If you know me,

you know orange is my favorite color. If you know me well, you know I have a love for the monarch butterfly! So it’s no surprise that we selected the monarchbutterfly sanctuary as one must-do on our recent trip to Mexico City.

Monarchs are much like our Winter Texans, migrating south each winter from the northern parts of the U.S. and Canada, starting their trek around October. We see the monarchs in South Texas as they make their way to and from Mexico, where they spend their winter months. But did you know our monarch population has deceased by more than half? There are two simple things you can do before you leave--plant milkweed, the monarch's primary source of food, and encourage your parks to build butterfly gardens.

How do you do that? Well, the National Butterfly Center in Mission not only has an amazing facility for all species of butterflies, but they also have a plant nursery, where you can purchase milkweed plants. The monies raised at the nursery go right back into the Center. The milkweed is pretty, it doesn’t require a lot of water, and it will bring the butterflies to your park for a visit next winter! • We’re just connecting the dots,

The first full day, travelers ventured beyond the city to experience the winter destination for millions of monarch butterflies, traveling to Piedra Herrada Monarch Sanctuary. Lone monarchs were spotted from the bus, upon arrival. More and more were spotted, as the majority of the group hiked steep inclines and sometimes narrow pathways. One couple opted to to ride horseback during the longest part of the journey. The consensus? It was worth the trip. Thousand and thousands of monarchs clung together in giant clumps, weighing down the branches of tall pine trees, while thousands more fluttered through the air. The group spent the rest of the day enjoying a meal while looking over the square in Valle de Bravo and then exploring quaint Puebla. At the end of the day’s adventures, one traveler shared, “It exceeded my expectations.” Additional stops on the agenda included the National Museum of Anthropology, the Teotihuacan pyramids, the Basilica of our Lady of Guadalupe, and the historic Downtown Mexico City, plus a performance of folkloric ballet. La Floresta Golf Tournament Tops $50,000 for Cancer Society over 25 Years Special to Welcome Home RGV

ancer. It touches most of us personally. Each member of the La Floresta family knows someone who is currently fighting cancer or who has lost the battle. Residents of La Floresta will continue to fight until a cure is found. The 25th Annual American Cancer Society Golf Tournament was held Saturday, February 15, at La Floresta Park in Mercedes. We had 67 golf enthusiasts--from beginners to those with advanced skill--participate at the Park’s par 3, 9-hole golf course. The winners were Team #6, which consisted of Polly Webb, Frisco, Texas; Rodger Vanderville, Manistique, Michigan: Gerry Mason, Manitoba, Canada; Irene Gill, Jerseyville, Illinois; Dan MacKay, Manitoba; Arleen Bier, Janesville, Wisconsin; Jim Keathley, Gainsville, Missouri; and Charlotte Summerly, Manitoba. This year, La Floresta residents brought in $2,394 through golf fees and other miscellaneous donations.

In the past 25 years, the La Floresta family has donated $50,724 to the American Cancer Society. Bob Fuller of St. Louis, Missouri, organized the original golf tournament in 1996 and has been directing the tournament ever since. •

Bandits by the Border to Highlight Effects of Mexican Revolution in South Texas Special to Welcome Home RGV

rom 1910 to 1921, the Mexican Revolution proved to be a period of explosive revolutionary violence across Mexico, even impacting the Rio Grande Valley. Gabriel Ozuna will present on this history during the Winter Texan Wednesday program, Bandits by the Border: The Rio Grande Valley during the Mexican Revolution, March 4 at 3 p.m. The presentation will provide context on the social tension created by Los Sediciosos, a small band of revolutionaries sponsored by the Mexican government. The group tried to spark a race war and provoked retaliatory violence between Angloand Mexican-Americans in the Rio Grande Valley. Ozuna, a graduate of Yale University, wrote a thesis on the Mexican Revolution’s cultural and social impacts on the Rio Grande Valley. Since returning to the Valley in 2018, he has been an active member

of the local history scene. He hopes to continue pursuing opportunities in history, education, and heritage tourism in the Rio Grande Valley. Arbor Day Celebration Set for March 7 It’s all about the trees Special to Welcome Home RGV

