I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to tackle 2020 with all I’ve got. It’s hard to believe this is our 12th season, and the break over the holidays always allows time for reflection on where we’ve been and time for ‘dreaming’ about what is possible ahead. Most people thought I was crazy when I dreamed up Welcome Home RGV so many years ago, but it has been the biggest blessing for my family and those who work day in and day out with me at Welcome Home RGV. We love what we do and are all excited about what's next! The most exciting thing we are planning for 2020 is our 2nd Annual Winter Texan Reunion Tour, coming to the Midwest this September. Last year, we were able to host six parties in four states in just under 10 days! We aren’t ready to announce our 2020 tour just yet, but be on the lookout for more details as our plans finalize. We have a whole lot more fun planned for this season, with the first event of 2020 being the Winter Texan Expo. So save the dates-January 14-15! • We’re just connecting the dots,

La Feria Converted Texan Crafts for her Community

has enjoyed helping others. As a child, she was involved in Girl Scouts; as an adult, she worked as a rural mail carrier, which she says often involved returning horses to a ranch, herding cows, and repairing fences to keep animals from escaping. Now retired and a Converted Texan from Michigan, Couturier spends hours each day at VIP-La Feria RV Park, making quilts and dolls for foster children in the area. Courtier knits and crochets the items, which she said can take from several days to over a week to finish. “I learned how to knit when I was 18,” Couturier said. “I had a fellow worker show me how to make a granny square; then I went and bought yarn and a hook and started making granny squares. Then I bought books to figure out what else I could make.” In addition to donating quilts, hats, mittens, and dolls to foster homes, Couturier and other volunteers also craft handmade items for a local adult-daycare center and people in need across La Feria. While Couturier often knits and crochets in her spare time at her residence, she also meets with a group of crafters on Fridays to work together. Their giving is not just seasonal. Couturier said while her park is a mixture

of Winter Texans and full-time residents, a collection box is kept year round in the Community Hall for donations. When it’s full, the park contacts the police and fire department to determine where the need is. “The police department and fire department interchange very well with the community. They know everyone,” Couturier said. “If there’s somebody in need and we take something over there, they know exactly who to give it to.” She added that with everybody’s participation, the community always has a surplus of items. “Last year when the orphanage first opened, we made a number of different items and did such a wonderful job that everybody in the community got involved. Now they have more than they can use,” Couturier said. “It just kinda spread throughout the park, and everyone wanted to volunteer. The toys, teddy bears, and whatnot are so appreciated by the kids.” Apart from crafting, Couturier participates in Bible study at the park and in the ladies luncheons, which takes place every month at different restaurants in the RGV. “I keep myself active and busy and do things on a regular basis,” Couturier said. “It’s just absolutely so beautiful and wonderful here.” •

to the Riverwalk, which was decorated in twinkle lights, for dinner and a riverboat tour. Monday began with a buffet breakfast at the Holiday Inn Riverwalk, energizing the group for a private, three-hour tour of the historic San Antonio missions, part of the national park system. The stops included missions Espada, San Juan, Concepcion, and San Jose, “The fireworks display--the grand finale of missions!” according to tour guide Michael of San Antonio Detours. He was not mistaken. The Mission San Jose was a spectacular end to an informative and engaging tour. The group disbanded in the afternoon, as some explored the Hotel Emma and the restaurants and shops of The Pearl, a transformed former brewery. Others hopped back on the City-Sightseeing bus and headed to the historic Market Square. The travelers reconvened at San Antonio’s world-famous Tex-Mex restaurant, Mi Tierra. The Winter- and Converted-Texan travelers returned to the Rio Grande Valley the afternoon of Tuesday, December 18. The consensus among the group was that the trip was enjoyable and fun. One of Britain’s Finest String Quartets to Perform in Harlingen Special to Welcome Home RGV

