice Best of Show was awarded to Monica Myers for her exquisite paper-pieced quilt, Quarry Treasure. In addition to being an excellent quilter and long armer, Monica has been the Llano Bee president for five years. Thank you, Monica, for your outstanding leadership. feet into the ocean while soaking up the warm rays of the sun. You can stop for a drink at Clayton’s Bar, the biggest beach bar in all of Texas. It’s one of many places on the Island where you can listen to an excellent variety of live music and make new friends with people you meet from all over the United States, Canada, and other foreign nations. South Padre Island and Port Isabel offer a variety of shopping, sightseeing, and restaurants, sure to appeal to the palate of most vacationers. We enjoyed a swashbuckling time aboard the Pirate Ship as the crew entertained us with their many antics. We went out with the Dolphin Whisperer and were amazed at how his dog could lead him to where the dolphins were, allowing us to get some great pictures. The view from atop the lighthouse in Port Isabel is just short of breathtaking. In Brownsville, where we winter, there is a constant beehive of activity. The Camille Playhouse offers a wide range of live theater. The sparkling and beautifully decorated Christmas houses at Dean Port Park gave us many enjoyable hours and actually brought us closer to home, as the many displays rekindled cherished Christmas memories. A visit to the Gladys Porter Zoo is a definite must, and it’s a place you have to visit several times to take it all in. There is such a variety of places to eat in Brownsville (and the entire RGV, for that matter) that you could get by without ever having to cook your own supper. Immersing yourself in the excitement of Charro Days is an unequivocal delight. The wonderful folklorica dances performed by local school children at Sams Stadium brought a sea full of joyful smiles to the audience. The Friday-night, illuminated parade consisted of many beautifully adorned floats and bands in colorful clothing. The Grand International Parade Saturday was led by the magnificently costumed Charros riding their mighty steeds. Both parades made a lasting impression on us. In San Benito, we went to the Freddie Fender Museum and were duly impressed with the exhibits there. We also went out to the cemetery to see his memorial. We spent a very enjoyable day watching the reenactment of the three major battles of the Texas War for Independence that were meticulously performed at the Fairgrounds. The list goes on of the many marvelous experiences we have enjoyed this winter. Now it’s time to return to the real world and reunite with family and friends. We can regale them for many hours as we recount the wonderful memories we bring home with us from the RGV. •

Migration by Many Wings Monarch Fest 2020 March 21 in McAllen Special to Welcome Home RGV

Native milkweeds are becoming more scarce in the wild, due to land development and use of herbicides. The disappearance of native milkweeds may be the greatest challenge monarchs face for survival. In order to give monarchs a fighting chance, we need to reverse this trend and restore the native landscape, starting one backyard at a time. In Deep South Texas, our most common native milkweed is the Zizotes Milkweed (Asclepias oenortheroides).

uinta Mazatlán welcomes the spring arrival of monarch butterflies with Monarch Fest 2020! Our fascination with monarch butterflies-their orange, black, and white wings quivering our recognition--goes back in time. The indigenous peoples who lived around the monarch’s wintering grounds (present-day Michoacán, Mexico) associated the butterflies with change. They were the souls of the dead; departed souls returning to visit. They were reapers, arriving when crops were ready to harvest. They were depicted as sunrays leaving the winter sun. These perceptions reflect an ancient phenomenon…mass migration. Every fall, spurred by changing day length, temperature, and milkweed quality, hundreds of millions of monarchs across North America begin their journey south. Using sun and magnetic compasses, they fly roughly 20 miles a day as they make their way to Mexico. At night, the monarchs cluster together in roosts, a behavior that may help protect them against predators on cold nights. Once in the mountains of Michoacán, the butterflies roost in the shelter of the endemic Oyamel fir trees. Those very monarchs, some having potentially flown over 2,500 miles south, are the ones that begin the journey north in the spring. However, they will not make it all the way back. By March, monarchs arrive in the southern border regions of the United States, looking for milkweeds to lay their eggs and then die. Each female monarch can lay hundreds of eggs yet only a fraction make it to adulthood. Two successive generations are born, fly north, and reproduce. All told, it takes four generations to complete the entire migration north

and south; some stay in the United States and others make it to southern Canada. Some of each make the journey south to Mexico for a threecountry experience. Not all monarchs are migratory. There are non-migratory populations in Hawaii, South Pacific islands, New Zealand, Australia, Spain, and Portugal. Only the populations that summer in the U.S. and Canada complete the famous monarch migration. This makes it even more worrying that monarch populations in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico have experienced drastic declines since the 1990s. Loss of milkweeds, nectar plants, and the Oyamel fir forests led to an over 80--percent decline in migratory monarchs. The good news is that 2019 counts of their wintering grounds in Mexico showed an increase of 144 percent compared to 2018, making it the largest population documented since 2007, according to the Monarch Joint Venture. One year is not a trend, however, for monarchs to make a full recovery, millions of milkweeds and nectar plants need to be added back to our landscape. Golf-Cart Rodeo Makes a Splash Special to Welcome Home RGV