eep McAllen Beautiful will be celebrating the ninth anniversary of its Arbor Day Celebration at McAllen Municipal Park Saturday, March 7, from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. Get active, celebrate trees, and enjoy the beautiful RGV spring weather. The Arbor Day Celebration is a fun-filled day, where anyone can participate in a timed 5K or 10K run, a 25- or 62.5-mile bike tour, or, let’s not forget the Kid’s 1-Mile Run! All events commence at McAllen Municipal Park. All running events will be closed off to traffic, and bike tours will feature SAG (Support and Gear: The vehicle that follows slowly behind the last cyclist, with its lights flashing) and law-enforcement support. This is an event that is geared toward the entire family. This Arbor Day, you can come out and make a difference by helping establish a dedicated tree-planting fund for McAllen by participating in any of the events. Most importantly, it is an opportunity to come and learn from an urban forester about planting and maintaining trees through one of the workshops that will be offered on site that day. Alamo Resort Celebrates Pickleball-Court Grand Opening with Open Tournament by Rocio Villalobos

esidents of Alamo’s Casa del Valle celebrated the official opening of their eight new pickleball courts by inviting players from other parks to compete in a round-robin tournament with the chance to take home gold, silver, and bronze medals. Park Manager Elisha Lee said they advertised the tournament for weeks and were able to accept 32 players, with most coming from outside of the Park, while many Casa del Valle residents and pickleball regulars volunteered to keep score and ensure the smooth flow of rounds. Although they just recently celebrated the opening, the courts have been in use since the summer when they were converted from tennis courts due to high demand from residents. When the game was introduced to the Park around 2015,

Lee said there were four, maybe five, players. “Now we have 40 players,” said Lee, adding she believes the sport has become so popular because it’s less intense than other sports. “A lot of the younger retirees are still very athletic and try to stay in good shape. This is an active physical sport for those that like tennis, but maybe tennis is just a little too strenuous.” A few of the differences between the sports: in pickleball, only underhand serving is allowed, the court dimensions are smaller, the net is lower, and the balls are plastic and lighter in weight. Sherry Leitner, a Park resident visiting from Wisconsin, started playing pickleball three years ago with her husband as a means of getting some exercise. Since discovering it, the pair has not stopped and now compete in tournaments all around the Valley. “We play every day, twice a day,” said Leitner, who has a pickleball charm on her Casa-del-Valle name badge. “The way racket sports are moving, tennis is sort of dying off, and pickleball is definitely coming into fashion.” Leitner volunteered for the two-hour tournament, updating the whiteboard as players switched opponents and directing them to their court. The games were divided into two groups--recreational and competitive--so everyone could enjoy the game against someone of similar skillsets. previous injury was flaring up, but she hopes to play again soon at one of the upcoming open plays. On Thursdays, the Park hosts $1 open play; anybody is welcome to attend and play pickleball on its courts. According to Lee, as many as 60 players attend each week. “I used to play tennis. Now I play pickleball and absolutely love the game,” said Demerit, adding she is grateful to the Park for sharing its facilities. “It has just been such a pleasure, and we really do appreciate

it." During the warmer months, Demerit lives in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where the sport is widely popular and fastgrowing. At the club where she plays at home, there are as many as 200 players, and the matches do become competitive. “You raise to the level of what you want your game to look like,” she said. “If you want to be competitive, you will be, and that’s what I do. “It’s a passion for us, and we look forward to it every time we play.” •