arlingen Concert Association is proud to present the Glasgowbased Maxwell Quartet at Harlingen Municipal Auditorium Thursday, January 9, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the Auditorium box office, 1204 Fair Park Boulevard in Harlingen, and online at HarlingenConcert.com. Winner of both the First Prize and Audience Prize at the Trondheim (Norway) International Chamber Music Competition in 2017, this young ensemble now is considered one of Britain’s finest string quartets. The Maxwells are known for their clever arrangements, heartfelt emotion, and strong, meaningful connections with audiences. Three of the members hail from separate corners of Scotland and one from Surrey, England. “There is a natural, infectious friendship between the four of us,” explains Colin Scobie (1st violin), which developed in their early days of sharing rooms at music schools and during youth orchestra courses. That friendship runs deep in their music making and is inextricable to their performance style. “Every day we feel lucky and excited to be delving into the string-quartet repertoire, regarded by many as some of the greatest body of artwork in human history,” Scobie says. “We feel this music deeply and are passionate about bringing these artworks to life.” Intrinsically connected to this passion is the group's love of folk music. Scobie, George Smith (2nd violin), and Duncan Strachan (cello) grew up with traditional Scottish folk music ringing in their ears. After sparking a musical friendship with Elliott Perks (viola), the foursome developed and honed their folk-music style. “We believe 'folk' music is the root, the fundament of classical music,” Scobie explains. “Our approach aims

to marry the two together in a unique, free, and meaningful way. For us, every melody is a song, every rhythm a dance.” The Maxwells also feel very fortunate to play high-quality instruments on loan from private benefactors. Perks plays a J.B Vuillaume viola from 1852 and Strachan a Francesco Ruggieri cello from circa 1660. The Italian violins Scobie and Smith have played since 2016 (a Paolo Castello, circa 1770 and a Bernardus Calcanius, circa 1740) belong to the Harrison Frank Foundation, which lends fine old Italian, French, Dutch, and English violins to young professional musicians. “We had the privilege of choosing two violins at the same time that we felt complemented each other,” Scobie explains. “We settled on this particular combination as the Castello has fascinating depth of colour, perfect for the sweet lyricism so often needed for a first violin, while the Calcanius has a strong, punchy quality, ideal for adding the richness needed for inner parts.” The quartet performs regularly across the U.K. and abroad at venues including London’s Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, St Martin-in-the-Fields, and the BBC Chamber Music Proms. Their first North American tour, in winter 2019, coincided with the release of their début CD, featuring works by Haydn and traditional Scottish folk music. The tour included a New York premiere in the prestigious Schneider Concerts Series, which is curated by a panel of luminaries from the chambermusic world. lano Grande RV Resort will host an Expo showcasing the facilities and activities at the park, along with the many service and entertainment venues available in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). The Expo will be held January 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Hynes Event Center, Llano Grande RV Resort, 2215 E. West Boulevard in Mercedes, and is open to the public. There is no charge for admission. Café Grande will be serving lunch during the Expo for a reasonable price. Visitors to the Expo will get a first-hand view of the resort, with information booths set up to showcase various park activities. Visitors will be able to see the park facilities up close through guided tours. Information about becoming a resident will also be available, and park staff will be on hand to answer questions. In addition to activities at Llano Grande, visitors will also have a chance to learn about the many entertainment and service providers located in the RGV. Some of the park activities and facilities that will be featured include

shuffleboard, quilting, the woodworking shop, the lapidary shop, the golf course, the art league, and many more activities featured in the park. Entertainment and tourism providers include dining, local entertainment venues, museums, and local cultural exhibits. Service providers, such as health and wellness, taxes and estate planning, home maintenance and cleaning vendors, and golf cart sales and service will also be available. Good Neighbors Make a Great Park