s the snowbird season in the RGV begins to wind down, there is still some fun to be had. Chimney Park RV Resort held its annual International Golf Cart Rodeo March 4, with 19 teams from various states and provinces competing. The winner is determined by the fastest time and fewest penalties. The blindfolded drivers were guided by a partner through a serpentine course of markers (red milk jugs full of water) and one large refuse can. A penalty of 20 seconds was applied for hitting a jug and spilling the water, going off course, or hitting an object (or spectator). “Sheriffs” walked the sidelines judging infractions. Some were very adept at following either verbal or shoulder-touch directions, while some partners pointed in vain. The hardest direction was to go straight, especially at the finish line. The fastest time was under two minutes, and the slowest was over five minutes. At the end of the event, announcer Mike Syrstad and Rodeo Chairman Don West presented the coveted “Travelling Hubcap” award to Bud Alderson from Missouri and John Erb, from Ontario. Second place went to Steve and Peggy van der Linden from New York, and

third went to Janet Hogue from Iowa and Sandy Morrison from Missouri. The “Booby Prize” for slowest time went to Mac and Donna Woodard from Missouri. Chairman West thanked the many volunteers who helped with the event. A hot-dog supper followed the race. •

There are many hints about how to keep an avocado dip from turning brown, but the one I heard recently is to blanch the avocado (whole and unpeeled) in boiling water for 10 seconds. I haven’t tried it, but it doesn’t seem it would hurt anything, as long as it wasn’t left in the water longer than indicated; we don’t want it to cook. After it cools, use it as you would in any recipe. •

Combine all of the ingredients, mixing well. Break up any large pieces of tuna or avocado so the mixture is well blended. Cover with plastic wrap, having it touch the surface of the spread, and refrigerate to chill well. Serve with sturdy crackers, unflavored pita chips. and/or plain bagel chips.

• 2 large, ripe avocados, pitted, peeled and slightly mashed • 1 can (6.5 oz.) white tuna in oil, drained • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • ½ teaspoon garlic salt • 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish • Dash of bottled hot pepper sauce, such as Franks®

• Cracked ice • 1 quart Chablis • 1 cup sparkling mineral water • 2 ounces orange liqueur

Cut a slice from the ends of the fruits to make them stand flat. Reserve fruit and place the end slices in a small saucepan with the water and sugar. Bring to a boil over medium high heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Lower heat and simmer for 3 minutes to make a simple syrup. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. Strain the syrup, squeezing juices from the fruit. Discard the fruit end slices. Chill the syrup. (May be kept up to one week.) On the day of serving, use a 2mm (thin) slicing disc to process the lemon and limes. Use a 3 or 4 mm slice disc to process the oranges. Discard seeds; chill the slices, covered, until ready to use. To serve the sangria, pour the syrup into a bowl or large pitcher filled with cracked ice. Add the reserved fruit slices and stir in the wine, mineral water, and liqueur. Weekend Pancakes

his basic pancake is made from a simple batter of eggs, flour, milk and baking powder for leavening. Feel free to experiment with different types of flour such as whole wheat or buckwheat. And you can also add fruit to the mixture, such as blueberries, or even mini chocolate chips. The batter can be made from scratch in about the same time it takes to toast a bagel. The most time-consuming part of making pancakes, of course, is cooking them, which isn’t that long anyway and definitely worth the effort. Alternatively, you could enjoy our yummy pancakes with a delicious mimosa at our fabulous brunch served daily 10:00-4:00. at Marcello’s Ocean Grille & Spirits. Bon Appétit! • • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons baking powder • ¼ teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon sugar, optional

Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium-low heat. In a bowl, mix together dry ingredients. Beat eggs into 1 1/2 cups milk, then stir in 2 tablespoons melted cooled butter. Gently stir wet mixture into dry ingredients, mixing only enough to moisten flour; don't worry about a few lumps. If your batter seems thick, add a little more milk. Place 2 teaspoons butter on griddle or non-stick skillet. When butter foam subsides, ladle batter onto griddle or skillet, making pancakes of any size you prefer. Adjust heat as necessary. Typically, the first batch will require higher heat than subsequent batches and the first batch is almost never as good as the pancakes to follow. No one knows why. Flip pancakes after bubbles rise to surface and bottoms brown, ~ after 2 to 4 minutes.

Cook until second side is lightly browned. Serve, or hold on an ovenproof plate in a 200-degree oven for up to 15 minutes.