There are wonderful shopping finds and terrific people to be found up and down the streets. And Uncommon Grounds, the neighborhood café, always has something yummy for lunch! This year, The Lamb’s Loom and all our craft people have joined in the fun, and we would love to have you come check things out! Our peeps specialize in handmade items. You’ll find leather work, crochet and knit shawls and dolls, soaps and scrubbies, bags and totes…and the list goes on! As a nonprofit, all-volunteer, prayershawl ministry, we count on you to keep us going. The proceeds from the yarn shop and our consignment peeps all go to cover the overhead around here. All year long, we collect handmade items and then ship them to underserved people all over the world. Everyone is welcome to join us in the journey of spreading a little joy around our world. resident and CEO of the Gorgas Science Foundation, Lawrence “Larry” Lof, will share his expertise and knowledge of the ever-changing Rio Grande River at Quinta Mazatlán’s Nights at the Mansion Speaker Series. Join Lof Thursday, February 27, at 6:00 p.m. as he presents The Rio Grande: Reflections on a Disappearing River. The Rio Grande River and the ecosystems along its banks have changed dramatically in the last 150 years. Until the middle of the 19th century, the Rio Grande was a mighty river. It was often called North America’s second Mississippi. Looking at the Rio Grande River today, it is hard to visualize the fleet of steamboats that once fought the strong current far up river or the miles of dense palm forest that dominated the lower course of river delta. By 1902, the last riverboat ceased to operate. The Sabal-Palm forests that covered the richest alluvial delta soils fell prey to the agricultural boom of the late 19th and 20th century. By the mid-20th century, only a few isolated patches survived--one on San Tomas (Rabb) Plantation, now known as Sabal Palm Sanctuary, a sheltered 29-acre tract of old-growth forest surviving adjacent to the Historic Rabb Plantation House. The Audubon Society preserved and formed a core to begin reforestation

Speaker Series efforts; the Gorgas Science Foundation now manages this legacy. Lof was awarded professor emeritus status at UTRGV in 2013 for his efforts in starting the El Cielo Biosphere Reserve, a 145,000-hectare conservation zone preserving one of the most biodiverse areas of the Western Hemisphere and the northernmost tropical cloud forest in the Americas. He has also helped restore historic structures, one being the iconic 1937 Neutra House, a rare, local relic that was once listed as one of the 10 most endangered historic structures in the U.S. Lof continues to lead efforts to restore buildings in historic Brownsville. Nights at the Mansion Speaker Series features noteworthy speakers and scholars presenting lectures related to our global environment, local cuisine, and the arts and culture. The program takes place Thursday evenings through May. The program fee is $3 per person. Advance reservations are not required. he Edinburg Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), along with the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce (ECOC), would like to thank the hundreds of Winter Texans who joined them at the annual Winter Texan Appreciation Day Thursday, February 13, at the Edinburg Activity Center, 123 Palm Drive. Over 250 Winter Texans, staying in the Rio Grande Valley in various RV parks, attended this event. The winter visitors enjoyed the afternoon playing casino games in hopes of winning one of many door prizes. There was also food, live music, and border buttermilk. aius is mentioned five times in the New Testament. He grew into a mighty man of faith under the ministry of the Apostle Paul. In Macedonia, Paul converted many from idolatry to Christianity (Acts 16:6-40). His ministry “turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6). Paul baptized Gaius there (1 Corinthians 1:14). Gaius kept a home in Derbe (Acts 20:4), and joined Paul's mission team (Acts 19:29). They caused an uproar in Ephesus among the silversmiths who made idols. Demetrius called a meeting of the guild. His speech stirred the crowd into a riot. The entire city was in a state of confusion. Gaius and Aristarchus were seized and held in the Great Theater. Paul wanted to rescue them, but the disciples and certain officials persuaded him to let them handle it. The town clerk was finally able to defuse and disperse the crowd. When the prisoners, including Gaius, were released, Paul embraced them, thankful that all were safe. They encouraged the church at Ephesus; then the mission team moved on (Acts 19:21-20:2). (Demetrius was converted, 3 John 12). Everywhere the mission team went, it was riot and revival, as idolatry was cast down and replaced with the worship of the One True and Living God. Gaius was a faithful and trusted member of Paul's mission team, enduring hardship and persecution with the Apostle. He grew in grace and became skillful in the Word. Gaius helped establish the church at Corinth. Paul wrote the letter to the Romans while staying with him there

Curt Benson, Cliff Benson, Charlie Bauder, and Russ Belyea are heading out in search of ‘the big one.’ “Boca Chica Beach is a great place to fish,” proclaims Charlie. “There’s also an abundance of wildlife to be found there, namely birds, turtles, dolphins, deer, and boar. I love every moment out there. That’s what keeps me here.”