f you’ve ever moved into a new neighborhood, you know that one of your major concerns is what the neighbors are like. Well, if you are a resident of a wonderful Winter-Texan park like Palm Resaca Mobile Home Park in Brownsville, you soon feel like you have won the lottery! The residents here are extremely considerate, caring, and obliging. One morning, full-time resident Teddi Wheeler pulled a muscle while dressing and began experiencing agonizing pain. When she didn’t show up for early morning coffee, people became worried. Bob Wilson went to check on her, and when he saw the dreadful situation, he said he was going to get his vehicle and take Teddi to the hospital. Fortunately, the muscle relaxed, and Teddi was able to hobble down for coffee. One of the coffee-club members went and got a cane for her so she could move about easier. Teddi’s neighbor, Tootie, also a single lady, had her car horn go off accidently early one morning. In a few short minutes, several residents came rushing over to see if she was alright. Imagine this happening in one of our major cities. The horn would probably

blast until the battery died. Myron and Donna Schuette, Winter Texans from Wisconsin, developed a long and enjoyable relationship with park resident Mary Jane Thompson,

an elderly lady who lived on her own. “I fixed leaky faucets, straightened storm doors, replaced broken screens. In fact I basically looked after all the maintenance her unit required,” said Myron. “And I told her if she tried to pay me for it, I would stop doing it,” he laughed. The Schuettes discovered that Mary Jane lived near them in Wisconsin, so they would check on her regularly when they were back up north. Myron also made the yellow, palmtree stickers that designate our cars as residing in the Palm Resaca. “The palm trees look a lot nicer than our old yellow stickers, and I just enjoyed making them,” Myron said.

Park resident Bob Wilson picked up on this idea and bought Palm Resaca bumper stickers for every resident because he wanted to advertise our park. Bob and his wife, Velma, have spent many hours taking park residents shopping, going to doctors’ appointments, and going out to eat. “If everybody does a little bit, we all do a lot,” Bob said. “And it makes everybody happy and helps our park run smoothly.” Ontario native Donna Thibeault has been a Palm Resaca resident for 20 years. “Being a single woman is difficult,” she confided, “especially PALM RESACA MOBILE HOME PARK CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE >>

being from a foreign country. There are so many thoughtful and kind people in our park who help me look after my car and deal with problems I have with my mobile. That’s the main reason I can continue to come down here to spend the winter. I feel very fortunate.” At 93, Bob Bloedorn is an Iwo Jima vet. He still rode his bike and drove his car and came down to the Center for coffee every morning. Every Saturday morning, he volunteered at the Iwo Jima monument in Harlingen. He even made the loon napkin holders for Willie’s Restaurant in Harlingen. Bob exemplifies the American spirit. Several park residents would check on him regularly to make sure he was alright. When the time finally came for his daughter to come and take him back up north for health reasons, residents of the park lined the road and saluted him to give him an honorable farewell. It was a very moving sight, and there were many watery eyes. “It is very hard to say good-bye to someone who has been such an integral part of our park for 25 years,” said his good friend Teddi Wheeler. “He will be sorely missed by us all.” We make our friends, we make our enemies, but God makes our next-door neighbor. We are indeed fortunate to be living at Palm Resaca. •

More Fun Than You Can Shake a Needle At Special to Welcome Home RGV

hat’s us! The Lamb’s Loom is not your typical yarn shop. We’re a ministry and a mindset. We are staffed by our wonderful group of Shepherds, the volunteers who help out around the shop and make this whole endeavor possible. There are classes and workshops available and always LOTS of fun to be had in our Sit-n-Knit area. Everyone is welcome to come join in the fun. Every day is show-n-tell time here at The Lamb’s Loom, too! Seeing what others are doing or have done sparks creativity and appreciation in everyone else. It's encouraging to see the end products of our labors. Some of us love to make our newest creations but have no one to give them to. Adding them to our Donation Chest at The Lamb's Loom insures they will go to a good home. Another great thing about our shop is that we have a variety of talents, interests, abilities, and experiences coming together on this journey. Some members of our “flock” are Winter Texans from Canada to Iowa to Massachusetts. Our Shepherd volunteers come from all over the world: Cameroon, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Israel, and Texas, just to name a few! We all love The Lamb's Loom because we can share in our

love of yarn, express our creativity, make friends, and socialize, as well as minister to each other as we work together to show God's love by helping others. Despite visiting multiple times a year over the past three decades, touring alongside Winter and Converted Texans provided a welcome fresh-eyed perspective. The hop-on, city-sights bus tour, after-hours tour of the Alamo, and private, guided tour of the historic missions were all new and fun-filled experiences.

he other day on the freeway, a very aggressive driver whipped around me and pulled into my lane, way too close to my front bumper for comfort. My first impulse was to hit my horn and express my displeasure at his dangerous maneuver. Fortunately, my second impulse was that if I did so, he might shoot me. Having been thus rescued from sudden death, I had time to further ponder the situation. It occurred to me that he already--somewhere deep in his soul--knew he was an idiot. He had no need for me to inform

him of such. It is also likely that his whole family knows he is an idiot, his position in life having, therefore, already been established without my further assistance. I was content to go merrily on my way, without our lives having become more intertwined than that brief encounter. Neither of us gained anything from our interactions. One of the things I have learned in life is that even out on the highway, where we are seemingly alone with our thoughts, we are actually in a community. Our encounters are brief, but nevertheless, very significant. It occurs to me that my brief highway experience, and that of most others, could have been much more pleasant with a little effort. We have all heard the term “drive friendly.” I think, though, that we can take it one phrase further. As I exited church recently, my pastor encouraged me to be a blessing to someone today.

That can be done in very small ways. Each time someone gives me an extra 20 feet of highway gap, that driver has blessed me by exercising care for me. There are an infinite number of other ways one can be blessed by the actions of others. The message of being a blessing is as old as history. History has demonstrated that some will do it and some won’t. That won’t change. What has changed is that today we have the largest population of retired people ever. We have what no population has ever enjoyed--large amounts of time and resources. What if each of us used our share of that and made it a daily goal to be that blessing to someone? It’s a target-rich environment out there. Maybe no one will notice your effort. It doesn’t matter. The fun is in doing it. I’m just sayin’. •

The RGV Concert Band Tunes Up for 22nd Season Seeking additional members Special to Welcome Home RGV

fter playing a Christmas Concert December 8 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, the Rio Grande Valley Concert Band is tuning up for its 22nd season of concert performances. Since 1998, both Valley residents and Winter Texans have joined forces to create this seasonal band, which only performs December through March. The purpose of the RGV Band is to provide an outlet for music expression for both local residents and Winter Texans. The Band performs for the general public concert-in-the-park style music using the 55+ parks as concert hosts. Band members start arriving in the Valley by early November and during the Winter-Texan season perform biweekly concerts. The band members-approximately 62 of them--gather each Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 107 Fern in McAllen, to practice.

The band is in need of additional members in the clarinet, tuba, and percussion sections. If you are interested in joining the band, please contact Gene Goede at 956-682-9225. •

inter Texan Wednesday is a program that welcomes Winter Texans and retirees to enjoy an afternoon at the Museum of South Texas History. For Winter Texan Wednesday, the museum, located in Edinburg, features a presentation followed by a highlight tour of part of a museum exhibit. The first program, Sal del Rey, will feature guest speaker Joe Vidales Wednesday, January 8, at 3 p.m. North of Edinburg resides a large salt lake early Spanish settlers along the Rio Grande claimed for the Spanish crown. The salt lake was referred to as Sal del Rey, or “Salt of the King.” Salt, at the time, was considered a valuable resource because of its preservative qualities. Vidales, a Weslaco Museum volunteer, will discuss the origins of the salt lake and its importance to the native peoples, Spanish settlers, and the State of Texas. Following the presentation, visitors may join a highlight tour of part of the River Frontier Gallery, which includes

What Gospel Are We Sharing?