everal mornings a week, Palm Resaca Park’s Cliff Benson is on the internet making use of three websites to help him decide when and where to fish. Those sites are the CameronCounty website, the South Padre Island Surf Cam, and the Tide-Times-and-TideChart website. Information gathered here will show him such things as weather forecasts and conditions about tide, beach, water, and weed accumulations. Bob Wilson usually leaves his unit before 7 a.m. “Looking forward to a day’s fishing keeps me young and invigorated,” he said with a big smile. One time their gang caught over a hundred fish at Boca Chica Beach. “We were absolutely over-the-moon ecstatic,” he said with an even bigger smile. “Besides bonding with my buds, I also enjoy watching the boats come in and out of the channel, and I keep hoping to catch ‘the big one.’” Bob has hooked a few larger fish but has never landed one. “I need to pull in one of these so I’ll have my own Fish Tale to tell!” he said. “We used to catch so many fish that we didn’t want anybody to find out about it,” said Cliff. If someone discovered our lucky spot, we would come back the next day and find several people there.” He enjoys going down to Dolphin Bay (the channel just west of the jetties) and watching the dolphins. “As a dry-lander, it is quite an amazing sight!” Ontario’s Russ Belyea has fished the Gulf waters for 20 years. He is an expert fisherman and never comes back empty handed. He has caught some trophy-size fish. “It’s a very relaxing time for me, and I enjoy talking to and advising other fishermen on the beach when they ask me for help.” With the patience of Job, Russ tried to teach me how to cast with the long surf rod by practicing in his yard. After hours of frustration, I finally cast the line out fairly straight, only to snag a passing bicyclist. When one cast went over his neighbor’s unit and banged on

the front door, that was enough! Later, while surf fishing, my mouth gaped several times as my bait flew miles out into the ocean. Finally, I caught on and spent many hours enjoying fishing afterwards. Thanks, Russ! Russ has also been fishing on South Padre Island. He goes in at gate 5 and heads north to areas 7, 11, and 17. “I don’t mind sharing this with other fishermen because it’s one thing to know where to fish, but it’s another thing to know how to catch them. I have been having good luck here,” he explained. “If I don’t catch anything in a half hour, I move on. It’s a 100-mile round trip but well worth it because of the results I get there.” Curt Benson goes out several times a week. “It’s just a thrill to get something on your line and wonder what it is,” he said. Curt’s wife, Dottie, has gone out with him to collect shells. She has an amazing display of artwork in her unit from the different shells she has collected. Curt summed up everybody’s feelings when he said, “I just enjoy getting away from the hubbub in the Park for a few hours. I love to watch the ocean and listen to the peace and quiet.” “Don’t forget about the shells!” added Dottie. •

Alamo Rose Shows Appreciation for Veterans Story and photos by Eryn Reddell Wingert

t was a packed hall at Alamo Rose RV Resort the evening of February 12 as residents gathered for the Veterans Appreciation Dinner. The ceremony began with a video presentation describing the story behind the creation of the “Star Spangled Banner," followed by resident veterans posting the colors, including flags from each branch of the United States Armed Forces. This was the first event of its kind at Alamo Rose. Organizer and Navy veteran Diane Gatewood says it was a group effort. She especially credits her husband, Jack Gatewood, a veteran of the Marines, Air Force, and reserves, for his full support throughout the planning and preparation.

The highlight of the gathering was the presentation of quilts, handmade by the Alamo Rose Summer Quilters group. Eleven veterans received quilts. A description of each veteran’s service was read by a friend or relative before he drew a number for a designated quilt. Some of the veterans knew they were being acknowledged, while others were only made aware as their individual story was read. Air Force Veteran Bob Morrison was surprised by the acknowledgement. He received a standing ovation when his name was announced. When asked what he thought about the recognition, he said, “It felt good...made me proud of what I have done.”•

y wife and I were in the store the other day picking out a wedding card for a young couple about to tie the knot. My first thought was, “Wow! Six dollars for a card? If we all skipped the card, we could give them another $600 to start life with.” But that’s not my point. I was also thinking about that time in our own lives when we were doing the same thing. What a wild ride they

The Plague on Marital Bliss likely will have ahead of them. There will be some very good times, some very bad times, and a lot of normal times just doing life. They probably know that. But one of the things they probably never thought about is the one question that will be asked by one or both about 20,000 times over a lifetime. That is, “What’s for dinner tonight?” I have been asked that more times than I can possibly count, and most times I don’t have an answer. I’m not sure at this point that my wife really expects me to have an answer. She just wants me to know about her burden and appreciate her for actually planning it. Fortunately, she often does have an idea, but she says the question plagues her night and day.