ooking back over sermons we’ve heard from so many wonderful ministers God has placed in our path, most generally there has been a common denominator: the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us plainly what we, as Christians, are to do: “And he said unto them, ‘Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.’” (Mark 16:15 KJV) What gospel is it that we are to preach? Are we professing truth, which is that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins, so if we confess our sins and ask Him into our hearts, He will forgive us and write our names in the Lamb’s book of life? Are we preaching heaven is real and hell is hot? Have we made it clear that being saved by Christ is a life-changing experience, and is it evidenced by our fruit? It seems, instead, that many are preaching a self-righteous gospel, a gospel that gives justification to sin and desensitizes us to behaviors that, quite simply, have nothing to do with Jesus Christ but instead have the fingerprints of the enemy all over it. Jesus Christ left clear orders on what we are to do: “…Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Matt 28:18-20 KJV) I heard a discussion on the radio recently about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, so I decided to do some research when I got home, and I came across these facts: The Tomb is guarded 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In fact, there has been a Sentinel on duty in front of the Tomb every minute of every day since 1937, and when the Sentinel is relieved or changed

every hour on the hour, he must convey the following: “Post and orders, remain as directed” (arlingtoncemetery. mil/Explore/Changing-of-the-Guard, December 16, 2017) This means nothing changes; it is always the same. The soldiers are expected to-- and must--perform the same task without altering it in any way, shape, or form. This is exactly what we need to do when it comes to the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Preach the Bible in its entirety; proclaim the truth and love of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. The Bible doesn’t tell us to spread a watereddown version or, even worse, just give the people a word that makes them feel good about themselves; heaven forbid we step on someone’s toes. Let the words we speak be of the Holy Spirit and not of ourselves. It is our prayer tonight we all remember our post and orders remain as directed by Jesus Christ. Let everything we do and say be for and about Him; may we remain on the straight path and enter through the narrow gate. To Christ be all the glory. Amen. •

Setbacks Not Always the Final Say Special to Welcome Home RGV

wight Brackman, founder of River of Joy Ministries, Inc., has taken a message of joy around the world through music, radio, television, and speaking engagements. For the last three Winter-Texan seasons, he has led the Gospel Camp Meeting Service at Blue Bonnet RV Resort in Mission with crowd attendance reaching near building capacity every Sunday night. "As a minister, my message reaches individuals to lift them up out of their circumstances; yet on September 14 of this year, I became the one who needed to be lifted up," Rev. Brackman said. He and his wife were returning to the Rio Grande Valley when he experienced double vision. He entered the Emergency Room in a Wichita, Kansas, hospital and was taken in for a CT scan, chest x-ray, EKG, and blood work. An aneurysm and blood clots were ruled out. The doctor said the results showed all levels were in a normal range. The ER doctor's advice was to follow up with an eye doctor the next day. After multiple tests with the eye doctor, it was determined that Rev. Brackman had experienced fourth nerve palsy

of the right eye for reasons unknown. Recovery time, according to the eye doctor, would be three to six months, but in rare circumstances, it could be permanent. Upon arriving in the RGV, unable to drive and unable to manage his stage duties without most of his sight, Rev. Brackman reluctantly resigned the Blue Bonnet service. Since early October, he has helped in an advisory role to bring in a replacement for the 2020 season. Individuals across the country were praying for his recovery since the double vision began. A change started to develop a few weeks ago when his sight began to improve. In December, Steve Castleberry, manager of the Blue Bonnet RV Resort was so thrilled and shocked when Rev. Brackman called him to say the Lord had brought healing to his eyes and prayers had been answered. With his eyesight restored, Rev. Brackman believed by January 5 he would be ready to return to the stage for a fourth season. Mark your calendars and get ready to experience the Gospel Camp Meeting Service at

This is a tasty, highly spiced appetizer you won’t find at your neighbor’s

party! Use Spanish chorizo, not Mexican. Spanish is a dried sausage sold in links; Mexican is a soft sausage with a high fat content. •

Garlic Pan-Fried Bread and Chorizo Submitted by Sandy Olson

7 oz. Spanish chorizo, casings removed 4 thick slices day-old French or Italian bread Olive oil for frying 3 large, fresh garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 tablespoons chopped, fresh, flat-leaf parsley Paprika for garnish

Cut the chorizo into ½-inch-thick slices. Cut the bread, with its crusts still on, into ½-inch cubes. Add enough oil to the bottom of a large, heavy skillet so it generously covers the bottom. Heat the oil; when it’s hot, add the garlic. Cook for 30 seconds, stirring so it doesn’t burn. Add the bread chunks to the pan. Fry, stirring constantly, until golden brown. Add the chorizo and fry for 1-2 minutes or until hot. Remove the bread and meat from the oil using a slotted spoon to allow oil to drain away. Drain well on paper toweling. Put the bread and meat into a warmed serving bowl. Add the parsley and toss together. Garnish with a sprinkle of paprika and serve warm, with picks so a piece of bread and of sausage can be speared together. Serves 6 • 1 whole chicken, cup up • Comino (cumin) • Black pepper • Olive oil • 3 tablespoons butter • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 bell pepper, sliced

• 1 medium onion • 1 (14½ oz.) can whole tomatoes • 1 bay leaf • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce • 3 tablespoons catsup • 2 teaspoons cider vinegar

Season chicken lightly with comino and pepper. Brown chicken in olive oil (enough to coat ¼-inch of frying pan) over medium heat. Remove chicken and all but 3 tablespoons of oil. Add butter; over medium heat, sauté garlic, pepper, and onion until tender. Add tomatoes, bay leaf, Worcestershire sauce, catsup, vinegar; cook 1 minute. Add chicken pieces; spoon sauce on top. the kitchen preparing dishes and baked goodies for those we love. Planning the menu of delightful treats is almost as much fun as actually making and serving them. Amid our shopping for perfect gifts, adorning our homes with lights and tinsel and crafting the annual family holiday letter, we give thought to the scrumptious hors d’oeuvres we might like to offer our inevitable and honored guests. Here are two elegant and simple options that make use of prepared pastry and will make you look fabulous. Your guests will love these and will appreciate the hours they think you spent preparing them! (It will be our secret!) Chef’s note: For the mushroom bites, you can make the filling the day before and store in the refrigerator, just be sure to bring the mixture to room temp before placing in the cups. Keep the phyllo cups in the freezer until just before you want to serve them. Bon Appétit • • 1 egg   • 1/2 cup shredded Gruyere cheese • 1 green onion, finely diced • 2 tablespoon all-purpose flour   • 6 ounces prosciutto ham, diced

• 1 tablespoon water • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese   • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder   • 1/2 pkg. of a 17.3-ounce package Puff Pastry Sheets (1 sheet), thawed

Heat the oven to 400°F. Whisk the egg and water in a small bowl to make an egg wash. Stir the cheeses, green onion and garlic powder in a medium bowl. Sprinkle flour onto your work surface. Unfold the pastry sheet on the work surface. Brush the pastry sheet with the egg mixture. Top with the cheese mixture and prosciutto. Starting at a short side, roll up like a jellyroll and cut 1/2-inch slices (about 20). Place the slices onto 2 baking sheets. Brush the slices with the egg mixture. Bake until the pastries are golden brown (12 – 15 minutes). Remove the pastries from the baking sheets and let cool on wire racks.

Napa Merlot and Mushroom Brie Bites

• 1 package mini phyllo shells (try Athens Brand, in grocery freezer section) • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1 shallot, finely diced • 2 cloves garlic, finely diced • 8 ounces mixed mushrooms of your choice, finely chopped • Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper • 1/2 cup dry red wine, Merlot or Cabernet is best • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme leaves, stems removed • 1/2 small wheel Brie cheese, cut into small ½ inch slices • Fresh flat leaf parsley, finely chopped, for garnish

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. Add shallots and garlic, and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and season with salt and pepper, to taste. When the mushrooms have released their liquid, add the wine and thyme and cook on high heat, reducing until most of the liquid has evaporated, about 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and let the mixture rest a few minutes. Divide the mushroom mixture among the phyllo shells. Top each with a piece of the Brie. Return the shells to the oven and bake until the cheese has melted, about 3 - 5 minutes. Transfer the bites to a serving platter. Garnish with parsley and serve warm.