There will be many issues encountered in any marriage of significant length. Many will be big ones, a few, gigantic. However, none will interrupt the marital bliss with the persistence of Chinese water torture like menu planning. Someone is now thinking, “Why is cooking her job?” Good question. I know some households where the fellow does most of the heavy lifting in the kitchen. I applaud them and envy them. It is just that she is so darn good at it. One thing I have learned is that we both enjoy her cooking more than mine. Why play the B team when the varsity is in the house? In my defense, I do own the grill job. Someone just needs to tell me what to put on it. I’m just sayin’. •

arlingen Concert Association is pleased to announce two fabulous shows in early March, chock full of lasting memories, nostalgic beach-party songs, and folkrock favorites of the ’60s, ’70s, and beyond. Sail On: The Ultimate Beach Boys Tribute Band brings their good vibrations and fabulous harmonies to Harlingen Municipal Auditorium Wednesday, March 4, with an all-live performance at 7:30 p.m. This accomplished group has made a splash on the music scene with a young look and authentic sound reminiscent of the original Beach Boys during the prime of their career. With over 80 shows a year, Sail On is the most-booked Beach-Boys tribute band in the world. This popular group excels at classic Beach Boys’ hits, such as “California Girls,” “Catch a Wave,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “Little Deuce Coupe,” “Sloop John B,” and “Surfin’ Safari.” They also present numerous treasures from the Beach Boys’ brilliant extended catalog. All of the tribute band’s members are professional musicians who live and work in Nashville. They have toured and worked in studios with some of the best rock and pop artists in the nation. All share an affinity for the golden age of pop music and love sharing the genius of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys with audiences across the country. An exciting folk-rock trio, Burlap to Cashmere, rolls into Harlingen soon after, with a unique sound that resurrects the storied GreenwichVillage scene of the 1960s, and captures the energy of legendary Village venues, such as Café Wha and

the Bitter End. Burlap to Cashmere’s performance will be at Harlingen Municipal Auditorium Friday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. Burlap to Cashmere draws from many influential artists, including Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, and James Taylor. The group is known for their heartfelt, introspective lyrics and remarkable musicianship, as well as

first-rate renditions of “The Boxer,” “Fire and Rain,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” and many other classics. Their first CD, released in 1998, sold nearly a half-million records, propelling the group to stardom and leading to the release of a live album and an extensive tour schedule across the U.S. and through Europe and South America. After an extended hiatus, Burlap to Cashmere reemerged in 2011 with a selftitled reunion album that was highly praised in numerous media outlets, including USA Today, New York Post, and American Songwriter Magazine. “Mature, complex, and sophisticated,” declared critic Glenn McCarty, with traces of Simon & Garfunkel, Donovan, and the Gypsy Kings but “as refreshingly original as it is heartfelt.” NPR host George D. Graham hailed it as “first-rate, both lyrically and musically.” Harlingen Concert Association has been bringing internationally acclaimed, touring artists to the Valley since the 1930s. This all-volunteer, nonprofit organization is committed to enriching the cultural life of the Rio Grande Valley through live performances. When Jonathan Hoffman joins the University’s chess club, Annika beats him, hands down, in his first game, and he falls in love with her. Annika feels accepted and understood for the first time in years, and a passionate romance develops. But sometimes, love just isn’t enough, and they go their separate ways. Ten years later, Annika works at a library in Chicago. One day, while shopping in the frozen-foods section at the grocery store, her concentration is broken by the sound of a man’s voice. “Annika?” Written by Tracey Garvis Graves and first published in 2019, The Girl He Used to Know is a story of how understanding can give us insight into another’s true character and how the traits that make us different can also be our strengths. If the pecans are not already toasted, put them into a heavy, dry skillet over medium-high heat and toast them, stirring constantly. They are done when the aroma is noticeable, 2-3 minutes. Cool and use as directed. Drain the pineapple and set aside. Mix the minced onion, bell/jalapeño pepper, salt, and ½ cup of the pecans. Add the cream cheese to this mixture and combine. Then stir in the pineapple. The mixture will be stiff so it can be shaped into a ball. Roll the ball in the remainder of the pecans and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill thoroughly. Before serving, take the cheese ball out of the refrigerator about 20 minutes early so it can be spread more easily. Serve with sturdy crackers, unseasoned bagel chips, and/or plain pita chips. Yield: 24 appetizers • 24 large mushrooms • 2 tablespoons olive oil • ¼ cup butter, melted

• 2 jalapeño chilies, finely diced (or to taste) • 1 (7½ oz.) can or jar of salsa ranchera • 1 cup grated Monterey Jack

Preheat broiler. Lightly butter a cookie sheet. Remove the stems from the mushrooms. Reserve the caps; chop the stems. Brush mushroom caps with melted butter; arrange on a baking sheet. In a skillet, sauté chopped mushroom stems in olive oil until all moisture is absorbed. Remove from heat; add jalapeños. Fill mushrooms with sautéed mixture. Top with grated cheese and a dab of salsa ranchera. Beef Stroganoff

ontinuing in our series of comfort foods… Beef Stroganoff. Were we in a series? Maybe, because last week’s recipe was meat loaf. So… Anyway, forget what you think you remember about this classic dish which was in its hay day in American kitchens during the 1950s and later in school cafeterias. Beef stroganoff makes for a fabulous dinner: a pot of tender sautéed beef in a silky gravy paired with caramelized mushrooms, tangled in a bed of buttered egg noodles. Yum! I choose not use the traditional sour cream at the end, because it can easily curdle in the heat, while heavy cream offers smoother results. Bon Appétit! • • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 ½ pounds beef tenderloin • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1 ½ teaspoons hot paprika • 1 tablespoon canola oil • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter • ½ pound button mushrooms, cleaned and quartered

• 2 shallots, thinly sliced • 12 ounces wide egg noodles • ¼ cup good quality dry white wine (such as Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc) • 1 cup heavy whipping cream • 1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce • 1 ½ teaspoons Dijon mustard • Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cut the beef against the grain into 1/2-inch slices, pound lightly, then cut those slices into 1-inchwide strips. Add the flour, paprika, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt and 1 1/2 teaspoons pepper to a large shallow bowl and toss to combine. Dredge the strips of meat in the flour mixture, shake them to remove excess flour, then transfer them to a rimmed baking sheet. Place a large sauté pan over high heat and swirl in the oil. When the oil begins to shimmer, sauté the beef slices, in two batches, until they are well browned on both sides but rare inside, 3 to 4 minutes per batch. Transfer the seared meat back to the baking sheet. Turn the heat down to medium. Add 1 tablespoon of the butter to the pan. When it has melted and started to foam, add the mushrooms, toss to coat, and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until the mushrooms have released their moisture and are a deep, dark brown, 12 to 15 minutes. About halfway into the process, add the sliced shallots and 1 tablespoon butter and stir to combine. While the mushrooms cook, add the noodles to the boiling water, and cook until just done, about 8-10 minutes. Drain the noodles, and toss with the remaining 2 tablespoons butter. Set aside. When the mushrooms and shallots are soft and caramelized, increase the heat to high and deglaze the pan with the wine, scraping at all the stuck-on bits on the pan’s surface. When the wine has reduced by about half, lower the heat slightly and slowly stir in the cream, followed by the Worcestershire and mustard, stirring. Add the meat, along with any accumulated juices, and stir to combine. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the dish is hot and the beef is medium-rare, 2 to 3 minutes. Taste, and adjust the seasonings. Serve the stroganoff over the noodles and garnish the dish with the parsley.
